(01:47):
football from Charlotte, North Carolina, the Queen City. If you will,
who yes, sir, then nature boy, whoa.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I've got the stop and profile like never before.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Charlotte, North Carolina, home of the Atlantic Coast Conference Kickoff,
the ACC Kickoff coming up at the end of the month,
the SEC Media Days coming up mid month, College football
galore on the horizon eighth three, four, five, zero zero
eighty six. So over the past couple of days. By
(02:25):
the way, Mike, you've a coming up at hour number two.
Over the past few days, we've been giving a look
see at the over unders of teams across the country.
Today we will dive into three more teams here and
we'll do that in the second, third, and fourth segments
(02:48):
of our number one. We'll take a look at Louisville,
Oklahoma and Penn State. So Louisville, Oklahoma and Penn State
coming up on the program today. And also, I do
want to talk about this topic since we've got Mike,
You've a coming up, the fascinating situation in the NBA.
(03:12):
And you know, rumors, rumors are what they are, rumors
in this day and age with social media, Heck, the
wrong person with the right number of followers can certainly
begin a path that opens up crazy questions around suggestions
(03:37):
that may or may not be out there or things
that may or may not have happened. But over the
weekend college basketball report based off of report from Knicks
Fan TV. Now to give you some indication on like numbers, right, Like,
(03:58):
if Knicks Fan T had twelve followers, nobody would pay
much attention to it. But Knicks Fan TV is the
number one channel giving a voice to Knicks fans worldwide.
Knicks Fans TV has thirty nine thousand followers on Twitter.
(04:20):
That's more followers than I have, you know, by about
four thousand, So legitimate. Legitimate in the sense of their
coverage of the Knicks. Now, whether or not they hit
on every single thing they put out there, it's certainly
(04:40):
something to debate, but they have enough followers that you
wouldn't throw something out there to to just make it
up in my opinion. Now there are rumors about the
New York Knicks, the potential that Russell Westbrook is a
(05:03):
target for the Knicks. They have agreed to a trade
to bring in Jordan Clarkson, and there's a lot of
moving and shaking going on in the NBA. But one
of the storylines that hit me and I was fascinated
by it was the news that they put out that
(05:25):
South Carolina women's head basketball coach Dawn Staley was someone
that the Knicks reached out to. According to Knicks Fan TV,
the Knicks reached out the Dawn Staley about their head
coaching position. Now some fans said, this cannot be serious. Now,
(05:50):
Knicks Fans TV reported, according to the league sources, that
both Taylor Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown are headed for
a second round of interviews. Micah Nori is also still
being considered for the Knicks head coaching job, but that
the Knicks also reached out to South Carolina head coach
Dawn Staley about the job. Now some people thought, what
(06:16):
are we? One guy Casmelo tweeted, can't be serious, Don
staeor are we a clown franchise once again? And I
would go the exact opposite on that front. Now, was
it clickbait? Was it legit? I have no idea whether
(06:38):
or not Dawn Staley was reached out to by the
New York Knicks, but I gotta say, and I know
I'm not saying this because I think Don Staley being
out at South Carolina would certainly help clips of women's
basketball and probably women's basketball every whey, But I do
(07:01):
have to say that I believe based off of the
job that she's done in her personality, some of you
won't believe this. I think she could do the job.
I think that she could do the job. And I
(07:22):
recognize that managing NBA athletes is certainly different than managing
collegiate athletes, there is no mistaking that fact. But I
also feel as if if you are going to take
that kind of leap in the NBA level and you
(07:47):
are going to have a female coach, to me, it
makes sense to go after Dawn Staley for a multitude
of reasons. Most notably, maybe more than anything, I think
(08:07):
she has the personality to be able to command that
locker room. I think don Staley has the ability to
walk into that situation and dictate the terms of this
is how we're gonna play the game, this is what
we're gonna do a practice like, I truly believe that
(08:30):
she's got that moxie in her and I know there
have been other females who have been close, right, none
in a full time capacity. Becky Hammond, most notably was
a longtime assistant with the San Antonio Spurs and actually
(08:50):
served as the acting head coach one game when Greg
Popovich was ejected. Now she's currently the head coach in
the WNBA for the Las Vegas Aces. But I can't
give you a reason that Dawn Staley would not absolutely
(09:11):
be capable of coaching men's basketball at the highest level.
I think she's that good. Like you wouldn't hesitate, I
don't think many of you would hesitate if I said
Gino Ariama was going to go coach in the NBA.
Would you would you say, oh, no, Gino, He's only
(09:32):
coached females, he can't coach males. That sounds absurd. I
think conversely, it's also absurd to think that a coach
couldn't coach male or men's basketball and then go coach
women's basketball. And I do think it would take a
(09:55):
special person to be able to pull it off. Like
I'm not one hundred percent certain you could just go
grab a women's basketball coach that's never really had any
level of success, right, Like, you're not gonna go over
to white Ole High School and grab the women's basketball
(10:17):
coach over there and throw him or her. I'm not
sure if it's a male or female. You're not gonna
throw that person in the NBA and say, hey, go
win us a championship. The game is a little bit different,
for sure, from not only the collegiate women's game to
the collegiate men's game. There's definitely there are definitely some
(10:38):
differences in how the game is played and the rules
and all that. But I cannot tell you a single
reason that Dawn Staley couldn't make that type of leap.
And look, whether or not she would want to do
it is probably the bigger, the bigger part of the conversation, right, Like,
(11:05):
if you don't have the desire to go coach in
the NBA, don't take that job. But if you have,
if you felt like given your track record of success
at South Carolina, and listen, she is has been, in fairness,
(11:28):
incredibly successful, and certainly there have been a couple of
seasons where she probably feels like the game cocks left
some meat on the proverbial bone. But she's a three
time NCAA tournament champion as a head coach twenty seventeen,
(11:48):
twenty twenty two, and twenty twenty four, and she's got
experience not only playing in the WNBA but also playing
internationally with USA Basketball and coaching with USA Basketball. I
would argue at this point in her life, she's probably
(12:13):
the most well prepared female for that gig. And there
are several female coaches in the NBA I think currently.
Sonya Raymond is an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies. Lindsey
(12:34):
Harding is an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers or
maybe now with the Sacramento Kings. Brittany Donaldson is an
assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, and Jinny Bowick is
an assistant with the Indiana Pacers, who are just in
(12:57):
the NBA Finals. And there's also one other kind of
connection back to South Carolina. Now it's a while back,
but Lisa Boyer, who was an associate head coach or
is an associate head coach with the South Carolina women's
basketball team right now. She was an assistant coach with
(13:18):
the Cleveland Cavaliers previously and was the first woman to
hold a coaching position in NBA history, meaning right now
on her staff in Columbia. The associate head coach at
South Carolina was the first woman to ever get an
opportunity to coach in the NBA as a assistant with
(13:40):
the Cleveland Cavaliers twenty four years ago. So you've got
a little bit of a connection on that front. We'll
talk with Mike. You've about it now, ur number two,
all right, So turn our attention to college football. Saw
some news the PAC twelve will be welcoming Texas State
to the conference. You might say, the pack Who Yeah, Well,
(14:03):
the PAC twelve. Remember after the exodus that took place
when everybody left the league except for Oregon State and
Washington State, the PAC twelve decided to bring in some
(14:23):
other programs, most of which ironically ended in the word state,
adding Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State,
and Utah State along with Gonzaga to try to rebuild
the former power conference, which at one point, the PAC
(14:46):
twelve was certainly a power league. Back in nineteen ninety six,
the PAC twelve was Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State,
Southern cal Stanford, UCLA, Washington, and Washington State. It evolved
to a larger collection, adding Colorado into the mix, adding
(15:08):
Utah into the mix back in prior to twenty twenty three,
and then of course now a complete rebranding. PAC twelve
Commissioner Teresa Gould said in a statement, we are extremely
excited to welcome Texas State as a foundational member of
the new PAC twelve. It is a new day in
college sports at the most opportune time to launch a
(15:31):
new league that is positioned to succeed in today's landscape.
With student athletes in mind, Texas State's Border Regis voted
to authorize a five million dollar buyout to the Sun
Belt Conference early on Monday. The Bobcast will remain in
the sun Belt through the twenty twenty five to twenty
twenty six season before joining the PAC twelve in all
sports for the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven school year.
(15:55):
The PAC twelve needed to reach eight football playing schools
to meet the NCAA minimum for an FBS conference prior
to the twenty twenty six season. Texas State President Kelly
Damphouse called the move a historic moment for the university.
Joining the PAC twelve is more than an athletic move.
It's a declaration of our rising national profile, our commitment excellence,
(16:17):
and our readiness to compete and collaborate with some of
the most respected institutions in the country, and so the
PAC twelve will continue to exist in a I don't
want to say makeshift variety, but somewhat makeshift variety. The
announcement also comes on the heels of the PAC twelves
(16:38):
announcement last week that it had finalized a five year
agreement with CBS for a portion of the conference's football
and men's basketball media rights, including both sports championship games.
Additional media partners are expected to be announced in the
coming weeks. Now, what this does do and I have
(17:01):
to wonder for the standpoint of the PAC twelve now
that it's got a little more, a little more gusto
if you will, I mean, will there be a situation
down the road? And it only makes sense like I
really hate it for Cal and Stanford, I really hate
(17:24):
it for Southern cal and UCLA, et cetera, that these
schools are having to travel across the country to play
sports like tennis. And maybe what this could do is
(17:44):
with some members in the newly formed PAC twelve, maybe
some of these other schools decide, you know what, we're
gonna stay in the ACC in football, We're gonna stay
in the Big ten in football. But we'll play and
also basketball, right, the bigger sports, but we'll play baseball
(18:07):
and volleyball and some of the non revenue generating sports,
we'll play those in the Pac twelve. I don't know
that it would necessarily be unheard of to pull that off,
and I honestly believe from the health of the athletic
departments over the long haul, that's probably best for everybody,
(18:31):
including the East Coast teams, because now you're minimizing a
trip for Clemson tennis to have to go out to
cal You're taking that off of the schedule for the
Wake Forest golf team to have to go play at Stanford.
(18:52):
And maybe those finances aren't a big deal, and maybe
it doesn't. Maybe it doesn't have that kind of impact
over the long haul, but I could see where you
go from.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
All.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Right, our football, baseball, men's and women's basketball, we're gonna
stay and play in the ACC. But for other sports,
logistically it just makes sense to stay and play locally,
even if that means that we're now playing tennis against
Gonzaga or Boise State. And for those other schools that
(19:26):
are now in the Pac twelve, it might increase their
profile on some of their sports to have that opportunity.
Now they may not want to do it, and that's
all well and good as well, right Like at this
point Oregon State in Washington State might say, yeah, forget that.
Those guys folded on us, which is what put us
in this situation. But good for the Pac twelve for
finding a way to hang on quick break. When we
(19:47):
come back, We're gonna take a look at the Louisville
Cardinals and I'll give you my thoughts on their over
under numbers. On a Tuesday afternoon, Lawton Swan, Clemson's Sports
Talk on a Tuesday, Mike, you have a Amcoccentral dot
com coming up. In our number two, we've been going
through over the past week or so over under numbers
from the world of college football, taking a look at
(20:11):
some of the power for programs out there. Thankfully, I'm
getting better at saying power for Today, we dive into
the Louisville Cardinals, and Louisville presents to me a unique
argument for a couple of reasons. One, their head coach,
(20:34):
Jeff Brahm, has managed to be more than impressive to
me during his time at Louisville, not to mention the
job they did against Clemson a year ago and the
result in Death Valley. You know, we talked about Clemson
taking the occasional loss in Death Valley in recent years.
(20:58):
That was one of the more shocking results when Louisville
rolled in in twenty twenty five and it really just
took control and actually perhaps trying to think the last
time I would say this, not even against Texas in
(21:24):
the College Football Playoff. I'm really gonna have to dig
in my brain a little bit on when's the last
time I watched Clemson and felt about the team. I mean,
maybe that Duke game. Maybe I don't have to go
back too far, maybe the Duke game to open the
season a couple of years ago. But when Louisville came
(21:48):
into Death Valley and won thirty three to twenty one,
it really controlled that game. It was an eye opening
moment because Clemson felt, in a lot of respects like
the much better team, but on that day they were
completely outplayed. But Louisville's over under this season is eight
(22:09):
and a half eight and a half games, So do
you think the Cardinals can get to nine wins? That's
the big question now when we take a look at
it the open with Eastern Kentucky. You definitely would chalk
that one up as a win. That's August thirtieth on
the ACC Network at three o'clock. Then they face James Madison.
(22:33):
That game's also at home for Louisville. JMU the Bulldogs.
That's a good football team. Traditionally, they've been a really
good football team in recent years. I'll still lean in
on experience and talent, size of the program and all that,
but quite frankly, you just you never really know, and
(22:58):
James Madison has been known to pull upsets like that
in the past. But for now, I'll give the benefit
of the doubt to Louisville. Playing at home early in
the season, Bowling Green again at Louisville Week three, little
end state matchup. I think certainly Louisville wins that game
(23:20):
to go to three and zero. At Pittsburgh. I could
see that game being a rather tricky one for the Cardinals.
I'll take pitt to win that. That makes Louisville three
and one. They host Virginia October fourth, I'll take pitt
to excuse me, I'll take Louisville to win that to
move to four and one against Miami on the road,
(23:43):
I'll take the Hurricanes. That makes Louisville four and two.
They host Boston College. I would think they would win
that one. That's five and two on the road at Blacksburg.
I'll give that to the Hokies. Them five and three.
I think they'll beat Cal six and three. They host
(24:06):
Clemson on November the fourteenth. The Tigers should win. That's
six and four. They go to SMU. If you lose
that game, you're six and five. And then the Kentucky
game seven and five, and I think, you know, if
you give a you know, let's say you believe they're
(24:28):
gonna lose to SMU but beat Kentucky, or beat Kentucky
but lose to SMU, or no reverse that beat one
of those two teams. I think I said the same
thing twice, just in the reverse order. So I would
tend to say for me, looking at their schedule, I mean,
(24:48):
I think they're seven and five and could be worse.
The problem I see from Louisville standpoint is they face Clemson,
they face Miami, they face SMU. Those are three almost
certain losses. The Kentucky game is not gonna be easy.
(25:13):
I wouldn't expect, and then I think they could very
easily lose to Virginia Tech or Pittsburgh. So on, then
eight and five over under. I tend to look at
it at seven and five, and I think, if they're fortunate,
they're eight and four. So I'm under on an eight
(25:34):
and five number in my opinion for the Louisville Cardinals.
So eight and five, I wonder if that's been updated.
I wonder if that spreads any different. I'm just gonna
take a look and see if there's been any movement
in that number. Them eight and five and the over
(25:57):
being the less the least likely of the two scenarios.
So yeah, I think they're under there. I think they
are seventy five eight and fourteen at best, based off
of what I see coming up Brent Vinables and the
Oklahoma Sooners making the move to the SEC a year
(26:18):
ago heading into another key season four Venables. Right now,
from what I can tell, it looks like Oklahoma's over
under number is not great. As a matter of fact,
I think the over under number that's presented might actually
(26:44):
set the tone for whether or not Brent Vinibles gets
another season out in Norman. When we come back I'll
tell you what that over under number is and whether
or not I believe the Sooners under Brent Vnable. Who lord,
I know everybody that covers Clemson and has rooted for
(27:04):
the Tigers for a wild loves. But it is a
tough schedule, one of the toughest schedules in college football.
And the number that Vegas gives Brent Vinables right now,
I could tell you if he's on the under, he's
on the hot seat. I'll tell you what it looks
like when we return. Keep it locked. Lawton Swan with
(27:26):
you Clemson Sports Talk on a Tuesday afternoons. So before
the break, we're talking about the Oklahoma Sooners and they're
over under total obviously looking at the you know the
(27:47):
history of Brent Vinibles at Clemson, we had him the
number one, the number one higher than Daboswingy has ever made.
And when Brent Vinnables went to Oklahoma after Lincoln Riley
left Norman to go out to coach Southern Cal. You
(28:11):
know Vnables. During his tenure as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma,
things had gone pretty swimmingly up until there was a
situation where I can't remember one of the one of
Bob Stoops's brothers. Maybe it was Mark, I really can't remember,
but anyway, that was a code defensive coordinator situation. If
(28:36):
I remember, this is probably twenty years ago, eighteen years ago,
and I think that bothered Brent a little bit, but
ultimately he decided to leave and end up at Clemson.
And then of course when that job comes open, I mean,
(28:56):
he's a natural higher for it, the job he had
done at Clemson, the success that he had had at Clemson,
Like you go on and on about the reasons, it
made sense for him to return to Oklahoma after being
away for a decade. And so back in December of
(29:17):
twenty twenty one, Venables is name the head coach at Oklahoma,
replacing Lincoln Riley, and the fans, I think, we're genuinely
excited about it.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Now.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
They went six and seven in year one, and again
this is kind of the Portal era, and you had
what Caleb Williams I think, left and went with Lincoln Riley.
And that was one of the problems that I really
felt that Portal had and still has, is that a
coach can leave, and so can the players when they
(29:50):
can go with the coach and that seems to be
a problem to me. Yere one, they go six and seven,
three and six. Year two they go ten and three
seven two and finish in the top fifteen, and I'm
sure Oklahoma fans are thinking, that's it, that's what we
brought you here for. And then last season they take
(30:10):
a back step six and seven, two and six in
the SEC in their first year, and he's never won
a bowl game as the head coach, zero to three
in bowl games out of Oklahoma. But then this year
for Brent Vinnables, you know, year four, another year in
(30:32):
the Southeastern Conference. If you don't have a good record,
how much longer are you going to be the head
coach out of Oklahoma? Now, the over under currently for
the Sooners is six and a half if you project
the under right now. I don't know that Brent Vinnables
(30:59):
is at Oklahoma. If they go six and six, I
definitely don't think he's there. If they go five and seven,
I mean, they have to feel like, in my opinion,
that they don't have anywhere else to turn, that this
is the best option we have. And I hate it
(31:19):
for brand Vnables because Venables didn't do anything wrong in
leaving Clemson's program. As a matter of fact, you almost
knew that the time was coming and he had to
go somewhere. But do I see more than six and
a half wins on their schedule. Let's dive in. They
(31:39):
open with Illinois State, that should be a win. A
matchup where they host Michigan. Again. I talked about this
one a few days ago when we talked about Michigan schedule.
I think that game can really go either way. Quite frankly,
with John Mattier at quarterback, maybe this Oklahoma offense looks
(32:02):
really good in the early season and they win at
home against Michigan. But for now and again, that's one
that can go either way. I'll give that as a
victory to the Wolverines. They go to Temple, I think
that's a win. To and one, they host Auburn, I
think they should win that game to go to three
and one Kent State. That's four and one. They faced
(32:25):
Texas in Dallas. I think that's a likely loss for Oklahoma.
Four and two. They come to Colombia to face the
game Cocks. That might be a hinge game on whether
or not you get the over. Okay, so much like Michigan,
(32:47):
where I gave the Wolverines the benefit of the doubt
in that game. I'll give the Sooners the benefit of
the doubt in the South Carolina game. With the recognition
that I think Oklahoma could also beat Michigan and lose
to South Caak Carolina. So either way, if you flip
flop those games, they'd still be five and two at
that point. I think they'll lose to Old miss that
(33:08):
game's in Norman. That's five and three. I think they
can beat Tennessee. I think they can beat Tennessee, so
that would be six and three. I think they would
lose to Alabama. They should be able to beat Missouri
to get to seven and four, and then I think
(33:32):
they lose at home to LSU. Seven and five is
where I see brinvitables in the Oklahoma Sooners. Certainly there
are a couple of games on there. I think the
Tennessee games one that can flip flop. I think the
South Carolina game is one that can flip flop. I
think the Michigan game. I think those games are three
(33:54):
ones that are interchangeable and maybe depending on how they play,
if they're playing really well at the end of the season.
Maybe they could beat LSU at home in Norman. I
should say to straighten that out. That game's in Norman.
So I would take Oklahoma as a team that I
(34:15):
think can finish seven to five. But it's borderline. It's
absolutely borderline. And how they play against Michigan, South Carolina
and Tennessee probably tells the story. And if their offense
is better this year, then maybe they sneak up and
(34:38):
win a couple of other games. But for now, I
would put them at seven and five. All right, when
we come back, final segment of our number one, a
lot of good vibes coming out of Happy Valley in
the Penn State, Nidney Lions. Can they reach their mark?
We'll tell you what it looks like when we return.
Stay with us. Final segment of our number one. They
(34:59):
show the shakesasre South Plane. Don't forget about our friends.
At Alumni Hall on the corner of Campus on College
Avenue in downtown Clemson, it's Alumni Hall for all. You're
officially licensed Clemson merchandise, hats, T shirts, Tailgate, garymore go
check them out today. It's Alumni Haul or online at
alumni Haull dot com. It's Alumni Haull where Tiger fans shop.
(35:21):
So Penn State Nitney Lions heck of a season a
year ago, obviously very high, very high expectations from that
fan base as well to get back to the College
Football Playoff. Their fans are really just waiting for them
to kick in the door finally on the Big Ten Championship.
(35:42):
Ten and a half though, that's the over undertotal for
Penn State this season. And you know I mentioned that
there are fan base that's waiting to get back and
win a Big Ten championship. Their last Big Ten championship
came in twenty sixteen. James Franklin was still the head
(36:04):
coach there. That team went eleven to three. They lost
in the Rose Bowl by three points to Southern cal
But since that time has been Ohio State and Michigan
and then last year, of course, it was Oregon who
ended up winning the Big Ten Championship, topping the Ninney
(36:24):
Lions forty five thirty seven at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
But ten and a half wins is the number this
season for the Nindney Lions, and can they climb that
ladder and get back into the College Football Playoff because look,
(36:45):
if you're the over, if you're eleven, if you got
eleven wins, you're in. You are in the College Football
Playoff boocket. Penn State opens against Nevada the wolf Pack
on August thirtieth. That's a definite win for Penn State.
Then they play Florida International. Chalk that one up as
another dub to go to two and oh. They face
(37:06):
Villanova three and oh. So we complained about not having
a preseason in college football, Well, Penn State's taking the
liberty of creating one. They will be three and oh
entering their matchup against Oregon and with Drew Aller back.
You know we talk about like upper classmen quarterbacks. Aler
(37:27):
and kay Klubnick are really the two marquee upperclassmen that
are returning in the world of college football. A lot
of other schools have unknowns first year quarterbacks and more
on that guy named Manning coming up in a little
bit here on the program. But they host Oregon seven
(37:50):
thirty on NBC. That's gonna be a beautiful backdrop night game,
Happy Valley. I would imagine it'll be a wide out
and like in my brain, I say, do you trust
Penn State in this matchup against Oregon, and I don't
(38:10):
if this game is being played out in Eugene. Quite frankly,
I don't think Penn State's like this dominant road team
in hostile road environments, but at home at night, I
will lean in that Penn State finds a way to
win that game. To move to four to oh at
Ucla should be a win, five and oh versus Northwestern
(38:33):
a win six and oh at Iowa. Look, Iowa's defense
is always gonna be a problem, but their offense until
I see otherwise this year, I'm just gonna assume, even
with changes, that it's gonna be similar. So we'll move
them to seven to oh at Ohio State. Like I said,
(38:56):
if that Oregon games on the road, it's a loss
at Ohio State, it's a definite law. I think right
there they are seven and one. They should beat pen
excuse me, Indiana eight and one on the road. At
Michigan State, they should win. As I said yesterday, nine
and one versus Nebraska, I don't like the Cornhuskers at
(39:16):
all ten and one, and then at Rutgers I think
they'll win, and I think Penn State, looking at their
schedule barely favorable. You know, we talked about Notre Dame
having the most likely odds of going undefeated in the
world of college football. I think if Penn State played
(39:39):
anybody not named Ohio State, they would be in that
cat bird seat. And I think the Nitney Lions will
likely win eleven games this season. Now, if I had
to give you some trouble spots, certainly that game against
Oregon could switch it to ten and two. But of
(40:00):
than that, that is the most manageable schedule that I
think we've run into going through these Nevada, Florida International, Villanova, Oregon, UCLA,
Northwestern Iowa, Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska Ruggers, and
(40:24):
the only games on the road are at UCLA, at Iowa,
at Ohio State, at Michigan, at Michigan State, and at Ruggers.
That's an eleven and one schedule. I mean, anything worse
than eleven to one, because again, you can also take
the liberties of the flip flop with Oregon and Ohio State, right,
I mean, if you're nine and three with that schedule,
(40:50):
you should be pretty disappointed in how the season played out.
I mean, that's a don't take this the wrong way,
Tiger Nation. But that's a schedule that you know, if
Clemson had, you would have the same feeling. You go, man,
you should probably be eleven and one. And if you're
(41:11):
much worse than that, something went incredibly wrong. So yeah,
I would put Penn State. I would put Penn State
here in July at eleven and one looking at their schedule,
and ten and two's probably the bottom. If you're worse
than that, if you're nine and three, you need to
(41:33):
figure out why the coaching staff can't can't figure out
how to put together some more victories in my opinion,
just taking a quick gander at that information. All Right,
we got a break coming up. Mike Yuva will join
us an hour number two of the program. We'll talk
about the South Carolina game Cocks with Mike right here
on Clemson Sports Talking and it is the show that

(43:13):

That's Mett's Plumbing, mets Plumbing dot Com. That's the website
as well. Mike Eva joins us on a Tuesday. Mike,
what's up, big guy? How are you?
Speaker 5 (43:24):
My man?
Speaker 4 (43:25):
I'm doing good. Swanny, how are we doing?
Speaker 2 (43:27):
I'm good. Look I started this show. I meant to
get to this yesterday, but well, I was gonna say,
you kind of know how this is. I guess, but
when you do radio sometimes other topics kind of drift
into the conversation and carry you off course. But I
opened today's show talking about the tweet that came out
from a New York Knicks media outlet that said, hey,
(43:49):
perhaps they were interested in Don Staley being their next
head coach. And I didn't go at it from the
standpoint of whether or not that was accurate, whether or
not Don Staley would even take that job. I went
with it from the standpoint of whether or not I
believe Don Staley could do that job. In my stance wholeheartedly, Mike, absolutely.
(44:13):
I think of all female coaches in basketball today, outside
of maybe Becky Hammond, I think Don Staley's probably the
most equipped for that type job if she went to
do it in the NBA. What were your thoughts when
you saw it come out and do you agree with
my assessment?
Speaker 3 (44:31):
Well, let's looks let's work backwards. When I saw that,
it didn't surprise me. And the reason why I say
that is, if some of you may recall, a couple
of years back, I actually put a report out that
Don Staley had interest on the seventy six ers job
opened up, and you know, some people, especially game Cock fans,
were not too happy about that. I think Don was
(44:52):
asked about that a couple of days later, and of
course she said she was happy to I share that
because I can tell you certainty, with certainty, there was
truth to that, and the reason why there was truth
from talking to people inside of Don's camp. She wanted
to make it known that she had interests certainly that
(45:13):
it means she wanted to leave, and that was going
to help her. Obviously from a contract standpoint. What happened
a couple months later, South Carolina gives her a new
contract in this case a little bit different. South Carolina
just gave Don a new contract.
Speaker 4 (45:27):
So I don't know if.
Speaker 3 (45:28):
It's necessarily trying to, you know, put some pressure on
their the new ad Jeremiah's Nati, But I think more
than anything, it just shows like, hey, look, you know
there's a name here to a point where there's a
crossover where her name is at least being brought up
in the discussion of men's basketball teams, not college but
(45:53):
NBA teams. So I think it's always something to certainly
pay attention to, what's the motive is? Is it more
so just because okay, you know, to diversify the higher
process and look at okay, it's a female, is it
to you know, try to help Don in some shape,
way or form by elevating her status to help her
from a contract standpoint, or do they truly believe I
(46:13):
think all three. I think check off the box. Because
now to your other point, I do believe that she
would do a phenomenal job simply because when she goes
in there, Don's from Philly, all right, Don does it?
John has an edge to her, and I certainly think
if she went into any locker room, she would certainly
(46:35):
be able to gain that respect because she's not gonna
mess around. She's not going to go in there and
beat around the bush. She's going to tell you exactly
how she feels. And I think that's one of the
reasons why she would do so such a good job,
regardless if she's coaching men or women.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
Mike e'via with us here on the program. I also
mentioned the fact she's got on her staff right now
in Columbia Lisa Boyer, who was the first ever women's
coach in the NBA. She broke through I think with
the Cavaliers about twenty five years ago or so. And
not that that doesn't not that that look, man, listen,
I don't just I don't just roll out of bed
(47:10):
and do this show, Bubba. I gotta do the research.
But with with somebody like that on staff, I mean,
she's got somebody she can actually talk to as well,
Like if Don Staley and listen, I don't think you
have the track record of success that Don Staley's had
and have a whole lot of self doubt, but you
know if you did, you know, if it was something
that she really thought, can I or can I do it?
She she's got somebody right there. She can lean on
(47:32):
her associate head coach and say, hey, what do you
think you think I could do the job up there?
And you know she can get some legitimate feedback.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
Well, one thing I'm really interested in more than anything,
and I'm not trying to steal your thunder if this
was a question you were going to ask me a
little bit later. I think when we look at okay
and this happens, right, and this is and I know
Gamecock fans get upset because they're very protective of their own,
but certainly when it comes to Don Staley, they don't
want her to leave because they know what she's met
just to the athletic department as a whole, but what
(48:03):
she's meant to Columbia. But I think one thing I
would certainly pay attention to. Is some of the reports
that came out just yesterday, which is there's going to
be a WNBA team coming to Philadelphia in twenty thirty.
And I think when I see that swanty, more than anything,
that's something that grabs my attention because Donnas said in
the past. Donnas said in the past, and I'm paraphrasing here,
(48:27):
but one of the reasons why she wouldn't leave coaching
women's basketball is because she felt like it would do
a disservice to the sport. And obviously she has meant
so much to women's basketball, and if she were to,
you know, coach men's basketball, basically she's saying, you know, indirectly,
men's basketball is better.
Speaker 4 (48:48):
Right, So, and.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
Again I'm paraphrasing here, this is a different opportunity. And
you know, this is five years from now, so who
knows what could happen. I mean, we talked about how
college sports continue to change. We're talking about from an
nil standpoint. Who knows how things play out over the
next couple of years. And is there some fatigue. I'm
not saying there is right now, but with some of
(49:10):
these coaches, do they go down that path in a
sense that Nick Saban went down and was like, all right,
you know what, I don't want.
Speaker 4 (49:16):
To deal with this. So I thought that's.
Speaker 3 (49:18):
Something certainly to pay attention to, especially because of the timeline.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Mike you've again he is on Twitter at Mike underscore UVA.
You can follow him there and again keep up with
everything going on not only with the South Carolina women's
basketball team, but certainly with the South Carolina football team
as they get ready for the college football campaign. And
that's where we'll turn our attention now with you, Mike.
I mean, it's a new era. Today's officially July the first,
(49:45):
which means the revenue sharing model are underway across the country.
You and I've kind of talked about the impact of
it over the landscape, but man, now that it's officially here,
it certainly is beginning to feel more real.
Speaker 3 (50:02):
No question about it. And I think for the majority
of the power for schools, we're not going to see
it impact much this year. I feel like, as far
as from a contractual standpoint, because a lot of these
contracts and I'll use the phrase grandfathered in they got
these deals done prior to this, and you know, give
(50:24):
credit to a lot of universities and a lot of
collectives for making sure they did that, because certainly, you
know this we're going to see an increase. I mean,
think back to just a couple of years ago, and
you know, I'll use Spencer Ratler since we talked about
the game Cocks. When Spencer Ratler was making about a
million dollars, it was like, holy cow, a college football
player is making a million. And now when you look
(50:44):
at some of the money that players are generating, a
guy like Leonora Sellers, he's going to be making north
for three million this year and that was only.
Speaker 4 (50:52):
What a difference of what two years?
Speaker 3 (50:54):
So I bring that up because, yes, things are going
to continue to change. We're going to try to see
if they can put some type of guardrails in place.
But because of where we're at right now, I'm interested
to see how things continue to shift over the next
couple of years because at some point, at some point,
how to teams, how to universities, how to communities, Because
(51:18):
look at we can keep talking about how there's going
to be guardrails in place, how do things shift and
how do teams try to recruit players within that cap limit?
Speaker 4 (51:29):
Do they get creative.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
I understand that certain things are going to have to
go through compliance if an NIL opportunity outside of the
school is over six hundred dollars, but swany, I mean,
let's let's call a spade a spade here. It's still
going to be a lot of gray area, and I'm
sure there's gonna be people that take advantage of these
loose rules still, and we're certainly going to be seeing
(51:50):
it next year. But right now, yeah, it's like all right,
new day, but I don't think we're going to feel
the impact certainly until next year.
Speaker 2 (51:58):
Again. Follow them on Twitter at my underscore UVA. Yeah,
I started thinking about that same thing the other day, Mike, Like,
it's amazing to me how quickly we went from these
guys are basically just like you and I and hoping
that there's a you know, buy one, get one pizza
night available and schools putting in putting greens and bowling
(52:21):
alleys and the thing, you know, so that guys had
something to do since they weren't allowed to pay them
to now all of a sudden, I mean, they're in
a different tax bracket, some of them. I'm not gonna
say all, but some of them were now in a
different tax bracket, then probably ninety five percent of the
fans in the venue.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
And it's crazy to think, like we mentioned that, it
just doesn't feel like it's going to slow down, even
though there's gonna be guardrails in place, because look, we know,
at the end of the day, especially when it comes
to football, quarterback is always going to be camps. And
when you look at it from aspect of, okay, we're recruiting,
(53:02):
we're going.
Speaker 4 (53:03):
Up against these big schools, especially you're talking about the.
Speaker 3 (53:05):
Clemsons of the world, the South Carolina is and what
they've been able to do recruiting under Shane Beemer. They're
going up against Georgia, They're going up against the Alabamas
of the world. They're going up against the Tennessee. You're
going up against the big ten schools, which it feels
like there's a lot more money up there than some
of these schools down south. I'm not saying that for
every school, but we've certainly see how that play has
(53:27):
played out over the last couple months. How do things
continue to change. But in the sense of, okay, we're
gonna have to pay quarterbacks even more and more money,
but how are we going to spread it out?
Speaker 4 (53:42):
It's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 3 (53:43):
Does this impact the transfer portal even more? Do we
see more guys enter the portal because they're gonna look
at it and they're gonna say, Okay, well I'm not
getting money here when I'm coming out of high school,
maybe I'm gonna take my chance of entering the portal
and try to go out towhere and try to make
some more money.
Speaker 4 (53:59):
So again, it's Fanny.
Speaker 3 (54:01):
I know we say this, it feels like every every
other week here. But what we've seen over the last
couple of years, what we've discussed on your program over
the last couple of years.
Speaker 4 (54:11):
Next year, at.
Speaker 3 (54:11):
This time, we're gonna be talking about even newer things
because that's just that's where everything continues to go. It's
not going to be as simple as all right, problem solved. No,
it's just gonna get more complicated.
Speaker 2 (54:22):
I feel like, yeah, I'm with you one hundred percent.
I mean, you know, it's hard to it's hard to follow,
and one of the things I think is really hurting
college sports right now. Mike and I talked about this
on the heels of the NBA Draft and certainly. I
know gamecop fans were excited to see CMB going in
(54:43):
the lottery portion of the draft area early. But I
think that the rule that they put in back after Germaine,
O'Neil and Kobe Bryant, those guys went into the NBA
where you have to go to college for one year, Mike,
I think in this era, that's become bad for the sport.
I think it's bad for college basketball. I think it's
bad for pro basketball. And I think the NBA should
(55:05):
lift that restriction and allow players to go pro right
out of high school. And I think college should figure
out how the institute a rule similar to what existed
in baseball where you have to stay for three years,
because I think what the NBA is missing and what
college basketball right now is missing is relationships. And I
think fans would be much more inclined to tune in
(55:27):
to an NBA game or a college basketball game if
they knew the players. The problem is, Mike, at most
of these schools, you don't know the guys, regardless of
the portal. They're not around long enough to know, they
barely have a simple water on their way.
Speaker 3 (55:40):
Out, no relationships and certainly being able to promote your athletes.
And I'm not saying that everyone in the hockey universe.
I'm going to use this as an example, know every
player that's coming out. But this past week I'm at
the TV Garden, I'm covering the Bruins with their draft.
They draft a player out of Boston College seventh overall.
Pick Well, he's gonna most likely stay at Boston College
(56:04):
next year. Kind of similar in a sense, not exactly
apples to apples so, but similar in a sense of
what Major League Baseball.
Speaker 4 (56:11):
Does where you own the rights but you can still
go back to college.
Speaker 3 (56:15):
I know that's not exactly what you're saying, but you
know if you did something like that, that could probably
help as well. And honestly, swany, especially when we look
at sports like basketball with nil now, I wouldn't be
shocked to see some players do that. And I'm not
saying every player is gonna do that for one reason
or another, because some of them aren't going to want
to have to talk about guard reels. They're not gonna
(56:37):
want to have any guard reels. They want to just
go on and do their thing. But as we've seen
with some of the money that's being generated from some
of these players via NIL, some of these players would
probably stick around. This was years ago.
Speaker 4 (56:50):
PJ. Doser, he leaves South Carolina, my opinion.
Speaker 3 (56:53):
Got bad advice about entering the draft. After the final
four year goes undrafted, he's been able to you know,
are his way to be able to stick around the NBA.
But if there's NIL during that time period, does he
decide to stay back?
Speaker 4 (57:09):
You know, does he go through that process? And I
think that's the other thing too, Swanny. We've seen players that.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
Go in the draft, they get bad advice and you know,
maybe go on drafted, but maybe you're able to play.
Speaker 4 (57:19):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (57:20):
I mean when you do stuff like that, it makes
it a little bit tougher. But we've seen it with
baseball where you can still go through the draft process
and still come back. So that's probably a conversation for
another day. But I wouldn't be opposed to doing something
like that to help build some of the relationships between
the players and the fans so they have a better
(57:40):
idea of who the heck these guys are.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
Yeah, look, it would help on all levels. Like I
just can't imagine that when I look back on my
experience watching college basketball growing up, how much more I
knew about the teams and the players, and I remember
the season before when that guy hit the game winner
or whatever, and now it just doesn't exist. Most of
(58:03):
the time when I'm watching the NBA Draft, I'm like,
I don't even remember a moment from this guy's college career,
which affects me directly when I turn on the NBA
and I'm like, well, I don't remember this guy, Like
I don't remember anything he did, and so I think
they got to figure out how to recapture that magic. Mike,
you'va with us here on the program. Mike, the South
(58:24):
Carolina game football team obviously getting geared up for the season,
and you and I have talked about a lot of
storylines there, but maybe most notably one of the things
I was going through this week and sort of looking
at the over under of teams based off of projections,
and again you can find a multitude of those right
but South Carolina right now, you can find him at
(58:47):
about maybe seven and a half right on the over under.
And I really think, Mike, the majority of our game
Cock listeners today, if you were to tell me, Swanny, yeah,
the unders where it's at. They're gonna say, what what
are we talking about? This is supposed to be a
great season. What do you think you look at South
Carolina schedule? We know it's tough. We know how they
performed last year seven and a half, Mike, And this
(59:09):
is not a gambling show. This is just your opinion.
What do you think you take the over there?
Speaker 3 (59:15):
Well, I've gone through the schedule, and you know, you
go through, Okay, what could be the sailing? What could
be the floor? And I think the challenging part with
South Carolina more than anything Swannee. And maybe it's not
fear necessarily to Shane Beemer and this program, but historically, historically,
when South Carolina comes off the type of season that
they had last year and I mean being able to
(59:36):
win nine games, they typically struggle the next year. They're
trying to change history. You know, they've been around for one.
Speaker 4 (59:43):
Hundred and seventeen years. I want to give people perspective.
Speaker 3 (59:46):
They've been around for one hundred and seventeen years, right,
and there have been sixteen times when South Carolina has
won eight games.
Speaker 4 (59:52):
Of those previous fifteen.
Speaker 3 (59:54):
Times in nine years, the game Cocks ended up having
a worse record the following year.
Speaker 4 (59:59):
So what's the point.
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
Well, the point is is that historically, and again it's
not all one Shane Beemer, historically, when they do what
they achieved last year, they have typically taken a step
back outside of that spur your error when they were
winning eleven games eleven games eleven games. So I think
the challenging part this year is what can you do defensively?
Speaker 4 (01:00:20):
I think the defense is still going.
Speaker 3 (01:00:21):
To be very good despite the fact that you're losing
a multitude of players on all three levels NFL talent,
guys not even just starters, but backups as well who've
had opportunities now and they're on NFL teams hitting into
training camp. But I think what gives not just game
Cock fans, but this team as a whole, the belief
that they can not only go out there and have
a nine plus win season, but potentially be knocking on
(01:00:44):
the door of trying to make a college football playoff
run is the fact that they have Lenora Sellers, and
I think that alone is giving them just that hope,
and as we know, it's most important position in North
American sports. But he needs to have guys around them,
whether it be the wide receiver room stepping up, whether
it be the running back room, replacing guy like Rocket
(01:01:05):
Sanders in the offensive line to be able to come together.
They've had some struggles over the years. There's gonna be
some new pieces, three interior offensive linemen, new guys, including
the starting center. So if they're able and it's a
lot of ifs, if they're able to do that, though,
they believe that they can get over the hump and
avoid what has been I don't want to call it
a curse, but you know, taking that step backwards after
(01:01:26):
having success the previous season.
Speaker 2 (01:01:28):
Mike, do you have a minute to hang with us?
Speaker 4 (01:01:31):
Absolutely?
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
All right, Well, hit a quick break. We'll come back
and talk a little bit more with Mike. You've a
right after this back at it on a Tuesday afternoon
the show The shakesa Southlandlalton Swan. Mike, you've a game
Cockcentral dot Com joining us. Mike, we were talking about
the over under number South Carolina. Some people see it
at about seven and a half. What's crazy? You know
you said something there during the before the break, you
(01:01:52):
said that, you know you kind of look at like
the top, like what's the best they could do, and
what's the bottom for the South Carolina games? Man, that's
a tough place to be because a lot of programs
in fairness, yeah, Clemson is probably one of them where
you look at what's the top. Well, but they could
go undefeated, and what's the bottom. I think most people
would be disappointed if they're less than eight and four.
(01:02:13):
But with South Carolina schedule, I would imagine if you
asked some people out there nationally you said, hey, what
could the bottom be? I would imagine some people might
think the bottom could basically fall out from underneath South
Carolina this year. Unfortunately.
Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
Yeah, I mean for me personally, I think the bottom
six and six, But I wouldn't be surprised if there
are some people that would say.
Speaker 4 (01:02:34):
Five and seven.
Speaker 3 (01:02:36):
And I think that would be fair in the sense
of again talking about the bottom.
Speaker 4 (01:02:39):
I'm saying, this is gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:02:40):
Happen a game right right, But simply because of the
fact that you're going up against the same schedule you
practice played last year. You know the games are just
flipping now from a conference standpoint, you still have to
play Clempson. Who I know, game Cock fans, you've been
happy over the last couple of months because you beat them,
but now you've got to beat them at home, and
(01:03:02):
that's something that you've struggled at doing.
Speaker 4 (01:03:03):
I can't remember the last.
Speaker 3 (01:03:04):
Time they've been able to do that was before I
even started working in Colombia. So I mentioned that on
top of the fact that to begin the year, yes,
you are playing a team that you should beat in
Virginia Tech. But it's week one and you're not playing
as I've mentioned before, you're not playing TikTok Tech, you're
not playing Talami State, You're playing a Power four team.
In week one games, you don't have the luxury of
(01:03:27):
going out there and laying an egg, especially when you're
talking about playing in the SEC when you want to
try to make a run at being a college football
playoff team, and that's what so many Gamecock fans believe
can happen this year. That notion is certainly in the building.
It is not going to be easy this year by
any means, but they certainly have a lot of the
DNA to be able to have success.
Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
So again, I.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
Would say personally six and six. I think from a
sailing standpoint, i'd probably go ten to two.
Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
In the regular season, here's what's crazy for the Clemson
fans that have not seen South Carolina schedule or for
Florida State seminoles peeking over the fence and hanging out
with us, etc. I would make an argument, Mike that
when the calendar turns to October, and I don't know
every team schedule in the country, but I venture to
guess that South Carolina has the toughest closing schedule of
(01:04:15):
any team in the country. October the eleventh, they take
on LSU on the road, then they play Oklahoma and
Alabama home, they go to All Miss two, Texas, A
and M, then they have Coastal and then they host Clemson.
Look September, if you're a South Carolina fan, that's the
only time that you really have a chance to breathe
because once it's October the eleventh, after that bye week,
(01:04:38):
and you're going to baton Rouge Buddy, buckle up. That's
the toughest seven game stretch that I think anybody probably plays,
and that includes having Coastal in that mix.
Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
Yeah, and I know Gamecock fans always, you know, like
think I'm a JABBRONI when I say, hey, like, don't
overlook some of these Group five matchups, specially late in
the year. But it's the fact that you have Coastal
the week before Clemson. And I'm not saying South Carolina
is gonna overlook Coastal. They could go out there, they
could beat them by a couple of touchdowns, But would
(01:05:08):
anyone be surprised if South Carolin came out against the
Shauna Clears and they just struggled to start the game
simply because they know what's on that that next week
and based on what the record could be at that time.
South Carolina is playing some great football. I mean, how
many times have we seen that throw college football right
(01:05:28):
Alabama against some of these you know, smaller schools and
they go out there and you're looking at the score
saying like, what the heck's going on here? But why
aren't they able to generate the type of points when
they go up against some of the other SEC teams. So, yes,
I think from the timing standpoint of that game, in particular,
on top of the other matchups that you mentioned to
(01:05:49):
end the stretch man, yeah, it's not gonna be easy.
And even though from a strength to schedule standpoint in
comparison to maybe over the last couple of years. They
won't say that South carolina schedule is as tough.
Speaker 4 (01:06:01):
That's not an easy schedule.
Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
By any means, by any means.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
And so here's the other side of that coin, too, Mike,
is if South Carolina's very successful this season, it's probably
because Leonora Sellers has a great year. I saw a
NFL draft projection that had him taking taken excuse me,
as the sixteenth overall pick. And this is a guy
I think for South Carolina fans, and rightfully so you
(01:06:24):
feel like just got to Columbia, but yet he's eligible
for the NFL Draft and with a great season. Because
this is the tough part, right you feel like, we
got so much time with this guy. And again, the
portal presents people being able to leave too. I get that.
But if he has a great season, he might go
pro and then you're kind of resetting things at quarterback
(01:06:44):
for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:06:45):
And that's why South Carolina went into the portal and
they invested not just the time, but the resources in
acquiring a guy like Aaron Nolan. I can tell you that.
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
You know he's not there for free, and they understand.
Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
That they have they believe in right now. But at
the same time too. They are working towards being able
to create competition in that room. Because, okay, Iaron Nolan,
he could be the.
Speaker 4 (01:07:10):
Next big thing. He was a highly touted recruit coming
out of high.
Speaker 3 (01:07:15):
School, went to Ohio State, decided now to go to
South Carolina. Well, he's still trying to get acclimated to everything.
And it's not just the fact that everyone's still going
through the adjustment period of Mike Schule taking over as
OC because everyone's doing that, but he's getting acclimated to
his teammates. He's getting acclimated to where the heck the
bathroom is in the facility, you know, his classes, all
(01:07:35):
that kind of stuff. So I bring that up because
this is going to be a year of adjustment behind him.
Cutter Woods in state kid, very talented, made some great
throws in the spring game, but he's a freshman and
I don't expect him to play this year unless needed.
I think he's gonna end up redshirting. That's why I
expect Luke Dodie to at least start the year as.
Speaker 4 (01:07:55):
A backup quarterback. But the point being.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
Is South Carolina has got ahead of the ball by
getting a guy like air Nolan in right now, they're
in position to be able to land a very talented
quarterback for the twenty twenty sixth class, land in Duckworth,
who committed to South Carolina a couple of years back
and decommitted. With Auburn picking up a quarterback recently and
(01:08:18):
Duckworth picking South Carolina as Auburn as his final two,
it's leaning towards USC landing the talent to QB.
Speaker 4 (01:08:24):
But yeah, they're.
Speaker 3 (01:08:25):
Trying to do whatever they can to make sure that
if God forbid, Sellers goes on after this year. And
I'll say this, he's got a very very good circle
around it, from his agent, to his father, to his
family members. He's got good people around him. I'm not
ruling out the possibility of him coming back, because certainly,
in this nil error, I don't think he can ever
(01:08:48):
rule it out. But at the same time, too, if
he goes out there and has a phenomenal season and
he's getting some of the recognition that he's getting right
now in some of these mock drafts, it'll be difficult
for the young man to return to South Carelina for
another year.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
There you go, Mike Youva Gamecoccentral dot Com Mike, have
a great week. Man they go, Mike, Youvagamecoccentral dot Com
quick Break will come back with more on a Tuesday afternoon,
Lawton Swan with you Clemson Sports Talk on a Tuesday afternoon.
So I mentioned earlier that we were going to turn
our attention to the state of Texas and Arch Manning.
(01:09:27):
So yesterday we looked at the future draft picks, and
again the one we were looking at did not have
Manning being in the NFL draft. It had k club
Ning number one. It had three Tigers going with the
(01:09:48):
top six picks. I bring that up today to say this, like,
if Manning chooses to go out, I venture to guess,
given the profile of his uncles, and assuming that he
has a good enough season that he's desired in the NFL,
(01:10:11):
that there will be no hesitation or trepidation from a
team in the NFL and giving him a shot. Now,
not Tom Brady's nephew, right, but his two uncles and
even his grandfather all had success in the NFL, his
(01:10:36):
uncle's both winning two Super Bowl titles, eli probably for
most of you being the more shocking result of that
given Peyton's profile. But back to the lecture, at hand
for a second and talking about arch Manning and again
he was not listed in that draft because he expectation
(01:11:00):
is for some that he might return for another year Collegiately,
he's just a different guy, doesn't need the money for sure.
But either way, this is what Paul Finebaum had to
say about arch Manning, and it kind of blows my
(01:11:21):
mind to even hear it. Like I've been on Paul
Feinebaum's show as a guest, I don't like the way
that Steven A. Smith goes about things, and Paul Finebaum,
unfortunately has fallen prey to that same that same lane
(01:11:44):
of how you do journalism and how you create engaging
conversations or engagement maybe the better word, because the conversations
aren't engaging sometimes they're just absurd, like this statement.
Speaker 5 (01:11:57):
I think there was a reasonably good chance at arch
man will be sitting on the front row in New
York at the Heisman ceremony. That's assuming that his team
does what it's supposed to do and compete for not
only the SEC but for the national championship, and I
really believe they will. I think Steve Sarkisian, who's one
of the most amazing play callers I've ever seen made
a critical mistake late in the year. He was way
(01:12:20):
too loyal to quinn Ewers, who was banged up and
was really ineffective. Had arch Manning been instituted in the
second half of that game, like Nick Saban did a
couple of years ago with tongue of I Loe, I
think there's a reasonably good chance that Texas would have
beaten Ohio State and won the national championship. They're very
capable of doing it again this year. I believe also
(01:12:43):
that arch Manning is the best college football quarterback we
have seen since Tim Tebow entered the scene. In two
thousand and six.
Speaker 2 (01:12:50):
He said he thinks arch Manning is the best college
quarterback since Tim Tebow. I think, at least from this
show's perspective. Let me ask you a question, honest to goodness,
(01:13:12):
and I may put this out on social media, how
many of you would honestly take Tim Tebow over Deshaun
Watson or even Trevor Lawrence Tiger Nation. And that is
not even bringing into the conversation a guy like Joe
(01:13:33):
Burrow at LSU. What are we talking? What are what
are we what are we talking about?
Speaker 3 (01:13:44):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:13:44):
Now I mean this, this becomes another one of those
moments where I feel like that viral one of those
first viral YouTube videos that ever came out. No, not
Charite A Bit your Finger, but the one where the
(01:14:04):
kids in the back of the car coming on from
the dentist after having some dental surgery and he looks
at his dad and he says, is this real life?
Like the best college quarterback since Tim Tebow? Like if
Tim Tebow had played collegiately three years ago, after Trevor Lawrence,
(01:14:31):
after Deshaun Watson, after Joe Burrow, and you wanted to
say something like that, say it, and I get it.
Tim Tebow is a great college quarterback. I mean, maybe
not even a great college quarterback, but he's a great winner.
He's a great winner. But when you throw around, he's
(01:14:52):
the greatest college quarterback since Tim Tebow. And I've watched
Trevor and Deshaun, and I've watched Joe Burrow and the
numbers that he put up, what do we even why
do we even do it? Since Tim Tebow? Have you
(01:15:18):
not watched a college football game since two thousand and six?
Paul Fey and bomb, there are several quarterbacks that have
played collegiately better than Tim Tebow in my opinion. And
I let me just see something. Throw this in the
Google machine. Who are the best college quarterbacks in history?
(01:15:44):
Let's narrow it down a little bit since nineteen eighty
Let's narrow it top twenty five quarterbacks all time. Dude.
If Tim Tebow is number one on this list, this
came out in twenty twenty two. If Tim Tebow is
number one, I am gonna I'm gonna go insane. I
(01:16:04):
don't care what trophies he got. I don't care what
the Tim Tebow. You gotta be kidding me. Tommy Fraser two,
Vince Young three? No way, Tim, No, absolutely not. How
many of you would take Tim Tebow over those guys
that we just talked about Joe Burrow? Am I just crazy?
Tim Tebow? I don't get it all right? Final segment this,
(01:16:28):
I can't believe there's a list that actually has him
number one. That is wow. I mean he was good
at one hundred and forty five touchdowns, sec record. Tim
Tebow stunned. Stay with us? What have you done for
me lately?
Speaker 3 (01:16:45):
It's a fair question.
Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Speaker 3 (01:16:56):
Look you for us at Clemson.
Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
The answer to the questions what have you done for me? Late?
What have you done?
Speaker 5 (01:17:01):
Always are the same. We win.
Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
Final segment on a Tuesday afternoon. All Right. So I'm
still a bit stunned about the Tim Tebow deal. I
just like I remember him being good. But you're gonna
take him, You're you're gonna really take him over Trevor
(01:18:20):
DeShawn or Joe Burrow. I just I can't figure out
the justification for it. Like, he gets credit for being
the two time national champion, all right, but the the
O six title. They don't win the six title if
(01:18:40):
he's the starting quarterback, right, he was just kind of
the alternate. He was the other piece you brought in.
He also got a Heisman trophy, Cam Newton, I mean,
what about Cam. I'd probably take Cam over him. I mean,
(01:19:00):
I think he gets the benefit because he's got two
national titles. He's a great leader, he's tough, fault, had
some iconic moments, better than Burrough, better than Deshaun Heck.
I could even almost make an argument that Matt Lioner
(01:19:26):
at Southern cal and again Lionert kind of like Tibow
didn't do much in the NFL, but dude, Matt Lioner Man,
when he was spinning that bean whooe bubble could throw
the football. He could throw the football. You know. I
(01:19:48):
think Vince Young is another name that I would bring
up in the conversation and part of vin. I think
Vince Young's purpose being on the list goes back to
what he did against Southern Cal in that National Championship game,
Like that was the moment that really broke the camel's
(01:20:08):
back in the mind's eye. I think a lot of
people have like, yep, you got to put this guy
on the list, but overall best quarterback since Tim That
was the statement, he's the best quarterback since Tim Tebow.
So let's say that you weren't including Tim Tebow in that, right,
(01:20:31):
I don't what was the verbiage. I don't think college
football has had a quarterback like this since Tim Tebow.
Something along those lines, the best quarterback since Tim Tebow.
So that was mean even if you didn't think he's
better than Tim Tebow, Right, you're saying he's better than Cam,
(01:20:53):
better than Burrow, better than Deshaun, better than Trevor. What
BA based off what, based off of what? And maybe
I will maybe we'll sit here in a year and
I'll go, man, can you believe that I questioned that
(01:21:15):
Arch Manning was the best quarterback in college football since
Tim Tebow? He's the best quarterback since quarterbacking became a thing.
Like that's kind of what I feel like. I'm I'm
I'm a little bit, I'm a little bit miffed. Like
in a year, if you had like this great forty
(01:21:35):
five hundred yard passing, twelve hundred yard rushing, forty six
touchdowns in three interception season, then you know, maybe I'll
listen to this conversation and go, yeah, you know what
you're onto something. Look at those numbers, Dude, just obliterated
anything Trevor and Deshaun and Burrow did. But but to
(01:22:00):
say that with a straight face on July the first,
twenty twenty five, when Arch Manning's career stats are ninety
five attempts and sixty three excuse me, sixty three completions
(01:22:21):
on ninety five attempts for nine hundred and sixty nine yards,
nine touchdowns and two interceptions. The best college quarterback since
Tim Tebow? What what if he were the best college
quarterback since Tim Tebow. And I know the argument that
Paul find Bob made was that he thought Steve Sarkisian
(01:22:44):
made a mistake by not playing Arch Manning. Wouldn't the
best quarterback since Tim Tebow in college football? If he
were actually that may I dare I ask this question?
Wouldn't he have beaten out the other guy? Shouldn't you
have been the starting quarterback?
Speaker 1 (01:23:08):
That?
Speaker 2 (01:23:08):
I mean, that's that's a legit question. Paul shouldn't if
he were that good, everybody should be able to see
that he should have been the starter and not Quinn yours.
But the quarterback guru, Steve Sarkishan didn't see it. So
(01:23:32):
why should I believe that that's actually the case. The
proof is in the pudding, Arch and it's not your
fault that Paul said it put the numbers up. Change
my mind? All right, We'll be back tomorrow at four
o'clock right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred. Until then,
as always, you'll take care now and go Tigers.
