Finally, Clemson Sports Talk has come back to drive time. Hello, everybody,
long and swan back in the saddle once again. It
is the show that shakes the South Lane. Clemson Sports
Tal for you each and every afternoon you make your
way around the great state of South Carolina and beyond,
listening to us on incredible radio stations like Fox Sports
(01:06):
Radio fourteen hundred the Midlands from around the world on
the iHeart Radio application downloaded today is free. The website,
put the dot com on the dog Gunnet. That's Clemson
Sports Salt dot com. And of course, the show The
Shakes of South Am brought to you in part by
our good friends over at Mets Plumbing mets plumb dot
(01:26):
com two two six seven one eight. That's Mets Plumbing
two two six seven eight. Give them a call today,
All right? Clemson soccer last night just walloping South Carolina
four to one. Clemson has been dominant in this series
(01:47):
as of late, dominant in the series all time, but man,
last night was a clinic for to one in soccer.
For those of you that maybe don't watch the sport,
I might argue it's the equivalent of like forty two
to ten. I mean it's it is a substantial beatdown.
(02:09):
And so Clemson wins the Palmetto State rivalry on the
men's side last night, and a clinic, a clinic in
Tiger Town for sure coming up this weekend. I know
Clempson Tiger faithful hoping for a clinic when it comes
down to football against the LSU Tigers, who will be
(02:33):
come again to Death Valley to face off with Clemson.
A top ten matchup, and this game is certainly one
of the top matchups across the country without doubt. But
I think one of the things that separates it, and
you can give me your opinion on social media as
well about this, is the fact that you've got two
quarterbacks in k Klebnik and Garrett Nusmeyer, who are ingrained
(02:57):
and embedded in the systems in which they are running.
Heading into this season at noon, you're gonna see two
brand new quarterbacks really taking over those top two programs
in the country in Texas and Ohio State. When you've
got a guy like Arch Manning running things for the
Longhorns and Julian Saying running things for the Buckeyes and
(03:18):
I would venture to guess that there aren't a lot
of people in Columbus or Austin that think at some
point along the way, one of those two guys might
have the missteps that could cause the coaching staff, you know,
Ryan Day and Steve Sarkisian, to say, hey, we got
to try somebody else. This isn't working the way we thought.
You can look around the country, whether it's Notre Dame
(03:41):
at Miami, You've got a new quarterback with the Hurricanes,
but then with Notre Dame you're talking about car taking
over there. And so there are some big matchups that
everybody wants to focus on. And whether it's a game
where you have a thirteen and a half point favorite
like Alabama Florida State, Ty Simpson with the Crimson Tide.
(04:03):
Of course Tommy Castellanos comes down from Boston College to
Florida State. Unproven is what we are looking at this
game in depth. Valley delivers proven, It delivers quarterbacks who
have been in their systems and creates the confidence. You know,
on yesterday's show, we talked about the fact that there's
(04:24):
this this chance that your team isn't as good as
you think. But one thing that gives I think Clemson
fans and LSU fans comfort, and I'll say it for
our fine feathered friends hanging out with us as well,
game Cock fans. You have a quarterback that has proven
(04:45):
themselves and that to me, in this day and age,
with the portal raging the way it does, is as
significant as any storyline going into this opening weekend. Is
the fact that these guys have done it before at
this level. I think that means a lot. Let me
know what you think in the comments, especially if you're
(05:06):
listening to us on social media. So with that being said,
Kay klub Nick did meet with the media today. I
do want to get you some of his commentary, for sure,
But it feels pertinent to focus on the fact that
(05:27):
we've talked a lot about Clemson's running game here on
this program because of the storyline of Adam Randall becoming
RB one and maybe even more than Adam Randall's ability
to influence the game on the ground, which we've asked
questions of you on social media about like how many
(05:49):
yards do you think Adam Randall will get? How many
yards can he rush for? So on and so forth,
But maybe the other question is how many yards does
kde Klubnick rush for in this ballgame? Because I think
if there's an aspect of kid Clubnick's game that can
(06:14):
go a long way this weekend in influencing the final results.
As great as his ability is to throw the football,
and he's got those, as Mark Packer always said, those
frisbee catching dogs out there at wide receiver. One of
the areas where I would think Clemson should have a
decided advantage is in the quarterback rushing department because LSU's
(06:42):
littered as well at wide receiver. There is no mistaking
that fact. That is their strength. And there's a reason
that Garrett Nussmeyer passed for four thousand plus yards a
year ago, but rushing yards thirty four carries a year
ago minus thirty eight yards. It's not a part of
(07:05):
his game. He's more traditional in that sense. And so
if you presume that Clemson's defensive line is going to
be what people have projected it to be, and if
you presume that LSU's defense is as advertised as well,
(07:28):
then it would seem that there is a hefty advantage
in Clemson's favor when it comes down to the Tigers'
ability to have k club that make plays even when
something breaks down. Now this spread had bumped up to four,
(07:48):
it's pulled back again to three and a half. So
I'm assuming based off of that movement that it's more
about where the money has fallen early and the betting
books attempting to hedge, so to speak, on the results again.
(08:09):
Kickoff set for seven point thirty on Saturday. Seven point
fifty two, according to Don Munson, is when the foot
will meet ball in Memorial Stadium, and the weather conditions
on Saturday evening are supposed to be glorious. I mean,
when you talk about kicking off college football in August,
(08:29):
I mean there's a chance that you have in August
night where the temperatures are in the high eighties at
seven thirty pm. Instead, it looks like around kickoff, we're
gonna have about seventy three degrees, gonna be gorgeous, gonna
be absolutely beautiful as Clemson and LSU face off for
(08:56):
the first time in Clemson. And I think the other
question now has to become after we talked about the
situation with Alabama yesterday canceling their series with West Virginia,
another power for school because the SEC is going to
excuse me going to nine conference games. I think you
(09:20):
have to ask yourself. Is Clemson LSU in question next season?
So checking the future schedules, which is a fantastic site
for college football fans because they line up the way
things are supposed to shake out or what it's supposed
(09:44):
to look like over the next couple of years. When
you look at LSU's future schedules, at this point, I
guess it's feasible that this Clemson game doesn't come off
the slate because right now you've got just Clemson and
(10:05):
McNeice on that schedule in twenty twenty six, meaning LSU
would have the ability to add an additional game that
is a group of four matchup in which they've already
got on their schedule, like this year they played Clemson,
Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, and Western Kentucky. Looking at twenty
(10:30):
twenty nine, however, they've got a game at SMU and
a matchup against Arizona State along with Rice and McNeese.
So I would assume, based off of that, and unless
this information is incorrect, that the LSU Clemson game next
season may not be in as much peril as I
(10:54):
once presumed because perhaps they had already thought ahead and
decided to to minimize the possibility of that game falling off.
And perhaps Alabama did not have the forethought to clean
up their schedules a little bit in advance of the
(11:15):
possibility of a nine game Conference Southeastern slate. And again
this may not be right. There may have been some
other series that are missed. This site is not official.
They try to do a good job in sort of
(11:36):
laying out the guidelines for everyone, but taking a look
at it. Florida State in excuse me, Alabama in twenty
twenty eight has games against Ohio State and Oklahoma State
already on the books. In twenty twenty nine, they've gotten
Notre Dame in Oklahoma State. In twenty thirty they've got
(11:58):
Georgia Tech in Notre Dame twenty thirty one, Georgia Tech
and Boston College. So it and it looks like this
carries out. They've got Arizona in Minnesota back to back
years in twenty thirty two and twenty thirty three. So
it looks as if Alabama, unlike LSU, may be a
little more aggressive in their group of or excuse me,
(12:22):
and their power five matchups, and that means to me,
or it looks to me, one of those will fall off.
And if I'm being honest, if I'm Notre Dame and
I can drop Oklahoma State, or excuse me, if I'm
Alabama and I can drop Notre Dame or Oklahoma State,
I'm dropping the Cowboys before I drop the fighting Irish.
(12:45):
All right, let me take one. And you might say, yeah,
but you can beat Oklahoma State. Yeah, but the marquee matchup,
that's that's also a feature, right the eyeballs. The eyeballs
are also important at this juncture, and I'm assuming we'll
also be important in twenty twenty nine. Let me take
(13:07):
a look at one more team South Carolina, for our
fine feathered friends peeking over the fence and being a
part of the program today. Let me just see what
their future schedules look like, and will the game Cocks
potentially be in peril to have to make some sort
of move with a game or two in terms of
(13:31):
their slates of college football matchups over the next few years.
And again, I'm hesitant to believe that this system we're
in is just gonna it's just gonna stay where it's at.
I mean, I truly think that there's a distinct possibility
(13:52):
that things have changed so much in the next few
years that this is an insignificant thing. But season, if
you're South Carolina, you've got your nine conference games, and
you've got Miami and Clemson. Game Cock fans, let me
just tell you don't want that. You don't want that.
(14:16):
Twenty twenty seven, you've got Furman, app State, Miami, and Clemson.
Twenty twenty eight, they've got North Carolina, Wafford and Clemson.
So I think South Carolina is gonna also be making
some addendums to their schedule. And with that nine game
(14:37):
schedule that came out, it did trigger a clause in
twenty twenty six Kentucky's contract. After years of speculation about
this possibility, the SEC last Thursday announced that they will
go to nine conference games, which means that each SEC
team will play three non conference games each year.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Now.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Follow that announcement, people began to speculate about matchups that
had four non conference games on the books. Arkansas, Kentucky,
Mississippi State, Georgia was also reportedly among one, but a
recorded contract. A reported contract with Tennessee State had not
(15:21):
been officially signed. Now, Kentucky had a scheduled fourth non
conference opponent for next season, but according to the contract Kentucky,
who was set to host the kent State Golden Flashes,
there is a clause that states specifically that if the
(15:41):
SEC moved to nine conference games, the game would automatically
be rescheduled for the twenty thirty season. The home team
agrees to pay the visiting team a sum of one
point six million as a guarantee for playing said game
in twenty twenty six, payable upon completion of the contest.
Should the conference of the home team dictate that Kentucky
(16:05):
play nine conference football contest moving forward, disagreed twenty twenty
six matchup would be deferred to twenty thirty for a
sum of one point eight million dollars. So kent State
that game against Kentucky now moves to twenty thirty, and
when they play it, kent State will get a little
(16:27):
more coin from that. And so again, I don't know
how up to date all of these team schedules and
things of that nature are. I don't know what clauses
these contracts have in them that would protect Southeastern Conference
schools from this type of expansion in terms of the
(16:49):
number of games are going to play. But based off
of what we see there from Kentucky, is hard for
me to imagine that other teams out there did not
also write something along these same lines into their you know,
into their contracts, so that they have a little bit
(17:13):
of an escape clause if something like this eventually came up.
A zero three four five zero zero eighty six. That
is the text line and the phone line. Again, feel
free to be a part of the program anytime, any place,
anywhere on our website.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
I know.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
I said we'd hear some from k klubnet coming up
in just a little bit. But on the flip side
of this break, we'll hear from Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett
Riley as he met with the media yesterday. Garrett Riley,
of course, now heading into his third season as Clemson's
offensive coordinator, and seems to me just listening to him again,
(17:59):
he is from old first and foremost, he is far
from old. I mean, Garrett Riley's thirty five, but he's
a guy who feels a lot more mature than he
did when he arrived at Clemson, and I get the
(18:22):
feeling that part of his move to Tiger Town in
addition to coming and being a part of what this
program has been by comparison to what TCU has been,
even though they did make a run to the National
Championship Game when he was the offensive coordinator. I do
think that part of the reason if you're a guy,
a guy like him, and you want to make this
(18:43):
stop is because you can learn so much from Dabo
Sweeney and it feels like just listening to him that
there's a lot of his demeanor that has now come
from his time around Dabo Swingey, and I think that's
(19:05):
a positive thing. I'm not trying to say he was
ever cocky or eric in or a jerk. I'm not
saying that at all, but I think there is a
you know, reserved nature to kind of where he is
right now. Like if he was if you just said
at the beginning he was all hopped up on red
(19:25):
bull and bubble gum, Well now it's more like he's
on he's on some sort of herbs that give you energy.
It's a little a little, a little u muted maybe
the right word. Anyway, when we come back, we'll hear
some from Garrett Riley will also give you some of
Garrett Riley's comments as well in our number two of
the program. As we roll towards the weekend. Right here
(19:47):
on the show The Shakes, theare south Land Clemson Sports Talk.
You can hear us eaching every day from four until
six o'clock Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred and of course
around the world on the iHeartRadio app, Clempsones Sports Salt
Lowden sw On a Tuesday afternoon yesterday, Garrett Riley, Clemson
offensive coordinator, met with the media, and we've heard and
(20:08):
talked a lot about Adam Randall, but he was asked
about sort of the pecking order behind RB one.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
I think it's a good group that they're gonna have
plenty of opportunity. That's the fun challenge for them as
a position group, as those guys are gonna play and
and uh look to have a good rotation and ask
them what they feel like they can handle as coaches.
But that room certainly has a great, great opportunity and
challenge ahead. But I'm excited for him, I really am.
I think they'll accept the challenge and it's just gonna
(20:36):
be fun to see not only that group but everybody
just be under the lights and and truly under the
fire a little bit on Saturday Night.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
That's Garrett Riley talking about the Clemson running back situation.
He was also asked about freshman Gideon Davidson, who everybody
you know really was talking highly of, and not to
say that that's not the case, but Adam Randall taking
over at running back one certainly changes things a little bit.
But ultimately, how has the freshman running back sort of
adapted and grown through fall camp?
Speaker 4 (21:06):
Just what you would expect.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
I mean, the guy's been here for several months now,
and so just the accumulation of mentally probably what we're
asking him to do, right, just that transition from high
school to college football and specifically what that position requires
and everything it entails.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
You know, he's just gotten better and better and better.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
So you know, I've said this all along, He's a
kid that just really doesn't get faced. You know, not
that he's perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but
he's just he's the type of person that can handle,
you know, moments and what you ask him to do.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
So got a lot of confidence in him.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Sticking with the running backs, Garrett Riley was asked about
david Iziamo May and sort of his advancement thus far just.
Speaker 5 (21:48):
More mature, you know, I mean really just from a
sense of knowing what to do and just doing it
more consistently, you know. So it's kind of the same
thing for him transitioning and being a young player and
just you know, to really grow in that part of
his game. And I feel like he's definitely taking a
huge step, you know, in this last whatever it's been
since spring football, you know, I mean five six months,
(22:11):
you know, as a whole, that whole timeline. I think
he's he's improved a lot, and you know, he certainly
brings you know, some violence to the to that position group.
So that's what you love about Easy because he's he's
gonna play full speed and he's gonna he's gonna have
bad intentions. I mean, it's just kind of the style
he is. So you know, definitely excited to see more
(22:31):
of him.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Gart Rather was also asked about Adam Randall and of
course what the luxury was for them having a guy
that can catch the ball coming out of the backfield
the way Randall can and Dabosweeney talked about the route trees,
et cetera. Previously, But here's Riley's thoughts on Adam Randall
at running back.
Speaker 5 (22:48):
That makes versatile, right, I mean, he brings versatility. You know,
it could be somebody that you look for mismatches and
things of that nature that he's just hopefully gonna present.
But you know, it's just it's nice to have a
guy like that back there that understands space and has
awareness and just some of the things that you know,
a receiver's going to be a little bit more accustomed,
(23:08):
you know to that.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
So yeah, it's certainly excited about Adam Garrett.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Riley was also asked about how he feels the running
back room has improved with their pass protection.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
That's been a big, big emphasis.
Speaker 5 (23:19):
I mean, anytime you make a transition from wide receiver
to running back, that's obviously going to be one of
the first things you really got to you really got
to emphasize and work on, you know, from the mental
part of it and then to the actual execution of
a one on one block. And so you know, that's
been a big thing, not just for him, but that
whole room, right, you know, younger room altogether. That's going
(23:40):
to be a big key, you know, for our season.
And certainly in this first game.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Of course, this offseason, Clemson acquired their first nine quarterback
through the transfer portal on the offensive side of the
law and Tristan Smith at wide receiver and Garrett Riley
was asked about how Smith's sort of grown in the
offense as well.
Speaker 4 (23:58):
Same thing.
Speaker 5 (23:59):
I mean, now he's been here for a while, you know,
the offense, what we ask him to do, the fundamental
technique that we teach, all the technical parts of the game,
like all that's slowing down is becoming more and more
of muscle memory to him, you know what I mean.
I mean, I know he made some plays for us,
had a fun spring game and all that stuff, but
like he had to really grow from spring football with
those parts of his game. And so that's that's certainly
(24:21):
been a big emphasis for him and for us as
coaches to get him to that point.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
But I've seen a lot of progress with Tristan Gert.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Rowley was also asked about LSU's top flight linebacker Harold
Perkins and the impact that Perkins could have if Lympse
is not careful. Yeah, I mean game ones are always
a little bit of a mystery, right, I mean, they've
got new players on defense, and some spots and game
ones are a little bit of a mystery altogether anyways.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
But yeah, I mean, he's certainly won. You're gonna identify
where he is.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
And you know, I got a ton of respect for
the way he plays the game. He's violent. He kind
of just reeks havoc all the time. That's kind of
what he is. But you know, he's a very versatile player,
you know. But like I said, just got a ton
of respect for the way that he plays the game.
So yeah, you're gonna you're gonna need to know where
he is for sure.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
Garrett Riley was also asked to address what he felt
like were some of the more critical shortfalls for this
Clemson Tiger offense a season ago.
Speaker 6 (25:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
I mean, you're not gonna like by answer, but it
boils down to this, to just really the little things
like IDs, winning a blog, defeating a blog.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
You know, it usually ends up being kind of the
the bulk.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
Of where your issues come up when you watch your
cutups at the end of the year, when it all
boils down to it, for the most part, some of
your faults or some of your weaknesses usually ends up
being the small things and so that's just been such
a big emphasis for us overall, not just short yardage,
you know, for our team and certainly on offenses, we
got to be great at the details and as coach speak,
(25:50):
as that is, it's it's the absolute truth and that
that has to show up certainly in game once it's
a mystery kind of what both teams are a little
bit right, and so it's always gonna come back to
those fundamental things for us.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
And so that's that's.
Speaker 5 (26:05):
The key for us as as an offense and certainly
as a team.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
It just is final thing from Garrett Riley in this segment,
he was asking about Kaye Klubnick and the experience that
that kay Clubney has and how that really aids the
offense this season.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
It helps I mean, you got a guy that's just
been through it, you know, and we've got a lot
of people on our side of the ball that have
played together and have continuity and chemistry from that standpoint.
They've played a lot of snaps together, They've been through
ups and downs together, you know, and so I just
think going through those experiences, I mean, we're all gonna
we're all gonna draw from our own experiences and I
(26:43):
think we got a group that can certainly do that,
you know, and applying that into a game one like
we're about to have.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
So there you go. That's a good bit from Garrett
Riley up in Tigertown yesterday. We'll have a little bit
more from Garrett for those of you joining us in
the car if you're not there already, in our number
two of the program. Will make sure we slide in
the rest of his comments as Clemson gets geared up
for this huge matchup against LSU coming up on Saturday.
(27:13):
I know it's hump day, man, it's hard to believe
football tomorrow. A slate of games around the country on
Thursday should be a lot of fun. I know, Tiger fans, everybody,
well not just Tiger fans, but everybody. We all kind
of got a little sampling over the weekend and cannot
wait to get some more tomorrow night. Stay with us,
(27:34):
rocking and rolling along with either show that shakes to
the South, Play and again, don't forget about our friends.

It's alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop. All right, Kate Clubnick,
Clemson Tiger quarterback. As I mentioned out of the gates here,
(28:23):
I think it is significant and it's kind of been
my thing about Clemson and LSU and Penn State and
South Carolina. Have you said to me, hey, how are
we you know will give you a reason this is
a college playoff team? My statement would be, well, these
(28:49):
teams will make the college football playoff because they have
veteran leadership at quarterback. So here's Kate club Nick talking
about whether there's added excitement for him when game week
rolls around.
Speaker 6 (29:06):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 7 (29:07):
I mean, yeah, I got a random workout in February
and it's leading to something, and it's leading to this
Saturday and then the next Saturday, and like you said,
you have twelve opportunities, So you.
Speaker 6 (29:20):
Know, it's exciting.
Speaker 7 (29:21):
It's excited to go live out what you've been working for.
Speaker 6 (29:25):
So that's gonna be you know, it's excited to kind
of go do that.
Speaker 7 (29:29):
In terms of different mentality waking up this week, you know,
I think that I feel like if I woke up
any different today or Monday and a game week, then
I have the last three weeks in fall camp, or
have really the whole year. I feel like I've been
living out the last three weeks of fall camp wrong. Honestly,
my mentality is I gotta wake up and you know,
(29:50):
treat it like game week and treat it like it's
the biggest day of the year every single day. So
that's been my mentality. So I'm excited, excited you'll play
a game. I'm excited for what this team can do
and you know what we're capable of and the work
that we've been putting in. It's it's been fun and
excited to see the fruits of that labor. So yeah,
(30:10):
obviously really excited.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
You know, listening to that, it's funny, there were moments
in there I felt like it didn't even sound like
Kate Clubnick. I mean, that's that's unbelievable. Like he just
sounds so mature. It's so different from before k Club
Knit was also asked about something I talked about here
on the program yesterday or or maybe Monday, about openers
(30:37):
and now LSU has not farewell and openers either Clemson.
I love the fact somebody asked me about this game
is I love the fact that it's in Clemson and
not in LSU. But he was asking, you know what
he feels like it will take to win on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (30:53):
Just do what we do. You know, we don't have
to do too much.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
I think sometimes you go into a first game and
you feel like, yeah, I go do all this, you know,
insane crazy plays and go make all this you know,
wild stuff happen. But the end of the day, he
just got to do the routine place and do them
really well, and do them routinely, and you know, be smart,
be efficient, and just go rip it. Just go rip
(31:19):
it and just have fun, you know, and just enjoy
it and like like you said, just go live out
the work that you've been putting in. You know, what
a great opportunity we have we get to go play
to just go enjoy it and be excited for success.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Club. It was also asked about the LSU defense. Obviously
Harold Perkins not only did dabbos, we need to talk
about Perkins. You heard Garret Riley talk about Perkins. Here's
Kay Club Nick talking about that LSU defense and what
he thinks the BYU Bengals will bring to the table.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (31:53):
They're explosive, you know.
Speaker 7 (31:55):
They They've got a great veteran cores, especially in the
linebacker room, you know, with the Weeks and Perkins and
you know Weeks again, So you know, they they got
guys that have played a lot of ball, and they're smart,
they're physical. Uh, they're relentless, you know. They they're they're
hauling ass, you know, to go get the ball every
single play. And you know they love they love the
(32:17):
game and they're smart and you can you can see
it in the way that they play. They're very well coached.
You know, they they're not making a lot of middle layers. Uh,
They're they're in the right spot and then the right
places at all times. So you know, we got to
be really efficient first and second down.
Speaker 6 (32:33):
You know, stay in front of the chains.
Speaker 7 (32:36):
So yeah, they're a great defense and have a lot
of guys coming back and will definitely be a fun
challenge for us.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
That's Kay Club talked about the l s U defense.
He was also asked about his respect for Garrett nuss
Meyer uh and the fact that nus Meyer has stayed
his entire career at LSU, much like Kate at Clemson.
We've talked about that out of the gates. Here's Club
Nick's thoughts on it.
Speaker 7 (33:00):
Absolutely absolutely, especially you know, playing behind Jayden Daniels and
then you know, wait until his really fourth year to start.
Speaker 6 (33:10):
That's got a ton of respect for that.
Speaker 7 (33:13):
And you know he's a heckful player, and you know
I love, you know, watching him last year, just his
anticipation on throws, the way he leads his guys. You know,
at when we were at Manning, you know, the LSU
receivers come over and getting being able to watch them
and the way he leads them and his relationship with
them was really cool to see. And you can just
(33:33):
tell that, you know, his teammates really love him, and
but he's you know, he's a heckful player and you
know I love watching him play.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Kay Club Nick there supporting Garrett nus Meyer and the
decision to stick around in an era where players certainly
can move around. Club Nick was also asked about how
he feels like or how he feels like he's been
developed at Clemson.
Speaker 6 (33:57):
I mean, this is just, in my mind, the best
place to get better, you know.
Speaker 7 (34:00):
So I was in a scenario where I was playing
early and I knew that I needed to get better
and this was the place to do it. We had
great people around me, an incredible coaching staff, a coaching
staff that I have put together, great quarterbacks before me,
great offenses around me. So this is a place I
(34:23):
knew I needed to get better. And it's really as
simple as that.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
So we'll hear a little bit more from Kate Clubnik
and hour number two of the program here on a
Wednesday afternoon eight oh three four five h zero zero
eighty six oh and quite a treat too for you
find feather free and gamecock fans hanging out with us today.
Mike Eva from gamecoccentral dot com. A day late, not
a dollar short, though he will be here. Maybe he
is a dollar short in a day late, I'm not sure,
(34:47):
but he will be on the program with us in
our number two. That's Mike Va from Gamecock Central dot com.
All right, when we come back, Nick drops a dime
via the text line. We'll give us his thoughts or
we'll give you our thoughts on his question. After this
final segment of our one on a Wednesday, Mike Eva,
(35:08):
Gamecockcentral dot Com joins us in hour number two, looking
forward to talk with him. Of course you could text
us as well. We do have a text message, actually
a couple of text messages, but one from Nick listening
to the program over in Georgia as well. Nick wants
to know who I think, Sorry, Nick, lost your text.
(35:34):
Who scores first touchdown? Quarterback, running back or wide receiver?
Now I'm assuming you're talking about Clemson, Nick, we could
include tight ending that Olsen Pat Henry. All right, so
let's assume for a minute we'll take Nick's question. Let's
assume forer minute, Nick that the Tigers are going to
(35:57):
score through the air. I mean, I'll take wide receiver.
I think wide receiver is gonna be the first touchdown
this year for Clemson. That it'd be great, wouldn't it
be great? If you see like Adam Randall ripping off
a big twenty five yard scamper to cap a drive.
(36:17):
You know, something like that would just be amazing. But
my guess, Nick is that it's going to be that
this will be a situation where ka Klubnick leads a
drive and hits a wide receiver in the end zone.
(36:40):
So that would be my guess, all right. We also
had a couple of text about the quarterback situation that
I talked about earlier. Ironically Kate Clubnick, who we will
hear from as well in our number two. Kate Clubnick
also reference to having some really kind words for Garrett
(37:01):
Nussmeyer in his decision in this era of college sports
to stick around and continue to play at LSU when
he's behind Jaydan Daniels and could have easily transferred out.
Let's see Landon listening to us in Greenville, says Swanee.
I love seeing Cage stick it out in this transferred
(37:23):
portal world. Loyalty is rare. Club Knick's built different. He
wants to win at Clemson, not chasing the easy way
out and Landon, I I mean look like like literally
we could flip what you say there and just add
Garrett in there right talking about Nussmeyer. Love seeing Nussmeyer
(37:45):
stick it out in this transfer portal world. Let's see Brennan,
who's a LSU fan, appreciate the text. Brennan says, nus
staying was huge for LSU. Could have gone anywhere, but
he waited his turn, and it's his team. That's old
(38:07):
school college football. You're right, Brennan, that is old school
college football. So a couple of text messages there as well.
On the quarterback front, and again I said this earlier
(38:27):
about the ability of these quarterbacks to impact the game
with their legs and the job that Kai Clubnick has
done and the potential that he adds to this Clemson
offense with his ability to pull the ball down. And
I talked about nuss Meyer's numbers, but we really didn't
(38:51):
talk about kay Clubnick's numbers. And you know, Nussmeyer little
to nothing in the run game in his entire career,
and I would not expect, you know, Jayden Daniels influenced
the game with his leg right, like, that's what made
jayde Daniels a very special and impactful player for LSU
(39:14):
and the Heisman Trophy winner. But you know, cade Klubnick,
if you're talking about his ability and the numbers that
he's put up in his career on the ground. One
hundred and nineteen carries for four hundred and sixty three
yards is seven touchdowns a year ago, nearly four yards
(39:36):
of carry. Now I am no Einsteiner, but I know
four times three is twelve. That's a first down. I mean,
that's solid. It's yeah. I wonder how let me take
a look, because honestly, I don't know. I mean, Deshaun
(39:58):
Watson was a very prolific runner. Let's take a look
at the yards per carry during Watson's final year, his
junior year at Clemson, And I mean, we could go
back to whatever year you want, whether that's the We'll
(40:20):
use the national championship year as a reference here, yards
per carrie Deshaun Watson twenty sixteen three point eight. So
club Nick a little bit better than Deshaun Watson in
that department. Now, Watson in fairness at twenty fifteen season,
(40:43):
the two thousand excuse me, the four thousand and one
thousand year, five point three yards per carry. So Clemson
won the title. When to show on did had three
point eight yards per carry? But that sophomore year five
(41:05):
point three yards per carry. I wonder about Trevor Lawrence
because I really have no idea on his numbers. Because
remember Trevor Lawrence had a few big plays that game
against Ohio State where he breaks into the open field
and ends up scoring to give Clemson some life out
in the Fiesta Bowl. Let's see Trevor Lawrence college stats.
(41:30):
Throw this in year old Google machine, real quick? Did
he ever sniff that three point Where'd I say? Ky
was a three point nine in the what I said?
Rushing yards three point nine? All right, let's see what
Trevor did. I would think not like my hunch is
to say no. Let's see Trevor rushing yards twenty nineteen
(41:58):
five point five his sophomore year. Five point five yards
per care. That's wow, more than Deshaun. Now, he didn't
carry it as much, but he was more efficient when
he did. And that might be an aria K club
that needs to improve. Quite frankly, our number two, Mike
Youba joins us keep it locked.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
It's time for Clipson Sports Talk with Luwton Swan.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
It is our number two. That's drive time right around
the show The Shakes of Southla and Clempsones Sports sal
Law the Swan hang out with you on a Wednesday afternoon.
Couldn't get hooked up with Mike Eva from gamecoccentral dot
com yesterday, but we got into day for our fine
feathered friends hanging out with us South Carolina Gamecock fans.
(43:23):
Don't forget our number two of the show, brought to
you in part by our good friends over at Mets
Plumbing mets Plumbing dot com. That's the website. The phone
number two two six seven one o eight. That's two
two six seven one eight for Mets Plumbing mets Plumbing
dot com. All right, Mike Cuva gamecoccentral dot Com joins us. Mike,
(43:46):
Welcome in, buddy.
Speaker 3 (43:47):
It's all right, swany right, just like the game this week,
So South Carolina playing on a Sunday, everything gets pushed
back a day.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
Yeah, that's it. Yeah, we're trying. We're doing this for
the Gamecock faithful, making sure everything's in sync for the
big game over in Atlanta against Virginia Tech. More on
that one than a minute, but I want to start
with the biggest news over the last week since you
and I taught the Southeastern Conference, going to nine conference
(44:14):
games and looking at some of the schedules out there,
whether it's Alabama or whoever. I mean, there are teams
that already have a couple of power for game schedules,
South Carolina being one of them. Clemson's there every year.
They've got matchups with Miami and Clemson some seasons. How
concerned are you We just saw yesterday Alabama drop their
(44:35):
game with West Virginia and pick up a matchup against
East Carolina. I mean, are some of these not necessarily
Clemson in South Carolina? Okay, let me let me pump
the brakes on the panic in people thinking that. But
are some of these other games you think in peril
for the game Cocks?
Speaker 3 (44:51):
Oh, no question. I mean it's incredible how quickly things
have shuffled. You mentioned Alabama drop in West Virginia, and
then what happened right after that, Coastal picks them up.
So Coastal's going to be playing West Virginia they just
announced yesterday. Obviously there's a connection with Coastal's ex president
that's now the president over at West Virginia. So I think, look,
(45:13):
if you're South Carolina, and I go back to some
of the comments that Shane Beamer said at SEC media
days just a few weeks ago. He wants to do
what's in the best interests of the university and what's
going to help South Carolina. But at the same time too,
as he also said, he understands how important that game is.
I think if we got to a point, since we
(45:37):
got to a point where that the if it wasn't
for the fact that that stipulation of having to play
that everyone had to play at least one other power
for team, could I see South Carolina looking at it
slightly different. Yes. Now that's not to say South Carolina
would move on from Clemson, but I think with the
(45:59):
fact that that's the pulation is in there, I think
that rivalry is okay. It's going to be safe. Now
that's obviously from the South Carolina's perspective. I don't think
Clemson's going to change it. But again, over the next
couple of years we keep seeing changes to the ACC.
Does it ever get to a point where they feel
like things could change, which is language of how they
(46:19):
want needs to play. So I think if you're USC
you're feeling good about that making sure the rivalry is good,
but you have to also look at it. Is it
in our best interest to go out and play in Miami,
you know. So it's look, everyone plays some type of
cupcake or a game that they feel like is more
(46:39):
of a okay, that should just be an automatic win, right,
And we see some upsets occasionally. But I think if
you're South Carolina, I mean're looking at what they have
coming up. I think the game that I would move
on from would be Miami. And it would be really
easy too, because if you move on from Miami, that's
a home and home, so that takes care of one
year in the year after that.
Speaker 2 (46:58):
That's a great point. Mike again, Mike on Twitter at
Mike Underscore UVA. Additionally, you know, at this time of
the year, if you're a football fan, the thing you
are hoping to not hear is about any injuries. And
I know that Shane Beemer talked about in the fact
today that you know, South Carolina hasn't had any new
(47:19):
additional injuries. Guys have just been banged up and they're
they're recovering and getting back soft tissue stuff, if you will, Mike.
But from your standpoint being a guy that played the game,
I mean, how much has that aspect like healing guys
changed in your opinion, and even more so the types
of technology that maybe South Carolina and other Power five
(47:42):
schools can utilize to help get guys right for game day.
I mean, how big of a difference is it from
when you played to where we are right now?
Speaker 3 (47:50):
Well, it's massive. You know, it's funny. Is because it's funny.
I think back to my very first year playing college football.
So this is twenty ten number, our coach addressing us,
and we're all sitting like in bleachers in the basketball jamp.
This goes to show the difference for D two ers
D one, right, and he was talking about camp and
(48:11):
you know, explain to the freshman how it's going to
be tough. But he's like, man, he's like, now with
some of these rules, he's like, it's going to be
Camp candy Land. Now, mind you, we're still doing two
a days. So I say that because this is fifteen
something years ago, and when you think of now, obviously
there's less physical warranty and that's good and bad. Yes,
that limits the number of injuries, you would think, because
(48:33):
there's going to be less opportunities to go out there
have to do doubles and all that kind of stuff.
And there's going to be more classroom work, but you're
also taking away the repetition that you sometimes need to
be able to acclimate your body. And I think when
we see if you go back and I don't have
the data in front of me, this is just something
that I feel like it's like the eye test, never
(48:54):
mind the play in terms of whether it be the NFL,
whether it be college football. That's why play on I think,
especially over the last couple of years, has been a
little bit more sloppy because you don't have as many
reps as you were getting before when you were doing
doubles and everything like that. But I also think that's
why we see a little bit more injuries early on
across the board, not specifically saying South Carolina. So that's
(49:17):
just something to keep an eye on. Having said that,
though in camp it's certainly going to limit the number
of injuries. And to your point, yes, the data that
we have the technologormology, I think more fans that becoming
more aware of Catapult, and I know there's some other companies,
but the catapula they look like a sports bra and
(49:37):
a guy right, and it reads your heart rate and
your heart rhythm. All that kind of stuff, So you know,
you think of those things too. And on top of
all those soft tissues stuff. I think of one thing
that South Carolina did a couple of years ago, Swanda.
I think it was actually ahead of maybe two years ago,
because South Carolina had a lot of soft tissue injuries
and it happened a lot to the offensive lineman. They
(49:57):
started doing before they did their beginning of practice with
stretching everything, they did a period called their activation period.
That was something that Beamer implemented after talking with Luke Day,
and that was something just to be able to get
the body loosened up. And I was listening to an
interview that Stephen Garcia and Pat DeMarco do. They do
(50:18):
a show called Tailgate Talks, and they interviewed Nick Harbor
and Harbor was talking about that and talking about just
those little fibers and obviously Harbor track guy, right. So
I think being able to do those little things have
helped them with those little small tissue injuries. But again,
when you're playing a sport that's not a context for
football is a collision sport. You're meant to collide your
(50:41):
body with someone else. There's going to be injuries, but
to do those little things, I think that's what's helping
them out the most.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
Again, Mike, you've a with us Gamecockcentral dot Com, the
website South Carolina fans getting to join us here today
to hear the latest news out of Columbias. They get
geared up to face Virginia Tech. Now, Mike, the last
time you and I kind of spoke about this game,
one of the things that I talked about was the
fact that I had a chance to sit down with
Brent Prye at the ACC kickoff, and he reminds me
(51:10):
of all the great coaches out there in the sense
of I think he can convince you that you are
better than you believe you are, and I think that's
a big part of success at the collegiate level. I
think Shane Beemer is also masterful in that capacity. Now,
Kyron Drones. A year ago, the quarterback at Virginia Tech
was you know, it was kind of hyped. He was
(51:33):
playing cam Ward as cousin early in the season, and
the winner of that game might very well have gone
on to win the Heisman Trophy either way. I don't know,
but Kyron Drones never really recovered from a slow start
a year ago. They got a new offensive coordinator there,
and I talked in hour one about how with all
these great games around the country this weekend, one of
(51:54):
the unique things about Clemson and LSU is Cade Clubneck
and Garrett nuss Meyer, two guys that have been in
the program, been in the system. And now for Kyne Drones,
who was a transfer originally, but he's been at Virginia
Tech for a few years. And conversely, you've got Lenora
Sellers with the South Carolina game Cocks. It's also two
pretty seasoned quarterbacks. I mean, how much concern should South
(52:18):
Carolina have that Kyrone Drones with a new offensive coordinator
might be the guy that people thought he was going
to be a year ago.
Speaker 3 (52:28):
Well, I think anytime you go up against a new
offensive coordinator, whether it be an offensive one defense, I
think offense obviously certainly grabs the most attention, and you
know from Virginia Tech to deal with both sides, right,
So I think from an offensive standpoint, it gives you,
It forces you to take away from other aspects of
(52:50):
practice that maybe you want to pay more attention to. Now.
Of course, you know South Carolina they spend a lot
of time on special teams that goes without saying, right,
and that's why they've been one of the best special
teams units in the country since Steamer arrived. Having said that, though,
do I believe even though it's the first week of
the season, once they got into this week, even though probably,
(53:10):
like I said, they probably sorted implemented Virginia Tech going
back to last week, but there were some things I'm
sure where they had to cut back on areas of
what they would typically do because they wanted to make
sure they focused more on preparing for the different looks
that could be coming. And how do you do that
(53:31):
while you look at not only what Virginia Tech did
last year, right and with the quarterback and everyone that's
gone back, but you also look at the offensive coordinator
and where he was at before. So it just all
it does is it distracts you. And I say distracts,
but it just it forces you to take away from
time that you would want to spend, whether it be
(53:51):
in this area that area, to focus more on something
that you might not even see. And I think that
unknown element is certainly something that could help with you
the Tech early on, and that's something South Carolina has
to prepare for be ready for Mike.
Speaker 2 (54:04):
You've again on Twitter at Mike underscore UVA. Additionally, Mike,
we kind of touched on this as well, the celebrations
of the Beamer family in this matchup and Shane's father
giving the invocation and everybody being recognized there. I was
talking about this on yesterday's program, So I'll get your
(54:25):
thoughts on this. Does Shane Beamer, because you know Clipson
has got a similar situation I talked about with Dabo. Right,
does Shane Beamer root for Virginia Tech every weekend except
for the weekends that they're playing South Carolina? Is that
a Is that a clear cut yes?
Speaker 3 (54:42):
He might not say it's a yes, but I'm sure
that's there. And it's not only because of his father,
but I'm sure it's because of the fact that he
also went there, right. I mean, that's how I look
at it right now. But but you know these coaches,
like if you were to ask him that you know,
we weren't able to get in to his mind, He's
going to give you the political correct answer. Well, you
(55:04):
know what, like, yeah, I coached there, Well I coached
the Oklahoma Like I want to see all these it's
late seen. It's all sure Alma Mada.
Speaker 2 (55:11):
See I think he him, I think polls for Alabama.
Speaker 3 (55:17):
Oh yeah, Well there's buddies. There's buddies in mine. Like
at the end of the day, Yes, they're going to
look out for themselves in my job more than anything
out like that goes without saying like at the end
of the day, who's paying for your bills?
Speaker 4 (55:28):
Right?
Speaker 3 (55:30):
But having said that, if it's not going to impact
you directly, right, And obviously Dabbo has certainly been him
some playoff races to be able to, you know, go
up against Alabama. I'm not saying head to head, but
in terms of like you know, right standings and all
that kind of stuff, like yes, like obviously he's gonna
want to see Alabama. What's both. But I mean I've
talked to some of my buddies or people that uh,
(55:52):
you know I coached under or I played under excuse me,
your coaches, and there are different places like they're always
going to pull for their Alma Mada unless for whatever
reason they had a very bad experience. So there are
some unique cases. But for a guy like Beamer, because
of the pedigree of his spot or and everything. I'm
sure he's always falling for detect even if he's not
publicly coming out of.
Speaker 2 (56:12):
Saying, you know, you hit the nail on the head.
I said the exact same thing I said, you know,
I think that when Alabama's playing Auburn Clemson, Dablosweeney would
always pull for Alabama unless Clemson was like on the
outside of the playoff and Alabama was in front of
them and he felt like if Auburn beat Alabama it
would help Clemson. I don't think he would ever root
(56:35):
for Alabama to the detriment of his team. I think
it's the same for Shane Beemer. I think it's interesting
that both programs not only have similar head coaches, I
think in the way they have built their programs, but
maybe in terms of their loyalty in a lot of
respects to another major brand in the world of college football.
(56:57):
It makes Dablosweeny and Shane Beemer unique. I also so
I think it's the reason that those guys really get
along quite well. Again, Mike, you've hanging out with us
here for a few more minutes. This Saturday will be
the final ESPN College Game Day. Would Lee Corso Mike,
I had a chance to sit down this week and
watch ESPN put together that little documentary called Not So Fast,
(57:19):
my Friend, and I would be lying to you if
I said I didn't get a little bit emotional just
watching that. And my takeaway from it was I believe,
Mike that Lee Corso being away from college game day
is going to have a much bigger impact than people think.
I know he hasn't had the same amount of camera
(57:40):
time as he had ten fifteen years ago, but I
think that he's a bigger part of our collective college
football lives than we recognize. And I really think next weekend,
not this coming, I think next weekend, we're really gonna
feel it.
Speaker 3 (57:56):
Now, it's gonna feel weird. I mean, just think of
the times when he wasn't there because of for the health, anstrues,
or whatever the case may be. You know, it's just
one of those things that you've always just expected them
to be. When he's not, it feels with so, what's
going to happen? And we know that it's this is
how it's going to be.
Speaker 8 (58:16):
I mean for me, you know, I think that obviously
it's a kid teen to put the headway around, but
I also think too just playing n cua a a
kid and seeing him do it when they went when
they implemented that, and it just goes to show and
that was that was something where he transcended things. And
it's I always think about this one, especially in the
(58:38):
industry that you and I are both in, and he
said it so perfectly that football is in the vehicle,
but we're in the show business, right, this is entertainment
and he really understood that. And especially when you're talking
about waking up on Saturdays and you know each week,
or going to different schools, but on top of that,
you have different fan bases and you're trying to connect
(58:59):
to you and everyone can be able to find a
way to be able to connect with every fan base
in the same way. But it seemed like Lee Corso
was one of those people who are mergy.
Speaker 6 (59:10):
No.
Speaker 2 (59:10):
I agree. I think that you know, his ability to
get the casual fan like I mean, this is not
to say that college football is just for the males
out there, but he is a guy like the females
would say, hey, has Corso made his pick, like his
(59:31):
helmet selection is bigger? Then I'll be honest, I think
it was bigger than anything on college game day, and
maybe still is the only thing getting close is that
field goal kicking thing that Pat McAfee has sort of
wrangled into the new fangled thing that you must see
(59:52):
on Saturdays because Lee Corso's pick. Like, if I was
out doing yard work Mike back in the day at
eleven forty five on a Saturday, I'm like, I got
to go inside for fifteen minutes just to see what
Lea does, see what he picks.
Speaker 3 (01:00:07):
No, it was it was oh and never disappointed, right,
and never disappointed. And I think and what I hope.
Speaker 8 (01:00:13):
More than anything, Jannie is because of over the last
couple of years, the fact that obviously help getting older
from health standpoint two, which is Evin and I just
hope that's not how he's remembered, right. You think about
the time when he was in his prime and moving around,
and I mean, it was an electric factor.
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
Mike, Man, have a great week, enjoy the college football games.
We'll talk to you soon, Buddy.
Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
I appreciate this money.
Speaker 2 (01:00:40):
There you go, that's Mike. You have a Gamecockcentral dot
Com talking a little college football with us today. Coming
up in the next segment, we're gonna jump into some
other conversations with Garrett Riley, and then before the back
end of the show, I think we'll slide back into
some more from k club ning. Now we've got Tom Allen.
(01:01:01):
We gotta get you this week. I mean it's it's
jammed up. Tomorrow's Tim Bray. I think Facts and Childress
is gonna be making a little drive by with us
tomorrow or maybe Friday. Will certainly have Will Van der
Voort on getting you geared up for this matchup between
Clemson and LSU at home under the lights. The storylines
(01:01:23):
are are limitless here and one of the big things
I think you've you gotta have happen, you know, if
you're gonna win this game is I think you gotta
win the turnover battle. I'm not sure you can lose
the turnover battle in this opening weekend and feel comfortable
about winning this game. Now, A pick six, a scoring play,
(01:01:47):
you know, something like that that is backbreaking in these
type games, absolutely backbreaking, because again, like I said yesterday,
you don't know much about who you are. You think
you know, and you might actually be that by the
end of the year. But in week one, when you
get your nose bloodied? Can you respond? And if you
(01:02:09):
get your nose bloodied in that fashion, how do you
handle it? That's significant for both teams quite frankly. All right,
we'll hear more from Garrett Riley when we return the show.
This Shakes to southlanda Clempson Sports Talk on a Wednesday.
So we heard some of Garrett Riley's comments a little
bit earlier in the show. And for those of you
just getting in the car making your way home at
(01:02:30):
the five o'clock hour, do want to get into some
other stuff that he had to say. And again, we
spread this stuff across our social media channels. We put
this stuff on our website as well in articles, et cetera,
et cetera, So there are a lot of ways to
consume it. Please come join us Clempsonsports talt dot com
and again support all of the sponsors who stand behind us.
(01:02:52):
But you two can stand behind us as well for
just sixty three dollars and seventeen cents. That's right, game cognation.
I said it sixty three seventeen So you.
Speaker 6 (01:03:02):
Could continue to peek over the fence at the best
radio showing the.
Speaker 2 (01:03:06):
Naked the late great Cleveland Man there. But you can
come and be a part of what we do and
support us one dollar for three months. And if you
like what you see on our website, it's not all premium,
it's not flooded with advertisements like so many sites are.
It's actually it is. It is actually an enjoyable online experience.
(01:03:28):
Clemson sports Talk dot com. All right, more from Garrett
Riley as he met with the media yesterday up in Tigertown,
and he talked about how k Clubnick aids the offense
given the fact that he's been around and been in
the system. But he was also asked about Clubnic reaching
a new level. And I mentioned putting stuff out on
(01:03:49):
social media. This was one that we put out, So
make sure you follow us on TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram,
all the places we are. Where you are, we are,
go follow us. But years Garrett Riley talking about that
and how Kate Clubnick can indeed reach a new level.
Speaker 5 (01:04:07):
I mean, there's certainly a ton of room. I've said
this all along, I've said it to his face. I mean,
he knows this is there's there's another level for him
and that's what he's chasing, and that's what we're all chasing,
So I just think different parts of his game, whether
it's it's just some routine, automatic plays, is really probably
the main charge that I've given him, you know, coming
(01:04:27):
away from last season, is he's the type of player
that you know, when routine, routine plays are there, routine
things are there, we got to hit those every time.
Like he's that caliber of a player. And so that's
been the big charge. But this game is going to
continue to slow down for him, I think as this
season goes on, and he's heading into his senior year,
so expect a lot of big things from him for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
Gert Riley was also asked about how comfortable he is
if Kate Klubnick makes a change on a call in
the red zone. How good does he feel about where
Kate Clebnick is with the system?
Speaker 4 (01:04:58):
Yeah, with him and our our offense as a whole.
Speaker 5 (01:05:01):
Those guys know me, and they know kind of our
system and what we're about, how we want to attack,
maybe how we want to check.
Speaker 4 (01:05:07):
Or get out of a bad player or whatever.
Speaker 5 (01:05:08):
Like just not just him, but offensive line and the staff,
like everybody just kind of really being in sync. That's
such a huge key that not a lot of people
really realize like there's continuity from the staff standpoint too.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
Riley was also asked to identify the leaders on this
offense outside of K clubneck.
Speaker 4 (01:05:27):
I think we got a bunch, I really do.
Speaker 5 (01:05:29):
I think Antonio Williams has grown into a great leader.
Just have a ton of respect for him and the
way that he goes about his business. I mean, he's
a pro, He's a professional. I think we got several
guys up front that.
Speaker 4 (01:05:41):
Lead in their own way. I mean Tristan Lee.
Speaker 5 (01:05:43):
Blake Miller, Ryan Lentthcom started for us and played more
snaps than anybody on our team last year. And he's
a guy that a lot of people on our team
kind of gravitate towards. So Adam Randall certainly is a
leader in every sense of the word, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:05:57):
So I just I feel like we.
Speaker 5 (01:05:58):
Got I feel like we got a collection enough people
that can kind of spread the wealth a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
So a lot of solid names brought up there by
Garrett Riley. He was also asked about Tyler Brown's return,
and again, I think this could be a as long
as Tyler Brown stays healthy, I think he will be
a surprising piece to the Clemson offensive puzzle for people
they forgot about him. Here's what Garrett Riley had to
say about Tyler Brown's return from injury.
Speaker 4 (01:06:23):
Yeah. I just can't wait to see him play.
Speaker 5 (01:06:24):
I mean, the guy's been practicing really really well spring football,
was healthy, was fast, and was a consistent practice player,
and then the same thing following it up here in
fall camp.
Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
So I'm certainly glad he's back. He's a heck of.
Speaker 5 (01:06:40):
A player, you know, one I can't wait to see
play the season again.
Speaker 4 (01:06:43):
And being healthy.
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
Now, yesterday we talked about the quarterback situation and what
I think Clempson could do if Christopher Vezina had to
be quarterback. Here's Garrett Raley talked about what he's seen
from Bozena during the fall.
Speaker 6 (01:06:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:06:56):
I've definitely seen growth with him, and a lot of
it was kind of the consistency was kind of the
first check the box, like, hey, this is where we
have to grow, Like this is the first priority for him.
It's just becoming more consistent. And then with that, because
that improved, then you saw just some more playmaking ability,
you know, as he got reps in fall camp and
scrimmages and things of that nature. Where he's put in
(01:07:18):
real situations. You know, I was able to really see
some true playmaking ability from him, So that was that.
Speaker 4 (01:07:24):
Was certainly great to see.
Speaker 5 (01:07:25):
So definitely a step in the right direction for CV,
no question about it.
Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
Garrett Riley was also asked about just the preparation to
face off with LSU and what that's been like.
Speaker 5 (01:07:35):
I mean, you're going to prepare for their scheme. Now
we know that there's different people. I'm gonna be people
in different spots than what we're watching on film. But
that's always the fun mystery of Game ones. They're going
to do some things a little differently i'm sure schematically
than they did a year ago, and that's just kind
of part of Game ones, you know. So again it
kind of really just comes back to us being prepared obviously,
(01:07:56):
but us understanding and trusting our problems, trusting our rules
and really being great at the little things and the details.
That's it's just going to come back to that for
us really, no matter what they do, like that's got
to be what we focus on.
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
Final theme from Garrett Riley. He did talk about a
couple of other things, but he was asked about Hunter
Helm's returning as sort of a player coach and you
know what Hunter Helms's impact can be for this team.
Speaker 5 (01:08:24):
Yeah, I mean he's been great, you know, kind of
the Paul Tyson role this year, but Hunter's been awesome.
I mean he knows our system, he knows me, he
knows what we're about and how we work and how
we attack and just philosophy stuff. So he's been great
and obviously a great veteran guy to to kind of
have there as an emergency if you need them.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
So there you go. That's some audio from Garrett Riley
and again we've got that covered, scattered, smothered, and covered
like the hash browns at waffle house for you on
our social media accounts on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, again, whatever
media platform you are on, we are probably dropping some
(01:09:02):
of our content, whether it's videos, whether it's stories. And
if you see our work or our logo, please share it.
There are imitators that are out there, for sure, with
some of the names that came along after we got
things gunning up, so to speak. But please, when you
see that logo, you can't miss it. You know what
(01:09:23):
our tiger head looks like. Share our work, help us
continue to grow and go to our website, Clemson Sports
Talk dot com. That's Clemson Sports talt dot com. All right,
with a quick break, we'll come back with more here
on a Wednesday afternoon and again a lot of games
coming up tomorrow in the world of college football. A
(01:09:46):
quick rundown of the slate if you will. As the
man I could dream that they Ruth once said, when
we return Clemson's Sports THWT to show the shakes to
south Land Lawton Swan on a Wednesday Cake Club Nick.
We heard from him a little bit earlier on the show.
We'll dive back into some of what he had to say.
And again, thinking to Mike Eva for joining us at
(01:10:10):
the top of the hour. Hey, don't forget about our
friends in Alumni Hall by the way, on the corner
of campus on College Avenue with Downtown Clemson. It's Alumni
Hall for all your officially licensed Clemson merchandise, hats, T shirts, Tailgate,
Geared Moore go check them out today or online at
Alumni Hall dot com. It's Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop.
Don't forget to ask them about their Alumni Hall Rewards
(01:10:32):
program so you could save a little bit of money
when you shop and don't forget. Hey, if you want
to save some money and you're a Clemson student, faculty member,
or in the military, you get ten percent off when
shopping in store at Alumni Hall. All right. K Clubnick
met with the media earlier today and he was asked
about having the same mentality for each game to see
(01:10:53):
this season, regardless of the opponent.
Speaker 7 (01:10:58):
I feel like we faced it last year to just
you know, with with who we played last year, and
I feel like we've we're kind of used to that of.
Speaker 6 (01:11:06):
Just I don't I don't know, it's it's I think we.
Speaker 7 (01:11:13):
Kind of lived it out last year and saw how
it went through, and you know, it's just it's it's
another game, and it's it's a huge game.
Speaker 6 (01:11:20):
And but so always Week three, you.
Speaker 7 (01:11:23):
Know, and you just have to have that mentality because
you know, when it really comes down to it, it's
it's it's gonna be a number on your record.
Speaker 6 (01:11:31):
It's gonna just be another tally.
Speaker 7 (01:11:33):
So we got to go take care of business this week,
no matter who's on the other side, you know, because
when he's gonna say it every single week, but we're
playing Clemson, and if Clemson beats Clemson, then we're gonna win. Well, actually,
if Clemson doesn't be Clemson and we're not gonna win.
So we got to you know, take care of business
and do what we do. Take care of the ball,
get takeaways, Uh, be efficient, you know, no mental airs,
(01:11:56):
and just.
Speaker 6 (01:11:56):
Do what we do.
Speaker 7 (01:11:57):
You know, make the routine. Please make the routine. Plays
routinely and do what we do. I think we have
a really good plan going into it. But yeah, when
it comes to the season, it's a long season. I
just gotta go do what we do weekend and week out.
Speaker 2 (01:12:10):
So that's kay, club Nick. I I'm not sure about
the we just gotta beat Clemson or you know, not
beat yourself basically, I think is what he's trying to say.
And I get that, but I mean my thing is
you just you gotta play your best game. You gotta
(01:12:30):
what was dabos when you say, Kate win, the one win,
the rep win, this snap on and on and on.
Kate Clubneck was also asked about whether he feels like
the continuity on offense has allowed Garrett Riley the ability
to do more teaching during fall camp than maybe installation
(01:12:55):
like you had to do in the past, I think so.
Speaker 7 (01:12:59):
And just finding wrinkles too, you know, find more wrinkles
in the game and and more freedoms throughout the offense
for us to just kind of have feel for the
game and you know, kind of put some more on
the receivers and offensive line and stuff and you know,
instead of maybe just you know, run and drawing sometimes
a little bit more freedoms there.
Speaker 6 (01:13:20):
So yeah, I think so.
Speaker 7 (01:13:22):
I think that's a great way of putting it, not
not as much just installing all the time. You know,
we get to spring and it's kind of like you
look around and we don't have you know, we had
one freshman receiver.
Speaker 3 (01:13:35):
You know, we.
Speaker 7 (01:13:37):
Just kind of have who we have and everybody kind
of knows the plays already and obviously weeked week installs
and stuff that we're going to insolve our certain teams,
but we kind of know what to do, and it's like,
all right now, we're just really perfecting doing what we
do at a really really high rate.
Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
So that's Clemson quarterback k club Nick again final a
couple of things from him as he met with the
media earlier today up in Clemson, And again, I think
when you look at that twenty eight to seven loss
to Duke the first game they played in that system
under Garrett Riley. I asked him about that the acc kickoff.
(01:14:14):
It saw his face and you could tell. I mean,
I know the game's stung, but I think some of
it was a byproduct of a new system, new coordinator,
high expectations, and everything that came along with that. I
think he was like a puppy. Man, He's like a
puppy and now he's really really matured. Here's k Klubnick
(01:14:35):
talking about how Taj Boyd, former Clemson Tiger quarterbacks, helped
him in his development as a quarterback at Clemson.
Speaker 6 (01:14:45):
Yeah, Man, Taj is man Taj.
Speaker 7 (01:14:48):
I would say probably, I'll probably closest with top three,
closest with them in this facility, and probably in my
life right now, just in terms of the way that
he's been there for me through it all, through my
sophomore year, through last year, through this year. Just from
a quarterback perspective, you just see it different, you know,
you see the game different, and he's lived it. He's
(01:15:08):
lived it here. You know, he's been in this exact
same not justly this exact room, but he's been in
this room.
Speaker 6 (01:15:14):
I mean, he's he's.
Speaker 7 (01:15:15):
Sat where I sat, and to have that perspective is
just different, you know, it's it's a different perspective than
coach Riley Brings and coach Sweeney Brings and maybe somebody
else brings. So to have him just right there just
knowing what I'm going through and everything, it's just it's
awesome and just honestly such a blessing to have him
in the room with me every single day post practice
(01:15:36):
talking stuff through, you know, pre pre practice, during practice,
post practice, talking stuff through and seeing what he's seeing,
seeing maybe I missed something, maybe I can do something better.
But then also just talking life, seeing how we're handling
you know, this stuff off the field and everything like that,
and just you know, trying to be the best me
I can be. And I feel like he's definitely done
(01:15:57):
an incredible job of doing that.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
So final thing from kid Club Nick, and we put
this out on our social media earlier today, so make
sure you follow us on TikTok, on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram,
all of those different platforms. About the false message that
came out on the mess the false rumor that came
out on a message board that said that he had
been in a car accident. Here's Cage's response to that.
Speaker 4 (01:16:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:16:23):
Yeah, I was sitting home just hanging on my roommates
and my mom calls me, you know, crying and I'm like,
what's going on, you know, and she's just like tearing
up a can I seeing if I'm okay, and I'm like, yeah,
I'm fine, what's going on? She you know, saw the
post that dude or whoever posted, but that was the
(01:16:48):
first thing I heard of it, and then you know,
the calls and text started coming in. But man, just
you know, I don't know who it was, but man,
just shame on them for the pain that they had
to put people that I love through. So I'm not
really you know, interested in talk about it anymore. But
you know, it was just it was a messed up
(01:17:08):
joke and whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
But I'm okay, there you go, kay Clubs, So handling
it I really like a pro. And yeah, that's a
that's a tough situation because you know that it's going
to get back to his mom and she's certainly gonna panic.
All right, final segment, Flip Side Keep It Locked. Ray
Are on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred.
Speaker 6 (01:17:32):
What have you done for me lately. It's a fair question.
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Looky for us at Clemson. The answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately?
Speaker 4 (01:17:50):
And what have you done? Always are the same. We win.
Speaker 2 (01:18:45):
Final segment on a Wednesday afternoon. Thank you again to
Mike Eva, and thank you to all of our listeners
for being a part of the program and those of
you who have helped us by supporting us over on
our website, Clemson sports Talk dot com. Really been trying
to push that social media piece, really been trying to
(01:19:05):
push things on our website as well. And if you
want to support us, jump in. A dollar gets you
in the door. After that, sixty three dollars and seventeen
cents for one year of coverage of your Clemson Tigers
again as we get you ready for this huge matchup
to open the season and just a marquee primetime game.
(01:19:32):
I mean, it is this is what college football is about.
These are the games that I think we all hope
would be delivered when the College Football Playoff expanded, that
teams would embrace this more. I hate the whole situation
with the SEC going to nine games. I think it
(01:19:54):
just steals opportunity from our fans, you know, fans of sport,
of this sport, fans of programs around the Southeastern Conference.
I mean, it just it robs you of the chance
(01:20:15):
to see your team play Miami if you're South Carolina
for example. And again that game is still in the schedule,
but you know, I think it's in peril. And and
I know conference rivals are a big deal and they're fun,
and yeah, it's great to get to play these teams
(01:20:38):
that you've been playing for so many years. But don't
kid yourself. Almost to a person, every one of you,
if given the opportunity to lock into a game against
a team that's not in your conference, that's meaningful, playing Michigan,
(01:21:00):
Io State, you want to do that. And now there's
a there's also the byproduct of the playoff that delivers
some of those games, right, Like Clemson and Texas never
played before and they got to play this past year
(01:21:20):
in the College Football Playoff and that was great, and
that's part of what the playoff does deliver. But the
extra games in conference, and I might argue because of
the way the playoff works, it even it's a bad idea.
I think we might be staging ourselves for a situation
(01:21:41):
legitimately where teams play each other three times in one season,
And do we really want that for college football too?
Like do we want to see Georgia Alabama Part one,
two and three? And in the in the NFL that
(01:22:04):
works with the way you know, the scheduling plays out,
like teams play a couple of teams in their division twice,
maybe they hook up in the playoffs. It's not I
guess the worst thing in that scenario, But I feel
like the better thing is more variety in the sport,
and I think we're we're getting away from that a
(01:22:25):
little bit. The best news, though, of all on it
might kind of come from a strange area, and that's
that this landscape is shifting so rapidly that maybe by
the time we really get to complain about it, we've
revamped the whole thing again, Like we've given the whole
(01:22:46):
thing a once over and and and now you're playing
a multitude of different teams. I just hope that we
never cross over into a world where rivals like Clemson
in South Carolina and Florida and Florida State, you know
rivals like that, non conference rivals. My sincere hope is
(01:23:12):
that we never cross over into a realm where the
non conference rival ends up not taking place because of
conference affiliations and conference games having to take place and
(01:23:33):
taking precedent, and in fan bases or maybe not fan bases,
administrations fearing that their schedule's too tough. I mean, if
there's one thing that bothers me about some of these
games coming off the books, like Alabama in West Virginia,
is we're in a an era where you can go
(01:23:56):
get beat and you can still be in the college
football playoff. So why run away from measuring stick games,
especially if you're a top flight team. Go play somebody else,
Go put it on the line, because if you're as
(01:24:17):
good as you think, you'll still be in the playoffs.
So why avoid that situation like the plague? Go play
those games. But maybe the landscape continues to shift. Who knows.
I mean, it's changed so much. I feel like it's
just in the time I've been on the air, I
feel like it's a completely different sport. All right, we'll
(01:24:38):
be back to talk more about it on Thursday. Until then,
it's always you'll take care now and Go Tigers
