of the gates here on a Tuesday, Jed Donahue joins us. Jed,
welcome in. How are you?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I am? Thank you, sir.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
So let's talk about the goings on in Penn State
right now. Obviously over the weekend, James Franklin, they get
defeated their third straight loss to Northwestern. Now, what what
was kind of your vibe going into that game? And
did you feel like if they lost to Northwestern that
this could indeed be the end?

Speaker 4 (02:30):
No, I never thought it would be the end if
they had lost to Northwestern. I mean it's bad, don't
get me wrong. The UCLA loss following the white out
loss to you know, Oregon double overtime. I think they
just felt that maybe things were untenable. Following Northwestern. You've
got like thirty thousand fans saying fire, James Franklin, he

(02:54):
lost the alumni base.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Excuse men, And to.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
Be honest with I think a lot of the donors
has been kind of waiting for an opportunity maybe to
move on from him. That just you know, they need
to raise a lot of money here seven hundred million
dollars on a new Beaver Stadium renovation project, and I
just think that the message grew stale and they decided

(03:21):
to make a move.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Now again, Jed don Hue with US the PA Sports Network.
He's been covering Penn State for thirty eight years, so
really getting the inside scoop on all of this. So
is there any truth, in your opinion to the speculation
that Adidas had something to do with this, that they
were ready to move on, Because if you think that
might be the case, we are entering a whole new

(03:44):
era of corporate influence on college sports.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
Wow, that is interesting. I mean that's been floating around
over the last couple of days long then. You know,
I don't know that's true or not. You know, we're
you know, the shoe company or the appare guys like
Nike or Adidas are dictating coaching moves and things like that.
You know, there's word that Adidas is kicking in money

(04:09):
to pay the fifty six million dollar buyout and all
of that sort of thing. I hope that's not true,
but you know, I guess one of these days we'll
find out for real.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
You know. The other thing that I couldn't help but
recognize is the fact that one, you had a program
in UCLA who fired their head coach and then immediately
saw results in beat Penn State. That has to be
in the mind's eye of Penn State fans when that happens.
And then I think the other thing that's maybe negatively influenced,

(04:44):
sort of the thought process on making a move mid
season in this early with James Franklin, might be what
we see happening at Texas A and M right where
Mike Elko they get rid of Jimbo Fisher and pay
seventy six million dollars and now they're in the top five,
and everything feels hunky dory, And I just kind of
wonder to myself if Penn State's influencers or you know,

(05:07):
the people that have the big pocketbooks, go hey, we
want that, and we want it now. Do you think
there's anything to the fact that one, they just played
UCLA who made a change and it's seeing results in two,
the fact that it wasn't just a few short years
ago Texas A and M was in the same boat.
It made a move and it seems to work out.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Yeah, that's an interesting parallel that you're drawing right there
with Texas A and M. I mean, here's the bottom
line of what goes on here. And you and I
talked a lot over the summer. You were kind enough
to be on my program and are still is that?

Speaker 3 (05:44):
You know, they walked us roster back.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
They had all these veteran guys. The quarterback was backed,
the running backs are back, They're two top defensive linemen
are back. They've got a veteran secondary. I mean, all
of this was in place. The offensive line was supposedly
one of the best in the country. Well, it all underachieved,
and you know, it just went south after they lost

(06:09):
that double overtime game to Oregon. I mean, this was
national championship game or bust. Considering they made it all
the way to the national semifinals, lost on the last
second field goal last year to Notre Dame, and so
the disappointment is profound when they're sitting there at three

(06:29):
and three now looking at half the schedule remaining and
that they have no shot at the playoff, and I
think they decided to make a move now to you know,
survey the country and see who they can bring in here.
But they are desperate here to win a national championship.

(06:50):
They have won one since nineteen eighty six. They've been
close here or there on the periphery, but they have
one since nineteen eighty six. And you know, Franklin's in
his twelfth year, has a horrible record against the ap
top ten. He's got an eight game losing street Ohio State,
which is kind of their de facto rival. They've lost

(07:13):
Foreigner Road to Michigan, so they're not beating the big
boys in the Big ten. And the other thing is
they don't do anything with a non conference schedule. It
did nothing to get them ready for this season. It
was just soft served. It's just not very good. And
I think they felt it was time to move on.

(07:34):
And I think that their big money boosters had grown
tired of Franklin's ego and you know, things along those lines,
and they just decided, Hey, we're going to bite the
bullet here and we're going to see who we can get.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Jed don Hue with us the PA Sports Network, joining
us to talk about the situation up at Penn State.
James Franklin out over the weekend. So, Jim, who are
the big names that are out there? I know the
ones I've speculated on, and who would you maybe like
to see in that seat this time next season?

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Well, I think their dream scenario would be to get
Matt Rule at Nebraska, who went to Penn State. He's
from state College.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
The problem of the Rule.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Is he's got a massive and I mean massive buyout
at Nebraska. That'd be the guy at the top of
their list. And anybody that says otherwise, no, it's it's
it's Matt Ruhle. That's who they want. You know, you
can say, I don't know what other names you want
to throw on. I mean it's I think it's wide open.

(08:43):
It could it be many dies next year.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Coordinator for two years here?

Speaker 4 (08:50):
What about Matt Campbell at Iowa State whose name always
comes up. I don't think it's him.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
It's anybody's guests.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
I mean, I'd be interested here what you've got to say?

Speaker 1 (09:02):
I mean the other name I throughout the day was
maybe Kirk Signetty. I just don't know how many guys
want to move in the same conference, right, like, how
many guys it'll go?

Speaker 4 (09:12):
I mean, he's got ties to PA's a PA guy,
but he ain't gonna leave Indiana with everything that's going
on there. I mean, they're they're raising money, we're hand
over fist. I don't think he's going to come to
Penn State. I think that's like a dream scenario.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
He's from PA. I get it. But my guess is.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
That, you know, would they be willing to pay another
fifty million dollars to get Matt Ruhle out of that
Nebraska contract? And at this point, if you're doing fifty
six million, what's another fifty to get the.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Guy that you want?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
So I think I think, I think Rule might be
the guy.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Well, it's interesting you know that we're at this point
because it was just a couple of weeks ago that
Clemson was in a very similar situation. I mean, you
and I would we talked this summer. The thought was, hey,
maybe these two teams are going to meet up in
the College Football Playoff. Now they might beat in that,
they might meet up in like the Holiday Bowl or something.
Who knows where they'll end up. But the funny thing

(10:12):
about it is how quickly it can shift, and for
fans like the Clemson people, who listen to this show,
they had such high expectations you start to have to
back it up a little bit and say, Okay, was
it misevaluation or was it lack of effort? I tend
to put Clemson situation. I think it was a lot
of lack of effort. I'm gonna be honest with you.

(10:33):
I think they're starting to turn the corner and you're
seeing that a little bit. What would you say about
Penn State is was it misevaluation? Was it lack of effort?

Speaker 4 (10:43):
I think you lost the clubhouse, to be honest with you,
and the similar as. I think there are similar situations
that we can draw parallels to the body language, you know,
when you lose two games and things like that, and
then after the Northwestern game, he may have lost. He
may have lost the locker room. I mean, we may

(11:04):
never know, because everybody will say the right things. They
did make the right higher for the interim coach and
Terry Smith. I covered Terry's a player here in the
late eighties, great man. It's a good choice for them
to guide through.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
The rest of the year.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
But long I tend to agree with you, I think
he have lost the locker room.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Man, it's amazing how quick.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
I mean, there's a lot of stuff going on here.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Man.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
There really is a lot of things in play that
we may never get really the bottom.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Line answer to.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
But that body language after that lost Saturday and then getting.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Booed into the tunnel, it was rough man. Rough.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
I watched a couple of videos of that and it was,
as you said, rough And I'll give him this. He
stood in there. He liked the captain of an airplane.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Right.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
He was the last got to leave, and he took
all the heat when he came through again. Jed Don
Hue hanging out with us from the PA Sports Network.
He's been covering Penn State for thirty eight years and
he joins us here on the program. So if we
were to give him because this is the other thing
that I kept having to explain to Clemson fans who
won the Dabosweeney fired when they started sluggish this year

(12:15):
at one and three. I had to say, look, guys,
he's got two national championships in his back pocket. You're
not moving on from this guy. He can decide unless
there's a scandal, he can decide when he wants to leave.
If let's just say, James Franklin had won national championships
in twenty sixteen and in twenty eighteen. Do you think

(12:36):
that I'm right in that that sort of makes you
invincible outside of scandal to something like this happening or
in this era, is that all bets are off?

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Jed, Well, they're trying to win one championship here, they
don't have two like Dabo Sweeney does a Clemson and
a couple of runner up finishes. If you've got that
on the resume, then you know he's still the coach
today and we're not having a conversation right now. Right
he'd be, you know, a legend. I mean the old days,
you know, when you won the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl,

(13:06):
the Orange Bowl, which he did. You know, the previous
coach two coaches a go Joe Turner. They put a
statue up for for that. That was the different era
that we're in. But I mean, you know, he did
win a lot of games, but they're just he didn't
win the big games.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
You know, Clemson's won big games.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Penn State has not won big games.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
So let's talk about Drew Aller.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Jed.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
This guy kind of like Kay Klebnick. You felt like,
coming into the season had all the tools and then
it really didn't pan out the way they certainly hoped,
and to be injured and out for the rest of
the season heartbreaking. You do still feel bad for these
young men, right, regardless of how much money they're making
when something like this happens. What's kind of been the

(13:54):
attitude of the fan base over the last couple of
days about Aller in that situation. And it certainly didn't
lead to you know, him being injured late didn't lead
to James Franklin being fired by any means, it didn't
help either. But what are your thoughts on Drew Aller?
And maybe I don't want to call it his legacy,
but just maybe the way fans perceive him.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
Probably an underachieving legacy when it's all said and downe
there was the interception at the end of the the
National semifinal last year that led to Notre Dames game
winning field goal, and so I think that's.

Speaker 6 (14:35):
I mean, you move on.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
Here's the deal is that is he the right fit
for what they need to run here at Penn State.
Bob Prabilla was probably the better fit run pass option
guy who's now Missouri doing pretty good there. He was
a better fit for what James Franklin does, like the
Trace McSorley guy. They had Christiane Hackenberg, who Franklin inhered

(15:00):
when he took over twelve years ago, and it never
worked out at all. He doesn't know what to do
with pro style drop back quarterbacks. Aller needs to move on.
We'll see what NFL Campy ends up in. But he's
gone from being like a guy that everybody thinks might
have been a top ten pick to somebody that's really flawed.

(15:23):
Talking NFL people and things they go, you know, it
might be.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
You know a guy that might go in the third
day or whatever, you know, like a Kyle McCord, those kind.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
Of guys sixth round or whatever. We don't know what
the injury is. Eventually we will, but he just was
not the right fit for what they like to do
and what Franklin likes to do.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
He is a guy that needs.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
A running quarterback, a run pass option guy, and Prabilla
might have been the better fit. So what you're trying
to do, what is that into a square hole or whatever?

Speaker 3 (16:00):
He just wasn't the right fit here.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
PA Sports networks. Jed don Hue with us here for
a few more minutes today.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
The other question named wide receivers. Either they don't have
wide receiver. Yeah, they missed in the portal. They just
have missed on the last two wide receiver coaches. The
wide receiver situation here is a disaster. And you know,
you look at what they did last year, how good
was really Tyler Warren? When you really get down to

(16:28):
it over undercatches, they had no wide receivers make it
catch in the national semifinal. They brought three guys in
at big money and they're just pedestrian. They're not very good.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
So final thing, Jed, let me ask you. Jim Knowles
comes in from Ohio State when Tom Allen comes to Clemson,
and that seems like a huge get. Do you think
he's on the staff next year. I'm not saying he'd
be the head coach, but do you think he'll be
the defensive coordinator?

Speaker 3 (16:58):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (16:59):
About that, And I always thought Knowles is overrated. You
look back at the states at Ohio State, did they
ever get off the field on fourth down against Michigan
or in big games? Gave up five hundred yards against Oregon.
I thought it was a mystifying hire, to be honest
with you, especially at three point two million dollars. I
think the most overrated coordinator in the country, and I

(17:23):
don't think Ohio State put up a big fight to
keep him, to be honest with you, so the answer
is he will not be back. I'm not sure about
Codal making the offensive coordinator. It's all coming down to
whoever the head coaches will make the coordinator hires.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
I don't think either one of those guys is back. Man.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
What a turn of events in Pennsylvania. Penn State James
Franklin out over the weekend after their third consecutive loss.
They went from being in the top three to wanting
a new head coach in a blink. Jed Donu from
the PA Sports Network with us here on a Tuesday. Jed,
thank you so much for your insight. Best of luck
to you guys, and certainly, whenever there's a higher made

(18:04):
at some point down the line, we want to get
you back on to talk about it.

Speaker 4 (18:08):
I'd love to be on with then you'll be on
with us as well. We appreciate you so much, man,
He's the best.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Again, that's Jed Donue from the PA Sports Network.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Wow, what a quick turn, man, What a quick turn
for Penn State. And obviously, I think for it to
happen that quick right mid season, I think you clearly

(18:41):
feel like this was something that had more to do
with performance in big games one in eighteen against Top
ten Big Ten teams and conference play four and twenty
one at Penn State against AP top team opponents. In general,

(19:02):
his point six to zero winning percentage against AP Top
ten teams is tied for the third worst record by
a coach at a single school since the poll began
in nineteen thirty six. The last time Penn State defeated
a top ten opponent from the Big Ten was when
they defeated Ohio State nine years ago, back in twenty sixteen.

(19:26):
So there's a lot of there's a lot of just
historical yuck that I think festered over into a three
game yuck. And the athletic director said, this is not
a three game thing. This is really diving where we
are as a program. That he says, what is the

(19:51):
trajectory of this program? It's all fair point. It's amazing
how quick it turned, But it turned in a hurry
for James Franklin, stay with us, Lawton Swan, Clemson's Sports
All bat with you on a Tuesday. Thanks again to
Jed Donnaue for joining us. You know, one of the
things that is bound to happen with all of this

(20:13):
is the fact that there are going to be coaches
that get their deal bumped, right, Like, whether it's Manny
Diaz at Duke. Maybe you're in the camp that you
think it's Matt Ruhle's job to lose in Nebraska, regardless
those guys like who's the people whose names are in

(20:35):
the mix to me are the ones that are most
likely to benefit from this maneuvering. And look, there might
be a there might have been a day and age,
not all that long ago where even Dabo Sweeney would

(20:56):
have been someone that people would have put into the
conversation and he might get like some fringe mentions. But
with what dabos Sweeney already makes and with what Penn
State's got to pay James Franklin, And in addition to

(21:18):
the fact that you still feel like, regardless of how
you think Clemson has played, you still feel like, if
you're Dabosweeny, that that's much more of a rebuild than
the situation you're dealing with at Clemson. Now, if you're
a guy like Mike norfell right, and you had the
season they had a year ago too and ten and
you're three and three this year in the ACC at

(21:40):
Florida State, you know you got a little hot sea
alert going on. If Penn State comes a calling, man,
I think you jump. And now, look, there are buyouts
that all these coaches have, and that's probably the thing
that I would imagine might begin to be adjusted just
a little bit. I know the coaches won't want it
to be the case, but at some point, the universities

(22:02):
aren't just these cash machines that can just give away
money readily. I mean, at some point you have to say, look, man,
you're making eight million dollars a year. That's a lot
of money. You'll probably still have some things built in
so that other teams can't come in and poach your coach,
just in case he's having a lot of success, you know,
where they've got to pay a lot to get him.
But yeah, I just I sit here today and I

(22:25):
think about this situation with Penn State. You almost cross
over oddly into the realm of where you begin to
feel like you can't afford not to make a move,
and that's a bad place to be as a fan base,
that's a bad place to be as a university. You're
gonna owe this guy oodles and noodles of money, but quote,

(22:48):
we can't afford not to make this move. And so
I mentioned Matt Rule. He did play at Penn State.
Here is Matt Rule speaking yesterday about the speculation of
him potentially being the next head coach at Penn State.
Matt Rule, of course coaching the Nebraska Cornhuskers. I'm gonna

(23:11):
give you the question as well because it does lead
it in probably better than I could, and you'll hear
his full statement.

Speaker 7 (23:19):
Obviously, your alma maters fired as coach Sunday, and.

Speaker 8 (23:23):
So your name logically.

Speaker 9 (23:24):
Becomes an a candidate for that whole What would you like.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
To say about not only coach Franklin, but the opening
there and your relationship to the ad there.

Speaker 7 (23:33):
Yeah, well, I love Penn State, met my wife there.
It's Milma Mater fan since I was born. I was
born I think probably at a Penn State shirt where
I was born. I love pat Craft and really sad,
really sad to see coach Franklin go. You know when

(23:53):
you think about what he did for Milema Mater, you
know that program was in peril, right, I mean though
the players, if people remember like the historic sanctions, you
could transfer out, you could do whatever you want. Bill
O'Brien comes in and stabilizes it for two years. James takes
over a program in disarray and gives stability excellence, and

(24:18):
to see you know, see videos of people like yelling
at his kids, And I just don't understand why in
our country, like well now, like coaches are villains, Like
you know how hard I worked in Carolina and the
things that were said to me here.

Speaker 9 (24:28):
You know how hard I work here, some of the
things that are said, you know.

Speaker 7 (24:30):
Our coaches work here. Howard sat worked last year. So
I'm just really sad about that part of it. And
people say, well, you make a lot of money, make
a lot of Mike doesn't make a kids feel good
when they're when they're hearing that, you know, make a
lot of money.

Speaker 9 (24:41):
It's nice to make a lot of mind, don't get.

Speaker 7 (24:42):
Me wrong, But still people, So I really respect James, Franklin,
Troy and I are are an unbelievable relationship too, and
Troy and I are in constant, constant, constant communication about
this program and where we're headed. You know, I came
here for two reasons. I love the commun here and
wanted to live here. And I love it here, and

(25:05):
I wanted to rebuild Nebraska football. And you know, Troy
and I understand the steps that you need to take
to make us Big Ten champions and national champions.

Speaker 9 (25:13):
This this place is elite. And I want to be
a great father and I want to be a great
college football coach.

Speaker 7 (25:19):
And so you know, I'm not gonna you know, I'm
not gonna talk a lot about job openings when they come.

Speaker 9 (25:24):
This is part.

Speaker 7 (25:25):
Maybe it's been a while here, but this is what
happens when you win. I've dealt with it, you know,
We've won a temple and I dealt with it all
the time, dealt with Baylor. I'm not going to talk
about those things ever. I'm not gonna talk about my
contract here. I'm gonna talk about the team. But yeah,
I absolutely love it here and I just wanted I
want us to continue to take the steps needed for
us to turn this thing into a beast. And players

(25:46):
all across the country want to come here. We have
the best facilities, we have elite fans, and you know,
I'm just looking at the future. So but again, I
love that place. I love I love pat I love James.
Franklin said that that that came to an end, I
would him the absolute best. But I'm really happy here
and excited to get going this week on Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Now.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
The interesting part of that, right is the fact that
when you think about the history of moments and statements
like that, I love this place, I'm happy here, and
then you turn around and the person's on a plane
and the new head coach at Penn State, you just go, man, no,
there's no great waiting answer that question, Like there's nothing

(26:27):
Matt Rule could say in that moment that if he
decided to go to Penn State, which very few people
could fault him for, that this moment would not come
back to haunt him. And so I don't know what
he'll do, but you can hear that he loves being
at Nebraska. He feels like he can build it up.
But he's obviously got tremendous ties back to Penn State.

(26:53):
And I don't know if he'll be the next coach.
I know this, he'll be a guy that gets an
upgrade in is in his uh check book, you know
what he's being paid. He's definitely gonna parlay this into
much more money, There's no doubt about that. But yeah,
I think that's gonna be the one additional storyline out
of all of these changes that are coming down the

(27:14):
pipeline is the guys that get upgraded. Certainly, there are
guys that are gonna get dropped and paid handsomely while
they get dropped. But the guys that maybe don't even
move but get an upgrade. Man life of a coach
must be great. Speaking to coaches. It's a Talking Tuesday.
We'll hear from Dabos Sweeney when we get back right
here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred Lowton Swann clympses

(27:35):
Sports Talk a Tuesday at Talking Tuesday up in Tigertown.
Dabos Sweeney, obviously, with it being October Breast Cancer Awareness
Tigers for Tata's all of that that clyps Is evolved
in to try to make and raise money for cancer research.
Dablos Sweeney spent about nine minutes in his opening talking

(27:56):
about cancer treatments and the importance and significance of fundraising
and all of the different arms of his his megaphone.
I guess, in terms of what they've been able to do,
I think closing in on like fifteen million dollars at

(28:16):
the Women's Clinic and the All In Foundation and everything
is raised, I mean, it's it's tremendous, and I could
be wrong on some of those numbers, but I'm pretty
sure that's about where it is. And if it's not,
I apologize for being wrong, but I think that was right. Nonetheless,
Dabosweeney did, after addressing the important part of the conversation

(28:40):
really right, like breast cancer awareness, early treatment, prevention and
all of those things, he did talk a little bit
about SMU. Here are some of his opening thoughts on
the bus Stangs as these two teams get set to
face off after last season's thrilling game in the A
See Championship, a thirty four thirty one walk off winner.

(29:03):
For your glimpse of Tigers, here's sweety oh yes em
you earlier today in Tigertown.

Speaker 10 (29:08):
It's gonna be an awesome weekend in the valley. It's
good to get back home. We've we've been we've been
going a while, and uh, you know, we've not played
well at home and so it's uh, you know, our
big goal this week is to play well, play well
at home, and we have not done that. So we've
got to get back to you know, playing like we're

(29:29):
capable playing, you know, here in the valley.

Speaker 5 (29:31):
You know, our fans deserve that. It is unbelievable support here.

Speaker 10 (29:35):
And uh, you know, we won the Troy game, but
we didn't play well, and so you know, we we
need to continue the momentum. We've created some momentum these
last couple of games by just you know, not playing perfect,
but we've played well and that's that's really the best
thing that's come out of these last couple of weeks is.

Speaker 5 (29:52):
Just the guys seeing the results, you.

Speaker 10 (29:56):
Know, from playing well, and they've prepared well and they've
earned the right to win by doing what winning requires.
So I'm proud of that. But we got a tough challenge.
SMU was good football team. You know, I didn't know
Rhett well before he got into the league, but I
really like him. I mean he's one of the real
good guys in college football. I think he's a really

(30:18):
good coach. But you know, we got a lot in common,
spent a good amount of time with him since he's
joined this league, and just just really have a lot
of respect for him, you know, just who he is
as a person, but also as a coach.

Speaker 5 (30:30):
I mean, he's done a heck of a job at SMU.

Speaker 10 (30:33):
Obviously, we had a knockdown, drag out down to the
last play last year, and man, they got after us.
We had some big plays, They had big plays and and.

Speaker 5 (30:45):
We had a chance to put the game away. We
didn't do it.

Speaker 10 (30:48):
Uh, they battled back and we were fortunate to win
the game. But you know, huge challenge. They're a really
good football team across the board.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
That established when he kind of giving you a little
rundown on s MU. Here's what he had to say
about the Mustangs offensively. Obviously, Kevin Jennings the quarterback, just
an elite playmaker, a fun playmaker. If you saw the
highlight this past weekend, had a behind the back pass,
literally behind the back. Pretty awesome to see that in

(31:19):
football at any level. Do that in the backyard every
once in a while. Here's Dabosweeny kind of breaking down
the Mustangs offense offensively.

Speaker 5 (31:28):
I mean, this is this is this.

Speaker 10 (31:30):
Is by far the most dynamic quarterback we've played. I mean,
he is a he's a problem. He is a really
good player, and you know he's gonna make some plays.
I'd like to say, you just go and just shut
this guy down, but I have yet to see that happen.

Speaker 5 (31:45):
He's a he's a really good player.

Speaker 10 (31:47):
He makes a lot of off schedule plays. He's he
he'll let it rip from every arm angle you can imagine,
from over the top of the side arm to behind
his back.

Speaker 5 (32:01):
He even ran a shovel behind his back.

Speaker 10 (32:03):
I mean, so like he's he's a he's just a
really good player.

Speaker 6 (32:07):
Uh.

Speaker 10 (32:07):
He's got a great feel for the rush lanes and
you know when to step up and out and when
to run around. And you know he's he's made a
ton of big plays. Again that some are designed, some
some that get him out on the edge. And you
have to cover these guys until the whistle is blown.

(32:28):
I mean you have to cover forever.

Speaker 1 (32:30):
So that's dabos. When you're kind of talking about the
difficulty in dealing with the s MU offense, specifically Kevin Jennings,
his ability to keep plays alive that makes the wide
outs even better. They got really great tight ends as well,
and so that's going to be an issue. And then
he also focused on the defense and gave you a
little insight into what he's seen from SMU on tape

(32:51):
on the other side of the ball.

Speaker 5 (32:52):
So you know, they they're their two ends are really
good pass rushers.

Speaker 10 (32:56):
Uh they're they're top ten I think in in sacks
and you know, they they they win with just beating
their guy, but they will also win with, you know,
some of their pressure that they'll bring. They're not a
true a big blitz team per se, but they'll bring
a lot of pressures, some sim pressure. So you know,

(33:19):
we've got to do a good job of communicating. They
got a lot of twists and things like that. But
you know, number one and number nine are really good
players at end for them. Uh So, Uh, defensively, they're
they're very sound, they're consistent in what they do, you know,
out of their four down front. So you know, again,
a team that's coming in here undefeated in the league

(33:41):
and they got a tough loss, uh to Baylor down
to the last play, and a tough loss to TCU.
So undefeated in the league, and you know, obviously they're
trying to get back to to Charlotte, and we're we're
we're playoff football every week, you know, we're we're fighting
for our life every single week. And so it's a

(34:02):
big game for both teams and look forward to competing
against them.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
Davo Sweeney. They're saying that, you know, every week's a
playoff game for Clemson at this point, not not thinking
that Clempson is going to make a run to the
Coastotball playoff right when he says that. But the only
thing you can do at this point if you're Clemson
to salvage a season that has been substandard is to
go out and run the table. Is to go out

(34:28):
and finish with a very solid record, which is still available.
It's still out there that you could, you know, pull
this off. But it's going to start more than it
did at North Carolina or Boston College this weekend with
how you play against what is a very confident and

(34:48):
a very capable and a very well coached SMU team
that arrives in Death Valley for this weekend's matchup. All right,
eight oh three four five zero zero eighty. Hey, Gamecock fans,
don't forget keep it a lot with us here as
Jack Veltrie from Gamecoccentral dot com joins us in our
number two stay with us final segment of our one Again,

(35:11):
thank you to Jed Donahue for joining us earlier in
the program. Coming up, Jackveltregamecockcentral dot Com. And don't forget
about our friends at Alumni Hall right there on the
corner campus on College Avenue of downtown Clemson, stopping on
game day and if we're lucky, we might run into
each other checking out the incredible hat wall. Don't forget
to ask them about their Alumni Hall Rewards Pass program
and Clemson students faculty in Military received ten percent off

When breaking news happens, you'll know about it. Again, It's
Alumni Hall right there on the corner of campus on
College Avenue, just the stones throw away from historic Riggsfield
Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop. So we heard a
little bit from Dabos Sweeney, just kind of giving you

(36:19):
the ends in the outs of his thought or his
thoughts I should say, on this SMU football team. Here's
Dabos Sweeney talking about how disappointing it's been playing so
poorly at home. And again, they didn't play bad necessarily

(36:42):
against LSU, but they certainly did not play their best.
But they played bad against Troy. They played bad against
Syracuse in my opinion. Here's Dabosweeny talking about that disappointment.

Speaker 11 (36:55):
At home.

Speaker 10 (36:56):
Yeah yeah, we yeah, we stuck. I mean three out
of our last four games at home. I know, I
know last year is a different team, but you know, uh,
this team, we've not done well. I mean, you know,
got to give a good team. LSU's good team. I mean,
you know it's not like they steam, but we had
a chance to win the game and didn't make some
of the plays that were there.

Speaker 5 (37:15):
We didn't play well offensively mostly in that game.

Speaker 10 (37:18):
And then Syracuse game, we we just didn't even start
playing defense to the third quarter. Uh so again give
them credit. But yeah, we we we we really didn't
play well in any game, uh until North Carolina. You know, collectively,
as we've played, we've had a lot, We've had some
players play well every week. You know, it's it's just

(37:40):
been like tag y'ar ed. Uh So we just haven't
played well as a team. And so but they've had
two good games and you know, they've played really well,
complimentary football. And so now we gotta we got to
you know, we've gone from chess Chapel Hill to chess
Nut Hill. Now we're back on the hill, and uh
we need to keep well.

Speaker 12 (38:01):
Where does he come up with this stuff? Where I
don't understand how does it come up with this stuff?
We went from Chapel Hill to Chestnut Hill and now
we're back up on the hill.

Speaker 1 (38:12):
I don't understand how he must just wake up in
the middle of the night man and write this stuff down.
I ask him about that, you know one time, about
where is he too is taken? That mind of Dabosweeny's
runs about a thousand miles an hour? I mean, is
he on the plane coming home from Chestnut Hill? Going
man we're just playing Chapel Hill. Now we're going back

(38:32):
to the Hill. I'm gonna use that. I'm gonna use that.
On Tuesday, here's Daboswoene address HI we or not. He
feels like playing at home puts extra pressure on the players. Now,
you gotta remember clips has been great at home, and
Dabosweeney emphasizes that they've been great at home during his
tenure here. He is talking about whether or not playing

(38:53):
at home he feels like puts pressure on the players.

Speaker 5 (38:57):
It ain't ever been that way.

Speaker 10 (38:58):
I mean, I think, I mean, even as bad as
we've been here in this little stretch, I think we're
probably still probably top three in the nation and home
wins in the last I don't know, twelve thirteen, fourteen
years or so.

Speaker 5 (39:11):
You know, it's been a.

Speaker 10 (39:12):
Tough place to play, but we've had Every team's different,
you know, I mean, every season is different.

Speaker 5 (39:16):
I don't I don't look at it.

Speaker 10 (39:17):
I just like some teams overachieved, some teams underachieve, you know,
I just I just go season by season, and we've
had a bunch of good seasons and mostly great seasons
at home for sure, But yeah, we got to get
back to playing well here, I don't, you know, I
just again I give LSU some credit.

Speaker 5 (39:39):
I think they're a pretty good team.

Speaker 10 (39:41):
So and then we just kind of got in a
fonk just some of our best players not playing well
and just you know, couldn't kind of comp couldn't, couldn't
like bail each other out, and you get beat. So
that's college football. I mean, you can get beat. It's
hard to win every single week, and especially when you
don't play well.

Speaker 5 (40:00):
You know, it's good again for them to be able to.

Speaker 10 (40:03):
See it these last couple of weeks, you know, collectively
as a group, and hopefully that momentum will carry over
in this game. But ain't gonna getting easier. I mean
every game, every game is we play good people. It's
a really good team, and we got to play well.
If we play well, then it shouldn't matter where we play.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
Final couple updates from Sweeney. Today, he was asked about
freshman offensive lineman Braiden Jacobs and whether or not he
feels like he's played well enough to push for the
starting left tackle spot.

Speaker 5 (40:30):
Starting well, I.

Speaker 10 (40:31):
Mean he's played one game, you know, so, I mean
I think in that game he in that moment. He
played really well. But I mean we got a ton
of confidence in Triesting and Blake for sure, but you know,
we got to get Tristan, you know, one hundred percent
and hopefully he's hopefully he's heading in that direction. But
it's just we got more confidence, certainly in Braden now

(40:53):
because he's finally taking it to game day, you know,
because there's been other times we've put him in there.

Speaker 5 (40:59):
You know, we're really need to go.

Speaker 10 (41:00):
Just try to get in play some tackle on He
just just wasn't is confident, but that certainly was big
for him. They'll all have their hands full this week
with number one and number nine two good players.

Speaker 1 (41:11):
Final thing from Dabos Sweeney today, he was asked about
Kid Clubnick's health. Of course, Kai Clubnick got rolled up
his ankle had been nursing a little bit of an
ankle injury. According to Sweeney, here's what he had to
say about Club Nick's health situation or status at this point.

Speaker 10 (41:28):
Well, he was last night, so he just was, you know,
just over with the trainers last night. But he's sore,
but he'll he'll be a little better each day and
I should be hopefully ready to.

Speaker 1 (41:38):
Go hopefully ready to go again. Sweeney does not seem
to make it. You know, it doesn't sound like this
is an overly significant injury. He noted after the game
again that Kay Clubnick could have played in that ballgame
on the road at Boston College, but they chose to
hold him out because Clemson had a fairly comfortable lead

(41:59):
and they want need to give some live reps to
Christopher Vezena. Now we can argue whether or not it
was a full boat of you know, live reps with
the way it all ended up playing out, but that's
really neither here nor there at this point. It's all
about the health of k club Nick. Coming up around
the band from game Cockcentral dot Com, Jack Veltree keep

(42:21):
it a lot right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred.

Speaker 12 (42:26):
Each time for Clipson Sports Talk with lowten Schwan.

Speaker 1 (43:06):
It is our number two. That's drive time right here
on the Show that Shakes the south Land, Clemson Sports
talt Log and the Swine hanging out with you on
a Tuesday afternoon, and of course Jackveltregamecock Central dot Com
joins the program momentarily and as always, the Show that
Shakes the south Land brought you in part by our

(43:28):
good friends over at Mets Plumbing mets plumb dot com
two two six seven one o eight. That's Mets Plumbing
two two six seven to one eight. Go check them
out today. Let them know we sent you, Jackveltrie Gamecockcentral
dot Com with us. Jack, welcome in Hope. You had
a great weekend and certainly appreciate you being a part

(43:50):
of the program today.

Speaker 8 (43:51):
My man, Yeah, I'm doing well, Man, Thanks for always
appreciate you.

Speaker 1 (43:56):
Yeah, look so South Carolina this past weekend. You know,
it's a tough environment anytime you go on the road
to LSU. I mean, nobody's denying that fact. And the
Gamecocks were in the mix the entire game, really, but
at the end of the day, you know this offensive line,
I know they fired the offensive line coach, but you're

(44:17):
just not getting a lot of time for Lenora Sellers.
What's kind of your take on what you've seen from
them up front, the changing of the guard on the
coaching staff, and maybe even the job that Lenoris needs
to do to step into the pocket and maybe not
kind of roll back and lose some of the yardists
that he's losing.

Speaker 3 (44:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (44:36):
I actually asked Shane Biemer about that today when we
spoke to him in media availability. It's something that I
think a lot of people have a question about, is
you know, there's been a lot of pressure on Lenora
Sellers just with the blocking up front, and you know
it has not been up to snop obviously. That's why
they made a change with Lonnie Teasley out and shown

(45:00):
Elliott in as the offensive line coach now, and Shane
was basically saying, look, it's hard to deny that it
does start up front with the offensive line. The blocking
has got to be better. You just look at the
blocking in like any of the games of this season.
But let's look at the LSU game. Yeah, blocking up front,
those guys are probably blocking for probably two maybe three seconds,

(45:22):
and then the LSU defenders came right after the quarterback.
And that's not our scipeek for success. Now, in fairness,
you know, Lenoris is a good athlete and he had
a few throat he got sacked a few times where
he also had a few sacks that were on intentional
groundings where he would just throw the ball out of

(45:43):
bounds and you know he wasn't in the tackle box,
you know, before the tension ground was called. So, you know,
it's a little bit of both. It's definitely more so
on the offensive line because they are the ones that
need to protect.

Speaker 3 (45:56):
Him better upfront.

Speaker 8 (45:57):
But at the end of the day, it is a
Leonoris and he's got to make some better decisions in there.
So I think having the changing of the guard, as
you said, is going to make a big difference, hopefully,
But we'll see what that looks like come Saturday.

Speaker 1 (46:12):
And so, what would you say to the people who
felt like, kind of watching this whole situation unfold, that
the writing was on the wall, so to speak, when
Sean Elliott was brought in anyway, that this was a
move that was going to be made at some point
down the line. Regardless.

Speaker 8 (46:28):
I think it's something that you I don't know if
that's the reason that he was brought again, he was
brought into coach tight ends. I think it's something that
maybe it was, I don't know what where that the
fact that he has coached offensive line before, Yeah, where
that kind of fell on the total pole of Okay,

(46:49):
why did Shane Biemer hire Sean Elliott? It's a good
question that I just don't know the answer to on
that because I'm not Shane Beemer, but I would say
that it's convenient that he has as much tight ends
before South Carolina. Obviously Georgia stands the head coach with
that background he has there, and then Apps stay as well.

(47:09):
So yeah, he has a good background of coaching the
offensive line and stuff. And look, he's got a tall
task ahead of him. I mean, all the false start
penalties in South Carolina has had, the sacks that they've
given up, the TFLs that they have allowed, I mean,
the blocking up front. Man needs to be better. And
you hope that this move can, as Shane Beemer did

(47:30):
say earlier today, hopefully a new face in there will
kind of a new style of coaching will kind of
allow for things to be better.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
Well. And if I remember correctly, when Sean Elliott left
and ended up at Georgia State, his family stayed in
the Midlands, so his return was as much about the
opportunity to get back around his family as it was
to get you know, back into coaching at South Carolina.
And now it's kind of come full circle where he'll
be working with that offensive line again. Jack Veltrigamecockcentral dot

(48:04):
Com joining the program, hanging out with us today and
we mentioned the defense I think that Oklahoma defense had,
or the offensive line. I think that Oklahoma defense had
ten sacks. I think he got adjusted to nine a
couple of weeks back. I know Brent Vinnables from his
time at Clemson. They're gonna be sending the house trying
to get after South Carolina this weekend as well. We

(48:26):
talked last week about how the schedule doesn't get any
easier and the game day gods didn't help South Carolina
out with the next team up on the schedule being
a team that really likes to bring multiple blitzes in
disguise things.

Speaker 8 (48:40):
Yeah, this is a defense that is really tough. I mean,
this might be the toughest defense South Carolina plays all year,
and they've just come off a game where LSU is
a really tenacious defense as well. The thing about this
game is you're gonna have to field Leonora Sellers. I mean, yeah,
everyone forgets. I think last year South Carolina had nine

(49:01):
sacks on the on defense against Oklahoma in that you know,
thirty five to nine win out Norman last season. Oklahoma
also had six sacks in that game defensively on seller
So you're gonna have to protect the front. The positive
I could say about the trend that in South Carolin's
heading four here is that they've run the football a

(49:22):
lot better you had h I think that's up to
three hundred and seventy one yards in your last two
games running the football with obviously take the sacks out
against the LSU and you rush for nearly two hundred
fifty yards in the ground. I mean that is really
good stuff. So that's a positive. And you did it

(49:43):
against the defense that didn't allow a ton of rushing
yards before that. So can South Carolina do up this weekend?
You're gonna have to You're gonna have to run the football,
and you're gonna have to protect lenors up front. You're
able to do those things and kind of limit the penalties. Man,
I think you're in a good spot because there has
been good with this offense, but again, there's a lot

(50:04):
of issues that need to be corrected.

Speaker 6 (50:06):
Well.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
And you go back to last season's game at Oklahoma
or I mean South Carolina jumped on the Sooners in
a hurry. I think what it was a fumble return,
a pick six, I can't remember. There was another kind
of weird play that. You know, obviously you make your
breaks in this sport. I don't want to say it
went Carolina's way. They made their breaks. They played that
Beamer ball that that Shane Beemer really loves. It feels

(50:31):
like watching this offense and we know what they've done
in the punt return game already this season. I mean,
it really does feel like this team's got to generate
something on the defensive side of the ball as well.

Speaker 8 (50:42):
Yeah. I mean, look, you you can't necessarily rely on
your defense to score a touchdown every single week. But
one thing you can potentially and hopefully rely on is
you're getting a good performance from them every single week. Now.
I think they played very well against LSU. All things consis.
I know South Carolina lost that game, but I don't

(51:03):
think the defense. You can't belave the defense for that game.
I mean, if you had three turnovers in that game,
you had multiple stops in the red zone.

Speaker 1 (51:11):
The goal line stand, yeah, the goal line that played
the goal that was incredible.

Speaker 8 (51:16):
I'm telling you, man, this defense, they may not be
last year's group, but they are totally starting to remind
me of what last year was. I mean, like anytime
that defense was had their backs up against the wall.
They made plays when it mattered, and that's kind of
what I'm seeing here. Like even at the end of
the game, when you're down by seven, LSU's at the

(51:36):
one yard line and they can have a chance to
get another touchdown to really put the game away, they
only came away with a field goal right there, right,
So South Carolina is doing their part defensively. I don't
think you need to score a touchdowner U week. It
would be nice have some defensive scores like you did
last year against Oklahoma. That would help put this game
in your favorite early on. But more realistically, you just

(52:00):
got to go out there and do your part defensively.
Keep John Mattier bay follow the formula that Texas did
so well last week to beat Matier beat Oklahoma shacked
him five times, he threw three interceptions. I know he's
got the thumb injury and stuff, but the end of
the day, he was out there playing, So you got

(52:21):
to him like no other team really has this season.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
Jackveltrigamecockcentral dot Com on Twitter at Jack veltri go follow
him today again. This South Carolina team hosting Oklahoma this weekend.
So Shane Beemer. I haven't had a chance to watch
his press conference, but how would you kind of evaluate
maybe his demeanor at this point in the season or

(52:46):
you know, his attitude is a very positive guy. He
reminds me a lot of Daboshweeny. But I mean, what
would you say that hit the vibe was today around him,
especially during the Q and A.

Speaker 8 (52:57):
I think the vibe was good, it's been. It was
better than it had been in recent weeks.

Speaker 6 (53:02):
Right.

Speaker 8 (53:03):
South Carolina has been scuffling right losing three of their
last four games, and times have been tough for this
this team obviously, but you know, I think Shane remains
to be optimistic that they're not too far off from
being what they want to be now. He's mentioned a
few times that this season feels similar to last year

(53:23):
for him in at their three and three once again,
at this point in the season, where you remember last
year when they played that game against Oklahoma, they had
lost two straight games and went to Norman backs up
against the wall and they dominate and then they go
on to win five more games in a row after that.
Are we gonna see the same thing this weekend? I'm

(53:44):
not sure It's always possible I think what you really
need to see this weekend is that the offense has
a pulse that they can go out there and put
together the I don't I don't even think it needs
to be dominant, but just like, where has this been
type of performance that has been missing all season long?
Like the offensive numbers are bad, we know that, but

(54:06):
I think at some point, yeah, you have a really
good quarterback on your team, you have some solid playmakers,
You're getting the run game going a bit, and I
think if this offensive line can just hold up their
end a little bit more, hopefully it's changed with Elliott coaching,
those guys will work out for the better that the
offense gets going, and then maybe that leads to good

(54:27):
things down the road, because we know this team does
play better as the year goes on.

Speaker 1 (54:31):
Final thing with you all on South Carolina and then
we'll talk about some of the national news that's come
out over the past few days. I see people posting,
and I know fans are always quick to pull the trigger,
but you know they're so much concerned about Mike Schula,
first year offensive coordinator. You look at those offensive numbers,
last in the SEC and total yards, last in scoring,

(54:54):
second to last and rushing. What are your thoughts on
on Shula and that situation after having watched six games
or half a season of his offense.

Speaker 8 (55:08):
The offense has problems right and the fact of the
matter is Carolina is not scoring enough points offensively to win.
You know, there's too many inconsistencies right now. Now, how
much of it again goes back to the O line
and the penalties you've had. It plays a hand in it,
I think for sure. But I mean, if you're South Carolina,

(55:31):
I think you need to find a way to get
more balance on offense. You're not gonna be fifty you know,
fifty run, fifty percent pass every week. But you gotta
be able to move the football somehow, and you can't
solely just rely on your run game. It's nice to
have a good run game, but the end of the day,
I think you've got to get the passing game going
a little bit more, get it a little bit more

(55:53):
in rhythm with what you're doing in the in the
run game. So I think South Carolina has not been
great offensively. I think there's been some good play calls
at times, but there's been some ones that you kind
of scratch your head out a little bit. So I
know the fan base has been very critical of Shula
and the job he's done so far. But again, the
talent is there. It's just about going out there and

(56:14):
doing it for you know, changing things around here.

Speaker 1 (56:17):
On Twitter at Jack Veltriegamecockcentral dot com, part of the
on three network, joining us here to talk about South
Carolina will turn our teach into the sport at large. Look,
Penn State not much different than the way things have
started for Texas or Clemson or South Carolina. There're been
a lot of teams that were adder near the top

(56:37):
of college football at the beginning of the season that
have kind of found themselves in a bit of a spiral.
But the Nitney Lyons the first contender to really pull
that trigger. Obviously UCLA and some other schools that fired
their coaches by now. But man, what was your response
or reaction when you heard that news on Sunday.

Speaker 8 (56:56):
I was a little shocked. I'm not gonna lie. I
was literally just getting off my flight coming back from
LSU and I opened Twitter and I see James Franklin's
been fired, and I was kind of shocked, because, look,
Penn State has not been playing well but at the
same time, forty nine million dollar buyout. There's a lot
of money, and I did not think a team like

(57:18):
that would pull the trigger, but they did, and you know,
them pulling the trigger tells me that hopefully Penn State
has a plan right, Hopefully they know who they want
to go out there and get and they get done
pretty soon rather than later.

Speaker 5 (57:35):
Now.

Speaker 8 (57:35):
I don't know if they would hire an in like
a like a currently sitting head coach or someone that
is not currently coaching, or whatever their move might be,
but that screams to me that obviously they were ready
to move on from Franklin just because of the track
record in big games. It's just not been good and
the fact that you start to lose games to teams
that you normally beat on every beat up every year.

(57:58):
It just told me that, like, look like it was
time for.

Speaker 3 (58:01):
Them to move on.

Speaker 1 (58:03):
I think the other thing too, when you think about
like say a Billy Napier at Florida and like some
of these other coaches that are on the hot seats,
so to speak, it feels like that the dominoes are
going to start falling because we're still in this world.
I don't really care that it's college football where it's
like keeping up with the Joneses, and Florida's going to

(58:25):
look and go, hold up, if Penn State's making a move,
we certainly got to make a move. And like the Dominoes, man,
I can't imagine what maybe the next four or five
weeks of college football are going to be like if
some of these teams don't win some ballgames and that look,
that might include South Carolina. I don't want to throw
them in that mix right now, but I'm just saying,

(58:46):
like there's a lot of coaches out there that are
probably looking at what happened up in State College and
thinking to themselves, oh my goodness, am I the next
guy on the chopping block?

Speaker 8 (58:57):
Yeah? Now, I mean it definitely tells me that, like, look,
nothing should be off the table. If Penn State can
pay the forty nine million dollars buyout or be willing to,
you know, fire a coach with that larger a buyout,
why can't other teams? I think we can safely assume
Florido will be looking for a new coach soon. Maybe

(59:19):
Kentucky as well as Stoops. I mean, look, those schools
also have big buyouts with their coaches. But the end
of the day, you gotta do it's best for your program,
and if a guy who's not getting the job done,
regardless of the buyout money you can It's a lot
of money, but there are ways to make it work
right where you could fire a coach and pay that

(59:40):
buyout over time if it's in their contract like that,
or you know, hopefully you don't have to pay all
at once. But I think we definitely could see a
lot more shake up. I've honestly been surprised at how
many firings there have been and we're only now it's
the eighth week of the season. It's kind of it's
kind of crazy how many of these have happened so early.

Speaker 1 (01:00:00):
Yeah, the landscape is certainly changed. Big money now involved
in the sport, not just the coaches, the players, and
I think the donors final thing with Jack Feltri again
from gamecock Central dot com, I think this is something
that Tiger fans are talking about. I bet it's something
Gamecock fans are talking about. I mean, when you're paying
these players what some of these guys are being paid,

(01:00:22):
you expect a tremendous return on the investment. The problem
is Jack. Every weekend, half the teams in the country
lose ball games.

Speaker 3 (01:00:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:00:30):
No, that's the thing. That's the thing. Like, you know,
there is so much disappointment in this sport just because
you're not gonna win every single weekend. And I think
for I can speak mainly for South Carona fans here.
Look the it's been a disappointing start to the year,
and you could say the same thing out in Clemson.
But that's why you play the games, right, I mean,
there's still six games left for many teams to go

(01:00:53):
in the season and a lot of time to go
out there and right the ship and make the season
better than it currently them. Look at South Carolina last
year when they were three and three at this time,
and then they rattled off six straight wins, Like who
would have thought that would have happened? I certainly didn't see.

Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
I didn't either. Yeah, no, I did not either. My
man all right, follow him on Twitter, everybody at Jackveltrie,
Gamecockcentral dot com, part of the All Three network. Jackman,
have a great week. South Carolina fans, make sure you
enjoy the coverage of the Gamecocks in Oklahoma sooners on
Gamecockcentral dot com. Jack we'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 3 (01:01:29):
Man.

Speaker 8 (01:01:30):
All right, thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (01:01:31):
There you go. That's Jackveltree Gamecockcentral dot Com like the
insight man. But South Carolina is struggling. I mean, Shane
Biemer's admitted it. He said the the problem was that
we went backwards way too many times with just dumb penalties,
and that sabotage what we were getting done on the
drive when we went backwards. So those are stats that

(01:01:52):
aren't good enough and they are alarming right now. But
also see how we're improving it. Need to take it,
need to keep taking steps. I'm confident that this is
a way to help us get better. So will the
game Cocks bounce back or will Brent Minables in Oklahoma

(01:02:14):
come in and dominate this weekend and send the game
Cocks under five hundred. It's a good question. Quick break.
We'll come back with more here on a Tuesday. Stay
with us, Lawton Swa, I'm back with you. Clemson Sports
thought the show of the shakestare south Land. So today
we got a chance to hear for the first time
ever from Braden Jacobs. I mean, this dude, he is

(01:02:36):
a monster, and I love it like I love when
you can go out and find you know, skilled players
of this size just dominate. Six seven, three hundred and
fifty five pounds. Now, what's interesting and he talks about

(01:02:56):
this sum is you know, his father is In Jacobs,
who played in the NFL with the New York Giants
for nine seasons. He may not have been with the
Giants for all nine years, but he won two Super
Bowls with the Giants and is the Giants all time
leader in career rushing touchdowns. And his son is six

(01:03:21):
foot seven, six foot seven, three hundred and fifty five pounds,
and his dad was a big athletic guy, but by
his son, he looks tiny. Nonetheless, Braydon did spend some
time with the media today, very soft spoken for a

(01:03:41):
big guy. He was asked about how his confidence has
grown over the past few weekends.

Speaker 13 (01:03:52):
Yeah, I would say that's pretty much pretty accurate. I mean,
kochoony if it was like KACHWENI knows me better than me.
Sometimes after I had those strung was with the Troy game,
he was just telling me that he believes in me
and that he just believes that can be a great
player for him, and I needed to just focus on
being me.

Speaker 1 (01:04:09):
Braiden Jacobs was also asked about some of the advice
that his father, Brandon Jacobs, has given him during the process.

Speaker 6 (01:04:20):
Well, yeah, he definitely did. He was telling me.

Speaker 13 (01:04:22):
He was like, everyone has to have their first everyone
has to get thrown in the fire a week at
least once to see what it's like. And he was
just telling me that basically the same thing coach we
needed do. You can't let you can't let the game
speed you up. You had to treat it like practice.

Speaker 6 (01:04:35):
And then yeah, basically tell me to breathe. This is
the main thing.

Speaker 13 (01:04:40):
He was like, breathe, calm down, you know what you're doing.
You just have to have the technique for him for
the technique with it.

Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
That's Braiden Jacob's Clemson freshman offensive lineman. And if accidentally
call him Brandon, remember we talked about this the other day.
That's a radio thing. You don't even know you do it.
Your subconscious protects you from your missteps on the radio.
So cut me some slack if I do mess that up.
At some point, he was also asked about how much
fun he had playing in that game against Boston College.

(01:05:09):
And remember he was one of the lead blockers on
that touchdown run by Peter Woods as Clemson put their
industrial fridge package on the field over three thousand pounds
of player leading the way. Here he is talking about
that game.

Speaker 6 (01:05:26):
Yeah, the game, it was pretty fun.

Speaker 12 (01:05:29):
What was the most fun part Just actually being.

Speaker 5 (01:05:32):
Out there by himself.

Speaker 13 (01:05:33):
I mean, yeah, I would say that too. And then
just the incredible plays whirede receivers were making, tight ends
were making, just everyone was making defense. Was they played
one of the best games they've ever played, having all
their sacks, pass breakups and stuff like that. Just a
fun game to be at. It wasn't like I wasn't
like super stressed the whole time. It was just like
free and we could play how we wanted to.

Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
Brandon Jacobs was also asking about what position he wanted
to play growing up. Obviously when your dad's one of
the great running backs in the NFL. Here's what he
had to say, there was.

Speaker 6 (01:06:04):
There was a point where I wanted to play. I
want to play all the positions. I want to be like.
I was like quarterback school, running back school. My receivers cool.

Speaker 13 (01:06:11):
But I think it's because I hadn't embraced the fact
that none of it could happen without the old line.
I'll say that I wanted to play all other positions
because I felt that the Dolphins line didn't get enough gratitude.
But now coming to college, we get just as much gratitude.
Maybe maybe not from the fans and stuff like that,
but like from our coaches and other players.

Speaker 6 (01:06:28):
We could just misgratitude to everybody else.

Speaker 1 (01:06:31):
What did you does, Braid Jacobs man? What a humble guy,
What a fun guy. He also was asked about whether
he's pushed to get some carries in that heavy package
that Peter Woods scored all given the fact that his
dad was a former NFL running back.

Speaker 6 (01:06:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:06:52):
Me and coach Eney actually joked. Where joked at the
very beginning of the season that I was going to
be the one running the ball in that package. But
it turns out we have and that we actually had.
We had nine linemen on the field in that package.
Kate and Peter were the only two that weren't offensive
lineman on that package. We hadn't to score and it
was it was just an awesome It's just an awesome moment.
I'll say that it was just really fun because me

(01:07:13):
and Walker parks the two people that we both played
full back behind Kate running were lead bocking for Peter
ever since he put it in.

Speaker 6 (01:07:19):
We were just super excited.

Speaker 13 (01:07:21):
Every time he gets like a fourth and one on
the goal line, we'd be like, please, like please just from.

Speaker 1 (01:07:25):
The play, sorry so I could know, just please please
run the play. So technically, I guess that is Clemson
freshman offensive lineman slash full back Braiden Jacobs, and I
got a feeling. I mean, I don't know this for
a fact, but it got a sneaky feeling He's gonna

(01:07:49):
get a carry at some point during his career at Clemson.

Speaker 3 (01:07:52):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:07:52):
I've been giving his dad's pedigree to the NFL. He
does it this guy now at six seven, three hundred
and fifty five pounds. Can you imagine dad, dude coming
downhill with a couple of linemen blocking in front of him,
speaking of beginning as big as he is and making
his dad and NFL running backs are not small by

(01:08:13):
the way. I mean, that's the thing. Like Braiden is
so big that he dwarfs his father pretty quickly. And
let's see, his dad is a guy that is six four,
two sixty four. He makes him look tiny. Here's Braiden

(01:08:34):
talked about at the point that he was finally bigger
than his father.

Speaker 13 (01:08:38):
Oh really, I mean it's my eighth grade year. I
went from six foot to sixty four four inches that
year in school, so it's really My freshman year of
high school was the first year I was like six'
five AND i was actually tall than my dad and
like watching like LIKE i still watch some of my
dad's clips now and it was still. Crazy he was

(01:09:00):
as big as he wasn't running, back AND i, guess
LIKE i GUESS i never really ACKNOWLEDGE i was bigger
than him because he. Hit he's always he's always been
like my. DAD i got to see. HIM i gotta
really see him as like this like, huge like like athletic.
FIGURE i had to see him as someone who helps
me with life and just does what he.

Speaker 1 (01:09:19):
Does, man how great is. THAT i don't see him
as this huge athletic. FIGURE i just see him as
somebody who helps me with. Life i'll tell you, this
When Brandon jacobs here's, that here's what his. SON i
mean that that's the kind of stuff you carry with

(01:09:40):
you forever as a, father for. Sure so really cool
getting a chance to hear some of. That we'll have
it on our social channels as. Well certainly gonna slice
and dice an article up for you On Braden jacobs this.
Week all, right, well a quick. Break we'll come back
and take a look at some of the games ahead this,
weekend right after this long swamp back with you on

(01:10:00):
A tuesday. Afternoon don't forget. Tomorrow we joined as we
are Every wednesday By Chad. Morris lots of fun talking
to Coach morris and we'll chat it up with, him
find out how things went For chandler and The cavaliers

(01:10:21):
on their bye week as they get back out on
the gridiron this week as. Well clemson has got a
bye week coming up next. Week two bye. Weeks. NOW
i know you'll say we just out of bye, week
but these things are well. Timed they are well. Timed
In virginia this week will Host Washington. State that game's

(01:10:44):
on THE cw at six Thirty saturday. Night they are
five and one and three and zero in the ACC i.
Mentioned we'll look at some other, games and we certainly
will in just a, second but one of the THINGS
i do want to at least bring up at this
point when we talk about The Atlantic coast conference, standings

(01:11:07):
we can start at the bottom and work our way.
Up Boston college is oh and, Four Florida state is
oho and, Three North carolina oh and, One, Stanford, Syracuse Virginia,
TECH Nc state And Wake forest are all one and.
Two cal And louisville are one and. One clemson is
two and, Two pitt is two and, One miami is

(01:11:32):
one and oh sm us two AND. Oh, Duke virginia
And Georgia tech are all three and oh in acc.
Play so you gotta have a lot of luck to
get where you want to go at this. Point Like dabosweeney,
says every week is a. Playoff you just got to
play the best you. Can that's all you can. Do
speaking about the best you, can, hey how about this alumni.

(01:11:55):
Hall that's the best you can in terms of shopping
for Your clemson. Gear right there on the corner of
campus On College, avenue Downtown clemson for all your officially
Licensed clemson, merchandise from hats to t, shirts to tailgate
gear and more fancy magnets on your way to see
Your tigers. Play oh, Yeah Alumni, hall go check them out.

(01:12:15):
Today let them know we sent, you and don't forget
to ask them about their Alumni hall rewards. Program it's
Alumni hall Where tiger fans. Shop so other games this,
week and mind, YOU i didn't do a great. JOB
i think, yesterday because of the fallout from the situation
At Penn, state didn't do a great job of kind

(01:12:38):
of resetting and recapping the, weekend, because if we're being,
honest big news like the firing of a coach who
was just in the top five in the country a
couple of weeks, ago who was a couple of plays
away from maybe playing for the national championship this past,
season who's had the best record of A Penn state

(01:13:05):
coach Since Joe paterno by a, mile maybe even better
Than Joe. POTT i don't remember all Of Joe PA's,
records BUT i know eighty two to eighty six national.
Championships and that's the thing that differentiates coaches and their.
LONGEVITY i, mean when you hoist The golden, scepter not,

(01:13:25):
once but, twice you put yourself in a spot where
it's very difficult to justify firing, you but you continually
come up short and you will be. Fired AND i
mentioned some other coaches or some names of some coaches
earlier that are certainly getting thrown around about that. JOB i,

(01:13:47):
Mention Marcus freeman is the name At Notre dame that's
going to get thrown around for, it for. Sure but
let's talk about the games that we've got coming up this,
weekend the schedule ahead in the world of college. Football
we do have some matchups, tonight which is part of

(01:14:10):
the reason That i'm bringing this up today seven o'clock
you Got liberty Hosting New Mexico, state seven Thirty South
alabama Hosting Arkansas, state and eight O'clock Western kentucky Hosting Florida.
International Tomorrow Jacksonville state Hosts delaware and Sam houston HOST.
Utep those games are both at seven. O'clock Then, Thursday

(01:14:35):
East Carolina Scully nation seven thirty ON espn Hosting, tulsa
and Then, Friday louisville at number Two miami seven o'clock ON. Espn,
now this is one of those GAMES i know people
will say to, me, well who do we need to root?
For who you need to root? FOR i, think more

(01:14:56):
than anything in this, CIRCUMSTANCE i think you just assume
That miami is going to be the team that runs the.
Table but any team that you, face as long as
you can beat them and they already have a, loss
you're ahead of. Them so you don't Face. Miami SO
i feel like you need to root for The hurricanes
to win that game because you Need miami to lose

(01:15:19):
three games to pass them on the, chart and that's not.
Happening so you Want miami to inflict damage. Everywhere you
Want miami to be. Undefeated you want them to beat
everybody because all they do is help. You anybody you don't,
face you really want them to win to help you
out to a. Point right With virginia to a. Point

(01:15:40):
it's hard to root Against Tony la, though quite. Frankly
but That's friday, night seven o'clock ON. Espn louisville At,
Miami hurricanes favored by thirteen and a. Half Matt rule
And nebraska are At minnesota On friday at eight o'clock On.
Fox nebraska's favored by eight and a. Half you've Got
San Jose state At Utahs state at nine, o'clock and

(01:16:01):
then a late night acc affair ON Espn friday night
As cal Hosts North carolina all the way out In,
Berkeley cal ten and a half point favorites as the
Tar heels go across the. Country then at noon On,
Saturday number Seventeen vanderbilt will host number TEN. Lsu vandy

(01:16:25):
favored at home by two and a. Half let that
sink in for a. Minute vandy favored by two and a.
Half number Twelve Georgia tech is At. Duke that is
a matchup again of UNDEFEATED acc. Schools and since you Face,
duke you want The Blue devils to Beat Georgia tech

(01:16:49):
because The Yellow jackets are already ahead Of clemson in
the conference, standings and you can sort of take your
spot by Beating duke and then having lose another. Game
so no doubt you Want duke to Beat Georgia tech
at noon On. Saturday that game's ON. Espn i'll tell you,

(01:17:10):
What we'll hit a quick. Break we'll come. Back we
got a couple of more big, games top twenty five
matchups to dive, into at least to put on your
resume and think about over the next few days when
a quick break will come. Back and we'll go through
those final games as we get. Closer tomorrow's Hump. Day Already,

(01:17:30):
wednesday right around the. Bend keep it locked for more
of the show that shakes the South.

Speaker 14 (01:17:34):
Land what have you done for me? Lately it's a fair.
Question just don't lose sight of the bigger, picture don't forget.
History lucky for us At, clemson the answer to the
questions what have you done for me?

Speaker 6 (01:17:54):
Lately what have you?

Speaker 11 (01:17:56):
Done always are the. Same we win.

Speaker 1 (01:18:51):
Final segment on A, tuesday the show the shakestare South
Land Clemson sports Taut we were walking through some of the,
games the the marquee games that you might want to
watch this, weekend and there are. MANY i mean they're
look when when they are twenty five top ranked teams
and those teams are playing you, know conference, foes AND

(01:19:12):
i mean this is the time of the. Year like
number Seven Texas tech At Arizona state typically not a
GAME i would talk, about But Texas tech is number
seven In Arizona state was in The College Football playoff
a year. Ago Texas tech is favored by nine and a.
Half the game is on the, road that's On fox at.
Four that's worth tuning. Into but you've also got The

(01:19:33):
South carolina Game cocks this weekend With Brent mivinnibles rolling into.
Town that's what a twelve forty five, KICKOFF i, think
pretty early, game and that'll be on THE sec. Network
and then you've got a host of other great games
around the. Country number One Ohio state at three poin
thirty ON cbs is At wisconsin and number Three Indiana

(01:19:56):
say it with. Me number Three indiana Host Michigan state
and they are twenty seven and a half point. Favorites
that's a three thirty start On. Peacock and then you've
got a top TEN sec matchup as number Nine georgia
host number Five Old miss three thirty ON. Abc that's
a seven and a half point spread in the favor

(01:20:17):
of The Georgia. BULLDOGS a little later in the, evening
you've got another top twelve matchup As tennessee's At alabama
old time rivals facing off In tuscaloosa seven thirty ON,
abc and number Twenty Southern cows at number Thirteen Notre
dame ON nbc at seven. Thirty and, finally another top

(01:20:39):
twenty five matchup is number twenty Three utahs at number
FIFTEEN byu and then a weird one and a late
one ten Thirty saturday night out In, Stanford. California Florida
state's At, stanford The, seminoles who are zero to three
in The Atlantic Coast, conference they Are they're seventeen and

(01:21:01):
a half point favorites and have a chance to get
their first conference victory in over a. YEAR i, mean
that's probably the craziest thing about what's happened in At
Florida state or In tallahassee is how they went from
being as good as they were a couple of years

(01:21:21):
ago to.

Speaker 5 (01:21:22):
What we have.

Speaker 1 (01:21:23):
Seen and yet somehow they went from the penthouse to the,
outhouse back to the, penthouse would win Over alabama and
like everybody proclaiming them back to now in the. OUTHOUSE i,
mean it's like a ping pong, ball a ping pong
ball in an. Outhouse it's wild what's happened with that? Program,

(01:21:50):
again looking at the games in The Atlantic Coast conference
though The ones, AGAIN i think anybody that is ahead
of you you want to lose and circle a team
Like miami and SAY i don't think that they are
going to, lose so just let them do some damage
for you could Give louis for their second conference. LOSS

(01:22:16):
i think the Col North carolina games you're indifferent on
but you Beat North, carolina so you root for them
because you, gotta you, know you gotta leg up On North. Carolina,
duke you want them to Beat Georgia tech Because Georgia
tech's got a leg up on. You Boston college is
playing out the, Conference virginia's playing out of. Conference syracuse And.

(01:22:37):
PITT i, Mean syracuse already has two conference, losses so
you really want them to Beat, pitt to Give pitt
a second conference loss so that the Third syracuse loss
eliminates their tiebreaker over. You and then With stanford And Florida,

(01:22:57):
state you're talking about two teams already underneath you and conference,
ANYWAY i think more than, anything you probably Want Floria
state to. Lose you just want that thing to continue
to be a train. WRECK i, mean you really want
that to be a train. Wreck and then you gotta
go Beat you gotta go BEAT, smu and that's that's
what you, do and you move to three and two
in the, conference and then you just hope that the

(01:23:20):
crowd falls back to. You that's All clempson could. Do every,
Week like that was when you said every week's a.
Playoff you just go out play the best you can
and survive in. Advance and if you do that, enough and,
honestly if this team continues to play the way they've,

(01:23:44):
played and they were playing against some poor, COMPETITION i
don't deny it poor. Competition but we always say momentum
is a funny, thing isn't. It and we've kind of
compared K clubnick here on the program to a shooter in.
Basketball you gotta get them. Going maybe this whole team
is sort of the comparison that we should be making

(01:24:06):
to a shooter in. Basketball you gotta get them. Going
and if you can get this whole team, going, maybe
just maybe you get some sparked. Flying you're kind of,
like oh, Uh Tom hanks on the, beach not survivor, Castaway, yeah,

(01:24:27):
Castaway get a little, spark get a little. Flame maybe
you could get this thing burning into a. FIRE i
have made. Fire we'll see if The tigers have made
fire with a couple of a couple of wins at acc.
Play all, right we'll talk to you all tomorrow till.
