the dot com on, It'll gone itt that's Clemson Sports
tal dot com. And on a Friday afternoon, we're joining
Hour number one, shifting the hour on you here by
Will Van Dervoort. We'll jump into that interview with Will momentarily,
(01:27):
and don't forget to show the Shakespare south Land, brought
to you in part by our good friends over at
METS Plumbing seven three two drip, drip, drip drip. You
know the jingles seven three to two drip. That's mets Plumbing,
mets Plumbing dot com. That's the website, all right, without
further ado and without any more singing, will it be
(01:51):
Will Van Dervoort, Bamberg, Earhart, red Raider in the house. Will,
what's up, buddy? How are you?
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Hey? Love? How you doing? Man? So I'm a Fomo
raider and that meets you a former Barnba Warhorse.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
I won't say what I normally call you guys, but
that wouldn't be uh be very nice since you're having
me on your show.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Wouldn't be kosher for radio. For radio. Yeah, you know,
I think I'll be honest. You'll like this from your
side of the things. I think the Woolhorse mascot's gonna
eventually be extinct with Barnwell, Blackmill and Williston, you know,
coming together to form Barnwell County High School. I don't
know that the war Horse is gonna exist.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Oh, that's gonna be sad man. That's interesting that you
saying that, because Barnbrel County will be one high school
that will you know. And I know we're gonna talk
Clemson here, but that's interesting because you said Blackville and.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Who else would willis Ball?
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah, Wi Blackvill is another rival of Bamburgs as well
that Bamberg has played forever, and so that will end
that rivalry. So that's kind of a shame that that
would end also, so yeah, kind of man, But uh
with this mean Barber would move up to like.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Class three A or something, You'd be shocked. There's not
enough kids at Blackville and Williston to combine to push
Barnwell the three A. They would still be a two
A team to just be a large one. That's hard
to imagine.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
That is hard. That is crazy, that's crazy.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
I guess nobody's living in the low country, South Carolina anymore.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah, there's I think there. I honestly, will I think
there's less than one hundred kids in the class at
at Williston per class man. Yeah, wow, yeah, will it
will been around forever. Yeah, the Blue Devils, they were
they were something. I mean, it was always good rivalries
back then. You know that that was the thing like
(03:40):
growing up and you can probably attest to this being
a guy that grew up in that region. You know,
every town was about ten miles from the other town,
you know what I mean. Denmark was about ten miles
from Bamberg, and and and Barnwell was about ten miles
from Denmark, and black was ten miles Like it was like,
however far you could travel in a day and we're
gonna set up a new town right here, and we're
(04:01):
gonna build a railroad through.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Town through town.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, Edisto is Cordova is you know probably what seven
to nine miles from Bamberg depends on you know, where
you market right in Orangeboro County, And so that's why
they can't merge. But like you know, I know, recently,
I know a lot Edison has had a lot of
people that moved over to Bamberg school district because Bamburg's
really good, you know, really good school district, and and
(04:28):
so they moved over to District one so their kids
could learn over there because the district therein wasn't doing
very well. And so yeah, it's kind of crazy in Edistow,
I know, is one of the schools that they're talking
about may not be making it much longer. I don't know,
it's getting like Allendale. Allendale, I don't know how it's
even still existing as a school. I mean, they've lost
so much money through through the decades that you know,
(04:50):
that town just becoming a ghost town because you know,
the interstate. You know, they made all their money off
the interstate, and then they had a meal down there
when meal clothes. That was it.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
You know, it's the movie. It's the movie Cars. Like
if you if you've ever seen cars for this is
for anybody that's never been to Allen, they'll go down there.
And because I ninety five got built. I mean there
are old motor homes like that used to be the
stopping point if you were traveling from like New York
to Miami. You know, you would stop about Allendale. And
there was a place called the Lobster House when I
was a kid would go eat man. All those places
(05:24):
they're kind of still there, but they're not. It's kind
of sad.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
It's a ghost town. Yeah, it really is. It's sad.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
That whole area is sad. And you know, there's really
I don't know if there's anything they can do about it,
you know, just because the textile industry has moved across seas, right,
and so that's part of it as well. That's killed
these small towns in South Carolina.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
And so yeah, it is.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
It's it's sad because a lot of history in the
state of South Carolina is dying with these towns. So
there's sad. I hate that we got on that topic
for five minutes.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yeah, it makes people feel better now that everybody sufficiently
depressed will now lift them up with some good news.
Yesterday Clemson, of course, with another pick up on the
recruiting front, dra Quinn. He's a kid that transferred from
Greater Atlanta Christian over to a powerhouse program like Buford.
Hadn't played yet for Beauford, but looking forward to seeing
(06:19):
what he'll do with them this year. Four star defensive end. Again,
we kind of touched on Matt Luke and the job
that he's done, but I don't think there's any mistake
that while he might kind of be second fiddle in
terms of the two hires that came in at the
same time with Luke and Chris Rump, Chris Rump is
kind of making some noise in his own especially with
(06:40):
a commitment like this.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yeah. Absolutely, you look at this kid and you know,
six' four two hundred AND i think fifty pounds, already
and so this is gonna be a guy that he
can really do something with.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
It if you.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Will, like this kid's coming in almost ready, made AND
i don't, know you know how far the line he's got,
to you, know for him to get to where he
needs to be from a you, know getting ready to
play major college. Football as we all, know all that.
Changes but six four excuse, me he's two hundred twenty,
pounds the six, four two hundred twenty. Pounds but you
(07:16):
look at his body type and you can see he
can grow into that two hundred and thirty two hundred
and forty two hundred fifty pound mass that you really.
Need but fifty to sixty to be honest with, you
he's got potential, there definitely got the speed on the
outside as a guy that the four star guys you.
Mentioned you, KNOW i Think rump is. Done look when
(07:39):
you go back and look At rump's history wherever he's,
been whether it's In, Clemson texas Or, florida he's always.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Recruited, well he's a good.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Recruiter and like you, Said, tom to match him up
With Nick easton as, well who's also a really good
recruiter as we, know and what he's done in the
middle of the. Interior now you put him with the
guy Like Matt luke on the offensive, side And clemson
is really taking care of the trenches Right and people always,
ask you, know what's more important quarterbacks or the, trenches,
(08:09):
right and without the, trenches the quarterbacks and the other
guys don't. Matter so when you look at great, teams
great dynasties where they've won, championships always look at their
offensive defensive lines and how good they've been.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
And consistent they've been through the.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Years and even The clemton's championship run, there you know
in the mid two thousand, tens you, know when they
went on that, run you, know the offensive line wasn't,
great but it wasn't bad. Either you, know you Got
mitch Hyattch, Right Jackson, carmen you, GET i, mean you
know those are really those were high four or five
star guys on the offensive, line and they really had
(08:47):
a good nucleus on their offensive line with some depth as.
Well and then on the defensive, FRONT i don't even
need to tell you how good they, were you, know
With Dexter lawrence And Christian wilcos And Cleveland ferrell And
Austin bryant and we can go on and. On and
so when you look at When dabo first got the
job of who he, hired and you, know you look
at a guy Like Dan brooks right that he hired
(09:08):
to help build that defensive. Line you, know he Had
Brad scott initially in his. Position Brad scott was known
as one of the top recruiters and offensive line coaches
in the country for what he did At Florida. State
he brought those two guys in to help kind of
build that, foundation and you've Seen dabo quickly they built
that up and that's when they became that power and
(09:29):
that juggernaut that they. Were Robbie colwell came in and
continued that. Off, obviously you, Know Marion hobby was a
big part of that as. Well So dab was done
a good job of getting coaches that understand his philosophy
and are good recruiters in those key positions he he.
Did you, know you could, say, well The Thomas austin
(09:51):
experiment just didn't work. Out they were hoping it was going.
To but now when you look at what he's done
With Matt luke And Matt lucas come in and just
really solidified. It now you're Seeing clemson just become better
and better in the, trenches which is what is so
important when you're building a football. Roster it starts in the.
Trenches and right, now that's What dabo and them are
(10:11):
doing right. Now they're getting those pieces in place to
keep what they have right now, going which right, now
they got a really good offensive line coming back this,
year and they got a really good defensive line coming
back this. Year and that's two of the main reasons
Why clemson is considered a top five team in the.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Preseason right.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Now he's On twitter at Stealer. Will he writes For
The Clemson. Insider check out their work at The Clemson
insider dot. Com and part of the conversation we had
over the past few weeks kind of inspired me to
put together a top ten list Of Dabo sweeney's assistant coaching.
Hires And i've got a couple of More i've got
to put, out but you Know i'm with. YOU i
(10:49):
mean the hiring that he did With Robbie, CALBWELL i
had a Call well at number nine on the. LIST
i Had Dan brooks on the, list BUT i Have
Matt luke at number. Three AND i don't want to
tell who's you, know my number two and my number,
One BUT i, think, yeah, yeah, YEAH i THINK i
think you. Might but BUT i think at this, point
(11:13):
how quickly maybe more than. Anything Will Matt luke's been
able to really put his fingerprints On clemson's program on
the offensive. Line we talked about it last week with
the commitments that he's, gotten BUT i think it goes
deeper than. That and, UH i think there's a lot of,
technique BUT i also think there's a lot of just
(11:37):
having that experience of being a head. Coach and AND
i think also too for For Matt. LUKE i think
the fact That Dabo sweeney wants his coaches to have
a life and have a family and and all that,
stuff which CAN i think can get lost at some.
Programs oh, well, yeah absolutely.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Does and that's why he burned out At. Georgia and you,
know to be honest with, yeah because he was the
head coach At Old miss and the offensive line coach
coordinator for so long there and then he goes To
georgia AND i think there was even more demand on,
him AND i think he was just, like you know,
what this isn't WHAT i want to. Do you, KNOW
i want TO i want to see my boy play.
(12:16):
FOOTBALL i want to SEE i want to see my.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Family and so.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
He took a year or two off so he could
do those, things and then now he's got back to
the point where he felt he felt, rejuvenated AND i
think he Knew davo and he knew What clemson does
here and how important family, is so he knew this
is a place he can come and still had the
best of both. WORLDS i actually can make an Argument
lawton that he's number two the second best time For.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
David you can make that argument.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Because of his. Experience when you look at his experience,
level And i'm gonna say this without giving away who
you're number two is THAT i got a pretty good
idea who you number two. Is but when you look
at his experience level compared to WHO i think you're
gonna use at your number, two we're really kind of
amping this.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
Up, well, Well i'll say, This i'll give it. Away
it's not a big. SPOILER i got two people that
are kind of co equals at number, two if that makes.
Sense and you know who number one, is so, yes, Exactly.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
So that's What i'm. Saying SO i can move because
Of luke's, EXPERIENCE i can make an argument to put
him at number two because he brought more experience to
the table at a position group that really needed. It,
now don't get me, WRONG i think obviously the other
people that there was need there too as. Well and
(13:36):
BUT i think when you look at his experience coming
in compared to the, others that's WHERE i think Puts
luke high on this list to, me because he was
a head coach and he was a, like you, KNOW
i would you, know and then his ability to go
To georgia and do what he did In georgia and
his recruiting how how he's been one of the top
(13:58):
recruiters in the country no matter where he's. Been all
those things together just kind of put him high on my,
list and even higher than A Brad scott, obviously WHO
i think to, Me Brad scott was a very important
higher For dado to bring with him when he first
started the program to make Sure Brad scott stayed on
staff Because Brad scott brought a lot of. Continuity and
(14:19):
when you look at the Players brad's got brought, in,
Right Sammy walkins to name, one if they don't Have Brad,
scott Ontass Samuel walkin has never happened To, clemson And
Sammy walkins was a big part of Why clemson is
that where it's at, today, Right, so and he brought
a lot of other, guys two key players too that
just you know THAT i have to go through, five
(14:39):
but they're, there trust.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
ME i, Know.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Brad brad is always one of the top recruiters in the.
Country and that's Who Matt luke reminds me of Because
brad was really good at recruiting and he was a
really good position coach as. Well that didn't probably get
the credit he, deserved but Those Florida state offensive, lines.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
Go back and look at him back in the.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Eighties, yeah those floors in the early, nineties those four
state offensive lines were that one of the best in
the country year in and year.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Out And Brad scott was the reason for.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
That and so that was one of the first Moves
dabo made THAT i thought was a brilliant, move which
to make sure you Kept Brad scott in place At
clemson and that he had a home and and of
course that allowed him to have his relationship with Just
gott and we know how good that relationship.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Was so Will, vanderbort you, know go, ahead, well will
Vander wort with us here on the. Program so we'll
we'll turn our attention to the not so fun side of.
THINGS i, mean as good as you kind of vet a,
recruit as much as you think somebody is going to
be a culture, Fit occasionally you do have guys that
get dismissed from the team for whatever. Reason will give
(15:42):
us some. Insight Marquise, henderson the Former Belton honey pat
talking about small towns in the state Of South. Carolina
here's a kid who committed To clemson and was on
campus for what about six, months and now he's been
dismissed from the, team that news coming out. Yesterday it
doesn't happen, often but it does, happen regardless of how
good you feel about the pieces that you're bringing into
(16:04):
the proverbial. Puzzle what's the story there and what do
you think the next steps are For?
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Henderson, well let's say Officially clemson hasn't released anything on
why they dismissed him from the. Team WHAT i can
tell you just from And i'll try to do this
in the best, way because you know there's rumors.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
All there flying.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
AROUND i can tell you some of what's out there as.
Accurate some a lot of what's out there is not,
Okay And that's one of the things THAT i talked
about this on our message. Board it's, like you, know
be careful of what you're, hearing because some people are
taking rumors and they're putting them down in facts and
then at least a false. Perception and this remind, everybody
this is still an eighteen year old young. Man you,
(16:47):
know he hadn't even turned nineteen years. Old, Yet let's
keep that in mind that he is a kid still
and he's got a chance to be really. Good i'll
say this that there was some immaturity On henderson's, part
not surprising considering he was still a. Kid part of
that came, From i'll just be honest with, You lawton
(17:08):
was the fact that he was the big man on
campus At belton and he comes To, clemson he's not
the big man on campus, anymore and he's he's got
to adjust and he's moved to a new, position and
then he gets injured and so he misses his time and,
practice so he falls even further down the depth. Chart
so there are some things that led to all this.
HAPPENING i do know the kid, tried So i'll give you,
(17:33):
that and that you, know this is not a situation
where he's a bad kid or anything like. THAT i
don't want people to get that. Impression it's just a
fact of just some immaturity and just some you, know
decisions made on his part that hurt himself when it
came to Coach swingey and the coaching, staff and it
(17:53):
just came to be where for all parties, involved this
was the best thing to. Do it gives him a
fresh start somewhere.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Else, Well AND i think, too right, like it doesn't happen.
Often AND i think given the access that players have
just so much more than they did when you AND
i were in. SCHOOL i, MEAN i think it's still
as commendable when your program has so Few AND i
don't want to be the orange shaded you know, guy
(18:21):
But South, carolina let's be. Fair the Game. Cocks they
don't have a ton of you, know off the field
issues with their program, either like some other programs near
us over In. ATHENS i think that says something about
the coaches for. Sure Will i'll tell you, what, man
we got about a minut and a. HALF i want
to give you some time to sort of talk on.
That we'll dive into some other. Things so we're gonna
Put will on. Hold Will Van dervoard again from The Clemson,
(18:43):

our good Buddy Josh graham earlier in the. Week keep
(19:49):
it a lot right here On Fox Sports radio fourteen
hundred and of course around the world on The iHeartRadio.
App back at it on A friday afternoon the Show
The shakes of South, land we Got Will vandiwort from
The Clemson inside on the guest line with. Us, will
we were talking about the Programs clemson In South carolina
and the fact that you, know both of these two
teams and their head coaches HAVE i think had a
significant impact on the fact that there's not a lot
(20:12):
of off the field trouble around both the Game cocks And.
Tigers oh.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
Absolutely and you, know LIKE i, said this kid's issues
are not anything off the field as far as not
anything like getting in trouble or anything of that. Nature
it's just more just some immaturity and just do not
doing things you need to do that the day that
the program wants you to. Do throughout the, year you,
know there's you, know the guys are asked to go
(20:37):
to study, hall they're asked to make sure they're going
to class they're asked to make sure they're at all team.
Meetings you, Know i'm using air quotes here WHEN i say.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
That you, know they're asked.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
To do voluntary workouts right, right you, know but you
know people, say well they're. Volunteering, yeah but you don't
think that coaches aren't paying attention that if a guide
doesn't show up and everybody else is, like that doesn't
look good that he's not showing. Up it's not help
you know What i'm, Saying it doesn't help the team.
Paraderie so those things are, important and so not saying
that's what happened, Here i'm just saying these are all
(21:07):
things that go into play and people get caught up, like, oh,
well he must have got in trouble with the law
and that's why they. Said, no that doesn't. What people
don't get kicked off teams just because they get in
trouble with law or anything like, that they break the
law or anything like. That, no they're simple things that
LIKE i, said it's just. Immaturity things that happen that
are within the football program that are not bad.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Things in the grand scheme of.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Life they're just things of how a player has to
learn how to be and how to learn how to
be a college athlete student, athlete And dabo swinging his.
Program they take student athletes very. Serious why do you
Think Daho sweeney is so leading the charge on it's
still important to have the scholastic situation going, on even
in this rep sharing, day that the scholarships are still,
(21:52):
important that these kids are getting. Education and that's kind
of where we're at with. This it's just a matter
of again young men getting. Injured he's moved to a new.
Position he wasn't gonna play running. Back he was gonna
play wide receiver or defensive. Back that's where he was
gonna be. At he you, know he wasn't gonna be
a running. Back and you know he falls on the
depth chart because of. Injuries and then you're brand new
(22:15):
to school and you're trying to adjust the school and
all these things that kind of. Happened life. Happens life
gets in the, way, right AND i want people to
understand that this is a young man who's still a good.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Kid he he just needs to, reset that's all he
needs to.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Do Will van Der wort with us here on the
program from The Clemson insider all. Right, well so it
looked like we might have had a future playing in
place for The College Football. PLAYOFF i, know THE sec
and The Big ten sort of wheeled the biggest, stick
if you, will when it comes down to the decisions
that are currently being made in the world of college.
Football The Big tens kind of up in arms about.
(22:49):
It because THE sec only plays eight conference. Games if
THE sec goes to, nine we already kind of know
what that's gonna do For clemson's future. Schedule but where
where are, you you, know as we kind of sit
here Mid june now or even Late, june if you,
will on what the future of The College Football playoff
might look? Like kind of given the pushback that we've
(23:09):
seen over the past week or, so.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Well you know that's a great, question don't you. Know
this is probably the most turbulent time college football has,
had maybe since the early nineteen eighties when The College
Football Coaches association was, Formed right When georgia and a
couple of other schools were trying to make sure they
(23:32):
were getting their, rights the grant of rights correct for
the you, know their usage from, television, Right, Oh i'm
sure you remember that, Well and that's how this's all.
Started and that was really at that time it was
kind of up in the air because only like five,
times you, know five, games AND i think you had
like so many times you could be on television in
(23:53):
a number of two, years LIKE i think five games
in two years or something like. That, Right and AND
abc AND spn or whoever really MORE abc AND cbs or,
whatever whoever was broadcasting colle football those, times they were
getting the majority of the, money not the. Schools and
so the schools came in and, said, hell on a,
second this is our. Product why are you making all
(24:14):
the money off of our? Product? Right and so that's
where all this. Started so since then this is probably
where now it's kind of come to a head and
you got the rest share going. On we just talked
about where now schools are gonna have to start sharing
money with student. Athletes we GOT NI l how do
you you? Know part of this house settlement deal was
(24:36):
how do you you know govern N I? L and
especially with the third party, situation so that's what's gonna
that's a big. Deal and you already start to see
appeals coming coming in where people are gonna fire appeals to.
It so that whole appellate court thing's gonna start, happening
and then and then you've got the college football playoffs
(25:00):
in the. Future and so with this, situation you, know
so people understand is they're trying to figure out what
format they're going to use going to twenty twenty, six
and right now they're the stillmate because initially The Big
ten and THE sec wanted to go to that four
plus four plus two plus one, format and that was
all cool and everything except for the fact, that, okay
(25:23):
a couple other factors came into play where THE acc
and The big, ten excuse, me in The big, twelve
they were, like, hey hold on, second what about. Us you,
know we're not totally on board with just giving you
guys all this, power, right and that they would have
agreed to. It THE sec and The Big ten would
have had sixty eight percent of the, power which means
they then can make all the rules for, everything including the,
(25:45):
committee how the field is.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Chosen.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
Everything Jim phillips and The big twelve commissioner kind of
stepped up and, said, hey hold on, second we're all about.
This they suggested that five to eleven, one and then
THE sec kind of you know With Greg, sink he
kind of got on board with that a little, bit
and they went against what The big ten was, saying
where The big ten, says, well hold, on if we're
gonna go five to, eleven then we need to change
(26:11):
things with THE sec or make THE sec and acc
go to a nine game schedule like The Big ten
And big twelve are ower. Schedules and then so that
led to a custom other, things and then The big
ten s trying to have a marriage or play their extra,
games and now The big ten, says, nope that's off
the table because you don't want to do what we
want to. Do and so now all of a sudden
(26:31):
there's chaos and said nobody knows what they want to.
Do and here's what's a. Jeopardy it is, comical and
here's what's a. Jeopardy, well you don't. Know you got
to know By december first what the plan is for
twenty twenty. Six, so because right now they're at a
stalemate and they don't know what they want to, do
twenty twenty six makes default to the current twelve team
(26:52):
playoff system we're using right, now and so that might
be what happens when this is all said and done
that that's going to be another twelve team playoffs or
another a third year instead of just the original two
years as they. Plan so still got a lot of
time though Until december first gets. Here but right, now THE,
sec the main thing right now that needs to happen
is THE sec needs to make a decision that they're
(27:15):
gonna go to a nine game. Schedule And i'll tell
you right, now they're split in the coaches rooms where
the coaches are not for. This so you got some
COACHES i want to do. It you got some coaches that.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
Don't, no you're. Right we'll talk something about that when
we get. Back let's Put will on. Hold stay with,
Us Lawton, Swa i'm with, You Will vanderboort from The Clemson. Insider.
Will you're talking about schedules and and how tough they,
are and some coaches don't want to expand to.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
Nine you probably don't need to guess who the coaches that, don't,
Right Shane Deemer Kirby, SMART i.
Speaker 4 (27:44):
CAN'T i.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
Can't, YEAH i can't blame. THEM i can't blame. THEM
i mean you, GO i mean you. Go look At florida's.
Schedule this, season and whether you like The gators or,
not you'll go ho these. Smokes that is a tough
schedule to get. Through the other THING i will, say
AND i THINK i mentioned this to you last, week
and we'll get you out of here in just a.
Second we'll appreciate your time as, Always but you, KNOW
(28:07):
i think the other thing you have to think, about
whether you're in The Big ten and you're a coach
or a commissioner or, whatever is that you might not
always be in The big. Ten and, that to me
is where the four four two model that was suggested
would not make sense because you are possibly smacking your
own wrist down the road if you end up in
one of the other leagues as a.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
Coach very good.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Point that is something and that's SOMETHING i was talked about,
too is that how fluid things have been for the
last let's be, honest fifteen, years. Right it's just you,
know you can't say one team's gonna be there ten
years from, now like you, know and how does that
hurt the dynamic of the. Conference and so to make
a commitment where you're gonna, Say, okay THE sec is
(28:52):
gonna get four and The big ten is gonna get
four and then the big twelve and THE acc only get.
Two it's, like, okay well that doesn't seem really fair to.
Me you know, that you, know these two camperences are
going to get way more than everybody. Else and so you,
know five to eleven at least gives you the opportunity
where the five automatic qualifiers. Happened they each get there
(29:12):
on which is the four power, forward and then one
from the group of, six, right that's your, five and
then you've got eleven at large. Bids now that eleven
at large bids can come from any, conference right earn doesn't.
Matter so then there's some years like let's say twenty
sixteen for, instance where THE acc and in twenty, seventeen
in those, years THE acc could have had, three maybe
(29:34):
four teams in The College Football playoff in the current
format we're in. Now because you, know so that was
just two years. Ago look how things have changed in
ten years for THE. Acc, Right so who's to say
in ten years that THE acc won't be back up
there again and have that many teams that could qualify
possibly for a college football playoff. Berth and so that's
why it's important AND i think it was a good
(29:55):
point By Jim phillips and those guys to point this
out and, say, hey, Look And phillips came out and
said this. Lot he said when he voted for receding
the twelve team, playoff he, SAID i did it even
THOUGH i didn't want to do it because it ultimately
did hurt THE. Acc he, says it's best for the
game of college. Football and when he came out and said,
(30:16):
that one of the powerful commissioners, SAYS i did what
was best with college. Football that kind of made thanky
in them have to, say you, know we need to
be careful on our. Message we don't want everybody just
thinking we care only about THE. Sec AND i think
that's what helped get the conversation going for this five to.
Eleven and when they got in there and started talking
(30:38):
about it actually makes pretty good practical. Sense and you
put out some of the reasons why that makes.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Sense all, right final, thing will the Chanta cleers? Mature
you say it right? Now you know coach will get on.
You The chanticleers playing for The.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
Chickens chickens.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Playing for The College World series champion AGAINST, lsu possibly
a three game series that could conclude On. Monday they're
riding like a twenty six game winning. STREAK i, mean
it's a heck of a story given especially that they've
already won one national. Title BUT lsu is a. Beast
what are your thoughts about this series and who do
(31:19):
you think ultimately brings on the hardware From?
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Omaha, well that's a great. Question.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Man Coastal carolina's pitching so. Well, however they're still not
a heavy run producing. Team, now they didn't get eleven
runs the other day On, louisville SO i say that
and then that. Happens but, right for the most, part you,
know they they average five six runs a. Game they're
not they're not a big, time you, know hitting team
that they're, gonna you, know.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Just kill the.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
Baseball but they got great pitching and that's where their strength. Is, well,
unfortunately they're gonna play a team IN. Lsu AND i
say unfortunately because you, know, HEY i wouldn't mind seeing them.
Win it's instead of, there right, Sure and you, know
so unfortunate for them that they play a team LIKE,
lsu who is just as, good maybe a little bit
(32:08):
better when it comes to pitching than than The chanta
clears are so you know. It to, ME i think
it's gonna be a good. SERIES i think in the end,
though LSU's got too many, dogs AND i think ls
she's gonna end up winning this, game winning this series
two games to. ONE i think it goes. THREE i
think it goes To monday. Night BUT i THINK lsu
(32:29):
is just having more pop at the. Plate it's gonna
be the difference FOR lsu in this is BECAUSE i
think pitching, WISE lsu matches up With coachtal and maybe
be a little bit, better and so far in This ncuba,
tournament that has not been the.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
Case his work on The Clemson you can find his
work on The Clemson insider dot. Com you can follow
him On twitter At Steeler. Will He's Will Van. Dervoort.

Go That's Will Van art here on A friday, afternoon
a little extended time With WILLIE. B always good to
catch up with. Him you can follow his work again
On twitter At Steeler will and on The Clemson insider dot.
Com so The College World series we've got the. Teams
(33:20):
It's Coastal. Carolina AS i, mentioned The Chanta clears back
in the finals at The College World.
Speaker 5 (33:30):
Series everybody say it with, Me shanta, Clears shanta, clears
Not Schanta, Clear Shanta.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Clears they'll take on The Bayu bengals OF. Lsu things
get going. Tomorrow and For South carolina's current baseball head
Coach Paul, minieri you, know just a few years removed
from his, retirement he's In columbia coaching and his, Replacement Jay,
johnson in his fourth season looking for champion chip number,
(34:02):
two potentially out In Baton rouge for him as a head.
Coach so it's been a Great World. Series i've enjoyed
so many of these. Games BUT i guarantee You Teal
nation flocking Towards. OMAHA lsu fans making the track because this,
(34:22):
series And i'm. HOPEFUL i think the real question is
If coastal and we could talk a little bit about
this and just a, minute we got a break coming.
Up BUT i think the big question is If coastal
Loses game. One i'll explain WHY i feel that, way
why it's such a big if about the outcome of
(34:43):
the tournament when we get, back keep it a lot
right here On Fox Sports radio fourteen hundred and you
can listen around the world to The show That shakes
to South land on The iHeartRadio. App and keep up
with everything we've got going on over on our, Website
clemson Sports talk dot. Com stay with. It final segment
of our number one to show The shakes Of Southland
(35:04):
Clemson Sports. Talk so The College World Series final begins
tomorrow seven O'CLOCK. Espn it'll Be Coastal, carolina who is
the thirteenth seed in the tournament VERSUS, lsu who is
the sixth team in the. Tournament and you'll recall these
(35:27):
two teams both are undefeated out In. Omaha but regardless
of your circumstance upon arrival at The Championship, series it
is scheduled to be a best of, three with the
first team that wins two games winning the. Championship game
two schedule For sunday at two thirty ON, abc and
(35:48):
then the if necessary game On, Monday monday. Night so
we'll be able to talk about it here if these
two teams go one and one over the next couple of.
Days BUT i think the bigger question surrounding this game
is not so much about whether or not one or
(36:11):
the other team sweeps or anything like, That BUT i
think it's whether or Not Coastal carolina can bounce back
given a twenty six game winning streak if they Lose game.
One and some will, say, well that Argument swanne carries
(36:35):
over to if they were to lose game two as,
well even if they win game, one but kind of
given their profile and they're certainly not A. CINDERELLA i
SAW espn with an article about The Chanta clears and
their rise to becoming a college baseball. Power but in my,
head there is a part of me that, thinks how
(36:58):
will they handle not having a twenty six game losing
streak snap but having if you had to bounce back from,
That and, that to me is maybe the biggest question
of This College World Series final is If coastal is
(37:21):
not fortunate enough to win two games in a, row
how do they respond to their first loss.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
In?
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Forever? Like let me see when was their like their
last loss Was april twenty, second nearly two months. Ago
was the last Time Coastal carolina got? Beat and the
streak is the longest entering The College World Series finals
(37:52):
in the history of the, event surpassing the previous record
held By Southern calid nineteen forty. Eight this event hadn't
been around but a year at that. Point The chanticleers
have a fifty six have excuse, me have won fifty
six games this. Season that's the most individual in. Baseball
(38:15):
they are nine and two all time At. Omaha and of,
course if they were to finish by winning two games
and put up a twenty eight game winning streak to
close the season and fifty eight wins offset by just eleven,
(38:38):
losses picking up their second national title since twenty, sixteen
beating a baseball, power one of the winningest and most
successful programs in college baseball IN. Lsu to do, it
a team IN lsu that got through An arkansas team
that was the, favorite the story rights itself or how
(39:00):
good This Coastal carolina baseball team has the right to
be viewed, nationally right, like not just, locally not just
by the people over In Ora, county but. Nationally if
they were to do, this undefeated in the, postseason undefeated
(39:20):
in their, regional undefeated and their super regional undefeated In,
omaha and if they go and win two more AGAINST,
lsu and if they were to do it. Convincingly you,
know we talked here on the program the other day
THAT i think with another, championship given the relatively short
amount of time That Coastal carolina has been playing, BASEBALL i,
(39:43):
SAID i think they would be the most successful program
in the state in the history of the, state more
successful Than South. Carolina AND i know for Game cock
fans you'd be chomping at the bit to hit me
up about. That but the fact, remains when you look
at the number of years That coastal's played baseball by,
(40:08):
percentage to have two titles in that short, window it's mind,
blowing and, that in my, opinion would propel them Past
South carolina as the greatest program in this state in college. Baseball,
(40:29):
now If South carolina were to win another championship in,
baseball or If clemson DARE i, Say we're to find
a way to win, three then we can start to
shift the argument the other, way, Right but as long
As coastal is even in terms of national championships With
(40:52):
South carolina or any team in the. STATE i, mean,
honestly If clempson won two titles right, now If clempson
had two national championships And South carolina had two And
coastal had. Two based off of their entire history in
THE Ncuba, tournament in my opinion at that, Point, coastal
(41:12):
because it hadn't been around now that, long would be number.
One clemson in that, SCENARIO i think would be number
two Because clemson's got a more DECORATED Ncuba tournament history
Than South, carolina and The Game cocks would then be.
Three AND i get, It Game, COX i know you're
out there hanging out with us and peeking over the
fence and probably getting worked up about. It so you could.
Speaker 4 (41:33):
Continue to peek over the fence at the best radio
showing the.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
Naked But clemson does not have two national. Titles but
if they, DID i still Think coastal would be. FIRST
i Think clemson would then be, second And South carolina
would be. THIRD a zero three four five oh zero
zero eighty Six texa line phone. Line, again you could
be a part of the program, anytime any, place anywhere
(42:00):
on our, Website Clemson sports dot. Com, well we come
back up between an interview that we did in our
number one earlier in the week With Josh, graham host
of The drive With Josh graham right after this each
time For Clemson Sports talk With Lawton. Swanny it is
(42:55):
our number. Two That's drive time writer on the show
That shakes To South Laya Clemson sports Talt Lawton swan
hang out with you on A friday. Afternoon earlier in the,
Week Josh graham made his second appearance on the program
ever in our number. One we'll give you that interview here,
momentarily but don't forget the, Show The shakes of South,
(43:16):
land brought to you in part by our good friends
over AT Mets plumbing seven three two, drip, drip drip.
Drip you know the jingle seven three to two. Drip
THAT'S Mets, Plumbing Met's plumbing dot. Com that's the website as. Well,
okay without further, ado we'll jump into our conversation With
Josh graham from The drive With Josh graham ON wsjs
(43:40):
also on, YouTube and he's up in The North carolina
Area greensboro covering college. Sports, Josh welcome, in my, man
how are.
Speaker 4 (43:49):
You it's good to be.
Speaker 6 (43:51):
Here anytime you get a chance to talk acc and
specifically clensedon, tires you've got to take the.
Speaker 4 (43:57):
Opportunity you gotta be two feet. In you gotta be
all In, lawton we gotta.
Speaker 1 (44:02):
Be gotta be all. In we'll get to The tigers
at a. MINUTE i will, SAY i guess the stories
of their demise may have been exaggerated given what they
did a year ago and the. Expectations, now that's something
that's kind of blowing me away a little.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
Bit.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
Josh let's start, though for our audience that maybe hasn't heard.
YOU i know you've been on the show one other,
time maybe twice at the A sec kickoff over the.
Years give us some insight Into Josh graham and kind
of your path to where you are today ON wsjs
up in The greensboro area Hosting The drive With Josh.
Speaker 6 (44:33):
Graham, YEAH i grew up In North.
Speaker 4 (44:38):
CAROLINA i went To East Carolina.
Speaker 6 (44:40):
University before doing my show here in the heart of
the Acc even though the headquarters are In, charlotte the
home of.
Speaker 4 (44:47):
The A sec is always In, greensboro folks that need
to know that.
Speaker 6 (44:51):
Distinction So i'm the longest running local talk show that
The triads had sports talk show running seven years starting next,
month and we're proud of. That AND i guess The
East carolina piece is kind of important because, everybody you
know how it works when you have several teams in the,
state everybody likes to, claim you, know bias or preferences
(45:17):
when when you're talking about.
Speaker 4 (45:18):
Teams so.
Speaker 6 (45:20):
BECAUSE i went To East, CAROLINA i have an equal
amount of love AND i guess hate for Inc. State
Duke carolina wake for us and it makes for a fun.
Time so we're at it seven years and THE acc
it's a lot different today than it was seven years,
ago but still just as much as fascinating and maybe
even a little.
Speaker 4 (45:40):
More.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
So, yeah well we got that in. Common so. CONGRATULATIONS
i got the longest uninterrupted show here in the midlands
Of South, carolina and maybe if we go around the,
STATE i may have the longest uninterrupted sports talk show
in the. State BUT i don't. Know there's been some
that have been around, longer but they've had some interruptions
in their. Programming but congrats on, that.
Speaker 6 (45:59):
Sir i'm sure your show has gone just as long
as The South Carolina clemson rivalry around.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
Years, Yeah i'll do it somewhere.
Speaker 1 (46:08):
Close, Well, hey with twenty, TWENTY i now have a
longer streak Than clemson In South, carolina giving that little
hitching the gideo kah well a ridiculous. Thing, anyway all,
right let's talk a little college. Football, look the expectations
For clemson is where we'll, begin because you kind of
touched on. THAT i think the big conversations THAT i
(46:29):
have with people in and around The tigers are just
trying to kind of temper, that if you, will because
it is a little bit out of the. NORM i
Think clempson warmed up to it during their run twenty
fifteen to twenty, twenty but up until this, Season, josh
you really haven't had the off season conversations about the
team In tigertown the way you are right.
Speaker 6 (46:49):
Now, Yeah AND i Think clemson earned that benefit of
the doubt last year Where Dabo sweeney doubled down on his,
system his. Processes everybody, said, oh you needed to go
heavy into the bordal after twenty twenty, three And dabo's in.
Speaker 4 (47:08):
It And dabo had a fabulous year last. Year and
now what.
Speaker 6 (47:14):
We're seeing as we enter the revenue sharing age and
so much of college football is going to become about
acquiring talent and retaining. Talent dabo retained his, players and
he retains the top guys on his, team and guys
want to stick around even when they have opportunity.
Speaker 4 (47:32):
To potentially jump to THE.
Speaker 6 (47:34):
Nfl and thus there are a lot of familiar, faces
and it makes it very easy for the often lazy
folks in our industry to get behind a team if
they know who the players.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
Are and everybody knows who follows.
Speaker 6 (47:48):
College football and THE acc Who Cave Club nick. Is
and the kind of crazy part about.
Speaker 4 (47:53):
It honestly is when you look at it from THE nfl.
Perspective LONG i saw a mock.
Speaker 6 (47:58):
DRAFT i think it Was todd mcshah who put it
out a month right after the draft had, ended because
you got to get the pre draft or the will
too soon mocks out there after the last or the
last draft is. Completed and there were Six Clinton tigers
in the first. Round so when you talk about that
that kind of, talent does that mean.
Speaker 4 (48:17):
You're gonna have six first round picks next?
Speaker 6 (48:18):
Year, No but if you have guys who are in
that conversation more than a half about a half dozen maybe, more.
Speaker 4 (48:26):
You should be in the.
Speaker 6 (48:27):
Conversation you should be given that type of, hype not
just being the best team in THE acc but potentially
being the national title contender as.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Well He's Josh. Graham you can watch his Show The
drive With Josh graham on. YouTube just search for it
over there each and every afternoon from three until six.
O'clock and so from the outside of The upstate looking, In,
JOSH i think a lot of people nationally also kind
of laugh at some of the things in the Way
Dabo sweeney wants to run the. Program, this you, know
(48:55):
this sort of lolly pops and bubblegum mentality that he
believed can still. Exist you're somebody that's a little closer than.
Most but when you look at, IT i, mean and
even your listening, audience what are their thoughts on maybe
What Dabo sweeney feels college football should be and in
some respects what it's.
Speaker 6 (49:13):
BECOME i, Think, davo when you're in the position That
Davos sweeney's, in and you've won as much As dabo,
has you have more, license more freedom to say the
things that perhaps the less, achieved the less accomplished coach
(49:34):
coaches probably think but don't want to say out loud
out of fear of the criticism and the blowback that
might come with spouting things to.
Speaker 4 (49:44):
Have the Opinions dabo.
Speaker 6 (49:46):
Has about where college football is, AT i doubt they're incredibly.
POSITIVE i doubt he likes it as much as what
he liked about ten years ago when it comes to
amateurism and getting agents involved and all these. Things BUT
i guarantee. YOU i can't guarantee, it but it would.
BE i wouldn't be surprised if the, best if the
(50:09):
majority of college.
Speaker 4 (50:10):
Football coaches feel the Way dabo.
Speaker 6 (50:11):
Does and you, Know i'll give you a good example
Of dabo saying something.
Speaker 4 (50:16):
That perhaps the less achieved might not.
Speaker 6 (50:19):
Say he did the hour long sit down With belichick
With Rhices davis AT acc spring, meetings and he, Said,
Man i'm sitting here in a.
Speaker 4 (50:29):
Meeting AND i See Bill. BELICHICK i ask some. Questions
i'm thinking this.
Speaker 6 (50:33):
Guy is more accomplished than all of us, here and
he's sitting, here has the time for, us and asking these.
Speaker 4 (50:38):
Questions now that might sound like a.
Speaker 6 (50:40):
Small thing to, you but What dabo's saying there by
giving that type of praise to.
Speaker 4 (50:45):
To belichick is, that, hey, man this guy might be
better than all of us.
Speaker 6 (50:49):
Are and it takes a special type of, confidence a
special type of you, know feeling self feeling inside to
admit something like, that and the way that other coaches
AND i talked to OTHER acc coaches about, it but
publicly they want to gush About belichick the way That dabo.
(51:10):
Did and some of it has to be, like, well
this guy has to coach in the same league that
we have to as well as a way to kind
of stick your chest out there and try to measure.
Speaker 1 (51:18):
Up, well let's go right. THERE i, mean With belichick
coming in a chapel hill At North. Carolina obviously it's
a different area in the world of college, football we know,
that but recruiting still. Exists what is the tenor of
the fan base there as far as what the tar
heels expect in your.
Speaker 4 (51:33):
One, oh they're super excited for the.
Speaker 6 (51:40):
TEAM i, mean you talk about the hype that surrounds.
It there's just a different level of attention that's been
on this program than any other point in their. History
so there's certainly excitement that comes along with.
Speaker 4 (51:57):
That but, honestly.
Speaker 6 (51:59):
It's it's all tethered to this trust In belichick's ability to,
coach because in terms of the.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
Football, Piece.
Speaker 6 (52:10):
Lawton it's a, mystery and it's a manufactured mystery Where
Bill belichick doesn't want us to know what he. Has
he doesn't want us to. Know YOU a lot of
coaches would take a job and they feel a huge
part of the job is selling the, program selling your players,
(52:32):
publicly going on every, show doing all these.
Speaker 4 (52:34):
Things that's not Who Bill belichick.
Speaker 6 (52:36):
Is and, thus during camp during the, spring players weren't
made available for.
Speaker 4 (52:42):
Interviews neither were assistant.
Speaker 6 (52:45):
Coaches there were a couple of practice they didn't have
a spring. Game they had a couple of like practice
sessions that you could, watch and then you get out
to the practice sessions and none of the players have jersey,
numbers so hard to identify who's making who's running the.
Speaker 4 (53:01):
Ball Who they don't that's A belichick.
Speaker 6 (53:03):
Thing they don't know jersey numbers at, practices And belichick views.
Speaker 4 (53:08):
That as a way for teammates to get to know
each other.
Speaker 6 (53:12):
Better, hey remember their, faces remember the, person not don't
just use the crutch of a jersey. Number but also
some of it is to make his team a, mystery
so we don't know who is going to be playing,
quarterback whether it's true Freshman Bryce, baker a local kid
From North, carolina or if It's Max johnson coming back from,
injury or if it's the transfer comes in after the
(53:33):
spring From South alabama and G. Lopez we don't. Know
we don't know who some of the game breakers are
going to. Be we know that they spent a lot
of time adding guys in the transfer close to twenty
five thirty guys out of the transfer. Portal a lot
of focus on the offensive, line but nobody knows quite.
Speaker 4 (53:52):
What the style of play is going to.
Speaker 6 (53:53):
Be who's some of the guys who will be the
impact players will Be and a lot of that is
by design For Bill.
Speaker 1 (53:59):
Belichick three to six every Day The drive With Josh
graham ON wsjs and on. YouTube just search for it
over there as. Well josh joins us here on the
program on A wednesday, Afternoon And, josh you brought up
a point that's mind boggling to. ME i can't imagine
Being Phil steel right, now like and he's still the
(54:21):
anchor of the off season in the, MINDS i have
so many people with his, magazine but with the players moving,
around it just completely shifts every dynamic that you could
imagine from you, know team, chemistry you, know how are
these guys gonna play? Together it just blows my mind
and what that job must be like for. Him it's
it's gotta be incredibly. Difficult is it?
Speaker 6 (54:43):
Possible LIKE i, think how do you do the depth
chart if guys are switching? Rosters like just from a
practical magazine as somebody you used to turn out magazines
on a quarterly basis a few times of, YEARS i
could tell you that you you need a lot of
that stuff in months in. Advance So Phil stields certainly
(55:04):
has his work cut out for.
Speaker 1 (55:05):
Him taking a look at the four teams in the
state Of North, carolina in your, opinion is a guy
that is right there talking about it each and every.
Day who do you expect to have the best? Season it's.
Speaker 6 (55:15):
INTERESTING i think by, SCHEDULE i Think North carolina has
they're going to. Win it would surprise me if it
was below, Seven and it also would surprise me if
it Was i'd say they probably are winning seven or eight, games.
Speaker 4 (55:32):
Maybe nine on the high.
Speaker 6 (55:34):
End no way they get lower than six. Wins so
there's your range with some of the unknowns Of. Carolina,
ODDLY i think out of the TEAMS i trust the,
most given the, PERSONNEL i THINK i Trust duke the.
Most And Manny diaz followed up back to back nine
win seasons For Mike elko with a nine win.
Speaker 4 (55:55):
Season of his. Own and if you want to talk
about a fabulous addition.
Speaker 6 (56:00):
That was, made Finding Darien, mensa the quarterback From, tulane
convincing him to come.
Speaker 4 (56:06):
To, durham that's a, huge huge deal For duke having
some assurances at that.
Speaker 6 (56:12):
Position funny, enough it might be the only Time i've
ever seen. This i've, covered AS i, MENTIONED Acc sports
for the better part of a, decade and they've gone.
Speaker 4 (56:22):
To so many duke basketball, games and they have this.
Speaker 6 (56:24):
Thing where when a top duke recruit is coming, in
like A Cooper flag or, whoever if they're at the,
game the, fans the camera crazies will recognize who it
is and they'll chant at some.
Speaker 4 (56:34):
Point in the, Game Cooper, flag come sit with. Us
Cooper flag comes sit with.
Speaker 6 (56:38):
Us and then sometimes most of the time they'd come
over and watch some of the game with The cameron.
Crazies Darien mensa is the only football RECRUIT i can
ever remember that the crazies recognized and had him come
sit with them while he was on his visit out
of the portal during basketball, season and then the next
(56:59):
day committed The. Duke so The Cameron crazies did their
job And duke got their. Quarterback SO i venture to
say It's, duke even though the schedule is slightly more
difficult Than North.
Speaker 4 (57:09):
Carolina says, well.
Speaker 1 (57:10):
And then that would it kind of begged the next
question BECAUSE i think For clemson, fans the team that
most of them look at as being more of a
traditional football team in THE acc has always been kind
OF Nc state at least arrival for The. Tigers they
open against Your East Carolina Pirate Scully, nation but they
close with a stretch Against Georgia, Tech, Miami Florida, state
(57:35):
And North. Carolina And i'm not saying that they're gonna
go zero to four in those, games but it's very.
Possible and if they, do where does that Put Dave,
doran who's been In raleigh for years and certainly has
been on and off of the hot seat during his.
Speaker 4 (57:51):
Tenure, tolly you're talking about a dozen. Years that's that's
the tenure looking at For. Dave it's hard to say
when you look at the. Roster there are a lot
of pieces that you, Like like you get THE Fcj
bailey back at.
Speaker 6 (58:03):
Quarterbacks while you don't Have casey conception, on you do
Have jolly at receiver and a couple others that. Returned
you Have hollywood some others at running. Back the defense
always seems to be, good but you Know dave is
on the hot seat coach in generals on the hot.
Speaker 4 (58:23):
Seat when he's making assistant coaching.
Speaker 6 (58:26):
Changes And dave dealt with it himself as early as
twenty sixteen when he brought in some guy Named Eli
drinkwitz to be A oc and they got a win
late in that year In Chapel hill that many didn't
think they get On thanksgiving, weekend And dave even said
years later that that saved his. Job and after a
four win season in twenty, eighteen twenty nineteen rolls, around
(58:47):
OR i guess that would have been twenty.
Speaker 4 (58:48):
Nineteen the twenty twenty.
Speaker 6 (58:49):
Season he had a DIFFERENT, oc a DIFFERENT, dc and
he had maybe the best year he's had AT Nc.
Speaker 4 (58:55):
State the problem is.
Speaker 6 (58:56):
Last, year the expectations were sky, high but that was
supposed to be the year for the. Pack when you
bring a quarterback, back and you have all those weapons
and a lot of guys you who have proven things
in THE acc and you had a really good year
in twenty twenty, three but it just and it. Happened
and you Mentioned East carolina and the. Opener they lost
To East carolina in the bowl game as, Well and
(59:16):
so you were talking about a five hundred.
Speaker 4 (59:19):
Season when some were.
Speaker 6 (59:20):
Expecting this is the year that for just the second
time ever IN C state was winning double digit. Games
so it kind of does Put Dave dorn in a tough.
Spot and you have an ad don't Forget lawton that
just made a basketball coaching, change and the basketball coach
that he fired was a year removed from MAKING.
Speaker 4 (59:41):
Nc state's First final four since nineteen eighty.
Speaker 6 (59:44):
Three, right so's there's certainly some urgency this year for
The pack and as you, mentioned it's not going to
be easy with that.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
Schedule Josh graham again host Of The drive With Josh
graham three to six THE, bsjs also streaming live on.
YouTube go find him over there by searching For The
drive With Josh. Graham all, right final, thing we won't
talk About coastal And. Louisville that game's obviously underway this
afternoon this coast Of carolina in the driver's. Seat let's
talk About Gauge wood and the performance that he, had
(01:00:12):
the no, hitter that was nearly a perfect. Game, MAN
i think if you're just a fan of, sport you
lock in for. That were where was your head as
that's kind of unfolding the other?
Speaker 6 (01:00:20):
Day my head was at obviously the history of the
facts you talk about third hitter and the history of
The College World series and just the eighth or ninth
in the history of THE ncaaa. Tournament but also from
a competitive standpoint WITH lsu Playing arkansas, tonight the biggest
disadvantage you're at in coming out of the losers bracket
is pitching and pitching, options and it kind of mitigates
(01:00:47):
the advantage THAT lsu has would have in the scenario
tonight coming out of the winners bracket against ls or Against.
Arkansas when a kid, throws you don't.
Speaker 4 (01:01:00):
Need a reliever at.
Speaker 6 (01:01:01):
All, now they had to bring a couple of arms
out of the pen yesterday in order to get to this.
Stage But arkansas AND, lsu in terms of pure, talent
might be the two most talented teams that are In.
OMAHA i, think regardless of how the rest of this
game shakes, out With, Louisville toastal's in a great spot
because of all the arms they have and the advantage
(01:01:24):
they do have for all the reasons we just, outline
coming out of the winners, bracket it's gonna be a
fabulous regardless of what. Happens a fabulous championship series we,
get whether it's THE acc against THE sec Or Coastal
carolina against THE, sec and all the teams left standing
are worthy national championships if they're able to hold the.
Speaker 1 (01:01:45):
Trophy some might say it's The world against THE. Sec
He's Josh, Graham josh, buddy always appreciate, you my. Man
so there you. Go some of our time With Josh
graham from earlier in the. WEEK i hope you like
to hear an hour number two on A friday. Afternoons
we've kind of be resetting at least a singular interview
On fridays for. You all, right quick, break will we
come back THE Nba. FINALS i am stunned at WHAT
(01:02:08):
i saw last. Night let's talk about. It the show
that shakes The Southland Clemson Sports. Talk All, right last
night THE nba look. Double i'm gonna give him some.
Credit he said this series is going seven. GAMES i
didn't believe. IT i didn't believe that for one. Second
here we are THE Nba finals going seven, games and
(01:02:32):
The pacers absolutely Hammered Oklahoma city in a. GAME i
thought there was really no chance that The pacers were
going to win because first and, foremost and sometimes this
seems to, happen and thank, gone THEN i fall for.
It hook line At. SINKER i don't Think Tyrese haliburton
was as banged up as maybe it was, presented which
(01:02:55):
in a little, GAMESMANSHIP i. Think but then you add to
that and so that may you have let the thunder
kind of let their guard down just a little, bit
believing that, okay they were gonna take. Control but now
you've got yourself in the ultimate toss. UP i, mean
(01:03:15):
you have put yourself in the ultimate toss up if
you are The Oklahoma City thunder and it was an absolute.
Annihilation haliburton Found siakam for a fantastic dunk that just
rattled the, rim a posterizing dunk that Gave indiana a
(01:03:37):
twenty point. Lead and it's the FIRST Nba finals since
twenty sixteen to go To game seven and Again game
seven coming up On sunday night In Oklahoma, city and
The pacers just continue to to stay. Alive, Man they're
(01:04:01):
like a. Cockroach. Man you can't for whatever, reason you
just can't kill. Them they start at ten and fifteen this,
season and they are now one game away from the,
championship and they're just two years removed from being in the.
(01:04:24):
Lottery what are my?
Speaker 3 (01:04:26):
Chances not?
Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Good you're not good like one out of one.
Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
Hundred i'd say more like one out of a.
Speaker 4 (01:04:41):
Million so you're telling me there's a.
Speaker 1 (01:04:46):
Chance, Yeah and there's a good chance now as The
Indiana pacers, foroor say games, Seven Rick. Carlyle REMEMBER i
talked About carlyle the other day and his, experience his,
(01:05:07):
expertise the coaching job THAT i thought he had done
early in this. Series maybe that's a part of why
we are where we. Are Oklahoma. City you'll have the home,
court And indiana as the, underdog has all the reason
(01:05:33):
in the world to swing for the. Fences game sevens
this century twenty twenty Five, Pacers, thunder twenty Sixteen, Cabs,
warriors twenty Thirteen, Spurs heat twenty, Ten celtics And lakers
in two thousand and, Five pistons and The, spurs and
(01:05:57):
it's the twentieth Finals game seven of all all, time
and it will be played On sunday In Oklahoma. City.
UNBELIEVABLE i Just i'm shocked at how good The pacers
(01:06:19):
played last, Night and MAYBE i should be more shocked
at how poor The Oklahoma City thunder. Played and what
would have been a you, know you get only so
many chances in your career to solidify yourself with the
TITLE nba, champion and last, night at one, point down
(01:06:45):
by more than thirty, points The Oklahoma City, thunder a
team with fourteen losses all, season have now lost three
out of six games Against, indiana and we'll have to
win at home to BE nba. Champs and looks certainly
(01:07:09):
if you counted out The pacers LIKE i, did shame on.
You they've now tied the twenty twenty Three Miami heat
for the most underdog wins in a single. Postseason in
the last thirty five, years they've been underdogs and won
ten times this. Postseason Ten and so now we wait
(01:07:33):
a couple of, days they'll be back at. It eight
O'CLOCK abc for all the, Marbles, indiana just destroy. Them
AND i think you have to ask the question, now
if You're Oklahoma, city do you have the moxie to
(01:07:55):
turn this momentum? Back because it feels like the momentum
shifted in the favor Of indiana last. Night and not
to Mention, Tyrese haliburton's got a couple of days to get,
healthier AND i thought you looked good last. Night fourteen
points in the, game five of, twelve three of seven
from beyond the, arc five. Assists i'm not saying he
(01:08:20):
was the best player on the court by any, means but,
buddy he was a plus twenty, five a plus twenty
five and a plus. Minus And Jalen, williams who we
spent a lot of time bragging about the other, day
in his play he finished with sixteen. Points but you
(01:08:43):
know what his plus minus was in this, game minus
forty when he was on the Court Oklahoma city was minus.
Forty that is, atrocious absolutely. ATROCIOUS a zero three four
(01:09:05):
or five zero zero eighty? Six all, right quick break
when we come back here on A friday, AFTERNOON a
former guest of ours show came to an end on
THE Acc, Network Mark, packer we'll talk ABOUT accpm hanging
(01:09:26):
it up yesterday on THE Acc. Network when we get back,
again it is the Show The Shakespare South lay And
Clemson Sports talk On Fox Sports radio fourteen hundred The
midlands and of course from around the world on The iHeartRadio.
Application stay with, Us Lawton's, Wine Clemson Sports. Salt don't
forget about our friends At Alumni hall on the corner
(01:09:48):
of campus On College avenue and Downtown. Clemson go check
them Out Row you're officially Licensed Clemson, Merchandise, hats T, Shirts,
tailgate Garn, moore ask them about Their Alumni Hall awards.
Program and also remember if you're A clemson, student faculty,
member or a military, member you can save ten percent
off when you shop in store To Lovenight. Hall go
(01:10:08):
shop WHERE i. Shop shop with A tiger fans shop
It's Alumni hall or online at lovenighthul dot. Com All,
right this segment's gonna be gonna be a little strange
for me for a couple of. Reasons like WHEN i
talk about this business and my involvement in this, business
(01:10:30):
there are some names along the way that have guided,
me whether it was spending summers watching guys Like Colin
cowherd And Dan patrick watching their. SHOWS i think that's
key if you're in this. BUSINESS i, think first and
(01:10:51):
foremost fine shows you can. Watch and when that became,
AVAILABLE i watched. Them but very early ON i remember
talking To Mark packer WHEN i found OUT i was
going to be getting a radio, show because WHEN i
was In, Clemson Mark packer had a show that was
syndicated prime time Of the Pack man THE. Qcb all
(01:11:14):
these other characters and, Individuals Levin kirkland and other guys
were part of that, show and it was it was so.
INTERESTING i think it Was, Leron maybe it Was Brentson. Buckner,
Anyway Mark packer then shifted from terrestrial radio where we
are to satellite radio and was doing some shows for
(01:11:36):
what was then known As College Sports nation On SERIOUS.
Xm AND i don't remember What mark's show was originally.
Called it might have Been College Sports, today and eventually
they called It Off campus With Mark. Packer and then
THE Acc network came to exist as a television, channel and,
(01:12:05):
slowly you, know AND i think the contracts AND i
don't know enough about, it but in my opinion AND
i think one of the things we do in this
business is we have to be. Honest that's number, one
and if our. WORD i Love Mark. PACKER i love
what his show, was but in my, opinion what THE
(01:12:26):
Acc network did To Mark, packer And i'm sure financially
he'd be, like, so why didn't do anything to me
but load my pockets with? Cash BUT i felt like
it was a disservice to Pac man and what his
show was and who he. WAS i don't Think Mark
packer was made for, television AND i think that's Why
(01:12:47):
packer And durham didn't. WORK i think that's why THE
ACC pm show wasn't all that well. Received AND i get,
it twelve hundred, shows fifteen hundred, guests all of. THAT
i appreciate Everything Mark packer, did but that was never
WHAT i watched On that show was never The Mark
packer THAT i knew through the. Radio AND i texted
(01:13:11):
one of my, BUDDIES i, SAID i feel like they
clipped his wings when they Put Mark packer on THE Acc,
network AND i hate. IT i think his potential is
greater than, Honestly paul Fine, bomb but that show never,
resonated you, Know Fine Bomb show is a radio show
(01:13:33):
that's on TELEVISION accpm and And packer And durham were television.
Shows AND i Think Mark packer's a radio guy AND
i want to see him back in. Radio at some
POINT i wanted to go off and Enjoys. Tom here
(01:13:53):
was the sign off From Mark packer at THE Acc network.
Yesterday All, right we gotta put bow on.
Speaker 7 (01:14:00):
This it's been, great had a, Blast, Captain you're the.
Best you're the. Best but my time is done, here
it really. Is so with that, Said i'm gonna add.
This it was kind of like a chapter of the
book to the other STUFF i have. Here So i'm
gonna shut this thing. Down and the only WAY i
know to, celebrate And mike just said, it and that
(01:14:22):
is you know how MUCH i love the old brown,
Water right it's the. Best So i'm going to have
a cocktail And i'm going to salute all of you
guys and wish everybody the absolute. Best right, there it
Is jersy is a good what for double. Reserve i'm
getting ready to take off the headset for the last.
Time And i've got a great, wife the best kids
in the, world awesome family to, great great, FRIENDS i
(01:14:44):
got bourbon AND i got my. Dog it's time to
go happy trails. Again thank You god bless come, on
well let's.
Speaker 1 (01:14:52):
Go and that's the way it, Ended Mark packer walking
out his basement door with this Dog fuller and so
at age sixty, Two Mark packer hangs it up and
we'll see what he. Does he, SAYS i can't wait
to travel, right teach and live. Again thank you all
(01:15:14):
for your. Support AND i, HOPE i hope that some
of the you know live. Again my hope is that
means at some point he'll jump back in and do some.
RADIO i know. This for me, personally it's great because he's.
(01:15:36):
SPECTACULAR i JUST i didn't like what THEY i felt
like in. It. Listen i'm not speaking from R i
have no, idea BUT i felt like his wings were
kind of clipped by that acc, network by that show
and the format and. Everything AND i hate it for
him that fans and people who rout you, know follow
(01:15:59):
him felt that, way AND i think more than just
me felt that. Way but maybe now he'll be able
to be a part of the. Show that was always
a problem is his show ran up against our. Show
and so now With Mark packer having a little. Downtime,
hey That wednesday spots looking pretty. Ripe maybe that would
(01:16:19):
be a perfect day to get Pac man on the.
Show a little prime time with the Pac man right
here On Clemson Sports. Talk you know he likes his
Little Southern fried. Football maybe we can talk it up with.
Him but, yeah congratulations To Mark, packer regardless of HOW
i think it felt and looked on the A sec
network versus his radio. Show, hey congrats to. Him i'm
(01:16:41):
sure he made great money and still was able to
do what you know he was born to, do which
is entertained and talking to great guests and deliver content
for fans in the region that he loves in The
Atlantic coast. Conference all, right quick, break when we come,
back we'll put a bow on the show that shakes
the South. Land it Is clemson Of Sports talk right
(01:17:03):
here On Fox Sports radio fourteen hundred and of course
around the world on The iHeartRadio. Application when we come,
back we'll put a big old bow on the week
as we press towards the back end Of. June holy,
smokes stay with.
Speaker 8 (01:17:18):
Us what have you done for me? Lately it's a fair.
Question just don't lose sight of the bigger. Picture don't forget.
History lucky for us At, clemson the answer to the
questions what have you done for me?
Speaker 1 (01:17:38):
Lately and what have you? Done always are the.
Speaker 8 (01:17:41):
Same we win.
Speaker 1 (01:18:34):
Final segment all Day friday afternoon the Show The shakes
of South. Land so yesterday we were talking About Kitlyn,
clark But jamal gave us a call kind of disagreed
with my comments On. Katelyn, jamal what's?
Speaker 9 (01:18:46):
Up man's your? Like, yes she's a great, player but
there is a player in w N. B you can
choose LIKE i, said and then ask you he was
there by who takes the same. Shots She's Steph carry
she was there, Player so got the paper For. KATE
i don't know what this narrative is About kit And
(01:19:06):
quake And. Angelus jo had The angelis is doing her own, thing,
Man Just angelius just doing her own. Award, man she
has reason with jos caton. Quake it's native that you
and all these other supposed casters are making.
Speaker 4 (01:19:19):
Up.
Speaker 9 (01:19:19):
Man they already said.
Speaker 2 (01:19:20):
That.
Speaker 9 (01:19:21):
Deans Just i'm laying at this, point.
Speaker 1 (01:19:23):
Man, jamal buddy appreciate the. Call, Yeah, so Angel, Reese
she's capitalized on a lot of, that you, know the
negative negativity that's come her, Way like she filed a
trademark for the word me, bound which people kind of
came up with because of misshots and the rebounds that she,
got and your thoughts On sabrina and. Sq, yes you
(01:19:45):
could shoot the. Ball and she hadn't been in the
league all that. Long she's not very. Old let me,
see twenty twenty, SEVEN i, THINK i mean she's only
been in the, league what six seven, years SO i mean
she's not old by any, means say she's twenty. Seven but,
YEAH i think that Just Caitlyn clarks brought attention to
(01:20:06):
everybody and or to that entire. League we'll see how
it all works. Out. Now some other, storylines appreciate the,
call by the, Way. Jamal some other storylines that just
popped off earlier, today and we could certainly dive into
it On monday when we have a little bit more.
Time The university Of wisconsin is suing The university Of
(01:20:28):
miami for tampering and getting one of The badger's players to,
transfer as The canes Took Xavier, lucas who was the
number one rate transfer, cornerback got him to go From
wisconsin To miami and so a court case. Pending as
(01:20:53):
The badgers have now filed a lawsuit Against. Miami this
is gonna be a union. Situation and again it all goes,
BACK i think to WHAT i said earlier this, week,
like if if professional sports were run the way we
(01:21:16):
currently run college, sports professional sports wouldn't have made it
to where they are. TODAY i, mean the fact of
the matter is is that you have to have, rules
you have to have, guidelines you have to have consequences and,
penalties and, uh they're.
Speaker 4 (01:21:36):
There you.
Speaker 1 (01:21:37):
Know you just can't appeal every single. Situation, well well
we're gonna we're gonna appeal to. This we're gonna appeal
that we don't we think players should be able to,
transfer we think players should be paid like at some.
Point AND i think this is the best comment on it.
All AND i have said this for a long. Time
(01:21:59):
you do not have to be a college football. Player
you don't have to be a college basketball. Player if
you don't like the, rules don't play by. Them and
that's the problem That i've Never i've never really fully
been able to grasp that if you create the entity
(01:22:27):
and these are the, rules play by, them if you
don't like the, rules go do something. Different and that's
that seems like the most, simple the simplest approach to it.
All if you don't like the way the system, works
(01:22:53):
go do something. Else be a regular college, student, Right,
LIKE i get. It Tim bray brings that point up a,
lot AND i think it's a good. One that you,
know if a regular college student can transfer and go
to another school the next, year why can't a student, Athlete,
well a student athlete can just be a regular, student
(01:23:16):
give up the the perks that come along with being
a student. Athlete and to, me that is significant in
that there is an obvious and always has been an
obvious difference between the student athlete and the, student and
(01:23:39):
there's benefits that those guys. Get and so if there's
benefits that you, get there should also be some, consequences
so to, speak so that your actions aren't equal to
those of other, students just like your experience isn't equal
to the other. Students like you choose to be a football,
player you choose to be a baste. Player you don't
(01:24:00):
have to. Be nobody's making you do. It we'll see
how this all unfolds. Again enjoy the. Weekend, hey can
we say Go? Chanticleers everybody say it with.
Speaker 5 (01:24:11):
Me shanta, Clears shanta, clears not, Chanticleers.
Speaker 1 (01:24:16):
Chanticleers let's hope they're hoisting another national championship in just
a few. Days all, right we'll be back On monday
to recap it. All until, then as, always you'll take
care now and Go. Tigers
