(00:45):
Sports Talk has come back to drive time. Hello everybody,
Long Swan back in the saddle once again. It is
the show that shakes the South. Lay and Clemson Sports
Talk for you each and every afternoon as you make
your way around the great state of South Carolina and beyond,
listening to us on incredible radio stations like Fox Sports
(01:05):
Radio fourteen hundred the Midlands, heard around the world on
the iHeart radio application downloaded today is free the website.
Put the dot cob on it, dog on it. That's
Clemson Sports Talk dot com eight three four to five
OO zero zero eighty six. Well that was unexpected. As
(01:26):
a matter of fact, Clemson Louisville game on Saturday night
went about the opposite of the way I thought it
would in terms of the final score. Louisville wins at
thirty three to twenty one. Shockwaves throughout the upstate, shockwaves
throughout Clemson Tiger Nation. Who would have thought that? Didn't
the shakeup of the three teams sitting at the top
(01:47):
of the Atlantic Coast Conference SMU, Miami and Clemson, it
will be the Tigers who faltered first. In a game
where they put up four hundred and fifty yards in
a game where they produced thirty one first down to
just nineteen for the Louisville Cardinals, two twenty eight through
the air, two twenty two on the ground, balanced attack.
(02:10):
I mean, I could go through the numbers statistically, some
of which were picked up in garbage time. I openly
admit that, and you would say to me, how did
they lose Swanie? And it wasn't close. Clemson was dominated
as much in Death Valley as they have been in
(02:31):
over a decade with this lost to Louisville on Saturday night,
and the bitter disappointment was felt throughout Clemson fandom to
the point where there are a lot of people currently
and we'll certainly talk about this on the show today,
a lot of people talking about defensive coordinator Wes Goblin.
(02:56):
I wrote about Wes Goodwin on the website Sunday afternoon.
You can read it unconventional, unheralded, unraveling, And that was
the word I used for the hire of Westcobwin. It
was an unconventional higher It's kind of an analyst, a
guy nobody knew, not a big personality and I'm not
(03:18):
saying you have to have that to be successful Collegiately,
you don't have to have personality to be successful as
a coach. There are a multitude of people out there
who fit that billing, from Bill Belichick to Nick Saban,
although Saban credit him a lot more personality on the
(03:42):
ESPN's College Game Day than you ever saw from him
as he was coaching. But Clemson falls thirty three twenty one.
They no longer control their own fate, their own destination.
As a matter of fact, making the ACC Championship game
is nearly impossibility at this point. It would take a
(04:03):
lot of work, and given the fact that SMU looked
the way they did against Pitt. We'll talk more about
that game coming up in just a little bit here
on the program. I certainly don't think Miami's losing a
game hard for me to imagine the Mustangs do either.
(04:23):
But it was a whole lot, just a whole lot
to digest from the loss. And I know a lot
of Clemson Tiger fans were scratching their heads throughout the
ballgame witnessing some of the stuff that took place. And
I know we've got a lot of people with us
(04:44):
in the chat over on TikTok today, I want to
say to those people in the chat, I will come
through and check out some of your comments after we're
done with the twenty minute segment here on the radio.
But if I do see anything that kind of come
through the feed that I think we should touch on
or fits the conversation that we're having, I'll certainly try
(05:05):
to get those on the air here today as well.
But from the second play from scrimmage, a false start
against the Tigers, which I watched several times, Dabosweeney mentioned
it in a Sunday teleconference. I didn't really see much
of anything, but when you start and you're playing behind
(05:29):
the sticks out of the gates, you know that can
lead you down the path. And that path was not
a good one for the Tigers with their loss to
the Louisville Cardinals. And look tip your cap, I said
in the Keys to the Game over on the website
Clemson sports dot com. There were three three keys to
this ball game, three every week that I give you,
(05:53):
and the Tigers didn't meet the mark. Number one was,
I laughed, doctor Tyler, show you gotta shake him. Seven
years of college Clemson couldn't shake him. No, sacks didn't
get to him, didn't put a ton of pressure on him.
Clemson wasn't the lead off the edge. Clemson wasn't disruptive upfront,
(06:16):
and because of that, they were able to pretty much
the Cardinals do whatever they wanted to offensively. Number two.
I said, I was all about the workhorse in film, MafA,
but I also wanted to see a second running back emerge.
I mentioned Jay Haynes one carry no yards, MafA. Dabo
(06:39):
Sweeny must be reading articles on the website because he
called him a workhorse. That's exactly what I called him
this week, that workhorse for Clemson. Thirty carries one p
seventy one on the ground. Two touchdowns you gotta have.
I'm not seeing you have to have more from MafA. Okay,
but you need to have more from this team on
(07:03):
the ground, even in two hundred and twenty two yards
getting forty three of those from k Clubnick. I want
to see a complimentary running back, you know. And I
turned on the South Carolina game and I'm seeing what
they're doing. I'm seeing Rocket Sanders break into the open
bield for a big you know, forty some mid yard
touchdown run. I think that's what Jay Haynes has, game
(07:23):
breaking playmaking ability, kind of like number three in our
Keys to the Game Slow Down. Isaac Brown, freshman playmaker
at running back. Here's what I said quote. If West
Goblin's defense can keep Brown between seventy five and one
hundred yards, I think that's a great sign for the Tigers.
(07:45):
If he pushes towards this is verbatim off the website.
If he pushes towards one hundred and twenty five, lookout, well,
he didn't just push towards one hundred and twenty five.
He busted through a one hundred and fifty one yards
on twenty attempts. The Cardinals averaged seven point eight yards
(08:07):
per carry, just constantly. Isaac Brown had a forty five
yard touchdown run right after Clemson's on side kick failed attempt. Loosely.
Some people would say, did look like Clemson recovered that,
(08:28):
But hey, apparently in Charlotte they didn't think so. Dab
boswhen he talked a little bit about that. But it
still doesn't matter for a multitude reasons. We can get
to Chris Brown, or excuse me, Chris Bell had a
forty seven yard carry in the game against the Tigers,
just one thing after the other, and honestly, for a
(08:51):
lot of people, situational decision making. Game management came to
the forefront as being a big problem for Clemson. So
Dabo Sweeney, with six minutes left in the game, Clemson
(09:13):
does not go for two. Instead, they kick the extra point.
The problem with that is kicking the extra point left
you down twelve, and being down twelve means you have
to score two touchdowns to win the game. Being down eleven,
(09:37):
I don't care what your silly card says, being down
eleven is better, because being down thirteen is no different
than being down twelve. And so if you go for
two and you cut it to eleven, and you get
that on side kick, you pick up twenty five yards,
(09:58):
you can attempt a law field goal. Most fans are
going to go, why are we kicking a field goal? Early?
Kick it now you're down eight, play defense, get the
ball back. I saw some people in the chat talking
about clock management issues. By the way, Tanner, I think
it was Tanner. They just followed. Appreciate the follow Tanner.
(10:21):
That's a put pal in the chat for everybody that
follows us. Thank you very much. Clock management, little things
like you know, Phil MafA, I think MafA was one
name that was mentioned somebody else. You know, late in
the game, they run out of bounds, they think the
clock's gonna stop, But the clock doesn't stop when you
(10:43):
run out of bounds anymore in college football until you're
under two minutes. So then Clemson is just mosey into
the line acting like they've got two more quarters of action,
two more quarters to play. Dude, you're running out of time.
Hurry up. And I think some of the issues from
Dabo Sweeney's little card or whatever he carries that tells
him when to go for two when not to go
(11:05):
for two, Like, I don't know that those things have
been dusted off and updated because ninety percent of the
games that Clemson has played for the past decade against
the majority of teams this course, like forty two to ten.
You know what, you're not whipping out all that often
the little card to see what we have to do
in this scenario when do we go for two? You
(11:27):
know who knew about the clock management issues? Do you
know who knew about the decisions that should be made
at the goal line? Everybody fifty and less who's played
video games their entire life. It is the one aspect
of coaching where I would put more in. I would
put more belief in William Qualkinbush, who joins the show
(11:50):
in our number two. I would put more belief in
myself and my buddies who play these video games to
manage the clock late in a real ballgame, to be
in the year of the coach and say, hey, coach, listen,
here's what we've got to do. Because they've been through
thousands and thousands of simulations of end game scenarios, playing
(12:13):
countless numbers of college football games.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Over the years.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
The coaches run through it at practice, and the problem
with that is you can't simulate. You can't simulate the
realities of what's gonna happen because you don't never know.
And then when you do it over and over and over,
the way so many of you have, you would go,
you know what, I think I could manage the end
(12:38):
of the game better. And I don't blame you for
feeling that way watching it. I don't blame you for
booing watching it. James says. The coaching staff failed the
players and the fans. The coaching staff let down this
Clemson Tiger fan base, and it was disappointed. You could
(13:01):
tell Dabo was disappointed. The other thing too, Dabo Sweeny's
tone when he was talking about the loss, and I'm
not saying it was a tone that says, hey, it's
not on me. He was certainly accepting the responsibility. But
(13:21):
whether or not you believe this next statement because of
just twenty one points being put on the board by
the Tigers that lost to me. Unlike maybe that, say
the Duke game a year ago, where you clearly put
it on the offense, that loss to Louisville was not
(13:44):
on the offense. It came down to the defense and
their inability to slow down. And again credit Jeff Brahm formations, leveraging,
you know, taking advantage of matchups. Excellent. They out coached Clemson.
(14:10):
But you you couldn't help but hear Dablosweeney after the game,
and will play some audio from Sweney coming up in just.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
A little bit.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
You couldn't help but think man Wes Goodwin's probably gonna
be in some trouble here, and I think about Brandon Streeter,
okay just for a minute, and how quickly it shifted
and Daboswheney recognized, Okay, Streeter is not the guy. It's
(14:38):
not gonna work, and so he and people go, Dablos
Sweeney won't get rid of Streeter. You know, for all
the criticism of Dabos Sweeney for the hires that he's
made and people saying, oh, he hires his buddies and
his former players, he won't get rid of Streeter. No,
(15:00):
not only did he get rid of Brandon Streeter, but
he went out and got during you know, that season,
the most sought after offensive mind in college football in
Garrett Riley. Now we could argue that it hasn't paid
dividends to the degree in which you would like it to,
(15:21):
but there have certainly been moments between that Georgia game
and this matchup against Louisville where you went, Okay, this
is what this is what I thought i'd get. But
that game came down to the defense. As Curtis, who's
hanging out with us notes again, I brought this stet
up earlier. No sacks in the game, just two tackles
for loss. And so now the ire of a lot
(15:43):
of people, and this is where it's kind of unfortunate
for Wes Goodwin that even though he's got that little
co defensive coordinator in front of his name with Mickey Kahan,
I mean, people see him on game days on the
sideline sort of playing that role of Brent Vinables, and
the belief is that this is his defense. Kind of
(16:06):
like when you had Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott. Had
things been going squirrely for the offense during those two
guys being at Clemson, who's the guy that's likely fired?
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Right?
Speaker 1 (16:20):
You would agree it would be Tony Elliott. Why because
you felt like it was his offense because he's the
guy calling the plays, and in that scenario, Jeff Scott
would have probably been elevated and taken over the play
calling duties. That wasn't how it worked out for them.
But in this code capacity, nobody really sees Mickey Kahn
as being a part of the problem. During the game day,
(16:41):
nobody sees Mickey conn being a part of the problem
when CLEMPS is not getting any you know, the sacks
enforcing the disruptions that were necessary. Conrad, You've opened yourself up.
Conrad's hanging out with a silver World TikTok. He's opened
himself up to one of my great answers to individuals.
(17:03):
Conrad says, Swanee, when was the last time clemsyd had
no sacks in a game? Saturday night? Just not too
long ago, No before that. I'd have to really think back.
I'm not sure timber Ray could certainly tell us, and
it may have been recently. I mean, sacks. Sacks aren't
(17:26):
necessarily something that you have to have in order to
win a game. Curtis says, that's the first time I've
ever heard in that name. What Mickey Kahn. He's a
co defensive coordinator, coaches safeties, was a high school coach
over at Grayson High School in Georgia. But Conrad, I'm
(17:51):
not one hundred percent sure about that question, but always
love that's one of my favorite. That's one of my favorite,
Like even before I was an old man and a dad,
that was one of my old man dad jokes. Come
out of a come out of a football game. You're
walking back to the car way before I'm in the
media covering it, I turned to the you know, strangers
in the parking lot man, when's the last time Clemson
(18:14):
beat Georgia Tech by twenty points? They'd be like, I
don't know i'd go about about ten minutes ago, to
be honest, But anyway, yeah, it was a tough night
in Death Valley Clemson fans. The Boo Birds were out
thirty three to twenty one. Hard to call it lifeless, right,
(18:42):
but it just had an icky feeling that you didn't like.
And it wasn't an implosion like you saw at Duke
a year ago. And it wasn't South Carolina coming into
the Death Valley and sneaking out of there with a
thirty one thirty victory two years ago. And it wasn't
pit kicking a late field goal to.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Win it.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
In twenty sixteen in Death Valley. This one was, unfortunately,
more like when Jameis Winston and Florida State rolled in there.
You weren't beat down like that, but it didn't feel competitive.
And I think that's what's most disappointing for Clemson Tiger fans.
If you get that late breaking long field goal that
(19:26):
beats you, you're just frustrated. But Florida State a year
ago in overtime, you're frustrated. This one. You saw it
unraveling in slow motion and it wasn't good. Wasn't good
all right, quick break We'll come back with more here
(19:46):
about Clemson reaction to Clemson and Louisville on the show
that Shakes the south Land. It's Clemson Sports. Start right here,
Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred the Midlands, of course, heard
around the world on the iHeart Radio application. Back at
on a Monday Clemson Sports Talk. Tiger Nation still licking
their wounds from the loss on Saturday thirty three to
(20:09):
twenty one, Louisville coming into Death Valley and honestly just
putting it on the Tigers like they haven't had it
put on them in the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium
since twenty thirteen when Florida State and Jameis Winston Kelvin
Benjamin came in there and just blew the doors off
(20:29):
of the Tigers. There's a lot. There's a lot again,
as we talked about in the opening segment, a whole
lot to talk about and digest and dive into again
the article Unconventional, Unheralded, unraveling that I wrote on Sunday
(20:50):
about the situation with Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin, who
you know may very well be in over his you know,
over his head. You listen to the way Dabos Sweeney
is talking right now, not glowing reviews for sure. Anyway,
(21:11):
speaking of dabos Sweeney talking after the game, he met
with the media to discuss Clemson's loss to the Cardinals,
and here's coach Wwheney's opening statement.
Speaker 4 (21:25):
Okay, well, first of all, I think you got to
congratulate Louisville coach Braum did.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
I just thought they did an awesome job.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
They played a heck of a game in every facet,
and so their kids, their kids played really hard. The
quarterback was outstanding, obviously, the running back was the difference
in the game. And we we we did not play
anywhere near our best tonight.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
And it's it's it hurts.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
It's a missed opportunity, huge missed opportunity, and we did not.
We didn't deserve to win. You know, they absolutely deserve
to win. We did not, So you got to give
them all the all the credit.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
We looked like a very poorly coached team tonight. And
that's only a simple as that. I mean, just incredibly
disappointed with our performance tonight. And I thought our fans
were awesome. There was another great environment and we we
we really, we really missed an opportunity, and you know
three things you don't get back. You don't get back time,
(22:27):
you don't get back words, you don't get back opportunity.
And this was a miss one tonight for sure.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
And so.
Speaker 4 (22:33):
It's it's just uh incredibly frustrating big plays on defense.
You know, you don't deserve to run when you can't
to win, when you can't stop the run. I mean,
this is this is that's just you know what we've
always hung our hat on.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
And we couldn't stop the run tonight.
Speaker 4 (22:52):
Really poor to that average seven point a to carry,
incredibly poor tackling, very few punts, We did not affect
the quarterback like we wanted to know sacks. Uh So again,
just you don't deserve to when when when people can
line up in average seven point eight to carry on
you And so just incredibly disappointing what I saw tonight.
(23:18):
The two block kicks were you know, those were miss
points opportunity, missed momentum opportunity and created momentum for them,
and the one you know, gave them a short field,
but still you know you got to go out there
and hold and give up a touchdown and just really
poor execution on our left side with with our with
our wing and our tighty end and uh Peter Woods
(23:40):
got hurt and that kind of you know, affected us
there a little bit. But uh, just that's that's coaching.
So you know, just it's all you can say on that.
But really really poor job. And then offensively, uh you know,
we had the penalty early, We had a miss block
early that really cost us some with with some execution
(24:03):
early and first couple of drives there.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
But you know, the one positive I'll say we didn't quit.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
It was a really weird game when you look at
the stats and you say, you got you had one
hundred and one plays and thirty one first downs and
they only had fifty nine. You know, but that that
speaks to the explosiveness that that they had. They had,
you know, too many big plays. And again but but
we we had missed plays offensively, you know, the one
big play to TJ.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
What a beautiful throw right there.
Speaker 4 (24:32):
We just you know TJ's gonna make a million of
those in his career, but you know, we missed that
one right there, and that's an opportunity.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
The ball is gonna probably be about the one and
and you.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
Got a chance to kind of retake the lead there
and and have good momentum. Uh So, you know, just
just didn't make some of the plays that we've been
making early. And then we had some miscues, a couple
of miss simmets, but mostly just you know, penalties, miss
block whatever, really costly penalty tonight.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
And again that's one of the things I mentioned earlier,
the second play from scrimmage, I don't see a false start.
And you know, we had a chance to sit down
with Dabo Sweeney Sunday night during his Sunday teleconference. Full
audio for our Clemson Sports Talp Premium subscribers is on
(25:22):
our website, and he said the same thing about that play.
And we did our rewatch of the game last night
on TikTok, and I didn't see I didn't see that
false start. And look, the whole game does not come
down to the second play from scrimmage and a air
(25:47):
quote false start, but it certainly puts you behind the
eight ball and starts you off on the wrong foot.
And for I mean, that bad start led to a
bad evening, led to a bad performance, and now certainly
(26:09):
a bad situation for Clemson. Davos Sweeney was asked further
to talk about this run defense he also talked about
during his Sunday teleconference as well, but here were his
initial thoughts after the game Saturday night.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
I saw some of those same things that that's hurt us,
and you know, so it's my job to get it better.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
Out and do it again. I want to reiterate something
I said in the opening segment, Sweeney, And look, he's
the head coach, right and the blame ultimately lies with him.
But when you when you hear that type of what's
the right word, the the the cadence, the inflection, the
(26:56):
tone of his voice. He's taken full responsibility, but it
feels like he feels like it's Wes Goodwin and Gooblin's responsibility.
And maybe I'm pointing more at Goodwin than Mickey Kahn
because they are co defensive coordinators. But it just it
(27:19):
has a vibe that, yeah, this is on me, but hey,
you guys know what the problem seems to be? Like,
that's the feeling I get listening to it. Am I wrong?
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Quick break?
Speaker 1 (27:29):
We'll come back with more on Clemson's lost to Louisville.
Right after this, Clemson's sports salt lot and swan with
you get on a Monday, thirty three to twenty one,
Clemson defeated by Louisville. They just punched in the mouth.
I mean it, there's not really a good way to
(27:50):
not really good way to slice it up. And I
talked about it a good bit in the opening segment,
and I mentioned that we're gonna talk a little bit
about the Atlantic Coast Conference race and who would have
thought that of the teams Clempson, Miami and SMU, especially
giving the competition this weekend, Miami and Duke facing off,
(28:16):
SMU and Pitt facing off, Like, who would have thought
that it would be Clemson that would bend the knee
and be the team that would say, yeah, you know what,
We'll see our way out of this three way tiebreaker scenario.
Speaking of Duke in Miami, I mean it was a
tight ball game throughout. Miami did, however, close out in
(28:40):
big fashion, winning fifty three thirty one in front of
a sparsely attended crowd. I mean, it's one of the
first things somebody said to me over the weekend, like
how poorly attended are games at hard Rock Stadium? Sixty
thousand people allegedly in attendance, About forty thousand of them
appear to be dressed up for Halloween as seats in
(29:03):
the venue. That was a noon kickoff on ABC Miami.
Was favored by nineteen and a half in that ball game,
but there was a point where Duke took a twenty
eight seventeen lead with I think about nine minutes and
change remaining in the third quarter, and it looked like
(29:24):
it looked like the Blue Devils might sneak in and
sneak out of Coral Gables. It looked like Duke head
coach Manny Diaz might go back to the U and
steal a dub. But the Hurricanes end up scoring what
thirty six points after that? Think about that? Thirty six
(29:48):
points in the final basically a quarter and a half,
and they scored a touchdown with seven sixteen left in
the third quarter, a touchdown with three toho eight left
in the third quarter, and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Won at twelve fifty six, one at seven thirty six,
(30:10):
and won at five thirty seven, putting up big points
in the second half, twenty one in the four fifteen
in the third for a fifty three thirty one victory
over the Duke Blue Devils. After the Blue Devils had
sort of taken somewhat, you know, a little bit of
(30:30):
control in that game. Up eleven points. I thought, man
Miami on their heels. Nope, they found a way. Then
you had SMU minus get this, minus r J. Maryland,
their top wide receiver, their top receiver tight end, you
(30:52):
know he's out for the season. And SMU goes up
thirty one to three on Pitt at the break, just
crushing the Panthers in Dallas. They would eventually hold on
to win forty eight twenty five after Pitt got a
(31:14):
couple of late touchdowns. But that game was forty eight
to eleven with nine to fifty six left in the game.
A lot of people thought Pitt would go in and win.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings was seventeen of twenty five for three
hundred and six yards and two touchdowns. Running Back Brashard
Smith twenty three carries, one hundred and sixty one yards
(31:35):
and two scores, just overwhelming the Pitt Panthers. The problem
that Clempson currently has in this Atlantic Coast Conference race,
outside of the upcoming game against Virginia Tech and the
matchup against Pitt, which will be huge given the defensive
issues Clemson's currently got. Even if you win out Miami
(32:04):
and SMU, both because they played and defeated Louisville, not
only have that tiebreaker over you, but both of them
would need to lose twice in the final what three
games of their regular season. Miami plays at Georgia Tech
(32:29):
this week, then they have a bye week before facing
and hosting Wake Forest and then going to Syracuse. I
don't see Miami dropping two out of those three games.
Same scenario for SMU, they would need to lose two
out of three. They're off this week, they go or
(32:51):
excuse me, they host Boston College next week and go
to Virginia the following week and then host Cal. Now,
if there's a scenario of those two that I would
present as hey, maybe a team can stumble back to
(33:13):
the pack and let you pass them. It would be
SMU versus what you see from Miami's schedule and how
good the Hurricanes are. But that game in two weeks
against Boston College, if somehow the Mustangs were to lose
that ballgame, then it could be think about this just
(33:36):
for a storyline scenario. Tony Elliott and Virginia being the
team that plays spoiler and helps Clemson get into the
ACC Championship game. But the Tigers still have to take
(33:57):
care of their business, which is gonna be tough enough
not to min the South Carolina game Cocks. We touched
on the game Cocks out of the Break or out
of the Gates. Here we will talk about them significantly
on the flip side. Plus, don't forget William Kawalkin Bush
joins the program in our number two because this South
(34:19):
Carolina Palmeadow Bowl rivalry matchup between the Tigers and the
game Cocks sure feels like it's in a much different
place than it's been in recent years. And look, I understand,
South Carolina prior to this lost to Louisville was the
last team to win in Death Valley two years ago
when Shane Beemer squad snuck out of there with a
(34:41):
thirty one thirty victory. But this season, maybe more than
any season in a decade, feels like one where where
the South Carolina game Cocks might not just beat Clemson,
might this be a Gamecock team that can come in
and do some real damage against the Tigers. We'll talk
(35:03):
about the game Cox and their victory over Texas A
and M. When we return stay with us. Final segment
of Hour one coming up, William Kwalkinbush set to join
the program. We'll talk with him about clemsons thirty three
to twenty one loss the Louisville Cardinals. Man, what a
what a gut punch that one is. And now you
got back to back road games as the Tigers go
(35:24):
to Virginia Tech and two Pit over the next couple
of weeks. They'll face the Citadel at home before a
final home matchup against South Carolina on November the thirtieth.
That game against the game Cos. You know, last week
I came in and I had to admit I said, Hey,
(35:48):
Game Cox, I was wrong. I mean I used to
I would peer at that South Carolina schedule and see
three maybe four wins. Max. Max. You can say what
you want about Shane Beemer. You know, I've constantly talked
about what a good fit I think he is for
(36:11):
that program. His similarities to Dabo Sweeney are not lost
on me. And it doesn't mean that you have to
like Shane Beemer and the Game Cocks by eighty means,
but they are a heck of a story. This year
in the world of college football. They are five and
three right now, three and three in the SEC, middle
(36:34):
of the pack, but it is hard not to say
that they should be six and two. I think everybody,
I don't care what shade your glasses are, they can
be range shaded, garnet shaded. Mister Magoo can see that
(36:57):
South Carolina should have beaten LSU and that would have
made them six and two and four and two in
the SEC, which right now in that league, four and two,
you're in the upper echelon. They probably should have beaten Alabama.
(37:20):
Should be a seven to one South Carolina team. They
play at Vanderbilt this weekend, the four fifteen start on
the SEC network, Vanderbilts number twenty four. I'm gonna say
something here that's probably gonna rattle some cages, the clumpson
Tiger fans. I think, if you're being honest with yourself
(37:41):
and you're looking at the AP polls, which will do
in the coaches polls, which will do in just a second,
it is it is outrageous that South Carolina is not ranked.
I mean, they pummeled Texas A and M forty four
to twenty zero week after pummeling Oklahoma thirty five to nine.
(38:04):
Of course, they had the bye week in the mix,
but still they didn't lose to the bye week either.
Tiger fans, I mean this game Cock team is roaring
Vanderbilt two. In fairness, I mean Vandy this past weekend.
You know, they've kind of shocked the world as well.
They're six and three, three and two in the SEC.
(38:25):
This past weekend they beat Auburn seventeen to seven. They
got a couple of matchups left this season after the
South Carolina game. They are at fourteenth rate in LSU
and home against Tennessee. So some big games remaining for
the Commodores. But for South Carolina right now, at five
and three, three and three in the SEC, I would
(38:50):
expect them to beat Vanderbilt. ESPN's matchup predictor likes him
about fifty nine point one percent of the time. The
game Cocks are three point favorites on the road, doesn't
mean they'll win. That would make them six and three.
Looking ahead further at ESPN's matchup predictor for South Carolina
(39:11):
versus Missouri. It likes Missouri in a big way, but
the matchup predictor can't get a read on this game
Cock team. It can't because they aren't often projected to
win these ballgames. Yet they've gone out and just taken
care of business weekend and week out. And it's the
(39:36):
first time in a long time where a legitimate pick
of South Carolina defeating Clemson in that final game of
the season would not be laughed at by anybody. As
a matter of fact, a lot of people will certainly
pick the South Carolina game Cocks to defeat the Tigers
(39:59):
at the end of the seas at this rate, I mean,
unless something significant changes, unless the wheels just fall off
for South Carolina, unless Lenora Sellers gets hurt. I don't
see that this this train for the game Cocks is
really going to slow down the shamee train seriously. Lenora
(40:22):
Sellers goes thirteen to twenty seven for two hundred and
forty four yards and two touchdowns, and the game Cocks
forty four to twenty victory over number ten ranked Texas
A and M rocket Standers carries the ball twenty times
for one hundred and forty four yards and two touchdowns.
Their big tight end Joshua Simon was rumbling, bumbling and
(40:43):
stumbling one hundred and thirty two yards. I think receiving
in the game had a huge touchdown reception late a
fifty seven yard or with three twenty four left or
really ice the game. At the time it was thirty
to twenty, South Carolina extended to thirty seven to twenty,
(41:04):
and then they would score again with two twenty two
left to really blow that thing wide open. But when
you look at the final stretch of games for Clemson,
you know that South Carolina game is not one you
can overlook. And I'm not saying any of you did,
because I know how much you hate losing that rivalry game.
(41:27):
I respect how much you hate losing that rivalry game.
But if you are telling yourself right now that South
Carolina doesn't stand a chance to beat Clemson, then you
think that the South Carolina team that barely survived Old
(41:47):
Dominion in Week one is the team that's still playing
in Columbia. And I hate to tell you, but it
is a different bird, literally that you're talking about with
this game Cock team. There's a completely different vibe, don't
I'm not here to tell you they're gonna go into
death ally and win. I'm not here to tell you
(42:09):
They're gonna go into death Valliy and be favored to win.
But you better buckle up your chin strap because I'll
tell you what. If Clemson plays the way they did
against Louisville this past weekend against South Carolina, you get
beaten from pillar to post like A and M did
this past weekend. Stay with us each time for Clempson
Sports Talk with Luwton Schwan. It is our number two.
(43:08):
That's drive time right there on the show The Shakes,
the Southland Clemson Sports Salon. So I'm hanging out with you.
William Quagabush's not gonna be able to make it. With
Clemson basketball getting underway, he had duties with the Clemson
women's basketball game, which was before the men's contest coming
up tonight. The women were taking on Jackson State. I
(43:33):
looked earlier they were leading by they had him doubled up.
I think of the break forty seven three. Of course,
women's basketball plays four periods instead of two halves, so
they got some some other different rules. The men's team
tips off tonight at seven o'clock against Charleston Southern, So
(43:56):
a little tiger hoop's action going on at Little John
Coliseum this afternoon slash evening a zero three four five
zero zero eighty six, and will continue our conversations off
of the heels of Clemson's disappointing thirty three twenty one
loss against Louisville on Saturday. But let's start with the
(44:21):
college football playoff polls because some people have asked, and look,
you got every right to ask the question, Hey, Swannee,
can this team make the college football Playoff? And as
I noted earlier, they're not listed in the matchup predictor,
And of the two teams that are in front of
you in the ACC, the most likely in my opinion
(44:46):
to lose two games might be SMU. They have a
forty seven percent chance of making the college football playoff.
Miami currently with a ninety three percent chance of making
the college football playoff. As a matter of fact, the
Hurricanes have the second highest ranking to make the college
football playoffs of any team in college football. Only team
(45:11):
ahead of them right now the Oregon Ducks, Mario Christobal's
former team, and of course Chrystal Ball now the head
coach at Miami. But taking a look at the rankings
real quick in both the AP and the coaches poll
will dive into both of those here for you on
a Monday. The top five all the same across the board,
(45:32):
including the fact that Oregon is dominating in terms of
first place votes. They have all sixty two first place
votes in the AP. They have fifty three of fifty
four first place votes in the Coaches Poll. The Ducks
are nine to zero, number one in both poles, Number
two Georgia, number three Ohio State, number four Miami, and
(45:54):
number five Texas. So the top five all the same
and Oregon well out in front in the mind's eye
of most people. Miami at nine to oh still behind
two seven and one teams in Georgia and Ohio State.
Look at that six through ten, it's really just a missmash,
(46:16):
I guess you'd say, of the same teams, just in
a different order. Will start in the AP where it's
Penn State six, Tennessee seven, Indiana undefeated at eight, BYU
undefeated at nine, and Notre Dame seven to one at ten.
In the Coaches Bowl, Tennessee is six, Penn State is seven,
(46:40):
so a little flip flop. Notre Dame is eight, BYU
is nine, and Indiana is ten. Back to the AP,
Alabama eleven, Boise State is twelve, SMU thirteen, LSU is fourteen.
(47:00):
Texas A and M checks in at number fifteen in
the APE pole in the coaches poll, Alabama's eleven, Old,
MISSUS twelve, LSU thirteen, Boise State fourteen, and SMU is
fifteen in the AP. Sixteenth ranked team in all the
land is old, miss seventeenth. Iowa State eighteen, is Army
(47:20):
nineteen is twenty. Excuse me. Eighteen is Army nineteen. Is
Clemson in twenty is Washington State. You know we're in
the coaches poll. Texas A and M is sixteen. Clemson
is seventeen. So the Tigers are up a couple of
spots in the coaches poll. From the AP, they are eighteenth.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
Excuse me.
Speaker 1 (47:39):
Iowa State is eighteenth, Army nineteenth at Washington State is twentieth.
Then your final five in both major polls twenty one
in the AP Colorado twenty two, Kansas State twenty three,
Pittsburgh twenty four, Vanderbilt twenty five, Louisville, and we're in
the coaches poll. Number twenty one is Kansas State, number
twenty two, Missouri twenty three, Pit twenty four Colorado and
(48:03):
twenty five is Vanderbilt, So the top five pretty much
the same. Can't Clemson get into the college football playoffs?
All I can tell you is just keep winning. I mean,
that's all you can do, is just keep winning. At
this point, you've, as Davos when he said, and I
wrote about on the website, you've given up the luxury
of controlling your own destiny. You can only control what
(48:26):
you can control. As the Tigers again lost to Louisville
this past weekend, and statistically speaking, one of the biggest
disappointments I think for pretty much everybody was just how
good Louisville was with big, chunk, explosive plays. I mean,
(48:53):
it's it's one thing to get beat and and maybe
you might say, well, you know, overall, Clemson had more
big plays. I think the Tigers actually had ten in
the ball game. The problem was Clemson's ten flirted around,
(49:14):
you know, ten fourteen yards in that rushing category, which
is ten plus, and Louisville had several twenty three plus.
They had two forty five plus and those are just massive,
explosive plays. Massive. They had six plays that gave them
(49:40):
one hundred and sixty six of their two hundred and
ten total rushing yards. I mean, when you're giving up
big chunks like that, it's hard. It's hard to win.
And defensively, I mean, you can already hear the murmurs
(50:02):
and the rumbling about Wes Goodwin. I wrote about it
on the website on Sunday. You can go check that
article out as well. There's just a lot of concern
about this group and the lack of fundamentals and tackling
and the fact that you know, it looked in some
respects like Louisville recognized, Hey, if we get these guys
(50:25):
running sideline the sideline, you know, if we just don't
attack them straight on, if we make them work towards
the sideline, we can find gaps. They're not gap sound,
they don't have the integrity necessary to hold up in
(50:46):
that kind of scheme. And I guarantee you you're gonna
see that again this weekend at Blacksburg. You'll see it
again the following weekend against pitt And I would imagine,
you know, regardless of what the Citadel tries to do
against your Tigers, that you'll see a similar game plan
(51:06):
from the South Carolina game Cocks. Now one thing I
can say, and I feel pretty comfortable saying it, is
that when Brent Venables was at Clemson and Pitt, you
might recall when they won in Death Valley and they
ran that little shovel pass. Every team remaining on the
(51:28):
schedule the rest of the way tried that shovel pass
against Clemson and got stoned every team. I can't remember
all the games in between that matchup with Pitt and
the National Championship, but if my memory serves me correctly,
South Carolina certainly tried it against the Tigers. I think
(51:52):
Ohio State tried to trigger it. I believe Alabama and
the National Championship tried to see if they could pull
something similar off against Clemson, and it just continued to fail.
And Brent Minibles had his team prepared for each and
every aspect of that shovel pass. Now, after having witnessed
(52:16):
this Clemson Tiger team this past weekend and the number
of you know, big plays that they gave up and
all of the issues that this group had you defending
that stuff from sideline to the sideline, I think it
begs the question how much improvement? What's the marked improvement
(52:39):
that we can see coming into this contest on Saturday
up that pit. You don't you know, you don't have
control of what happens in the other ballgame. So you
could win out and still not make the ACC championship game.
(52:59):
You can went out and still not make the college
football playoff. But that's what happens when you come out
and flounder around and fumble. I don't mean literally fumble,
but you know, you you play around too much, and
you find out that, hey, there's not enough time left
(53:21):
in this game for the the comeback that you had
so hoped for. There's not enough time left in the
game to turn the momentum in your favor. And so
for Climpson Tiger fans, you know a lot of people
have started to really point their ire at West Giblin
(53:47):
and the fact that you know, Dabo Sweeney's quote was
talking about and you know, not not having the fundamentals,
you know, not doing the not doing the little things.
You went from being an elite to quote, we didn't
(54:12):
play anywhere near our best tonight. We look like a
very poorly coached team tonight. And giving up seven point
eight yards per carry. The other thing that you allowed
(54:34):
to happen with this loss, and this is what I think,
this is what I think probably frustrates me the most
in my capacity of doing this radio show and covering
Clemson full time. What you ended up doing by losing
(54:56):
this ballgame is allowing the verbiage to exist with some
level of support that the teams you have faced in
app State, NC State, Stanford, Florida State, Wait Force in
Virginia are just trash. They're not They're not very good.
(55:22):
And when I think about the reputation that Clemson tries
to avoid, part of the avoidance of that is total success.
(55:43):
Because if you are dominating the opponents and beating the
teams you're supposed to beat, and people stand on the
sidelines and say to you, yeah, but you don't play anybody,
you go, well, we play everybody we can play. We
play everybody we can play. We try to win every game.
(56:04):
That's the only thing Clemson can do. But when you
don't win every game and one of those losses comes
up to a team that some people would certainly view
a suspect, even though they're three losses have come against
really talented ball clubs, you don't, you kind of lose
that leg to stand on and it's the It is
(56:29):
a byproduct of what I what I talk about here
a lot of times about the SEC, where I said, look,
in some leagues, you are somewhat protected by being in
that league. Meaning a two loss Alabama team is sitting
pretty good to make the college football playoffs. Not great,
but pretty good fifty six percent chance for the Crimson Tide.
(56:52):
And they have two losses, one of which, can we
all agree here, one of which is against a team
worse than Louisville in I think in Vanderbilt at this point.
Now you know, maybe if those two teams had to play,
I'd be wrong, But either way, there is no You
(57:18):
just don't have the cushion in the Atlantic Coast Conference
that maybe some teams in the SEC have, and so
you almost have to be perfect. But when you are perfect,
and when you play very well, and if your only
loss was to Georgia, no matter how much people on
the sidelines want to say, man, you didn't play anybody,
you shouldn't even be there, you say, look, we play
(57:39):
who we can play. We've played everybody we can play,
and that's all we can do. And then we'll take
our talents to the postseason and see how we hold
up and then if you go into that postseason, you
win a game, you shut up a lot of the
people that are, you know, detractors. But when you are
(58:06):
sitting here and you've got two losses, you don't really
have a whole lot on the schedule, a lot of
meat on the schedule that you would say from the
rear view that you would say, yeah, you know what,
clemps would beat a solid team, Like if Florida State
was what people had expected Florida State to be and
(58:27):
Clempson beat them, then maybe they are closer to in
Alabama because they'd have that quality win. But that win
against Florida State at this point, and I'm not sure
we've ever seen a program fall as fast as the Seminoles,
but that win against Florida State at this point, it
seems seems useless, worthless, like it doesn't even matter. It could, yeah,
(58:53):
I mean, you could pick the worst team in college
football and put their name in there and beating them
twenty nine to thirteen would give you about the same
result that you're currently getting from having defeated Florida State
by that same margin. But there is I mean, if
there was little to no margin of eraon previously, which clearly,
(59:16):
looking at it now, I think everybody would agree that's
the case. Clearly, another stumble and it's over. Because it's
pretty much over at this point, I think they could
certainly went out. Funnier things have happened in the world
of college football. This will give you an indication of
(59:39):
how well Davis when he's able to kind of keep
this team focused, and it's been one of his strong suits.
I mean, you go back to last season and the
fact that that was a four and four team that
finished nine to four. If there is a coaching college
football that I would put my trust in getting his
(01:00:02):
team ready and prepared for next week's matchup or this
coming weekend's matchup against Virginia Tech, it would absolutely be
Dabo Sweeney And Checking out ESPN's matchup predicted for the
ball game, it says Clemson should win this game sixty
two point six percent of the time. The Tigers are
(01:00:24):
favored by six and a half. But as you know,
last week, Clempson was favored by eleven at home and
look way good that did you. You know, at the
end of the day, you gotta perform, and Virginia Tech
has a lot to play for. They had a heartbreaking
(01:00:44):
loss this past weekend to Syracuse, however, thirty eight thirty one,
and now that was on the road at the QS.
But I would speculate and wonder if there is concern
from Blacks of letting one game beat you twice. And honestly,
(01:01:04):
you could argue Clemson sort of in that same boat.
But it's not like, you know, the Tigers were leading
thirty one twenty six and Louisville scored in the last
minute to beat you Clemson. Clemson absorbed that loss for
about the final thirty minutes of action on the field,
(01:01:27):
like it was pretty evident things weren't really going to
go the Tiger's way, and they had a few moments
here and there, but for a large part, you could
pretty much resign yourself to the fact that you weren't
winning that game against Louisville, and special teams play continued
to be an issue. That's a frustrating thing because you've
(01:01:50):
got a kicker in Nolan Hoosier who is really been
phenomenal as a freshman. But with Peter Woods out, the
Clemson left side of that offensive line during field goal
(01:02:11):
block has been absolutely abysmal. Just it's sad, real sad.
All right, quick break. When we come back, we'll take
a look at some of the top stories in college
football right after this rocket and rolling along with you
on a Monday afternoon, The Show that Shakes the south
Land Clemson Sports, tal Laws and Swan eight oh three,
four to five zero zero zero eighty six. All right,
(01:02:34):
So a couple of things want to get to here,
I said, we get to some some information or some
some some content out of the college football weekend. Well,
how about Florida and Georgia. I mean, if DJ Lagway
doesn't get hurt in that ball game, and by the way,
he has not been ruled out yet. For Florida's matchup
(01:02:57):
with Texas, he was carted off of the field in
a ten to three game, Florida was leading against the
Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia eventually pulled away in the second half,
but the Dogs scored twenty eight points, fourteen to the
third and fourteen in the fourth quarter. But when Jakobe
(01:03:20):
Jackson scored on a fifteen yard run with seven to
twenty nine left, it's a twenty twenty ballgame, and Georgia
scores with four to one left. There was a quick
turnover and they scored again with three to zero three
left to put a larger margin on the board than expected.
Carson beckovercame three interceptions in the ballgame. But man, is
(01:03:41):
it is really hard not to believe that if DJ
Lagway is in the game instead of aiding Warner, that
Florida and Billy Napier find a way to win that game.
It just felt like that ballgame was going Florida's way
and for Napier that would have been a huge win.
(01:04:05):
The thing I think you have to ask yourself at
this point when we talk about the Florida Gators in
their head coaching position, is whether or not fans will
look at their four and four record two and three
(01:04:26):
in the SEC and recognize how close they they really
were to beating Georgia or is this just a done deal?
Regardless of how it plays out. For Napier, they're at
Texas at noon on ABC. They've got to match up
with LSU coming up. Then they'll face Ole Miss. So
(01:04:51):
right now, three Top sixteen games remaining and their final
game of the season against Florida State. If you lose
that one, I will say this, if you lose that
Florida State game, you are absolutely fired because they are
They are horrible this year. More on the Seminoles in
(01:05:11):
a minute. We talked about South Carolina and their victory
over Texas A and M impressive forty four to twenty
in the final score. Well, the game Cocks were fined
two hundred and fifty thousand dollars by the Southeastern Conference
for their fans rushing the field. It was a easy
(01:05:33):
price to pay. The Game Cocks were fined one hundred
grand back in January when the men's basketball team defeated
number six Kentucky seventy nine sixty two. Another offense for
South Carolina storming the field would cost half a million dollars. Now,
I don't know when those policies reset for these teams,
(01:05:58):
but I don't think Shane or South Carolina fans care
at all about if it happens again. They wanted to
happen again. And as Shane Beemer said leaving his press conference,
just don't take the money out of our nil funds,
And so Beamer and the game Cocks winning against A
(01:06:24):
and M, a top ten team in Williams Brice Stadium,
storming the field but at what cost doesn't really matter.
It doesn't game COG fans just go out and have
a little fun and celebrate a huge victory. I would
argue the biggest victory Shane Beamer's ever had in Colombia
(01:06:45):
as the head coach. And the final thing I mentioned
Florida State. They are one in eight after an undefeated season.
They are one in seven in the ACC and I'm
(01:07:05):
really starting to wonder if the unconquered rings that they
gave out when they had a loss, I'm starting to
wonder if those things aren't an actual Like you remember
the Brady Bunch episode where they go to Hawaii and
one of the boys ends up with like unlucky talisman
(01:07:28):
or something and people are breaking their legs and all
kind of stuff's happening bad to the family. I'm wondering
if Florida State's been jinxed by those rings. I mean,
I'm not superstitious, but it's hard to it's hard to argue.
(01:07:49):
Florida State's got three matchups remaining at Notre Dame this weekend,
which feels like a surefire one and nine start to
the year. I would expect they'll get their second win
of the season against Charleston Southern on November the twenty third,
(01:08:10):
and then they faced Florida the team we were just
talking about a few minutes ago on November the thirtieth.
I think this ends up being a two to ten
team right off the heels of arguing that you should
have been in the college football Playoff, that you should
have had a shot to play for a national championship.
And you come back the next year and this is
(01:08:35):
the performance. And I get it the quarterback situation and DJ,
but this is not I mean, they got to be
thirty five to eleven by North Carolina. They have scored
twenty points in a game once this year, in the
opener against Georgia Tech. Here's here's Florida State's points scored
(01:09:00):
twenty one, thirteen, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, thirteen, sixteen, fourteen eleven.
It sounds like they're playing football in the eighteen hundreds.
I mean, it feels like they're playing football before the
(01:09:20):
forward pass wasn'tvented. It's one of the most unbelievable turn
of events in sports. I can remember the greatest crash
in college football history in terms of going from the
top to the bottom. From first to worst, you might say, wow,
(01:09:47):
the Seminoles riding the struggle bus. Quick break will come
back with more here on a Monday afternoon, stay with
us Clemson Sports. Saw the show shakes the south Land again.
We weren't able to get up with William qualkin Bush
because he was on the call for the Clemson women's
basketball game again. Clemson men's basketball coming up tonight at
(01:10:12):
seven o'clock. The Clemson women did a number on Jackson
State today. More on that in just a little bit.
But k Klubnick, Clemson quarterback honestly did not have a
terrible game by any means. Thirty three of fifty six
two hundred and twenty eight yards, just one touchdown, no interceptions,
(01:10:37):
carried the ball twelve times for forty three yards. Like statistically,
you look at the numbers and you go, man, how
did how did this Clemson team get beat by twelve?
I mean they were pummeled. They were absolutely pummeled. You
when you enter the fourth quarter of a ball game
down twenty six to seven, you're getting punched in the
(01:10:58):
mouth and you know you you missed the you have
the block kicks, you know, and all that, and thank
goodness that hasn't affected as I said earlier, hadn't affected
no one who's here that somehow, you know, I think
he's still right between the years. Can't think of a
(01:11:18):
worse way to, you know, kind of start a freshman guys,
a freshman kicker's career when he's been really outstanding. But
the biggest problem is his line is not the line
is that giving him a chance to you know, make
those kicks.
Speaker 3 (01:11:38):
Anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:11:38):
Kate club Itt met with the media following Clemson's loss
to Louisville, and he looked like, I mean, he looked
like somebody had kicked his dog. I mean, I think,
when you know, you think about the college football playoff
and you think about this new twelve team era, you
still have to have not perfection, but some level of perfection.
(01:12:04):
If you're not in the SEC or the Big Ten,
you can't really afford two losses. And he looks like
he knows Clemson wasn't gonna make the college football Playoff
after that loss, even though their chances are still there
but very slim. Here's Kate Clubnick when asked about the
mood in the locker room following Clemson's thirty three to
(01:12:25):
twenty one loss to Louisville.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
I mean, we're pissed because we lost. I'm pissed just
because we've given so much that's just not acceptable and
in our execution and our effort, in my play and everybody's,
everybody's play is just wasn't like us and just pissed,
(01:12:50):
not even sad, just mad.
Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
From your kate, Clubney, they're talking about how frustrated he
was with the loss. He was also ask about the
rhythm of Clemson's offense in that ball game.
Speaker 3 (01:13:06):
It didn't a great on first downs.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
You know, whenever you're getting yourself into second and long
and third and longs, it's a tough spot. Really similar
to the first game. We've put it a year in
terms of of that issue. So gotta do better on
first downs and get drives going, you know, p intends and.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
I think that's it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:28):
Club Nick was also asked about Clemson's pace. That's one
of the things I was even critical of on social media.
It just felt like when they're down, they weren't playing
very fast. Here's club Nick talking about what was going
on there.
Speaker 2 (01:13:44):
I mean, I feel like we're moving pretty fast. Maybe
maybe could have gone a couple faster fast plays. There's
just also just like you know, a couple of injuries
that they had and some some weird stuff that happened.
But maybe at times we could be gone a litle fist.
Speaker 1 (01:14:00):
Thank k club Nick, Clemson quarterback again after Clemson's thirty
three twenty one loss. Yeah, he said he wasn't sad,
He's more mad. I told you like somebody kicked his dog,
club Nick. I was also asked about you know this week,
you know today Monday, and what the Tigers needed to
(01:14:21):
do to get ready for this matchup against Virginia Tech.
Speaker 3 (01:14:26):
I just told the guys on.
Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
The show up tomorrow, I'll be a facility from twelve
to seven tomorrow, get my body right, watching film, getting treat,
making my recovery run, and I'll show up on Monday
and kick Monday's ass, show up on Tuesday, kick Tuesday's ass,
show up on Wednesday, kick Tuesday Wednesday's ass, and then
carry off forward and could be the best weekend next Saturday.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
That's Kate club Nick talking about getting ready for this
matchup against Virginia Tech. And again, if you have it
kept up with the Hokies, It's been a disappointing year.
I would say for that group. I mean, you know,
Kyrone Drones at quarterback is a unbelievable football player. I mean,
(01:15:14):
he is a specimen when you see him. But they're
five and four, three and two in the league, incredibly.
Three and two in the ACC puts you in the
upper half of a seventeen team league. But it's been
very up and down. They lost to Vanderbilt. You know,
everybody kind of crushed them for that. Who knew that
Vandy would be what they are? They beat Marshall and
(01:15:35):
Old Dominion, you should beat them. They lost to Rutgers
in Miami, then they beat Stanford Boston College at Georgia Tech,
and then they lost in overtime thirty eight thirty one
this past week to Syracuse. But they'll certainly be ready
for the Clemson Tigers when they come in. K club
That was also asked about the off week and how
(01:15:56):
he felt that affected the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
Wait this week practically all week or all year. I mean,
we've had none of the best, but we've had a
great week. You know, we had a great week of practice.
Speaker 5 (01:16:08):
And.
Speaker 3 (01:16:11):
You know, they just played better than we did today.
Speaker 1 (01:16:15):
Clubnit was also asked about Louisville's defense. And again I
gave you his stats earlier. I mean, it's not like
they slowed him down. The Tigers moved the ball up
and down the field, but they just didn't score.
Speaker 2 (01:16:29):
Just playing heavy inside leverage or sorry, playing heavy outside leverage.
So hard to get vertical balls just because they're not
letting you get outside of them, kind of forcing inside.
You know, when you're trying to go outside and they're
playing three yards outside, it's kind of tough.
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
And then just court.
Speaker 2 (01:16:45):
Safeties are going out of there. So they did a
good job of that in preparedness.
Speaker 1 (01:16:51):
So final thing from k club Nick. He was asked
about Dabo Sweeney's post game message to the team.
Speaker 2 (01:17:01):
Missed an opportunity and show up next week.
Speaker 1 (01:17:12):
You can hear right there in Kid's voice, incredible disappointment.
Incredible disappointment, all right. Final segment on the Monday, as
you lick your wounds here Tiger Nation. The game Cocks
are crowing after their victory over A and M, and
the Tigers got their head in the saying after their
loss to Louisville. Final segment around the band, stay with.
Speaker 5 (01:17:32):
Us, what have you done for me lately? It's a
fair question. Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture.
Don't forget history. Lucky for us at Clemson, the answer
to the questions what have you done for me lately?
Speaker 3 (01:17:53):
What have you done?
Speaker 5 (01:17:54):
Always are the same.
Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
We win.
Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
Sometime final segment on a Monday afternoon. Again, no way,
I'm walking Bush. I'll see if we can get up
with him coming up maybe Wednesday. I'll see if we
can move him back a little bit, because I gotta
get his reaction. Got to get qualt reaction to this
(01:19:03):
loss or the Clemson Tigers against Louisville. Now, speaking of losses,
the Clemson Tiger women's basketball team and William Qwalkin Bush
was on the call, gave Jackson State a loss in
the beginning of the Poppy era shown popping taken over
when he arrived from Chattanooga. Everybody's excited about the women's
(01:19:25):
basketball team with him in town, they win seventy eight
to forty four in his debut. The Clympson men's team
will open up their season tonight as they faced Charleston Southern.

bus of waking up on a Sunday hoping that it
was all just a dream, only to realize that it
was a nightmare. Still, and that's where you will be,
and I want to let you know that that is okay.
This is an okay place to be. And this is
a message not just for the Tiger fans who are
(01:21:15):
part of this program, this is a message for game
Cocks as well.
Speaker 3 (01:21:19):
So you could continue to peek over the fence at
the best radio.
Speaker 1 (01:21:22):
Showing the naked and game Cox. You know this very
much from you know, the bumps in the road that
you've had in recent years versus what maybe Clemson fans
have dealt with. Again, I was thinking about this. This
was the worst home loss that Clemson has suffered since
my first year in this current school district that I
(01:21:46):
am working in. You got to go back over a
decade to twenty thirteen to experience a home loss to
matt That's the one that you just saw. I mean
there have only been two others, and there were one
point losses the South Carolina game in the pit game.
(01:22:11):
The Tigers have been phenomenal at home in the college
football Playoff era, and I think what was so disappointing.
And I said this earlier about this game. Was was
simply how you were, you know, defeated, and it wasn't competitive.
And although it stings when you get a late field
(01:22:31):
goal for a victory or a team rallies with a
late touchdown to win a game, even though those sing sting,
I think when you hear Dabosweeny say yeah, winning is hard,
you go, yeah, look, how look how hard it is.
It's absolutely hard. Look how look at these heartbreaking losses.
But then when you kind of get busted right in
the face the way Clemson did this weekend, and it
(01:22:54):
doesn't change that winning is hard, but you go, God,
winning might be hard.
Speaker 3 (01:22:59):
But.
Speaker 1 (01:23:01):
How hard is it to compete? How hard is it
to be competitive? And it's such a letdown because there
were moments in that game against Louisville where I felt
like Clemson thought they could just flip the switch, that
they felt like they could just flip the switch. And
(01:23:23):
that is an unfortunate place to find a football team
or basketball team, because when you think you're just gonna
flip the switch nine times out of ten, it doesn't
go well because you end up getting yourself in a hole.
That you can't get out of. And when that game
(01:23:48):
went to the fourth quarter twenty six to seven, I
think most of you knew, based off of what had
happened in the first three quarters that the switch, even
if Clempson flipped it, it wasn't gonna be enough. There
wasn't enough time left for the team to make a run.
And so on to the next one. And we really
(01:24:10):
do officially turn our attention towards the next weekend, typically
on a Wednesday. We'll hold it over a little bit
this week because we'll try to get qualk on with
us on Wednesday. But either way, you know your Tigers
have themselves in a tough, tough spot and do not
control their destiny, don't control the outcome. Go read the
(01:24:31):
article on our website right now Clempsonsports saw dot Com
control what we can daboswingey rallies Clempson after home lost
to Louisville until tomorrow. As always, y'all take care now,
hey go Tigers,
