Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's time for Clipson Sports Talk with Lawton Swan. Now finally,

(00:45):
Clemson Sports Talk has come back two drive time. Hello everybody,
Lord Swan back in the saddle once again. It is
the show that shakes the south Land, Clemson Sports Talk.
If you each it every afternoon as you make your
way around the great state of South Carolina and beyond,

(01:05):
listening to us on incredible radio stations like Fox Sports
Radio fourteen under the Midlands, heard around the world on
the iHeartRadio application download today, it's free. The website put
dot com on a dog gunnet that's Clemson Sports Talk
dot com. And of course, the Show that shakespare south Land,
brought to you in part by our good friends over

(01:26):
at Mets Plumbing a Mets Plumbing dot com two to
six seven one eight Matt's Plumbing. That's two two six
seven to one zero eight. Did not get a chance
to dive into a couple of players from yesterday. We
had players today meeting with the media up in Tigertown,

(01:50):
including Wade Wood as will help in Abon Terrell. We
also had Brad Brownell and a couple of basketball players,
Nick Davidson and returner Dylan Hunter. For your Clemson Tiger
basketball team. As the Clyps of Tiger basketball team gets
ready to kick off the twenty twenty five twenty twenty

(02:11):
six campaign. And like many teams around the country in
college basketball, dare I say a little bit of an
enigma in what you're gonna get. Like my nephew texted
me yesterday and said, Hey, Swannee, what do you think
about this Clempson Tiger men's basketball team? And I was like, well,

(02:37):
I'm gonna be honest with you, not sure, but I
think they're gonna be pretty versatile, and I think they
got pretty high expectations. They will tip things off next Monday,
November the third, with a season opening contest against New Hampshire.
And I think for a lot of people, like the

(03:01):
nil transfer portal era of football is bothersome, But I
think if we go across the country, most rosters stay, yeah,
decently the same, moderately the same. But in college basketball

(03:26):
with the portal, the you know, the ability to go
into the NBA, especially if you're a star player like
Cooper flag at Duke a year ago, Like the roster
turnover in basketball just feels ginormous by comparison, to football,

(03:47):
and I know you don't like it in football, but
you know, Clemson had to pick to send some individuals
to the ACC tip off this year and only had
one guy really with playing time, Dylan Hunter, that they

(04:10):
could send, and you typically send at least two and
so R. J. Godfrey, who had been a part of
the Clemson team and left and now came back, was
the other representative for Clemson. It's going to be interesting
to see how this group shakes out, and I don't

(04:35):
think you are really gonna know, in all honesty, until
they get on the basketball court. There are things to
like about this group. I mentioned the versatility. There's also
a lot of length. They can play big if necessary.
I'm not sure what playing small will look like for

(04:57):
this group, but it is one of the bigger and
more versatile teams that I can remember, just in the
sense of the big guys who are six eight six nine,
six' ten ish being able to shoot from the. PERIMETER i,
mean it's it's gonna be, DIFFERENT i, think and one

(05:19):
of the good THINGS i think For Clemson tiger basketball,
fans of which you KNOW i. AM i openly admit
THAT i rise and fall With clemson basketball much more
THAN i rise and fall With clemson. FOOTBALL i, think
in part BECAUSE i played, basketball and in part Because

(05:41):
clemson basketball has never really achieved the level of success
that would make me feel like the team had accomplished
the goals THAT i want to. SEE i, MEAN i
am thankful for getting a chance to witness An elite eight.
Run for crying out, LOUD i really thought for YEARS

(06:04):
i was never gonna see. THAT i can't imagine what
it was like For South carolina fans when they made
their remarkable run and we were on the air two
thousand and what. SEVENTEEN i think it Was South. CAROLINA i,
mean just the fun That Frank martin's team gave game.

(06:31):
Cognation first, off it was their FIRST ncaa tournament victory
in my. Life they had not won AN ncaa tournament
game since nineteen seventy, three so for many of, you
it was your FIRST Ncaa tournament win. Ever and most

(06:56):
of those people were alive when they Saw South carolina's
first bowl win ever back in the early. Nineties the
pat yourself on the back for. That clemson had already
won bowl games AND ncaa tournament action in my life fairly.
Readily AND i don't consider The tigers some sort of

(07:18):
basketball powerhouse if you're picking up What i'm putting. Down but,
yeah when the Game cocks advance to The final, four
the buzz around town about basketball was so. Unique how
did that team? Finish who knocked him? Out now THAT

(07:41):
i don't, remember See South carolina Beat, florida got to
The final, four And gonzaga seventy seven seventy. Three that
was a TIGHT i don't remember that. GAME i don't

(08:06):
remember a thing about, It LIKE i don't remember if
there were a couple of possessions late where Maybe South
carolina could have won that. Game the Game cocks were
a seven. Seed gonzaga would go on to Face North,
carolina who Beat oregon seventy seven to seventy. Six that's
a couple of really good semi. Finals a one point

(08:29):
semi final and a four point semi. Final that's just
a great final. Four North carolina wins it by, six seventy,
one sixty. Five honest to, GOODNESS i don't know what
the results of the final fours have. BEEN i can't

(08:50):
remember all those, games you, know over the, years BUT
i would Imagine you'd be hard pressed to find a
tighter three game window than those games that were played
out In phoenix Or. GLENDALE i guess technically At Phoenix
stadium out In arizona for that final four in the,
Game cocks just short of making it to the national championship.

(09:15):
Game you, KNOW i Saw tennessee was playing the other.
DAY i can't remember who they were. Scrimmaging But Rick
barnes is still the head coach. There and there's a
little stat On Rick, barnes WHO i really liked when
he was At. CLEMSON i MEAN i. DID i loved

(09:37):
being a student At clemson With Rick barnes. Coaching but
my buddy, superfan he will let me know and Let
clemson fans, know and will be proud THAT i am
letting you. Know Rick barnes has never outperformed his sea

(10:02):
in THE ncaa. Tournament at no point in his career
has he ever outperformed his. Seeding and so what that so,
essentially what that means is he's never gotten past the
round that his seed line says he should get. To

(10:25):
that's a pretty shocking, number isn't. It it never won
a national, championship but it's never outplayed his seed, line
AND i don't Think tennessee did that a year, ago
AS i, RECALL i WOULD i would need to go
back to make sure that that is still a valid.
Measure let me matter of, fact let me throw that

(10:48):
in the twenty twenty FOUR Ncaa tournament and THEN i
can further explain what that. Means, so if you are
a one, seed out playing your seed line would mean
that you get to The National Championship, game you get
further than the final. Four tennessee last year was a two,

(11:15):
seed which would have meant they need to get to
the final four to outperform their seed, line because if
you're one of the top two teams in the you,
know the top two of each, region that's eight teams.
Remaining AND i do not think last season that they

(11:40):
pulled that. Off, yeah they got beat in The elite,
eight meaning they did not outperform their seed, line As
houston topp them sixty nine to, fifty keeping that streak.
Intact So barnes has never outperformed this seed. Line he
has never gotten further than his team has been seeded

(12:00):
to go in THE ncaa. Tournament that's a pretty shocking,
number And i'd have to go back and double check
all of, that But i'm pretty sure with last year's
result it kept it that, way and had he, won
it would have been the first time that he would
have ever pulled that feed. Off, hey by the, way
coming up an hour number, Two Don't forget will be

(12:23):
joined By Chad. Morris those segments have been. Spectacular people
are loving hearing From Chad. Morris, obviously This Clemson tiger
football team has absolutely underperformed this, season and they get
out there on the grid iron this weekend in what
has become relatively quickly a must win game to achieve

(12:48):
routine task like making a bowl. Game and think about
how far outside of the norm this is For clemson,
football especially given how successful they have been Under Dabo
sweeney since twenty. ELEVEN i, mean they have won ten

(13:14):
games plus every year since twenty, eleven outside of one
season twenty twenty three when they won. Nine and this
dip is. REAL i, mean this dip is. Legit and
if you lose To duke this, weekend you are now
at five losses And clemson hasn't had five losses since

(13:41):
two thousand and. Eight Tommy balden's final year which ended
halfway through When Dabo sweeney took, over and five lost,
seasons unfortunately For Tommy, balden who is a guest on
this program Every, friday happened quite. Frequently LIKE i, think

(14:02):
we do see The Tommy bowden years with a modicum of.
Success some of that may be because of the two
thousand and three, season Which Dabo sweeney reflected on this
week during his time with the. Media there were three
nine win seasons Under Tommy. Balden there were also three

(14:29):
six loss seasons Under Tommy. Balden there were three five
loss seasons Under Tommy. Balden there were also three four
loss seasons Under Tommy. Balden in just one season Under
Tommy bowden with three losses or, less and that was

(14:54):
the two thousand year Where clemson went nine to three
and lost in The Gator. Bowl That Gator ball lost
coming TO i believe A Mike vick Led Virginia tech.
Squad AS i, recall If bowden had won that, game you,

(15:17):
know if that two Thousand clemson team wins The Gator
bowl and finishes the season ten and two And Gator ball,
champs how's the future Under bowden maybe. Different that's still
very early on in his. Tenure and they had been

(15:39):
really good that. SEASON i think they jumped out to
an eight to er record heading into The october twenty
eighth matchup Against Georgia, tech and they ended up losing
that game thirty one twenty. Eight AND i don't remember
much about that, game BUT i was looking at the

(16:06):
playbook AND i don't know if The woodrow danceler got.
HURT i really need to go back and verify. THIS
i can't remember. It but with one fifty two left
and trailing twenty four to twenty, One Willie simmons Found

(16:28):
Rod gardner for an eighteen yard touchdown to Give clemson
a twenty eight to twenty four lead with just one
minute and fifty two seconds, remaining and The Yellow jackets
would go eleven plays eighty yards in one forty, five
scoring with just seven seconds left a touchdown to take

(16:51):
a thirty, one twenty eight lead on The Clemson. Tigers,
yeah you talk about you talk about. FRUSTRATING i, mean
that's the type game that just you just want to
punch yourself That clemson couldn't pull that. Often if they

(17:12):
do pull that. Off they then go to nine to
zero on the. Season they would have certainly lost at
number Four Florida. STATE i think either, way That Florida
state team beat them fifty four to. Seven but Then
clemson comes back sneaky victory Over South carolina sixteen to.
Fourteen my college roommates got the game winning field goal

(17:35):
from that one and brought the ball home WHEN i
got home that, night the football was at my. Apartment
and Then clemson would go on to lose Against Virginia
tech in The Gator. Bowl but looking back On dablosweeney's
run and what is at stake here is putting up

(17:59):
a five loss season for the first time since his
second year At clemson when The tigers are six and,
seven and the year prior to, that his first season
when they went nine to. Five, like you can see
the momentum turn Under Dabo. Sweeney you can see this
this bell curve is almost perfect in a, sense and

(18:28):
you just wonder do they have what it takes to
muster this number back to, hold you, know somewhere on
that eight nine win line potentially by the end of the,
season or as the kids, say are you just? Cooked

(18:48):
if you fall the three and five with the games
That clemson has got, Remaining, FOLKS i don't feel great
about that at. ALL i do not feel great about
that at. ALL a zero, three four five zero zero
eighty SIX i would label this. Game and you have
not heard me say this all that often on this

(19:10):
program in the twenty years i've been talking About. Clemson
you're gonna hear a word right now about This duke
game that you have rarely heard me, say and it's
technically two words with a hyphen in. THEM i believe
this is a must win. GAME a must win game

(19:32):
not from the sense of making the college football, playoffs
not from the sense of scrounging your way into THE Acc.
CHAMPIONSHIP i, mean this is just a must win game
from the sense of Your clemson and at some point
you gotta wake up from this funk that you've been
in all. Season this needs to be the wake up
call for The tigers because the sledding gets tougher after,

(19:56):
this And duke will not be a. Pushover stay with,
Us Lowton swan back with you on A wednesday. Afternoon
AS i mentioned before the, Break Chad morris coming up
in hour number, Two go talk with him today about
play sheet, organization, LIKE i don't know much about, it
AND i don't know if are all the plays on?

(20:17):
There how do you kind of go, through you, know
the play. Calls the other THING i started thinking about
more and, More but is where we're seeing teams Like
vanderbilt And duke and some others who maybe have bigger,

(20:41):
pockets if that's the right way to think about, it
becoming more Influent. Indiana maybe it's the bigger pockets In.
INDIANA i JUST i quite frankly don't, know BUT i
do wonder is this the beginning of an era where
some teams that don't have your typical names aren't popping

(21:06):
up as the contenders for the college Football? Playoff and
Maybe Virginia Antoni elliott to some degree fall into that.
CATEGORY i just can't put my finger on what has
changed in the. Landscape. Now there are still some of

(21:28):
these same elite teams that have been, there and it
is certainly not Just clemson who has vacated the premises
of the college football playoff, conversation but of the team's
REMAINING i, Mean clemson is one of those that has

(21:48):
sort of vanished in recent, years that has been there quite.
Frequently maybe we Lump Georgia tech maybe BYU f into this.
CATEGORY i, MEAN i don't know what The mormons are
trying to put into their football operation out and bring them,
young but maybe. So and, Look i'm not saying it's

(22:16):
bad for the sport to have different teams being. Competitive,
HECK i think it's good for the sport to have
different teams being. Competitive but it definitely brings the question
forward from WHERE i sit simply how valuable or how

(22:41):
much has this new era changed it so that teams
Like indiana can be number two in the country Or
Georgia tech being number eight In Georgia tech maybe not.
FAIR i, mean they won a national championship in what
nineteen ninety split it With. COLORADO i THINK i believe
that was the ninety. Season so they've had success in

(23:01):
the modern. Era they're traditionally kind of built on the
old School John heisman, era but it's a proud fan
base and it's a smaller, stadium but being there when
they Beat clemson and talking to some of my buddies
who went to school there and have a box, there

(23:22):
like the pride factor is one hundred something that they
still have and they want to be, great and they've
got old ties to The Southeastern, conference but this new
era just changes the conversation and the dynamic of what

(23:43):
teams are currently sitting at the. Top AND i think
For clemson the question has to become AND i think
it Was William Qwalkin bush On monday that talked about,
this how do you begin to adjust your recruiting to
fit this new? Era and like my thing has been

(24:08):
for a long, time Will clemson cross over into the
realm of where they offer players? Early and this could
be something too that we address With Chad morris later
because we've talked to him a little bit about recruiting

(24:28):
and a guy getting on your, Radar but Does clemson
need to modernize their approach in terms of the recruiting
aspect of it all and getting in earlier and earlier with.
Players and then when you have a couple of decommits

(24:51):
the Way clemson has, had with potentially more to, come
you also start to wonder how valuable that commitment that
dabos when he honed in on for so many, years
how valuable that terminology is to some of these. Players

(25:14):
and if the players that you're bringing in don't value
the things that you, value like, commitment or maybe you're
not even bringing them. In but the guys that you
have on your docket don't value. Commitment it's not really
worth a whole. Lot how do you find guys that
do still value those? Things or has this whole you,

(25:39):
know you, know the transactional nature of the. Business has
that allowed these schools to Pass Dabos when you BUY i,
mean Was dabos when he was clearly in the slow
lane on the, portal clearly against the CONCEPT i think

(26:02):
of nil initially has absolutely modified his stance and has
made that public that you, know because people held against
him the thought of, well when players get, paid that's
When i'm out of. Here but it is shifted under his.
Feet AND i don't Think dabosweeny has the desire to coach,

(26:24):
professionally AND i don't think That dabosweeny really wants to
coach anywhere else other Than. Clemson AND i think if
there's ever a reason that he coaches anywhere, else it
will be Because clemson shifts gears and decides that they

(26:45):
are willing to move away From. Dabo and right, NOW
i would say you shouldn't be. There the man has
done more than any coach in the history of this,
program and he's put you in a spot that many
of you can only and the success that he's given
you is un inconceivable by comparison to what you've done.

(27:09):
Historically BUT i would think that If clemson moved on From,
Sweeney sweeney would go coach somewhere else for this, reason
AND i think this reason, alone because he loves working
with student athletes and young men and helping them and
investing in. Them quick. Break we'll come back with more

(27:32):
here on A wednesday. Afternoon Lawton Swine Clemson Sports, Talk
The show That shakes the South. Land our, website clemsonsports
tal dot. Com wave wood, Ass clemson, linebacker met with
the media yesterday to talk about the bye week and
getting focused for this matchup against The Duke Blue. Devils here's.

(27:54):
Why wood as on what The tigers got covered during
their time away FROM i can't say away from the,
field that's not, fair but away from competition On saturday
with that bye.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
Week, yeah it was. Great like, PERSONALLY i got a,
massage so my body feels pretty. Good, yeah it was
good to just relax you, know take your mind off
football a little.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
Bit AND i would imagine these guys really want to
take their mind off of football a little bit kind
of given the way things have gone for this. Team
and it's not just been the, offense, RIGHT i mean
the defense in THAT smu game some lackluster, play especially
when you consider that that Wake forest HELD semu to twelve.
Points this past, week Wake forest HELD smu to twelve.

(28:41):
Points here's what ass talking about the areas of emphasis
for This Clemson tiger.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Defense you, KNOW i think one thing we've emphasized really
is taken the ball, away like especially during, practice just
like against scout against our scout, team, guy best second,
guy their guy in there to wrap, up just punch
at the, ball rip it. Out that's definitely been a

(29:08):
big thing for.

Speaker 1 (29:08):
Sure That's clemson Linebacker way would. As he was also
asked if the defense has felt disappointed in the fact
that they have not generated. Turnovers of, course their terminology
this season was. Takeaways that was kind of the change
that was made When Todd allen. Arrived here's What wood
has had to say about The you know how the

(29:29):
team's felt about not creating more? Turnovers, yeah for.

Speaker 2 (29:33):
SURE i mean we're three and, four so obviously everything's been,
disappointing but, yeah, definitely because takeaways are our way to
impact the game defensively and just provide momentum for the.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
Offense wood has also talked about balancing the preseason expectations
and the reality of the. Season and LIKE i, said
this team could become one of JUST i think three
teams in twenty years to start in the top five
and not make a bowl. Game like that's a reality
that exists for This Clemson tiger football. Team Here's wood

(30:14):
ass talking about balancing that the preseason expectations versus the.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
REALITY i just think perspective and then. GRATITUDE i Think
i've dreamt of being here SINCE i was.

Speaker 1 (30:33):
A.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
KID i have a picture of me WHEN i was
like six years old standing by the, rock and Now i'm,
here and, yeah of, court EVERYTHING i had into this,
season into the, offseason into getting to where we want to,
go and sometimes you just don't get the results you.

(30:53):
Want but that's. LIFE i, Mean Steve, jobs it took
them ten years to make an, iPhone right something like,
that the same. Thing that's a, lot that's a lot.
Hard he went through ten years of. Disappointment we've gone
through three four, months whatever it's. Been but, YEAH i

(31:14):
just think perspective on how many people would love to
be standing at this stand right now giving an interview
Representing clemson and then just a deeper appreciation of WHERE
i am and Where i've come.

Speaker 1 (31:29):
From that's way Wood, Ass AND i, mean that's a
pretty impressive way to look at. It LIKE i get.
It my job is to be. Critical my job is
to toot the horn when when things go. Well And
wade Wood ass just stood in the fire and, said,
hey let's let's talk about the reality of what the

(31:51):
SITUATION i am in and the opportunity That i've, had
and how few people have that. Opportunity and, yes it
has not been the season they. Wanted it's not like
he's walking around, going, man what a great, year look at,
me look at. ME i can appreciate. That what has
also talked about the motivation for the remainder of the,

(32:15):
season given where this team sits at three and, four.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
How did you actually my girlfriend just texting me earlier this.
Morning it was a long, message but that was the
basis of. It, LIKE i have five weeks left, HERE
i have five weeks left of my brother being my
neighbor living across the. STREET i have five weeks left
of having roommates and dancing in the locker room after,

(32:44):
practice and so just appreciating. That, yeah it's kind of
it's like just now starting to hit, me like TODAY
i have thirty two days. Left so, yeah just being
appreciative of WHERE i am and just leaving it all out,

(33:09):
there no.

Speaker 1 (33:10):
Regret we'll see if no regret can become sort of
a rallying cry for this group given where they, are
and can they finish better than you AND i and
probably the rest of college football. Expect the funny thing
is nobody's talking about, Them nobody brings them, up nobody

(33:31):
talks About. Clemson what has also was asked about how
he's able to continue to enjoy the game during this.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
Adversity how obviously there's, Disappointment losing isn't. Fun i'm not saying,
that but the deeper appreciation of WHERE i, am like
so many people would love to be playing college. Football
ONLY i don't know. THAT i Bet ross knows the
percentage of how many high school kids to get to

(34:00):
play college. Football, yeah it's like one point seven percent or.
Something so just being grateful for, that and THEN i
get to do it at a place Like, clemson LIKE
i get to go play In Death valley On. Saturday
just be grateful for. That and, obviously like we haven't
got the, results who? Want but that doesn't just because
you don't get the results doesn't mean you don't go
back to, work doesn't mean you don't go pour everything
you've got into. It i'm still gonna do that regardless

(34:22):
Whether i'm oh in thirty seven or eighty five and,
oh it's gonna be the same process every. WEEK a
lot of. Times results this is From Nick, saban results
Are i'm pretty sure he, said results are just a.
Distraction it's the process that really. Matters so every day showing,

(34:43):
up pouring everything you've got into this. Day what AM
i doing? Today, Okay wednesday, MORNING i woke, UP i,
lifted AND i took a, nap and Then i'm gonna
go watch tape and practice what AM i doing every
single day contributing to that. Process what, happened what happens
on the weekend.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Is just a.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
Distraction it's about WHAT i do every single.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
Day That's clemson Linebacker way would ask quick, Break we'll
put a boat on our one and we'll come back
an hour two With Chad. Morse stay with. Us final
segment of our one coming, Up Chad. Morse don't forget
about our friends In Alumni hall right there on the
corner of campus On College, avenue Downtown clemson for all
your officially Licensed clemson, merchandise, HATS t, shirts tailgate, gear
those Sweet nike drive hit polos that you. KNOW i.

(35:26):
Love their hat wall. Impeccable ask them about Their Alumni
hall rewards, program Plus clemson students faculty in all military
you get ten percent off of the shopping in. Store
go check them out today online at alumni haul dot
com or right downtown across From bowmanfield where they are
building the. Floats and that's something THAT i THINK i.

(35:50):
MENTIONED i can't remember if we talked about this, Earlier
but Is clemson the only school that their homecoming floats.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Like?

Speaker 1 (36:03):
That or is that? NORMAL i honestly don't. Know. Now
the tradition surrounding homecoming and the spirit that's in the
air dates back over one hundred, years back to nineteen

(36:24):
twenty two When clemson Met Center college in football and
The Homecoming day was surrounded the football game was set
aside a welcome back for alumni on. Campus and you,
know homecoming is not just unique To, clemson BUT i

(36:46):
feel like the displays. Are and so a few days
before the homecoming football, game they go out and they
put these big what looked like old telephone. Poles they

(37:09):
put those, up and fraternities and sororities and other groups
construct these huge. Displays like WHEN i think of a homecoming,
Float i've always thought of like the thing in the
parade that has, flowers like that was a. Float like

(37:30):
NOW i shouldn't say, flowers because that's really The Rose
parade that has, them but that's WHAT i think of a.
Float right you have this this flat bed something and
the other being pulled by a, truck and you, know
the homecoming queens on the. Float this is, different but

(37:54):
we call them floats right. Now there's always a central,
theme typically, speaking and according To Sam, blackman who wrote
an article on it years, ago it's unlike anything else
in the. Country so maybe nobody else does. This and
it's not exactly known when those displays were first, started

(38:20):
but before fraternities came to, campus The clemson cadets would
make signs in small displays encouraging the tigers to. Victory
and all of that started back in the early, twenties late,
twenties early. Thirties which makes me wonder what we're gonna

(38:40):
call Now in thirty, years When i'm seventy, eight what
will we call now the twenties the twenty, Twenties LIKE
i feel like the twenties will still be the nineteen,
twenties at least for people my. Age for the younger,
generation they might consider this the. Twenties we've got Our

(39:04):
we've got ourselves a conundrum coming up. NOW i don't
know again whether or not other schools do this. ANYWHERE
i know at one, Point TEXAS a AND m had
their huge bonfire and there was a tragedy where that bonfire.

(39:34):
COLLAPSED i think back in nineteen ninety nine WHEN i
was in, college and the thing about the bonfire, collapse
AND i let me see how many individuals died in
this tragic. Event let's, see at approximately two forty two

(39:54):
Am november, eighteen nineteen ninety, nine the Annual aggie bonfire
At TEXAS a AND m collapse during its, construction killing
twelve people And injuring twenty. SEVEN i mean it was.
TERRIBLE a fifty nine foot high stack consisting of five
thousand logs collapsed during the, construction AND i mean it's,

(40:19):
terrible absolutely horrific what happened, There there's no doubt about.
It BUT i go back and look at images not
of the tower that, collapsed but just the towers in
general That, TEXAS a AND m would build for this,
bonfire and, honestly it's one of the scariest looking things

(40:49):
you've ever, seen like when you look at, it And
i'm sure there were lawsuits AND i don't know what
safety things existed back, then BUT i, mean it looks
like it's bad news from the get. Go do they

(41:13):
still do. IT i can't imagine they still do.

Speaker 3 (41:18):
It do?

Speaker 1 (41:19):
They maybe they, do they do not following that fatal
collapse in nineteen ninety, nine and then in twenty twenty,
four they the president stated that it is not in

(41:41):
the best interest of the university to bring it back to. Campus,
dude it look so. Dangerous SO i don't know what
they've replaced it. With but that thing That clemson does
with the with the floats is certainly, unique AND i
just don't know who.

Speaker 4 (41:59):
You.

Speaker 1 (41:59):
KNOW i just don't know who came up with it
or when it got. Created it's certainly unique in the
world of college. Sports AND i don't know why they're called.
Floats can somebody else tell me? That why are they called?
Floats all? RIGHT i don't Know Chad. MORRIS i don't
think he can tell, us but we'll talk to him

(42:20):
all about play sheets and much more when we get.
Back stay with. Us it's time for clips and sports
talk With Lawton. Swan it is our number. Two that's

(43:10):
drivetime right here on the Show The shakespeare South, Land
Clemson Sports, Talk low And swan hanging out with you
on A. Wednesday Former Clemson tiger roffensive, coordinator former head
coach AT smu And Arkansas Chad morris joins us momentarily
and again the Show The Shakespare South alane brought you
in part by our good friends over At Mets Plumbing

(43:31):
Metts plumbing Dot com two two six seven one zero
eight two two six seven to one zero eight give
him a call. Today That's Mett's plumbing all. Right out
of the, Gates hour. Two Chad morris joins. Us. Coach,
welcome In. Hope you've had a great. Week, man another
exciting victory for The Virginia. Cavaliers what a finish up

(43:53):
In Chapel hill and Over.

Speaker 3 (43:54):
Tom, yeah you, Know i'm so over At. LAWTON i
am so over these close. GAMES i, mean you, know
it's a it is it's it's. Everything you got to
last for three and a half hours in these close,
games and even you know now being the third overtime
and but the third overtime, win and you know that
that's that's the great. THING i, mean we were able

(44:17):
to find ways to. Win and maybe you don't play as.
WELL i don't think they played as well last. Week
and but you, know Give North carolina. CREDIT i think
those guys were, playing, uh played hard and really really
improved over the last few. Weeks but, yeah hey it's,
uh you take it and it's seven and one and and,

(44:37):
man hey we're in the driver's. Seat but it's there
ain't a whole lot of fun to those close.

Speaker 1 (44:43):
Games, Well i'll tell you WHAT i think back when
you AND I i'm you're just a little bit older than.
Me BUT i remember when when we were growing up
in college football had. TIES i remember being At clemson
Versus South carolina in the eighties and it ended with a,
tie AND i, thought, man there's never been anything more
uneventful in my. Life AND i don't love the overtime

(45:03):
rules that we currently. HAVE i like the way the first.
One then you, know once it gets into the two point,
conversion that's just that's just. Silliness BUT i will say
it sure beats having ties out, there.

Speaker 3 (45:15):
Oh without a, doubt no. Doubt and, uh you know
that that's the one thing that you, like is you
know that that at the end of the, night you're
gonna walk away and one team's gonna win and one team's.
Not and and, yeah the tie breaker system is it's
good in some. Regards and, then like you, said when
you get into two, points it's it's it's just it's

(45:36):
a little bit it's it's it's kind of a little
bit tougher at that. Point but, hey, yeah overtime and
getting to, win you take it and you go to
the next. One you hope they don't put any more
time back on the.

Speaker 1 (45:46):
Clock, yeah it becomes a little bit, hokey so to.
Speak with some of the, plays the gadget plays that you'll,
see let me ask, you as a, coach with the
way the new overtime rules, are would you do What
Bill belichick did? Typically would you you just, say, hey
we're gonna take advantage of the chance to go for
two first and see if we can just put this
thing to.

Speaker 3 (46:06):
Rest, well you, KNOW i set up, there and WHEN
i saw what he was, DOING i JUST i Told.
PAULA i, said, no he's not doing. This there's no
way you do, this not not right. Now not your
defense has been playing. Good you just. Don't he just
don't do. IT i didn't think. So and but after

(46:26):
stepping back from it and looking and, Going, okay they're
struggling right. Now all year, long they're whatever one or two,
wins whatever they've gotten this. Year he's at, home And
i'm sure in his thought process is let's try to
win it right here and and move. ON i, mean you,
know what's our. RECORD i, mean what's the. Difference you.
Know but it would be really interesting to see if

(46:48):
the rolls were flipped that if he was sitting there
six and one in the conference and or six and
one and undefeating, conference would he could have, said, No
i'm Gonna i'm gonna keep my defense and let's just
see how this thing plays itself. Out Uh, SO i,
yeah WOULD i done? IT i Know, NO i wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (47:06):
HAVE i would.

Speaker 3 (47:06):
HAVE i would have went ahead and and and went kicked,
it went to the next, overtime and just see IF
i couldn't my defense couldn't have came up with a
big play for.

Speaker 1 (47:15):
Me Chad moore is hanging out with us here on
A wednesday afternoon talking a little bit about college, football
and that's WHERE i want to, go because you get
you've given us so much insight into an aspect of
the sport that we can't really, get including right there
that decision that you, make uh in an overtime. Situation.

(47:35):
Uh you talked to us a few weeks, ago the
coach about like play calls and the names of the play,
calls but we really didn't talk about the play. Sheet
and maybe even more importantly from your, standpoint maybe the
evolution of the play sheet to what looks like a
waffle house menu from afar nowadays to maybe where it
was when you started coaching high. School give us kind

(47:57):
of the the evolution or the changing of the guard
in terms of your play. Sheet as you've kind of
grown in the, sport if you don't, Mind.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
Yeah you, Know and that's that's very. Unique and How
i'm going to describe this to our. Listeners and and you,
KNOW i know that the sheet THAT i would, carry
i'd put it on the hard backboard AND i was
able to write notes on it and all. That and
so there's a front and back to. Mine and it's

(48:25):
a sheet That i've had for. Years i've had it
in high school AND i tweaked it along the way
and tweaked it WHEN i got into. College and and,
really what what you do IS i always start off
with what's CALLED p and ten and that's the first
possession of a. Drive and with that, law and you're
going to get about twelve to fourteen p and ten's

(48:46):
in a. Game AND i know our audience is LIKE
p and ten, well and that first and, ten yes it.
Is but it's coming off the. Sidelines and So i'm
able to make maybe a longer play, call Maybe i'm
able to Make i'm able to Put Sammy watkins line
up at. Tailback Maybe i'm able to Put i'm able

(49:06):
to unique design a few players THAT i don't have
to signal anything IN i can tell them on the
sideline during the huddle before we break to the, side
break onto the. Field SO i really spend a lot
of time on my p in, tens even on when
only have twelve to fourteen of those in a. GAME
i really want those to be. UNIQUE i want them

(49:27):
to be. Creative AND i may have a defensive player
on the. FIELD i may, have you, know there may
be some different things that will do some funky formation
that it's hard to. Signal and then you get into
your basic pen of your basic first and ten calls
and really lowt in first and ten and second medium
are pretty much the same, calls so AND i usually

(49:49):
try to take in about eight to ten first and ten.
Calls now again there's inside zone then what we call
our inside, zones AND i mean those things are going
to carry. Over so it's not that it's not that the,
plays like every different series or every different scenario is

(50:11):
going to be a different. Play they're all for the
most part the same place through the course of the.
Game the, counters the, powers the quick, screens the curl flats,
game the vertical. Game so and you build that in you're, like, well,
okay in first intent and second MEDIUM i want to
have about you, KNOW i want to have six good

(50:32):
runs with unique, formations AND i may want to have
eight or nine, passes you know. Whatever and then so
first in ten and second medium is very much the.
Same and then you get into your second and, lungs
and then from second along your thought process is how
DO i get back to third and? Manageable SO i
want to GO i want to get to third and,

(50:52):
three third and. Four so really what DO i need
to do to create? That and a lot depends on field.
Position AM i on my own end of the field
and my only opponents into the? Field AM i very
AM i backed up into my own end? Zone so
those things play into consideration with. It and then so
all that's on my the first page that's on the

(51:14):
front of my play, sheet and and in that ALSO
i have, like, uh some you know, specials whether it's a,
reverse whether it's you, know just something. Unique can we
usually take three in a? Game three unique plays in a.
Game and also on the front of my play, SHEET
i have what's called my four minute. Offense so if

(51:36):
we're up at the end of the game and all
we need is the first down to, win, it there's
some there's some unique calls THAT i have therech also
have my two my two minute offenses in there, too
so you know how they plan us two minute wise and.
Uh and then you get to the back of the
page and and really, loton this is where when offenses

(51:57):
are rolling and when offenses are. Clicking this is usually
where it all takes. Place and it's in my third
down plan and and the WAY i break down my
calls That i'll go third and one to, two and
THEN i usually have about two calls for third and
one to two and a lot of times lost and
those are the same calls as fourth and one to.
Two and it could be also a play inside the

(52:20):
two yard, line you, know it could be one of
those that you take from it and put in. There
THEN i get into third and, three AND i usually
put third and three by itself BECAUSE i think it's
a unique. DOWN i think you can mix up some
run pass in third and. Three. Uh and then you
get to third and four to, six and then in
third and four to, SIX i usually try to take

(52:41):
three plays in three to four and it's you, know
two on each hash left hash right hash and maybe
one in the middle of, field and and then you
get into your third and seven to, ten and then
at that point your thought process on third and seven
to ten is is, okay are we going to go
for it on fourth? Down and those are the things

(53:03):
you need to know as a as a play caller
and of Coach. Wwen you would do a really good
job and, hey this is we're gonna go for it
here on fourth. Down well that's a third and seven
and knowing we're gonna probably go for it on fourth,
DOWN i don't have to get the whole thing. Right
IF i, do, great but let me get to fourth
and one and get my best fourth in one. Call.

(53:24):
Uh and then you get into the third and in
eleven Plus AND i always had a Saying lawton and
it was reserved the right to. Kick and a lot
of times it's play callers you get too greedy or
you you, know you try to get too cute and
and you wind up getting stoned or getting sacked when,

(53:45):
hey third and, eleven you know it may be a
good run play is not nothing wrong with third and?
Eleven or are sprint a guy out and throw out
in the flats and just and try to get to
maybe they make it and make a miss and miss
a tackle And i'm able to break it. Free but
but don't neglect the fact that it's okay to punt
the football if you're if you're in third and. Longish

(54:07):
so that's at the top of my play. Sheet AND
i know this is probably a lot of information that
maybe want to, hear don't want to. Hear but the
key to this thing is IS i had what's called.
Landmarks AND i know we talked about it a few weeks, ago,
right but my landmarks start WHEN i hit the fifty
yard line AND i would literally, go what call AM

(54:28):
i gonna make on the fifty yard line on the left,
Hash and it's it's more than likely it's going to
be a. Shot i'm gonna take a deep ball shot
down the. Field i'm gonna do a crazy motion and
take a. Shot it's it's what we did the other you,
know we talked about the other day of throwing our you,
KNOW i think we called it whatever we call little.
Rock and you know that those are the third you,

(54:51):
know fifty yard line left. Hash THEN i have something
totally different fifty yard line right. Hash and then and
THEN i go forty, five, forty, thirty, five, thirty AND
i will literally go, left hash, right hash on each
one of those, landmarks and what my best play action
shot calls down the. FIELD i firmly believe you got
to throw the ball down the. Field you have to

(55:11):
put the ball in the air twenty five yards or.
More it has to travel in the. Air and so
that's my. Landmarks and THEN i get into my red
zone AND i do the same. THING i go twenty,
five twenty, fifteen ten five and in goal line and
that's the way my play sheet is. Designed and THEN
i have my two point plays in my goal line.

Speaker 1 (55:32):
Plays now this might sound completely, ridiculous but in THAT
lsu game at the opening of the, season they ran
what appeared to me to be the exact same play
back to back to. BACK i, mean do you do
you run multiple times in a game the exact same.
Play you, say we're running display exactly again or is

(55:52):
it always?

Speaker 3 (55:53):
Unique? Well, NO i always felt, like you, know it's
it's common courtesy that if it, Worked i'm gonna see
if you can stop. It you, Know that's that's kind of.
WAY i always felt this common, courtesy and we would
have a call AND i and and whether it was
play it again or. Banjo you, know it may be
me looking Like I'm I'm i'm playing a. Piano well

(56:15):
that's a signal that means play it. Again or If
i'm picking a guitar that means play it, again that
means as fast as you can get lined. UP i
want to run the same play, wow and to see
IF i. Can't you, know only now this is me
only if THAT i had success on the MAYBE i
broke a twenty yard run and, HEY i want to

(56:36):
say if they can adjust before they make a make,
Substitution i'm gonna play it again and, boom we'll hit
banjo or eck we call it echo to where you,
know my my hands cupped over my. Ears so it's,
like you, know, hey let's let's hear it. Again, yeah
and so, yeah, yeah those are things that are.

Speaker 1 (56:54):
Unique, no that's that's so cool. Again Chad moore hanging
out with his following On twitter at Coach Chad, morris of,
course his Son, chandler and The Virginia cavaliers seventy one
on the. Season they are At cal this weekend three
forty five kickoff ON espn two and so let's take
it maybe a little bit, further because when you were At,
clemson it was still the days where you guys were

(57:16):
signaling in and there's a bunch of signs and all
kind of who knows what was going to show up
on the. Graphic and now they could communicate with the
quarterbacks in the. HELMET i, mean how does that kind
of change the game in your? Opinion from the offensive,
STANDPOINT i loved.

Speaker 3 (57:30):
IT i loved. It last year we were able to
talk to the. Quarterback you, know that was that was.
UNIQUE i think you can play. FASTER i THINK i
think that that the ability to do That lawton and
play faster is. Critical but here's a real critical thing
that probably not a lot of the listeners, know is
that so that that that communication, set communication device gets

(57:57):
turned off at the fifteen second. Mark SO i can't.
COMMUNICATE i couldn't communicate with a quarterback a year, ago
we couldn't at the fifteen. Second after fifteen, seconds but
if you're playing with great, tempo which is WHAT i
firmly believe you play with great, tempo you're able to
get lined up and get the play, called and you're

(58:19):
able to communicate with a. Quarterback you may have six
seconds to communicate with a quarterback and, go, okay it's quarters.
Coverage hey look to the, field or hey they're, rolling
they're fixing and bring field pressure that your throw is
going to be to the boundary and then it, beat, beat,
beat and then it cuts. Out and at least you're
able if If now again it's a big, if if

(58:41):
you're playing fast and getting lined. UP i love the
fact Because i'm able to at Least i'm at least
able To it's kind of like a multiple, choice you, know,
Test i'm at least able to cancel OUT a AND
c and give the quarterback being you, know you, know
UH b AND d. Option you know what?

Speaker 1 (58:58):
Is what else is interesting IS i feel like Now
i'm seeing more and more and this is WHERE i
guess you kind of it's a copycat. GAME i see
these defensive. Coaches, now everybody's wearing a different. Color they look,
like you, know some sort of KIDS tv. Show there's
a guy wearing, red a guy wearing, purple, yellow and.
GREEN i have no idea what's going, on but there's
on multiple sidelines, now And i'm, like what is? Happening

(59:22):
what is that? About do you know what these these
defensive coaches are.

Speaker 3 (59:26):
Doing, yeah you know that they get one communication device.
Too they're usually talking to the mic. Linebacker sometimes they
talk to a safety whicheveryone is they're a big, leader
and usually what's happening is is those guys are signaling
in the. Front, Okay and so there may be a
group that's looking at the guy in the green shirt
and he's signaling in the. Front there may be a

(59:47):
group that's looking at the red jersey or the red,
signaler and he may be signaling in the. Coverage if
they truly all look to the. Sidelines there's some teams
that communicate and to the linebacker and then just all
the backers and the secondary look to the side and
they're getting the coverage or any, check any check of a.

(01:00:11):
Defense and that's usually what's happening.

Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
There the chess match of college. Football so much fun
talking With Chad morris about it here on the. PROGRAM
i Guess i'll leave you with, this the coach and
the decision one one ear, muff two ear muffs when
you're on the, headset how did you handle? THAT i
honestly can't.

Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
Remember, NO i always had one AND i never like
to wear. Two i've tried to wear, two and it's
just it's like putting a set of noise cancelation headphones
on right and all you can. HEAR i can't stand.
THAT i gotta hear the. OUTSIDE i gotta, hear you.

(01:00:53):
KNOW i want to feel Like I'm i'm a. PART
i can get the feel of the. CROWD i get
the feel of the. Environment SO i always wore one
headset and one, earpiece and that was it BECAUSE i wanted,
to you, KNOW i wanted to be able to kind
of get the flow of the feel of the game

(01:01:13):
and yet still. Communicate.

Speaker 1 (01:01:15):
Man. Coach always great catching up with. YOU i wish
we had more than twenty. Minutes we definitely do, it
but we'll get you back on next week BECAUSE i
want to learn more about that chatter in the headset
and everything that goes on in between. PLAYS i know
our listeners do to as. Well, plus we got to
get some more insight into recruiting with you as, well
as you obviously have done that for, many many. Years,

(01:01:36):
Again He's Chad morris On twitter at Coach Chad Morse
go follow him. Today, Coach best of luck to, you
guys this weekend as you head out To berkeley for
that big matchup against the Cal.

Speaker 3 (01:01:45):
Bears, absolutely, WELL i appreciate. It and, yeah it'll be
interested next. WEEK i, mean you can definitely sell tickets
for the communication goes on the. Headset you, know that'd be.
GREAT i raise a lot of money that. Way but, hey, look,
no it's. Great and LIKE i, SAID i love My
Clemson clifton, group and it's wishing The tiger's the. Best
and hopefully The tigers can get them a good win

(01:02:05):
at home they needed and, uh and get The wahoo's
and win on the road they need it. Too and
and get back in here next week and we'll. Talk
we'll have a great talk.

Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
There he Is Chad morris. Coach have a great, week you,
Bet chad Wars. Man that's so. Awesome all, right it's
a hard time. Break we got to go stay with,
us rocking and rolling along with you on A, wednesday
Those Chad mors before the break out to the guest,
line we got DOUBLE o joints the program Double oh what's?

Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Up?

Speaker 4 (01:02:33):
Man oh, Man i'm getting bummed. Out i'm really don't
follow what's going.

Speaker 5 (01:02:43):
On i'm TRUCK i listen just about every, Day.

Speaker 4 (01:02:46):
Lowton But i'll tell you WHAT i picked up from
lately from your. SHOW i think your idea is to
get a coach to sign a contract for a meal
and let the rest of it go to paying the.

Speaker 5 (01:03:05):
Players is that what you AM i picking up what
you're putting.

Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
DOWN i think you smell When i'm. Shoveling And i'm
not talking about It clemson. Necessarily i'm just talking about in.
General why doesn't the? Coach How, OKAY i thought about this,
today double LOW i don't think our world really needs
anybody with more than one billion. DOLLARS i think a
billion should be the. Max LIKE i can't imagine that

(01:03:30):
somebody needs one hundred, billion so a billion should be the.
Max but maybe a coach should have the same attitude and,
say you know, what a million's. GOOD i can live
off of that and put the other ten towards my. Roster, Please, okay.

Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
My rebuttal IS i if somebody can't take a million
dollars and LIVE i mean at, birth and have those
funds invested in some kind of savings, account live off
that for the rest of their. Lives that individual has

(01:04:08):
got an accounting and math problem BECAUSE i could do
it IF i with hands of a million WHEN i
was a, TEENAGER i.

Speaker 5 (01:04:16):
CAN i can live off that for the rest.

Speaker 1 (01:04:18):
Of my life very. Comfortably so if you're a, coach
take very little, money go to these big schools and
SAY i especially like the the The Jimbo fisher when
it is obvious, DUDE a AND m has to pay
him seven point two million dollars a year and it
doesn't matter if he gets a new. Job so his

(01:04:41):
old school is paying, him he should take a dollar
to go work at AT.

Speaker 4 (01:04:46):
Lsu, YEAH i pick up what you putt that's insane
amount of. Money but the bottom line, Is, lawton do
you think that there's any coach out there.

Speaker 5 (01:04:58):
That would lot? That what are the percentage and chances
of a coach doing?

Speaker 1 (01:05:03):
THAT i would think a smart one would do you know?
What you know? WHAT i? Know Chad, morris we just
had him on the. Program But i'm putting that on
my notes for next. Week i'm gonna Ask.

Speaker 5 (01:05:13):
Dad see If Chad. Chad let's see If. Chad i'll
talk to him. Too let's Get chad to take that.

Speaker 1 (01:05:20):
Offer take a million dollars and that's all you need
who needs more than.

Speaker 4 (01:05:28):
That next, week when you Get chad, on you can
put put put a.

Speaker 1 (01:05:33):
Three way on the.

Speaker 5 (01:05:34):
Double, oh we'll get him hooked.

Speaker 1 (01:05:36):
Up, okay hey Double oh, listen speaking the three, ways
how about the three point basketball coming back next? WEEK
i know you love Your Brad, BROWN ll talk to.
Me you KNOW.

Speaker 5 (01:05:49):
I i'm Not i'm not.

Speaker 4 (01:05:52):
COMMIDENT i will not comment ON Bb, no, no, sir
not gonna do.

Speaker 5 (01:05:57):
IT i would have had a great day until you
rolled up THE bb.

Speaker 3 (01:06:01):
Name oh my, GOD.

Speaker 4 (01:06:06):
I will say one thing you want me to talk,
About i'll say one. Thing they does look like they've
recruited a big. Guy, okay so that might help. Them
that's ALL i got to. Say they, listen they got
to tell me about this big.

Speaker 5 (01:06:21):
Guy tell me about this big guy to seven? Point
didn't they got? To didn't they recruise seven?

Speaker 1 (01:06:25):
Footer, well they've got several six foot ten ish guys
that three or four of them can shoot from the.
Perimeter they're pretty, versatile and that's the THING i think
they could cause some. Problems that's that's what they.

Speaker 4 (01:06:43):
Need that's what they've been lacking all these years UNDER.
Bb no big man to control the. Paint if you
can't control the, paint you can't.

Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
Win you didn't LIKE. Pj.

Speaker 4 (01:06:52):
Haw he he didn't control the paint like a tree.
Roller And i'm talking about a big guy that's just
good on offense and defense and you can't push him
out in the. Way you can push that guy. Around
you're talking about P. J. Hall, yeah he kept pushed,
around but he Was you're, right he was a great.

(01:07:15):
Player but He you've got to have more than one,
guy like you, said they've got they got a two
or three coming in so that they might if they
can control the, paint they can win double.

Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
O this weekend will shift back the basketball back the
football real. Quick but it's a basketball. School The Duke
Blue devel's coming to. Town what do you? THINK i,
mean you give the?

Speaker 5 (01:07:36):
Chance my prediction is that what you're asking me to?

Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
SCORE i, mean if you, Want.

Speaker 4 (01:07:46):
I'd rather not make a prediction on the score BECAUSE
i don't know that much About.

Speaker 5 (01:07:50):
DUKE i WOULD i would have to investigate in their
team and do some research on their team BEFORE i
gave you a. Prediction BUT i think he gets a
toss Up lawton who wins that?

Speaker 1 (01:08:02):
Games favorite three and a Half duke's three and. One
though in THE acc clympses two and, Three Blue devils
are four and three Overall clemson three and.

Speaker 4 (01:08:11):
Four, Well i'll take the three With Duke dan if
that's the.

Speaker 5 (01:08:14):
Line IF i was, betting, man that's WHAT i.

Speaker 1 (01:08:16):
Do, YEAH i TAKE i take.

Speaker 5 (01:08:21):
The three And Duke duke plus. Three, Yeah i'll take
that any.

Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
Day double. Oh have a great, weekend, man enjoy the.

Speaker 5 (01:08:30):
Game always enjoy talking with.

Speaker 3 (01:08:33):
You.

Speaker 5 (01:08:33):
Lowton you have a good day and a great.

Speaker 4 (01:08:37):
Weekend and, Hallelujah god bless you and Go god Bless.

Speaker 1 (01:08:42):
America there you, Go God Bless. America double o. Again
This Clemson tiger team will take on The Duke Blue
Devils saturday at. NOON acc. Network we did find out
this Week clemson In florida say it'll be a night

(01:09:03):
game in The valley next. Weekend we don't know the network,
yet and we got a PLETHORA, ESPN espn two or
THE acc. Network and then the next week clemsones on
the road At. Louisville that's A friday night affair at seven.
Thirty it's speaking Of friday night, affairs the possibility of

(01:09:29):
A Palmeadow bowl on A friday. Night i'm getting. LISTEN
i can't thumbs this down. ENOUGH i don't have enough
thumbs to thumbs this thing. Down we'll tell you the
conversations about, it not this coming season when they're back
At clemson next, year, right but the next time they

(01:09:50):
come back To. Columbia could this thing be played On Black?
Friday i'm not. Sure i'm down with. That lawton swan
with you on A wednesday. Afternoons so if you've heard
a little conversation About clemson And South carolina potentially playing
on A Black, friday here's. Why Chapel fowler Of The

(01:10:14):
State newspaper posted a copy of the agreement Between clemson
And South carolina about the future series contract and for
the twenty twenty seventh season At South. Carolina there's a

(01:10:34):
little caveat or an area where it says that the
game will be played On saturday or On Black. Friday
and so naturally when that comes, up people begin to
discuss the thoughts of. IT i don't like it because

(01:10:55):
of the fact that this is would be The friday After,
thanksgiving and, that to me is the thing THAT i
really would not. Like And i'm sure there's even more to,
it but that's the number one for.

Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
Me.

Speaker 1 (01:11:18):
Now last, YEAR espn and THE acc Approached clemson about
moving their game Against South carolina To Black, friday the
day After, thanksgiving But clemson shot that idea. Down but
at the, time he also said he had no problem
With South carolina hosting the game On Black, Friday sweeny

(01:11:43):
saying at the, time, quote our students go home For
thanksgiving and they get a chance to travel back On
friday to create a great, atmosphere and an atmosphere is
a great environment and atmosphere for us On, saturday as
opposed to having to leave On Thanksgiving day and not
be with their. Families they want to come back and
go the, Game sweeney said before last year's. Game so

(01:12:06):
there are a lot of, reasons but one of the
main reasons for me is what is best for this
community and what's best for our program when it comes
to recruiting and getting people here and all those. Things,
now Will Van, dervoort who will join us On, Friday
he brought up the fact that he feels like What
clemson In South carolina should do is bring Back Big

(01:12:29):
thursday and just say we'll be happy to compete against
THE nfl and be the only college game in town
on A. Thursday, Now and, LOOK i don't. KNOW i
Think will put the date Of october twenty, first twenty twenty.
Seven my guess is he Meant november twenty. First october

(01:12:54):
twenty first is A. Thursday BUT i struggle to imagine
That clemson In South carolina fans would want to play
that game In. October BUT i guess if you could
get a consensus and get an, audience they might be

(01:13:16):
willing to do. It it's JUST i like it being
the final game of the. Season BUT i think The
Moniker Big thursday coming, back and maybe regardless of the
date in or the date of the calendar when you
played the part of the season that you, play it
might still get some people excited about. It Dabos sweeney
was actually asked about. IT i didn't see it In
Shane beemer's press conference, today BUT i didn't watch the whole.

(01:13:38):
Thing But Dabos sweeney was asked about the possibility of
The Palmeto bowl being played On Black friday in the. Future, yeah,
YEAH i.

Speaker 6 (01:13:46):
MEAN i don't. Know you, know they've asked me about
that here many. Times i've always voted for it On saturday.
Here that's my vote for a lot of reasons THAT
i won't get back. Into we just need to be
duke this. Week so but if they want to move,
it that's up to.

Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
Them so not shooting it down if it's not In, clemson,
right not shooting not shooting it down if it's not In.
CLEMSON i feel like for a few, years The Egg,
bowl that's the matchup Between Old miss And Mississippi, state
was played On Thanksgiving, day AND i remember tuning in

(01:14:27):
and watching. That AND i know THE nfl has expanded
Their Thanksgiving day coverage to include three, games BUT i
do think there's a sub section of the fans nationally
that would absolutely watch a college football game between rivals

(01:14:48):
On Thanksgiving day as, well and The Egg bowl might
be back On Thanksgiving day at this, POINT i truly
do not. Know i'd have to look that. Up but
moving Into, October i'm a little wary of that one quite,
frankly BUT i guess that might be what the original

(01:15:08):
date when that thing was not the original, date but
around the time perhaps did that was, played you, Know Big,
thursday was that like the Third thursday In? October or.
SOMETHING i, mean you, know if you kind of pitched
it like that and built it up over a decade or,
two maybe people would really get into. It but even,
Then i'm not sure That Dabo sweeney would want to

(01:15:32):
have that be the thing In clemson A thursday game
middle of the. SEASON i, MEAN i remember a couple
of times in my life where there Were thursday games
At clemson because you had a contract WITH espn and THE,
acc AND i remember how people felt about Those thursday.
Games they did not love. Them it was always weird

(01:15:54):
around campus because you, know the university was still. Going,
now if the university partidticipated in it and made it
like the beginning of fall, break That thursday night game
being the last day before you go onto like a
fall break or, something, maybe but there's no, doubt you,

(01:16:16):
know with the things we've seen in my time on
the air here in The, midlands with the changes we've,
seen the college football lord At Mercy clemson In South
carolina playing on A thursday night again or on A
friday night would not be at or near the top

(01:16:36):
of the big. Changes, seriously and speaking of, seriously stop
by our friends At Alumna hall, seriously when you're in,
town Downtown, clemson right there on the corner of, campus
just across From Bowmen, field stones throw away from historic Riggs. Field,
literally if the light sort of go out on the

(01:16:58):
front porch Of Alumni, hall Riggs field's lights would keep
plenty of light on the. Venue that's how close it
is to. Campus go check them out, today all your
officially Licensed clempson, merchandise, HATS t, shirts tailgate gear and.
More love Those nike Drive hit polos so comfortable and good. Looking,

(01:17:20):
Also clemson students faculty in all military get tempercent Off
onen shop again. Store go check them out. Today Alumni
hall Where tiger fans. Shop our final segment we'll put
a bow on The wednesday edition right after. This what
have you done for me? Lately it's a fair. Question
just don't lose sight of the bigger. Picture don't forget.

(01:17:44):
History lucky for us At, clemson the answer to the
questions what have you done for me? Lately and what
have you? Done always are the. Same we win final

(01:18:48):
segment on A. Wednesday Clemson sports tal And swan hanging
out with you. Again thank you The Chad morris for
joining us. Earlier, dude those segments are. Amazing SO i
was taking a look at some of the best women's
basketball players because obviously we talked about the recruiting That

(01:19:10):
clempson is doing Under Shown, poppy and while those young
ladies aren't on campus, YET i did want to kind
of go in and take a, gander you, know just
to SEE espn put up a top twenty five players.
List And i'd be lying to you IF i SAID
i expected to dive in and see A Clempson, tiger

(01:19:31):
BUT i did expect to See South carolina Game. Cock,
Now gamecock fans have become accustomed to having top tier
talent on the hardwood for the, women And Tenaya, latson

(01:19:51):
a senior guard At South carolina who averaged twenty five
point two points per game a year ago while playing
At Florida, state a, transfer checks in at the number
seven spot. Nationally they've also got a Forward Joyce, edwards
who averaged twelve point seven points per game in five

(01:20:12):
rebounds a game check it in at number. Eleven South
carolina's women's basketball, team again Under Don, staley certainly one
of the best in the. Country two of the top
twenty five players In america and the top player coming
via the transfer portal in women's. Basketball SO i mean this,

(01:20:35):
thing this, portal, Man it's. Everywhere and that leads us
to our final topic of the day here on the.
Program game five of The World series gets underway tonight
at eight o'clock On. Fox The dodgers of The Blue
jays tied it To both teams have now gone on

(01:20:58):
the road and won a, game making this a three
game series at this, point and whoever wins tonight will
take what will certainly feel like a fairly commanding. Lead
now if it is The Blue, jays Major League baseball
uses that two three to two, format meaning The, jays

(01:21:20):
if they win to, night will have potentially two home
games to try to win their First World series since
the early. Nineties and for The, dodgers if they win,
tonight they'll have two road games to try to go
back to back for the first. TIME i think since
The yankees pulled that beat off The dodgers last. Night

(01:21:43):
you got a pretty good workout the. Show, Hey asani
on the bump got deemed up in the seventh inning
after about ninety semi. Pitches, man he was still dealing
at like ninety nine miles an, hour but maybe stayed
out a little bit too long and that caught up with.
Him o'tani was out of the game and The dodgers

(01:22:07):
would fall behind six to, two giving up four runs
in that. Inning otani takes the, loss the final score
six to. Two last, night it Was Vlad Guerrero vladdie
leading the way. Man he's been hot this, postseason and
it was the top of the third, inning trailing one to.

(01:22:28):
Oh he caught one From otani right over the plate
and mashed. It and you, know there's something like when
you're a pitcher and you give up one of, those you,
know just a. BOMB i wouldn't call that a, bomb
but when you give up a shot that you know is,
Gone i'm sure it's a as a. Picture it's a

(01:22:51):
bad feeling when you show hey A tani and you
know what it's like to hit. One, yes it is
a bad, feeling but there's probably a part of you that,
goes holy cal that was a. Swing, like there's probably
a appreciation for what the other guy just, did the
way the other guy just mashed at the. Plate and

(01:23:14):
so tonight somebody's gonna get a decided. ADVANTAGE i mean
The dodgers are at. Home The dodgers feel like WHEN
i watch, them they feel like the better, team AND
i do wonder this for really both sides of this.

(01:23:34):
Matchup one THING i do wonder is how much that
eighteen inning, game how Much game three actually impacts, today
BECAUSE i don't know. THAT i, mean, look a lot
of these guys are running on adrenaline at this point,
anyway imagine they're not sleeping. Great BUT i do kind

(01:23:57):
of think, about like how you feel after a couple
of days of being really, busy and so essentially they've
played because it was an eighteen inning, game these two
teams have played three games, already, right this is sort
of like game four in a three game span or

(01:24:18):
a three day. Span AND i wonder if this is
the one where we're starting to see it catch up with,
somebody not necessarily in particular in like the pitching, staff
but somebody in the, field somebody not able to make
a play that maybe they would normally cause they don't
have quite the pep in their step that they would have.
Had that's WHERE i think my focus would. Be BUT
i believe tomorrow we will be talking about The dodgers

(01:24:40):
being up three games to. Two we'll see If i'm
right until, Then as, always y'all take care now and Go.
