Zembla Podcast: Op zoek naar Marlotte
In het najaar van 2020 krijgt Annika contact met de 13-jarige Marlotte. Marlotte ligt met ernstige brandwonden in het ziekenhuis, heeft een verleden van seksueel misbruik en is door iedereen in de steek gelaten. Annika heeft ruim drie jaar dagelijks contact met haar via whatsapp: eerst met Marlotte zelf, en als Marlotte niet meer kan communiceren, met het ziekenhuis. Tot Marlotte in 2023 op 16-jarige leeftijd helemaal alleen overlijdt. Alleen Annika is bij haar, ze luistert mee via de telefoon. Tenminste, dat is wat Annika denkt. Na het overlijden van Marlotte, wil Annika weten wat er met haar is gebeurd en komt in contact met Zembla. Wij gaan het verhaal uitzoeken, maar we komen we er gaandeweg achter dat het verhaal heel anders in elkaar zit, en dat Annika jarenlang op een bizarre, ingenieuze en gruwelijke manier voor de gek is gehouden. En wij worden daar ook in meegezogen. Want Marlotte heeft nooit bestaan.
