19 марта мэр Стамбула Экрем Имамоглу и несколько десятков его сторонников были задержаны по подозрению в коррупции.
Имамоглу называют главным соперником президента Турции Реджепа Эрдогана. Задержание мэра по подозрению во взяточничестве произошло за несколько дней до партийного съезда, на котором Имамоглу должны были назвать кандидатом в президенты на выборах 2028 года (что в итоге и произошло).
Уголовное преследование Имамоглу вызвало масштабные акции протеста в турецких городах, которые продолжаются до сих пор и сопровождаются массовыми задержаниями.
