Одним из самых страшных символов войны в Украине стала Буча. Этот город, расположенный неподалеку от Киева, с начала марта оказался в оккупации. Когда в конце месяца российская армия ушла, на местных улицах, во дворах домов и в братских могилах обнаружили сотни погибших мирных жителей, многих со следами пыток. Кадры из города разлетелись по всему миру, но Кремль продолжает отрицать причастность российских военных к убийствам, называя резню в Буче инсценировкой властей Украины и западных СМИ.
Еще один печальный символ войны — город-порт Мариуполь на берегу Азовского моря, центр металлургии Донецкой области. Он также с первых дней конфликта попал в российскую осаду. Весной в результате постоянных бомбежек город фактически стерли с лица земли, а большинство его жителей стали беженцами. Авиаудары по городскому роддому и драмтеатру называются в числе главных военных преступлений России в ходе вторжения. Сейчас территория Мариуполя формально аннексирована РФ. В Москве уже активно строят планы по восстановлению города.
Украинская журналистка Ирина Олегова, уроженка Мариуполя, живущая в Киеве, по просьбе «Медузы» съездила этой осенью в Бучу и поговорила с местными жителями о том, как восстанавливается город. Также в подкасте «Текст недели» она рассказывает, что ей известно о происходящем сейчас в ее родном городе. Весной на «Медузе» выходил репортаж Олеговой о блокаде Мариуполя.
