What's going on? I'm rich Dmiro. This is Rich on Tech.
If you've listened to this podcast for any period of time,
you're probably familiar with the fact that I've written a book.
Months ago in the summer, I released it as an
e book. It was called one hundred and one Handy
Tech Tips for the iPhone. But one of the biggest

questions I got when I released that e version of
it was where is the Android version? Well, okay, I
didn't really answer that one yet, but the other question
I got was where is the paperback version? And I'm
happy to announce that, yes, one hundred and one Handy
Tech Tips for the iPhone is now available in paperback
on Amazon. So let me answer the other question about Android. So, yes,

I love Android just as much as I love the iPhone.
The problem with Android is that there are so many
phone specific versions of the software. So let's say I
wrote it for Samsung. Well, anyone who has a Pixel
wouldn't be happy. Let's say I wrote it for the Pixel.
Anyone has a Samsung wouldn't be happy. If I wrote
it for Samsung. People with LG's wouldn't be happy, or motorolas.
So I've got to figure out a way to do
maybe a very popular version of Android, like say the

Samsung SAS nine and maybe the Note nine. That's my
thought in the future. But that's not what I'm talking
about today. Today is all about iPhone. So I went
back through the book and I added new tips and
all the great new features in iOS twelve. Then I
went back and revised the rest of the tips so
that they're even simpler to understand. I got a lot
of feedback from the first book, but I even had

to cut some of the tips out of the book,
which was really tough for me. This is not a
book for the power user, although after you read it
you will feel like one. This is a book for
the everyday person. Remember I'm on TV stations around the nation,
radio podcast. I get a lot of questions about the iPhone.
It's right up there with how do I cut the cord?
And what should I name my baby? Well, okay, nobody
asked me that last one, but if you're curious, I

have some thoughts on that. One hundred and one hand

iOS twelve, like how to create a memoji that looks
just like you, how to take control of your notifications.
Think about it before, who would ever take the time
to go into settings and tweak notifications for every individual app? Well, now,
if an app is bugging you, you can just swipe
left on one of its notifications, hit that new managed button,

and you can have them delivered without any sort of sound,
or just turn them off completely. It's so easy. It's
stuff like that that I talk about in the book.
I also show you how to set up screen time,
which can be powerful. It can reveal just how much
you're picking up your phone and which apps you're using
the most. You can also limit the time you get
to use certain apps or categories of apps each day. Personally,
I'm trying to limit the amount of time that I

spend walking and looking at my phone. That's a big
thing I want to do in twenty nineteen. So if
you see me walking and looking at my phone, just
give me a little pat in the back and say, Rich,
come on, you gotta stick with it. Now. Your kids
are gonna hate this, but you can also control their
phones and iPads right from yours. Now they have this
new feature called family limits under screen time. This is fantastic.
You can even make it so they get a certain
(02:52):
amount of time each day for Netflix and games, and
then after that time's up, those apps will not work
until the next day. Or they can request there's a
time extension from you, which you can approve right from
your Apple Watch or your phone or your iPad. Or
you can do what I do and just deny it.
By the way, one hundred and one handy tech tips
focuses on what you can accomplish on the iPhone without

adding a bunch of new apps. This is all native functionality,
with the exception of one tip, which has to do
with ways and Google Maps in CarPlay. I show you
how to turn your iPhone into a virtual measuring tape
with the new augmented reality app called Measure. I show
you how to set up AUTOFIL passwords, which you definitely need. Yes,
your phone can create strong passwords and store them for you.

It can even log into your apps for you. You
can find this feature under Settings then Passwords and Accounts
than AUTOFILL passwords, Group FaceTime can now accommodate up to
thirty two people at once, although every time I try
this with my family members they never answer, so hope
you have lots of friends to try this out with.

me some new tricks that even I didn't know about.
I love hearing that you're gonna get so much more
out of your phone, like setting up the all important

medical ID. This let's first responders access critical information about
your health and even dial your loved ones without having
to unlock your phone. This is sort of like setting
up an ice contact a couple years back, but this
is so much better. I walk you through the process
of setting this up in the health app. You can
look for it under the medical ID tab at the bottom.
My wife started reading a advanced copy of the book

and she texted me, Oh my gosh, I love the
tip about the medical ID. I already set it up
and I was like, cool, very good. And there's so
much more. I mean, there are one hundred and one
handy tech tips in all, but don't tell anyone there's
actually one hundred and two. There's a final tip that
tells you how to reset settings on your phone in
case something's wonky or factory restore. That's like the whole
thing is erased if you want to sell it. And

did you know there's even a setting that will rearrange
your home home screen to the way it looked out
of the box, then put all of the rest of
your apps in alphabetical order. Now, personally, this would be
a nightmare scenario for me, as I've spent a lot
of time dealing with those wiggly apps and arranging them
just so. But you never know. You're gonna love learning
these tips and sharing your newfound knowledge with your friends.
I'm gonna show you some old favorites, like how to

turn your iPhone into a magnifying glass, probably one of
the most popular tips I've ever shown on TV and Facebook.
You can find that feature in the Accessibility settings. I
also show you the secret way to erase one calculator digit. Well,
it's not that much of a secret, just wipe left
or right on a digit after you type it. You
can also learn how to have your phone say who's
calling out loud? Stop those annoying Wi Fi pop ups,

and learn the fastest way that I know how to
see which movies and TV shows are actually downloaded your device,
which involves opening the TV app and just flipping your
phone into airplane mode. Did you know that you can
scan documents into PDFs? Just start a new note and
hit the plus sign above the keyboard to see the
option to scan, and you could even add your signature
in markup. Your iPhone can even store your signals. You

can easily sign documents over and over. One final tip
I think you'll really enjoy how to close all of
your open Safari tabs at once. Just open Safari, then
press and hold the overlapping box icons in the lower
right hand corner of your screen. You'll then see an
option to close all open tabs, along with the number
of tabs you have open. And when I showed this
tip on TV, oh my gosh, I got so many

emails for a few months from excited folks telling me
how many tabs they had open and how they loved
feeling so efficient in closing them all. One hundred and
