Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Monday morning, Welcome in Happy Thanksgiving Week. It is
Coffee and Company and we are fueled by Thornton's here
at news Radio eight forty whas Thanksgiving Week is here
and we're here Nick Coffee. That's me, Scott Fitzgerald and
a couple of John's, John Alden, John Shannon with you.
And I see that Thanksgiving week is expected to have
a record breaking amount of people traveling. And what we
(00:23):
can we can talk through it throughout the week, and
of course we've got some data. I'm sure they can
help us out. But what about this Thanksgiving do you
guys think would make it a well, Okay, I've never
traveled before, or it's a rarity, but I got I
gotta get the hell out of wherever I'm at.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Are you talking about it?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
It's just what would make me travel? Eighty two million
people are traveling, it's gonna be a record. Why now,
why this Thanksgiving? What about this year twenty twenty five
is going to make people say they got to go
somewhere else?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
It seems like it always goes up every year.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
It's almost like, oh no, Dad, I would say otherwise, Scott, right, Yeah,
it just seems like it doesn't so like after COVID, Yeah,
like the A twenty twenty one I think might have
been it was. I looked at it, and again there's
no real roalm or reason as far as you know,
an there's no proof as to why people are doing it.
But I don't know. I say this because I'm actually gonna,
for the first time ever, have a different day of Thanksgiving,
(01:14):
because I have family that's decided to travel. And you know,
I'm not I'm not bitter about it. I'm just I'm
just bitter about it.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
You know, I noticed when I took my steps yesterday morning,
I was walking through the neighborhood, and I know it's
a few more cars or that aren't usually in the
neighborhood are parked outside. Maybe kids are home from school
they're off school this week, or families in town. I
even noticed a couple of folks had their garage doors
open with their cars opening back in suitcases in the truck.
So I think everybody's hitting the road early to your
point this year. I just, in fact, I got a
(01:41):
text from my mom last night. They're going to make
it down. They're coming through here. So I think maybe
more people are traveling getting started earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Interesting to see the number of schools that are off
all week in some that are going really days.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I wasn't aware of any of any that were off
all week, but that's that's heck. Yeah, if you're a kid,
it's an added that's it week vacation essentially.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
I was talking to a couple of administrators and they said, yeah,
they opted to go for that route because they found
out in recent years that families were taking the whole
week off and their attendance went down.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Since my kids have been in school, the Wednesday has
been a day that they don't go to school, but
usually Monday and Tuesday, which, of course I mean, like
like a lot of us adults that work, I'm sure
just like us, students and teachers may be mailing in
in a couple of days this week just because hey
it's two days, it's a holiday. I'm sure you're not
going to get the most productive two days. But we'll see.
(02:33):
There's some numbers eighty two million travelers. As I mentioned,
the FAA expects thirty three hundred and sixty thousand flights
this week alone, So Tuesday tomorrow is projected to be
the busiest air travel day with fifty two thousand flights scheduled.
So yeah, that sounds like hell on Earth being at
an airport over these next few days. But I wish
you the best of luck.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Well you imagine, imagine what TSA lines are.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Going to look like. Yeah, and I'm thinking, I'm glad
I'm staying home.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
So do you do the pre check if you're going
t S if?
Speaker 1 (03:01):
I so it would probably work out fine. But if
I was traveling on a day via airline where I
see that it's going to be that busy, I would
just like I just would assume I'm going to show
up and like, hey, whatever happens happens, like we might,
we might, we might leave today, we might not. Somebody
might get drunk and get arrested. That's not the behavior
that that that we would typically have. But obviously airports
(03:23):
can turn people into versions of themselves they didn't know
exist that I've I've seen it many times. So best
luck to those traveling. But Thanksgiving week Thanksgiving is awesome.
As somebody who is not opposed to putting up the
Christmas tree pre Thanksgiving, I want to be clear because
a lot of the Thanksgiving superheroes out there that feel
the need to defend it doesn't mean I don't love
it and I'm excited to eat. It's actually as far
as the schedule, it's the best holiday we have because you,
(03:45):
I mean Friday. I've been fortunate to where I don't
think I've ever really had a job where Friday was
a it was a day we had to work. And
that's also that's that's one of the reasons why I
love It's like, you know, if you know you're getting
a four day week, and essentially you know, no matter when,
no matter what, no matter what. Christmas of course, can
be any day of the week, Thanksgiving is not. So
we've got the consistent four day weekend for most and
(04:08):
it is maybe the best four days seemingly of sports.
It is especially for what we love around here because
NFL obviously is going to get I mean NFL is
it dominates on Thanksgiving. But college basketball has become a
really good it's a really good the week of Thanksgiving
more than anything. Thanksgiving Day, there's not as many games,
but just during the four day break that we get,
there's a lot of good hoops on and well.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
It started it started Friday. There was there was some
good basketball in this past Friday.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Fast Week is what they call it. But it started
a little bit early, to your point, and that's that's
something we can maybe get into later. But there's so
many of these multi team tournaments now that are just
built to help give more money to the players, because
that's the name of the game. Now, find a way
to where you can sell Hey, come here, we'll get
you more money. And as many have learned, including one
basketball team in the state, having all that money may
(04:54):
not necessarily may not necessarily work out. I mean, you
know you can have it, but you know how you
spend it. That's the that's the real important factors.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Well, more tournaments in hotels. I was watching one in
the Greenbrier.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
We can they'll throw a court down at the ball
room anywhere Virginia in.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
The ground, Like, where is that? Because it looks like
an old time.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
The Virginia I know exactly which which tournament you're talking about.
I don't know where it was, but we were in
Sinci on Friday after the Louisville game and they had
one of those games up on TV at the bar
we were at. I mean, it looked as if they
were playing in an auditorium except like a high school
or something. Yeah, very odd, very odd. The aesthetics were
very odd to watch that game, right, All right, let's
get it started. Showy, a busy, busy morning. We've got
a lot to get to, including some more updates from
(05:34):
jcps IS. They're they're making some changes that have parents upset.
In fact, any change you make is a school district,
like you have to know there's gonna be people that
are mad. This one those seems to be one that
has everybody mad. So we'll get to that and a
lot more so I hope you stick with us again.
Happy Thanksgiving week, Happy Monday to you. It's Coffee and
(05:55):
Company and we are fueled about Thornton's right here and
news Radio eight forty whas. That's right, it's a Monday
morning here at news Radio eight forty whas Coffee and Company.
That's us and we are fueled by Thornton's. Don't forget
about the three dollars combo, a donut and a cup
of coffee, just three bucks at Thornton's. But they've got
a lot of options when it comes to breakfast, so
keep them in mind and make sure if you have
(06:17):
not yet. You sign up to be a Refreshing Rewards member.
You'll save money at the pump every time you fill up,
and you've got a chance to save up to twenty
cents off per gallon once per week. So again, Refreshing
Awards dot com. That's the website. You can download the app.
It's free. You'll be happy that you did so. Last
week we found out JCPS they're closing. They're closing a
couple of schools, moving, relocating one and consolidating I believe
(06:39):
a couple. And my first thought was, Okay, this is
clearly a move that is unavoidable when it comes to
the massive deficit they have. But I had then thought, Okay,
how much could this how much could this actually save?
Right like when you close down two schools and make
(06:59):
these other changes, you know how you know how much
money we are we talking about here? And I had
no clue. I'll be honest with you. I wasn't as
if I was going to be able to ballpark what
kind of savings they were looking at by those moves made.
But it didn't put much of a dent. I mean,
we're talking about one hundred and eighty eight million dollar deficit.
They've got to get rid of a believe just between
one thirty and one thirty two million. And this this, this,
(07:23):
this change announced last week that's going to start, I
believe next seat next year, they're going to save roughly
four million dollars. So but they could have more savings
expected throughout selling property and whatnot and then reducing the
positions at those schools. But I mean that's a drop
in the bucket, right, I mean, I think doctor Yearwood,
(07:45):
the superintendent of JCPS, even acknowledged that. So still more
moves to be made. And if you're going to you know, look,
you got to you got to trim here and there
and just kind of see what we're you know, see
how much you're able to tack off here and there.
But I feel like if you're gonna en if you're
going to be closing schools, maybe you figure out how
(08:06):
many you're going to close in total before you make
it public. So maybe maybe maybe this is the well,
let's be real, nothing's off the table. I think we
know that, right. I Mean, I'm not even sure if
they know exactly how much of a devas that they
truly have, which is not something I say to to
make a poor attempt at a joke. That's just that
they've had to They've had to find people that can
accurately tell them just how much of a mess they're
(08:28):
actually in. But regardless, nothing really would shock us when
you consider that the things they're going to have to
do in order to get yourself out of this financial hole. However,
I just feel like if it was me, if I
was a teacher, an administrator, a parent, certainly I would
just be thinking, Okay, I see where my kids school
or where where I teach at where it falls as
far as the the amount of money it costs per
(08:51):
student to send a kid to school each day, we
are we on the radar to to potentially be be cut.
So again, I would think you would you would announce
all the school closures at once, just so everybody knows
and it's not, you know, a blow by blow kind
of thing. But if you were to tell me there
was a reason you couldn't do that because you're just
gradually making moves here and there to try to eliminate
(09:13):
one hundred and thirty two million dollars, that would make
sense to me too. So also, what we'll get to
a little later on this This is something that has
got a lot of pushback from from parents, understandably so,
and that is moving school start times up twenty minutes
earlier for all schools, and that that's something that's got
to be approved by the board. But still that that
that was met with a lot of pushback from from parents,
(09:36):
understandably So it's going to impact your schedule, your routine.
But look, they got they got to. Look, if I
was a JCPS parent, I would just prepare for the unexpected,
because when you consider just the situation they're in from
a financial standpoint, as I've said many times, what's what's
off the table? What move could be made that you
(09:56):
would be shocked by? And I guess everybody's different when
it comes to that. But when you really consider the
overall mess they're in, I mean, they got to get
rid of a lot of money, and they just decided
to close two schools, consolidate a couple, relocate a couple,
and they only put four million dollars. They only cut
four million dollars into that deficit. All right, let's get
(10:17):
to a trafficking weather update. Looks like it's gonna be
a rather warm day for late November, we're getting your
sixty degrees, but Matt Melosa Bitch will give us the details.
We'll check on the traffic with Bobby Ellis and a
sports updates coming your way as well. Right here at
news radio eight forty whas Good Monday Morning, Kentucky, and
it is Kentucky and is Morning News, Coffee and Company.
(10:37):
We are fueled by Thornton's appreciate you hanging out with us.
We're gonna have Roy O'Neil join us coming up in
about ten minutes. Looking forward to our morning chat with
mister Rory. Also, if you guys would like to chime
in share some thoughts with us, you can do it. Questions, complaints, compliments, insults,
whatever you've got, feel free to send them our way.
That is courtesy of the talkback Line. So if you
(10:57):
listen to us on the iHeartRadio app, which a reminder,
you can and you can take us with you wherever
you go. You can also listen live at whas dot com.
So on the iHeartRadio app, if you click the microphone
button that is that is right there on the screen
when you're streaming us, it will prompt you and and
ask if it can have access to your microphone, so
you can then record something so you can tell us
(11:17):
whatever you want. You got thirty seconds and it doesn't
give you any kind of a warning. So sometimes we'll
have folks that will use the talk back line and
just kind of cut off, so and that's okay. Sometimes
we can still gather what it is you're you're sharing,
but you get thirty seconds and again, questions, complaints, compliments, insults,
whatever you've got, feel free to send those in and
we get all of them. Obviously we're not gonna be
(11:39):
able to play a lot of them, just because that's
not what it's there for. But it is there for you.
And just know if you send it, we get it, regardless,
if you are consulting, regardless, if you you know, are
maybe drunk, we get it. So just just be advised.
And I'm not poking fun on anybody when I say this,
but I do feel like it's it's it's worth mentioning.
(12:03):
There are some of that. I think they they are
using it as if it's talk to text, so they
want to be really clear and what they say, I
don't believe what you said is true. And look, I
talk like that a lot because talk to text. I mean,
I speak for a living. I'm on the radio every
day for four hours, and it's a real motivator to
know that today's latest technology, which is phenomenal, right, can't
(12:26):
seem to pick up what I'm saying in English. So
I use that a lot too. But this is not that.
This is an audio recording. So if you are sharing
what you're sharing in that way, it is going to
come across I mean, but that's what we hear, so
just just keep that in mind. Also, it's not like Alexa.
So if you're listening to if you're listening to us
(12:47):
on the iHeart Radio app and you hit that micro
from button and you say, hey, play Christmas music, it's
not going to play Christmas music. We're going to get
a file that comes into the talk back line that says,
hey play Christmas usic. Which it's okay, I mean, that
doesn't it doesn't bother me. But that's just that's just
what it is. So it's a new feature and look there,
I don't think you'll find it anywhere else as far
as listening to a live broadcast and you have in
(13:08):
the option and just hit a microphone button on the
app and and share what you want. So again, uh,
just just keep that in mind and uh, I'll be
more mindful of of it being there. Obviously we talk
about it quite a bit, but you know there are
sometimes we just get lost in the show and it's
tough to squeeze in. A couple of those A couple
of those again, what should we call those talk back calls?
(13:29):
It's not really a call. It's almost I mean, there's yeah,
but that sounds so boring, that's but you're right, that's
exactly what it is. Also, they may be telling me
to play Christmas music. Maybe that's what that message is. Well,
it could be a bad sign if you're listening to
us and you're you're you're telling the app to do
something else. I mean that they should not let you
do that. They should, they should, There should be a
(13:50):
there should be a prompt that says, no, you you
need to reconsider. You're making a big mistake by leaving
News Radio eight forty w h AS. But again, it's
not a it's an audio message. So so you don't
need to talk like you needed to text it out.
And also you know you can and there's nothing wrong
with it, but it won't work like if you're telling
the talkback line to do something within the app, it's
(14:10):
it's not gonna do it now. It also need to
let you know that it is powered by our friends
Alex our White PLLC sue Distracted Driver dot Com. Obviously,
a distracted driver can turn your day upside down, can
turn your life upside down at any moment. In fact,
I bet right now you didn't even realize that. Maybe
you did. You were on your way to work or
on your way to wherever you're going, and you were
probably near distracted drivers. And that's a scary thing to
(14:32):
think about, but it's just the truth. So obviously you
can't control it other than be not distracted yourself, be
mindful of the roadways. But look, it can happen to
anybody at any time, and when it does, I can
tell you who's gonna fight for you when it comes
to making you whole because of how you've been inconvenienced,
how your life potentially has been changed, And it is
Alex and his team. They're not from across the country
(14:53):
from New York or LA wanting you to think they're local. No,
they're local. They're here. Their presence is felt in the community.
That's very evident, I think, and if not, you just
don't have your eyes open. So again, appreciate Alex and
his team and it's Alex our White PLLC. You can
get more in more information at sudistractedge river dot com.
All right, quick check of traffic and weather for you
as we get this Monday started. Happy Thanksgiving week everybody.
(15:15):
Rory O'Neil, he said, to join us coming up here
in about four minutes, So stick around at NewsRadio eight
forty w h A S good Monday morning. It is
news Radio eight forty w h as coffee and company
with you, and we are Field by Thornton's and we
are now joined by Rory O'Neill. Rory, more than half
the homes in America in the last year have lost value.
Not great if if you consider your home as usually
(15:38):
one of the biggest investments you're going to make in life.
What's happening and what should homeowners expect as far as
the property values moving forward?
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Yeah, now this is all paper losses for the most part. Right,
this is according to Zillow. This is not people that
have actually lost money on their homes. But we are
seeing more values come down as the market sort of
stagnates with some of the pressures really with the higher
mortgage rates that essentially this generation isn't used to paying.
Old people like me. We remember when mortgage rates were ten, eleven, twelve,
(16:09):
fifteen percent in the eighties. But for anyone Gen z ED,
they're shocked when they pay over three percent. And that's
one of the reasons that the market is a bit
frozen right now. And there's also that supply shortage too,
but still places like Denver, Austin, Texas measuring some of
the biggest declines. Lots of Florida cities are on the
list as well, So we're seeing, at least on paper,
(16:31):
for the first time in more than a dozen years,
more than half the homes are losing a bit of
their value.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
When it comes to buyers, does this finally give them
a little leverage after the last few years.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
Here, You know, technically they'll classify this as a buyer's
market because there's a little bit of wiggle room. Typically
what's listed as the sale, what's listed as the proposed
price for sale in reality is about a point or
two points less than that at closing. You know, we're
not seeing the competition where the asking price is the
(17:01):
base and suddenly it goes way over that. That's happening
less and less frequently according to the day that it's
coming into Zillow.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Roy and Neils our guest showing us here at news
Radio eight forty whas Thanksgiving week has arrived and there's
going to be a lot of people traveling expecting record numbers.
What do we know about Brown Friday, which I guess
is the busiest and messiest day of the year. It
sounds like this is something I'm just learning about. Brown Friday.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
Yeah, it was new to me too, And thanks to
the folks at USA Today for ruining your appetite this morning.
Brown Friday is what plumbers worn about the day after Thanksgiving, ah,
because of so many demands on the plumbing system in
the house. Right, So actually the search the Google search
is for emergency plumbing or twenty four hour plumbing. All
(17:48):
seemed to spike on and around Thanksgiving. And we're talking
mostly about the sink here, by the way, so let's
be clear. So it's not that bad, but it's just
a reminder things like the turkey, the grease, the potato,
even the rice, the fibrous vegetables, the eggshells, None of
that should go down the sink. All of that should
be in the trash, not going down the sink. All
(18:09):
that stuff can gum up the plumbing and suddenly you're
paying for very expensive repairs on Brown Friday. So don't
be part of that crowd. When in doubt, put it
in the trash.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
Yeah, the rest of us are hopefully many of us
will be benefiting from the holiday and getting time off.
But the pipes, the plumbing, they're working overtime for us,
and for that we appreciate it. Again. Good to be good,
to be good, to be mindful of that. If you're
somebody out there that is expected to have a lot
of people over, maybe you're you're the host. But when
it comes to travel, what about this year? We actually
started the show discussing this. What about this year? Is
(18:42):
do we are re pointing to as far as it
being a record number for travel, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
It is looking like a record a triple A predicting
that travel is going to be up this year. You know,
they're a little uncertain about whether or not the airlines
shutdown or the air the government shut down. With the
pressure on the air traffic control system might lead more
people to drive rather than fly, but overall they're still
pretty confident that we are out there in droves. The
(19:08):
big travel demand started on Friday this past Friday for
those lucky ducks that get the whole week off. Of course,
it's going to peak on Wednesday, but this coming Sunday
is nothing to sneeze that either, because everyone comes home
at the same time, so it's also another one of
those days to be wary of the travel out there.
But the other thing that's been sneaking up is rather
than going to Grandma's house, we're seeing more and more
(19:30):
people and families making this as an opportunity to make
this your winter vacation or your early winter vacation, as
we're seeing a big Surgeon cruise popularity right now, the
Caribbean cruise season kicking off this week too.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
That's happening with me. I'm going to have a different
Thanksgiving this year, Rory, because my mother and stepfather they're
traveling to go see some friends and family and it's
more of a more of kind of a vacation kind
of thing for them. A sister she's going to be
doing the same thing, taking a little into a winter vacation.
So I guess I've got some examples right here in
my own family.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
But yeah, you get the Swanson Turkey frozen dinner. Is
that the plan?
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Well, you know we do. We do have the great
place that his churchill downs here and they usually have
a pretty awesome Thanksgiving, so we'll be there for a
little while that. I don't know, maybe I'm gonna take
the family to to to waffle House, white Castle something
like that.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
Don't make them work either, I know, I know, or
would you go tip them very well because they're.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Working, certainly, certainly, Rory, we appreciate your time. Have a
good day. My friend will talk tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Thanks big talking.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
It's Rory O'Neil. Yeah. If you guys can't tell, I'm
a little bitter that my family just up and decided
to do something different this Thanksgiving. But it'll be okay.
I'll figure it out, and I'm you know, just if anything,
they should know I love him and I appreciate the
time I used to get with him on Thanksgiving. Used
to get it. Not going to get it this year.
I'm kidding kind of all right, Tracking weather updates on
(20:51):
the way I know other sports updates coming your way
as well. Governor's Cup Week is here and everybody hates
their team.
