Speaker 1 (00:00):
I could let the Christmas music just play all morning long,
but we have to get to work, don't we. It's
five oh six here, it was Radio eight forty whas
Coffee and company with you, and we're going to be
in for a pretty pretty smooth day today when it
comes to weather. But once again, we've got a winter
weather storm on the way, and we will have, in fact,
a winter weather advisory starting tonight at seven o'clock. But
(00:21):
today just gonna be chilly all day. Highs in the thirties,
maybe the occasional flurry, But now we prepare so I'm
sure many of you have how many people you think
of out have already went out to get the bread
and the milk.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
I've seen the runs on the salt and see. I
gotta hang Christmas lights Friday. I was taking a vacation
day to hang Christmas lights.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Not from here.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I'll be here, but I gotta hang Christmas lights because
we're so far behind the power carve.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
It sounds like Friday may not be a great day
to do this.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Well, the good thing is I'm no Clark Griswold, so
we keep ours a modest sort of It looks nice,
it's tactful, but we.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Only got a couple of weeks left too. Oh know, right,
well that's kind of the way it is. And then
my son's home.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
He's actually driving home today so he doesn't hit the
weather tomorrow, and so we're all going to be around
tomorrow night to decorate. We're gonna put the ornaments on
the tree Saturday, NXT gull.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Look, I mean, can you give him a little bit
of a break, John, he had he had a cook
Thanksgiving dinner for forty people. Need right away?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
I mean no, it was just well, see, I'm not
one of those people that throws the decoration. We have
people throwing our decorations up seriously, like the day after Halloween.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Yeah, I'm those people. Yeah, that's me. You're looking at him.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Thanksgiving nights we were kind of the next week and
now you have the Scots of the world last.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Minute got on the late end. John's more modest, and
I'm the psychopath's guilty. There's nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I mean, it's they're up earlier and earlier, and it's
just you know, it goes to show you people are
excited about Christmas.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, and there's no shame in that game. Who I mean,
if you can't get excited about Christmas, I feel sad
for you. Great, I'm excited for this year. And there's
nothing better than having young kids that just love it
more than anybody because it's it's one of the many
cliches that you hear about that you hear from parents,
but it's so true. A lot of them are true. Right,
Cliches are cliches for a reason. But there's a new
(02:02):
energy that is there for you when you are adult,
you are grown up, and your kids are into it,
especially like mine are old enough now. Like obviously, when
my kids were young, young, they you know, they didn't
really know what it was. But now, I mean, my
son is obsessed with wanting to know everything about Sannah
and uh, it's fun. It's a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
So it doesn't change when they get older. By the way,
there's traditions we still do in our how good my kids.
You might hear that my son loves not only the
Halloween decorations, he loves the Christmas Day and my wife
has worked tirelessly to get the house decorated for him to.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Come home and see today. That's awesome. Yeah, it doesn't change, dude, Yeah,
and because of your your kids. So we've discussed this before,
but the three of us all really are all in
different phases. John is a brand new dad. He's got
a new born, not a newborn, but she's she's not
a year old yet, just a little older than six months,
and she probably at that age she might have John
might have got much sleep last night, because that's just life.
(02:54):
That's life at that stage. For me, mine are getting older,
both in school now this time for the first this
this year for the first time. And Scott's got a
you know, two young adults, one in college, one out
of college, but very young as an adult. So when
I hear that, you know, at their age, there's still
some things that like, you know, they're your kids, they're
your babies, and you can still have those moments. It
makes me feel good about because I'm already I'm a
(03:16):
worrier in general, but I'm already worried about. Well, better
enjoy this because you know, before too long, Nope, they
won't want to hang out with me. It won't be
fun anymore. But that doesn't go away. D We have
all three phases within that, right, that's exact stuff that's
covered all right, let's let's get everybody covered as far
as what they can expect as far as the forecast.
Now again, we'll have updates throughout the morning here from
Matt Melosavitch a w OK. Why but tonight around seven
(03:37):
o'clock is when it starts to roll in. Where the
the the rain, if there's any, we'll turn to snow
or maybe we just get snow, and it's it's parts
of it's it's the region here as a whole, obviously
the metro and then to the south. It sounds like
that's where it could get a little bit heavier, So
we're talking bullet in that area. So really, if you're
(03:58):
in this listening area Kentuck, you're going to be affected
in some way. But when it comes to the actual
accumulation starting to mount up, potentially overnight, is when that's
going to take place. So tonight tomorrow morning is where
we could, I guess, have a real rough commute for
folks and potentially get some school closures with snow. So
Louisville Metro, you know I sixty four, they're looking at
(04:18):
about two inches, and then southern Indiana and I seventy one.
That corridor there that's where you could get to, you know,
maybe two to four inches, and then I guess in
the area. Again, if you're in the area, expect some
type of impact here and be prepared. I feel like
this winter weather has arrived early, and in fact, there's
some numbers that show you we're already ahead of where
(04:41):
we typically are this time of year, which means we
could be in for a winter to remember, So be
prepared to everybody, all right, we'll keep you updated throughout
the morning on all that, of course, and we've got
an update on the traffic coming up in just a moment.
And also we've got John Shannon with News in about
twenty minutes or so, so stick with us. We were
rock and rolling here on a Thursday morning, is December
(05:02):
the eleventh. That News Radio eight forty whas it's five
seventeen here at News Radio eight forty whas coffee and
company with you, and we are fueled by Thornton's. Make
sure you stop in this morning if you've got time,
of course, make time actually because they've got a lot
of breakfast options for you. They've got biscuits and gravy
now still a relatively new menu item, and you never
(05:23):
know how long it's gonna last. Sometimes they let you
know when something is only a limited time offer. And
I do know that the peppermint donut is a limited
time offer. And I get it that sounds like a
different kind of donut than you're used to, But you
got to give it a shot. I mean, you don't
know until you know, and I know that you'll like it,
and if you don't, it's a U problem, not a
Thornton's problem in my opinion. Of course, I can't prove that,
(05:43):
but you know, so again, it'll be there for I
think til the beginning of January. So check it out.
It'll get you in the Christmas season. But maybe that's
not your thing. They've got other options. I'm sure you'll
find something that you'll like. Again, we are fuel about
Thornton's here at news Radio eight forty WHS. So we
we've had a rough start to the month of December
when it comes to just winter weather. So right now,
(06:05):
after the snow that we got on I believe it
was Sunday night that woke us up Monday. With some
accumulation we've had, we're so this is the best way
to describe it. The average of accumulation of snow per
season in Louisville John Allen, it's ten point eight inches.
We've already received nearly half of that in the first
(06:27):
We got that in the first nine days of December.
Nearly half Wow. So I have a hard time thinking
that even if we don't get any big massive storm
the rest of the way. I mean, it's December eleventh
right now, and we've got a potential two to four
inches coming our way overnight.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Again, We've said this a few times already. It's not
even officially winter yet we still have ten days away
from that.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
And man, this is something you know, it's rather obvious,
but a reminder for me yesterday, temperature is really not
worth even looking at when the wind is weapping, because
it'll tell you that it's you know, it's mid to
upper forties. But when the wind gets whipping it, it
feels a lot colder, obviously, and yesterday I don't think
it got super cold, but the temperature did drop quite
(07:10):
a bit throughout the day. So today we're going to
be in the thirties and tonight seven o'clock roughly is
when that winter weather advisory is going to be an
effect for the region, so real quick, some details we
got yesterday on the shooting that took place at Kentucky
State University. The video that I referenced seeing, I actually
saw this during the show. It was just on my
Facebook feed. It was a video that somebody in a
(07:32):
dorm room from their window posted a fight taking place.
And in the video, I can't I can't see any
specific shots that were taking at that time in the video,
but you can see a big fight, a melee, almost
multiple people involved, and then you quickly just I mean
(07:55):
you quickly see the campus police show up with a
gun drawn and the suspect quickly apprehended right after it happened.
So this was a this was a fight, This was
an incident, and it was I guess isolated as far
as just these these these individuals involved in this. There
was some kind of altercation and of course it led
(08:15):
to uh, somebody getting out of gun and shooting two
people and killing one. So a rough, rough way to
wrap up the winter in Frankfort, the fall semester, of course,
and some of some of the coverage of this, and
there's been a lot of it. Of course, that's typically
what you get when there's a shooting on a college
campus here in the state that that takes somebody's life.
(08:36):
But they've talked to a lot of the students that
I thought have been genuine and it's nice to hear
them defend their university and state, Hey, this is not
what we're all about. This is not something that you
you know, we want this university to be known for. Now.
This is the second shooting that's taken place at Kentucky State,
I believe in the last six months or so. So again,
clearly there's that that's unfortunate, but there were a couple
(08:58):
of students that talked to our partners at WLK why
about the semester coming to an end and they're finishing,
so like, this is tough to this to be the
lasting memory you have of being on campus. Is something tragic,
something tragic like this happening. But it was Jon Darryl
Fox Junior, the nineteen year old freshman that did die
from the injuries that that that he sustained. Second student
(09:22):
remains in critical condition and as of yesterday was I believe,
set to have a second surgery. So clearly still a
fight there from that second that second victim. All right,
we've got a lot to get into today. We haven't
even discussed the wild, wild college football world that exists.
I'm not sure how much it's going to be in
Scott's first update here. But what a story you thought
(09:44):
Lane Kiffin bailing on his team as they're in the
midst of a national championship run. Potentially, you think that
was a big story. How about the last twenty four
hours for Michigan football. Sharon Moore woke up yesterday the
head coach of the Michigan Wolverine football program. Now he's
fired and he's in jail, and there's still a lot
to unpack here. But fired with cause, inappropriate relationship with
(10:07):
a staff member, and a what a world college football is?
I mean, this story would be interesting if it had
nothing to do with football. All right, quick updated trafficking
weather on the way. We'll get to sports as well.
Don't go anywhere, and I mean it's stay put, hang out,
make yourself at home right here at news Radio eight forty.
Whas well, it didn't take long for L ANDP to
(10:28):
put the new drone program to use. It's a new
tool that they have. The thermal equipped drones they can
help them apprehend criminals help them just keep an eye
on things. And yesterday there were five suspects arrested in
what is believed to be a criminal organization car theft.
(10:48):
I mean, it's just a crime, basically, a scheme to
steal cars, a stolen car ring that was an organized thing.
And now five people again have been arrested. You've got
eighteen year old to forty three year old, five different
people again that have been involved in several car thefts
across Louisville. So I mean this is probably a no brainer,
(11:10):
and here we have some early evidence of it. But
I feel like the drone technology is a game changer
for them. I mean, that's just something that gives you
the ability. And again I'm sure the technology is even
more impressive that I'm envisioning as far as how they
utilize it to actually track people. In fact, I'm looking
at some video footage of what they see on the
(11:31):
drone right now as the wk YE newscast in front
of me is showing the exact footage of them. I mean,
it's just it's wild to see it's a gray video
in the subjects are just in all black. And again
I'm sure there's different ways you can view it, but
you can see law enforcement approaching a crashed vehicle and
the suspects are there. The drone is capturing it all.
(11:52):
And I'm sure the drone footage the point of view
is of course helping somebody communicate to law enforcement you
know where to be, where to go, and how to
to actually you know, apprehend those that of course are
involved here. So uh, the way in which this can
can be used to help catch the bad guys so
to speak, is is I mean endless as far as
(12:13):
just I'm just thinking of different scenarios where someone might
have been able to evade, someone might have been able
to get away, but not if the drones got odds
on you, because they'll track you, and you know you
can hide, maybe you find a really good hiding spot,
but that view from above is going to know exactly
where you go. So uh, that would be it'd be
(12:35):
intense to be somebody operating the drone and communicating. But
that's just uh, I mean, it's just the power of technology,
I suppose. Also, and I don't know if we have
any early information, any early data to tell us how
many are choosing to opt in, but the initiative they
had for folks to allow LMPD to to have access
(12:58):
to their security footage if, of course it's needed. But
you know, that means you're gonna have to trust that
they won't be looking at it until they request it.
And again I understand anybody they would say, yah, I
don't want to do that. But technology has come a
long way. I mean, it's an ever growing thing, and
the way in which we use it in the criminal
justice system is I mean, it's it's again growing every day.
(13:21):
But these are the kind of things that wouldn't be
wouldn't shock me. As it continues to grow, it's just
harder for you know, the bad guys to get away.
So yeah, if you haven't seen it, go check it out.
WK Why's got the actual LMPD drone footage and I'm
sure LMPD on their social media pages they've got it
as well. But you actually get a chance to see
(13:43):
sort of how they you know, what they're seeing from
the sky, and of course that's being communicated to law
enforcement that's in pursuit. So a win for the good guys.
All right, Yesterday was a wild day in college football
out of nowhere Yesterday late afternoon early evening news broke
that Charon Moore, the head coach at Michigan, had been
(14:04):
fired for cause. And it is really rare to see
a university be so upfront and direct that they're firing
this guy and it's for cause, and they didn't even
decide to stay discreet about what the cause was. They
made it clear that he had an inappropriate relationship with
a staff member, and then it got real weird where
(14:28):
he's being apprehended by law enforcement and as of late
last night, he was in jail. So Charon Moore was effected,
was fired yesterday with cause, and then within hours you
had a law enforcement agency I guess just right outside
of Van Arbor that Pittsville Township is the area of
(14:50):
Michigan that Searon Moore was detained after an alleged assault
took place. And they've been pretty they've been, I guess,
as quiet as they can be as far as details,
but they did confirm that they that he's that he's
he's in jail, and I don't know where this goes
from here. The last update as far as actual charges,
they were investigating charges, but uh, yeah, really an inappropriate
(15:13):
relationship with a staff member and I mean, what a
what a what a wild world college football is?
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Michigan can't get out of their own way.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
They can't. And uh, you know John and I were
talking before we came back from break there this. You know,
John of course is much more connected to the Big
Ten than I am as an Indiana fan. And there'd
been some rumors that this this, this exact thing was happening.
And sometimes rumors are that they're nonsense and and and
it's just maybe maybe there's an ounce of truth to
it and it turns into something else after a snowball.
(15:41):
But this is exactly what was rumored, right. Oh.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Yeah, there was talks about this weeks ago, that this
was going to come to fruition at some point, and
apparently yesterday was that day.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Yeah. And there's another rumor that I'm not going to
speculate on because that'd be irresponsible of me, and I'm responsible.
But why why it got? You know, how it got
to this point where they quickly took action and now
he's in custody. If with the rumor, if what's out
there has any ounce of truth to it, it'll make
more sense as far as how he got here. But
(16:12):
I feel for his fan for his wife's family. I
don't know people know this. Charlie Strong brought Serean Moore
here to be an assistant coach. He was here from
two thousand and nine to twenty thirteen during Charlie's entire stint,
and at that time Sharon met his now wife. She's
from Louisville. She's a Louisville mail grad, around the same
age as me. We actually have some mutual friends. So
feeling for those folks because what a public situation here,
(16:37):
that really is just an awful, awful thing for a
family to go through it under any circumstance, for it
to be such a national story, I can't imagine. But
we'll talk more about it because again, this story is
one of the biggest stories in the country right now,
regardless of sports. So again, stick around. We'll talk with
Roy O'Neil on the other side in News Radio eight
forty whas it is News Radio eight forty w coffee
(17:01):
and company with you. Thank you for hanging out with us.
We are fueled about Thorntons and we're now joined the
Rory O'Neil of NBC News. Rory a dramatic scene off
the coast of Venezuela as an oil tanker was apprehended.
Tell us the latest here. Obviously a big story nationally.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
Indeed we heard from President Trump announcing things, but really
it was the Attorney General, which you might not expect
with the online post detailing the actions to seize this
tanker as it was off the coast of Venezuela, seizing
the tanker and the oil inside. Now, she says this
was done because this tanker had been sanctioned for violating
(17:37):
the law by transporting oil and selling oil to places
that are under sanctions, and that's why they feel they
were justified in taking this action. Venezuela has called this
piracy by the US and not confirmed that the oil
was actually being sold to Cuba. So a lot of headlines,
a lot of spectacular video being released. There is another
(18:00):
indicator as to how much pressure the US is putting
on Venezuela calling for regime change there.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
So it sounds like the tanker was able to kind
of spoof its location and that's how they were initially
able to avoid getting caught exactly.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Their transponder seemed to be indicating they were in a
different part of the world when in fact, they attracked
them to off being off the coast of Venezuela. This
may all tie back essentially to this Swiss based Ukrainian
guy who had been sanctioned in the past. He's been
described as the leader of a network of ships and
illegal companies that are used to export Iranian oil for
(18:38):
the benefit of the Islamic Guard there and Hesba Lah
as well and terrorist groups.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
So it sounds like this tanker the Locate was headed
to Cuba but also part of the again part of
the network I guess destined for Asia.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
Well, and probably had been making stops along the way,
so you know, either buying and selling and picking up, dropping.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Off, making this making a run as they say, right,
there's the.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
Term yeah, and you know the ship has flown under
different flags, under different names, trying to stay out of
had say the public eye. But again the US saying
it's taking the action on a vessel that it's sanctioned
years ago for this illegal activity.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Riolios our guest joining us here at news Radio eight forty.
Whas so interest rates are are inching downwards, what do
you think this means for you know, the average folks
out there when they hear interest rates maybe heading in
the right direction. What kind of impact or any can
they can? They can they get soon?
Speaker 4 (19:38):
Yeah? And now these are short term interest rates, it's
what banks charge each other, so they're not the same
as a long term rate, like say for your thirty
year mortgage. So while they're not directly linked, they can
influence what happens for longer loans for a home or
even for a car. At this point, so it's encouraging
that this is the third rate cut in a row,
(19:59):
again by a or point. And you know, so this
is going to hopefully spur some business investment. This really
is something that applies to businesses more than individuals.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
At least directly.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
On the downside, though, if you're a saver, if you're
someone who has money in your savings accountant, that interest
rate you're being paid is probably going to come down
pretty quickly. Same for a CD, they're not going to
be as attractive.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Yeah, I've learned a lot about interest rates and how
it impacts businesses individuals, And of course it's not just
an interest rate for your mortgage or anything like that.
It's there's certainly a lot into it. And I know
what you just referenced is what a lot of people
think about when they hear potential changes to interest rates.
It's it's the savings they have.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
Well, right, And here's the other concern is that the
FED also signaled at the press conference that followed the announcement,
was like, we're done, so, you know, because everyone's sort
of had oh at the start of the year. No,
they're going to be six rate cuts. Well we're three.
And the Fed fields like this is about it that
they're trying to balance. They're seeing a weaker job market,
but at the same time, inflation is right there because
(21:02):
of the tariffs. In part they're saying the tariffs, are
they causing a one time jumping inflation or is this
something that could continue to climb? Is what they're waiting
to see. And of course we went forty five days
with no government so no government data, so there's sort
of flying blind here.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Yep, we shall see. Rory is always appreciate your time.
Enjoyed the rest of your day, my friend.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
Thanks Nick.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
That is Rory O'Neil of NBC News. Yeah, I know, uh,
the the if you've got a CD and obviously that's
that's an investment that's where you're really make us one
of the many ways you're you're you're invested. No pun
intended as far as what happens in these uh in
these potential rate changes, But yes, uh, not a surprise
that there was some real pushback from from a lot
(21:44):
of folks that just look when they when they want
to feel like, hey, I feel great in saying that,
you know, this current administration is really doing right by
us and the economy is getting a lot better. So
many people will have that effect when they go to
the grocery and they check out and no longer feel
as if they're getting excuse my language, but bent over.
I mean that's you know, I think President Trump doing
(22:07):
a bunch of you know, victory laps about a lot
of things, and he has good reason to do it
in many instances. But I think when it comes to
just the economy, the average Joe's out there, I mean,
they're gonna they're gonna feel that whenever they're checking out
at all kinds of different places, grocery stores mostly, and
no longer feeling as if I don't know how it
can keep affording this all right, quick update of trafficking
(22:28):
Weather's on the way another sports updates on the way
as well. It is five point fifty two at news
Radio eight forty whas
