Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, Welcome in happy Monday to you.
It is five oh five here News Radio eight forty
whas coffee and company with you, and we are field
by Thornton's and it is a cold one. In fact,
seven degrees is what we're currently looking at. And I
guess it's good news. But on the way in, I
was listening to our partners at WKY and they say

(00:21):
that we're going to get warmer weather today and it's
going to be noticeable. But yet we're still first of all,
hard to believe that right now when you walk outside,
and it's just disrespectful when it comes to the cold weather.
But yeah, still looking at warmer weather, but probably not
going to be a buff freezing But you said it
last week, and I guess if we can start the
week off here with some good news, some positive news

(00:41):
for folks, especially those who hate the cold weather. The
warm weather is on the way.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Fifty DEGREECE for Christmas.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Yeah, I mean, if you look at the extended forecast,
you know we are ten days away from Christmas right now,
and we've got starting I guess later this week. Friday
will be cold, the highest thirty of than that from
here on out, you're looking at i'd say the average
just a rough guess here, we're looking at mid to
upper forties as the high. So uh, not tropical by

(01:11):
any means, but uh, it'll feel tropical, it will. I mean, yesterday,
I thought that the sun was going to provide some
level of Okay, it's actually not as cold as the
as the you know, as it says the temperature says this.
But man, that sun, it's making it feel warmer. No,
yesterday was it was cold. In fact, yesterday I think
was gonna end up being colder than we're what we're
going to get today.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
But yeah, you walk out and you feel it in
your chest when you bring it in. I was out
running errand yesterday morning. In fact, I posted on social
media my car read seven degrees. Yeah mine, that's obnoxious.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Same yeah, same way here and our garage door yesterday
it struggled to open. We had to kind of like
kick it a little bit just to I guess, thaw
it out and maybe just create a little bit of
a of a break between the actual is frozen to
the ground. And then I was thinking, okay, we probably
shouldn't just keep it could break the garage door. If
we're trying to open it again, it can't do it

(02:02):
because it's frozen. So yeah, that's just that's how cold
it actually is. So what that has led to is
JCPS has decided to go in TI today and this
is probably one of those Well we have the ability
to do it. We can still technically have a school day,
although it's different, and kids don't have to wait out
at the bus stop in these crazy cold temperatures, because yes,

(02:23):
the temperature is so bad that you could there could
be spots that head a little bit of a little
bit of just something just wet that turns to complete
ice because of how cold it is. But I would
imagine this decision made by JCPS more so because of
temperatures and anything else, because we really, we really didn't
get as much snow as I think people were expecting
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
No we didn't.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
And to your point, you know you still have kids
out there waiting at the bust. Now it's gonna be
a warm or two hours later. But I know our
neighborhood had patches of ice and whatnot, So I get
it right, decision. It's frustrating a lot of parents on
the Monday. But hey, listen, it's Christmas week.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
We're ramping up. A lot of school's gonna let out Friday.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
You're true, yeah, last week. I guess for those they get,
they get the school Christmas break. So jcpis on NTI,
and they did at least let them know last night.
I mean, I'm sure that's still not a super convenient
thing for you if you've got to arrange childcare, you've
got to make some adjustments with your work schedule. But
I don't know, maybe it did help you out a
little bit, getting somewhat of a heads up. And then
also Oldham County doing the same thing. And for the

(03:20):
most part, the majority of the schools here in the
region are open. You can go to WKHY. They've got
a running list of closures, delays, that kind of stuff.
So let's get say, the table set for the Monday
that we've got here a lot to get into. We'll
talk a little more just about what this cold where
this cold weather ranks as far as just this time

(03:41):
of year. I mean, it's December fifteenth. We're already well
above the average amount of snow activity for this time
of year. But we're already also getting close to the
average of what we get in a winter season, and
technically winter hasn't actually arrived just yet. So yeah, but again,
as I say that, it is nice to know that,
and the next really for the rest of this month

(04:02):
almost we're looking at right now timoatures that are going
to be well above freezing. So I guess that's good news.
Maybe Mother Nature just got here early and she she
made her presence known more so on the early side
of winter, but we shall see. Also some big news
out of Hollywood, and Scott and I were just chatting
about this during the during the during the books, say,
during the break before the show started, about a director

(04:24):
and actor who I will admit not somebody that I
am super familiar with. In fact, I felt very much
out of touch because this is somebody that I couldn't
find any way of me. Oh okay, yeah, that's who
that guy is. And it turns out it's probably because
I guess it's more so my age. But Rob Reiner
and his wife were found murdered in their home. And

(04:45):
I don't think there's been any official confirmation as far
as who's who's responsible for this, but if you're following
it at all, I'm sure most have seen at least
the early information that we have, but certainly a big
story nationally. And you made me feel better, Scott to
know that. But it wasn't crazy for me, as someone
born in nineteen eighty eight to not really have a
lot of familiarity with Rob Reiner.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
No, it's like I went through this when we used
to celebrate the anniversary of the John F.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Kennedy shooting.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
I mean that was well before my time. That did
not have the same impact on me that at the
time that a lot of folks had. But Rob Reiner, certainly,
I'm a big fan of all in the family he
did that, not a big fan of spinal tap, but
he also was known for that, certainly knowing that is
of course marriage to Penny Marshall. But and very outspoken politically.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Not President Trump.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
That makes him, That makes that makes me a little
more I guess realize why he's you know, getting not
to regardless of his career. This is somebody clearly that
it's and also, let's be honest, it's a Hollywood type
of that's right murder, that'll that'll generate more interest too.
So that is the news that maybe you didn't even
know about until this morning, because it was it was
late last night. At least whenever I saw I say

(05:51):
late last night, it's funny. Late late to me is
like it's nine o'clock, it's late.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
That's that's not a life I live.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
It'll resonate, I think with a lot of our listeners
only in the fact that he did play the iconic
character Michael Stivick, who is the liberal political activist that
kind of led his way in his life. Personally, there's
life imitating art, our agentating life is what it was.
An iconic figure in Hollywood certainly is going to leave
a legacy.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Sad to see, but you'll.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Hear more about his life, I'm sure throughout the morning and.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
You'll, oh, no doubt.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
But I don't expect you to, Like I said, I
wouldn't expect you to know about it.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Roy O'Neil is gonna chat with us a little bit
about it, tell us what the latest is as far
as what info that we do have. Also, we now
have the non to one one calls revealed for those
that called nine one one after the deadly ups plane crash.
Hard to listen to, but certainly something we'll discuss and
let you hear a little bit of this morning.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
So stick with us. It is coffee and company. We're
field about.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Thornton's right here at news Radio eight forty whas it
is coffee and company with you here at news radio
eight forty whas we are field about Thorntons. Stop in
this morning, get yourself a cup of coffee and a
donut for just three bucks. That's one of the many
options you have for breakfast, including the gets in gravy,
a variety of different breakfast sandwiches.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
So again we are filled by Thornton. Stop in.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
There's plenty. In fact, I stopped counting. I think there's
nearly fifty in the Kentuckian area. So if you're in
Kentucky and there's likely one near you, and we hope
you stop in and see them. All right, So we
got about an inch of snow I guess higher totals
as you had north of the Louisville metro area. No
big blockbuster snowstorm, but enough to make an impact. And
of course the temperatures. Now we have arctic air and

(07:27):
that's that's that's what it sounds like.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Very cold.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
So over last night you had the flash freease and
that turns really any type of wet road can I mean,
this is where I guess you get into the real
danger zone of black eyes slick spots. But overall, I
think the roads are are are fine as far as
the main roads. I'm sure you can find some some
areas that haven't been treated, and if that's the case,
then I'm sure it's very slick. But cold weather advisory

(07:54):
is in effect it till later this morning because of
these cold conditions, and it is gonna warm up. We've
got high thirty two today, so just keep that in mind.
As brutal as it is right now, it is going
to get better. And as we discussed to start the show,
we've got a real optimistic finish as far as just
temperatures the rest of the calendar year, because from now

(08:16):
until at least Christmas, it looks as if we're going
to probably be on average with highs in the upper forty.
So if you were somebody that dreads the cold, it's
not going to be hot, not gonna be warm, but
certainly warmer than what we've had seemingly in the last
the last few weeks. So what I have yet to
see but I did see the story that again our
partners at WK why I had about the this this fog,

(08:40):
it looks like fog, but I guess it's I'm trying
to see the exact way they described it before I
make a fool of myself here, But because of just
how how cold the Ohio River is like, it looks
as if there's something a little bit I guess. I
guess maybe it looks like fog with an effect to it.
As far as what's you know, rising from the from
the water. You didn't lose me for a second. I

(09:01):
decided I needed to turn my microphone off to clear
my throat. I didn't want to, you know, do that
in your ears, but I knew I should have not
risked it. My voice totally fine, But I guess it's
just that time of year that if I don't chug
water every break I get, I'm gonna end up just
dying on air.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Not good.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
But we've got a lot to get to this morning,
including a busy, busy morning when it comes to sports.
Scott will be in with an update here in just
a few minutes. Both Louisville and Kentucky getting wins, a
sign of life for Kentucky basketball at a time where
they desperately needed. Louisville continues to look the part.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
That's for sure.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Indiana added to the list of things that just still
kind of don't seem real. Indiana has a Heisman Trophy winner.
And I wouldn't call it controversial at all. I think
people have just either chosen to forget or they just
have very short memory. The Heisman Trophy has never been
about who has the best stats in college football, like

(09:58):
the Husband Trophy has for decades now gone to guys
just like Mendoza of Indiana who were really good. We're
a very big factor in a team that's really really good.
And to me it was it was it was obvious
it was gonna win. So I don't really know if
anybody's bothered by it, but I did find it rich

(10:20):
those campaigning for Diego Pavia.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Don't let the Vandy logo fool you. This guy can play.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
And I'm thinking, how about some awareness here as if,
like the Indiana football logo is why Mendoza is gonna win.
I mean, damn it, all these Indiana guys getting the
benefit of the doubt in football, Come on, all right,
quick break trapping weather on the way. Rody O'Neil's gonna
join us five thirty five here, I'm sorry, five to
forty five, getting ahead of myself. All right, stick with

(10:47):
us again. It's news Radio eight forty whas. It's five
thirty six here at news Radio eight forty whas Coffee
and company with you, and we are Fieldbeth Thornton's take
us with you wherever you go. You can listen live
on the iHeartRadio app. And if you're listening on the
iHeart app, we've got the talkback Line powered by Alex R.
White PLLC Sue Distracted Driver dot Com. So just click

(11:08):
that microphone button on your device if you're listening on
the iHeart app, and you'll be uh, you'll be prompted
to fire away questions, complaints, compliments, whatever have you.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Whatever you've got, feel free to to send him over.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
We're gonna talk to Roy O'Neil coming up here at
about five forty five, so that's about eight minutes away,
and uh, there's a lot of things to throw his way.
I'm sure we will get the latest on the Hollywood
death of an actor and director and his wife, Rob
Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner. They they were
found yesterday dead from what appeared to be stab wounds

(11:41):
and people the uh the not people you know people
the outlet, not just people you know humans, uh they
are They are citing unnamed sources claiming that the couple
was killed by their son, Nick Reiner, who is known
for his his troubled life and of course known for
being the son of Rob And just no way this

(12:03):
wouldn't be a tragic situation to people dead, stabbed to death,
found in their home. But also if in fact that
is true, that that makes it even even more heinous.
But police have not confirmed this just yet, but Rory
will probably tell us the latest as far as this morning.
But no doubt a big Tom Hollywood homicide that is
going to get a lot of attention. And I didn't
mention to Scott right before the show this morning that

(12:25):
I felt very much.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Out of it, like how do I not know who
this guy is?

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Everybody seems to know exactly, so I now at least
can can put a face to who this person to
who Rob Ryaner is again and if you're listening, you're
probably thinking, how does this guy not know?

Speaker 2 (12:39):
We'll get it. You got to keep in mind.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
When when Rob Reiner was probably maybe at his peak,
I wasn't alive yet Sometimes you know, maybe I need
to reiterate that to make it at least, to at
least give myself an excuse as to why maybe it
would make sense that I'm not super familiar with who
this person is. But when I see the visual of
Rob ryaner in all in the family, that is something
at least that I do recognize. But again, that of

(13:02):
course will be a big story nationally. Also, speaking of
stories nationally, something we can discuss with Rory when he
joins us here shortly is the shooting that took place
yesterday at Brown University. Obviously, we're no longer stunned whenever
we hear of these shootings that take place at schools,
not just schools that are elementary, middle, and high, but

(13:23):
also colleges on campuses. I mean, we had one at
Kentucky State here in the Bluegrass State just within the
last week or so, and now at Brown University there's
a shooting that's left to dead, nine have been injured,
and then they had a suspect in custody and within
a matter of hours they came out to say they

(13:44):
are releasing said custody because the evidence has pointed them
in a different direction. So they have the footage that
shows the alleged shooter right after the shooting happened, walking
away very commonly, but in all black, and at least
the footage that I've seen, it shows only really the
rear view, so you can't get a good look. But

(14:04):
I'm sure before long at least hopefully they'll track down
whoever this this individual is. Also coming up a little
bit later on. We'll let you hear the nine to
one one calls. They were just released yesterday for those
who called nine to one one as soon as the
ups plane crash happened last month. And uh, pretty chilling
to hear. But you've got folks that called from great
A Auto Parts, of course, that was one of the

(14:26):
businesses very much impacted in a tragic way. You've got
other people calling to just say, hey, there's black smoke everywhere,
don't know what's going on. It sounds bad, and yeah,
just trying to put yourself in the shoes of those
who you hear is a pretty pretty heavy thing to do.
So again, we're loaded the rest of the way, and
I hope you stick with us on this cold, very

(14:47):
very cold December morning. It's a Tuesday. It's five forty
here at News Radio eight forty whas. It is Kentucky,
and it's morning news, Coffee and company with you here
at news Radio eight forty whas. And we're now joined
by Rory Neil, Rory O'Neil of NBC News. Rory will
start with some big shocking and I guess still developing
news yesterday out of Hollywood as Rob Rein or his

(15:09):
wife found stabbed to death in their home.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
What do we know right now?

Speaker 4 (15:13):
Yeah, not a whole lot of details. Awful press conference
by LAPD overnight, but the family does confirm that Rob
Reiner and his wife Michelle were apparently stabbed to death
in the family home. Now People magazine is reporting this
morning that their son, Nick, thirty two years old, who's
admitted to having troubles with drugs and alcohol, is being

(15:35):
questioned by police in connection with this attack. But this
guy's been a Hollywood icon for decades, hitting it big
and all in the family but then going on to
become a director of films that the Princess Bride, A
few good men stand by me. It's crazy this guy's
contributions and at seventy eight was still working at it.

(15:55):
We're expecting Spinal Tap two coming out in just a
matter of months.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
His son again, as you mentioned people, they're the only
ones as of right now reporting that it was the
son who committed this unbelievable act. But I'm surprised to
hear is how many people are familiar with him? Why
was he somebody that was so well known just because
he's the son of somebody so influential, and or I
get the sense that maybe his father has maybe used

(16:21):
his son's story within some of his work.

Speaker 4 (16:24):
Oh boy, yeah, so okay. So Rob Reiner the son
of Karl Reiner. Carl Reiner, another comic genius back in
the days with mel Brooks, also put together the Dick
van Dyke Show. We were just celebrating Dick Vandyke's one
hundred birthday this weekend. So Carl Reiner's son Rob then
rose to fame in the Family sitcom or All in

(16:44):
the Family, the sitcom All in the Family where he
was meathead famously, but then struck out as a director
with just some incredibly successful films. Again, when Harry met Sally,
The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, Spinal Tap. Pretty
incredible resume, stand I mean, one of my favorites of his.
So just an incredible resume as a director. Also an

(17:05):
outspoken activist for liberal and democratic causes as well, and
recently was working with Solidad O'Brien on an iHeart podcast
series about the jfk assassination.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
So Nick Reiner, though, what is his I mean, is
his It seems like, yeah, that's what I mean it
So many people seem to know his son, and that's
what is it. Is it just because he's the son
of a celebrity or has he been involved in his
in his father's sort of productions and whatnot?

Speaker 4 (17:31):
Yeah, well, look, Mick has told People magazine in the
past he's spoken about a long battle of drug addiction,
even periods of homelessness. So even the fact that he
was the son of a certainly a successful and wealthy family.
H Yeah, Nick, thirty two years old, I think just
known by association. I don't think he'd really struck out
to do much of anything on his own. Well, because
it's just and by the way, thank you for clarifying,

(17:53):
because I was afraid he didn't know who runs.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Yeah, well, what do you mean to do on.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
Well, I will say the it was somebody that I
had to see what he looked like in all the
family for to fully hit me. Okay, yes, I'm familiar
with who this person is, but no, the story again,
when I initially saw the news last night, it was
already the report from people that that his son was
believed to be the one responsible for it, and it was.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
It was.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
It was. It stood out to me that everybody was
very much familiar with his son, but I wasn't quite
sure if it was because he's just one of the
one of the many kids who ends up being a
known celebrity because of who their parents are.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
Well, I think it was also a bit well known
for his struggles yea and the drug addiction and the
homelessness and things like that. Didn't really make too much
of a secret out of it. I think in those
Hollywood circles, it was something that was well known how
much Nick Reiner was was struggling in life. So yeah,
now that you know, because we got the confirmation even
from the police saying they're not looking for anybody, which

(18:53):
was pretty remarkable in one of these situations like this,
so just tragic all.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
Around, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Right. So we had some very different parts of the
world here, but two violent attacks that took place Rhode
Island and of course in Australia. What do we know
here as far as early details as far as what
took place in who they believed responsible.

Speaker 4 (19:12):
Well in Rhode Island at Brown University. The remarkable thing
is late last night, around eleven pm, they announced that
their person of interest was not the guy, so they
released him. So now they are at square one in
this investigation. People are now saying, wait, I'm not sending
my kids to school today, even elementary or junior high,
fearing that this mass shooter is still out there. So

(19:34):
the one person they did have in custody for most
of the day Sunday was released late yesterday when the
evidence just didn't match up. So now they are trying
to find the gunman who opened fire inside the Brown
University Engineering building. Two students were killed, nine others are
still were injured. I think one was sent home from

(19:55):
the hospital, one still on the edge, but the others
look like they'll make recoveries.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
Good stuff, Rory. As always, we appreciate your time. Enjoyed
the rest of your day, my friend.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
Thanks Maig.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
That's Rory and Neiald NBC News. All right, let's get
a quick update of traffic and weather. I can tell
you gonna be a cold one today. But hey, if
you're with us right now, you're up and at it early.
Just know that what you're feeling right now, eight degrees,
I believe is what it is. It's gonna get better,
not just today but this week, so the warmer weather
is on the way. But we'll get an update for
mett melosa bitch as far as what we're looking at

(20:26):
the rest of today, as well as an update on
the traffic. So stick around right here in New's Radio
