Speaker 1 (00:00):
I had to run and get something out of my
(00:01):
car during that news update there, and can confirm that the
cold weather is still just disrespectful, very very cold eight
degrees currently and uh yeah, that's why you've got NTI
for JCPS, and then some of the school districts in
southern Indiana have have have gone with their version of
NTI Virtual Learning. And if you are a kid uh listening,
(00:24):
which we'll probably get many of them, you're you should
consider yourself lucky you don't have to sit at the
bus stop if you're somebody that does ride the bus,
because man, it is it is brutal. Yesterday was actually worse.
But the warm weather's on the way. We've talked about
that throughout the morning. If you're somebody that that is
tired of just how cold it's been. We're going to
have a good ten day stretch here leading up to
of course Christmas. That will it'll it'll be warm. I
(00:47):
think there's one day right now in the ten day
forecast that it that the high is not well above freezing.
So again, the warm weather is on the way, and
although it won't be super warm, it'll feel like it
compared to what we've had as of late. All right,
it's coffee and company with you here at News Radio
eight forty whas we are fueled by Thornton's appreciate you

(01:51):
I never really thought about. But if you were a Malsanna,
I bet you've got some stories right. So we've now
got a Reddit thread that has gotten a lot of
a lot of traffic online because it's mall Santa's revealing
the funniest things kids have have asked for, and he
got me thinking, I don't really remember anything specifically I
asked for from Santa. Like, I'm sure I did. I mean,
(02:13):
I did what every kid does, or at least most kids,
I'm assuming they do. They'll they'll get in line at
the mall or wherever, and they'll be sweating it out.
What are you gonna What are you gonna ask the
big guy for? Right? And I don't remember. I mean,
I'm sure I did ask him for things, but I
don't know. I was always really nervous. I wasn't scared
of Santa, but I was just I guess I was starstruck.
Can you think of any times you asked Santa for
(02:34):
something like in person rather than Christmas list?
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Nothing super extravagant, I feel like. But at the same time,
I'm like you, I was always just super nervous, thinking
I was meeting a celebrity. That sort of thing is
you know it was a kid? Oh yeah, but man,
that was I can't imagine these days being a kid
doing that sort of thing.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Yeah, so here are some that that mal Santa's or
I guess Santa's who have been set up somewhere and
uh been asked for gifts kids. A child very calmly
told one Santa, I don't want toys. I want a
receipt so I can return my brother. Yeah, that's that's
a request. I'm sure Sannah was not expecting.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
This year. His brother was right there next to him too.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
So one one kid asked Santa for a Green Bay packer,
not a gear, not a not jersey, but he wanted
an actual player to like, you know, be there on
Christmas morning. That's a little odd. Uh, this one's kind
of sad. A teenage girl whispered that she just wanted
her acne gone, and she told Santa that she wishes
for some kind of a cure.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
That just makes me sad.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
But then there's also uh the baby brother revenge horns.
So a little girl wanted a loud, canned air horn
so she could wake up her brother from naps. So
he knows what it's like because he was a baby
and he was waking everybody else up. Yeah, some of
these are just I mean they're they're they're silly. But
I mean, I I'm sure if you're listening now and
(03:56):
you've ever been Santa at anything at your church, or
maybe you did it as a as a side job,
I mean, there's probably nothing that would surprise me as
far as what kids what kids may ask for. And
I do feel like maybe I'm way off here, but
it does seem as if most kids, even those that
like a really early age, even if some of them
(04:17):
maybe have a longer list than than, you know, than
what is realistic. I feel like most kids don't ask
for something that like is just impossible, right, Like you know,
I Don'm having a Green Bay packer for Christmas is impossible,
So it happens. But like I feel like, you know what,
I hear more from kids that they're putting on their
list or like, you know, I've got a lot of
friends of mine who have kids that are relatively around
(04:39):
the same age as as my kids and whatnot, And
you know, it's time of year when you see them,
hey were you asking Santa for? Like they're not saying,
you know, I want my mom to get me a
new house, or you know, I want you know, I
want I want to you know, a new car or something.
I mean, honestly, I guess most most of the things
that young kids desire are toys and things that like,
you know, even though they're expensive and you can't get everything,
it's probably manageable for a lot of parents. Now, again,
(05:02):
if you're somebody that's having a tough time making ends meet,
that's certainly understandable right now, but you know, you want.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
To try to do the best for your kids.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
You know, it's unfortunate that we're in this situation at
least a lot of people are as far as just
having to charge and finance gifts. It also is a
reminder that parents will will do whatever they can to
make sure their kids have the best Christmas possible while
also being at least, you know, moderately responsible. I mean,
you can't go out there and say, hey, we're going
to face eviction in four weeks because I had I
(05:31):
had a great Christmas for my kids. But you know, again,
it's sad that we're here to where people just have
a tough time affording things. But also you know, they'll
justify going to debt, which sucks, but they'll do it
because they want their kids to have a good Christmas.
And I don't mean they're going to spoil their kids
beyond belief, but you know, you make exceptions for things
(05:53):
like that. And as a parent to two young kids,
that are right. I mean, I'm in my prime as
a dad when it comes to christ Is because my
kids are so into it. It's the best way to
experience Christmas. I think.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
I don't really.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I mean I remember it as a kid and how
awesome it was. But man, I'm excited to see them
when they open up presents on Christmas morning. I'm excited
every morning when they see where they're elf ended up,
like that's the elf on the shelf stuff. I enjoy
that kind of stuff. So yeah, be a dad's awesome.
You agree, John, You're new, but it's awesome, right. Little
eight month old Daisy can't really do the Christmas thing.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, but it's still excited. You think you'll be there soon, Yeah,
you'll be there soon.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Good stuff. Let's get to a quick update of trafficking weather,
shall we. We've got Rody O'Neil set to stop by
at about eight thirty five, so stick around for that.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Don't go anywhere again.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Keep it locked with us at News Radio eight forty
whas it is eight eighteen here at News Radio eight
forty whas coffee and company with you. Appreciate you hanging
out with us to get this week started ten days
away from Christmas, and yeah, eight degrees. I because I
know that it is going to warm up later. I
guess I need to remind myself that it is still
(06:58):
morning in those warmer temperatures. It's gonna take some time,
but yeah, it is. It is cold outside, and that
has led to j CPS going with NTI. I do
love that they still allow for sports activities to take
to take place, because that would suck.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
It's I'm sure that's not a big factor for a
lot of folks, but if you miss out on certain
games because of like certain games won't get made up
if you have a snow day that gets in the way,
like in like high school baseball, there's a lot of
rainouns and a lot of those games because of just
different schedules, they don't get made up. But yeah, the
j CPS NTI, some of the smaller school districts or
(07:35):
not smaller, but some of some of those that are
in southern Indiana, they've done the same thing. But the
other smaller school districts in the region, seems like all
of them have decided to have a normal school day.
I think Oldham County also doing remote learning. So again,
I'm sure kids love it because they don't have to
get out of bed really, and they can still techt
(07:56):
I mean, I don't know, I shouldn't just assume that
any kid that is at home doing in t I
is going to mail it in and maybe get away
with you know what you can when you're not in school.
But like, let's be real here, like it's there's no
way it's there's no way it's the same. And I've
only heard from teachers who who don't like NTI. But
I'm sure this this is like the ultimate morning where
(08:18):
you can say, Okay, yeah, I'm not so bothered by
it because it's really cold outside. Now, if you're a
parent having a scramble and get somebody to watch your
kid or help with n t I and all that
stuff like that, that's where it becomes a bigger issue.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Or if you're my wife, you're a parent and a teacher, Yeah,
trying to parent a child while while trying to teach
kids remotely.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Yeah, that could that could be problematic.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
It was problematic a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, I
get it.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
And uh, this is also you know, first of all,
shout out to your wife because she's somebody also that
I'm sure she could to some extent. I think teachers
feel the wrath and the frustration from parents, but I
want to remind parents that, like your teacher has nothing
to do with it any any.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Distance that is. And I feel like most of them,
just speaking at least for from my from my from
my wife who's a teacher, and some of her co workers,
a lot of them at the elementary level don't like it.
There's not a lot that they really accomplish at that
level and remote learning anyway, and so it feels like
a waste of time to a lot of.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Them at that age, Like it's it to me, that's
the age where it's clearly going to be the most
different type of sits.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
More like adventures and baby sitting online.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Yeah, And I mean my son is in kindergarten. He
has nt I and it's just like what do you do? Yeah,
like he like my son has a chrumebook and and
you know, like it's you know, like he asked me
when he like, what video games can he put on it?
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Like he you know s we're concerned about and rightfully
so it's seems like.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Yep, no doubt. So again what I what I'm I
guess I'm fascinated by it, but I don't know why
I'm fascinated by it is that And I'm not even
here to to to defend any school district, any individual
because I just it's not where I'm coming from. But
when did the school districts just become punching back on
social media for everybody? Because, like you, I can't open
(10:03):
up Facebook, Instagram without like some parent with the eye
roll emoji.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Wow no school today? Really?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
And then Bullet County has school and that's where my
kids are. Like I've seen people I know, could you
believe they actually had school today? Like they just can't
win and satisfying body.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Yeah that's true.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
But like if there's only certain things that trigger people
to get out that phone and open up that Facebook
app and fire off a status and let people know
how they really feel, I feel like the trigger of
what a school district decides to do seems to trigger
more people than I would ever expect. But that's just me,
all right, quick update of traffic and weather. We'll get
to sports on the other side right here at news
(10:46):
Radio eight forty whas it is a forty six as
we put the finishing touches on a Monday edition of
Coffee and Company fueled by Thornton's. And it is cold outside,
but that mustache keeping you warm. Tony Venetti full are so.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Genesis Diamonds to Christmas party was last week and they
had the caricature guy that draws him like the guy
at the Beast. Ye yeah, yeah, yeah, And I didn't
ask him to. He just kind of looked at me
and he drew it anyway. Uh, it was ron Burgundy too,
because I did. I did the turtle neck. That was
the turtle neck and dress yacket. But yes, I like
the mustache.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Yeah it's uh, it's working, and hey, who knows, maybe
it keeps you warm a little bit. I so both
of you have have facial hair. I get whiskers.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
No, you look like you can get it going.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
So I get to a point where it's like, okay, yeah,
she looks like he's not groomed like I needed, like
I need to to.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Take a sack all week to get where he's at now.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Yeah, I've tried before, and the longest I've actually gone
without shaving is whenever I used it to challenge, like
to motivate my son. I'm like, hey, he's like, what's
you leave your beard? And I'm like, I can't grow
a beard, son, Hopefully one day you will. And he's like,
you should try, and I'm like, all right, well you
stop back talking to your mom.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
I'll try.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
And yeah, and I'm Cuban Italian, so I grow a
beard so fast. It's like that transformation between the regular
guy and Santa when he just comes through it and
the beard grows on.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
Dv Admitte, you had one in third grade? I had,
I had.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
I had the Eddie Murphy mustache in the freshman year
in high school. It was pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
And by the way, when you are the guy with
the early facial hair like it's you know, it's a
flex right, I mean.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Well with the with the name like mine too, so
uh yeah, so it works.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
So I don't know if you all plan on sharing
any of this audio today, but the none one one
calls from the upsh plane crash that took place last month,
we played some of those here and there, and it's
just another reminder that the every everybody just going on
with their day, the randomness of life could lead to
you one running out of great A Auto parts because
of what just happened. And at that time you don't
(12:47):
know what happened, but you know you need to run,
or if you're somebody that's just near it and you
look up in the sky and think this this is
super scary. But just hearing the voices of those that
did call nine one one, the panic and the frustration
from those that were that were stuck to where they
know they were being held at ups they couldn't leave,
it's just another one of the reminders of how tragic
(13:07):
that thing was and also just makes it more real
than it happened.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Certainly, I've heard a lot of them as I've watched
the news all weekend. We're picking it up from our station,
and of course TV is playing a bunch of them.
They always warned too, it's like, well, some of this
can be hard to hear, well, I bet, and there's
plenty of them for sure, and someone's going to try
to put the timeline together and put all this together
because at the end of the year. I think John
(13:31):
Shannon and I were talking last year. It's the lead. Oh,
it's the lead for twenty twenty five, even though we
had a lot of stuff happen. The plane crash is
the lead because I.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Thought about this this morning as I'm thinking, Yeah, there
won't be a story bigger than that.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
No, because the fingers of this thing kind of reach
everybody with the inclusion of UPS. If this was a
Delta flight, maybe, but UPS flight, it is just it.
It has too much of a Louisville thing to it,
and the firefighters and the people that lost their lives
and the people that were saved.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
And every day those planes take off, and if you
live here and you are somebody that is often on
sixty five, it's or even the waters, and like it's
normal to you, it doesn't really stand out. But I
guess it's just how the algorithm of social media works.
But shortly after this became, of course a national story.
When the crash happened, you would see people sharing videos
of when they went to Louisville and they were like, oh, yeah,
(14:21):
I thought it was kind of weird that it looked
like I could reach up and grab a plane as
I'm driving by Cardinal.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Boy, how many times have you been there covering the
cars at a UOL football game and watch one of
those seven to seventy sevens go across And it looked
and obviously the distance she was great, but it looks like,
is that going to clip the top of the stadium?
Speaker 1 (14:39):
No, boy can confirm. It's a scary thing. And in fact,
I've been to a game. It was that Friday night
game against Clemson where you know, you just notice it
more and more so, and that that spot maybe the one.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Where you feel like you're the closest to it. You're like,
this is going to hit us. Yeah, I tell you.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
It's been interesting too, is seeing all the h I
thought you'd like that. Especially on Facebook. There's plane spotter.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
Groups that I follow in all of this have dug
through and found their pictures of that airplane in the
different places they saw it, some of them like two
days before it crashed.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
If they never fly again, here's it's kind of yeah,
well yeah, they're on it, you know, yeah, yeah, what's
the name of the group. It's like planespotters dot net.
There's a couple of there's a couple of uh, these.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
The people that say Nick Shaban was in let you
do well they used flight trackers, Yeah, when they use
that software, but it's it's just it's a group on Facebook.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
But they used like flight aware and flight twenty four
to seven and track planes and and they've gone back
and dug through all their posts and stuff and found
like the last time they had a picture.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Of the meetings and an official membership car idea like
a thing where they.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
Started aviation junkies right, just kind of at the windows,
staring in at the end.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Say your name, say your name. I say my name.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
When I think of flight Tracker, I think of and
you'll remember this, Tony. What was the airport in southern Indiana?
Patrino went.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Marksville. Yes, I doesn't even know they had an airport there.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Yes, I rode the bud Light blimp in that thing
on Oaks Day one.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
That sounds a Hartsville.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Yeah, the Rebel Field.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
They have Rebel Field in Clarksville and they also have
an airport that shares with for Camp.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Yeah. Nick, I thought the same thing. Yeah, this would
be awesome.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
In the four hours of going over the top of
I was like Oaks Day above Churchill Downs I'll do
my show from there.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Great.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
Those things are like Bob's in the water. You go
down ten feet, over ten feet over to the left
ten feet. It's like if you get seasick or you know, airsick,
you're done.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Or if you're like scared of heights like I am.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Yeah, and the motors are right next to your head,
so you have to wear those gear or you're not
going to be able to think.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
It'll probably taken five minutes for me to think, yeah,
this isn't for me.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
This wasn't fun. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
So yeah, that's the lead for sure for the year.
Today is going to be even more difficult to try
to discern what do you lead with? Most news people
are going to say, well, schools are out there.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
You want to hear it, Yeah, if you want, if
you want to, if you want to, just join in
on what people are complaining about or at least sharing
their strong opinions on. It's the decision to go in
TI because of cold weather.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
So well, you nailed. It's a layup.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Whether they keep whether they're in school, they get, they
get blamed. If they're out of school, they get, they
get trashed. It doesn't matter what you do you're going
to get trashed.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Yep, a thankless position, no doubt. And again reminder whoever
you encounter on a day to day with your child school,
there's a good there's a ninety nine percent chance they
had no say so, so don't take it out on them.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
They didn't.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
They didn't make the decision in.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
T I for kindergartens. Oh he's got his chromebook. It's
so cute.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
He's on YouTube right now.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
He learned how to pleasures must be mousin come.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
Down. He's on YouTube watching blue right now. I guarantee
you or.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Oh, he's he's a he's a son on the old
Trees split screen.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
There's a split screen.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
He's looking at the teacher and there's a video.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
That's what Bully County is built different. We go to
school when it's called outside, so he's in school.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
That are.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
When we have in t I like, Yeah, he gets
his chromebook out and he like sits now he's like
it's like he's going to work with me, but yeah,
he's he's not accomplishing.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Any mispronounced it. We're changing the name of Buller County
to Boule because they're fancy.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Now I like to hear that doesn't sound right, but
I'll take your word for it. Right Tony and Dwyder
next right here, and who's ready to wait?
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Forty w H A s.
