Speaker 1 (00:00):
It doesn't quite feel like Hawaii outside, but I don't
know kinda right, what is it forty forty nine degrees
and early fifty degrees this morning? Yeah, and it's and
it's nice too, you know. I I've often said I
enjoy cold weather, and the cold weather we've had in
early December. I mean, we're not in early December now,
but December. She showed up and made her presence known
right on December first. So yeah, this warmer weather is,
(00:23):
it's pleasant, right. I think we're gonna get some rain though, right,
that's right, that's not good.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
I know it does. I told you you feel like eighty.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
It was just obnoxious Sunday morning when I walked out
of the house, I mean, because my lungs hurt.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
We went from single digits to teens to twenties and
to now we are right near fifty degrees and it's
it's a nice change of pace. And again, I think
we're still expected to be on the warmer side for
the rest of really the rest of the year, it
seems like, which except for Friday. Yeah, yeah, so Friday Friday, Yeah,
we're back to freezing again, right, and then from it.
(00:55):
But it's an isolated day. It looks like that's right,
that's I guess that's encouraging. So anyways, it is five
oh six. In fact, I lot it's five oh seven
now here, and there's Radio eight forty Whas Coffee and
Company field by Thornton's with you for the next four
hours and certainly a lot to get into and you
could take us with you wherever you go. Listen live
on the iHeart radio app. Also listened live at whas
(01:16):
dot com. We're getting closer and the Christmas, the Christmas nerves,
I guess, just the anxiousness. I'm already worried that I'm
gonna somehow forget to get something, forget to have everything arranged.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
But yesterday I did dedicate.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
A good not a good amount of time, but at
least you know, the necessary time to order everything. And
everything I'm ordering that's needed is going to be here
by the date that I needed. So so it says
right now, I mean, I'm hearing all about these delays. Yeah,
but I don't know, man, I'm hearing about all these
delays and I'm worried, and I'm panicking thinking maybe I
should have I should have started even earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Are you an online Christmas shopping guy.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
I do some.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
In fact, I was just gonna bring up what you
were telling that story, and I can bring this up
because my son is no way listening.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
He is out.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
He wanted to Louisville basketball.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Jersey for for forever, and my mom was going to
get it for him. She usually buys it and has
it shipped. I want to give a big shout out
to the folks at the UFL bookstore because he wanted
the white Louisville basketball jersey with the black lettering, and
some of the online retailers only had the red lettering.
So they had it, and my mom went and ordered it.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
She paid for it, and they were.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
So nice down there. They said that we got the orders,
said just come down and pick it up. It's around
the corner. So, like you, I typically order online. Now
I've discovered that there are some things that my mom
if out of town guests, whoever it is, they want
to order and I'll go pick it up.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
That way.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
It's a lot easier because like you, I got nervous.
I get nervous ordering online. So I was looking.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
I don't know if it's just the things I've been
ordering but I feel like for a good I don't know,
three four years, when I would order Christmas gifts for people,
it would be something I could pay for and then
go pick up at the store. Right now, anything I
want to buy from a store is not in said store.
I can't go pick it up because like they're they're
drop shipping it from somewhere. That's just like there's certainly
(03:01):
there's certain things you would typically be able to walk
in and get it, like a Best Buy that they
don't even keep in the store anymore. And it seems
ridiculous because if you could, if you could go to
one store and get it, you would think it would
be that. But people don't go to stores anymore to
where it just doesn't make sense for them to have
a bunch of inventory.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
No.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
And it's misleading too, because a lot of the apps
will tell you, hey, by the way, this is available
for pick up at your store tomorrow, so you think, oh,
it's at the store. No, they drop ship it to
your point to the store and then you.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Go get it.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
There's options you can either have it picked up at
the store when it arrives there, and I guess it
can maybe get there quicker than it can get to
you potentially right or you can go pick it up
if it's already there in inventory it said store. But
I swear the more I look, it just doesn't seem
like they That's always mentioned when you're moving around within
their website to purchase something, But once you get to
(03:46):
check out, rarely do I ever see something that's actually
at that location. And yeah, I'm sure it makes sense
for them to do it that way, but it is
I do sometimes miss the convenience and just the security
of knowing I'm gonna go and grab this, I'm gonna
go physically have this gift or just anything that I
woulder and watch.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Two.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Restocking fees are getting bigger.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Now.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Remember we went through this with the airlines where they
first started charging for bags. Well, retailers now are charging eleven, ten, twelve,
fifteen dollars now to restock.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
The fees if you return it after of course they are.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Sober anyway, you're charging me to put this back on
the shelf so you can resell it.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Come.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
I did, but I did notice, by the way, and
more retails round there where you're talking about retail, a
lot of them already had their Christmas decorations on clearance.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Dude, Yeah, that didn't surprise me. It's about that time.
I get it, John, Are you a big online guy?
I can't see you just browsing at a store for
Christmas gifts.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
No, especially nowadays where especially if you go into a
place like Walmart or not than Walmart, it's like a
typical Christmas shopping destination. But those types of places aggravate
me so much nowadays when all of the workers are,
you know, doing the shopping for people, they're just in
your way.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
Yeah, that's another reason to not go out and do
that sort of thing nowadays.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
That's a new element when it comes to shopping. You see,
you're off and sharing aisle space with somebody that works
there that's that's doing an online order, and.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
They act like they're inconvenienced by you being there.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
That's a great point.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
And those types of places obviously are going to be
busy at times regardless of the holiday season because of
what those stores are.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
But really other stores like a like a.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Coals or something like I wonder what a Coals looks
like now during Christmas season compared to I don't know,
maybe even just you know, ten years ago because you
still I mean clearly they still have things there that
you can that you can you know, you can go
shop there, but like it, we've now hit a point
and we've probably been there more sooner than just this year,
(05:37):
to where it's just when you think of buying something,
it's not a physical going and doing it thing. It's
getting at your device and you know, seeing where you
can get it for the right price.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
And look, it's convenient as can be.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Uh, but you know, uh, there's there's a sports retailer
by the way that makes it very aggravating. And try
to order online because you get a code to check
out and then but the price they give doesn't You
got to put the code.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
In that sound it's like a cane in the rear en.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
I can tell you who it is off the air,
but it's it's I don't use him anymore. And that's
a big reason why I went down to the UFL
campus store and I want to give them a big
shout out to your point, there is something talking to
a physical person in a store who is handing you
the item.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Imagine thirty years ago thinking we'd be here.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Really just praising the fact that you could walk in
a store.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
And buy something. Yeah, wow, Yeah, look how far we've come.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
We can actually show up and get something and purchase
it and physically leave the store with it.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah, it's crazy.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
All right.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
We've got a lot to get through this morning.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Scott'll be back with sports in about fifteen minutes or so,
and a couple of local stories to hit on as
soon as we get back here after this first check
at traffic and weather. Another awful arrest from a school
teacher just doing something that is just unthinkable. We'll give
you the details on that. On the other side right
here at News Radio eight forty whis Rory O'Neil is
(06:52):
going to join us coming up at five forty five,
and we'll get an update on the Reiner investigation. Rob
and Michelle Reiner, of course murdered and now their son
has been charged. She had a court appearance yesterday, and
there's more and more coming out as far as just
where this individual, Nick Reiner, seemed to be mentally bleeding
(07:13):
up to this, which just a tragic situation.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
All the way around.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Also, we'll get an update on whatever President Trump plans
to discuss and announce tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
That was something that.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Of course, we'll come up throughout the morning here as
he's made it clear he's going to address the nation
tomorrow night, So Rory's gonna join us at five forty five.
We've got sports coming your way here in about fifteen minutes.
But real quick, I wanted to hit on a story
that you've probably already heard in our news and of
course it's big news yesterday here in Louisville just because
of the nature of what this is. But a fifth
grade teacher was arrested Monday when she allegedly tried to
(07:47):
meet up with one of her fifth grade students after
having sexual conversations with this student. So, according to the
rest citation, LMPD detectives were contacted by Jefferson County Public
Schools Police. That was on Monday after the teacher, Sydney
Graff from Smyrna Elementary, was reported to have engaged in
sexual conversations with a student during the NTI day. So
(08:10):
a couple of things here. The law that's now in
place that you cannot communicate with anybody, any student unless
it's through an approved communication platform, through your school system,
through the state, all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
So is this teacher.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Conducting inti with students and doing it in that for
I mean, again, regardless of how you do it, what
an awful and just unthinkable thing to do. But this
is somebody who obviously was is is troubled in a
(08:50):
lot of ways, right, And I'm spending my wheels here
because I'm not really sure how to I can't think
I know what I want to say, but I also
need to be I guess, somewhat professional when it comes
to talking about these kind of things. But to not
assume that like this would be I don't know, just
it's shocking to me just to be so brazen with this.
But again, this woman as a fifth grade teacher at
Smyrn Elementary School, and the LMPD detectives reviewed the conversations
(09:13):
between Graf and the student, which included discussions of oral
sodomy with the student, and according to the police, she
planned to meet up with the student later Monday, but
was arrested while picking him up near his home. So
I suppose she thought she was arranging a plan to
meet this student and go pick him up, and she
went and she was arrested, which is good. That's where
(09:35):
she belongs in jail. If of course she's still there,
so she admitted to the conversations right away. It sounds
like when she was questioned by the police. So yeah,
just an awful thing to see and a scary thing
to just know is out there. And obviously this is
not something that you haven't seen before. But man, fifth grade,
(09:59):
and of course, like anything of this nature, when it's
this close to home, it I mean, I have I
have a friend who has a kid that goes to
school there. I mean, just and that person, this sick
individual is roaming the halls with children every day.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
It's just it's awful. But again, the brazen.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Nature of this is just shocking, to say the least.
But in a letter to the families, the principal at
Samirna said that she's gonna be reassigned and won't have
any contact with students during the investigation, which I guess
that's due process. But man, she's already admitted to it.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
So this will go through.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Due process, and I'm sure the process will play out
and she'll be hopefully put in prison and obviously never
be around kids again. All right, let's get to a
quick time out. We'll check on the roadway, see what
we've got early on here. Bobby Ellis will give us
an update on how the roads are looking. We'll take
a look at the forecast two gonna be warm today
with Shay. That's that's all right by me. It's all
right by me. So again we'll get the forecast from
(10:56):
Melosovich and a sports update. I guess we got to
talk about what been last night in Knoxville. Yikes, as probably,
in fact, I think it is. I'm not really sure
if it's close now that I think about it. Tried
not to think about it after last night when I
turned it off. But that's easily the most unimpressive, uninspired
performance of the Pat Kelsey era in a lot of ways.
So only only up from last night for Pat Kelsey
(11:19):
and his team. All right, to stick with us, it's
news Radio eight to forty. Whas So we've got a
lawsuit that has been filed against jcps as.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
This was two months ago. Yeah, I was.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
I thought I had an idea of when high school
soccer season was, and then I started to question myself.
But this was two months ago at a soccer game
here in Louisville at Wagner High School, where a railing
collapsed and injured students and that has led to this
lawsuit that was filed. So five Sanek students have filed
this lawsuit and took place October sixteenth at a playoff
(11:57):
game against Trinity. It was Trinity at Wagner High scho
So the suit names multiple j CPS administrators and companies
tied to the bleachers manufacturing and installation. Uh So, the
students are seeking compensation for medical cost, pain and suffering,
and other damages. So this was of course a story
that we covered at the time because one, it's it's
it's a scary situation.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
It's certainly news.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
But also our partners at WK why they were able
to to just have they happen to be there covering
the game and had they got footage of it, and
it's it's a scary, scary thing to see. And I'm
not somebody that typically just thinks, well, there's a lawsuit,
but I know a lot of people do. But yeah,
this one was obvious as far as just somebody deciding
(12:39):
to take action and and and hold j CPS accountable
for the injuries that were suffered, regardless of of the nature.
So a JCS spokesperson did confirm that that parts of
the field were still under construction at that time, but
the stadium was inspected and cleared for use in September,
So I believe after they ended up moving some of
(13:01):
these postseason games to different JCPS schools that I guess
didn't have the new railing. But yeah, this uh not
a who knows what this ends up, what ends up
happening as far as legally settlement, maybe it gets dismissed.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Who knows.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
But if you're somebody that is involved in eliminating the
financial nightmare that JCPS is going through, this can't this
can't help the situation, right, I mean, you've got sure,
you've got insurance and whatnot. But still they got to
get rid of one hundred and thirty two million dollars
and I still in disbelief about those numbers. I was
(13:39):
talking to somebody yesterday just about how because again, if
you're not if you're not interested in it, if you're
not keeping up with it, because you don't have anything
like it, didn't you know you're not Maybe you don't
even live in Jefferson County.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
It just doesn't relate to you. It, I'll totally get it.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
It's not exactly super you know, entertaining and you know,
interesting stuff, unless of course you're into that kind of thing.
But if you really just look at the pure numbers,
I swear I think you could.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
It's the intrigue is.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Just knowing how they ended up in such a bad
spot with this big of a financial issue where they
were one hundred and eighty eight million dollars short, and
again they've got a trim one hundred and thirty two million,
and the thought of them doing that without the school
district itself completely looking different after said cuts were made.
I just don't know how, like, I don't know what
they could do that we would say, wow, that's extreme.
(14:27):
I didn't expect that. Well, there's one hundred and thirty
two million dollars. They got a clear So I'm not
sure any move anything they do can be viewed as.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
A real surprise. All Right.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
We got an update to the Kentucky State University shooting
that took place earlier this month as far as just
the situation itself, So now we've known of the suspect
that was arrested. He is a father of two students.
So what we know now, I guess, is what that
day looked like as as certainly a situation just escalated
(14:58):
to a point where somebody got out of and fired
off shots and killed one person, injured injured another. So
the suspect, Jacob Bard, he and his wife were on
campus to move their two children out of the dorm
and it was apparently due to safety concerns that their
kids had. So police say Bart's son reported being assaulted
(15:20):
earlier that day and that campus security was already involved
in that situation. So clearly there was something ongoing that
has been said I think by those updating the public
on this investigation. But a Frankfurt police detective told the
court that the family was being escorted by campus security
when they were confronted by another group and the conversation
(15:43):
then moved outside from the dorm, and that's where the
suspect allegedly pulled a gun during a physical altercation and
shot two students.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
So I think you'll.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
See you'll probably expect to see a self defense claim
to where there was already a situation brewing and that
was for safety and they failed. Again, we'll see, but
the defense, I'm sure we'll try to go down that
path to claim that they felt as if they needed
to take action to protect themselves and maybe even protect
their family.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
But yeah, it was.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Something that had been probably not just brewing that day.
But maybe I mean again, if you're moving out because
of safety concerns and you've got your parents there to
help you, I would imagine it's probably not something that
just came up. It may be an ongoing thing that
certainly escalated. But he entered a non guilty plea Jacob
bar did. The forty eight year old who was charged,
and bond has set at a million dollars cash and that's
(16:34):
actually higher than what prosecutors had requested. So yeah, rough
situation at Kentucky State. Now they've had two shootings near
the same residence hall in four months, so obviously that's
not a good look. All right, let's get to a
quick time out. We've got Roy O'Neil set to join
us on the other side, and we've also got trafficking
weatherpates for you to stick around.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
Right here.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
It's news Radio eight forty whas be in company with
you here at news Radio eight forty whas.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Thank you for hanging out with us this morning. Let's
bring him in.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
He's Roory O'Neal of NBC News, Rory, we've got any
new developments here in the Reiner murder case. I know
yesterday there was the first a court appearance by their son.
Anything we learned yesterday that we didn't already know right well,
he was a.
Speaker 6 (17:17):
No show for that court appearance because he hadn't been
medically cleared yet, so that might happen today. But we
did get the formal first degree murder charges filed in
the case. The DA says there is the possibility they
could pursue the debt penalty here because multiple murders are involved. Also,
life in prison without parole is also one of the options,
(17:38):
but they haven't said if they would pursue the debt penalty.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
Look, this could also go to a plea deal and
never go to.
Speaker 6 (17:43):
Trial either, so that whole line is wide open. But
they did release some video as well of Nick Reiner
being taken into custody. Apparently had just recently been to
a gas station. He was found about ten fifteen miles
away from the scene of the crime when he was arrested.
But yeah, otherwise, just again, we have both the show
(18:06):
business world the Hollywood world reacting. In addition, to the
political world reacting both to his murder and the murders
of the Rhiners and some of the President's comments.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
So it sounds like it sounds like, by all accounts,
we already knew that this individual had a troubled past,
had some issues, but it sounds like anybody that was
given any kind of an update on him recently, it
didn't sound good as far as just where he seemed
to be mentally.
Speaker 6 (18:30):
Right, Yeah, something, you know, some people had said he'd
been to rehab fifteen or seventeen times over the years,
the first time when he was fifteen years old, so
this is now thirty two. So this is a man
who's struggled with this his whole adult life. Anyway, the
family remember struggles with this. So yeah, and apparently there
(18:50):
were witnesses who say there was a dust up at
the Conan O'Brien Halloween party on Saturday, and then the
bodies were found Sunday afternoon in their home.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Riy On Neil was our guest joining us here at
news whas So, the US military presence near Venezuela is
growing and the Pentagon is being pressed for some answers.
What do we know as far as just what they're
what they're putting together, as far as just this military
build up and what the plan of action is here.
Speaker 6 (19:15):
Well, look, President Trump speaks to the nation tonight at
nine o'clock I think Eastern time.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
The President will address the nation.
Speaker 6 (19:21):
We believe about the what's going on in Venezuela. He
had that long post on truth Social declaring that there
would be an embargo on those sanctioned oil tankers in
or out of Venezuela, really turning the screws on President
Maduro there, trying to get the regime change. And then,
as you also suggested there, Pete Hegseth announced yesterday that
(19:42):
they would not be releasing that extra video in that
very first strike on one of those drug boats on
September second, Remember they struck the boat. Two missiles fired,
but they say a lot of some large section of
the boat still floating. Two people survived. That missile strike
was seen clinging to the wreckage. The US military went
(20:02):
in for a second strike, firing twice more took out
the boat. But that second strike we saw the video
of the first one. But that second video will not
be released. President Trump said, yeah, go ahead, release it.
Later said I'm gonna let hegset decide if it should
be released, Secretary of Hegset saying yesterday that they didn't
want to release it because it's top secret.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
So I'm sure you've at least heard, or maybe you
won't be surprised to hear that some are claiming that
a lot of this is maybe a potential distraction because
of the the Epstein file released. It's coming Friday. It's
the million dollar quest. I mean, I feel like anytime
there's any potential development as far as people getting what
they want to hear, when it comes to the Epstein situation,
I just think it's going to fall flat. But have
(20:43):
you heard much about that conspiracy that maybe this is
another distraction?
Speaker 4 (20:47):
Did you? I know you did you see Wag the Dog?
Speaker 6 (20:50):
Yes, you know this whole idea of a military alloation
to distract from. So, yeah, this is the idea that
to your point, you have the President having an address
about this large million terry build up in the Caribbean
and about Venezuela Wednesday night, when the Epstein files are
due to be released on Friday. Yeah, it's certainly interesting
timing in all this. I also think it's not very
(21:12):
subtle if that is what's going on, that this is
a distraction. But look, we've got many twenty four hour
news channels, many websites out there that can cover all
this stuff.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
I don't think it can.
Speaker 6 (21:23):
You know, it used to be that you got to
get only so many pages of the newspaper. These days,
I think it's tough to try to bury the lead
on these Epstein files and Venezuela.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
I think we can cover both.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Yeah, bearing the lead and kind of just having hopefully
something just kind of slowly passes by in the news cycle.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
That's harder to do now.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
And man, with something like this, that's really just anytime
it comes up, it dominates interest in headlines. Nobody's just
going to forget about this.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
Well, and not for nothing. It's sex.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Yeah, that matters too.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
You know, that's going to get everyone versus you know,
oh look it's a military blockade on an oil tanker.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Which one are you clicking on? Yep?
Speaker 1 (22:06):
Trust me, that's that's a factor as well. But Rory
is always we appreciate your time. Enjoy the rest of
your day, my friend.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
Hey, thanks Nick, talk tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
That's Rory O'Neal, NBC News. Yeah, and look, I'm not
I'm not even trying. I couldn't lie to you and
