Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is eight oh five here at news Radio eight
forty whas Coffee and Company with you, and we are
fueled by Thornton's. Stop in today you get yourself some
breakfast if you haven't had breakfast just yet. They've got
a lot of good options, biscuits and gravy, a lot
of breakfast sandwiches. My favorite is the sausage, egg and
cheese crossant. But if you want to keep it simple,
you can just get yourself a cup of coffee and
a donut for three bucks. Any doughnuts you want, and
of course they've got the extra large holiday coffee cup,

(00:23):
very festive with the Christmas colors and whatnot. So again,
stop in and see them. If you're in Kentucky, Ana,
there's likely one close to you. And anytime you fill up,
you're going to save money at the pump. Including as
a Refreshment Awards member, you could save up to twenty
cents off per gallon. So again, Refreshing Awards dot Com
is the website to sign up, you can download the app,
and again we are proudly fueled by Thornton's. So last
week we had a change to the holiday schedule for some,

(00:50):
but maybe not even some. So this was last week
when President Trump decided to sign an executive order declaring
Christmas Eve, December twenty fourth, the day after Christmas December
twenty sixth, as federal holidays for twenty twenty five. So
with Christmas landing on a Thursday, that would give some
workers a clean Wednesday through Friday holiday stretch. But is

(01:13):
it too late? So because of what he signed, these
two days are federal holidays in twenty twenty five. In
they're temporary, not permanent. This is not super uncommon. What
would make them permanent? That's going to require Congress, similar
to what happened when Juneteenth became a federal holiday years back.
So you know, my wife, she works, She works a

(01:39):
job to where she would she would probably be off
for a holiday like this, But I don't know if
they've given out any kind of notice. Hey, because of this,
we're off. So I'm not sure how many are are
adding days off because of this recent signature from President
Trump on this executive order. But if so, hell yeah, right,

(02:01):
who doesn't want more time off during the holidays. So
whenever Christmas falls on a on a Sunday, kind of
the worst because there is going to be a day
that you're given to like observed Christmas, and I would
imagine it's probably that Monday, and we'll be there before
too long. Right, Well, we'll have that in the next
few years. But yeah, this is kind of the if

(02:24):
there's one day of the of the of the of
the year twenty twenty five that you would like that
would seem like the most convenient day to take a
day off, is it not December twenty sixth? John?

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Absolutely. I use my final vacation day on December twenty
six this year. And that's saying that's the way to
do it.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Yeah, And I mean if you are somebody that has
to use it or lose it, which we do, maybe
you know, if you could, if you could roll it over,
it's whatever, because like whenever in my previous job, we
we could roll like we could build up quite a
bit and it was some of lot of people took
advantage of. So if you look at these days where

(03:04):
a lot of people take off, you're so close to
the holidays, some people say, hey, I get it, but
like I'm gonna go to work and know that I'm
not using any PTO or any vacation time. But yet
I'm actually not doing anything because nobody else is there.
Maybe you work in an industry that is just very,
very slow and almost non existent during the holiday season.

(03:24):
But because we're talking the end of the year, it's
not like you you save it for I mean, I
guess you could save it for the end of the
year as you get closer to New Year's But yeah,
I can imagine that maybe one of the most requested
days off for folks when it comes to But if
you work at a certain place, like it's seniority, right,
like you may have a bunch of days to burn,
but if you are third in line, you know you're

(03:45):
gonna have to burn it a different day. So yeah,
we're here today, tomorrow, and then really I think we're
we're effectively out the rest of the week because of
Christmas programming, and then we have something playing for Friday
that uh that that'll be here, but it won't be me,
and it won't be the company man John Alden, because

(04:05):
he's taken the vacation that the company gave him. That's right,
So yeah, I uh, that's one of the best. Like
there's a lot of great things that come with the
holiday season, and uh, I just think the slow the
slow down of of a lot of you know, the
the day to day office jobs. It just makes a
little bit more relaxed. And that's uh, that's always It's
always nice at the end of the year. Now, I

(04:27):
say that knowing there are people listening also that hate
this time of the year when it comes to their
job because it's you know, maybe it's peak season at ups. Uh,
maybe you're working retail. That maybe an interesting interview to
do with somebody who has been a lifelong retail manager
getting their perspective on what the malls look like now

(04:47):
compared to what they used to look like. I'm sure
they're still seeing some surges as far as just times
that are busier. But man, I I've actually got to
go pick up some stuff today, so maybe I'll notice
a difference. But late last week, as I was making
my rounds finishing up my Christmas shopping, I was in
the Oxmoor, the Jefferson and the Saint Matthew's mall once
each over a couple of days, and I was I

(05:09):
was expecting it to not be busy, because one, people
just don't go to malls like they used to. And
also we're talking, you know, over a week away from
Christmas and during business hours during the weekday, but it
was a ghost town and at.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
You know, my wife and I are taking Daisy to
get pictures of Santa this afternoon. Awful, you know, especially
with schools being out these next couple of weeks. Often,
you know, if it's any different today versus whenever you
went last week.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Yeah, and John and I were talking off the air.
It's Daisy's first first introduction to the big guy, right.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Oh, yeah, We'll have to see how that goes. I
know a lot of people experience, you know, crying babies.
Daisy's an eight month old. She's kind of she's kind
of a she has awareness of what's going on around her,
but you know, not a ton considering she's under a
year old still. But if I were to guess what
her experience would be like, positive or negative, I think
she'll I think she'll be happy to be sitting on

(06:00):
his lap off to see.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
I think so too. I've met her once. I've never
seen her without that cute smile. I think she'll be
content with with Sannah, which for me, that was my
son's never had a problem. My daughter, she was so young.
The first time around that she was just you know,
she was just kind of whatever about it. But man,
the next two years, I'm not sure we could recreate

(06:21):
or could have recreated at that time images that showed
her more in a panic of get me the heck
out of out of here. She was. She was very,
very frightened. But it fades, it fades, and I'm sure
Santa's used to it. He gets a mixed bag of
reactions from different kids. So uh yeah, I'm believing that

(06:43):
days he's gonna be gonna be a okay, So we'll see.
I'd love to know either way. All right, let's get
to a quick up bit of traffick in weather. Shall
we stick around? It's news Radio eight forty w h
A S So Rory O'Neil's going to join us, coming
up at eight thirty five. We'll get the based on
what the release of some of these Epstein files has

(07:03):
led to from the never ending mission that people have
to I guess convince themselves that that whole situation is
whatever they want it to be. But we'll talk to
Rory about that is at about eight thirty five, So
stick around for that. So real quick regifting I want
to talk about that really quickly, because regifting is something

(07:24):
that I think situationally it's not I don't know why
it's frowned upon now. I think regifting absolutely takes away
you actually going through the process of looking and finding
a gift for somebody that like the personal element is
gone because you didn't go think of something that you

(07:46):
know they would like. You just knew you had something
that you didn't want and you realize, hey, they may
have value in this. So I guess that's why it's
looked at as like a lazy thing to do or
if you like, most people who regift would never want
the person to know that they regis and I get it,
but also like, sometimes regifting can lead to you. I
mean as far as the recipient of said gift, they

(08:08):
may end up with something awesome that if the person
didn't have it to regift, they wouldn't have been able
to maybe afford it. Right, So when it comes to
gift giving, everybody says the thought is what counts, and
I understand that. But there's a new poll that Americans
say they would rather get says A recent pulsays Americans
would rather you just hand them cash and they're not

(08:30):
big fans of regifting, But lifestyle experts say that regifting
isn't always the social crime people think it is. That
was my point. So you know, if you were worried
about somebody being offended that you're gonna that you're gonna
get caught regifting, that's where you need to Most people
just don't care. They're not going to actually take it personal.
So if you still don't want to do it, I

(08:51):
get it. But if you're worry is that they're going
to think that you don't care about them, Like people
at the end of the day don't They may they
probably don't even remember gifts that were ever regifted. Now,
regifting something for like your significant other, that would be
tough to do, Like I can't think of any gift
that I've received that I would then give to my
wife of vice versa. But if you do your Christmas

(09:15):
celebrations with family, like all spread out like most people do,
because you know you can't be at five places on
the same day, Like I know, I've at least gotten
something at my first Christmas gathering and by the time
we got to the end, I've like added it as
a gift that I knew that I wouldn't need, but

(09:36):
I already got somebody else to gift. Why not give
them two? Right now? Maybe at that point I should
let them know that I added it as a regift
so they don't think that I maybe spent more on
them than they did on me. But that's another way
to look at it, right I think it would be worse.
What do you think, John, if if you were regifted
a gift that somebody got and didn't want, would that
bother you at all? And if so, would it bother

(09:58):
you more than maybe you knowing that you gave somebody
a gift that they didn't want and then they regifted
I think that's worse.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, I like it would depend on who's giving me
the gift, but also if it's something that I would
have wanted, because I think sometimes a lot of people
buy things for people that they themselves would also like.
I don't think I would be that offended by it,
but yeah, there's a lot of variable factors that could
go into that, I feel like.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
And everybody's different, so you know, who am I to
say that there's you know, the way I see it
is the way it should be. But I can't quite
relate to those that are out on getting cash for Christmas, Like,
who doesn't want cash?

Speaker 2 (10:33):
You get to pick whatever you want?

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean, And I never have
cash just readily available. I don't keep cash on me
at all times, and if I do, it's not usually
very much. But when I have it, it's already like
you know, it's money already spent essentially. Now again, it's
not even my money. It's a gift. But I don't
know how. I don't know how it turned to where
like if you, like you feel, if I gave somebody

(10:55):
cash money, I had to have a hard time ever
actually truly developing. Oh I feel bad that I that.
Now Again, if it's my kid or something, it's totally different.
But I'm all for any If anybody doesn't know what
to get me, or they're gonna task me with, you know,
thinking of something they could get me, let's just settle
on cash, because that you know, it's a gift. It

(11:18):
wasn't mine. You gave it to me, and I can
use it on whatever I want. I mean, look, I
could like like I could, I could, I could talk
for days. How it's actually the best gift you could
get anybody. Now again takes away I guess the thought,
but I don't know. Maybe it doesn't right because if
your thought is to give me money and let me
do whatever I want with it, you're the best. Like
my wife could not get me any gifts. She could
take money out of our checking account, right, my money too,

(11:39):
and I would think, Wow, what a great gift. Now
I'm not. I don't think she'd ever go with that.
But still cash will always fly with me, all right.
When it comes to buying and selling a home, that
is a process, right, that's putting it lightly, and in
that process you're gonna need somebody to be there for
you every step of the way, and nobody does that
better than Bob Scola and his team at the Socolo
team of Remax Properties. So right now the market, yes,

(12:02):
you may not want to put your house up because
you're just thinking to yourself, well, nobody would buy it
because it's going to a praise for such a high
dollar amount that nobody would would pay that. Well, you're wrong.
I'm sure there's somebody, and there's nobody better at finding
those specific people to target to get your home in
front of than the Cecolar team. So again, when I
say there for every step of the process, I mean it.

(12:23):
You can call Bob at any time on his cell
phone his numbers five O two three seven six five
four eight three. He's gonna he understands there's gonna be
questions that you may have. There's gonna be maybe some
stressful moments throughout said process. He understands that that's when
you may need to pick up the phone to call him. So, uh,
once you go through the Cecolar Team, you'll never go
through anybody else when it comes to buying and selling
a home. You could check out there, check them out

(12:46):
online and we sell Louisville dot com. And again, give
Bob a call any time. He'd be happy to hear
from you. Five O two three seven six five four
eight three against the Scolar team at a Remax properties East,
Quick time out Sports on the way right here, New's
ready wait for the whas all right, We are wrapping
things up here, just a few minutes left for us
and then we'll hand it off to mister Dwight Whitten
Tony vin Eddie. He's strategically used his vacation day, so

(13:08):
he's out. I believe today and tomorrow and of course
the holidays as well. But Dwight, he's coming your way
here shortly. But we've got an update here from the FBI.
So they've got a Internet Crime Complaint Center and says
here that Americans lost seven hundred and eighty five million
to non payment and non delivery scams in twenty twenty

(13:30):
four and another one hundred and ninety nine million that
has disappeared thanks to credit card fraud. So the you know,
scammers are good at what they do, and they seem
to be getting better and better. But holidays it's even worse.
So why holidays are believed to be primetime for scammers. One,
they know that people are busy, people are stressed, people

(13:51):
are expecting packages, people are hunting for deals online, and
that really just ends up being the perfect recipe for
bad decisions. And I suppose cutting corners as far as
just due diligence that you need to do to check
and make sure everything that you're doing online is in
fact legit, right, I just I mean, if it's too

(14:13):
good to be true, it's probably a scam. Yeah, But
this one is new to me, and I feel like
had I not at least read about it. I would
have easily been gotten. So the fake shipping notifications, text
emails pretending to be ups United States Postal Service, FedEx
or Amazon claiming your package is delayed, and it has

(14:35):
a link for you to click on. And if you
are in fact busy, you're worried about your shipping getting
there on time, Like if that's a stress, right, you're thinking,
all right? John Shannon ordered his wife a gift, and
he stressed, if it's going to be there on time already.
Then he gets the notification that it's delayed and there's
a link to click on. I mean, wouldn't you click
on it thinking oh, what do you mean? What are

(14:55):
you doing?

Speaker 3 (14:56):
In a heart I'm trying to help do it here,
I'm in a heartbreak now, you know, in a heartbeat,
I would click on that because I've heard my wife
before say it's going to be late again. Yeah, So
I would just automatically click on it and go, oh wait,
hold on, let me check this out. Because one, I
don't wanted to find out that it might be late too.
I don't want to possibly see the email too.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
And and well, you would just not be surprised that
your package was late, so you would think, all right,
let me down again, what can I do about it?
When in reality they're not letting you down. They just
that's just the convenience of they know someone would be worried,
and then click on that to figure out what their
best options are, and it takes you to a spoof
site to where you think that you're looking at their

(15:37):
real website, but you're not. And then you're asked to
give information that can help them locate your package that's delayed,
and none of it's real, and they end up getting
enough info to where they can they can do real damage.
So never click the link they tell you to actually
go to your your direct website app of the of

(15:57):
the somebody that's selling it. So another one is the
too good to be true social media deals, big discounts,
fake store fronts, and it ends up being a complet
Now again, I not to say that I've got a
better eye than others for it, but I do look
at U R L's, oh yeah, more than I. You know,
just look at the visual presentation of a website to

(16:18):
where because I know you can make anything like look
look legit. That's not so if there's like a typo
or that you you know that you wouldn't notice quickly,
but you'd actually review the u r L. You'll see
you're not at somebody's real website.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
And you know, the working here and being in the
military has gotten me really good at being suspicious of
u r ls to just show up like that, to
the point where to the point where I'm like, I
don't even even if it's a legit when I don't
click on it, because they'll end up coming when we
sent you an email. Oh okay, yeah I saw that,
but you know I didn't trust the u r L.
The one my wife warns me about that I learned
from her is people that tell you that you can

(16:53):
they can only talk to you on WhatsApp. That, Yeah,
that's a scam that runs huge red flag. That's a
scam that runs through the real estate agent, the real
estate brokerages. That those deals that sound too good to
be true. Hey, I've seen your ad for this house.
I've got cash contact me on WhatsApp.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Yeah, if they're asking you to communicate via an external app,
that is not a typical. I mean not to say
that people don't use that, but I mean that's I
just I think they're red flags that are very obvious
to people, and there's some that are very obvious to
not as many people. But you got to keep in
mind with the ability they have to spread their scam

(17:33):
two millions upon millions, I mean, all it takes is
a few for it to be a lucrative thing for
these people, right. I mean that's so, you know, I
try to tell myself, maybe I shouldn't be so judgmental
about the intelligence level of society for falling for a
lot of these, But there's also a lot of people
out there for them to put it in front of.
And I'd be willing to bet that the percentage of

(17:55):
people who don't fall forward is really really high. But
you know, if you do fall forward, it ruin your life, right.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
And they're very convincing with a lot of these because
they'll have the actual official logos or the you know,
the letter head, you know, on on emails. I learned
that in the uh IN when I was in South Korea.
They're really good at emailing you even to like my
government emails. I was getting bogus ones for like Bank
of America saying my account was, you know, in need
of attention. Click on this link to bring everything square

(18:23):
which I never had a Bank of America account, it
was always USAA. But you just got you just got
to be careful. You got to take some time and
slow down, take a breath, and read it. And if
it doesn't sound right to you, if your spidy sense
goes off, then you probably want to avoid it.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Yep. And we can get into this tomorrow because I
know the last couple of years it's been a real
issue where you know, if you're somebody that's getting gift cards,
countless people, thousands of people bought gift cards and gifted
them only to the person who received the gift. They
later learned that those had been drained and it was
the perfect crime for a while because they were able
to get the information on those cards, leave no footprint

(18:59):
and rain them all.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
We got burned by that.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
And you would take it to the store you bought
it from, and they're helpless because they're you know, they're
they're not like they didn't actually sell you that. It's
and again that sounds rich for somebody who's there, Hey,
I gave you twenty dollars Kroger. Why is my twenty dollars,
you know, Amazon gift card not working, and I just
remember seeing really, you know, I mean, it's weird to say,

(19:23):
but like at times, it's impressive how good the scammers are.
I mean, they're they're they should use their uh, their
their intelligence, good, their skills for good. But man, they're
good at what they do, let's for sure. All Right,
all right, we're out of here. Dwight's coming your way next,
so stick around right here at news Radio eight forty
