Speaker 1 (00:00):
I don't know about you, but I've been waiting all

(00:01):
week for this Friday. We have made it. Let's let's
get it started as we get you set for the weekend.
Here it is Coffee and Company, fueled by Thornton's on
News Radio eight forty whas Nick Coffee. That's me Scott
Fitzgerald alongside and the Johns, John Alden, John Shannon. We're
with you for the next four hours again going to
get you set for the weekend. The weekend will start
with a big football game tonight. I can feel that there's,

(00:24):
especially in the last twenty four hours, the feeling that
you get if you're a Louisville fan, or I guess
a fan of any team in this situation where you
realize there's a game that has a lot at stake, right,
there's a lot of currency up for grabs if, of course,
you can cash in and get a win, And that's
exciting a lot. Just just being in that spot is exciting.
I think Louisville fans feel as if they've got a shot.

(00:47):
But also again, when you could, when you know you
could play well and beat nearly you know, let's say,
the majority of college football programs because just how good
you play, but yet your opponent is just that good
to where it still may not be enough. That's sort
of where I'm at right now. But it's Cards and
Canes tonight, Jeff Brom getting a chance to listen to this.

(01:09):
I mean, this is a stat that has been said before,
but I kind of forgot about it. I guess as
an unranked and as an unranked team, which Louisville is
right now, Jeff brom win facing top three teams, He's
three and zero.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
That's amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
It's just the most random, crazy stat that just doesn't
really make a lot of sense other than in that spot.
He's had his teams ready to play, and maybe he
does tonight, but I think they can come ready to play.
I'm not impressed with Miami.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I've listened to a lot of pressers where coaches have
talked about Jeff Brom and it's Mario Christobaul for one,
and everyone says the same thing to your point, Nick,
They're like, for some reason, when he gets into big games,
he coaches his teams to these big games, to that
level and has success at that level.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Not all the time, mind you, but he does.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
And I feel what you're feeling, and I know Cardinal
fans are feeling the same thing this morning. It's like
there's an opportunity right there in front of you, and
that feeling is like no weather. And I went through
this every year with Michigan Ohio State. You know that opportunity,
and John Alden's going through it with Indiana. Indiana's got
a huge opportunity in front of themselves right now. I
mean we're talking national championship opportunity here. So there's excitement

(02:21):
there and you want to see it happen. And on
the flip side to your point, you know the team
on the other side is a.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Good team, and Miami has typically been a team that
you know, they've got talent, and sometimes that hasn't resulted
in them being a very successful team. But even the
successful teams, regardless of coach, they've had moments where it
looks like they've made their way back to the relevancy
or at least getting close to where they once were,
where they strive to be, and they just step on
their own foot and can't get and can't get out

(02:48):
of their own way. I don't think this is that
Miami team. I think Krystal Ball is a good I
think he's a good coach. He gets greaty. He gets
a rap of being a guy that'll just mess things up,
and I really don't know where that stems from, because
I mean, this is a guy who won games at
FI you and nobody else would have been able to.
I mean, he came in here and beat Charlie Strong.
He will remember that or not. So this guy. I
think he's a good coach, and I think Georgia, especially

(03:08):
when you look at sort of where they've been the
last couple of years, it'd be foolish to say that
they were successful solely because of Carson Beck, but they
clearly didn't realize he was a factor in their success
more than they ever wanted to do acknowledge or just
didn't realize, because I think he's added a moxy to
this Miami team that gives him a little more polish,
a little bit more composure. That's what a good quarterback does,

(03:30):
and Georgia clearly just has not been as good without him.
So a big game tonight, no doubt. I was talking
to a former Jeff Brown player who played for him
at Purdue but from here in Louisville, and when it
comes to those moments. As you mentioned, these teams are
just you know, in these spots, they're loose. He made
a good he said, it almost feels like he's your quarterback.
It does. It's like he's one of the players and

(03:53):
they're just he's fearless, and it just rubs off on
those guys. They play loose, and I mean at times, again,
it's hard to envision this happening maybe ever again because
it's rare, but I believe two of those three wins
they have where they're unranked and they're facing a top
three team, they went going away. They kind of just
they get up and they just run away with it.

(04:13):
And I guess that's just the looseness of Hey, we're
not going to get tight and blow this. We you know,
we're confident, we're composed, and we're kicking rear end right now.
You know.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
The fun part about what I like about brom is well,
kid Rock was in ten years ago, Jeff Brown was
at the concert and he was sitting next to where
my buddy and I were sitting. He was sitting next there,
and Jeff Brohm's the kind of guy when you talk
to him on the surface he's your best friend. But
I also I've also seen the Jeff Brohm like after
the Virginia game, when he gets mad, it's like when
your parents get mad at you.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Oh, he's and they sees what you get. There's not
a whole lot of there's not a whole lot of
pre programmed I'm going to show that I'm angry. I'm
gonna show that I'm I'm overly happy, which he sees
what you get. It's pretty genuine. And after Virginia that
presser he was visibly upset, made it quite clear to
emphasize that they gifted fourteen points to the other team.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
And I think that to your point, what you're talking
about here is the qualities that Jeff Brown rings to
the table that when when it's time to get angry,
it's time to get angry.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yep. I will say I feel a little bit trayed
that I've worked with you this closely for a while
now and you're just not telling me you were at
a kid rock concert. You just slough and you were right,
I mean just slotted that in conversation. Me and Jeff browm.
You just happened to be next to each other in
a kid rock concert, like what you should have left
with that I were hanging out backstage, I would introduce

(05:29):
myself to people in Louisville. Leading with that probably just
sounds it sounds bad ass. He gave us a nice
wave and we were good. We were good. All right,
Let's get to a kickupdate of traffic and weather as
we get this Friday started. What we'll do on the
other side, a busy, busy Friday morning it usually is.
Today will be no different. We'll set the table, get
you set for the rest of the way here, but
first again, traffick and weather updates right here, right now,
it is Coffee and Company and we are fiel about

(05:50):
Thornton's on news Radio eight forty w h as. It's
five sevent seen here at news Radio eight forty w
h as Coffee and Company with you, and we feel
about Thorton's. Make sure you stop in at Thornton's to
get your day started. You can get really anything you
need for breakfast, a lot of good options, and of
course the deal that you should take advantage of a

(06:10):
cup of coffee donut just three bucks. If you're looking
for something a little more hearty for breakfast, they've got
a lot of sandwich options, breakfast tacos. So again you'll
be you'll be in good hands if you stop in
at Thortons and get your day started. So a busy,
busy day today. What I want to get to coming
up here before too long is a situation last night
as the high school postseason soccer games going on here

(06:32):
in Louisville, and as I believe it was, Trinity was
celebrating a victory and running over near their their student section,
the bleacher railing collapsed and it looked to be about
I'm sorry, it was say X one zero over Trinity
in that soccer game, and at the end of that game,

(06:53):
and I'm not sure which side it was, but one
of the teams that had run over to where their
fans were the students, and they just I guess put
too much weight and the bleacher railing collapsed and they
fell to the ground. Doesn't seem as if anything is severe,
but at least six students and players were injured, and
from the visual of it, which you can go to
WKY and see that. In fact, I know their social

(07:15):
media pages have shared the video of I guess they
were just getting the shot of the celebration and sure
enough the railing just completely gave way, which was pretty see.
I thought I would have expected more than just six injured.
But I guess that's good. It doesn't sound like it's serious,
but just not a good situation there at Wagner High

(07:37):
School for sure. All right. Also, some of the things
we'll get into throughout the morning here, we're going to
talk with Roy O'Neil at about five thirty five, I'm sorry,
five to forty five, I should say, and get his
thoughts on a variety of things, including the housing market.
You've got rates dropping, but it sounds like buyers are
still being very cautious, which is surprising to me. I
would imagine there would have been countless people just waiting

(07:58):
and waiting and waiting full rates to drop to take action,
but it sounds like that hasn't happened just just yet.
As far as just an overwhelming amount of people looking
to I just assumed there's many people that had put
off moving or buying, selling, whatever it may be, just
because of the market. So we'll talk to him. And also,
if you guys would like to be a part of
the show today and contribute, you can do it. The

(08:19):
iHeartRadio app. We have the talkback line and it is
featured by Alex Rwhite PLLC Sudistractor driver dot com, so
make sure you take advantage of that. Also, we've got
a couple of guests set to join us today. We're
going to be joined eight o'clock. Mayor Greenberg set to
join us here, looking forward to our chat with him,
and then also LLENPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell, he'll stop by

(08:39):
at seven o'clock this morning. So again, we are busy
and we hope you stick with us. A lot more
to come, including a sports update on the other side
from Scott. How about the Bengals last night. I don't
know if they salvaged their season, but a win for
them that I wasn't expecting. And really, what was a
good game? Who knew the old dudes would entertained Joe
Flacco Aaron Rodgers. They might have given us one of
the better games you've had so far this season. And

(09:01):
it is the second oldest quarterback duo whatever play to
start an NFL game? All right, First, traving weather updates
right here right now, New's Radio eight forty WHS. It
is five thirty five hero to Friday Morning News Radio
eight forty whas getting yourself for the weekend, coffee and
company with you, thanks for hanging out with us. So
yesterday was a reminder not to look too much into

(09:26):
two things, I suppose because given the lead up to
the announcement from Mayor Greenberg yesterday, as far as the
update on the Inspector General, I mean, all signs pointed
to him not getting a second term right at Harness
had said that he'd been told it was unlikely that
he would get a second term. He acknowledged some challenges

(09:46):
he was having as far as just cooperation from LMPD leadership,
and when asked for a comment this is probably more
so just what he's supposed to do and what he
has to do. Maybe Greenberg would not comment as far
as just the future of at Harness. And then when
when giving an update, he nominates him for a second
term as Inspector General. So again certainly an important position,

(10:09):
no doubt, but another four year term is what Greenberg
recommends for Harness, continuing his role overseeing police accountability and reform.
So hopefully if there is, uh, you know, some some
issues as far as cooperation or just really more than anything,
just the two sides working together, LMPD leadership and the

(10:30):
Inspector General. I mean for the public, this is what
those two working together to provide legitimate transparency to things
and accountability. That's that's what people want now. I think
sometimes transparency is thrown out there is if everyone is
entitled to every every little detail. There's some times there's

(10:51):
certain things that are going to be kept within because
of legalities and because of criminal proceedings, those kind of
those kind of things. But look, I don't know, I
don't know who would be against there being a specific
role like the Inspector General here that is working to
make sure that there is transparency that the public deserves.

(11:11):
And that's just one of the many things that can
be done that will improve just I guess the community's
perception of of LMPD, and it's tough to know where
it stands overall. Obviously, those that are are not fans
of LMPD and and and have their beliefs that, you know,
every cop is a bad cop, which I don't. I
don't believe there's anybody that actually believes that. But obviously

(11:34):
those that are you know, strong and look, there have
been way too many instances where there's been good reason
for people to point and say, hey, what's going on here?
This is a really bad look. We've had far too
many of those, and I don't even think anybody would
deny that, but I just wish we had more. And
maybe I'm reacting to those that are just loud on
the internet, you know what I mean. But I just

(11:54):
wish there was more of a of a of a
of an awareness that even though there are have been
way too many instances of just at one time there
being an instance of a law enforcement officer doing the
wrong thing, I mean that that's one time too many,
but it's still extremely rare occurrence. When it comes to
the amount of people that LMPD employees, and they're I

(12:20):
mean every day they're out there protecting and serving, and
I think I want to believe most people have some
awareness of that, but stuff to know. In fact, it's
impossible to know. But when it comes to violent crime reduction,
there are more, There are more numbers that show that
there's progress being made there. Again, you're never going to

(12:41):
completely get rid of it. That's not reality, that's not
real world. But I think if you acknowledge the improvements,
but also acknowledge the continuous work to reduce it. I
mean that I think both are worth doing. Right, both
things can be true. You can you can certainly applaud
and feel better to see that there's progress being made.

(13:03):
But also doesn't mean that they can just you know,
eliminate half the half the presence of law enforcement because
everybody's on their best behavior. That's again that's not reality.
They're still they still actually need to grow the police force.
But I think the way it was said a couple
of weeks ago as he was celebrating his first official
year on the job as LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey, there's

(13:25):
never gonna there's no finish line. There's never going to
be a finish line. But some numbers real quick for you. Homicides, carjackings,
and robberies all down compared to this time last year,
and the first Division alone officers have seized nearly two
hundred and fifty illegal guns so far this year, and
again that's that's good progress. Deputy Chief Emily McKinley says

(13:45):
proactive policing is the key targeting focus. Improvement areas or
high crime zones identified through lmpd's Violence Production Plan. So
clearly they've emphasized certain areas that that that have have
gotten out of hand, and they've they've done a good
job seemingly at reducing that. But clearly getting illegal guns
off the street is a huge factor in reducing violent crime,

(14:09):
and obviously that's been a point of emphasis so far
this year. Is to I mean, if two hundred and
fifty illegal guns have been seized so far this year
in the first division alone, I mean, that's a number
that really made me realize how naive I am as
far as just how many people out here have guns illegally.
All right, let's get to a quick update of traffic

(14:31):
and weather, and then we've got Roy O'Neil set to
join us coming up here in about five minutes, so
stick around for that. It's News Radio eight forty WHS.
Happy Friday, Kentuckyana. News Radio eight forty whas coffee and
company with you, and we are fueled by Thornton's and
we are now joined by Rody O'Neil NBC News Rory.
I want to start with the housing market update. We've

(14:51):
got interest rates dropping some and I would have assumed
that those that have been waiting to take action rather
be buying or selling what they were just waiting patiently
for these rates to drop. They would have taken action,
but it doesn't sound like that's happened. Just jet RDD,
it sounds like some home buyers are still being cautious.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
Yeah, their rates aren't quite as good as they were
a couple months ago. They have crept up a little bit,
but still around six and a quarter six point three.
Somewhere in there is an improvement. But what's happening is
the prices are staying high. So even as we're seeing
more homes enter the marketplace, more homes with four sale
signs in front of them, it's still so expensive for

(15:31):
a lot of would be buyers that they're on the sidelines.
And again, a lot of those homeowners are still sitting
on their current house that maybe he has a two
and a half three percent mortgage, aren't quite willing to
give that up yet. So I think a lot of
people are waiting to pounce as these mortgage rates move lower.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
Something that has become I don't know how common, but
certainly happening more than maybe it ever has, is folks
partnering with somebody, not as a life partner, but hey,
I don't want to rent anymore. I want to buy
a home, but I just financially can't do it myself.
On somebody to go in and live together, that's I mean,
it's just like getting a roommate, but again, buying a
home together, that's a big commitment. That's that's a big
time thing. I guess that just speaks to sort of

(16:08):
the market and just how things are financially for a
lot of folks.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Well, right, especially as those rent prices get sky high,
you start running the numbers and you say, well, gee
it it might make more sense now that these rates
are starting to come down. We're also seeing a lot
of weakness in the condo townhouse market as well. Some
of those prices are dipping, so that may motivate sellers,
But pending home sales so where we were a year ago,
pending home sales are down one point two percent year

(16:35):
over year, and the inventory really isn't a balance. We're
at about a four and a half month supply according
to redfin So that's pretty good. But you know, some
of the metro areas that are seeing the biggest year
to year increases in prices. Believe it or not, Cleveland,
where median sale prices are up twelve percent, Detroit of
about nine percent, Providence, Rhode Island up more than seven percent.

(16:57):
Prices are falling fastest in places like ast In, Dallas, Atlanta,
Jacksonville and Fort Lauderdale.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Rory and Nalev NBC is our guest joining us here
News Radio eight forty. Whas President Trump going to meet
with crane President Zelensky at the White House today, Any
any expectation as far as what's to come from this
from this meeting.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Well, this meeting is really all about missiles. Tomahawk missiles
in particular. Those are long range missiles. And you know,
when this war first began, President Biden was reluctant to
give Ukraine. He didn't want to give Ukraine long range
weapons or even planes. The concern was that you give
an American weapon to a Ukrainian they go in and

(17:38):
start bombing the Kremlin. Well, now the Kremlin's going to
get angry at us and suddenly where in the war. Right,
So that was the big factor that the big argument
that the Biden team would make. But President Zelensky is
going to President Trump to say Look, this war has
been dragging on.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Now.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
The only way to start making progress is to have
missiles that are capable of reaching the facilities where they
manage manufactured drones and other strategic sites. Not necessarily the
Kremlin or Red Square, but there are other strategic locations
where longer arrange missiles could be effective.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
So federal grand jury has still been weighing evidence against
former National Security Divisor John Bolton for sharing classified information.
Any update to this developing story as we still kind
of wait to see what the federal grand jury ends
up doing here.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Yeah, Well, they handed up the indictment against Bolton yesterday out. Yeah,
an eighteen count federal indictment essentially accusing him of mishandling
classified and sensitive material. A grand jury in Maryland charged
him with these eighteen counts of transmitting or retaining national
defense information. I think you could get ten years on
each count as a maximum. Now, the defense attorneys from

(18:47):
Bolton will say, look, we went through this back in
twenty twenty one when some country we think it was Iran,
hacked his AOL account and the FBI investigating this learned
about this information that Bolton had been trans essentially keeping
a diary to himself and he would share it with
his wife and daughter had access to this account, and
you know, this is essentially how it would take notes

(19:08):
for the book that he ended up publishing a few
years ago. But mishammling this information now has him in trouble.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
Aol is already in the grave and still taking strace
for I guess the being vulnerable to to getting hacked.
But yeah, I mean, when I hear this, I wonder,
are there those that were in positions previously like this,
that that have done something similar that just think, go, Wow,
I'm glad. I'm glad I didn't find myself in a
war with with the president where you know where you know,

(19:35):
I'm somebody they're targeting to hold accountable because although there's
clearly good reason to not do those kind of things,
I just I don't know, maybe maybe I'm I'm cynical
to think that others would do that and not really
feel like they're committing any kind of big crime.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
Well, look, and of the three who've been indicted, right,
the former FBI director, the New York Attorney General, and
now John Bolton. They say of these three on Trump's
enemies lists, they've got the goods the most on Bolton.
The other two is sort of like made up sure charges.
Like they say that the Age in New York did
making up charges against President Trump. So yeah, they say

(20:09):
those two cases Letitia James and James Comy are a
stretch Bolton. They might have a good time the technically.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Rory, thank you as always for your time. Enjoy your Friday,
enjoy your weekend, and we'll talk soon, my friend. Thanks Nick.
That's Roy and Neil of NBC News. All right, let's
