Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is six oh five here on a Wednesday morning.
Happy hump day to you, Kentucky and this morning News
Coffee and Company. That's us with you here on news
radio eight forty whas and we are fueled by Thornton's.
If you have not signed up yet to become a
member of the Refreshing Awards program at Thornton's, you're missing
out daily savings at the pump. You can qualify to
get up to twenty cents off per week, and of
(00:20):
course that's just one of the countless incentives that you
get for signing up. Do you remember, John, when you
and I first started working together.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
It was my very first day with you.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I think, yeah, it was a tough day.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Was I've moved on from it, you know, It's not
something I have though, Yeah, every now and then I
just kind of think about while they really did pare
me with a producer who is not a member of
the Refreshment Awards program. I mean, just again, we got
you on the straight and narrow, of course, and obviously
it's something everybody should be. If they're not so again,
(00:54):
go ahead and sign up. Refreshing Awards dot Com is
the website and the app is free, so check it out,
all right? Overcrowding at certain JCPS schools. In fact, really
it seems like, well, I guess there's more than just one,
but the Echo Trail Middle School is dealing with an
overcrowding issue that has it's become something that just they've
(01:16):
got to address because it's an issue. I mean, I
can tell you firsthand, schools being overcrowded is an issue
in a lot of places, including where my kids go
to school in Bullet County. That is why they recently
approved redistricting. And I'm one of a handful of neighborhoods
in Bullet County that is going to be impacted by that.
(01:37):
And we are situations a little bit, a little bit
different than others. But even if it is just the
thought of your kid going to a different school and
all that, I get it. And some people move to
certain areas and where their children will go to school
as a factor in the decision to where they move.
So I get all that. Like it's frustrating, it doesn't
(01:57):
seem fair, but like it actually has to happen because
you can't have schools overcrowded to a certain extent. So
the Echo Traill Middle School. The district wants to redraw
the boundary lines for that school and the school itself.
That sounds like there's a lot of pushback from everybody within.
I guess mostly parents, I would imagine, and this is
(02:18):
a newer school, and look, I could parents will do
whatever they can. Most parents, I think, to get information,
to get input on which schools are good schools for
their kids, which schools are believed to be those.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
That maybe aren't doing great.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
And it's just human nature to want to put your
kid in the best situation possible. So whenever there is
some flexibility to whar hey, you can go there, but
there's no bus that'll take it, you got to find
a way. Well, some parents will make it work because
they truly want their kids to be in the best
school possible, and that leads to overcrowding. Now again, sometimes
overcrowding happens for other reasons. In fact, there's always a
(02:57):
variety of reasons that you end up with a school
having more students than it was typically than it was
built for. But you can't have school, I mean, you
simply can't not address it. But the WDRB news team
they reviewed district data comparing which schools in JCPS are overcrowded,
(03:19):
and it says that nearly thirty schools are over capacity
while more than twenty are less than sixty percent full.
Think about that, You've got twenty schools that are less
than sixty percent at capacity.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Now, the top of.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
The overcrowded list is Atherton High School, which is running
at one hundred and twenty percent capacity, about one hundred
and fifty more students than the building was built for.
And then you've got Ramsey Middle School coming in at
with one hundred and seventeen and then Echo Trail, this
new school that is just under that at one hundred
and fourteen percent. And then there's also a bunch of
other middle elementary schools Saint Matthew's Elementary, medor Elementary for
(03:55):
In Creek Elementary and Low Elementary are the elementaries that
are overcapacitated, and then the empty seats. Western High School
has space for more than fourteen hundred students, but only
four hundred are enrolled. Think about that school's built for
fourteen hundred, they have four hundred enrolled.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
And again I.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Believe that as a product of with JCPS. I mean,
I don't know the specific rules, and I think at
times rules aren't enforced consistently because I know when it
comes to sports.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
I mean, if you end up getting if you were
able to go to a school and they.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Hold you out, a family will hire an attorney and
usually you get it. You get the ability to do
whatever you want. So I'd be shocked to find out
that there are countless parents that are lining up to
have their kids go to Western High School. I say that,
knowing nothing about Western High School. I say that knowing
those numbers tell you that if it was a school
(04:57):
that but hey, one of their kids to go to,
that number wouldn't be at four hundred when the school
was built for fourteen hundred. So this is not sustainable.
I don't know how you fix it, because again, JCPS
has always been much different than the school system I
grew up in, in the school system that my kids
are in, because you know, obviously JCPS is the biggest
school district in the state, and it's not close but John,
(05:19):
where you and I grew up, it's pretty clear.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
You live here, you're going to go to school there.
You live there, you're going to go to school there.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
And JCPS like it's much different. And you know why,
you can't just have a simple hey, this is where
you live, this is where you go to school. Again,
it all ties back to things that took place decades
ago with the whole bussing situation. So I just think
the more parents have access to information and the more
(05:45):
I guess transparency that there is out there about each
school and how it's doing, and some of that's unfair,
but perception is reality.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Let's be real.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
So I think you're going to see these schools that
I guess aren't believed to be doing well, they're going
to continue to lose students and with that you lose
interest in teachers wanting to be there, that kind of stuff.
So again, I don't have the perfect fix, but overcrowding
in certain schools is an issue everywhere for a variety
of reasons. But I think one that I can certainly
tell you I've seen is that if you give any
(06:14):
flexibility for parents to determine whether their kid's going to
go to school, and the options are this school's believed
to be great, the other is not, they're going to
find a way to get their kid in the good school.
All right, quick update of trafficking weathers on the way,
and we'll keep this thing rolling along right here on
news Radio.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Eight forty whas.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
So, the Better Business Bureau is warning folks out there
that there's a new scam and it's called ghost tapping.
So if you use tap to pay with your phone
or card, this scam is something you should should be
aware of. It's hitting people in public places and they
don't even realize it. Scammers are good at what they
do and they're always going to be around and they'll
(06:53):
move on to once. I guess it's a little bit
easier to detect those that are pulling off various scams,
right if there's a way to break through whatever they're to,
whatever they're doing and keeping it hidden to where they
they can stay anonymous and nobody really knows how to
trace it, they'll move on to something else. And if
(07:15):
some of these scammers out there used their expertise to
do something productive, they would be very successful. And you
know what that would be contributing to society and not
taking advantage of people or ripping people off. So ghost
tapping happens when scammers secretly charge your tap to pay
method like Apple pay, Google Pay or contactless card without
(07:35):
your consent. So the BBV says it can happen in
crowded spots, events, or even during distractions where someone can
get close enough to trigger a tip.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Or a tap. I should say, I mean.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
To me, that just seems really hard to pull off
bumping into you while secretly triggering a charge. Fake vendors
or charity stands asking you to to tap for a
small amount but then charging more, rushing the payment process.
I mean, I just can't think of many scenarios where
I would have my phone out to do some type
(08:14):
of transaction and somebody could bum. I mean to me,
this seems like a way more difficult and advanced way
to pick a pocket right like it's I mean, I
think it's difficult. That's difficult enough to where people can
can can within a crowd take your wallet in your pocket,
may maybe even like tightly to your pocket and you
(08:37):
not even notice it. I mean, we had that the
Bourbon and Beyond, and I believe both Bourbon and Beyond
and Louder than Life, there were stories of many people
who just randomly lost their phones and didn't know until
they didn't have it, and the law enforcement said that
that it was clear that people who do that they
targeted these events because it brings so many people in
such a big crowd to where you you know, it's
(08:58):
it's a gold mine for you if good at what
you do. But as far as somebody ghost tapping, I don't.
I mean, nobody's close enough to my phone where they
would ever be able to do that. Now we'll say
I did see a story the other day. In fact,
I watched the the body cam footage of the arrest.
There was a one of the one of these stores
that sells phones. It's not you know, it's it's uh
(09:22):
who it is. It's not important, but it's not you know,
it's not one of your AT and T or Verizon
or T Mobile. It was one of those cheaper services
that that you see where it's not as much of
a commitment, probably like a month to month. And a
woman came in to to get her phone looked at
because she was she was older and didn't know how
to use it. I guess she couldn't get apps to
(09:43):
download or something like that's something simple to fix. And
then to get it fixed, she just took it to
the store. Well, the associate at the store told her that,
you know, they needed to go check on something with
her phone. And I'm assuming this person realized that they
may be able to take advantage of an old person,
but they realized that on this phone that this customer
brought in there was Apple Pay or maybe it was
(10:07):
what's the other Apple pay venmo Zell. Have you heard
of zel John, Yes, that's why. Yeah, so it was Zell. Well,
they were while attempting to I guess fix the phone,
this associate sent four hundred dollars to their Zell from
that phone, and while the customer was waiting, they got
a notification that they did just been charged. And I'm
(10:29):
hooked on this bodycam video that ended up on YouTube
because I'm just thinking to myself, how could you deny this?
And how stupid are you to assume that it wouldn't
be obvious people pay with Zell. I think only on
mobile devices. They've handed over the mobile device for you
to fix. They have a notification set up to where
I guess maybe on a watch. My guess is that
(10:51):
it was an older lady that they just assumed because
she couldn't get her phone to work. Shooting another thing
about technology, and I mean it was just that to me,
is not really scamming, that's just being a really stupid criminal, right.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
But it amazes me to see.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
When approached by law enforcement about the allegation and the situation,
to play dumb like I don't know. All right, we've
got an update of traving the weather on the way.
We've also got another sports update. Come on your way,
and I hope you stick around. Please do. I welcome you.
I invite you to join us for the rest of
the morning here on news Radio eight forty whas. Happy
(11:31):
hump Day, Thanks for joining us here on news Radio
eight forty whas. It is coffee and Company, and we
are fueled by Thornton's I've met a few people ask
me over the last couple of days if I think
there's any remote possibility that Jeff Brown would leave Louisville
for one of the big jobs that's already opened or
one of the big jobs that's likely to open. I mean,
(11:53):
right now, as we talked about yesterday, John, you've got
Penn State, Florida, Virginia, Tech, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Stanford. I
feel like there's another one in CLA. Yeah, U c
l A. But there's a good chance. I think that.
I mean, actually, let's let me let me let me
start here with you in the big in the Big Ten,
(12:14):
are there any I mean Searan Moore?
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Is he safe?
Speaker 2 (12:17):
I think for now yes. I think even if he
finishes the season in it with the mediocre record, I
think he'll he'll he'll often have results next year.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Though Michigan State may open.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Yes, especially if they keep them. They've lost four in
a row. They're not looking down.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
At and by the way, Michigan State is the is
the kind of program that is a good job, but
it would not be a good time to to go
look for a coach given the market, right.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
So uh, the last Big Ten job that I think
will come open is Wisconsin. They're They're absolutely horrendous. It's
about as bad as I've ever seen in Wisconsin team
and Luke Fickle. I can't believe how bad he's done
up there.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
They they're they're right there, which is crazy to say
about three weeks ago, four weeks ago, u c l
A was the program that was viewed as the okay,
like every year there's one power for program that is
just a free fall and there's nothing that's going to
surprise you, and now UCLA is three and one in
the Big Ten. Now that's become Wisconsin who they're they're
(13:15):
fade worthy if you know what I mean when it
comes to sports betting to be because they're just they're
they're a disaster. They're they're they're a d has said
he does support Luke Fickle, but that doesn't mean if this.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Thing keeps I think the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Yeah, so and again the ad is apparently also a
guy that that that may be fortunate if he keeps
his job because of some decisions he's made. So anyways,
if you are a program Michigan State, Wisconsin, Kentucky, you're
a it's a good job when it comes to the money, right,
and that matters because you have money that you know
(13:51):
makes you very wealthy, but also money that will come
in to help you buy players and have success. That
is clearly a very important factor when it comes to
having success in college football. So, uh, in the SEC,
I mean, I don't think it's crazy to think that
that you that uh that Auburn comes open. I mean
you've got Gus smells On publicly saying it would really
it would really mean a lot to him if he
(14:11):
got a public you know, nod from his a D. Like,
that's weird behavior from a coach, right, I mean usually
coaches they hide their insecurities not well. But he's like play. Oh,
he would be great if a f R I D
would would just tell me that he's that he's confident
in me, which you can odd behavior L s U.
I don't think Brian Kelly would get fired, would he.
(14:31):
But if there is a program that just decides, yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
We're we're we're who we are L s U. We
know what we.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Have to offer and we'll go I mean we'll go
get anybody we want. I mean that may not be reality,
but L s U is one of the best jobs
in the sport and one of the best programs to
where if they finish, you know, five hundred in the
sec maybe they just feel like, Okay, this is run it.
This thing has run its course. With uh with with
Brian Kelly.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Maybe they can bring back Edwardron now that they can
cheat legally.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, I mean it's a good point point.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
I mean he was the I mean, what a random
one off season that our guy at our guy coach
oh had So anyways, I think these jobs are are
clearly wise to have Brahm on their radar these programs,
I should say, because he's I mean, he's he's a good.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Coach, right.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
I mean, Louisville would not have got Jeff Bram if
there wasn't the obvious connection, and luckily there is. But
I mean, he was in the Big Ten making a
lot of money. They were never gonna let him go
due to money. They had enough money to pay him
really probably whatever he wanted. But Louisville is a rare situation.
So because of that, I think it's just it's just
(15:39):
hard for me to I don't want to be the
guy that's like, never, there's no way. He just loves
Louisville because I know what that sounds like. But isn't
it true also, I mean like it's it's I mean,
he has I mean Louisville football. It's in his DNA,
quite literally. I mean his father, Oscar, was one of
(16:00):
the quarterbacks here long long, long ago. Not to age you, Oscar,
but I mean they're the first family of Louisville football.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
There's me again.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
I say this all the time, when Jeff was at Western,
when Jeff was at Purdue, and if Jeff never came
to Louisville. It was impossible for him to not keep
up with and want to see Louisville do well. He
would never obviously let it distract him from game day
when he's coaching Purdue, but I've heard stories of I mean,
it was just an known thing that he was going
(16:31):
to make sure he knew what was going on with Louisville.
Maybe not a priority that day, but it's impossible for
him to not care about this program deeply. And a
lot of coaches they care about a job if they've
built something special. Let me give you an example. I
think Devil Sweeney cares about Clemson because he turned the
(16:52):
corner with him what a couple of national titles to
where it's not just a job for him. But that's
the case with Braun, but to a different level because
again and he and his family, the family name kind
of helped build it to what it is. Look Jeff
and Brian, they came to Louisville before it was the cool.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Thing to do.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
They came to Louisville when it was almost unheard of
just because of where the program was. But that's what
Louisville means to them. So I think they'll be interest
I just can't see him leaving. But there is one
job that if it were to open up, that wouldn't
worry me, because that would be an exaggeration. It wouldn't
worry me, but it would at least be one that
(17:32):
I think he would have a hard time not at
least considering. I'll tell you what that is coming up
a little bit later on, but as of right now,
I mean, I don't. I just have a hard time
envisioning something playing out to where he leaves Louisville for
another job. But this may surprise you. I've been wrong
before about things. It's crazy, I know, all right. Tracking
a weather updates on the way right here on news
(17:53):
radio eight forty WHS. As I look here at the
woky seven day forecast on on the television in front
of me. We we've got the next four days the
high and not getting above sixty three. So obviously that's
going to lead to some cold temperatures when it comes
to the lows. In fact, this morning cold to get
the morning started, and last night once the sun went
(18:14):
down it was it was chilly. But there is a
there's some up there's some I guess recommendations on things
you can do to winter prep your car that that,
I guess can go a long way. I'm very fortunate
that that I'm able to park in the garage not
only each each night in my home, but also in
(18:34):
in at work here Obviously it the garage is covered.
I mean, it's still going to be cold in the
winter whenever we walk to our car, but much different
than if it was just sitting out where it's it's
just you know, in the open. So I'm fortunate, but
I know a lot of other people aren't. So one
thing to keep in mind is temperature, temperatures drop higher
pressure that that obviously is is I think a no
(18:55):
brainer that when you get it gets cold out there.
Don't be surprised when you leave work and you walk
out to a parking lot, you see one of your
tires look a little look like it's losing a little
bit of a little bit of air. Also, check the
tread of your tires because when road roads gets slick,
that's when you'll know if in fact your tires are
in bad shape. Wiper blades that is the worst. Actually
(19:17):
that's a low key like if your windshiew wipers if
they suck. You'll notice it in the rain too, but
you'll really notice if it's if you're trying to do
the defrost or if you're trying to get rid of
like a slush or a sleet substance that's coming down.
So just keep that in mind. Also, this is something
(19:39):
that I know so many people probably still do, but
it's illegal to leave your car running in your driveway.
I mean, is that enforced. It's I'm sure I can
find examples of it, but I just have a hard
It's like it's almost like jaywalking, like that's technically something
you shouldn't do, but are you going to get sided?
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I feel like it might be a bigger deal if
you're doing it, like at a public place like a
gas station, like if you leave your car running while
you go inside to you know, buy a lottery ticket
or something.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
I mean, I'm sure a lot of people do it,
and they've done it and have always been able to
just it's just routine for them, but it's something. But
I mean there are people who do it with kids.
I mean, like that's leaving them in the car, but
then when it's running, and I guess you know, with
you could leave it running but also have the ability
to lock and unlock with technology now. But still, I
(20:32):
mean I would never be able to leave my car
running under any circumstance because I would just have fear
that not even that somebody's gonna steal it, but like
just that something's going to happen. So anyways, that's that's
another reminder here listed that if you want to warm
your vehicle up while you're getting ready for work, it
technically it's not something you're allowed to do, which again
(20:52):
I'm sure a lot of people don't realize that or
just don't care because it's not like it's a common thing.
People get hit with an officer driving by and decided
to you know them all right, let's talk about Windownation
with that cold weather on the way, In fact, it's here.
In fact last night might have been in the night
where you realized that that chilly air is sneaking into
your old, cracked, stuck windows. Well, there's no better time
(21:16):
than now to get that taken care of. With my
friends at Windownation, they have some of the best window
replacements out there installed in just one day or less.
Think about that one day or less. They're gonna come
out there and get everything installed, and they're also going
to go through a really in depth process of installation
just to make sure that the windows are installed correctly.
They're stuck in there to where you're not going to
(21:38):
have any any issues, and every window, if you do
have an issue, just know it is back with a
lifetime warranty. So again, the product speaks for himself. Speaks
for itself. They have three million windows installed nationwide, a
plus rating for the Better Business Bureau, over forty five
thousand and five star reviews at wind Donation, So the
product speaks for itself. So take advantage of the deal
(21:59):
they've got going on right now. This month only you
bought two windows, you get too free with no limit.
Two windows you purchase those, you get too free and
there is no limit. Even better, you make no payments,
no down payment, and no interest until twenty twenty seven.
I trust Win Donation and you should too. And again
timing is on your side. Don't be a procrastinator. And
if you know you know that your windows need replaced,
(22:21):
don't wait until it gets even more cold outside and
you're miserable and this deal isn't there, So go to
win donation rightwindnation dot com right now, and make sure
you take advantage. I mean, I can't you imagine not
taking advantage of this opportunity to get new windows. It's
such an affordable and cheap cost and also backed by
lifetime warranty. I mean, couldn't be me not taking advantage
(22:44):
of this. All right, Well, we'll get to a weather update,
forecast update, I should say. Also we'll check on the traffic.
So far, so good, but again that can always change,
so we'll see if if I don't know get why
do I get Rory mixed up with traffic? I don't
know why I always do that. We ask enough of Rory,
we don't need to give him another job for us,
(23:05):
So apologies, Bobby Allis. He'll get us caught up on traffic,
so stick around right here. Also, we've got a sports
update coming up on news radio weight forty whas
