Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's get it started. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome in.
It is Coffee and Company, Kentucky and his Morning News
with you here on a Tuesday morning, the final day
of September. That's correct, right, I didn't start the show
off with a lie, did I had September thirtieth, which
means tomorrow will be October first? And where's time gone?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
It's fast?

Speaker 1 (00:19):
I know, fast, brother, or already in October.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
You know we're gonna be You're gonna running down basketball
season here before too long.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
I get started this month, there will be well, I
guess you know, starting tomorrow that month. But is it
green day? Wake me up when September?

Speaker 3 (00:32):
It is?

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Okay? Yeah? I how did that become such a that's
not to me, that's not like that interesting of a
of a line, like it's not really that clever, to
be honest with you, I'm not really sure why anybody
included it in a song Wake me Up when July ins,
wake me up when December ends. But that became like
such a thing to where there'll be many people probably
playing that song today or singing it because of course

(00:54):
it's ending. And I guess there's some type of cold
action to wake folks up as they I guess. I
guess what it means is that they're just that excited
about October, right.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
It is, And I think, to give you any stort,
I was looking ahead at the eight to fourteen day
out looking Usually when you see the blow normal temperatures
on the West Coast, they do work their way to
us eventually, and this is the first time in about
three weeks now I've kind of seen that on the
West Coast. So hopefully, as per our conversation yesterday, you
get your cooler, your cooler weather's moving in.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Bro.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Yeah, it did not feel like we were getting close to
October the last few days, and looks like that's going
to be the case from now until at least probably
the closer towards the end of this week. But that's okay.
Anytime I complain about that, I do realize quickly. I'm
reminded by folks that I know that they want to
hold onto this warm weather as long as they as
long as they possibly can, and I get it. Everybody's

(01:44):
got their own preferences, and I'm sure there will be
moments for me in the fall and certainly winter where
I'm thinking, Okay, you know, I'm a little bit I'm
a little bit old this cold weather, especially now that
I have to get up so much earlier than I
have in previous winters.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
It's it's rough, but you know it's like everything weather changes,
so you know, we'll get our hoodie weather, we'll get
our fault weather. To your point, it was funny because
Mysson actually texted me and goes, and you know, anybody
has got Kansas tickets? I want to come in for
that game. He's already hyped about basketball season.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Dude, yeah, that will be And by the way, how
about great timing for both Louisville and Kentucky here, because
well more so Louisville because the fact that they're playing
basketball this year. The Louisville Kentucky the annual rivalry game,
the fact that it's going to be played before the
two play in football will never not feel really weird
to me. In Louisville, They've got this Kansas exhibition game,

(02:35):
but before other than that, they don't have any real
tune up right. Kentucky will play, I believe in the
Champions Classic. I think that'll take place before the actual
rivalry games, So both teams will have somewhat of a test.
Of course, Louisville's test is it's not a real test.
It's not a real game. However, it'll at least get
you battle tested to an extent. But you're right, October
is going to be here tomorrow. And really that I

(02:56):
mean basketball season. It started as far as practice, and
it really does fly by once it gets rolling. I
remember for the many weeks we just kept thinking, here
we go. Football season is gonna be here. It's gonna
be here. It's on the way sooner rather than later.
And then now we are a month end.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
I will tell you this, it's really nice with the
cold weather. I don't mind it when I come down
here and go to like a Louisville game and it's
it can be a cold, brutal walk with the wind
weamens or the buildings. But man, when you walk in
at Young Center and it's warm and you hear the
squeak of the cleats and it's just the Young Center's
got an awesome vibe. And that's what's cool about the
winter season. When you can walk in and especially going

(03:31):
to a basketball game, it just has that cozy, intimate
feel to it.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
I think one of the reasons why for me, I've
just found myself more content and enjoying life whenever we're
in the winter months is because of things like what,
I don't care if it's what the weather is during
basketball season, because I'm just so happy that it's basketball season. Right.
Those kind of things distract you from from whatever, you know,
temperature you may be wanting to avoid. But ye, yeah,

(03:54):
last day of September and we'll finish strong here. There's
certainly a lot to get into. We found out more
about the shooter in Michigan as far as just the
background of Thomas Jacob Stanford I'm sorry Sandford, so we
can certainly get into that and a lot more. I
don't know if you guys have been following this or not,
but there's another YouTube TV dispute, and this time around

(04:16):
it is NBC and it sounds like the deadline for
that was is tonight at midnight and of course October first.
If they don't get something worked out, NBC will no
longer be, at least for the time being, available for
you to watch it if you're a YouTube TV subscriber,
which I'm one. So this is the second I guess
dispute they've had in recent months that has led to

(04:37):
a lot of worry that you know, you're going to
lose access to a channel that there aren't many of them,
but it's a channel that has live NFL games at
least once per week, and people not having that will
be a problem for a lot of people.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Does that include Peacock too, like, because Indiana's on the
Big Ten is on a lot of Peacock chair.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
I don't think you have to. I could be wrong.
I don't know if you know watch so when I
watch Peacock over the weekend with Indiana, John did as well,
I didn't have to. Maybe it's because I've already done
it before, but I didn't have to do anything as
far as telling I have a Peacocks subscription anyway, it
is not tied to my TV subscription with YouTube TV,
so that probably led me to be able to bypass it.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Gotcha, So all right, well we'll see.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
It's just like you said, though, yes, Sunday Night football.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Right now, just envisioning people who don't really follow this
stuff that closely all and then they just try to
watch Sunday Night Football. They want to hear Carrie Underwood
waiting all day for Sunday night, and they get there
and then they're underwhelmed.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
I mean, football night in America is a big stable
in our house as we're cleaning up the kitchen, Yes.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Sir, so real quick, we've got an accident on Waterson
Eastbounds just past Dixie that is blocking the right lane.
It doesn't look like there's a whole lot of issues
just yet as far as traffic. However, keep in mind,
once more people get out and about, if they don't
get that cleaned up, it could cost some issues. So again,
Waterson Eastbounds just passed Dixie blocking the right lane. It's

(05:54):
five eleven here in news Radio eight forty whas so
we now know, oh, the background of the forty year
old shooter that killed four people in Michigan over the weekend.
So it was at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter day Saints in Michigan where this took place on Sunday.

(06:15):
And of course I'm sure by now you guys know
the story. This guy drove his vehicle through the church's
front doors, opened fire with an assault rifle during services,
and then also started a fire with gasoline. Four people killed,
eight others remained hospitalized. So Sandford, Thomas Jake Sandford, forty
years old, that's the name of the individual here. He
was a Marine veteran served from twenty I'm sorry, two

(06:38):
thousand and four to two thousand and eight, including deployments
to Iraq in two thousand and seven and in two
thousand and eight. So the motive according to the White House,
FBI director Cash Betel said that Sandford harbored hatred toward
members of the Mormon faith. So more about his personal history.
Michigan politician Chris John said that she told him last
week that he disliked the Latter day Saints church, claiming

(07:01):
its followers quote believed they were above Jesus. He previously
lived in Utah dated a woman in the church, but
the relationship apparently ended over demands to change his appearance
and his lifestyle. So he also recalled Sandford admitting to
drug struggles after returning from Iraq. He has since given

(07:21):
a full statement to the FBI and to Michigan State Police.
So it sounds as if from what was said by
Cash Betel, is this is somebody who clearly disliked Mormon
faith and it seems to be from a personal situation
where he was with a woman and was I guess
encouraged to make some changes to his parents' lifestyle, and

(07:42):
I guess that put a strain on the relationship. And
I guess you could maybe safely assume some other issues
that he had from his time serving in Iraq could
have contributed to him in this position. But again, I'll
never be able to relate to somebody taking this kind
of action, regardless of what they're going through. But unfortunately,
there are many that have done this over the years,

(08:04):
and just I feel like maybe this story was shared
fifteen twenty years ago, we would we would read this
and then think what am I missing here?

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Right?

Speaker 1 (08:16):
You'd think, okay, well that's unfortunate, But how do you
get to taking this kind of action because of going
through that? But it could be anything. I mean sometimes,
in fact, it's probably not that uncommon when something like
this happens when you know of no legitimate gripe or motive.
And again, I think it's always going to be tricky,

(08:37):
And I wanted to be tricky for me. I wanted
to be uncomfortable for me to not to just not
be able to in real time comprehend how there's any
there's no motive that would ever make it make sense,
especially for a mass shooting like this with innocent people
who seemingly this guy has zero connection with it all

(08:58):
other than just knowing that where this church was, he
was very bothered by by that faith. So yeah, the
eight people that remained criticized, that remain hospitalized, I'm not
sure if we know of just how severe their injuries are,
but here's hoping that there's no more deaths from this

(09:21):
awful situation. All right, we've got an update of travicking
weather coming your way. Again. We did have a little
bit of a rough start this morning with an accident
on sixty four I'm sorry, on Waterson East near Dixie.
But it sounds like they've got that cleaned up. So
that's good news. Right off to a rough start, but
already getting it cleaned up. That I don't know who
to give credit to, but credit to whoever was responsible

(09:42):
for getting those roadways cleared off to get people up
and at it, work, school, whatever, wherever they're going. All right,
we've got a sports some day coming your way. Also,
something else I want to get to before before too
long is a story out of GE. There's nearly one
hundred and fifty GE appliance workers that have been told
to self deport after Trump ends the Biden era program.

(10:06):
So one hundred and fifty folks at GE client's park
here in Louisville again being told they need to self deport.
We'll talk about that and a lot more as we
move forward here on a Tuesday morning, the last day
of September here at news Radio eight forty whas. So
we've got another high stakes standoff unfolding between YouTube TV
and another big network, and that is NBC Universal. So

(10:30):
the current carriage deal is set to expire at midnight tonight.
So that's one of those things that you probably wouldn't
really care or notice unless you're somebody that often watches
NBC for whatever content it may be. For me, it
would really just be Sunday night football. But other than that,

(10:51):
I mean, I'm not somebody that really consumes that network
a lot. And NBC is one of those stations that
has won NFL game, but you know, it's not Fox
and CBS that has a couple on each day, So
I would notice that it wasn't available to watch on
my YouTube TV. But it's a little different as far
as the worry that I had as somebody who would
clearly be wouldn't be noticeable if like ESPN was not

(11:14):
available because of the Disney dispute that took place a
couple of years ago, and most recently it was it
was Fox, And of course they got that straightened out
without any real issue, any real hiccup. Nobody went without
any big time college football games, and certainly nobody went
without having access to any of the NFL games. So
usually these things get worked out, and wouldn't be shocked

(11:36):
if before the show ends this morning they've got it
figured out. But we shall see. So right now, this
is from this is this is from let's see one
of the John Oran I think it's how you say
his name urand but he he covered sports media, so
he's he's covering this from the side of, you know,
the NFL issue. If there's no NFL games for those

(11:57):
who pay for YouTube TV, and of course with that
includes NBC, that could be the real issue. But YouTube
TV pays more than ten dollars per subscriber each month
for NBCU channels, yet Peacock runs promos at just twenty
five dollars a year. That's I guess the tension here
as far as just a dispute as far as who's

(12:18):
paying what. So if no deal ends up getting reached
before midnight, NBC channels would vantage from YouTube TV, which
again includes Sunday night football and college football broadcast. I'll admit,
other than other than Notre Dame and also Peacock, what
games are on NBC. I mean, I know that the
NBC has certainly gotten into football. More so than that,

(12:39):
there's been a shakeup where like CBS has no SEC anymore.
So I can't tell you. I don't know if I've
ever watched a game on NBC that wasn't a Notre
Dame game.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
The Big Ten has a bit of a part of
their contract involves NBC and CBS, as you just mentioned,
So it's either Notre Dame or the Big Ten usually
on NBC for college football.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
So those are actually on So those aren't just Peacock.
Those are like Indiana Iowa could have been on NBC.

Speaker 4 (13:04):
Now India before was an game?

Speaker 1 (13:07):
Gotcha? That that makes sense. I just haven't haven't tuned
into one yet. Is that relatively new? I guess the
last couple years, last year, Yes, gotcha. So YouTube TV
says they're going to issue a ten dollar refunded customers
if NBC content disappears for an extended period, which that's
that's all they can do, of course. But again, usually somebody,
somebody caves in this game of chicken, and we'll see, uh,

(13:29):
we'll see who it ends up, who it ends up being.
I mean, I can't remember any time that I've actually
gone without something that I paid for and felt very
you know, I felt like an unhappy, disgruntled customer. But
it can certainly happen. And again, we just had this
conversation leading up to the start of the NFL season
in college football season because of the Fox dispute. But

(13:52):
I don't feel like this one got as much attention
as the other one. I don't know. Maybe it's just
because they assumed it would get worked out, or maybe
maybe there's just not as much of it. Again, Fox
having at times a couple of different NFL games every
every Sunday. That and of course Fox also has had
some college football games for a while. But maybe the
lead if you remember one of the biggest games to

(14:14):
start the season in college football and I don't even
remember who it was, Ohio State in Texas. That was
a really big start of the That's a big match
up regardless of when it's played. But it also was
the first big game for Fox as they have made
some investments, and of course they're trying to compete with
with ESPN with College Game Day and whatnot. So yeah,
tonight at midnight is the deadline deadline. So again, if

(14:37):
you're somebody that you know, maybe maybe maybe it's not
even sports related, maybe you're maybe you're wanting to make
sure you don't miss any Law and Order SVU. Just
I guess look out for the news today because it's
gonna be news one way or the other that you're
gonna lose it or they got it worked out. Did
they still make Law and Order SVU? I'm sure they do.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
I know they have all the Chicago shows like Chicago Fire,
Chicago p D and all that.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
I mean, anytime I watched Sunday Night foot Ball, I
see a pro I see Olivia Benson and Elliott stable
A still being still being pimped out on NBC. So
they're doing something with SBU, which again I haven't watched
it in a long time. But hey, if it's still successful,
I get it. I get while they're still doing it.
All right, we've got a quick update of traffic and
weather coming your way here on this Tuesday morning. Also

(15:20):
we'll join we'll be joining about Roy O'Neil from NBC.
He's going to join us coming up here in about
five minutes, so we'll get the latest on the expected
government shutdown. So keep it locked right here on News
Radio eight forty whas Coffee and Company with you here
on Kentucky and this morning news News Radio eight forty whas.
Let's go to Rory O'Neil, who's joining us now here

(15:41):
of NBC. Rory, what can you tell us about this
government shutdown that is looming? It seems as if it's
it's really potentially going to happen, and maybe there's some
late negotiations that prevent it from happening. But what can
you tell us about the latest here?

Speaker 3 (15:56):
Yeah, tonight's the night this would all begin. It's the
end of the fiscal so tonight would be the night
of the government shutdown, just after midnight, and it looks
like we're on our way. There are a few last
minute things that could happen to perhaps delay things. But
a meeting in the Oval Office yesterday with the Big
Four and the President, that's the top leaders in the
House and Senate and the President didn't really get a

(16:19):
whole lot of results. Republicans are just trying to go
for a continuing resolution that would continue the current spending
through November twenty first, giving them more time to negotiate.
Democrats are trying to undo some of the stuff that
was part of the Big Beautiful Bill before they agree
to anything. The two sides seem pretty far apart right now.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
Is that where the Democrats are firms? They just they're
still so bothered and uncomfortable, seemingly with some of the
things in that Big Beautiful bill.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
Yeah, and look, both sides seem firm, right. You know,
we've heard from Republicans who don't really have a lot
of wiggle room either. Chuck Schumer and ha King, Jeffries
really do want to get these carve outs in here
to bring back some of the subsidies for the Obamacare
programs there's they're called. You know, some twenty million people

(17:09):
could lose their healthcare coverage if the Obamacare subsidies aren't extended.
Of course, the subsidies were created really during the pandemic
to help people pay for their insurance bills. But the
Republicans are saying, look, that's a valid issue, let's talk
about it, but let's keep the government open first and
we can let's address those kinds of issues later.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
I'm sure there's some people this is, you know, out
of sight, out of mind, if it doesn't impact them directly,
they're not paying us close attention. But federal workers, I mean,
this could have real ramifications for a lot of people.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Yeah, a lot of those federal workers might start losing
their paychecks until you know, they'll get back pay and stuff,
but they may see their current income go off a cliff. Also,
the Trump administration has sort of said, look, when we
start furlowing people, some of them may not be coming back.
That a lot of jobs may be cut as an
opportunity here to say, well, look, if it's not an

(18:01):
essential function of government, why do we fund it. We
should only be funding essential fund functions of government.

Speaker 1 (18:08):
Royal and ILLIVINBC News is our guest joining us here
on news radio eight forty Whas President Trump also recently
met with Israeli president that was yesterday. Do we have
any is there any any sign that there's progress? Do
there potentially being peace in the Middle East? Here?

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Well, it seems that they got Israel to move a
few inches in this deal that President Trump was touting yesterday.
He's very excited about it, it seems, but we have
yet to get Hamas to say it's on board. It's
a twenty point plan that would include things like Hamas
surrendering its weaponry, turning over all of the hostages, and

(18:46):
again twenty different points here. But you know, Yaw who
may have some trouble on his right in his own
country trying to get this thing through, so he doesn't
love everything. But that's a good sign. But we haven't
heard from Hamas as to whether or not they're going
to a and obviously that's a big sticking point. The
Kataris are trying to help us get this over the
finish line. It also does set forward a path for

(19:08):
reconstructing Gaza. You know, that's something more long term as
they try to find a way for these two groups
to live together.

Speaker 1 (19:16):
Rory, as always, we appreciate your time. Hope you enjoyed
the rest of your day, my friend. We'll talk soon.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
Thanks Nick.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
That's Rory and elv INBC News. Yeah, when it comes
to the government shutdown, I know that there are many
people that realize just how important this is and how
it could impact them directly. But for those who it
won't necessarily change anything about their day to day, at
least in the early stages of the shutdown if it happens,
and of course, depending upon how long it happens, this

(19:42):
is I mean, we're talking about national parks, passport processing,
small business loans, some services that veterans receive. These are
things that could be suspended or slowed, and of course
the longer it drags on, the worst the ripple effects
are going to be. So certainly a big deal. It
sounds like tonight's tonight. As Rory said, all right, quick break,
We've got traffick of weather updates on the way. Another

(20:04):
sports update on the way as well, right here on
