ESPN fifteen thirty. This is since e three to sixty.
Chad Brendall in for one more day, Audie. If he
decides to leave Green Bay, it sounds like he might
not as much as he enjoyed it there. If he
does leave Green Bay and come back home today, Audie
(01:06):
will be back with you tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
We've got plenty to get to.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
We've got the Bengals falling twenty seven to eighteen to
the Green Bay Packers yesterday in lambeau Field. We've got
the Bearcats with their twenty to eleven victory over Central Florida.
Cincinnati moving into both the AP and the Coaches poll
(01:32):
at number twenty four this week, So they go on
the road to Oklahoma State and then if they can
take care of business there potentially a ranked Cincinnati team
playing at home on homecoming next Saturday. So a lot
of good stuff from the Bearcats going on this weekend. Unfortunately,
(01:56):
we start the show with I'll do do my best
to get through this the passing of the great Jim
Kelly Junior.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Jim was UC football.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
If you follow UC closely, you know the UC Athletics
Hall of Fame is named after his dad, Jim Kelly Senior,
who played for the Bearcats in the fifties, the forties
and fifties and was an administrator and a part of
the university for a long time. Jim played for the
(02:39):
Bearcats in the mid seventies. He was the leading pass
catcher on the team for three years. In the late
eighties nineteen eighty eight, Jim took over color commentary duties
on the radio broadcasts. He had thirty five seasons on
the radio. He was around for all of the nineteen
(03:03):
seasons that I've been on the beat.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Jim was the best.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
He was the nicest, most genuine guy you will ever meet.
He was you see football that there was nobody, and
I legitimately, I think I can and there's a lot
of hyperbole when you do this stuff, I think I
can genuinely say there's nobody that cared about the health
(03:33):
and well being and success of UC football more than
Jim Kelly. He grew up in it, he was around
it his whole life.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
He was.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
He was there when times were tough. He also got
to experience some of the greatest moments in U SEE
athletics history.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
There will be few things ever.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Like a big moment in a UC football game with
Dan Horde on the call and Jim Kelly gleefully shouting
yes into the air, pumping fists, giving high fives, and
genuinely enjoying what a program that meant so much to
(04:33):
him was able to accomplish. From my perspective, Jim had
time for everybody. Any time I ever asked him if
he wanted to join us on one of the Bearcat
Journal podcasts, many times he joined me on these airwaves
(04:54):
as a guest to talk You See football.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Whatever it was, Jim was always happy to do it.
And that was.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
From the newest student reporter on the beat that maybe
walked up to him and wanted to say hello, or
wanted to pick his brain, or wanted to learn about
UC football to you know, people that have been on
(05:24):
the beat in nineteen years. As most of you know,
because of my wife, I have unfortunately been around cancer
a lot over the past decade. When Jim was diagnosed,
(05:46):
there were a couple times in practice he pulled me aside.
He wanted to pick my brain, wanted to talk about
some of the things that he was going through, that
he was experiencing, some of his fears about things, how
(06:09):
to prepare his family, and we'd stand aside to practice, and.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Uh, it was.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
It was my pleasure to be able to assist him,
given how much over my career he assisted me. It
was heartbreaking was he was at practice quite a bit
through camp and he was fighting his ass off, and
(06:47):
when the news got out that that he was stepping
away and that he wasn't going to be in the booth,
you kind of had that sense that that things had
taken a turn for the worst and.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
That Jim was entering the.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Backside of that fight. And when I got the news
this morning, I was heartbroken. Heartbroken for Jim, heartbroken for
his wife, heartbroken for his family, for all the UC
fans that he that he touched over the years, not
(07:31):
only with his call of the game on the radio,
but how many of them have mentioned they saw him
at an airport or they they My uncle yesterday said
he met Jim a couple of times, not not through UC,
even though he's a huge UCY fan, but met him
(07:53):
a couple of times out playing music and had great
experiences with him. Then Jim was a guy that would
before home games walk through the tailgate and just stop
by and visit. You see fans that would that would
shout out and say hello. I know there were many
(08:21):
that got to see him in South Bend as he uh,
from everything I heard, UH tried to make up the
time he had to miss while he was in the
booth celebrating with the u SEE contingent in South Bend.
(08:42):
I didn't know Jim as well as Tony and Dan
and Moe, but I knew him really well, and he
was a great man. He was a great friend, and
he was you see football and it sucks that he
wasn't able to be in the booth for much of
(09:05):
what has been happening over the past month. It sucks
that he won't be there to see the Bearcats for
the rest of the season. Sean McMahon is in the
booth today producing. Sean, I know you've been around the program.
I know you've got Jim Kelly stories.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Too, man. I mean, what more can you say about
a guy?
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Just an upstanding person, just the nicest guy you'd ever meet.
You know, when I was working for U SEE football
during my time in college, you know those twenty eighteen
twenty nineteen seasons, you know you'd bump into Jim and
he was always just the nicest dude. Or you know,
(09:50):
you go to the radio shows that we do at
Montgomery in he was always walking around with the microphone.
He was the one handing the microphone to people to
ask questions, the coaches or to the you know, head
football coach, and just he was always such a friendly guy.
You know, he just was an outstanding person. And you
(10:12):
can't say enough good things about him. And you know,
my steepest sympathies go out to him and his family,
and you know, all of us that knew him. It's
it was horrible news to wake up to this morning.
I mean, at least for me, Chad. I you know,
I didn't know Jim very well, but I do know
(10:34):
a lot about his character. And you hear a lot
of high profile people saying the absolute best things you
can say about a person in regards to Jim Kelly,
and that's just a testament to the kind of person
that he was. And man, it's just it's a shame
that we have to you know, that we start the
(10:55):
week on such a sour note, because you know what
a guy he was, Like you said he was, he
was UC football yea, And I think if I have
the number correct, I believe seventy eight consecutive years Kelly
was a member of the athletic department at UC and
that is remarkable. There's no denying that Jim and his
(11:19):
family left in an indelible mark on that program. They
will always be fondly remembered by those who have come
through that program, whether it's players, coaches, staff, anybody who's
ever had the privilege of meeting the Kellys. Just you
(11:41):
can't say enough good things about Jim, and it's just
a shame that he's gone and he'll be missed by
by all of us.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
The good news is, Sean, he got to go out
on a win.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Yeah, he got to go out on a five game
winning streak. He didn't have to see the love of
his life outside of his family in one of those
downturns in his in his final days and weeks. And
(12:13):
it's going to be really difficult over the years, not
having him at practice anymore, not listening to his stories
about the program, not not getting his observations on. You know,
I would go to Jim Oladele. I'll let you inside
a little secret, Sean, I really don't know anything, right.
(12:37):
I observe things, and then what I do is I
generally go to people that do know things, and I
ask them how on or off base my observations are.
And Jim was always one of those sounding boards that
would be honest. A lot of people just kind of
(12:58):
tell you what you want to hear, am I seeing
it's right? And if Jim didn't agree, say you know what, Jed,
I don't know. I see it a little bit different
this way, or I see this position group maybe a
little bit short here, or or I see this position
group because I think they're going to overachieve, because I'm
seeing some things that give me hope that that the
(13:21):
arrow is pointed up and to be able to have
somebody like that that no matter what you could go to,
you could you could bounce ideas off of you could
you could get incredible insider information and expertise. That's how
you make it in this business. It's it's because you
(13:43):
have people like Jim Kelly that are willing to help YEP.
And I'm heartbroken, Yeah, genuinely heartbroken. It's been a rough morning.
I'm gonna get through to the show today, but I'm
gonna take a break right now. I don't think I
wouldn't feel right. Just okay, let's get right into it.
(14:06):
So I'm gonna leave that segment for Jim and we'll
take a break. I'll get my crap together, and when
we come back, we'll get into twenty seven to eighteen.
Last night, the Packers beat the Bengals and uc UCF
and plenty of other things. But look, I know a
(14:26):
lot of you have Jim Kelly stories. I would love
for you to leave a talkback if you had any
encounter with Jim any experience with Jim what he's meant
to you calling Bearcats games, listening to his voice screaming yes, yes, yes,
into the microphone as the Bearcats scored a touchdown or
made a big play, or knocked off Notre Dame, whatever
(14:48):
it was. Leave those in talkbacks. Phone lines will be open.
We're guests free today. I didn't have it in me,
so the phone lines will be open. But Sean, let's
let's go ahead and take a break and we'll get
to some other stuff when we come back. But for now,
rest easy, Jim, good, miss your buddy. This is Sincy
(15:13):
thirty sixty on Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
Now your chance to win one thousand dollars entered this
nationwide keyword on our website.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
Check that's the check enter it.
Speaker 7 (15:24):
Now's Football in the Natti, brought to you by Postman
Law on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the
Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
All right, thanks to thanks to Katie Walters for getting
me some tissues.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
I think I'm better.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
I'm not, but I think I'm well enough that I
can try to do a radio show. Truth be told,
my heart's not in it, but the show must go on.
It's been a rough week for that. It's been a
rough three shows for that here in the palatial Kinwood Studios.
But the show must go on. Bengals fall twenty eight
(16:19):
seventeen to the Packers or twenty seven eighteen, sorry, twenty
seven to eighteen to the Packers.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
I am not.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
I am not overly negative today about the Bengals last night, yesterday,
late afternoon, early evening. The offense was dreadful in the
first half, dreadful in the first half. They have one
yard in the first quarter total. But new quarterback, couple
(17:00):
days of practice, throwing him out there against one of
the better teams in the NFL, a team that many
think has an opportunity to contend for a Super Bowl,
and the defense kept them in the game for the
most part all the way up to halftime.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Ten nothing at halftime.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
When your offense has played that terrible, that is a
pretty good place to be if you're looking at the
you know, the chances in the second half of staging
a comeback. It was not a situation like Lions the
week before, where yeah, the Bengals made a little bit
(17:45):
of a comeback late, but that was that was a
game that the Lions are just trying to get to
the finish line. That was not a game that really
the Bengals had a chance to win. I thought defensively
in the first half, they put up a fight. They
(18:07):
put up a good fight, forced a couple punts, got
an interception, held the Packers to a field goal on
a twelve play seventy one yard drive. So you come
out Green Bay as a twelve play forty seven yard
drive that ends in an interception, and then a twelve
(18:29):
play seventy one yard drive that ends in a field goal.
This is not a great Bengals defense. This is a
Bengals defense that has flaws. This is a Bengals defense
that what we saw yesterday is probably about as good
as it's gonna get. Teams are gonna move the ball.
(18:56):
The talent is not there to just man up and
lock a team down. But if you can get off
the field and opportunity situations, if you can win some
third downs, if you can get a couple turnovers here
and there, you can give your offense a chance.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
To make things happen. Now, we'll get to this later.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
One thing that we saw, especially in the second half,
this team can't be as bad tackling as they were yesterday.
You're already at a talent deficiency. You have got to
make sure you can control the things you can control.
The Bengals tackling was not good, and it gave the
(19:41):
Packers repeated additional opportunities, additional yards that when you're not
dealing with a super talented defense, that kind of thing
can be your undoing. And I think a lot of
that stuff in the second half where they just couldn't
get off the field. I mean they first half interception,
(20:02):
field goal, punt, touchdown, punt, second half touchdown, touchdown, field goal,
end of game.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
It's tough, makes it tough.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Joe Flacco came alive in the second half, made some plays,
got the ball to Jamar Chase. He did, he knew
the assignment, and as a result, the Bengals were able
to claw back into it.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Let's hear from Joe Flacco after the game.
Speaker 8 (20:36):
Thought the first well, I thought as an offense, we
settled in h you know, probably sometime in the second quarter,
and not that we were able to get over the
hump in that quarter, but we we came out and
played a good a good second half you know, but
usually against a good football team, it's playing one good
half isn't gonna be good enough. But we gave ourselves
a chance down the end, and I think we did
(20:57):
some good things.
Speaker 6 (20:58):
But just not enough early on help put the side down.
Speaker 8 (21:02):
Listen, I think we settled down a little bit, started
to getting a little girl them. I think that first
drive really helped. I mean, anytime you can keep a defense,
it's not easy when you have to go twenty plays
to score a touchdown, but anytime you can keep a
defense on the field that long, it is to your advantage.
I think you can wear them out a little bit.
And you know, we it's not like we ran the
ball for a ton of yards. We did have some
pretty good runs in terms for first down conversions, and
(21:24):
you know, you can start to you can start to
feel the physicality of of of us kind of pick
up as the game went on.
Speaker 9 (21:31):
Drive did you like just youll getting used to being
on a new team.
Speaker 6 (21:35):
I probably settled down a little bit, for sure. I
thought that there was at least one or.
Speaker 8 (21:40):
Two where I where I could have taken just quicker
to the short one. But also, listen, they're a good defense.
You know, so you got to give them a little
bit of credit. And it's just kind of how it
was that she quite.
Speaker 10 (21:56):
Able to make that catch with yours.
Speaker 11 (21:58):
I based that catch for you then you made Yeah.
Speaker 8 (22:03):
Listen, you're still I mean after after the two point
a version, I was pretty pumped up. But in the moment,
you're just trying to keep it simple. Take it for
what it played, one play at a time.
Speaker 12 (22:15):
You know.
Speaker 8 (22:16):
I kind of kept telling myself that on the sideline today.
You know, don't get don't get too high in this environment.
Just kind of no matter what the scoreboard says and
what's going on, just remember to continue to play each play.
And and look, I mean this league, if you're if
you're able to do that consistently, then you're gonna put
yourself in it down the stretch, you see now that Yeah, yeah,
(22:40):
I mean I I came over the sideline a couple
of times. I was telling Jake, like just the way
they plucked the ball out of the air, Like I
threw a I threw like a quick out route to
Jamar and I didn't get the ball great and it
was like an awful spiral and he still just caught it.
Like with both hands. And then the one the one
that I can think about to t uh. We hit
(23:02):
him on a like little like inside slant route for
a third down on I think on that first drive
of the second half, and a lot of guys would
go down and kind of catch it with their body
and slide and and he just plucked it right out
of the air with both hands.
Speaker 6 (23:15):
It's pretty impressive to see those guys go fourth down.
Speaker 13 (23:18):
That was that an act?
Speaker 6 (23:23):
The fourth down for the touchdown? Which one was that?
The one in the back of the end zone, the
one that you had? Were they both fourth down?
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (23:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (23:31):
Uh they came up and pressed them.
Speaker 8 (23:32):
We had, you know, so we had we we we
we were able to take a shot.
Speaker 6 (23:36):
And I mean listen, obviously, when when he gets one.
Speaker 8 (23:39):
On one, you'd be you know, I think you'd be
wrong a lot to not go his way obviously.
Speaker 10 (23:46):
There jumping into a team and situation and the.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
Fourth stun loss, I think you have to be losses.
Speaker 10 (23:54):
But you see, I think today open recentable meeting.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
Fast hand for sure, for sure.
Speaker 8 (23:59):
I mean, listen, this is a long season, and I
know it's easy to be down on yourself in hard times,
but you know, playing with confidence shows, so we got
to find a way to kind of get some of
that back. But I think we do have the ability
to do that. Listen, we got a big week coming up,
and you know, these division games are always good matchups,
(24:22):
and going in and playing a good game this upcoming
week could help a lot with that. I think today
probably helped a little bit, but you know, you still
want to.
Speaker 6 (24:31):
Win the game.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
There you go, New Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco, and I
thought he looked good in the second half. I thought
he was decisive, didn't turn it over, only one sack
against a really good defensive line. That's what this team
is going to have to do if they're going to
be successful offensively, is get the ball out quick, keep
the chains moving. It's it's probably going to result in
(24:57):
maybe more of those ten twelve fourteen yard fourteen play
drives then this offense maybe would like to see. But
they moved the ball and he got it out and
they were incredibly successful moving up and down the field
(25:18):
in the second half. So you hope that is more
of what's to come. Here's the thing for me to
kind of set the tone for the day on this
this team wasn't beating the Packers. The Packers are a better,
more complete football team. They were playing at home. This
(25:42):
was ninety nine percent going to be a Packers win
anyway you sliced it. But the next four Pittsburgh, Chicago,
the Jets back to Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
There's winnable games in there. And if they're gonna get.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
This thing on track, it was always going to be
over that four game stretch.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
The question now becomes.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Did they get enough out of the Packers game to
go into this game against Pittsburgh Thursday night and win
it and then maybe build some momentum. And I think
we saw enough in that second half to say, Okay, Flaco,
(26:28):
while not perfect, can be a guy that makes this
offense functional again, because it has been dysfunctional for a month.
For a month dysfunctional. And there was something in that
second half that you could see the wheels turning. And
(26:50):
I think that's enough reason. I'm not gonna say optimistic,
that's enough reason to have interest and where things are
headed from here. Like I said, phone lines are open
all day. We can talk Bengals, we can talk Jim Kelly,
we can talk Bearcats, we can talk whatever the heck
(27:11):
you want. It's kind of one of those days. Let's
take a break. We'll go to the phones after this.
This is since the three sixty a service of Skyland, Chile.
Speaker 7 (27:19):
You've been listening to Football in the Natti on ESPN
fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 14 (27:31):
Excuse me, I know.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
You bos So they begin from the ten.
Speaker 15 (27:37):
They will line up with two receivers out live to
the left, one almost out of bounds, one receiver out
to the right. Keillan Gabriel takes a hand up Cloles
and he didn't stept in I'm not darker with a
pick sex.
Speaker 16 (27:52):
He stepped in front of the intended receiver, got two
hands on the football Fuxton at the ten and raced
into the enze to give Cincinnati the lead.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
How about that.
Speaker 17 (28:06):
That's film study there, and that's a athleticism.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Gardner doing a phenomenal job.
Speaker 17 (28:11):
Tip the ball up in the air, he was able
to corral it and take it into the enzi.
Speaker 15 (28:17):
A true freshman from Detroit, his nickname is Sauce, and
he's given Cincinnati the lead over eighteenth rank.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
You see up hearing the.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Wind Shooler call of the day. Could you imagine a
world where we didn't know his nickname was Sauce. It's
an actual it was an actual place back then. No
clue in twenty nineteen that his nickname was Sauce. I
(28:49):
called that play by the way, Sean, did you standing
on the sidelines?
Speaker 18 (28:56):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (28:57):
Looked over to the person's stay ding next.
Speaker 19 (29:00):
To me.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
And staid, I'm feeling a pick six here, feeling to
pick six here, and sure enough, Sauce takes it to
the house.
Speaker 4 (29:11):
You know what's funny, Chad was at that point I
was working that game. The guy next to me filming
the game said a very similar thing right before.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
Any other headphones around here anywhere, Sean, because the headphones
I'm using just went out. Oh really, I was gonna
take some calls. Now I can't hear anything. Well, hang on,
oh I got hope, I got it. Okay, they're back.
We'll see how long this lasts. But I love the
equipment around here. In the commercial break, I'm gonna need
(29:41):
I'm gonna need some headphones.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
I got you.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
Let's go to Mike in l A. Mike Leant's talk
about Jim Kelly. Mike, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (29:50):
Mike? Are you there? All right? We'll hold on Mike,
Tom and Green Township. Tom.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
No, I can't hear I can hear myself. I'm not
hearing the phone. There we go, Tom, How are you?
Speaker 20 (30:10):
Uh?
Speaker 13 (30:10):
This is Jims from Green Township? Can you hear me
out there?
Speaker 3 (30:13):
I can't hear you? What's going on? My friend?
Speaker 21 (30:17):
You can?
Speaker 3 (30:18):
I can? Yes?
Speaker 13 (30:19):
Good, I want to. I'm on a cell phone and
is you? And I both know celluar technology. He has
a mind of its own.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
It does.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
But we're good right now. These have a mind of
their own as well. So it's kind of a double
assed sword right now.
Speaker 13 (30:37):
All right, I've heard your voice, but I don't know
your name? Are you Joe's there?
Speaker 3 (30:44):
Using No, I'm Chad Brindle, Joe Bengle.
Speaker 21 (30:49):
What a name?
Speaker 13 (30:51):
Well anyways, not only with Jim and Machine Gun Kelly
the color voice of the UC beer football team, but
if you also loved to move and groove and rock
and roll, he was the lead guitar man for Oola
La and the Greasers.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
Yes he was.
Speaker 13 (31:12):
Remember the team, the old taste of blue Ash. Yep,
they would be the warm up for the grassroots or whoever.
All these one o three point five would bring in
Jimmy Machine Done. Kelly and his teammate and high school
buddy Danny Hauser were right at their center stage.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
I talked to jim many times about his love for
playing guitar and playing music in front of people around
the city.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
He loved it.
Speaker 13 (31:40):
Oh man, He even uh, I think I think he
did this with his granddaughters or something that he had
a He had a little trio called Kelly, Fran and
Ollie and they played it and they played at Reading
Historic Canig Park once.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Very cool.
Speaker 13 (32:04):
Anyways, anyways, Jimmy played alongside such former Crusaders stands out,
says Kenny Kirkhoffs, Randy Keith, Mark Daniels, Danny Hauser. My
older brother has got to be student managers for the
(32:26):
football team. In fact, coach Fix said, and one of
my brothers.
Speaker 20 (32:30):
You're too small, I can't use you.
Speaker 13 (32:33):
How would you like to be one of my managers? First? First, uh,
my brother was out there discouraging with the team. He
was really hustling. And you know how, you know how
Jerry and whistle and yell outs in and call you
call you my last name over here, and Jared go there.
Speaker 20 (33:00):
Looking great out there, kid like what I see and
I can't use you too small, And then after a
whispered to hail Mary, he'd say, I'd like to be
one of my managers.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
That's great, all right, I appreciate the call. Thank you.
Speaker 13 (33:18):
My brother Tom became buddies with Jimmy machine Gun Kelly.
And also when the Crusader's own Leopard Stadium, practically Jimmy
was probably instrumental Punt intended. He was instrumental in getting
(33:40):
me the place opened up for the Crusaders to play
some of the most famous comeback wins and fought in
nineteen eighty. I won't if for any listener remember how
(34:01):
we have the Crusaders beat the Nasal and Washington Tigers
at Nipperd Stadium for the nineteen eighty state championship.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Yeah. I appreciate. I gotta get moving. Thank you. All right,
Let's go to Mike in La. Mike, how are you.
Speaker 22 (34:22):
You got me?
Speaker 3 (34:23):
I got you this time?
Speaker 21 (34:25):
Oh boy, Well, I hope you're well hoped family as well.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
It's not a good day, Mike. It's not a good day.
Speaker 21 (34:31):
Big condolence Jemma for his soul and for his family
and from the heart, Kelly family. This is one guy
that says thank you for Jim's contribution to society in mankind,
thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
Yeah, he was. He was one of one, Mike.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
He was one of the nicest, most genuine humans I've
ever been around, and I'm going to miss the hell
out of them.
Speaker 21 (34:58):
Yeah I was.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
I was.
Speaker 21 (34:59):
You know, I knew Jim was having some problems. I
had no idea what the extent of it was none
of my business, but kind of took me. You got
me on that one this morning. So how old was
mister Kelly?
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Trying to remember exactly he was? Seventy Gosh, it's slipping
my mind.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
My brain is kind of much. I think seventy four, so.
Speaker 21 (35:28):
About my age then really seventy three. So I don't
know why the hell I'm around and he ain't. That
don't make any sense. But anyway, I'm looking forward to
the playoff tonight. Dodgers and Brewers. Those Brewers are pesky
little rascals from the jump by. Don't think how they
win games with most of the pictures that they got,
(35:49):
which aren't really they're good, but they got a couple
of good ones. But you know, Otawani and Freeman for
the whole playoffs are hitting about a buck eighty. This
tells you the depth of that line up, especially the
bottom three with Kei k Hernandez tom Yet and then
all these guys. I had to just have all the
high priced guys, they got all them a bow crap,
you don't even know what you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
His hits so far in the playoffs against the Reds.
Speaker 21 (36:14):
Probably, oh, he probably wish that they were still playing
the rest right now. I mean they found out, well,
we know that Phillies lew that game. That poor kid
on the mound, he just got all be fuddled. And
evidently the team, the team itself thinks a lot of
that young guy and they didn't bust as you know
what about it. So but you know, that's just a
(36:37):
lot of pressure when you're twenty two years old or whatever.
You are very happy for the Bearcats excellent. But my
anticipation is this basketball season. I just can't wait. When's
their first game? Chits Uh, Well, they play a week.
They played this week.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
They played Friday UH in ann Arbor in an exhibition
against the University of Michigan, and then UH the following
week they play Arkansas in Fayetteville and then the I
believe the first game is November fourth, lot that the
(37:14):
headphones are out again.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
This is not going to work. This is not gonna
hear me.
Speaker 21 (37:20):
Can you hear me?
Speaker 3 (37:21):
I'm losing my mind, Sean. It's not my day.
Speaker 21 (37:24):
Can you hear me?
Speaker 3 (37:25):
My day?
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Mike, Hang on a second, let's take a break. We'll
be back right after that. Since he three sixty right
here on Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati. All right, let's
get back to it. I'm sorry, I've got Sean's headphones.
Sean is now running the show blind. He can't hear
anything in there. I can hear you, okay, just in
(37:50):
one year. Okay, back to Mike in La Mike, sorry
about that.
Speaker 22 (37:54):
That's fine, So it happens, right.
Speaker 21 (37:56):
Oh. I did want to mention to talk to Tony
quite a two time on the list.
Speaker 13 (38:01):
We can you know, he's hanging in there.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
But I talked to him Saturday as well, and we
texted this morning. It's uh, it's been a battle.
Speaker 21 (38:15):
Yeah. When you lose your income quickly like that, it's
at least if you get laid off, typically you have
some kind of notice, you know.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
Can you hear me, I got you.
Speaker 21 (38:28):
Okay, Hey, I was gonna say to you, did you
watch any of the NFL games? Well, first of all the.
Speaker 11 (38:34):
Time, I don't see anybody beating Ohio State except I
mean nobody except maybe Miami. What do you think about
Miami or Florida or do you know anything about it?
Speaker 2 (38:44):
I think Miami is really good, really good up front,
and and if you're going to handle Ohio State, you
better be good along both lines of scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
They've got a.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Pretty dominant offensive line and their deep ansive line is disruptive,
and that if you're going to knock off a team,
Ohio States just loaded the other team though, Mike, keep
an eye on Texas Tech. Keep an eye on Texas Tech.
And then I mean, we got to pay a little
bit of attention at least Indiana right now, uh after
(39:18):
they smacked Oregon. So but yeah, I think if I
was doing like a tier system, I think Ohio State
would be in a tier all their own. Especially Julian
Saints playing playing really well. They've got an amazing defense
and and their weapons are are top notch.
Speaker 3 (39:39):
Again, so I'd have Ohio State ahead of the pack.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
And then I'd probably have Miami, Texas Tech and Indiana
and that next group right behind them.
Speaker 21 (39:49):
Well, Miami's a lot or Indiana is way better than
they were last year.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
What I've seen of them, I think, so they're tough.
Speaker 21 (39:57):
And where did that come from? He come to me?
Speaker 22 (40:00):
He wouldn't know who.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
This guy is, Kurt Signetti. He was at Liberty google him.
Oh good, Yeah, as Kurt Signetti would say. That's what
he said at his press his opening press conference, Mike uh.
Somebody asked him, like if he was good enough to
coach in the Big Ten.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
He said, google me.
Speaker 21 (40:18):
I love it. He's got a very matter of fact
demeanor about hims wher. He looks like an accountant. Think
you just take a glance at.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
It kind of does.
Speaker 21 (40:27):
He does the other thing I wanted to mention, I
know you got to go. I I didn't pay attention
to the Bengals yesterday that that's the team's history issue,
but I did this. Baker Mayfields blow in my mind.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
He is v.
Speaker 21 (40:44):
MDP. With the injuries they got there, Oh my god.
Half the offensive line has been gone all year. All
the receivers keep getting knocked down, their top running backs gone.
He seems to be. Just talk about putting a team
on your back. That's what he's doing. But see these
two young receivers. They got this Johnson kid from Morgan.
(41:04):
They just keep pulling receivers out of there, you know what.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Yeah, they and Baker has it rolling. I mean, he
just he's playing a winning brand of football. He's tough,
he's fun. But you know, it is what it is.
It's uh, he's he's I would say right now, he's
probably the MVP.
Speaker 21 (41:26):
Yeah at this point. Yeah, I don't care.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
That's a long way to go, long way to go.
Speaker 21 (41:29):
Yeah, But I'll tell you what Herbert yesterday was. He
was he flashy? Was he? Joe Namath? Joe want No?
But yeah, that guy is. He's not as big as Roethlisberger,
but he's close and he blows. He pushes lineman off
of him with one hand. I've seen him switch hands
and throw a seed to uh to one of those receivers.
(41:51):
He's remarkable in that little lad mcconkee. He reminds me
of Wes Welker or Julian Edelman. The only ways about
a buck eight he goes, he goes across the middle.
He's out of Texas I believe Yeah, wasn't he help
little guy? They don't really have any other receivers anyway.
That's that nobody else cares about that.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
So all right, thanks Mike, I'll talk to you man.
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Bob wants to talk about the Bengals play calling. Do
we have to Bob?
Speaker 23 (42:19):
Yeah, I'm a I'm a simple I'm a simple man.
I'm not that smart, but so someone might have to
explain this to me. In the second half, when we
scored that touchdown to bring us to within eleven, and
we decided to go for two instead of the extra point,
which would have brought us to within a touchdown and
(42:40):
a field goal of time, if we don't make that
two point conversion, then we have to get.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
Two touchdowns, correct.
Speaker 23 (42:47):
I don't understand what was our offense like, Were we
that confident in that offense that so we're just going
to go for two point conversions from there on out?
I don't understand that. You don't make it, then you
pretty much kill your chances.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
Bob. There, well, you can the next time you get
a touchdown, you can go for two and then get
the field goal and it's still a two, but you
can still get a touchdown and a field goal. This is, Bob,
this is a math thing. I I went to public
school in northern Kentucky, so I don't understand it, which
(43:21):
means I'm probably on your side of it where I
don't necessarily agree with it. But there's something in that book,
the two point Like to Go or Not to Go book,
that says, in that situation, to go for two.
Speaker 23 (43:38):
That's assuming you have an offense that you can trust
will make it one out of every two times.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
I agree, Bob, But that's the that's the math there.
Speaker 3 (43:47):
Yet that's no, I'm not quite there.
Speaker 23 (43:49):
That's common core math.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
If you ask me.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
The math says two point conversions are a fifty deal.
So you go for two and then if you don't
get it, you're okay because you can still go for
two the next time. But ultimately I'm kind of with
you on that one. I kind of hate it there
because I hate for me old school me. I turned
forty eight this week, Bob, so I'm getting old. I
(44:17):
hate chasing points because far too often in my life
I've seen a team you start chasing points and then
you look up and later in the game that point
that you didn't get or that you tossed away means something.
So it is all about the book, the two point
conversion book, to go or not to go? That situation
(44:38):
calls for go. I've never necessarily agreed with it, especially
what they didn't score in nineteen consecutive drive. They didn't
score a touchdown in nineteen consecutive drives up until last week.
I'm not putting a lot of faith into this offense
right now. But they did, and they got it.
Speaker 23 (44:53):
I'd love to hear Zach explain why. Maybe they saw
something on the defense, maybe someone was injured that they
knew they could take advantage of.
Speaker 21 (45:01):
Well they didn't.
Speaker 3 (45:02):
You know, I genuinely they made it.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
I genuinely believe job. It's as simple as the book
says to go for it. So they go for it.
Speaker 23 (45:12):
But I guess the book also says to hand the
ball off and run right into the gut of the
line on first down when you have no running game.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
Also, over and over and over again.
Speaker 24 (45:22):
It is.
Speaker 21 (45:23):
It's great anyway.
Speaker 23 (45:24):
Like I said, I'm I'm a simple man, and they
I guess, thank you for explained. I missed reading that book,
so I'll go look back.
Speaker 3 (45:30):
It wasn't in the curriculum where you went to school, Bob.
Speaker 18 (45:34):
It was not.
Speaker 23 (45:35):
Hey, it's been a tough week. I urge everyone out
there to hang in there. And uh and who knows,
maybe since he three sixty does make a full three
sixty turnaround and comes back from this.
Speaker 21 (45:48):
But it's been a tough week.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
Really has no question, Bob, I am going to I
love doing this show, but I am not going to
be sad that I don't have to do it tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (46:00):
Appreciate it, have a great week.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
Thanks.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
There you go, our number one in the books, our
number two. We'll talk some bear cats. We'll get to
talkbacks a lot to get to there. And I think
Zach does talk here? Does does he talk during this show?
Speaker 21 (46:16):
Do you know?
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Or do we have to wait for Most Show to
hear from Zach. That's a great question. I'm not sure.
I don't I'm not here every day for it. I
think it might be Most show, though.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
I know Wednesday from his Moe's show, for sure. I
know he talks today, especially with the short week, I
just will keep our eyes out. If he talks, we'll
let you hear it. How about that we're today, we're
so on top of it today, Sean. The first literally
the first thing when I woke up this morning was
(46:49):
the news that Jim Kelly had passed right, and my
brain just isn't it's not there like the focus and
the the energy you need to do to do this
show has been a great challenge today, a great challenge.
Let's take a break. Hour number two coming up after this.
This is Sincy three sixty, a service of Skyline Chilleycky Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (48:06):
All right, here we go, Hour number two, Monday Midday
Quarterback on Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty, discussing the Cincinnati Bengals
twenty seven to eighteen victory over or loss. Excuse me,
the twenty seven to eighteen loss to the Green Bay
Packers last night. Some of the numbers, Joe Flacco twenty
(48:28):
nine of forty five, forty five. Joe Flacco comes in,
has like three days to get ready. Chase Brown had
nine rushing attempts. Samajp rnd six Jamar Chase won. They
ran the ball fifteen times, they threw it forty five. Now,
(48:52):
to be fair, some of that was playing from behind
and having to play catchup. Some of that was because they,
I think at one point the second quarter, had run
eleven plays right before halftime. They were on pace before that.
I think it was just before they tried to get
(49:13):
in field goal range, ran two short plays inbounds, wasted
two of their three timeouts, and as a result, had
Evan McPherson try to attempt a sixty seven yard field goal,
the longest or sixty eight yard field goal would have
been the longest field goal in NFL history. He made
the first attempt, but green Bay called a timeout, and
(49:36):
then he was short on the second. But before that,
I believe the Bengals had run eleven plays in the
first half, so then by the time the second half
rolled around, you weren't really in a position to run
the ball. But the point stands. Sixteen rush attempts, forty
five pass attempts. Joe Placo had been in the building
for four days. They held Jordan Love mostly in check
(50:05):
nineteen for twenty six. He had two hundred and fifty
nine yards, a touchdown and a pick. Josh Jacobs did
some damage eighteen carries ninety three yards, didn't break a
big one, but just consistently six seven eight every time
they gave him a touch And that was kind of
(50:27):
the problem. There were very few third and lungs, very
very few third and lungs. The Packers were either getting
first downs on first and second down, or they were
(50:49):
they were tasked with third and short and able to
work around that. So that part clearly frustrate if you're
a Bengals fan. But there are some silver linings. There
are some things here that you can look at and say, okay,
(51:12):
going into Pittsburgh, and maybe this is just product of circumstance,
given how bad the Minnesota game was, the Denver game was,
the first three quarters of the Broncos game, like, there's
things to look at and say, Hopefully they're building up
(51:33):
a little momentum. Hopefully they are putting themselves in a
position to utilize this four game stretch that can help
them get off the mat. Because if not, if this
thing's at two and six, three and seven, this it's
(51:56):
a lost season. It's a lost season. It's got to
my guy, mister a, mister Ace, what's going on?
Speaker 18 (52:05):
Brother man?
Speaker 14 (52:08):
You know what, mister chad Man, It's good that Cincinnati
got us a win, even though we lost on the scoreboard,
even though we lost in the game, we got a
win by getting a better quarterback because I think that, unfortunately,
what we shot from Jake Browning this year is what
(52:29):
we would have seen if Jake Browning started the first
time Burrow got injured and he had to step in
for Joe during the season. Good what they were good
when Browning played, but that was after he had the
momentum of the season already going and Joe was there
to take the pressure at the beginning of the season.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
To react to that.
Speaker 14 (52:57):
Hey, I'm not sure, man, I personally think Briana would
have froze up and played like he's played these games
if he started off. I think it was twenty twenty
three Joe had the was it the app in decta
me season or the foot injury season.
Speaker 3 (53:16):
It was one of those years I think it was.
Speaker 14 (53:22):
Yeah, yeah, Yeah, it's sad, but I mean our quarterbacks
had so many danging injuries. I mean, I think he's
like last Joe from Mike Tyson's plush out. But I mean, well,
we'll hope that he has more of the eye of
the tiger, like Piston Hurricane. If you can catch the
Mike Tyson flesh out reference, yeah, I mean you can
(53:44):
dodge and move around and get us back to the promises.
Speaker 2 (53:48):
That no sacks or one sack yesterday, no interceptions. If
you tell me that's what I'm gonna get from Joe
Flacco from here going forward, I'll feel pretty good. He
got the ball out quick. He talked about it. If
you heard the interview earlier. Uh, being able to throw
balls that he didn't throw necessarily what he didn't throw
(54:09):
a good ball and Jamar and t were still going
able to make go able to make a play. Now
he would have He would have been even more successful
if Andre Joseavash didn't have a hole in the middle
of his hands dropping a couple passes one that would
have converted a big third down and could have made
things even more interesting. I mean, look, I get the
(54:34):
hindsight on Jake Browning, but the reality is, especially once
Joe Burrow gets paid, the backup is not going to
be good.
Speaker 3 (54:44):
He's not like you've got so much.
Speaker 2 (54:48):
Money in your starting quarterback that unless you just go
hit on like a fifth round pick that ends up
being an outstanding backup that that maybe develops and can
come in and win you some games. Uh, if Joe
is out for for any period of time, you can't
build a roster that also has money invested in the
(55:12):
backup quarterback.
Speaker 3 (55:13):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (55:15):
It's it's it's just not with a salary cap and
as much as Joe is getting, it's just not feasible.
It doesn't make financial sense because not that it matters
when some of the way this team builds a roster.
I guess I guess you could make an argument that
you should spend a bunch of money on backup quarterback
because if Joe's out as it currently stands, you're in big,
(55:38):
big Dodo.
Speaker 3 (55:39):
Mister Ace.
Speaker 14 (55:42):
Well, I mean, I think the Bengals will probably be
dipping back into the celebrity backup quarterback market next year.
I'm very sure that Russell Wilson will be very available.
Speaker 3 (55:51):
Yeah, yeah, is a good he does.
Speaker 14 (55:57):
There's something that we would love to see our quarter dude,
just I may snap who doesn't want to just go
out there? John Madden retro ball, techno ball. I'm throwing
the bomb pass on almost every player offense. Try and
light it up and be like, I'm trying to get
eight thousand yards passing in the season type stuff.
Speaker 3 (56:18):
I feel you. I feel you for sure. Hi, misters,
I gotta keep it moving. You got anything else?
Speaker 18 (56:26):
Snap Man?
Speaker 14 (56:26):
I think I'm happy that you see continues to win.
I'm not saying I want to cheer against their coach,
but also due to the fact that we had a
major loss here at the radio station because of the
artist known as Tony Pipe no longer being here, I
think that just freeze him up to one I started
(56:47):
the campaign. I think it was earlier this year. Last year,
Hi and Tony pipe for the next UC football coach.
If this coach keeps off winning, he could possibly get
a job that he doesn't deserve again and get him
out of Cincinnati. Could he got his team to a
ball game and somebody thinks that he can actually coach?
Speaker 21 (57:06):
I don't know.
Speaker 14 (57:07):
I'm still not buying buying into Scott Sanderfield period. Anyway,
shake from a fashion. I went him from Rock paper scissors.
Speaker 2 (57:16):
You you've got to adjust with the times, mister Acey.
He's winning, we can't. We can't want him out because
he can't win, and then when he wins, we want
him out because he's winning.
Speaker 18 (57:27):
Come on, man, I want him to win and I
want him to move on and then hire to baby.
Speaker 3 (57:40):
Appreciate you, man, We'll talk soon.
Speaker 19 (57:42):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (57:44):
Take from Dayton. How you doing, Dick?
Speaker 17 (57:46):
Hey, Kad, good talking to you.
Speaker 21 (57:48):
Hey.
Speaker 27 (57:49):
I watched I was out a little bit with Church,
but I was kind of impressed that drive he had
in that one handed test. You know, I thought I
didn't you know, he wouldn't adjust, but it was I
thought those drives were good. What do you think chick.
Speaker 3 (58:05):
The second half drives are definitely good.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
The second half drives are what you expect when you
bring in a Joe Flacco like, Look, Joe Flacco can't
move right. He's not a guy. You have to protect him.
You have to run your offense quick. Guys have to
get off the line of scrimmage and make plays. And
in that second half, that's what we saw. They executed
it well. Guys got off the line of scrimmage. Flacco
(58:28):
delivered the ball accurately and quickly to guys that made plays.
And that's who they're gonna have to be if Joe
fla For as long as Joe Flacco is the starting quarterback.
Speaker 27 (58:40):
I'm just concerned. You know, I think Thursday, the Bengals
play at home. But the Bengals defense has to come
up with a good plan because you know, Eric Rodgers
in that rubin and that Pittsburgh would just look was
chilling cleave when yesterday and you know they you know,
but I'm thinking, what do you think if I think
the defense is gonna have to protect the Bengals, you know,
(59:04):
to get you think Rogers will pick them apart. But
I'm thinking that the Bengals defense has to come up
with a good, good answer, don't you think.
Speaker 2 (59:12):
I mean, they've got it kind of be similar to
what they were in the first half yesterday. They gave
up some yards, but they weren't letting teams, you know,
get deep in the red zone and put points on
the board.
Speaker 3 (59:25):
You know, that's who they have to be. They're gonna
give up yards.
Speaker 2 (59:29):
This is not This is not a team that can
play pressman coverage and pressure and be attacking because they
don't have the talent.
Speaker 3 (59:37):
To do that.
Speaker 2 (59:39):
Yeah, but if they tackle better, the biggest thing is
they need to tackle better. If they tackle better, they
can make things a little bit more frustrating for opposing
offenses and they can get off the field a little
bit more, and you know, you hope.
Speaker 3 (59:54):
I don't think the Steelers have a great, great offense.
Speaker 2 (59:56):
I think they're gonna be in the twenty one twenty
four point range that game on Thursday night. So the
big thing is Trey Hendrickson. Well, we see Trey Hendrickson.
It's a back issue with a turnaround from Sunday to Thursday.
I don't feel great about that. If they don't have Hendrickson,
it's it's gonna be an uphill climb.
Speaker 27 (01:00:16):
Yeah, well listen, nice to talk to you, chat.
Speaker 3 (01:00:18):
Appreciate it. Dick, you have a good week. Okay, buddy, Okay,
bye bye bye bye. All right, we're gonna take a break.
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
Talkbacks, getch talkbacks, talkbacks, gets talkbacks, talkbacks. After this Sincy
three sixty a service of Sincia shirts.
Speaker 3 (01:00:35):
Now your chance to win at ballox.
Speaker 28 (01:00:37):
Press the microphone, hand record your message for ustain and tone,
please keep it clean and don't be mean. And a
sprinkle sprinkled drip drip. It's that time for talkbacks. It's
our favorite part of Sancy three sixties. Austin, Buddy, play
(01:00:58):
that talkback on your Please try not too Saba Taja.
Speaker 3 (01:01:05):
Austin is uh.
Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
I don't know if he's I assume he's traveling back
at some time today.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
I'll be here tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
If he's gonna sabotage talkbacks, it'll be tomorrow today. It's
Sean McMahon and I and we're not gonna do that.
Have you listened to these in advance?
Speaker 3 (01:01:22):
Sean? I probably should have.
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
Oh boy, here we go. Ready, I guess i'd have
the dump button ready. I've always got it ready.
Speaker 3 (01:01:34):
Hey, Chad.
Speaker 19 (01:01:35):
Hey, I'm from Savannah. Hey man, you need to stop
making sense. You're gonna get kicked off the radio. Keep
up to good to work, dude.
Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
I'll try, I'll try to stop. I'll make less sense
of the rest of the show.
Speaker 29 (01:01:52):
Hey, Sean, Hey Chad, it's Jeff and New Richmond. Really
sad day today to hear about the passing of Jim
Kelly Junior. Never had a chance to meet him, but
always enjoyed his calls on the radio. And no matter
how much or how little you knew about the game,
Jim always kept you informed. He will be missed. So
(01:02:15):
that being said, hopefully the Bearcats can pull one out
this upcoming weekend. You guys have a good day.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
Thank you, Jeff, appreciate it.
Speaker 14 (01:02:25):
This station sick run back party, TI, what are.
Speaker 21 (01:02:30):
We doing.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
Well?
Speaker 30 (01:02:33):
Thanks for your input. Hey there, Bearcat Nation. Dan here
from Redding via Clifton. Jim Kelly will always be mister
Kelly to me, growing up at his house with his
oldest son, nicest, most knowledgeable college football mind I've ever
talked to. As a musician, he played my proposal to
my wife. He played our wedding at our anniversaries, birthday parties,
(01:02:55):
So we're going to miss that. I will miss him
at our tenth anniversary party. I love you, mister Kelly.
Speaker 19 (01:03:01):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
Good stuff.
Speaker 17 (01:03:05):
SpongeBob literally just learned about Tony Pike and uh, well
he's really off.
Speaker 31 (01:03:14):
You know what I'm saying, Like, what the.
Speaker 3 (01:03:19):
That's the first he censored himself. I appreciate it. Hey,
Jeff from Casey here.
Speaker 32 (01:03:27):
I do have a little bit of optimism after watching
Flacco on that yesterday in the second half. I mean,
that's all we need him to do. If he can
do that, hopefully we can win some games and make
it interesting since it's so wide open. Secondly, that first
call you took today, We'll listening to you react to
it was one of the funniest things I've heard in
a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
It was that was that was that was something.
Speaker 24 (01:03:55):
Yeah, steal catch to I rep in the city out
here in sunny at my g rest in peace, Jim
Kelly Junior, real talk. I'm gonna miss the dude on
the radio. Now, the Bearcats has Ring twenty four. Do
y'all see Nebraskt behind us replay that game again? I
bet it will smoke him this time. Were ready, we seasoned,
and we ready straight to the top. Texas Tech is
(01:04:17):
a team to beat. Bengals. Man Flacco, Yo, you proved,
you proved me right. Now we can win Thursday. Let's
get this division back.
Speaker 3 (01:04:27):
I don't disagree.
Speaker 10 (01:04:31):
It's the paintball guru here.
Speaker 33 (01:04:33):
And as a UC alumna, I wanted to say condolences
go out to the Kelly family and to the UC family.
I never met mister Kelly, but I've enjoyed listening to
him for years and it is a loss for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:04:57):
Agreed, Jim Jon was awesome.
Speaker 20 (01:05:01):
Chad.
Speaker 34 (01:05:01):
I want to give you my condolences on the passing
of Jim Kelly.
Speaker 21 (01:05:04):
I'm sorry to hear that.
Speaker 34 (01:05:04):
He sounds like he was a great man as far
as the Bengals go.
Speaker 21 (01:05:08):
I agree.
Speaker 34 (01:05:09):
You are one of the few guys, especially in radio,
that has common sense when it comes to these teams,
but the Cincinnati teams. But as far I don't understand. Uh,
you know, certain some fans have an optimism when it
comes to this team. After losing four games in a
row and another two score loss, I mean, I just
don't get it. If we're optimistic after that, My, oh my,
(01:05:29):
how far are we falling.
Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
I don't think it's it's optimism as much as please Lord,
don't let it be as bad as I think it
is from three weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (01:05:42):
Right like, boy, I the.
Speaker 2 (01:05:47):
One, the one thing that that will lend you some optimism.
The past three weeks, Uh, the Steelers are two and zero.
The Browns, Bengals and Ravens have not won a game.
I don't necessarily believe that the Steelers are that good.
I believe the Steelers will once again end up in
(01:06:08):
that nine to ten win range that they always seem
to land at. So I get that there's a sense
of like, hey, Joe Flacco at least gives us a
shot that Jake Browning did not. Unfortunately, the defense still stinks.
There are still problems, massive problems along the offensive line,
(01:06:30):
although they were able to mitigate that sum yesterday, but
it's still not a good roster. The chances that they
get this thing on track and keep the team respectable
until the possibility of Burrow comes back. I think everybody
(01:06:51):
knows that that's unrealistic, But as a fan, you want
to at least cling to a little hope, right like
you want to give yourself a reason to watch on Sundays.
I was at my cousin's house yesterday. It was a
birthday party for my uh for for her two little ones,
(01:07:12):
and the consensus was like, just Sunday Fundays is based
around the Bengals for four months out of the year, Like,
this is what we do on Sundays, and if they stink,
Sundays are not as fun. So I think people do
hold to that optimism that hey, like we want to
(01:07:34):
still be able to enjoy Sundays in November and December,
and if they stink, if they continue to bottom out, boy,
it's not a lot of fun. It's a lot of
people in this this market that rely on that as
a release and when they stink, nobody nobody wants your
release to be watching terrible football.
Speaker 34 (01:07:58):
And the optimism, I get it, depending on what lens
you're looking at it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:03):
Sure, if you're looking at it through.
Speaker 34 (01:08:04):
The lens of yeah, we're just playing out the string
at this point, definitely not gonna make the playoffs, but
just want to see some positive growth, you know, going
to the next year.
Speaker 3 (01:08:13):
Uh yeah, I get it.
Speaker 34 (01:08:15):
But if you're optimistic thinking that there's gonna be some
kind of playoff run or something like that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:19):
You're just I mean, sorry, but you're lost.
Speaker 21 (01:08:23):
Chad.
Speaker 34 (01:08:23):
I know you don't think that way, but there would
be surprised how many people in this city do.
Speaker 19 (01:08:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
Like I said, people are gonna be optimistic until they're
not until it until there is truthfully no chance. I mean,
I don't know how you have much optimism after the
past couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:08:41):
But Flacco at least.
Speaker 2 (01:08:44):
Changes the narrative a little bit enough for people to
look at it and say, hey, maybe maybe.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
Yeah, no, but maybe he seems to have that effect
everywhere he goes. He does.
Speaker 29 (01:09:02):
Hey, Chad, Jeff, and you Richard Again. I wanted to
ask a couple of things about the Bearcats. First of all,
they're five and one, twenty fourth in the country, and
I still don't trust Scott Sanderfield. Is there something wrong
with me? I just I don't trust him? So and
(01:09:23):
then my other question was about Luke Fickle. They got
me thirty four to nothing on Saturday. How much time
does he have left?
Speaker 2 (01:09:33):
The Scott Saderfield thing, it's a you problem, and I
get it, like they haven't done enough to fully earn
the trust. And I've thought about this a lot in
terms of people's people's take on Satderfield the there is
this very unrealistic expectation that because we're in the transfer portal,
(01:09:58):
because we're in the nil era, that it's easy to
just turn the roster around in one year, and it's not.
And then it's easy to jump from the American Athletic
Conference to the Big twelve Conference and compete in one year,
and it's not. And it's easy to replace your legendary
(01:10:18):
head coach and most of your roster while doing both
of those things, and it's not.
Speaker 3 (01:10:26):
Here's what I would.
Speaker 2 (01:10:27):
Say, if things were as bad as fans think that
they were, this program wouldn't have Gavin Gerhart and Brendan
Sorosby and Joe Royer and Jake Goldey and Dante Corleone,
(01:10:47):
because they all would have left at the end of
last year if the cultures stunk, if the program was
on bad footing. Players can sense that those guys all
had opportunit needs to make a lot more money elsewhere,
a lot more money elsewhere, and they stayed. They believe
(01:11:12):
in the program. And if guys like that, guys with
legitimate NFL aspirations are taking less money and staying with
Cincinnati because they believe in Scott Saderfield and they believe
in what is being built. Shouldn't that be enough for
you to do the same, especially when you're looking at
(01:11:33):
a team that's sitting at five and one undefeated in
the conference. Maybe that's maybe that's just me.
Speaker 3 (01:11:44):
You want to say, Russell Wilson throws a good deep ball.
Speaker 29 (01:11:48):
Stop feeling.
Speaker 3 (01:11:53):
Rude.
Speaker 35 (01:11:59):
A thank Chad Calvin and Newport. I agree exactly with
what you were saying. If you can tell me that
Joe Flacco is only gonna get sacked one time and
there's gonna be no interceptions and no fumbles, I'll take
my chances in any game any week. That's exactly what
we need to be seeing out of our offense. I
think our defense has been overperforming the expectation.
Speaker 3 (01:12:21):
They've kept us in these.
Speaker 35 (01:12:23):
Games every week, and we need to see more out
of the offense. I personally want to see more out
of the running game.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
Yeah, I think we all want to see more out
of the running game. But this is kind of the
bugaboo when the focus has been gotta protect Joe Burrow,
got to protect Joe Burrow, got to protect Joe Burrow.
So they have gone out and got a bunch of
offensive linemen that it is widely considered that their specialty
(01:12:55):
is pass blocking. They very clearly are not good at
run blocking because there have been very, very few openings.
I did like a couple of the runs I saw
from samaj p Ran yesterday, Sean, Yeah, he he runs
the ball hard man. Chase Brown does too. For whatever reason,
(01:13:17):
it felt like p Ryin had a little bit more
pop yesterday when they gave him the ball. Six carries
sixteen yards. Not a large sample size, but it didn't
feel like there was a lot of getting hit at
and before the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (01:13:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:13:32):
Yeah, I don't know if that's if that's chalked up
too experience, or maybe there's something else going on that
we don't know about. You know, we never fully know
the what's going on behind the scenes of players. But yeah, yes,
some mom JP Ryan definitely looked better than Chase Brown yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
Yeah, let's keep.
Speaker 21 (01:13:48):
It going, Chad.
Speaker 19 (01:13:51):
It's Chris and Alexander.
Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
Chris to give you some support and encouragement here.
Speaker 14 (01:13:56):
Man, you have been put in a really difficult situation
the last few.
Speaker 12 (01:14:00):
Days, and you're really overcoming it.
Speaker 19 (01:14:04):
You're being yourself.
Speaker 10 (01:14:05):
Keep up the good work, buddy.
Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
Appreciate that, man, that that means a lot. These radio
is usually really easy and really fun. These last three shows,
the the joy has been a challenge and that sucks
because I do this because it's fun and it's what
I wanted to do since I was a kid. And Uh,
(01:14:29):
sports talk radio is not supposed to be sad and serious.
Unfortunately circumstances mean every now and again it's going to be.
Speaker 12 (01:14:38):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
I appreciate that you have enjoyed it, and I have
done my best to battle through.
Speaker 3 (01:14:44):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:14:48):
And there's another drop by andre Yosavish.
Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
I mean we keep hearing about the receiver work that
he's been doing, and then the off seat he's in
this and and improvement that you got to stop dropping
balls and hit you right in the hands, brother, right
in the hands for a key third down, Like as
you're trying to make a comeback and you drop a
(01:15:16):
ball right off your hands for a first down. That
that's that's not how you earn the trust of the
people making the decisions.
Speaker 32 (01:15:31):
Heya, David Independence, do you think Burrow would even want
to come back this year?
Speaker 3 (01:15:37):
If the Bengals were able to bounce back a little.
Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
If he's a hundred jose ah competitor. I know as
a fan, it's very easy to say I'm not doing that.
Joe's a competitor. If he's one hundred percent and the
Bengals are in position to battle or contend for a
playoff spot, at absolutely think he would come back.
Speaker 3 (01:16:02):
If they're out of it. It would be.
Speaker 2 (01:16:04):
Malpractice to bring a guy coming back off of that injury.
Speaker 3 (01:16:09):
It just doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
But yeah, I think if I think if the Bengals
are in striking distance and and Joe can come back,
I absolutely think he would. The guy is a competitor
and this is his job. Hey Audi, Wait, no.
Speaker 36 (01:16:29):
It's still awkward saying just hey Audi. Wrong, guys, I
got two takes from the weekend. Okay, the Indiana Hoosiers
are for real in Ohio state, better watch out, and
Joe Flacco is the answer?
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
What was the question? Right? I heard? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:16:48):
What was the question? If Joe Flagger's the answer? What
was the question. If the question was can the wing
Bengals be a Super Bowl contender? The answer is no.
If the the question was does this make the Bengals
more competitive than if Jake Browning was playing QB.
Speaker 37 (01:17:07):
The answer is yes, Hey Jim and Milford. I Hey Jim,
right row, Hey Jim and Milford. I got to run
in some numbers in my head the Bengals to get
to ten and seven and kind of secure a playoff spot,
(01:17:30):
which is funny in itself. They have to go eight
and four the rest of a way, don't think.
Speaker 3 (01:17:36):
So agreed that's all we got.
Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
I mean agreed. That would be a lot to ask
for this group to get to ten wins with what
they have remaining, especially you've got this four game stretch
coming up, and then after that it's brutal for a month.
Although Baltimore has not been good, especially without Lamar, what
(01:18:04):
does that situation look like when is Lamar potentially going
to come back. It's the chances that this is a
contender four weeks from now, five weeks from now are
pretty slim. But on that front, at least Sean, at
(01:18:27):
least I knew what I was watching with Jake Browning. Yeah,
it was a team get its teeth kicked in. With
Joe Flacco. Maybe they get their teeth kicked in, But
I'm not going into Sundays almost certain of it. I
was almost certain that they were going to get their
teeth kicked in with Jake Browning your quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
So and you got to wonder, you know what if
this team had an average offensive line or an average defense,
you know, how much better would you feel about the
team knowing that your defense can help keep you in it?
But right now you don't really have that confidence. I
mean in the O line. I mean, yeah, Sunday they
had a pretty good game, only allowing one sack, But
(01:19:10):
this year that seems like more of an anomaly than anything.
If it continues to be a trend, that's great, But
so far through this, you know, this far in the season,
it doesn't look good for those guys on the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (01:19:21):
The defense.
Speaker 4 (01:19:23):
Yeah, I mean, I hope nobody's calling for Al Golden's
job right now because that would be ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (01:19:28):
But you know there's a few slight people out there
who would.
Speaker 21 (01:19:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:19:33):
I mean, they got to they got a draft better,
They got to get guys in the offseason, they got
to get better personnel.
Speaker 3 (01:19:40):
Period. Point the.
Speaker 4 (01:19:42):
Thinks period, Yeah, they they just need more talent and
they don't have enough of it. And you know, they
they've relied too heavily on the development side of things.
You know, how many times have you heard Miles Murphy's
name called?
Speaker 3 (01:19:57):
Not many?
Speaker 6 (01:19:58):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:19:58):
I mean, do some of these guys maybe have some upside?
Speaker 2 (01:20:02):
Sure?
Speaker 3 (01:20:02):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:20:04):
Jordan Battle seems like he's kind of faded off, Cam
Taylor Britt lost his confidence.
Speaker 3 (01:20:08):
I think David Falter talked about that last night.
Speaker 2 (01:20:11):
We haven't even gotten to Logan Wilson getting benched. Yeah,
that too.
Speaker 4 (01:20:15):
Yeah, that's that's the thing that that's something that's been
quietly kind of pushed to the back burner.
Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
It's the guy they gave money to, right extended, right,
believed in. Not only can they not get draft picks right,
they can't get the win to let a guy go
decision right. There's a lot to dislike about the load.
There's a lot of holes in the team. We could
go on and on and on about this. I have
been a big proponent. I don't ever see this thing
(01:20:40):
really getting to where it's gonna be. If Duke Tobin
is running that scouting department, if Duke Tobin is making
the decisions, because I don't think he's good at it.
Speaker 3 (01:20:49):
I think he has.
Speaker 2 (01:20:50):
Proven time over time that he's not very good at it.
But it's deeper than just that. I mean, you need
a bigger scouting department in general, Duke says he doesn't.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
I think that's part of why the Brown family is
fine right with Duke being at the HELM, Because if
you bring in a GM and a new director of
player personnel, they're going to say we need twenty scouts yep,
And the Brown family is going to say, well, Duke,
did it was six four?
Speaker 3 (01:21:24):
How'd that do for you? Right? How'd that do for you?
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
They need a lot of help. Yeah, good job on
the talkbacks. Let's take a break more after this. This
is Sincy thirty sixty right here in ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:21:41):
Must qualify for enrollments results. Me Barry is Football.
Speaker 7 (01:21:45):
In the Natty, brought to you by Postman Law on
ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:21:57):
All right, here we go right up our number two
and Football in the Natty, And it's a Monday midday quarterback,
and we're going to get to the Bearcats a little
bit more an hour three. But something as I was
watching that game yesterday, Sean stood out to me, and
(01:22:23):
when it comes to winning and losing, the fine line
at the highest levels between winning and losing. Right now,
the Bengals are killing themselves in the things that you
(01:22:43):
have to do to overcome not having the most talented roster.
You know, there are years, there are times when everything's
going to click. Your draft picks all develop at the
right pace, You add a couple of free agents that
really hit, your coaching staff is in a good place,
and everything kind of moves smoothly. The operation is a
(01:23:07):
well oiled machine. There are times like where the Bengals
are at right now. There's injuries, there's lack of development,
There's a lot of things that make the wheels wobble.
The problem with this Bengals team for me right now,
and why I don't have a lot of optimism is
(01:23:30):
because of some of the fundamental things that we talked about,
like tackling seven misstackles yesterday, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:23:41):
Three for Carter, three for night.
Speaker 2 (01:23:43):
You're putting two rookies out there on the field they
miss it combined six tackles.
Speaker 3 (01:23:49):
You can't have that shot.
Speaker 4 (01:23:50):
That's that's a fundamental issue that needs to be addressed,
you know, not tomorrow, but immediately.
Speaker 3 (01:23:57):
That's that's football basics.
Speaker 21 (01:23:59):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:23:59):
I want to go to something else that drove me
absolutely nuts yesterday. There's a million things, but go ahead.
Bengals scored three times in the second half. Right yep,
touchdown to start the third quarter, twenty two blaze, seventy
(01:24:20):
two yards, ten minutes, fourteen seconds of possession. On the
ensuing kickoff, they give up a thirty five yard return.
Green Bay starts at their thirty four yard line. Get
a field goal. Kickoff, thirty six yard return. Green Bay
(01:24:47):
starts at their thirty eight yard line. Get a touchdown
to Jamar Chase, fighting, scrapping, clawing, need a start, need
to stop, need to stop, desperately thirty six yard return.
Green Bay starts at the thirty eight yard line three
(01:25:09):
times in the second half. When the defense desperately needed
a stop, the special teams put them in a position
where the Green Bay started at the thirty four, the
thirty eight, and the thirty eight. You want to know
a big part of why Cincinnati is really good again
(01:25:30):
this year, and a big part of why they were good.
I know it's easy to look at Dez and Sauce
and Kobe Bryant and Mike Warren and Josh Wiley and
Alec Piers, like the names could go on and on
and on.
Speaker 19 (01:25:44):
Ye.
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
One of the reasons that they were great is because
special teams. The expectation was for special teams to be
great every week.
Speaker 3 (01:25:54):
Yeah, every week. Luke Fickel was a big special teams guy.
Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
Brian Mason's the best space teams coach in football.
Speaker 3 (01:26:02):
I completely agree with that.
Speaker 6 (01:26:03):
He was.
Speaker 3 (01:26:04):
He was very, very good.
Speaker 4 (01:26:05):
They placed such emphasis on special teams at every single practice,
every single week. I mean, I can still hear Brian
Mason every practice, see the ball kicked, see the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:26:17):
You know right?
Speaker 4 (01:26:18):
That still rings in my head every time I hear
Brian Mason's name. So yeah, I mean, yeah, that was
that was a major emphasis. It really was the third
phase of the game for them. It was so important.
A lot of times it was the second or first phase.
Speaker 3 (01:26:34):
Of the game.
Speaker 2 (01:26:34):
Yeah, Like there there were games that Cincinnati got wins
in very large part because the special teams was outstanding.
Speaker 3 (01:26:45):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:26:46):
And even more so when you're in the situation that
the Bengals are in. Now, Yeah, that's not a great
roster if you're going to overcome a shaky roster. You
can't have things like bad tackling. You can't have things
like letting the opponent start almost at midfield after three
(01:27:08):
scores in the second half, when you're desperately trying to
come back, and you know you have a defense that's shaky,
that has played their butts off, that has put you
in a position where you're still in the game after
running eleven plays in the first twenty five minutes of
the game on your offense, because your offense was that bad.
(01:27:31):
They gained one yard in the first quarter. The defense
fought tooth and nail to keep them in that game,
and then you start to get the offense rolling and
special teams allows Green Bay to get into position to
drive short fields, to extend the lead, and to keep
Cincinnati at arms length.
Speaker 3 (01:27:52):
Yep, that's Zach Taylor.
Speaker 2 (01:27:55):
That's on Zach Taylor and the culture and the understanding
that it seems like this football team doesn't have.
Speaker 4 (01:28:04):
Yeah, well, I think another thing, Chad, And you know,
a lot of Bengals fans out there might say it
took you this long, but before I'm always hesitant to
jump on coaches for a lot of things because I
think people tend to blame coaches for things that aren't
necessarily their fault. But going back to the Broncos game
a couple of weeks ago, the pre snap penalties, Yeah,
(01:28:26):
that happened consecutively. To me, that's discipline on coaching, and
that starts at the coaching level. That was like the
first game where I legitimately looked directly at Zach Taylor
and thought, Okay, that is on him, nobody else if
you ask me that, because he wasn't. He also doesn't
seem very angry about it. He panted the sideline. He's
(01:28:49):
just got that same blank look on his face, and
you're like, why are you not like pissed at your
team right now?
Speaker 21 (01:28:53):
Man?
Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
You know it is a must if you are going
to win with lesser talent, if you are if you
are not going to have elite talent, and you can
still win, you can still be good. You have to
be fundamentally sound.
Speaker 3 (01:29:08):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:29:09):
And we are watching a team that, week after week
after week, plays poor fundamental football over and over and
over again.
Speaker 3 (01:29:18):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:29:20):
All right, let's take a break. Zach did speak a
little earlier. We'll listen to that at the top of

Speaker 2 (01:30:28):
We'll get into a little bit more Bearcats in this
hour and their twenty to eleven win over Central Florida
on Saturday. But a little bit more Bengals here, as
Zach Taylor spoke this afternoon, and let's hear from him.
Speaker 38 (01:30:46):
Sorry, we'll see what you know early in the week Monday,
we'll have to give it kind of day today listing
here and see what There are a lot of guys
that are sore to.
Speaker 19 (01:30:57):
Us up to hey by here.
Speaker 21 (01:30:59):
Thanks.
Speaker 39 (01:31:00):
He'll be out for this game for sure. Get more
information now, just got to pick it's it's gonna be
a while. We'll just see what that means. Marius should
be good to go. Sam SAMs progressing back, so we'll
get a chance. So we don't do a lot of
full speed to work this week, but I'm optimistic.
Speaker 31 (01:31:21):
And then you got Lucas in some practice last week.
Speaker 39 (01:31:23):
Yeah, he's a good We'll just continue to make a
decisions on that. But from a physical standpoint, he's so good.
Speaker 9 (01:31:31):
Protocol yes, viously gets then quickly there.
Speaker 10 (01:31:37):
What's kind of your idea of the approach to take.
Speaker 6 (01:31:39):
As that group?
Speaker 39 (01:31:41):
Tanner, you still got three other ones, you know, three
that that played for us. So Kam mc granny has
been up and down over the course of the season
last season, so still have three guys there.
Speaker 10 (01:31:51):
I look back on it.
Speaker 29 (01:31:52):
How'd you feel about the operation with Flacco quarterback?
Speaker 21 (01:31:54):
First game?
Speaker 39 (01:31:55):
I thought he's settled in, uh, you know, especially being
on the road and just having to hear from me
in the huddle. It's hard to hear sometimes with the
nonverbal stuff, with the kind of scrimmage. I thought he
operated really well, you know. I mean, it's uh surprising
how quickly he was able to do that, But give
us a lot of confidence and seeing how he did
it so we get a chance to carry it over
to home and use the verbal cadence and all that
(01:32:16):
kind of stuff. But really really pleased with how he
operated and gave us a chance.
Speaker 10 (01:32:24):
This is gonna happen without Trey. I mean, how how
differently did you feel?
Speaker 21 (01:32:27):
Like?
Speaker 10 (01:32:27):
Are there ways to scheme around not having him out there?
Speaker 39 (01:32:30):
I mean we're, yeah, trying our best to to find
ways to manufacture pressure, pressure and get after the quarterback.
And I know I was, you know, trying to do
everything you can to make sure we can affect there
the team's quarterback.
Speaker 6 (01:32:43):
Make in the game.
Speaker 19 (01:32:46):
You put judge at the scene.
Speaker 39 (01:32:49):
Yeah, it's again, I think he's gonna get better that
every rep he gets, and you know, heating Demeterest out there,
play with a lot of energy loganers out there, and
and so again it's a room that's going to continue
to improve and they're just going to need the experience.
Like we've got a lot of rookies out there playing
right now, you know, and they're gonna get better with
every single game that they have and all the experience
thing together, and I think it's worthwhile for them to
(01:33:11):
gain that experience.
Speaker 9 (01:33:13):
Did you feel like it was a risk going into
that game to put him out there in that capacity
with two rookies in that environment, or whereas you could
have had maybe Logan play a little bit more.
Speaker 14 (01:33:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 19 (01:33:25):
I trusted him, you know.
Speaker 39 (01:33:26):
That's that's why we made the decision, because he's shown
operationally he can handle it. I think anytime you put
a rookie out there, there's there's an element of risks
to it, and just when are you gonna expose yourself
with that risk?
Speaker 19 (01:33:37):
Are you going to do it sooner other than later?
Speaker 39 (01:33:38):
And I just felt he's shown enough to just continue
to work through it. We're going to see constant improvement
every single game and and so again a lot of
confidence in him and we'll continue that move forward.
Speaker 32 (01:33:50):
At Charlie, have you an else kind of be in
a conscious decision that you're gonna you're you're willing to
play young guys maybe even more.
Speaker 39 (01:34:01):
Yeah, I mean that's both sizeable. You know, our two
starting guards have been rookies. So again, we're not going
to hesitate to play guys that we think have a
lot of potential for us. And there's going to be
some growing pains there. But all the guys that we
have are are They're intelligent guys. It's important to them,
they're mature, and so we're gonna get them out there,
(01:34:21):
and they've earned it. It's not like we're just saying, hey,
we're going to play young guys that haven't earned the opportunity.
These guys have earned the opportunity to shown us that
there's a lot of potential there and that they're capable
of doing it and helping us win.
Speaker 19 (01:34:30):
And so that's why we have them out there.
Speaker 10 (01:34:32):
There was in the film, how would you says the tackling.
Speaker 19 (01:34:35):
Not good enough?
Speaker 39 (01:34:35):
You know, too many opportunities there where they got extra
yardage and the first chance we get we got to
get them on the ground, and too many examples of that.
Speaker 40 (01:34:43):
Not haven't us played a million games? But can you
still put into context the challenge that it was for
him to parachute in four days.
Speaker 10 (01:34:53):
Before a game?
Speaker 40 (01:34:54):
Whatever it was and start and play a pretty good
game in an NFL game on the road.
Speaker 21 (01:34:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 39 (01:34:59):
I mean, first of all, probably doesn't know many of
the names of the guys on the team. You know,
there's young players that are out there that he probably
doesn't know what their skill set is or how they work.
And so just trusting the information he's got going out
there and making playees and making some adjustments and signaling
a couple of routes, you know, I can think one
he wasn't quite sure what was going on, so he
(01:35:20):
signaled Jama route and gave Hi an opportunity. And I
just can't say no if it was incredibly impressive to
go in there and do what he did on so
short notice. He didn't get here on Sunday night or
Monday morning. He got here Tuesday after the game plan
was in, you know, and in one o'clock, really our
first seging on planet is in. And so he has
to drive in that night and practice the next day.
(01:35:42):
And he gave his confidence just the way he handled
himself and just carried himself through the week and through practice.
I think he gave gave everybody a lot of confidence
that he was going to be out there and execute
and and he certainly did that for us, and you know,
give us a juice there.
Speaker 40 (01:36:00):
And now unfortunately you don't have too much time here.
You can't really how much more can you put on
us plate before Thursday night?
Speaker 19 (01:36:07):
Can you'd be surprised?
Speaker 12 (01:36:09):
You know?
Speaker 39 (01:36:09):
It's it's we're we're capable of. But now that we
know what he understands and how quickly he hits his
brain and makes sense to him, and now that we've
seen him operate in our offense with our players and
how he takes to that, I think he really enjoys
throwing of these guys. And so again we'll continue to
press the envelope. We don't want to overwhelm them. We
don't want to get to point of diminishing your turns.
(01:36:29):
Were now we got too much and we're forgetting what
this means and that means. But I think he's shown
that he's capable of of taking on a little bit more.
Speaker 10 (01:36:35):
You go through it.
Speaker 19 (01:36:36):
For he's played this for whether anybody, and he's been
the same a coach.
Speaker 10 (01:36:42):
Does that matter familiar?
Speaker 39 (01:36:44):
I think it matters, Yeah, absolutely, he knows their style
of play, he knows their level of aggression on defense,
and and playing against most of their guys over there.
Speaker 19 (01:36:53):
He was an indie last year playing against him.
Speaker 39 (01:36:55):
So yeah, he's been in clear So of course he's,
like you said, play as much as anybody has. I mean,
obviously he's probably played him more than anybody has in
this league it's currently playing. So I think he's got
a great sense of what it takes to.
Speaker 3 (01:37:08):
One going every year.
Speaker 10 (01:37:10):
You guys have a short week going into a Thursday
night game.
Speaker 3 (01:37:12):
But the fact that it's a divisional opponent, new quarterback.
Speaker 10 (01:37:15):
What different challenges does the short week provide for you guys?
Speaker 19 (01:37:18):
Well, the same is them. You know it's there on
short week as well.
Speaker 39 (01:37:22):
Uh, they're just coming off a divisional game, so it's
there's no different challenges for us.
Speaker 19 (01:37:27):
For them.
Speaker 39 (01:37:29):
Again, our guys just got to get in the get
in the training room, get their.
Speaker 19 (01:37:32):
Bodies back right.
Speaker 39 (01:37:33):
Most of it's above the neck work, and we're out
there working over the next couple of days just understanding
what we're trying to get done in the game plan.
Speaker 19 (01:37:39):
But again, it's it is what it is. It's the
same for both teams.
Speaker 5 (01:37:43):
Mike Tomlin spoke today about being surprised that the Browns
would trade Joe Flacco to you, he said, He said,
you know, it doesn't make sense to me to trade
a quarterback that you think enough of to make your
opening day start, or to a division opponent that's hurting
in that area. We're you surprised that a team in
division was willing to help you, So I was happy.
Speaker 19 (01:38:06):
That's that's my only comment.
Speaker 15 (01:38:09):
Where's the balance of saying it's a big game, division
game obviously, but one of seventeen versus where you are
in the standing, where they are in the standings, and
putting a little at it.
Speaker 10 (01:38:19):
This is on this game.
Speaker 39 (01:38:21):
I think there's a lot of emphasis on this game.
This is we're coming off the stretch we've come off of.
We want to win, we're hungry for it. Our guys
have worked for it. We got to do a better
job from start to finish getting that done. But there's
a lot here. You got a home divisional game. The
division is where it is right now. You know where
the bees it stands, the top two teams at the top,
(01:38:42):
and you get a chance to knock them down a
peg and put yourself up one. So I guys understand
what's a stake, and it's it's big for us, and
we'll treat it to such. And you guys got to
get to work and you got to have a great
performance by everybody.
Speaker 3 (01:38:56):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (01:38:57):
There's Zach Taylor from earlier today as they gets set
to host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. Quick turnaround.
These Thursday night games are weird. Cincinnati does have some questions,
especially on the injury front, and mainly with Trey Hendrickson.
(01:39:17):
You could see in the first half a much different
defense with Trey Hendrickson on the field than in the
second half when Green Bay was able to move the
ball pretty freely without that threat of Hendrickson off the edge.
The biggest thing, though, is you know there is a
(01:39:43):
chance in this division because I don't think and maybe
I'll be wrong on this, and maybe this is the
year that Pittsburgh takes advantage and is resurgent and finds
their way to remain atop the AFC. But if you look,
(01:40:04):
they get the Bengals, and then the Packers, and then
the Colts are playing well, and then the Chargers, who
are playing well, then the Bengals again, then they get
the Bears, but Bills, Ravens, Lions Ravens like those are
all the teams that are still left on Pittsburgh schedule.
I do not think this is a Pittsburgh team that
(01:40:24):
is going to run away and hide at twelve wins,
let's say that. So that does mean there's an opportunity
for the Bengals to play themselves back into contention in
the division. If you beat Pittsburgh this week, the Bengals
(01:40:47):
sit at three and four, the Steelers are four and
two with a difficult couple games coming up, and the
Bengals going into the Bears and the Jets. That's opportunity
presenting itself for Cincinnati here. Do I feel confident about it, No,
(01:41:11):
of course not. But if you if you win this
game Thursday, and you've got the Bears and the Jets
and they've got the Packers and the Colts, all of
a sudden, you're both sitting at four and four, or wait, Pittsburgh,
(01:41:31):
Pittsburgh will be four and four. The Bengals that have
an extra game, they'd be five and four because they
haven't had to buy yet. So so that's where the
optimism comes from. It's a lot of what if it's
a it's a lot of taking for granted, things that
(01:41:55):
are far from a sure thing. It's far from a
sure thing. I don't care how bad the Bears and
the Jets are. This is not a great Bengals roster.
They can lose to anybody on any given Sunday. But hypothetically,
we're to playing the hypothetical game. And you pick off
the Steelers on Thursday night, then you've got a chance
(01:42:18):
to play yourself back into it over the next couple
of weeks. Conversely, if they don't get the job done
and they lose to the Steelers and now the Bengals
are sitting at two and five and the Steelers are
sitting at five and one, the Bengals aren't gonna get
(01:42:39):
back up for a wildcard spot.
Speaker 3 (01:42:41):
That's just.
Speaker 2 (01:42:43):
Too unlikely. Too many teams to climb back over Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs, Colts, Jaguars,
Bill's Patriots. The Bengals are gonna put themselves in a
position to win the wildcard without Joe Burrow. And you
can't beat the Steelers at home on Thursday night football.
(01:43:07):
I think we all know the reality of that. That's
why I think yesterday I wasn't overly concerned in terms
of how the team looked. I was overly concerned how
they looked against the Vikings, the Broncos, and the Lions,
because they looked like crap. They looked terrible, terrible, terrible
(01:43:36):
on offense, slightly less terrible on defense, but still not
good enough, not even.
Speaker 3 (01:43:43):
Remotely close to good enough.
Speaker 2 (01:43:44):
When I watched that game yesterday, that was a team
that was competitive on the road against the Green Bay Packers,
with Joe Flacco just getting to the building on Wednesday,
four days to prepare. So essentially it comes down to this,
(01:44:07):
It comes down to Thursday. So I don't think there's
a lot to talk about from the Green Bay game.
There's really just not they were going to lose that game.
I was as confident as pretty much anything you could
have confidence in that they weren't going to lose that game.
(01:44:27):
The question was were they going to put up some fight?
Were they going to make this difficult for the Packers?
And they did, and would they show that would Joe
Flacco at the helm The offense at least looked relatively competent.
Speaker 4 (01:44:46):
If I can add on to that, shed yeah, wasn't
at least a little bit refreshing, albeit in a loss.
It was a little bit refreshing to see Jamar Chase
do Jamar Chase. But that's Joe Flacco, right, That's yeah,
that's that's on him too.
Speaker 3 (01:45:02):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (01:45:02):
Joe Flacco has played a ton of football. Joe Flacco
has never had a Jamar Chase. Joe Flacco understood the
assignment that Jake Browning did not understand. Get it to
your best guys, get it to Jamar Chase and let
Jamar do the things that I mean that touchdown catch,
the last touchdown was absurd. That inane, It was absurd.
(01:45:25):
That's the byproduct of having the best player in the
game at his position. He's going to make some of
those plays. Joe Flacco still has a phenomenal arm Yep,
some of the other physical traits have gone a little
bit by the wayside. And look, Green Bay did a
(01:45:46):
good job creating pressure, but Flacco got the ball out.
Speaker 3 (01:45:51):
He just looked collected in the pocket. That's who he is.
He's just been there and done that.
Speaker 21 (01:45:55):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:45:56):
That's why we've asked for all these years if Joe
Flacco was a leader or not. Yep, Yeah, that goes
back aways.
Speaker 2 (01:46:02):
Let's go to David Reading before we get out of
here for this segment, Dave.
Speaker 3 (01:46:05):
What's that?
Speaker 21 (01:46:06):
Man?
Speaker 22 (01:46:07):
Hey, Chad, I'm with you all the way on the
chasing points thing. I got some breaking news for you.
Callahan just got fired.
Speaker 3 (01:46:16):
Wow.
Speaker 22 (01:46:18):
But what I want to talk about is Jim Kelly's mind,
and I hope you'll give me some time. I don't
know how much time here, just.
Speaker 3 (01:46:25):
Cock here, but we got a couple of minutes. You're okay, okay?
Speaker 22 (01:46:28):
Uh. He's he's a queen's a good friend of my family's.
I've known about the cancer, unfortunate for by more than most.
My sister Peg is Sarah's uh what do you call?
Athletic trainer? And my my brother Ken uh, who's Tony
Pike's head coach in high school? Son Son's played with
(01:46:53):
Bryan uh uh, Jim's son for a lot of years.
But I'm want to tell you my personal thing with Jim.
I worked at a place called steel Craft in Red
Air and Blue Ash Steel Plant, and back in seventy nine,
I was there a few months. My partner was a
guy named Larry Peterson. He goes, he knew who that
(01:47:14):
is over there, and I go, no, I'll know who
that is there that's Jim Kelly. I said, no, it's hot.
He said, Jim Kelly. So you see Jim Kelly said yeah,
I said, you're said. Now, there's a boyhood friend of mine.
I've known him since as a kid. He's I guess,
I said, what's he doing here? He got by the
bears and all? He said, no, I guess it between
jobs right now. So I got to know Jim and
(01:47:35):
he was just the greatest guy in the worl aged
joke and he he and I know people have talked
about him being a musician, talented musician, but he also
refereed games, he coached. He just maintain. I said, Jim,
you're one talent dude. Man, he just moss bylaw.
Speaker 3 (01:47:53):
He's one of those.
Speaker 2 (01:47:54):
He's one of those guys that was talented at everything.
Speaker 22 (01:47:59):
But the story I want to pay what. I knew
him for a month or so. Here's how great of
a guy was. I'm sure you were as a lad
back then, but uh, I was at the Hoo tragedy
in seventy nine.
Speaker 3 (01:48:10):
I was too, So I was just a lad back then, right.
Speaker 21 (01:48:14):
I was.
Speaker 22 (01:48:14):
Actually I was actually right in the middle of the
fray and a lots of story for another time. But
uh uh and so I what you know back that's
back for the cell phones and everything, so you know
what's going on. So next day I go into work
and Jim's pacing the foreward back and forth. I knew
this man maybe about a month or so. And I
walked in. He oh, Dave, y'all right, y'all right, and yeah,
(01:48:36):
you're twenty four years old. We think you're invisible. You
don't think about what you just went through. He was
just so worried about me. You only knew me from
like a month or so. And he just greatest dude.
And uh, I was lucky my my son Brandon played
on the twenty ten Reading high school team, which they
stayed foul fort they aren't him last year. During the
(01:48:58):
game and they all met down of wines and reading
at the game and uh, see, I coach a lot
of them kids. I'll see you tell these guys later
down there to go down there. And he said, hey,
there's a somebody walking around here named Jim Kelly. Uh
you see my name, you know, Heiner on my shirt.
He said, are you related to Ken and days? Yeah, uh,
(01:49:19):
my dad's day. He's gonna be down here soon. So
it was great. It was uh, and that'tually I knew
about him. He seemed pretty well and seeing you know,
a piece everything, and uh gave him a hug and
talked to him for a while, and I was just
so grateful, Uh Bill see that day. And I'm just
so you know, I was joking. Me and my brother
(01:49:40):
Scot always joke about uh Tony Pike and uh, the
guys every interviewed, somebody always so and so you're the best,
You're the best. Everybody can't be the best.
Speaker 3 (01:49:49):
Right, Jim Kelly was the best.
Speaker 22 (01:49:51):
Jim Kelly was the best.
Speaker 3 (01:49:54):
I mean, I love Tony. I love Tony.
Speaker 22 (01:49:56):
Oh yeah yeah, but I'm not putting them down way
that people use.
Speaker 3 (01:50:01):
You're the best, You're the best, right, I love Tony.
But if you're asking me who was the best, Tony
or Jim, I'm taking Jim.
Speaker 24 (01:50:09):
And Shan.
Speaker 22 (01:50:10):
I know, I know, you know Big Mode that used
to work with me. Oh yeah, and Mode knows real
well too. I hope you know. I hope you're Mod's listening.
Not next time he see me, you know about it.
Hopefully he knows about Jim. I'm sure he probably found
out by now. But he was real close to Jim too.
Jim was this kind of guy. He had to get
close to it. He was the greatest man.
Speaker 3 (01:50:30):
Yeah, he was. There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 21 (01:50:32):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:50:32):
I am internally, I'm eternally sorry for your loss. And
it sucks. It's been a crappy, crappy day.
Speaker 22 (01:50:41):
It's truly roughy and he's seventy.
Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
One by he probably seventy one, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 22 (01:50:46):
But just the greatest guy in the world. I just
had to get on here, and I'm going to keep
my composure as much as I could.
Speaker 3 (01:50:52):
I did not earlier today.
Speaker 22 (01:50:54):
I consider him a good friend. I just see him
time to time anymore.
Speaker 14 (01:50:58):
Now.
Speaker 22 (01:50:58):
But he's I mean, he's so modest. He did so much.
I mean, people don't realize he got said about a
bear who had bad knees or reason he didn't play
pro football. But he was just a great player. It's
just I think people say it all the time. He's
a good player, every even better human being.
Speaker 2 (01:51:17):
Sometimes sometimes they were better players. He was amazing, all right, man.
I appreciate the call, thank you, and I appreciated Dave,
and we'll be thinking of you and your family on
the loss of gym as well.
Speaker 22 (01:51:30):
Thank you, manpciate buddy.
Speaker 2 (01:51:32):
All right, let's take a break if you want to
get Bengals in. I got one more phone call to
get to from Scott, if you want to get some
more Bengals in before I move on to the Bearcats
for the last half hour, last ten to fifteen minutes,
and then Moe live from Twin Peaks for the what
should still be the Tony and Mo Football Show. I
think that's what I'm gonna call it today. More after
(01:51:54):
this Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 26 (01:51:57):
Now your chance to win at Bow three sixty is
back on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (01:52:09):
I'm doing a great job on the music today, by
the way, Sean, I do my best. The start of
this thing was a little rough, but I think we've
rebounded pretty well.
Speaker 3 (01:52:18):
Yeah, we're turning it around. We got back on track.
We turned it around.
Speaker 2 (01:52:23):
I won't feel as bad turning it over to Mow
as I would have felt a couple hours ago.
Speaker 3 (01:52:32):
Make deal with what you have exactly. Let's go to
Scott and Dayton. Scott, what's up, my brother.
Speaker 12 (01:52:38):
How are you doing?
Speaker 3 (01:52:39):
Have a tough day. We've had better days, Scott. But yeah,
we're doing all right.
Speaker 12 (01:52:43):
I can understand that. Hey, I'm not sure that the
discipline factor that you quoted about the Bengals being undisciplined
is quite the stat.
Speaker 3 (01:52:54):
That you want to use. Okay, Well, you think they've
been disciplined.
Speaker 12 (01:53:00):
There are fourth fewest penalties in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:53:02):
There's more to it than penalties, very very Look, if
you look at the numbers, I usually the most disciplined
team is pretty good and the least disciplined team is
pretty bad. If you're using penalties as the only metric
for discipline, well I'm.
Speaker 12 (01:53:20):
Using that because that's where they've been under Zach Taylor.
Speaker 2 (01:53:26):
Okay, but my point is, you have a team that's
not super talented. I don't think we I don't think
there's any reason to put this team in the top
half of the NFL in terms of most talented rosters. Right,
you have some stars, but there's there's there's not a
lot on defense after you get past Trey Hendrickson's name.
Speaker 12 (01:53:47):
Right, Well, they did pretty well against a really, really
good team yesterday. But I see your point. I understand
what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (01:53:57):
I'm what I'm saying is if that that's going to
be the case, you can win that way. But if
you win that way, you have to be better at things.
And somebody corrected me and said that there was fourteen
miss tackles yes, I think it was seven from the linebackers.
Speaker 3 (01:54:12):
Fourteen miss tackles yesterday. You have that opportunity.
Speaker 2 (01:54:17):
They have that opportunity in the second half where they're
scoring right and then you're allowing the Packers to start
just inside their own forty. Like that is the little
stuff that can keep a team that is playing from
a talent deficiency keep them from winning games. That's kind
(01:54:39):
of what I was getting at, Like, if you look
at it, it's just using UC as an example. Right,
the past couple of years, special teams were bad. There
were a lot of kind of head scratching turnovers. They
were doing things to prevent themselves from getting across the
finish line in close games, in games that are tested.
(01:55:01):
They cleaned up the special teams. They've cleaned up the
turnovers and the penalties to an extent. They're still probably
penalized a little too much, especially offensive line related for
my liking, But because they have cleaned up some of
that stuff, they have allowed themselves to be in a
better position to win without Joe Burrow especially. You can't
(01:55:24):
let Green Bay start at the thirty six to thirty
eight and the thirty eight on those three second half drives,
is what I'm getting.
Speaker 3 (01:55:32):
I do agree with that.
Speaker 12 (01:55:35):
I think you're also under selling them just a little bit.
Speaker 21 (01:55:39):
I mean of this schedule is the back half of the.
Speaker 12 (01:55:44):
Schedule they have at least six quasi winnable games.
Speaker 2 (01:55:52):
I said that, and I said it starts in this
stretch right here. That's why I wasn't overly concerned about
the Packers game because Steelers, Jets bear Steelers. That's going
to give you an indication of whether this is a
team where that can compete or not. Now, yes they
do have they do finish with Brown's Cardinals or Dolphins
(01:56:12):
Cardinals Browns, but if you're you know, five and nine
at that point, it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 12 (01:56:22):
Well, again, they that was a pretty big gauntlet of
teams that they just played for.
Speaker 3 (01:56:29):
But they got smoked in three of those games.
Speaker 12 (01:56:32):
Yeah, they did well, it's because they turned the ball
over too much and we're getting terrible quarterback plays.
Speaker 2 (01:56:37):
Yes, the quarterback play is going to get better with Flacco.
You've got to get better on special teams and you've
got to be a better tackling team. And if they
do that, I think Flacco does give them a decent
chance to win some of these games.
Speaker 12 (01:56:51):
I don't know if you saw tomlins comment.
Speaker 2 (01:56:55):
About the Browns trading him, Yeah, Like, why would the
Browns trade him inside the division when they know he
can go help the Bengals. The Bengals were dead in
the water and a divisional foe. Like, I agree with
Mike Tomlin there, I'd be pissed at the Browns.
Speaker 12 (01:57:09):
Yeah, all right, all right, well, I hope tomorrow is
a better day for you.
Speaker 2 (01:57:14):
I appreciate that, Scott, you have a good one. Thanks man,
Thanks for the call. All right, let's take a break.
We'll get to some Bearcats real quick. We're going to
get back since Ninty's ESPN fifteen thirty, moom right along,
since Sninati's ESPN fifteen thirty Chad Brendle in for Austin.
He'll be back tomorrow. I'm sure you guys will be
(01:57:37):
glad to have him back. And really, for the first
time in my life, I'm gonna be glad to not.
Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
Be doing radio tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:57:45):
I need a break, Sean, I need to break man. Man,
it's been a rough it. It's been a rough three shows.
But I'm a team player and I have battled through
as best as humanly possible. Let's get to the Bearcats
twenty eleven winner over the Golden Knights of Middle Florida
Institute of Space and Hospitality.
Speaker 3 (01:58:08):
Don't call him Central Florida. They don't like that.
Speaker 2 (01:58:10):
No, that's I took there. They don't like being called
Central Florida. So I started calling the Middle Florida.
Speaker 3 (01:58:16):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:58:19):
Look that that's that Central Florida team has a solid defense,
and that solid defense gave Cincinnati some trouble. I don't
think Cincinnati expected them to load the box the way
that they did, and and I don't blame them. If
I said this on Saturday night on our postgame show
on Bearcat Journal, if you're a coach and you're watching
(01:58:44):
your next opponent, do what that running game did to
Iowa State the week before, I'm telling my guys, like
that Tywie Walker, those two hits that he put on
Iowa State's defense, the trucks did that would have been
playing in my facility on a loop all week to
(01:59:05):
let those guys know you're gonna let this happen to you,
You're gonna let this guy run over you. And I
thought you see up did a very good job taking
away Cincinnati's running game. That impacted their ability to ever
really find a rhythm to connect the dots in terms
of staying ahead of the sticks. There was a lot
(01:59:27):
of first and ten, second, nine, third and seven, and
when you do that, you're gonna get a lot of
three announce And that part was a little bit frustrating.
But the Cincinnati defense did their job. They held Central
Florida out of the end zone until the final two
minutes of the game. They had a couple plays that
(01:59:48):
could have made this thing thirty four to three, twenty
seven to three that they missed. They've got some things
offensively that they have got to clean up going into
Oklahoma State and then a tough five games stretch to
end the season. But but Cincinnati's five and one, Cincinnati's
(02:00:09):
three to zero in the Big Twelve, and for the
first time since joining the league, they look like a contender.
I get wanting to overanalyze and to say, if this
continues to happen, they're going to struggle continuing they're winning ways,
and I agree with that, but I would also say
(02:00:30):
this from somebody that has been doing this a long time.
Winning at this level is really bleeping hard, and when
you're doing it, take some time and enjoy it because
it's not a sure thing. And yeah, Brendan Sorosby didn't
have his best game on Saturday, and he's gonna have
(02:00:53):
to play better, if not against Oklahoma State, definitely against
Baylor and against you Utah and against BYU and against
TCU and against Arizona. Like he's gonna have to prove
it over those final weeks where last year he went
ice cold down the stretch and Cincinnati lost five in
a row. He's gonna have to prove it. But it's
(02:01:19):
a lot more fun to be dissecting a win than
it is to be dissecting a loss.
Speaker 4 (02:01:25):
Sean, Yeah, I think the nice thing about this team, Chad,
is that this year, obviously they're far from perfect, they're
far from elite, but compared to the previous two years,
they feel a lot more complete in every aspect of
the game. You know, I heard Tony and Dan Horror
talking off the air about how much more complete they
(02:01:48):
look on special teams and that was something you and
I were just talking about in the fickle era. Well
right now, on special teams, U see looks a lot
better this year than they did last year. And I
think that was also a huge key to Saturday's win
because that helps set up your defense for success, and
if your defense can play well well, subsequently it helps
your offense. It's just a revolving door of everybody helping everybody.
(02:02:11):
So yeah, this time around, it feels like a much
different team than in previous years. It's good to come
off of a win. Yeah, it wasn't pretty. It's not
always going to be. You know, games don't get played
on paper. They get played on the field, something I've
heard a million times. You know, you can look and
you can say, yeah, well you see it doesn't have
a great quarterback or whatever. You can say this about them,
(02:02:32):
but it doesn't matter come game time. It's about execution
and you see got it done on Saturday. That's all
that matters. Yeah, they have some flaws, like at cornerback.
They're still struggling at the corner position. They don't have
a lot of depth there. And yeah, the run game
got shut down. But again, I think that's more of
a credit to UCFS defense stepping up and playing really well,
because I thought they did a great job of shutting
(02:02:55):
down the run lanes for uc and forcing them to
pass the ball and just forcing him to be kind
of a one dimensional offense.
Speaker 3 (02:03:02):
But obviously it wasn't enough.
Speaker 4 (02:03:04):
And yeah, you got to give credit to them, because
that UCF team, well, I think they're three and three,
you know, they're they're still a good football team.
Speaker 3 (02:03:12):
You got to put Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:03:15):
That they're good per se well, in part because I
think they're they don't have enough pop on offense right
to be good. But they're dangerous and they've done this
to a lot of teams where they just kind of
drag you down into the mud. Uh And they and
they hope that they can hit a couple of plays
and and and make things interesting. Cincinnati kept them from
(02:03:36):
doing that. They didn't have really any big explosive runs,
which is kind of the backbone of their offense. I
know people got kind of upset watching their quarterback run around.
Speaker 3 (02:03:47):
He got popped a lot though, by the way, that's
another thing to talk about. Rocked him at the start
of the second you.
Speaker 4 (02:03:53):
See quarterback, and Tony and Dan talked about that on
the broadcast of just how exhausted he looked. I think
Tony made the comment about, you know, he's never seen
a quarterback that tired, oh in a long time. And
I think that's a huge credit to UC's defense getting home.
And yeah, they didn't they didn't tackle him all the time.
I felt like they were missing quite a few tackles themselves. Yeah,
(02:04:15):
but nonetheless they were absolutely having an effect on the
quarterback play for UCF.
Speaker 2 (02:04:21):
Yeah, all right, let's take a break. We'll talk to
MO live from from Twin Peaks right after this. Closing
out this episode of Since He three to sixty on
Sincinnati's ESPN thirteen.
Speaker 26 (02:04:33):
Thirty sixty continues on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.
It's time for Since the three sixty quick Hits.
Speaker 19 (02:04:42):
On ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (02:04:45):
All right, here we go.
Speaker 2 (02:04:46):
Let's let's close this thing out with Mo Egger live
from Twin Peaks and MO Radio is supposed to be fun.
Speaker 3 (02:04:54):
I have I have not had much fun of late.
Speaker 31 (02:05:00):
That makes two of us.
Speaker 17 (02:05:01):
Uh, this has been a tough week was made even
more difficult by the news we found out this morning.
You've talked about him extensively. I am among the many
who are heartbroken to find out about Jim Kelly's passing,
and uh, I uh, we're obviously going to talk extensively
(02:05:22):
about him. For those who don't know, we're at Twin
Peaks in Westchester, the home of the Tony and MO
Football Show. I don't know what we'll be calling the
Tony and Mo Football Show moving forward.
Speaker 31 (02:05:31):
I do know that James Rapeene will be here.
Speaker 17 (02:05:34):
James knew Jim well, and we're going to start by
talking about Jim today.
Speaker 31 (02:05:40):
As one might expect.
Speaker 2 (02:05:42):
Hopefully you hold yourself better than hold yourself together better
than I did in noon, because.
Speaker 22 (02:05:47):
I did not know.
Speaker 31 (02:05:48):
I heard that, yeah, and I didn't this morning.
Speaker 3 (02:05:53):
I cried all morning.
Speaker 31 (02:05:55):
In an age where it.
Speaker 17 (02:05:57):
Is increasingly difficult to find people who are true gentleman,
Jim really stood out for being one. And you know,
I said this to somebody when I stopped by ken
Wood today. There's like a small collection of people in
this business that I've never I've literally never heard anyone
(02:06:18):
say a negative thing about and that's a small group.
Speaker 31 (02:06:22):
Jim Kelly was in that group, and for that word gentleman,
that's what he was.
Speaker 17 (02:06:29):
More than anything else football broadcasting. He was a family man,
but just a true gentleman right down to the very end.
And boy, there just aren't really people like him anymore
at oh so maybe that's to me what makes his
loss even more profound.
Speaker 2 (02:06:48):
For short, Bengals can't get it done. But I didn't
walk away from that game with a lot of bad feelings.
Speaker 14 (02:06:55):
MO.
Speaker 2 (02:06:56):
Maybe that's just in a contrast of the way the
last three games felt. But I walked away from that
one going there's some winnable games here in this four
game stretch coming up.
Speaker 31 (02:07:07):
I viewed yesterday's game as a preseason game.
Speaker 17 (02:07:11):
The offense, learn the offense, get on the same page
with your guys, get some game reps with the dudes
you're going to be thrown to. They were gonna have
to play a perfect game. They were gonna have to
get a Green Bay team that made a bunch of mistakes.
Maybe early on you thought that the first pick that
Gino stonehauled in was going to be the start of that.
I viewed yesterday as just planned some seeds for success
(02:07:34):
later on offensively, and I think they did that.
Speaker 29 (02:07:36):
I know.
Speaker 31 (02:07:37):
It's not moral victory, right, It's not. It's just it's.
Speaker 17 (02:07:40):
Understanding the circumstances the Bengals are in and understanding that
they're trying to make the most of them. And I
do believe they planted the seeds for an offense that
can certainly be more functional than it has been. Now.
I don't think that people, or I believe that people
don't necessarily view the Pittsburgh Steelers as.
Speaker 31 (02:08:01):
The challenge that they should be, if that makes sense.
Speaker 21 (02:08:04):
But yeah, I.
Speaker 17 (02:08:07):
Walked away from yesterday's game feeling like that was a
successful preseason effort for Joe Flacco in the Bengals offense.
Speaker 2 (02:08:13):
Here's the one thing that I really felt like was
going to be the case going in, and it played out,
and it is what eases my mind a little bit.
Joe Flacco was going to understand the assignment and that
assignments get the ball to Jamar Chase.
Speaker 17 (02:08:27):
You know, it's more difficult, I guess than he made
it look. But that was my big thing about Joe
Flacco last week. Sure he's immobile. Sure, maybe the marriage
of an immobile quarterback and an offensive line that's not
very good isn't the most ideal. But when he goes
back to throw, if Jamar Chase is open, will he
throw him the football? And the answer for Jake Browning
(02:08:48):
was no. The answer for Joe Flacco was yes. I
thought Jamar Chase played a great game yesterday, but his
quarterback gave him a chance and that wasn't happening before.
By the way, I know quickly to switch gears on you. Okay,
I know UC football is back. You know how I
know UC football is back. How's that when you have
to remind people to enjoy winning.
Speaker 3 (02:09:10):
Yeah, winning, That's that's what I know.
Speaker 31 (02:09:14):
Because you know, when I think of the twenty twenty
one season, I think I'm the only person who enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it because I had a blast. And what
I because all I heard that style points, they're not
winning by enough.
Speaker 17 (02:09:26):
It's a it's a win on the scoreboard, but it
doesn't feel like one. And I'm like, pile, I don't
know what alternate reality you exist in. This is a
lot of fun. So look, man, that that game on
Saturday was weird. But when we're having to remind people
that it's okay to be happy about the fact that
they won. That's when I know the Bearcats are back.
Speaker 31 (02:09:45):
Baby.
Speaker 2 (02:09:46):
We It's amazing what a difference being bad at special
teams and being good at special teams can create, like
the the ability to pin teams back inside their own
fifteen regularly and make field goals and good on punt
and kick coverage and maybe get a return here and there. Like,
it's incredible the difference that makes in the outcome of games.
Speaker 17 (02:10:10):
Talked about it with Dan in the postgame show on Saturday.
It was my biggest takeaway. By the way, Max Fletcher
Big twelve Special Teams Player of the Week, how many
times this offseason that I bring that.
Speaker 3 (02:10:19):
Up to you? Almost special teams the special.
Speaker 17 (02:10:22):
Teams play had to be better, and it was atrocious
last season. It was just and look, that's that's not
to pile on Carrie Collins, who was a beloved figure
in this town, but his special teams units last year
were atrocious. They could not win games in the margins,
and so to me, it's the main reason why they
won the game, and frankly, the main reason why the
(02:10:42):
game was never really in doubt. That's it's to me
that the sign of a well coached team is good
special teams right right to me, Like the sign of
a well coached football team is one where every special
teams unit is effective and can be weaponized.
Speaker 31 (02:10:58):
And I think that's the case.
Speaker 2 (02:11:00):
We've already moved from uh are they gonna fire Scott Sadderfield?
To is somebody gonna hire Scott Satderfield away?
Speaker 31 (02:11:07):
Can I give you? Can I give you quickly?
Speaker 3 (02:11:08):
My favorite moment from Saturday, yes ten seconds.
Speaker 17 (02:11:11):
When the opening coin toss was taking place and the
referee referred to Central Florida.
Speaker 3 (02:11:17):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (02:11:18):
Mitt Chef's kiss, Middle Florida Institute of Hospitality. That's gonna
do it. Mouth's up next. Since I'ZSB at fifteen thirty
U c k Y.
Speaker 25 (02:11:26):
Cincinnati, make us the number one preset on your car
radio and on the free Knew It Improved, iHeartRadio ad
Free never sounded so good.
Speaker 26 (02:11:34):
ESPN fifteen thirty Man Trouble and
