Speaker 1 (00:00):
Three sixty is back on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
All right, welcome back since He three sixty ESPN fifteen
to thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. A service depends station at
today and Wednesday and Thursday right down here at the
Kenery Health Practice Fields, covering Bengals training camp each day
noon to three, and then I'll have my normal check
ins all throughout the afternoon. Our first guest since during
our live training Camp report show, and make no mistake
(00:39):
about it, a calculated guest at that for two reasons. One,
since He three sixty and its original stages was James
Rapine before you, you know, went.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Off to here we go.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
You know that mistake by the lake, and you left
and then you came back and you started doing fifteen
different things at once. You saw this show from the
very beginning.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Hold on, I'm juggling in typing.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
I'm gonna say I'm still doing it.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
There we go.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
But you you saw this show at the beginning. It's
now uh an opportunity to broadcast from training camp, which
is awesome in itself. And two, uh, it's your birthday today.
It is my birthday, Happy birthday.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
How cool is this I I'm the same age you
were when you got released by the Panthers, So I
still have plenty of life left. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I thought so too when I got released, and you
really don't. It's pretty much done. O, You're done, it's over.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I got one work out left in me, Jay Gruden,
Let's do this for those thank you for having me.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yes, for those trying to follow along. What's the easiest
way to follow along with all of your camp coverage
for the Bengals.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
I will say that this isn't too shabby for our
camp reports. You got a nice little if it wasn't.
You got Mike Mills keeping you in line, which you need,
so I like that.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Uh, it's really easy.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Bengals Talk dot Com, Cincinnati Bengals Talk on YouTube, and
the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
It sounds way more complicated.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Correct you. Uh? You made it a point when you
first got out here to take a video of Trent Brown,
and I don't know if pictures of him not doing
anything a practice do it justice Trent Brown when he
puts pads on, is he tall enough to play tackle
in the NFL?
Speaker 1 (02:11):
He is? Well, I joked with you, I don't think
he's big enough to be in the league, all right,
So what he makes other Bengals look like it's like
the Simone Biles posing with anyone else that you've seen
during or maybe our training camp when I'm next at you. Yeah,
it's pretty much like that. I mean, he just towers over.
I mean he makes a Marius Mims is kind of
(02:31):
like a normal human.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
It's incredible how big he looks.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
It's huge.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
How much of a battle does this become? One because
he's not been out here, and two because in his absence,
I feel like one of the stories about camp so
far has been the play of a Marius Mims.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
What if I told you that Trent Brown is still
the favorite in the front runner to start at right tackle, Okay,
would not shock me at all if that's the case.
I don't know that for sure. But the depth chart
came out today and Trent Brown is RT one, all right, Okay, Fine,
he's a veteran. They always default to that, and they
don't put rookies in there. Brad Robbins was a backup
(03:06):
last year to Drew Christmin. Sure, all right, so that's
a depth chart thing. Fine, So if you want to
dismiss that, fine two. I just as Zach Taylor, he
said he's totally comfortable with Trent Brown not playing in
the preseason if that's the route it goes. They know
what they're getting. They're taking it slow with him. He's
had a bunch of injuries. We just talked about how
he's a huge, huge man. I think they know what
they're getting and they want to make sure that he's
(03:27):
ready to go on September eighth. That doesn't mean that
a Marius can't win the job, right But I don't
think Amrius has a clear lead right now, just because
he's gotten a lot of valuable snaps and impressed so far.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
You make a mention of injuries the unfortunate news today.
Cam Sample out for the year, a guy that has
played in forty seven of the fifty one possible game
since being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. Look. I talked
about this with Austin last segment. If you go into
the offseason, you say, what are some big needs on
this team. We got to stop the run, gotta get
after the passer. Cam Sample kind of fills both of
(03:57):
those roles, and it opens the door for Miles Murphy
and also for me. You wrote about Joseph Osai going
into camp being one of those camp battles. Does he
make the fifty three man?
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (04:08):
What now do you think shapes up of camp? Sample
being out for the season?
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Ah, man, I mean he's like your Sam Hubbard light. Yeah,
Like everyone likes Sam Hubbard and how he plays the run,
and I think Hubbard's versus or even though they don't
kick him inside, Sample has done that and has been
willing to do that, and so you lose him. He's
been your third most consistent end during this run and
(04:33):
people are like, are you serious? Well, what about He's
done way more than Osian?
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Then absolutely, like way more.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
He's much more proven than a Miles Murphy. And so
now the pressure's on. The pressure's on Joseph o sigh
in a contract year to deliver and be the guy
that he's flashed. We've seen flashes of it. I think
there are a lot of people that believe in him,
So now go show it. And then yeah, the pressure's
on Miles Murphy as well to show that. And I
will say Miles yesterday was really good in the run game.
(04:59):
I know him multiple times, going back and looking at
some of my clips, so hopefully he can get that
pass rush down as well.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
If and I know depth chart number one, it says
Zach Moss, if you're forecasting Game one against New England,
who's your starting running back?
Speaker 1 (05:14):
To me, it's Chase Brown. But I think it's it's
so close that it doesn't mean.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
It's like, no matter what, they're both gonna play similar mind.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Ton, And honestly, that's what's crazy. I'm not sure there's
a room on this team or position group where the
top two outside of quarterback, where the top two guys
are just that much head and shoulders above the rest,
and then includes wide receiver when you have Jamar and
t Because I think the guys behind those guys, whether
it's Charlie Jones, Andre Josavaj, Jermaine, they can all play
(05:42):
Trenton Rwin at running back.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
It's the big two.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
And so I think it'll be fifty five percent of
the snaps versus forty five something like that. And so
if Zach Moss plays the first snap, it doesn't mean
Chase Brown isn't going to get a ton of touches.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
We played the audio earlier of Solomon Wilcott and Dave
Lapham and Solomon has been very adamant that in today's NFL,
especially the way it's going to be next year, Yeah,
you can pay Jamar Chase T Higgins and Joe Burrow.
Sure the outlined. Okay, the Eagles have done it, the
Miami Dolphins have done it. Now you know it. It
is with Noe. There are still holes in this roster
(06:14):
and you need money to fill those holes. And the
argument is always going to be, well, if you have
Joe Burrow, it's the Kansas City method where you can't
pay everyone the top dollar, but Joe Burrow is going
to elevate everyone around you. Is there anything that can
happen this year with young guys on this team or
with some of these rookies that would cause you to say,
you know what, they should go back to t Higgins
and they should find a way to make it work
(06:35):
where they all get paid.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
I mean, you're talking to someone that probably back in
January or whenever we started to look at the offseason
said pay te Then sure I would have paid Tea,
and I would And if you would have done it,
then it feels much different than now. Correct, it feels
much different than now. No, doubt or if you would
have paid him last year. Now you're looking at a
steal of a deal.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yes, correct, steal, whether this money market or receiver market.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
And he'd be in his first year of his deal,
right even if it was a three year extension. And
so that's that's where it gets tough, is now you're
looking at it and if he has the year that
could change your mind, well then what do you do?
You tag him? Yep, And David Mulligata, his agent, won't
want to hear it. T won't hear it or want
to hear it at least, But the Bengals can tag
(07:17):
T Higgins for twenty six million dollars next year if
he goes out there and has thirteen hundred yards, if
he goes out there and looks like Devonte Smith or
AJ Brown or Jalen Watt or Tyreek like that combo,
those tandems that you're mentioning, well, you want to keep him,
and so I would be willing to tag him. And honestly,
from really day one, I thought you could build around
these three guys because you're not paying a Chris Jones,
(07:40):
you don't have a Travis Kelsey that you're paying these
other examples. There's not a lot of big money guys
on this team outside of Joe Burrow right now, and
that's just the reality of where they're operating.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
We just heard from Zach Taylor special Teams heavy practice
today on a practice like that coming out here covering
what are you looking for?
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Well, myes are on Trent Brown today, sure, and in
individual drills, which are obviously going on some right now,
but I'll keep an eye on him just how much
he does all of those things. But from a special
team standpoint, does Brad Robbins punt today? He hasn't been
punting a ton.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Correct current leader in the clubhouse.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
On dISTAR I think by far, and that bothers some people.
Zach Taylor uncommitted, but right now if all three punters
will punt in the preseason, so that backs up my
theory that Austin McNamara and Ryan Raykal battling each other
right now just to potentially get preseason reps and snaps,
and so that's that's interesting. But yeah, I think Robin's
(08:37):
clearly the leader as of now, stronger, bigger, and has
punted well based on all accounts within the building, and
that I've talked.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Is there a scenario Austin has mentioned with the new
kickoff rule multiple times? Here, James, a scenario where you
know pac Band Jones used to go field some punts.
Is there scenarios where you could see a Jamar chase?
Ever go back to field an important case. I mean,
you ultimately want your best players with the ball in
their hand in space. It's a safer kickoff now there's
(09:05):
not as many collisions. Do you think it gets to
a point from a special team standpoint where you can
see a team put a Jamar chase on the back end?
Or even could you see a team grab some linebackers
and safeties on a big kickoff and sub them in
for usually what the what the return team would be?
How how exotic do you think some of this could get?
Speaker 1 (09:24):
I think it will get exotic. I mean, let's let's
use the Dolphins for example. You're telling me and they're
not gonna consider putting wado On Hill back there with
the game on the line.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Correct, You're throwing to them with the game on the line.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
So and what's the most dangerous thing? Get the ball
to Tyrek Hill on a swing pass? Yeah, and let
them let them, have ten yards of separation.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Have the ball in his hands. So yeah, I think
Jamar Chase absolutely, you consider it again, unique situations. It
might be five times a year, right, It's it's not
like you're doing it twice a week. I think Chase
Brown is someone that, even though he's gonna have a
big role on offense, you consider and you know one
and I'm gonna I'm gonna tell Darreon. I've been saying
this for months. Why the hell wouldn't number eighty Andre Joseabash. Yeah,
(10:03):
this freak athlete from Princeton who was drafted as this project,
who ended up being better than they thought, earlier than
they thought.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Why not give him a shot on these kickoffs?
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah? As he looks just yeah, literally ten yards away
from us right now catching passes here in the red zone.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Get out there on kickoffs, Andre.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Can we just get playmakers the ball in space?
Speaker 1 (10:24):
I ran that by him and he was down by
the way. Okay, he said, me and Chase Brown back
there would be nasty.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah. I just think there's so much I think there's
so much potential.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
What about Jermaine Yeah, I mean again, I don't know,
but maybe right, but but.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
You want in the new kickoff, Well, you want the
guys with space last.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Let me ask you that they never said that about
you back in the day.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Maybe no chance between now and Saturday preseason game number one.
Because I mentioned earlier, I think it's it's smart what
Zach Taylor's doing because preseason game number one, why.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Is it the start?
Speaker 2 (10:59):
As well? You're essentially getting the starters versus another team
starters with the Bears in practice. Yep, you get starters
on starters against the Colts. So you're essentially getting three
different molds here of ones verse ones. What do you
want to see from now up until Saturday to get
out of the way before preseason game number one?
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Yeah, it totally makes sense to play the starters this year.
This is the week that I would expect to see
them because of all the reps they'll get in those
controlled sessions. But to me, the main thing I want
is I want to see how these young guys continue
to continue to push, continue to develop. Schedrick Jackson, someone
that we've talked about a ton. Joe Brow continues to
(11:37):
mention him and bring him up. Can he force their
hand and make them keep seven or receivers because six
are locks already. No matter what happens on Saturday, the'
just locks. They're making the team. So that's one the
tight end room I think is interesting. A lot of
what I'll be looking for are these depth things that
aren't necessarily super flashy.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Obviously, we know about the starters.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
We know that Joe's gonna play, and if there is
one thing with Joe, it's does he continue to get
more and more comfortable? Does that spiral continue to look
good like to Kendrick.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
No doubt?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
And and so we've seen some wobbly stuff and then
we've seen the the perfect spirals. And I think he's
still working through that flick of the wrist, and you
want him to continue to improve that and get better
and better.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Who do you think are those those final roster spots?
Where where do you see that at? Right now? Well,
wide receiver.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
This cam sample thing does throw a wrench into it
a little bit, because now do you do you look
and do you keep one of these younger defensive ends?
Does a Jeff Gunter push? Does their their sixth round pick?
I'm forgetting his name, push. I don't have the roster
in front of me. Do they do they go that
route running back wise, I assume they just keep three
tight end wise, I have them keeping five right now,
(12:45):
so that there are a lot of little things like
that that I'll be paying attention.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Back end of the secondary. It feels like you also
have some battles going on there.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
It's it's a good point. It's a good dajon Anthony Man.
He just keeps making plays, finding ways to intercept. He
intercepted Joe Burrow Joe Burrow's only interception of camp, and
then he intercepts Jake Browning yesterday. Keeps making making plays
on the ball. Sounds like he's going to force his
way onto the team.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
A lot of it feels like we're having the same
conversation though, a lot of players forcing their way onto
the team.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Yeah, and that's what you want because I do think
they have depth, but there is a drop off a
player like forty five, sure, like ish where there are
some battles that Well, last year I didn't really feel
that way. I felt like they were deep through like
fifty correct and you kind of knew now like offensive
line wise, does Jackson Carman make it?
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah, Tay Smith, is that.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
The year Jackson doesn't make it.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Is another Jackson ahead of him. Yeah, Kirkland ever heard
of him? I'm not talking about the brand.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
The golf balls.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, I'm sure you were.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
I'm sure that what I actually got you for your birthday,
I just forgot him.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Yeah, I can't hate golf balls. We can go to
the batting cage.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
That that's James Rapine on his birthday. But still down here,
just just hustling.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
I'll run some routes, a few stuff. Have something left
in your own.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
I got a couple of I got a couple left.
And I know this is killing you because this is
like your prime video, mold, this is like your time
right now.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
That's okay, So you know how much video I've taken
a lot outside of Trent Brown, which, of course when
we're done, he's going to be done.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Yes, they got their individual so much.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Yeah, this is this is the amount of time where
James could have actually got some Trent Brown video, but
he's not. But uh yeah, to be here on your birthday,
this is big time stuff.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
I've been here on the majority of my birthdays as
an adult.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
This is no doubt.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I used to I used to hate training camp this
time of the year. Well, it was like playing. You're
in like one, yeah, but two day I was in
a bunch. I was in nine at U see well.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Yeah and you see that didn't count.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
But training camps were real.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
I'm talking about NFL camp.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Well, Wafford College, Spartanburgh not great.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Do you think you were you in two? You were
in two in two?
Speaker 2 (14:46):
God two, yeah, that's my second one. I really became
close with Germany. I will say this on the rehab.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
If I if I would have told like nineteen year
old me that you would have only been in two
NFL training camps, nineteen year old me would have been
really disappointed.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Shattered, shattered.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
I think it's fourteen years later and.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
I'm still disappointed. That is that's James pen James, thank
you for stopping by. Follow along with all your stuff
where Bengals talks tazy right, it's Bengals talk dot Com.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Lango Langles locked on Bengals and Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Bengals start to get older. Things start to happen. Man,
I get it, my hip. What is that? What is that?
James Repene? Uh, real quick, we'll come back, touch and go.
We'll get to Moegor. Since he three sixty on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station
