Speaker 2 (00:23):
Welcome back since he three to sixty.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Let's get our number three underway right here, thanks to
our friends at Penn Station on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station, the home of the Bengals. And speaking of
the Bengals, let's talk a little bit now as we
look forward to Sunday more about the opponent of the
Cincinnati Bengals. It's an opponent that the Bengals do know
very well over the last couple of years. I think
it's one of the best rivalries in all of the
(00:46):
National Football League. Let's talk some Kansas City Chiefs with
the man that covers the Kansas City Chiefs for ESPN.
He is Adam Tyscher. He's joining us right now, Adam,
what's going on?
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Good? How you guys, George today?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Good good, Thank you so much for the time. Let's
start from a Kansas City standpoint health wise. I know
Hollywood Brown is a wide receiver that does possess down
the field capabilities, but his status is a little bit
unknown outside of Hollywood Brown. Is this as healthy as
the Chiefs can be at this moment in the season.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Yeah, it looks like they're gonna have everybody available for
Sunday's game and except Hollywood Brown. So yeah, they're in
good shape. I'll say this, though. They had some guys
who missed the boast of camp or all of camp
because of injuries. Played against Baltimore and they're gonna play Sunday,
but looked a little rusty the other day, So there's
(01:42):
still some guys playing their way into regular season bodes So, yes,
still have everybody available, But will everybody be the players
that the Chiefs know them to be? Not sure about that.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
When you look at the game against Baltimore, one of
the things that stood out to me was just another
edition of Kansas City nailing the picket at wide receivers.
Xavier Worthy, what he was able to bring to the
table against the Baltimore Ravens. Was that at any all
a surprise to you or have you seen that kind
of all training camp? And you know the capabilities now
(02:16):
of what he's able to do.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, you know, you did see it in training camp
and it was sort of an interesting phenomenon. You know,
last year, Rashi Rice was a rookie, but he really
didn't become much of a factor until mid season and
you know, just just a rookie getting used to playing
in the NFL. But the homes you could tell they're
in training camp. He wasn't gonna uh, he didn't want
(02:40):
to wait, so he uh in training camp, he was
getting the ball Xavior Worthy frequently. And there was one
practice where early it was early in camp and they
didn't practice for very long. The Homes wasn't out there much.
Just about every pass he threw that day went to
Xavior Worthy and you could tell he was trying to
speed the process. Uh. So, yeah, we did see a
(03:03):
lot of this there. He Dabor Worthy played a significant
amount only in one preseason game and just gets the
Lions and you could tell that day the Lions were
really struggling with how to deal with this speed and uh.
And that's the thing we saw that day. We saw
against Baltimore as well, was that not only is he
(03:28):
making big plays, is Worthy making big plays. He's opening
things by it with his presence for other guys, and
that's what I think has the chief maybe most excited
about this is that they feel like a lot of
what Rashi Rice was able to do the other day
was able was due to Worthy's presence on the field
at his speed. So we'll see how the Bengals and
(03:50):
other future opponents deal with Worthy and Brown when he
comes back. But I think there's a lot to work
with there, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Well that would be my immediate because obviously going to
school here in Cincinnati. Travis Kelcey following his career very closely.
Three catches for thirty four yards in the opener, but
as you mentioned, Rashid Rice had nine targets. He goes
for one hundred and three yards in that game. The
more consistency Kansas City gets out of Rice, out of
(04:19):
Worthy in others, it doesn't allow teams to dictate double
teams to Travis Kelcey. How much does this now help
Travis kelce and Isaiah Pacheco going forward. The more weapons
that Patrick Mahomes has in the passing game, well yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
I think it'll help all those guys, you know, Baltimore
has been burned in recent games against the Chiefs by Kelsey,
including the AFC Championship game last year, so they sort
of made it a priority that he wasn't gonna beat
him this guy. But you know, here's the thing I've
been saying about Travis Kelcey all off season. You know,
I still think he's a significant player. He's going to
(04:57):
be thirty five in October. This offseason was about sort
of steering the passing game away from Travis Kelcey and
making it so where when Travis Kelcey doesn't have a
big day, the Chiefs can still be productive. And that's
what the Chiefs were trying to do here is not
just add speed and big playability. That was certainly a goal,
(05:20):
but it was also, hey, let's give Mahomes more options
so if the opponent is successful in taking Kelsey out
of the game, that they can still be successful. And
so far, I think they're often a good start with that.
But you know, we'll see if the season goes home.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
When you look you think of Patrick Mahomes, everyone knows
it's it's the best quarterback in the NFL. And what's
been asked of him in recent years and and and
you know, shouldering a big load for this team. Now,
I look with the offensive line playing as they are,
I look at a guy like as Isaiah Pacheco. You
hear the word balance in offense a lot. How balance?
(06:00):
Now does this Kansas City offensive attack feel as opposed
to recent years? It feels like they can beat you
in a plethora of ways.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Yeah, certainly in the passing game, I think that's true.
You know, they didn't run the ball very well against Baltimore,
so that's an area I know they'd like to get better.
But you know the thing about that is Andy reads
calling the plays, and as long as Andy Reid's calling
the plays, the running game is never going to be
you know what the Chiefs rely on. I mean, it's
(06:29):
always going to be a pass first offense. And so
you know that's where there their brand is really buttered
here and that's where they needed to make the most improvement.
But yeah, I mean Pacheco can be a weapon for them.
I fought for most of the last couple of years
now that he's been sort of an unutilized, underutilized guy
(06:51):
for them that they didn't they weren't taking full advantage
of him and maybe this is the year. You know,
he did some good things as a receiver the other day,
maybe this is the year that he becomes that kind
of player, Adam.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
When you look at defensively for the Kansas City Chiefs,
I know Chris Jones is a staple of that defense,
but how excited are the folks in Kansas City when
you see how Jalen Watson came out and played against
the Baltimore Ravens or essentially the defense as a whole
against a very good offense, a very good quarterback in
Lamar Jackson, the reigning MVP winner. What were the overall
(07:25):
takeaways from the Chiefs defense.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Yeah, I'm still wondering where they are exactly defensively. You know,
I talked to earlier about a lot of guys missing
post are all of training camp, and most of those
players around defense, Jalen Watson didn't play a lot in
training camp for the preseason, Chris Jones didn't play in
the preseason, didn't practice a lot. Nick Bolton one of
(07:49):
their linebackers, Justin Reid one of their safeties. So they've
had a number of guys defensively who are still rounding
into regular season shape and getting used to the game again,
and so I just don't know where they are. I mean,
they certainly got some things done the other night against
(08:11):
a team that can be a real problem in a
quarterback that can be a real problem, but I still
don't know. I don't know what to expect from them
on Sunday against an opponent that's given them a lot
of trouble. And I know maybe this is a different
version of the Bengals, but still I just don't know
where they are defensively. You know, it's easy to forget
(08:31):
now after last season when they started the season strong
defensively and played that way all season long. But Steve
Spagnolo's defenses have been since he's been with the Chiefs
of generally until last year, taking some time the first
few games were sort of trying to find out what
(08:52):
works best and what doesn't work for them, and before
they settle down a little bit and start playing better,
they do get better, or have got better as the
season has gone on, and I'm wondering whether that's the
case this year, where they're still trying to figure out
exactly what they've got, what works, what doesn't work, and
it's going to take a few games until they're maybe
(09:13):
or like the defense that we knew him to be last.
Speaker 5 (09:16):
Year sounds pretty familiar with what the Bengals seem to
do at the beginning of every season on offense. What's
the conversation like in Kansas City when the Bengals are
coming to town, and especially after the Bengals lose to
New England the way that they did. Is it any
different around the team? Do they approach this game differently
because of this quote unquote rivalry between these two teams?
Speaker 4 (09:39):
I don't think so. You know, it is an opponent
that certainly has the Chiefs attention, that's for sure. You know,
after the games that these teams have had the last
three four years, it's definitely something that has the Chiefs attention.
You know. It's kind of interesting that the Chiefs and
Bengals since Joe Burrow has been there, have always played.
(10:01):
There's been four games, and they have always been late
in the season or and even last year's game when
Burrow was out, They've always been in November, December or
the two playoff games obviously in January. So I think
the Chiefs are maybe they're not necessarily saying that's certainly
not saying it out loud, but I think they feel
(10:22):
like it's a break getting the Bengals at the time
of year that they are when certainly based off last week,
but also just based off what we've seen from the
Bengals in the early season the last few years that maybe,
you know, maybe they're not the team that the Chiefs
would be seeing in November or December, if that makes
any sense, But maybe this is a good time to
(10:44):
touch the Bengals. So we'll see if that's right on
Sunday whether that's right, but maybe it is.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
I know there's been some chatter nationally that this might
be the best Chiefs team of the last couple of years.
I'm curious to know if you agree with that. And
I know you mentioned the defense learning to gel over
the first few weeks of the season. What exactly is
the biggest weakness for the Chiefs right now?
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Yeah, in terms of whether it's the best Chiefs team,
I don't know. I think it's too early to say.
You know, on paper, certainly it's a formidable team, you know.
I do think it's interesting though, if you look, the
Chiefs were a team that made a lot of foster
moves at the bottom of their roster when teams made
(11:31):
their cuts, you know, right to cut down time. They
obviously were not real thrilled with a lot of their
depths at certain spots, and so I'm wondering a little
bit if things go southward for them in terms of
injuries and what's not going to look like. Do they
have the depth to withstand that they have done a
nice job being able to fill in for injured guys
(11:53):
in the past. I wondering whether that's going to be
the case this year if they have some injuries. So
that's one thing that I got my eye on on
them as the season goes on in terms of what
they're capable of and whether this might be the best
version of the Chiefs in the last few years. And
as far as what they need to improve defensively, you know,
(12:14):
they're they're still trying to figure out a playing rotation
in the In the secondary, they really were having trouble
like that. You know, they traded l Jerry Steve, one
of the best corners from the last few years. They
traded him to Tennessee, and they sort of had troubled
identifying a suitable replacement for him, and so and and
(12:37):
he did so many different things for the Chiefs that
they've even just plugging a body in there. Well, that
body necessarily can't do everything fill all the roles that
Sneed did last year over ahead in recent years. So
I think they're trying to figure out some things at
the back end without him on. Their pass rush wasn't
(12:58):
particularly pope the other night. I think maybe the opponent
had something to do with add in terms of Lamar
Jackson's escapability and his elusiveness. But you know, Joe Burrow
has been a problem for them to sack a lot
in the games they played against the Bengals recent years.
So we'll see where they go with this. But I
(13:21):
think those are some of the issues that they have
to address, Adam.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
When you look at what this team is accomplished, back
to back Super Bowl champions, it would be very easy
at times to just say, Okay, let's let's ride off
into the sunset. Travis Kelsey, you mentioned how old he's getting.
He's having a lot of success off the field. He
made it very apparent early that that a three peat
was the goal that they're coming back to do this again.
From a from just an offseason standpoint, from the way
(13:46):
this team approached camp. A lot of conversation in Cincinnati
is about are they approaching camp the right way when
they continuously have these slow starts. Just from a leadership standpoint,
from what you see in those guys, how much of
a tone is set by Travis Kelcey or a pot
Mahomes or a coach Reid early in the offseason, early
in training camp to get the most out of this
(14:06):
team each and every year.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Oh No, you know how it is. There's certain guys
in the locker room who everybody listens to when they talk,
and on the Chiefs, two of those people are Travis
Kelcey and Patrick Malomes, So you know they sort of
set the tone. And you're right early on. I mean,
in the moments after the Super Bowl last year, they
were talking about a three peace So, no doubt on
(14:33):
those guys are big in that in that effort. Here.
The other thing I'll say about Andy Reid is his
training camps are an amazing phenomenon. And I encourage anybody
who ever gets a chance to get up to Saint
Joseph to watch them practice during the summer. They should
(14:54):
because there's there's there's it's just football. There's no fighting,
there's no extracurricular stuff. They're just you can see him
day on a daily basis working to get better. And
I know from previous Chief coaches that's not how everybody
does it, because in the past the Chiefs, you could
(15:15):
see they were goofing off a training camp and fighting
and wasting time at practice, and you could tell when
the regular seasons started that was not going to be
a team that was ready to go. And you'd never
say that about the Chiefs. You know, they've started off
a number of seasons on nine and oh. There's been
a two or three, five and oh. Since Andy Reid's
been here, I think there's been a four to oh
(15:36):
and Yeah, the Chiefs have been a good team. But
they come out of the gate generally very quickly. You know,
last year they lost the open against the Lions, then
won six straight. I mean they've so they come out
of the gate very quickly. And that's not a mistake,
that's not a coincidence. That's because of how they operate
and how Andy Reid sets the tone at training camps.
(15:57):
So you know, I see what the Bengals do and
I just I wonder a little bit. Hey, this is
just from Afar. No one has told me this, but
that just looks like a team that doesn't take training
camp seriously. They've been able to figure out the last
few years. They've been able to figure it out as
the season went on. And sure, you don't want to
peek in September, there's no doubt about that. But I
(16:19):
don't feel like the Chiefs have done that. So I
wonder what's going on with the Bengals at training camp
and whether they are, you know, putting in the kind
of work that you need to do to get ready
for a regular season.
