Welcome back since e three to sixty. You just heard
it right there, our number three, a service of Penn station.
On this the Friday Football Frenzy ESBN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati
Sports Station. We know a lot of football has already
been discussed today, Let's talk about the other football with
the man covering FC Cincinnati, the voice of FC Cincinnati,
Tom Galader. You know miss Tommy g each and every Friday, Tommy,
(00:52):
what's going on?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Hey Tony, Tony, Tony, good afternoon, Happy to be here
with you. What a Friday and the Queen City whether
it's beautiful? The Reds have their new manager. My guardians
start the Alds tomorrow and FC Cincinnati Fan Appreciation Day,
regular season home finale, and an opportunity to get right.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
I'm doing great. How are you? I'm great? Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
By the way, Bengals Ravens on Sunday, What a weekend
it is. That's right before I dive in FC Cincinnati.
I do you just use the word my guardians, Well,
your guardians no longer associate with Terry Francona. He's the
Cincinnati red You know what, what were your immediate thoughts,
because you know, he stepped away, he retired, and a
(01:36):
year later, here he is with the Cincinnati Reds and
a huge splash for the Cincinnati Reds.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah. Absolutely, And and to be crystal clear, I don't
let the Ohio Cup come between.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
That's my thought. I mean, what did you think of
the Ohio Cup for the right away?
Speaker 4 (01:49):
You know, I don't. I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
I think it gets more intense, But I don't let
the Ohio Cup come come behind between my appreciation for
the Reds, my fandom of the Reds one hundred and
fifty eight games a year, and and my lifelong love
for the Guardian.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
So I just want to I want to make that
part clear.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
But I started getting text last night about it, and
I immediately thought.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
That was a great hire for the Reds.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
I mean, I think the name was out there because
he was available, But then the folks that I had
talked to this week, I don't think there was a
lot of chatter that it was realistic that it was
gonna be Tito. Obviously, his track record speaks for himself.
I think it's what thirty six hundred games he's managed.
I did fantastic in Boston. I thought he did fantastic
and won a lot of games in Cleveland, And if
(02:30):
I'm a Reds fan, I'm pretty excited about it today.
I just hope his health is good and I'm sure
that's something that he evaluated during his year off, and
I would imagine that it's good enough that he can
step back into a dugout. But no, I'd I'd be
really excited if I was a Reds fan today.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Let's talk about the Orange and Blue, because yes, there
are two different avenues to talk about. One there's the
team that still sits one point behind Columbus and for
second place in the Eastern Conference standings, and then there's
this other avenue where it just doesn't like they're playing
their best soccer right now, and you look, you only
got two matches left in the regular season. They lose
(03:07):
at home last week into LAFC. They lose earlier this
week to New York City. What is kind of the
state of this team right now when you're evaluating some
shaky play, but also where they still sit in the
standings is a really good spot.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yeah, I think it's.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Look, your work that you put in across the course
of the year puts you in a place now where
you're not in a panic mode where you need to
lock in home field or you need to lock in
even a playoff spot, right because the team has been
consistently good enough all season that the drop and form
over the course of the week, you know, isn't the end.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Of the world, but is it concerning Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
And I think that Pat Newton was the first one
to tell you as much that he knows his group
needs to come together and they need to play better.
If you listen to either of our broadcast, he's very
frank about it in the four interviews that we did
with him, you know, at halftime in post game of
those matches, and he wasn't happy with the way the
team performed and understands that those performances have to be better.
And you know, he owned some of that after the
(04:07):
game in New York City and said, look, some of
that starts with me. My messaging to the group has
to be better. And I think that we need to
see more intensity from this group to start.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
I think I think everybody knows that.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
And to say that their performances have been flat out
of the locker room the last two games is absolutely correct.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
I think the really disappointing one was LAFC.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
When LFC were coming off the US Open Cup win,
a celebration afterword champagne in the locker room. I would
imagine the celebration carrydown somewhere else. They didn't fly in,
they didn't get into late Friday, and it looked like
the other way around.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Looked like a team that was.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Tired, that had celebrated Wednesday night, and LAFC looked like
a team that was rested.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
And I think that was disappointing. But I also know that.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
That FC Cincinnati have the horses and they have the
players to be successful and come together and have a
great playoff run. They just have to figure out exactly
what those rotations look like in the matchups and the
different pairings of players.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
As they push forward.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
You know, with this game on Saturday against a red
hot Orlando team coming in, it's been as good as
anybody in the league. And then you turn around two
weeks later and you have Philadelphia whom might be fighting
for one of the last playoff spots. So it's gonna
be a telling two games going into the playoffs. But
you'd much rather that we're talking about this now than
at the end of October when the playoffs are starting.
(05:26):
The team's trying to find themselves. You just hope they
can get it done over the next two.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Games and finding themselves. I understand going into the season
there was a ton of new roles that were established
on this team, new players coming in, players leaving. You
deal with injuries all throughout the season, international breaks, the
players that leave for Team USA, do to everything that
goes into it. If this roster is one hundred percent,
if this roster is right, does it Do they have
(05:50):
the firepower offensively and defensively to compete for the MLS Cup.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
I believe so, especially defensively when Jidozi's healthy and we're
not going to see him Tomorrow's you miss a second
consecutive game. But the hope is that he's ready for
the Philadelphia match and decision day, and and worst case
than if he wasn't ready for that, then probably for
the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
You know.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
So that's a big concern because obviously we talked about
center back quite a bit this season.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Gotta have Shidosi.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Back and in the mix for the playoffs, and and
then I think really as you build out the team
from there, you have everybody else available. The question becomes
who are your strikers? And we've talked about here. I
think u Yakuba is one of them, But who's the
one next to him, Who's the one that's that's taking
that Brandon Basquez role that you fear as a defender
(06:39):
on the other team that you know can punish you
at any time. And we haven't been able to answer
that question. And I think that's the part that really
you want to see get sorted out of these two games,
is you know, a definitive starting eleven for this team.
The lineup has not been repeated yet this season. That's
wild for the game and forty one now, I guess
(07:02):
and so you really want to, you know, have a
predictable lineup, right, Playoffs aren't the time where you're supposed
to be throwing like curveball.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
Oh, this person's starting. I didn't see that coming. You know,
you want.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
People healthy, and I think, look, Sergio will be out
of concussion protocols hopefully after this week, and Chidosie, like
we said, hopefully back for the Philadelphia game in two weeks.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
And then you had your choice eleven and I.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Guess then the question is you want it to be
settled as to who those strikers are, because I think
the rest of the positions are pretty settled, and then
you just need the team firing on all cylinders. If
that's the case, they can compete with anybody in the league.
I truly believe that.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Fan appreciation Saturday against Orlando, one more trip to Philly
with a little break in between. What is the top
one or two things that you need or want to
see accomplished in the last two going into the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Well, I want to see the team start fast. You
know that they were really good at that early in
the season. Ray and I talked about it a bit
on the broadcast on Wednesday, night. You know, they had
that first half of the season. They'd only conceded the
one goal early. That was against Frankie Amaya in what
the nineteenth minute or something against Red Bulls. Now you're
starting to see teams jump on on the Orange and
(08:17):
Blue early and then they got their backs.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Against the wall.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
They're fighting from behind, and then that just makes it
more difficult. So I think first we need that, we
need to see the quick start.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
We need to see the intensity from that opening whistle.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Remember the Orlando game back in May, we just scored
seventeen seconds and fastest going club history, and it was
kind of on the play off the opening whistle.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I want to see the team come out and attack
in the first fifteen minutes.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Orlando has conceded goals in the first fifteen minutes, I
think eleven this season in the first fifteen minutes, So
there's opportunities there to jump on them.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
And if you could jump on Orlando, that kind of.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Changes their game plan and it takes them out of
what they're comfortable doing. So I think that that's going
to be very very important in this game. And I
think just seeing the continuity as a group, the passing
hasn't been great these two games in which the team
is lost, and I think if the passing is there,
then that will lead to some of these offensive opportunities
(09:09):
to be more complete for Ccincinnati in the final.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Third, Tommy, when you now look ahead, I know for
the team, and we've discussed this a little bit of
the team, it's one match at a time. What do
those potential matchups look like? Based on again, they're just
one point behind Columbus for that two seed because of
an unbelievable performance from Messi earlier in the week in Columbus.
But have you allowed yourself to look ahead to what
(09:35):
some of these potential matchups could look like?
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
You know, we sit there and stare at the standy's
and I was just talking to folks to the facility
and we were laughing because right now, as the three seed,
which is where Cincinnati sit, and Columbus have a game
in hand, so they can only be the two or
the three. Columbus and Cincinnati will will occupy those two
slots and right now to one point adventage to Columbus.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
But as the.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Three seed today, if the playoffs were starting tonight after
you can County even playing in the first round. Wait
for it for the third consecutive year, the New York
Red polls.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
It's kind of boring, you know when you think about it.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Uh, you know, but but but you've lost to him
twice this year, so you'd better be going and have
series with an edge. If that's the case, you could
be playing New York City you just lost to the
other night, but you're beating two other games at TQO Stadium.
You could see Charlotte depending on how things shake out.
And you have Orlando I think as a four or five,
so I don't think that they they would fall that far,
(10:31):
but maybe they get to the six if you were
the three, so so that would be a possibility as
well of you know, if not seeing them, then you
see them at some point. The top seven teams are
playoff clinched. The only seed that's locked in right now
is Miami and then the eight nine ers to still
be settled to that wild card game in the Eastern Conference.
So no, I think it's I think it's interesting to
(10:53):
look at and and you think about it, and you
want that two seed, right you want to jump ahead
of Columbus because then if you play. If the Seeds
hold and you will get out of your first round,
that two three game would be here as opposed to
having to go up throw to Columbus into a very
hostile environment, which obviously you would love to have it
here and try to avenge that playoff loss against them
last year. So no, I think, you know, there's still
(11:16):
a lot to be played for in these two games,
and you know a lot of storylines to keep an
eye on and see how these matchups shake out. You know,
as we were leaving Jersey on Wednesday night, you know
some of us were kind of joking, well, we be
that game with that Red Bull Arena. You know we're
going to be back here in a couple of weeks
for the playoffs, for the second game of the first round,
because that's just how it goes, right, So who knows
(11:38):
if I you know, I'm not allowed to bet on soccer,
but man, I wouldn't be shocked if we end up
back in at Red Bull Arena.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Fantastic stuff, Tom Galader. As always, before I do let
you go, I have to ask, are you in must
win mode for the Cleveland Browns this week? Is this
a must win?
Speaker 3 (11:53):
At Washington Tony, Tony, if you're not in must win
mode every week, what are you doing when? When?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
When is jamis getting the nod?
Speaker 4 (12:01):
I mean hopefully soon. I don't know, man, I have
a headache.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Maybe it's because of them, I don't It's just it's
very frustrating. Said, yeah, it must win, absolutely, but again
it's one of the hottest teams to start the season. Yeah,
I don't know. When I was talking to somebody today
and you're kind of saying, you know, it wouldn't be
surprising to see him, you know, kind of play up
to the level of where the Commanders are playing right
now and create some issues and have a really good game.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
But I could also.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
See it just getting lopsided and out of control. So
it's been frustrating. You know, you have Nick Chubb kind
of lingering there now, starting.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
To practice coming back into the mix, so you'd like.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
To believe they can compete, and you know, then you
have Nick coming back in soon because the running game
hasn't been very good with your own forward But yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
Don't know, it's Onny, It's it's frustrating.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Do you like do you like the matchup with the
Tigers for the Guardians.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
I do accept man, there Red Hot like you're getting
the team in Major League Baseball coming in. I think
I like it better than the Astros because for whatever reason,
the Guardian's always struggled with the Astros.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
So I think I think I do.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
I'll let you know more about seven o'clock on Monday
night after I've watched Game two, so we'll see.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Tommy, always appreciative of your time, man. Enjoy the weekend.
Was his three matches in eight days?
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Yeah, three in eight day so yeah, you never stopped masts.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
With the trip to Jersey.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
No, I take a little deep breath after this one
on Saturday, and then get ready for Decision Day and
then we're in the playoffs and hopefully go until early December.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Tommy, always appreciate your time, man. We'll talk again next week.
Until then, have a great week.
