This is Skyline Chile. Since hethree to sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati,
sponsored in part by Skyline Chile.Stop by Skyline Chile for a three way
or cheeze Cony today. Feeling good, It's Skyline time. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Hi, Hello and welcome Cincy three sixty back

(00:23):
underway Thursday edition right here on ESPNfifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. I'm Austin
Elmore riding solo today and for theforeseeable future, as Tony Pike is on
Daddy Doody welcoming child number three tohis beautiful family. Earlier this week,

(00:44):
Tony was asking for streaming recommendations lastnight because his shift was about to begin
with the newborn overnight. So Iam sure he is lacking sleep, and
I'm sure he's listening right now becausehe just can't get enough of sin.
Looking forward to the return of TonyPike. In the meantime, there is
a lot going on Reds with abig win last night on Ellie Dela Cruz

(01:08):
Bobblehead Night, we have some thingsto say, maybe about Ellie de la
Cruz, Maybe a conversation to havelet's just consider a couple of things about
Ellie de la Cruz. We'll talkabout that hero of the night last night
though, Jamer Candelario, couple ofhome runs for the Reds, and why
last night is the perfect example ofwhat the Reds need to do over the

(01:32):
next month. I'll tell you mythoughts on that. Coming up at the
one o'clock hour, you will hearfrom the Bengals head coach Zach Taylor,
who met with the media a littlebit of go and as the Bengals wrapped
up Day three of mandatory mini camp. They will reconvene about a month six

(01:53):
weeks from now for training camp priorto the start of the twenty twenty four
season. Joe Burrow did not practicetoday. Neither did Jamar Chase. Neither
of those two things are surprising. We can talk a little bit about that
going on, and I have somequestions about Zach Taylor in particular, especially
the way Joe Danaman talked about himwhen we had our conversation yesterday. If

(02:14):
you missed that ESPN fifteen thirty dotcom, check out the podcast page almost
half an hour with Joe Daniman yesterday. He was so good we just talked
about everything and provided he probably providedsome awesome insight. Check that out at
two o'clock today, though, MikePetralia from CLNS Media, host of the
Code Reds podcast, covers the Redsand the Bengals. He's been going back

(02:38):
and forth from the stadiums this week. He will stop by to give us
some perspective on that both those teams, the Reds and the Bengals. And
the Bengals news of the day isthat Ted Krris has signed a contract extension
that adds another year onto his deal, meaning he is signed through the twenty
twenty five season. It's about twoyears to twelvish million dollars. According to

(03:00):
Ted Kerriss, he said he wantsto retire a Bengal, says he'll play
as long as they will have him. So good news for the Bengals.
Their entire offensive line is signed throughtwenty twenty five or longer right now,
so that's certainly some good news.Amarius Mims is the only player left out
of the bengals ten draft picks.Nine out of ten have signed. Amarius

(03:23):
Mimms is the one who has not, and that's because earlier today Chris Jenkins.
Not only did Ted Kerris sign anextension, but Chris Jenkins, the
second round pick out of Michigan defensivetackle, signed his rookie deal with the
Bengals, meaning there is only oneleft and that is Amarus Mims. And
we've heard some good things from AmariusMims getting some first team reps over the

(03:45):
course of the offseason. Despite thesigning of Trent Brown earlier this year,
Amarius Mims seems to be making goodprogress and a good first impression with the
Cincinnati Bengals. Let's all of thistoday and what we talked about yesterday and
what we're about to talk about isthe review of yesterday's top sports stories,

(04:05):
brought to you by Klaus Roofing Systemof Cincinnati, the trusted local roofing and
gutter company. Visit krs Sincy witha y dot com Other news, what
else is going on around the world? NBA Finals Last night, the Boston
Celtics held off a twenty two totwo run in the fourth quarter by Luka

(04:28):
Doncik in the Dallas Mavericks to goup three to oh three to oh in
the NBA Finals. Game three ofthe Stanley Cup Finals are tonight. The
Florida Panthers lead that series over Edmontontwo games to nothing. They are looking
to go up three to oh tonight. I think that series is back in
Edmonton, if I'm not mistaken. Also happening last night, Tom Brady was

(04:51):
inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame. His number twelve was officially retired.
They're gonna put a statue up ofhim, and Tom Brady had some really
cool moments, a great speech lastnight. At Gillette Stadium, it was
it was crazy because the Celtics werein or in Dallas to play the MAVs.
And at TV Garden downtown Boston wherethe Celtics play, they had a

(05:12):
watch party and that arena was packed. And then thirty five minutes forty minutes
up the road at Jellette Stadium inFoxborough, that stadium was packed for the
Tom Brady induction and there were bothtwo stadiums packed, no sporting event happening
at either one of them. Prettycool moment for Boston sports fans there.
And then obviously the Celtics go upthree to zero in that NBA news.

(05:34):
Also, JJ Reddick has emerged asthe favorite now for the Los Angeles Lakers
head coaching job. This according toAdrian woj Narowski of ESPN. If you
remember, Sham's reported this prior tothe Danny Hurley situation with the Lakers,
saying JJ Reddick was a candidate, then Danny Hurley got involved. Now it

(05:55):
seems like they're going back to JJReddick, and I'm sure if JJ Reddick
gets hired, then they'll say JJwas the guy we wanted all along.
Kind of how that works. Also, yesterday really cool we talked about a
little bit, but just continuing tosee the stories of Jerry West, who
passed away yesterday at the age ofeighty six. To see the stories that
so many people told about him,and the way that the league honored him,

(06:16):
and the NBA Finals and everything lastnight, really really cool to see
that the US Open is underway atPinehurst number two and Tiger Woods got things
started off with a birdie. Heled for a couple of holes. He
was tied for the lead at theUS Open. Struggled after that. We
will continue to update you on thelatest on the US Open leader board.

(06:41):
Brooks Koepka playing some good golf earlierthis morning as well, so a lot
to get to we'll keep those updatescoming over the course of the day,
and tomorrow's show, by the way, is going to be a normal,
typical Friday show. We're going tobe joined by Tom Gelerder at two PM
ASFC Cincinnati prepares to come back fromthe international break, and Charlie Goldsmith at

(07:04):
one pm on the Reds in theBengals as well. And by the way,
speaking of the international break, lastnight, United States men's national team
took on Brazil and that game wasa one to one draw, and many
people expected after the way that theUnited States was embarrassed against Columbia. I
believe it was that Brazil would embarrassthem even more. Greg Burholter status as

(07:28):
the head coaches up in arms. But Greg Burholter appears he will, I
mean, he's going to be thecoach for a while. But a good
result for the United States men's nationalteam last night against Brazil. Okay,
what do we want to talk about. Let's start with the Reds. Listen,
anytime you split with a team that'stwenty games over five hundred and has

(07:51):
been as great as Cleveland has been, primarily with their bullpen, you'll take
it. I have no problems Ifeel totally good about this team splitting with
Cleveland. The Reds are two gamesunder five hundred. They're still right in
the thick of it in the NationalLeague Central and in the National League Wild
Card race. I thought Alexis Diazlooked good last night, a one two

(08:15):
three ninth inning I saw, becauseyou know, I follow so many different
people, Browns wise, Cleveland sportswise, I saw a lot of people
not happy with the Guardians lineup lastnight and a couple of the decisions by
Steven Vote, the Cleveland manager. But sometimes you gotta take you gotta play
the team in front of you,and that's what the Reds did last night.
Nicolodolo was huge for Cincinnati. Comingoff of a bullpen day in which

(08:39):
it felt like everybody in that bullpenpitched. The Reds needed Nicklodolo to go
and eat some innings. And hegot into some trouble with the pitch count.
And he did throw a ton ofpitches I think one hundred and two
total on the night, sixty ofthem for strikes. He got in some
trouble, he walked a couple ofguys uncharacteristic of Nicklodolo, but he was

(09:00):
able to give the Reds six innings, meaning the bullpenally needed to cover the
last three. They did that finalline on the dolo last night, six
innings, seven hits, two runs, two earned, three walks, six
strikeouts. His ERA is now downto two point nine to three and even
though even though pitcher win lost statsare stupid, it does have a good

(09:22):
look to it. He's seven andtwo on the season. Lucas Simms came
in, he pitched a scoreless inning, he walked a guy because it wouldn't
be a Lucasimms appearance without walking aguy. Sam Mal came in another scoreless
inning from him. His ERA isdown to one point eighty four and as
I mentioned, Alexis Diaz a scorelessninth inning for the Reds to get the
split. The Reds and Guardians willplay at the end of the year.

(09:46):
Like two of the last four gamesI think of the season for the Reds
are against Cleveland in Cleveland for thefinal two games in the Ohio Cup.
How about this last night Elie dela Cruz Bobblehead Night forty two thousand,
four hundred and twenty seven at GreatAmerican Ballpark. It is the largest weekday

(10:07):
game, not including opening day inthe history of that ballpark. How cool
is that I was there last night. It was a fun atmosphere. It
was a fun experience, and youknow, I had had a couple of
friends come down that wanted to getthe l E bobblehead, and so I
went down real like right after theshow. I went downtown and I hung

(10:28):
out at a couple of places, and I was kind of scoping out to
see where the line's at. Igot down there at three point thirty.
There were people waiting in line.I'm like, gosh, I'm gonna have
to be back here sooner than Ithought. So I go to a couple
establishments, go down to the grail, drink a sency light, the whole
nine yards. Come back around fourfour fifteen, even more people are in
line. I'm like, all right, well, I'm gonna go get us

(10:48):
a spot in line. And Isat there for an hour, hour and
a half until they opened the gates. And some of the photos that came
out from the lines for that Elliede la Cruz bobblehead was crazy, crazy,
but thankfully we were able to getour hands on some and a couple
of my friends were able to getto an Ellie bobblehead. Really really cool

(11:09):
stuff for the fans there. Andwhat's been nuts to me is to see
the Elie de la Cruz bobbleheads immediatelygoing on eBay for crazy amounts of money
upboards of eighty to one hundred dollars. That these bobbleheads are going for just

(11:30):
ridiculous. It is his first everReds bobblehead. It's the first ever Red's
Stadium giveaway bobblehead of Ellie de laCruz and it's him stealing a base in
the City Connect uniform. So tocollectors, that has a lot of value
and too fans. Fans just thinkit's cool. And there were people all
over the place last night with Eliede la Cruz bobbleheads. Even saw a

(11:50):
story of a you a young fanwho didn't get one because of the line
and someone from the Reds was ableto give him his. That was really
cool. The Reds continue to dogreat stuff with the bibbleheads. The City
Connect was a great idea this yearand it's always cool to see the excitement
around the bibblehead giveaways. I wonderwhat it is like this could be a

(12:13):
talkback question, what's the best stadiumgiveaway you've ever had, or you've ever
seen, or you've ever gotten,or whatever it might be. There was
a gentleman that listens to our showthat went to the Reds series in Seattle
earlier this year and they had twonights or all I think it was all
three nights in that series. Youcould get a Ken Griffy Junior bibblehead and

(12:35):
they were like variations of like whatuniform he was wearing and it's him robbing
a home run, that famous playwhere he robbed a home run. And
this guy who listens to our show, he went both to two of the
games and he sent me one ofthe bobbleheads. It's so cool. It's
one of the best bibbleheads I've everseen him, like up on the wall
and you have to like attach it. It's awesome. The Jake Frayley bobblehead

(12:58):
from earlier this year where you havethe cape on and the Viking helmet and
like the bent bat that is sick. There's been a few over the years
that have been really really cool stadiumgiveaways, not just the Reds but all
time. I'm curious to know fromyou five one, three, seven,
four, nine, fifteen thirty isthe phone number you can call in tell

(13:18):
me the best stadium giveaway. Youcan leave a talkback. iHeartRadio app search
ESPN fifteen thirty. Press the playbutton. Give me the best stadium giveaway
you've ever had. I know mine. I'll talk about it a little bit
later on mine. I use tothis day every day. It was a
stadium giveaway that I use just aboutevery single day. It's the best one

(13:41):
I think any team has ever donein the history of stadium giveaways. Talk
about that coming up in just alittle bit. You will hear from the
Red Skipper David Bell. You willhear also from jam Er Candelario, the
hero of the night last night, and from Nickolodolo as well. Got a
lot of audio tea get to comingup today as the Reds are off today,

(14:03):
head to Milwaukee for a three gameset, three game weekend set again
the Brewers. This is only thesecond time the Reds have seen the Brewers.
They came here for a four gameset earlier this season. The fourth
game got rained out and postponed tolater on. But right now, as
the NL Central shapes up, theReds Cubs and Cardinals are all tied for

(14:24):
second place and seven games back ofthe Brewers, who are now forty and
twenty eight. Pittsburgh is seven anda half games back. So the Reds
and Cubs are thirty three and thirtyfive. The Cardinals are thirty two and
thirty four. The Pirates are thirtytwo and thirty five. So it's really
tight in the National League Central rightnow. When you look at the National

(14:45):
League as a whole, the Marlinsand Rockies they're out of it. They're
twenty games under five hundred. Butthe Mets are three and a half games
out of the wild card. TheDiamondbacks are a game and a half out
of the wild card. Pittsburgh andWashington is one game out of the wild
card. The Cardinals, Cubs, and Reds are all half game out of
the wild card spot behind the SanFrancisco Giants. Did mention yesterday that the

(15:09):
Dodgers went and got Cavin Bigio fromthe Toronto Blue Jays. Now Bigio is
not having a good season, butit was interesting that the Dodgers made that
move and they go and get aguy that could potentially be an impact player
for them. I think back toKevin Pillar, who left the Chicago White
Sox earlier this year, he joineda new team. He's hitting the cover
off the baseball. The way thatthe Reds game went last night, I

(15:35):
was kind of twing with this thoughta lot last night or yesterday and during
the show, and I kind ofalluded to it, alluded to it during
the show. But the way thegame went last night, to me,
created a clear path for what thisteam should be looking for when they think
about being buyers over the next monthand a half. I think this is

(15:56):
what Nick Kral needs to do,and I think the way things went last
night is the perfect example of thatover the course of the next month and
a half and ultimately through the restof the season, and we'll talk about
how Noelvie Marte plays into that, how Jamer Candelario plays into that, Spencer
Steer and others when we come back. Also want to get your reaction.
Did you get the ELI bobblehead?Did you fight off the crowds, did

(16:17):
you go to the game last night? How are you feeling about the Reds?
At thirty three and thirty five,All Red's in our Number one Bengals
Talkbacks in our number two Reds Bengals, Mike Petrellia and our number three Quick
Hits and Locks of the night comingup at the end of the show with
Rick Yu Chino. Load Management Junehas started for Moegger. He's off the

(16:37):
rest of the week. Rick YuChino is in for him from three to
six this afternoon, so we'll talkto Chino and see what he's got coming
up on his show. He alwayshas some good perspectives and always loved the
energy that Uchino brings. So we'vegot Pinehurst updates from the US Open.
I do got to I want toplay some audio from Brian Windhorse of ESPN.

(17:02):
Just eviscerated, eviscerating, Luka doncik. It's the best thing I've ever
heard. Zach Taylor coming up,a little bit from Paul and Moegger earlier
this week, Paul Dayner, abunch of Reds audio and you five one,
three, seven, four, ninefifteen thirty is the phone number.
Call and be a part of theshow. That way, you can also
tweet it me at Audiel more Aut y E L M O r E.

(17:23):
And thank you to those of youwho follow me on Twitter. Uh
just went over five thousand followers. You know, I get these Facebook memories
that pop up from time to time, and they're like from fifteen years ago
when I was asking people to followme on Twitter and I was getting close
to two hundred followers, and nowhere we are at five k. It

(17:44):
means nothing ultimately in the long runto a lot of people, but five
k is really cool for me.And I appreciate all the support that I've
been getting as I try to figureout life in the radio business. And
I appreciate that. If you don'tfollow me, now, go ahead and
do that. At audio more auT Y E L O R E.
All Right, Pac Show coming upThursday edition. You're listening to Sincy three

(18:06):
to sixty, brought to you bySkyline Chile. On the Home of the
Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty. Hey alexaIbe. A couple of seconds of the
played, he come on, hitin the air, down the right field
line and deep right back pat thewall, looks up and is gone.
Candelario's second home run tonight. Thiswould have go ahead, free run bomb

(18:32):
into the Cleveland bullpen. That's whatit sounded like last night On seven hundred
wl W with Jamer Candelario hit hissecond homer of the night, a three
run blast that put the Reds ontop of the Guardians. They did not
look back. They won the gamefour to two, all four rbi off
the bat of Jamer Candelario. Andthat is why he is our power player

(18:56):
of yesterday's game. Brought to youby Cincinnati tax Resolute, powered by TOAF
Sheldon have no fear. TOAF ishere and Jamer Candelario was there last night
for the Cincinnati Reds. Big bigwin for them. You'll hear from Jamer
in just a couple of minutes.Phone lines open five, one, three,
seven, four, nine, fifteenthirty high. I'm Austin Elmore with

(19:18):
you until three o'clock today. TonyPike back in a couple of weeks.
I thought last night's game was theperfect example of what this team needs moving
forward, because the way they arebuilt, they can be really fun and

(19:40):
they can be really exciting, andthey can play small ball and they can
take the extra base, and theycan be aggressive, and they can steal
bases and they can double in thegap, and they can have in field
hits and bunts hits and do allthis other stuff and it can be a
really fun, tough, scratching andklawn fighting your way type of team to

(20:00):
watch. That can be really reallycool. That can be really really fun.
But as we've seen down the stretchlast year and in the month of
May this year, when they arecold, they need somebody who can hit
the ball over the fence. Theydesperately need somebody who can hit the ball

(20:25):
over the fence. Jamer Candelario wasthat last night when Ellie de la Cruz
goes up to the plate four timesand strikes out three of them. When
Tyler Stevenson is getting on base butnobody is there to drive him in.
When you have guys like Jake Frayleygoing over four, Jacob Herdibe's who looked

(20:51):
feeble in every single at bat thathe took, Jonathan India going hitless,
Will Benson just a smge over twohundred. When you have those guys in
your lineup and they are not puttingthe bat on the ball consistently, it
changes the entire It defeats the purposeof the way the team is built.

(21:14):
And when multiple people are going throughthat at the same time, it can
lead to slumps like we saw earlierthis year, you need somebody in that
lineup that can hit the ball overthe fence. When the Reds are going
well, they aren't hitting a bunchof homers. They're hitting line drives and
they're getting on base and they're keepingthe line moving. We know that,

(21:37):
but there is still a place inthe game for hitting home runs. You
can bail out a team that's builton base hits, that's built on singles,
that's built on stealing bases and gettingthe extra bag. When those guys
aren't getting on base and the runsare few and far between, you need

(21:59):
somebody that can get the ball overthe fence. Jamer Candelario has turned into
that over the last couple of weeks. He's having a fantastic month of June.
But when you look at home runsright now in Major League Baseball,
the Reds are seventeenth. They havesixty seven homers this year. The Orioles

(22:22):
and Yankees are over one hundred. The Phillies have seventy seven. That is
ten more homers, and the Philliesare six in Major League Baseball. Think
about what ten more home runs overthe last sixty games would have done for
this team, especially in that dreadedone run game stat where the Reds have

(22:45):
struggled mightily this season. They needsomebody who can put the ball over the
fence, and maybe that's what NickKrawl is looking for over the next five
to six weeks up until the tradedead, that you can interject into this
lineup. The idea of Noel vMarte coming back is great, and where

(23:07):
they put him and how that shufflesthings is really interesting. I think the
Reds have to be pleased with whatthey've seen from Spencer Steer at first base.
I saw Lance McAllister tweeting about this. I know Tommy and the Cowboy
have talked about this. Tony andI have talked about this. The more
Spencer Steer plays first base, themore comfortable you are with him there.

(23:29):
He just looks like a corner infielder. He looks comfortable. He's played that
position really, really well. JamberCandelario has not played it as well.
And noelvi Marte is going to playthird base and shortstop. He's gonna give
Ellie de la Cruz some chances toget out of the lineup, to get
a day off, to just bea DH whatever it might be. When

(23:49):
he plays shortstop, but Noelvie Marteis going to play third base most of
the time. That's gonna give youan opportunity then to keep Spencer ste Year
at first base and bump jam OrCandelario more than likely to the DH because
defensively, Candelario has just not beenvery good this year. He's been okay,

(24:10):
he's not been very good. Sothat creates probably a little more pop
in the lineup, and certainly froma right handed bat, and this team
has struggled against lefties all year long. And if Marte is strong and clean
and all these things that he's supposedto be, had another hit yesterday for
Louisville, then maybe he can providea little bit more pop. But Marte

(24:32):
has not come up as a guywho's going to hit you thirty home runs
a year. I don't know thatthere's a thirty home run hitter on this
team right now, and they reallyneed that. Candelario maybe Ellie da la
Cruz certainly has the power to doit, but he's struggling to make contact
and nobody else you really feel like, has been that guy. Jake Fraley

(24:56):
has like forty hits this year, and thirty of them are singing it's crazy,
and that was a guy who wassupposed to come up with some power.
They've had a few home runs WillBenson. When he makes contact,
he usually gets extra bases or homeruns. His percentage of hits being home
runs, I think at one pointwas one of the highest in Major League

(25:17):
Baseball. But Will Benson doesn't hedoesn't make contact very often. He's not
having a very good season. He'sone of those guys that's taken a step
back. This offense needs help, and when you look at where they are
at compared to the rest of theNational League, and primarily where they are
at compared to the National League Central. With a huge series coming up this

(25:41):
weekend against Milwaukee, and then sixof your next nine after that coming against
the Pittsburgh Pirates, it's a verybig stretch for this team. I don't
want Nick Crawl to sell the entirefarm system. I don't want him to
mortgage the future of this ball club. I had this conversation a lot last

(26:03):
year. However, I don't wanthim to sit on his hands and do
nothing, and I don't want himto be the last guy to the party.
I don't know exactly who's out therethat can come in and fix this
ball club right now. Certainly fixtheir offensive issues. Marte will help,
but you cannot bank on him beingthe guy to hit a lot of home

(26:27):
runs. You cannot bank on himto be the guy to save your offense.
You cannot bank on Matt McClain comingback. I would be shocked if
Matt McClain plays a single inning,a single pitch for this team this year,
and if he does, that won'tbe till August and all bets are

(26:48):
off by that point. You cannotoperate under the thinking that Noel Vie,
Marte and Matt McClain are going tocome back and provide instant impact offense to
this ball club. There have beena lot of guys De la Cruz,
Steer Benson that you expected to comein and have offensive impact and be similar

(27:10):
to what they were last year, and be better than what they were last
year, and to grow. Theyhaven't. Steer, yes, leads a
team in RBI and has had somebig moments, but he's somebody wake him
up from the coma he's in rightnow, hitting two thirty nine, striking
out more than he has lately. Now, had a good night last night,
one for four, didn't strike out, but his power numbers not as

(27:33):
great. They need somebody to hitthe ball over the fence. It can
change everything for this team, andthey can't bank on it being Marte or
mclin I don't want Nick Crawl tosell everything, but I want Nick Crawl
to be proactive and early in theprocess. Give yourself time to figure it

(27:56):
out with a new guy. Don'tbank on Matt McClain, don't bank on
Noelvie. Do something, get aleg up on the rest of your division,
because Pittsburgh's gonna try. Tony andI talked about this last week.
How good is Pittsburgh's starting pitching staff? Really really good. They're gonna go
try to get a bullpen arm ortwo to shure up the back end of
that bullpen. They're gonna go tryto get a consistent veteran for a young

(28:18):
team. Certainly on their offense,Saint Louis has been playing well lately.
That team is desperate for a winner, and although that fan base has,
you know, got some problems withtheir baseball operations department, they won't sit
on their hands. The Chicago Cubshave very deep pockets and a manager that

(28:38):
they spend a lot of money onto get here, and the Milwaukee Brewers
are traditionally pretty active at the deadline. Don't be the last one to make
a move. You go get theguy now and get ahead of everybody else.
At least that's the way I lookat it. UH thirty year phone

(29:00):
calls also a thought on Ellie DayLa Cruz when it comes to that entire
conversation that we just had, andwhen you look at the numbers against the
rest of the NL Central, itmakes you think, wait a minute,
are the Reds actually right there? Are they a lot better than we think,
despite the way that they played inthe month of May and despite where

(29:21):
they stand in the in the standings. I'm Wostin Elmore in for Tony Pike.
Sort of half of us are here. This is Sincy three to sixty,
brought to you by Skyline Chile onthe Home of the Bengals ESPN fifteen
thirty, introducing Tans and Baseball GettingESPN is fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio. Welcome

(29:48):
Back since three sixty visited by SkylineChile, ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Austin
Elmore. The phone lines are openfive, one, three, seven,
four, nine, fifteen thirty, about twenty minutes from right now, we
will hear from Bengals head coach ZachTaylor. And if you heard any of

(30:11):
the press conference earlier, you knowhow bad the audio is. But thankfully
our friend James Rapine was there andhe was nice enough to send along his
audio in which you can actually hearZach Taylor. And here's some of the
questions. So looking forward to that, Zach talked for a while. We'll
give you as much of that aswe can. At the top of our
one. At the top of ourtwo, Mike Petralia CLNS media on the

(30:34):
Reds and the Bengals. Uh comingup uh later on in the show.
In the meantime, let's go tothe phones. Let's go to Indiana where
Dave is standing by Dave, you'reon centy three to sixty. What's up,
hey, Addie. I don't knowif the Reds necessarily need a thirty
or forty home run guy a year. They've got guys on this team that
can hit. I'd better see sevenor eight guys hit fifteen to twenty home

(30:57):
runs more. One guy that youhave that you can be pitched that can
be pitched around last year to thisyear. You know, last year they
hit the long ball, They didpretty good last year. You know what's
the difference. I think it's theveteran leadership in the dugout. I think
that this team misses Joey Vado.I think he needs to come back and

(31:18):
be a player hitting coach. Maybethat's why you give him a little bit
of money and let him calm theseyoung guys down and get the young guys
focused on hitting again, just likehe did last year. I mean,
that's just my thoughts. What ifJoey Vado doesn't want to do that,
What if Joey vo wants to tryto play? I mean, you got
to take a run at it,though, Well, you could make him.
You could make him, you know, take a playbook page out of

(31:40):
the playbook in the eighty eight andfive. You know when Pete Rose did
it, you know, put himat first base once a week. When's
the last time there was a playermanager in Major League Baseball? Probably Pete
Rose. And when's the last timeit was like a forty two year old
guy. Probably not Pete Rose.Right, you know, do something.
I mean, you know that thisteam's got it in them, they just

(32:01):
need somebody to get it out ofthem. I think that they can have
five or six guys that can hittwenty home runs. You know, they're
just they're just not doing for somereason. And what is the difference between
last year and this year? Ican't put my finger on it. All
right, Well, I do appreciatethinking outside the box. I think everybody
loves Joey ootto Dave, thank youfor the phone call. Votto is trying

(32:23):
to rehab from a ankle injury thathe suffered. Let's say, you know,
Dave, Let's let's think about thatworld for a minute. Joey Votto
comes back as a player coach, half player, half hitting coach. Uh
number one worth a roster spot. The way this team organizes itself and the

(32:45):
way that this team philosophizes the waythat they do things, I don't even
know if that's a word. Mighthave made it up, h their philosophy.
Does that warrant that somebody takes upa roster spot that plays once a
week? No? Probably not.Joey Vado is a great guy. Joey
Voto's great at hitting. Is hea good coach? Has he ever coached.

(33:07):
He's not a very good communicator,at least from the public sense that
we've seen. He struggles with hiswords quite a bit, and that might
be different when he's private in coachingand talking with friends. Sure, I
don't look at Joy Vado as somebodywho will step right in and be an
excellent coach, but you would haveto take a roster spot to do that.

(33:30):
I don't know who you replace rightnow, especially when Marte comes back.
Who do you then take out.I get that people love joy Vado.
I get that Joey Vado has forgottenmore hitting than any of us know.
The idea of him coming back asa forty whatever he is year old

(33:50):
half player, half hitting coach isso far removed from reality. I can't
really begin to explain it. Let'sgo to Dayton where Scott is. Hi,
Scott, Hey, how you doingAudi? Not too bad? What's
up? Good? So the onething I did want to point out,

(34:14):
did you see the stats on thebullpen? I know that that's been a
source of concern for you. Haveyou seen the recent status? Yes,
I know that they've they've they haveonly what three blown saves all season?
They haven't blown to save in liketwenty seven some games. They're looking much
better, yes, right, right, And they're also I don't know,

(34:36):
twenty nine and one when having thelead after the seventh inning. Yeah,
they've been solid. They have beenso I guess my question when you're looking
at players that you want to bringin, who who are you sitting down?
Yeah? I mean I think rightnow, let's say, let's say,

(35:00):
you know, they traded for somebodytoday, Blake Dunn or Jacob Heurtaby's
probably gone if they if they doit, If they do that, three
weeks from now, when Marte isback, still probably one of those two
guys, they'll both probably be gone. Right, But they're not playing regularly.

(35:20):
I mean one or the other isplaying regularly. But I just don't
know. You know, Lewis Roberthas been mentioned into his team a bunch
of times. Have you taken alook at his stats? Right, That's
That's what I'm saying, like, you might have to go after somebody who,
batting average wise, is not verygood, but at least has the

(35:45):
ability to hit home runs. AndI understand Robert was hurt for a good
portion of the time to start thisyear. He's got six home runs and
fifty six at bats. That's adecent home run percentage. Doesn't hit the
ball consistently as a batting average,is not on base very much much.
But having that threat, I thinkis you want somebody a better hitter than
that all around, but that threat, I think is something they're still missing.

(36:08):
Yeah, okay, I guess Iget it. But don't you think
that Stuart's fair Child, or evenBlake Dunn for that matter, gives you
more with you know how often theyget on base and their speed, and
you know they give you more thingsthan just home runs. I don't know

(36:30):
that they that this team needs somebodyto hit the ball out of the park.
I think they have a lot ofcapable people to do it. They're
just not doing it right now.Well that's that's my point, though,
Scott. They aren't doing it.And if they can't push away, push
across runs the way that they weredesigned to, you have to look somewhere
else and find somebody that can atthe very least hit the ball out of

(36:51):
the ballpark and have that threat inyour lineup because you don't really have it
right now. Well, I thinkthat's fair point. I just don't know
where this person is going to play, it'll be an outfielder. An outfielder
is basically your only option because onceMarte comes back, he's gonna be in

(37:12):
the infield. Candelario will go toDH, Steer will play first base.
It's either gonna be a first basementor an outfielder, because you might move
Steer to the outfield or he'll playfirst base or whatever it might be.
But it's basically got to be that. Yeah, all right, well we'll
see what happens. Yeah we will. Scott, thank you for the phone
call. I appreciate it. Yeah, it's it's listen. It's it's not
that. It's not like, youknow, Nick Kral can go up there

(37:36):
and say, aberka dabra and boom, I got a three hundred hitting,
thirty home run guy that we're goingto stick into this lineup. It's not
that easy. I think the mindsetis and overall is you want somebody that
is going to help you this yearand next year. I don't think the
Reds are in business for a rentalplayer. Think back to the Trevor Bauer

(37:58):
deal in twenty nineteen. They weregood, they needed to be better.
They ultimately weren't, but they gotTrevor Bauer in twenty nineteen and had a
year remaining. In twenty twenty endsup winning the cy young they go to
the playoffs. Obviously a crazy COVIDyear, but what that season could have
been in a full year is reallysomething to think about. I think that's

(38:20):
kind of the mentality that they haveright now. Somebody maybe a little bit
older, somebody right handed, somebodywith power, somebody that we have some
control over for the next couple ofyears. That would be my guess.
I don't know exactly who all thosepeople are. It's not my job to
know all of them. That's NickCarl's job know all of them. But
that's just the way I look atit. One more phone called Mike in

(38:45):
LA. What's up? Mike,Hey, dude, I can empathize with
you because you know, in yourage group, the regis below your whole
life and a part with you i'djust tested off and frustrated to us.
Oh, I'm serious, man, because you know you take it seriously through
a grill. I don't know aboutserious, but it's enjoyment. It's just

(39:07):
not as much fun with a teamthat's well five hundred all the time.
I don't really know that I'm pissedoff, Like I just am kind of
at the end of the line, where like they don't have any grace,
they don't get the benefit of thedoubt, and I would like to see
them do something right for once.Yeah, I know, and and I'm
with you. You know, ifNick carlon't know what to do, I

(39:28):
sure as hell don't know what todo or how to go about doing it.
That's probably a complex problem. Likeyou're saying you don't want to give
up some of your young studs, but by god, you're going to have
to give up something, you know. You know, Well, one thing
for sure, Dallas should just stayhome, and they will be staying home
because Boston will end that day tomorrow. We know that that was Pete Petette.

(39:52):
I mean, it's just clear he'sthe better team, whether they got
Porzingis or not. It's kind offrustrating, you know, because you get
up for a little excitement and youget zero, right, Yeah, it's
very deflating. The uh uh Austinthought on it. My memory is so
bad, Mike. If you ifyou if you had tickets to the Celtics,

(40:13):
if you had NBA Finals Game fivetickets in Boston and you were a
Celtics fan, would you rather themlose Game four and come back to Boston
and you get a chance to seehim win it in person, or would
you rather them win it in asweep on the road and you don't get
to go to the game. I'dprobably let me just go ahead and just

(40:34):
go ahead and give that game upand come on home ocause you know you're
gonna beat them. Whenever you wantto beat them, you're gonna beat them.
I mean, it's so obvious. It's not even close, right,
really, like watching them play acollege team almost, And uh, that's
what's so frustrating about it. Ithink Minnesota might have been a better,
better flow, but who knows. They're They're just that good Boston right now,
They're just that good. Yeah.Did you say that some of the

(40:57):
Cleveland fans were upset about the lineup last night? Yeah? I saw
I saw some people say that, you know, it was going to be
a big they were going to needa big night from Biby or however you
say that guy's name, And wasn'ta big fan of the lineup that they
put out. For us from Stephenvote last night and the fact that he
there's a couple of pinch hitting decisionsthey didn't like. I was just kind
of following along. Yeah, no, that's good because you're getting knowledge that

(41:21):
you don't have some fans that fallon them. And I agree with you.
I tried to do that every opportunityone a different ballpark. But maybe
last night that guy's looking saying, look, you know, the Reds are
low five hundred and we got togive some of our guys the rest and
let's just maybe blow this game offand you don't want to lose. But
you know, I heard something interestingthe other day that Cleveland at one point

(41:43):
he had a choice between Keith andBenson and Stephen Kwan, and at this
point it looks like they made theright Yeah, I would say they would
Mike come up against the clock.Thank you for the phone call. I
saw the crazy stat that Stephen Kwanwhen he swings the bat and makes contact
ninety four percent of the time. That is absolutely absurd. We will wrap

(42:09):
things up on hour number one whenwe come back. You're listening to Cincy

over to Bengals Talk after this. You'll hear from Bengals head coach Zach Taylor.

(43:36):
He met with the media today asthe Bengals finished up mandatory mini camp.
Joe Burrow did not practice today.Jamar Chase did not practice today.
You'll hear Zach address both of those. You'll also hear him address the news
of the day, which is thatTed Carris signed a contract extension that keeps
him a Bengal through twenty twenty five. It's about six point six million added

(43:58):
on total of two years, aboutthirteen million dollars ish right around those numbers
for Ted Carris to be here. The entire Bengals offensive line right now signed
through twenty twenty five, So moreon that coming up in just a little

ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.Hi, Hello, welcome in our number

(44:43):
two Cincy three sixty, ESPN fifteenthirty. I am Austin Elmore, with
you until three o'clock today, withyou for the next couple of weeks,
as Tony Pike is living with her. I had completely lost my train and
by Tony Pike has got a newkid. Welcome to new child into the

(45:05):
family, and Tony is taking careof the fam and being with them.
And we'll see him in a coupleof weeks. If they are wondering where
he's at, that's where he's at. Tony Underscore Pike fifteen posts some cute
pictures of his kid, Walker, that has joined the world, and he's
joined a world in which the Bengalsare Sincinnati are Super Bowl contenders, and

(45:27):
they're Head coach Zach Taylor spoke earliertoday as the Bengals wrapped up mandatory mini
camp these three days. Jamar Chasewas there for all of it. He
was involved in all of it,but he did not officially practice in any
of it. Joe Burrow did notpractice earlier today as well. So none
of that. I don't think anyof that is a surprise. I don't

(45:50):
think any of that is something tobe worried about. But for the last
time until training camp, which hasnot beneficially announced what the training camp schedule
is, but we know it'll beprobably five or six weeks from now,
this will be the last time wehear from Zach Taylor. The other day
was the last time we heard fromfrom Joe Burrow. So without further ado,
let's hear from the Bengals head coachearlier today down at pay Court Stadium.

(46:16):
It was yeah, I you know, we just met as a staff,
and part of my message when theydid a great job preparing themselves to
get ready for these guys and gettingthe most out of this process we've had
the last couple of weeks. Ithought the players bought in completely, got
done everything that we needed to getdone, continue to improve, and now

(46:37):
just keep that momentum going on theirown these next five weeks and so that
when we come back to training camp, we're not restarting or setting back.
We can keep the momentum going thatwe've had and have a great training camp
when there's all the guys about whatthey do and what they don't do and
get fortunate to the NADE camp orthe count there was lacking, you know,
Andy trys of have an approach itto get you to do a guy

(46:58):
and guys have to be the question. Yeah, every situation is unique,
Every situation is particular to a player. And so again it's it's there's not
an overall this is a process. It's it's take each situation as they come
at us. The website, hewas possibly outline. Yeah, it was

(47:21):
good to get him back in here. He's in great shape. He had
his process, he went through withJoey Bose. Again, when when someone's
not been here, you don't wantto rush him into things. And but
he clearly has has done a greatjob this offseason. Really happy to get
him back in the building. Hewas in all the meetings, did all
the all the walkthroughs and all thatstuff, and then did a great job

(47:42):
mentoring some of the other players ashe was out there doing practice. So
I thought we got what we neededout of him, and was appreciable of
him. Of even though it ismandatory, I mean, you see,
it's not you know, there's stillguys that aren't always always there. And
he showed up and and uh diddid everything that we talked about him doing,
having again rest and rest for most. I hate to speak for him,

(48:05):
but he certainly looks very comfortable playingout there at the corner. And
I think Chuck's done a really goodjob of of getting him ready and and
helping him compete. And so Ithink that's a really good room right now
from a competition standpoint, and Dakcertainly has continue to make improvements over the
course of the spring and and puthimself in a position that we feel really
good about have had that on thebag line of Bat and Rock. You

(48:30):
guys, is that one more timehad that? Uh Ted's a big part
of what we do, you know, as a captain, and he's always
led the right way and and soagain happy that we were able to get
that done and and keep the trendmoving up front. That's the biggest part

(48:52):
of this. An loves football, loves football, and so you you love
a center that's obsessed with the process, takes a lot of pride in the
position, not just being a footballplayer, not just being an offensive lineman,

(49:13):
but being a center and there's alot that goes into that and Ted.
Ted takes on all that, takescomplete ownership of it. Does a
great job with the communication, startingthe communication up front, the communication with
Joe, the communication with us ascoaches, and then as a leader,
you know, as a as avoted captain, the communication as a team.
He's a guy you can trust. And so again he's about all the

(49:35):
right things. And still it's gotgood years in front of him. Around
him, a lot you see growand takes the position, you know,
become even more of a force.I you know, I think as you're
with a new team, you becomemore comfortable, certainly as time goes.
But his reputation is what it isnow. You know, this has always

(50:00):
been what we've heard about Ted,and that's what we've seen firsthand. And
so it's it's we're not surprised bythat. And and certainly I think as
the months go by that he's beenour team, he's probably more comfortable.
But I wouldn't say that I evernoticed Ted was uncomfortable on our team.

(50:23):
Again, they have to keep themomentum that they've already established. I'm really
excited for this locker room to finishup, uh and UH. Anyway,
they got to continue the momentum becauseagain, the guys have put in great
work. We've made great strides atevery position, to every unit, and

(50:45):
conveying to younger players that haven't experiencedthis time period as much where you're on
your own, that you know youcan't fall off. You can't. Now
that you're on your own, yougot to be a pro about it and
and be ready to come in andcompete because the attempts has been unbelievable.
It's been seventy five degrees, seventyseven degrees. We come back, it's

(51:05):
probably gonna be ninety degrees. Thepractices are twice as long, twice as
hard. You got pads on,it's a lot more intense, there's a
lot more urgency. And so justdoing everything you can to communicate that that
things will change when you come back, and making sure that they put themselves
in the best position possible to beable to compete. How you finish up,

(51:27):
you look for the yes the guys, well, I think just just
his path. You know, he'searned every opportunity and his time as a
as a as a young hockey playergrowing up in Canada, and his path
you know, through through professional hockeyand his path to being a head coach.
You know, it's just he's gotthere's a lot of wisdom with with

(51:50):
the things of the message that hehad and could right to our guys.
He's a former player, you know, and has played professionally and now coaches
professionally. So I think that heunderstands what our guys go through. And
he's a big football fan as well. And so, which is what you
notice about a lot of pro athletesin different sports, you know, is
is it's almost like at times footballseems like their first love. They just

(52:10):
they just whatever reason gravitated to theprofession that they're in. But everybody at
heart always feels like a football player. So that's fun to get around those
people. And and I thought hedid a great job talking to our team.
That that can be an uncomfortable setting. I don't care who you are
walking into a room with, youknow, eighty five plus guys, and
and the setting can be different sometimes. And and uh, I thought he

(52:31):
knocked out of the park and dida great job. Yeah, you know,
it's as you saw a lot ofour younger guys participated in the later
parts of practice and so uh,to get his work in on on Tuesday
and Wednesday and then take today offwas was the best plan to recovery proscover.

(52:52):
I've been happy. You know,he's he's better answering that than me
because he knows how his body feels. But I've I've been really excited about
what I've seen from him. Whatyou were saying about the well, I
you know, I'm not into asmuch as other people maybe launching the ball

(53:13):
down the field and how hard itis. It's just his timing and and
getting through progressions. It's so impressivethat that's really what separates him, in
one way from from a lot ofpeople in this league. And that continues
to show up, you know, just even even as we do limited work
here in the off season. Justgetting through a progression and throwing with accuracy

(53:35):
to a guy who's fourth or fifthin the progression on time is really remarkable.
And it's something that he's he worksreally hard at. But it looks
effortless as you sit there and watchit from behind. But but it's certainly
something he takes a lot of pridein playing for September to be in September

(53:55):
not necessarily mean you always see ahigh level of urgency from him, and
that that's all I can really measureplayers on, you know, so what
what happens internally with them is upto them and what they go through.
And certainly guys always have have theirplan of how their body is going to
be best at the right time andand all that. But I've just seen

(54:15):
a high level of urgency from him, and I think our players and our
coaches feel that as well. Andand in a lot of ways, you
got to match that because he drives, you know, he drives his whole
thing, and so I think thatwas really that was a positive thing.
See that brown persons that as likemy popping. I think my views on

(54:42):
size have really been transformed over thelast two months. There's large people now
that I view as small that it'sjust hard to wrap your head around.
I guess that's the best way forme to put it. Getting back why

(55:06):
it's I mean that the calendar hasbeen so funky over the last four years,
to be truthful with you, COVIDplayed a large part in that obviously,
and and then just the the lateruns into February two years in a
row affected that this year, wedidn't have that, and so it just
made more sense to give the playerstheir time leading up to April and into

(55:30):
early May, and just getting alittle more work done than we've done in
the past. It's just it's justa product of one our season ended,
and and I the work that Ithought would be necessary to get some of
the new players integrated and some ofthe young players integrated because we are a
younger team now, you know, that's just the way it is. And
and and so you got a lotof young guys that need that work.

(55:51):
I think there's a lot of them. You know, I won't go through
them all by name, but there'sa lot of guys, a lot of
year two guys that you see takingthat next step, you know, their
rookie years behind them. And andso they're they're certainly comfort level from knowing
what the full calendar year looks andfeels like, and what the expectations are
and how they need to. Theircomfort level in the schemes is a big
part, you know, where you'renot just doing what the paper tells you

(56:14):
to do in front of you onthe install sheet, you're actually playing up
to your time speed on both sidesof the ball, because it's second nature
on what the call means to you, and you're not just sitting there trying
to process the call and do itthe way the coach says. Now you
get a chance to put your ownflavor into it a little bit. And
so you've seen that with a lotof our guys. Now, I think

(56:45):
what what as our as our rosterevolves on offense, it allows us flexibility
to do a lot of different thingswith a lot of different guys, And
so I think that's where again it'sit's hard to say that, uh,
every player can get better, letme start with that, but he's played
an extremely high level and given useverything we'd hoped he would ever give us.

(57:05):
And so now it just comes withthe flexibility of the personnel we have
an offense. It changes from yearto year, and this year will be
a change, and so that canthat can change his role, shift his
role in some ways. In someways it'll be the same as it has
been. So you know, heand I have had god conversations about that
and and look forward to seeing whatthe season brings. That way, ye

(57:27):
Candy, to discuss how you mightbe able to dress up you know,
offense, because he anticipates getting moreand more a variety of events. What's
this year? How excited are youtraining him to see all those pieces?
It'll be interesting, you know. It's it's once you put the pads on

(57:47):
and you're eleven on eleven and youknow, we certainly have our vision of
how things will go offensively. Uh, but but there's flexibility for to evolve
as training camp goes, because wedo have new bodies at different positions.
And we got a new guy inthe running back room, new guy in
the tight end room, new guysin the offensive line room, new guys

(58:09):
in the receiver's room. So tosay this is what it's definitely going to
look like on August twenty fifth,We're not going to put ourselves in that
box. You know. We're gonnaallow it to be flexible as we practice
and things can shift as we goand we're very open to that and we're
going to be flexible that way,and I'm excited to see guys step up.

(58:30):
There's still rooms for roles to evolveand grow and others may shrink.
And so that's just the beauty ofhaving good depth. Because I think that
we've got good depth and there's alot of competition and so we'll just see
how training camp goes, and I'mexcited to watch that process unfold. That
is Bengals head coach Zach Taylor abouttwelve good minutes worth and only about half

(58:52):
of what he had to say,And that last little bit there I wanted
to get in because Zach, tome, seems like a guy who is
much more relaxed. And maybe it'sthat he had a couple of extra months
of time off and he's had achance to build an offseason, you know,

(59:13):
and he's got all these young guysand maybe that's kind of given him
some new energy or whatever it mightbe. And who knows, but Zach
seems to feed to seem very calmto me, very relaxed, and very
confident, especially when he talks aboutthe offense and him kind of saying that

(59:34):
at the end about all the differentplaces that the offense can go and all
the different places that different guys canplay. Talked about this with Joe Danaman
yesterday that Mike Issicki has been onthe outside and we know t Higgins is
going to be on the outside.Burton and Chase can both play on the
outside. What that does for anoffense. And then you have a Chase
Brown and you have a Zach Mossthat you bring into play, and you

(59:59):
drafted a tight end that people arepretty high on, and your offensive line
has got another year together, andyou have a new guy calling the shots
on offense, being Dan Pitcher. It can kind of inject some life into
you. It can get you excited, and there's no you know, concern
in his voice. There's the andI understand it's June thirteenth, don't read

(01:00:20):
too much into it. But alsoI just feel like there is a confidence
coming from anybody on the offensive sideof the ball about where this team can
go. And I thought Zach waswas open there that, you know,
we don't know exactly what it's goingto look like yet, and that is
part of the process that you canreally fall in love with. And I

(01:00:40):
think also part of it Zach doesn'tentirely know because he's taken a bit of
a step back. We talked aboutthat with Joe Daniman yesterday and we'll talk
about it again after talkbacks, Butyou know, I think that's sort of
flexibility and what Joe said earlier thisweek about they are the ones that's going
to dictate what the defense does insteadof the defense dictating to them. That

(01:01:04):
gets me more excited about this Bengalsoffense than I have been since who knows
ten years ago when they were amongthe best offenses in the NFL. That
gets me really excited and also takesa little bit of the pressure off of
Joe Burrow, at least the waythat I see it. So we can
talk about that. Phone lines willbe open after talkbacks five one, three,

(01:01:24):
seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. Tweet at me as well at
audielmore Au t y E L MO R E your talkbacks, and by
the way, thank you again toour friend James Rapine for getting some usable
audio for us since the Bengals can'tseem to figure out how to do the
most basic stuff down there. Itdrives everybody insane, myself included. Thank

(01:01:46):
you James for being able to passthat along to us and give us the
chance to listen to Zach Taylor. All right, we'll take a break.

Austin Elmore and it's time for everybody'sfavorite segment, talkbacks. Nice of Tony
to invite some of us into thedelivery room the other day to witness the
miracle of childbirth. It was intense. I thought slick Willie was gonna pass
out. Now, John Michael,he was great. He is just Meredith

(01:03:00):
with her breathing and when it wasgo time, he was yelling poosh,
poosh. Don't he even let loudtalkback guy cut the cord. That's a
heck of a visual. So wehave some housekeeping to do, all right.
Yesterday, Drew and Mason was soupset with me that he actually cussed

(01:03:25):
on air. Everyone has a rolewhen they call in a talkbacks. My
role for the last two three yearshave been to make Tony groan when he
hears my name and have Austin throwme under the bus. So, yeah,
I'm not funny, but that's myrole, and that's the character I
play. I guess on talkbacks.Yeah, Jim, it's a good way

(01:03:46):
to look at it. I dowant to clarify Drew did not curse on
there on the air, he saidstick. It sounded like something else,
but he did say stick, andI have the thing here on our app
to prove it. Yeah, Jim, I think sometimes it's hard for me
to tell whether or not you're serious, and sometimes that means we've grown and

(01:04:08):
we throw you under the bus.But you know, I appreciate that.
Happy victory Thursday. I'm on withthan Ken here, very happy that the
Red Legs got the split against theGuardians. Now we can get back to
another seven game winning streak. Man, I said in mas and six looking
like Celtics and four. Now oftenI want to say, you're doing a
fine job, sir. Don't letanybody tell you different. And how do

(01:04:30):
I notice? Because you're looking fora way to get better. Those who
don't become stale and boring have agreat day. Everybody always remember hone,
Kevin, thank you so much.Man, Really do appreciate that. I
don't want to be stale and boring. I know that for sure. Hey,
Austin, it's talkback matters guy.I'm very sorry I didn't get to
calling yesterday because well, I've justgotten busy. But unfortunately I heard about

(01:04:57):
the loss of your grandmall I'm veryvery sorry to he that. You're a
great dude, and I'm sorry foryour loss as far as the Reds are
concerned. Listen, the Reds gotto have a veteran, and not any
of the so called veterans that's ontheir team. They need a veteran,
they need a power hitter. Yourthoughts. You've said the same thing.

(01:05:17):
First of all, thank you,You've said the same thing several times.
I don't know what else you wantme to say. Yeah, I don't
necessarily disagree with you that they needa veteran and that they need a power
hitter. I just did a wholesegment on how they need a power hitter.
I don't know how many veterans areout there that they can just pluck.

(01:05:40):
And I don't know how much veteransreally going to help them this year,
to be completely honest with you,so but thank you. Hello,
this is former President Ronald Reagan andwill it looks like it's going to have
to be the Man's and seven thisyear. Oh and Audie, I remember

(01:06:01):
how you said you always come upwith nicknames for everyone. Yes, and
may I humbly recommend that you callTony and Merediths new baby wild Man after
your favorite local sports radio personality, wild Man Walker. That's gonna be a
hard pass, mister President. Butthank you bat Day back in the day
when it was really really bad dayand they handed you back on the way

(01:06:24):
in. That was my little leaguebat every year for year after year.
Uh. Obviously they can't do thatnow. Unfortunately, I have had I've
heard stories about bat Day. That'sa good one. One of the great
stadium giveaways of all time was itwasn't there a kid glove thing that they
did. To correct me if I'mwrong on that, Hey often marking from

(01:06:45):
the grove. What Marcus? Thebest stadium giveaway that I had now?
For me, I've only been toone stadium and that's the Reds. That
the best one that I've gotten wasthe little radio and that they gave on
Marty's final home game. I stillhave it today. But the best promotion
was they had a rope around theoutfield and the Reds came out of the

(01:07:09):
dugout and you could get a picturewith him around the ballpark. That's cool,
I do. Yeah, the promotionsof I remember being able to run
the bases when I was a littlekid. That was awesome. I think
that's cool. I wish they wouldstill do that, but yeah, you
kind of stole my thunder there,Marcus. The radio. Maybe I can
tell the story from Marty's Last game. The radio that they gave gave away

(01:07:33):
that day. I use it everysingle day. I was just actually talking
to Tommy Thraw about that the otherday and he was like, no kidding,
because I listened to every game.I almost never watch. I will
watch the condensed game like the nextday, but it's difficult for me to
watch, and many of you feelmy pain in that it's impossible to watch

(01:07:55):
in a like an easy way,at an affordable way. So I listened
to every game. I watched theCondens game on the MLB app the next
day most of the time, andI used that little radio that they gave
away at Marty's Last game every time. Awestin. Have you heard these audible
commercials that y'all run on the IRradio app. They're a bit out of

(01:08:16):
pocket, man. I don't evenneed to try and stay Men's Health center
whatever center anymore. I mean,I just listened to these audible commercials that
get me going. Yeah, no, haven't heard those. I'm glad that
it's working for you. Also. That was Andy ak Knight or whatever his
name is. He said that, you know, maybe we should have Rick

(01:08:38):
Boring on now that Tony's gone.We had Rick boring on last week.
Austin, it's Thursday. Come on, Timmy Tucus doesn't get Tony in all
his walker talk. T Pen needsto get himself a fifty four and zero
turn rider. Make his life alittle easier. Two out, two cuts,
Best of luck tonight. I don'tknow what time blades go down,

(01:08:59):
but best lucky. You got yourtwo cut shirt right here. You hear
this. You can't really hear it, but I got the I got the
shirt, Old Timmy, two cuts? What up, Audie? What's from
the U? Hey? Thank godfor Jamers night. Dude was a wrecking
ball on those commanders or guardians, indians, whatever you call them these days.

(01:09:20):
Commanders anyway, bring on the Brewers. The stash survived to the weekend.
Go red legs, go big blue. All right, Craiger, best
of luck to you. I usedto work with a guy named Craig,
and I called him Craiger, kindof going back to that previous thing.
He hated that almost got punched inthe face for calling him craiger once.

(01:09:41):
Hey, Austin got here. I'lltake a split with the Guardians anytime period.
And why is have we only playedthem two games at a time?
Why don't we have three game setsor four game sets with the Guardians them
being a Ohio Cup rival and interstaterival. Uh, we only play them

(01:10:01):
four times? Or we the Redsonly play them four times in a season.
Uh, so they split it uptwo and two, so it's not
like three games in one in allfour at a time because they because it's
two in Cincinnati, two in Clevelandbasically, so they've split it up that
way. Hey, what's up withall the squatty potty commercials? No poop?

(01:10:21):
Just fine? Wasn't that a productpresented on Chark Tank about twenty years
ago? Well, you know, not every advertisement is you know, aimed
directly at you. Maybe there areothers that don't. Hey, allad these
what the Reds need to do?They need to bring back Joey Vado Now

(01:10:42):
hear me out made to bringing backas a player manager, class hitting instructor,
right class first base coat, Uhhuh, class bar vendor, class
build security guard, right to behaving all these playball run all down and
never field. Thank you appreciate that. I keep hearing people say that what

(01:11:04):
Milwaukee burd is doing isn't sustainable. What the Reds are doing isn't sustainable.
You can't keep a lying on Candelarioto keep hitting home runs like he's Aaron
Judge. It ain't who he is. And they definitely do need a badge
like that because none of the restof the team is hitting. And also,
can we stop with the Joey Badocoming back as a player hitting coach

(01:11:25):
like that that this ain't in nineteenseventies. That ain't happening, Like,
come on, man, just becausehe could hit doesn't mean he can teach
it for the first time maybe ever. You and I agree on everything.
Hattie House in it you buddy thetuck back cam. Come on now and
take your lave to my press conferencewith Harriet Carey about the upcoming election.

(01:11:51):
Yeah, ass said that gays Neckqualified to run. He's shitting ran and
we are the ticket you should votedown. Yeah, that guy's not very
good either. I don't know howyou'd vote for him. Thank you.
Hi, This is Kate from Montgomerybringing you Today's Bengals press conference. Let's

(01:12:14):
get started. Oh yeah, greatquestion. Well, we're going to use
some good communication until we get thatall sorted out. We'll know more soon
here. Thanks. Yeah, well, we're definitely seeing progress in that.
We've got high right right, Yeah, getting them out on the field.
Thanks. Oh, we'll have toget back to you on that one.

(01:12:34):
Thanks. Oh, Kate, that'sgood. You made me laugh. The
Bengals have a month to figure itout. They have a month to figure
it out or else I'm going tobe pretty angry with them. And maybe
these reds hitters just aren't that good. We keep basing what we saw off
last year in that twelve game stretchwhere they won twelve games in a row,

(01:12:55):
saying oh, they're really good becausewe saw them do it then,
like such a small sample size.Maybe they're really not that good of an
offensive team and they do need abat. They probably need a couple bats.
I'm not basing my opinions on theseguys based off of the twelve game
win streak. I'm basing my opinionsoff what they did in the entirety of

(01:13:17):
twenty twenty three. Spencer Steer hittwo seventy one twenty three homers, was
on base three point fifty in onehundred and fifty six games last year.
TJ. Friedel was two seventy nineon base three point fifty eighteen home runs
in one hundred and thirty eight gameslast year. Jonathan India was on base
at a three thirty clip and hitseventeen home runs in one hundred and nineteen

(01:13:40):
games last year and hit over twoforty h Jake Fraley hit two fifty six
with fifteen homers in a three thirtyon base percentage in one hundred and eleven
games. I mean, that's whatI'm looking at. Tyler Stevenson two forty
three, one hundred and thirteen hitslast year in one hundred and forty two
games, on base percentage of threehundred. Will Benson two seventy five last

(01:14:02):
year in one hundred and eight games, hit eleven home runs, was on
base three sixty five, a higheron base percentage than Steer and Friedel in
India and McLain and Frehley and justabout anybody else on the team. Not
just a twelve game stretch, itwas the majority of last season where these
guys were playing significant time and performingbetter. It's not just about the twelve

(01:14:26):
game win streak. We saw whatthey could be at their best during those
twelve games, but as a whole, this is who they were, and
it's hard to look at them throughsixty whatever games now and say they're going
to get back to that gentlemen friendlyneighborhood. But pizza dude has found the
record. But let's go pezzay.Obviously, congratulations Austin. I'll keep it

(01:14:49):
short. It goes out to you. Thank you, better me one take
a jump. Come on, pizzaguy. Yeah, I got an order
for Jay. Yes there No,that is the whole order. Yeah,
I don't understand what your previous pizzanews have to do with it. I
get a bigger car, less gasmilege harder to park, I get it.
But I promise you that is thewhole order, Jay, That's all

(01:15:10):
of it. That's the whole order. Is that a joke that I don't
get? I used to deliver pizzas? What's a body Happy Thursday? I'm
getting so tired of hearing that theReds need a veteran, The Reds need
to bring Joey Votto back. TheReds have a veteran. His name's David
Bell. He's their manager, FreddieBinavitez. He's a older guy. Yea

(01:15:32):
veteran. Yeah. The pitching coach, he's an older guy. He's the
veteran. They don't need a veteranin the locker room. Okay, let's
get over that. These young guyscan ball out without a veteran over their
shoulders. Yeah. I also thinkTyler Stevenson's a veteran. I think Brent
Souter is a veteran. I thinkFrankie Muntoss is a veteran. I think

(01:15:54):
Jamber Candelario is a veteran. Ithink you know those guys, Luke Mayley
is a veteran. I mean,I think those guys do exist in the
locker room. Yo, Austin andBond ain't easy, No, it's not
nice. Giveaways the Bronson Arroyo blondehair Fox Sports. That's a good one,
the Bronson Arroyo blonde hair hat.I do remember that. I seem

(01:16:15):
to remember the Cleveland Cavaliers gave awayAnderson veraisial wig headband thing for a while
too. That was popular. AustinGeorge in the valley. Let's go George,
You want to watch the game forfree, you can download a browser
on your firestick and watch it atthe TV app dot t O Yeah,

(01:16:35):
the TV app. Yeah, yeah, I do know how to do that.
It's just not always as convenient forme to do it that way,
but I do know of the waysto do that. Thank you, Luke
Lima. The best I've ever seenis that my dad still has two bats,
Davey Concepcion and Johnny Bench he gotwhen he was a kid. But

(01:17:00):
my two favorites I've got were theRyan Friedel dirty shirt giveaway, Yes,
still got that somewhere, and theBronson arroyo that had the hair coming out
of the back of the hat.Yep, yep. The Bronson Arroyo one
is definitely a popular one. Iknow. I have a Bronson bobblehead with
him sticking his leg up in theair on his wind up. That was
one of my favorites. The KenGriffy Junior camouflage jersey was a big one

(01:17:26):
when I remember when I was younger. I think they're doing a steer jersey
coming up shortly as well. Soyeah, some of the favorite favorite Reds
giveaways of all time. There yougo. Mine is definitely the radio.
Maybe I can tell that story shortlywhen we get back. We got phone
lines open as well. Five one, three, seven, four nine,

fastest way to save money on gasjust by buying your favorite drinks that you
typically buy every day this summer.Every time you buy two Coke, Mountain,
Dew, Monster, or Red Bullproducts, you can save ten cents

(01:18:39):
each, ten cents off each gallonof gas, ten cents off each gallon
of gas, and if you buythree, you save twenty cents a gallon.
Those saving stack so you can lowerthe price you pay for gas by
one, two, even three dollarsa gallon. The more drinks you buy,
the more you save why go anywhereelse? But you there, you

(01:19:00):
go looking forward to that had asugar free red Bull from UDF earlier today,
saving on gas. That's how youdo it. Let's go back to
the phones where Nick is standing byin Miami's Burg. What's up, Nick?
Hey, what's up buddy? Nota whole lot, man. Hey,
I've got two comments here real quick. First of all, the stadium

(01:19:24):
was absolutely electric last night. Itook my three year old son down and
we just we had a blast.I am very much a glass is half
hole guy, but I do havetwo Just got a you know, sort
of negative takeaways from last night.First of all, I really feel I
really feel like MLB is missing anopportunity by not having the Reds Guardians as

(01:19:48):
a three game set over the weekend. You know, they've been doing this.
You had a caller earlier allude tothis, been doing the two games,
you know, in each each cityfor the last couple of seasons.
I think back to uh I thinkit was twenty eleven and when the Reds
and back then the Indians got togetherin Cincinnati and that was one of the

(01:20:12):
most profitable weekends in Great American ballparkhistory up to that point, I think
MLB is really just missing out bynot having, you know, a weekend
series in each city. So manypeople turned out to the Ohio Cup last
night, and I realized it wasEllie Daley Bruz bable that night. But
I haven't seen a crowd like thatdown there, you know, outside of

(01:20:34):
Opening Day and I don't know howlong. I mean, it was truly
electric. And then my other commenttoo was just you know, last night,
Safer Candelario, you know, wentin the game. Basically for them,
The Guardians pitching is just spot onwith what we saw the last two

(01:20:54):
games, coupled with the good playoffscaliber pitching that they saw on May.
I'm really just concerned with, youknow, the Reds offense and their ability
to generate runs or even just geton base versus playoff caliber pitching. And
I think we saw that last night. We saw a lot of that during
their losing distreak in May. Sowhat are you what are your thoughts on

(01:21:16):
those? Yeah, Nick, youhave a little bit of a noisy phone.
So I'm gonna I'm gonna put youdown and then I'll respond. I'll
push back slightly on the the ideathat the Reds and Guardians should be a
weekend series, or that it's notas profitable as it could be. The
Reds had forty two thousand last night. They had thirty four thousand the night

(01:21:40):
before. Last year when they cameto Cincinnati, they did it on a
three two, one night middle ofthe week. It was packed. Then
two of the more uh two ofthe more profitable games midweek games of the
year. Uh. So they're doinggood, and they know people from Cleveland
will come, certainly in the middleof the summer. I see your point

(01:22:01):
for sure, but on a weekend, if it's only two games, with
the way the new schedule works out, I don't know if there's a way
around that. But I hear yourpoint. But I also think both teams
are doing a pretty good job withthat. I think they're doing fine.
I had the same thought when Iwas at the game last night, Nick,
that when they play good pitching, they are going to struggle. And

(01:22:23):
part of that is why I wasso adamant on they need a power bat.
Part of that is hoping that themore they see good pitching, maybe
eventually they'll get better. Maybe they'llget they'll get more consistent. Whatever it
might be, but yeah, theGuardians have among the best pitching staffs in
baseball, certainly one of the bestbullpens, if not the best bullpen in

(01:22:44):
baseball. The Reds put together somecompetitive at bats, but really we're not
threatening at any point against them.So yeah, I'm right there with you.
I have the same concern. Canthey you know, how far can
they go? And when they getthere, how far can they actually go
against high level pitching. That's areally good question. Let's take a break,

(01:23:06):
we'll come back. We'll talk toMarcus and John Michael. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty, ESPN fifteen thirty. Can Ihearts Sincy three sixty continues on

Heisman. If you're interested, let'sgo to Covington. Marcus is there?
What's up? Marcus? Marcus? Are you there? Yeah? You there?

(01:23:54):
Yes, I'm here. What's up? So how much longer do we
need to go until, like theReds haters or the guys that want them
to fail, stopped living in thebeginning of May. What do you mean
so like the caller earlier talked abouthow the Reds winning is not sustainable because

(01:24:16):
we count on Jamber to hit twohome runs, Well that was his first
two home multi home run game ofthe year and over the last three or
four weeks. I mean you can'treally go by Friedel his first time around
because by the time he started gettingback into swing of things, he got
plunked again and got put back onthe il. But now he's starting to

(01:24:38):
swing the bat and for power, which is kind of surprising. India's back
over to around two forty five. He's got I think top five in baseball
and walk right and then Ellie's Ellieand hell Stevenson has been a quiet two
sixty five. Yes, So Idon't know why white people are still living
in the beginning of May when weweren't getting when last two and a half

(01:25:00):
three weeks we have been and it'sbeen winning baseball. Yeah, I think
more an anything Drew. People justneed to see them get above five hundred
and stay above five hundred, andI think at that point maybe you'll start
to silence some of the people. And I'm up against the clock here,
so I'm gonna let you go.I'm sorry, but I hear what you're
saying. When you look at therest of the National League Central Okay,

(01:25:23):
the Reds are the only team outsideof Milwaukee with a positive run differential.
The Reds have scored more runs thanthe Cubs, Cardinals, and Pirates.
They have allowed fewer runs than theCubs, Cardinals, and Pirates. They've
only allowed ten more runs than Milwaukee. And the Reds have the same record
as all those teams essentially except Milwaukee. And it's by a significant a margin

(01:25:44):
that they've scored more runs and allowedless runs. So you look at it
and you say, this team hasbeen a lot better than the way their
record shows. And can that turninto something for a longer period of time?
Winners of eight of their last tenwinnable games coming up, certainly into
Pittsburgh, huge series coming up againstMilwaukee and Boston. Can they get to
that consistently to make some of thosehaters go away? A couple of minutes

(01:26:09):
left here for John Michael. What'sup, John? Hey, how you
doing. I'm doing well, man, How are you? I'm doing very
very nice. I'm just sitting hereon my break from the lows right now.
You said you wanted to talk abouta stadium giveaway. You got,
yeah, But first I got toclear something up. I had no idea
tiny Pike smoke smoked darts. Hesaid, he's when he's not here,

(01:26:31):
he's smoking darts with his crew. He's throwing darts. He's not smoking them.
Oh man, I thought he saidsmoking dark Matt, He's throwing them.
Yeah, okay, Yeah. Iwent to this the Pete Rose giveaway
the last the softball game. Iwent with my uncle and they was doing

(01:26:54):
the bobblehat thing for the Pete Rosewhere he does his hat and his finger
up in there, and yeah,we only had one seed. It was
weird, but I mean we madeit work. We looked like a double
decker bus people. It was crazy. You still got the bottle head,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. How old were you nineteen

(01:27:15):
nineteen when you did that? That'sspecial. He is a great uncle.
Man. I got another thing Iwas thinking about. I've been hearing that
commercial. I've never my mom's nevertold me to not ride a horse with
somebody on that bareback thing, likeyeah, yeah, yeah, but uh

(01:27:36):
I've never done that. Man.But everything doing you and everything, you're
doing a good job carrying the show. I mean you only carry the show
every single day, right, yeah, it's just another day, John,
Really? Yeah, they need tocall it Austin three sixty five. Now
come on with it, John,I'll see you working. Hey, I
love you. You call me big, and that's crazy, man. I

(01:27:56):
weigh one hundred and seventy six pounds. I've been working these papers. I
think I got bop my aldes.I went to my neighbor's pool the other
day and he's like, why areyou wearing that leopard print wrist brace out
of the water. I was like, well, I like tigers, and
he's like, well, that's leopardprint. I said, wellme, man,
I made a mistake. But youknow what, uh, you know
what? Uh? That that rapperfrom Louisville. Uh, what's his name?

(01:28:19):
That Jack guy? What's his name? You know what he says about
cheetah print. No, I haveno idea, man, I don't listen
to rap music, he said,uh, she wearing cheetah print. That's
how bad she want to be spottedround your boy? Jack harb oh no

(01:28:41):
Diddy, Yeah, yeah, no, Diddy. Definitely none of that.
John, Thank you, I loveyou, I love you. Maybe I'll
call in one one one day thisweekend. Can't wait. B seyah,
she wearing cheetah print. That's howbad she want to be spotted round your

Last night was La de la CruzBobblehead Night. You've been to a
lot of state in your life. What's the best stadium giveaway you've ever seen
or gotten? I? Okay, that's a great question. That's why you

(01:30:10):
do what you do for a livingAustin. I would say a World Series
replica ring of the two thousand andfour Red Sox. That's cool. That's
what that I think because I aminfatuated and obsessed with championship rings, and
you know, it's growing up akid and growing up with a big Red

(01:30:32):
machine. I always thought it wouldbe cool to have my name on a
World Championship ring. I always thoughtthat would be that would be awesome,
and so I think the World Seriesrang back in two thousand and five for
the four season. That was thecoolest giveaway that I can remember. It's

(01:30:53):
funny you say that you remember too. I'll give you a runner up.
Yah, let me give you arunner up. David Ortiz. When he
hit his five hundredth home run,the Red Sox came up with a blank
chain oo a huge five hundred onit, and I have that up in
my office, SOO, okay, that's a good one. I'm actually going

(01:31:17):
in about a month from now,I'm going to Atlanta to watch the Reds
and the Braves and I think they'regiving away a Ronald Akunya chain kind of
similar to that, so that mightbe what I'm looking for. All right.
Good to know, Mike Petralia. It's actually funny you say that about
the rings. I just read astory a couple of weeks ago that there
was a shipment of fake Super Bowland World Series rings that was seized in

(01:31:41):
the port of Cincinnati that was worthover one point four million dollars. So
I don't know if you had anythingto do with that or not. Trags
based on what you like, butcertainly interesting. Nonetheless, let's start with
the Bengals mini camp wrapped up today. Your biggest takeaway from those three days,
as much as you can hand takeaway, was what Joe Burrow through but

(01:32:04):
kind of backed off a little biton Day one yesterday. On Wednesday,
he probably exerted the most force thathe had behind the ball in a couple
of weeks, and the defense hada really good day against Burrow. But

(01:32:25):
I think Burrow is through Mini campand feeling like, yeah, it's sore.
It still hurts a little bit likeit should, but he feels and
I think the rest of the trainingstaff and head coach Zach Taylor is taking
his word for it that he'll beready to go for week one in September,

(01:32:45):
and I believe him. I thinkthere'll be some bumps along the way,
but that's my biggest takeaway. OneA would be Jamar Chase not practicing,
and I think they're telling Jamar, you get ready on your own schedule,
and we trust, given how you'vealways taken care of your body in

(01:33:05):
the past, that you will alsobe ready come week one when when the
games really count. So those wouldbe my two biggest takeaways. And you
know, I think those are twoof the most important players, right and
I think Zach Taylor knows that, and in managing those two players, empowering

(01:33:28):
those two guys to take care ofthemselves and trusting that they will take care
of their bodies. That would bethose would be my biggest takeaways. Yeah,
I think it can also work asan example to the younger guys,
and there's a lot of them nowto say, hey, you know you
take care of yourself. This ishow you prepare and when you show up
at training campus is what it's supposedto look like. And you know,

(01:33:48):
I wonder how much kind of takeus inside what a mini camp practice is,
because this is a lot of installingthe offense and installing the new plays,
and what happened on the field atan actual practice may be less important
than the meetings. And it soundslike Joe and Jamar were very involved in
that in the installation of the wayDan Pitcher wants to do things. That

(01:34:11):
seems to be where they got alot of valuable time in with the with
the rest of the team. Isthat right, no question? Right on
the money, Austen. The communicationis the biggest thing. Joe Burrow talked
about this on Tuesday after practice.Knowing how to communicate in terms of what

(01:34:32):
play is called, what the audibleis, what you know some options off
the main play call that there are, especially with a new coordinator, that's
the biggest thing that you can teachat this time of year with you know,
the Jermaine Pratt hit on Charlie Jonesyesterday at practice. Aside there is

(01:34:54):
no contact, there's obviously no realrunning. It's all about passing technique,
formation, some protections. How doesthe offensive line call out their protection?
How does the quarterback call out anaudible? And where are the receivers supposed

(01:35:14):
to be if an audible is indeedcalled, And that's where it's really important
for the rookies to pay attention.I thought something that Zach Taylor said today
that was very interesting was about firstround pick of Marius Mims. He said,
he checked all the boxes in theoffseason program with us, he's ready
to go for training camp. That'sa good sign because I don't think Zach

(01:35:38):
Taylor would have gone out of hisway to say he checked all the boxes
unless a Marius Mims showed him andshowed the coaching staff that he was paying
very close attention to what was beingcoached up. You know, I think
when Mims was drafted, the ideawas kind of the narrative was kind of,
yeah, he's going to get achance to sit back and we'll see

(01:36:00):
what he looks like in training camp. But it feels like to me that
because of the way Zach addressed it, because of the first team reps that
he's gotten, because Trent Brown maybewasn't around as much, that maybe he's
got a better chance of winning thisjob than we thought when he was drafted
at the end of April. Idon't know if he's going to win the
job right out of the shoot.I think that's a lot to expect for

(01:36:25):
a tackle that is protecting Joe Burrow, you know, in NFL games,
given the state and the priority placedon edge rushers on opposing defenses. But
I do think if he makes goodprogress and you know, acclimates himself,
well, I think there's a chancethat he could compete midway through the season,

(01:36:47):
that might be more realistic. ButI don't think, you know,
and I think Trent Brown knows thisas a veteran, he knows that he's
been brought in one year. Proveit, you know, make sure you're
healthy enough, get on the fieldin the first eight weeks, let's say,
and let it play out from there. But another thing Zach Taylor talked
about today was the fact Austin thatso many things take on a life of

(01:37:13):
their own over the course of trainingcamp, over the course of preseason,
over the course of the regular season. That you can say whatever you want
now it doesn't mean anything. Yeah, and you can you know, and
you can show something on the fieldnow during mini camp and during OTAs,
but it doesn't really mean anything untilyou get closer to where the games and

(01:37:36):
the practices really matter and you startto ramp up. One more Bengals question
with Mike Petrellia CLNS Media. Oneof those guys that has turned some heads
is Dax Hill, moving from safetyto the outside quarterback has been a guy
that there's been some chatter about throughMini camp and OTAs. What have you
seen from him that has caused peopleto say, hey, Dax Hill looks

(01:37:59):
like he's making some progress here.Well, the way I phrased it in
my story for yesterday or for thismorning wrapping up yesterday is Dax Hill got
some run with the first team. And again, these are mini camp practices,
so be very cautious when reading intotoo much. But Zach Taylor said

(01:38:23):
this morning that Dax Hill has reallyshown them what they had hoped when they
moved him in the spring after thedraft from the safety room to the cornerback
room, and he's competing at avery high level, which I'm sure they
expected. But he is going toget a chance to compete with DJ Turner
for the left corner starting left cornerspot on lou Ana Romo's defense. What

(01:38:48):
do I think? I still thinkDJ Turner has a bit of an edge
in terms of his raw ability andskill set, his speed quickness as which
is very important when you put aguy on an island outside. DJ Turner

(01:39:09):
as a rookie last year, hada very good first half. He obviously
slid off a little bit in thesecond half of the season, and I
think the Bengals are doing kind ofa reset here to start the twenty twenty
four season to see, Okay,do we go with Dax Hill as a
starting quarterback or do we use themlike Kyle Hamilton as used by the Baltimore

(01:39:32):
Ravens. That's something that they haveto find out. Switching Gears over to
the Cincinnati Reds. Mike also hoststhe Code Reds podcast for CLNS Media.
Last night, Electric Atmosphere at GreatAmerican Ballpark, Red split a two games
set with the Guardians. They're playingbetter, they're not playing great. What

(01:39:55):
is the biggest part of this team? Maybe that's the biggest concern that gets
between them being where they are nowand where they want to be down the
stretch. What's the biggest concern?I consistent offense. If you look at
this team night in and night out, even you know, midway through last
night's game, the only hit theyhad was Jamer Candelarios solo home run at

(01:40:19):
the first inning, and then thebats go deathly quiet. And it appears
to me from my fought in thepress box, they give up at bats
too easily. Whereas if you watcha team like Cleveland, even though they
granted only scored twice, they hadmultiple opportunities put a lot of pressure on
the Reds relievers, and the Redsrelievers and the bullpen, and Lodolo certainly

(01:40:43):
responded to that even the night before. Cleveland puts a lot more pressure on
the opposing pitching staff than the Redsdo. And I think that is my
concern is that when the Reds goup against better teams, that's going to
be the big challenge. How theygenerate more offense. I think they're you

(01:41:04):
know, they're starting pitching, andtheir bullpen has answered the bill pretty much
from opening day going forward, andI think that I don't want to say
it's a pleasant surprise, but Ithink the certainly the rotation has started to
mature in a very good way.But the Reds as we hit the summer

(01:41:26):
months, they're going to have tostart showing that they are a capable offense.
And obviously, you know, youget Noel ve Marte back in late
June, at the end of thismonth, you get Cees eventually back from
his injury, and maybe maybe macMcLean in August. It's a vastly different
line up then. Yeah, youknow, I think the point I was

(01:41:50):
making earlier is that the inconsistencies onoffense, the way this team has built,
they can be really fun and theycan keep the lineup moving, and
that can be exciting. But whena lot of guys are maybe not consistent
and not hitting as much as wehad hoped them to be or what they
expected them to be, they don'thave a lot of power in the lineup
right now. A guy that canhit the ball over the fence and get

(01:42:11):
some runs. Last night, JamberCandelario was the example of what that can
be in this lineup. Do youthink that Nick Krawl would target someone that's
more of a power hitter, certainlya right handed bat if these inconsistencies continue
over the next few weeks. Well, that's a great question, and it
really hinges on how close the Redsmaintained, you know, heap to that

(01:42:32):
wild card position. If they're inthe mix and in there in the hunt,
they will with you know, thepossibility of Matt mcclaying coming back.
I think Nick Krawl will definitely makea move or two. But the other
thing, and it goes without saying, they need Ellie Dela Cruz to figure
it out a little better at theplate. There was one at bat,

(01:42:56):
I think in his third at bat, where there were a couple of fast
up and in at his hands. He had no chance of hitting. And
good Ellie lays off those pitches andhe has shown he's capable of doing that
in the past. Last night hewas free wheeling and swinging at those pitches
up and in almost on his hands, and he has no chance of hitting

(01:43:16):
that baseball. So that's you know, one thing you look for Elie to
make, like make a little bitof an adjustment going forward. Mike Petrelliu
cl NS Media, Code Reds Podcast, The Jungle War Podcast. Mike,
thank you so much for making sometime for us. Take it easy,
you got it, You got it. Austin, have a good one you

(01:43:39):
too. That is Mike Petralia attrags on Twitter. Definitely worth the follow
and has written some good stuff lately. Talked to Ted Carris earlier today as
well about his contract extension. Let'stalk a little bit about Ellie de la
Cruz when we come back, becauselast night was frustrating. We've had these

(01:44:00):
moments of frustration with Ellie before weknow what David Bell has said about it.
I think I'm ready for something tobe done about it. Five on
three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. Phone lines open for the
next twenty minutes. I'm Austin Elmore. This is Cinty three to sixty on
the Home of the Bengals, Cincinnati'sESPN fifteen thirty. Nope, he is
back on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati'ssports station. Welcome back Cincy three sixty,

(01:44:29):
ESPN fifteen thirty. Man, Yesterdayhas flown by, Today has flown
by. I feel like I haven'teven gotten to half the stuff I want
to talk about. But that's agood thing. That's a good thing.
In the next couple of weeks,me and you as Tony is out on
ESPN fifteen thirty, Rick Yu Chinostops by in twenty minutes from now for
quick Hits and Locks of the night. He's in for MO this afternoon.

(01:44:53):
Load management June in full swing.Uh, let me just say this about
Ellie day la Cruz, because youknow, and listening to this show at
all, you know that I amnot mister get upset about the lineup.
It's just not who I am.I'm not that concerned about it. However,

(01:45:15):
I don't know how you can continueto put Ellie de la Cruz at
the number two spot in the order. We have talked about how this season
is about the balance between development andwinning, and you're trying to figure out
both of those things at the sametime. And that's not easy for an

(01:45:36):
organization to do, and some havedone it a lot better than others.
I think many would agree. TheReds have struggled with that this year.
And I don't know that Ellie dela Cruz is He's just not playing very
well. That's the only way tosay it. He's not making contact.

(01:45:57):
He's striking out at an alarming rate. And it's not just this, you
know, two or three week slump. In the month of May he hit
two oh eight. He was onbase at a two ninety eight clip.
He hit one home run. Inthe entire month of May, he had
just five RBI. That's not verygood. You look at the month of

(01:46:21):
June, he's hitting one fifty six. His on base percentage is two twenty
four. Now he's hit for powertwo more home runs over the last couple
of weeks, but still not verygood. Ellie da la Cruz in his
last thirty games has struck out fortythree times in one hundred and seventeen at

(01:46:43):
bats. He's hitting one seventy ninewith a two sixty seven on base percentage
and a two to ninety one sluggingpercentage over his last month of games.
This is not me saying that heneeds to be move to triple A.
This is not me saying that he'snot a good player. This is not
me saying that he's twenty two yearsold and we need to be patient with

(01:47:08):
him. I'm not saying anything likethat. About him and his future.
My point is, at some pointwinning has to matter, and Elie de
la Cruz isn't contributing to that rightnow. It's to the point where the
lineup needs to be adjusted. Heneeds to be moved down in the order

(01:47:30):
because he's coming to the plate intoo many important moments and not putting the
bat on the ball. The bareminimum for Ellie de la Cruz is to
make contact, because when he does, good things happen. He's not making
contact. Forty three strikeouts in hislast one hundred and seventeen at bats,
that's miserable. He's getting on baseunder a two seventy clip in his last

(01:47:56):
thirty games. That's miserable. Andfor somebody who's in that second spot in
the lineup, it has to bebetter than that. And so yes,
the development of Ellie being there, and David has talked about this. You
want to get him in as manyad bats as you can. You want
to get him in those big moments. You want to have those opportunities,
and with the third hole, thethree hole hitter behind him, give him

(01:48:18):
more pitches to hit and try toprotect him. All that makes sense to
me. I get the reasoning. However, it's not working, it's not
clicking. Something needs to be doneabout it. Move Ellie back in the
lineup. Think back to yesterday's lineup. I have no problem with you basically

(01:48:40):
taking Ellie out of the two holeand putting him at where herdabies was at,
at the seventh spot or the sixthspot or whatever it was, and
then just moving everybody else up.You know, maybe have Jonathan India hit
behind him, something like that. He's he's contributing to too many outs and
too many strikeouts and competitive at batsin big moments throughout this time where you're

(01:49:05):
trying to get your season back ontrack. And Ellie is a part of
the future and he should be apart of the future, and I want
him to be a part of thefuture. But his lack of productivity is
hurting this team. And sometimes whenyou're balancing the development in the winning,
sometimes you have to tip the scalestowards winning for a little while, because

(01:49:27):
none of the development is going tomatter if you're not winning. That that
has to take the cake here. You need to win. That's that's all
I care about. I don't givea damn if Ellie de la Cruz never
gets another hit in the big leaguesas long as the Reds win. To
me, it's not about a personalplayer's productivity. It's about what can the

(01:49:48):
team do. And right now he'snot helping as much as he's hurting,
and that needs to be addressed.Phone lines are open five point three seven
four nine, fifteen thirty. Let'sgo to Lexington and talk to Jeff.
Jeff wants to talk about Ellie dayLa Cruz. What's up, Jeff?
What do you say? Austin?Long time, no talk too. It's
good to hear your voice. Man, it's been a while. Hey,

(01:50:11):
brother, it has been Hey.I'm still listening every day you guys,
and of course Mo, I'm alwaysthere. I just don't always have something
to say. Well, thank you, I appreciate it. I talking about
Ellie. I hate to say this, Austin, but it scares me to
death. It's smacks of Billy Hamilton. I could be wrong about that.
What are your thoughts on that? What makes you like? What makes you

(01:50:34):
say that about Billy Hamilton? Imean, obviously you know he has the
speed, he has the glove.Billy Hamilton possessed that as well, but
he struggled to get on base, you know, to use that speed,
and you know that one thing youcan't do Austin is still first base.
Yes, yeah, the classic BillyHamilton moniker. Yeah, I get that.

(01:50:58):
It's just I think Ellie has moreraw talent than Billy ever did.
And I think that, you know, the potential is still so much higher,
and we've seen flashes of it evenprobably more consistently in his young career
than we ever saw Billy. SoI don't know that i'd go to Billy
Hamilton, but I get the concernbecause the highs are really really high and

(01:51:24):
the lows are really really low,and it's like, can't we at least
be in the middle somewhere. Yeah. I don't want to say that about
him, but it just to meit smacks of that. But I would
agree with you he has far moretalent probably than them Billy Hamilton ever did,
but of course they both possest thespeed and the gloves. So like

(01:51:46):
you say, something's got to bedone. I don't know what that is,
but something's got to be done.Yeah, Jeff, thank you for
the phone call. Good to hearyour voice, and I think something will
be done. But it's just like, do you want to win or not?
That's that's what it's about. Likehe's just not helping at that spot

(01:52:06):
in the lineup. He can contribute, He can be a part of it.
I want him to everybody does. You saw forty thousand people there trying
to get a bobble ahead of theguy, but it's not working. We've
seen the lineup tweak before. We'veseen guys get benched. Now, who
are you gonna put in for EllieDaily Cruise, Santiago Espinal? I mean

(01:52:28):
I get that. It's not likeyou know, you're not fired up about
that, but I mean, shoot, Noelvie Marte can play shortstop? Canelli
just DH for a few games?Get out of the field. Just folks
on hitting. I don't know whenthat happens at the end of the month,
but come on, it's just itseems too obvious to do something.

(01:52:50):
Quit doing stuff that doesn't work andmove and pivot, go in a different
direction. Yes, the team hasturned things around. They're a lot more
competitive, they look better. Everybodylooks better except one guy. And you
have to be able to adjust, and David's done that in the past.

(01:53:12):
Why not now? Let's go toFlorence where Mark is standing by. What's
up? Mark? You know what'sup, Austin. It's good to hear
your voice. Man, Hey,Yeah, I mean we we agree on
a lot of things. I justheard you say. I mean, I've
been staying there for a while.I think Freedo and India should be one

(01:53:33):
too at the top of the lineup. But we can save that conversation for
another day. But as far asElie, from watching him hit, especially
when he bats left hand, Ithink he needs to choke up on the
bat so his swing can be alittle shorter right and a little quicker because
when Pictures told him Pictures, ifyou ever notice, if the pitches are

(01:53:57):
coming in towards him or away fromhim, and they down, he swings
right over top of his back. His swing is too long and it takes
him too long. He can't getto those pitches. And I think I
think the league, I think theleague has figured out how to pitch to
him. He if I'm a pitcher, he's easy to pitch too. I

(01:54:17):
would not throw him anything straight.I would just throw him. I would
throw him everything down and in andmake sure that everything drops down because he
gonna swing right over top of itbecause he's gone yeah, and there's been
no adjustment made to it. Mark, I mean, you're right, Guys
like him that are tall typically havethose longer swings, and there's holes in

(01:54:38):
those swings. And we've seen thatand and and what we heard in spring
training was that Ellie had made adjustmentsto fix that and and still and he
did, he did show signs ofit. But now it's it's that they're
still getting away with those pitches andhe's still not seeing success. So you
have to make more adjustments. You'vegot to be able to tweak that swing
and shorten it up. I agreewith you, Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(01:55:00):
And then I think when he battedleft handed, he needed to take
his right leg and open it upa little bit so he can get to
that down in the end pitch becausepitchers, pitchers get him out when they
throw something down and then swing rightover top of it. So those are
two biggest adjustments I see that heneeds to make choke up on the bat,

(01:55:21):
shorten up, especially when he getstwo strikes. Sure, choke up
on the back and shorten that swingup so he can get to all those
pitches. And I think I thinkyou'll see him make more contact, but
he has to be willing to makethose adjustments. So I'll get off and
then listen to the rest. Yeah, Mark, thank you. I agree

(01:55:42):
with you. I think you makegood points. Those are that's the fundamentals
of baseball, right, fundamentals ofswing. That's what they teach you in
little league. That's what they teachyou growing up. Choke up on the
bat, shorten up the swing,you know. I don't. I don't
think li Da la Cruz is alittle league ball player. I think he's
a great baseball player. But it'snot working. Where the adjustments and it's
not like it's been two weeks. It's not like it's been six games.

(01:56:05):
It's a month and a half.Figure it out, because I don't have
patience for this anymore. Since hethree to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty, contact
text for the covers for welcome back. Since e three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty,

(01:56:38):
Cincinnati's sports station A few minutes fromnow, Rick Yu Chino stops by
for quick hits and locks of thenight. Chino in for Moeggar this afternoon.
We'll find out what he's got comingup from three to six. Moe
is back on Monday, according tothe schedule that I have and looking forward
to that. If you're wondering abouttomorrow normal Tuesday show, Charlie Goldsmith at

(01:57:00):
one and Tommy g at two, talk a little soccer, talkbacks, quick
hits, others, all that normalstuff coming up on tomorrow's show from twelve
to three. Right here on ESPNfifteen thirty. I mentioned earlier the best
stadium giveaways of all time, andI'll quickly tell this story because it's one

(01:57:21):
of the coolest things that's ever happenedto me in my life, in one
of the perks of this business. So I've been here for almost six years
now, and in the fall ofnineteen, towards the end of the twenty
nineteen red season, we used todo these affiliate days at Reds games.

(01:57:45):
Basically every day there's an affiliate atRed's home games because the Reds radio network
is so big, and every year, at the last home game is the
WLW affiliate game, and all theReds producers and some people from WLW get
the chance to go to the gameand we sit in the auxiliary booth,
which is right next to where Martyand the Cowboy were and they give us

(01:58:10):
a bunch of food and you know, give us some bibbleheads and all that
stuff. They took great too, great take great care of us. That's
really one of the cool perks ofthe job. And so the cool part
about twenty nineteen was that it wasMarty's final game that he was broadcasting,
and it was against the Milwaukee Brewers, and so I was just excited to

(01:58:31):
be there and get to see Martyand do the whole nine yards. And
so we come in and we getour radios that they give away, and
we go into the booth and youcan look into the inside the radio booth
and talk to them, and you'reallowed to bring somebody with you. So
I brought my dad. Cool experienceright for him too. And it was

(01:58:54):
funny because nobody really talked to eachother. We all got our radios out
and listened to the game on theradio, and it came with little headsets
so you could listen to it inyour earbuds. I didn't really want to
talk to anybody. I didn't reallywant to talk to my dad. Here
I am getting to watch this Redsgame from a radio booth and listen to

(01:59:15):
Marty Brenneman do the entire game withthis little radio with the Reds logo that
says in this one belongs to theReds on it. And people really didn't
talk to each other that much.Among all of us producers who were there,
we just kind of listened and appreciatedMarty Brenneman, and it was one
of the coolest things ever. Andthey were doing a big ceremony after the

(01:59:39):
game, and so right when thegame ended, we there's probably two minutes
after the game ended, whatever itis, we're saying goodbye, and we
go out to the elevator to godown to the field, and sure enough,
they're blocking the elevator for Marty Brenneman. And my dad just unapologetically does

(02:00:03):
not care, just do whatever.I'm thinking, this is cool. We
get to watch Marty go by,we get to you know, shake his
hand, blah blah blah, andhe walks by and blah blah blah,
and he's shaking hands. You tellhim thank you the whole nine yards.
My Dad's like, can I geta picture with you? I was like,
oh gosh, this is the worsttime to ask for a picture.
But Marty said, yeah, tookhis picture and like the first hand Marty

(02:00:26):
shakes when he leaves the room.In his last broadcast was me and my
dad and takes a picture with mydad and it's like live on TV on
Channel five. Mark Slaughter is likefollowing him with a camera. And so
that will always be a very specialstadium giveaway to me. And I still
