This is Skyline Chile. Since hethree to sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati,

(00:05):
sponsored in part by Skyline Chile.Stop by Skyline Chile for a three way
or cheese coney today. Feeling good, It's Skyline time. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Hi, Hello and welcome in since e three
to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty for thenext three hours. My name is Austin

(00:28):
Elmore. Happy to be with youtoday. Still riding solo for today and
tomorrow. Big Tone expected back frompaternity leave on Wednesday, certainly looking forward
to that. We have a lotto talk about over the course of what
happened over the weekend. We've gotthree hours to do it. It was

(00:51):
a great weekend for the Bostonians whocame to Cincinnati for a little summer weekend
because they saw the Red Sox taketwo out of three from the Reds and
they saw the New England Revolution upsetFC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium on Saturday night.
There is a ton of stuff toget to across the sports world,
and I want to hear from youyour biggest takeaways from the weekend. That

(01:15):
was whether it's the Reds whether it'sFC Cincinnati, whether it's Joe Burrow being
in Paris in Paris Fashion Week onthe runway with Justin Jefferson, or Travis
Kelcey being on stage with Taylor Swift. Whatever you want to talk about,
phone lines rope in five point threeseven four nine, fifteen thirty. You
can also tweet it me at audielmoreA U T y E L M O

(01:38):
r E. At the one o'clockhour. At the top, we're going
to talk to Jeff Carr. Isaid, I want to get Jeff on
because he's the most positive Reds personI know. I cannot find a lot
of positives right now. I amgrowing frustrated and weary and tired. I've
been trying to figure out how manytimes I can say the same thing differently

(02:00):
about the Reds. It's it's sortof my job, but I'm struggling with
it, and I'm looking for somebeacon of light and I'm gonna do that
with Jeff Carr. At the topof our number two, we'll do talkbacks
right after that we are completely open. In our number three, we should
hear from Pat Noonan, the headcoach of FC Cincinnati. Another debilitating injury

(02:23):
that we'll get to in just amoment. We'll hear Pat talk about that
at the end of the show.Quick Hits and Locks of the Night with
Moegger, who is back in forhis regularly scheduled three to six this afternoon.
We'll talk to moe about his showand others. You should know that
our one of Sincy three to sixtyis brought to you by our good friends

(02:44):
at Skyline Chili. And good newswith Skyline Chili is they are now serving
breakfast daily at five locations at theFairborne location on Dayton Yellow Springs Road,
at the Loveland location on love LynnMadeira Road, how about in Harrison on
Harrison Avenue, Cherry Grove on OhioPike, and downtown on Fourth Street.

(03:07):
Now serving breakfast daily at all fiveof those locations that I believe still at
the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport,So whenever you're feeling good and hungry,
it's Skyline time, including breakfast.I have a flight in a few weeks
and I am very much looking forwardto trying the Skyline breakfast before the flight.

(03:29):
Now, I don't know if thepeople that are gonna be on the
flight with me are looking forward tothat, but I certainly am looking forward
to trying Skyline Breakfast for the firsttime coming up, and maybe it'll happen
even before then. Let's review thetop stories of the weekend, and those
top stories are brought to you byClous Roofing System of Cincinnati, your trusted

(03:50):
local roofing and gutter company. Youcan visit krs Sincy with a y dot
com. Big story obviously, thedrop two out of three to the Boston
Red Sox. The Reds have notwon a series since June sixth through the
ninth, when they were in Chicagoand won the series with the Chicago Cubs.

(04:12):
They have lost every series they havebeen in since, and they have
split one in a two game setwith the Cleveland Guardians in that time.
And this is a series that theReds absolutely had a chance to win.
Certainly, when you look back onSaturday's performance and how they sort of urinated
down their leg losing to the RedSox four to three, that was one

(04:34):
they could have won yesterday, notjust the vibe was off a little bit,
Nicolodolo dealing with the small injury, and they couldn't do anything about the
Red Sox but in the umpire forthat matter. But this was a winnable
series for this ball club and theyweren't able to get it done. They

(04:54):
won Friday Night five to two.Big night for Jamer Candelario, Big night
for Jonathan India hit a home runas well. How about this Reds had
no errors on Friday Night and theywon the game. Boston had three errors
and they lost the game. AndrewAbbot was spectacular. You could tell those

(05:15):
Boston Red Sox had no idea whatwas coming. Five and two thirds for
Abbit didn't go deep into the game, but he had ten strikeouts and just
two earned runs given up. Hecontinues to impress and be one of those
guys who has kind of picked upwhere he left off last season. Fast
forward to Friday, they lose fourto three. Ellie de la Cruz though
three hits, including a home run. Spencer Steer hits a home run.

(05:39):
You're thinking, okay, let's gofour Reds a multi home run game.
Frankie Montas six innings, two earned. You'll take that every time. But
the bullpen gave it up. JustinWilson couldn't get anybody out. Stuart Fairshout
had a bad throw and Ellie dela Cruz got picked off. Jamer Candelario
had an air and they blew athree to nothing lead and lost by a

(06:03):
score of four to three. Thenyesterday Redzlou's seven to four. Nicolodolo has
a blister on his index finger thatyou'll hear from David Bell in just a
little bit what exactly that problem wasand how that caused some issues for Lodolo.
He also did not get any helpfrom the umpiring crew. Todd Titchner,

(06:23):
the home plate umpire was terrible yesterday. If you look at the umpire
scorecards, he did have a ninetysix percent called strike accuracy in the major
league averages eighty eight, which isjust insane to say that out loud.
But his three worst calls, themost impactful worst calls from Todd Titchener yesterday

(06:46):
were all three on three to twocounts from Nicolodolo to Boston Red Sox hitters.
All three of them were strikes thathe called a ball that takes away.
You know, Lodolo does not walka lot of batters to begin with.
He walked four yesterday, three ofthem on missed calls from Todd Titchner.
The fourth walk was the one thatsent David Bell over the top.

(07:10):
He ends up getting ejected, thethirtieth career ejection for David Bell as the
manager of the Reds. That tieshim for Sparky Anderson for the most all
time in Red's history. If youremember that first walk that he issued to
Rafael Devers in the top of thefourth on a clear strike, three is

(07:30):
what it should have been. Thefollowing batter, Connor Wong goes deep with
a two run home run that putBoston on top two to nothing. Reds
did rally on Saturday, or excuseme, on Sunday, and had some
big hits in some big moments, but not quite enough to get over the
hump. Brent Souter got a littlebit roughed up later on in the inning.
But if you look back to Saturday, there were four Reds with multi

(07:54):
hit games. If you look backto yesterday, dal La Cruz, India,
Stuart Fairchild all with multi hit games. So if we are looking for
something positive, maybe there's some offensethat is brewing. I don't know.
Final note on Todd Titchener. Thehomeplate umpire not everything is the umpire's fault,
but it certainly did play a role. According to ump scorecards, the

(08:16):
overall favor was for a run anda half in favor of Boston. Not
great from him, and Reds droppedthat series two. The Boston Red Sox
back in action tonight Monday Tuesday Wednesday, up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Thankfully,

(08:37):
the Reds will not face Paul Skinsin this series. Skeins pitched yesterday
for the Pirates and a loss tothe Tampa Bay Rays. Cincinnati is thirty
six and forty one right now. They are in last place in the National
League Central. I'll give you threepositives. I'll give you a couple of
negatives. Positives Elie de la Cruz, Jamer Candelario, Red's pitching. I

(08:58):
think those are three positive negatives.Their base running stinks, their baseball like
Q is nonexistent, and their defenseis terrible. And a season that is
supposed to be about development and winning, I'm not seeing a lot of either
of those two things. Carson Spiersgoes for Cincinnati tonight. He goes up
against Bailey Falter, left hander thatpitched seven innings of two run baseball against

(09:20):
the Reds last week and He onlythrew eighty pitches in those seven innings,
so should be an interesting one forBailey Falter seeing him again today. Will
Benson was hit on the elbow latein yesterday's game on the underside of his
elbow. He ran the bases butleft the game and did not come in
defensively. After that, X rayswere taken on his elbow. They came

(09:43):
back negative, so it looks likeWill Benson is going to be okay.
The problem, however, is thatWill Benson is for like his last twenty
or twenty one or something along thoselines. Speaking of for twenty, how
about Noel v. San Marte downin Louisville. He's oh, for his
last twenty. He is struggling mightily. He's supposed to be back here in

(10:07):
two days from now. I don'tknow if that's going to happen. That
is everything you need to know aboutthe Reds. What else happened in the
world of sports. FC Cincinnati upsetover the weekend and a two to one
loss to New England at TQL Stadium. It was a sloppy game. There
was a ton of fouls, andat the end of the game a heartbreaking
moment Nick Haglan, fan favorite Cincinnatikid, a guy that the club is

(10:30):
now leaning on to fill the voidin that center back position with Matt Miosga
and Miles Robinson gone. Well,he broke his fibula at the end of
the game on Wednesday, or excuseme, on Saturday. He will be
out for a couple of months. And FC Cincinnati now have serious problems on
that back line. They have givenup twelve goals in the last five games.

(10:54):
They're still just two points behind Miami, and they do have one more
game played than them. They faceoff with Miami in just a couple of
weeks. It'll be without Lionel Messi. Four into Miami. You'll hear from
the gaffer, the head coach ofFC Cincinnati, Pat Newton, at the
top of our number three. Howabout Joe Burrow stealing the show in Paris

(11:16):
at Vogue Fashion Week or Paris FashionWeek or Vogue World twenty twenty four something.
I don't know anything about fashion, but I know Joe Burrow was there
and he was walking in the runway. And there's an article in Vogue.
It actually quotes Joe Burrow. Heeven created some of the captions for some
of the photos. Fascinating stuff forthe Bengals quarterback and again an evolution I

(11:41):
feel like for him over the lastseveral months he has changed and certainly putting
himself out there a lot more.Don't know if anybody cares about that.
I am looking forward to this though. The first time Joe Burrow throws an
interception, somebody is gonna say, well, if he would have spent more
time looking looking at his playbook insteadof gallivanting in France at the Fashion Week,

(12:03):
maybe he wouldn't have thrown that interception. I look forward to hearing that
when that happens. What else wegot? Stanley Cup Final Game seven tonight
at eight o'clock back in Florida. It is Edmonton up against the Florida Panthers.
The Oilers looking to come back froma three nothing deficit. I like
their odds, despite the fact thatFlorida is favored in that one. How

(12:28):
about this another Winner take All Men'sCollege World Series Game three tonight, Texas
A and M up against Tennessee.Tennessee came from behind to stave off elimination
yesterday. Winner takes All for theNational Championship tonight in Omaha. Yesterday in
Connecticut the Travelers Championship. Boy,that was exciting. Towards the very end.

(12:50):
You've got Tom Kim and Scotti Schefflergoing at it. And on the
eighteenth green protesters I believe they wereprotesting environ mental issues and primarily golf courses
and the effect that they have onthe environment. They stormed onto the course,
onto the green. In the eighteenthScotty Scheffler misses his putt, forces

(13:11):
a playoff with Tom Kim in whichthey played the eighteenth hole again a sudden
death and Scottie Scheffler won. Butit was surreal scenes in Connecticut over the
last hour or so of that tournament, with Tom Kim and Scotti Scheffler battling
it out to the very end.More soccer news yesterday, the United States

(13:35):
men's national soccer team got their firstgame under their belt in the Copa America
tournament, and they did so bybeating Bolivia to nil in Dallas. So
congratulations to Miles Robinson and the men'snational team. They are back in action
again shortly. How about w NBAaction yesterday? That was exciting. It

(14:00):
was the Indiana Fever against the Chicagoskuy in Chicago again Caitlin Clark against Angel
Reese, and this time Angel Reesewent off twenty six or excuse me,
twenty five and sixteen for Angel Reese. They get the last laugh. Sky
get the victory over Indiana in anawesome performance by Angel Reese. Other NFL

(14:22):
news, the Green Bay Packers haveunanimously voted and named Ed Policy as their
next chairman, president and CEO.He will take over that role next summer
as Ted Thompson leaves. What elsedo we have the Cavs. The Cleveland
Cavaliers have hired a new head coach. Kenny Atkinson, former Golden State Warriors

(14:45):
assistant, will be the new headcoach in Cleveland. Also coming up later
this afternoon, the Los Angeles Lakerswill announce officially Jj Reddick as their new
head coach. And finally, alsooverseas in London, Taylor Swift continues her
era's tour and a special guest arrivedon stage. The former bear Cat Travis

(15:07):
Kelcey made his first appearance in aTaylor Swift show. When he was on
stage as a dancer. That sumsup everything you could possibly want to know
about what happened over the weekend. If I missed anything, let me know
five three seven four nine fifteen thirty. You can also tweet it me at
Audiellmore AU T y E L Mr E. Your biggest takeaway from the

(15:33):
weekend? The Reds? What areyou thinking? How are you feeling?
I know we said at the endof June get to five hundred. I'm
not feeling good about that. Theywill have to. They would need to
be nearly perfect over the course ofthe next few days to figure that out.
Then they got to go to SaintLouis and the Cardinals are now two
games over five hundred. The Yankeesafter that, we know, are really

(15:54):
really good. I'm worried about wherethis team is at. I'm worried about
where they will be by the timethe All Star Break rolls around in a
couple of weeks from now. Anythingthat you took away from the weekend Reds,
Bengals, NBA, otherwise, whateverit is, golf, I don't
care. Five win three seven fournine fifteen thirty is the phone number.

(16:18):
You can tweet it me as wellat Audi Elmore A U T y E
L M O r E. Willtake a break, We'll be back hour
one of Sincy three to sixty.Brought to you by our friends at Skyline,
Chile. Right here on the homeof the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen
thirty. Hey Alexa, what's goingon? ESPN fifteen thirty. Jamber Candelario

(16:40):
steps to the plate. He startedthis home run. The mean he's got
another one that is out a head, a right pild three to two Reds.
Second home run of the ball gamefor Jamber Candelao apparently got it out
of about Oh my fuck, youdidn't be the whole PN of the game

(17:03):
combined between these two teams. Wow, that's what it sounded like over the
weekend. Tommy Thrall and Jeff Brantleyon the call seven hundred WLW and our
power Player of the Weekend, presentedby Cincinnati Tax Resolution powered by Toave Sheldon,
none other than Jamer Candelario continues tohit the ball well, hit the

(17:25):
ball for power. Certainly the Red'shottest hitter at the moment. Jamer is
our power Player of the Weekend, brought to you by our good friends at
Cincinnati Tax Resolution and Toave Sheldon.I missed one thing in the weekend rundown.
It happened this morning. It wasannounced. For our wrestling fans out

(17:45):
there, don't say I never saidanything about you. The WWE, in
partnership with the Indiana Sports Corporation, had a agreement announced today that will ring
three of the WWE's largest stadium events, WrestleMania, Summer Slam, and Royal

(18:07):
Rumble, to Indianapolis at Lucas OilStadium. The first will be on February
first, twenty twenty five, andLucas Oil Stadium will host all three of
those events starting with the roy RoyalRumble on February first, twenty twenty five.
So for our wrestling fans out there, there you go. That's not
far away at all. You couldhead up the road to go see some

(18:30):
wrestling at Lucas Oil Stadium, whichI think is probably the best stadium in
America, at least in my opinionwhen it comes to those sorts of events.
So there is that you are nowfully up to date. Five one,
three, seven four nine, seventhousand is the phone number talking about
the Reds. And you know,I've just been trying to figure out how

(18:56):
to explain the way that I feelbecause I don't know that there is a
person or a player out there that'sgoing to come in and fix the Reds
issues. I don't want to putall of this squarely on David Bell,
because he doesn't deserve all of theblame, but he does deserve more blame
than most people. I would thinkthe injuries certainly play a part of it.

(19:17):
They've struggled against good teams and goodpitchers. That's part of it as
well. And you've got a bunchof guys on the team that you didn't
expect to be playing significant roles.I kept going back to the stat at
the beginning of the year about howwith Siinzel gone and Will Myers gone and
Kevin Newman gone and all those guysthat you would be replacing twenty one percent
of your at bats with better players. Well, it turns out I was

(19:41):
wrong. Will Benson and Santiago Espinaland whoever else, Luke Mayley over the
course of the season getting significant timehas hurt this team. Those guys are
not high level major league players, and it is a part of the story.
I'm running out of ways to tryto talk about it because I'm reminded

(20:04):
of something Marty Brenneman said to methe first time I ever met Marty Brenneman,
he said, do you love baseball? And I said yeah, and
he goes good, because you're gonnaget really sick of it. And I'm
kind of sick of baseball right now. I'm kind of sick of the same
story over and over and over again. With the Reds, it's been They've
played seventy games, and with theexception of the seven game win streak,

(20:29):
the vast majority of they've played seventyseven games, the vast majority of the
other seventy games have been a basicallywhat you saw this weekend. And I
want to blame David Bell and thecoaching staff for the just general lack of

(20:49):
baseball IQ that this team has.I want to blame them for poor base
running. I want to blame themfor poor defense. You do have to
be able to understand that. Onthe flip side of that coin is the
fact that some of these guys makingthese mistakes, the Stewart Fairchilds of the
world, they were not supposed tobe guys that you're counting on to win

(21:11):
you baseball games, not guys thatyou're counting on to play significant innings over
the course of a season. Theseare supposed to be into the bench role
player guys. Now Ellie de laCruz is not, and him getting picked
off on the base pass the otherday completely unacceptable. That cannot happen.
You have a three to one lead. I get that you're aggressive, I

(21:32):
get that's who you are, butthat cannot happen. You have to be
able to understand in that situation.Getting picked off is not not at all
something that's even within the realm ofpossibility, and yet it happened running on
contact with the infield in I justthink the identity of this team. I'm

(21:55):
wondering about their ability to adjust itbased on the players that they have.
Because if everybody is healthy and everybodyis who you expected them to be at
the beginning of the season, thisteam is fine. I mean, even
if you look at their Pythagorea andwin loss right now, which is run
differential, they're supposed to be threegames over five hundred, but they're not.

(22:17):
If you look at who this teamwas supposed to be at the beginning
of the year, they have aparticular identity, they have a particular philosophy.
But now with so many guys Espinalfair Child Benson, Maley so on
that are playing significant time more thanyou expected. You have to be able

(22:40):
to adjust your philosophy to better fitthe players that are now on your team.
And I think that's where this organizationhas failed. You cannot continue to
be an incredibly aggressive team on thebase pass when you don't have as good
a players on the base pass orin the lineup coming up behind them.

(23:00):
If there has been one strength ofthis team outside of pitching, it's been
their ability to hit with two strikesor hit with two outs, and multiple
times that's been taken away from them, the chance to score in those two
out hits because of the philosophy ofrunning on contact or whatever it might be.
Or getting picked off at second base. It's one thing to get caught

(23:26):
stealing. I can live with that. Getting picked off is unacceptable. We
talked about the Nick Martine thing.Getting picked off. There's another guy who's
taking a lot of at bats thisyear. It's just it feels to me
like a failure from the organization toadapt to what they currently have. Will

(23:48):
Benson has taken a significant step back. I don't know how you can look
at Will Benson and say, yeah, we're gonna keep running him out there.
If this season is about development,I'm not seeing a lot of it
from him at the major league level. It's worked in the past to send
him to Triple A. Maybe that'sthe next move, and I understand that

(24:11):
there's not an embarrassment of riches inthe minor league system to just pull guys
up from At this point, I'mnot even really focused on the end of
this season. I'm not really focusedon whether or not they make the playoffs.
I'm focused on does this team havethe ability to develop and evaluate who

(24:32):
they have now so that these issuesdon't happen again in the future. I
know Chad talked about this the otherday too, questioning the organization's ability to
develop actual hitters. That's a legitimatequestion. Really, everything they do deserves
to be questioned because none of ithas worked for the better part of the

(24:56):
last thirty years. Now, Ilook at this season, which was supposed
to be better than it is rightnow, and certainly there is half a
season left. You never know whatcan happen. I'm not saying they're completely
done. I'm saying it's hard forme to believe that this team will have
anything in it at the second halfof the season to make me believe they
can go to the playoffs or wina playoff series. What I'm saying is

(25:21):
I fear that this team will neverbe able to reach its actual potential because
of this organization's inability to develop. Now, development we don't always see right
away. I think the example ofthat is what Hunter Green has been this
year, phenomenal, What Nicolodolo hasdone this year, phenomenal. Fernando Cruz

(25:45):
to an extent, saw a littlebit of it last year, step forward
this year. Elie de la Cruz. There's a lot of good and bad
in his development, but anybody whoknows baseball will tell you Ellie de la
Cruz is developing at a good pace, moving forward, forward, up into
the right basically now. I don'tknow if you can say that for Tyler

(26:06):
Stevenson and Jonathan India, guys thathave basically stayed about the same level since
they've gotten to the big leagues.Graham Ashcraft seems to have taken a dip
and is playing well in Triple Aright now. Maybe when he comes back
we see more of that up andto the right that we saw from Hunter
Green. There are a few guysthat just come in and are really good.

(26:27):
Andrew Abbott is one of those. He's basically been up into the right
from the moment he got here, with a couple of dips towards the end
of last season. Pitching is notmuch of a concern for me, but
hitting is, especially if your planis to build a team the way that
they did, and on paper, the Jamber Candelario thing is starting to work

(26:49):
out. You're starting to see whatthe vision was. This can be the
veteran guy in the lineup that canhit for power, that can hit for
extra bases. He's not supposed tobe in the lineup defensive every day,
because God knows he's terrible on defense, But where else are you gonna play
him half the time when you don'thave anywhere else to go. My fear

(27:10):
is that the organization will not getenough out of these guys, that all
of this will leave us at theend of the next few years looking around
saying, damn, what could havebeen? That's my fear. And does
Green's development and Lodolo's development and acouple of those other guys give me hope?
Absolutely does. Ellie de la Cruzgive me hope, absolutely, But

(27:33):
I've been trained to be dangled thispiece of meat, and I just keep
running on the treadmill forever and everand ever, and I never get the
meat. That's basically what this isand has been for the majority of my
life, and that is my fearwith this team. But I bought in
at the beginning of the year.I've defended the organization. I've been the

(27:57):
guy who defends Bell. I've beenthe guy who said I'm okay being patient.
I said that last year, butnow I don't feel that way now.
I feel frustrated. Now. Ifeel like I needed to see more
this year. Now I don't knowif I'm ever going to see it.

(28:18):
Is that fair in the grand schemeof things with all that's happened this year?
Maybe not, But it's kind ofhow I feel right now. I
know I'm not alone. It getsold, it gets frustrating, and I
think the build up of this seasonand who we thought these guys could be

(28:42):
provided a lot of hope for thisball club, provided a lot of hope
for the fan base, and nowyou kind of have to sit with it
and deal with the fact that theyaren't who we thought they were going to
be. Some of that is theirfault, some of it is not.
It's just been a tough pill toswallow phone calls when we get back.

(29:03):
Five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. Austin Elmore

Austin Elmore with you. Tony Pikeback on Wednesday. I have not heard
too much from the big fella, but uh, I know he's been locked

(29:48):
in, dialed in. He wasposting videos of Joe Burrow at Paris Fashion
Week, so clearly his priorities arein the right spot. At Tony Underscore
Pike fifteen. You'd like to seethat, uh? And what Tony has
been saying? Phone lines are open. Five one, three seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. You can also tweetit me at Audiel moore au t

(30:10):
y E L M O r E. Let's go to the phones and talk
to Jeff in Virginia. What's up, Jeff? Happy Monday, Austin.
Likewise, on that Penn play ad, were you reading that fast at the
end or are they speeding that up? You know what, I can neither
confirm nor deny. I can't sayit's hilarious, but we'll touch your brake

(30:32):
on that one. So a coupleof thoughts before the Reds. We have
a local sixteen year old high schoolkid here named Quincy Wilson running in the
men's four hundred medles finals at theOlympic Trials. Sixteen year old running against
grown men, So those of usaround here will be tuned into that.

(30:53):
You know, I believe there wasa running back that used to play for
the Bengals named Quincy Wilson. Sothat's you know where my mind goes.
But good luck to Quins. Weknow Stanley Wilson. Unfortunately, yes we
do. We can never forget aboutall right, good luck Quints. Also
on Joe, I'm really shocked thatwe haven't seen any of the look at

(31:14):
me, attention grabbing social media superfans walking around with suit jackets with holes
in the back. Well, it'syou know, it's it's early. There's
a lot of time for people toI'm sure that will be a cosplay event
surely early in the season. Andyou know what, good for them,
whatever they want to do. Whocares. September eight, you can count
on a bunch of people walking aroundwith jackets with holes in the backround.

(31:36):
I mean, hey, good luckif you if you want to ruin a
suit jacket, go ahead, exactlyexactly. So now onto the Reds.
So, you know, Saturday,at the end of the game, I
was like, all right, youknow, we got a month until training
camp. You know, I'll stillkind of pay attention whatever. And then
Sunday on the pregame was the nailon the coffin. I don't know if
you have it or not, butTommy interviewed Bell on the pregame and about

(32:00):
the base running. He goes,we're going to continue to run on contact.
We're very successful at it, andthat was it for me. I
turned it off after that was overand I'm like, okay, something things
are never going to see like we'revery successful. I'm like, oh really,
Well, I was watching on Sunday, I was watching for the first

(32:21):
four or five innings. I watchedthe Red Sox broadcast and Kevin Euculus was
kind of talking about that comment andthe way that the Reds were committed to
being aggressive, and he basically saidthey shouldn't be doing that with all these
guys hurt and with their inability tohit the ball, Like aggression can be
helpful, yes, but you don'thave a full squad to be able to

(32:44):
do that, and it cost them. And I thought Kevin Euculus was right
on the money. Yeah, ifI'd have been recording it, I would
have had to play it back tomake sure I heard him right and I
didn't misquote him. And maybe Jeffis on at one right he said,
yeah, yeah, yeah, Well, if Jeff Carr doesn't have an optimistic
tone of voice, we'll know wherein trouble. Yeah, I'm worried about

(33:05):
Jeff. This is this is awellness check as much as anything. Well
and the next time Ellie gets pickedoff second base, how about we see
him not go out to the field. The next inn he gets benched for
the rest of the game. Yeproblem with that? Yeah, I mean
I think I think that's a goodpoint. But you know, I don't
know that they trust anybody besides usbeen all to play shortstop. I don't
know. Yeah, it's really unfortunate. And like I said, I think

(33:28):
somebody said this morning, one monthfrom today, training camp starts. No,
uh, maybe for you and Tony, we can move into the summer
gold rooms of start, start, bench cut and then just talking about anything
that flies up again. Yes,yes, exactly. I have a great
bunday off Jeff, thank you,you too, that those days certainly are
coming, and maybe sooner rather thanlater. Uh yeah, one month from

(33:51):
today, that's true is training campand uh down there at at pay Course
Stadium, I believe season ticket holdersget access to the first handful of practice.
But yeah, yeah, I mean, it's just kind of where they're
at. I mean, I thinkthe All Star Break is always a pretty
good litmus test. They have winnablegames in the ten game. They have
a ten game home stand against teamsthat the Reds are able to beat prior

(34:16):
to the All Star Break. Iknow I've kind of beat the dead horse
on this a lot, but it'salways been to me that will determine where
this team is in the direction theyare going from this point forward. I
mean, if you really look atthe entire month of April, outside of

(34:37):
six games, the red should havea chance in all of them they start,
or excuse me, the entire monthof July. I don't know why
I said April. You look atthe entire month of July, outside of
six games, the Reds should befavored, and I would say most of
them. They start the month withthree in New York against the Yankees.

(35:00):
It's not a series. You havea lot of hope in ten game homestand
prior to the All Star Break, three against the Detroit Tigers, who now
have the same record as the Reds, Four against the Colorado Rockies, who
the Reds swept earlier this year,Three against the Miami Marlins, who have
one of the worst records in MajorLeague Baseball. Then you have the All
Star Break. You come out ofthat with the Washington Nationals, a team

(35:20):
that the Reds already beaten the seriesthis year and are a competitive team,
but are by no means National Leaguefavorites. Then you've got three in Atlanta
against the Braves. You would expectthe Reds to not be favored in any
of those games, and you havethree in Tampa against the Rays, who
are also struggling this year, beforeyou finish the season with three at home
against the Cubs, a team inwhich you've dominated. So to me,

(35:45):
I look around and I say, well, there's plenty of reasons to believe
that this team could have a goodmonth of July based on the competition that
they are going to be facing. And then I look back and I say,
well, this team has underperformed atpretty much every turn this year.
And I think the flip side ofthe argument that would actually make me feel

(36:07):
good about it is they're not verygood against good teams, but they're pretty
good against the teams they're supposed tobe. What are we going to learn
about this team during that stretch ismy question? What have we learned during
this current stretch. I don't knowthat things have really deviated from the norm
since the beginning of the year.A bunch of guys hurt, a bunch

(36:30):
of guys not playing well, notgood on the base pass, not good
on defense, not very smart phonelines still open five, three, seven,
four, nine, fifteen thirty. You'll hear from the Reds manager David
Bell. You also hear from StuartFairchild his explanation as to what happened on
Saturday, All that and more.Ahead, you're listening to Sincy three to

(36:52):
sixty on the Home of the BengalsESPN fifteen thirty eeen thirty. This one
goes out to Big Tone Tony.I hope you're listening Little angel Ridge for
you since he three sixty hour onebrought to you by a Skyline Chili.

(37:13):
I'm Austin Elmore ten minutes from rightnow, Jeff Carr locked on Reds and
Red's Talk Sports Illustrated. We'll stopby. He's a glass half full type
of guy. I'm gonna see ifhe really has a full glass when it
comes to this team, and seehow he's feeling about the Cincinnati Reds at
this point. In the meantime, let's go back to the phones and talk

(37:37):
to Mike in LA. What's up, Mike? Not bad? Do you
have a good weekend? I hada great weekend. Awesome, brother.
Looks like you got some better weatherout back home today, so that's good.
You got a break from that.Yeah, we get about a twenty
four hour break and then it comesback. I believe. Oh boy,

(38:00):
oh well, that's the Midwest listenerMilwaukee or no, I'm san Chicago.
It's all the Saint in that area. We often can I've been killing myself
to try to find either I'm doingsomething wrong or I just can't. I
can't find it. I'm trying tofind the stat or the rankings of the

(38:20):
ballparks that the most home runs arehitting, and I'm finding per game,
but I'm trying to find totals. And you're pretty good on the box.
If you get a chance sometime inthe next couple of days, can he
checks you can find it because it'sextening nuts. Yeah, I can.
I can see if that, ifthat, if I can find that,
Yeah, what what makes you thinkabout that? What? Why is that

(38:44):
something that you've been looking for?Well, well, I was just thinking
about the reds of the home runtotals. You know, Ellie Ellie and
Ellie's gallop thirteen fourteen, and skiersget nine and then everybody else has got
less. I was just thinking interms of they're always saying that it's it's
you know, great Americans, easyto hit home runs out of them.

(39:05):
But I've heard that, but I'venever seen it. In fact, in
a graph or in a chart,you know, So I don't know if
that's totally true or not. Yeah, make it sound you know. Yeah,
I'll have to look at it ifI If I see this correctly right
now, the Petco Park in SanDiego as the most Okay, see,

(39:31):
I could be wrong. I couldbe wrong. I'll double check it and
get back to you. Thanks forI appreciate it. And now I was
they were ranking the I don't knowwhat's about the reds unlost. I'm like
you, I'm lost. I don'thave an opinion. It's all negative with
a few shidbits of positivity thrown inthere. But I mean, I don't

(39:53):
want to bump everybody out was beingthis and negative, but it's hard not
to be. I'm with you,and it is hard and more and worse
than that is the apathy starts settingin, and that's even worse in the
pissed off. Yeah, so therewe go. But I was looking at
how they ranked these ballparks. Theyhad it. They took ten scouts from

(40:14):
around the various teams and they gottogether and they ranked stadiums from things like
amenites, location, I guess, food and stuff like that. Well,
you know Oaklham was the worst. That was a difference, and the second
worst was Tropicicana down in Tampa.Uh. Great American was twenty second.

(40:34):
They're comment on Great America was couldn'tthey have built it a little closer to
the river so you could have gotthe splash effect that they get at PNC
and that the Oracle and I hadnever thought of that. I wonder if
maybe maybe engineering wise, it justwasn't possible. Yeah, I'm sure they
considered it. Don't you think Iwould think they considered it. And then
the two bests were, well, let's see pet Coat seven Camden. I've

(41:00):
been there. That's a cool place. And then Wrigley was fifth, PNC
was forced, ben Way was third, Dodger second, and Oracle and Jensis
that was first. Mike, Igot your stat right here. The most
home runs in twenty twenty four havebeen hit at Minute Made Park in Houston,
with one hundred and seventeen, PetcoPark in San Diego right behind him

(41:20):
at one hundred and thirteen, andan even one hundred at Dodger Stadium that
is the third most. There havebeen eighty one home runs hit at Great
American Ballpark, this year, ashas there been a Globe Life Field and
American Family Field in Milwaukee. Theyall have eighty one home runs hit at
those ballparks this year. The leastis at Oracle Park in San Francisco,
just sixty homers. Wow. Nowsee that is really I would have screwed

(41:45):
that. I really appreciate you doingthat for me. No, probably,
but that's a big favorite. Thanksa lot of Austin, No problem,
man, you too, Thank you. Thanks Mike, take it easy.
All right. There we go,Mike in la little ballpark factoid for you.
What Jeff Carr thinks about that? We'll talk to him when we come
back. This has been our oneof Cincy three to sixty, brought to
you by Skyline Chile. More afterthe break with Jeff Carr. You're listening

(42:08):
to the Home of the Bengals,ESPN fifteen thirty. Help the planet with
a tip from This is Cincy Shirts. Cincy three sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati,
sponsored in part by Cincy Shirts.Cincy Shirts All Cincy, all Day.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati SportsStation. Hi, Hello, welcome

(42:30):
in our number two of Cincy threesixty. Right here on ESPN fifteen thirty.
My name is Austin Elmore, ridingsolo again today and tomorrow, Tony
back on Wednesday. In the meantime, we've got to sort out the Cincinnati
Reds and kind of figure out whereexactly this ball club is at now through
seventy seven or so games, theyare struggling and in last place in the

(42:52):
National League Central and here to talkabout it as the co host of the
Lockdown Reds podcast alongside Steve oss Offenbaker, and also covers the Reds for Sports
Illustrated's Reds Talk. His name isJeff Carr, and he's with us now.
Jeff, you are a glass halffull individual. Explain the twenty twenty
four Cincinnati Reds injuries. A littlebit of an effectiveness on some guys,

(43:20):
a little bit of regression on someplayers, but really, injuries has just
derailed this team from the beginning. But the hilarious part about it, Audie,
is where they are right now andthe stretch that they've been on here
recently, where it seems as thougheverybody gets in the scoring position and then
they stop. There's still only there'sstill less than three games behind a wildcard

(43:43):
spot. Because this National League willnot let them quit. This mediocre league
will not let the Cincinnati Reds fallout of this playoff rice very far,
and I don't believe that they're goingto get much further out of the races.
This season goes along drop two outof three over the weekend to the
Boston Red Sox. What was yourbiggest takeaway from that series? A Well,

(44:07):
I should have would have cut us. You know, you had some
base running errors where you know, part of it was an error, or
part of it was their over aggressionand they just got called out on it
or they got thrown out on itor something like that. But there were
a lot of just miscues that youlook at and you're like, man,
if this would have happened, orif he made the play he should have,

(44:28):
or if they could have done this, then everything would have been different.
And quite frankly, they had agolden opportunity that they decided to hand
back over to Boston on Saturday. And that's really the most annoying part is
that, yeah, Sunday, therewas a lot of things that went against
them, but their opportunity was onSaturday, and that's the one that they

(44:49):
missed. The most. How doyou explain them not being very good on
the base paths, not very gooddefensively, and appears to be a team
with relevanlatively low baseball IQ. It'sinteresting on the base paths part because there's
a statistic that I love looking aton Baseball Tavant called runner runs, and

(45:09):
it takes a lot of different thingsinto account that are not stolen bases.
It's like going first to third, going second to home, taking that extra
base whenever the percentages say it's probablynot the best idea. Well, the
Reds attempt to take that extra basewhenever the odds are against them, far

(45:30):
more than any other team. Theyalso get thrown out a decent amount,
and because of that they are rightin the middle of the road. The
statistic, if your number is positive, you're above average, and if your
number is negative, you're below average. They're at zero, so they're right
at average. Everything that they dowell on the bass paths is completely negated

(45:52):
by the plays where they get thrownout. So, as you know,
as much as it is a teamfullhilosophy, this might be something they do
have to rethink going forward, because, according to this statistic, if you
are thrown out trying to advance ona play where the percentages are against you,

(46:14):
then it takes four successful advances ofthat same kind to outweigh that one
negative action. Interesting. Yeah, and you look at more of the more
black and white stats. They aresecond in Major League Baseball and outs on
base they are leading Major League Baseball, or excuse me, second in Major

(46:37):
League Baseball with the times they've beenpicked off fourteen so far. The league
average right now is six. Theleague average for outs on the basis is
twenty one. They have thirty two. Do you feel like that's a philosophy
that should change based on the factthat there are guys on this team that
are getting significant innings that you didn'taccount for, the Stuart Fairchilds, the

(47:00):
Luke Mayley's, the so on andso forth, the different guys that are
playing more than you expected to.And should the philosophy change the way they
approach, whether it be their approachat the plate or their approach at the
base pass because they don't have afull team to work with. I think

(47:20):
it should in some cases, likethey really seem to stamp this team philosophy
on anyone who's on the bass pass. I mean, we've seen Jamer Candelario
take an extra base when we're kindof like, well, well, I
know he's not slow, but he'sdefinitely not fast. So when he takes
that extra base, who kind oflooks sideways at it and kind of like

(47:42):
you mentioned the guys that are playingthat we weren't counting on back in February,
it does feel like this was aphilosophy that was born out of the
Matt McClain's, the Noelvie Martes theworld being on this team. And while
we have just three more games withoutNoelvi Martes, I think that you're being
very optimistic, and I think thatthe team is being very optimistic when they
say that Matt McClain is going tobegin the rehab assignment in August. Like,

(48:07):
I still have a hard time countingon his return this season. So
I think that they really need tolook at this and say, all right,
Ellie's on base, Yeah he cando it. You know, maybe
Candelario, maybe Martini, we needto reassess a little bit because it does
feel like they're giving away a lotof outs. And you know, it's

(48:28):
funny because you also hear the pointof you know, David Bell saying this
sometimes where it's just like, youknow, we're not hitting necessarily well or
consistently with runners and scoring positions,so we're trying to get the base running
going to supplement that. But Ithink it's also making it worse in some
regards. Talking to Jeff Carr lockedon Reds and Red's Talk Sports illustrated,

(48:50):
how much of the downfall of thisteam, or I should say, the
struggles of this team, do youactually put on David Bell. Not a
lot. He can't help the guysthat are hurt, that aren't in the
lineup. I think that some ofhis decisions are a little weird when it
comes to sitting guys at different times. You know, apparently Tylers Stevenson was

(49:14):
going through something physically for the lastcouple of days, but it felt like
he was starting to heat up,and then he set for three days,
and it just seems as though it'sall, you know, counter productive to
some of the positions he's putting guysin. But for the most part,
I mean, he's got a betterpitching staff that this run deferential is actually
really good for the Reds. Accordingto the run differential, they should be

(49:36):
in above five hundred team, whichI think would surprise a lot of people.
But that's just kind of the waythat this team has been. It's
not been bad, but it's alsonot been good, and I don't know
that it's something I would put onDavid Bell just yet. But the other
problem with that is, though, when you look at David Bell, you
gotta ask, if you replace him, does anything change a whole lot in

(49:59):
the A that's no, because they'vegot this very collaborative philosophy to approaching coaching,
where you've got advisors and you've gotdifferent guys that are, you know,
the czars of pitching and of hitting. And I think if they're really
going to change something, they've gotto look at systemic changes that they probably
won't even be able to look atuntil the offseason. Yeah, that's interesting

(50:21):
because clearly there is some sort ofdisconnect. Even if you don't have great
players playing more frequently like this teamdoes at the moment, there still are
baseball IQ issues. There's defensive issuesthat make you scratch your head and be
like, how did they not knowthe parts of the game that are supposed
to be easy for a big leagueballplayer? It feels like to me,

(50:45):
they make them more difficult, andI can't help but look at coaching when
it comes to that, it's afair it's a fair philosophy. But my
other my counterpoint to that is,then why are the Chicago Cubs not good?
Because they went and they got oneof the best managers in baseball and
they added it to a pretty talentedroster. Like if you look at the

(51:05):
Cubs, there's a lot of playerson that team that you're like, man,
I'd kind of like to pill forthem and bring them over to the
Reds. But at the same time, they have completely underperformed. And they've
had some good performances from pitchers likeshowed to Emmanaga and Cody Bellinger has not
exactly been bad at the plate, but just consistently as a whole, their
team has not been good. Andthey're in the same spot basically, maybe

(51:28):
like a game ahead of where theReds are. And that's not what they
thought they were getting when they wentout and they poached Craig Council from the
Brewers, and they spent a lotof money to do it. I mean,
he's the highest paid manager in thehistory of the game, and that's
not really helped them. Yeah, and especially it's interesting considering what Milwaukee has

(51:49):
done this year in a very similarsituation to the Reds, with a lot
of guys out and injured, andprimarily when it comes to their pitching staff.
I understand in that this season isabout development and winning. Is it
possible for that to coexist? Itshould be. I think that there are

(52:12):
certain points where you see them tryingto really toe that line. You really
could have made the case on Saturdaythat Alexis ds could have pitched again.
I'm not necessarily as sure as towhy he was rested. It's not as
if he's been used like nearly asmuch as he was last year, and
he just pitched pretty well on FridayNight in the win to get the saved.

(52:34):
So maybe and maybe you could runhim out there again and see what
he's got. Instead, they gowith the tandem of Wilson and Sims.
That doesn't necessarily succeed, you know, But I think at the end of
the day, it's easy to secondguess certain things like that, but you
do see opportunities where it feels like, yeah, okay, maybe in a
year or two this team gets thatout or maybe in a year or two,

(52:59):
this team's scores on that advancement oryou know, whatever it is.
But right now, it just feelslike they are a step behind. And
I think that's why people tend toput that on the manager. But I
still look at the fact that thisteam is so young that there's certain things
that they don't know, that theydon't know that they're learning, and that's
where that's where the pains, thepains of the growing have come into this

(53:22):
season. Yeah, and it's particularlypainful for the fan base. I mean,
it's tough to be patient. Iget that, it's tough to be
told to be patient a lot. That's all we've heard for the last thirty
right right, you talk about yousaw you've seen some regression in some sense.
That I think is what concerns meis because I've been told to be

(53:45):
patient for so long, I startto question, can this team actually develop
these guys into stars and into awinning ball club. That's what kind of
keeps me up at night about thisteam. No, and that's fair because
think about what Dick Williams and thenleading into Nickkrawl, what they've really focused
on over the last five years andthat is rebuilding the development system with this

(54:09):
organization, because before Dick Williams, there were a lot of people, a
lot of different prospects, a lotof different coaches that left the red system
and went to other teams that saidthings like, yeah, we're doing things
at double A that they were tolddifferent at single A, and then when
they get to TRIPLEA, then theyget told something else completely different as well.
So by the time they get tothe majors, they've heard four different

(54:31):
opinions on the same thing, andso they're not exactly sure as to where
that's going. They've unified the voice, but that doesn't necessarily mean that everything
has changed overnight to the fact thatthis is a sort of organization that is
an expert development organization. I thinkthey've gotten a lot better and I think

(54:52):
that they're definitely in a better spotthan where they were three years ago.
But as we are developing this youngcore, as we are taking the talent
of La de la Cruz and andyou know, Matt McLean even always hurt,
but guys like that, and turningthem into the cornerstone of this team,
the team itself is also developed, being its development strategy. So it's

(55:15):
there's definitely that worry in the backof your mind. Yeah yeah. Talking
to Jeff Carr locked on Red's Podcastand Sports or Reds Talk on Sports Illustrated,
what do you think warrants a successfulseason? Because I know that the
National League still is very much wideopen with half the year left to go.

(55:36):
Is this something like do you feellike the Reds should be aggressive and
trying to get back to the playoffs. Do you think it's like, hey,
there is a lot of injury issues, let's see what happens next year.
What do you think is a successfulseason for the organization? I think
a wild card appearance is a successfulseason. Everything else is a failure.
I think yes, I think missingthe playoffs would be a fairure of a

(56:00):
season. And as much as theywould say this excuse for that excuse,
and we have talked to a lotabout the injuries, I still think this
team is enough talent and they haveenough talent in the farm system to be
aggressive this trade deadline. That ifthey sit on their hands and if they
stand pat and they don't do anything, or worse, if they start trading
people away, then it's going tobe very hard to explain for me because

(56:22):
this feels like the year and wesaid it at nauseum during the offseason where
the door opens, where the windowthe playoff window, not the door nobody
calls the playoff door. Playoff windowopens, and that's why everyone is so
frustrated, and even me to apoint where I'm you know, I try
to be as optimistic as I possiblycan, but at the same time,

(56:43):
I'm seeing these different trends that it'slike, this is what's going to keep
you out of the playoffs if youdon't fix it. This is, you
know, playing a lot of theJacob Hurdabeses and the Blake Duns and honestly
the Stuart Fairchild's. If they canmake a move that Stuart Fairchild doesn't have
to play four out of seven days, then that is the move that they
need to make. And I'm lookingat Brent Rooker over in Oakland, who's

(57:07):
just having a pretty awesome year fora team that isn't going anywhere, and
he's not going to be a partof their next core. They gotta go
get this guy, and that's theguy that I'm begging that the Reds just
go and trade for right now, because you add him to this outfield,
and then the lineup and the defensivealignment and all that stuff gets to move
in a way that is super positivefor the Reds contention future. But no,

(57:30):
I think it's wild card. It'smake the playoffs, and they should
one hundred percent be aggressive at thistrade deadline and be a buyer. Noel
V. Marte is struggling right nowin Triple A. He's supposed to be
back here in a couple of days. What do you make from what you've
heard of his performances down there?I think O for his last twenty hitting

(57:52):
one forty three at Triple A.And is it somebody that the red should
bring up right away or do youthink they should give him some more time.
I think that it's probably a sixtyforty. They're just looking to see,
you know, how healthy is he? Is he getting into a groove?
Is he making good mechanical decisions asopposed to what his performances actually are.

(58:13):
There is a couple of concerning thingswith his performances though, that even
go beyond the numbers you said,Like he has no walks whatsoever since beginning
his rehab stent, and he's beenhitting the ball on the ground fifty nine
percent of the time. So there'stwo things right there that you look at
and you're like, Okay, isthis just him getting his swing back,

(58:35):
getting back into the groove of things, or is this something to be concerned
about. And I tend to believethat once he is ready to go,
once it's gain eighty one and theReds can bring him up, they're gonna
bring him up and let him figurethis thing out at the major league level
because they're better with him on theteam than not. But at the same
time, like, you cannot ignorewhat he's done in TRIPAA, but I

(58:58):
still think that they put a littlebit more or wait on just how he
is reacting to playing every day ina competitive environment versus the numbers that he's
actually putting on the paper. Ifthere has been one positive above all others
so far this season, it's beenthe pitching and primarily the step forward that
Nick Lodolo and Hunter Green seem tohave taken. What are your thoughts on

(59:22):
that sort of development from those twoguys and what that could mean for the
rest of the pitching staff over thenext couple of months and the next couple
of years. That has been absolutelyphenomenal. I think it's the reason that
most people from the outside looking inlook at Cincinnati and say this could be
a very dangerous team. I mean, think about the fact if they make
a wildcard series that is best ofthree, then you're looking at Lodolo and

(59:46):
Green in your first two games. You've got a chance to sweep the first
two games and get out of awildcard and get into the divisional series no
matter who you're playing. Because thoseguys can shut down lineups. We've seen
it with multiple different teams now.And the reason that they've both done that
has been kind of a step pastwhat I expected them to do this year.

(01:00:07):
All I expected from Lodola was tostay healthy and have a healthy year
and just get through the season withoutany sort of setbacks. I mean,
there's a possibility of, you know, the the load management injuries as it
were, that where maybe he's gota sore back and he misses two starts
or something like that. But outsideof that, don't miss long periods of

(01:00:29):
time with injuries like he had lastyear, where I know they said the
word for what the leg issue was, but it seems like a word,
you know, the stress reaction outoutside of that was like, Okay,
this all seems very concerning. Butthere's been no mention of that whatsoever hampering
him this year, and that's beengreat. But he takes a step further

(01:00:50):
and adds a change up that's aweapon. I didn't expect that at all
from him like that. That's anotherlevel of development that is so key to
a guy going from a pitcher toan ace and I love seeing that.
And the same for Hunter Green. His splitter has really begun to take the
form of just his third pitch thathe can rely on instead of just this

(01:01:14):
thing that he can show to otherhitters to let them know that there is
a third pitch that he might throwonce in a while. He can at
least drop that in there to geta swing of miss or to get a
weak ground ball and move on tothe next batter. I was expecting fastball,
you know, control and command thisseason, but he's taking that a
step further into the splitter as well. And that's why it's been so fun

(01:01:35):
to watch these guys pitch this year. I just wish they'd give him any
story. Hunter Green is to pitchtomorrow against the Pirates, and I don't
think the Pirates have scored or theReds have scored a run against the Pirates
when he's been on the mound sincehe got caught up a couple of years.
It's been a long time. Yeah. I saw the stat a couple
of a week or so ago.Last time he pitched great against the Pirates.

(01:01:57):
Will be something to keep an eyeout on. Jeff, thank you
for your time follow along locked onRed's podcast, Red's Talk on Sports Illustrated.
Jeff, thanks so much, man, take it easy, Absolutely awesome.
Thanks and gored all right. Thatis Jeff Carr. You can follow
him as well at Jeff three F'scar two rs on Twitter. H Glass
half fool. But you could tellthat's a guy he's seen some stuff.

(01:02:22):
Doesn't feel great about the ball club. Interesting stuff. You will hear from
David Bell, Stuart Fairchild and others. Before the end of the show.
You also hear from the head coachof FC Cincinnati, Pat Noonan after their
loss to New England over the weekend, and Moegger at two forty five a
head of his show this afternoon fromthree to six. This is Cincy three

(01:02:43):

(01:03:25):

We play it at this time.We play all of them, most
of them, most of the time, at this time, every single day.

(01:03:45):
So without further ado, let's getto it. Bengals Pro Shop the
number nine backless Burrow jerseys. Joeis bringing sexy back to pay Court cast.
There you go. How about thatBengals Pro Shop getting backless number nine

(01:04:05):
jerseys. That'd be funny if sincethe shirts or anybody else does Burrow backless
number nine jerseys? I want oh? Okay, all right, she wants
ten percent. That's Pam, Ibelieve. Okay. If hawk By the

(01:04:27):
way, Burrow just posted on Instagramsome photos from Paris Fashion Week with Vogue.
He seems to be living fine.If Hawktua is a gold standard,
the reds are, Oh man,I've never seen It's been quite some time

(01:04:53):
since the Internet has been dominated bya meme like hawkta Hello. This is
former as I did Ronaldrie again andwell, there's just nothing better in sports
than a Stanley Cup Game seven. You get tension, tempers, physicality,
name calling, cheap shots, fightsand more. Yeah, all the things

(01:05:15):
I enjoy in a good presidential election. I heard them talking about on the
radio this morning that the presidential electionon Thursday. They're like in a studio
and they have like special microphones thatcut off and like all the lessons they
had to learn from the last timearound. It's so funny. The presidential
elections are one of the funniest thingsthat has ever happened. God bless them.

(01:05:41):
Hey, Audie, you know whenyou're on a side street and you're
trying to turn left across a reallybusy street, yes, say a four
lane road or whatever, and youget all excited and you're about ready to
gun it, and here comes acar out of nowhere that's like the reds
Man. You know, you getall, you think you're gonna you think
they're gonna win a series, youthink they're gonna get back to five hundred,

(01:06:04):
and then something comes out and justroams it all. Yeah, and
you're just sitting there for another threeand a half minutes waiting for traffic to
clear. Yeah, you start thinkingabout running out into traffic. Yeah,
I hear you, Jim, that'sa good metaphor. By the way,
I'm at presidential debates, not elections. Debates are one of the funniest things
humans have ever done. Hey,Austin Market from the grove. Oh no,

(01:06:27):
Marcus, I do not want tosee Will Benson play another game this
season. He is clearly timed outon his project. So Ronnie ron representing
the Natty out in Zona, theBenson project need to be officially closed.
I don't know what the hell thatthrow was from Stewie no arm, but

(01:06:48):
that was just absolutely effortless. Itlooked like Stewie frustrating Stewie' short arms.
It felt like you didn't know thesituation and you'll hear his explanation late.
That didn't really help him out atall either. And there was a time
earlier this year where he got inthe way of somebody who was supposed to

(01:07:09):
be making a catch to throw intothe infield. And there was a time
earlier this year he didn't seem toknow how many outs there were. Ough,
Autie, just like you holding downthe fort there by yourself. How
about Abbot given the fans pizza basicallysingle handedly on Friday night? Yeah?
Love that best part about the Redsis getting those pizzas on Friday. Resting

(01:07:30):
that they're a bunch of stinkers. You know, they might have to start
wearing the City Connects uniforms more frequentlybecause they seemed to like play better.
I don't know, somebody might haveto look up the record of them in
those jerseys, but it feels likethey're so much better when they wear those.
Hey, Auti, Kevin or Kentekihere, can you give a shout
out to my son kJ What atough little boy. Before the game began

(01:07:55):
Saturday, he took a straight baseballto ricocheted off the rail and to the
ankle. Who Okay, after that, no we didn't get the ball did
a little bit later on with thatheat that was almost as hot as s
comer Johansson. The poor fella gotheat exaustly, even though we were drinking
our water, but he powered throughboth. We made a tony pink irish
exit got him home. He's finenow. Fashion I know nothing about it,

(01:08:15):
but I don't know about that.Back on sumber Paro was wearing Kevin
shout out to kJ. Hope Kj'sfeeling better. I remember I went to
a game fourth of July two thousandand three. It was the first season
at Great American Ballpark, and Iwent with my mom and my dad,
and I remember it being so hotwe left. I don't like the memory

(01:08:38):
is kind of fuzzy, but Ido remember it being so hot that we
left the game, So certainly somethingI've been through before. Kevin, hope
kj's feeling good, and you'll becareful out there. I saw I was,
you know, talking is important.I saw a woman take a Willie
Mopania batting practice home run right offthe cheekbone uns that scarred me as a

(01:09:01):
child. Austin is Johnny here?Happy recovery Monday? Well, I've got
enough Joe Burrow wearing sexy outfit photosto put on the back of my wallpaper
every day. Oh, don't youstart hating folks. You know that man
is gorgeous. That being said,Reds training camp. How many weeks away
are we oftin? I mean daysaway? Are we like twenty? Like?

(01:09:25):
Hurry on? Yeah, we're donewith the Reds? Who everybody for
like twenty eight days away? Thirtydays away, something like that. Johnny,
I've kind of been waiting to hearfrom you because there was a guy
who played for the Cleveland Browns nameLonnie. Lonnie Phelps was drunk driving and
ran his car into a building andthen got cut by the Browns. And
then I found out he was fromMount Healthy. So I was waiting for

(01:09:48):
Johnny from Mount Healthy to comment onLonnie from Mount Healthy. And I haven't
heard anything. Yeah, I'm gonnawatch a little Game seven of hockey for
the hockey game of the year withthe Reds. It's just a broken record
with the bad defense and the badbass running and maybe, like I said,

(01:10:11):
some of that comes on David Bell, Baltimore was the hottest team in
baseball. My Astros just killed himthree straight games. I know the Astros
all of a sudden are heating up. They've won five or six in a
row. Watch out for his Astros. Have we heard from the talkback press?
Since the Mount Healthy grad who playsfor the Browns was from the team

(01:10:33):
for a little higgs down in KeyWest, maybe he was listening to the
Friday drink recommendations a little bit tooclosely. What say you, Johnny?
Yeah, it's a good you know, it's funny me and Jeff are on
the same page. I didn't evenlook at that talk back before I played
it, but yeah, I meanyou would think there's gonna be some sort
of comment at some point from theadministration, maybe trying to say that they're

(01:10:54):
not responsible. Friends got batch ofpeople into that either, turning out showing
up those games over the week endof the sweltering heat. But I digress.
The FC match was really frustrating. The team looked tired, and they
looked slow, They were worn out, and the cards and the fouls were

(01:11:16):
outrageous. Do you attribute that tothem be frustrated and tired poor officiating for
both, Yeah, I'd say it'sprobably a combination of everything. In fact,
they had three games in eight days. They've just dealt with one of
their best players being injured for theforeseeable future. One of their other best
players is not there. Yeah,I would just say it was kind of

(01:11:36):
a culmination of everything, and thenthe heat on top of it just turned
in one of their most lack lacks, lackluster performances, he said, stuttering.
Unbelievable. Hey, Austin Ken fromthe les here, I can't believe.
I set in ninety five degree heatin the sun most of the game

(01:11:59):
and witnessed the garbage that I witnessedon Saturday. Come on, Ridge,
you don't want to get kidden fromLittle X pissed off. I'm starting to
get a little disillusion So go Ridgs, go Bengals, and go Big Blue
can hang with them, Buddy, stay strong. You've been doing this for
a long time watching this team stink. You got it. One step forward

(01:12:21):
and two steps back. That isyour Cincinnati Redzy's last few series. You
win an opener, it's real nice, feel good about the series. Maybe
we'll get one. Yeah. No, they poop the bed again and again
and again. We had a gamerecently with five errors. We had one
where two guys were picked off firstbase in Chicago. I think somehow still

(01:12:41):
won that game. First and third, went out two innings in a row
on Saturday, couldn't score. GladJeff Carr still optimistic? Make it makes
sense. Yeah, that's why Ihad Jeff on just provide a little bit
of positivity. Love Jeff. Justlike everybody else, I'm exhausted by the
Red and I'm just waiting for footballat this point. Baby help me,

(01:13:05):
job nine Kenoby. Oh that's right, joby nine, Kenobi. He's our
only hope. All right, therewe go, joby nine Kenoby. All
right, Hey, Austin, happyMonday. If it's too late to get
my talk back in. But thisis talkback matters guy, and I guess,
uh, missus Burrow. We youknow the Jets head Broadway Joe.

(01:13:30):
Now we've got runway Joe. Right. So, I mean, at least
he's not doing anything physically except forwalking. But is that his new second
career or yeah? I mean thereare worse hobbies to have. So I'm
okay with him walking down runways. Now if he starts wearing you know,

(01:13:54):
heels or something where he might tripand fall and get hurt, then I've
got a problem. But you know, just wearing a suit with no back
go ahead, Joe. Jeff Carrjust said there was a lot of if
we did this or if that happenedin the Red Sox and Brewers series.
The problem is that's been the mottofor this franchise for my thirty plus years

(01:14:15):
of life of watching it, andI'm so tired of hearing about injuries and
youth. Every team deals with thatstuff, with that stuff, and some
of them are still good. AndI don't know if Jeff Carr is on
the Reds payroll, but he definitelyshould be for a PR guy. He's
not on their payroll, but youknow, he does see the world a

(01:14:36):
little bit differently, which is whyI like having him on to kind of
balance out the frustrations. But Icertainly feel you, and I know you're
not alone, Hey, Austin feelingyour frustration on the Reds Man. There's
two things that I would say tohopefully keep the faith. One is that
they still have a positive run differential, which is a very important gauge I

(01:14:56):
think about as far as where theyshould be. And two, I really
think that that ten game homestand rightbefore the All Star break is really the
the crux. They do well, get over five hundred ward in the All
Star break, make a move ortwo for the stretch. If not,
I would sell off a couple ofvet pieces. Yeah, I think we're
pretty much in the same same mindsetthere. To be honest with you,
it's just I don't keep talking aboutthat stretch. But to me, that's

(01:15:20):
just that's gonna tell you everything youneed to know about this team. What's
up? Boddy is KD from Middletown. This is a little off topic,
but I know you're a bluckeys man. Okay. Jeremiah Smith, that freshman
receiver, he's a doll man.He goes up and gets it built like
a machine. He's like a youngJulio Jones out there on the field.

(01:15:44):
Yes, I'll tell you what. He's gonna be the next great receiver in
college football. He's gonna be adoll Boddie, a doll Jeremiah Smid.
Yeah, ready, Yeah, Iknow who he is. I'm very well
aware. I'm excited about him.I know people get mad when we talk
about the Buckeyes, but wide receiver, you up there, DBU up there,
no excuses. Listen, if theylose to Michigan again this year.

(01:16:08):
If they don't win the National Championship, I'm not gonna be a pleasant person
to be around. Luke Blima.I was at the ball game yesterday and
other than me and Muggy as allhell, it was frustrating as all hell.
Three walks that should have been strikeoutsdefinitely changed the game. Ladolo wasn't
at his best, but man, they gotta do something about Will Benson.

(01:16:30):
A dude can't hit a fastball.Every major league player can hit a fastball.
Yeah, I mean, I'm noexpert, but Will Benson just kind
of strikes me as a guy who'sgot this. He's just a tall,
lanky player with a long swing that'sgot a hole in it, and when
he makes contact great, he usuallyhits the ball hard and far, but

(01:16:53):
the contact is just not happening, and the strikeouts are top five in Major
League Baseball, as is Elie dayla Cruz, who has dealt with that
in some times himself. By theway, Ellie looking good from the right
handed side of the batter's box.I don't know if I had said that
earlier. Some really good swings fromthat side of the box, but yeah,
and you know Blake Dunn, whowas up here earlier this year,

(01:17:14):
is on the injured list right nowin Louisville with face laceration. Connor Caple
was dfaid. I don't know exactlyif there's a close solution for that,
And tonight I would imagine your youroutfield is gonna be steer, Friedel and
fair Child since they're going up againstanother left hander, so you probably won't

(01:17:35):
see Benson or Freely tonight. Butyeah, it's just it's hard to it's
hard to make sense of continuing toput Will Benson out there. I'm gonna
root like crazy for the Reds, but it's over, God bless it's over.
They just don't have it. Theydon't have it. If they make

(01:17:55):
it, I'll be thrilled and I'llbe there. But come on, man,
where are the bank? The Bengalsare all over the world right now.
I know there's some of them inHawaii, there's some in Paris.
I know Mike Hilton posted earlier he'sin Greece. T Higgins was in Cincinnati
this weekend, so they're all overthe place. Hello, this is Double
Dipper Gepper Como Wheel. Regarding Lonniefrom Mount Healthy I don't hold Johnny from

(01:18:18):
Mount Healthy anymore responsible for him asI did Jimmy Carter and his brother Billy
Carter and all his drinking excapades. You got more excuses for Johnny than Carter's
got liver pills? Is that howthe old joke used to go? Austin
George from the Valley? What up, George? You mean when when they
lose to Michigan? Yeah? Shouldhave you know, I should have probably

(01:18:40):
vetted that one, kind of setmyself up for George. There, George,
good to hear your voice. Gladto know you're still listening. Well,
take a break, we'll be back. That was talkback. This is
since He three to sixty, broughtto you by Cincy Shirts, Home of

Austin Elmore Tony back on Wednesday.Coming up at the top of the hour,
we'll talk a little FC Cincinnati, see what happened in their game over
the weekend. You'll also hear lateron from David Bell and Stewart Fairchild.
Moecker will be on the show aswell. But right now, we got

(01:19:26):
to get caught up. We gottaget back on time, back on the
clock. Phone lines are open restof the way. Five point three seven

the show right here on Cincy.Three to sixty, brought to you by
Cincy Shirts on the Home of theBengals Cincinnati is ESPN fifteen thirty. The

(01:19:53):
pickup truck question to me on mysixty continues on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports
Station. Welcome back since he threesixty ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Austin Elmore
with you for the next hour.In change. Phone lines are open five

(01:20:15):
one three, seven four nine, fifteen thirty. Let's go to the phone
lines. Let's go to Jamestown,Kentucky, where Ken is standing by.
What's up, Ken, what's onyour mind? Well, I've been listening
for about the last hour at theeverybody moaning the fate of the Cincinnati Reds
and where they are. I thinkit was perfectly predictable the first year with

(01:20:36):
half the lineup was injured. SoI think you've got to look at some
other things at this baseball team, and I don't I think some of your
younger viewers instantly my first announcer withWaite Hoye, the first one I listened
to, pretty good one. Yeah, well, everybody's pretty much younger.
And I look at I listened tothe impatience that I that I hear,

(01:21:00):
and and your listeners are not lookingfor the real baseball here. When you
put the statistics of Elida da Cruzup at this time of his career,
what do you see? He's alwayscompared to the probably the top ten players
in the history of the game.So why are we not saying, Hey,

(01:21:25):
one of these days I'm going tobe able to tell my grandson or
granddaughter I got to see Eli deda Cruz, Elie D'Cruz and his and
his uh start in Make league baseball. And I think we're all excited about
that possibility. But I can't.I can't sit here and evaluate and talk
about and be excited about the futurewhen it's never really panned out In the

(01:21:46):
past. I can only live inthe right now. I mean, if
you had Weight Hoyt as your broadcastergrowing up, you've seen your team win
a couple of world championships. Ihave never seen that. I don't have
anything to go off of, andI can't sit around and always talk about
what might be happening in the future. I can only talk about what's happening
now and acknowledge that there's a lotof room for growth for Allie. I

(01:22:10):
can't agree with I can't agree withyou more, but don't overlook what's happening.
You could be watching baseball history.Yeah, you be watching baseball history.
Yeah, I hear you, onehundred percent. Anything else can because
the more you watch, the moreyou have an opportunity to see what like
something like what happened in nineteen ninetyYeah. I mean, you know,

(01:22:31):
you just got to watch and hopethat's it. I'm a half full glass
kind of guy, so I agreewith your buddy Joe Well. Ken,
thank you for the phone call.I appreciate it. I appreciate your perspective.
You're surely welcome take care of Yeah, you too, And Ken's right
that I appreciate Ellie day la Cruz. I love watching him play. He
is one of those guys where youwill stop in your tracks and watch the

(01:22:55):
TV to see him taking that bat. He's a reason you buy ticket to
watch. My problem is not withEllie de la Cruz. My problem is
with the situation surrounding him. Yes, I have been frustrated at times by
Ellie's inexperience and errors and issues, but I also know that is part of

(01:23:15):
life with Ellie de la Cruz.I look at the team as a whole,
in the organization as a whole, and I worry about its ability to
turn what is a really good thinginto a great thing. That's my fear.
That's what I'm worried about. Let'sgo to Florence where Mark is standing
by. What's up, Mark,Hey, I just wanted to chop me

(01:23:41):
in on the topic today. Youknow the rig. Yeah. My my
issue is with the organization. I'vesaid this before. I think they should
have went and grabbed somebody out ofeither Houston's or Chicago's organization that was there,
that saw that rebuild, that waslike an up and coming GM and

(01:24:03):
waiting and brought them into this organizationso they could have somebody in place that
seeing a rebuild a successful one andthen try to try to mimic mimic it
that way, because after what fromwhat I'm seeing this year and what I

(01:24:25):
saw last year and in the previousyears, I'm starting to wonder if this
regime really know what they're doing, you know, going going all the way
down to the minor league system andcoming up. I'm wondering because when we're
seeing too many players come up andwe don't see the results. I mean,

(01:24:45):
you can't depend on trading and gettingother teams players, you can't depend
on signing free agents. You gotto develop your own superstars, and this
organization seemed to struggle to do that. I mean what I mean, am
all based on that? No,I don't. I don't think that you're
necessarily off base. I mean Ido think that I really didn't try to

(01:25:11):
evaluate anything until last year, becausein twenty twenty two, Nick Crawls,
still fresh on the job, theytear the team down to the studs,
they lose one hundred games, andthen they build up from there and there's
been a lot of positive since then, and there's still a lot of positive
in the minor league system. Ithink it's fair to wonder can they get
the most out of this group.I think they're in a much much better

(01:25:32):
spot than they were three or fourfive years ago. It's just about being
able to execute that. I'm notready to give up on who they are
and the organization that they've built.I just have a question about the sustainability
in the development in the long run, and I'm waiting to be proven right
or wrong about that. Hopefully I'mproven right or proven wrong. Oh okay,

(01:25:56):
let me make an early day acruise point. This will probably never
happen, but if you could summonsDave Winfield to help him on his ending,
especially when he left hand had eventhough Dave Winfield got it right,
The reason I'm make in that comparisonis Dave Winfield was a basketball player in

(01:26:18):
college and I basically saw his wholecareer. He was a tall, long
guy. But if you ever watchold footage jumping, when he would get
in his baton stands, he wassquat down a little bit. And if
you notice with Ellie when he's batonleft hand and he stands kind of a

(01:26:40):
little upright, I think he needsto squat down a little bit to get
to those those pitches. That's moving, those curve balls, those breaking balls.
You remember our Steene's a keno.He had that straight up open Batton
stands, and when pitchers start throwinghim a lot of breaking balls, he
couldn't hit him. So I thinkthat's a big We're never gonna see the

(01:27:05):
type of player that we think hecould be until he adjust his batting stands
so he could start getting to thosepitches. Can I tell you? Can
I can I tell you something aboutEllie de la Cruz. This year he
has one hundred fewer plate appearances thanhe did last year. He has the

(01:27:27):
same number of home runs, morestolen bases, a better batting average,
a better on base percentage, abetter slugging percentage, and a better ops
He is on pace to destroy hisaverages from last year. He is having
a great season offensively. Yes,he strikes out too much, doesn't make
enough contact. But I'm not reallyworried about Ellie de la Cruz as a

(01:27:49):
hitter right now, Okay you not, Okay, you're not worry Well,
I'm I'm not worried about him asa right handed hitter. I think he
can I think he could do Okay, I'm kind of worried about him as
a left handed hitter when he facesreal good pictures that know that that got
pitches, that balls, that moves, and he struggles to hit that down

(01:28:12):
in there and pitch and he strugglesto hit that down and the way.
You know, pitches that drop offthe plate either down and the end or
down in the way. He strugglesat that, and see, I want
to see him hit three hundred.Yeah, well, there's there's only a
few guys in Major League Baseball thatdo that. Mark, I'm out of
time. In an ideal world, yes, I would love Ellie Daily Cruz

(01:28:32):
to hit for three hundred. Thatbaseball player is dying in today's dan age.
There's not going to be many ofthem left. Let's talk a little
FC Cincinnati when we get back.I'm way laid for a break. Since

Fairchild coming up as we put awrap on the Reds weekend, losing another

(01:29:39):
series to the Boston Red Sox.They have not won a series since the
beginning of June, when they werein Chicago to take on the Cubs.
They are at home tonight for athree game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Carson Spires gets the start. He'llgo up against a left hander in Bailey
Falter. We'll keep you updated.I doubt we will get a lineup between

(01:29:59):
now and the end of the show, we know, but we certainly will
talk about that tomorrow. As Imentioned earlier, it is It's a great
weekend if you're from Boston and youmade the summer trip to Cincinnati to see
the Red Sox on the road andcheck out the New England Revolution. Because
they upset FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadiumon Saturday night. It felt like it

(01:30:20):
was just a culmination of a lotof things for FC Cincinnati. Number one,
the sweltering heat coupled with the factthat they've played three games in eight
days or whatever it was. Youhad lost Matt Mioska, Miles Robinson is
not there, and it just feltlike a lot for f C Cincinnati,
and it kind of boiled over onSaturday against New England. Gave up a

(01:30:44):
goal in the twenty first minute togo down one nil, and again twenty
minutes later in the forty first minuteto go down two nil going into the
half, and in some of themetrics you would think FC Cincinnati was the
team that won. They controlled possessionfifty five to forty four. They had
twenty one shots to New England's ten, but New England had five shots on

(01:31:08):
goal. Just four of those twentyone shots for FC Cincinnati were on target.
They were a more accurate passing team, completing eighty one percent of their
passes. They had nine corners toNew England's three. There's a lot of
different stats that would suggest that FCCincinnati out played New England, even when

(01:31:29):
you look at expected goals FC onepoint six compared to New England zero point
six. So there's a lot ofreasons to think okay, just looking at
it. On paper, FC Cincinnatiwere the better team, but the big
discrepancy came on fouls. Nineteen fouls. FC Cincinnati committed to New England just
nine, including five yellow cards anda red card that saw Obi Wobodo sent

(01:31:55):
off in FC playing with ten menfor a good chunk of the game.
Woboedo came off in the sixty ninthminute and so they played the last twenty
with just ten men. And thenright at the beginning of stoppage time,
Nick Hagland goes down and what wecome to find out is a broken fibula,

(01:32:15):
so he is out for the foreseeablefuture. This we know that position
is already thin with Miosga injured lastweek, Robinson not here, Haglin was
the guy that they were counting onto step up and kind of be the
veteran on that back line. Thisteam has given up twelve goals in their
last five games. This was anissue last year that they spent a lot

(01:32:36):
of time, money resources in shoringup this season being able to beat teams
like Miami, being able to beatteams like Columbus, and have the ability
to score with Luciano Acosta, LucaErazino and so many others at the top.
Aaron Bupenza made his return, soall these other guys on paper or

(01:33:00):
Cincinnati was really feeling good. Andthey're still just two points back of Miami
and they've played one fewer game thanMiami and they play Miami in a couple
of weeks. This season is notover after yesterday, but it's just a
tough run right now for Cincinnati asthey try to figure out what's going to
come moving forward for this team, especially when you think about the summer transfer

(01:33:24):
window, and we heard Pat Nowtontalk about this last week that they're going
to look at all the options theycan. This is a team that has
not made any bones about it.They are trying to win MLS Cup.
The rumors around Weston McKinney would suggestthe exact same thing. They are trying
to win MLS Cup. And ifthey are able to do something like that

(01:33:44):
and by that, I mean, bring in somebody that can shore up that
back line until who knows what andwhoever comes back and whatever the timetable is
and Robinson comes back and all that. It would signal that the expectation has
not changed and this team is stillvery much trying to win it. Because
they are still very much in theconversation in the Eastern Conference. I wouldn't
expect any of that to change. But tough result nonetheless for f C Cincinnati.

(01:34:11):
They will hit the road coming upthis weekend and play Dallas. But
this was Pat Noonan, the headcoach of f C Cincinnati, meeting with
the media after the game on Saturday. It was a tough night for us
for a lot of reasons. ButI just thank the players for, you
know, the effort that they gavetonight. I know you hear that a

(01:34:34):
lot, especially when things don't goyour way. But for the third game
in eight days, what some ofthose guys did physically throughout the week and
to push themselves tonight down a coupleof goals and a man and then two
men, it speaks to their character. That's that's the positive that comes out
of this. So I thank themfor that. Going off of that,

(01:34:59):
Pat, would you put kind ofjust exhaustion from this week down to the
way the first half played out? That was part of it. You know,
there was also simple things that wedidn't get right that that caused,
you know, a lack of rhythmand maybe a lack of energy and in
the stadium, you know, wedidn't give them much to to cheer about

(01:35:21):
in that first forty five. Sobut it starts with me. I don't
think that that was a version ofour group that we should have seen tonight.
So I can't blame those guys foranything. And uh, I know
injuries have been a constant thing.I know it's not any of our favorite

(01:35:43):
subjects. But Nick went off late, do yeah, any idea what's up
there? Yeah, he broke hisfibula, so he's going to be out
a couple months. So that's that'sa tough one for uh, for the
group obviously for for Nick first andforemost, it's it's tough to see a
key piece UH go down like that. And obviously the news wasn't great.

(01:36:04):
So yeah, timeline all that,I don't know. Wow, I guess
just the second half you guys lookedlike I mean, you made some changes,
guys came out. It seemed likethere was a lot of energy.

(01:36:26):
What what do you think was thedifference in what you saw in that second
half compared to the beginning. Yeah, look, it was to try to
get some fresh legs and to createsome different things in terms of on the
ball stuff. It's it's unfair touh, it's in a lot of ways
to alvis and and Dotto and Kevin, you know, I know, fatigue

(01:36:49):
a little bit more for Kevin atthe end of the week. You know,
the other two could have stayed on, and there was thoughts about should
we have taken guys that didn't havethe legs that maybe those two you had,
But you know, those ended upbeing the decisions. And a lot
of it with getting Nick in themiddle was to get DeAndre and Ian advancing
with the ball. I didn't thinkin the first half we we were able

(01:37:11):
to take the space in an efficientway to then open up different ways of
breaking pressure because it was too predictablein the first forty five. And then
but I thought, you know, came in and did a good job.
Sergio obviously, you know, workedhis tail off and created some decent moments
but those two were limited with playingwith you know, eleven to eleven in

(01:37:33):
terms of the impact that they couldhave as well as Nick. So yeah,
we could have taken out other guysbecause the performances weren't great, but
that was that was the idea there. Uh, you guys have seen some
issues getting beat down the wings lately. Is there anything that you would attribute

(01:37:57):
to or anything that you feel likeneeds a change in that regard? Is
that something you you've noticed. No, we'll look at the ways of working
seedon. You know, on thesecond goal, it's a quick free kick
and for some reason we can't getorganized quick enough to to deal with the
cross and then I know, youknow, DeAndre loses his footing there,

(01:38:19):
so I think he's maybe in abetter position to challenge it if he doesn't
lose his feet. But that that'spretty basic in terms of being able to
prevent that. You know, withthe first goal, I think we can
release off the line to deal withVaroni and then maybe we over commit and
allowing to get on his stronger footand so you know, that's the details

(01:38:42):
of knowing what what type of playeryou're closing down. So yeah, we'll
look at it. And and andtry to, you know, get better
in terms of the defensive side ofthe ball, because that's clearly been a
challenge for us. Uh Pat Emilisagets his first goal for the club and
the goal, what did you thinkof his performance on the whole and what
he's brought to the group since he'sarrived. But I thought he had a

(01:39:03):
strong performance, you know, asidefrom the goal. I thought with the
ball, he's got good composure, finds, I think the right passes in
most moments, pushed himself really hardfrom a physical standpoint, because he's hasn't
had that that many minutes to thispoint. So it was good to see

(01:39:25):
him get on the score sheet. But you know, that was a reward
of everything that's kind of led upto it. But I thought, I
think he's done a really good jobfor our group, and I thought he
was strong again tonight. Hey,Pat, this team has been resilient through
a lot of things. Obviously you'vebeen here for a while suffering the injuries

(01:39:46):
that this team has seen, withme Osga now Hagling. Tonight, what
was the mood of the team postgame, not just the loss, but
seeing a guy that's such a greatguy, a veteran guy like Nick Hagland
go down as expected. He's akey piece on and off the field.
He's a leader of our group. So on top of the defeat that you
know, news is tough for ourgroup because like I said, Nick's important

(01:40:13):
and then he'll be off the fieldfor a stretch of time here, So
okay, I feel sorry for ourselves. We got to keep going. But
that is Pat Noonan, the headcoach of FC Cincinnati after their loss UH
this weekend to New England FC Backin action this Saturday night at FC Dallas.

Looking forward to talking to the bigfella. I'm sure he's got thoughts on

(01:42:15):
all that has happened over the lastcouple of weeks. And uh, looking
forward to that Moegger coming up inabout twenty minutes from right now. Let's
put the cap on the reds andphone lines are still open. Five one,
three, seven, four, nine, fifteen point thirty. Your reaction
to the Reds over the weekend.UH. Saturday's game a winnable game,

(01:42:39):
up three to zero, they endup losing four to three. Uh.
Not the most important play of thegame, but a play that it felt
like hurt the Reds more than ithelped, obviously, was Stuart Fairchild catching
the ball on left field and providinga less than ideal I guess you could
say throw home on the sacrifice fly. And I think the way it looked,

(01:43:03):
it just wasn't a very good throw. It didn't look like he set
himself up to catch and throw itvery well. It didn't look like there
was a ton of effort put intothe throw. Stuart Fairchild was asked about
that uh after the game. Herewas his response. When I caught the

(01:43:26):
ball, I looked up and Ididn't have a good view of Meilee cana
Lario was like rating my vision,So I didn't like, I couldn't,
you know, see exactly where mytarget was, So I kind of threw
it in the vicinity of, youknow, where I thought homeplate was without
really having a good, you know, firm visual grasp on where the ball
needed to go. So I mean, I think that's that's, you know,

(01:43:48):
the reason that I didn't get offmy best both there. That's a
BS excuse. I mean, youcould just say I screwed up, I
didn't throw make a good throw.I mean, you know where home plate
is. You're a major league baseballplayer. There is literally a line that
leads from home plate to the walland the foul pole. The third baseman

(01:44:12):
is standing on third base. Iwould think you know where home plate is
relative to third base. Dropping ateammate's name and saying he's in the way
when he was doing his job, don't think that's great. You could just
say, if you're Stuart Fairchild, yeah, I screwed up, didn't make
a good throw. I mean hewas asked what happened. He felt like

(01:44:32):
he just kind of came up withsomething. If you don't know where home
plate is as an outfielder in majorleague baseball, that's probably a problem.
I mean, you go up therefour times a game, you swing the
bat up there, you know whereit's at, and you know where you're
at on the field. So Ithink that was a pretty lame excuse as

(01:44:55):
to what happened with Stuart Fairchild inthat throw on Saturday. Meanwhile, yesterday,
Nicolodolo pitched and David Bell talked aboutthe fact that after the game that
Nick had a blister on his indexfinger. Here is the Red Skipper after
yesterday's game. He was pretty good. I think I doubt he said this,

(01:45:21):
but he started the game with apretty good blister on his finger.
So to be able to do whathe did, it really affected him,
mostly on the curve bow. Hewas able to still throw some good ones,
but you know, without one ofhis best pitches, that was a
pretty good effort right there. Sohe continues to pitch really well and you

(01:45:45):
know, continue to be one ofthe best in the game. Today.
It was just a little bit morechallenging for him. Was that the index
finger or the yeah, I believeso, yeah, yeah, So he
had to go a lot more fastballthan he would normally go. Yeah,
he still did throw his curveball, but it was just tough, really tough
to get a feel for it.So we'll monitor it really close, and

(01:46:09):
you know, he was able topitch, you know, and there's always
little things that guys are dealing with, so that was a little thing.
But you know, for a pitcher, being able to feel the ball properly.
I thought he did a really nicejob of dealing with that and pitching
the way he did. I wasjust gonna say that way. I know

(01:46:29):
it was a few years of whya wage, just numerous games with a
poster or sheet. Yeah, it'sdefinitely a concern. I think he got
through the game today with without itgetting worse, if that's possible. A
lot of that has to do withthe work our trainers are able to do
with him, and they're able toput some sort of substance on there that

(01:46:51):
the umpires know about and that helpskind of keep it closed up. And
so hopefully that will help and we'llcheck it closely here the next couple of
days. That is David Bell, the Reds manager, talking about Nick Widolo
speaking of substances and umpires. Howabout Edwin Diaz of the New York Mets

(01:47:12):
last night during Sunday Night Baseball, gets popped for having a illegal substance on
his hands during the game when hecomes into pitch and is now facing a
ten game suspension. Now facing aten game suspension, pretty crazy stuff.
Edwin Diaz, of course, thebrother of Red's closer Alexis daz Mets won

(01:47:34):
that game by the way, fiveto two. When we look at the
standings across Major League Baseball as awhole, starting with the National League Central,
the Brewers now have a five gamelead over the Saint Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals have won seven of theirlast ten, including three in a row.
They are thirty nine and thirty seven. Sonny Gray had a perfect game

(01:47:57):
through six innings yesterday before he gaveup a home run. But Sonny Gray
has been great for Saint Louis thisyear. Pittsburgh in Chicago, or excuse
me, Pittsburgh thirty seven and fortyThey're seven and a half games back from
the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs arethirty seven and forty one and eight games
back the Reds in last place atthirty six and forty one. Reds have

(01:48:20):
lost six of their last ten. They are the only team outside of Milwaukee
in the division with a positive rundifferential. Milwaukee is getting set to start
a series with the Texas Rangers. The Cardinals are at home against the Braves.
Pittsburgh obviously is here. Chicago goesout west to play San Francisco at

(01:48:41):
San Francisco, and the Reds obviouslyhome against Pittsburgh. In the National League
West, the Dodgers have an eightand a half game lead over the Padres.
Padres are the only other team inthat division at five hundred. They
are forty one and forty one lEast Phillies now have a seven game lead
over the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta isforty three and thirty two. Everybody else

(01:49:03):
Washington, New York, Miami underfive hundred in the National League East Philly
is fifty one and twenty six quickly. In the American League, the Yankees
are fifty two and twenty eight. They have a game and a half lead
over Baltimore, a nine game leadover the Red Sox. Tampa and Toronto
both under five hundred. In theCentral Cleveland has a seven and a half

(01:49:25):
game lead over Minnesota. Kansas Cityhas now fallen to third place in that
division. They're forty two and thirtyseven, nine games back Detroit and Chicago,
both well under five hundred. Andthe AL West. Seattle has a
six game lead over Houston six anda half game lead over Texas. Mentioned
how hot the Astros have been. They've won five in a row. Texas
has won four in a row.Houston has won seven of their last ten.

(01:49:47):
They are thirty eight and forty andmaking a run in the American League
West wildcard wise, Cincinnati two anda half games back of the final wild
card spot them Cubs, Pirates,Mets, d Backs, Nationals. Nationals
are half a game out. Padreshave the final wild card spot, Cardinals
have the second spot. The Braveshave a five and a half game lead

(01:50:11):
on Saint Louis for the first wildcard spot. Obviously, with the leaders
of Philly, LA and Milwaukee atthe top. Beneath the Reds, San
Francisco is a half a game backof them than Miami and Colorado wrap it
up. And in the American LeagueBaltimore, Minnesota, Boston are the wildcard
teams. Boston holds a half gamelead over Kansas City. Behind Kansas City

(01:50:32):
trailing by four games. Is Houstonand Tampa all right fully up to date?
There? When we get back acouple of phone calls, this is
Cinty three to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty. Are you sp found Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen

(01:51:02):
Elmore. A few minutes left beforewe turn things over to moegg Or he'll
join us for quick hits and Locksof the Night in just a little bit.
Still have time for a phone callor two five, one, three,
seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. I just spoke with someone who
called into the show to ask,uh, where Tony's been? What happened

(01:51:25):
to Tony's Tony Okay? I said, yeah, Tony's on paternity leave.
He said, well, I've beenlistening for the last couple of weeks.
I didn't know where he was at. I mean, I appreciate our listeners.
How do you not know? Uh? Anyways, Uh, Dick and
Dayton is calling in. Hello,Richard, what's on your mind? Well,

(01:51:46):
what's up, Austin? How areyou doing it? I'm great,
man, It's good to hear yourvoice. It's been a long time since
we've spoken. Yeah, I waitedlast night, but you know, you
mentioned something that I thought was realimportant to the Reds on seven hundred last
year. At this time, wewere in first place, weren't we.
Yeah, right around there, yeah, eleven eleven we had leven Gate.

(01:52:08):
But then in the All Star Ikept thinking they sort of slipped down the
dreen, didn't they after that?Didn't they? Yeah? Yeah, they
did. They just they struggled.Seems like they ran out of gas a
little bit last year. Yeah.I just think, you know, they've
got to well you've got, whatis it, two more weeks. They're
going to have to win some ofthese games often to Yeah, you know,

(01:52:29):
if they want to get back infirst and you know, these excuses,
you know, Austin, we don'twant because I think they have a
pretty good team here in twenty twentyfour. Yeah. Well, I mean
they got to start winning eventually,Dick. I mean, I know they've
had some injuries, but they gotto start winning if they want to get
back to the playoffs. Yeah.Yeah, but I thought i'd put my
two cents worth in. Buddy.Well, I appreciated, Dick. You

(01:52:50):
have a good day. Okay, you too, all right? Yeah,
you know, Dick actually reminds meof something I was going to talk about
today. One year and one dayago. One year and one day ago,
this happened at Great American Ballpark. Here's the one pitch to da Cruise.
He swings it, hits a rockettoward right center field and high off

(01:53:14):
the wall. Dala Cruz around first, and he will coast in the second
base with a double. And hejust barely missed a home run. That
ball was smashed Dela Cruz a missileoff the wall his last time up.
And this ball is kerr rushed deepright field. It is a five to

(01:53:35):
four ball game. A two runshot by Dela Cruz and folks, I
think he's getting loose, Nick youready's here's the one too and a broken
bat flare short center field down fora hint McClean waved around third. He'll
score around to third base. IsIndia on the RBI broken bat single de

(01:54:00):
la Cruz. Here's the two twoand there's a drive toward the right center
field gap that's down. This willsend India around third day La Cruz going
for third. Here's the relay notin time. An RBI triple for Ellie
Dla Cruz and he has just hitfor the cycle. Tommy Thrall and Jeff

(01:54:24):
Brantley one year and one day agoat Great American Ballpark as the Reds win
their twelfth game in a row andEllie de la Cruz hits for the cycle.
The magic that you felt watching thatteam on a nightly basis. It
didn't matter you turn them on TV, you turn them on the radio.

(01:54:45):
It felt like they have a chanceto win no matter what. This team,
bunch of unknown guys, a bunchof exciting young players, they had
a chance. And that twelve gamewin streak a year ago, right now,
we were playing those highlights and talkingabout that moment and waiting for this

(01:55:05):
team to play again. You couldnot wait to watch them again the next
night and go for thirteen in arow. Just thinking back to that,
probably the most memorable Reds game outsideof Jay Bruce clinching the NL Central in
twenty ten, that I can thinkof in my lifetime. To see Ellie

(01:55:26):
do that city Connect night Atlanta Bravespacked hows twelve wins in a row.
That was awesome. It's crazy tothink how different things can be a year
from now, just in the generalbelief of a team and kind of the
way things have veered off in recentmemory, just because of life in baseball
getting in the way and players struggling. But I just remember the excitement around

(01:55:49):
the city that it felt like somethingspecial was actually happening, and I just
can't wait to get back to thosedays. I can't wait to talk to
Mowgger'll do that next on ESPN fifteenthirty News on ESBN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's
sports station. It's time for sinceythree sixty Quick Hits on ESBN fifteen thirty.

(01:56:13):
Yes, indeed it is welcome back, quick hits and locks of the
night. Pleasure to be joined nowby Hey, he's right here, mog
hi mo. How are you?You got people that don't know where Tony
is? Yeah? That guy calledme and said, where's Tony Pike been?
Is he angry that he hasn't beenon in a while. He didn't
seem to be angry, concerned, didn't really say anything nice about me,

(01:56:34):
just was like, what's going on? Well, I think you've been doing
a good job. Well, thankyou. I appreciate that. Do you
know what happened on this date innineteen twenty two? No, the American
Professional Football Association transformed into the NationalFootball League and the Chicago Staley's transformed transformed
into the Chicago Bears. And didn'tthey beat their first team like two hundred

(01:56:56):
and sixty six to nothing, somethingalong those lines. I believe. So
at one point they were the DecaturStaley's I know you were a big fan.
Oh but yeah, Happy birthday tothe National Football League. Decatur Staley's
related to Dawn, right, Ibelieve so, Yes, somewhere down the
line they are. You were atthe ballpark this weekend. It was what
was that? Like? It wasfun Friday, and then it was fun

(01:57:20):
for a while on Saturday, andthen it's not being fun because the Reds
started running the bases. My daughterran the bases after the game yesterday.
Yeah, that's always a fun thingon Sundays. They let kids run the
bases. She's better at running thebases than the Reds are. I don't
get it. She's seven. Idon't get like, is it because they

(01:57:45):
have a bunch of players that, you know, maybe aren't really major league
caliber players. But even then, the baseball IQ is something you learned.
I don't know when you're Crosley's age, right, So you and I are
both David Bell guys, right,Like, I think it would be fair
to say about both of us,we have, I think, gone out
of our way to defend him whenhe has taken some unfair criticism. We

(01:58:05):
have gone out of our way totalk about whatever hand he has had and
whatever, the Reds are doing good. When they're doing something good, my
guy is awesome at holding umpires accountable. He's apparently not very good at holding
his own players accountable. Because whatwas the word that most used after Saturday,
sloppy. Third time in a weekand a half, we're talking about

(01:58:25):
the Reds playing a sloppy game.Be kind of cool if that stopped at
some point, my guy, whydon't you stop worrying about throwing tempertensions with
the umpires. Maybe throw some ofyour own guys. Yeah, they are
second in Major League Baseball and outson the base path. They are second
in Major League Baseball in the timesa team has been picked off fourteen times
this season, they've been picked off. Good teams aren't picked off a bunch.

(01:58:47):
And look, I understand he mightsay, well, they're gonna run
the bases aggressively, they're going toforce the issue, and you're gonna have
to handle what comes with that, which is they're gonna make more outs on
the bases than other teams. Fine, but it feels like a lot of
times when a guy makes him outon the basis it's totally unnecessary. Right,
Why is freeley breaking from home whenthere's no force play with a ball

(01:59:09):
hitting right in front of home plate. So should should the philosophy change because
the players are not good players?Maybe maybe maybe you have to play it
safer, right, I think that'sa totally fair question. And then we're
gonna kind of get into that today. Yeah, what else is on your
show this after? Like, Ithink that is a I think that is
a legitimate and fair question. Uh, we're gonna talk about David Bell's temper

(01:59:30):
tantrums. Call it. That's whatthey are. Yes, It's why I
wish I was a baseball manager.I would like to be able to get
paid to act like that. Butlike, all right, yesterday, everybody
cheers, everybody's excited. What purposedoes it really serve? What are we
doing? I mean, that guystunk. He wasn't very good, and
Nick Lodolo got screwed. Nicklodolo hadthree strikeouts essentially that turned into walks.

(01:59:54):
They were all three two pitches, sure were missed calls. Fine again,
he's awesome at holding the umpiresccountable awesome. He is apparently not great at holding
his players accountable. Nicolodola pitched witha blister yesterday. Why, it's a
good question. Who else I don'tknow, they go out of the pitchers.
Why if it's going to keep himfrom being effective then white he pitched?

(02:00:19):
Why could you get away with wearinga backless suit coat? I could
not know. I think I could. I think you probably could. I
thought you wore one this morning? Is that not what that picture was at
Moeger I wore a regular suit.It wasn't backless, although as hot as
it's been, would have been niceif it was. You know, David
Bell when he got ejected, hetied Sparky Anderson for the most managerial ejections

(02:00:44):
of all time with the Reds, and he did it in half the games.
So we're gonna ask this pole questiontoday when he breaks the record,
should there be some sort of ceremony? Should the Reds have a moment?
Should they give him like a carafor something like put something on the scoreboard
and then the crowd rises to theirfeet. Well, let's just say that,

(02:01:04):
like Ellie Dela Cruz one day breaksJohnny Bench's record for most home runs
in Reds franchise history, they'll dosomething the subsequent game, right, they'll
I mean they're not gonna interrupt,but like they'll, they'll do something.
So when David Bell hits ejection numberthirty one, should there be some sort
of commemoration of this. We're gonnaask this pole question today, you know,

(02:01:26):
