Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back in our number three since he three p
sixty here on ESPN fifteen thirty, Austin Hilmore riding solo today, Tony.
We'll be back on Tuesday, but tonight we get full
swing into the high school football schedule, and I wanted
to talk a little bit about high school football. Hand up.
I'm not great at Cincinnati high school football. I'm not

(00:21):
great at the knowledge. I don't follow it as closely
as I should. I've learned everything basically through Tony and
our pick'em segment over the last couple of weeks, and
also through this man who joins us now, Greg Shoemaker,
who co host or hosts or whatever he does with
high school football tonight on ESPN fifteen thirty. Coming up tonight, Greg,
how are you? Are you ready for high school football

(00:43):
season is back?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Oh? Man? Awesome, I'll tell you what it's uh. I'm
glad it's here. I can't wait to get out and
we're going to see Litlakota West and Thank Xavier tonight.
There's the number Wiakota West is hosting, and there's the
number three team in the Blitz five Top twenty five
and day Next is number four. And then just down
the road at Princeton High School, you got number one
Princeton taken on number two Moler. So you couldn't ask

(01:06):
for a better first weekend of football, the top four
teams in action against each other. I mean, we're gonna
know a lot eftert tonight about some of these teams.
And then all over the area's got great matchups all over.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
I was gonna say, I was asking a couple of
people in the office before I talked to you, as like,
you know some things I should ask Greg, And they said,
number one Moler, Princeton's that's that's the big game. That's
what everybody cares about. And apparently these guys used to
be big rivals in the seven. I'm ignorant on this, Greg.
They used to be big rivals. They haven't played in
like twenty years in the regular season. Is that what

(01:38):
this is?

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yeah, that's exactly right. The seventies and the eighties it was,
you know, it was all about Pat Mancuso, the head
coach at Princeton, and Moeler's head coach, Jerry Faust. You know,
back in that day, I think there were only four
teams that got into the playoffs, whereas just about everybody
gets in now, I mean Division one. These these two teams,
they'll both get into the playoffs because there's sixteen playoff spots.

(02:02):
But back in the day, it was a heated rivalry.
And you know, Moler was winning state champions left, championships
left and right, and Princeton was right there with him.
And hopefully these two guys there, I think they're both
in their nineties now, but I think and they're both
going to try to be at this game. I know
they're both still around, so Jerry doesn't get around as
much as he used to, and Pat's sort of sort

(02:23):
of up there. But you know, I had talked to
Pat several years back. We did a segment with him,
and just a great ambassador to the game, and he
still goes to the Princeton games when he can. So
it's just it's going to be an all round great night.
Plus the two teams. I mean, my goodness, Matt Ponatowski,
the quarterback at Moeler, is only a junior, but he
started in two state semi final games already in his career,

(02:46):
and he's just he's got a heck of an arm.
He's the heat of a player. He's got all his
weapons except mister football. Jordan Marshall is not returning. Yeah,
he's up in Michigan. But and then the Princeton defense.
I think they've got ten guys on their defense and
have Division one offers, including their outstanding PJ Nelson, who's
hit Indiana.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Oh my gosh, ten D one offers. That's insane. Let's
backtrack a little bit. High school football Tonight follows Lakota
West and Saint X Tonight on ESPN fifteen thirty. Kind
of walk people through. You've been doing this for a
while now. I produced a few of these shows when
I first started here. Walk people through what a Friday
night is like for you and what to expect from

(03:28):
the show during football season every Friday night.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Sure, so we'll actually be on at six o'clock ruin
just a couple I'll host the pregame portion of the
show from six to six forty five. And we're actually
on both Fox Sports thirteen sixty and ESPN fifteen thirty
all year long, except for Week nine, we're only on
Fox Sports thirteen sixty. But yeah, so I have colosed

(03:52):
for the first forty five minutes and then we kick
it over to Ralph Nardini and Tony Shaddy, Saint Xavier
Bomber's broadcast team, and the pre game tonight, I've got
interviews with Willmington head coach Ryan Evans Junior, the new
head coach over at Bishop Brossert, and that's Adam Kazerski,
the son of Bruce Kerki Kazerski, the former Bengal and

(04:14):
former coach at holy Cross. And then of course I've
got uh, let's see who else did I get on
here with me? So I've got, oh, Aaron Hancock, the
head coach of the Wyoming Cowboys. So those guys all
sit down and give us a little bit about their season,
their teams, and preview their games for this evening as well.
Then then we go, like I said, the State Next Football,
and after Saint Next Football, we're back in the studios

(04:36):
Robb nine to fifteen, nine thirtieth or so, and we're
there till eleven. We'll be bringing you postgame interviews and
all the scores and highlights from around the area. I
do have coach the coach from the win, coach from
the Mueller Princeton game, and Saint x and lacoa West,
So we'll either have Bolden inspect from that game or

(04:57):
Bert Bathiani and coach Parker one of those two from
that game. So we'll have a big loaded night of teams.
And also over in Kentucky number twelve Covington Catholic, they're
over at number seventeen Ryle tonight and we'll hopefully get
that winning coach from that that game on as well.
And I mean the kid over there at the defensive
end at Ryle, Dylan Smith, if you haven't seen him,

(05:20):
he's a he's a good one. He's headed the Louisville
So got lots of talent on both sides of the
river this year, especially in northern Kentucky. We've got some
depth there on some of these really good schools.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
Yeah, that's yeah, that's just one of my favorite parts
of the show is that these guys win these games
and they come off the field and they call you
and they talk to you and h and chat with
you guys, and that's pretty cool to see every single week. Okay,
outside of of Princeton, Moler, outside of Sainte x Lakota West,
what are some of those sneaky games maybe flying under

(05:52):
the radar that you're going to be keeping an eye
on tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Well, let's just start with your high school and we'll
go a little further up North Sydney from I as
a game against Belle Fountain. Bell Fountains quarterback is already
signed with a high committed to Ohio State. Yeah, he's
a good one, Tavian Saint Clair. So I feel a
little bit sorry for your voice. But the sneaky fun
game tonight that your coach up there, Dave Tayners, is
a good one. Yeah, he's gonna have He's getting players there.

(06:18):
It's just a matter of getting them acclimated to his
system after this is Beaches his second year. But uh,
but that's a that's a fun game to keep your
eye on. That's Tavian Saint Clair up there.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
I was told they're expecting they're expecting a sold out
crowd at Sydney Memorial Stadium. Uh for mister Saint Clair.
I was even told Chip Kelly might be making an appearance,
So that'd be a big deal for Sydney.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, and that's a great stadium too, have a nice
facility up there, So yeah, that'd be a fun night
for you guys. But around the area one game that
that I'm keeping an eye on is leveland at Harrison
Harrison with nine and four last year, and Loveland's got
a brand new coach, but Andy Crews, who wasn't head
coach at at a Loved One, he's now the receivers

(07:02):
coach at Miami of Ohio with Chuck Martin, and he
did not leave the barrel empty at all for new
coach Brian Damewood over there at Loved One and some
other good games. Wells South's taken on Cole Rain and
it's always a good West side battle. But Cole Rain
went winless last year, which is really crazy after such
a great run of twenty years of league championships in

(07:25):
a row there at the GMC, so a different time
in a different place, those those games are going to
be good ones. And then of course out in Indiana,
we can't forget it's always the kickoff East Central, who's
back to back state champions the last two years in
Class four A. They're hosting rival Lawresburg tonight and that's
always a packed house and this year to the East Central,

(07:47):
but when that game is at Lawrenceburg, that atmosphere is
second to none out there it's just so fun.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah, that's cool. I gosh, I missed high school. Fo
I've been to a game in too long? Is this
one of the things I have not done a good
enough job of, like getting to some of the games
in Cincinnati. Uh. If I were to adapt the Cincinnati
area's high school outside of my own Sydney up north
up north of Dayton, Greg, what team should I pick?
Who should I root for?

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Wow? That's a good question. I mean, I think it
all depends on what you like, you know. I mean
I could get in trouble if you're looking at it
if you liking the team just because of where they
play Elder the Pit. I mean, there's no doubt about it,
all right.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
I got some friends who went to Elder, So.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Yeah, yeah, I mean that's a good That's a good
spot to go to. Uh. Some other great places just
to go see a game and root for a team.
Like I said, Florence Burg is always fun. Highlands has
a great little stadium over there, and uh, you know,
and come cat they used to play games on Saturdays,
and it's just that stadium sits in a little neighborhood.
It's just the Saturday after name noon games that Cubcat

(08:49):
are always always special. And I also like mc nicholas.
They got a really good Penn Station stadium out there
is a really cool little venue another place that when
they played on Satdays in the fall, it just they
just had that prep school feeling with the leaves on
the trees and changing color. So the school's there to
look at for sure.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
We had a Joe danmon on the show the other
day and he was talking about how it's for the
first time since twenty eleven last year a Cincinnati team
didn't win a state championship? Is that going to change
this year? Greg? Are we going to get another state
champion Cincinnati?

Speaker 2 (09:25):
I think Division two we've got a really good shot.
But again Masline Washington is up their yea Maskeline Washington
and their state champions last year. Now Division one. It's
kind of funny. There's a hier archy of what's been
going on in the last three years. And Sat. Edwards
has won the Big school Division one state championship the

(09:45):
last three years. They've beaten Springfield, who plays went Wood
plays went Woods plays them tonight. But Springfield has been
the state state runner up the last three years to
Saint Ed's Springfield has beaten Moler in the state semi
final games the last three years, and Moeller has beaten
Lakota West in this in the regional finals the last
three years. So there's a lot of hierarchy there, and

(10:07):
a lot of teams have played a lot of football.
But Princeton is loaded, and I think they you know,
they got a lot of obstacles to overcome, but with
so much talent they could do so division three maybe
I just think division two we might have a state
championship out of this. This area so deep in Division
two and and in Division one we got we got
some really good candidates with Wittonwood, Moler, Princeton, Lakota West,

(10:30):
Change Xavier, and I don't want to leave any of
those other teams out. Yeah, Black Older, but you know
there's some good, good teams there.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
His name is Greg Shoemaker. He hosts the High School
Football Tonight Show on ESPN fifteen thirty and Fox Sports
thirteen sixty. First show of the year, kicking off underway
tonight at six pm, and then it'll be back after
Saint x and Lakota West. Greg, what's the best way
for people to follow along with all the coverage you
guys have for high school football tonight.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Yeah, yeah, I mean you can get Tri Statefootball dot Com.
We'll have everything updated there. Again, we'll give you all
the scores or highlights on high school football tonight starting
at nine, not right after the same Xavier game, and
we'll have coach interviews there. But yeah, it's all your
all your good stuff. You can go to try State
football dot Com and get it all right there.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Awesome. Thank you so much, Greg, Best of luck this year.
We'll be listening tonight.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Man, all right, talk to you soon, Thanks Austin.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Thanks Greg, and you know how about Greg coming with
you know, prepared with some Sydney Yellowjacket information as one
of his sneaky good games. A man after my own
heart is Greg Shoemaker tonight six pm right here on
ESPN fifteen thirty and Fox Sports thirteen sixty. We'll take
a break, we'll be back. Mo Egger coming up soon
for quick hits and locks the night right here on
