any of the retail locations. All right, awesome hour number one.
We now have to address yesterday's practice and some of
not a little bit of the backlash that came with it,
and Austin, I think the best way to describe this
if we set it up. You know, I'm I'm asked

(01:42):
each day to observe Bengals training camp and six times
throughout the morning, in the afternoon talk about what is
happening at Bengals training camp. I try to rely on
the fact that I played college football and I had
a brief cup of coffee in the NFL to watch
things that I was taught or watch things that make

(02:04):
sense to watch, and through much of training camp objectively,
I would say that there's been a lot of positive
reporting on Joe Burrow. You know, there's been reports on
how good Burrow has looked, how good the timing is.
He's doing so without Jamar Chase and sometimes without t Higgins,
and he's still moving the ball really well, and he's

(02:26):
checking all the boxes and it just seems like things
are moving in the right direction. And yes in saying
that Joe Burrow himself has talked about the spiral and
coming back from the wrist injury and not being one
hundred percent but progressing in the right way. I thought
Joe Burrow checked every box possible in preseason game number
one of what he was asked to do under center

(02:48):
gun made a fifty three yard throw down the field.
Didn't really pull back and let one rip down the
middle yet. But that's the next step of the progression.
But what I have learned in Austin, I know what
you learned is that we need to really follow a
line of what we observe and what we legitimately feel.

(03:12):
I'm not once come out and said I am legitimately
concerned for Joe Burrow in the twenty twenty four season.
What I have talked about is that there are times
at practice where it just doesn't look like it's there yet.
There are times at practice where Joe Burrow looked visibly frustrated,
and none more than yesterday. Yesterday was the most frustrated

(03:32):
I've seen Joe Burrow in a practice in quite some time.
This comes on the heels of Monday. We're leading into Monday.
He had downed one interception all training camp. He threw
two on Monday, could have thrown three Yesterday, was intercepted
again when he missed andre Yosivash on a slant Yosi
Vosh was opened, threw it behind him. Josh Newton made

(03:54):
a great play ball was intercepted by Joe BATCHI or
by Joe bought you of all people, but there's a
difference in Joe Burrow looks frustrated. Joe Burrow had a
bad day. I'm not concerned about the future. And oh,
Joe Burrow is just terrible. I feel like Austin. So

(04:16):
many people took it away yesterday that you and I
thought Joe Burrow is lining himself up to have this
awful season, when in reality it's no more and no
less than an observation of what has happened in the last
two days of training camp, which by all accounts has
not been great for the offense.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Yeah, and you and I have had a lot of
conversations off the air where you've told me, you know,
I noticed this about Joe. I've noticed this when he's
in between reps, and I haven't seen this that I'm
used to seeing from him. And you've always been like,
I'm not trying to sound the alarm. I'm not trying
to freak people out. Yeah, I'm just like noticing some things.

(04:53):
And to me, your opinion carries a lot of weight
because of your expertise and because of your history of
playing the quarterback position. I've also asked other people, hey,
Tony has told me this, are you seeing anything like that.
Most people have told me no, that they don't really
hear a lot of concern. They don't see a lot
of concern. Okay, great, but your word carries weight to me.

(05:14):
And so yesterday when I heard you talk about how
bad the offense had been for a second straight day,
that Burrow didn't participate in individual drills, that he went
and took you took a break in like fifteen yards
behind it just kind of collected himself. It just made
me think back to those conversations and say, you know what,
I'm worried about some parts of Joe Burrow. It does

(05:35):
not mean that I am attacking him as a player
or as a person. It does not mean that I
am rooting against him. It does not mean I'm rooting
against the Bengals. But unfortunately that's the way it was
perceived on social media, and I do think this is,
you know, I can't allow and I think sometimes we
fall into this trap of allowing, Okay, the vocal majority

(05:56):
of people on Twitter is really representative of the rest
of the fan base.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
It's not.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
It's really just a small sliver, but it's the things
that we see consistently throughout our feeds and our mentions
and whatever it might be. I do think that there
is and I know some of the other reporters can
attest to this, there is this belief that you cannot
say anything negative about the team, or you cannot be

(06:23):
critical of the team or else that means you're against them,
you're against them, when it's not our job to be
for or against the Bengals. It's our job to report
on what we see and what we hear and what
our thoughts are and share our opinions. You may not
agree with them, that's fine, You're not supposed to agree
with agree with us on everything. But to interpret, you know,

(06:47):
opinions and speculation as as attacking a player or a
person or a team is just completely misguided. And I
think that's what happened a little bit yesterday. I know
you and I were kind of trying to figure out
how to navigate that. I just stepped away from it.
I was like, I'm not gonna talk. The more you
try to explain yourself, the worse it gets. But I

(07:10):
think in the big picture here and I know we
have some audio to get to. Joe Burrow has been
quite open about the fact that there is a learning
curve with the wrists and there are going to be
good days and bad days. To me, that worries me
a little bit about what the season looks like and
when he gets hit and when he falls on it.
And I've tried to figure out and I have not

(07:32):
heard this yet. I've asked people, has there been any
work with Joe Burrow on learning how to fall trying
to avoid falling on that wrist. I have not heard
that yet, which maybe that means it's not a concern
at all. I would think it is. There is no
precedent for a surgery like this with an NFL quarterback,
and so that concerns me. It is not me doubting

(07:54):
Joe Burrow's ability to be a great quarterback. Every time
we've had these conversations, you followed it up with, you know, what.
It almost doesn't matter because he's so accurate. Yeah, he
can put the ball wherever he wants.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
That's the craziest part is that in these conversations it's
man his spirals not as tight or it doesn't have
the zip yet, but he's still one of the best
quarterbacks in the league. Yeah, his accuracy, his timing, it's unbelievable.
It's second to none. Here's the thing, because I use
the term frustrated yesterday, and anyone you talked to from
yesterday's practice would be lying if they tell you that

(08:28):
he wasn't frustrated Joe Burrow. I watched him walk over
after a period of practice to an individual drill while
the other quarterbacks were doing the drill, and he stood
there and kneeled down about fifteen yards away just to
collect himself. I saw him after some of the team drills,
walk about five yards back past where everyone else was,
take his helmet off, collect himself. Here's my thing. I

(08:51):
think yesterday was the combination of about five different variables
weighing on Joe Burrow. One, he's not quite one hundred
percent yet with the wrist. Physically, he feels better, he's bigger, faster, stronger,
he's mentally more sharp understanding of what defense is doing.

(09:12):
But there are still some throws that I think he
wants to make and maybe can't for whatever reason. Yet
I think that's a small part of it. The second part,
Marius Mims went down, and since Marius mimss went down,
the offensive line has not looked as strong. The defense
has won and they've won up front multiple days. So
you're not getting the best reps in because you can't

(09:34):
finish the reps because you're getting sacked or what would
be a sack in your practice setting. That's two number three.
Can he be frustrated because yesterday t Higgins wasn't out
there and because Jamar Chase has yet to take a
snap or a rep at training camp this year. Yes,
yesterday there were more pre snap penalties, there were more

(09:56):
misalignments from the offense that we've seen through training camp
to this point. And the final one for me Austin,
I think Joe Burrow is starting to realize the urgency
of this situation because early on in camp, what was
the message with no Jamar Chase? Boy, what a great
time this is for the young receivers to get reps
that they wouldn't get if Jamar was out here. Do
you remember those conversations, Oh yeah, well here we are. Now.

(10:19):
Let's think off day today, joint practice, Tomorrow, off day, Friday,
a game in which Joe Burrow is not gonna play
on Saturday, at least I don't think he is. Off day,
Sunday practice, Monday, joint practice, Tuesday, off Wednesday, a game
in which Joe Burrow will probably not playing on Thursday.
And all of a sudden, the season's here no longer

(10:41):
for Joe Burrow. Can the message be? You know what,
this is awesome because I get to get reps with
all these guys right now. If I'm thinking, if if
I'm Joe Burrow, I'm like, man, we're way too close
to the season to be having misalignments or to be
reading a route incorrectly, or for me to have to
be bringing these guys along. And you know what, maybe

(11:02):
it'd just be nice if Jamar was out here and
I could throw to him, not saying there's animosity, but
there's got to be a frustration. And I think yesterday
Austin that all of those combinations came together at once,
and I think he let off some steam yesterday. Is
there anything wrong with that? Is there anything wrong with saying, man,
the tip of your cap to the defense. Cam Taylor

(11:23):
Britt after practice said they dominated. Defense got in him
a little bit. That's okay. I'm not saying it's not
okay for the defense to win. In fact, if t
Higgins isn't practicing and Jamar Chase is in practicing, I'm
hoping that the defense is winning more time than not,
to be quite honest. So it's great that the defense

(11:44):
played well, But can I voice an observation that Joe
Burrow was frustrated and why he was frustrated. That's why
it was yesterday, and I think it brings more importance
into tomorrow as well.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
I think also when I say about worrying about Joe,
it's beyond just his physical health. It's also the toll
that he takes as the franchise quarterback, and he's been
more open about talking about his mental health this year
as well. You kind of have him Joe being between
a rock and a hard place as the face of
the franchise with the Bengals and his best friend Jamar

(12:19):
Chase holding in and those two at odds right now,
he has an increased role as a leader. Without Tyler
Boyd and Joe Mixon and DJ Reeder and others no
longer in the locker room, He's trying to teach and
help these young players learn an offense while also trying
to learn the new wrinkles of a new offense with
a new quarterbacks coach and a new offensive coordinator. His

(12:40):
wrist might not be feeling all that great. His offensive
line is adding a new piece, and Trent Brown has
not been great. And this will be the fifth year
of Joe's career, it'll be the fifth different starting right
tackle that he's had to work with, and on top
of that, he's getting more training camp reps than he's
ever had before. All of those reasons are why I
be like, all right, I'm a little bit worried about

(13:01):
where they're at right now, and I hope that things
get better. It's not necessarily like, oh, Okay, this season's
in the tank. It's not what I'm saying. I think
you'd be crazy not to look at all of it
and say, Okay, yeah, I'm a little bit worried about
how they're gonna find their way out of this. But
at the end of the day, I think Joe Burrow
is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The
Bengals will be fine.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
A lot of that stuff was highlighted in a conversation
Joe Burrow had with Ryan Clark as part of the
Pivot podcast, talking about where he's at physically mentally as
the season approaches. Listen to this answer here from Joe Burrow.

Speaker 5 (13:36):
You talked about every new throw, every new angle, every
new space you'd be in would be an.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Adjustment from being injured.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
How confident are you and where you are now and
where you will be starting this season as compared to
the Joe Burrow where you used to see play.

Speaker 6 (13:53):
At all pro level. I think I'm better right now.
I think mentally I'm faster. I think my bigger, faster,
stronger this year.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
My risk is coming along.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
When you're coming back from an injury like that, you
get so much better every single day, every single rep.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
You're basically relearning how to move.

Speaker 6 (14:12):
Your wrist and throw again, which is always a process
that I enjoy and I'm excited about because I love
the feeling of getting better, and when you're injured.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
The beginning, you're getting.

Speaker 6 (14:26):
So much better so quickly, and then there's a little
plateau a couple months where it's like I haven't really
felt like it's improved much, and then all of a sudden,
there's another spike in how you're feeling and how much
better you're getting. And then this is my first training
camp and yeah, two years I was limited in twenty

(14:47):
twenty one and then twenty twenty was COVID. So these reps,
these are reps that I haven't had for the last
three years, really, and so I just feel myself getting
so much better every single day.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
And that's that's what I.

Speaker 6 (15:02):
Love about the process and football, and the grind is
you when you feel yourself improving, that bill's momentum to
go back and continue to do it, continue to grind
because you can feel that paying off.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
That's what I love, all right.

Speaker 4 (15:21):
So that is really good stuff from Joe Burrow, a
lot of what you alluded to, Austin, and I do.
I think it's interesting because I genuinely believe that mentally
he is so far along. He talked about last year,
his season didn't end when everyone else's season ended. His
season ended in Baltimore, and mentally he was able to
get a jump start physically, he was still able to

(15:41):
do a lot of the stuff that he needed to
be able to do in the offseason. So when you
hear Joe say I'm bigger, I'm faster, I'm stronger, I'm
mentally ahead, that's all true. But even Joe, even Joe
in those settings Austin is cognizant enough to say the
risk is still coming along, which means that there's still

(16:03):
something there For Joe Burrow, he talked about it plateauing
and for the longest time you don't feel like it's
getting better, and then there are days that it does.
He's even he's opening the door, He's peeling back the
curtain to you to say, yeah, you know what, the
wrist isn't there yet. He's talked about that at camp,
but it's gonna be. I think even Joe Burrow is

(16:24):
alluding to that. Is that how you take that conversation?

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
Agree with everything we we just heard there. Let's take
