Speaker 1 (00:00):
About Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsored in part by Cincy Shirts.
Cincy Shirts, All Cincy, all Day. This is ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome back Cincy three to sixty moving along hour number
two thanks to our friends. As you just heard right
there at Cincy Shirts. Is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Let's switch gears from the football field to the basketball court.
College basketball right around the corner. We've spent a lot
of time on the Bearcats. I know Moeger talked to
Sean Miller on his show. Let's spend some more time
on the Muskies, including some huge news. Today, let's talk

(00:37):
to our good friend Adam Baum. He's a podcaster, He's
all over the Sean Miller podcast and according to his
ex or Twitter, he had just constantly searching for Citrus
yet spends time joining us today. Adam, what's up, hey, Tony?

Speaker 3 (00:50):
How are you man? It's been too long to be back.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
It's my favorite time of the year because when I
get to talk to you, I know that college basketball
is right around the corner and right here locally. It
should be a heck of season. Both you see and
Xavier big big hopes and aspirations this year. So let's
talk a little bit about the Muskies. But before we
dive into the team itself, let's talk about something that
you've obviously been sitting on for a while and it

(01:13):
got announced today and I see all over social media
that there's a ton of buzz and hype. I'm excited
about this, But tell the listeners everything about the project
that you guys have been working on and what's coming.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yeah, this has been, you know, months in the making now,
and you know, obviously we've we've been doing the Shawn
Miller Podcast for a year almost exactly. Next Monday will
be our fiftieth episode, which is pretty cool. But if
you know anything about Sean, if you listen to the
podcast or even listen to a press conference, he loves
the NFL. It just comes up organically. He likes to

(01:49):
talk about it. And it was back in May he
reached out and he said, you know, I love Hard Knocks.
I'm a big hard knocks guy. He's like, do you
think that we could do something like this this season
at Xavier? And you know, at the time he brought
it up, I think my initial response was like, oh,
of course, yeah, we can do it and then and
then you get into it and you're trying to execute it,

(02:12):
and you realize how hard it is. You know, you
watch an episode of Hard Knocks and you watch the
closing credits and there's fifty sixty seventy people working on
that show. And we have three yeah footage you have
to go through, Yeah exactly. And we've got a great
guy's name's Josh Samstrout. He's our director and our video editor.

(02:34):
He's put a ton of time into it. Paul Frischner
is one of our producers in addition to being the
co host of the Sean Miller Podcast. But really it's
been this this group effort that started back in late May,
and we've just been filming everything word Xavier every day,
documenting stuff, and Josh has put together a really good
first episode. It's going to premiere on November twelfth on

(02:57):
Fox nineteen locally here in Cincinnati, and then the following
day it will be available to stream on the Seawan
Miller Podcast YouTube channel. So it's pretty cool. All the
episodes are an hour long, which I think is unique
and to our knowledge, we don't know that a college
program has ever done this for an entire season, So

(03:18):
we're going to be at every game, every practice, just
documenting everything, and then the episodes will come out basically
when they come out throughout this course of the season.
Is pretty exciting.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
My big takeaway from that is that Sean Miller and
I are really not that dissimilar. We both love Hard Knocks.
How much Hard Knocks did you watch to get inspiration
for this? Oh?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
An unhealthy amount, Austin. I've been watching everything. We went back,
we watched old seasons of Hard Knocks, We watched you know,
I don't know if you guys ever watched The Last
Chance You on Netflix, which is a really cool, like
sports documentary style show just to kind of see what
other people have done and then see what he could do.

(04:01):
And you know, it's called all In, which is kind
of Xavier's slogan, and it's become this whole thing on
Twitter now, which is really cool. But this has been
one of the more challenging things I've ever been a
part of, but also one of the most fun and
rewarding things because we don't really know what this is
going to be or what it's going to look like.

(04:22):
It's very dependent on how this season.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Goes Yeah, you know, yeah, I think one of the
coolest things, like when I'm watching Hard Knocks or I
know that Hard Knocks is around something happens during a
game or a practice, and then I'm thinking to myself, Man,
I can't wait to watch that in detail on the
next episode. And I can't imagine as well. You mentioned
the season as things happen, it's just another reason to

(04:44):
tune in to say, Okay, let me see the behind
the scenes of this win or what went into this
game or the preparation. It's like you said, it's something
that hasn't been done, but it's so interesting and now
doing it from a college basketball standpoint is awesome.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Yeah, and I give Za you're a ton of credit
for wanting wanting to do this and realizing the value.
I mean, there's a ton of reasons why you wouldn't
do this, and there's a handful of really good ones
why you would, and I think they were more focused
on here's why this is a good idea, and they
put a lot of faith and trust in our podcast

(05:18):
team to help execute this, and it's really cool. Man.
It's like if you would have told me two three
years ago when I was working at The Inquiry and
being a beat writer, that i'd be working on a
documentary TV show that follows a college basketball team. I
wouldn't know what to say about that, but I'm really
grateful that things have turned out the way they have.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
You said, you're getting you guys are getting ready for
the fiftieth episode of the Sean Miller Podcast.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yeah, we got a special one.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Well what's crazy to me, Adam, is we've probably been
doing this for years now, right going back to your
days with The enquir And I'm listening to Sean Miller,
who was on with Moeger earlier in the week, and
although we've been doing this for years, Moegar just randomly
gets the invite to go on the Sean Miller Podcast
from Sewn himself, and I just wonder, what's been the

(06:09):
disconnect that that maybe I've not received that invite. Are
you guys looking to maybe do something tandem or Mow
and I come in together. But I just can't help
but think through fifty episodes now that I'm a little
hurt by this.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah, you know you got to roll into that, honey.
And I'll be honest, I love Meager. He's he's a
dear friend, much like you and Austin, although Austin I
don't know that he's the biggest Adam Baum fan these days.
I did I stole some of his coffee creamer in
your office.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Yeah, you took about a gallon of it, so waiting
on my repayment.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
It's in the checks in the mail. But here, here's
what Sean conletely left out of that whole interaction is that,
you know, I really I personally handle the scheduling for
the podcast. So if Sean wants to have a guest on,
you know, that's really it's got to go through me.
So what we can do is we can sit down

(07:05):
figure out a plan that works. Yeah, and you know,
maybe there's a world where you and Moe come on together.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
I mean, Adam, I think at this point you've seen
me at enough Xavier basketball games.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Now, yeah, right right, let me.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
Let me put my producer hat on here. What would
you talk to Sean Miller about me? Or what would
Sean talk to you about the team. What's interesting Sean
Miller about the football fan? He obviously knows the history
of Cincinnall. What about what about Shawn's audience, which is
there for basket.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Let's talk about the Muskies. Let's talk about the return
of Zach Freeman. What about Jerome Hunter?

Speaker 4 (07:38):
You don't know anything about than he's the.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Team that have been brought back for this season. I
think it would be a fantastic episode and I can't
imagine all the UC fans that would be excited about
doing it. So why not just rip the band aid
off with.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Mo and I?

Speaker 4 (07:52):
I don't know if your Twitter mentions will be worth
it from the UC fans from personal experience, if it's worth.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
It, Adam. On a basketball note, we did see earlier
in the week a huge loss for this Xavier Musketeer
basketball team. And you know, I brought it up with
Mo on Monday. You you rarely see a coach tweet
out about a player injury the way that Sean Miller
talked about this injury on on Monday. How significant of

(08:19):
a loss is this for the Musketeers and how do
they replace that expected production?

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Yeah, it's it's incredibly significant. I Bazill, you know is
his nickname. His real name is Lucina tre Ore. But
from day one, since he got here, he's been a
guy that stood out. He's been a guy that gives
you maximum effort every day, a guy who wants to
get better, who's really into the details of how can

(08:47):
I help this team win? And I think watching him
go down, there's a reason why Sean put out that statement, right,
It's because he knew how impactful Bazill was going to
be to this year's team. And the realc is you
cannot replace what he brought. There's no one else on
the roster who does what ba Zeal did. And I
think that's what they're trying to wrap their heads around

(09:09):
right now, is Okay, what do we do with our lineups?
How do we overcome this? And I think the way
this year's team is built, they can overcome this. It's
not a death sentence by any means. It's definitely going
to hurt, but I think like having Zach fremantleback, having
John Hugley get in shape and lose all the weight

(09:30):
that he lost, you know he's ready to go now.
So you might see them play a lot smaller this
year with guys like Marcus Foster and Dale and Swain
at the foe. But yeah, it's you know, just getting
to know Bazil personally, like his story is remarkable. He's
a wonderful human being, and I feel terrible that he's

(09:50):
going through this right now because I think with him
on the floor, they're formidable teams and they still can be.
But it's like you never want you never want to lose.
You're starting five man a few weeks before the start
of the season, and I think right now it's going
to be all about how do you adjust? What do
you do now? And I think Xavier's really diving into

(10:11):
how they're going to navigate that and figure that out.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
You know, Adam, when when you look at the makeup
of this team and you go and dip into the
portal and you try to remake the roster to match
what is the college basketball landscape right now, and you're
bringing in players that maybe aren't familiar with the program
or or the mentality at Xavier. How how key is
it to have a Zach Fremantle. How key is it

(10:35):
to get a Jerome Hunter who have been there for
a long time now to not only lead, but to
show newcomers to this program what playing a Xavier is about.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Yeah, it's it's massive because if you rewind the clock
to last season, the guys you needed to be on
the floor to do that. For that new team they
had were Zach Freemantle and Jerome Hunter, and neither of
them are there. You know, they were both hurt last year.
So having guys like that, and I'll throw Daveon McKnight
in there right like he's got a year under his

(11:06):
Belton system. He knows what's expected, he knows how to play.
I think those guys in particular have taken ownership on saying, Okay,
we brought seven new guys in this year, it's on
us to help bring them in and show them what
Xavier basketball is all about, what the style of play is,
what's required, what's expected. And I think that's been really

(11:28):
cool to watch that stark difference between last year and
this year, when last year they didn't really have anyone
who could do that. Everyone was new. It was a
lot of guys who had never played together before. Your
most experienced player in the system last year was a
sophomore Desk Claude. This year, that's not the case.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
When you look at the makeup of this team. What
are some names or a couple of names that people
may not be familiar with, but they're going to become
familiar with, whether they're watching all in or watching this
season get underway. Give me a couple of those players.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
Ryan Conwell is a big one for me. I'm just
enamored with his game, the way he carries himself, what
he brings when he steps on the court. I mean,
everyone's going to talk about his shooting ability, but he's
like a really smart, savvy player. He can handle the ball,
he can play make for other guys like that. A
lot of the qualities that Quincy had last year, Ryan

(12:24):
Conwell also has. And then he has additional stuff on
top of it that I think is really going to
benefit Xavier this year. So he's kind of he's the
most the easiest answer. But there's another guy on this
team that I think flew under the radar a little bit.
He was actually their first pick up in the transfer
portal and he's from Furman and his name's Marcus Foster.

(12:45):
And you know, it was kind of like they get
all these guys out of the portal and Okay, Zac's
coming back, Jerome's coming back, Davion's coming back, Dalen Swain's
coming back, Trey Green's coming back, and he kind of
got lost in the shuffle a little bit. It was like,
who is this guy. He's been and one of the
most impressive players to me all summer long, all fall.

(13:05):
And he's a guy that can play realistically the two,
the three, and the four. You know, he's six ' five,
he moves great, he can shoot it. He's got you know,
go go gadget long arms. We were at practice the
other day and I was like, Marcus, you got you
got some long arms, man, and he just looked at
me and said seven to one. So he's got seven
foot one wings fans, So he's gonna be an instrumental

(13:28):
part of this team. And what you lost with Bazil
was his rebounding, his toughness, his effort. I think Marcus,
even though he's much smaller at only six foot five,
he brings a lot of those character traits to the
basketball court. He loves to rebound, he's really good on defense,
and he plays hard. So I think Marcus is gonna

(13:50):
he's gonna play a lot of minutes this year for
this team.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
Ryan Conwell also went to Pike High School, which is cool,
so I'm already a Ryan Conwell fan at him before
I let you go this Sunday now tomorrow night, U
see Ohio State are getting together at Fifth Third Arena,
and Xavier and Dayton will get together on Sunday at
UD Arena. And I know that the game itself is
supporting mental health and suicide prevention and so many good

(14:16):
qualities in that. How how good of an opportunity is
this for Sean Miller's team, because I'm assuming UD is
going to be sold out, if not close to being
sold out. I know it's just an exhibition, but what
can you take away from something like Sunday with a
team who's trying to gel together with different pieces.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
I think it's honestly to me, I know Xavier is
going up there they want to win, you know, anytime
you strap it up and you take the court like
you're going out there to win a game. But I
think like bigger picture beyond that, the first time this
Xavier team is ever going to square up against another team,
a different opponent, that's not a practice setting. You know,

(14:54):
they get to do it at UD Arena against the
talented team in front of a fan base that is
going to be rowdy and raucous and absolutely hate Xavior.
I think like that part of the puzzle for me
is the biggest thing that Xavier gets to be tested
on that level, on that stage, right out of the gate,
Like that's what they're going to experience at the third

(15:16):
in a crosstown shootout. That's what they're going to experience
when they go to Butler and Yukon and all these
places in the Big East. So the fact that they
get to do it right out of the gate in
Game one, I think it's going to be really beneficial
for this team is like, you know, a jumping off point.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Adam always always appreciative your time. I look forward to
talking more. With the basketball season set to get underway
one more time. The easiest way to follow along with
all your coverage with the Muskies and to follow along
with everything of.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
All In.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah, my coverage is pretty simple these days. I just
tweet pictures of Clementine thus of the time at Adam J.
Baum on Twitter. But yeah, in seriousness, everything that we
do with the podcast is at Sean Miller Pod. You've
got a YouTube channel, and like I said, new episodes
of the docu series, which is titled All in the Day,

(16:06):
after they air on Fox nineteen, they'll be available to
stream on the Sean Miller Podcast YouTube channel.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Adam always always appreciate your time and look forward to
talking again to man. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
Likewise, thanks Tony.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
There he is.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
That's Adam Baum. This is since he three to sixty
hour number two, which means your talkbacks when we get
back on the whole of the Bengals ESPN fifteen to
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
