Penn Station on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Thanks
for joining us and look forward to to listening to
what our next guest has to say. Our good friend
of the show joining us right now to break down
everything we saw last night's game against the Washington Commanders.
Joe Goodbarry, Joe, what's up?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
How you doing boys? Joe?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I believe I saw earlier in training camp seventeenth season.
Now talking about Bengals football, you're doing so with Bengals
on the brain presented by First Star Logistics. In those
seventeen years, can you remember more questions about a starting
defense than what we're going through right now?

Speaker 3 (01:00):
No, that you're right, That probably is because we've had
years where it's been whether it's the old line, maybe
it's just the defensive line. Maybe it's just the corners,
but no, you're right. This is an entire unit that
is under the microscope right now, from the starters to
the backups and who should be playing at linebacker. You know,
there's a lot of questions last night with that to
the makeshift defensive line with no Trey Hendrickson out there,

(01:21):
no Miles Murphy last night, and seeing Dax Hill for
the first time. Yeah, there are a ton of questions
on the defensive side.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I don't even know where to start. Joseph Osai has
not really taken the step forward. We haven't seen a
ton from Miles Murphy at camp. We've seen none of
Trey Hendrickson. We've raved about Shamar Stewart at times. And
I thought early in camp Demitrius Night was solid. I
thought he took a step back. I thought at times
Logan Wilson looked a little bit off, and the secondary
has kind of been in flux all of camp. We're

(01:47):
sitting here now and we know it's a quick turnaround.
Last preseason game on Saturday, and then it's all hands
on deck for Cleveland. Can they right this ship? In
your opinion, in that amount of time and put together, again,
not a top ten defense, but can they put together
some sort of resistance to other offenses in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
They definitely can. And the thing is it's preseason, right,
we have to remember that. You watch the film, you
look at the calls and you say, Okay, it looks
like they're trying things. It looks like they're trying to
slant and stunt with their defensive line. You know, different
coverages in the in the back half, and they're trying
to work through the young linebackers Demetrius Knight, nets Lowland Wilson,
work with Chris Jenkins instead of BJ Hill as a

(02:30):
starting defensive tackle, not really getting the containment they want
from the backup edges you know, Shamar Stewart and Miles
Mr Pindoslosai. And it's like, okay, you know what, if
you get Trey hendrickson back, that's a big part of
the defense. If you're game planning for opponents and having
third down packages that you're specifically designing for for the
offense that you're facing, yeah, defense can look much much different.

(02:53):
And I think guys like Demetrius Knight need the reps
and I think you got seven snatch last night. So
you know, there's a lot of room for improvement, but
a lot of time to grow still. So can they
be better? Of course they can, and I think a
lot of that is Trey and a lot of that
is getting bj hillback, getting Dak Hill for the first
time we saw him playing outside corner and then moving
into the slot and their nickel packages. I think that's

(03:13):
how you maximize him. Getting Geno stoneback that they should
help as up and down as he was last year.
It helps to have a free safety on the field
that has NFL experience on Tyson Anderson's played about one
snap in his NFL career in regular season, so it's
not a real direct replacement every other guy who doesn't
have the time on the field. So yeah, there's a
lot of ways you can get better. But still we're

(03:35):
going to be going into Week one saying, all right,
let's see it, let's hope, because I don't think a
lot of these starters are going to play on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
What does give you hope right now? Specifically on the
defensive side of the ball, What are you most excited
about from what you've seen through those first two games.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
I do think the Shamar Stewart conversation should continue. Yeah,
he looks strong in camp, but I think the defense
has had good days in camp, not so much in
preseason action. But I think Schamar at the very least
can be a chaos creator and a disruptor, which is
something they desperately need. Yeah, there's he may miss some tackles,
he may have some bad angles, he may not be

(04:12):
able to get off blox all the time, but he's
gonna run through a brick wall at one hundred miles
an hour and see what happens afterwards. And again, if
you pair that with trade that he might clean up
some sacks off Schamar's pressures. So I do think that
the versatility upfront from him, because he's playing every side
on every position on the defensive line, left densepentd right
defenseven defensive tackle, moving them all around, I think that

(04:33):
can really help your defense. So I think continuing that
conversation is worthwhile and being excited for him and his impact.
And then the other one is Dax Hill. Like I said,
I think a lot of people saw Dax Is coming
out of Michigan as he's a slot guy. He's going
to play the slot like he did in Michigan and
he's going to be a souped up Mike Hilton. I
mean that length, that side, that speed is rare to

(04:55):
find in the slot. That's why he can become a playmaker. Well,
then last year, we tell't play boundary corner, and there
were some people that are like, hey, you could do this,
and I thought he looked good through the five games.
He's probably the best corner in those first five games
last year before he got hurt. They brought him back slowly.
Is their first time seeing him last night, and right
away they come out and they're in a base defense
and he's a boundary corner and I say, okay, so
let's see what they do in nickel and in nickel

(05:16):
they kick him inside in the slot. This is reminiscent
ofly On All. That's the role of a number one corner.
I think that's best of both worlds. That's how we're
going to see him as best. And if you can
get him to play at that level where he's an
impact defensive back because you're moving him around, because you're
keeping them and letting him do what he does best,
that that's a big boost to the defense.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
You mentioned Trey Hendrickson, and everyone kind of has their
own idea on where this is going to go. I
have thought, as Austin has, that by the time the
Cleveland week rolls around, he's going to sign, He's going
to be a Bengal. He'll make the trip and have
an impact ideally in the game. Has anything that has
transpired over the last couple of days altered your view
of what ultimately happens here with Trey Hendrickson and the

(05:59):
Cincinnati Bengal y.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
I did think the reporting was different this time around,
where it felt more maybe from the team perspective, that
they have exercised or at least explored trade options. And
then you I don't know if you guys saw this,
but the GM for the Patriots was doing an interview
yesterday and he said that we are willing to give
of a premium pick if we have to. And then

(06:23):
there was reports that Kyle Dugar is on the trading block.
And then there was reports last night during the game.
I think it was from a Boston reporter that said
the Patriots are one of the teams that have contacted
the Bengals about Tree Hendrickson. So I thought, man, maybe
there is some smoke there for the first time because
I never thought it was real. Because of how the
Bengals operate, they will overvalue their players in a trade scenario.
Right They'll say, give us a first plus a player. Well,

(06:45):
that's a lot right now. Plus the team's got to
give a contract up for Trey Hendrickson, as much as
we love him and I think he's in a weak
pass prushure, it is a lot to give up two
weeks to go for the regular season. So I don't
expect it to happen unless a team like the Patriots
are offering that Cayle Duggar and a premium pick. Well maybe, so,
you know, I did wonder about that, but ultimately I'm
with you, guys. I think we're only at eleven thirty PM.

(07:07):
We got thirty minutes before the clock at midnight, which
is probably Thursday night before week one, and we're probably
at eleven forty five, which maybe a week left to go.
Things are going to pick up, and then if we
approach midnight, both sides are going to look at it
try and say, look, this is our final offer, take
it or leave it. And last year it happened with
Jamar Chase and Jamar said, leave it. I'll do this

(07:28):
next year. The previous year happened on Thursday Night football
Joe Burrow signed. It was like, I have time, right,
So I think we're going down that again. Why does
it have to be so painful? I don't know. It's
the Bengals, that's what they do. But I think that's
where we're going.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Dalton Reisner is visiting today. I know that you've been
bullish on him and the Bengals bringing him in. Explain
to people why you feel so strongly about Dalton Reisner.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Yeah. Riisner was the number one target I had in
free agency from the pickup of Guard, and it's because
he hasn't been valued by the league. I think that's
relative to his play. And he's a very very good
pass protector and has created as such. And I think
I'm filmy looks like a very good pass protector. He's
been charged PFFS gave him one sack for the last

(08:13):
five years and true pass sets that sounds awesome. The
Bengals are in chiefs are the two highest teams in
true pass sets scenario. So let me get a pass
protecting guard. Great and he last year I think he
made one year two point five million with the Vikings
Hates probably looking at that type of deal again. So
I thought for value and fit, Dalton Reisner is a
great fit for the Bengals, and he was a guy

(08:34):
I'm like, let me get him. And it's been three
years running now where I want to don't rising on
the Bengals, and he typically sits out there. He's typically
undervalued and people are gonna say, why is he out there?
Is this Layol Collins? Is this you know? Is this
Trent Brown? I don't think it's that. And he did
have a back injury last year. I think he kept
them off the field for the first couple of weeks,
but largely I think he's had issues. He pushed a

(08:55):
backup quarterback once in Denver. He's been a bit of brasis.
He's online on social media, and I think that's you know,
sometimes Rubs teams. But justin Risquay, who came from Minnesota,
knows who Dalton Reisner is. He probably is very aware
of what type of personality is and what he can
and can't do. He's not a great run blocker, but
he's a fantastic pass blocker, and I think that's a

(09:16):
perfect fit. So if the Bengals end up signing him,
I think he is going to end up the starter
at right guard. The defense has been using Lucas Patrick
as a human highlight reel in camp and even in
the preseason that the Eagles did, But so I don't
think the leash is too long for Lucas Patrick. I
think Reisner can come in and beat him out pretty quickly.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
How did you feel viewing the first quarter last night
after the Bengals go down and score and watching on
back to back possessions Joe Burrow scrambling, Joe Burrow taking hits.
Do you view that as that's part of what Joe
wants or was it a little bit too much last
night given the dynamic of the field they're playing on
not having the other skill guys in, how did you
view the usage of Joe Burrow in that first quarter?

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Yeah, Star're on the scary side, because I think of
both sides with this scary side is this preseason. That
field is notorious for ruining careers, right, and they had
some rain earlier in the day. All these things, and
it's preseason. I don't want the quarterback getting hit. I
don't want Joe getting hit anytime, even in the regular season,
but at least then it's potentially worth something. I did
not like it at all, and I wondered why he
was still out there starting offensive lines out there, but

(10:21):
all the weapons were backups, and Joe said he wanted
those reps, and I think sideline reporters said he want
the rets with the depth at receiver, which makes sense
because he misses time. Right, Tremaine Burton has missed time
for different reasons. Charlie Jones is miss time. You got
to see who the Mitchell Kingsley is. You got to
throw to Yoshi. You gotta throw these backup guys and
get pass protection from kyge Buroks and just p Ryan

(10:43):
and different things like that. So I get that part.
I also, on the other hand, I don't want to
take that away from Burrow. Like Burrow is a playmaker.
He's the guy who's gonna fight when things look bad,
like he's got two rushers in his face. That play's
not over right, going to throw it away? Not all
not a lie. He's not Andy Dalton on third down

(11:03):
throwing the ball away on four downs down by a score, right,
Like we hated that now We're on the other side
where Burrow will fight for every single play and try
and keep it alive as long as possible, and that
is in his DNA. I don't want to take that
away from the mount of fair. It's preseason. They're not
you let him play the way he's going to play
in Week one. I think that's how you get a
better Jill Burrow.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
On Week one, you mentioned Mitchell Tinsley. Does Mitchell Tinsley
make this roster for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
I think he has to. I originally was thinking, you know,
Charlie Jones and Isaiah Williams as the last couple of
guys depending on how many they want to keep. Charlie
Jones looks like he's still their return man despite Jermaine
Burton having a nice return with the Eagles, but Burton's
delt with injuries and I think Isaiah Waiam's behind both
of them now as a return man. Isaida Williams at

(11:49):
nice pupp returned last night too? Or the Commanders out
kicked their coverage a little bit. But Williams really hasn't
done anything on the offensive side in preseason, and the
Bengals really liked him and I get it, but I
don't I think a team's gonna claim I say, Williams,
you could feel comfortable cutting him and putting him on
your practice squad. And Charlie Jones has looked good in
the preseason. I thought he had a good game for
Steagles when Browning was poor, and you know, he did

(12:10):
what he could there. But then he caught Joe Burrow's
touch on pass last night, and I think Burrow trusts
him a little bit, and they I think they're excited
about what Charlie Jones could be in in a wool
position in this offense. And then you get to Mitchell
Tinsley and it's like, okay, if Burrow says he trusts
this guy, He's made a couple of big plays. Dan
Horde has tweeted a couple of plays out there through

(12:30):
training camp, and I retweeted those earlier today. So if
they're looking for those, he's had big plays. It wasn't
just this game, and they wanted to see him with
the with Joe Burrow, he was out there. It was
Charlie Jones, Andreo Shabash and Mitchell Tinsley when Burrow was
still out there, and I thought well that's interesting. Okay,
that tells us the packing order there. And when you
get a guy that has ball skills and contort his

(12:51):
body in the air and turn away from defenders the
way he does go up and high point the ball.
And Jamar Chase was doing an interview during the game
and he said to Laura Ruttledge, he says, his release package, Actually,
I like to watch Mitchell Kingsley because he's got the
best release packages. I'm him and that's brought running off
the line. Well then, okay, he may be a really
good runner as well. So yeah, I think he's on
the roster, and I think you keep that many because

(13:12):
the Bengals, they're out there, they're three wide receiver team
most of the time.

Speaker 4 (13:16):
Another bottom of the roster guy that I felt like
had a pretty good night last night was Braylan Lux.
I know you also talked a little bit about the performance.
What did you see from Braylan Lux at Bengals fans
might want to keep an eye on over the next
week or so.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Yeah. So when he was an undrafted prospect, I went
back and watched the film and I thought, you know,
they only put him at boundary corner, but the way
he attacked, run, played the run tackled, was willing to
come in and put his nose into it, I thought,
And I didn't think he had great long speed and
great deep ball skills, but anything shortened underneath out it's like, yeah,
this guy's he's got talent. I said, I think he's
a slot guy, and I did that on my show,

(13:51):
and I was happy to see the Bengals using him
in the slot. And maybe he got a little bit
of Mike Hilton. Power's putting on a number twenty one.
But he they're run blitzing him there. They're blitzing him,
They're they're having him take on blockers and lead blocker
and he looks like Mike Hilton out there, but he's
much quicker, faster, and stickier and man covered. I mean,
he's young. Hopefully this continues his next couple years. I

(14:12):
think he's fighting for maybe a potential bottom corner roster spot,
but if not, I think he's practiced squad with potential
for future years. And if another team's watching this, they
may want to develop him on the back half of
their roster if they've got a poor cornerback room. The
Bengals are pretty deep, the deeper at corner than they
are at safety. I think this is a year they
keep probably six corners and four safeties, which means he

(14:34):
may be that sixth guy. I would I'd be interested
in developing him Fowers the Bengals and not putting him
on waivers because corner is such a position that gets
hurt and teams need corners all throughout the league. I
wouldn't want to expose them to anyone.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Is there a player or a position group battle that
we're not discussing enough that that you think is going
to be interesting as cutdowns approach?

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Yeah, I think it's probably the fifth defensive tackle. If
we say that b J. Hill and TJ. Slayton and
Chris Jenkins and the Kenley Jackson are safe, and I
think mckaylem Jackson is. There's some question atter the first
preseason game he's still playing in the fourth quarter, but
I think he's the direct backup to TJ. Slayton as
the nose tackle. The fifth guy, though, has been Tavan Bryan,
undrafted guy Howard Cross from Notre Dame who probably has

(15:19):
helped Balding's guy. He had a couple of really nice
pass rushers last night. Tavian Bryan has always been a
solid pass rusher and can give you that, and that's valuable,
and he's a veteran and he you know if you
play him, you know what you're going to get out
of him. And then the last guy last night, Eric Gregory,
another don't drafted defensive tackle, had a bunch of flashes
and he was one of the better players on defense
last night, and he's more of a run stuffer. Well,

(15:41):
he also wanted a pass rusher last night and got
in the backfield quite a few times. And I thought, Okay,
if that's what Gregory is, maybe he could make the roster.
Maybe he's at least on the practice squad, and maybe
it's Tavin Bryan on the roster, and you get Howard
Cross in the practice squad as well. One of those
three guys are going to make the fifty three. And
I would expect all three on the team in some

(16:03):
capacity being the practice squad. But it is an interesting
battle to watch people with the veteran with Davin Bryants,
you go with the guy probably a Golden Wikes and
probably you know, campaign for in Howard Cross. And then
I think Eric Gregory is just as good a prospect
as Cross, but different style.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
We question a lot of you know, is Demetrius Knight ready?
Where's Barrett Carter? One thing I think we're gaining a
very clear view on Joe is the play of Dylan Fairchild.
Back to back strong performances for the rookie, the third
rounder out of Georgia. I believe he's the second highest
graded offensive lineman through the draft process this year. How

(16:39):
confident are you on an offensive line that does have
some questions? How confident are you with what they have
in Dylan Fairchild?

Speaker 3 (16:46):
I'm growing confidence, no doubt about it. If you listen
to any evaluator pre or post draft, anyone that watches
the film, they all said the same things about dying
Fairchild that he probably needs to be reworked a little bit.
I need to work on his hands a little bit
more and his timing of his paunch. But he's willing,
and he's a wrestler, and he you know, he's he's
got that mindset that he can work with. And then

(17:08):
after the Bengals draft and they're, Yeah, Scott Peters and
Dan Fairchild hit it off and they're in lockstep of
how they want to develop him, and it's like, okay, well,
shout out to Scott Peters because he looks like he
had developed fast, like instantly. He looks different than he
looked at Georgia and his hands usage are is so
much better. He's recovering like he's There was the play
last night verus John Payne where he loses the initial

(17:29):
rep reed, gets his hands underneath, torks his midsection, gets
his hips him out in front of Dron Payin and
rides him out and away from Joe Burrow. This is
a slant to Tanner Hudson in the end zone that
wasn't completed, but it's like, oh man, that's it. It
looks like a veteran guard out there. And now we've
seen rookies all around the NFL and in preseason have
a good performance of menapor performance, especially on the offensive line.

(17:50):
Consistency is the key there and we're getting it back
to back. I'm excited you get that back to back
and that's like, Okay, maybe this is who he is.
And if it is, shout out to Scott, to Duke
Coben and the drafting because they haven't hit on offensive
lineman in a while it feels like, hopefully Marius Mens
is also that dude this year and it'd be back
to back years. That'd be great. Keep drafting Georgia Lemon,
I guess, but that would be huge for the Bengals

(18:12):
offensive line. And then if he's that good and Men's
takes that step and Ryanda Brown solid and Ted Carris
a salad and they add Dalton Reisner and he is
he's been throughout his career. That's the best offensive line
Joe Burrows had in his career.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
Then feels like they can make a significant impact if
they can get Riisner to be here in Cincinnati, which
I don't see at this point. Why not? Lastly, I
know it's pretty simple. Evan McPherson has looked much better
throughout training camp in the preseason. Any reason to believe
that he's not going to rebound from a down year
last year.

Speaker 3 (18:44):
I think this is a big storyline, maybe an underrated one.
When I was talking about enough, I'm glad you brought
it up. That ball looks different coming out, That ball
looks like it's spinning straight. Had that like almost seventy
five three quarters spin last year and it kept trailing
in the last like ten yards of them. You know,
A hopes the goal post last year and we'll just
just swing out of there. So whatever needed to be corrected,

(19:05):
if it was injury or you know, holder long snaper,
what it looks figured out. We've got two fifty yarders.
If that's what McPherson is again, you can bomb these
fifty yarders and an offense that may go forward a
ton on fourth down. We saw it three times last night,
which I'm in favor of the offense on the field
score touchdowns. Right, that's you probably have to win this
year if McPherson's back. We're talking that's probably three games

(19:26):
last year that could have been won if they nail
those field goals at the end. Charger of Ravens I
think of right away, and there were others. The one
point could have been different than the Chiefs game Week
two as well, and I missed extra point. So yeah,
if that's fixed, and it looks like it could be
also an underrated boost to this team.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Awesome stuff man, as always, Jill Goodbarry Bengals on the
brain going into year seventeen. What is the easiest way
that folks can follow along with all the coverage you
