East CoA subs, handcrafted hot grilled subs, fresh cut fries
and lemonade. It's all about good taste. Pennstation East Coast
Subs order online today. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
All right, welcome back our number three.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Thank you to Penn Station, thanks for joining us on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Our guest to kick
off our number three will not be in attendance Anarrowhead
Stadium on Thursday night, even though he'd probably have an
opportunity to run into Travis Kelcey and me and catch
up for a Bearcats win. He'll be back here in Cincinnati,
but that doesn't stop him from joining us today. From
Fox nineteen. Joe Daneman, Hi, Joe.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
Well Tony, I need to ask you a question.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Oh what's up?

Speaker 4 (00:51):
So Saturday, we went live on our website with our
four options for the Fox nineteen Final quarter Game of
the week. Yeah yeah, okay, four options for Witt and
Boyds and Kings, oak Kill's, Lakota East, Yeah, cubbcat An
Elder and Batavia at reading and with voting set to

(01:19):
close in six hours and more than one thousand votes in.
It's an absolute beat down, a runaway Batavia and Redding.
It's going to be the Fox nineteen Game of the Week.
I have to know how you got the entire township

(01:39):
for Redding to go to our website. U push this thing.
You got sixty percent.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
Of the boat, much like the beatdown that Williamsburg handed
Reading Long Friday.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Whoa it was? It was zero zero in the second half. Okay,
they are improving quarter by quarter.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Now listen, there's a good talent of Botavior. Their quarterback
was in our top nineteen. Their wide receiver just won
our Athlete of the Month. He's going to play college
football Ohio University. So Batavia can spring it. They can
put the points up and we'll be there. Man, the
nineteen game of the Week the VET.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Open yourself up for voting. You never know what you're
gonna get. I love it. Also, I did see this
we got right here in Cincinnati. Currently the nation's leading
rusher as well.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
How about Lance Cantrella Talawanda High School twenty six carries
four hundred and twenty three yards man in five touchdowns
to open his senior season. According to Max Preps, he
currently leads the country in rushing yards. It was funny
yesterday I was looking at the OHSAA all time record list.
He just passed Kareem Hunt for most yards in a game.

(02:53):
If you talk about a guy, I mean the guy
that played in the league. You know, I believe Cream
Hunt probably won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City
chief In Lance Cantrell out of Talawanda High School right
now is one of the twenty five greatest high school
football running games in Ohio history. Outstanding leading the country.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
And is it Dominic Goodman calling the plays?

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Isn't he Dominic Goodbus the offensive coordinator? Yeah? Goodie. I
had a moment yesterday to catch up on the field.
It was funny. The head coach is telling me every
coaching staff should be able to dress and play one
coach because it looks like Dominic still go in there.
He can run the triple option like he's playing for
Kerry Cobe one.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
We also, uh, Joe got the news. Yes, everyone's been
waiting for the Trey Hendrickson deal has done. What are
your initial takeaways knowing the details of the deal, how
this has played out and now the agreement that's in place,
what were your initial reactions the.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Theban was really like Trey Henderson in twenty twenty five,
They aren't sure if they like him past this year.
And that's what we've thought all along about this thing
dragging out and the guaranteed and security that Trey Hendrickson wanted. Look,
we all predicted that Trey would be on this field
week one. We all thought it would be under a
new deal. We just didn't think it would look like this.

(04:11):
And the more you think about it, and the more
you chew on it digest it, it kind of feels like, Okay,
the Bengals really put themselves in a good position here
to control what they want to next year with Trey Hendrickson,
So they get him on the field thirty million dollars.
He earned his raise. Mike Brown said as much two

(04:31):
days before training camp that they knew that they had
to pay Trey Hendrickson more money considering the way that
he played last year and his entire contract in Cincinnati.
But obviously they're worried about his age. He'll be thirty
one in December and going forward, they didn't want to
guarantee money. So now next year, they get to control

(04:52):
what they want to do with them. If it goes
out and sets the road on fire, they can offer
another contract, They can try to franchise tag him, even
though that number will be ridiculously high, believe around forty
million dollars, or they can let him walk and they
get a compensatory pick that should probably be around a
third or fourth rounder. So it feels like, you know,
in the business of good business. This was good business

(05:15):
by the Bengals to get done what they wanted, and
that's to get Trey on the field. With the big
three already signed being Joe, Jamar and t and you
add him to it. He got a shot to get
this team back to the playoffs this year, and they
knew that they couldn't do that without him. And they
buy time for the young defensive ends to start to
produce and start to develop, and that being Shamar Stewart namely.

(05:39):
So I think if they're looking for a clear winner here,
and it's hard to say that Trey Henderson's the loser
in this one when you get fourteen extra million dollars,
but to me, the clear winner at the Bengalist because
they have now controlled what they want to do with
Trey after the twenty twenty.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Five seasons on the field itself, he's not been the
greatest defender against the run. How much better can he
make the product we've seen up to this point, And
I know we've not seen the full product, and I
know Al Golden has talked about keeping things based in
very vanilla, but just on a on a defense as
a whole point of view, how much better do you
think he makes this defense going in now a week one.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
It's become very vogue here in the last few months
for people to poke holes in Trey Hendrickson's game because
of what Miles Garrett got and because of what TJ.
Watt got, and people trying to say, well, how does
the sack leader who plays at the same position not
get the same kind of money forty plus million dollars

(06:39):
that they're getting, And so a lot of people started
poking holes in trade game and they are real. But listen,
I mean, he's not the well rounded player like some
of these other guys that play that position, a premium
position in the NFL. But let's not kid ourselves. One
of the most valuable assets and tools for an NFL
team it's a guy that can get in the backfield

(07:02):
and disrupt quarterbacks, whether that's getting into backfield and forcing
him off platform, or if it's doing what Trey Henderson
did better than anybody in the last year, and that
that's getting the quarterback on the ground seventeen and a
half times. So let's not kid ourselves and act like
Trey Hendrickson isn't worth the money that the Bengals are
paying him because of what he brings in the skill

(07:24):
set he brings to this team. It's very valuable and
he's being paid as such. Now, it is one guy
going to make the kind of difference that we've seen.
I don't know we saw this last year. We know
what it looked like last year with him on the field,
and it wasn't good enough with him. Now, is Shamar
Stewart and a Demetrius Knight and maybe a Barrett Carter

(07:47):
and a TJ. Slayton. Is all that together now going
to make the Bengals defense better plus a defensive coordinator.
That's what they're banking on. That's what they're betting on.
That's what they built this defense on. Is young player
and a new defensive coordinator from what we've seen in
the preseason, it hasn't looked good enough. We've heard what's

(08:07):
been said by Al Golden, We've heard what's been said
about players by players inside the Bengals locker room, that
they put more stock into what they did in training
camp practices than in games. I've maintained all along, whether
it's good or bad in the preseason, I'm not going
to judge the team until they're on the field in
thirteen days in Cleveland, and I'm going to maintain that
and we'll see what the Bangles look like. But it's

(08:30):
good that they do have Trey Henderson. I think it's
also important to understand too, that Trey has all along
been very confident in saying he'll be ready, that even
if he wasn't practicing, that he maintained his game shape
the best he could so that when he stepped on
the field, he'd be ready to be a difference maker.

(08:52):
I take his word in that. I believe him. I've
seen how engaged he is, I know how maniacal he
can be about that time kind of saying, so, I
think Trey will be himself week one in Cleveland. I
don't think this is going to look like your usual
hold ins or holdouts. I think Trey is going to
be ready to be on the field and play like

(09:12):
his normal self Week one against the Browns.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Has anything that has happened yesterday or today from a
roster cutdown standpoint, has any of that surprised you?

Speaker 4 (09:22):
Not yet? I think I think if Cam Grandy does
make the team, uh, that's interesting. But I also think
that's going to be something that once we see uh
thet the Dutch settle and all of these guys who's
been cut, who's been placed on any kind of an
injury designation, that that to me is them are really
going to get our hands on this and really kind

(09:43):
of start to figure out. Okay, was there really a
surprise or did the Bengals end up with extra roster
spots because of a Dajon Anthony or I haven't seen
any news yet on Jermaine Burton. Is Jermaine Burton another
guy that goes on some kind of an injury designation, uh,
considering his knee issues that popped up near the end
of training camp. So nothing yet as far as the

(10:05):
roster goes, but I think there will be something in
the next couple of hours. We'll kind of turn our
head a little bit or look out of the side
of our eye a little bit once we see the
dust settle. But until then, I'm very interesting to see
if Jermaine Burton is going to be on an injury

(10:26):
designation leading up to opening day, because that, to me,
right now, I think is more interesting than you know,
who's going to get the fifty third spot or the
fifty second spot. And it's going to be interesting too
the other guys who are cut from other teams, that
some of those guys might fall into a need for
the Bengals, whether it be offensive line or a safety position.

(10:48):
I know some of those guys have already popped up
and people are talking about them on Twitter. If the
Bengals should take a swing at a Mike Edwards or
some of these offensive linemen who are getting let go,
and you know, we're out of that building. We don't
know what those decisions are going to be, but certainly
it's interesting discussions on cutdown day to see who's out
there and who might fit the Bengals for needs they have.

(11:10):
Even less than two weeks before the.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
Opener, I saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just cut former
Bengal Michael Jordan. You think they should give him a
second chance?

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Joe, No, I'm good.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Does offensive line even with the Dejon Anthony news and
starting the year injured, does that change what you think
the biggest need that still needs to be addressed? Is
it offensive line? Do you do you need to address safety?
More so, how do you view the spots that they
need to attack going forward?

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Yeah, if I were to power ranking, that would power
rank them getting the offensive line right before addressing safety.
But I think it's two things that they should take
a long, hard look at. I think it's interesting that
here we are less than two weeks until the opener.
It felt like the Bengals brought in multiple people to
compete for a guard position, and it doesn't still feel

(12:07):
like it's fully settled and we know what it's going
to look like in week one. I think we can
get it what it's going to look like in week one,
But at the same time, A, it doesn't feel settled,
and B, even if it is settled, it doesn't feel
comfortable with who they're likely going to start on the
right side of the offensive line next to a Marius Mims,

(12:29):
So that would be the power rank for me would
be looking for an upgrade if you can at offensive line,
and then the safety depth right now is of urgency,
so there's no doubt about it. When you're down to
Geno Stone, who's been banged up but says he'll be
ready to play, and you're down to Tyson Anderson as

(12:51):
you're number three in Jordan Battle, who I would argue
would be one or one A right next to Geno Stone.
Certainly there's some depths and they need death right now.
Jason Anthony is going to be out for a period
of time, so that's something I fully anticipate they will
address quickly after they make their final cuts and announce
their final cuts. But even though the depth right now

(13:13):
is being tested in the safety room, I certainly they'll
they'll find a way to add more bodies in the building.
But to me, if you're going to power rank in
roster building and the best way for this team to
be successful, I would still like to see them do
something about that guard position because right now it just
doesn't feel right. And that's concerning considering how close we

(13:36):
are to the start of the season.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Let's switch gears real quick for the Reds Joe. It
feels like there's been times this year they've been teetering
a little bit, and they've always answered the bell. I
think Elliot times looks like he's a guy that's played
in every single game for the Cincinnati Reds, and maybe
there's a little fatigue there. You'll wonder about the bullpen
and how long they can hold on. Does it feel
to you like this Reds team's still has staying power

(14:01):
for the rest of the way, or do you think
they fall off the pace you're going forward.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
I still think they had staying power. I tried to
not be reactionary to this Red season, and I don't
know if it's if it's just me and I tell
myself all the time, do not take social media as
the temperature of the fan base, because it's not the
entire fan base. It's just kind of allowed maybe minority

(14:27):
that you see a lot. But it feels like it's
been a very reactionary season from the Red fan base,
maybe more than ever, And I'm curious as to why
that is. I don't know if expectations were raised so
high for this team that people will be disappointed that
if they do fade in the final month and I
don't think they're going to fade, but I think I

(14:48):
think people right now, at two and a half games back,
with thirty games left and still with the series against
the team that you're chasing, it's almost like you're just
trying to Trea water to give yourself that opportunity against
the Mets in early September. And I've maintained for a
while now that I still think the season is going

(15:08):
to come down to the first ten days of September.
I've said I think the Reds are going to get
to September, They're going to be in the race, and
here they are, it's almost September. They're still alive. They're
still right there. But then they have those nine games
in the first ten days of September against the first
place Blue Jays, against the New York Mets, the team
they're chasing, and then back on the road to the
West Coast for three games against San Diego, who I

(15:30):
would argue right now might be the best team in
the National League, at least the way they're constructed and
the way they're playing right now. So those ten days
at the start of September to me, are going to
be the telltale sign of the Cincinnati Reds team. But
I still feel like they've got another push in them,
whether it's Chase Burns coming back and helping the bullpen.

(15:51):
We heard Charlie Goldsmith talk about it or read about
it that Ret Louder might be an option for this
team in the final couple weeks of the season. We'll
see like a long shot, but it's another shot in
the arm for this team if they needed to hear
it down the stretch. So two and a half games back, sure,
if the Reds were win two in a row and
the Mets lose two in a row, were right back

(16:12):
at the point where we're talking about this team having
a chance to jump the Mets and get back in
that final wild card spot. So I'm not going to
write this team off. It's been a roller coaster, but
that's good. The roller coaster can be fun, right. It's
high moment, it's low moments. But this team has set
itself up for a September to make a run at

(16:34):
the playoffs. And if I were a fan of the
Cincinnati Reds, I would hang on to this team. And
if you made it this far and you got a
chance here in the final month. Why not let yourself
believe this team can do it and get hot one
more time.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Lastly, Joe, I know Thursday that the game happens, they
start with a power for opponent. It feels like there's
an urgency around this team. I know you had a
conversation with Jake Goldey earlier in the week and if
you watched football last weekend Kansas State Iowa State. I
know the conditions weren't great, but that didn't look like
two teams that were poised to run away with the

(17:09):
Big twelve. How massive of an opportunity does Thursday become
for the Bearcats?

Speaker 4 (17:14):
Yeah? I think the most important thing with this Bearcats team,
Tony is is finding a way to keep the fan
base engaged. And if you go out and you beat
Nebraska in the season opener, that's a Big Ten opponent.
It's it's a standalone power for versus power for conference
game on Thursday night, you got a lot of eyeballs.
Who knows that Travis Kelcey is going to be there.

(17:34):
I'm sure he will be and that's get a lot
of attention too. Yeah, though, that would be something unbelievable.
By the way, Tupac will still be number one.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Okay, Chance, Wow.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
I'm hanging with Tupac. Austin. You got this thing for
Taylor Swift that you and I need to talk about.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
The most I know is she would be the biggest
marketing more than Tupac, Which was which.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Was the original question?

Speaker 4 (18:04):
Good point you and.

Speaker 5 (18:05):
Pac though I didn't realize you all was tight like that.

Speaker 4 (18:07):
Don't I can show you. I'm standing right next to
my CD tower. I can show you.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
A CD tower, he said, Corey Dillon or compact discs.

Speaker 4 (18:24):
I'm gonna show you. I'm gonna I'm gonna take a
picture of it to you and send it after this segment.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yeah, please do fantastic Bears.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
Beat Nebraska Thursday night, guys. That then they played Bowling
Green that is Northwestern State. And then you're three and
oh to start the season, and you have the fan
base and gags, right, and that's when you start Big
twelve play. And then you have Kansas and Iowa State
and there's gonna be two hard games for this team.
Kansas has got a good quarterback, some good transfers, including
a wide receiver from Alabama, and Iowa State has their

(18:52):
quarterback back as well, and I know they didn't look
great Week one, but they gotta win, and and there's
a they got a good coach and there's a history
of winning at that pro. But I think the most
important thing for UC is to keep the fan base engage,
and getting off to a great start again Nebraska on
Thursday night would do that and set themselves up for
a really good September. I do want to say this,

(19:13):
Kywie Walker and Evan Pryor. There's been so much talk
about the quarterback position and getting her quarterback back and
having Joe Royer and Dante Corleone and Jake Golday and
Matthew mcdoone, who's a great transfer from Coastal Carolina. This
running back tandem. Tywie Walker towed nine touchdowns in Big
Ten play last year for Wisconsin, and Evan Pryor we've

(19:35):
seen as a big playmaker out of the backfield. That
to me, if they can get those two going on
Thursday night to get Nebraska, that's when you're going to
see this team have success. If you see you can
run the ball and get Walker and prior going, I
think they have a good chance of getting it done.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
Awesome stuff as always that is Joe Danaman. Hey, voting
ends at eight o'clock tonight for the Game of the Week,
so if you're listening in Reading, make sure to continue
to vote. Do you think at the end of this, Joe,
there are more likes on Taylor in Travis's engagement post,
or more votes for Reading and Batavia to be the
game of the week?

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Reading Batavia and I's so I get a free cheese
burger from the greatest grill master of high school football.
That guy always so he's.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Killing Veterans Memorial Stadium. That makes my mind.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
I'm going to send you guys a picture of my
compact discs.

Speaker 5 (20:27):
Please please still send us some disc pictures.

Speaker 4 (20:31):
They're in alphabetical order. I did that when I was
like twenty years old.

Speaker 5 (20:35):
When's the last time you pop one of those babies in?

Speaker 4 (20:38):
I don't have anywhere to play.

Speaker 3 (20:39):
When's the last time you bought a new one? When's
the last time you bought a new one?

Speaker 5 (20:44):
Jeez, fifteen years maybe nostalgic, man? I love teen years old.
Last time you bought one of those compact discs?

Speaker 4 (20:53):
Heck it might have been a Taylor Swift disc.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
He boy, dan Iman, you're the best man thank you show,
Daneman Fox nineteen. You heard a lot there as he
talked about at the end there with UC football. Love
that their head coach Scott Saderfield spoke earlier today.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
So let's do this, Austin, let's come back.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
You want to do a quick touch and go and
then we'll do a couple of minutes of Scott's Saderfield.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
Yeah, why not?

Speaker 3 (21:18):
Next, says No on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
