Speaker 1 (00:04):
All right, little Jeff Henry getting this going here hour two,
hour one, segment two since he three sixty ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, a service of Skyline Chili. I'm
just a little nervous. That's why I've been at a
loss for words, Austin, because normally I'm in the studio
by myself. There's a lot of pressure. When Bob Manjean's
sitting across the table from me.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Wow, I like to apply that pressure, Austin. You know
is playing day, he would I wish the next to him,
just to be pressure on him.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yeah, that was that was pressure points.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Now before we get started, Austin, I thought it would
be fair because you and I talked about this on Monday.
You said, what when you saw Bob Manjen on the
sidelines Monday night?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
I said, he was dripping rat was absolute five. The
outfit is fire.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
We just make him up. As we go to Tony
now School, you see a sweater vests?

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Is that what I saw? Yep?

Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yep. Now when in the closet and signed the game tips.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Off now wes coach Miller every game kind of unveils
new Jordan's that he's wearing.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
For the game.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Do you find yourself going through your elaborate shoe collection.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
No, I don't have the shoe collection was as he
literally has a pair for every game.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Now. He used to wear a lot of cowboy boots.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
I did.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
That was my younger days, come before okame, before I
turned into my seventies. So the cowboy boots come out
every now and then. But since we've been Jordan, it's
pretty nice.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Yeah, must be nice. It must be nice to just
have an opportunity to grab those all right. Thursday night
football in the NFL is hard mentally and it's hard physically.
If you look at what a normal week, or what
was a normal week in the National Football League. You
play Sunday, Monday, you come in and you get treatment

(01:45):
and you watch them tape and you get a lift,
you do a little workout. Tuesday, you're off Wednesday, Thursday
or heavy days, walk through, Friday, travel, Saturday, play again, Sunday.
Here comes Thursday night football. Play Sunday practice, install, Monday practiced, install, Tuesday, travel, Wednesday,
play Thursday. How difficult is this. Let's start from your

(02:06):
behalf on the medical side of things, to get these
guys prepared with such a quick turnaround.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Well really, it's really a tough situation because you know,
you only have you're playing Sunday and then here you are,
you know, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, four days later and
going back out on the field. You know, normal recovery
is about forty eight hours. Sometimes for some of the
guys it's as much as seventy two hours. So you know,
you're just getting them recovered. So you're you're installed day

(02:31):
is going to be non contact, more walkthrough, more film,
you know, not as much, you know, not as much physicality.
You know, even in college you play on a Saturday
and then you play on a Thursday.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean that five day turnaround's hard.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
You know. I remember a year we played up for
Purdue and I think Tubbs was our coach, and we
played Purdue on a Saturday, and I'm like, geez, you know, hey,
Mike Bone, you know you didn't give us much of
a break buying Grain to an ESPN game on Thursday night. Sure,
He's like, well you know they really were him, I said,
and then he gave me the well, you know, Purdue's
not very physical, and I like every Big Ten teams

(03:07):
is physical and sure enough, both for our safeties up A,
Purdue got hurt and we didn't have them for the
using game, and we lost the next game. It's a
very very hard turnaround for both teams, you know, and
whoever can come out of their preceding game healthy has
the leg up.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
It also feels from a player safety standpoint that you
are putting players at risk. You're asking players to not
get I mean you think of cold tubs, hot tubs,
rest recovery. I mean, I feel like half the time
you and I speak, one of the biggest things we
talk about is rest, rest being vital. And now you're
trying to cram everything in a very very short week

(03:49):
to also be the team that travels. It's one thing
to play the game on the road, but we talk
all the time about rest being imperative. How can you
rest and also get ready to play NFL game or
you're essentially creating car wrecks every single play.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
Yeah, you really can't.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
I mean, you got to hope that you play enough people,
which again your roster's limited. You hope that you come
out of it relatively healthy so you can get them
treated and turned around.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
You know, when did the big twelve.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Commissioner just come out with it two weeks ago and said, hey,
when a team football team has to travel over two
time zones, we're going to create the buy the next
week because it's it's just it's really difficult. And again,
people and I'm not going to be the little people,
but people like in a TV media role or people

(04:39):
in a marketing role. You know, they're only looking at
the next game. They're not looking at you know, how
do we sell this next game versus the people in
the medical side and the coaching side. They're saying, man,
you're putting us in a position that really compromises player
health and safety. And I think that that's something that
has to be looked at. And again, I always think

(04:59):
of our situation since that we've had, since you've played,
where we've had those short weeks, because in the American
and sometimes even in the old Big East, we always
seem to have a short week, and so you know,
it always made it a challenge and the kids, and
again people don't realize in college, we still expect them
to go to school, We still expect them to go

(05:19):
to their study halls, we still expect them to get
their work done.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
School work done, so you're.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Just adding and powling on more time management issues with
these kids. So I think at both the collegiate level
in the professional level, these short weeks do not do
us any favors. You know, at least in the MAC
they're playing every week.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
They're playing this week for the week.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
So it's not like they're going to play on a Wednesday,
then play, you know, on Saturday, or they don't play
until the next Wednesday or Thursday. So you know, at
least that conference is accommodated to that schedule.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
You look at the risk of injury because of the
short week. I also wonder how you have to weigh
do you rest guys all week and then not have
them practice for a couple of days and all of
a sudden they go into this physical environment. So from
a training standpoint, how do you go about how these
players need to rest and then still expect them to
play at a high level come the game. Because guys

(06:17):
do need reps at practice, they do need the mental
and the physical side of getting ready for a game.
So how do you weigh For instance, Orlando Brown Junior
doesn't play last week, he's questionable this week, means he's
not been on a practice field for a while. Now
do you ask him to go play at a high
level on the road against a really good football team.
How do you weigh that from a training standpoint of

(06:38):
rest versus guys needing reps on the field.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Well, you're obviously keeping him active, you know, whether it
be in the weight room with the strength coaches, whether
it's in non contact drills. On the field, you've got
to keep him active and mentally engaged. Because your everybody
thinks about the physicality of it, there's the mental side,
you know. And you remember when you used to get
hurt sometimes where we still have you on the field
going taking your mental reps. And you've got to do that.

(07:02):
Whether you're Orlando Brown or whether you're a college player.
You know, you've got to take your mental reps with
your with some low level physical reps at the same time.
But you can't replicate game speed. Yeah, you can't replicate
the adrenaline that comes with the game. And so you
do your best, and you've got to find the balance

(07:24):
between the rest and keeping them physically active, keeping them
mentally active. And it's it's not an easy job. It
takes a.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Team lastly on the back end of it. Now you
have the mini buy play Thursday. Most guys teams don't
play again to that following Sunday, so the buy can
be great, but you also don't just want to do nothing.
So how do you navigate You come out of a
short week mentally and physically demanding. You know, you've got

(07:53):
to give guys rest, but you don't want to rest
too long to where it takes them a lot longer
to start back up. So how do you navigate that
mini buy to get guys rested but also get back
to work.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
You know, instead of taking their two day off cycle.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Because you have that many buy, you know, it's probably
best if you stick with a normal schedule where you
come in the next day, do your film, do this,
take a day off the next day, then come back
and you know, go through some game prep, but then
taking another day off, you know, going into the next week.
So you kind of stick with a very similar schedule,
so the guys mentally are prepared for that same schedule.

(08:30):
I am a rest guy, so I mean I don't
mind a day off, but even in our days off,
our kids usually come into sports menace and we do
some recovery treatment. They might do some voluntary light stuff
in the in the weight room. I mean again, I'm
I'm blessed. I got Mike Rayfell with me down there
in our strength department, sports performance department, and Mike's really

(08:50):
great with you know, it's not heavy, it's just what
we call a recovery lift. Sure, and the kids just
go in and do some banded work, gets some stretching
and do this and makes him feel a little better
because you're flushing. You're trying to flush at your body
and get ready for the next game.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Bob, this is fantastic, so much better being able to
talk in studio with you.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
Well, it's fun to be here and watch your show live.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
You know.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
The only problem I got is you guys are wasting
all this time on the Bengals. I'm more concerned about
the Steeler five game Austin. What are we going to
do about him being a Steeler guy?

Speaker 4 (09:22):
I mean, I'm worried about Jayalen Daniels.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Yeah, is there anything at this point we can even
do for the guy?

Speaker 4 (09:26):
No, I mean he's far beyond repair.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
I mean it's clearly this is terminal.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Yeah, you could tell he is he's bought in. He's
been talking excessively during the breaks about Mike Williams and
how he's going to help the team in Preston Smith.
And yeah, Bob didn't know who Mike Williams was two
weeks now. He's big on Mike Tomlin. He's a huge
Mike Tomlin guy. It's just absolutely there is a sickness
that some people develop. And as good as Bob is,

(09:50):
there is that Steeler side of him that that does
make you question a lot of you know, is what
he's saying is something you can take to heart.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Are you from Pittsburgh, Bob, Oh, Yeah, north side of Pittsburgh,
not very far from where the stadium is.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Austin.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
And I do miss Marvin Lewis, though I will see
believe Fan yay and Tony knows that because I treated
a lot of the guys for Marvin wherever Marvin was
with the Bengals. So I do miss Marvin. And I
actually rooted for the Bengals. Wow, except on those Sunday

(10:24):
so special Sundays. Remember they got to play the Steelers.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Unbelievable. It is a special Sunday when you get to
play this Steeler that leads me into I'll tease it
for next segment. I have a stat oh the about
the game tonight that ties in a little bit to
the Pittsburgh store. Bob's gonna be down the stairs to
get to his car and turn the radio on. Unbelievable, Bob,
thank you for stopping by. Thanks Tony, appreciate this. That's
