Speaker 2 (00:21):
All right, you heard it right there. Thanks to Penn Station,
we're back. It's our three Sincy three sixty. Look, Reds
are off today. We've got nothing else that we can
absolutely discuss with the Cincinnati Reds. The draft is still
weeks away. What I want to dive into. We had
a chance to talk to Scott Saderfield. We talked little
spring ball yesterday, the University of Cincinnati. Let's talk some

(00:42):
Miami University as well. With my good friends here from
the Red Brick Legacy. They're back in studio today. Kyle Decker,
Mount McEwan back with us today. What's going on, fellas,
How are we doing? I'm phenomenal. Yeah, it couldn't be better.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Watching the Masters.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
We get to watch the masters in here. Get to
keep up with everything going on, keeping up with all
things NCAA transfer portal Nil. So this is a good
time that that we're able to connect because there's so
much now that's going on, and it just feels like
we used to term the other day of the Wild
Wild West, because you go back to those times you

(01:17):
kind of just made up rules on the fly, and
it feels like a lot of times that's what college
athletics is doing now. We're just making up rules as
we go. So, I know there's some big things going
on from a Miami standpoint. I know there's some big
things going on with Red Brick. Let's start. Tell me
about Miami Thrive and and what's going on. I know
you guys are trying to get a new basketball arena

(01:38):
with volleyball practice courts. Where do things stand with that
and where we are in the process. Yeah, So the
arena district is are labeling it.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
It's it's gonna be about a sixty five hundred square
or seat arena on cook Field. It's kind of highly
hre it is. It is hotly debated right now from
some Miami a lums as far as the location, so
cook Field versus some of the others. But if you've
been to Miami, as you go in huge field. Cook
Field is where they're going to put it. But I

(02:07):
love it. I think our administration, President Crawford is going
to you know, just jumping into athletics more than ever
got to give credit. I don't know if you know
Zach Haynes. This guy is moving moving some mountains at
Miami because the he's on the board there and he's
been the leader behind this project. And it's not easy
to get athletics at Miami, you know, front and center.
And I think this project, I mean it's going to

(02:29):
be over probably one hundred and fifty million dollar project. Yeah,
Mallet nineteen sixty eight. Dayton won't even come to play us.
It is a dungeon, as you know. I mean it is.
It is a place Travis the basketball. And I tell
this also, I think we all have young kids, and
if I'm sending my kid to Miami University, you know,
I talked to employers out there.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
They don't want to go to even do a job.
Fare at Mallett. I mean, it's just nasty right there.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
So this is going to have a hotel, it's gonna
be multipurpose type arena district.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
So we're gonna be able to tract.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
You know, employers, businesses, concerts, you know, hopefully even Snoop
Dog and know even talking about Snoop Big Bawl with
Mimi football, maybe get Snoop up. You know, we're gonna
be able to attract really good talent, I think, and
make the overall you know experience at college for Miami.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
You know, young students really really.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
You get functions and you mentioned concerts, entertainment. You can
bring business conferences in what I think is interesting. There's
two types, right because you could go malet and old
and storied and you kind of get that old school vibe.
But in today's world, especially coming off a year that
Travis Steel had with with Miami basketball, you're on the
up and up. You got to strike while the iron's hot,

(03:39):
and it becomes as much as we talk about nil,
it becomes a recruiting tool as well. I mean, you
see is going through the same thing with their their building,
the indoor facility. Right now, how important is it to
keep pace or to get into the level where you
can compete with the rest of the MAC and other
schools from a facility standpoint.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, no, I think we you know, as widely advertised
we lost to Akron right, and that's Travis's brother John,
and they have a great facility.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
We'll talk a little bit about.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
They have a really good Nilah and we've got to
catch up and make sure we can have the resources
to beat those guys. I mean, that's kind of the
group that we got to beat. And so I think
the part of the arena, I mean, it's gonna be beautiful.
I've seen some of the renderings. I mean, it's gonna
be fantastic. It's gonna put us in there in that
top I would say, hopefully seventy five even top fifty

(04:28):
type arena in the country. We'll see, But yes, I
think that helps one hundred percent. And you have a
great coach, as we all know. You have a really
strong nil right, which is really driving a lot of
the players, as we're going to talk about. And now
you have a great arena out of showcase, and it's
gonna be multipurpose, like you said for volleyball. So it's
gonna be a lot of opportunity for all student athletes

(04:49):
outside of just men's basketball to really showcase their talents.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Where do things stand from from an NIL standpoint Since
the last time we talked. I know it's just from
a conference dandoint from a national stand point. Uh you
send me some of the numbers from the Global NIL
Summit of conference and their average revenues that they're putting
to to basketball the Big East five point seven, ACC
four point four, which is crazy because when you think

(05:13):
of the ACC, they didn't have a ton of success
outside of Duke, but they're spending the money, uh SEC
at three point one the numbers just to try to
stay competitive. Right now, where do things stand? What's the
latest from an nil standpoint?

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Basketball is really getting inflated? Oh yeah, learning, learning a bunch.
I mean there's there's numbers between one to three million. Now,
so a lot of these players were you know, half
to one million. There were some above. But you know
there's guys. You know, I always say play guests the
nil game when I'm on your show. So I think
last time we talked about cam Ward being around two

(05:46):
point three confirmed. Can you imagine going from North Dakota
State to Virginia and get paid one point six million dollars?
I believe I said this is allegedly just to make
sure I hit trouble here. Jkari White is this guy's name,
But I have a lot of sources being in the
space that's around one point six to go to Virginia.

(06:07):
There is a high school kid that went to NC State,
Matthew Abel about over a million. So some of these
guys out of high school. So those are those are
two names I thought would bring in. I try to
keep the home front a little bit safe around here,
but there's there's some there's some movement.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
You know.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
I would say, uh, I'm not gonna go to exacts
about maybe someone that left Xavier, but he probably has
about got the half of what Xavier's overall budget was.
So there's some real real money flowing around the likes
of Louisville. I think with with uh, you know, coach
Miller leaving Xavier. Their budget is going up.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Is there a reason why it's going up? Is it
just because these guys and these kids are cashing in?
Is it because the landscape is changing?

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
It feels like every time we talk the prices go
up higher and higher and hire and you talk about
a guy like cam Ward, Okay, I can I can
somehow buy into that because he's probably gonna be the
first pick taking if you're you're taking guys that you're
you're taking guys on a flyer now and giving them
one one point five million dollars. That's a big, big
financial risk. It's a big investment.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
And if you look at Tony, you look at what
the numbers we talked about, I think the Big East
is moving the needle. So a non football conference, so
if you look at like the average, they're saying, the
average is five point seven in that conference. So if
you're looking at the Yukon's, the Creightons, and you see
the movements of even Xavier and the likes in that conference,
they can divert over twenty point five million with the

(07:31):
opt in. But they don't have football, yep, So legitimately
they could go to twenty point five million. And you
can actually see some of the other power fours are
saying whoa, whoa, whoa woa because they see the.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Big East money.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Because a lot of the twenty point five to football
school seventy to seventy five to up to eighty percent
of that's diverted over to football payroll. Sure, now the
rest of it is to like maybe ten fifteen percent
of men's basketball and others. So I think Big East
to answer why basketball is inflating, the Big East is
doubling down on being able to divert more of that.

(08:02):
And then I think that is creating the likes of
like the ACC in Louisville saying, whoa, whoa, we're having
some success.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Our program was down. Now they're doublee.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
You know they're going to say, okay, hey, we're diverting
over maybe five million, and you know there's there's likes.
I think some basketball nil programs could be up to
fifteen million this year at the top.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
So Matt my thing with that and hearing that, does
that become a worry for universities And let's just let's
be honest about it. You see, football has not been
where they needed to be the last couple of years.
If basketball were to turn it around next year and
you see football were to struggle or you see that
at a different university, does then that hurt the program
in the long run because you take funds out of

(08:41):
that to kind of go into the programs that are
winning it. It could be extremely detrimental to a football
program if and maybe put more pressure on the football
program to win.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Yeah, I think that that's a great point. I agree
with you. I you know, to what Kyle said, it's
you know, at some point there needs to be more
regular regulatory things and compliance related things put in, Like
maybe it's a salary cap type system where you know,
the market doesn't get reset it seems like every week
because it works like how NFL contracts work and how
contracts work in the pros where whenever somebody negotiates a

(09:16):
new deal and that resets the market. Well, then in
ANIL it works the same way where all right, I'm
a comparable player to this player, this player just got
X from this school, Well then I'm expected that my
value would be similar to that.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Right.

Speaker 5 (09:29):
And I think too a lot of universities and collectives
are really starting to mature relative to their donations and
fundraising strategy, really making it more of a focus to
where you're seeing more money come in. Right, But Tony,
it is it is crazy, and I think that you
know what you just brought up. It's going to be
really interesting to see what happens and how NIL funds

(09:50):
are managed at a university level, depending on which sport
is doing better.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Yeah, I think it can be a wormhole that you
dive into and some tough decision makers with those in
charge of how that money is going to be divvied up.
From a football standpoint for Miami, I know the off
season is already extremely busy for Chuck Martin. It doesn't stop.
I know the Red Hawk road Show is coming up
as well. Miami alum dot org follow along with Miami

(10:14):
Football on any of their social media's. But what's going
on with the road show here with the RedHawks. Yeah,
we're excited Tony to hit the hit the road.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
We're going to Chicago, Cleveland, in right here in Cincinnati.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
So definitely go to Miami.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
Alumni dot org or Miami RedHawks dot com either or
some of the social platforms.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
We'd love to have you there.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
We're getting coach Martin out on the road, so must
see TV. We're actually I was kind of talking to Matt.
Maybe we get you a show up at Kenwood. I'm
the help host over at KCC. Maybe get Tony Pike
being a little MC. I don't know what we can do.
There's a lot of rumors up in Oxford. They hear
these shows and they're like, is he ever gonna wear
some Miami gear?

Speaker 2 (10:54):
I've got gear. Can we get him around at the house.
I just haven't taken a picture yea with said gear. Yeah,
but no, it is uh from from an alumni standpoint,
like so much has changed, and if you're not living
in Miami or you don't have access, you don't get
a chance to to know what's going on. So you know,

(11:14):
for these to get a chance to hear from coach,
to talk in those types of settings and learn more
obviously helps grow the brand as well.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Yeah, we we have to educate, you know.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
I think you said Tony like, you know we're working
with you know, President Crawford. I mean you can see
like what Miami's doing with you know, being the official
university of the Cincinnati Bengals. By the way, in talks
about QB one, I think President Crawford might be competing
with the Bond fame for QB one in Oxford this year.
But you know, I think you can't go through the
airport right now. Shout out to Jessica Rivenous are head

(11:45):
of head of marketing. We're really putting the block m
you know around town, and I know, uh, you know
your Bearcats are as well. But I think we're really
making a conceded effort to one circle around ourselves around
athletics being the official you know, sponsor of University of
of the Cincinni Bengals.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
I think that that also got some I tell.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
You what, We're definitely help with that payroll over there. Yeah,
you know, it's a heavy bag with Burrow, Chase and Higgins.
Trying to get Hendrickson to Miami. Sponsorship is gonna help
you guys out. But the you know, I think getting
out like you said, Tony, you know, I fully expect
and I do hope that you know hasn't been said
or decided yet, but our school to jump in and

(12:24):
the revenue share we're gonna opt in. But how do
we divert revenue just like the others are diverting right,
And we need that support, you know, the program needs
it and we need to be able to also get
private funds.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
And you know.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
We've made some progress on the budget, but we got
a long way to go, like every time, like as
we talked about some serious, big numbers out there growing.
But we want to be best in the MAC, I think,
and we're really competing with Toledo at the top spot
in football and with Akron and basketball. But our coaches
have bigger aspirations than that. Yeah, and we're also trying
to make sure we give those resources. And part of

(12:59):
the road show is to get coach out there and uh,
let him, let him get it. He's he's awesome to
listen to. He's gonna be great to engage with, and
we're gonna go to the communities that support us.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
It's crazy to think you're talking about Akron great basketball season,
and because they have that the revenue, they're bringing a
lot of that roster back yep, Whereas in today's world
you see him, they would just the players would leave.
They have to be doing well from an aile standpoint
because they had success, and they're bringing a lot of
those guys back. So you see directly how those those
top spender, the top earners are able to keep that

(13:31):
core together.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
You have to be clear, they went they have a
seven figure budget. Yeah, we're a fraction of that in basketball. Yeah,
and we have to address it, you know. And and
that's what Travis deserves. I think he has the and
that's part of our goal. But like he has we
you know, he wants to beat his brother, you know,
Miami wants to beat Acron and we want to go
and be in the field of sixty eight and go dancing.

(13:52):
And and Travis you know, had breakfat him yesterday. You know,
he is locked in man like. He has opportunities as
you can imagine. I'm sure he's getting but he he uh,
you know, he's working. And I think President Crawford in
the in the in the higher ups, like I mentioned
Zach Haynes, Uh, they're all engaged with how do we
compete at the highest level and are not just in

(14:13):
our conference but in there. And I fully expect that
we're going to continue to make steps in the arena.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
You know, is a is a voie. It's gonna be one.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Hundred and fifty to probably a two hundred million dollar project.
That's a that's a big step in the direction for
Miami Athletics. Yeah, to say hey, we're we're not going
You hear some schools, Hey we're going to d three sports.
You know, you can see that. I think it was
what Saint Francis. Yep, There's gonna be other schools that
are going to do that. I think Miami's taking the
stance that hey, we're going to dive into this thing
and we're going to compete, which I love.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
Obviously, it takes backing as well, it takes sponsors, it
takes deals and and and endorsements that that you are
our guys are working on as well. I know we've
we've talked about the Bourbon Front. What is the latest
from a next step standpoint that you guys have going on.
I know you talked about a beer deal going on
as well.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, so that's that.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
It's really kind of in a really good spot. So
initially we tried to launch before Green Bear Day, which
green Bearder is a big bit.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
Of Miami, but unfortunately that was a little bit rush.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
So now we've aligned to a beer name that's gone
through all the hurdles, which we're calling Uptown Light is
the brand. So Uptown's got a really cool connection with Miami.
So if you're Miami alum, if you say the word Uptown,
I think anywhere everybody knows what that means. And then
Uptown has a lot of nostalgia and other connections across
other different cities in the United States, which checked a

(15:30):
lot of boxes for us. So look out for more
product updates relative to the brand drop and just the artwork,
but could not be more excited. Spoke with the folks
that Sincinty Beverage Company yesterday and they're ready, full steam ahead.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
So we're looking forward to.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
That next steps outside of that, different avenues you guys
are looking into too attacking, because, like you said, it's
hard because this world of nil, you never get to
a point where you're just like, all right, cool, we
can just kind of relax. Yeah, you don't get to
where you can put it in neutral and just kind
of cruise on through. I would guess like everything in college,
it's it's ever evolving and just constantly looking for what's next.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Yeah, we're excited. We officially have our our first employee.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
So can we go there?

Speaker 6 (16:13):
We go?

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Yeah, you guys, don't you guys need Yeah, Chase Collins
at the Chase College.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
You guys, guys, you guys be funny Like schools like Louisville,
I go visit they got like twenty you know, we
got our first. But hey, we're making our our our
step in the right direction. The hybrid model. We're working
with the schools that we're talking about. As mentioned Amy Shoemaker,
she came from Louisville she's our head of legal. Fantastic.
Like I said, it takes it from the top down.

(16:39):
I think we have a really good cabinet at Miami
University that are engaged from legal to as I mentioned
in marketing and now President Crawford to our board like
Zach Haynes. So right now, I feel like we have
the team to compete in athletics from the top down
and their engagement. And I think you're going to see
that with with a multitude of different things we're doing.
But uh yeah, so we're gonna Matt and I are

(17:01):
going to work on a lot of those different in
chase the LLC piece of it, which is going to
focus on a lot of the partnerships Tony, as you
mentioned with the beer, the bourbon, some of the other
ideas like the road show, marketing components, and continue just
to think we're even talking about selling some five G
and tennas out in the world. There's all sorts of
stuff out there, right whatever we got to do.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
Man, Like we're we're not.

Speaker 4 (17:23):
We're a little different than some of those other power
forwards and some of their but we're we're focused on
our space. As we mentioned, we want to be first
best in the MAC and we're not there yet. That's
one thing We've been consistent, and I think we got
our eyes locked into what that's going to take, and
we're going to get there and then hopefully take the
next steps after that.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Awesome.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
I always appreciate you guys stopping by more information. People
want to help in any way. What's the easiest way.
Where do you direct them to them?

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Yeah, RedBrick Legacy dot com or as mentioned if the
road show just real quick, Tony, we we have those
three locations, one being in Chicago, Cleveland and then here
in Cincinnati is June six. I want to make sure
that's clear that Ken ken Wood and I believe maybe
we'll have a Tony Pike appearance. We go, Man, we're
gonna have a little We got some negotiating to do.

Speaker 6 (18:09):
Maybe we'll be back in Maybe I'm a portal my
Goodness's numbers. Yeah, we missed the boat on recruiting you
in high school. This is the full circle moment. It's
never too late, man.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
We're gonna have to make an offer to get you
to uh see the Red Brick Road Show ken Wood
with Coach Martin. I can't imagine, like you and then
Coach Martin up there. Man, that would be god. We
get President Crawford throwing some footballs in the in the inc.
I mean you got to see that video, man, if
you haven't seen it yet, President Crawfords throwing like a
post route on on Acre Field and I'm like, dude,

(18:45):
this guy he's got arm to him.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
A little bit of a little bit of a howitzer.
He's all in. Man.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
I love it. Fantastic. You guys are awesome.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
Man.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
Thanks for coming by RedBrick Legacy dot com to UH
to learn more and we'll talk again soon. Every time
we talk, it's growing. We're in a good spot. We're
in a good spot. We gotta take a break, UH
Nova Care doctor John Devine just man our next since
he three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
