This is Skyline Chile. Since hethree to sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati,
sponsored in part by Skyline Chile.Stop by Skyline Chili for a three way
or cheeze Cony today. Feeling good, It's Skyline time. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Hi, Hello and welcome in Sincy. Three
(00:24):
sixty ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's SportsStation. I am Austin Elmore with you
for the next three hours up untilthree pm. I'll be writing solo for
the next couple of weeks. Ifyou've been living under a rock, let
me inform you with Tony Pike andhis lovely wife Meredith have given birth to
(00:45):
their third child, Walker Kent.Pike has joined the world and Tony's going
to be out for a little whileas he is with his family and all
things seem to be good, healthy, everyone doing well. Spoke briefly with
the Pike family last night. Theyare in good spirits and excited about their
new addition. Tony has posted somephotos on his social media on Twitter on
(01:10):
Instagram at Tony Underscore Pike fifteen.Go check them out and give him some
love and if you go to hisInstagram account and look at the photo he
posted. I made a comment onthat, and I would like you to
go like my comment. We cantalk about that a little bit later on.
We've got a lot to talk aboutactually today and I'm excited about it,
(01:33):
excited about the next couple of weeksto kind of do things a little
bit differently. And you know, during the course of the summer, sometimes
we can get stale, and sometimeswe kind of get into a habit or
maybe a routine that we shouldn't andso maybe this will be good for us
to maybe freshen things up, changethings around a little bit, just do
things different for you, for us, for everybody involved. And looking forward
(01:53):
to that and looking forward to havingTony back obviously when he returns. Let's
start the day well before we getinto some of the other stuff. I
do want to say this because overthe last month or so, Tony and
I have been dealing with two veryopposite ends of the spectrum. He is
(02:15):
anxiously awaiting the newest addition to hisfamily and a third baby, and I
have been dealing with the decline andhealth of my grandmother. And yesterday we
had her funeral service and her viewingand laid her to rest and all of
that, and it was a really, really emotional day for me. It
was way harder than I thought itwas going to be. And I posted
(02:38):
some things about my grandma on Instagramand Twitter, and so many people said
so many unbelievably kind things to meand to my family, and I really
appreciate that because I did not anticipatestruggling the way that I did yesterday,
and seeing all of that really didmake me feel better and helped me to
(03:00):
appreciate all the support that I haveand subsequently that my family had over the
last week or so as we aswe said goodbye to her, so seriously,
from the bottom of my heart, thank you for that, because it
did mean a lot to me,and it did help me during the course
(03:20):
of what was a really difficult dayfor me yesterday. Thankfully, we get
to move on from the difficult partsof life and we get to talk about
sports, which is the easy partof life. And we'll talk about the
Reds a little bit. At thebeginning of our number two. We'll do
talkbacks in their normal spot. Atthe beginning of our number three, we'll
(03:43):
talk to Joe Daniman who will bewrapping up as we speak. Bengals Mandatory
Mini Camp Day two yesterday, JoeBurrow through yesterday Joe Burrow spoke, we'll
hear from Joe. We'll get myreaction to Joe and some of the things
that he said. I also wantedto play a couple of clips from the
(04:04):
conversation that Paul Dayner Junior had withMoegger yesterday on his show that I found
to be interesting, and we'll kindof break down that. We'll do mainly
Bengals an hour one, we'll doReds mainly an hour two, Bengals,
Red's Mixed Bag of Everything, anhour three. Mo will be here for
quick Hits and Locks of the Night. Looking forward to that. But before
(04:29):
we go any further, let's reviewthe power the top stories from yesterday in
sports, brought to you by ourfriends at Klaus Roofing and Klaus Roofing System
of Cincinnati as your trusted local roofingand gutter company. Visit KRS Cincy with
a y dot com. Red's fallyesterday game one of the Ohio Cup to
(04:50):
the Cleveland Guardians at Great American BallparkCleveland. Won't be here again until like
the final four games of the season. I think the Reds play two of
those final score five to three bullpengame where just about everybody pitched for the
Reds. It was Suitor Martinez,Mole, Sam Simms, Wilson, Cruz
(05:10):
Farmer, they all pitched and pitchedin and part of that game. Reds.
With another off day tomorrow, they'reback at it again tonight. I
would imagine because of how many guysdid end up throwing yesterday, that there
will be some sort of a movemade to bring up a fresher arm tonight.
I saw Lance McAllister pontificating about that. Perhaps Casey Legomina is one of
(05:31):
those guys. Red's back in actiontonight. Nicolodolo will get the start,
and not only is it Game twoof the Ohio Cup, but it is
Ellie de la Cruz Bobblehead Night,Ellie de la Cruz City Connect Bobblehead Night
at Great American Ballpark tonight. Listenlast year when the Guardians came to town,
(05:53):
it was packed at GABP for bothof those games. It was packed
last night edge BP, and itis going to be packed again tonight with
an off day coming and then aroad trip for the Reds. And on
top of all of that, thethe Ellie Da La Cruz bibblehead. They
sent some of them to the tothe studios for US earlier this week or
(06:15):
last week. They're really cool. The entire City Connect series of bibbleheads has
been awesome and they continue to doit. This is a little bit of
a different one. This is Elliestealing a base in the City Connect uniform.
I posted a photo of it atAudio more Au t y E l
m o r E on Twitter.Go check that out. And if you
haven't already decided, make tonight thenight that you go down to the ballpark.
(06:38):
I'll be there. I look forwardto hopefully running into you and certainly
look forward to getting my hands onan Ellie d La Cruz bobblehead tonight.
As I mentioned, Nicko Lodolo goesother big stories yesterday. Outside of the
fact that Joe Burrow was throwing isthe fact that Joey Chestnut listen, this
is you know, you think thingscan't get work? And then Joey Chestnut
(07:01):
is apparently banned from the Nathan's FamousHot Dog Eating Contest or whatever they call
themselves. On the fourth of July. We've talked about this before. Joey
Jaws is an American icon, He'sa legend, he's a hero, and
I love the Hot Dog Eating Contest. It's one of my favorite things in
the history of anything ever. AndJoey Chestnuts specifically, I think is just
(07:24):
a hilarious human being. So himgetting banned because he signed a deal with
a company that produces vegan meat. However, you would like me to say
that I don't care vegan stuff toeat that is considered a rival and a
competitor of Nathan's, which means he'sineligible to compete in this hot dog eating
(07:46):
contest. Apparently he had turned downa four year deal worth over a million
dollars from the Nathan's company to goand pursue this deal with this in this
other impossible meat brand, and thatthen means that he's unable to perform in
the hot dog Eating contest. We'lltalk more about this later on, but
(08:07):
that was certainly a story that leda lot of things yesterday, as was
the fact that John Rahm will bewithdrawing from the US Open due to a
blister and an infection that he hason one of his toes Ram, of
course, a major champion in thepast, and somebody looking to get the
US Open under his belt. USOpen coming up this weekend, first round
(08:28):
starting tomorrow from Pinehurst to Pinehurst numbertwo, where Big Tone played earlier this
summer. Maybe we'll call Tony onFriday, get an update on the kid,
and maybe give us an update onhow he would be approaching the US
Open. I think he did allthis on purpose. You know, you
can plan these things out to anextent. What a great sports weekend.
You've got Stanley Cup Final, NBAFinals, College World Series, US Open,
(08:54):
Father's Day. There's a whole lotof stuff going on. I think
Tony did this on purpose, andmaybe we'll check in with him coming up.
You know, a lot of peoplegot mad that Ian Rappaport tweeted about
the fact that Jamar Chase was atpractice yesterday and that he's seeking a new
contract. Ian just simply posted thetruth, and people think that the national
(09:16):
media is out to get the Bengals. I don't think that's the case,
but interesting nonetheless that people reacted theway that they did. I have no
worries about Jamar Chase being a futurea Bengal for the future. I don't
think you should either. I alsodon't think this is anything we're going to
be talking about for the foreseeable futureyesterday. What I mean by is nothing's
(09:39):
going to happen soon. This willbe a topic next summer, not this
summer. When it comes to JamarChase t Higgins not there, still hasn't
signed his franchise tender. I don'tthink we'll see t Higgins until the end
of August. I'm not too worriedabout that. Joe Burrow talked about that.
We'll get into that a little bitcoming up. Joe Burrow not the
EA Sports Madden NFL twenty five coverathlete that goes to Christian McCaffrey of the
(10:03):
San Francisco forty nine ers. Iknow that people make fun of me.
I know that people call me anidiot. I know that some people believe
curses don't exist. I disagree withall of that, and I found it
as a sire relief when I felta sigh of relief when Joe Burrow was
(10:24):
well, I should say, whenChristian McCaffrey was announced as the cover athlete
for Madden NFL twenty five. Solooking forward to playing that looking forward to
playing the EA Sports College Football Gameas well. You know I should have
asked Tony. I've been meaning toask him this. They put legends in
this new college football game. Ithink Tony qualifies as a legend, certainly
(10:46):
for the University of Cincinnati. Iwonder what his rating would be. I
wonder if he's been contacted by anyoneabout this. I think that would be
interesting, and I think that'd becool for Bearcat fans and for us if
Tony somehow ends up in the game, because I know they're doing some sort
of if. This could be acompletely foreign language to some of you,
(11:07):
but Ultimate Team is a really populargame mode and a lot of these EA
Sports games, and you could seepeople like Tony Pike in there. What
else do we have? Aaron Rodgersis not at Jets mandatory mini camp.
He wasn't there yesterday, he's notthere today. He's apparently skipping it because
(11:28):
of an event that is important tohim, some sort of trip that he's
going on. This is the sameAaron Rodgers who said anybody who is distracting
the New York Jets from getting towardswinning should be out of the building.
Well, Aaron Rodgers is not inthe building. He seems like a hypocrite.
I like Aaron Rodgers seems like ahypocrite the way he is handling that.
(11:50):
We will have more information from Bengalsmini camp later on today a locker
room will be open. We'll hearfrom a couple of other players. I
would imagine we'll hear from Jamar Chasewhen the media gets a chance to talk
to him. They obviously talked toJoe Burrow yesterday. I would imagine we'll
hear from Chase today and again atthe top of the third three, the
two o'clock hour, the third hourof the show, we will hear from
(12:15):
Joe Daneman from Fox nineteen. AllRight, I think that basically covers everything
in terms of what we have goingon, what we can possibly be talking
about, what we will continue totalk about over the course of the next
three hours, over the course ofthe next few weeks. Uh. The
thing to me that is story numberone is Joe Burrow and listening to him.
(12:41):
And we're gonna play some of that. And by the way, phone
lines are open five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen
thirty. We're gonna play a fewminutes of Joe coming up in a little
bit, and it sounded like tome a man who is a lot more
reflective, a lot more mature,a lot more understanding of himself. And
I thought there was a really interestingquestion asked by Kelsey Conway about the mental
(13:05):
side of things for him. AndI think back to and I've been thinking
deeply a lot lately for obvious reasons, and certainly about life, and as
Joe put it yesterday, football mortality. I think a lot about the maturity
that happens from the age of twentyfive to thirty. I'm living that right
(13:28):
now. I've experienced a lot ofdifferent things over the last couple of years,
and I think back to when Iwas twenty five, and I think,
boy was that kid stupid? Hehad no idea. There's just so
many parts of life, and youmight experience this, you might feel this
way too, of like the thingsyou just didn't understand when you were twenty
(13:48):
five. And I think by thetime I got to twenty seven, I
was thinking that way about twenty fiveyear old me, and now that I'm
twenty nine, I'm thinking that wayabout twenty five and twenty seven year old
me. And that's where Joe Burrowis at, not only in this time
period of significant mental and maturity andgrowth, but also as a guy who
(14:13):
feels pressure and a guy who's beeninjured, and a guy who signed all
this money, and a guy whohas every single little thing he does under
a microscope. I feel bad forhim in that sense. I feel bad
for him that everything he does isnews. The way he what cleats he
(14:33):
decides to wear, or what colorhis arm sleeve is, or whether or
not he's wearing an arm sleeve,or what his relationship status is, or
whether or not he's going to beon a video game, or what type
of jersey he's wearing, or howintense his throws are and what exactly is
the injury and what does the doctorknow and what is the plan? And
(14:56):
he didn't throw and every little thingthat the the guy does is constantly under
a microscope. That's got to drivehim nuts. And it's kind of getting
to the point where it's starting todrive me nuts. I understand the Bengals
go as Joe Burrow goes. I'mnot an idiot. I get that part
of how all of this works. And I know that fans feel pressure because
(15:22):
they know Joe is the super Bowlwindow, and Joe has said that himself,
He's brought some of that upon himself. I get that, and I
understand that the fans look around andsay, man, I hope this injury
thing isn't real. I hope thatthis really not He's really not an injury
prone guy, and I hope that, truthfully he's able to bring a super
Bowl to Cincinnati, and people arekind of worried about. I hope he's
(15:43):
not Aaron Rodgers where he goes toone and never goes back. Or I
hope he's not Dan Marino where hegoes to one and he never goes back.
And that's legitimate concern. Those thingskeep me up at night two.
But sometimes when evaluating a twenty fiveyear old kid in terms of the way
he's handling himself and the way he'sa leader of a franchise and whether or
(16:07):
not he's in commercials or looking atthe camera on the Bengals social media team
or participating in a folding event orwhatever it might be, it feels like
logic has left the room. Evaluatinghim as a quarterback and a teammate and
a young man. In the waythat he is recovering from this injury and
(16:32):
the way that he's handling it,it feels like logic has left the room.
I get that he's a big deal, but where where have we lost
sight of that guy's a human beingtoo, And from a logical standpoint,
he's not going to be one hundredpercent yet. And we'll talk about this
(16:53):
more after we hear from Joe,but it feels like people have lost sight
of the fact that this dude ishe's a human being, and he had
a major, major injury that knockedhim out of the season in November,
and all the stuff that we're seeingis not stuff that's supposed to be concerning.
(17:15):
It's supposed to be encouraging. Thathe's changed the way he's looked at
himself as a quarterback, the waythat he rehabs, the way that he
approaches injury, the way that heworks. He's gotten older and he's matured,
and he's realized, I don't haveto do all the things I used
to do now I've gotten here.I can adjust the knobs slightly here and
(17:40):
there instead of totally cranking one thingup the volume all the time. We're
learning that, and Joe Burrow islearning that, and we're seeing that before
our eyes. And I think somepeople are getting lost in the idea of
this is the end of the worldfor the Bengals, or this isn't good,
or he's not ready, as opposedto this is life and he had
a serious injury and it's not goingto be perfect right away, and they
(18:03):
don't play for another ninety days orwhatever it might be. It's a long
way to go between now in Septembereighth. Phone lines are open five point
three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. You can also tweet
at me at audiellmore Au t yELMRI. I would be remiss if I
did not say at the end ofthis segment, or at any point during
(18:23):
the first segment, rest in peaceto the great Jerry West. Jerry West
passed away earlier today at the ageof eighty six. He was an icon
in the game of basketball. Hewas one of those guys who was a
legend among legends. He was thelogo. He was a nine time NBA
(18:45):
champion, eight times as an executive, one time as a player, the
only player to ever win NBA FinalsMVP on the losing team. He was
unbelievable and his impact on basketball isstill being felt today and will be felt
for the rest of time. AdamSilver, the NBA Commissioner, said this
(19:07):
in a statement. Jerry West wasa basketball genius and a defining figure in
our league for more than sixty years. He distinguished himself not only as an
NBA champion and an All Star andfourteen of his playing seasons, but also
as a consummate competitor who embraced thebiggest moments. He was the league's first
Finals MVP and made rising to theoccasion his signature quality, earning him the
(19:32):
nickname Mister Clutch. Silver goes onto say Jerry's four decades with the Lakers
also included a successful stint as ahead coach and a remarkable run in the
front office that cemented his reputation asone of the greatest executives in sports history.
He helped build eight championship teams duringhis tenure in the NBA, a
(19:52):
legacy of achievement that mirrors his onon court excellence, and he will be
enshrined this October into the Nation.Smith Basketball Hall of Fame is a contributor
becoming the first person ever inducted asboth a player and a contributor. Adam
Silver finishes the statement by saying,I valued my friendship with Jerry and the
(20:12):
knowledge he shared with me over manyyears about basketball and life. On behalf
of the NBA. We send ourdeepest condolences to Jerry's wife, Karen,
his family, and his many friendsin the NBA community. Adam Silver,
NBA Commissioner. Jerry West was awesome. If you've listened to me at all,
(20:32):
I followed me along at all.You know I'm a big fan of
Dan Patrick and the Dan Patrick Show, and Dan was very close friends with
Jerry West and had him on hisshow a lot. And today Dan on
the air learning of Jerry's death andstruggling through that. I thought was first
of all, very very cool ofDan and very vulnerable and human of Dan
(20:56):
to do that. And I thoughtit was terrific radio. And my heart
went out to all the people thatknew Jerry West liked that and were heartbroken
over his loss. Truly, oneof the all time greats in the history
of sports was Jerry West. We'lltake a break, we'll come back,
We'll continue talking. Some Bengals We'llget some reds in there. Joe Danaman
(21:19):
later talkbacks quick hits, locks inthe night, all of it coming up
between now and three o'clock. You'relistening to the Home of the Bengals,
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Hey,Alexa, who's on the cutter. Crawford
looking in, gets his sign fromConnor Wong. The line up in the
pitch swung on. That one's indeep. You can forget about it.
That one is not coming back.Another home run for Kyle Schwarber, his
(21:41):
second of the night, his thirteenthof the year, and the Phillies lead
at four to one. Kyle Schwarberggoes deep twice last night for the Philadelphia
Phillies. That call courtesy of WIP, the Philadelphia Phillies Radio Network, and
Kyle Schwarber becomes our power player ofthe game, brought to you by Cincinnati
(22:02):
Tax Resolution powered by Tave Sheldon.Have no fear toaf is here and uh,
how about this from Kyle Schwarber. The Middletown native became the most efficient
home run hitter in the month ofJune in al NL history. Schwarber is
now averaging one home run every tenpoint four at bats in the month of
(22:26):
June. That moves ahead of BabeRuth. I'll say it again, Babe
Ruth, who had a ten pointsix number for the best June mark of
all time. That's stat coming toyou from Paul Cassella for Major League Baseball
and MLB Stats. Kyle Schwarber playinga lot of long ball as the Phillies
remain on fire, beating the RedSox last night. Okay, a lot
(22:49):
of stuff to talk about. Itcould be Burrow, it could be Jerry
West, it could be anything you'dlike it to be. And the phone
lines are open at five point three, seven, four, nine fifteen.
Party your reaction to all that isgoing on in the world of sports.
Let's start in Burlington where Bob isstanding by. Hello, Bob, Hey,
howdy, how are you. I'mdoing well. Hey, sorry to
(23:11):
hear about your grandmother. I wantedto share with you a little a story
I have about Jerry West that Ionly learned about recently while listening to Dan
Patrick interview him. When I wasin I was in high school in the
nineteen eighties out on the East Sideat glenn Esdi had a biology teacher who
just loved my printing. I printedneat because I was a horrible writer.
(23:33):
My cursive was awful, and Ilove the guy taught me a lot and
we had a real good connection.Bob Clawson was his name. Years later
I found out mister Clawson passed away, and lo and behold who was at
his funeral? But Jerry West.Really I had no idea that Bob clawsan
our biology teacher, was the centeron the West Virginia team that was in
(23:56):
the finals with Jerry West. Wewere friends till the day he died.
And listening to Dan Patrick a coupleof months ago interview West, he was
talking about how he absolutely stresses andloves neat printing and handwriting, and I'm
like, wait a minute, thatall makes sense. They were best friends
(24:18):
in college and they both had thisaffinity for neat handwriting and printing. And
I said, it all makes sensethat my teacher and him that shared that
same quality. So now I kindof have in my heart a special place
not only for the teacher that Ihad no idea shared that experience with Jerry
West, but now Jerry West, who who you know? It just it's
one of those things where it reallydoes put everything into perspective. Yeah,
(24:41):
and you know, I felt likeI lost a dear teacher and a friend
when when my teacher passed away. But now I feel like I've lost,
you know, another friend when Jerrypassed away. So anyway, I'll be
listening to the rest of the dayand I can't wait to hear all the
tributes of Jarry. And again, accept our condolences for your grandmother. We're
(25:03):
all going through it in one wayor another in our lives and it's never
easy, but hanging there, itgets better. Bob, Thank you very
much. That's very kind to you. Man, Thank you. Take care.
That's a really cool story to loand behold. There's Jerry West and
to just kind of connect over somethinglike that. I remember I've heard stories
about Jerry's signature and his penmanship andhow that was a big part of his
(25:26):
life and the details and the smallerthings are a big deal. So that's
really cool. That's a really coolconnection to Jerry West. I'm sure this
guy has something to say about thelogo Jerry West, Mike and La.
What's up man? Hey, plI'm sorry to hear about grandma. Seems
like I'm going dealing myself with alot of death anymore. I thought that
(25:49):
was over in Vietnam. But I'lltell you, when you get older,
people just start you know, allyour in laws and relatives are, where
your aunts and uncles and grandparents, they all start going because bye bye,
and it's spooky. So my heartwas with you when I heard it.
All. Thanks. I appreciate that, great hope. You got great fond
memories of your grandma, and thatwas cool. You went down and showed
(26:11):
her the respect that she deserved.I get joked up talking about this stuff.
Yeah, yeah, Jerry West,Oh yeah, it was the wisdom
thing. Man. Wait till yousee the wisdom you pick up between thirty
and seventy, this one getting yourbutt kick founding. Yeah, I still
learn every day. And you know, you get older and you really do
think you know a lot, butyou really don't know. Crap, it's
(26:36):
Jerry West. I don't know whatto say. I was, I mean,
I wasn't not expecting it when theyknew how old he was. But
I'm going to give a quick whitneyon him. First of all, his
nickname was Zeke from Cabin Creek.Little did he nothing place in West Virginia,
came from nothing and a strange father, dirt poverty band, dirt,
(26:57):
poor cab and all that up andself made completely. So he averaged dude.
In one NBA Finals he and theylost. He averaged forty fust points
a game. He's the only guyto ever do that, to ever average
over forty points a game for evena winner, let alone a loser.
(27:17):
Greatest administrator, everybody agrees with thatin any professional sport. I can't think
of anybody. I listened to someexperts today and they all kind of agreed.
Fourteen All Star Games and the startedstarting guards for fourteen years in a
row were Jerry and Oscar Robertson. It was just a given. That's how
(27:38):
it was. And tonight they're goingto do a nice tribute to for Jerry
before the finals game, right,So I think that's really showing some good
respect. Speaking of that, werSingez is out for the rest of the
series. And here's the interesting importanceof that. We know he was important,
but the fifty two minutes that hewas on the bench in these first
(28:02):
few games, they're one oh nineone oh nine both teams, soal points.
The minutes he was on the floor, it flops twenty five points in
favor of the Celtics. Isn't thatan incredible start? Yeah, that really
is. And Mike, I gotsome other calls. Thank you for the
phone call, and I certainly willbe looking forward to the tribute for Jerry
(28:22):
West coming up tonight during the NBAFinals Game three, and how the NBA
will handle that and hopefully kind ofopen Dallas wins kind of brings some more
interest back to this NBA Finals withBoston up two. Oh, let's go
to Alexandria where Chris is standing by. What's up? Chris? Hey,
Audie, I was sorry to hearabout your grandma. Best wishes to you
(28:45):
and your family. Appreciate thank you. Yeah, Hey, I you said
something that really resonated with me todayand I wanted to address it because it's
I think it's such an impressive thing. I think about my growth period in
my life twenty five to thirty.I was a little bit of a late
bloomer, but really I became anadult year twenty eight. I mean that
(29:07):
I had to make some major changesand I had to make some big decisions
about where I wanted my life togo. Now, I had some help
with that because of some things thatI had done to myself. But you
know, I really see people aswho they are at and I think that's
the thing when you're talking about JoeBurrow. I love that you came from
(29:29):
this angle of your life and Ithink now to set your own horn,
Audie, but that one of myfavorite things about you is how self aware
you are for your age. AndI love that you're constantly looking at yourself,
looking at your growth and knowing whereyou were coming from and looking back
and evaluating. And I think that'sa sign of somebody who's trying to live
(29:51):
healthy and so good for you, man, And I think that I mean
healthy in a way like you know, doing okay, you know what I
mean. Yeah, Joe Burrow likehe's he's in that moment, and you
brought that up, and I thinkpeople completely lose sight of that because of
the money or because of the status. But when I heard him talk yesterday,
(30:15):
he's taken a step yeah, AndI love that Sarah addressed that.
I mean she came right at itand was like, mentally, like,
what is that like to have toconstantly be coming back from from injury and
constantly rehabbing, and then all thepeople start talking because, like you said,
he's not that far away from peopleturning on him. You said that
(30:37):
when he signed the contract, yousaid, you watch what happens. People
will turn on him if things gothe other way. And for him to
be self aware enough to say,I'm an, I need to change the
way I approached some of these situationsand not push myself because I got to
play the long game. And youhear that, and you're like, Oh,
this kid's grown up before our eyes. We forget. He didn't come
to us a fully developed adult. He's a kid that's growing up. And
(31:03):
I don't know. I was justreally impressed yesterday. I heard something different
from him, and I was reallyimpressed by that, and I was encouraged
by that, and thank you foraddressing it. And I just wanted to
give you props on that, Chris, Thank you very much. I appreciate
those kind words. And it soundslike you and I heard the same thing.
You know, which is a kidthat is, you know, twenty
(31:25):
seven years old. He's two yearsyounger than me, but he is he's
a kid that is going through anexperience of learning and learning about life and
learning about how to be a professionaland banking, all these reps of being
a football player and a franchise playerand all this other stuff. And Joe's
been through a lot of crap inhis life too, especially when it comes
(31:45):
to football. And now it's like, Okay, I've gotten to this point.
How do I make this work? You're trying to put the pieces together?
And I think what I have inare realm of things. And I
think Tony has this too, especiallywhen it comes to Joe Burrow and Tony
even more so than me. Joeis essentially the same age as me,
(32:07):
and he grew up just like Idid, in a small town in Ohio,
and he had dreams just like Idid, and he's achieved those and
I've achieved an entirely different set ofdreams. Although at some point, I'm
sure we both wanted to be thequarterback of an NFL team. But I
just find myself relating to him inso many different ways, maybe more than
(32:28):
some of the other people in ourarea and maybe some of the other people
in our profession. And I knowTony can do this too, because they
both got to that level, andTony was from a small town in Ohio,
and I just I can empathize withthat now because I grew up a
little bit more recently and much moreat the same age as Joe, and
I feel like I understand more ofthe world around us, and it's not
(32:52):
easy and looking inside and figuring out. God, I love this thing that
I'm doing, but I have tochange. I'm in a way going through
that in my career right now aswell of like, how can I be
this guy? How can I takethe next step in my profession. I've
(33:13):
had meetings with people about how tofigure that out. How do I bridge
the gap between what a Lance isand a mo is and a Tony is,
and how do I create my ownpath? And there are parts of
me that I'm going to have toadjust to get there. I'm learning it
on the fly. I'm asking forhelp for I'm asking for help from people.
(33:36):
And so I feel like I relateto Joe in a lot of different
ways. Now. There's obviously somesignificant differences that affect his life way more
than mine will ever be affected. But I look at a guy yesterday and
I say that dude has taken astep forward and he is going through this
(33:57):
period of change in his life inwhich he's got here. Now he's figuring
out how to keep hold of it, how to maximize it, how to
grow it, and how to bethe best version of himself. And I
think what we've seen from Joe overthe last two months is progress, not
only as a quarterback, but progressas a human being. And that's a
(34:22):
really, really good thing to have. We'll take a break, We'll be
back. We'll take a couple ofmore phone calls. Five point three seven
four nine, fifteen thirty. TheHome of the Bengals and Joe Burrows,
ESPN fifteen thirty, Looking welcome backsince he three to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty,
(34:44):
Cincinnati Sports Station, Brought to youby our friends at Skyline, Chile.
Quick update from Bengals mandatory mini camptoday. Everybody present and accounted for
except for Drew Sample. Drew Samplehas missed his second straight day. He
does have an excused absence for that. Couple of guys not practicing. Chase
(35:05):
Brown, second year running back outof Illinois and Jamar Chase going through install
but is not doing seven on sevensor drills, hanging out with the wide
receivers. He's there, he's around, he's just not participating in practice.
No helmet, no cleats, nothinglike that. Probably not a big surprise.
Does seem to be that Dax Hillis playing pretty well and getting some
chances with the number one defense atoutside cornerback. That it's something to keep
(35:30):
an eye out on. We'll talkto Joe Daneman from Fox nineteen about that
coming up at two o'clock. We'llalso at two o'clock tomorrow talk Reds and
Bengals with Mike Petrellia from CLNS Mediaand get his perspective on both of those
as he covers both, and lookingforward to that conversation as well. Excuse
(35:52):
me, all right, let's getback to the phones. Five one,
three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. We've talked about life
and death and football mortality and maturityand logical thinking and all sorts of things.
It's been a relatively deep first hourhere of since the three sixty.
Let's go to Virginia where Jeff isstanding by. What's up, Jeff,
Happy Wednesday, Austin, big bigshout out to Tony, big condolences to
(36:16):
you. Thanks. I'm expecting Einsteinor Copernicus to call in sometimes today at
some of the levels that we got, No kidding. The first person I
thought of yesterday when I heard theJoey chestnutt news was you, and I
knew where you were, and I'mlike, God, when is Austin going
to find that about this? Yeah, thankfully we were at the eating portion
(36:39):
of the day and uh there wasa chestnut debate around the table, So
it was good. We don't needAustin to spontaneously combusted in a celebration of
life, that's for sure. AndHappy Ricky Carter Day. By the way,
yes post that was one year agotoday. I'm going to get to
that a little bit later on.I got the audio from the final out
(37:00):
of the Ricky Kartterer game. Andspeaking of audio, when you play the
audio of Joe, do you havethe questions or not? I have.
I've done the best that I can. I think they were better this time
than they were last time, soI think you should be able to hear
it. Okay, somebody on oneof the pods, Trags or Paul or
(37:22):
somebody that they had their feed wherethey had their phone down there and you
can actually hear the questions and whata difference it makes and you know,
just like everybody's saying, shout outto Joe. Yeah, I look back
on my twenty to thirty year oldself. It's a miracle. I'm not
in prison for stupidity. I mean, and anybody who doesn't feel the same
(37:45):
way is not telling the truth.I hate to say it, but you
just look back on growth and youknow, births and deaths and all the
things that just change your life andeverything, and you look back sometimes it's
like, really, I was that. I don't get it, but yeah,
you know it. But I wasreally happy to hear him say that
yesterday, and because you know, obviously it just shows you that he was
(38:10):
probably going against everything that the trainersaid last year about that calf at some
point in time. And I thinkmaybe Zach or somebody, you know,
maybe when he signed a big contractorlike, uh, you're kind of important
to a team, can you takea little easy going for yeah. Yeah.
And it reminds me too of whenJamar said he's too stubborn, like
(38:31):
I told him, don't come back. Like Jamar knows him better than anybody,
and I think maybe his words carrya little bit more weight now because
of how correct he was and andmaybe that even caused, you know,
more self reflection for Joe to belike, all right, listen not only
to your body, but to yourteammates and your friends and what they're telling
you. Yes, sir, andlast question for you. I know you're
(38:51):
going to be up at seven twentynine tomorrow morning because they set your boy
up with the morning afternoon, ThursdayFriday tea slots. Right, you know
what. I have not looked atthe tea times. But if that's when,
if that's when the big cat istee and off, I'll be there.
They're gonna try their hardest to makesure for him to miss. The
cut is minus three hundred, there'sjust no value in that that make the
(39:12):
cut over. It's plus two twentyto make the cut. So I might
I might flip the coin this time. I don't know. I've made it
all right. I have a greatWednesday, Austin. Welcome back, Jeff,
Thank you man, I appreciate it. Yeah. You know, I
keep hearing all these things Tony andI touched on this last week about how
you know Tiger Tiger talks about there'salways this thing about Tiger's locked in,
(39:37):
and Tiger's playing all these great practicerounds and then he runs out of gas
on Friday. It's like, shouldwe keep doing all these big practice rounds
and how dialed? And he looksor maybe you should just show up and
play and and uh, maybe it'llwork that way. I'm excited for the
US Open though. I love golfmajors, and we'll talk a little bit
about that more tomorrow is that firstround gets underway. In the meantime,
(39:58):
let's go to the land of TonyPike where DJ is standing by and reading
what's up? Tea, Hey,Austin, what's on your mind? Uh?
Just cans as much your grandma, man, thank you. Yesterday was
a year anniversary of my grandma passes, so I totally understand. Yeah,
(40:20):
man, I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, it's it's all right.
I just want to touch on theBengals for a minute. I think Joe's
gonna be all right. He he'sa tough guy, but he's ever since
his rookie season, he's grown alot. And so uh. Also,
(40:50):
I believe our office line has gottenbetter. Just I was an offensive line
man, so I've kind of Iknow my thing around that. So I
really liked our I really liked theman's I was picking men's. Yeah,
and the whole draft that I wasvery pleased with our draft. Yeah,
(41:15):
I'm right there with you and TJ. Thank you for the phone call and
my condolences to you as well.Yeah, I think Joe's gonna be fine.
Uh. He did throw a lotof very similar practice today to yesterday.
According to Charlie Goldsmith, a lotof shorter intermediate passes, completed a
lot of those throws. Again,we'll hear more coming up in just a
(41:36):
little bit from Joe Daniman, andalso tomorrow Zach Taylor will speak to us,
so we'll be able to carry thatto the best of our abilities with
Zach. So yeah, I thinkoverall this is a better football team right
now than it was a year ago. And offensive line, defense, secondary
quarterback is a question because Joe hasn'treally said how well he feels. He
(41:57):
didn't put a percentage on it.Again, we'll hear from I'm going to
move that back to the top ofthe next hour since we had so many
calls. But yeah, this isa better football team now than a year
ago. I expect the offensive lineto take a step forward really interested to
see how different the offense looks underDan Pitcher. We'll get into that a
little bit later on. If nottoday, tomorrow, for sure, we'll
take a break. We'll be backhere listening to Sincy three sixty brought to
(42:21):
you by Skyline Chili on ESPN fifteenthirty. So what's going on in the
nit now? Getting ESPN is fifteenthirty from iHeartRadio. Even when Tony's not
here, I've screwed up the clock. Touch and go to catch up and
get us to hour number two ontime. I'll tell you what keeps me
(42:43):
up at night. By the way, this is Sincy three to sixty.
I'm Austin Elmore in for TP todayor one half of what we normally are.
Whatever you want to say is thatthe Bengals and Reds have struggled mightily
against Cleveland. If you know me, you know I hate Cleveland with a
burning, undying passion. The Bengalshave been smoked by them as of late
(43:05):
last week's last year's final game ofthe year doesn't count to me. The
Reds have struggled in the Ohio Cup. That sort of stuff keeps me up
at night because to me, Cleveland'salways going to be the bigger rival than
anybody else. I wish the Bengalsand the Reds would turn things around against
our northern neighbors. Anyways, whenwe come back, you'll hear from a
(43:25):
Southeast Ohio native, Joe Burrow yesterdaywhen he met with the media, and
we'll react to his comments and thentalkbacks and so much more. You're listening
to the Home of the Bengals onESPN fifteen thirty Sincey Shirts since he three
sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsoredin part by Cinci Shirts Cincy Shirts all
(43:51):
since the All Day. This isESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Hi, Hello, welcome in ourtwo sincere ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports
Station, Austin Elmore. Riding solofor the next couple of weeks, t
Pike and his lovely wife Meredith havewelcomed their third child into the world.
(44:13):
Walker, where as I like tocall him, intentional Walker or maybe based
on balls, was born a coupleof days ago, and Tone will be
with his family for a few weeksuntil we come back. It's until he
comes back comes back. Wow.See, somebody's got a mispronounced things.
Since he's gonna be gone, maybeit's gonna be me uh until he comes
(44:35):
back. It'll just be me ridingsolo for a little while, and invites
you to be a part of theshow at five, one, three,
seven, four, nine, fifteenthirty tweeted at me as well at audio
more Au t y E l MO r E. We haven't really gotten
into the Reds yet. They lostlast night to the Cleveland Guardians and are
now thirty two and thirty five. The Reds still certainly right in the thick
(44:59):
of it when it comes to theplayoff race. Half a game out of
that last wildcard spot right now,as is Arizona, The Cubs, and
the Cardinals all half a game outof the final wildcard spot. San Francisco
and Pittsburgh tied for that final wildcardspot. So it is a very very
very tight race in the National League, something to keep an eye out on.
(45:19):
We'll get into the Reds a littlebit more later on Elie de la
Cruz Bobblehead Night tonight at GABP.And we also got to talk about this
fan that got tased last night, because I've gotten some responses. I was
posting about this on Twitter, I'vegotten some responses from people that have me
scratching my head. Also heard thisfrom our friends at Cincy Shirts. Go
(45:45):
to cincyshirts dot com. There arereports out there that the NWSL is considering
bringing a team to Cincinnati. TheNWLA NWSL, gosh, I've really lost
it after the first hour, isthe National Women's Soccer League. It's a
very popular league. A lot ofthe top American players play, and players
(46:06):
from around the world come to theUnited States to play American soccer or to
play soccer in the NWSL. Theyare considering Cincinnati as a city for an
expansion team. This is professional women'ssoccer, and that would obviously be huge
for the city of Cincinnati. Ifyou're listening and you've been around Louisville at
all, you know how that's beenfor Louisville and so many other different parts
(46:28):
and places around the country. Roselevel you would think would be a favorite
to come home if Cincinnati were toget an NWSL team. The good folks
at Sincy Shirts have a bring Women'sSoccer to Sincy t shirt now available since
that was announced earlier today, andI would imagine by the time things are
done on our show here today, they'll have something going on with that kid
(46:50):
doing a backflip and getting tasered becausethey're just really good at that sort of
stuff. Sincey shirts dot Com threeretail locations, go and check them out,
all right, before we get intothe Reds that's coming up a little
bit later on, including this datein Red's history, let's do let's do
this, Let's hear from Joe Burrowand we'll wrap up some Bengals conversation.
We'll push some of it towards tomorrow. We'll also talk to Joe Daniman,
(47:15):
who is at Bengals mandatory mini campright now. But we'll do we'll do
this, we'll do talkbacks and we'llget into some Reds baseball and other stuff
coming up in just a little bit. But in case you missed it yesterday,
here is the Bengals quarterback Joe Burrowwhen he met with the media.
It's a constant process. That's whatcoming back from injury is. He's gonna
(47:36):
be good days and bad days, and we're gonna take it day by day.
That's tough to say. I'll beready to go by the season.
What's that the most challenging part interms of is it soreness tightness? Like
can you office through on the newpad day where you said, you know
an episode of bad days, Likewhat does your bad day like? Who
(47:57):
are you dealing with? Yeah,so it's not always just when you're coming
back from injury. You know, you're learning how to maneuver your body in
new ways that you haven't done ina while. So there's gonna be things
that pop up, whether it's therisk or whether it's something else that you
(48:19):
know that you have to work through. And that's coming back from injury.
That happens every time. So that'sI've been through that. I I know
what that process is like, andso I can handle it better now what
you said, you know, therest a kind of make sure that they
kind of manage the world epoid anddrawn Stopple. Is that conversation like,
kind of how has that said forYeah, it's been it's been great,
(48:39):
you know. I that's something thatwe're being more proactive about this year that
you know, we don't have tobe ready to go in the middle of
June. We got to be readyto go early September through February. So
that's how we're attacking this offseason,in this rehab plan, in these practices
(48:59):
and training camp, we're attacking itlike I want to be out there playing
in February. Kind of scale backwhen you want to. Yeah, that's
it's always hard to change your mindsetwhen you've done it one way for so
long, and that's gotten to gottenyou to where I'm at now. And
(49:22):
I feel really good about the playerthat I am because of that work that
I put in. But now Ifeel like I'm transitioning more to listening to
my body and making sure that I'mfeeling one hundred percent so i can go
out and perform and I'm not makingthese big, big leaps year to year.
(49:44):
I'm feel really good about where I'mat as far as how I'm going
to play now, it's just aboutmaking sure my body is in the right
place to be able to do that. You mentioned that you know, you
got to make sure your risk, but then there's other other body parts because
it's telling deepol connected with lake ball, lake balla ball else sort of how
do you make I mean, Iguess, how do you uh, how
(50:06):
do you process the fact that notonly do you work on the risk,
but you're trying to make sure thatyou're not doing anything that perspect you know,
neatively other part of the bodies thatthat's a tough downs and there sometimes
yeah it is. But fortunately I'veI've been through this before, so you
know, I know exactly what it'sgonna take for me to feel tip top
(50:28):
shape come September. And you know, our training staff has been through it
before, coaching staff has been throughit with me before, so we know
we know how to handle it.Just like anything, the more reps that
you get with something, the betteryou're gonna be at handling it in the
future. And I feel like we'redoing that. I'm really happy with how
we've handled it so far and we'regonna continue to handle it this way going
(50:49):
forward. Well, get get thetiming with receivers. Nice to have Jamar
back. You know, these thesetimes during this time of year always about
team chemistry, building that trust throughoutthe team so you can go out and
perform on Sundays. And I feellike, you know, we've really we've
taken some we've had some fun teammeetings, we've we've done some fun things
(51:13):
as a team to try to buildthat and I think that's what this time
is about. This isn't about, you know, making sure that everything is
all the keys are crossed and allthe eyes are dotted. That's not what
this time is about. This timeis about being around, being around the
guys, getting on the field withthe guys, learning how to communicate out
(51:35):
there. So come training camp, everything fires a little faster from the end
of this week until training campers. That's something that can't put in. Yeah,
I have it all, have thatwhole, this whole next month laid
out of how I want to handleit, my rest days, the weeks
that I'm I'm going to grind. So we have that all laid out,
and I'm excited about it. Andobviously you want to be out there from
(51:59):
the ball, But do you almostfeel like throwing the balls apart from the
kind of get my draft, butto get better, I have to throw
the ball and throw a certain way, even if it's fifty percent seventy five
percent. Yeah, I would saythat that is definitely a part of it.
You want to get those biomechanics backin your muscle memory. But I
also feel really good about how I'mthrowing, and so now it's just about
(52:24):
making sure my body feels the waythat I need to come July twenty fourth,
on our first day of practice andthen through training camp into the first
game. This is about how youexpected to feel. Those at their side.
Yeah, this is you always forgethow hard it is coming back from
injury. That's every time it happens, I think the same thing, because
(52:45):
there's always peaks where you're like,I'm feeling great, and then a couple
months later you have a couple ofdays where it's like, man, I'm
not feeling that great. And inthe past I pushed through that and cause
problems for myself and this year I'mnot doing that. If you needed to
access your best throw your artists, growing the type, what do you feel
right now? You're sure you haveplaybooks to pitch? How much different is
(53:08):
it, uh, you know comparedto you know, situated into the leaf.
I mean, our our core offenseis our core offense. You know,
we're gonna do what we do everyyear. There's new wrinkles and new
plays that you add to the tothe fold that we think are gonna help
us. And then that's what thistime is for to you know, call
(53:31):
those plays in the huddle go andwalk through those plays and then come training
camp. You throw them out there, see what works, see what doesn't.
And that's what this all process isabout. It's about trial and failure,
trial and error, and that's kindof what I like about this period
is you're trying a lot of newthings. Not everything is gonna work,
(53:52):
and you're gonna throw some stuff outand you're gonna keep some stuff and you're
gonna be a high person until betweenminutes. I mean, guys, like
I said, every year, you'reyou're putting in You're putting in new stuff.
The coaches go through and do theself scout and watch other teams throughout
the league, see what can helpus, see what can't uh, And
that's the process every year. Whatdo you notice that practice? When Jam
(54:15):
Harvey's or Gus in president, youdefinitely feel his presence. It was nice
having him back out there. Youknow, he's a guy that always brings
energy, always is talking to guys, whether it's about executing the play that's
being run or whether it's just providingsome fun and some energy. You know,
(54:36):
he's a he's a happy, golucky kind of guy that you love
being around. So it's always goodto have him back in sat throughout the
next as planning to get any workin regard of us, we'll see,
you know, I feel good aboutwhere our chemistry is. I don't I
don't feel the need for that, but if it happens, it happens.
(54:59):
Left what Jamar's game can be isthere are there more levels for you guys
to open up with him and waysto use him that you even haven't yet.
I mean, when everything you've doneso far is at such a high
level. Yeah, there's there's alwaysroom to improve. You know, we've
every once in a while we'll texteach other throughout the offseason thinking, you
know, we're always thinking ball,so he'll he'll text me one of his
(55:20):
thoughts. I'll text him one ofmy thoughts. That's the chemistry that you
need to go out and perform theway that we have and that we're going
to continue reviews improvement. I mean, what what do you do to say
times pretty good year? Last yearyou're not very much? I mean,
what do you do to even getbetter at that scene? Everything? Yeah,
(55:44):
every year you've you've banked reps fromthe past, and so whenever a
new season happens, you've you'll seea defense come up against the play that
maybe you haven't in the past, and now you've banked that rep for the
future. So every year that you'reevery year that you play, you're improving
your mind, your football mind aboutthe concepts, what works against certain looks,
(56:07):
what doesn't work against certain looks,And that's a constant progression of your
mind. And that's what I thinkis, you know, I really enjoy
that. It's like a chess match. You're always banking those reps to call
on maybe a check in the future, and maybe it comes up, maybe
it doesn't, but when it does, it's always a really good feeling coming
(56:31):
in this Georgian last year, asyou kind of talk to about how the
whole process is, do you waitfor a year? No? I kind
of let you know. I thinkthe best way to handle that is to
let him handle business the way thathe sees fit and give your opinions on
his value. The front office whenthey ask it saying this morn NEAs,
(56:51):
it doesn't need to be stated.Everybody knows what we got in him.
Do you feel any pressure in termsof he talks about they need to make
your stop to September and if say, have you had to use different outlets
to help you, you know, mentally feel with maybe something I should feel
and being able who you get through. A tran can have an injury and
(57:12):
obviously you can't control it, butjust from a mental standpling set, that's
some I work through. It's definitelysomething I've thought about. Yeah, you
know, whenever the injuries start tostack up, it's your football mortality kind
of comes into the back of yourmind. So that's definitely something that I've
thought about and something that I've hadto fight through. That's that's every injury
(57:35):
that happens, you know, theythey stack and you know, you continue
to think about how you can getbetter from those and how you can come
back and improved player when maybe you'renot getting the reps that you had because
of your injuries. So it's alwaysa challenge. It always is, But
you know, I'm built for it, our team is built for it,
(57:55):
and the people that I have surroundedmyself with have been through it with me
as well. So I'm excited aboutthe season. I'm excited about what we're
going to do, and I'm excitedabout all the guys we have in the
locker room Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. There's a lot of good stuff in there,
man, And I think when youlook at it kind of more through
(58:16):
the lens of the way we werelooking at things in the first hour of
the show, to me, itjust it becomes more obvious that you know,
he's not one hundred percent healthy rightnow, and he's okay with that,
and he knows that he's not goingto be one hundred percent on June
the eleventh, or June the twelfth, or June the thirteenth. Charlie Goldsmith
(58:37):
asked him, if you needed tothrow your best pass right now, could
you do it? Joe said, yes, one hundred percent. That tells
me he knows he's fine, heknows he's a little bit sore. He
knows he's going to have to dealwith this over the next month. And
he said, we have the nextmonth planned out. I know what it's
(58:58):
going to look like. I know, and I've learned learn from my body
how I can get myself best setup for training camp. And we know
how the season can struggle to getoff the ground if Burrow is not ready
to go. And you know, between now in training camp, if he's
able to rest, if he's ableto come up with a plan, if
(59:19):
he's able to throw whatever it mightbe to get himself ready so that he
knows, you know, hey,I'm ready to go at the end of
training camp. I'll be ready togo in the end of September. And
maybe that's going to mean there's practiceswhere Joe Burrow at training camp is not
practicing, where Joe Burrow is notthrowing the ball. That might be life
(59:40):
with his wrist moving forward, wherethere are going to be days when you
know, it doesn't feel great today, but I'll be okay, And there
are going to be games like that, I'm sure where he doesn't feel great
or he doesn't have it all andhe's going to have to lean on other
parts of the game or other partsof the team or other parts of the
game plan. That stuff's going tohappen because we're talking about a human being
(01:00:04):
who suffers a serious injury, andthat's life in the NFL. And I
get the pressure of wanting to win. I want that too badly for this
team and for this city and forthis fan base, for us here at
work, and for so many otherpeople. I think everything you have seen
from Joe Burrow from November until nowis a really really good thing. I
(01:00:30):
think it's a really really positive thingfor him and for the organization to look
around and say, our guy hastaken a step forward here and we've surrounded
him with the right people to helphim take steps forward, and we are
going to be okay. We livein a society in which we want the
(01:00:50):
instant gratification. We want Joe tosay I'm one hundred percent, I feel
great. Everybody wants that, butthe fact of the matter is it's not
true, and I a piate thehonesty. Now, he didn't give us
a number when he was asked whathis percentage is, But that's okay.
He can say it without saying it. We can read between the lines.
(01:01:12):
He's not one hundred percent and he'staking it easy and he's building himself up,
and that's a good thing compared totrying to push through it and trying
to feel perfect right now and feelperfect and mandatory mini camp so that he'll
feel better about July and the endof July and training camp. Like you're
just at a point now where it'slike everything is going to be fine.
(01:01:32):
I feel fine, is basically whatJoe is saying. Not perfect, those
days will happen, and that's kindof the new normal as of now.
It's crazy how his career has workedout with the injuries and the pandemic and
the appendectomy and the calf and allthis weird stuff where just never seems to
go right at this time of theyear, after going through that so much,
(01:01:55):
you can adjust and you have allthis knowledge that you've fail doubt about
how to better approach your life asan NFL quarterback, how to better approach
your preparation for training camp, andin doing so, how to better approach
who you are as a professional quarterbackgetting into the regular season. And he
(01:02:15):
talked about it being able to playthrough February. That's the goal for everybody.
I wish we could look at itand say Joe is one hundred percent
and he's ready to go and thereare no issues whatsoever. But that's not
the case. He's not one hundredpercent. He's still working his way up,
and that makes everybody nervous because he'sbeen hurt in the past, and
(01:02:36):
he's making a lot of money andwe've been through crap in the past.
Mo talked about this yesterday. Whenyou've had a lot of bad things happen
to you, you start to thinkthe worst. I get that. I'm
trying to bring some logic to theconversation, as if to say, I
don't believe that those old Bengals existanymore. I don't believe that all that
crap happens. I'm kind of overthat part of my life. I get
(01:02:59):
where you are. If you dofeel that way and you kind of assume
the worst, that's not where I'mat. I think this organization's turned a
corner. I think the quarterback hasturned a corner. I think it's us.
It's time for us now to turna corner as well and say,
you know what, Let's treat thesepeople like human beings. Let's be logical
and understand and assess the situation honestlyhere and I think that's where a lot
(01:03:23):
of people are at. Talkbacks arecoming up next to Austin Elmore, one
half of since E three to sixty, Tony Pike back in a couple of
weeks. This is the home ofthe Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm
on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati SportsStation all right, bough, let me
hear you good loud oh wld ahtoo ah fe wow fuss to sup to
(01:03:52):
backs. We listen to the clouds. Good be a bud. It's a
crack Jones. We hope those othertwo divert come back over the rout fo
totally all ohing comes close to theshow. We got hag right, Hello
(01:04:21):
the stars over talk back show, rods well rads well. Let's hope that
the Reds win tonight on Ellie Day, La Cruz, Bobblehead Night, Welcome
back Sincy three to sixty ESPN fifteenthirty, Cincinnati's sports station. Time for
(01:04:41):
talkbacks. And let's excuse me,let's get it started. What's this crap?
I hear out of Joe Burrow aboutoh, my injuries are stacking up
and football mortality and I might eventuallylike drop out of the league. Not
what I want to hear from myleader. I want to hear a quarterback
(01:05:06):
say I'll rip off my left armto reach for a first down to win
the super Bowl. It's crap.He never said anything about dropping out of
the league. I think if youinterpreted what Joe Burrows said as is the
way that you just explained it.I think that says more about you than
(01:05:27):
anything else. Hey, Austin Godhere, Hey God, I do you
think breaking news is not breaking newsanymore? Some of these reporters are saying
it's breaking news five six hours afterthe story has been initially reported. Your
thoughts, your comments. God,good to hear from you. I think
(01:05:48):
that it's no longer breaking news afteran hour. Then it becomes just news.
Hey Austin Marcus from the grave. What up? I want to throw
two names at you for possible tradedeadline moves, and I want you to
take take an account age experience andwhat kind of players we would give up
(01:06:13):
for each. Would you rather Reskoget a Brent Rooker or a Tommy Fam.
I think I would rather have BrentRooker. I'm kind of cool on
the Tommy Fam thing. Tommy Fam, I think is a complete psychopath.
He would be entertaining, but he'sthirty six years old. He is hitting
the ball well, hitting for atwo to eighty average. Both of them
(01:06:36):
are right handed outfield bats. Ithink the thing with the Reds right now
is they need more pop in theirlineup for when things are when they go
cold. And I'm going to talkabout this in the final hour. But
the way they're built, they canbe really fun to watch. They can
scratch and claw together runs. Butwhen they're not playing well, they need
(01:06:57):
somebody that can hit the ball overthe fence, and they don't have that
right now, Like they don't haveconsistent power. I think Brent Rooker is
a much more consistent, powerful bat. He's got thirteen home runs already this
year. He's seven years younger,I think than Tommy fam Is. So
I would rather have a Brent Rooker. And I don't know exactly. That's
(01:07:20):
where I'm not really good at this. I'm not good at like knowing the
value of a player and what exactlya team would be looking for. But
I feel like there's probably some pitchersthat Oakland might be asking for that in
the red system they'd be willing tomove on from. That would be my
guess. We need to get anexpert on though. I'm just a guy.
Hello, this is former President RonaldReagan, and well we all know
(01:07:43):
that talkback. President Johnny from MountHealthy is a ball of energy. Yes,
but until last night, I hadno idea that he could do a
backflip. Oh no, gosh,it'd have been great if it was Johnny
from Mount Healthy Well. Tequila Tuesdayleads to him spending the night in a
kling Austin. Hank Hill here, and I tell you what. I just
(01:08:05):
wanted to send my condolences, andyou know, I'm sorry for you loss.
And I tell you, I betyour grandmother lived one heck of a
life. Boy, I tell youwhat, well, I'm glad you all
got to remember her yesterday as afamily, and glad you were able to
take the day off. But Itell you, I know we had our
(01:08:26):
differences in the past, but HankHill has your back. Well, Hank,
thank you very much. She didleave, she did live a heck
of a life and left quite alegacy. Srees ninety four unbelievable, Hank,
thank you for your comments. Bythe way, just heard from Cincy
Shirts now up Cincy shirts dot com. Speaking of backflips, they have the
legend backflip T shirt sincey shirts dotCom. It's unbelievable. Go check it
(01:08:53):
out. Hey, Audiekevin in orto Kentucky. Here, really sorry hear
about your grandmother passing away. Theseare the people with care, love about,
always tough, so prayers for youand your family. Sad to hear
about the logo there. Jerry Westhats in LA as well, so prayers
for his family. But congratulations toTona Mayor on their newest edition. To
their family and Aunie. I'm thinkingabout this person that ran on the field
(01:09:15):
last night at the ball game. You know what's going to be in your
mind thinking, you know what,I'm having a great time. You do
what were really taught? This off? Though I tripped a jail. I
want to know what happened to theguy's shoes because he wasn't wearing any shoes.
He was just in his socks. This kid, don't tell Tony this.
Okay, don't tell Tony this. But he's a sophomore at Ohio State.
He's a sane ex kid. Apparentlyhe's related to some person who is
(01:09:40):
a judge for a long time, and today they turned him from a felony
to a misdemeanor. Explain that Idon't know. I think people that run
on the feet on the field arestupid, and I think they should be
banned from every Major League ballpark. And I think that the taser should be
used more often on set people. It makes no sense to me, it's
(01:10:02):
no way is it worth it.I think yesterday is a microph cosm of
life between you, Austin and Tony. You know how joy and sadness can
be present at the same time.Yeah, on the same day. Heartfelt
condolences to you, Austin and yourdad, your whole family and the loss
(01:10:23):
of your grandmother. And also congratulationsenjoy to Tony and Meredith on the birth
of their new son. So justlots of feelings for both of you,
guys. Yes, have a greatday. Yees emotional couple days, Patty,
thank you for all your kind words, and yeah, it's you know,
that's life, man, it's it'sIt's been like a few days and
(01:10:45):
a week of like a lot ofperception for me, a lot of I'm
I'm kind of a deep thinker.I consider myself to be a deep thinker
to begin with. I really lookat things deeply, feel things deeply.
So yeah, it's been it's beena strange week. But I think that
those sorts of things can also bereally really good for you to just kind
of gain perspective and context and whateverit might be. And that goes for
(01:11:08):
Tony as well. Hey, Austin, you were you were saying and asking
for help on how you can furtheryour career and stuff. Well let's start
with you not being a saboteur.Hey Austin, First and foremost, my
(01:11:30):
condolences go to you and your familyfor the loss of your grandmother. I
just kind of tripped chuckle when yousaid Tony named his son Walker, because
my mind immediately thought, is hisother child going to be named Texas Ranger.
Yeah. I'm gonna be making alot of jokes because if I have
one toxic trait in my life,it's that I can never call people by
(01:11:53):
their actual name, Like I alwayscome up with some sort of nickname or
I shorten it in some way, shape or form. It's one of It's
probably one of the most annoying thingsthat I do. Uh So, Yeah,
that's I already came up with nicknamesfor Walker. I'll probably call Wilder
and Wesley Texas Ranger as well, just to if nothing else, entertain myself.
Hey Austin, great show today,Thank you, condolences to you and
(01:12:15):
your family. Sorry to hear aboutyour loss. Thank you. I am
with you, though I share aboutas much love for Cleveland as you do.
Yes, and I'm sick and tiredof it. Why are we letting
them own us? You know? Can we go out and just get a
damn win? Can we stop thistoday? Let's go Reds, Let's go.
(01:12:39):
I agree with you, And youknow, wouldn't it feel great to
split a two game set with theGuardians as good as they've been and with
one of those days being a bullpenday? I mean, when tonight you
feel fine splitting with a great teamin Cleveland? Yeah, Austin, sorry
for the lost year grandmother? Thankyou? Like that picture rocking the Sincy
(01:13:00):
three sixties show. Yes. Yeah. The other day I was gonna say,
shout out to Kentucky baseball, MasonHigh School baseball. I went to
Mason Kindergarten, first second grade.Shout out to Jerry West so great.
I remember seeing him in the gardens. Just unbelievable seeing him live. Yeah,
(01:13:21):
there you go, shout out, appreciate it. Loud talk back guy.
One more or quick thing. Ijust had to add. Excellent question
from Charlie Goldsmith to Joe Burrow.Yeah, man, that guy he just
gets it. He sure does,he really does. Just to clarify my
talk back from the other day.I did know that Moe was not on
(01:13:43):
the show. I said it becauseI know that he listened and I didn't
feel like holding the show. Okay. Also, you said that it was
dumb. What was dumb about it? What was dumb about it? The
fact that we know that I saidthat, we know why Caitlin's getting treated
like this, and it's not becauseshe's just another popular great and we all
rookies get treated like that. Thefact that she got left off the Olympic
(01:14:04):
team and the WNBA and women's nationalteam is stupid. Is that? Uh?
No? I think it was somethingelse that you said. I can't
remember the talkback, but way tonot dwell on it, and I don't
understand the need to always be we'redone, we're done, just move on.
I'm very sorry about your grandma.Oh man, I didn't know that
(01:14:26):
that was happening, but I'm gladthat she's in a better place now.
I'd love to come down and hangout with you at the park, but
I mean I went on Saturday.I don't think I really have any and
it means I means, oh Imight, but and Jim dude, please
knock it off. Man, it'sbeen like two years of this shick and
it's really getting old. It's reallynot funny. What are you talking about.
(01:14:50):
Jim thinks he's funny, and Ithink that it's funny that Jim thinks
he's funny, And maybe some ofyou think that's funny too, Drew and
Mason clearly does not. All right, that's gonna do it for talkbacks today.
When we come back. I haveto reach out the hand of Christian
Fellowship to Adam Pacman Jones. Iwas told a story by a relative yesterday
(01:15:13):
that has changed the way I viewone pac Man Jones ever so slightly.
It's not a complete needle mover, but I have been very critical of Adam
Pacman Jones for the last ten yearsnow, and I am going to give
Adam some credit. I'm going togive him some props for something that he
(01:15:35):
did recently that I just found outabout yesterday. So stay tuned for that
because I know that's exciting for somany people. This is sincey three point

Good stuff to get to. I'mgonna push it back till tomorrow. From
Mow and Paul when they were talkinga little bit about Burrow, talking a
(01:16:27):
little bit about the offense. Definitelyworth checking out if you haven't already.
Podcast PAGESPN fifteen thirty dot com searchMoe, Moe and Paul yesterday. Good
stuff about forty minutes there that youshould give a listen to. I want
to talk about this because I,you know, I have a long and
complicated relationship with Pacman Jones, andI've I've been very critical of him in
(01:16:51):
the past, and I wanted totake a moment to give him credit because
I was told a story yesterday bya family member who was up from Georgia,
and they said that they were downin Georgia recently and they were driving
along a road. I don't knowthe specifics of the road or exactly the
(01:17:14):
location, but in front of themwas a serious accident where a car I
think was turned over. It mayhave flipped or it was stuck, it
was badly tore up. It wasa really nasty wreck. And my cousin
pulls out or pulls over and runsto go help. And they're trying to
(01:17:35):
pull this person from this car, which I don't know if it was on
fire or what exactly was going on, but they're trying to get this person
out of the vehicle that had beenin the accident. And another person approaches
next to my cousin and begins tohelp get this person out. And so
(01:17:55):
they get them out and they removethem from the car, and they call
the p and the paramedics and folksare coming. And this man that had
helped my cousin, he pulls outa piece of paper and he writes down
his name and his phone number, and he hands it to my cousin.
He says, if they need awitness, call me, mister Jones.
(01:18:19):
Don't do police, And so cousintakes the papers his thanks and puts it
in his pocket. And it's helping, you know, everybody out in the
situation. The other guy leaves andcome to find out, you know,
that they get this guy or thisperson who had been in this accident.
They put him on a stretcher andthey're getting ready to put him into the
(01:18:43):
ambulance and he says to my cousin, was that pac Man Jones? And
my cousin is not admittedly not abig football fan, certainly not a Bengals
fan, and he goes, Idon't know, and pulls out the piece
of paper and on the paper waswritten Adam Jones with a five to one
to three area code or whatever itwas. And so he pulls his phone
(01:19:06):
out, he googles pac Man Jonesand sure enough, that was the guy
who helped pull this person injured personout of a vehicle after seeing a nasty
accident in Georgia. So, pacMan, I have been very critical of
you, but you were a goodsamaritan and you helped someone in their time
(01:19:29):
of need, and for that Igive you credit and you deserve a lot
of credit for that. And it'sso funny that our worlds continue and our
paths continue to cross, and thatyou helped the family member of mine complete
that task and you help someone intheir time of need. So pac Man
Jones, credit to you and shoutout to you for doing that, because
(01:19:51):
that really is cool. And maywe all learn a lesson from pac Man
when it comes to that, youknow, we all may we all learn
a a lesson from my cousin andall who help in times of need.

The Losville Bats playing a getaway gametoday against the Minneapolis Saint Paul Saints,
and noelbe Marte won for three todaywith a hit, a run scored
in a strikeout. Last night,Marte was two for five with a double
(01:21:06):
in his first appearance of the yearat Triple A. Louisville. David Bell
did say there are no restrictions onNoelvie Marte whatsoever. He is gonna play
as much as he can, andhe was not eligible to return until June
twenty seventh. If I'm not mistaken, and he's been I know he was
(01:21:29):
down to the Dominican for a littlewhile. It was in Arizona for a
little bit. Now he's ready togo in Triple A Louisville as a part
of a rehab assignment. Pat Kellycan play him as much as he wants
to. There are no there's noramping up going on for Marte whatsoever.
He will be good to go inTriple A Louisville, and so back to
back games with hits for Noelvie Martein Louisville. You might be wondering about
(01:21:51):
Casey Legamina mentioned him earlier. Iwas referring to Lance McAllister, who is
expecting the Reds to make a moveto bring up an arm today. Casey
Lagomuna pitched two scoreless innings for theBats today, so it's not going to
be him. Not sure if they'regonna end up making a move or not,
but certainly something to keep an eyeout on between now and the start
(01:22:12):
of the game tonight at Great AmericanBallpark. Speaking of last night, if
you stuck around for the end ofthe game, you saw Blake Dunn get
hit in the head with a onehundred mile per hour fastball from Emmanuel class
A, the Guardian's closer. Herewas David Bell after the game talking about
(01:22:34):
that. Yeah, yeah, ofcourse it's scary, you know, and
he's fine, so that that's themain thing and that's all that matters.
But yeah, I mean, butyeah, I can. It can be
dangerous up there. You know, that's part of the game. But I
mean, you hate hate to seethat happen to anybody, and definitely our
(01:22:57):
own, our own guy anyone. But he's fine. You know, he's
tough. But I don't care howtough you are. I mean, I
think more than he got lucky rightthere. And he's going to go in
the training room before he leaves. But he seems to be doing well.
Seems to be doing well. Blakedone. That is David Bell on the
Reds outfielder after he took a onehundred hour fastball to the dome piece.
(01:23:21):
And if there's any indication on howthose helmets hold up against fastballs, that
was a pretty good indication last nightglad to hear that Blake done is okay.
We may not still be on theair by the time a red lineup
comes out, but if we are, we will keep you posted on that.
We'll get into some reds in justa little bit, But first we're
(01:23:42):
going to talk to Joe Daniman Foxnineteen, Bengals flagship television station, is
going to come over to the Bengalsflagship radio station and talk about what he
saw today in day two of Bengalsmandatory mini camp, and we'll probably throw
a couple of other questions his wayas well. This is sin On,
the Home of the Bengals. ESPNfifteen thirty is getting gas at at sponsored

welcoming a new addition to the familywith him and Meredith and excited for them.
But the wheels keep churning here, and the wheels kept churning at the
practice facility next to pay Corpse Stadiumearlier today as the Bengals had mandatory mini
(01:24:48):
camp day two, and here toreport on that and give us an indication
of what he saw today. Asour good friend Joe Daniman from Fox nineteen
and Joe, let's get to theJordan stuff first before we get to the
Bengals. Your reaction to Joey Chestnut'sband from the hot dog eating context.
I hate the hot dog eating Ohcome so gross to watch. It's awful
(01:25:12):
to watch. I don't watch it. I do know he's the Michael Jordan
of eating. Yes, but whatwasn't Kobeyashi that at one point? So
I wonder is this like a LebronJordan thing now with like Kobyashi and Joey
Chestnut. But yeah, man,I'm okay with passing on watching Joey Chestnuts
stuff about three hundred hot dogs inhis face. Well, you're your major
(01:25:34):
league eating ignorance is showing because Kobyashiis retired and Jeff Esper is now the
number one in the world and gonnabe the favorite twin hot dog eating contest.
I lost a lot of respect foryou today, I really did.
I thought that all over that eachof us has their own immature vice.
Mine is watching pro wrestling, yoursapparently is watching competitive eatings. Yes,
(01:26:00):
that's a good way to look atthings, all right? Where do you
want to start with the Bengals?Because there's a lot going on. We've
heard good things about Dax Zill JoeBurrow spoke yesterday. Nobody's heard from Jamar
Chase, even though he's been kindof around. Where do you want to
start? Pick your adventure here?Joe? I like this, So let's
start with Jamar because we figure Jamarwould be the story today, with Joe
(01:26:21):
basically emptying his own internal notebook yesterdayand telling us all about football mortality and
the growth he's made in the offseason, which I think is fascinating,
interesting, and a good sign forthe Bengals that Joe has kind of finally
come to the point where he fullyunderstands his value and work to the organization.
(01:26:42):
But let's talk about Jamar because Jamarhas now been here for two days
and look Jamar has has nothing toprove in Mini camp. He just needs
to be here to check the box, to be here for mandatory and look.
Meetings are a big part of whathappens at Mini camp. It's not
just some work inside the bubble here. They're going to a lot the meetings.
There's having his presence around the youngreceivers and the young offense. That's
(01:27:04):
important. But he has yet todo anything in practice. And I don't
think that's a problem. He shouldn'ttake a single snap in Mini camp practice.
But we're all waiting to hear fromhim, correct because of the domino
that fell with Justin Jefferson, We'reall so curious to hear what he has
to say, not only about that, but a myriad of topics, including
(01:27:27):
the guy who's been his wingman forthe last four years, and that's Pe
Higgins, And what are his thoughtson p Higgins. So we were at
Jamar's locker yesterday hoping he would talk. He said politely and playfully that he
wasn't talking yesterday. So we allwaited at his locker again today and this
kind of felt like, and Idon't know if you watched Game of Thrones,
Austin. It's almost like we're thewatchers of the Wall here and our
(01:27:51):
watch today has ended without Jamar Chasetalking. So locker room was open for
forty five minutes, we waited forthirty minutes, and you can make fun
of us all you want, butif any of us misses the Jamar Chase
story, we're not going to bein a good place. So you have
to kind of just huddle by hislocker and wait. He knew we were
there, he made us wait, and then he finally showed up and again,
(01:28:15):
like yesterday, said he wasn't goingto talk today, and tomorrow,
of course is the last day ofmini camp before they break before trading camp,
and he said, I'm not gonnasay I'm gonna talk tomorrow. I'm
not gonna say I'm not gonna talktomorrow. So our watch will continue again
tomorrow, waiting to hear for JamarChase and his thoughts on just so many
(01:28:35):
pressing issues with the Bengals number onewide receiver. Why do you think he
doesn't want to talk? I don'tknow. I don't think he really wants
to talk about a lot of thethings that he's gonna be asked about it's
gonna be a lot of contract stuff, and that came up last year,
but it came up in kind ofan organic way near the end of the
(01:28:55):
year, and it wasn't a pressingissue. It wasn't anything. That window
wasn't open yet, so it wastalked more in hypotheticals. It was talked
more in generalities. Now that thiswindow is open and he can start negotiating
this and the domino has falled andthis is a real thing now, I
think he doesn't want to really speakon it just yet, and I think
(01:29:16):
he's trying to buy himself time untiltraining camp and he can't avoid it forever.
He's gonna have to do something then. But I think he's trying to
trying to bridge this to training campto give himself some more time here before
he really speaks on it. Understandingwhat you and I both do for a
living, do you think it's atall possible that it really doesn't benefit Jamar
(01:29:39):
Chase to talk Hmm, yeah, probably. I mean, I I think
you make a good point here,Austin. I think you can see it
from both sides, right because youcan go out there and you can you
can explain your side of things. You can explain, you know, why
you should be paid, this whyyou should be but it doesn't do any
(01:30:00):
good to put that out in public, to your point. And also at
the same time, he's already madehis statement on that he was waiting for
Justin Jefferson to sign his deal. And the question is, though, and
I'm curious, and this is somethingprobably to your point again that doesn't necessarily
need to be public. Is ishe looking for Justin Jefferson's deal to be
(01:30:23):
the ceiling and he comes in justunder that, or is he expecting to
go higher than Justin Jefferson? Doeshe want to play another year to push
his value even higher and see wherethe market goes after that. So I
think there's a lot of things thatwe're all curious of, and to your
point, I think a lot ofthat probably doesn't necessarily do him any good
(01:30:43):
to put out in public. Butit's just kind of what we do right
right in this game, in themedia game and the athlete game and the
negotiation game. Things are said, things are done, and it's just kind
of part of what we do andthe kind of the way it works.
So yeah, to your point,it probably doesn't do him any good publicly,
(01:31:05):
but it's just kind of how thegame works and how it's done.
So I do expect him to speakon it. I just don't know if
it'll be tomorrow. Yeah, absolutely, that makes a lot of sense.
Talking with Joe Daneman Fox nineteen atBengals Mandatory Mini Camp earlier today, before
we get into Joe Burrow, let'stalk about what we saw at practice today,
including from Joe Burrow, and whatstood out from day two of Mandatory
(01:31:28):
Mini Camp to you. So threethings stood out today, and I'll start
with Dax Hill because the Dax Hillmoved to me was a very interesting one,
and they moved him from safety tocorner, and just necessarily how much
he wanted to do that, becauseit felt like to me from the conversations
I've had with Dax going back tolast year and even early on this year
(01:31:50):
in the offseason, it felt liketo me he wanted to be a safety.
The Bengals moved in the corner andhe has been their starting corner.
Now we're talking about Mini camp, right, We're talking about formations and guys
lining up in mini camp, buthe's been the number one guy opposite of
Cam Taylor Britt at the start ofevery drill, the start of every seven
(01:32:13):
on seven, every team activity. Now they split snaps DJ Turner and Dax
Hill, so it's not like hehas it to his own, but he
has shown so far an ability tomake plays, and obviously he has turned
heads if the Bengals are gonna goahead and put him at that spot this
early, So that's been interesting. It's also been interesting to see how many
snaps a Marius Mims is getting withthe ones, and Trent Brown wasn't here
(01:32:39):
for a lot of the offseason forhis own personal reasons. Right now it
kind of seems like they're almost splitting, even maybe a sixty forty sixty five
thirty five split in favor of aMarius Mims. Right now you're at Minichamp
again, Trent Brown's a veteran kindof like Jamar Chase, probably doesn't need
a lot of work during a timelike this, so maybe that's it get
(01:33:00):
a Marius as many snaps as hecan. But right now that is noticeable
is how many snaps and Marius Mimsis getting with the first group. And
then a third point would be obviouslyyou have to talk about Joe Burrow.
And what Joe Burrow did today,it kind of mirrored what we saw yesterday.
He did all the warm up tosses, he did all the individual work.
He isn't ripping the ball deep.He threw a lot of short intermediate
(01:33:21):
passes during seven on sevens was histypical self, got the ball where it
needed to go to the open receiverunderneath. And then I'll give you one
more bonus, one oh one morebonus. Mike Kasiki lining up outside a
lot a lot, so I expecteda lot of Mike Kasiki in the slot.
We're seeing several snaps of Mike Kasikiout wide here during Bengals mini camp,
(01:33:46):
which I think is very interesting tosee the Bengals new weapon deployed in
that way. So those are thefourth things that stood out to me today.
Dax Amrius, Joe Burrow doing whathe did yesterday, and then also
Mike is getting some run on theoutside with his new Bengals teammates. As
somebody who made the bold prediction afew weeks back that Amarusmims would be the
(01:34:09):
opening day right tackle, I enjoythat information that you just gave me.
I do think the Kasiki thing isinteresting, and I kind of want to
steer the conversation towards the offense toan extent, because I don't know how
different, size, speed wise,Mike, Gasiki and T Higgins really are.
And I'm curious how different the offensewill look with all the different guys
(01:34:30):
that you can put in the slot. T Higgins isn't one of them,
So what you do with the guyson the outside I find really fascinating.
What have you kind of taken away? And I know Joe loosely speaked on
this yesterday, spoke on this yesterdayas well about how different the offense looks
under Dan Pitcher. Slowly but surely, I think there's been a little bit
more crumbs as to kind of theidentity and Zach Taylor obviously taking a little
(01:34:51):
bit of a step back. Whathave you noticed about the formation of the
offense from what you have been ableto see? And I think it's interesting
to your point about T. Higginsand Mike is SICKI first there, Austin,
the question is when T is back, what will this look like?
Right? Well, where will Mikeis Sicky then be deployed? And that
that's what it's really going to getinteresting when you have your full compliment of
(01:35:15):
wide receivers and where these guys allline up at this point. And to
your point about Zach Taylor taking thestep back, it's continued here at Mini
Camp where like he's almost off toby himself now and you have Dan Pitcher
running everything. You almost have JoeBurrow at times running the show himself too.
The other point I wanted to maketoo about what we saw today,
Chase Brown was not participating today. He was out there, had a jersey
(01:35:41):
on at a hat on, didnot have a helmet on, and was
not participating. That's something I wantedto check in with Chase on but we
were how should I say, hi, a different Chase. We were on
Chase Watch, so we couldn't goto Chase Brown. It didn't look anything
serious. He looked fine, buthe was not participating in drills in team
activities. So that's one thing tokeep an eye out for here as we
(01:36:05):
go to the final day of MiniCamp. But when you look at this
offense and you see what Joe Burrow'sdone so far as far as what he's
been able to do in practice,I thought it was very interesting today Austin
that I thought the seven on seventhe defense was the clear winner. You
know, you asked about Dan Pitcherand the offense, and when you go
seven on seven and look, Iknow Jamar Chase isn't out there, and
(01:36:28):
I know t Higgins isn't out there, and those guys are the best separators
they have, But it felt likethe defense of back seven was making a
lot of plays today against Joe Burrowand against Jake Browning. So if there's
one thing I've taken so far fromwhat I saw today, can only really
speak on what I saw today wasthat I was very impressed by what the
(01:36:48):
defense did, again against an offensewithout the two top weapons. I know
it makes a big difference, butI thought the defense against Dan Pitcher's offense
today stood out to me. Theplays that not only Dax Hill made,
but Cam Taylor brittmade, Jermaine Prattmade. I thought the defense was really
aggressive, got their hands on alot of passes today. I thought that
(01:37:09):
was a good sign. What exactlyabout Dax Hill stood out? Was it
the speed? Was it the athleticism? You know, I mean, I
understand this is helmets and shorts, but what exactly about him stood out to
you the most. It's the footin the ground, change direction and closing
speed to me that really stands out. So you think about a corner in
(01:37:30):
his back pedal, when a widereceiver stops his route, changes his route,
makes the move. That ability toplant that foot, change direction,
and then hip top speed, thatto me has been very, very impressive
from Dax Hill, not just inseven on seven, but when they do
individual work you can see that looksdifferent than the other guys on the team.
(01:37:51):
So that ability, the speed, the athleticism is there. The question
is is the IQ right playing thatposition that you know he wasn't drafted to
play, that he has played before. Will that come back? Will that
be game ready when it's time tostrap it up and play football in September.
So certainly here at mini camp yousee the instincts to see the raw
(01:38:15):
ability of Dax Hill. The questionis can't he play the position from a
mental standpoint at the level they needhim to play if he's going to be
the starter opposite of Cam Taylor Britttalking to Joe Daneman Fox nineteen been at
Bengals mandatory Mini camp this week.I talked a lot about Joe Burrow earlier
today in the show and kind ofthe reaction to him over the course of
(01:38:38):
the last couple of weeks, andwhether he throws or doesn't throw, and
just the reaction to him in generalthat everything he does is news. But
I felt like yesterday we saw aguy that's kind of taking a step forward,
that's turning a corner, that's growingup as a young man and learning
about himself. And you kind ofsaid it earlier that he kind of showed
you guys the internal notebook of what'sgoing on inside his head. And I
(01:39:01):
really enjoyed the conversation. I thoughtit was a lot of good stuff,
not only for the Bengals, butfor Joe Burrow and for the fans to
kind of understand a little bit moreabout him. What was your big takeaway
from when Joe spoke yesterday. Yeah, the two words that everybody will talk
about in the headline will be thephrasing of football mortality. And you know,
(01:39:21):
you look at the whole of thisoffseason and there was an understanding,
right and I'll put it like this, because we knew Joe Burrow had spoken
a month ago and Austin he saidthen that he was going to take days
off, he's going to rest, and then last week happens and everybody freaks
out, right, I mean, like Joe told us he was going to
(01:39:43):
do this, but that goes tothe point of his importance, not only
to the organization but just to thecity in general. And it's almost like,
you know, you can tell someoneand prepare someone for something, Like
I'll use this as an example. Before I got married, people were like,
you know, when you're your wifeis walking up the aisle, it's
gonna hit you. And like,Okay, yeah, you know, I've
been dating this woman for four orfive years. You know, I know
(01:40:05):
what she looks like. But thenwhen she's walking up the aisle, it
just hits you like a ton ofbricks. And so you know it's coming,
but you can't prepare, you compareyourself until it happens. And we
were prepared for Joe not to throw, and then he doesn't throw last week,
and the whole city loses its mindwhat's going on with Joe? And
it's just like we knew this wascoming, so just prepare for it.
(01:40:26):
But I think what you're seeing isis almost like a growth arc right of
the main character here in Cincinnati, and the important part of this off season
obviously is Joe's physical well being. It is risk okay, and everything appears
to be fine and on track forwhere they want that to be. But
the big win for the Cincinnati Bengalisorganization was Joe Burrow finally fully understanding his
(01:40:53):
value to the organization and his valueto the organization of being ready to play
on Sundays and what he does atmini camp and even what he does at
training camp, all of that stuff. Yes, it does matter to him
playing at his absolute best, butJoe Burrow being available is the most important
thing to this organization period. Ithought it was really really interesting what Joe
(01:41:17):
said about how almost having to changehis football identity. I mean, you
think about this guy Austin for tenyears, overlooked in high school, overlooked
at Ohio State, first year atLSU was just okay. This guy had
to grind and had to work andhad to prove people wrong. And now
he's established himself as one of thetop players in the entire world and now
(01:41:40):
he has to shut that off. That's a hard thing for a guy to
do when he's only done it oneway for so long, I grind,
I work, and now he hasto shut it off. I've made it,
I'm established, I've arrived. Nowit's important for me to shut off
everything I was to get to whereI am and saw that play out and
a person say that and verbalize ityesterday with fascinating for all of that change
(01:42:08):
inside of Joe to come out andfor him to say it publicly, It's
fascinating to me. It's almost likewatching Luke Skywalker become fully enveloped in the
Force, like that was the lastthing for him, right. Yeah,
It's like to have developed the Jedimind trick, and it's like Joe has
to Jedi mind trick himself into thatfinal piece of becoming Luke Skywalker in the
(01:42:30):
full force of the Force is nowwithin Joe Burrow. Yeah, and you
know understandable reluctancy to do something likethat after it has brought you so much.
And I think there's also this thingin sports, this grind type of
culture, this like mamba mentality typeof thing that you know is very much
(01:42:54):
I don't know the word I'm lookingfor, but people worship that mentality and
really try to make the most ofthat and try to be that, and
sometimes you have to understand that thatisn't for everybody, and in some particular
situations, it's not the right wayto approach life as an NFL quarterback.
But yeah, I've told everybody.I've been trying to explain because I think
(01:43:17):
Cincinnati fans are conditioned for the worst, and understandably so. But also I
think the organization has turned a corner. I think the quarterback has now turned
a corner. And I don't knowif it's us or if the fan base
or whatever to turn a corner andsay, Okay, things are different now.
We don't have to expect the worstall the time, and that may
never change until a championship is here. But I think that this whole Bengals
(01:43:44):
realm is so different than it wasfive or ten years ago that you can't
approach everything the same way and youcan't react to everything the same way that
you used to because it's entirely different, basically top to bottom. And I
think to your point, the factthat he's a quarterback, I feel like
Joe understands fully the responsibility of theposition and what it means to the organization,
(01:44:10):
and for so long to him thatwas setting a standard, setting a
standard of work, of grind,of the Mamba mentality of everybody looking at
me and seeing me and feeding offof what I do. That doesn't have
to be the case anymore. JamarChase not practicing or not participating in mini
camp is not him being a diva. Jamar Chase having nothing to prove.
(01:44:31):
And that's the graduation that I thinkeverybody, especially in this day and age,
the way the NFL and what theyexpect from these guys and who knows,
maybe even more games coming in thefuture of an extended regular season,
that guys like Joe Burrow and JamarChase taking time off is a good thing,
is a great thing for the organization. It's not them not wanting to
(01:44:56):
grind. It's not them not wantingto work. It's them understanding they have
nothing to prove. What what wouldJamar Chase doing at mini camp running a
handful of routes? What would that? What would that change? I mean,
Joe talked about it yesterday. Hesaid, my chemistry with Jamar goes
back to college. He's like, our chemistry and timing is just fine.
They're gonna need to do that stuffin training camp. They'll do that stuff
(01:45:19):
in training camp. So I toyour point the idea that you got to
change your mindset a little bit too. I think for the fan base and
for people who consume football, gotto change their mindset a little bit as
well. And understand that Jamar notdoing anything here today is a good thing,
right that you know that he's here, he's here for the meetings,
(01:45:39):
he's around the team, his presencematters. But Jamar doesn't have to do
a thing at mini camp. Hehas nothing to prove, he has nothing
to gain from this. Let theguy just be here and the same thing
with Joe and and inevitably he wouldtake days off at training camp. I
think it would be I think attraining camp too, like in the season,
(01:46:00):
where he's going to not practice andthat's just going to be part of
life. And here's my question toyou and I you know, and I
think this is just a conversation piece. Would it be smart for the Bengals
to announce that just just so peopledon't freak out and they don't think there's
a setback with the risk that Okay, Joe's gonna take this day off and
they just announced it on their socialsor to the media to share. So
(01:46:24):
just people just understand that day isa day off day. They don't owe
it to us to do that, but I think it would just I think
it would calm the fan base toan extent on the days that Joe just
doesn't go out there. In practice. Yeah, I think that's something they
would have to consider, just basedon the reaction to every little thing that
he does. It probably wears onhim to be micro under the microscope all
(01:46:47):
the time. It probably wears onthem. It probably wears on Zach.
And you know, Joe said hehas the whole next month planned out of
what exactly he's going to do,and maybe you don't give give us all
of that, but just to say, hey, you know those days are
going to happen. And Zach basicallysaid that last week. Joe basically said
that a month ago. People stilldon't seem to beginning that. So I
don't know, maybe they do needto do that and just kind of be
(01:47:09):
a little more firm with it.I don't know, but it's a good
question, and I think that's partof the reason Joe was so revealing yesterday.
Again, it was if you thinkback to the subject matter. His
first press conference of the off seasonwas the same subject matter as this,
but now that we've seen it inplay and in place, and for Joe
(01:47:30):
then to dive deeper into what he'sactually thinking and fully understanding and fully saying
publicly his value of the organization.I thought that's why his press conference yesterday
was more revealing than the first one, when he really kind of took us
inside of what he's thinking and whythis is important to him for him to
(01:47:51):
share as he just drives by meright now. Oh, Joey have fifteen
thirty, can say hi to JoeBurrow. You know, it's so funny
in his very nice car. Hada conversation last week kind of making fun
of this whole thing of like, does anybody ever see Joe getting groceries?
Does anybody ever see him in traffic? Like you know, I saw Andy
Dolton all the time. Now,okay, all right, Well, good
(01:48:13):
to know he did a red lightright now with like six cars behind him,
And I'm guessing no one has aclue that the most important man in
Cincinnati is now driving away in avery nice car. Oh that's funny,
all right, Joe, You've beenvery, very very gracious with your time,
almost twenty four minutes here. ButI do have one final question for
you. Are you in favor ofmore people getting tased when they run on
(01:48:33):
the field if we get the picturesin the video that we got from last
night? And absolutely, I'll saythis. So I was inside the locker
room with Paul Dayner Junior, andPaul Dayner has a friend who works for
Bally Sports Ohio. Huh, Andthey can't share this publicly because obviously you
can't put this on television. Buthe has this his friend who works in
(01:48:57):
the video room for Bally Sports Ohio, put together a highlight reel, a
montage of every angle they have ofthis guy getting slow boats and it's absolutely
ridiculous. Like he had Orlando Brownin stitches talking about it and showing him
this video because Orlando was there lastnight, and Orlando thought the guy tripped
(01:49:18):
originally until he kind of put twoand two together. But watching Orlando look
at Paul's phone with these highlights wasprobably the best part of my The photos
are so great. I really wouldlike him printed off. I'd like them
signed by the police officer, framed, you know, kind of the whole
nine yards. Just a beautiful imageof life and sports in Cincinnati, as
(01:49:40):
are you. Joe Daniman, thankyou so much for your time. Man,
really appreciate it. Auten anytime.Next time we talk, remind me
I have a funny story about TonyPike and not answering his phone just days
before his wife was ready to getfirst. I'll save that for next time.
I can't wait. Joe, thankyou so much. He often see
(01:50:02):
it. Joe, Oh my gosh, we almost went half an hour.
Could talk to that guy about anythingfrom hot dog eating contest to quarterbacks and
traffic lights to tasers and so muchmore. Late for a break if you
hadn't guessed. Since he three tosixty brought to you by Penn Station,
ESPN fifteen thirty. Kirsty is backon ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
(01:50:35):
Welcome back since he three to sixtyESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Austin
omore with you today on the Redsin just a moment. Quick update on
the latest from this this He's nota streaker, people keep you a streaker.
(01:51:00):
He wasn't streaking. He was runningacross the field. I don't know
what you would call him a trespassermaybe, but looking at the report here
from Channel five basically outlines the eventand some of the stuff that happened today
in the courtroom. The suspect isnineteen year old William Hendon, who is
(01:51:26):
a sophomore at Ohio State University. The Ohio State University. He's on the
dean's list there apparently, and isa member of the twenty twenty three class
at Saint Xavier, so apparently goesinto the courtroom today in front of Judge
William Mallory, and Judge Mallory says, hi, mister Hendon, how are
(01:51:46):
you Have you seen any of thatvideo that people captured? I have not,
No, Hendon responded, there arequite a few. Mallory said,
yeah, that's what I've heard.Hendon rept lied. The judge then said,
everybody thinks you landed that backflip?Pretty sure I did, Hendon said,
(01:52:06):
as laughter followed in the courtroom. He has been charged now with two
misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and obstructingofficial business. He pled not guilty.
I'm gonna say that again. Hepled not guilty of those two things.
(01:52:31):
What are we doing? Judge Malloryreleased him from custy pinning his next courtervariance
on July third. He also orderedHindon's stay away from Great American Ballpark.
That's unbelievable, you know. Shoutout to him for at least saying not
guilty, even though there are hundredsof videos and as we just heard from
(01:52:54):
Joe Danam in a highlight tape featuringhis time spent on the field. More
on the Red in just a moment. This is Sincy three sixty on ESPN
fifteen thirty, ESPN fifteen thirty andiHeartRadio Station, the exclusive audio home of
NBC's coverage of the twenty Welcome BackSincy three to sixty, ESPN fifteen thirty.
(01:53:26):
Austin Elmore in the chair today.I'll be riding solo for a little
while. Congrats again to T Pikegot their third baby Walker aka intentional walker
or base on balls Pike is whatI'll be calling him anyways. Reds tonight
game two of the two game setOhio Cup against the Cleveland Guardians. Listen,
(01:53:51):
everybody's going to be happy if theReds split this series with the Guardians
at least I'll be happy if thered split this series with the Guardians.
The Guardians are really good. They'rereally good, and tonight Nicolodolo gets the
mound for Cincinnati. We'll get moreinto the Reds tomorrow. And I wrote
something on Sports Illustrated about kind ofhow this month shapes up, and Antoni
(01:54:15):
and I have talked about it alittle bit. There was one domino to
fall earlier today, Cavin Bigio wasacquired by the La Dodgers from the Toronto
Blue Jays. Now, Visio isnot having a good year by any means,
but the Blue Jays are one ofthose teams to keep an eye out
on as potential sellers and guys thathave pop. And I do especially want
to talk about when we get intothe Reds more tomorrow and see how tonight's
(01:54:39):
game goes about the idea of themgoing after a slugger, the idea of
them being able to get somebody thatcan hit home runs at a higher rate,
and what that could potentially unlock forthe offense. Christian and Caronassio.
On Strand appears to have ligament damagein his wrist, which means he could
be out even longer. May haveto have surgery. He's talking with a
(01:55:01):
specialist. So the guy that youthought was going to provide more of the
power and most of the power probablynot going to come back. Noelvi Marte
certainly beefed up in air quotes thisoffseason and added some strength, you know
what I mean, and maybe hecould provide a little bit more power.
This team needs somebody with more popin their bat. How they are constructed
(01:55:26):
and who they are as a wholecan be really good and really effective and
really fun to watch. But whenthose bats go cold, they need somebody
that can hit the ball over thefence. And that's a big deal for
this team right now. They're goingup against a right hander tonight by the
name of Tanner BB. Tanner BBthis year has a three point seventy three
ERA and thirteen starts. He's pitchedseventy innings and has seventy six strikeouts.
(01:55:51):
He has a three to nine tosix ERA over his last seven starts.
Only one other Red has faced himbefore that is Antiago Espinal. He is
a zero for two with a walkagainst him. In his career. Nicolodolo
has only faced three Guardians, thatis Jose Ramirez, who does have a
home run off of him with threeRBI in two AD bats. He's two
(01:56:15):
for two total. Stephen Kwan ishitless in three in two at bats against
him, but does have an RBI, and Austin Hedges is also hitless against
him in three at bats, soshould be an interesting matchup. I would
imagine take the under and it isElie de la Cruz bobblehead Doll Night.
They're not bobblehead dolls, are they. They're just bobbleheads Tonight at Great American
(01:56:36):
Ballpark. I'll be there. MaybeI'll run into you. We'll be back
with Moe Egger for quick hits andlocks of the Night on the Home of
the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty. From the bron heating temp stuff. He
continues on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati'ssports station. It's time for Sincy three
sixty quick Hits on ESPN fifteen thirty. Yes, indeed, it is welcome
(01:56:59):
back since three sixty ESPN fifteen thirtyQuick kits, Locks of the Night.
Pleasure to be joined now by theman who's in the big chair for the
next three hours. Good chair,mo Egar, good chair, Hi mo
Austin. Nice to have you back. What's up? Not a whole lot?
How are you today? Man?I am. I am doing great.
I'm excited. We have a lot, a lot to talk about.
(01:57:19):
There's a lot going on there actuallyis. What's gonna be on your show
today? Well, uh, I'mgoing to be that guy when it comes
to our friend Will Hendon, I'mgoing to be that guy. I'm going
to be the guy that nobody wantsto hear from. Ok. I'll explain
coming up at the top of theshow. I also have Look, there's
(01:57:43):
lots of different ins and outs tothis red season. Got some really bad
injury news yesterday. We're gonna chatwith one of the experts from Ortho Cincy
about Christian and Carnassi on Strand andBrandon Williamson and Emilio Pagan. But above
and beyond that, there's one centraltheme to the next four weeks, the
next five weeks. I guess wewill tap into that a little bit more.
I know you've talked about this today, Joe Burrow and football immortality.
(01:58:06):
Come on now, and why doesn'tsomething like what happened in Saint Louis happen
in Cincinnati? Plus we have moretickets to give away to go see the
Coral Reefer Band a tribute to JimmyBuffett. But here's what I want to
know. Okay, Yeah, what'sJimmy Buffett's band. It's Jimmy Buffett's band
without Jimmy Buffett, Becausejimmy Buffet passedaway, right ya. I didn't.
(01:58:29):
I did not expect you to adda Jimmy Buffett tribute band to the end
of the Coral Reefer Band. Butnow it makes sense. Yeah, here's
what I want to know, becauseyou've been talking about our guy, William
Hendon right loosely, Yes, theguy who was a tays last night at
gabp SO ten years ago. I'mat a uc Ohio State game and you
remember Anthony Schlegel, oh yes, briefly, former Bengal Like body slams this
(01:58:54):
dude running out onto the field. One of the most iconic photos in audio
state history. Awesome photo, awesomephoto. And it was a young man
from Western Hills. I think hisname is Anthony Wonder. Ohio State student
runs out onto the field, getsbody slammed. Last night we find out
about our buddy, William Hendon, will Ohio State student. Yeah, notice
(01:59:14):
the theme here. I don't knowabout Aunt Wonder, but I know that
the other guy, our guy willhen here. He's on the dean's list.
Uh huh. So there's that.Uh huh. What does that say
about that institution? I think itsays a little bit too much on I'm
looking at a picture of him fromcourt today. This is not the avatar
you want if you're Saint Xavier HighSchool or the Ohio State University. The
(01:59:39):
I think it says a lot moreabout Sate x more than I don't know.
I'm just there is there is acommon denominator here? Where is it
with both cases? I literally saidit earlier today. Don't nobody tell Tony
that that kid went to a hat. I know you didn't attend Ohio State,
so I'm not using this as areflection of you. But what is
(02:00:00):
