About Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsored inpart by Skyline Chile. Stop by Skyline
Chile for a three way or cheezeCony today. Feeling good, It's Skyline
time. This is ESPN fifteen thirtyCincinnati Sports Station. Hi, Hello and
welcome Cincy three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Austin Elmore. Happy

(00:26):
to be with you today, anothersolo show without Tony Pike. Tony will
be back, it just won't beuntil the middle of next week. I
can't wait to have the big fellaback. I'm sure he's chomping at the
bit to come back and join uson Cincy three sixty. We are inching
closer and closer to football season. As you know, that's our bread and

(00:48):
butter here on the show. Inthe meantime, we've got a lot to
talk about and we've got a goodshow in coming up for you today.
First and foremost, the Reds lostagain one nothing to the Pittsburgh Pirates on
a masterful after despite including a masterfulperformance by Hunter Green. I feel bad

(01:11):
for Hunter Green. You'll hear fromthe Reds pitcher in just a couple of
minutes. You'll also hear from theRed Skipper, David Bell, and Charlie
Goldsmith, who is going to beon this show tomorrow. He had to
sit down with Nick Krawl in Pittsburgh, and some of the answers to Charlie's
questions to me are pretty revealing aboutthe direction of this organization. At least

(01:37):
to me, it seems pretty revealingwhat the direction of this organization is going
to be. So we'll talk aboutthat well slightly. Look ahead to the
series coming up with the Boston RedSox, who won again last night,
and preview the next couple of days. The Reds will turn right back around
and play the Pirates Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of next week at Great American

(02:00):
Ballpark after they just dropped two outof three to them in Pittsburgh. Uh,
I want to hear what you thinkabout this ball club. Five P
one three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. That's the phone
number. That's our topic for ournumber one will be all Reds in our
number one. In our number two, we're gonna talk to Joe Daneman Fox

(02:20):
nineteen at Fox nineteen, Joe hisweekly appearance coming on a Thursday this week.
We'll talk to Joe about the Reds. We'll talk to Joe about FC
Cincinnati, and we'll talk to Joea little bit about the Bengals. They,
of course now the flagship TV station. We're bridging the gap, the
flagship radio, the flagship TV.We're gonna bridge the gap. Talk to
Joe about all of those things, and really outside of the Reds, and

(02:45):
I would say, ahead of theReds, the number one story of today
is actually FC Cincinnati and that unbelievableperformance last night at the Fortress on the
West End, beating Philadelphia, ateam with a lot of history between the
FC Cincinnati an unbelievable game. You'vegot Philadelphia on one hand, who's missing

(03:05):
seemingly half their club due to internationalduty. You've got FC Cincinnati, who's
got Miles Robinson an international duty andMatt Miosga is banged up, and they
just came back off of a WestCoast road trip, short week, midweek
game. And it's three to two, it's three to three, it's four
to three. The final score isLuciano Acosta, who has now moved up
into the top ten all time andassists leaders in Major League Soccer history,

(03:30):
trying to chase down landon Donovan uhLuco Acosta unbelievably scores at the very final
minute of stoppage time to give FCCincinnati another win. We'll talk about that
and how it relates to the MLSstandings. It was a crazy night in
Major League Soccer. To begin with. The last night it was absurd.

(03:53):
There were like kids making their debutsthat are like teenagers and their scoring and
there's like three dudes with hat tricks. And there was Luca or I can't
ever say that guy's name, Ornoor or reg No. I don't know
how. You know, you figureout, you know, say the guy's
name. He scored from midfield forFC Cincinnati last night. That that game
was so back and forth, andat the two o'clock hour, at the

(04:15):
start of the two o'clock hour,we'll talk to Pat Brennan from the Cincinnati
Inquirer covers FC Cincinnati. We'll talkto him about what he saw last night
and where this team is at movingforward. Little statistic for you. They
are at a better points per gamepace right now than they were a year
ago when they won the Supporter Shieldin Major League Soccer. So that's something

(04:42):
to talk about. By the way, this review of Yesterday's Top Support Stories
is brought to you by Klaus RoofingSystem of Cincinnati, your trusted local roofing
and gutter company. Visit KRS Cincywith a y dot com. What else
happened last night in the world ofsports? Garrett Cole, the twenty twenty
three MLB American League Cy Young Awardwinner, made his debut yesterday for the

(05:09):
New York Yankees against the Baltimore Oriolesand on locks of the night, I
told you take the Orioles, buttake Garrett Cole to have over five and
a half strikeouts. Well I wentone and won. The Orioles won the
game in ten innings, but theYankees and Garrett Cole did have five strikeouts
in his debut. Yankees are nowfifty one and twenty five. It's insane

(05:31):
how good that team has been. How about Kaitlyn Clark w NBA Action.
Kaitlyn Clark last night has had adouble double and I believe the Indiana Fever
have now won three consecutive games. So watch out. Here comes Caitlin Clark
and her and Kelsey Mitchell alongside ofLeah Boston scored twenty two points apiece.

(05:56):
Caitlin Clark had a double double andthey won their third game eighty eight eighty
one over the Washington Mystics last night. Big news there for Caitlin Clark.
How about some NFL news. TheDenver Broncos have hired former Stanford head coach
David Shaw as an off or asa personnel assistant in the front office.

(06:17):
David Shaw got his start as anassistant coach for many years in the NFL,
coaching alongside Sean Payton back in thenineties. So good news there for
David Shaw, a guy who Ithink will be head coach in the NFL
again someday. Golf action, CharlieWoods, fifteen year old son of Tiger
Woods, has earned his way intohis first USGA Championship. Yesterday, he

(06:43):
had the leading score among qualifiers forthe us Junior Amateur next month at Oakland
Hills. So congratulations to Charlie Woodsqualifying for his first USGA event. The
men's College World Series is now set. It'll be the Texas A and M
up against the number one team inthe country, Tennessee. Although Tennessee did

(07:04):
survive a scare against the Mighty Norseat the beginning of the tournament. The
Aggies, I could not believe this, have never been to the College World
Series finals. Could not believe They'vebeen playing baseball down there for like one
hundred and twenty years. They havenever been to the men's College World Series
Finals. But they are now goingup against the number one Tennessee Volunteers.

(07:29):
So congratulations to Texas A and M. What else last night really exciting television
was the US Olympic Swim Trials. It's crazy that's going on at Lucas Oil
Stadium in Indianapolis. If you haven'tseen this, look up the I think
they did a show about this. Our boss DJ Hodge was telling me that

(07:50):
they did a show on like MSNBC, like a half hour about how they
turned Lucas Oil Stadium, an NFLstadium into the home of the US Olympic
Swim Trials before the Summer Olympics inParis. It's crazy. But yeah,
if you've not seen the I'm blinkingon the word right now. What do

(08:11):
they call that? When they speedit up the time laps the time lapse
video of them turning Lucas Oil Stadiuminto the US Olympic Swim Trials with the
swimming pool and the deck and thestands and the cameras and all that stuff.
It's insane. Look it up.It's really really cool environment. A
bunch of them last night. Ithink a couple of finals still to come

(08:31):
tonight. And the Olympics are justright around the corner. They'll be here
very quickly. I feel like Iknow four people, five people maybe that
are going to Paris for the Olympics. It's insane. And I think you
like win a lottery, and thenwhen you win the lottery, you get
the chance to buy tickets to certainevents, and like swimming is obviously the

(08:52):
most expensive, it's like the mostpopular. Basketball is a pretty popular one.
I know, Soccer, I thinkis relatively cheap. Volleyball, sand
volleyball, the whole nine yards.Uh. I'm excited for the Summer Olympics.
I love the Summer Olympics. AndI'm wondering, I wonder, what
what event would you go to.Let's say you win the lottery to go

(09:15):
to the Olympics. Let's say moneyis not an issue. Let's say you
can go to three Olympics sports. While you're over there at the Olympics,
where you're going what sports you're picking. I want to know. Let me
know five on three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. Leave
a talk back on the iHeartRadio appsearch ESPN fifteen thirty. Tap that little
microphone, leave me a thirty secondmessage. By the way, speaking of

(09:37):
the Olympics, Uh, the threeon three women's basketball team just lost a
huge part of their team, CameronBrink, the rookie star out of Stanford
and playing for the LA Sparks.I mentioned yesterday she had to be carried
off the court due to a leginjury. Come to find out, she
tore her acl She is out forthe season and will miss the Olympics.

(09:58):
In the three on three over there, So tough news for them, and
I think they again. Those basketballteams I think are a little bit in
flux because of injuries and whatnot. So there's still a chance Kaitlin Clark gets
on the regular team. I thinkthey already replaced Cameron Brink on the three
on three team. I don't knowwho all's on the three on three team
for the men, can't remember exactly, But let me know what sport you

(10:22):
would go to if you won thelottery to buy tickets to any Olympic Sport
in Paris, and I think we'rewhat four years away? They have eight
year whatever it is, They're comingto Los Angeles in a few years,
if I'm not mistaken. All right, that is everything that has happened in
the world of sports over the lastlittle bit, as far as I'm concerned,
I probably miss something because I alwaysseem to. But our show,

(10:46):
as it's laid out today reds fromthis point forward. I want to get
your reaction to yesterday. I wantto talk a little bit about what Nick
Crawl said to Charlie Goldsmith and thewords he used in the way he talked
about it, and we'll talk toCharlie about it tomorrow as well. But
to me, to me, itrevealed what this organization thinks about this team

(11:11):
and what the plan will be forthe rest of the year. Also,
I am in a situation, Iam in a spot with this team,
and I give credit to Mo becausehe reminded me before he left over the
weekend where the organization itself does notdeserve patience, but the the young ball
club itself does, and that putsfans in a really difficult position. We

(11:35):
can talk about that as well.Five one, three, seven, four,
nine, fifteen thirty tweeted me atAudiel Moore a U T y E
L M o r e as well, redsludes to the pirates yesterday won nothing.
Who is an all star on thisteam? Hunter Green, Nicolodolo,
Ellie de la Cruz, If youhad to pick one of those guys,

(12:00):
who are you sending to Arlington tobe the All Star for the Cincinnati Reds,
I'm curious to know. We'll hearfrom David Bell what he said after
the game yesterday. We'll hear fromHunter Green what he said after the game
yesterday. In a very very hotday in Pittsburgh. Hot out there again
today another heat advisory, air qualitywarning. If you're out there, be

(12:22):
careful. Shout out to all ofour delivery folks, so I know,
listen to us during the day, make sure you're staying hydrated and healthy.
And I know that it certainly isgoing to be a hot one. And
I think it's supposed to be doneby Friday night, by tomorrow night,
I think it's supposed to be overand done with by then. I don't
know, but hopefully so. Sowe've got Reds the rest of the hour

(12:43):
and your phone calls at five pointthree, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. We'll talk about thepatients with the club and with the organization.
We'll talk about what Nick Kral said, We'll talk about yesterday's game.
We can talk about the schedule movingforward. At the stop at the top
of hour number two Joe Daneman Foxnineteen, we'll stop by for the Reds
FC Cincinnati Bengals conversation. Then followingthat up, we've got talkbacks and an

(13:07):
hour number three start of the hour, Pat Brennan from Cincinnati dot Com will
stop by to break down everything thathappened with FC Cincinnati last night. We'll
kind of map their path forward, figure out the latest on the injury news,
what we learned from yesterday, andmore. We can get a little
Bengals conversation in after that if you'dlike. Saw a couple of minutes of

(13:28):
Loui an Arumo on the Growler Podcastwith Paul Danner Junior and Jay Morrison,
and he had some really cool stuffto say, some interesting stuff to say
about getting rid of the explosive playsfrom last year, the importance of having
a guy like von bellback, andthe defensive line rotation have just a couple
of minutes of that for you thatwe can talk about as well. Then

(13:50):
tomorrow as of now, planning ona regular show Charlie Goldsmith and Tommy g
and then hopefully some good Friday vibesto talk about ahead of a weekend home
stand against the Boston Red Sox.Moegger by the way at the Holy Grail
tomorrow from three to six down thereahead of that game, and today in
the Big Chair from three to sixis Chad Brindle, so Chad will stop

(14:13):
by for quick hits and locks thenight at the end of the show.
Been a while since we've heard fromChad. I'm sure he's got a lot
going on in the Bearcat front.I know Chad bops around all these different
AAU tournaments and various basketball events overthe course of the summer, so I'm
sure he's got some pertinent u SEinformation and preparing for UC to get started

(14:35):
over at Camp Higher Ground here shortlyahead of their twenty twenty four Big twelve
football season. Okay, I thinkI've covered everything. Thank you to our
friends at Klausroofing again karssince dot com, trusted local roofing and gutter company Klausroofing
System of Cincinnati. When we getback Red's conversation, nobody wants to talk

(14:56):
about it, but we've got totalk about it. And I'm almost done.
I think I'm almost done after everythingNick Krawl has said, I am
ready to detach myself from the emotionalinvestment. I think that's where I stand
right now. I'm curious to knowwhere you stand. Five one, three,
seven, four, nine, fifteenthirty tweeted me at audio more or

(15:20):
leave a talkback on the iHeartRadio appOur one of this show is brought to
you by Skyline Chili. Whenever you'refeeling good and hungry, it's Skyline time.
We'll take a break, we'll beback here listening to the Home of
the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati SportsStation. Hey Alexa, what's the latest?
On over to the saw Nattie intothe final third? Nine minutes of

(15:41):
stuff. It's gone Asta towards thegoal A Cousta Acusta into the eighteen.
Whoto Custa's done it after death,Whoto Acusta the captain just Cincinnati a four
three advantage. What a goal? What a oh for the Orange and Bloom

(16:02):
That's what it sounded like last nightright here on ESPN fifteen thirty, Tommy
g on the call as Luciano Acostadoes it again. The captain notches a
win for FC Cincinnati, their twelfthwin of the year and against Eastern Conference
foe Philadelphia Union. FC Cincinnati conversationcoming up in just a little bit.

(16:26):
Phone lines open five win, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty
as well. I want to getto the Reds and start with yesterday.
Hunter Green was just spectacular. Hecontinues to show that he has taken a
step forward and into being the guythat you want him to be, a
guy who was worth the money thatthey've given him, and somebody who appears

(16:49):
to be outperforming that if he continuesdown the stretch he's on. He was
marvelous and he has pitched really, really well in that ballpark in his career.
If you remember, he had likeeight no hit innings or something there
a year ago, se Trent Rosecranshad this stat. Hunter Green has made
four starts at PNC Park. TheReds have lost all four of those games.

(17:15):
In those four games, he hastwenty five and two thirds innings pitched
with ten hits. Three runs, two of them earned, which is an
ERA of zero point seven zero.He has not given up a home run.
He has ten walks, thirty fourstrikeouts, and two hit by pitches
in those twenty five innings. Inthose four games that he has started at

(17:41):
P and C Park, the Redshave scored a total of one run in
those four games. One That isabsolutely ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous that he has
not gotten run support in that ballpark. And I know Lance was was posting
the stat that the Reds just itfeels like forever since they've wonted that ballpark

(18:06):
consistently, like they the record everat PMC Park in the last sixty games
or whatever it is, the Redshave probably lost forty or forty five,
close to fifty of those games. It's crazy how poorly they perform in that
ballpark. Counter Green met with themedia yesterday. Here is Hunter after his
great performance in a loss. Yeah, you know, I was able to

(18:30):
watch two games prior to my gametoday. I think that's really important,
you know, when you're throwing agetaway day, being able to take advantage
of the two days in front ofyou and really paying attention to hit her
swings and obviously it's different. Youknow, it's hard trying to do that
with Nick pitching before me and obviouslytwo different pitchers, but being able to
see spires and see the swings thatthey took against him, and then understanding

(18:52):
some of these hitters. It wasa different lineup than what I faced in
the past, but some of thesame guys, and just being able to
remember that and just moving around andbe able to move the pitches around.
How tough was it the pitch withthe heat today? And it was the
one moment you had a little, yeah, come up. Yeah, I
had a bunch of water in mysystem and definitely hydrated too much, but

(19:14):
yeah, it was it was likeall water when I threw it up.
But yeah, you know, yougot to be strong mentally that much more
on days like today. And uh, you know, Mitch was was keeping
was a good rabbit for me today. Obviously he's a fantastic pitcher and had
a great performance today. But yeah, I was just trying to stay in
there and and mentally stay in thegame. Talked a lot about your splitter,

(19:36):
there was one in particular. Youthrough the Reynolds today, are you
You've got to be happy with wherethat Mitch has developed. Yeah, you
know, I've worked extremely heart inthe offseason and h you know this this
spring training and then in bullpens thisseason, being able to throw it,
throw for strikes, throw it asan expanded pitch, and off in the
zone. So I think it's justbeing able to see my work come together.

(19:57):
And the games were in matt andthat's a good feeling. Red starter
Hunter Green after yesterday's loss in whichhe went six and the thirds, gave
up two hits, no earned runs, and struck out nine on the season,
greenszra down to three point three five. The big part of the game
was Nick Martinez giving up a solohome run to Brian Reynolds, his tenth

(20:21):
of the year, in the bottomof the eighth inning, and then David
Bednar came in and took care ofthe Reds at the end of the game
to put them now at thirty fiveand thirty nine on the season. That
is dead last in the National LeagueCentral. That is dead last in the
National League Central ten games or excuseme, nine games back of the Milwaukee

(20:45):
Brewers, a game and a halfout of the wild card. The Reds
do still have a positive run differential, but we'll get into how much.
I don't really know if I careabout any of that. They've lost six
out of their last ten and arecertainly scuffling before the Austin Red Sox come
this weekend. The Red Sox havewon five in a row, eight of
their last ten, their five gamesover five hundred, and are now comfortably

(21:08):
in third place in the National LeagueCentral and one game out of the wild
card in the American League I shouldsay American League East. One game out
of the wild card in the AmericanLeague. All right, let's go to
the phones. Five, one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. Let's start with Markand Florence. He'll hit lead off today.
What's up? Mark? Hey?Impass all the game yesterday. It

(21:30):
reminded me of Mario Soto back inthe eighties. I will see him lose
games by that all the time.Yeah. And it just what I figured
out is I don't have to callin and say the same thing over and
over again about what the problem is, because what I found out is later
on when the problem surface, everybodyelse is talking about it. You know,

(21:56):
they need a cleanup hit or theyneed a thirty plus home were bad
in that lineup. They got alot of holes in that lineup. I
mean, you can have you canhave the greatest pitching, but if you
don't have a lineup, that pitchingis just going to waste. So to
me, give me the lineup andyou could just give me good pitching.

(22:18):
I think the organization. I didn'thear Nick Crawl's comments that you mentioned earlier,
but I think, in my opinion, I think they got so caught
up with analytics when they bought Davidbell In, and they got so caught
up with that they forgot about fundamentals. They forgot about the basic the basics

(22:40):
of building a baseball team and buildingan organization and bringing players up through the
minor leagues. They forgot about thefundamental things. Because this team is terrible
when it comes to fundamentals. Andin that game yesterday, you just needed
the man of factor a run ortwo, and as you could see,

(23:04):
it reminded me of the playoff gameagainst Atlanta. They couldn't do it.
Yeah, yesterday, you know, they got a handful of hits, they
got two hits yesterday. They couldn'tdo anything. Yeah, I never saw
I saw the Giants when they playedthe Reds. You remember that series when

(23:26):
they came back and swept the Rids. Remember that, You remember that one
I think it was Game three,They scored a run, it didn't have
a hit and in it, soyou that the Reds came manufacturer runs.
They'll lose a lot of close gamesbecause they and I think it goes back
to the organization not emphasizing that. And you see that it comes back.

(23:51):
You know, when within a baseballseason you play a lot of one run
games, two to one, threeto two. You have to win those
games. And I think the philosophyhas to change. We talked about it.
So hopefully at the end of thisyear, they'll sit down and reevaluate
how they're going about, you know, running the show down there, because

(24:15):
if they don't, we'll have thesame conversation over and over every year,
and they'll win. They'll win eightyeighty one games, eighty five games.
They won't win nowhere near ninety gamesdoing it this way. So let me
get off and let the other callersget it. Yeah, Mark, thank
you for the phone call. Yeah, listen, I do think you kind

(24:37):
of bring up a good point there, and in My fear, and we'll
get into it about the Nick Krawlcomments, is that this organization is going
to look around and say, youknow, Freedo was hurt for a good
chunk of the year. And again, part of yesterday's story is that Candelario
was hurt. He had a pinchhit which he swung the bat once.

(25:00):
TJ. Friedel is hurt, didnot play in the game, Tyler Stevenson
got the day off, did notplay in the game. Three of your
better hitters and certainly your best hitteras of late in Candelario. But my
fear is that the organization will lookat this season and say, yeah,

(25:21):
you know, with Friedo being outfor a while, and with Christian and
Carnassio and Strand being down, andwith Noel vi Marte being suspended, and
Matt McClain being hurt and so onand so forth, you know, this
year never really got off the ground. We'll try again tomorrow, that would

(25:41):
be my guest. And I'll readwith read to you a little bit of
what Nick Crawl said, and Iencourage you to go to Cincinnati dot com
and read what Charlie wrote. Howabout this? Since May twenty fifth,
in ten starts by Hunter Green andNicolodolo. They are combined eight to no.
They have eight starts of six inningsor more pitched, they have sixty

(26:04):
innings pitched, fifty nine strikeouts, and the Reds offense has failed to score
more than four runs and ten oftheir last eleven games. It's a stack.
Coming from Charlie Clifford, I mean, just insane. The inability to
put runs on the board for yourgood pitching staff. It's crazy. It's

(26:26):
crazy, and I'm just at thepoint now where it's like I'm stuck and
fans are in a tough spot,as I said earlier, where the organization
really does not deserve any sort ofpatience, but the young guys on the
team do. And that's kind ofsomething that we're stuck in the middle of

(26:47):
right now. We'll take a break, we'll be back. You're listening to
Sincy three to sixty on the Homeof the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty. Is
getting guests at Chevron, Burning ahole in your ESPN fifteen thirty. Welcome
back sincey three to sixty ESPN fifteenthirty. Austin Elmore with you all day,

(27:08):
twenty minutes from now. Joe DanimanFox nineteen stops by looking forward to
talking to him about the Reds,FC, Cincinnati, the Bengals, and
more talkbacks. After that, PatBrnnan the top of hour number three,
I been talking about this piece,Charlie Goldsmith road, I want to read
a quote for you. Charlie askedseeing the team on the field this year,

(27:33):
what's the biggest thing you've learned aboutthe group? Nick Kral says,
it's been good to see certain guysmake progress, especially the younger players.
We are a young team. Weare trying to continuously improve. You're watching
guys go through the maturation process ofwhat it's like to be in your first
or second or third full season. You're seeing guys take steps forward. It's

(27:57):
been a lot of fun to watch. We'd like more wins than we've got,
obviously, but at the same time, we have a positive run differential.
It's been good to see the progressand the steps that a lot of
players have made. Cincinnati dot ComCharlie Goldsmith I have questions about this answer,

(28:19):
primarily the part where he says it'sbeen a lot of fun to watch.
I didn't have fun watching yesterday's gamebesides watching Hunter Green citing run differential.
Yeah, that's a part of theteam's story, but not as important
as the win loss record, andhe talks about that. It's been good

(28:41):
to see the progress in the stepsthat a lot of players have made.
Nick Carl says, what players arewe talking about? I would say you
have seen progress from Nick Lidolo andHunter Green, and I would say Elie
de la Cruz to an extent,I've seen progress from those three players.

(29:03):
Young players that you're referring to.Who else have you seen progress from?
Spencer Steer is about the same aslast year, maybe a slightly better defender.
TJ. Friedo hasn't been around enoughto really evaluate. Jake Fraley has
completely lost all of his power, and while he may have a decent batting

(29:23):
average, does not hit for power, does not hit extra base hits,
has not been great, and can'tplay against left handers. So I don't
see there's any development there. WillBenson maybe has regressed worse than anybody else.
Yeah, he was hitting for powerearly on in the season, but
barely makes contact and misplayed a ballin the outfield the other day. I

(29:45):
wouldn't say that he has progressed significantly. Jimmercandelario is a veteran that you brought
in. He does not qualify forthat. Tyler Stevenson about the same guy
he's been. Luke Mayley has gottenworse. He's a utter into Matt McClain's
not here, Marte is not here. Ellie de la Cruz has certainly taken

(30:06):
steps in that direction, and Ithink everyone is excited about the future that
Ellie brings. Who else who hastaken who has made significant progress as a
young player. I would say GreenLodolo and Fernando Cruz, Graham Ashcraft has
taken a step back, Alexis Diashas taken a step back. That to

(30:30):
me feels like a tone deaf answer. I understand that this team is not
operating the way it was supposed to, and injuries are a part of that.
But from the guys that you areable to evaluate on the offensive side
and to an extent on the defensiveside, what have you what progression have

(30:52):
you seen? I would like toknow what metrics he's referring to that show
him and the organization that there hasbeen progress made. And it also the
part where he says we we'd likemore wins than we've got obviously, but
at the same time we have apositive run differential. All that says to

(31:14):
me is that, yeah, thewins are gonna come for sure, but
we're just going to try to evaluateand develop this team. And I'll read
another quote in a little bit,but to me, based on this conversation,
it feels like the Reds have turnedtheir attention to development, that they
looked around at the injuries and thesuspension and said, you know what,

(31:37):
let's develop this team for another year. I'm not a big fan of that.
Let's go to Mike in La whoI am a big fan of.
What's up, Mike? Well, thank you all. It's very nice.
Back at you, pal. Thanks, Hey all, Reds. I'm going
to talk about nothing else. Well, so, because I know I bore

(31:57):
people a lot of the time.Yeah I do, I know, I
do. I don't mean to,but I think you know, as well
as herder Green pitched yesterday and Mitchellpitched equally good or better. Yes,
you know, we go these sportthree runs in three games, Red stands
they are about to slip behind Oaklandand team hitting. This is not good

(32:24):
and uh and I feel so sorry. For these young guys, because sooner
or later there's gonna be some animosityin that locker room, whether it's spoken
or not. I don't think whereanybody said, don't you think, I
mean, they're only humans. Yougot to get frustrated. Yeah, talking
about the camaraderie, but geez, you can only take so much off.
Yeah, I mean you talk aboutthat stat I just gave about the last

(32:45):
ten starts between Lodolo and Green andthe way that the offense is struggled behind
him. That would piss me offif I was one of those pitchers.
Yeah, yeah, because it's there. You know, it's a team sport.
But let's face it, these guysare really more worried about their stats.
When it comes right down to it, you know that they have to
be. You look at Cleveland, for I was thinking about this, and

(33:06):
everybody's talking about getting a power hitor maybe a veteran. You look at
Cleveland and that are all these guysthey've got that are playing well. It's
still built around many Ramirez. He'sthe rock and that's what we're missing.
And of course he's been there forever, which is a credit to him.
I think I like he's not beinga baseball howler or all these different teams.

(33:31):
Ellie, I think, you know, Lodola might be the only wanted
to thank the All Star team.Maybe not. It's ben us up to
the manager because the voting doesn't theydon't vote on the pictures. Ellie might
make it, if the manager might. There's so many good shortstops it's ridiculous.
And Elie might make it just forthe excitement factor. But you know

(33:52):
he's in in two forty. That'snot easily going to get you in an
All Star Game unless you're there Jeteror that other guy for Baltimore that played
forever. I really the other Thelast thing I wanted to say was I
think what's happened in some regards. Those guys were all new to the link
last year, and there's got tobe something said for pitchers and organizations having

(34:14):
studied these guys. Sure, andthey're catching up to these hitters, and
so we'll see who has the wherewithalto get through it and continue on.
So I just say, look, and this webshock team coming in got me
worried. Austin they could lose twoout of three to now, Yeah,
I think it's a very real possibilitythey get swept. Mike, and thank

(34:35):
you for the phone call. Ithink you talked about the batting average two
forty is like the league average.Right now as a team, the Reds
are hitting two twenty five. StatI'm a little bit more interested in is
on base percentage that's three oh five, that's tenth worst in Major League Baseball.
They're ops on base plus slugging issix seventy five, that is ninth

(34:57):
worst in Major League Baseball. Theyaren't hitting, and they aren't hitting for
power, and yes they have apositive run differential, but to me,
that says more about their pitching thanit does about their hitting. And you
know, again, I just thinkthat they look at this and say,
you know, let's try to developthis team. And this metric of expected

(35:17):
win loss has those two games overfive hundred, but you know, these
close games are going to even themselvesout. I also don't think that Nick
Kral can look at the list ofavailable players out there that he can go
and get. I don't know thatone player comes into this team and heals
all their injuries and fixes all theiroffensive problems, even if you add a

(35:38):
little bit of power, unless youget the team to revert to what it's
supposed to be. Like we sawduring that seven game win streak, where
guys are hitting the ball more consistently, are making more consistent contact, none
of that is going to matter. And when you have such a small sample
size of success, the grander pictureof their offensive struggles tells me that's who

(36:02):
they are. Not a seven gamewin streak or not twelve out of sixteen
or whatever it was. The grandpicture out of the whole eighty games that
they've played is, yeah, they'renot a very good offensive team. And
there is a built in excuse forthe organization this year with the injuries,
in the suspension and the suspensions,to say, yeah, you know,

(36:24):
it's unfortunate. We're going to tryto get these guys as much time as
they can to develop them so thatwe'll be ready for next year. That
I think is the organizational mindset. And they have the second overall pick in
the draft here in a couple ofweeks, and they're gonna draft somebody who
could get to the big leagues ata relatively quick, you know, time
period. They've drafted best player available, and it's worked in some cases for

(36:47):
them and I think rhtt Louder isgoing to be here next year. I
think Edwin Arroyo has a chance tobe here next year. We'll see and
maybe then, you know, thingswill start to, you know, speed
up the progression of this team. But I don't know if that's the case
right now. Let's go to Jeffin Virginia. What's up, Jeff,
Happy Thursday, Austin. Like Ihad, I had no idea on those

(37:13):
PNC Parks stats whatsoever. Like Iguess we can't beat Milwaukee or Pittsburgh.
We are going to be wild cardcontenders every season. That's about what it's
going to come down. Yeah, pretty much. And especially if you can't
win games on the road. Man, Yeah, yeah, that's tricky.
I didn't get to hear all ofthe stuff yesterday. Did Mike bring up

(37:34):
the Willie Mays six hundreds overrun triviaquestion yesterday? I don't think he did.
He talked about Willie Mays, butthat part I don't believe. Okay,
who was Willie May's pinch hitting forwhen he hit his six hundredths home
run? Pinch hitting for with sixhundred, I don't know. George Foster
of all, Wow, how aboutthat because George Foster got traded right that

(37:58):
season. Yeah, yeah, thatthat's a good bar bet. Yeah,
definitely that Reds fans would know. But I think I'm kind of with I'm
kind of with you. I waslistening to the game yesterday, and you
know, it's it's great to watchHunter turn from a thrower into a pitcher.

(38:20):
And you're right, it looks likeLidolo's making progress. That's all good
and well, but you know, the reliance on these guys on offensive side
of the ball just seems nonsensical atthe current time. You know, people
think that Ellie's gonna be the nextreincarnation of Willie Mays, and that's a
long way off type of thing. But I'm tending to agree with you on

(38:43):
on looking upstairs instead of on thefield. I mean, David Bell is
David Bell. I think we allagree somebody might be pulling the strings on
the lineup and whatever, and that'sfine. I mean, that's kind of
modern day baseball. But that youknow, if they might be able to
get that kid from Georgia in thedraft at the number two pick, I

(39:04):
mean, he hit an ungodly numberof home runs this year. That's no
guarantee on that, but you know, in a way it's good for me
because I'm not so close. I'dstill go to games all the time if
I were close enough, and Ilisten and watch on TV. But it's
not as bad as last year, but it's still pretty frustrating. There's no
doubt. But I'm not giving upanytime soon. I think there is a

(39:28):
future, but I just don't knowif we have the right people deciding that
future, I guess, is mypoint. Yeah, and I don't know
that I'm ready to give up.It's just that my expectations have changed and
to the point where I don't expectmuch from them anymore. I'll pay attention
and I hope that they're interesting andI hope that they do well, but
it's like, I don't really Atthe beginning of the year, I expected

(39:50):
them to compete for the division, and they have not proven to be a
team capable of doing that for amyriad of reasons. So now it's just
like, Okay, well, let'ssee if they there is any development between
now at the end of the yearthat can get my hopes up for next
year. Yeah, I hear you, I hear you, But we'll just
have to keep plugging away. Ithink Mike's right, the Red Sox are

(40:12):
hot. Something else to keep aneye on that People in Cincinnati may not
be aware of. This Yankees Oriolesseries starting to turn into a bean ball
war. There's Uh, we gota couple of teams there now. Now
the Orioles have gotten really good.Uh, the competition between them and the
Yankees is getting a little bit heatednight to night. So uh, hopefully,

(40:36):
hopefully in September we see some Yankeesand O's and Phillies and Braves.
I just don't know how the scheduleworks out, but we might have other
things to watch if we don't haveany watch No kidding, all right,
would be the way to say it. Wonderful, Thank you, Jef,
great Thursday often Yeah you too, thank you. Yeah. I'm all for
a bean ball war and teams thathate each other going after each other.

(40:59):
By the way, Lucian Acosta andhis goal last night to put the FC
Cincinnati w in the column is ourpower player from yesterday's game, brought to
you by Cincinnati Tax Resolution powered byTove Sheldon. Luciano Acosta. I'm seeing
a lot of Luciano Acosta versus JoeBurrow on Twitter right now, that could

(41:23):
be a conversation with Joe Daneman. We'll take a break, We'll be back.
You're listening to Sincy three to sixtyon the Home of the Bengals,

Sincy three to sixty, ESPN fifteenthirty. I'm Austin Elmore. A couple
of baseball notes. Tonight at RickwoodField in Alabama, honoring the Negro leagues
and Willie Mays, the San FranciscoGiants take on the Saint Louis Cardinals.
I'm sure that will be an emotionalnight for everybody with the Giants and Cardinals

(42:07):
down there at Rickwood Field, whereWillie Mays got his start. Should be
must see TV tonight. Also anotherbaseball note, the Minnesota Twins are now
forty one and thirty two this season. They are zero to fourteen against the
Yankees, Orioles and Guardians. Theyare forty one and eighteen against everybody else.

(42:29):
That's interesting. And finally, Isee people fighting about Joe Burrow or
Luciano Acosta, who's the best Cincinnatiathlete. What if we just appreciate that
we have two MVP caliber guys playingin the city at the same time,
and then you also got Elie dela Cruz down the street. I mean,
that's pretty cool. We don't haveto, don't We don't have to

(42:51):
pick a side. Can't We justcan't? We just appreciate great players.

T Pike. Does he count asa new dad even though like the kid
is new, but he's been adad for a few years. I don't

(43:35):
know. Tony'll be back next week. I'm sure he has a lot of
great stories from dealing with that overthe last couple of weeks. Everybody's happy
and healthy and looking forward to talkingwith Tony down the line, and more
importantly, looking forward to talking withour next guest, our guy Joey D
Fox nineteen, stopping by for hisweekly visit. Hi Joe, how are

(43:57):
you audi? So is this nowmy chance here to unload my Tony story?
Please? Okay, So last timewe talked last week, we ran
out of time, and I said, next time we talked, let me
give you thirty seconds of a funnyTony Pike story. Oh, here we
go. Tony Pike and I areboth a part of the Matthew Mangeen Junior

(44:17):
Foundation Golf outing a couple of sundays ago, and at this point Tony
is on baby Watch. Okay,he has his phone on full ring,
ready to go. I'm m seeingthis event. He's a featured speaker,
And when he gets up there,he puts his phone up on the podium
and tells everybody, I apologize.I have to have my phone ready just

(44:38):
in case my wife calls at anypoint. It could be the moment I
have to go to the hospital. So I said, I'm going to put
this to the test. So duringthe middle of his featured speech, I
call his cell phone to which he'snever even noticed is it ringing? And
so when he finishes up, hesees he has two miscalls from me and

(44:58):
feels like a boo. But becauseit could have been his wife calling him
and he never would have known theexpected father pat when put to it,
Oh my gosh, that is uh, that is fantastic and Joe not at
all surprising uh to hear that.So that's, uh, that's wonderful.

(45:19):
I have to give him some sometrouble for that. I'm gonna, as
we did last week, I'm gonnalet you pick your own adventure here.
Uh where do you want to startwith the Reds, with FC Cincinnati or
with the Bengals FC Cincinnati because thatgame last night was off the hook?
Dude? What the hell happened atTQL Stadium last night? Let me say
this, and we do this somuch, especially with the NFL because it's

(45:43):
such a short season when it comesto the number of games. Did we
do this with the Reds too?In any sport that we cover, we
watch, we always say, whatdoes this mean for the big picture?
Right? You know, we lookat what FC Cincinnati is doing, the
red to Bengals, whatever, Ithink last night was just a moment in
time where we remember exactly why wego to games, or why we watch

(46:06):
games, or why we follow teams. Simply that was just sports entertainment at
its absolute peak if you think aboutit, and I know everybody listening to
this isn't a huge soccer person, but if you are, or if you
were a casual, last night waseverything that you won from a sporting event.
This is a mid season game asc Cincinnati is down their top two

(46:27):
defenders, one injured, one oninternational break. Philadelphia has half of the
Rouster on international break, and yetwe get this classic at TQL Stadium where
you see greatness be great and that, to me is one of my favorite
parts of watching sports, is whenyou see a great player do great things
and look transcend it. And wesaw that last night from Lucho Acosta.

(46:52):
Just on entertainment value alone, lastnight was as fun of a moment as
you could get from watching a soccergame. Just score a winner and the
one hundredth minute and have it comefrom the reigning MVP. So then after
the game says, I'm like, whant to get better with age? He's
thirty years old and he's still Iwould argue, the second best player in

(47:13):
the league behind Leonel Messi, whois just putting a ridiculous status of the
games he plays. And what wesaw last night was outstanding. It was
fun, it was entertainment, andthat, to me is what sports are
supposed to be about. And wejust got a taste of that last night,
just in the one night, thatone off moment where you got a
moment like that was really cool.Do we in this city underappreciate his greatness?

(47:36):
No, I don't think so.I don't think so. And maybe
I'm speaking for myself because I tryto make this point as many times as
I can, and I understand thatthe power of the NFL and the power
of Joe Burrow, But just onvalue alone, I would argue Lucho Acosta

(47:58):
might be the most valuable sports professionalathlete in Cincinnati to his team because we
saw last year. We saw lastyear the Bengals were on the doorstep of
the playoffs, even without Joe Burrowfor more than half of the season.
At least a healthy Joe Burrow forhalf of the season. And look,
I understand Joe Burrow is the mostimportant athlete in this city by a mile.

(48:19):
But just on value, if youtook Luco LaCosta off e FC Cincinnati,
they probably don't make the playoffs, they probably don't even play entertaining soccer.
What he does for that team cannotbe measured. It's beyond value.
And that's why to me, hewas the most valuable play last year.
You think about it, Austin.Last year he created thirty one goals.

(48:39):
Okay, he created thirty one goalseither assisting or scoring in thirty four games.
He's on pace this year for fortythree, for forty three goals created
in thirty four games. Now,again, he likely isn't going to win
the MVP just because of what Messihas done in the feerom number of games
that he's played, But just value. I've tried over and over again from

(49:04):
the platform, I have to makesure people appreciate what we're watching from Luchowa
Costa and having what I believe isthe most valuable player in Major League Soccer
again this year. I know thatthey have injuries on defense, right now
and Miles Robinson is absent. Thebig acquisition is this team better than last

(49:25):
year's team. They're different, andwe've seen this iteration of FC Cincinnati kind
of grow and start to become whatthey are. I had a chance to
speak with Marcelo Balboa. Marcelo Balboawas a Team USA member, a World
Cup player for a Team USA inthe nineties. He's now an analyst for

(49:47):
Season Pass on Apple TV. Andearly in the season when MC wasn't scoring
goals, but they were playing greatdefense, you know, I made the
argument that they had built themselves tobeat the Crew, that they had four
to five this back line with Mattand Theoska and Miles Robinson and Roman Celentano,
and then you had a playmaker andDeAndre Yedlin and then you just let

(50:07):
Luco do his thing. That thatwas going to be their identity was they
were built to beat the Crew, even though there's that monster in Miami.
But to answer your question, Ithink they're starting to grow into what they
are and we're starting to see playersthat maybe we didn't know how the ability
they have to do what they do. Yuya Kubo has had a big time

(50:28):
year you saw Orizano continue to makesplash plays like a last night. I
mean, come on, now wehave a guy making a goal from half
field and it's an amazing game thatwas. But to answer your question,
I think they're different. I stillthink it's too being determined if they're better.
I heard you last hour say they'reon pace to score more points as
a team this year than they didlast year. So I think your argument

(50:52):
can be made that there is abit concern about the number of goals being
allowed, and it's not just thegame. Without Miles Robinson and without Matt
and Miaka, they'd allowed ten goalsin the last four games, and two
of those games they had those twoguys playing. So I think there's a
little bit of concern there with thenumber of goals that have been scored.
But I do think there's potential nowas long as Luco stays upright and stays

(51:16):
healthy, that this team very muchwill be a player for the Supporter Shield
and then more importantly, a playerfor MLS Cup come time in December.
Why do we feel the need tocompare Joe Burrow to Luciano Acosta and why
is that so divisive right now?Among people on social media. Oh that's

(51:36):
the thing. Yes, people areyou know, people are trying. They're
like drawing a line in the sand. Either you're a Luciano Acosta guy or
a Joe Burrow guy. One ofthem is the best athlete in the city
and the other is not. AndI don't understand why that's happening. Yeah,
it doesn't need to happen, andit shouldn't happen. It should be
something that's celebrated by the city tohave this. I mean, think think

(51:57):
about how many cities in the country. And let's all agree here that Ellie
de la Cruz is not an MVPcandidate right now, Matt McClain is not
an MVP candidate right now, Butcouldn't we see them develop into that here
in the next couple of years. So for how many cities have an MLS
player who was a legit MVP candidate. How many cities also have a quarterback

(52:22):
who's an MVP candidate, and alsoa couple of baseball players who might be
MVP candidates. This is a timethat's pretty unique in Cincinnati to have the
high level peak talent that these threeprofessional organizations have. I'm surprised to hear
that people are drawing a line inthe sand. You're a lucho guy or
a Joe guy. I would thinkthat would lean heavily towards Joe Burrow,

(52:44):
just because of the influence of theNFL, the influence of what he is,
and the understanding that, yes,Joe Burrow is the most important athlete
in Cincinnati, but for his sportright now, for his team right now,
Lucio Acasta. What he doing andwhat he's done the last year and
a half, I think should becelebrated and shouldn't be divisive between the two.

(53:06):
But I think most reasonable people getthat. I'm surprised to hear people
on social media are kind of drawinga line in the sands, so to
speak, and making people choose oneor the other one. They should both
be celebrated for what they are andwhat they bring to the city. Talking
to Joe Danovan Fox nineteen Sports, the Reds aren't very good? Joe,

(53:28):
Yeah, are you ready for this? Watching the Reds aren't? And that's
the funny thing. Like, legitimately, if the All Star Game came around
and they picked three Reds, Iwouldn't bat an eye at it right,
Hunter Green probably deserves to be anAll Star. Nick Lidolo deserves to be
an All Star. La Da LaCruz will probably be picked because it's a

(53:51):
showcase game. And when Major LeagueBaseball want a showcase, one of the
splashiest, most athletic, most uniqueplayers and all of baseball a guy who's
leading a pretty predominant stat category. So you have three legitimates. I would
sing all Star players. And Iwas watching MLB Network last night. You'll
get a kick out of this.So when I get home, I'm unwinding

(54:13):
and you know, having something toeat and watching MLB Network and their coverage
of the day in baseball. Andon the bottom line, when they're showing
all the scores, right, theyshow that day's offensive leaders for each team.
And so for the Reds, youknow, it says one nothing pirates
and under it says Hunter Green sixand the third his numbers. And for
the Reds offensive leader, it saysmainly zero for two two K's stolen base.

(54:37):
That was their offensive leader yesterday becausehe stole of eight. Oh my
god, that's where we were withthat team. And look, you know
you've given the stats. I've heardthe stats about Hunter Green in Pittsburgh.
It's it's it's it's ridiculous. It'sit's quite honestly, it's it's it's kind
of pathetic what the Reds have donein his starts in Pittsburgh against Pittsburgh.

(55:00):
It's it's unfair for Hunter to haveto continue to go out there and pitch
the way he does and not getany support. But this goes back,
Austin, to what you and Ihave talked about here for several months with
the Reds, and look, youknow, there's there's so many what ifs
with this team. And continuing withMLB Network, they were trying to debate
who will be the fourth and fifthteams to make the playoffs, the three

(55:22):
wild card teams, the six teams, and one of the guys, I
think, with Carlos Pena, saidthe Reds. And he made his argument
and he used all these ifs.You know, if Matt McClain, if
PJ. Friedel, if Jake Freleyand Will Benson, all these ifs.
I mean, he is gonna behalf way over this time next week.
I mean, how many ifs canthere be for a team with only half

(55:45):
a season left? But I thinkwe go back to what you and I
have talked about. It's the twotimelines, right, It's it's the development
timeline, and it's also the competingtimeline. And how hard it is for
professional organizations to massage in finesse twotimelines in one season. Because there are
so many players on this team whosedevelopment should be celebrated Nickelodolo, Hunter Green,

(56:09):
even though he's thirty three years old. For Nando Cruz, his development
should be celebrated to an extent.Elideva Cruz has shown signs of development,
but at the same time, they'renot winning. And after what we saw
last year, there was an expectationof winning plots what the Reds went out
and supplemented the roster with so theythought they could do the two timeline thing.

(56:30):
Develop these young players, give themthe avast they need, but also,
at the same time, sprinkle ina Montas, sprinkle in a Candelario,
and then go for it. Andlet's not be let's not bury our
heads in the sand and say thisteam hasn't had terrible luck this year.
They've had terrible luck with injury, suspensions, what have you. But I
think it's really really difficult. We'veseen it before professional organizations to try to

(56:52):
massage two timelines here of development andwinning. Now when you're seeing it being
difficult for the Reds. All ofthat in mind, if you're Nick Crawl,
if you're David Bell, if you'rethe front office, what constitutes a
successful season to you with all thathas happened to this point now that we're
at the halfway point, just aboutOh man, that's hard, Austin.

(57:16):
Those those are internal conversations that lookand I think I think the easiest way
to answer this here is probably gonnabe two different answers from the front office
and the coaching staff and the fanbase, right, And I think mo
has made this point before where therehas to be patients patients with young players,

(57:36):
but also at the same time, there has to be an understanding in
the fan base that this fan baseis out of patience. Right. At
the same time, it's a toughplace for the fans to be. The
club deserves patients, the organization doesnot, right, and it's and it's
harder for the fan base to remainpatient when you were teased the way they
were last year, that it tookit all the way up until the final

(57:57):
weekend. In Saint Louis. Forthe Reds to have a chance to go
back to the playoffs and be sofar ahead of schedule and exciting, and
then to come back this year,How could the expectation not be for this
team to be better? And givenhow many teams make the playoffs now in
Major League Baseball, even if you'rejust marginally better, you're likely going to

(58:19):
make the playoffs. And here weare again with the Reds only a game
and a half out of the finalspot for the wild card. But there's
like seven teams within that game gameand a half realm, so they're going
to be jocking with all these teamsthroughout the rest of the season. How
do you equate success when you wereteased last year, had an expectation,
but then it's coming up short. But also at the same time understanding development

(58:43):
matters for these young players. It'sa really hard thing for the fan base.
And I think the really unique spotthe Reds are in right now where
I'm sure internally the expectation of successis completely different in the fan base,
and I think sometimes that can createa disc between an organization and a fan
base. Maybe that we're seeing rightnow. How much time are you guys

(59:06):
going to spend on Fox nineteen onJoe Burrow being at Fashion Week with Jamar
Chase in Paris. Uh, asmuch as Jeremy Row wants to, because
that's his kind, that's his thing, right, So Jeremy loves to dip
into all these things. He keepsme updated on all these things that are
happening. I saw some picture yesterdayJamar Chase is walking around with a half
million dollar watch. That's that's reallya thing. I think he's got a

(59:30):
what is it a Richard mill orsomething like Richard Millie. I don't know
how it's got. I don't know. It's out of my taxi. Here's
thow it is for. Here's howit is for me, and I understand.
And I would actually like to Iwould like to ask Joe Burrow this
question because I'm not sure he's everbeen asked this question. I'm sure it
has been in a roundabout way.But uh, you know, his celebrity
status has seemed to increase even morethan I thought it could in the last

(59:54):
few months. You know, youknow the guy from Athens, the guy
from Ohio, the guy who youknow talks about work and grinding and all
those things. Uh, you knowit is now a fashion week and you
know, going to whatever that whiteparty is in the Hampton's or early Worth
white and all those kinds of things. How much How does he deal with

(01:00:17):
celebrity? How is he adapted tocelebrity life? I mean, does he
pump his own gas? I meanwhat Joe? I literally had this,
I literally had this conversation on thearea last week. I said, does
anybody see him at Kroger getting groceries? Does anybody see him pumping his pumping
his own gas and you know, taking the dog for a walk or whatever

(01:00:40):
it might be like? That ismy number one question for him as well,
And the conversation bore out of hishis U press conference the other week.
But yeah, how how do youdeal with that? From being somebody
who really doesn't seem to want itor like it that much? How are
you dealing with it? Yep?Yeah, it's really hard because I never
thought Joe Burrow would be the guythat can't go to be dubs and have

(01:01:01):
dinner, right, and he justcan't do that anymore. You know,
I'm sure he has a lot ofthings delivered to his house and he's kind
of a wreck loose and look, you know he said during the season,
like he goes to bed at sevenor eight o'clock at night, and I
guess that would help nullify any kindof a personal life he does have.
So it's almost as if he hasto go out of the country just to

(01:01:21):
try to be himself. But evenyou can see now he can't even do
that because he's getting hawked on thestreet for pictures and it's a hard thing
for Look, if you're somebody that'sgrown up with it, you know,
Lebron James grew up with it.You know, ever since he was probably
thirteen or fourteen. There were cameraseverywhere he went, especially every game he
played. But for Joe Burrow, this is this is almost like you know,

(01:01:44):
twist. It's an overnight celebrity, right that the guy has gone from
the last four years from you know, not playing at Ohio State to a
pretty average season at LSU, andthen his final season at LSU became a
celebrity and it's only grown sin. It's just interesting to me that a guy
that went from the personality that we'veseen. I'm not saying Joe has changed

(01:02:06):
his situation has changed, his personalityhave to change with it. How hard
is that? Because I never thoughtin Cincinnati that it would it would have
to be like this for Joe,but it kind of has become. And
that's no one's fault. That's noone's fault. He's just that big of
a star that that he just can'tbe a normal human being, even in

(01:02:27):
a city like Cincinnati that probably pridesitself on leaving dudes alone. And you
just never see Joe anywhere. Younever see pictures pop up of him here
in Cincinnati. Well, that's whatI was going to ask you. Has
Cincinnati ever seen or had an athletewith this level of fame? I mean,
obviously social media is different now,but like Ocho Sinko, maybe to

(01:02:51):
an extent, but Ocho kind ofembraced it and was out and about.
But like, has there ever beenthat level of a star athlete in this
town? Yeah? I don't thinkso. Obviously, you made a good
point with Ocho. I think thefact that Ocho embraced it so much it
almost disarmed it to an extent.Uh, you know, people just kind
of like, Oh, there's Chad. Isn't he a fun guy? You
know, we'll let Chad be Chadkind of go, or he just threw

(01:03:14):
himself in the middle of it,and you know, therefore it just became
normalized with Joe. It's just, yeah, we haven't had anybody like this.
I mean, you can go downthe list of the you know,
superstar athletes that we've had, thejuniors and obviously the big red machine players,
and that was all before social mediaand all those things. So this
is as unique of a situation withan athlete that Cincinnati probably has ever had.

(01:03:38):
Certainly in my career doing what Ido, we've never had this.
I mean, listen, Austin,we cut into programming on Fox nineteen when
Joe Burrow has press conferences like JudgeJudy will be on it, and Judge
Judy I will put up with anyother syndicated program for ratings. I mean,
people go wild for Judge. Yes, and we're cutting into Judge Judy

(01:04:01):
for Joe Burrow to talk at MiniCamp. Fantastic. Think about that.
That's that's where we are with JoeBurrow. That that's the level of interest
with this guy, and you haveto match it. And then you know,
I understand we're doing it and youknow, we're probably part of the
problem. As far as no,I don't think it's a problem. I
don't think it's a problem at all. Not a problem. Yeah, I

(01:04:21):
I've already kept you twenty minutes.Last week we went twenty eight. I'm
going to give you one minute toanswer this question. Your reaction that the
Bengals are being featured on Hard Knocksin season with the AFC North was what.
I see no downside to it.You know, people talk often about
Look, I bet if you puttruth Serum and Zach Taylor in the coaching

(01:04:44):
staff, they wouldn't want it.They want to be left alone and do
their work and not have cameras around. But as far as it's being a
distraction of more cameras, more people, more attention, I've seen the number
of cameras and people and attention thatare around during playoff weeks, during championship
in weeks, during Super Bowls. This team has no problem with that.
They win playoff games like it's amid season regular season game sometimes. So

(01:05:10):
I don't think there's a downside ofthe Bengals being on Hard Knocks. Look,
this is a very attractive brand. It's an exciting team, full of
a lot of personalities, and Ithink there's a lot of guys on the
team that will like this opportunity toshowcase their personality that that aren't a Joe
Burrow or Jamar Chase that don't getthat as much attention. I think those
guys nationally will get some more attention. The Cam Taylor Brits of the world,

(01:05:35):
the Orlando Browns of the world.Ted Arris will get a nice bump
from this. I'm sure with this, since he had so I think this.
I don't think there's a downside.Look, if we're again, we're
in this for entertainment, right.I know Cincinnati wonts the super Bowl and
that's the end goal. I getthat. But for an entertainment value,
putting the Bengals on hard knocks, this national brand is only good exposure for

(01:05:59):
the Bengals at a time where theycan create a bigger fan base than they
already have. Yeah, and Ithink there is an entirely separate conversation to
be had about the relevance of thefranchise and the importance things like that and
the impact they can have on thefuture of the franchise. You're always very
kind with your time. Thank youso much for stopping by. We'll talk
to you next week. Joey Dthank you. Awcome you the best.

(01:06:23):
Thanks man, all right, thankyou. That is Joe Daniman at Fox

I was a little confused by Stevensonyesterday, especially uh he did not

I was confused why he didn't bea d H yesterday or at least

Yeah, but Aggie's Onesie. I'msure there's somebody out there's got to have
an Algie's onesie. Audie Thursday andit's your boy. You know who it
is. Today's the official first dayof summer. Simmy, two Cuts could

know some folks had the blades downearly this morning. Good luck in the
Thursday Night. Believe league, Timmytwo Cuts, come on, Yes,
sir, shout out to Audie forholding down the Fort sol Thank you,
guys. We said it all lastyear the Reds were ahead of schedule.

(01:09:26):
While they didn't make improvements, allthey did was raise the floor. Doesn't
necessarily raise the ceiling until they dothat. Heartbreakers last night like last night,
will probably be the norm. Somaybe we should just root for the
young guys and hope for the best. Maybe management will get it together.
If they were on if they wereahead of schedule last year, that means

(01:09:47):
they're supposed to be ahead of Thatmeans they're supposed to be on schedule this
year, right, they say thatcorrectly? Hello, this is former President
Ronald Rake. What about Ronal? That lifeless Reds? It reminds me of
the Great Depression. But like mypredecessor Franklin delan or Roosevelt, I will
encourage you with these words, folks, we have nothing to fear but the

(01:10:12):
Reds lifeless offense itself. Mark gotyour wish and they about a lead off.
The Reds offen sure looked a lotdifferent than Yeah, they were hot,
Joel McKeithen, what would you sayyou do here? Washington Red on
offenses like Washington firefighters trying to putout fires route water f C Cincinnati scored

(01:10:33):
more last height than the Reds ofthe entire series. Insane against the insane?
What are we doing? Somebody's gotto be held accountable at some point,
Yeah, I mean, I don'tknow who that would be, you
know, I hear you. ThoughIndia did have one of their two hits,
I think my Summer Olympics for one, definitely would be gymnastics, and

(01:10:54):
then poke around, maybe a coupleof outdoor spots, rowing, our riflery,
maybe some of those things, justso you're not cooped up inside all
day. Fair enough. I don'tthink there's any rets player that actually deserves
to be in the All Star Game. But if it had to be somebody,
I would say Hunter Green or FernandoCruz. If there was an All

(01:11:15):
Star Pins runner, I would sayElie, But there's not an All Star
Pins runner. Also, All Starvoting is it has become a joke in
general. Number two in voting theshort stops and he ain't even been playing.
Zekiel Tobar is number two in everystatistical category and shortstops and he ain't
even top five in voting. Yeah, I agree All Star voting is done.

(01:11:38):
I think they should let players doit and coaches and staff do it.
I don't think fans should be allowedto vote for it. I do
agree on Fernando Cruz though he's definitelyhad an All Star caliber season. Sorry
one other thing, and Marcelo Zunaleads Otani in literally every single category,
and Otani has double the votes,So I mean, I don't even All

(01:12:00):
Star voting does even matter anymore. It's also a little surprising considering how how
big the Braves fan base is.Although I know Ozuna is not the most
popular player on that team, uhin more ways than one. But Otani
is international global superstar. I've alwayssaid this fan voting. Fan voting is
dumb. Sorry, I take thatback. We do have more to fear

(01:12:23):
than the Reds offense itself. Oh, we have their base running their defense,
the decision making by their manager.Yeah, their fundamentals huh, et
cetera, et cetera. Yes,thank you, mister president. Yea.
I send God here. What's up? Lord? Since you're the talkback coordinator,

ten minutes from now on FC Cincinnati. In the meantime, more conversation around

(01:16:05):
the Reds. Referring to the piecethat friend of the show Charlie Goldsmith wrote
on Cincinnati dot Com, I encourageyou to go read the entire thing.
I shared one answer earlier, andit's a Q and A with Red's President
of Baseball Ops Player Personnel GM whateveryou want to call him, Nick Krawl,

(01:16:26):
And I'm going to share another answerwith you, another question, another
answer. The question from Charlie iswhen you're making big picture decisions with the
team, how are you balancing puttingguys in the best position to develop with
putting the team in the best positionto win in the very short term.

(01:16:46):
Has that balance shifted at all thisyear? First of all, great question
by Charlie. Secondly, the answerfrom Nick Krawl. It's a constant conversation.
Let's say you have a younger playerthat you don't want to be a
platoon guy, and you watch togive him some opportunities, or give a
guy some leverage situations out of thebullpen. That's something that we're having constant

(01:17:11):
conversation about how much leeway you wantto give a guy. You want to
give a guy enough leeway to continueto improve. You also want to make
sure you're making the right decisions thatgive you the best chance to win ball
games and get into the playoffs. The goal is to make the playoffs and
win the World Series. You've gotto keep that in mind at the end

(01:17:34):
of the day. And to quotefrom Nick Krawl, so he basically just
said what we've been talking about andwhat Joe Daniman referred to as trying to
massage the two timelines of development andwinning. I understand that development in the

(01:17:59):
big picture is crucial to the winning. I understand that that makes a lot
of sense. I get it.I think most fans do. But I
am at a point now me personallywhere I'm just gonna try to enjoy watching
the good players on the team.I'm going to try it. I'm going

(01:18:24):
to try to enjoy watching the development. But all I want to do is
win. That's all that matters tome. I'm tired of waiting on it,
and I've kind of just given upon the idea that it's going to
happen this year, and I hopethat I'm wrong. I would love nothing
more than to be wrong, butI've kind of just given up on the

(01:18:45):
idea that it's going to happen thisyear because of everything that's gone on and
because to an extent answers like this, this is a season that it feels
like to me, the Reds havelooked at all that's happened, said,
we're gonna worry about development. We'regonna try to keep it close. We're
gonna try to make the playoffs, but this is about development. They still

(01:19:08):
have many of these guys under contractfor the foreseeable future, and I'm sure
they feel confident about that. AndI have not hated the moves that Nick
Kral has made in the past, and certainly not in the offseason. Candelario
I thought was a fine move.Didn't understand it at the time, but
it ended up working out. EmilioPagan was okay. Some of these other

(01:19:30):
acquisitions Nick Martinez, they've been okay, Like I had no problem with that,
and the pitching staff is better thisyear than it was last year.
I'm just tired of waiting, andso yeah, I'm gonna watch games,
and I hope that Elie de laCruz does something cool and I hope he

(01:19:51):
hits a four hundred and seventy foothome run, and I hope that Hunter
Green keeps pitching, you know, one hit games and nine strikeouts. Nickelodolo
makes people look silly, and FernandoCruz is losing his mind on the mound
throwing that splitter. But I've kindof just removed the expectations at this point

(01:20:14):
because it's about development. I'm goingto be here when they win, and
it's going to be great, andI'm going to love it, but that
doesn't seem like something that's happening inthe near future. I think the numbers
show who this team is all together, and the injuries and the issues that
they have faced just makes me thinkthey look around and they say it's about

(01:20:40):
development, because there is no onepitcher or no one power hitter that is
going to come into this team andfix all the issues that they have offensively
and heal all the players that theyhave injured. There is no promise that
Relvi Marte is going to come upto the big leagues and hit at the

(01:21:01):
same clip he did last year. There is no promise that Ellie de la
Cruz is going to make more contactthan strike out as much as he has.
There is no promise that Matt McClainis going to return. Those things
aren't solved by acquiring a power hittingoutfielder. It doesn't make Will Benson a

(01:21:28):
better hitter. It doesn't make GrahamAshcraft a better pitcher. It doesn't soothe
Alexis Daz in the back end ofthe bullpen. It just doesn't doesn't matter
who you bring in. It's notgoing to fix all those problems. It
doesn't make the Milwaukee Brewers worse. You know, it's not going to slow

(01:21:49):
down those good teams in the NationalLeague. I'm just kind of at the
point where I'm accepting that this teamis probably not going to compete for a
playoff spot this year, in thatit is about development. I know they
are one and a half games out, and I know they can get hot.

(01:22:12):
I saw it last year, Isaw it earlier this year. But
I feel like I have seen moreregression than progression, and through eighty games,
I have a pretty good idea ofwho they are more than who they
aren't. That being said, Iwill stick to my word over the next
ten days. If they can getto five hundred, I'm all in in

(01:22:33):
the thirteen before the All Star Break. I have a hard time believing that's
going to happen. A team that'sall in and playing great at the moment
is FC Cincinnati. When we comeback from the break, we'll talk to
Pat Brennan from Cincinnati dot Com aboutthe Orange and Blue and what happened last
night at TQL Stadium. Stick aroundfor that. You're listening to Sincy three

(01:22:56):
sponsored in part by Pennstation East Coastaand crafted hot grilled subs, fresh cut

Hello, Welcome in our three sincee three to sixty of Austin Elmore.

(01:23:17):
For another hour. We'll be joinedby Chad Brenda at the end of
the show for quick hits and locksof the night. He's in for Moe
Egger. We've talked Red's, wedabbled in Bengals, we talked some FC
Cincinnati, and now we're gonna talksome more FC Cincinnati. After an unbelievable
night last night at TQL Stadium,FC in the very last moment takes down

(01:23:41):
Philadelphia Union thanks to Luciano Acosta andothers and primarily the MVP. And joining
us now to break it all downis Pat Brennan from Cincinnati Inquirer covers the
Orange and Blue. Pat, letme start by asking you this, what
the hell happened last night at TQLStadium, Austin. Thanks for having me
on, man. I mean, what we saw at t qul Stadium was

(01:24:04):
one of the best games that wewill see all year come out of MLS.
That was you know, that wasever I think as a casual fan,
that's just a great night out atthe stadium. The action, I
mean, you got two teams thatreally don't like each other going a fit

(01:24:28):
for tat high You know, itwas a high octane thriller. Great goals
were scored and ultimately I think thebetter team won too, so there was
justice in the outcome and it wasjust it was it was one of those
special nights that at TQL Stadium thatjust kind of perpetuates this thing that this

(01:24:51):
mojo around f C Cincinnati. Youknow, people go, they enjoy themselves.
They they see things that make themout that they were there, They
go home, tell their friends, and then they're gonna come back and do
it again. Yeah, it's justit was one of those nights at tqol
Uh. Luciano Acosta is just anunbelievable talent and what he was able to

(01:25:13):
do last night, obviously the reigningMVP. Do do we sometimes underappreciate his
greatness in this city? Yeah?I think we do. You know,
it's really interesting I've seen this isprobably I'm just getting this on my ex
slash Twitter feed because I'm so lockedin on FC Cincinnati stuff and all that

(01:25:33):
junk is being fed to me onmy feed. But like people are debating
right now. Again this is probablyf C Cincinnati people mostly, but people
are debating if Luciano Acosta is abetter athlete in the city than like Joe
Burrow, which is just that's crazyto me. Like I'm real yeah,

(01:25:55):
I'm realistic about you know, theplace MLS is wrung in our sports culture
and the I just yeah, theidea of an m LA, even an
MLS superstar, like a superstar inMLS terms, approaching someone of Joe Burrow's
stature. I kind of want todismiss that, like off right off the
bat, you know, but Imean, hey, listen, he's he

(01:26:17):
He is out there representing the city. Luco Acosta is in a magnificent way.
He is clearly one of, ifnot the best player in Major League
Soccer right now. And even thatpeople might want to dismiss that too because
you think, well, Lionel Messi'sin this league. He's the greatest ever
played the game in the minds ofa lot of people. But uh,

(01:26:38):
you know, Messi is the thingabout Messi in the reason Luco is kind
of catching him in a lot ofstatistical in a lot of statistics right now,
Messi is away with Argentina for aninternational tournament, So you know,
it's the MVP of MLS goes tothe best Major League Soccer player, not
the best Major League soccer player wholeaves his team for two months to go

(01:26:59):
play in Copa Marria. So youknow, Luco is one of the best
to do it in this league, one of the best to do it all
time in Major League Soccer. Andthe way he represents and puts on for
Cincinnati is right now, it's reallyspecial. It brings a positive light to
the city for sure. Well, you're not the only one that's seeing that
on social media. I've already putit out there. I'm like, we

(01:27:20):
really don't have to pick one,we can just have both of them.
I don't know about picking one,but how likely is it? Do you
think because of the fact that Messiis gone for an extended amount of time
and the way that Acosta is playing, do you think it's possible he could
get a second MVP back to backyears. Yeah? Absolutely, I think

(01:27:43):
right now he would be. Imean, if the season doesn't stop today,
this is obviously strictly hypothetical, buttoday, I think anyone who's being
honest about you know what Acosta andFC Cincinnati have achieved to this point,
you would have to vote for himfor MVP. He's now leading the league
and assists. He has nine goals. That's not as many as Messi's thirteen,

(01:28:06):
but six of Lucco's nine goals weregame winners. He's not just scoring
for quantity, it's the timing andthe impeccable timing of when he's scoring.
It's just a clutch gene that certainlyI've c Cincinnati's never seen before, and

(01:28:28):
maybe to the point people are tryingto make about this Burrow versus a Costa
thing is, you know, it'sjust it's just rare in general to find
it across sports, the ability toperform in the biggest moments like this.
So I think a Costa will absolutelybe in the conversation come season's end.
And yeah, like I said,I mean that's going to be an important
factor for you know, I hopeMLS does a good job policing and instructing

(01:28:54):
people on this MVP vote. Youknow, there are people that are around
the league every day that get tovote for it, and then I think
there are some other people that maybeare you know, yeah, the MLS
media ecosystem is fragile and not everyoneis around it every day basically, So
I hope that there's some instruction givento people and little reminders like, hey,

(01:29:15):
you know, you don't hold itagainst Messi that he was away representing
his country, because it's a greatachievement. But the fact of the matter
is that was time missed and whilehe was gone, Luco Acosta was in
the league carrying the torch for whatright now looks like the best team in
the league. Is the best teamin the league by some important metrics.
So yeah, I think by theend of the year, Luca is going

(01:29:39):
to be right there in the conversation. If I'm not mistaken. This club
has a higher points per game rightnow than they did at this point last
year. They obviously win the Shieldlast year. Is this team better than
last year's team? Pat, That'sa great question, that's a really good
question. I don't think I havea great answer. Well, you know,

(01:29:59):
point it out last night on Twitter, and I wrote a little bit
about today and kind of my followup story from the game last night.
You know, the way FC Cincinnatiis winning right now, it's amazing,
it's thrilling, but it's it's alittle bit sketchy. They're scoring four goals
a game, and that's ultimately beenthe difference. But they're allowing to and
three goals a game, which forsome of the casual soccer fans out there

(01:30:23):
who don't follow the game as closely, you know, those are that's a
lot of goals to be giving up, and it's a ton more to be
scoring. Either of those things shouldhappen with the regularity that they're happening right
now, So you know, inthat respect, I want to say that
it seems like FC Cincinnati has morein a weird way. I think they

(01:30:44):
are better often right now, andyet they also have more flaws. It's
kind of paradoxical if I'm thinking aboutit on the spot right now, and
yeah they are they are. Yeah, like you said, that was one
of the metrics you know, youpoint to to to clearly know that Cincinnati
is ahead of Miami by some metrics. And it's crazy to think that after

(01:31:05):
last year's near, you know, season long record hall of points, they
could be actually in a position toimprove on that, but they are,
and I think for that reason youhave to say they're better. But you
know, between injuries and some personneldefinite deficits, I think you have to

(01:31:25):
say too that Cincinnati has more glaringproblems to address right now than they did
last year. So sure, strange, strange confluence there, but really good
question by you talking to Pat Brennanand Cincinnati Inquirer covers FC Cincinnati. Let's
talk about some of those problems. We know that Matt Miosca, Matt Miosga
is hurt. We don't know howlong it'll be. It could be an
extended absence. We know Miles Robinsonis away from the team right now.

(01:31:49):
That obviously is where they put alot of their focus in the offseason.
Walk us through some of the injuriesand issues that this team is facing down
the stretch as we get into lateJune into July. Yeah, and the
interesting thing about this is that they'rethey've come out of kind of the longest
pause they will have during the courseof the year, this June international window

(01:32:13):
for national team matches. That's inthe rear view now, So you know,
that was that's kind of the bigmoment of opportunity for guys to heal
up from anything nagging during the kindof the first half of the season.
And like I just said, that'sin the rear view now. So Matt
mi Osgays is the fulkrum that justso much is hinging on when we hear

(01:32:41):
what exactly he's dealing with. Myantenna is up in that situation. I
don't nothing the farious. I don'tmean to suggest anything like that, but
f C Cincinnati's being very very secretiveabout the situation, and I do think
part of that is because they justdon't have a full grasp on the whole

(01:33:04):
situation with what Matt's dealing with. They're waiting to get more information, but
I don't remember a prior instance inthe team's history, which is almost a
decade long now, where someone gothurt an important player, and it took
this long to kind of figure outwhat the situation was and its totality.

(01:33:28):
So the whole thing, you know, Lucho cost him me kind of a
half comment last night that made itsound like maybe he expected Miosga would be
out for an extended period that hasn'tbeen confirmed yet, like you said,
But yeah, I mean me,Oska is the big thing we had kind
of have to wrap our arms around, and hopefully we should be able to

(01:33:50):
do that by tomorrow afternoon there shouldbe some more information on his status and
then you know, when we getMiles Robinson back. He's away with the
US men's national team for Copa Americaright now. He could miss up to
seven matches for that, but hecould miss all the way through to the
knockout stages of League Cup in Augustif he participates in the Olympics, and

(01:34:13):
Pat Noonan voiced frustration around that situationbecause MC Cincinnati really doesn't know what Miles
status is relative to the other bigteam. He could go as one of
their three overaged players. It's mostlyunder twenty three tournament Austin, so he
could go and be one of theveteran guys as a twenty seven year old,
But it remains to be seen ifhe's going to get that call up.

(01:34:34):
So s C. Cincinnati's in alittle bit of an unfair position with
that. And you know, youlast night, two of the goals that
Philadelphia scored were you could say,you know, just my immediate reaction was,
yeah, those were a product ofMiles and Matt not being there.
Having both of them out. Youcan manage without one of those guys,

(01:34:55):
but not having them having both ofthem for an extended period that could potentially
even necessitate a personnel move by fC Cincinnati. So anxious stuff there with
the center backs. What is thetimeline on when we would know about Miles
Robinson going to the Olympics. Idon't know what the final date is for

(01:35:16):
the US to submit its roster.I would assume that's in the next few
weeks. But you know, Ithink there's some I mean, part of
the reason that C Cincinnati is frustratedis because I think there's some expectation that
they would have already been They wouldhave already known, you know. I
mean, if if you're naming theOlympic team outside of injuries, you know,

(01:35:38):
the coaches and the program should haveI mean, not much is gonna
change between now and the start ofthe Olympics, So I would think that
there should be a pretty good assessmentin on what that roster is going to
look like. And I certainly theasking Pat Noonon about it last week,

(01:35:59):
the sense I got the strong pansI got from him with that they would
have liked to have known by now. So I don't think the deadline has
come yet, but yeah, it'sI guess it's going to go down to
the wire. A lot of stuffto pay attention to for FC Cincinnati back
at home this weekend against New England. Pat Brennan has been our guest covers

(01:36:20):
FC Cincinnati for Cincinnati Inquirer, Pat, what's the best way for people to
follow along with all your coverage ofthe Orange and Blue. Yeah, X
is a great place to reach out. I love, you know, interacting
with people on X even though youget some crazy stuff there, but it's
at Pee Brennan E and Q bR E N N A N E n

(01:36:41):
Q and I love getting back topeople who hit me up. Go for
it, fantastic. I look forwardto reading your piece comparing Luciano Acosta to
Joe Burrow. I look forward tothat, Pat, Thank you. I
have made no such promise. Austinfat Brennan take it easy, man,
Thanks a lot, you too,Buddy, is Pat Brennancincinnati dot Com.
All right, good stuff, FCCincinnati taking control of this city at least

(01:37:08):
for another month until now. I'mkidding. I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
FC back in action against New England. That's going to be Saturday night on
right here on ESPN fifteen thirty. We'll have Tommy g tomorrow to kind of
look ahead to that game and findout some more information from Pat Noonan when
he talks tomorrow. Okay, phonelines are open five one, three,

(01:37:30):
seven, four, nine, fifteenthirty. Anything you want to talk about,
whether it's comparing Joe Burrd a LucianoAcosta, the most famous athlete in
the history of Cincinnati sports, whoit is, whether or not you what
Olympic sports you would go to ifyou were picking an Olympic sport over there
to go to coming up any ofthose things we can talk about. We

(01:37:53):
can maybe get into some more ofsome nick crawl and what he said to
Charlie Goldsmith might save that for tomorrowwhen we do talk to Charlie. Lance
McAllister wrote something that I find reallyinteresting too about the the the way that
this city kind of struggles with stars, and I feel like Lucianoacosta might be

(01:38:13):
the exception to that rule. That'ssomething I want to get into a little
bit tomorrow as well. And alsoLuennarumo spoke with Paul Dayner Junior and Jay
Morrison in the Growler podcast and saidsome interesting stuff about the Bengals defense that
we could get into. Plus halfan hour from right now, Chad Brindle
Bearcat Journal dot Com. He's infor MOO this afternoon from three to six.

(01:38:34):
He'll stop buy for quick Hits andLocks of the Night. I'm astin
Elmore. You're listening to our threeof Cinty three to sixty, brought to
you by Penn Station East Coast subson the Home of the Bengals. Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty is no Better.Later on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports
station, Welcome back since A threesix the ESPN fifteen thirty. You remember

(01:39:12):
a couple of weeks ago we weretalking about Madden and Joe Burrow being on
the cover of Madden. Well thatdidn't happen. It's Christian McCaffrey. Today
they released the Madden twenty five revealtrailer. All the new stuff that's supposed
to be in the game, allthe new gameplay, It looks awesome.

(01:39:34):
We got any Madden players out there, We're gonna have to do something this
year where me and Tony play Madden, or we have some people into the
studios or something, or maybe wedo some sort of stream where we play
Madden against you guys. I loveMadden. I will have been playing Madden
for twenty years. And last yearI was a a what we call a

(01:39:58):
connected franchise where it's me and thirtyone other guys and each team controls a
franchise and you play games like everytwo days or whatever it is, and
just sitting here today can't wait forthat. I put way too much time,
effort, and energy into that franchisetrying to actually be Duke Tobin and
Zach Taylor and Joe Burrow and watchingthat trailer today, I'm fired up for

(01:40:23):
it. So I don't know ifwe have any other Madden fans and listen
to the show, but I'll beMaybe I'll post some clips on social media
and stuff this year, play somegames against some listeners, do something fun
like that, something we could certainlybe better at, something the Bengals could
be better at. Here's a transitionfor you is defense and primarily explosive plays

(01:40:45):
on defense. A lot has beenmade about the offense. And actually I
heard something that Tom Brady said yesterdayor two days ago when he was on
with Colin Cowherd, and it feltto me he isn't but it feels like
he's talking about the Bengals in theBengals offense, and we're going to bring
that to you to tomorrow what Tomsaid and how the Bengals fit into that.

(01:41:11):
And on the flip side of theball, we have talked a lot
about the secondary and about von Bellreturning and all the kind of different pieces
in and out on the Bengals defensein which they have to get younger and
cheaper. With Burrow having a bigdeal with Higgins on the franchise tag with
Chase about to sign a huge contract, and Loui Anna Rumo was on the

(01:41:34):
Growler podcast with Paul Daanner Junior andJay Morrison, and he was asked about
explosive plays and about the secondary andabout being able to kind of come up
with a rotation on the defensive line. And I thought there was some really
good stuff in here from Loui AnaArumo. Again, you can listen to
this on the iHeartRadio app or whereveryou get your podcast. It's a really

(01:41:57):
cool snippet into the mind of louisannArrumo, starting with how to prevent so
many of those explosive plays this year? Yeah, I just think making everybody
aware of First of all, yougot to just let's alert everybody. Okay,
these are the things that happened,These are the things that caused us
to be inconsistent last year. Andas we mentioned, it starts with that,
right, It starts with the explosiveplays and chunk plays where you just

(01:42:21):
can't give up and you know, letting everybody see it, letting everybody know,
hey, this is what's why.How can we play this better?
Can we you know, adjust somethingfrom a scheme standpoint. You know,
we put all those things together andthe players were shown it, and I
think we came out of the springknowing that, you know, feeling good
about where we're at and knowing thatthese things, you know, they just

(01:42:44):
don't help you win. Talking toJoseph Osai last week and he said,
that's all that you guys have talkedabout this offseason, that it has been
a big emphasis is there is therea change that that you put in It
gives you the most confidence that thatit will be better this year. I
mean again, I think it's justbeing uh, you know, open and
honest with the guys that we've youknow, like we've always tried to be.

(01:43:08):
Is that it's not okay, youknow, the the you know,
my bad doesn't work. You know, it's it's here's what's here's the things
that went wrong, and here's howwe're going to fix them. And you
know, and they're they're well awareof it. So it's good. I'm
glad to hear Joseph say that. You know, I mean a lot of
the what you get personnel, whereyou know, communication is going to be

(01:43:28):
emphasized between Vaughn and Gino on theback end, and and the growth that
you're expecting communication wise from a lotof other players around them. Where's that
at with von and Gino and JordanBattle throw him obviously in the mix two?
Where is that at? In yourmind? Are we at that four
hundred level? Are we back totwo hundred? I know Jesse and Jesse
and Vaughn obviously operated in the Masters. I don't know where we're at.

(01:43:51):
We're starting out of the program herewith these guys. Yeah, we're we're
we're coming off of a uh probablya three hunderd level course. We're in
summer session. By the time weget back, I think we'll have a
four hundred level course going again. But no, I think you know,
you insert Vaughan back in it,and Geno comes with that same cut from

(01:44:13):
that same cloth, and Jordan Battlekeeps getting better at things. So we're
drastically improved with that portion and thatpart of the game from where we were.
The concept of defensive line rotations, you have so many options this year.
You know, you've got a lotof versatile pieces there. You want
to get Miles Murphy more run,You've got Sheldon and Jenkins and Hill and
like all these different guys, howdo you you know, how do you

(01:44:36):
approach that? Is there more ofa desire to really come in waves this
year than the past? Partially becauseyou lose a guy like Reader, maybe
we go the moneyball route replace himin the aggregate, right like, you're
gonna try to have a couple ofdifferent guys that can kind of fill And
how much more do you feel likea rotation going deeper is what maybe better

(01:45:00):
fits where you guys are at nowor something that you strive to try to
accomplish this year more. Well, you know, I think it's a good
point. And I think that mostof the guys, you know, we're
going to start always most teams dowith a healthy D line rotation just because
those guys, bigger guys that gettired, You want them fresh in the
fourth quarter when it matters. So, you know, you kind of hit
the nail on the head. We'retrying to see how we can replace DJ

(01:45:24):
with maybe a couple of different pieces. You know, the two young guys
will play big roles in that, you know, and with Chris Jenkins and
McKinley Jackson, so you know, well that stuff will get all ironed out
in training camp. It's hard tojudge any player in the spring, especially

(01:45:45):
O line and D line. It'sjust their jobs are required to hit somebody
every play, and you know wehaven't done any of that. So while
those guys have done everything we've askedand done a good job with what they've
been presented to do, it'll it'llshow itself as we get through training camp.
Think about again thinking about things onpaper right now, because that's the

(01:46:06):
only way you can really think abouthim. All the different mix and matchabilities
and the eye candy of a newoffense with a younger, perhaps quicker,
perhaps stronger, perhaps better, perhapssmarter defense. If they could have just
cut half of those explosive plays downlast year, they're probably in the playoffs.

(01:46:30):
Obviously, the Burrow injury threw theseason off the rails, but Jake
Browning steered him back on and thedefense just wasn't enough at times last year
to overcome. I mean, thinkabout the big George Pickens play in the
way that Kenny Pickett time and timeagain delivered against the Bengals in that Christmas

(01:46:51):
Eve game or whatever. It was, like those sorts of moments where that
defense was so close to being ableto get this team up a notch and
they weren't, And you know,it probably would have resulted in a first
round exit in the playoffs. I'massuming, but you never know once you
get there. And I just thinkbeing able to share some of that stuff

(01:47:15):
up and the wild card being andagain I had employed to listen to the
whole podcast and Louis shares some storiesabout like what von Bell back in the
building has meant to this team alreadyand how he very much feels like Geno
Stone is cut from the same cloth, and how that can lead to a
lot of good stuff on the backend of that defense where there is better
communication and better understanding. And thinkabout Jordan Battle again, a kid with

(01:47:41):
another year under his belt, CamTaylor Britt with a year under his belt.
There's gonna be growing pains for sure, especially with Dax Hill playing out
on the outside. I mean, but how great is it for Dax to
have the opportunity once we get intotraining camp to go up against that myriad
of wide receivers every day. He'sgonna be going up against a bunch of

(01:48:01):
different guys outside Jamar Chase t Higgins, Mike Gasicki, Jermaine Burton, andre
Yoshibash, all of those guys providesomething different, a little bit of everything
that you'll see from a wide receiveracross the NFL. You're gonna see if
you're Dax Hill each day in trainingcamp. Now, if I'm Louis Rumo,
I'm saying you follow Jamar Chase everywherehe goes, or you and DJ

(01:48:26):
Turner are splitting reps with Jamar Chase. Whatever it is, that good of
an offense and that good of aquarterback on the other side are gonna make
you better over the course of atraining camp. And we talked about it
again yesterday as well, kind ofthe whip around the AFC North. One
of the concerns for all three ofthose teams outside of the Bengals is their

(01:48:50):
wide receiver depth. Cleveland has aMarii Cooper and Jerry Judy. Amari Cooper's
not happy with his contract, wasn'tit any of their offseason stuff? And
Zach Jackson and The Athletic wrote abouthow he has serious questions about that position.
Mark Cabilely for The Athletic Pittsburgh saidthe same thing about behind George Pickens

(01:49:12):
the Steelers don't really have anybody thatyou feel like is a threat to you.
Now Arthur Smith and that U offenseand a new quarterback. It's gonna
be a lot of different stuff. But in those two matchups right there,
I give the Bengals the advantage intheir secondary. And obviously with Baltimore,
Odell Beckham Junior is out the door, Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. They're

(01:49:33):
a run first team, always willbe. But they've got three offensive line
spots up for grabs. How doesthat affect your ability to get to the
quarterback? How does that affect theirrun game? And if you're able to
build leads on teams where they can'trun the ball on you. I mean,
I like where the Bengals stack upagainst the rest of the division right

(01:49:55):
now, more than I did atthis point a year ago, and certainly
more than I did last year duringthe season. And I think the secondarying
being able to limit those explosive playsis going to be a huge part in
this team's success as much as anythingelse will be. And again that starts.
Those explosive plays don't just happen throughthe air, they happen on the
ground too. I said it athousand times last year. I'll say it

(01:50:17):
a thousand times this year. Theyhave to be better stopping the run.
There might be some growing pains therewith Sheldon Rankins, Chris Jenkins, McKinley
Jackson and DJ Reader not here. There might be some growing pains there.
But if you're able to limit someof the damage through the air, that
opens up a lot of different waysthis defense can go and help this offense,

(01:50:40):
help the team as a whole getback to where they're expected to be.
We'll take a break, we'll beback sinty three to sixty ESPN fifteen
thirty. Except what's going on inbaseball? Getting ESPN fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.
I missfoot ball so much Earlier today, I watched the entire Week one,

(01:51:03):
twenty nineteen game between the Bengals andthe Seahawks, Zach Taylor's first career
game as Bengals head coach. NowI'm watching twenty twenty one Week eleven Bengals
Steelers. Bengals beat him forty oneto ten. I missed football eighty days
away from Bengals football right here onESPN fifteen thirty. I lost to know

(01:51:25):
more This is since e three tosixty a couple pieces of NFL news,
Adam Schefter reporting Cleveland Brown's defensive endLonnie Phelps, who I don't know who
that is. He was charged withdrunken driving Wednesday night and he crashed his
SUV into a Florida restaurant. Sogood job, Lonnie. H. I

(01:51:45):
think I don't know this to betrue. I know our friends to the
north in Dayton, where I grewup, in the Miami Valley as they
call it, that has to leadthe world per capita in cars into vehicles,
our vehicles into buildings. I don'tknow. If you turn on any
of the local news stations in theDayton area every night, there is like

(01:52:11):
two cars that ran into a building. I've never been able to understand it.
It's just something that has to behappening in the Miami Valley, in
the Miami Valley alone, except forLonnie Phelps here who was drunk and drove
into a restaurant. In the Daytonarea, they have to lead the world
per capita in vehicles into buildings. It is completely inexplicable. And these are

(01:52:34):
the things that I think about lateat night. Last Bengals Update of the
Day. Tight End University is happeningright now. It's that big thing that
George Kittle and others put on everyyear where all the tight ends gather.
I don't know why I said itlike that. Titans, all the tight
Ends gather for a big camp everyyear in between OTAs and training Camp.

(01:52:55):
Two Bengals are present. Drew Sampleand Tanner Hudson at TEU with George Kittle
and company. Bryson Deshambo stopped bythere yesterday with the US Open trophy.
That was kind of cool. Whatelse is kind of cool is Chad Brindle.
Chad is going to stop by.He's in for mo this afternoon from

(01:53:15):
three to six, and we'll talkto Chad when we come back. For
Quick Hits and Locks of the Night. You're listening to Cincy three sixty hour
three, brought to you by CincyShirts on the Home of the Bengals,
ESPN fifteen thirty, ESPN fifth onESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
It's time for Cincy three sixty QuickHits on ESPN fifteen thirty. Yes,

(01:53:40):
indeed, it is welcome in too. Quick Hits and Locks the Night.
Austin Elmore Sincy three sixty and apleasure to be joined now by our good
friend Chad Brindle. Hi Chad,Hey buddy, how's it going good?
How are you voices on the mend? It's look all the way back tow
one hundred percent? Yeah, allright, I think I can still manage

(01:54:00):
radio. I think you can.Now you're in the big chair this afternoon.
What's going to be on your show? So? I was going to
talk similarly about a lot of whatyou've discussed today, and I called an
audible. Oh you were all killkill kill. So you're talking a lot
about this, this this timeline ofdevelopment and winning now, and it got

(01:54:24):
my brain kind of moving. Sure, are you comfortable trusting them to develop
offensive players, because Audie, Idon't know if you notice or not,
but they have been pretty bad atit. Yes, very very bad at
it, if we're being quite honest. You had Jesse Winker developed pretty nicely

(01:54:48):
as a Reds prospect, a HainioSuarez who they got in a trade.
But do you know he only madeone All Star game. That surprised me.
He hit like fifty homers that onetime. Yeah, I guess he
was a guy that tended to startslow and then heat up as the summer
went on, which is not greatfor the Midsummer Classic. But Adam Duval

(01:55:11):
made an All Star Game as arental kind of a not a Renolds More.
He was more of like a journeyman. I guess would be a good
word for him. Nick Castianos madean All Star Game. But for all
the prospects that have come up inthis franchise over the past decade, very
few have been homegrown, and theones that are homegrown have not developed.

(01:55:34):
And you look at like a JonathanIndiana Tyler Stevenson, who great rookie seasons.
Stevenson is finally starting to realize someof that potential again this year,
but India has not developed the waythat anybody thought he would coming off a
Rookie of the Year. Are wereally truly comfortable trusting that all of these

(01:56:00):
young, talented offensive players are goingto develop in this system, because far
more often than not, it hasn'thappened in Austin And that's that's got to
be a concern. And I thinkto your point as well, is in
a lot of cases those guys havegone on to leave this organization and have

(01:56:24):
good offensive careers. Some you know, some of them have continued. Adam
Duvall is one of those who's beenvery good in Atlanta. I mean,
Jesse Winker even to an extent,is fantastic right now for the Washington Nationals.
Had a big home run for them. Uh So, yeah, that's
that is an interesting way of lookingat things. Do you have any guests
lined up for today? I do, Klay Snowdens just baseball score. Snow

(01:56:47):
Clay is going to come on andtalk some Reds with us. Richard Skinner.
We'll talk a little Bengals. We'lltalk a little Reds. I've got
an interesting Bengals question that maybe you'reyou're ready for. I'll listen to it.
Is this offense ready to be atop five offense? It has not
been a top five offense under JoeBurrow. I think the highest they have

(01:57:08):
reached is eighth. Everything should bein place right, T and Jamar are
back. You've got a pass catchingtight end you think should be pretty good,
a renewed talent level in the rungame, the offensive line is intact,
Joe is healthy at this point. Is this offense finally ready to take

(01:57:31):
that leap? And be an eliteoffense in the NFL. I think it's
been a good to very good offensewith Joe Burrow at the helm. Are
they ready to be elite? Becausewhat have we talked about? The defense
was thirty first last year. Expectingthem to jump all the way near the
top ten is a lot to ask. That means in the regular season,

(01:57:54):
the offense is going to have todo some of the carrying and we have
not seen a lot of that inthe Joe Burrow era. I wonder what
you would what would you say theirbiggest weakness on offenses right now? The
run game is still pretty unknown becauseyou have a new lead back, you
know, with with mixing good batterindifferent. We kind of knew what the

(01:58:15):
run game was going to look likewith Joe back there. What is it
going to look like now with withnew faces carrying the heavy load? All
right? Wonderful? Uh? Haveyou ever seen anything like? Also?
Uh, Jake Thlen, Jake Feelingis going to join us today, former
UC assistant now head coach at CovingtonCatholic High School. That's right? Any
relation to Adam Feeling? No,Okay, is Jake Diebler going to be

(01:58:39):
on the show. No, okay, I mean I do think you have
to ask him, like, youknow, as far as basketball coaches named
Jake, does he fit right?Yea Diebler right now? Probably at the
top? Get there. Deebler hasn'twon a game as the full time head
coach. Well, I mean, but you know what he did at the
end of the year last year especiallyspecial. Are you gonna talk about the

(01:59:00):
Bearcats at all? I don't haveany uc specific It feels like they're having
a good offseason football wise with futurerecruiting. Yea four stars they did,
they get a five, they didn'tget a five. Now they don't get
five two fourth, Yeah, overthe past week, so that's good.
Recruiting is picking up and they're doinga good job identifying. And when does
Camp Higher Ground begin? I thinkthey are allowed to start August third.

(01:59:25):
You get thirty days from your opener. That feels like short time. Your
thirty days. That's every school inthe country. You take your opener,
you date back thirty days, andthat's when you're allowed to start camping.
So for the Bearcats, I thinkthat's August third. All right, wonderful.
Let's get to Locks of the Night. Hey, degenerates. It's time
for Lots of the Night presented byCincy's Shirts. Visit the stores in Hyde

(01:59:47):
Park, Loveland, or on DixieHighway in Fort Mitchell and always online at
Sincy shirts dot com. Now let'smake you some money, now, Chad,
you told me you were very excitedto tell me about the lock that
you had for tonight. What doyou and you typically don't do this,
So what is your luck to night. I'm gonna go reds under. Well,
they don't play tonight, I know. Oh, okay, still going

(02:00:08):
under. So you've got the offday, the off day under, the
off day under. I'll take offday money line. It's set it zero
and I'm going under. It's likethose uh they always talking about how you
know you take the when the Bengalssucked, you used to say that they
lost to the bye week or whateverit. Right, Yeah, that's that
makes a lot of sense. I'mgoing under. All right? Do you

(02:00:30):
have in this Bengals Titans game?Bengals comfortably? This is from twenty twenty,
I believe. Yeah, this wasone of the good wins of twenty
twenty. The Bengals beat up onthe Titans in this game, I was
at this game. I was workingthis game. Special game. Anyways,
I miss football so much. I'mjust watching it all old games. Take
the Bengals lay the points. Yes, take the Bengals lay the points.
They were heavy dogs in this game. What do I got. I'm gonna

double up same thing I did yesterday? Yankees Orioles. Yes, I went
one and one, but you wouldhave made money because the Orioles were underdogs.
They're dogs again. I'm gonna takethem to beat the Yankees plus one
thirty four tonight, and I'm gonnatake the rookie phenom Luis heel over six
and a half strikeouts against those Orioles. Chad, thank you, thank you.

(02:01:18):
I'm gonna I'm gonna see if Ican get through three hours. I'm
gonna see if you can as well. Maybe are you here? I'll be
down the hall. Okay, ifI need to call to the bullpen,
well, then you would have torun the Eddie and Rocky show. How
hard can that be? You'd besurprised. Make it a little harder than
it needs to be at times. That is Chad Brindle, He's in form.
