Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is Skyline Chile. Since he three to sixty about Cincinnati
from Cincinnati, sponsored in part by Skyline Chile. Stop by
Skyline Chile for a three way or cheeze Cony today.
Feeling good, It's Skyline time. This is ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Hi, Hello and welcome in Cincy three sixty. ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Hi, my name is Austin Elmore.
With you for the next three hours a Friday edition
of Cincy three sixty. Fired up to be here and
fired up that it's Friday. Tone is not here today.

(00:42):
Tone was originally supposed to work, but he's got a
lot of off the field stuff going on right now
and he needed to attend to that and some family stuff.
So Tone is out today and he's out all of
next week for his regularly scheduled July load management vacation.
Tone's gonna go down to the beach. I hope he
gets a little bit of our and our relaxation and

(01:05):
comes back ready to hit the ground running for football
season and Bengals training camp. And I'm sure that he will.
So get used to the sound of my voice. It's
me and you for the next six straight shows, maybe
seven straight shows of Sincy three to sixty. I'll have
to double check the calendar, but I'm excited about it.

(01:25):
Always love the chance to do the show on my own,
put a little bit of a spin on it, my
own spin on it, and just kind of do it
and give it a bit of a refresher and a
switch up, and just do things a little bit differently
here and there. So looking forward to that. I'm glad
it's Friday. I had a rough week. I know Tony
had a rough week. It's been a rough week for
a lot of us. It is the doldrums, the dog
days of summer for us in this business. But I'm

(01:48):
not looking for your sympathy. We're not looking for your sympathy.
Everybody has jobs and frustrations and moments that they go
through them, and how about we just enjoy the fact
that it's Friday. We got a weekend coming up. The
Reds are two games over five hundred, The All Star
Break is coming up next week, home run derby All

(02:09):
Star Game, couple of Reds well represented. There's a lot
to be excited about, and the clock just keeps on
ticking towards Bengals training camp. You heard Tony and Moe
yesterday during quick Hits make the announcement and in case
you missed it, they will be doing ten Tony and
Moe training camp shows live from the practice fields adjacent

(02:32):
to pay Course Stadium. Those I believe will go from
ten to noon. I don't really know, nobody has told
me anything about them, but I hope that you are
excited for those, because I know we certainly are excited
to have those and enhance our training camp coverage for
the Bengals. It certainly has been a long time coming

(02:54):
and looking forward to seeing how that plays out and
what we actually do. So that's coming up in the
next couple of weeks. It's the very very quiet downtime
in the National Football League. I said this with Tony
the other day. It's officially ranking season, which means everybody
ranks their players and everybody reacts to them. This is

(03:14):
what you do for the two weeks before training camp.
Some call it Mount Rushmore Season because then you start
doing Mount Rushmore's of this and Mount Rushmore's of that,
and blah blah blah blah blah. So it is that
time of year and you might notice by the way
I'm doing this segment, I don't know that there's all
that much to talk about in terms of football, but
we do have our Revivefitnesssystems dot Com poll question presented

(03:39):
by coach PJ. Street and Revivefitnessystems dot Com. Which Bengals
position group, as currently constructed do you have more faith in?
Right now? Offensive line? And we've outlined extensively what the
offensive line looks like and might be in be perhaps

(04:00):
for the Bengals coming up this year. Or defensive line
keyword there is as currently con constructed. Excuse me, as
currently constructed. That means Shamar Stewart is not under contract.
So if you take Shamar Stewart out of the equation

(04:22):
as currently constructed, which position group do you have more
faith in? We'll talk a little bit about that in
our number three. Here's how the show's gonna go today,
same lineup as normal. Charlie Goldsmith at one o'clock. We'll
talk to him about the Reds win last night, a
little bit about Andrew Abbott being an All Star. Last

(04:43):
I talked to Charlie. I think he's going to Atlanta
for the All Star Game, so I'll ask him about
that as well. And at two o'clock, Tommy g the
Voice of the Orange and Blue, the Voice of FC Cincinnati,
is going to stop by Big One, Big One at
the stadium at the West End TQL Stadium this weekend.
Hell is real. FC Cincinnati hosting Columbus. It's gonna be

(05:05):
a wet one, it appears, but it should be a
good game as the Orange and Blue come in in
the midst of some of their best games, their best
game play, their best performances of the season. They are
certainly playing good soccer at the moment. Looking forward to
talking to Tommy about that. By the way, end of
our number two, we are gonna do talkbacks at the

(05:27):
same normal time. We're gonna give away a SINCI shirts
gift cards for talkback of the week. Gonna give away
two more tickets for upper deck golf coming up next
weekend at Great American Ballpark. Looking forward to doing that
as well. You are gonna hear from Pat Noonan coming
up later in this hour as he previews the match
coming up with Columbus. Looking forward to that. But the

(05:50):
big news is obviously the Reds. The Reds were able
to avoid the sweep two nights ago. We're able to
get the split last night thanks in no small part
to Nick Lodolo and what he was able to do.
You know, I kind of crack on Lodolo at times,
but the guy turns in another quality start and he's

(06:11):
kind of just done that all season long, and he
deserves a lot of credit for that. Red's wins six
nothing last night. Lodolo now with a three point three
to eight earned run average. He went six innings, gave
up just three hits, no earned runs, struck out four
in what was a pretty solid performance, and everybody kind

(06:32):
of held their breath for a moment because early in
that game Lodolo had to take pause and like look
down at his finger, and he's had a bunch of
blister issues in the past, but whatever it was, it
seems like they were able to work through that and
Lodolo performed well after that. Red's got the scoring started
early in the game. Again. They are one of the

(06:53):
best teams, if not the best team in baseball at scoring.
In the first inning, Austin Hayes had an RBI single
in the first to put the Reds up one nothing,
and then Spencer Steer added a solo homer as well
in the bottom of the second inning, and Ellie de
la Cruz continues to perform. He had another two hit day,

(07:15):
scored two runs, had an RBI. Ellie stole a base
two by the way, that doesn't happen very much anymore,
just his twenty third steal of the season. Maybe that's
a sign of things to come. Actually, it reminds me
of something we're gonna get into coming up in the
next segment. I'm gonna experiment with some segment ideas for

(07:37):
Sincy three sixty. One of them is and if you
heard me on Sunday Morning Sports talk, I did this
on seven hundred WLW a question, a comment, and a
concern about the Reds now. I'm going to invite you
on talkbacks to leave me one of the three either
a question, a comment, or a concern about the Reds

(08:02):
as we approach the All Star break. This is the
final series with Colorado ahead of the All Star Break.
I want your questions, your comments, and your concerns about
this team. I'm gonna get into it a little bit
coming up in the second segment about my concerns and
I'll give you a hint right now, Ellie de la

(08:22):
Cruz on the base paths is one of those three topics.
We'll talk about it coming up in the next segment altogether,
though Red's win six nothing a shutout. When nine hits
all together for Cincinnati and they get set to welcome
in the Colorado Rockies tonight, it'll be Chase Burns on

(08:42):
the mound for Cincinnati. Chase already making his fourth major
league start. Kind of hard to believe, and I would
imagine he goes into tonight with a bit of a
relaxed feeling, maybe a little bit more confidence because he's
not facing the Yankees, he's not facing the Red Sox,
he's not facing the Philadelphia Phillies. He's facing the Colorado Rockies.

(09:08):
The right hander going for the Rockies today will be
Jerman Marquez. Apologies if I set his name incorrectly. He
is making his nineteenth start of the season tonight. He's
pitched just eighty nine innings so far this season, with
sixty three strikeouts. He has an ERA of five point
eight four on the season. His last time out, July fifth,

(09:32):
he faced the White Sox. He went six innings, gave
up eleven hits and six earned runs. In those six
innings against the Chicago White Sox. Prior to that, he
pitched against the Brewers and Milwaukee pitched a lot better
five and two thirds. Gave up just two earned runs,
so he is not pitched great as of late. Gave
up six to the Dodgers, two to the Brewers, and

(09:54):
six to the White Sox. Hopefully the Reds can continue
that trend for Hermann Marquez, and maybe I should start
looking up how to pronounce people's names before just reading
it off of a computer screen. Either way, the Reds
have seen him before.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
T J.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Friedel Is homered off of him twice in his career
twice in his career, a couple of rbi done that
in just three at bats against him. Gavin Lux has
seen him fifteen times. They're, of course, familiar with each
other from Lux's time with the Dodgers. In those fifteen
at bats, Lux has just one RBI and is hitting
two sixty seven against him, with a handful of extra

(10:31):
base hits in there. Spencer Steer is zero for three
against him in his career, and Jose Travino is two
for four against Marquez in his career. Of course, the
Rockies have never seen young Chase Burns. Burns enters the
game tonight again his fourth start with an eight point
one EERA. He's pitched just ten big league innings, has
fifteen strikeouts in those big league innings, and has a

(10:53):
whip as Moe mentioned yesterday, whip walks hits innings pitched
of one point nine's zero for the young right hander.
My buddy was saying today that his lock, I know
we don't do locks of the night anymore, but his
lock is that the uh, the young man Chase Burns

(11:14):
will have double digit strikeouts tonight against the Colorado Rockies.
They strike out a lot. He's pretty good. I don't
know if I dislike that bet. Sounds like a bet
that makes a lot of sense to me. Taking a
quick look at the standings, what happened last night? Well,
the Reds won, but so tooted Saint Louis. Milwaukee's won
four in a row. The Cubs won. The Reds currently

(11:36):
sit seven and a half games back of the Cubs
in the National League Central Cincinnati three games back of
the wild card race. San Diego is the first team out.
They're half a game behind San Francisco. Saint Louis is
a game behind San Francisco and then the Reds. The
Reds are currently two games clear of Arizona. Arizona is

(11:58):
forty six and four. They are five games back in
the wild Card and the Reds are just three. As
far as the schedule is concerned, we can get into
that a little bit as well. Who is playing who
this weekend in Major League Baseball? Well, the Cubs no
easy task for them. They've got to go to New
York to take on the Yankees and they're going to

(12:20):
be facing left hander Carlos Rodon tonight in that series.
Over the weekend, Pirates are in Minnesota to take on
the Twins. The Brewers are hosting the Nationals. The Brewers
are hotter than the surface of the sun right now,
and here come the Nationals. That's not great. Braves are
playing the Cardinals in Saint Louis. Atlanta is flailing. They

(12:43):
are twelve games under five hundred and they cannot score.
That's not good for the Reds because the Cardinals need
to lose. Meanwhile, Arizona is in LA to take on
the Angels. That is a night game tonight. Both those
teams just a couple of games under five five hundred.
Philadelphia is in San Diego for a weekend set with

(13:03):
the Padres, so that should be some entertaining baseball right there.
Dodgers and Giants at Oracle Park tonight in San Francisco.
The Giants a slogan web will will be on the
mound in that game. There's a double header today as well.
Guardian's White Sox rained out last night, so that is that, okay.
I think you know everything baseball wise. I think you

(13:25):
I think you're fully up to date about what to
expect from a baseball standpoint. But I want to open
up the phone lines to you five one three seven
four nine fifteen thirty. They're going to be open the
entire show five one three seven four nine fifteen thirty.
Go vote on the poll. Question tweeted me at Audio
more A U T y E L M O R E.
Just getting you set for the weekend with everything going on.

(13:50):
I have a question, a comment, and a concern about
the Reds as we approach the All Star break. By
the way, did you know the Draft is on Sunday?
I didn't know that. I always lose side of the
draft and then they've moved it around and the Reds
have the ninth overall pick. There was a mock draft

(14:10):
that had them taking a right fielder out of Auburn,
but in the explanation, the writer was just like, Oh,
I don't know who they're gonna pick. If these two
guys aren't there, they might take this guy, which I
think is a perfect indication of how people feel about
the Major League Baseball Draft. It's like nobody really knows. Okay,
they drafted this guy, here's what he did, here's where

(14:31):
he comes from. We'll hopefully see him in a year,
like the Reds have done with the last couple of guys,
but maybe not. I would expect them to go with
an outfielder. I guess that just makes sense to go
with an outfielder. But I don't understand the baseball I
think I understand Major League Baseball and the draft. They're

(14:53):
less than I do the NBA draft, and I find
the NBA draft to be completely confusing. Anyways, phone lines,
open questions, comments, concerns on the twenty twenty five Reds
as we approached the final series prior to the All
Star break, That's what we got on the show today.
Austin Omore riding solo our one of Sincy three to sixty,

(15:14):
brought to you by our great friends at Skyline Chili.
Whenever you're feeling good and hungry, it's Skyline time. Take
a break. We'll come back. This is Sincy three sixty ESPN.
Fifteen thirty.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
Now you written it's Steers.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
He drives it high, very deep and very gone to last.

Speaker 5 (15:38):
Way out of here and no doubt her for Steers
eleventh poem run of the year too nothing red fastball
up and in on the first pitch, potfull came back
in there. This time he left it down and he
got hurt.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
That's our call today. Yesterday Tommy Thrall, Jeff Brantley as
Spencer Steer Spencer. The long balls went deep again yesterday
for the Red Legs, part of their early inning success.
Once again a second inning homer, that time from Steer.
Reds would go on to win the game six nothing

(16:14):
against the Miami Marlins, shifting towards the Rockies tonight. I
talked about a question, a comment and a concern that
you have and ones that I have for the Reds
as we go into this final weekend series. I put
the question out on Twitter at audiomore if you want
to be a part of it if you want to
respond to it. And I got a lot of good responses,

(16:36):
and there's one. There's one that's just making me uncomfortable.
Our guy Cincinnatus weighed in. He says, if McLain Cees, Marte,
Benson and Steer keep playing the way they have been,
which is up and down, we don't really have a
young core, do we. Does that mean we have another

(16:57):
rebuild coming? Hmmm. I don't like the way that sounds.
I don't like the way that makes me feel inside.
I wouldn't hope, I mean, I wouldn't think that there's
gonna be another rebuild coming. I would hope that the
Reds look around and say, all right, we got Ellie
day La Cruz. He's represented by Scott Boris Hunter Green's

(17:18):
contract ends at the same time, Let's maybe try to
get something out of this. You would hope that's the
way that they think. The Reds have proven that you
can't really trust them to think logically with the way
the team building happens, which actually leads us to our caller,
Randy in Madeira, who has a Reds question, what's up? Randy?

Speaker 6 (17:41):
All live in the Dream it's Friday. We made it.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
That's right, brother.

Speaker 6 (17:45):
My question, what does it say.

Speaker 7 (17:47):
About the Reds organization as a whole that in widely
renowned great American small part, we don't have a top
twenty home run.

Speaker 8 (17:56):
Heavy Yeah, and it's.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Been like that forever. It feels like not since done
and Griffy and I mean Schebler had thirty and Suarez
had fifty a few years ago. But like, it's one
of the most confusing parts about the way that they've
modeled the team the last several years is that they
almost model a team to like slap the ball around
and go crazy on the bass pass and lay down

(18:20):
bunt hits and try to move runners over it. They
don't really go after guys or haven't been able to
develop guys that actually hit the ball out of the ballpark.

Speaker 7 (18:30):
Amen. That being said, it's exciting when they do steered in.
It only does it again excited for the second half.
I think there's a lot of potential.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yeah, I'm right there with you and Randy, thank you
for the phone call. You're right, Like power has been
a major issue. We talked about it all offseason, Like
everybody knows the team needs power and Austin Hayes. Maybe
if he was healthy the entire year, he'd be one
of those guys, but he hasn't been healthy the entire year.
It's one of the most infusing parts of the way

(19:02):
the Reds have chosen to build themselves over the last
several years, even to the point where I don't know
if I ever said this on the air, but my crazy,
ridiculous idea is, if you're not going to and I
know this is just bear with me, all right, this
is a stupid take, maybe, but if you're not going
to build your team around the dimensions of the ballpark

(19:26):
in which you play eighty one games, why not change
the dimensions of the ballpark. It's called great American small park,
as Randy said, A launching pad, a band box, that's
all the things that the stadium is referred to. I mean, hell,
we heard pitchers last week complain about how the mound
feels flat, which makes it feel like for them even

(19:47):
harder to pitch. Well, if that's the case, why don't
you open it up a little bit. I mean, we've
seen teams, multiple teams change the dimensions of their stadiums
in the past. San Diego has done it, The Mets
have done it, the Orioles have done I mean, I
know that that's not an easy thing to do. Certainly
is not an easy thing to do, and it's not inexpensive.

(20:07):
I understand that. But if you're building the team and
you're not building it in the image of the ballpark,
you're working against yourself, aren't you. It's like if the
Reds played in Oracle Park eighty one games, I like
their odds, eli'd probably lead the league in triples. If
they played in k America Park, they would seemingly make

(20:29):
a lot more sense. And you saw the way they
played when they were in America in Detroit a couple
of weeks ago. That I think is a fair criticism
about them. And I don't understand why they can't get
more free agent power hitters to want to come here
and play. That has always been mind boggling to me

(20:50):
as well. We'll get to some of your more more
of your questions, comments and concerns on Twitter. There's been
a lot of them. Keep them coming. You can go
chime in that way. Here's my question about the twenty
twenty five Reds. All right, we'll do question, comment, concern, question,
as we move towards the second half or the post

(21:11):
All Star break side of things and the trade deadline,
are the Reds willing and able to move on from
might Bees in order to get certainties? Think of the
conversation we had yesterday was the Stephen Kuan trade idea
now labeled by ESPN as the quote unquote perfect trade

(21:34):
for each team. Perfection is hard to find. It would
make a lot of sense for the Reds. It would
cost a lot for the Reds. How many times have
we said, hmm, I don't want to give up prospects
because of what they could be when they get to
the majors. Well, think back to that tweet from Cincinnatus
that I just read. Yeah, I think you've you've You're

(21:56):
still pretty sure on McClain, right, Like he's a guy
most people would say, Okay, I'm a little bit concerned
about the way he's performed this year, but he still
has a lot of inexperienced and he'll get better. Cees
has been a bit of a dud. Benson has had moments,
but a bit of a dud. Marte can't throw the
ball to first base. Although I think people are still

(22:18):
high on him, Steer I think doesn't really apply to
this because I think he is a good major league
player and will be a really good major league player.
That's my opinion. But like, would the organization be better
off if they had traded Ces? This is just an example, right,

(22:38):
Like the Minnesota Twins traded Ces. They've been to the playoffs.
They traded Steer, They've been to the playoffs. The point is,
at some point you have to quit talking about what
guys might end up being and what and go after
guys that you know what they are, because how many

(23:00):
times have we seen dudes get called up to the
big leagues. And this isn't just a Reds thing, this
is across baseball. Dudes get called up to the big
leagues and they don't end up being anything like what
you needed them to be. Jesse Winker, Spencer Steer or
Nixon's out now, Winker made an All Star team and
I wish you would have stuck around. I think the
Reds screwed up and moving on from Jesse Winker. But guys,

(23:23):
it's like, okay, well good enough to move on from
didn't be or didn't excel or didn't exceed the expectations
that you had for them, because the big league baseball
is hard, and there are enough other teams across baseball
who are always looking for prospects. Everybody's always looking for prospects,
for what ifs, for what might be. Like the Reds

(23:46):
moved on from Jose Siri and he's been in the
big leagues, he's been okay, but he was a highly
thought of prospect. Moved on from him, Like, can you
can the Reds commit to doing that? Because of what
he just said, Ellie's contract coming up. I understand, we
talked extensively. I don't want to talk about the contract

(24:08):
coming up and just enjoy Ellie while he's here. Okay,
I hear you. But part of the enjoyment is that
the organization does everything they can to make it worthwhile
to surround him with all the pieces he needs. They
didn't entirely do this with Joey Vado, They didn't entirely

(24:30):
do this with Ken Griffey Jr. They haven't done this
in the past. So will the organization look around And
I don't know, Sammy Steffura or Edwin Arroyo or maybe
Cam Callier say all right, we like what these guys
could be but let's go get a certainty in Stephen
Kwan or let's go get a certainty And I don't
know Brent Rooker somebody like that. I don't know. I

(24:52):
don't know the pool of people enough, but I would
like to at some point feel like the Reds are like, yeah,
we got to make the most of this. And why
I have a little bit of faith is because of
the moves they've already made. We talked about this extensively,
moving on from Jamber Candelario calling up Chase Burns. The

(25:12):
message that's sent to the clubhouse even hell, the hiring
of Francona in and of itself, was like we're trying
to win now, Okay, great, I need you to do
more because those moves, while they are a step in
the right direction, are not enough. Right, you still have
to take the next step. You still have to keep going.

(25:36):
You have to put your money where your mouth is.
That's a huge test for this team because when push
comes to shove in the past, they haven't done it.
They're like Hall of Fame level organization when it comes
to kicking the tires and checking a guy and seeing
if maybe he might be available, but not quite getting

(25:57):
a deal done, at what point do you go for it.
I've said this in the past. You know, I understand
things maybe didn't end well with Dick Williams, and while
the organization didn't really get to where they wanted to,
and COVID maybe knocked that off the rails. I got
no beef with Dick Williams. That dude tried like hell
to build a winner, and he wasn't afraid to spend money,
and he got Bob Castelini and others to sign off

(26:19):
on this vision that he had for the team. I
wasn't successful ultimately, No, but I got no problem with
you swinging. And that's what I hope Nick Crawl will
shift into as this season goes along. My comment and
my concern. Next. Since E three to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty,
Hey Alexa, what's going on in the NFL?

Speaker 9 (26:40):
Getting ESPN is fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
I want a sneak peek at this year's Since.

Speaker 9 (26:45):
PN fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
Welcome back, Since E three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm
Austin Elmore, your host today and for the next week
or so on this show coming up twenty five minutes
from right now Charlie Goldsmith on the Reds and getting
set for All Star Week coming up next week at
two o'clock Tommy g the Voice of the Orange and

(27:12):
Blue hell is Reo coming up this weekend and looking
forward to Tommy's breakdown of that game. I just outlined
question my question for the Reds among questions, comments, and
concerns as we move into the second half of the season.
I asked for some of yours as well and have

(27:34):
gotten some good responses. Ryan says his concerns are starting pitching,
health holding up because they're thin, the inconsistency of the offense,
the shelf life of the bullpen. He did say that
they're resilient. They win as a team. They don't have
long stretches of losing, but they can't have long stretches
of winning either. They are one good two week stretch

(27:58):
of being in the thick of it. That's a good
summation of it from Ryan. He also says that the
schedule from the All Star break on is unforgiving a
lot of decent to good teams, with the rest of
the way will require the best ball of the season
to stay afloat will have to overachieve to make the playoffs.
They need outside help. Jeff chimes in. Jeff Virginia said

(28:19):
the West Coast trips in August and September are a
concern and their ability to beat the Brewers will determine
the season. Gosh, the Brewers again. Man, the Brewers are
so good it's so annoying. They're one of those teams
I'm always referring to that seems like they do more
with less. They just find a way, and they are

(28:39):
unbelievably consistent. Yes, they have a superstar in Christian Yelich,
but he's not been the same guy since he hurt
his knee a few years ago. But they've surrounded him
with other good guys. They've supplemented him with guys like
Rhee Hoskins. They've drafted and developed somebody like Jackson Surio.
I don't know if they drafted him, but they've signed
him and developed Jackson Curio like that sort of thing.

(29:02):
A lot of responses say consistency on offense. The Space
Cowboy weighs in. He says, for the most part, they
are who we thought they were. Season hinges on if
the front office is willing to get help. We'll be
checking in on your questions, comments and concerns as the
show goes on. By the way, go check out the
Revivefitnessystems dot com poll question available at audiell More and

(29:23):
at ESPN fifteen thirty as well. We'll get into that
a little bit later on when we talk Bengals. Okay,
here's my comment. Ellie de Lacruz needs to steal more bases.
He stole yesterday. That was just his twenty third steal
of the season. It was the first time he's attempted

(29:44):
to stolen base since June twenty seventh. These are the
last four games that Ellie has stolen a base June tenth,
June seventeenth, June twenty seventh, and yesterday. That's a week
to ten days in between steals steals for Ellie and
he's really not even attempting them either. Why is that happening?

(30:06):
Like we've discussed this a little bit, because it just
in general, they run less, they put less pressure on
the defense. I wonder if this series against Colorado could
be one where the Reds take the gloves off and
they go right after it. The plan that they had
yesterday worked well. I don't know if you've seen it,

(30:28):
but just go to Twitter and search Rockies and look
at their play from last night. They're throwing the ball
all over the infield, kind of like the Red Sox
did against the Reds a week or two ago. This
team is like they're awful. The Rockies are awful. Is
this the time Colorado was twenty one and seventy two?
Is this the time to kind of unleash the running

(30:50):
game put pressure on the defense? They have to get
better at that. Again, the way the team was built,
there's speed there. Freedo hasn't stolen as much as I
would like, and you know, I understand that maybe he's
not the guy he used to be. Speed wise, Steer
is starting to trend in the right direction. Can we

(31:13):
get more stolen bases from this team? Because I think
they're better when they're aggressive on the base pass and
when they're putting pressure on the defense, And it certainly
helps when you have a guy in scoring position with
two outs when you're trying to get a rally started.
Like it seems like that's basically the only time they've

(31:36):
stolen this year is runner on scoring position or runner
runner on first two outs. That's the most obvious steal
situation in baseball. I get it. I would have to
situationally see the percentage, but that's almost exclusively when they steal.
And Ellie specifically, I know he was a little bit

(31:56):
banged up with the leg injury earlier this year, but
Ellie specifically, I want to see more from him. I
want to see him change and alter the game a
little bit more, especially if there's inconsistencies behind him. You
might feel alright with Hayes and Steer, but can those
guys perform a little bit better if Ellie's standing on

(32:20):
second base, and you make the point of if those
dudes are hitting for extra bases, Ellie's on first, he's
in scoring position. I get it, But again, I want
to put pressure on the defense. I want to cause chaos.
I want to see what he can do. We've seen
him cause chaos by taking second base and then there's
an Aaron throw, and then he gets to third, and
then he scores on a shallow pop up to right field.

(32:43):
That sort of stuff that can generate offense. And I
understand offense is not the biggest issue for the team
right now, but it is inconsistent and a concern moving forward,
wouldn't you say so? My comment is, Ellie de la
Cruz needs to steal more bases, and Mike concern, Well,
my concern goes back to a guy I just mentioned,

(33:04):
TJ Friedel. I'm not worried worried about TJ Friedel, but
I'm not not worried about Freedel. Over his last fifteen games,
TJ has fifty five at bats and eleven hits. That's
good for a two hundred batting average. He has eleven hits,

(33:26):
but in those fifty five at bats, he has twelve strikeouts.
He has just one RBI, he has walked six times.
He has not stolen a base in the last two
weeks worth of games. Fredo slash line is a two hundred,
two ninety and two thirty six two two two. Not good, Ernie.

(33:53):
If you open it up to even further. Last thirty
games for Freedl his batting average is two thirty two,
with an on base percentage of three to twenty six
and a slugging percentage of three forty eight. TJ has
been pretty consistent this year and at times has carried

(34:14):
this team. And I don't expect him to play at
an elite level all season long. I don't expect that
from anyone. That's how baseball goes. It's ups and downs,
it's ebbs and flows. But when you look at TJ's
history of injuries and his history over the course of
his career. In twenty twenty one, his debut season in

(34:35):
the big leagues, he played in just fourteen games, came
up late. In twenty twenty two, he played in just
seventy two games. In twenty twenty three, he played in
one hundred and thirty eight games, missed over twenty games
in twenty twenty four. Last year, he played in only
eighty five games. In this year, he's already played in nine.

(35:02):
When you look at his injury history, in twenty twenty two,
he had a hamstring injury, in twenty twenty three, he
had an oblique and a hamstring injury. Last season he
had a wrist and thumb injury and a hamstring injury,
And this year already had a slight wrist injury that
didn't affect him too much, but it is logged as

(35:24):
an injury from this year. With the way that he plays,
with the amount that he has played with his style
of play. I am slightly concerned about TJ. Friedel and
the fatigue and potentially wearing down. I don't think that
it's a major issue. I don't think that it's a

(35:46):
major concern. I don't stay up at night thinking about it,
but I do wonder is there something to that? And
what would the plan be to help TJ a little bit?
Is it to take him out of center field? Is
it to give Will Benson a couple of starts over there?

(36:09):
How exactly do you manage that? And where does this
team go if Freedol isn't who he was for most
of this season in his career, He's a two to
sixty one hitter right now. He's hitting two seventy eight
this season. Let's say he finishes the year at two

(36:32):
sixty five split the difference. Okay, it's not quite the
production level we've seen so far this year, but still
manageable and above his career average. Can they afford that?
I mean at all? Certainly hinges on what they do
at the trade deadline, But how do you supplement maybe

(36:54):
a TJ. Friedel that doesn't play at the level he
played at early in the year. That's a concern, right,
And that's just one of the the a thing I'm
keeping tabs on because of his injury history, because of
maybe the fatigue with a lot going on and a

(37:14):
lot having been required of him so far this season.
Is TJ Friedel going to struggle in the second half?
Hope not. Don't know that I'd bank on it, but
it's a concern that I'm earmarking for the Reds moving forward.
That's my question, that's my comment, that's my concern. I

(37:35):
want to continue to hear from you on Twitter at

Charlie Goldsmith more on the Reds and on the All
Star Week coming up, Tommy g later on here from

(37:58):
Pat Noonan when we come back. Pat met with the
media earlier this week. He talked about the Hell is
Real Derby. You'll hear from the gaffer, Pat noonon we
come back. This is Cincy three to sixty, ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 10 (38:11):
Why ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
Welcome back Cincy, three to sixty on ESPN fifteen thirty
Austin Elmore with you coming up tomorrow. The hell is
real derby FC Cincinnati playing host to Columbus, a team
that they went on the road and got a point
from earlier this year, and this is a big match
for FC Cincinnati, trying to continue the winning ways. We'll

(38:42):
talk to Tommy g about it a little bit later on,
but yesterday the head coach, the gaffer, the skipper, the manager,
Pat Noonan met with the media and was asked, do
you have a little bit more juice for a game
like this?

Speaker 4 (38:55):
There's more awareness of what the game means.

Speaker 11 (38:58):
I wouldn't call it more juice because I think our
guys train hard every day with.

Speaker 4 (39:05):
The right approach to each opponent.

Speaker 11 (39:07):
But everybody knows that this game means a little bit
more to everybody involved. So they've approached it the same
way they approach every week and it's been good focus,
good training intensity, and you know, trying to get the
details right in terms of how we approach the game

(39:29):
to have a good day.

Speaker 12 (39:30):
When you look back at the history of this rivalry,
anything that kind of stands out, as you know, maybe
one or two big moments that kind of define this rivalry.

Speaker 11 (39:41):
The fans typically help define what that feels like are
I'll speak to our.

Speaker 4 (39:49):
Environment at Tiqul.

Speaker 11 (39:50):
Those games feel different and it's it's fun to be
a part of. I think both teams have been successful
over the last uh, you know, a few years, and
that's made for I think entertaining games a good level
in the games being played with I don't know what
the whatever the record is, there's been success on both

(40:13):
sides in different ways, so certain moments certainly that stick
out in games, but.

Speaker 4 (40:23):
It's just an.

Speaker 11 (40:24):
Exciting game to be a part of. I think for
both clubs, for you know, the state, and for the league.
So I think each club is representing themselves in the
league in a good way and trying to approach the
game with the right you know, mentality to entertain and

(40:44):
to you know, make your respective fan bases and clubs.

Speaker 12 (40:48):
Problem with your recent surge and now being at the
top of the table, but also a lot of teams
only separated by a few points, do you guys feel
any extra pressure or do you hear the extra noise
saying like now you guys are in the lead for
the shield or an episode how do you block that out?

Speaker 4 (41:08):
We don't.

Speaker 11 (41:09):
We pretty much approached every game to get to this
point the same way, so I think everybody knows where
we stand. Everybody has known where we stood every step
of the way, so nothing's changed. We'll continue to approach
each game and each opponent the same way and try
to maintain our position, which is certainly in the moment
a good one.

Speaker 4 (41:30):
Good morning.

Speaker 13 (41:31):
The first time this rivalry happened this year, you know,
it was kind of at the end of a three
game match week. Obviously, you know that costan frustration and whatnot.
Now that you have a proper build up a full
week going into this match, how does that change things?
And you're kind of what do you how do you
feel about.

Speaker 11 (41:45):
That they were stronger than us in the first matchup.
You know, the result obviously was favorable being on the
road and not performing particularly well and getting a point,
But it just gives you more time to work on
things against you know, an opponent that that is very

(42:05):
fluid in their play and throws a lot of different
things that you so you can look at different things,
work on different things, but you also need to We
spent a good amount of time to focus it on
on ways that we need to impact the game, you know,
with the ball and you know, not spend so much

(42:26):
time on your opponent that you lose sight of you know,
our own play and our own ideas. So it's it's
just afforded us more time than the first matchup.

Speaker 13 (42:34):
Yeah, and it seems like both team teams are going
to be getting a player back, you know, from the
US men's national team. Obviously for you guys, Miles, they
have Max over there for you with Miles kind of
getting them back, you know, obviously big big lift there.
But you know we've seen the back line has been
pretty thin with injuries and whatnot. What does that do
for you flexibility wise, you're leading game with subs and whatnot.

(42:57):
And then for them kind of what is Max you
know add back to their.

Speaker 4 (43:01):
It's good to have Miles back.

Speaker 6 (43:02):
It was.

Speaker 4 (43:04):
Certainly a long absence, but.

Speaker 11 (43:07):
You know you could see in a couple of days
he's excited to be back. We're excited to have him back,
as teammates are. So it gives us more options, more depth.
I mentioned Berto will be close teenage. Obviously was took
a knock and it was limited, but we're getting more players,
which gives us more depth and more options to approach

(43:29):
the game. So yeah, I'm certainly happy to have Miles back.

Speaker 2 (43:33):
Pat Noonan, the head coach of FC Cincinnati, ahead of

my name's Austin Elmore. But with Tony out, that doesn't
mean we change. We stick with what got us here,
and that is our guy, Charlie Goldsmith here at one
o'clock on Fridays, and he joins us again today. Hi Charlie,

(44:52):
Happy Friday. How are you.

Speaker 15 (44:54):
I'm doing great, Astin How are you?

Speaker 2 (44:56):
You know what I'm hanging in? There been a rough
week for a lot of us, but Friday always feels good.
It was a rough week for the Reds as well.
How do you explain this week?

Speaker 5 (45:06):
Now?

Speaker 2 (45:06):
I know they split the series with Miami, they struggle
a little bit. How do you explain this week for
the Reds?

Speaker 15 (45:14):
Well, I'll tell you what I was going to write.
If they lost on Wednesday, that would have been And
I mean these were based on real conversations I was
having just in general with the Reds going on, like
if they would have lost on Wednesday, that would have
been a the Reds just need to be better than
this at this point type moment, Like the word alarming
was the word I had circled in my notebook. And

(45:36):
now the fact that they bounced back, the fact that
they turned what could have been a six game squade,
which is what they went on leading into the break
last year. I believe it was a terrible series against
the Blue Jays or the Tigers. Actually that kind of
set the tone for them being sellers at the deadline.

Speaker 6 (45:54):
But the fact that the Reds.

Speaker 15 (45:55):
Responded as well as they did had to happen. Like,
I'm not a must win game guy, but that was
a bounce back, and then continuing that the series win
against the Rockies this weekend. It is just something that
has to happen because sure, like you can, you can
survive maybe another loss or two and then go get
hot later and sneak into the wildcard race. But you

(46:17):
should be you know, aiming higher than sneaking into the
wildcard race. Yeah, and to do that you need you
need games like Wednesday and Thursday, and you need to
keep that up.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
When you look at this season as a whole, We've
talked a lot about their inconsistency. What is the biggest
reason that you point to for their inconsistency.

Speaker 16 (46:40):
I just still look at it individually, Like when I
look at why they struggled over kind of the previous
week before Wednesday and Thursday, the biggest reasons all you know,
attributed to our one starting pitchers not going deep into games.

Speaker 6 (46:54):
You know, Avid had an off night.

Speaker 15 (46:56):
Martinez had a rough night. Lodolo had you know, one
bad pitch in that stretch, which was against the Phillies
as he took that loss. You know, Chase burned Goblin
up at Fenway Park, and then that really set the
bullpen back, and you sew bullpen guys who maybe were
a little tired, flip up and make mistakes of their own.
You saw the starters not leading the Reds to wins,

(47:16):
which is a formula that has to happen, you know,
like at least once a week, based on where this
team's at and how it's built. And then for an
offensive side, what I look at during this recent stretch is,
you know, freedom and the claim got cold again, and
especially against Miami, you felt a team that just didn't
have that you know, bark plug for lack of a
better term to stick with a cliche. So it has

(47:38):
been different. I don't look at it as an overarching
team inconsistency issue, but of course specific issues have popped up,
and those are the ones I saw most recently. But
then again, great situational hitting over the last two days
I thought on third day the approach base running was
critical and something the Reds have to keep up and
build on going forward. Obviously, Nick Leodola had a very

(48:00):
strong start as well. Elie de Lacruz hitting for power
the other way does unbelievable things for this offense. So
then they did find some turning points get back to
what they have.

Speaker 6 (48:10):
To do best.

Speaker 2 (48:11):
You mentioned TJ Friedel cooling off a little bit. I
was looking at the numbers. He hasn't played more than
ninety games except for once in his career, and that
was in twenty twenty three when he played one hundred
and thirty eight games. So this season he's already surpassed
his second most games in a year. Is there any
concern about him being able to consistently be the guy

(48:35):
that kind of led and carried this team at times?
Can he? Is there any concern about him maybe just
dropping off due to fatigue.

Speaker 6 (48:43):
I talked to.

Speaker 15 (48:44):
TJ about this, especially after Terry francona ro on to
say that maybe he does just look a little fatigue
right now. No one you make the case, but you
can definitely make the case that no one plays as
hard as TJ Friedel if you're making that lit of
who exerts the most effort on any given night, he's died,
and he's sliding, he's running into walls, and he's a

(49:07):
smaller guy, and there's just something to that. And last
year what happened was a combination of him getting tired,
in him frankly just breaking down physically, and that was
to me the alarming part. He had all this stuff,
tissue injuries, he just wasn't himself all season.

Speaker 6 (49:23):
The one encouraging.

Speaker 15 (49:24):
Thing to me that I see, and I talked to
TJ about this, was he's still bunting. So that's a
sign that his legs are still feeling strong because he
feels confident in his ability to beat the run or
to beat the sort of first with the way he's running.
He did not feel that way last year and he
did change. It was a game in Boston, in the
game in Philly with the button, not the buntings the solution,
but buntings a sign of maybe underlying how Fredo's feeling.

(49:48):
So those are encouraging things. I think the break will
do him well. He's his wife is also very close
to having a baby, so you know, you add all
that on top of it, It's kind of been an
interesting little time for TJ. Friedle, But I hope he's fine.
He has a routine he has a lot of confidence in.
But the Reds definitely need him to get hotted.

Speaker 2 (50:08):
The Reds also need Hunter Green at some point to
come back. I keep saying the word I keep using
to describe this situation is weird. I'm having a hard
time understanding what the original timeline was, why he was
going to try to come back maybe prior to the
All Star break or start a rehab assignment prior to
the All Star break. How do you explain the Hunter

(50:29):
Green situation.

Speaker 15 (50:32):
There's one word that I've circled that I've started that
I think is the key word explaining the situation. Confusing.
Like here was just a question I asked here Francona,
I said, can you explain why he's stealing symptoms and
he's not going on a rehab assignment. But on the
day he was supposed to go on a rehab assignment,
he's still out throwing a bullpen.

Speaker 2 (50:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (50:52):
Like, usually either you're feeling symptoms and you shut it
down and you take it easy, or you're not and
you throw a bullpen, like we keep saying the MRI
I came back clean. You can't tell someone who feels
hurt to just go out and pitch, right, Like, I
think that's the message you're hearing from Terry Francona. It's
like you just can't tell someone to pitch if they're

(51:14):
saying they're hurt. So I get that, But definitely there's confusion.
It's a little bit of frustration that would definitely be
understandable as this grade one gloring strain that Green suffered
in May, and there's been no new injury since is
still keeping him off the field.

Speaker 2 (51:32):
Are in July when that first happened and he went
to go get the second opinion or the second time
around or whatever it was. I remember we had you
on the show and I asked you about it, and
you said that Hunter is going through his process. Do
you think that it could just be maybe a mental
block of like I don't want to get hurt again.

(51:52):
I don't want to do this until I feel one
hundred percent. I'm not there yet, Like, is it is
that a possibility?

Speaker 6 (52:01):
I don't know.

Speaker 15 (52:02):
I can't say that. What I can't is, you know,
look at the history of the last three seasons with Hunter.
With Hunter, there was a situation that was almost identical
to discoring injury in twenty twenty three with the hip
stiffness that al right, he originally came back and then
he shut down, and then he went to Arizona, and
then the timeline got pushed back, and then in twenty

(52:22):
twenty four he banged his elbow into a cabinet was
shut down for a month. So these type of injury
situations that are different from what the other picture you're
dealing with, keep happening. Why you know, you know, Hunter
hasn't answered a lot of questions about that, and that's fine,
that's his prerogative. It's his you know, his injury stuff.

(52:43):
But certainly we've tried to ask so all that just
keeps you pointing back to the word confusing elseon one
more time, like again, like you don't want to just
tell someone who's hurt, you need to pitch. That's not
how this works. But certainly the situation has drawn drawn on.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
There was also conversation about his back and his hip.
Is is it those areas or is it specifically the
groin that's still giving him problems, because that's been a
little unclear to me.

Speaker 15 (53:11):
Yes, Hunters. Hunter told reporters on including myself, on Monday
that he wouldn't be going to the rehab assignment on
Tuesday and Louisville because he was feeling soreness and quote
that same area and then Hunter take questions, So that
would have been an obvious follow up, an obvious place
where we would have liked to have gotten more information

(53:32):
about what specifically Hunter was dealing with. The back's always
why he got the epidural is a question I still
don't have the answer to if the injury was mostly
gron related.

Speaker 2 (53:44):
Talking to Charlie Goldsmith Charlie's chalkboard, he's all over Fox
nineteen now as well. Andrew Abbott, though, has been awesome.
He is pitching like an ace. I think it's fair
to say he is the reds Ace right now. How
cool was that to see Andrew Rabbit get the call
and Francona make the announcement that he's going to be

(54:05):
an all Star.

Speaker 15 (54:07):
You know what I love love about Andrew Rabbit. His
whole story is being overlooked. I mean, frankly, you know,
like you know, you look at him and he's not
this big tall guy with long arm like a Hunter
Green or a Nicolodolo, or he's not a tight end
like Chase Burns's, and he went under recruited and then
he really really had to battle at Virginia to kind
of get his shot, and then he went overlooked by

(54:28):
scouts coming out of the draft and as a red prospect.
You know, in twenty twenty two, he wasn't one of
the hot names from a pitching perspective in the farm
system even into twenty twenty three until he went on
this incredibly hot stretch and even still like he gets
called up and we just overlooked the fact, like we
don't talk enough about that stretch Abbot had to open

(54:49):
twenty twenty three and the stretch he had through the
end of July in twenty twenty four last season, Like
he was neck and neck with Hunter Green at this
point last season from a production standpoint, and then he
got hurt. So now, what this season for him has
always been about is the plan he has in place
to succeed in July and August and September, which he
hasn't done before. But this is nothing new from Andrew Rabbit.

(55:12):
This is just who he's been there's an old school
approach about it. That's beautiful, that's underappreciated or on the league,
and to see someone like that get that moment and
get his moments in the sun. That, to me, here
are some of the coolest stories. Guys who just by
nature of what they do, are never set up in

(55:33):
the position to be the spotlight and then all of
a sudden, all of a sudden, you're that guy like that,
Those to me are the coolest stories in sports.

Speaker 2 (55:41):
He doesn't seem like and you know better than me
because you're around him. He doesn't seem like one of
those dudes that walks around with a chip on his
shoulder despite the fact that he's been overlooked and he's
had to go through a bunch of hoops to get
where he's at. But he doesn't seem like this intense,
chip on his shoulder type of guy. He's just like,
I'm going to go pitch.

Speaker 1 (56:02):
He's cool.

Speaker 15 (56:03):
I think that's the perfect way to put now. I
think that chip's there, and I think I've since that
a couple of times.

Speaker 2 (56:07):
Okay, But he's.

Speaker 15 (56:09):
More just cool in terms of.

Speaker 6 (56:11):
The fact that like he knows that he's.

Speaker 15 (56:14):
Going to have a way to beat you. And like
the part of this conversation too, is like, what was
the key for his start on Wednesday? It was the cutter, right,
It was the cutter that he added in spring training.
Do you know how many pitchers we've seen over the
last you know, during my time covering the rights, during
anyone's time covering the rights. Hunter Green's still working on
that change up, you know, Like all these guys say

(56:35):
they're going to add new pitch and what it can
do for their game, and we never really see that
pitch work. And for having to just pick something up
like that, I mean, there's just this naturalness to him
as a pitcher. That's one of his biggest gifts.

Speaker 2 (56:48):
I think you could say the same thing about Chase
Burns and the way that he's kind of developed the
change up since he's become a professional and at least
being able to throw that to left handers. Burns pitches tonight,
what are you expecting. Is this a game where he
can kind of relax a little bit because he's not
facing the Boston Red Sox or the Philadelphia Phillies. Is
this a game you think Burns goes into with a

(57:10):
little bit more confidence because of the opponent.

Speaker 15 (57:13):
I think it's the opposite. I think it's a game
he goes into a little more relaxed. But I guess
that's the exact same point you were trying to make
in Philly. The story was that. I mean, go back
and watch those first who fats the Chase Burns hat.
I think you saw a guy who you know was
too in the zone in Boston, so he was trying
to be too fine into a round the zone to

(57:34):
start the Philly game, and you were kind of worrying
about that command for a second. And then he gets
Bryce Harper to whiff through a beautiful flader and he
locks back in the place and he's like, all right,
here we go. I'm good. That was just a good reminder.
And then he strikes out the next league as he faced,
and he leaves the game without without a run on

(57:54):
the scoreboard. Now he's got to do stuff to lower
the pitch count. You know, pitch sequencing can be that
a command certainly can be a part of that command
was something that sure, you know, coming off the last
start as a whole, you'd like to see better this
time around. But I think you saw Chase start to
get a lot more comfortable on the big league mound
in Philadelphia.

Speaker 2 (58:13):
I would like to see Noelvi Marte get a little
bit more comfortable throwing the ball to first base. We
know like the prospect that he is and the player
that we all feel like he can be. How do
you explain his troubles defensively and how do the Reds
fix that?

Speaker 15 (58:31):
The troubles defensively, the troubles with the throws. There's something
that have been on the Olovie Marquess Gavin Report since
he was in the Mayors Farms. This is this has
always been a thing. It wasn't a thing in twenty
twenty three when he got called up with the Reds,
which is great. It was the thing last year. And
I think like, actually, if you're doing like a real
autopsy of the twenty twenty four Reds, loulove Martes throws

(58:53):
gets multiple paragraphs in that story, which I know sounds
like an over exaggerations.

Speaker 2 (58:58):
I love that.

Speaker 15 (59:00):
Well that I don't know. That's a sports writer cliche
we use when a team underperforms. You're at the autopsy
because Lolvie Martinez wasn't throwing the ball well well, David
Belt still stuck with him because that was quote the
best version of the team. But was that what the
team needed? But should they have been in more of
a developmental place anyway? Like that, that whole thing represented

(59:22):
the twenty twenty four Reds not knowing what they were,
and it was like a story I was following very
closely in real time. That is fascinating. That's for another day.
The twenty twenty five Reds are obviously trying.

Speaker 6 (59:34):
To win right now.

Speaker 15 (59:36):
Martue so clearly elevates the lineup like I'm bullish on
his swing. I was bullish on his swing even before
he had that big home run on Wednesday, because he
stay through the ball. His followed through looks compact. He's
swinging hard, and most importantly, pitchers aren't feeding him with
that Loane Away breaking ball, which is how they killed
him last season. And he was just I'm not unbelievable

(59:58):
kind of recognizing pitcher approaches. It was obvious to to
you know, my second cousin, that that's how pitchers were
attacking the old Marte last season. He looks much improved
at that. He just now has to be able to
throw the ball from third base to first base, you're
seeing them protect him by taking him out of games.
I don't know that I agree with that, but you

(01:00:19):
know they pulled him for defense when they've been up
the last couple of days, because at the end of
the day, he's either your starting third basement or you're not. Yeah,
or he's not, and you kind of just need to
let him play. And again I get protecting him, but
because of how weak of a spot the third base
position has been for the Reds and how much Spinal
and Cees have shown, they're just not in a spot

(01:00:39):
to handle that every day flying time right now. One,
you need to see more from Mark. Two, give him
a shot.

Speaker 6 (01:00:45):
Three if not in you still win well.

Speaker 15 (01:00:48):
Then third base becomes your biggest need of the trade deadline.
So you just need more information right now and then
make a decision on what Neuovie Marque is on this year's.

Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
Speaking of third base, I thes released DJ Lemayhew. It
feels like a move that the Reds would consider, not
saying it's the right move, but do you know anything
about Dj lem Mayhew, If the Reds would potentially kick
the tires on that, and if it's even worth it.

Speaker 15 (01:01:16):
So they cut him because he quote wasn't physically strong
enough to play third base, and because he wasn't hitting
for power, and obviously he shouldn't have been at second base.
So I believe how he was described in New York
was a low power, unversatile bench back.

Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
I don't know that he'd fit right in.

Speaker 15 (01:01:36):
Yeah, that's the conversation for another day. But I think
he could try to get actual playing time somewhere and
re establish his value.

Speaker 8 (01:01:44):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
You and I had a good conversation a month or
two ago when we were in Atlanta, when I was
down there to watch the Reds. You said at the
time that you were going to go cover the All
Star Game in Atlanta. Are you still gonna do that?
And if so, what are you most looking forward to
about the All Star Game.

Speaker 6 (01:01:59):
I'm very excited.

Speaker 15 (01:02:00):
I'm going down tomorrow. First of all, I'd like to
make sure that like, let's start saying the name south
Stewart and Alfredo do No, do no further away. But
I'd like to establish myself as the south Stewart guy
future game tomorrow, and then I'm just well draft on Sunday,
you know, moving forward to seeing how they kind of
turn that into event, you know, hopefully maybe in the
Red Straft one of the guys will be in attendance,

(01:02:23):
and then just the I don't know. It's just from
a from a media perspective, it's really cool with the
access you get with the players around the game to
chase interesting story story ideas. I'm planning to talk to
Francisco Lindor about Terry Francona and Elie del Cruz and
the connections there, so that should be a lot of fun.
I just want to take it all into are you

(01:02:44):
going kind of the main goal I have from what's that?

Speaker 2 (01:02:46):
Are you going to the Derby?

Speaker 15 (01:02:49):
I'm going to the Derby, I'm going to the game,
and I'm covering it all. It's kind of my main
goal is kind of just to set the scene, to
show the experience, to show the experience that Ellien that
have it or having like those are my main goals
kind of for the Derby, for the All Star game,
for the Red Carpet, for the media days, all that
kind of stuff. I'm really excited about all that. It'll

(01:03:09):
lead my first time and it sounds like an incredible event.
Actually wasn't able to make it to any of it
in twenty fifteen when it was in Cincinnati.

Speaker 4 (01:03:16):
So that's all.

Speaker 15 (01:03:17):
It's kind of stuck with me and I got the
chance to cover it this year and the team really excited.

Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
Yeah, that's really cool man, looking forward to that. Before
I'll let you go, you mentioned salth Stewart. I made
a list of guys earlier this week of guys that
I think are untouchable in the Reds organization as we
head towards the trade deadline. Do you think salth Stewart's
one of those guys?

Speaker 6 (01:03:37):
He would be for me?

Speaker 15 (01:03:38):
Okay, the story of the deadline from a prospect perspective
with the Red first of all, and this is a
long show for another day, but there are two huge
gaps in the system from a prospect perspective, in Triple
A and in High A and the low A guys
are just unestablished. And do know he's got real value,
but it's not from that. They're all unestablished. Like there's
like a top eight or nine in this system, you know,

(01:04:00):
go down through like Edwin Arroyo and Tyson Lewis and
Sammy Staffera. Those last two guys are younger, heter Rodriguez,
Chase Petty, guys like that can Collier like, those are
real top one hundred ish style prospects. Once you get
past the last guy in that tier, to me, there's
a pretty big drop off. There's not like that mid

(01:04:21):
tier of prospects that you trade for kind of a
mid tier value guy. On the trade market, you have
the top prospects that you trade, and then you'd have
the flyer prospects that you'd trade. You know, guys who
you know. The hope is that the team acquiring them
would see and hope for the best. So that gap
in the system is also a part of what they
will and won't be able to do in terms of

(01:04:43):
their approach with the deadline. But to me, Stuart's untouchable
because that guy's just a ball player.

Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
Yeah, that's good stuff. Charlie. You've been very generous with
your time on this Friday. I really appreciate it. Charlie
Goldsmith Charlie's Chalkboard Fox nineteen gonna be covering the All
Star Game. Have fun, man, safe travels. Thanks for making
some time today. Thanks Austin, that is Charlie Goldsmith. Charlie
g underscore underscore on Twitter. By the way, if you

(01:05:09):
are still living under a rock and not following him.
You should follow him. All right, we'll take a break,

Speaker 17 (01:05:37):

Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
Yeah back show rights well, raights, Well, welcome back into Talkbacks.
Thank you, Harry. That was a great conversation with Charlie Goldsmith.
We got a talk back gift card to give away
that'll be coming up in the next segment. In the
final segment of the hour, two tickets to upper Deck
Golf at Great American Ballpark coming up next weekend. Let's

(01:06:41):
not waste any more time. Let's get right to it.

Speaker 19 (01:06:46):
Captain Tito is a magnificent here, big fan of the show.

Speaker 8 (01:06:50):
I'm just here to say we need all hands on deck. Yeah,
I know that losing streak.

Speaker 19 (01:06:54):
Took the wind out of your sails, but don't go overboard,
don't jump ship yet.

Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
With a crew like.

Speaker 19 (01:07:01):
Spencer Stern, Mass McLean and Sam Hull, we'll never get
Christian Kard. I see I'm stranded out at sea and
that il Dela cruise ship, well he can hit the
ball a nautical.

Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
Mile a nautical mile. The Beauty of Ai.

Speaker 20 (01:07:14):
Guys, we just split right through some marlins and talk
about the poop deck. We've got the Colorado Rockies up
next to go on down to the Ohio river Port
this weekend.

Speaker 19 (01:07:25):
And so your support for the Red Lags skipper out.

Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
Yeah, the Beauty of Ai. There's a little bit of
Tito in there, but not quite spot on.

Speaker 21 (01:07:34):
All right, Matty, I'd be appreciating the talkbackers me talking
about me long John Sillers and the deep fried crumbs
next to your fish and your chicken be the leg
where now a pig Stan's It's not a sad thing, matey.
It gave me the idea of coming up with the
restaurant chain. I hoped because I'd be hopping from Tamo

(01:07:55):
to Tamo. This talkback was rated or really.

Speaker 2 (01:07:59):
By well done, Well done keV Summertime.

Speaker 22 (01:08:04):
Rank them on drinks. Oh, in honor of Tony going
on vacation, peach frosted lemonade currently at Chick fil A,
possibly the greatest invention in the history of fast food.
Classic unsweet iced tea or any beverage prepared at the
dakery deck.

Speaker 2 (01:08:21):
Well, I haven't been to the daker deck, so I'm
going to rank that last. I love anything peach flavored.
I actually got some peach type lemonade for this weekend
to drink, so I'm gonna rank that number one, even
though I've never had it, and then I'll go unsweet
tea number two. I don't like sweet tea at all.
Is that a hot take for me? I know I

(01:08:42):
always make fun of Tony's food takes, but I'm not
a sweet tea guy.

Speaker 9 (01:08:47):
Hello, this is former President Ronald Reagan and Whale. I
just got a call from the housekeeper at Camp David Klingler.

Speaker 8 (01:08:53):
She quit.

Speaker 9 (01:08:54):
Apparently the retreat has been trashed by a party thrown
by Johnny from Melhealthy. Of course, there's blender parts all
over the place. You can tell Slick Willie's been there
from the lingering stench of lazy lettuce. Oh, and the
Nancy's secret sauce cabinet got raided. Does anyone know how
to get alcohol stains off ceiling tiles?

Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
The lazy lettuce? Now, I was at the gym this morning,
and I got up early because I'd get in here early.
I was there much earlier than I normally am. And
I walked past a woman in the gym today that
reeked so badly of the ladies lazy lettuce, as Ron

(01:09:36):
would call it, that it almost put me on the floor.
Do people do that before they work out? And if so,
why I need some sort of explanation for that. But
I mean it about put me on the ground. Hey, Austin,
it's Greg.

Speaker 23 (01:09:55):
You know, my biggest concern going forward right now is
the infield defense, father and second base. I just don't
have a lot of feel too good about third, short
and first. So how do you feel about that?

Speaker 4 (01:10:09):
Anyway?

Speaker 23 (01:10:10):
As usual, Austin, You're doing a good job.

Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
Thanks well, Thanks Greg, I appreciate that. I feel really
good about McLean at second. I feel really good about
steer at first. I'm I think Ellie is going in
the right direction. I think he's slowly improving. Maybe that
leg was bothering him more than we thought. And third
base is just a complete crapshoot. I mean they're in
trouble there.

Speaker 24 (01:10:30):
File is Hank kill here, and well, boy, I'm gonna
tell what all is good in the world of Hank Hill.
I've been on load management. Tell what man the fan's
been on a couple of trips, couple vacations this summer.
Back in town. Gonna go see Burns pitch tonight, see
some fireworks here. We've been watching that quarterback series and

(01:10:53):
really enjoying that. And well, let's go get a sweep.
Let's rock the Rockies.

Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
Good to hear from you, Hank. I'm glad you're enjoying
load management season. Hope you enjoy the ballpark tonight. By
the way, tomorrow they're giving away that Ellie City Connect
basketball jersey. It's pretty sweet. It's a great idea by
the Reds. Looking forward to seeing a lot of people
wearing that. You know, I tried to get some quarterback
in last night. I thought that I would be able
to with the Reds play in an early game, but

(01:11:21):
I was busier than a one armed wallpaper hanger. But
we're gonna try to break down some of the big
parts of quarterback next week on the show.

Speaker 25 (01:11:30):
Always been a Dolo fan. Yeah, it's concerning with Hunter Green,
I thought you'd finally be healthy. But Krawl's concerning. I mean,
he has made some steps, but you need to put
all the cards into the middle of the table. There's
no dominant teams this year. They got a lot of potential.
I can get people fired if you really need a friend,

(01:11:54):
feed an animal.

Speaker 2 (01:11:56):
Oh okay, yeah, biggest concern being Nick Krawl. I think
that's fair.

Speaker 8 (01:12:00):
What's up Boston?

Speaker 26 (01:12:02):
So I was thinking, you know, Noelvie Marte I love
is bad. I think it's I think he could be great.
I agree, but he's not the best fielder. You know,
the throws from third to first or aren't really clicking.
What do you think about if they shifted him the
second base and then shifted McClain over the field, because
I feel like McLain has.

Speaker 9 (01:12:23):
The glove and the the arm.

Speaker 6 (01:12:26):
That can play third base.

Speaker 8 (01:12:28):
I don't know, maybe I'm on my mom.

Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
I don't know that you're out of your mind. I
think that the Red's best defensive alignment would be Elliott third,
McClean at short, Marte at second, and Steer it first.
Now you I think you would lose out on turning
double plays with Marte and Ellie and McLain are so
good at that that it makes it worth it that
those two are up the middle. But I think you know.

(01:12:52):
Spencer Steeer has also said that his favorite and most
comfortable defensive position is third base. I wish he would
play there a little bit more, but you can't because
nobody can play first. Candel Ario's gone and Cees is useless.
But I think I've always thought Ellie should play third
and McClean should play short, and everything hit on the

(01:13:12):
left side would be swallowed up. But I just don't
see them doing that. I don't expect them to do that.

Speaker 27 (01:13:21):
Hey, Austin, Jeff and your Richmond, it's been a little while.
I just wanted to chime in about your topics today.
As far as my question for you, are you resigned
to the fact that Nick Krawl is going to be
here for a while or do you think his job
is in jeopardy at all? My concern is we look

(01:13:43):
at the standings right now, and honestly, you look at
him a month ago and it doesn't look much different.

Speaker 2 (01:13:50):
Yeah, that's true. That's a great point. I don't know
about the future Nick Krawl. To be honest, I would
hope that he's under a lot of pressure. I would
hope that he feels the heat. I would hope that
the people above him are holding his feet to the
fire and saying, hey, man, you've got to do better
than this. I would hope that's the case. That should
be the feeling of everybody in the organization because they

(01:14:10):
have not performed at the level they're supposed to. I've
you know, I've said from the very beginning this year
that I'm not a believer in Nick Krawl.

Speaker 4 (01:14:18):
I'm just not.

Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
I think the organization needs a breath of fresh air
from outside. Pretty Much everything they've done over the last
several years has been internal hires, promotions and just kind
of growing the organization and promoting from within. I think
they desperately need somebody from the outside to just give
a new perspective. Maybe different experiences, work with different people,

(01:14:45):
and you know, shed a different light on team building.

Speaker 28 (01:14:49):
Big going in Kentucky man would a win last night,
I told you is most important.

Speaker 4 (01:14:53):
I came.

Speaker 28 (01:14:53):
I'm in the ball park tonight. I'm section one thirty
four right. We'reki from legs at the other night. Anybody
want to pop in, I'm right there on the aisle.
I asked for Big Kahona. Uh, yesterday you had me confused, man.
You said, uh, Todge Boyd.

Speaker 8 (01:15:09):
I was thinking Todd Boyd.

Speaker 28 (01:15:10):
I mean, did we sign the Clemson quarterback Todge Brooks.
I didn't think you was a man that ever.

Speaker 8 (01:15:15):
Got names wrong.

Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
I'm gonna do that like fifty more times between now
and the end of the season. I guarantee you. I've
already done it like three times. I think I always
say Taj Boyd instead of TOAJ Brooks. I meant TOAJ Brooks.
My apologies to Taj Brooks.

Speaker 17 (01:15:32):
Tony as is shiny for mant healthy John, I just
left slick Willies.

Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
Uh to say that my cornbread.

Speaker 17 (01:15:40):
Is baked in the middle is more the word I
go for. Ronald Reagan, My goodness, can you stopp being
an old man on the lawn? O tr is one
of the safest plates wow to walk around. People don't
know howspoiled we are in the city. We have a
very safe city. Fyi, Austin, I have a question for you.

Speaker 29 (01:15:59):
Okay, Austin hadrew from South Bend.

Speaker 2 (01:16:02):
Herew oh those tricky, tricky Reds.

Speaker 29 (01:16:05):
Man, the losses are horrible, They're like laying an egg
and then the winds are amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
And know the shutout last night was great.

Speaker 29 (01:16:15):
But at the end of the day, these guys just
seem to be a five hundred club. So we'll see.
Hopefully they'll get hot the second half. Have a great weekend.

Speaker 30 (01:16:23):
Yeah, Austin doing fabulous, fabulous, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (01:16:30):
Ryan h.

Speaker 30 (01:16:32):
Just restarted Austin doing fabulous today on this fabulous Friday.

Speaker 2 (01:16:37):
Thank you.

Speaker 31 (01:16:39):
Chucky gold Beast was on the money and the Reds
and Chase burning it down to night, sir, whoop them Rockies.

Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
Let's go Reds all right? There we go see if
this goes through.

Speaker 17 (01:16:54):
My question is if I gave you the choice of
two tickets. Your first ticket is to the Ohio State
Michigan in the Horseshoe in o High State, and your
ticket is literally the first seat on the sideline behind
the High States bench. Your second ticket is this year's
AFC Championship the Bengals are hosting championships, but your ticket
is the most top most three hundred section chance ticket.

Speaker 2 (01:17:18):
Are you taking great question? AFC Championship not even close.
I've seen Ohio State Michigan, although I've never seen it
in the shoe. I would love to see it in
the shoe. But if it means the Bengals are back
in the AFC Championship game, give me the AFC Championship.

Speaker 13 (01:17:30):
Was anyone else listening to land answ during extra innings
last night and we all found out that that Red's
Winds song was completely made with Ai.

Speaker 32 (01:17:40):
Man, get that Ai slump off there.

Speaker 8 (01:17:42):
I don't want to hear that.

Speaker 2 (01:17:43):
Prat, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Speaker 8 (01:17:46):
I did not hear that.

Speaker 32 (01:17:48):
Yeah, hey, it's probably too late to drop this, but
Michael Phelps is on record for the using the would
you say lazy lettuce for every workout okay and almost
before every swim.

Speaker 2 (01:18:04):
Okay, all right, I mean, I'm I just want to
know why, what the purpose.

Speaker 8 (01:18:07):
Is it's been lazy letter?

Speaker 33 (01:18:11):
Huh uh.

Speaker 8 (01:18:12):
Some people use it medicinally.

Speaker 34 (01:18:14):
I know, maybe that lady has social anxiety and didn't
feel comfortable going to the gym, and maybe that put
her in a point she felt like she could be
comfortable and go to the gym.

Speaker 2 (01:18:24):
That's a good point. I didn't think of it that way.

Speaker 4 (01:18:28):
I love to get danke befo.

Speaker 8 (01:18:30):
We're going to work out, put on some good tunes.
All of a sudden, your mind's in a.

Speaker 35 (01:18:35):
Totally dioker place, and boy, boy, you never feel the pain.

Speaker 8 (01:18:39):
I can run for a mile.

Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
Okay, all right, this is I'm learning.

Speaker 8 (01:18:42):
Something awesome and this is christ.

Speaker 2 (01:18:49):
But nah, man, I was watching quarterback yesterday and.

Speaker 17 (01:18:53):
Every time, every every close.

Speaker 26 (01:18:56):
Loss, Man, you just hear somebody in Joe Burrowsy or
just hand.

Speaker 24 (01:19:00):
Hey, man, you're the greatest amen, no matter what you're
back up, especially.

Speaker 35 (01:19:04):
When Brown and Tay that.

Speaker 2 (01:19:07):
I'm like, man, you think Joe want to hear that?

Speaker 6 (01:19:09):
Man, good jar just.

Speaker 2 (01:19:13):
Just being a just being a good teammate. Man, just
trying to be a good teammate. By the way, Coach PJ.
Street uh checked in with a little bit of information
about the lazy lettuce. Uh It says it can make
workouts more fun or less monotonous, and increased enjoyment and
motivation also helps with the pain reduction. Like our guy

(01:19:35):
said and recovery because of their properties, especially joint pain. Uh,
the anxiety part, the mental focus, appetite control. These are
all parts and different strains and stuff like that. So
thanks coach PJ for wang. And he also said that
people take cyalis and viagra before working out for a
better pump. You remember what o Jo Sinko used to

(01:19:58):
take viagra before a game games? That dude was a lunatic.

Hello, this is former president Ronaldrigan.

Speaker 8 (01:21:48):
Well.

Speaker 9 (01:21:49):
I know for a fact that when Terry Francona managed
the Red Sox that there was a list of players
that he and GM theo Epstein tried to acquire to
bring senior leadership to the clubhouse. I asked Terry if
he knew where this list was these days, and he said,
we all know there never was a list, it never existed,

(01:22:09):
and don't ask about it again.

Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
Oh it's sick, but that's funny.

Speaker 38 (01:22:15):
You know, in years past, the Red sweat suffer with
the June swoon, right, but now it's.

Speaker 8 (01:22:22):
The July lie.

Speaker 38 (01:22:24):
Yeah, we're all lying to ourselves that the reds are
actually contenders of anything. Yeah, they're contending for fourth place again,
the July lie.

Speaker 8 (01:22:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
Yeah, Yeah, that's a tough pill to swallow. Tony.

Speaker 39 (01:22:47):

and forget you too.

one's funny.

You better leave all.

Speaker 4 (01:23:39):
He knows the score.

Speaker 8 (01:23:40):

Speaker 4 (01:23:41):

Speaker 40 (01:23:43):
He works right next door to the FBI.

Speaker 2 (01:23:46):

Speaker 41 (01:24:09):
Former Reds outfielder Tyler Naquin. Wow, stay tuned the inside

Speaker 36 (01:24:26):
Don't let him watch Jilly or some guy he looks.
Let him watch Dodgers and Yankees and such. Yeah, Mamas,
don't let you babies grow up to be Reds fans,
cause daude just start drinking and then they'll be thinking

(01:24:46):
that the Reds had a shot.

Speaker 2 (01:24:49):
This is good, man, This is a good group some
you know, baby pandering to me a little bit. That
one kind of ran out of time. I'm gonna give
it to someone who's snuck in late yesterday, on time,
on topic. I'm gonna give it to peg Leg Pete.
Congratulations to peg Leg Pete, winner of the Cincy Shirts

(01:26:33):
this sound. If you hear this sound, that means you're
a winner. We start with Randy, who's been on hold
the longest. Hello, Randy, are you ready?

Speaker 8 (01:26:44):
I'm ready.

Speaker 2 (01:26:45):
On May fifteenth, twenty twenty three, Matt McClain played his
first career game against the Colorado Rockies. He recorded his
first career hit in the third inning. It was off
of what Rockies pitcher?

Speaker 39 (01:27:00):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (01:27:01):
Uh Galleraga.

Speaker 2 (01:27:03):
Good guess, but incorrect. Joe in Milford? Do you know?

Speaker 19 (01:27:10):
Well?

Speaker 6 (01:27:11):
I do not.

Speaker 2 (01:27:13):
Would you like to take a guess?

Speaker 15 (01:27:16):
He'd I remember it in the Rockies pictures?

Speaker 2 (01:27:22):
I guess all right? Well thanks anyways, Joe, I guess,
let's go to Harry and Athens. Harry, what do you got?

Speaker 6 (01:27:32):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:27:33):
The guy that's pitching to Night No, it's not it
is not him, But that's a good guess. Harry, Thank
you all right? Phone lines still open. Uh, we have
nobody currently on hold trying to win tickets. Matt McClain,
in the top of the third inning May fifteenth, doubled
it to center field at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies.

(01:27:56):
It was his second career at bat, his first hit,
first career hit. Do you know the pitcher that's surrendered
that hit to Matt mcclin five one three, seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. You got about forty more seconds here to
call in before I got to hit the brake because

(01:28:18):
we've got to talk to Tommy G, the Voice of
the Orange and Blue, about some FC Cincinnati. If nobody
calls in by then we'll just do it after that,
I suppose. But I think I thought this would be
kind of easy, especially for you people that like to
cheat and look it up really quickly. But uh, I
guess it's not going to happen this segment. Stay tuned,
give you another chance. Five one three, seven four nine,

(01:28:40):
fifteen thirty. At the conclusion of the conversation with Tommy G,
we'll give away two tickets for upper deck golf. Tommy
G is next. You're listening to Sincey three to sixty
hour two, brought to you by our good friends at
Cincy Shirts. Right here on the home of the Bengals,

Hi, Hello, welcome man, our number three on a Friday.
Time is flying when you're having fun. Let's talk soccer,
Let's talk football as some people like to call it,
and let's turn up the heat because the hell is real.
Derby Round two of the twenty twenty five campaign is
coming to TQL Stadium this weekend, and the man of

(01:29:42):
the match, as far as I'm concerned, is our next guest,
our guy, Tommy g Tommy Tommy Tommy, Hi, Tommy Austin.

Speaker 8 (01:29:51):
Happy Friday.

Speaker 35 (01:29:52):
We are having fun now, Armie are in our usual slot.
Nothing can stop this train of four straight wins for
the Orange and Blue going into the massive rivalry matchup
a six point max at its finest.

Speaker 8 (01:30:08):
This weekend, and uh, you know, not the biggest match
we've ever seen between these two teams.

Speaker 35 (01:30:13):
But it is up there, and uh it's pretty exciting
that it comes at a time when FC Cincinnati are
back atop of the table in all the Major league soccer.

Speaker 2 (01:30:23):
Well, you know, I heard what Pat Noonan said yesterday
in his press conference. He's asking a little bit more
juice for the team, and he said, not juice, but
more awareness. I was about to ask you if you
have more juice, but I can hear it in your voice,
I mean your juice. Are you Are you going to
sleep tonight?

Speaker 8 (01:30:39):
Listen, Friday's at two.

Speaker 35 (01:30:41):
I tend to have max juice by you. I'm talking
about six year old birthday party juice boxes everywhere type
of juice, right, Like, that's that's where I'm at when
I when I log on with you guys in this
usual slot, that said, oh yeah, I mean it's it's
kind of like Christmas Eve. I was walking out of
the facility earlier and I said, I don't know if

(01:31:02):
anybody's gonna sleep tonight, right, We're all gonna be up
Christmas Eve, guys, like fired up, see all tomorrow, and
I do. I think a lot of people get excited
about this game.

Speaker 8 (01:31:12):
You should.

Speaker 35 (01:31:13):
It's it's a rivalry matchup, it's a Darby as you said, like,
it's a it's a head to head battle against your rival,
and it's never easy.

Speaker 8 (01:31:22):
So no, and and there's all the.

Speaker 35 (01:31:24):
Extra meaning now of where these two teams sit in
the standing. So I think that it's no, it's very exciting.
I hope I sleep a little bit because I got
a big week ahead, so there's there's a lot going
on for the Orange and Blue over the next eight days,
So I'm gonna have to get some sleep. But man,
once I get up tomorrow, and I tend to be
an early riser, like it's gonna be forever until kickoff,

(01:31:47):
or it's certainly gonna feel that way.

Speaker 2 (01:31:48):
Yeah, I hear you. We've talked about the impact of
Vander on this team and what he has meant, certainly
during this stretch. Explain to people, imagine somebody's never seen
him play, how would you describe how he plays and
the impact he has on the pitch for the Orange

(01:32:09):
and Blue.

Speaker 8 (01:32:10):
Yeah, it's a good question.

Speaker 35 (01:32:11):
I mean, it's MVP impact you know, I think right
now he's probably the leading candidate for the award. I
certainly hope that we're still having that conversation come October,
because if we do, then we're having a lot of
other fun conversations as well. But he's just performing at
such a high level right now, and he's comfortable here.

(01:32:32):
He's comfortable with Kevin Dnke. I think both of them
with twelve goals, pushing each other a little bit for
that team lead. They're tied right now. But he's doing
it in other ways and he's creating with the assists
as well. So I mean, he has twenty goal contributions
in nineteen appearances in the regular season. That's plus plus
a goal contribution per game. And it's not just here

(01:32:52):
in Cincinnati. He was doing the same thing in Portland.
He's played seventy four career games in Major League Soccer
and he has thirty six goals thirty two assists. That's
sixty eight goal contribution since arriving here in the league.

Speaker 8 (01:33:06):
So I think that, you know.

Speaker 35 (01:33:09):
He's a little bit like a magician out there, and
the way that he creates space, the way that he
makes passes.

Speaker 8 (01:33:14):
We saw it with a goal that he assisted on
to Kevin Denke.

Speaker 35 (01:33:18):
Just the way that he beautifully crossed that ball and
got it around that last defender. I mean it had
to be weighted and hooked just right to get to Kevin,
and then it becomes, you know, a relatively easy finish
for Kevin to put in the back of the net.

Speaker 8 (01:33:32):
But no, I think just the way that he.

Speaker 35 (01:33:35):
Plays and he finds space and recently there's been a
lot of space for him.

Speaker 8 (01:33:40):
But he works hard.

Speaker 35 (01:33:41):
He does a lot of the little things that I
think that Pat and the coaching staff ask of him.
And because he does those things, it sets the team
up for more success. And if this team is successful,
then that certainly means that a Vander is successful, so
that's good for everybody.

Speaker 2 (01:33:55):
The offense has certainly been a part of this success,
but the defense as well has you know, been holding
it together to an extend. And Miles Robinson now back
after his men's national team duty with the United States,
how has the back line performed in Miles's absence and
how much of a lift is it to get him back?

Speaker 35 (01:34:17):
Well, all things considered, I'd say they did pretty well
because four straight wins while he was gone so I
think that is huge. Remember the conversation we had last week,
there wasn't a lot of depth at center back in
to start the match on The only true center back
starting that game was Matt Miosgo. We saw teenage today
becoming late and help actually since they close it out,

(01:34:39):
but you only have Matt Mioska And now you get
Miles back in, who is an All Star again, second
consecutive year that he's been selected for that honor, and
so you put him back in there. Teenagers getting healthy,
Alberta Floydes is getting healthy, so I think they're in
a good place. I think getting Miles back is huge,

(01:34:59):
but they have and while Miles was gone, and I
think that that was really important because if you did
it and you had some bad resulting there, he kind
of strug your sholder and say, well, look, we're missing
a lot of guys in the back line. Nick Haglan's
still out, but he's trending on the side. He's really
really close, I think to being back in with the eleven.
Patentis press conference suggested that he might be back in
with the group as soon as Monday to get ready

(01:35:21):
for that match on Wednesday, So could we see Nick
Dress for the first time in a month and a half.
Possibly that'd be awesome to see him back into the mix.
So I think defensively, the team is in better shape
certainly certainly than they were six days ago when they
took the pitch against Chicago. And that's a great thing
because Columbus can score. They can score in bunches. You

(01:35:42):
got to be so strong defensively to kind of set
the tone against the crew.

Speaker 2 (01:35:46):
Last time these two teams met, they fought to a drawl.
FC takes a point on the road. How different will
this match be compared to that match? How have the
teams evolved since then?

Speaker 3 (01:35:59):
Well?

Speaker 8 (01:35:59):
I don't know. It might be might be kind of similar,
to be honest, because I don't know that that they're
all that much different.

Speaker 35 (01:36:07):
I mean that my biggest question, I guess right now
and not knowing what the Crew are going to do.
Patrick Shulti hasn't played in a match since that f
C Cincinnati match at Lower dot Com Field on May seventeenth.
He picked up an oblique injury actually the following week
warming up and has been out ever since. So Evan
Bush now has started the last four games, and Bush

(01:36:30):
is a player that f she Sincenty has had some
success against in the past, so that's certainly something to
keep an eye on. But I think that you know,
the goalkeeping situation, Schulty's obviously very good. Evan Bush a
long time veteran in the league with one hundred ninety
five appearances, so so don't don't count Evan out by
any means, but it certainly makes a big difference which
one of those guys is back there. And Evan has

(01:36:52):
done very well in the five starts that he's made
for the crew this year. But they've a couple of
players who are back from different injuries or international duties,
and f C Cincinnati has Miles Robinson back, So listen,
I think the only difference is that now we're three
months further along in the season or two months, I
should say, that match was in May, so two months
further along in the season. And you look at the

(01:37:14):
table and where these teams stand, and let's just look
at the East. You got, you know, Columbus is fourth
in the East at thirty eight points and f C
Cincinnati are first in the East and all of Major
League Soccer with the forty two points. So if the
Crew get'll come in and get a win. Now they're
just a point back, so things things really tighten up.
And that's where you know we started it. And I said,
it's a six point match in the true sense of
you know that meaning. And if folks aren't familiar with

(01:37:37):
that term, they're saying, Tommy, you're a big dummy.

Speaker 8 (01:37:40):
You get three points for a win.

Speaker 35 (01:37:41):
Well, listen, both can be true, but the reality is
that you call it a six point match because if
Beauly Cincinnati win and the Crew don't, well, that's a
six point swinging as to where f Ccinini pushes themselves away,
keeps Columbus from getting anything on the night, so and
vice versa.

Speaker 8 (01:37:58):
If Columbus win.

Speaker 35 (01:37:59):
So no, I think that it it's not all that
different because the personnel is pretty similar. Just at f
C Cincinnati. I mean, both teams are unbeaten in the
last four f C Cincinnati with four straight wins, Columbus
three or four wins.

Speaker 8 (01:38:14):
So no, I think it should it should.

Speaker 35 (01:38:16):
Be a really good, really intriguing match over at t
QOL Stadium.

Speaker 2 (01:38:22):
FC Cincinnati with forty two points. You mentioned top of
the supporter shield standings. How much does that give them
some extra juice to to know, all right, we're at
the top, we've done this before, we know we can
do it. I know not everybody is a holdover from
that team that won it, but like, can that serve
as a motivating factor as well as like, yeah, we're
at the top of the table.

Speaker 35 (01:38:43):
Yeah, I think so it should, right, everybody should want
to win another Supporter Shield and bring that back here
to Cincinnati after you know, went to Miami last year.
So no, I think I think it is. And I
think when you look at the schedule when it's not
that anybody's looking ahead, but you know in your next
four games you have Columbus in Miami twice home and

(01:39:03):
home with those guys, and then a trip to Salt
Lake in there as well. So when you look at
those three Eastern Conference teams, I mean, Miami has grown
to make up and they have extra games to do
it because they've missed some MLS games.

Speaker 8 (01:39:16):
But if you can get nine.

Speaker 35 (01:39:18):
Points from those three Eastern Conference games, then you're setting
yourself up really well going into the League's Cup break for.

Speaker 8 (01:39:26):
Where you're at the table.

Speaker 35 (01:39:27):
And that would mean that when play resumes in August
after the three group stage games, League's Cup, you would be,
you know, in a position atop the table and you know,
potentially the whole Supportershill race. And I think that that's
pretty exciting. Is that at extra juice? Absolutely, at extra incentive? Absolutely?
And listen, not only do you win the shield and

(01:39:48):
bring another piece of hardware here if you win it,
but then you're setting yourself up for playoffs as that
one overall seed, and you know that you're not leaving
Cincinnati save one first round road game, which I could argue,
don't blue in the face is kind of cruel and
ridiculous in some ways. You know that you have to
leave after win the Supporter Shield, but you know that them's.

Speaker 8 (01:40:09):
The rules, as they say, right, But yeah, no.

Speaker 35 (01:40:13):
I think there's a lot of incentive there, and and
this team sees themselves the top of the table with
this stayed now on the second half of the season,
and that should be plenty of motivation to stay there
the rest of the way.

Speaker 2 (01:40:25):
Just thinking about this is, you know, you look around
at the rest of Major League Soccer in Miami is
obviously the team that's talked about the most because of
Messi and his star power, but Columbus is you know,
a historic club that's won multiple MLS Cups and you
know exactly what you know Philadelphia has been, and that's
been of a rivalry. Do you think FC Cincinnati is
maybe overlooked or underappreciated by what they've been able to do? Obviously,

(01:40:49):
they won the Shield a couple of years ago, but
the model of consistency that they've been do they get
enough credit for that?

Speaker 8 (01:40:57):
I think they're starting to.

Speaker 35 (01:40:59):
I think now that it's a fourth consecutive year and
you know, look, I haven't clinched the playoffs spot yet,
so I don't want to. I don't want to say,
you know, in the playoffs for a fourth executive year,
but let's be real, it's gonna be wildly disappointing it
for some reason, they're not in the playoffs this year.
So it should be a four fourth straight playoff appearance
for the Orange and Blue. And I think that that
has gotten a lot of people's attention. And it's not

(01:41:21):
just a fourth straight playoff appearance, it's you know, fighting
atop the table. I mean, you know, listen, the first
year they get in, that's great, but then they won,
we're able to go on the road, pay off the upset,
and then had a tight game with Philadelphia. Andre Blake
had to make some big saves to keep it that way.
You know, then you win the Supporter Shield. And then
last year you're the three seed and you get upset,
but you're still, you know, a top four seed, and

(01:41:44):
I think that this team should be a top four
seed again this year. We'll see, you know, it's so tight.
I mean we're talking about you know, all the way
through the top six. Orlando is just eight points back
of Cincinnati and Miami, who they played twice. You know,
they're seven points back, but they have three games in hand.
Do you take care of business? And he's two against
Miami over the next two weeks. Then you know, those

(01:42:06):
games in hand aren't aren't so intimidating. But right now,
those just games in hand, they could they could be
right there with you. So I think it's shaping up
to be one of the best races in the Eastern
Conference in years. But it's crazy how you know, a
couple results for any of these teams when you talk
whatt CINCINNTI, Nashville, Philadelphia, Columbus, Miami, Orlando could flip a
team like Cincinnati or Nashville, who's one and two right

(01:42:29):
now to five or six, you know, ending a bad week,
good week, so on and so forth. So I think
this is shaping up to be one of the best
Eastern Conference races we've seen in quite a while. And hey,
it's good to be in the driver's seat for the moment.

Speaker 2 (01:42:45):
Yeah, before I let you go, talked about how they've
won four straight coming into this match. In the offense
and Vander and den K and the back line and
Miles back. Is it one thing specifically that's led to
the successor or is it just the collective consistency of
the group.

Speaker 35 (01:43:03):
Well, I think it's been the collective consistency of the group.

Speaker 8 (01:43:06):
And I mean, let's be honest. The heater that Avander
is on right now, you know.

Speaker 35 (01:43:11):
Having scored in in three consecutive games, he could he
could tie Brandon Basquez his record if he scores in
a fourth consecutive game. Brandon's Brandon's the only player to
have done that. So that would be awesome just to see.
And and he's, like I said at the beginning when
we're talking about him, like he's.

Speaker 4 (01:43:28):
So locked in right now.

Speaker 35 (01:43:29):
But I also think that you know, uh dn K
is as well, Kevin Denk and and he watches it.
I mean, shoot, he wants to be the leading scorer
and Evander wants to be a thing scored.

Speaker 8 (01:43:38):
So that's good. Go ahead of boys, keep four goals, right,
I love.

Speaker 35 (01:43:42):
It so no, I think, but as we've talked about
so often this year, so much of it, the tone
is often sent set by the defense.

Speaker 8 (01:43:52):
And if you can, you.

Speaker 35 (01:43:55):
Know, just make sure things are calm in the first
quarter of an hour, say, and that you're not seating
in goal and you're not chasing the game and and
kind of set the tone in that way. Then you're
kind of setting yourself up for success. You know, Columbus
for an example, a team and they don't allow a
lot of goals, but fourteen to twenty seven goals they've
allowed this year or in the first half an hour.

(01:44:15):
So I think if you're Cincinnati, you got to you
gotta come out in his match, and you know, listen,
set the tone with your defense. Don't give Columbus and
he looks early, but also be looking to pounce on
them and get that crowd juice up, get them that
juice going, because there'll be plenty of juice flowing at
the stadium. It's mostly bubbly beer, I think, But you know,

(01:44:36):
there's be a lot of people having a lot of
fun and you want that place to run.

Speaker 8 (01:44:40):
At its max and the roof to shake. Now I think,
you know, when you look at.

Speaker 35 (01:44:46):
It, it's been consistency all over and the right buttons
have been pushed by Pat Noonan, which which certainly has
helped the team this for match win streak.

Speaker 2 (01:44:57):
Last thing I just thought of the weather forecast could
be a little bit moist during the game. Is there
anything and Pat Newton can really do to help his
team prepare for that, or they're just used to it.
It's it's soccer, deal with it, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:45:10):
Guys, I mean it's it's funny.

Speaker 35 (01:45:11):
There was a stretch earlier this year, I want to
say April when it felt like we saw like four
or five straight matches played in some type of precipitation
and it was a lot colder than you.

Speaker 8 (01:45:23):
Know, different different types of conditions.

Speaker 35 (01:45:25):
But I think I think it was April where we
were joking and you know we meet with Pat a
match day. We were like, man, you know it's gonna
rain because it has the last four matches or something,
and if I mean, sure, sure's got it.

Speaker 8 (01:45:38):
It rained, you know, and and came down. So I
don't think there's much they can do. You know.

Speaker 35 (01:45:42):
You just hope, especially in a match like this, that
you don't get in any type of situation with a delay,
right with any type of severe weather where part of
the matches played, then they leave and the fans have
the uncertainty of when people coming back out and so
on and so forth like that. That's like, that's not
good for anybody. That's not good for the game. It's

(01:46:02):
not good for broadcasts, it's not good for the players.
I mean, it's not good. It's not good for the environment.
So hopefully, you know, it's nothing like that. It'll it
be rain. I hope not. I hope for a nice
you know, straight up even match. The guys like the
pitch to be a little wet. The ball will move
a little faster if that's the case. But yeah, you
don't want to be turned into some type of slop
faster or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (01:46:23):
Tommy G. I appreciate the time. We will be listening
this weekend. It's an orange out. Will you be wearing orange?
I think so Okay, Yeah, that's the plan.

Speaker 35 (01:46:33):
I haven't I haven't finalized my my fit yet.

Speaker 8 (01:46:37):
That's what the kids call it, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I haven't. I haven't finalized the fit. But yeah, there'll
be some orange for sure. It has to be some
orange out come.

Speaker 2 (01:46:45):
Yeah, it's an orange out. You have to do it.
All right, Tommy, thanks so much. We'll be listening. Have fun, man, Pare,
talk to you next week, all right.

Speaker 6 (01:46:51):
Talk.

Speaker 2 (01:46:52):
That is Tommy g Tom Glader, the voice of the
Orange of Blue. Yeah, it is a orange out at
the hell Is Real arrive this weekend TQL Stadium. According
to their wife. Their website, it says, bring the heat
as we face our fiercest rival, named after the iconic
hell Is Real billboard on the route between our two cities.

(01:47:12):
The hell Is Real derby is ingrained with intensity and tradition.
Seven thirty kickoff. You can hear it right here on
ESPN fifteen thirty, including extensive, extensive, I said, pregame coverage
between Tommy and the Boys. By the way, talking about Columbus,
they are seven to one and four at home, really good.

(01:47:36):
They are three, two and four on the road. That
is wins, losses, ties, three, two, and four on the road,
so they have not performed well. Hopefully TQL Stadium is
a tough place for them to perform this weekend. All right,
well try again. Can you tell me which pitcher surrendered

(01:47:57):
Matt McClain's first career hit? If you can, and you're
gonna win a pair of tickets to Upper Deck Golf.
That's when we come back. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Now you're chan Welcome back. Since e three sixty Austin
Elmore solo today, solo all next week as t Pike
is on vacation, and we've got a chance to give

(01:48:19):
away two tickets upper Deck Golf next weekend, Great American Ballpark.
We tried this the first time. Nobody seemed to know
the answer. I've given you time. It should be pretty easy.
Phone lines back open five point three seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. Our first caller during that break was none
other than Rob and Harrison. Hello, Rob, how are you good?

Speaker 4 (01:48:42):
How are you doing?

Speaker 2 (01:48:43):
I'm wonderful, Rob. Can you tell me which Colorado Rockies
pitcher surrendered the first career hit for Matt McClain. In
May of twenty twenty three, the Connor Seabolts Connor Seabold.
That is correct. Congratulations, Rob, you are the winner?

Speaker 5 (01:49:04):
Are you?

Speaker 2 (01:49:04):
Are you a big golfer?

Speaker 4 (01:49:05):
Rob?

Speaker 6 (01:49:07):
I am?

Speaker 15 (01:49:07):
I play.

Speaker 6 (01:49:08):
I play way more than I should.

Speaker 2 (01:49:09):
Okay, all right, are you good? Do you have a handicap?

Speaker 28 (01:49:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (01:49:13):
I'm about a five.

Speaker 2 (01:49:14):
Oh? Okay, all right. So you're gonna bring Great American
Ballpark to its knees, then, aren't you?

Speaker 8 (01:49:20):
I hope?

Speaker 2 (01:49:20):
So all right, Rob, Well, congratulations. Hold on, I'll get
to you in just a second.

Speaker 4 (01:49:25):
We'll get you.

Speaker 2 (01:49:26):
Yeah, We'll get your information and get you on our way.
I went back into the archives I found it. This
is what it sounded like. He's just flat out a
baseball player.

Speaker 5 (01:49:36):
I think you could put him anywhere on the field
of play and he's gonna be able to figure it
out and do well.

Speaker 2 (01:49:42):
Man, that is Matt McLean.

Speaker 5 (01:49:45):
Here's the two two and he smokes this under the
left center field gap, moving quickly that way is the
center fielder and McLean's.

Speaker 2 (01:49:54):
Heading for a second, and that's a double.

Speaker 6 (01:49:57):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:49:58):
I want to tell you all you need to know
about Matt McClain.

Speaker 5 (01:50:04):
What for most folks would be just a routine single round.
First look up to mom, and Dad, Oh no, he
put on the afterburners and he was heading on for second.
And that is the one out double. Everything you hear
about Matt McLain and read about him, all the descriptions
sound like a guy that would fit in perfectly with

(01:50:25):
this team.

Speaker 2 (01:50:25):
And that is why right there, that's why. A hustle
double for Matt McClain. His first career hit came off
of Connor Seabolt of the Colorado Rockies, Reds and Rockies. Tonight,
we'll also we'll talk more about that. We'll check in
on our Revivedfitnessystems dot com Pole question and phone lines
open for anything you want to talk about. I know

(01:50:46):
Mike in La has been waiting patiently. We'll talk to
him on the other side. This is since he three

not good enough. He dissects the local sports We're not
consistent and all.

Speaker 6 (01:51:01):
The way up.

Speaker 2 (01:51:22):
Since E three sixty carries on ESPN fifteen thirty, Boston Elmore.
Moments ago, former Red right hander Kevin Hurgant was designated
for assignment by the Atlanta Braves. Now you can continue
on with your day. Let's continue on with the show

(01:51:43):
and with phone calls. He's been waiting for forty one
minutes and twelve seconds. His name is Mike in La. Hi, Mike,
how are you?

Speaker 6 (01:51:51):
Hey? Alusten, thanks for letting me on.

Speaker 2 (01:51:53):
I appreciate it, but thanks for hanging on. What's on
your mind?

Speaker 6 (01:51:57):
A whole bunch of stuff. But my, but my many
questions are about the Bengals. If I can change please
direction towards towards the end of the what indulged me
from the uh the conjecture about Elie going to third
The only thing I worry about with that not a
bad idea. I mean, where ever the guy is, he's

(01:52:19):
going to be at first base, who cares where he's
going to be? Good center field. But if you put
in the clan of short a lot of those line
drives that Eli gets to, the clan ain't getting to
them range wise. The plane ain't getting to them arm wise.
The clan you know what I'm saying. So I but, but,
but what you're talking about is almost a desperation move

(01:52:41):
at this point, because third base we're screwed.

Speaker 2 (01:52:45):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's something they would
do this year or consider doing this year. I just
wonder if they would think about reassessing the defensive plan
going into the off season. It just depends who they
try to acquire, how the guys that could play third
actually look the rest of this season. I don't think
it's something that necessarily should happen right away or has

(01:53:08):
to happen. I just think it's like the Reds should
probably be a little bit more open to the idea
of moving those guys around.

Speaker 6 (01:53:16):
I know, because Marty's whenever I hear Marty on the
on our air show, and sometimes those little to those
little snips are good. Sometimes they're really weird, but that's
what makes it fun. But he's a big thing about
La playing centerfield. I think the story in the National
League before we get to football, are the Brewers.

Speaker 15 (01:53:39):
I mean, look at this team.

Speaker 6 (01:53:41):
Sorry, I am so sorry, awsin.

Speaker 2 (01:53:44):
No, that's a compliment to compare me to Mo.

Speaker 6 (01:53:47):
Yeah, okay, thank you bailed me out. But the Brewers
are truly a story. What are they? Twelve games over
five hundred, now, I mean, it's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (01:53:58):
Yeah, thirteen games over five under. Their average age is
twenty seven years old, and they are twenty fourth in
Major League Baseball in active payroll. To compare that to
the Reds, for example, the Reds are twenty first in
active payroll and they are a full year older than

(01:54:21):
the Brewers in average age, and the Brewers are thirteen
games over five hundred. The Reds are two the Brewers spent.
The Brewers have less money in their active payroll than
the Pirates and the Rockies. Wow, think about that. Think
about that. You want to talk about doing more.

Speaker 6 (01:54:41):
And you're blown. You're blowing.

Speaker 4 (01:54:42):
You're blowing.

Speaker 2 (01:54:43):
You think about doing more with less? That's crazy.

Speaker 6 (01:54:47):
That is crazy. So really, what we're looking at here,
before we go to the Bengals, we got to jump
the Cardinals or we got to jump to Padreis because
the other teams were not jumping. We're not jumping the Giants,
We're not jumping the mess I'm jumping the uh what
do we say.

Speaker 2 (01:55:06):
Mets, Yeah, Metts, Phillies, all those guys ahead of them, Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:55:11):
Yeah, Jays. The only two teams that can jump for
the Cards in the Padres. So there are four games
up on I think the Cardinals are four games up
on us and the Padres are five games up, so
it's achievable.

Speaker 8 (01:55:22):
It is achievable right now.

Speaker 2 (01:55:24):
Right now, the Reds are two games back of the Cardinals,
two and a half games back of the Padres.

Speaker 6 (01:55:34):
Card Yeah, yeah, I was looking at the at the
overall records. Okay, now that I've stuck my foot in
my mouth as usual, I got I got one thing.
I got to hit you with this trivia question because
it blew my mind today and it's current trivia. It's
not the old How many shutouts do you believe have

(01:55:55):
been thrown this year? Not by one guy, but by
a team in Major League Baseball? And it's the most
since nineteen thirty three.

Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
So the most team shutouts? Yes, oh, I know, team shutouts.
I'm trying to think of, like the teams that I
feel like have the best starting pitching Detroit.

Speaker 6 (01:56:25):
No, no, no, I'm sorry, I'm sorry to I didn't
mean the team. I meant the total amount of shutouts.
I'm sorry. I should have prepped the.

Speaker 2 (01:56:31):
Total amount of shutout wins that they.

Speaker 6 (01:56:33):
Have that that the whole league has this year.

Speaker 2 (01:56:37):
El oh, no, I have no idea. What's the number?

Speaker 6 (01:56:41):
Two hundred and eleven?

Speaker 2 (01:56:43):
Wow, two hundred and eleven games have resulted in a shutout?

Speaker 6 (01:56:49):
Yes, sir, Wow, it's just I mean that tells me
we're not nobody's really hitting the ball as well as
they could hit.

Speaker 2 (01:56:57):
The Yeah, I guess not.

Speaker 6 (01:57:00):
Wow, have you ever heard have you ever heard of
this pitcher named Bryce Joyce?

Speaker 2 (01:57:05):
It sounds familiar, Bryce Joyce.

Speaker 6 (01:57:08):
I don't know who he pitches for, but they were
talking about velocity with starting pitchers, and this guy last
year threw a pitch at one hundred and five point
six at the major league level. Wasn't in the minor leagues.
And then there's been five pitchers this year that have
thrown one hundred and two or one hundred and two

(01:57:29):
miles power or more for five or four consecutive hitters. So,
I mean, these guys are this is the problem. I
think Austin there, these guys are blowing their arms out right.
That's why we love Abbott because he's not doing that.

Speaker 2 (01:57:44):
Yeah, I mean, he's he's a true pitchers pitcher, more
of a finesse pitcher and less of a power pitcher.
And he does such a great job at changing speeds
and changing the perception of the ball that or I guess,
the depth of the ball in the way that he pitches,
especially the outside, that just fools hitters, especially with that changeup.
But yeah, you're right. I mean to the point where

(01:58:07):
you know, I heard doctor Krimchek say not that long
ago that some parents now are coming in and asking
if their child can have Tommy John surgery just to
get it out of the way and strengthen their arm.
Isn't that ridiculous. They don't even they don't even necessarily
need it, but they are asking to do it.

Speaker 6 (01:58:30):
Mommy and Daddy want to ride down arm.

Speaker 2 (01:58:33):
I guess so, man, I guess so.

Speaker 6 (01:58:35):
Now that's sick. You're right, that is sick, typical news
worthy stuff. You're your Expertiseangals KASICKI is KASICKI officially are
tied end because I love Tanner Hudson and I don't
know why he doesn't get more time.

Speaker 2 (01:58:55):
Yeah. I think Hudson took a little bit to gain
the trust of Joe Burrow and maybe of Zach Taylor,
especially after the fumble last year. In the New England
game is technically listed as the top tight end.

Speaker 4 (01:59:13):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:59:14):
And then I mean, I guess, but he's more of
a wide receiver as we all know. And then it's
Drew Sample and Tanner Hudson as far as like the
depth chart would say.

Speaker 6 (01:59:27):
I like Hudson, don't you know. I mean no, I mean,
the guy made one restinket. But over the last few
years I've liked his his his gumption basically and his
mess seems like a good, solid guy, low key, no problems.
Next question, Burton. What's gonna happen with Burton? Does anybody know?

Speaker 2 (01:59:46):
No, that's one of the big questions of this year.
And you know, it's been a very very quiet offseason
for Jermaine Burton, and quiet is good. There's been nothing
going on around him. Everyone says, he's constantly at the facility.
He's gotten into a routine. He just kind of looks
like a kid that it clicked with him of like,

(02:00:07):
oh crap, yeah, I gotta be an NFL football player
now if I want to make this work. And so
hopefully that's really what happened, and he comes into this
season ready to prepare and actually could add a dynamic
to the offense and being able to stretch the field.
And we saw it a couple of times last year's
most notably the Kansas City game where he caught a
long completion down the sideline that flipped the offense, flipped

(02:00:30):
the field for the offense in that game. So I
think he can be a huge part of this. It's
just once training camp happens. Is he there on time,
is he paying attention to his meetings, is he retaining
the changes to the offense and what he's supposed to do.
If so, I mean, just another weapon.

Speaker 6 (02:00:49):
Guy's the one that passibly wouldn't that be great? My
last question if you all indulgement on the offensive line.
I know everybody's tired to hear it, but who was
this Patrick guy? I don't know anything about this guy.
And could this Rivers guy sneak in and take a position?

Speaker 2 (02:01:07):
You know, I think Jalen Rivers was one of their
late draft picks out of the University of Miami. Yes,
I think he could. I mean, he's a huge dude,
he's very regimented. I think he's still got some athleticism
that he's got to work on and develop, and maybe
Scott Peters, the offensive line coach, will get something out
of him. But he's just a ginormous individual. He's got
experience playing tackle and guard. I think he could be

(02:01:30):
potentially one of those swing guys. Is Jalen Rivers, but
Lucas Patrick. He's been around. He's played one hundred games
in the NFL, almost one hundred and ten. Spend some
time with the Packers, spend some time with the Saints.
He's thirty one years old. He's just he's okay, like
he's nothing crazy, he's nothing special. He's started sixty four

(02:01:50):
games in the NFL, spent ten or started ten games
for the Saints last year, fifteen games for the Bears
the year before.

Speaker 6 (02:02:01):
So do you so, I know you sound, if I'm
not mistaken, you sound pretty bullish on the kid from Georgia.

Speaker 2 (02:02:08):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, I think if he's
everything that people have said about him, then you know
he picks up that that technique that Peters is teaching
and it's kind of that junkyard dog type of mentality,
then I think he could have some success. But it's
ultimately about does his technique meet his size and can he,
you know, be able to communicate adequately with Orlando Brown

(02:02:31):
Junior to his left, Ted Carris to his right, and
can he kind of hold his ground in the NFL?
Is going to be the big thing because I'm stright.
I don't remember off the top of my head, but
I want to say one of the criticisms of him
was him being a little bit undersized.

Speaker 6 (02:02:46):
Hm, he's over pounds.

Speaker 2 (02:02:49):
Oh yeah, no, no, no, that's wrong. I was wrong. I
was thinking of somebody else. I just looked it up.
He's six five, three hundred. Yeah, dude's gonna be fine.

Speaker 6 (02:02:56):
But still now right.

Speaker 2 (02:02:59):
Again, Yeah, I guess so three seventeen, So that is
I guess a little bit light for some of those dudes.

Speaker 6 (02:03:05):
Yeah, thanks Austin. I appreciate the time.

Speaker 2 (02:03:07):
But yeah, Mike, thanks, I appreciate you calling it.

Speaker 3 (02:03:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:03:10):
I did not know that Dylan Fairchild was that size.
I guess I've got to get better. Anyways, Yeah, the
offensive line. I was gonna talk more about this. We
just kind of ran out of time. But our Revivefitnessystems
dot Com poll question presented by coach PJ. Street and
Revivefitnessystems dot Com as currently constructed, which Bengals unit Do

(02:03:32):
you have more faith in the offensive line or the
defensive line? Seventy one percent say offensive line, twenty eight
percent say defensive line. I think both units will be better.
Will they be significantly better? Probably not, But I think
they'll be better. I just think the slope, the slippery

(02:03:54):
slope of slippery slope of struggle, I guess you could say,
is more on the offensive line, Like that could go,
That could go poorly quickly, As far as I'm concerned.
The defensive line I think has a higher ceiling this season.

a Friday version of The Moe Egger Show coming up
next from three to six. Hi, Mo, how are you Aunie?
I am doing well.

Speaker 3 (02:05:16):
I actually think the Bengals offensive line has a pretty
high ceiling.

Speaker 2 (02:05:19):
Okay, explain a pretty high ceiling.

Speaker 3 (02:05:22):
Now, ceiling is best case, right, So all I heard
last year was how good A Marius Mims was going
to be?

Speaker 2 (02:05:28):
All right? Do we not think that anymore?

Speaker 17 (02:05:31):
So?

Speaker 2 (02:05:33):
There's that.

Speaker 3 (02:05:33):
I think Orlando Brown's a good player, Think ORLANDA Brown's
a really good left tackle. I feel like that sort
of gets lost in the sauce, and I'm not entirely
sure why. And I'm among those who believes that Dylan
Fairchild can come in and play a more than competent guard.
And I think Ted Carris is going to benefit from
not having to clean up messes to his left and

(02:05:54):
to his right. I actually think the Bengals offensive line
has a chance to be pretty decent this year.

Speaker 2 (02:05:59):
I hear you on the Caris thing for sure, because
he was trying to put out a lot of fires.
I think that the Orlando Brown thing comes from been
a little bit banged up and people worrying a little
bit about his age. At least that's where I view it. Mims. Yeah,
I think he has the chance to be the best
and most consistent player on that offensive line. I just
think that there's there's gonna be some problems with them

(02:06:22):
gelling and kind of figuring it all out. I just
overall think the ceiling of the defensive the line is
higher because obviously, if Trey shows up, he can be
one of the best. And Shamar Stewart is just brimming
with potential. He is potentially going to be on the team.
Potentially not. But yeah, I don't know. It just keeps

(02:06:44):
me up at night. The offensive line, for whatever reason,
I have a bad feeling about it. Yeah, I don't
love you know, you and Tony have talked about this
a lot.

Speaker 3 (02:06:52):
I don't love seeing them rank thirty first, you know,
by publications that I think know what they're doing. But
I look at a lot, maybe less scientifically, I think
on the defensive line, I still don't know, man.

Speaker 2 (02:07:04):
I think TJ. Slayton was a good pickup. Are you
too well? You did a segment I thought him most
slept on Bengal. It was interesting.

Speaker 3 (02:07:13):
I did an interview in Milwaukee when the Reds played
the Brewers, and it was to talk about the Reds
and Brewers, and then at the end of guys like
we hate that you took TJ. Slayton, and I said,
like I turned the tables and I'm like, all right, well,
you know, tell me about TJ.

Speaker 2 (02:07:27):
Slayton.

Speaker 3 (02:07:28):
And they're like packers up front were awesome against the
run last year. This dude is really good. He's really
really good at that. Now you might wonder, okay, can
he get after the quarterback. He's really good though at
this one particular thing. Talked about all the intangibles and
so like, I'm all in. I I just don't know, man,
that I'm big on Chris Jenkins, but he hasn't played

(02:07:49):
a lot YEA certainly, you know, jury is still out
on the two three techniques they took last year. But
I think talking about for me the offensive line, I
just I'm a little bit more bullish there.

Speaker 28 (02:08:01):
Then.

Speaker 3 (02:08:01):
I think most are that is not a direct indictment
against the defensive line. I'm also excited to hear about
the strike technique with the new offensive.

Speaker 2 (02:08:08):
Yeah, baby. Next six months, was that the Mason Crosby
show that you went on? It was, yeah, yeah, they
that guy sent me a DM asking me to join
them join the show, right, And I didn't see it
until two hours later, and I said, hey, I'd love
to and he said, oh, sorry, we found somebody and
I click on the page Moegger All right.

Speaker 6 (02:08:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:08:29):
So I think Mason Crosby was surprised by my depth
of knowledge of his career, which was I said to him,
I hope this is the first time the Bengals have
played the Packers since twenty thirteen where the game doesn't
end on a Mason Crosby field goal. Yeah, And he's
because the last time they played him now he missed like.

Speaker 4 (02:08:50):
Two of them.

Speaker 3 (02:08:50):
Yeah yeah, that game was nuts overtime, and then he
made a field goal to beat him there in twenty seventeen.
So he's like, yeah, come to think of it, wow,
So you could have been the one that dropped that knowledge.
I could have I gotta be quicker on the trigger.

Speaker 2 (02:09:04):
What do you got coming up on the show this
weekend or today this weekend? I am, I am on Sunday.
I know I was gonna ask about that too.

Speaker 3 (02:09:13):
Yeah, we have the drummer from the Almond Brothers on
Sunday Morning. Sports soccer on on Sunday Morning. I'm pretty
excited for that. So the Reds have to sweep this
series against the Colorado Rockies. And if they do, what
are we going to grade the Reds in the first half?
What's if they're five over? Despite all the stuff we
have said about over the last couple of days, the

(02:09:35):
exasperation we have all felt. If they win this series
against Colorado and they're five over, is it mission accomplished
or glass half empty? We will discuss we are in
a different era of Bengals football. And I was thinking
about this when I was reading about the odds of
Zach Taylor being.

Speaker 2 (02:09:53):
The first coach to be fired. Yeah, which I.

Speaker 3 (02:09:55):
Think most of us agree is probably not gonna happen.
But I do think we have to consider the era
of Bengal football that we are in. I think sometimes
in life, if you run a business, if you run
a large entity with a lot of people who invest
in it. You have to listen to your customers. The
NCAA needs to do that. We'll spend some time on that.
We'll preview the Hell is Real Derby with the guy

(02:10:17):
who's gonna call it for MLS. He's in Passing Apple
TV Keith Costigan and our buddy Aaron Layton from Jess
Baseball dot com. You know the MLB draft is this
Weekend's right? Who do we want the Reds to take?
He's gonna tell us at three thirty three plus and
you're gonna be blown away by this. We've got tickets
to play Upper Deck Golf and GABP and tickets to
go see uh Blake Derek Bentley.

Speaker 2 (02:10:39):
Thank you, you're welcome, man, You're welcome.

Speaker 3 (02:10:41):
Derek's Dirks Bentley at River Bend a week from tonight.

Speaker 2 (02:10:46):
Are you gonna play Guess the Foot again? I saw
that return year. We're not gonna play Guess the Foot?
We are gonna play. Yeah, we are gonna play. We're
gonna do stupid trivia, Red's Rockies connections, and then we're
also gonna because you know, quarterback right season two quarterback,
everybody's talking quarterback. We're gonna we're gonna test our listener's
knowledge of Bengals and their history with quarterbacks. Oh boy, yeah,

(02:11:12):
good luck with that one. What are you gonna talk
about Sunday morning.

Speaker 3 (02:11:16):
Well, hopefully the Reds will have beat in the Rockies
a couple of times, right, yeah, and then we're looking
ahead to the big third game of the series where
they can sweep them. We're gonna do some UC football
Sunday morning. Yeah, yeah, that's gonna be. And then we
also have one of the ray kind of singers at
eleven and I think we got a guy. We got
a guy from the Oakridge Boys.

Speaker 2 (02:11:37):
Yeah. I've seen the Oakreage Boys before.

Speaker 3 (02:11:40):
They're awesome. Yeah, wow, very good. We have one of
Conway Twitty's backup singers. Fantastic, it could be huge. It
be awesome. Uh Mo, thank you so much, have a
great show, have a great Sunday. I'm trying to get
through the next three hours and you're asking me about Sunday.

Speaker 2 (02:11:57):
I know, man, see how prepared you are. All right,
that's Moegar, have fun, have a great weekend.

Speaker 40 (02:12:03):

Speaker 8 (02:12:03):

Speaker 4 (02:12:04):
