High School, and a couple otherthings. So Shan Clifford, Charlie Goldsmith,
(01:56):

overall seed Tennessee volunteers in NCAA Baseballaction. Before we get to anything else,
let me tell you that as wereview yesterday's top sports stories, is
brought to you by our friends atKLOUS Roofing, the roofing System of Cincinnati,
that trusted local roofing and ghutto company. Visit krssincy dot com. That's
(02:21):
KRSCINCEI with a y dot com,you know, Austin. I was thinking,
as I relate this song right hereto a Bengals game, Bengals touchdown.
Yes, that's what I when Ihear this. And so when I
heard that, it took me backto a dark place I was in about
ten twelve days ago, because Iwas thinking to myself, man, the
(02:45):
way the red season is unraveling,it's going to be a long time before
we get the Bengals season. Andwe might need Bengal season to happen soon
because the Reds were just unraveling. And now look ahead five straight wins.
Reds are mac dab in the middleof the NL Central their smack dab in
the middle of a wild card race, and they're starting to put the ball
(03:07):
or the bat on the ball alittle bit. Eight more runs, nine
hits Yesterday, four more two outRBIs and Elie de la Cruz home run
on the anniversary of which he wasbrought up to the big League's home run
that I believe the hardest hit byany Red this year with exit velocity,
insane. Hunter Green six plus inningsfor his fifth straight start. That's the
(03:29):
first time that's ever happened in hiscareer. That contract is looking better and
better and better with each and everystart. He went six and two thirds,
five hits, four runs, twowalks and eight strikeouts. We'll look
more at the Reds. David Belltalked a little bit about Graham Ashcraft.
Ashcraft, maybe we'll have some HunterGreen as well. Look ahead to tonight,
City Connect Friday, Firework Friday.Yes, it's a busy night,
(03:53):
busy weekend at the ballpark. Itis an incredibly busy homestand yeah for the
Reds is going to be there tonight. Sam Sam the Bald Eagle will be
at the Reds game. Excuse me? Yeah, no, I know you
get choked up thinking about it.I love Sam the bald Eagle. It's
my favorite time to go. Butyes, tonight obviously City Connect Friday,
(04:14):
Red Legs and the Cubs. I'msure there'll be a lot of Cubby fans
there. It's also Pride Night,as it is now Pride month. Wow,
we've got fireworks Friday. Wow.Ellie Day La Cruz bobblehead doll next
week? Wow? Did people stillcall it a bobblehead doll? I think
just a bob bobblehead. Yeah.Yeah, it's a There's a lot going
on this homestand I actually got thefull the full notes from it that we
(04:36):
can get into a little bit lateron. But it's gonna be a fun
time. Also, the Reds areplaying well, let's get after it.
Look ahead at the horizon. MaybeCees coming back soon, Marte coming back
soon. Yeah, we'll talk toCharlie Goldsmith about all that today. But
also, did you know tomorrow isa four to ten Saturday store, which
is the best time for Saturday gamesto start. I'm with four to ten,
(05:00):
let's go City Connect pennants coming upon Sunday Beautiful which Hunter Green Baseball
cards celebrating Luke Garrick Day three twoone Tuesdays gosh Ohio Cup on the horizon.
What a time to be down atthe old ball Orchard. We said
a couple days ago, Austin, get the five hundred by the end of
the end of the month. Theycould be at five hundred by the end
of the weekend. Listen, We'regonna take it one day. That's on
(05:21):
me at a time. That's onme, Anthony, that's on me.
Got to give a shout out,by the way to our buddy Kevin in
Northern Kentucky, who just posted atweet says, is there a better way
to enjoy since he three sixty?Because I sure don't know it. And
it's Kevin with a bag of skylinechilly Wow. He's feeling good, he's
(05:42):
feeling hungry. It's skyline time forKevin. It's skyline time for us.
Right, It's gonna be a goodday. I'm excited about. I'm excited
about every day, but I'm excitedtoday as well. We'll get phone calls
in just a couple of minutes aroundthe rest of the sports world really quick.
Dan Hurley in the LAS are meetingtoday, let me ask you this,
Austin, which one would you choose. He's got a good team,
(06:06):
probably a top five team coming back, a chance to three pete, which
is really hard to do. Alsohas a chance to coach in the NBA,
a chance to coach an iconic brandlike the Los Angeles Lakers. But
it's a Lebron that's near the endof his career. It's an Anthony Davis
that is struggling to stay healthy. You're just a guy. It might be
(06:28):
a team that you're kind of restrictedwith who you draft, whether you've got
a draft Brownie or not. There'snot a lot of young talent on the
Lakers roster. I know that wouldprobably go into some of it if you
had to pick which one are youtaking? Well, they also have earthquakes
out there in California. Not ahuge fan of those, but I've I'm
(06:48):
not a big fan of college basketballto be here with, so I'd take
the Lakers. Okay, I don'teven think it's close. If this is
if this is probably twenty five, twenty six other NBA teams, this isn't
even a conversation. Agreed, Butbecause it's the Lake Lakers, even though
they stink right now, he's flyingout there right now, or as some
(07:09):
of the kids say, flute out. Yep, he's getting fleued out to
go talk to Genie Buss and RobPolinka and all those people. So I
feel bad for Yukon, who's gotto try that happens. Yukon's got to
try to piece things together and playFlorida State. They're doing that right now.
In baseball Evansville, Tennessee at threeo'clock. West Virginia, North Carolina
and Kansas State Virginia all in actiontoday. Last night NBA Finals Game one
(07:34):
is bludgeoning the correct word. Thatwas brutal. That was a beatdown Grand
Canyon Mule. They were up Ithink thirty at one point in the first
half. Now I will give itthe Boss, or I'll give Dallas credit
Austin because at one point a thirdquarter they cut it to eight. Yeah,
and they got a rebound and Livelytraveled and then Boston goes on like
(07:56):
a quick ten oh run and thenit was out. Luca still dropped thirty.
But anytime Luca has one assist,Yep. The MAVs aren't gonna win
a lot of games. No,Kyrie wasn't great six of nineteen, just
twelve points. Look at this scoringfor Boston, Austin Tatum sixteen, Horford
ten, Holiday twelve, Derek Whitefifteen, Jalen Brown twenty two, and
(08:20):
a guy that hadn't played in tengames, Chris Stops Porzingis. Come on,
Stops had one of the best firsthalfs I've ever seen the guy play.
He was unbelievable offensively, defensively, block three shots, rebounded six times.
Porzingis was phenomenal. That Celtic teamthat played last night. No one
in the NBA is beating him, especially because I think they made ten or
(08:43):
eleven threes in the first half. Now, they finished sixteen to forty two,
but that's still thirty eight percent comparedto just twenty six percent behind the
three point line for the Dallas Mavericks. But I'll say this, Austin,
if you listen to Moeger and youlisten to Locks of the Night going into
this, you liked the Dallas Mavericksto win the series. Guess what last
(09:05):
night did for you? Made youa whole bunch of money. Oh yeah,
because you can now bet Dallas, which is what Moe said yesterday.
Wait until you see what game onehappens. If you look historically under Jason
Kidd, they are terrible in gameones. That's what they do. Jason
Kidd is going to adjust and nowthe value is phenomenal if you like Dallas
to win the series. This seriesI still think is far from over.
(09:28):
Kyrie is gonna play better. Althoughdid you hear the SoundBite Austin of Kyrie
after the game. It wasn't great. So he showed up with a basketball
walking through like security yesterday, andafter they just got beat down one oh
seven to eighty nine, he talkedabout good stuff like, hey, it's
the Finals. Ups and downs aregonna happen. We're bet the two last
(09:50):
teams standing. You got to appreciatethat my shot felt good tonight, hit
the back rim on, a couplethings you want to hear. And then
he said, to be honest,I thought it was gonna be a little
louder in here. Now he's stirringthe beast that is the TD Garden.
So get ready for that Game twoon Sunday in the NBA Finals, Game
(10:11):
one of the Stanley Cup playoffs istomorrow night of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Oilers and Panthers, and shout outAustin to the women's softball champion Oklahoma Sooners,
who yesterday won their fourth straight softballchampionship. That's insane. And they
were like there were one game awayfrom being knocked out by Florida. They
(10:33):
were like two outs away from beingknocked out by Florida. Rallied to four
Sextras on a walk off in thatthen go and make quick work of the
Texas Longhorns in another chapter to thoserivalries, the rivalry between those two schools.
So yeah, congrats to Oklahoma shortsweet and just put another one on
a board. Put it on ayes, God bless hawk Carrolson. Also,
(10:58):
something happened yesterday and I don't thinkunless you follow along, you really
understand the equivalent of what USA cricketdid yesterday. Pakistan is like a national
powerhouse in cricket global globe. I'msorry, global powerhouse and US one Ben
(11:26):
Baby, who covers the Bengals forESPN. I was following along with Ben
yesterday. He said he's a bigcricket yan. He is always following along
to cricket he said, USA essentiallyneeded a home run and a double on
two of the last three balls toforce overtime against one of the better countries
in the world. They forced overtimeon the last ball. Pakistan crumbled in
overtime and Team USA got to win. I think he said it was equivalent
(11:52):
Todad and Tobago. Yes, beatingGermany. Beating Germany the World World Cup
match, which is just crazy tothink about that. If you know anything
about global or international soccer, youknow that's a big deal. That's funny
now. And it was after aweek of baseball fans in the United States
(12:13):
defending baseball and saying it's a moredifficult sport than cricket. Those two sides
were butting heads all over social mediafor the last right, and then for
the Americans to go and beat Pakistanat essentially their own game. It's I'm
not going to try to pronounce thefull name one of Team USA's better players.
(12:35):
Their top player's last name is Netravolker. Okay, so he is one
of the better players, but ifyou look on his LinkedIn, he doesn't
even meant he's the principal engineer atOracle. Oh, that's his job and
he's a principal engineer at Oracle.Right, he's probably making but he is
literally enough money to field his owncricket team. He is literally in the
(13:00):
history books one of the biggest upsetin sports history. Probably head back to
oor Coulon, back to the normallife. Yeah, shout out to Team
US in San Francisco. That wouldsuck. The Red, the White,
and the Blue. Don't ever countthis country out of anything, all right.
With that being said, Like Isaid, we've got so much to
(13:20):
get to today, I want tomake sure we have time to get into
some of our callers. We'll dothat when we come back. I be
National Donut Day, but i'd beNational Donut Day. What's your favorite donut?
All of them? Good answer? It's hard to beat a good long
John by the way. What yep, shout out this is? This is
shout out by the way buck EyeDonuts in Columbus. You said it's hard
(13:43):
to beat a what it's hard tobeat a good Oh? I didn't hear
what I said till just now.Shout out Buck Eye Donuts. Hard to
beat those good ones. It's thebest. I'll take a We'll get a
couple of phone calls going on,and Sean Cliffer is gonna enjoy at twelve
(14:05):
thirty since E three sixty a serviceof Style on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati
Sports Station, Lowegger. There wassome pooling in the team last night when
it comes to sports, those things. He's got something to say for,
just natural byproducts and plenty of it. A poor play Loeger today at three
on ESPN fifteen thirty. Hey,hey, Alexa, what's going on in
(14:28):
baseball? Getting ESPN fifteen thirty fromiHeartRadio. Nobody out first and second speed
on the base pass. Oh itgot this one deep and gone three to
two. Reds. Oh my goodness, Hello Ellie. A bullet out of
(14:50):
right field on the first pitch fromhobvier asade. Oh as they say in
that bag out, don't let theReds get hi. That ball was smoking.
Don't let the Reds get hot.Don't let Ellie get hot. Hardest
hit ball of the season from aCincinnati Red that left the ballpark quickly.
It also gave the Reds a threeto two lead, which makes that Austin
(15:11):
Our chance to review the power playerof yesterday's game, Brought to you by
Cincinnati tax resolution powered by Toave Shelton. That's Elie Day La Cruz, have
no fear. Toave is here. You ain't kidding, You ain't kidding.
Uh. Sean Clifford is going tojoin us in just a couple of minutes,
which means we have a small windowhere to get a couple of phone
(15:31):
calls. Mark was calling in beforethe show even started today. Let's hear
it, Mark, what's up?You're batting lead off today? That's the
way I like it. That's theway it should be. So you know,
you know, I'm a John ofthe India advocates, you know how
I like off. That's it,except he won't lead off one more time.
He's in that eight hole. Yeah, unfortunately, and he's hitting down
(15:54):
there, Oh boy, he is. You're a reason to keep him down
man. So, but Mark, has this been tough for you that you
have been able to watch any ofthese games while the Reds have turned things
around? Well? Well, wellyes and no. I mean it's it
hasn't been tough because they've been winning. But since they got Freedom back,
(16:15):
I think I'm on. Okay, that's fair because because you remember I said
between Freedom and India you know, they can flip flop them, you know,
if if it's a lefty or rightypitcher. You know, that's that's
how I feel's back, you know, So okay, you know then I
can I can watch the long aslong as Will Benson ain't that leaders,
(16:41):
you know, But let me getright to my point last night. You
know, you remember I made theirstatement that every Dady crew should be that.
And third, going forward, Ithink they make a mistake if they
keep them back. And second becauseafter what I saw last night, you
know, kind of was my point. The first two guys get on,
(17:03):
you can't pitch around him. Atthat point, you're gonna have to give
him a pitch. And he sawwhat he did with the he saw what
he did with it. Yeah.I do think though, with with Freedom
in front and Candelario behind him,I think that is enough support, enough
security that they I mean, thelast thing you want to do if Freedom
gets on is is pitch around Elliebecause if he gets on, he's gonna
(17:25):
wreak all kinds of havoc. Andyou've got Candelario and Steer coming up behind
him. I don't mind him inthe two hole right now, just because
of the value that he provides whenhe does get on base. Yeah,
yeah, you can look at itthat way. But I like him in
the three hole because if India andFriedo get on, then we go.
We'll see a lot more of that. Yeah, what we saw last night
(17:47):
and see me. I want tosee a lot more of that. I
want to take advantage of his powerdrafting runs in. But you know,
that's an opinion for another day.I think we they pretty much got a
set line up now with with whatthe players that they have available. When
it's a lefty and a righty pitching, you pretty much know what the lineup
(18:08):
is. You pretty much know whatpart of the lineup guys are gonna be
hitting at. And I think that'sgot a lot to do with you know,
they hitting hitting starting to come around. So for some reason, every
year since David Bell has been themanager, and I even saw it with
Dusty, they got to screw aroundwith the lineup for the first couple of
(18:29):
months before they come up with awith a set lineup. I noticed that
every every year it is like that. I I feel like the consistency now
with the boding orders does help thisteam's offense, which has been much better
over the last week. I agreewith that. Okay, let me get
to let me make a Bengals point. I heard y'all ranking you know the
(18:52):
positions and coaches yesterday, you know, for running back minees is Corey Dillon,
and then as far as coach is, I mean you got to put
Paul Brown number one, but numbertwo output for as great. Yeah,
no, I don't think you cango wrong with any of that. Mark.
We got to get to a break. We got to get to Sean
Clifford. I appreciate your call asalways, man, Thank you. All
(19:15):
right, Yes, sir, Jeff, Mike, we'll get to your calls
at the end of this hour,if that's possible, because we have a
little bit of a window here whereSean is available. So we're going to
get to Sean Clifford when we getback our number one since he three p
sixty A service of Skyline Chili onESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Hey
Alexa, Who's gonna win it all? Getting ESPN is fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.
(19:41):
Excuse me, hey Alexa, what'sgoing on in baseball? Getting ESPN
is fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio. Allright, Welcome back SINT three six ESPN
(20:02):
fifteen thirty at Cincinnati Sports Station. We're a service of our good friends at
Skyline Chili, where anytime you're feelinggood and hungry, it is always Skyline
time. I want to get toour first guest of the day today,
really does not need an introduction, especially here in the Cincinnati area. Had
the chance to grow up working witha little bit watching his career at Saint
(20:23):
X continue to take off. Iwent from st X to Penn State.
Now is with the Green Bay Packersand doing so many good things on and
off the field as well, andgracious enough with a couple of minutes for
us here today Sean Clifford is joiningus. Sean, what's going on?
Man? How are you not muchup here at Green Bay. It's enjoying
a little bit of summer weather. It's a little different than the typical Green
(20:45):
Bay cold, but it's been enjoyable. You. You have so many good
things going on Sean, both asa quarterback in the National Football League and
off the field as well. Andone of the main things I want to
hit on here is what you're goingto be doing and uh at Saint Xavier
High School and uh, in justa couple of weeks, you've got the
Clifford X Factor Camp. This isa camp that is free for kids to
(21:07):
sign up for, but the registrationis closing on Sunday. Talk a little
bit about why it was important toyou to do the camp and what to
expect at the camp as well.Yeah, I mean, just the opportunity,
obviously to give back to a communitythat has given me so much and
my brother. Uh, you know, we've been putting in a great position
because of Saint Zavier High School, because of the people around the Cincinnati,
(21:32):
Cincinnati area. So just being ableto give back to the kids. You
know, those fifth the eighth graderslast year were fantastic. So looking to
get back on the field go roundtwo, second annual and uh, looking
to do it over and over andover again. Uh. You can find
uh more information at limitlessnil dot comslash camps. Talk to me as well,
(21:55):
a little bit about what you're doingwith limitless and in today's world of
niall the ever changing world that itis. Tell me what limitless is and
obviously why you were inspired to startthat as well. Yeah, for sure,
it really came down to the factof the matter that I wanted to
step into the game help other athletesfigure out what this whole name image and
(22:15):
liken it. Ever since July firstpoint twenty one, legislation changed, and
I just wanted to be one ofthe first ones to take a shot at
it. So it's really a creativeagency based off of helping other student athletes
because we all have face the sameproblems, whether it be men's sports,
women's sports, you know, football, basketball, softball, it does not
(22:37):
matter. There's a bunch of bunchof issues pressing in college sports, and
I just wanted to take a stabat it. And it's been a lot
of fun. So being able todevelop a company with the likes of people
like Anas Hawkins, a Molar grad. I never thought I'd be working with
a guy from Molar, but hey, look at us now. You know
in the world of nil that you'retalking about, how much is it it
(23:00):
just getting the information to these athletes, and how important and critical to come
from a former player as well. It's one thing to send into meeting as
athletes and hear that, but comingfrom a player who's sat in those meeting
rooms, how important is that andjust the knowledge to get to these athletes
that maybe they fully don't grasp everythingto this point with name, image and
likeness. Yeah, information is key. The more you know, the better,
(23:25):
And that's really what it's all about, is just providing kids with the
information to make sure that they're monetizingat the highest level. Whether that be
bilanthropy work, whether it be theirown pockets, it doesn't really matter.
I just want to make sure thatevery single player has a fair shape and
when they get to college, they'reable to really convert on whatever they want
(23:45):
to do, whether it be buildinga business like me, whether it be
doing some deals with some companies,or just making networking connections that could potentially
help them in the future. There'sa bunch of different ways that name,
image, ofteness has helped shape collegesports, and now it's about just putting
that in front of them. Shana, I would be remissed with you being
in Green Bay. We often talkon this show about obviously the quarterback position
(24:10):
and coaching. You have the opportunityto learn from a guy like Matt Lafleur,
what has he meant to you toyour development and just being able to
pick his brain on a daily basis. How crucial has that been for your
growth? It's been night and day. I mean the fact that I get
to learn from the likes of peoplelike Matt Laffler, people who have came
(24:33):
through the facility, like Brett Parr, Aaron Rodgers, our quarterback coach,
Tom Clumb's he coached both of themand now is coaching Jordan Love at the
highest level. And it's just beenso impressive. I've learned so much,
been able to develop myself as aquarterback, not only on the field,
but off the field. Just watchingthe film back of how Aaron played,
how Jordan played this year, youreally get to add some things to your
(24:56):
own toolbox and I just really lookingforward to doing that year two. From
a preseason standpoint, we talk alot as we cover Bengals training camp here
in Cincinnati. How different is theapproach for you in the preseason knowing that
you have Jordan Love on that roster. How do you approach the preseason and
(25:18):
what have you been able to gainfrom the preseason and the amount of reps
you're able to get. Yeah, reps come to you and far between.
You know, especially as a backupquarterbacks, You've got to take every single
rep like it's the super Bowl becauseyou're really preparing for that time. You
never know when your time is goingto come, so you just have to
(25:38):
be prepared. It's really that artof waiting in the in the shadows to
make sure that you are ready forwhenever the team calls upon you. So
that's really what this preseason has been. It's been it's been enhancing my own
craft, being able to work onsome things that I wanted to from last
season and honestly all the way backto my college career, just continuing to
(25:59):
really sharpen that knife and be ableto add a bunch of different things to
my own game so that way, whenever that is, I'm ready. And
and really that's what the preseason isgonna be all about for me, Jordan
taking a step back, being ableto kind of go into year two as
the starter, not going to betaking as many reps. So I'm super
excited to get those reps game, those game that experience in real time games,
(26:21):
and I don't know if any ofthem will be more fun than my
first one in Cincinnati, my hometown, but it'll be a fun, fun
preseason This year, I have toask because you just mentioned it. Green
Bay comes in preseason game, You'replaying in Cincinnati, in front of so
many family and friends, you throwfor over two hundred yards, you had
a touchdown that moment for you?How important, how enjoyable I don't even
(26:47):
know you can put into words, but being able to play in front of
so many influential people for you righthere in Cincinnati, and to go out
and play well at the same time, Yes, it was special. It
really was just the fact that mybrother and I I think back to all
those times the week. I mean, that's one of my best friends in
the world, my best friend inthe world, to be exact, And
really I'm thinking back to all thetimes that we would watch Bengals teams,
(27:10):
whether that be at home or theseason tickets that my parents got us my
senior year, his eighth grade year. We just bonded so many times over
the Cincinnati Bengals. So being ableto walk out on the field play against
the Orange and Black, I meanit was really really cool. Spending a
few more minutes here with Sean Clifford. His youth camp coming up June twenty
(27:33):
third. Registration is going to closeon Sunday. We'll get back to the
camp in just a second. Youmentioned reps, and what I don't think
is realized at any level, highschool, college of the NFL from a
backup quarterback role is if you areput into a game, no one in
the stands is thinking, well, you know what, he probably didn't get
(27:53):
as many reps during the week,so let's take it easy. You're expected
to go in and perform at thesame level. Talk a little bit about
the challenges of a backup. Wesaw it in Jake Browning here in Cincinnati,
who had some success last year andfilling in for Joe Burrow. But
the struggles and the hardships of beinga backup when you don't get as many
physical reps but still expected to playat the same level. Yeah, there's
(28:18):
a lot of beauty in it becausereally you're not taking many, if any
reps throughout the week because there's solittle amount of time to be able to
prepare for those specific reps in practice. So really, at the end of
the day, it's about being inyour playbooks, studying on a day to
day basis, having a very verystricter team to make sure that it doesn't
(28:41):
matter when you're called in, whetherit be the first game of the season,
the last game, or if you'rejust never, it doesn't really matter
because they're going to expect the sameoutput as you would be if you were
the true starter. So for me, it's about just preparing that way,
preparing like the starter every single day, acting that way around teammates, making
sure that you know whatever Jordan needs, I am right there for him,
(29:03):
and then just learning, growing, pushing each other, competing with each other.
That's what the game's all about. And it's just been an absolute blast.
Our quarterback room is fantastic. I'mlooking forward to your two here.
When you mentioned Jordan Love, Iknow you guys are close. How exciting
is it for you to also watchalong with his growth and to be an
(29:25):
integral part of that as well, based on what you're seeing on the sidelines
that can help him during the game, what you're doing during the week.
To see a guy that you're closeto have the success that he did last
year, it has to be veryfulfilling on your end as well. Yeah,
it's an amazing experience. It's avery unique experience because you know,
you pour so much time and energythroughout the year into really what boils down
(29:48):
to seventeen games. So for mebeing able to watch Jordan's development, you
know, one of my best buddiesat this point, I'm really excited to
watch out he grows in New Yeartwo. You know, we had some
ups and downs early, but mandid he come on in the later end
and we really made a run.So that's where our fuel of the fires.
(30:10):
You know, we know what wehave in our building. We know
that we have a strong connection internallyand a lot of talent, and that
boils down to really just executing onSunday. So we're excited to get back
out there, but you know, there's a lot of work to be done
before week one. Sean, youmentioned the camp coming up, your your
Clifford X Factor camp with you andyour brother. It's going to be held
(30:32):
at Saint Xavier High School on Junetwenty third, from ten to one.
When you think of Cincinnati high schoolfootball, when you think of competition,
I look at a school like Saintx who's had so many quarterbacks go on
to play college football. You reallyget an understanding early on about competition,
even at the high school level. How much does what you went through in
(30:55):
high school and the competitive level thatfootball is here in Cincinnati. Body help
you along your journey at Penn State, continue to help you with the Green
Bay Packers as well. Yeah,it's all about mindset. I mean,
the Cincinnati way is blue collar. It's it's all about hard nos football and
you really learn how to develop yourselfearly and often especially to play place Saint
(31:18):
Davior. Super blessed to have comeout of that that that high school always
talk about, you know, theBomber Way through and through, just because
really, when I look back,I thank all my teammates for putting myself
in the position that I am today. You know, I wouldn't be here
without every single one of those teamsthat I really got to learn from and
(31:40):
and even the guys who you know, didn't make it to college or the
NFL. You know, it's justa it's been a blessing to be able
to represent the Bombers at the highestlevel of playing football, just because I
know all the blood, sweat andtears that went into those morning workouts,
those late nights studying, and thenreally you know those Friday lights, which
at the end of the day isthe most pure form of football, So
(32:05):
really miss it. Excited to getback to the camp and really give back
to the community because really, whenit boils down to it, those camps
that I used to go to whenI was a kid, whether that be
a Bengals player, whether that bea bear Cat, that's what really shaped
me into the man I am today, and I appreciate every single opportunity that
my parents put me in to beable to now play at the highest level.
(32:30):
From an age standpoint, for thoselistening that that do want to be
a part of the camp, isthere an age restriction? How many different
ages are you going to be doing? I know this is a free camp,
but the easiest way for them tofollow along and to get signed up
for the camp as registration is closingon Sunday. Yeah, just go ahead
visit our website at lamois I lI've posted on my social media so you
(32:52):
can check it out on Instagram orTwitter there. But really, at the
end of the day, it's fiftheighth grade. Really looking forward to to
give him back. We had aton of campers last year over I think
it was over one hundred and fiftylast year, so we're looking uh to
put on a really exciting show. We'll have some special guests as well,
So yeah, pull up, it'sfree, it'll be exciting and uh looking
(33:15):
to get better. Sean. Thisis this is awesome stuff limitless nil dot
com. You can find the campsection there. You can RSVP right there.
Awesome. Thank thank you for givingus some time today. Thank you
for continuing to pour back into thecommunity. It's so important as Cincinnati.
You mentioned the blue collar mentality asCincinnati continues to grow, but to use
(33:37):
your platform in such a positive wayit is. It's certainly appreciated, Cincinnati,
and we thank you for your timeand obviously the congratulations and uh wish
you nothing but more continued success alongthe way. Buddy, oh man,
I really appreciate it. Thank youfor having me and looking forward to getting
back to the Sincie in a coupleof weeks, Sean. Awesome stuff.
(33:59):
Man. To Sean, before welet you go, I gotta ask you
coming back to Cincinnati, what's yourwhat's your skyline order? Oh, that's
got to be the first place tostop, right, It's automatic. My
brother and I will be on atthe skyline right next to three Chief Tony's
plane. We got to get thechili, the chili ranch on the side,
(34:19):
big big thing of cheefe fries.Yeah, it'll it'll be it'll be
a party. What do you do? You preach the gospel of Skyline Chili
to the packer locker room every singleday. When when she first visited Cincinnati,
I brought I brought her to Skyline, of course, had to.
That was our first date in Cincy. And uh, she wasn't a fan
(34:42):
at first. But I'm telling you, just give her some time. Just
give her some time. It's anacquired tase date. That's a development to
keep an eye on. First dateto Cincinnati. What what are you able
to keep track? Like? Doyou follow along? Reds are in the
middle of a five game winning streak. What are some other things when you
get back to Cincinnati you want tomake or to cross off the list?
Oh, I'm always just trying tosee my boys, you know, all
(35:04):
my high school friends. Who reallyyou know, I test all my success
too. At the end of theday. That's always number one. Skylinees
number two of course. And thenreally whenever whenever I can, I've been
I've been trying to get back toa Bomber game because there's nothing like those
Friday night lights, especially at SaintX. So really excited. Hopefully maybe
(35:25):
this year be able to get backessentially during the bye week, but we'll
see Sean. Awesome stuff man.Look forward to talking to you and follow
along with everything he got going on. Awesome. Thank you guys. Yes,
sir, there he is Sean Cliffordsat X, Penn State. That's
great now of the Green Bay Packersdoing really good things here in Cincinnati,
the Clifford X Factor Camp. It'shappened in June twenty third, ten am
(35:49):
to one pm right there at SexHigh School. I just I just imagined
him going around the packers locker room. Yep, you know, excuse me.
Do you have a few minutes totalk about a three way from the
Skyline ship? Would you mind ifI bend your ear about or when they
came into town? Yeah? Washe getting it delivered to the hotel?
Oh? Yeah, that's good question. Unbelievable good stuff though limitless nil dot
(36:09):
com. You're probably sneaking out afterhours. You want to talk about a
guy that's coming out going on sowell, that's right. He went to
Skyline, a Dyeline fix man. He's got his own company he's back up
in the I mean this guy that'sgot his stuff together, he really does.
Sean Clifford, great stuff. Appreciatehis time. We got a break.
We might just randomly call him duringthe season. Yep, just see,
(36:30):
Hey Sean, what's going on?Hey Sean? Hell shut it up?
What's going on with Jordan Love,Matt Lafleur, so much stuff?
All right, let's take a break. We'll wrap up our number one when
we get back. Since He threeto sixty, a service of Skyline Chili
on ESPN fifteen thirty ESPN fifteen Welcomeback, since he three sixty. Thanks
(36:52):
the Skyline Chili. Thanks to SeanClifford for giving us a few minutes.
They're awesome stuff. As we rollalong on this Friday, already an electric
start. We've got Charlie Goldsmith injust a few minutes, which means we've
got at least we gotta we gottaask Charlie about something. Have you seen
this development regarding Joe Burrow and Madden? Ye? Not happy? There is
(37:15):
a not happy. It's him right, there's a The Madden cover reveal is
coming out on the eleventh, whichis four days from now. It's got
to him, and every year thereis a belief that there is a Madden
curse, and there's a lot toback that up about the way a player
performs, or a player gets hurt, or whatever it might be. I
(37:36):
don't like this. Today they releaseda teaser of the reveal, and I'm
gonna let you listen and tell me. Now, you can see orange lighting
in this reveal. Tell me ifthis sounds like Joe Burrow to you a
sports it's in the game. That'shim, right, I think that's him.
(37:58):
That's him. A little chuck here, Yeah, that's got to be
I think that's Joe Burt. That'sgot to be him. Now some have
said he's been banged up in thepast. Maybe this can work in the
opposite direction, the reverse curse, the reverse curse. Okay, I don't
like this at all. We're goingto play that to start our segment with
Charlie. And Charlie we know isa big Madden guy. We're gonna get
(38:21):
his immediate reaction. I'm concerned. We've got a minute here, Let's take
another phone call. Have that queuedup for Charlie place? I will,
yes, Jeff, what's up man? Happy Friday? Gents, Do you
guys really care about video game stuff? Yes, the Madden Curse. Not
a fan. There's a lot ofdata behind the Madden Curse. Jeff,
Okay, I'm just not a gamer, so I have no idea. So
(38:45):
I'll leave that to you guys. One thing you guys do know about him?
Off to see mister Stapleton tonight.Oh, Jeff, I messed up.
He's in Columbus on July nineteenth, and I am getting on a flight
going down to Georgia that day,and I totally messed up. I should
have pushed it back a day.The set list last night was If I
(39:06):
could have written out the set listfrom last night, that would have been
the one that they played. Soit's gonna be like eighty two. There's
not a cloud in the sky heretoday. I can't wait. Where's he
at? Where's he going to be? It's a place called Jiffy Loube live
out about fifteen miles from my house. It's kind of a version of our
River Bend on the most heavily traffichighway in the United States. Get there
(39:29):
early and enjoy a few battle.I got three telephone calls saying the gates
open at three o'clock. It's aFriday of a travel weekend. Get every
I've only gone to this place likefour times to see Dead Company, into
see Stapleton because the traffic is.You know, people in Cincinnati don't realize
(39:50):
how good they have it on thingslike going to pay Corps and going to
Great American and it's so easy toget in and out of those places.
That doesn't happen everywhere all sadden,But I'm looking forward to it definitely.
All right, casual NBA fan.I turn on last night, I see
another wizard's cast off for zingis justgoing berserk, of course, and then
(40:13):
Tony am I does Jalen Brown nothave a left hand? He does not,
and he still dominates. It's crazy, Okay, I cannot go left.
I needed you to confirm that becauseI didn't watch very much. But
I'm like, wait a minute, there's a guy in the NBA with out
a left hand. How does thathappen? Yep, that's it. Tony
got crossed over by a guy withone hand in high school. I think
(40:36):
that's a true story. Well,and uh, let's hope we have a
good weekend. I think we're kindof on the Old King's Island Racer of
Cincinnati Sports and we are the redsuck. Ellie's got to get demoted.
Ellie's back. We're going to winthe division. M VP. Joe didn't
throw a practice forget about the wholeseason there. He didn't throw it.
(41:00):
He didn't throw the warehouse. Yes, the mad cover Madrew Madden curse,
and it exactly exactly. You guyshave a great weekend yourself. Thank you?
All right? Yep, And that'stough because Jeff literally just called to
rub it in that he's going tosee state he did, you know,
and you know I don't blame himfor it. Unbelievable, I will do
(41:21):
it. What a flex. Bythe way, shout out the Hunter Green
last night. Uh, this kindof buried. We forgot this four hundredth
career strikeout, Yes already for HuntingGreen. Awesome stuff. We've got to
get to our break because Charlie Goldsmithis waiting for us at the top of
our number two. Since he's staringin his phone right now, waiting on
us a service of Skyline Chili onESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Look
(41:46):
at your cup holder, it's thissincey Shirts since he three sixty about Cincinnati

All Day This is ESPN fifteen thirtyCincinnati sports station song got up with Charles.
(42:23):

here at the top of the secondhour each and every Friday, Charlie Goldsmith
joining us. Now, Charlie, what's up? How are you doing?
Tony? Charlie not gonna lie alittle nerve us a little bit uneasy.
I know you've probably seen this bynow, but I want Austin to play
(43:05):
this little audio for you, andI want to tell I want to get
your opinion if there's any level ofconcern. Austin, can we get this
audio? Hey? Sports, it'sin the game, Charlie. Is that
Joe Burrow hinting the Madden release cover? And if so, are we concerned?
(43:27):
I think it's Joe. Oh No, I think it. I think
it worried. It matters less ifwe care about the Madden curse. I'm
very curious. Clearly Joe isn't asconcerned about the Madden curse. You know,
Burrow is a guy who broke aplayoff throughout the last at a long
time. I think Burrow is aguy who's confident staring the curse down in
the Facebook. My theory on thisis, I think there's been too many
quarterbacks on the cover recently. Ithink that this isn't the right timing for
(43:51):
Burrow. I think I'll have abetter chance in terms of what it would
make sense for Madden to make himthe cover athlete. I think the timing
is perfect for, you know,a receiver in like five years a Jefferson
Chase co cover, is my theory. Some of my favorite Madden covers have
been two guys on it. PalamoloumFitzgerald. You know, Brady and Mahomes.
(44:12):
We're both they're both quarterbacks. ButI think some of the coolest things
they do when they put guys togetherlike that. Maybe Burrow is an East
Fragg that his two most famous receivershe's played with the cover. I'll take
that. I love it. See, Charlie's always able to spin it in
a positive for us. Now werehere, I would say this, Justin
Jefferson just got paid. Joe Burrowis the highest paid quarterback. Justin Jefferson's
(44:37):
the highest paid non quarterback. Whatif they are the duo on the cover.
I'd be fine with that as well. I think it's a little bit
less of a connection. Obviously theyplayed together and they started at LSU.
I think Jamar and Jefferson just makesso much more scent as a parent.
Like they do commercials together, theydo all this stuff together. Like we
(44:58):
haven't seen the Burrow Jeffer pairing inthe same way we constantly see the Chase
Jefferson pair. All right, Charlie, let's talk about the red hot Cincinnati
Reds, winners of five in arow. They've got themselves right back in
the middle of the NL Central. They're right in the middle of the wildcard
race. It's crazy the difference thatjust a week or two can make.
Also the difference that that can makewith a guy like Ellie Day La Cruz.
(45:21):
You highlighted this on your social mediatoday. The high points of Ellie's
season, and is there a wayto predict those stretches or find ways when
he finds that rhythm. What isit about these stretches that you see different
about Ellie da la Cruz. Well, first, I was going to tell
a story that I mentioned in thatvideo you referenced on social media. Batting
(45:43):
practice yesterday maybe the best batting practiceI've seen Ellie take so much that he
drew a crowd and they were startingto like hype him up. Momentum was
building, and then he caps itoff with a swing to dead center right
off the riverboat. His teammates swarmof Will Benson does the Vince Carter dunk.
Content it's over celebration, and howdo you know when good things are
(46:04):
coming from Elie de la Cruz,Like, obviously, bad in practice can
only show you so much. Buthe is the guy who is like he
struggled because of pitch selection, timingand rhythm, not because he got out
of his mechanics or because he waschanging his approach or trying to do too
much. He is the guy whowhen it's clicking, it's very obvious there
are signs. You look at histapes and how and you know the pitches
(46:28):
that he's laying off of. Ithink something that's huge for Elliot's his aggressiveness
so much, or like I believefour of his six hits this week have
been within the first four pitches ofthe at that and I believe three were
on the first pitch of the atthat. You're seeing that all combined together
and then just watching him swing thattiming makes sense. The pieces linked up
and when that happens. We've seenweeks where Ellie's the best player in baseball
(46:51):
and this week when you combine inthe defense too, Like, I don't
know that just this week many playershave been playing better in baseball than out.
What is it about this team orwhat you've seen with their approach at
the plate? A thirteen run performance, a twelve run performance, eight runs
on nine hits last night. Hasanything from an approach standpoint changed or is
(47:12):
this just players that are finding theirrhythm and gaining confidence at the dish?
Aren't there four main things? Oneof them, I mean, they played
the Rockies at course Field. Thathelps, Let's let's be real about that.
But I think there are some verytangible, noticeable things as well.
This is the best collective team approachwe've seen from the Reds this year,
passing the baton, not trying todo too much, taking the ball the
(47:36):
other way. How many of thesebig hits have been the other way.
On top of that, you're seeinglike seven different guys have made adjustments that
have taken their swing to another level. Jonathan India has done stuff with his
hands to help them pull the ballmore down the line. Will Benson wrote
in his journal two weeks ago,Hick ground balls to the shortstop and he
used that as kind of a buildingblock, and he's now he's an over
(47:59):
one ops. Over the last twoweeks. Candelaria made some tweaks and he's
kind of a timing and rhythm andfield guys well, similar to Ellie,
and he has just been a reallyconsistent piece over the last thirty days.
Steers said it was the mental stuffthat he broke through and now he's back
to being the spencer. Steer weall know, you know, some more
guys in that camp, and thenthere's a hitting his contagious aspect of this
(48:20):
as well. They're picking each otherup. You're seeing guys be the best
versions of themselves. There's an energythat's help them pick the team off the
mat when they're down like four runsor three runs in Colorado. All these
things combined together, I mean, they're just playing good baseball. It's as
simple as that. They've had twoout RBIs The amount of those have been
incredible. You mentioned the mental side, Charlie. How much of that can
be in play for a guy likeJonathan India, who's now up to two
(48:44):
forty four on the season. Itseemed like he struggled batting higher in the
lineup, and it seems like he'sjust more comfortable where he's at eighth in
the lineup. Is that a mentality? Is that the type of pitches you're
seeing that had, he just seemslike he's more comfortable at the eight hole
rather than higher in the lineup. This is a really interesting conversation. I
(49:07):
don't know. Going back to openingday, they said we're gonna put you
in the leadoff spot. We're gonnalet you beat Jonathan India the leadoff hitter.
This is the version of you that'sbeen the best go be you,
and he wasn't in those first twomonths he had this season. Was really
your six weeks that was really thefirst time in his career where he's been
healthy and he hasn't been good likeusually when he hasn't been good, he's
(49:30):
been dealing with an injury. Hemade an adjustment, you know, with
the hands to turn the ball downthe line. Like I mentioned hitting eight,
they've really been committed to that, even hitting guys like a Herdabies or
you know, back in the day, Mike Ford above him. To make
sure Indian Benson are slotted at eightto nine. I don't think there's a
lot to that, like it takesthe pressure off or anything like that.
(49:52):
I just think it's the place thatkind of lets the lineup reset with India
Benson Friedel as kind of a youknow, second top of the order.
You have like two double leadoff hittersor for whatever you want to call it.
It's been a comfortable spot for India, so they haven't messed with it.
But certainly, like even against lefthanded pitchers especially, I expect to
hit higher. But it has workedout the rhythm of line up with the
(50:14):
way it's so recently, Charlie. The offense has been up and down,
the pitching staff has been solid. The pitching staff has been consistent, I'll
set aside Graham Ashcraft. We'll talkabout him in just a minute. When
you look at the other four starters, all of their eras are now under
four. Hunter Green, for fivestraight starts, has lasted six or more
(50:35):
innings. Frankie Mountoss is coming offto off arguably his best out end of
the year. When you look atGreen, Lodolo, when you look at
Abbott and Montass, how impressive isit what this starting rotation is being able
to do right now? They're justgood and like each of those pictures,
just kind of level of you know, either you could say maturity or focus
(50:59):
or int the way they've you know, Hunter Green, I think a great
example. Faces the Cubs. Hepitched in the pouring rain last week.
He gave the Red you know, six innings, but he allowed a grand
Slam. Well, then he comesback, he faces him again and he
goes, you know what, I'mjust gonna throw my splitter this time more
than I've ever thrown it in mylife, because I need to do something
to shake it up, to keepa team that knows me well off balanced.
(51:22):
And I know he honed two pitchesyesterday that turned into homers, but
that's a perfect example of a gameto game adjustment that Green literally didn't have
the tools to make last year becausehe didn't have a third pitch. Also
maybe didn't have the mindset the intentto make those types of changes. He
was just gonna throw his fastball onehundred miles an hour and try to beat
you with it. Well, nowhe's mixing his fastball. You're seeing ninety
(51:45):
four's's, ninety six, ninety nine, one hundreds, all in different situations
so he can get the pitch toa specific spot or so he can dial
it up when he needs it.And he's just been so consistent. I
think he's a perfect encapsulation abbot Lidolohave versions of that. And then Frankie's
just getting healthier, and you sawin Colorado. You know, we've seen
a couple starts this year. Hekind of don't want to compare him to
(52:07):
Ellie, but has had Ellie likehot stretches combined with cold stretches. But
when he's firing too, that's anothertop half of the rotation quality pitcher.
How would you at this point,Charlie describe the bullpen at this point of
the season and the job that they'vedone for the Reds. I had a
good conversation with Fernando Cruz yesterday.I think you got to start with him.
(52:28):
What I talked to him about wasFernando Cruz was not trusted in high
leverage situations. Last year. Hewas a nice story, he was a
durable arm, but he wasn't thesetup guy. And most notably, you
know, the worst game maybe thelast decades for the Reds was there up
nine to nothing in Pittsburgh the lastweek of the season. Cruise allows that
believe four runs. He tells meafter that game, this is on me,
(52:50):
and that ended up being one ofthe things that you know, ended
the season. For him to bethat much of a different pitcher in high
leverage situations from last year to thisyear, I don't though that I've seen
a pitcher get better at that, you know, the leverage part of it
on a one year basis to another, and than Fernandar Cruz has. Part
of it is he's able to controland locate his splitter better. Part of
it is, he says, thepitching staff, the you know, the
(53:14):
coaching staff has helped him develop differentstrategies and approaches to what he does in
those moments. And part of itis he's just fearless and he's emotional and
the redor getting the best version outof him for three straight days. It's
pretty rare to do what he's done, three high leverage spots back to back
to back. Time Diez is pitchingbetter. We all know who SIMS is.
(53:34):
They have more quality lefties than they'veever had, so they can bring
in, you know, famously likeSam mall to face show Heyo Tani and
he beats o'tany twice like. Theyjust have the options in the versatility to
do that type of stuff and it'sworking. As much as we highlighted the
good and I don't want to sayterrible gray Asscraft all off season, we
(53:57):
would mention Green Lodoloft. It's kindof that three headed monster at the top.
Now flash forward to where we aretoday. Graham Ashcraft is in Triple
A. I know David Bell spokea little bit about Graham Ashcraft. What's
your take on where Graham Ashcraft isand where the disconnect maybe is right now
with what we're seeing on the mound. I think the key to understanding this
(54:19):
move is the timing in terms ofthe off dage that the Reds have They're
not in a situation where they neededa starter obviously, because they can go
with the form in rotation the foreseeablefuture. I mean they were looking at
what was best for Asscraft, theguy they've stressed is still on the best
version of the Red team in abig role, giving him this chance to
be set basically like he had lastyear when he went on the IL with
(54:40):
I believe it was a shitting contusionor something like that, let him get
a couple of starts in Triple A. It's really he's I don't want to
say overthrown, but his mechanics cancan kind of get away from him when
he's trying to do too much onspecific pitches, and I think to the
big thing with Graham, and heneeds to work on that change up.
(55:01):
A huge problem is his cutter looksa lot like his spider, and hitters
are just they're only like eight milesan hour apart or something like that,
so hitters are just looking for ahard thing that moves one way, and
it's not a way to keep hittersout balanced. He needs to be able
to slow guys down or else hemight end up being a leaver in the
long run. So those are acouple of things that he can work on
(55:22):
to get back on track for rightnow, would that better serve the reds
of Graham Ashcraft being a reliever forthis team depending on the health of I
think Brandon Williamson. I think nowthey obviously sending him to triple a kind
of opens up that conversation for thelong run. The upside and potential of
Ashcraft, who literally throws a cutterharder than any pitcher in baseball, combined
(55:45):
with his ability to get ground ballsat a high level and pitch deep into
games. Like, what's the line, Like, you give a guy a
chance to be a starter until they'renot. Like, I'm trying to think
a million guys have done the quarterbackto receiver move in football. Well,
give that guy every chance to bea quarterback before you end up moving him
to be a wide receiver. SoI would want to give Ashcraft as much
(56:07):
time as possible this season. ButI also like, maybe he's Nick Martinez,
and like, in the long run, you know, in the long
future, Nick Martinez is making twelvethirteen million dollars this year, Like,
there's no there's nothing wrong with thatthat's a very good living. I think
like when I look at Ashcraft, maybe that's who he is. Obviously still
the potential to be a top halfof the rotation starter, but definitely some
(56:30):
stuff to work up, Charlie. From a health standpoint, we know this
team is through a brutal part ofthe schedule. We know their run differential
is there. We know that they'velost a lot of one run games and
they've just not been healthy. Youlook at guys like afore mentioned Brandon Williamson,
look at a Marte Ces, whereare we at in some of those
(56:52):
key pieces for the Cincinnati Reds gettingback to joining this team. Ces has
been cleared the ramp up, buthe's quested a second opinion. We'll be
in that before he keeps going.Williamson's pitching and Triple A did belts that
he needs more time. Bell reference, the Reds could use a spot starter.
I believe it would be next weekthe next time they'd need a fifth
(57:12):
starter. Williamson could be an optionfor that. But but maybe what this
is is Williamson on his rehabit signthen and ash Craft in Triple A competing
to be a guy who comes upin the long term for the rotation.
And then two, I mean, you know it's time to start talking about
Noelovie Martet. Reports are he's beenin good shape, he stayed ready the
red to find have found you know, game like environments for him to be
(57:35):
a part of, to get asmany reps in that bats as he possibly
can. The big question is isjust the overall way, the overall style
he's playing with, from a timing, from an athleticism, from just the
way he again just playing the game. Will fifteen games be enough for him
to come back on June twenty seventh. That's a very interesting conversation. That's
(57:55):
a question that Marte will answer himselfby the preparation he's doing to get ready
for his rehabit signment. Again, early early signs have been positive, but
there's definitely a lot for him toshow on that rehabit signment in Louisville.
And then how much more time doeshe need, how much of a spring
training does he need for him toget ready to be you know, a
(58:15):
big piece of the Reds again. He's still as much of a part of
that young core as anyone, butobviously coming back from this suspension a big
time for him to prove it.Cees requesting a second opinion. Is that
normal? Is that something we seemore often than not? Or is that
a bit of a surprise. It'snormal. It definitely is notable from you
(58:40):
know, considering they miss this fracturefor ten days, So it's definitely you
know that that raises a flat nota fly, but that raises an interesting
topic to discuss there. Buck notMcClain did the same thing when he injured
his shoulder and he ended up growing, I believe through La Trash and then
they kind of took leadership over thatprocess. And so like we've definitely seen
(59:02):
other examples of this happening with Redand with a lot of big leaders as
well. Charlie Goldsmith covering the CincinnatiReds Real Quick one question, mandatory mini
camp next week. Any surprises thatyou're expecting or are you expecting everyone except
probably t Higgins to be there? Were you concerned it all this week with
(59:23):
Joe Burrow not throwing anything of noteright now for the Cincinnati Bengals. In
your opinion, there's an old linethat you can't win a super Bowl in
May, but you can lose asuper Bowl in May. I was thinking
a lot about that with Burrow thisweek. I want to say, like
what I've seen and what I've heard, and most of the are almost all
(59:43):
this was before this week, Likethere's a slant. He threw over the
middle to Yoshivash two weeks ago andYoshibah dropped it. And he said he
dropped it because frankly, he wasn'tused to the ball getting thrown that hard,
and it was an adjustment process forhim. It was like an RPO
splint seeing the ball come out thatquickly, timing over the middle. So
you know, he told me that, and all of a sudden, I
(01:00:04):
was ready to start leaning all theway into the velocity and aggressiveness of Burrow
getting back exactly where you'd expect. But as Burrow said, they are good
days and there are bad days. You know, he's been upfront about that
from the start. You want theBengals to be proactive about this. There's
still is so much time for Burrowto get exactly where he needs to be
for the season that you want tomanage this the right way, like follow
(01:00:25):
with what's going on in Indianapolis rightnow, Like I'm more worried, not
worried because the Coles don't worry aboutAnthony Richardson. But you'll take this Joe
Burrow situation over. You know,Anthony Richardson throwing left handed passes in practice
yesterday because his right shoulder is stilldealing with soreness or whatever wording they're using.
So I mean, of course, mandatory mini camp watching Burrow throw will
(01:00:47):
be the first thing we'll be doing. Charlie. When Zach said this week
that they have not gone two daysin a row with him throwing, was
that new information or or was thatsomething new to me that was new to
me? Charlie, before I letyou go, was last night all you
(01:01:07):
needed to see are the Celtics theworld champions or the MAVs. Can the
MAVs find a way to rebound?I felt like I was watching five Charlie
Goldsmith's shoot threes last night in thefirst half for the Celtics. You know
what, in all seriousness like sofor I'm sticking to my pick MAVs and
seven. That would be a firstoff move to change a pick after one
(01:01:28):
game you say five Charlie Goldsmiths,And I don't want to talk about my
basketball game too much. But fiveCharlie Goldsmith's what that would look like would
be five switchable athletics. Yep,play me Sam Hauser. And like what
Boston has done better than anywhere elseis everyone says you want to five out
offense with guys who could switch andguys who are athletic. Everyone in the
(01:01:52):
league wants that. That's the nameof the game. That's where the the
NBA the holy grail of what youwant to line up to look like.
The Celtics the best team in thelast decade. But the Celtics have done
a better job getting actually six guysbecause you know they can have Corford in
Thererow Paison gets it White or Holidayor Catamum Brown. Having that many guys
who can do that many things, they can attack the weekst mashup. You
(01:02:14):
can't attack a week matchup for them. That's why Lucas struggled so much,
and that's why the defense struggled somuch, because the Celtics have the strongest
weakest links That are a few numof basketball team, probably since like the
early twenty ten Sperms are the closestthing remind me of crazy crazy to watch
Charlie switchable athletic playmake that's it.That's it. That is Charlie Goldsmith in
(01:02:35):
every segment that he does. Charlieappreciates your time as always. Man,
I look forward to talking again nextweek. Have a great weekend. See
you guys. Yes, sir, there he is simply put see you say
it, Charlie Goldsmith. Fantastic stuff. That's a great way to kick off
the first hour. Your talkbacks willbe next right here on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station. Thanks to ourfriends at Cincy Shirts. I'm on ESPN
(01:02:58):
fifteen thirty Sinneti's Sports station. Isthat time for talkbacks? Press the microphone
and record your message for Ustan intone. Yeah, please keep it clean,
uh huh and don't be mean.Yeah, and a sprinkle sprinkled drip,
yes, drip, Yes, it'sthat time for talk bess. Yes,
it's our favorite part of Sancy threesixties. Austin Buddy played that talkback
(01:03:24):
on your screen, and please rightnot to Saba Taja, dude, dude,
there it is there, It isall right. Now we've done our
part to this moment. Can thetalkbackers do theirs? Man? I like
the story, Oh boys and Redlegs. Just keep phone rolling, rolling
(01:03:45):
rolling. They are red hot hotye that up against them coming NBA Finals
last night. Oh my word,it's like the Celtics took the sirlele off
the logo and beat the matter likea Grand Canyon mule having an or off
the logo. That song Roll andbiscuit. God, that brought me back
to need for speed too hot pursuit. Hey, Tony, best of luck
(01:04:12):
to you and your wife on theimpending arrival of your new edition. My
wife and I will be in thehospital on Tuesday for our new addition to
our family. Wow and the newestmember of the Sincy three sixty fan Wow.
Congratulations. I can tell you thisa little insider info. We are
(01:04:34):
set for Thursday of next week.Is uh is the day? But I
can tell you this Austin. Wehad our last doctor appointment today and my
wife was dead set that they weregoing to measure and by the end of
the appointment today they were going tobe like, you know what, it's
(01:04:56):
time today, let's just roll youover here. That's what get it fully
expected and it didn't happen. Andnow all I'm here and is how all
this is my fault. Oh it'syour fault, wouldn't it. Essentially she
could be right? Well, yeah, I mean I think she's going to
point there. But yes, Thursdayof next week is the date. Yes,
(01:05:16):
Austin and Tony, this is BoomerDrew from heading down to SINCI to
see the Cubs and Reds play tonight. And I did, yeah, driving
in my buddy's corvette, nobuddy corvetteJeff Jeff obviously a Cubs fan. That's
too bad. He's not perfect, obviously, So we're gonna enjoy some good
food downtown, see some good baseball, and like he said, blow flubs.
(01:05:45):
I sure hope there's no flat tirein that corvette for corvette Jeffrey.
Did Austin just say his favorite doughnutis a long job? He did.
It's like going to Skyline and sayingthat your favorite item on the menu is
the Buffalo Chicken ramps. Fine, dude, there's three ways and counties on
there. Come on listen. Yeah, I was. I was interested to
get away with the people. Onlyhear what they want to hear, I
(01:06:08):
said, all of them. Andthen I said, it's hard to beat
a good long Johns. You did, I did say that you said,
what, Uh, my favorite Ilove. I'm gonna get dragged regardless,
but I love blueberry glaze. Thoseare my fast blueberry blue but blueberry glaze,
blueberry glaze. Long John's. Hey, guys, mark it from the
(01:06:30):
groove, Marcus five in a row. Ellie would look good in triple A,
wouldn't he a bunch of clowns sayingthat stuff? Now, boy,
this team is scary good right now. And to the ones that are saying
they're finally coming around and that thisthis is a magical time just like last
(01:06:53):
year, this ain't magical. Thisis what was supposed to happen. But
I like that. I like thattalk. It's gotta be the expectation surprised
about this. This is supposed tohappen, rolling, rolling, rolling,
rolling, Let's keep it going,Red Brad. Another would be nice man,
(01:07:15):
passionate, energetic, Tony Audi,Rhino from the wood. Here been
a great stretch for the Red Legs. Enjoy the electricity of the game.
But mark lead off every week sowe can just for every day, so
we can get it over with andAudie pictures you one bite along jobs now
(01:07:40):
weekend. One bite That's it.Everybody knows the rules, Christ Jim Sunny,
Friday shoutouts and love Tony three sixtyNation, Moegger, Charlie Goldsmith,
loud talk back guy. Thanks forthe reds enormous upsides roster and we're gonna
make it happen. There's nothing youcan do that can be Jones. Yeah.
(01:08:06):
No, then you can sing thatcan be sung y Yeah, Jim
Pastic, Jim Fellows, Hank Hillhere. And I tell you what,
would you all agree with me thatthis city is just better when the Reds
are playing winning baseball? Oh,I tell you what, Buzzy, this
(01:08:27):
city is just it just hits differentwhen the Reds are playing winning baseball.
The whole mood of the city isbetter. The skyline is a bit more
cheesy, the sency lights are alittle bit more crisp. Come on,
boy, I tell you what,go got, dang Reds. The word
we're looking for is healthy. I'mstilled out here in Ecuador. Oh Man,
(01:08:54):
Friday, So I had to makean appearance to the Friday drink recommendation
of the weekend, which is whatI had on the beach yesterday. Well,
listening to the show, it wason the beach folks. That's vodka,
range juice, cranberry juice and beachnot delicious drinket. All guys,
the Reds are doing okay. TheBengals are gonna be great. This is
a great weekend. So Johnny justessentially said, look, I'm not renewing,
(01:09:18):
I'm not running again as president, and now I'm just leaving the country.
Yeahbatical, Yes, Friday. Youknow Jimminy cricket once said your conscience
be your guide. Wow, that'sexactly what the US men's cricket team did
yesterday against Pakistan. They used theirmoral compass to make the right decisions.
(01:09:38):
Yeah, guide their team to victory. I don't know anything about cricket,
but the US upset is always fun. I don't know anything on Mark.
I love his daily contributions to yourshow. I think he's trying to make
the team better even when they win. I'll hang up and listen to your
thoughts. I like that. Idon't know anything about cricket, but I
know about this country and I respectit and I love it. What's up,
(01:10:00):
guys. Mike from Covedale, Hey, shout out to my dad for
standing on Christmas. He got usdiamond seats for tonight's game. Wow,
I couldn't have picked a better game. In middle of a wind streak,
City Connect uniforms, fireworks, Fridaygonna be dumping them in the diamond seats
with Dad And he said his dadstands on Christmas. Yeah, make a
sign for us, make us sincehe three sixty signed, so you can
(01:10:21):
put it up on TV. Inthe back of the police standing on is
former President Ronald Regan. And well, lately the Reds have been reminding me
of that eighties group, the RuthMix. You remember them. They had
a couple of pretty good sized hits. One was here comes the Reds Again,
(01:10:43):
raining on the Cubs like a CanyonMule. That was a favorite of
mine. But my old time favoritewas sweep Dreams Are Made of the Wow.
Who is mark to disagree? Ohthat's good, hey, guys,
Happy Friday, talkback matters guy, great show, great interview, than great
(01:11:06):
interview. Thanks. Guys like him, you know, playing for the Green
Bay and just a hometown guy.It just makes it great. Hey,
I want to talk about the Redsworld fast. Sure, man, We've
got to get a veteran on here. I honestly believe that a veteran would
mess this up, and I don'tthink we have to go all in with
(01:11:26):
one. But what's your thoughts, guys? Can we get a veteran?
I mean, can jam Or bethat guy? He's turning into him?
He's been playing like that lately.Jonathan Eddy has been that guy. Jendy
britt Souter has been that guy.Shot. I mean, thank you for
the compliment though on the interview, where do they need where would you?
(01:11:48):
Yes, thank you? Where wouldyou like them to acquire a veteran?
Where would you like him to beinserted into the team. You're asking where
else would you want to go?Well, that's what I'm trying to ask
of a talkback Matters. This couldbe the greatest weekend of our lives so
far. I mean, hooting theBlowfish in Town to night. The Red
Legs are hot against the Cubs inTown, the Backcats and a super regional
(01:12:12):
elect Sunday we got the NBA Finals. I mean take a masters charget on
the way. So if people wantto throw free Kentucky Backcats ticket, I'll
buy the beer. Hey, thegreatest weekend of our lives starts now,
let's get after its ight so far, greatest weekend of our life so far?
Uh starts now. Always good tohear from Liam. I like that
guy genuinely needs help the way wellhe absolutely needs help, but the way
(01:12:36):
that he sees life is something Iam the spectacle. Red's run differential is
fourth best and then nationally could bebetter. Now after winning last night by
four, that's a great sign. They've done horrible one run games. That's
got to turn around. And anotherthing. Don't quote me, but I
(01:12:56):
think George from the Valley and JohnnyMoon are thrown up Fitch night. That's
pretty cool. Wow, three twoone waiting for the pause? Reds,
(01:13:20):
Who are you guys? I mean, you know you're going on this tear
lately and then then you stack upa bunch of losses and go on and
losing streak, and then you're thenyou're playing great, and you know it's
like Jack on Hide. I meanit's like, I think you play with
too much emotion. When you're high, you're great. When you're low,
(01:13:43):
you're losing. Oh thank you.Just tough to follow that. That's a
tough tough spot to draw him.I gotta start bench cut all right,
based on who has a deeper voiceme good time, Charlie or James Rapine.
(01:14:06):
I'll start Charlie. Yep, I'llbench Elmo and I'll cut James.
You and me about the first timehe's been judge on this fireball heading down
to the since he here shortly havesome drinks, catch the Reds game.
Don't say a word, Austin,go Red. I don't have to say
(01:14:26):
George, congratulations, have fun tonight. They give you one those City connect
jerseys and roll out the red carpetman for George. Hey, guys,
Steven Montgomery, quick point about theReds recent winning street. Sure, one
thing I've noticed is they don't seemto be taking as many pitches. They're
not walking as much. Two ofthe five games in this winning street they
(01:14:46):
didn't take a single walk. Yetthey won't handle the good point teams just
sudjusted to them sitting back and waitingon pitches, dropping strikes in, putting
them behind in the count, puttingit in their advantage. So let's be
aggressive. Read he keeps swinging thebats and keep winning games. I love
it. Love the aggressiveness. Everybodylove everybody. Everybody usually picks somebody.
(01:15:09):
Yep. Gotta be honest. TheMadden thing had me worried at first,
but then I thought about how JoshAllen had a pre decent year last year?
Did he though? And Burrows basicallyalready overcome the odds and the worst
thing possible has already happened to himlike twice without a Madden curse. So
(01:15:34):
yeah, not really worried. DidJosh Allen have a good year last year?
I would say he was okay lastyear? Yeah? Yeah. Now
I will officially say the Reds areback, baby. They They've shown me
what I needed, what I neededto see. They look, they look
(01:15:55):
awesome right now. As for theNBA Finals, I still think the Mans
are gonna win in six. Ijust think Luca and Uh and Kyrie Got
they're gonna they're gonna take over theseries, rest away and PJ. Washington
I like Uh. I like hima lot too. Okay, there you
go. Yeah, five Charlie Goldsmithon a basketball court. Pretty good.
(01:16:17):
Try having five Zach talkbackers, truejack of all trades, A really good
armchair quarterback knows what he's talking aboutsometimes, and then there's the the Zach
that doesn't know what he's talking aboutwhen it pertains to some issues. There's
the Zach who actually knows how tohang up and listen, and uh,
there's the Zach that's a true, true fan of the show. Yeah.
(01:16:41):
Five Zach talkbackers can't really beat that. Okay, who is that guy?
Is that Zach? I don't knowthat, No idea what that guy's talking
about, Austin, I got yourback, good long John, but with
Bavarian cream it's chan. It's different. Man. Oh boy, man,
(01:17:04):
A good Long John with Bavarian creamnothing like it. Man. I do
want to address something quickly about talkbacks. We've had a couple of people say
that or accuse me of not playingtheir talkbacks. I have played every single
talkback that has been submitted today, beginning with Kevin's at eight forty three am
(01:17:26):
up until the one that just camein at one thirty. Just now,
about the Long Johns, make surewhen you are leaving a talkback that you
get a confirmation from the app thatsays it was successfully submitted. We've had
a couple of people say that they'rehaving trouble submitting them. You may have
to try it one or two times. I know my dad has struggled with
(01:17:50):
this. Our sales guy Todd.I'm struggling with this. Earlier. I
got a couple of texts here frompeople that were struggling with it. So
make sure you get a confirmation fromthe app, give it a second,
wait for it to submit that youhave done it. If not, you
might have to try it again. All right? Is that it? That's
it? I believe we're Are wegoing to Knoxville after this? I now,
(01:18:12):
I can't guarantee it. I'm gonnaconfirm with them here because we're gonna
do Knoxville for a minute. We'regoing to do a touch and go.
We're going to try to get toKnoxville, all right, and check in
on the aces. Also, justone more time, congrats to George and
Johnny Moon. Yeah, the detailsfrom tonight. A special night at the
ball right at the ballpark and forthem hopefully a special day at the ballpark
for the Evansville Asis and balling ain'teasy. Just took a commanding lead in
(01:18:36):
my favorite talkbacker rankings. That's thefirst lead he's had in a while after
a Memorial Day tournament. While allright sincey three sixth the ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station, Thanks to ourfriends at Cincy shirts. In this week's
Marketers Report, Angelisa Paida CMO HyundaiMotor America talks about audio story. That's
(01:18:59):
the sound of A and go.When we get back, we'll finish up
our number two, hopefully checking inon an Evansville Ace in Knoxville, ready
to shock the world. Cinty threeto sixty ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports
Station. We're a service of CINTIshirts, he continues on ESPN fifteen thirty
(01:19:24):
Cincinnati Sports Station. Oh whoa,WHOA, Welcome back, sinty three sixty
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station,A service of CINTI shirts. Here's the
dal Austin. The number one overallseed in this year's NCAA Division One Baseball
(01:19:50):
Championship is the Tennessee Volunteers. Theyare hosting today the Aces right across away
from Evansville. And we are luckyenough right now to have a chance to
talk to just recently named one ofthe top sixty best relievers in Evansville baseball
(01:20:14):
history. We've got boots on theground in Knoxville, Tennessee. It's none
other than Connor. Connor, what'sup? I don't know what's more disrespectful
is Audie playing Rocky Top or theintro being one of Evansville's sixtieth sixtieth greatest
relievers of all time. Both areequally disrespectful. At the same time,
Connor paint. The picture for meis the city of Knoxville being painted purple.
(01:20:40):
Right now, I'll say this,I think Lindsey Nelson holds about seventy
five hundred. I think I thinkwe'll have I think we'll have about one
thousand in purple. But I haveto preface this with right now, I'm
staring at at Neeland Stadium, thefootball stadium right next to the baseball stadium.
I'm on a boat. WHOA.Actually we were tailgating at at one
(01:21:02):
of the bars of these very verygracious Tennessee Vall nation. Uh said,
instead of hey, instead of walkingthirty minutes to the stadium, why don't
you just hop on our boat? And I don't know if we're being taken
out the the Tennessee River to be, you know, to be ditched and
left. But so far Tennessee Vallhospitality has been just now that there's no
(01:21:26):
there's no chance you make the game. Listen the games in sixty eight minutes,
we won't hear from you. We'llhear from you again. You're on
the boat, people, you don'tknow all. All I'm hoping for at
this point is, at some pointtoday or tomorrow, if there is a
three minute glimpse where I have thehope that I realistically think that this evans
(01:21:49):
overple A's team can go from theSweet sixteen to winning a national championship.
It's a successful weekend. I don'tneed a big lead. I don't even
need a win if we have threeminutes of hope. And used to know
this as a Cincinnati fans, shouldthis as an Ohio state? How dare
you? That's all you can askfor? What exactly is an ace?
(01:22:09):
Connor? Oh a purple ace isis just like the deck of cards.
Our mascot is a riverboat gambler, and you're on a boat. You know,
if you if you ask me,that seems like a perfect perfect DraftKings
handle NIOLA Final fours in basketball too. You know, take me back.
(01:22:30):
You mentioned something that I think somany Cincinnati sports fans can relate to because
I essentially live that way before everybig game that the Bearcats play. When
you have a couple of drinks, and no matter where you're at, no
matter what the odds are stacked againstyou, you legitimately buy into the fact
that you're going to win and winit all. Are you there yet?
(01:22:53):
I'm I am fully convinced. Again, I didn't say I've had any drinks,
but I am fully convinced walking intothis baseball game that Evansville is going
to win the National championship this year. I'm fully convinceded. Unbelievable. What
would that mean for you personally asa legend of the program earlier top sixty?
Uh, to see that happen?Well, you know, I think
(01:23:13):
it's just a level of respect thatyou know, I might not be getting,
you know, elsewhere on the airwaves, but I think that would just
add to a level of respect thatyou know, whether it's calar because whatever
whatever ricochet shots I did on thisshow on a day in and day out
basis, I think it would justbe a nice little level of respect.
Now, the Tennessee River, theTennessee River that you're on right now is
(01:23:38):
now home to the former goal postfrom Naland Stadium. After the big win.
Have you seen the goalposts are theytaking you down there. Are you
planning on going one of those underwatertours to see it? I'm gonna be
really honest. The Tennessee River remindsme a lot of the Ohio River.
After about six inches deep, youcan't see a damn thing. It's very
brown. So it could be underWe could be under the neland stadium goalpost
(01:24:01):
right now, and I would haveno idea. Okay, I'm looking at
the suite, our host, ourhost, our host. They were about
fifty yards away. Oh. I'mlooking at the Sweet sixteen, and I
see teams that are pretty much astaple when you get to the Sweet sixteen
Evansville, and no disrespect to theprogram. Now, like a sore thumb,
they stick out a little bit.But in recent news, the Freeland
(01:24:23):
family has made a donation to thefacilities at Evansville. I'm sure you have
made a private donation because you don'twant any of the attention coming back to
yourself. Is this something? Isthis something you see now as something that
won't be a surprise in the future. Is this the building block for Evansville
to become one of the staples inNCAA baseball? You know, that's that's
(01:24:45):
actually an interesting question. I thinkwith the genuinely with the NIL aspect of
college baseball, the SEC is kindof you know, transcending any other sport
there. You know, the bestfootball conference. Austin might disagree, but
far and away the best football conference, far and away about you know,
maybe not the best basketball conference, but it would compete with the Big Twelve
(01:25:05):
this coming year in baseball, they'refar and away the best because they do
not legitimate you know, some placesmillion dollars, multimillion dollar payrolls in NIL
for college baseball. So I dothink for a school like Evansville to have
success and get to this point,it's more so you're able to go and
tap into the transfer portal and addguys that you know, maybe not are
(01:25:27):
you know, they're not the guysthat are going to get half a million
dollars from LSU to go play fora season or two. But you can't
get that guys that you know areable to get you to a certain place
and hopefully continue to emptc What thatfired up because we're I get told that
I am that that we've got togo and we're we're we're a little crunch
for time, Connor, enjoy theatmosphere. Burn that city down when Evansville
(01:25:48):
advances. I just got an anonymoustext that said Evansville has no shot.
Your response to that would be whatmy response would be? My response to
that would be, I'm not agambling man, but the Purple Aces are
riverboat gamblers. And if you wantthe smart money, if you want the
value money, it's purple Aces plusfour fifty. Let's go paint that city
(01:26:12):
purple. Let's go Aces, Tonner, Thank you, he's gone paint the
city purple. What a riveting fourminutes for our Would you now, now
let me ask you something, askme? Would you let me ask you.
Would you ever jump on a boatwith a bunch of people you don't
know from a team you're about toplay and trust that they're just gonna drop
(01:26:34):
you off at the stadium in Tennessee? Yes, I would. Other places
not so much. Michigan not doingthat, nan Arbor, Yeah, nope,
good point. Thanks to downright me, Thanks to con That was great.
Boots on the ground, and atleast for a day, at least
for a weekend, Austin, I'min Evansville, Ace, go for it,
man, whatever it takes Tom Galladerwill join us. Good luck following

Tom Gilader, who joins us rightnow. Tommy g Tommy, Tommy,
Tommy, what's going on? Tony, Tony, Tony, Happy Friday.
(01:28:02):
Glad we're still doing this even thoughit is a bye week international break time
off. There is no time offfor this show. There's no time off
for the Orange blue updates that webring everybody who faithfully tunes in and sends
us their appreciation afterwards. So weare here for the people. Tony.
I'm glad you're here for the people. You're on the cusp of child number
three, your life about to getflipped upside down. I guess next Friday
(01:28:25):
of this be Austin and myself, yes, doing this, but you know,
best of luck to your family overthe next week. And now life
is good. It's sun is shining, the weather's brilliant. So I don't
know, I can't ask for muchmore. Last week we talked about how
you will spend this mini break andwhat that looks like, and we talked
about some of the team you knowyou mentioned getting their toes in the say
(01:28:45):
and relaxing, unwinding. What doesit look like now for the club,
because obviously you want to remain intip top shape. You want to come
out of a break playing still youryour best soccer and I know it was
a great run, but you didenter this stretch with the disappointing loss at
home. What does this time nowlook like for FC Cincinnati. Yeah,
(01:29:08):
that's a good question. And lastnight they had ladies lace up for that
conundation, so I was able toactually catch up with Pat Nonan a little
bit, ask him how the returnto training has been. And first and
foremost, you know, he gotaway with his family for a few days,
said they had a fantastic time.Much needed at this point in the
season, you know, with thatwindstreak. Obviously before the Nashville loss,
was a little bit of like doyou want to stop the momentum if things
(01:29:29):
had gone well against Nashville, ordo you want to get back get a
win right away after losing to Nashville. But look, the schedule is what
it is, it seemed like foreverybody. And Lucho made a guest appearance
at the event last night, soI saw him. He got away for
a few days that everybody really usedthe time one way or another, whether
a short trip, a big trip, a beach trip, whatever it was,
to rest and relax and recharge alittle bit and pat seemed enthusiastic about
(01:29:54):
the way the guys had come backand trained the last three days. So
they got back later in the dayTuesday, trained in that later later for
noon hours on Tuesday. Back tothe regular routine Wednesday, Thursday, and
today Friday. To kind of simulatea match week. They're going to scrimmage
tomorrow at MHTC and then have Sundayand Monday off, just as they would
(01:30:15):
if they had a game tomorrow, and come back in on Tuesday to gear
up for their longest trip of theyear to San Jose next Saturday. So
that'll put them back into a regularweek. You know, in chatting with
some of the coaching staff, theydid know it's like it's a little bit
weird, Like it's good you canwork on some extra things, but it's
also you know, you're not workingon San Jose yet, right, so
you're not necessarily game planning for themyet. So it'd be nice, you
(01:30:38):
know, once they turn the cornerof tomorrow, then they can look ahead
to San Jose and prepare for thatmatch. So would you look, I
kind of equate things into my footballterms that I'm understanding, like bye week
for college or NFL is more selfscout, work on yourself, maybe allow
some younger players or players that don'tcontribute as much to get some meaningful reps
(01:31:00):
and to have some eyes on them. Is that essentially when they do get
back, is that how a coupleof days will go and then you really
dive into San Jose and a quickerturnaround against Philadelphia. Yeah, I think
that'll be the case. I thinkthis week they're probably working on, you
know a lot of team things, and they've they've had a couple different guys
involved from the academy from the twoteam, but the two team is on
(01:31:21):
the road last night Phildelphia. Shoutout to the twos. They got to
win to nail. But a guylike Kip Keller who hasn't seen a lot
of minutes lately. Nick Haglin's beenthe fourth center back involved in the rotation
when there's been minutes available, Kiphasn't played a lot lately. So Kip
made the trip to Philadelphia and startedthat match for the twos and they're win
yesterday against against the Union second team, So you know I think that yeah,
(01:31:44):
sure, right now, it's alot of you know, work on
some of your internal things, andthen they'll start introducing and I would imagine,
granted not in the meetings, butI imagine they start to introduce some
of that San Jose prep next weekfour matches fifteen days from June five,
fifteenth to the twenty ninth, comingout of this break. Two of those
will be at TQL Stadium. Butthe importance, because we started a little
(01:32:09):
bit slow at the start of theyear, they've gained the momentum. How
much importance are you now placing onstarting with this San Jose match with a
much faster start than what we sawfrom the club earlier in the year.
Yeah, No, I think yougot to come out of the break and
be ready to rock, and Ibelieve this team will be, and it'll
be a little hungry, a littlebit ticked off right that they didn't win
(01:32:31):
that gaming as Nashville and keep thewinning streak going. But Miami's right there
ahead of them in the supporters Shieldrace, and certainly you know that's a
goal. And last year so oftwhen we talked about all the different trophies
that were there for the taking, there's still three trophies for the taking this
year for FC Cincinnati and one ofthose is a supporter shield, So how
did they come out? And they'rehungry, and like you said, it's
(01:32:53):
a tough stretch of games over thetwo weeks with four and three and eight
to get it starting. But thegood news is, I mean, you
have the longest trip of the yearand going to San Jose, but it's
against the San Jose team it's beendown this year, so hopefully that means
a good result. But look,we thought you can never just count on
it. We thought it'd be agood result against Nashville and it wasn't because
(01:33:14):
they've been down this year. Soit's gonna be a tough game I think
at San Jose next week. Butthen you come home and you play Philadelphia,
and you play New England Philadelphia, and we'll be missing a couple of
guys, you know, and they'vebeen trying to find the rhythm in New
England's been a bit of a messthis season. So I think there's certainly
opportunity to get rolling again and startto put another win straight together. And
(01:33:34):
I'm sure when Pat meets with themedia next week, he'll be like,
look, we're gonna tell you oneat a time and focus all our attention
on San Jose, but it's veryhelpful after that longest trip of the year
to have the next two at home, and I think f CCINIWNI will position
themselves to have a strong month ofJune and turn the calendar into July,
because remember, after that San Josematch year, at the halfway mark exactly
(01:33:55):
of the season, you're sixteen tothirty four right now, so one morning,
you're exactly halfway there, and Ithink this team is just going to
get stronger, and then the windowopens up in July, so you know,
certainly the possibility that Chris albright isgoing to reinforce and strengthen this team
at that point as well. Ifyou were Chris albrighton and you're looking over
this mini buy or this international break, if there is a component of this
(01:34:17):
team or an area of this teamthat perhaps you would look to upgrade,
where would that be In your opinion, I think it's in the attack.
I think that's kind of always beenthe focus since the beginning of the season.
And obviously they went and got KevinKelsey and we've seen, you know,
pretty instant returns on a guy who'venever played a major league soccer before
with already three goals in his briefMLS career, so I think that's been
(01:34:42):
a big positive. And obviously we'veseen Sergio Santos come on and be able
to contribute. As of late,Dota Balezuela has been involved as a striker,
but he's not truly a striker. And I think the big question will
be, well, Aaron Bupenza comingback from his jaw injury, how will
he be involved, if at all, or how quickly can he be involved?
And then is Chris out searching foranother attacking player. And you know
(01:35:08):
there was reports what maybe a monthago or so, it was about the
time that that Aaron broke his jawthat you know, there's reports that that
Chris might be trying to move onfrom Aaron. I don't I don't know
if that's factual or not. Youknow, if if they do move on
from Arion Upenza, that opens upa designated player slot and obviously you know,
a different profile player. But Ithink whether or not it's a DP
(01:35:29):
style or a DP designation, youknow, for an incoming attacking player,
they need to find one more attackingpiece. Cory Beett's been hurt, don't
know if he'll be back for SanJose yet, We'll wait and see kind
of how he progresses over the nextten days, not even ten days,
I guess eight days until that game. But you know that that I think
is constantly under evaluation. I thinkthe back line is in great shape,
(01:35:51):
and I think the midfield's in prettygood shape. Maybe you know, if
you added a piece in the midfieldto be a depth piece, because Pavel
Book and Obin a Wobedo have beenfantastic. I was a Luco's the ringing
MVP ahead of them, So you'renot bringing to anybody who's gonna be ahead
of Lucco. So I really thinkthat that striker position is getting a lot
of attention right now, and thatChris is constantly trying to make this team
(01:36:15):
better and we'll find ways to dothat. I know you just highlighted it
with someone there. At this pointof the season, if you are Pat
Noon and if you're Chris Albright, are you happy with the health relatively of
this f C Cincinnati squad. Yeah, I think for the most part,
I think that Corey Baird injury hasbeen a little bit frustrating in trying to
get him back and losing him obviously, because Corey's played a lot of minutes
(01:36:40):
now eight hundred and eighteen minutes throughtwelve appearances and then ten starts. I
think if this break felt the perfecttime for you, Yakubo, the expectation
would be that he is available forSan Jose. And we all know how
valuable Uya has been as a SwissArmy knife in the lineup. And you
know, obviously Aaron Beppenza has hisinjured jaw, broken jaw that is continuing
to heal up, and you knowthey'll see when exactly he can be available.
(01:37:03):
I think we'll know more, probablyin a week or so. You
know, do we see him herein the month of June and how well
is he healing up? Butther thanthat, you're in good shape. And
you know, the only other playeris missing is Miles Robinson and he's out
of the national team, so he'sgonna get big minutes with the Stars and
Stripes, hopefully over over the courseof the month and into July if they
make a run. So you know, that's the only player in the town.
(01:37:25):
But that goes back to where westarted and the opportunities for Nick Haglin
and kith Keller. I was Iwas perusing the club's website and I saw
an article from Carter Chapley about RomanCelentano, and Roman Celentano is one of
those players that did miss time duringthis season. But I was shocked to
learn that it's essentially been the spanof about seven years, Roman Celentano has
(01:37:46):
gone from not even being a competitivesoccer player to now one of the most
highly awarded and and I guess oneof the best goalkeepers in the MLS at
this point. When you think ofthat span over a seven year span,
how incredible is it for what fC Cincinnati has found at the back end
(01:38:08):
the heart of that defense in RomanCelentano. Yeah, it's really impressive,
Tony. You know, this isa guy. First of all, he's
just a great dude, a greatguy you want to hang out with,
have a chat with. You know, very humble. You've not one of
these goalkeepers of screens and yells athis teammates when the goal was allowed.
You know, they try to fixit or figure out where the mistake was.
(01:38:30):
But he's very level headed, andI think that's why he's had the
success he's had. For my money, he certainly is one of the best
in the league. I hope he'srewarded with an All Star spot this year.
We'll see how that shakes out.I think you make the short trip
up to Columbus participate in that inlate July. But ye know, I
mean what uh, you know,I don't want to call it a strike
(01:38:51):
of luck, because a lot ofrecruiting and scouting and all of that went
into deciding to draft him. Butwhat a you know, fortunate you know
decision that that turns out to bein drafting him, and and you know
the misfortune of Alec Cannon being hurtand warming up for a US Open game
(01:39:13):
in which he was going to bethe backup to Roman who was starting,
you know, and and then Romanstepping in, and then making that decision
because Roman was the number three atthe time, but they decided to skip
Kenth Vermire and give Roman a chanceagainst the l AFC of all of all
teams. And he makes a bunchof saves, and Alex you know,
misfortune continues, uh to where heended up with COVID during his rehab and
(01:39:36):
and Roman starts seven games and neverlooks back. And I mean, Cincinnati
is so so fortunate to have himhere as that goalkeeper, uh you know
that who hopefully will maintain his successand be one of the best in Major
League Soccer for years to come.Lastly on the squad, Tommy, this
break Kevin Kelsey was an addition thatwas made. And you know, here's
(01:39:58):
a young guy coming in and he'skind of coming in mid stretch of the
season. They have the opening becausePen's is not playing. Can he just
fill the minutes he's done more thanPhil minutes. He scored three goals already
for FC Cincinnati, that's tied forthird most in the club. How much
now do you expect to see himgrow even more? Having a little bit
(01:40:20):
more of a break things can calmdown a little bit and really focus on
utilizing him even more in this attackthan he already has been. Yeah,
I think it'll be big. Ithink the more he becomes comfortable will only
benefit FC's Incinnati. So that isgreat news and I think probably just breaking
this week right now, like you'reasking me before, about the development and
(01:40:41):
the time to get different guys minutesin training and get more chemistry with his
teammates. For a guy like KevinKelsey, he's only been in for you
know what a month. I thinkthat this week is probably benefiting him more
than anybody else to spend time withLucho and see how he's going to be
setting him up. I think thisthree match stretch coming out of the break
(01:41:01):
in eight days with San Jose andthen home Philadelphia and home New England should
be a great opportunity see Kelsey continuedto develop, and I'm excited to see
him continue to develop on what hecan do out there. So I think
it's a very exciting young player whohas loads of room to grow, but
is also very talented and everybody shouldbe really excited to watch that throughout the
(01:41:23):
course of the season. Tommy, before I let you go, I would
be remissed. Ye. We areon the heels now of the first two
installments of the Ohio Cup, andthat will now pit right now the red
hot Cincinnati Reds winners of five ina row versus the team with the third
best record in all of Major LeagueBaseball, the Cleveland Guardians. Are you
(01:41:46):
surprised? And I think third bestrecord, anyone would be surprised. They
lose Shane Bieber early in the year. Are you surprising how well Cleveland has
played this year, and I guessthe frustrating part to be four in twenty
one and only four games clear theRoyals, who have been fantastic as well
this season. Yeah, I thinkif you're saying that Shane Bieber's gonna have
(01:42:08):
the injury that I did, andyou're gonna look at the Guardians and be
in that position on what is it, June eighth today, June seventh,
right, that that would be thecase, Like you take it, but
I don't think anybody would have expectedit. Then if you go look at
the lineup and the lineup card comesout, you shoot batting averages, you're
like, this is this team's infirst place and one of the best teams
(01:42:29):
in Major Baseball this year. That'scertainly a bit surprising, but their pitching
has obviously been very, very good. I don't know if you saw the
wild real that somebody made that's beengoing around about the wind at the stadium
with some of the adjustments they madein right field, Ye go find it
or I'll send it to you.I don't know what the truth is to
that. You have to get somepeople way smarter than me to figure that
out. But it's an interesting theory, and I mean there is something to
(01:42:53):
it, and with the home runsthat have been the right this year,
but man, they've been fun towatch. It's a good group. Jose
Ramirez is on another level and continuesto be. And i'd imagine this too
again, you know, kind ofbreaks my a whttle bit. But I
got family obligations Tuesday and Wednesday,so I can't make it to either of
them this week, just in anunusual conflict. But no, I think
they're gonna be two great battles downthere at Great American Ballpark to get this
(01:43:15):
series started, and you know, then want to dial up in Cleveland later
in the season and then see seewho gets the bragging right. Twenty one
and eight are the Guardians at homeright now todd for the best record in
all of Major League Baseball. TommyG the Voice of FC Cincinnati. Tom
you sound rested, you're recouping, you're refreshed. Enjoy the rest of your
break. We'll talk again next weekand plenty more to come this season on
(01:43:38):
FC Cincinnati. Thank you, asalways for your time. I appreciate you
guys, Tony. Best of lucknext week. Oh yeah, you know,
best of lot we look forward tohearing updates and names and all that
kind of jazz and yeah, thinkingabout you and a family. Enjoy it.
Great moment for you guys, andwe'll talk soon. All right,
Tommy, thank you as always, have a great week you too, buddy.
(01:43:59):
Yeah, sir, that's Tom thevoice of FC Cincinnati, joining us
as he does each and every Friday. We got to get to a break
plenty more still on hour number three, since he three to sixty, a
service of Penn Station on ESPN fifthback on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
(01:44:21):
Let's get down, Let's get downto business. Give you one month
night, one more night to guardthis. We've had a million million nights
just like this, So let's getdown. Let's get down to business.
I feel like that's what we've doneall day today, just getting down the
business on a Friday afternoon. Sincehe three sixty thanks to Penn Station.
(01:44:45):
As we roll along here a couplemore segments, Moaggar will join us,
Quick hits, locks of the Weekendand so much more. Find this song
because it's been stuck in both ofour heads today. Yep, standing on
it. Maybe not, Let's getdown, Let's stay done business. We
have a few minutes here, ashorter segment here, we'll get back on
the clock. We got time fora phone call, Mike. What's up,
(01:45:08):
Mike? How are you? Hey? Guys? Kind of what all
over the place today? Man?Oh man, pretty pretty I can't think
of the word sorry, Hey,porzingis where did this goop? Unbelievable?
So either they either they either hesaid, well, you know, I
(01:45:30):
don't know if I'll be able toplay. Either he's been staying in great
shape or he may not be availablefor them. He might have been one
sore puppy dog today. So it'sone or the other, right, And
the unique part is they went intolast night saying that he doesn't even know
how it's going to respond being ina game like setting, and he did
nothing about easing into it. Hewas phenomenal on offense, he was phenomenal
(01:45:55):
on defense. He changed the tunein the setting of that game so much
in the first quarter last night.I truly don't think the Dallas Mavericks expected
him to be at that level. No, No, I mean that their
coach had to just be flipping outand not prepared for it. I mean,
I've never seen Porzingis play like that, and they talked about it on
(01:46:16):
the broadcast of The Dangers with poorZingis and even Al Horford was hitting shots
early. But the danger is youcan't help off because they shoot it so
prolifically beyond the arc. There's noone in that lineup you can help off
of. So you have to beresponsibly sound defensively, and if not,
they're gonna drive and make the correctpass. And they were hitting shots last
(01:46:38):
night, Yeah, and they'd beyou know, like you were saying through
the when they went through the WinternDivision. They lost the first game against
all those pretty good teams. Yeah, however they weren't playing Boston. None
of those teams were Boston correct. And so I don't know, but Kyrie,
you've got to show up. Youshould have just stayed home last night.
(01:47:00):
They got they got nothing from Kyrie. And if you're going to compete
in the series, if you're theDallas Mavericks, your role players have to
they don't have to be better thanBoston's role players. But Sam Houser out
played pretty much every other role playerfor the Dallas Mavericks last night. They
got next to nothing from PJ.Washington. They got really nothing from either
(01:47:24):
bigs. Tim Hardaway Junior was useless. They and I will say this with
Dallas. You mentioned they drop alot of game ones. Jason Kidd has
been phenomenal at making adjustments. Ijust don't know what the adjustment is against
that Boston lineup other than hoping they'renot hitting you know, forty percent of
the threes they take. Yeah,I agree. I don't think there's one
(01:47:44):
he can too, no matter howsmart he is. Hey, this Hurley
thing real quick. I hope DanDan Hurley is a smart guy. You
know what he's doing. But I'msure he's aware that they've have seven coaches
since Phil Jackson left and uh,and that's iconic franchise. But you might
(01:48:05):
go in there. And plus, they got no room to pick up nobody
else. No, they got noroom, none, zero. They are
they are strapped with roster construction andthat they are. And so I think
Dan Hurley, I hope he givesthat a little bit of the fount and
I know he will, but god, you know, it's got to be
tempting to be offered to do that. It's got to be anyway, Thanks
(01:48:28):
guys, min you Mike, appreciateit. Thank you, Tony. We
have a couple of pieces of informationthat are breaking now. And you know
what, I don't think we've donethis in a while. What if we
just hit the sounder real quick?Oh I'm intrigued. All right, what
do you want first? You seebasketball or Red's baseball? You see basketball,
(01:48:50):
of course. Olivia Ray from Channelfive WLWT is reporting that Covington Catholic
is targeting you see assistant Jake Wowas its next head basketball coach. Thelan
is a covecath grad who spent thelast three seasons on UC's staff under Wes
Miller, most recently as the directorof basketball operations. Charlie Clifford chimes in
(01:49:15):
that Thelan's impressive resume includes being hiredby Tom Crean at Georgia at the age
of just twenty five, and hecould have valuable head coaching experience at a
prestigious prep program in Cuvecat. Sosome interesting news there out of Cuvecath and
obviously you see as well as faras the Reds are concerned. The Reds
(01:49:40):
announced that after last night's game theyhave returned left hander Brandon Williamson from his
rehab assignment, and that rehab assignmenthas now stopped. David Bell said yesterday
that Williamson is not there yet, still working his way back. We have
seen this a couple of times nowwhere pitchers have had their rehab assignment stopped.
(01:50:02):
I Jabou is one of them.He ended up having surgery. Sam
Maul was one of them. Hehas pitched well since he's returned to the
big league. So Brandon Williamson probablynot going to be the guy in the
foreseeable future to get that fifth starterspot once Graham Ashcraft goes to Triple A.
But Brandon Williamson has returned from hisrehab assignment and his rehab assignment has
(01:50:24):
stopped, Okay, something to obviouslykeep an eye on, especially with Graham
Ashcraft going down to Triple A aswell. So interesting the Williamson dynamic for
all the points that we just talkedabout in the setting of the Graham Ashcraft
struggles makes it very interesting. Iwouldn't be opposed to a bullpen start where
(01:50:45):
you know, they found a littlebit something there where Suiter takes the start
and then it's Martinez out of thebullpen, because that's where we've seen Martinez
be the most efficient to this point. But you know, the good news
is if you're a Cincinnati Reds fan, if you're looking ahead now on at
least the rest of this slate againstthe Chicago Cubs, you get Lodolo,
(01:51:09):
Abbot and Montas. That's a prettygood setting. That's a pretty good rotation.
Maybe you just skip that start andyou go right back to Green and
Lodolo against the Guardians. It'll beinteresting to watch, but nonetheless something to
keep an eye on for the CincinnatiReds. We'll break one more time,
we'll come back, kind of puta ball on everything we have and look
(01:51:31):
forward to quick hits and locks ofthe weekend with Moegar to close things out,
since he three to sixty, aservice of Penn Station on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Lowegar realityis they're probably not good enough. He
dissects the local sports scene. They'renot consistent enough. The way up fourth
grader dissects Acron not reliable. LoegerToday at three on ESPN fifteen thirty,
(01:51:57):
The A Strong Wine. I gottahave some fun tonight, all right,
welcome back Since the three sixty ESPNfifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, and thanks
(01:52:19):
to our friends at Penn Station.Uh the fresh cut fries, freshly squeezed
lemonade, hot grilled subs, nothingbetter. While we're at it, Thanks
to everyone who makes this show possibleeach and every day of each and every
week. Thank you to the callersand the listeners and all of the talkbackers
uh as well. I I don'tknow, Austin if we've missed anything on
(01:52:43):
the docket today. You know,Charlie kind of alluded to a four man
rotation? Are you are you goodif if the Brandon Williamson setback continues?
Are you good riding out of fourman rotation if you're the Reds? Because
of how good the four have been? Yeah, I think I think I'm
okay with that, And especially withthe amount of off days that they do
have coming up in the near future, and we're about a month away from
(01:53:09):
the All Star break, that wouldgive them some time to figure some things
out. So yeah, I don'tI don't have a problem with that.
If All Star voting concluded today, who's the All Star for the Reds?
Has Ellie done enough? I knowthe numbers, home run numbers, the
stolen based numbers, I mean ifyou're in Cincinnati. I think he gets
(01:53:30):
the vote nationally. Has he doneenough? Probably, just based off name
recognition, I would assume he would. I mean, all stars are dumb
because fans vote, and that shouldn'tbe allowed. But uh yeah, I'd
say probably Ellie. He has somany wild plays that if you're just a
baseball fan and you follow baseball accounts, you have to see Ellie all the
(01:53:51):
time. M hm. He's justhe's never out of sight, out of
mind in anything that he's Doings mentionedearlier as Reds, by the way,
have the tenth, thirteenth, andtwentieth off this month. I thought you
were gonna say a lot. They'realso off on the first of July,
(01:54:13):
so and then obviously the break beginson the fifteenth, so four more off
days between now and the alst NickLodolo justin Steele tonight at a Great American
Ballpark, seven to ten, firstpitch, Real Real. Briefly mentioned earlier.
The Reds now third in the NLCentral, one game behind the Cubs,
(01:54:35):
who they play three more times thisweekend, now six and a half
back of the Milwaukee Brewers, onegame out of that final. I'm sorry,
a half game out of that finalslot in the wild Card. For
the rest of Major League Baseball, the Reds still on the second longest winning
streak because the Yankees just keep winning. They have won eight in a row.
They are now forty five and nineteenon the season. The Guardians also
(01:55:00):
have forty wins forty and twenty one, and the Mariners Austin. The Mariners,
winners of eight of their last ten, thirty six and twenty eight,
have a five game lead in theAL West. Philadelphia Phillies' second most wins
in all of baseball at forty four, seven and a half clear of the
Braves. It's still the Brewers fiveand a half clear of the Chicago Cubs,
(01:55:21):
and the Dodgers, now thirty ninewins, eight games clear of the
San Diego Padres. The craziest thinghere, Baltimore at thirty nine and twenty
two would be leading the AL West, would be leading the NL Central,
would be leading the NL West. They just happen to be chasing the New
York Yankees, who are still doingthis without Garrett Cole correct incredible. I
(01:55:45):
believe he made one rehab start.Yeah, so far. By the way,
Tonight's Game two guys that are familiarwith each team. Cubs have had
some success against Nicolodolo in their careers, and the Reds have had some success
against Justin Steel. Jonathan India andTyler Stevenson both have homered off of Steel
in their careers. Steer in nineat bats is hitting over five hundred against
(01:56:10):
them, Stevenson over six hundred andthirteen at bats. Jamber Candelario won for
three with an RBI against him inhis career as well. So some some
familiarity and some success against Justin Steelefor these Red Legs in the past.
There it is all right, Mowager, when we get back Quick Hits Locks
of the weekend, since he threeto sixty, a service of Penn Station
(01:56:30):
on ESPN fifteen thirty, Last PontenYears on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports
Station. It's time for Sincy threesixty Quick Hits on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Welcome back, since He three sixtyESPN fifteen thirty. Tony Pike, Mowager,
Danny Forts, and Kenyan Martin allhanging with us today and it's quick
(01:56:55):
Hits. What's going on? What'son your Friday show today? Well?
Nick not Nick Ldlop thinking Sam Lucierais going to be with us at three
twenty because I love talking pitching withhim and there's lots of different pitching topics
that we're going to discuss. Also, people are freaking out Joe Burrow might
(01:57:16):
be on the cover of Mad.And here's what I want to know.
Are you really worried about a cursefor a player that's always hurt? Maybe
it's a reverse car exactly reverse curse. Can I ask a question to you
guys? You guys go to baseballgames? Yes, I've been. Yeah.
So I had some plans last nightthat at the last minute fell through,
and I had the swath of time. I had nothing to do,
(01:57:38):
know where to be. So Ibought a cheapie and I go down to
the ballpark, buy a bag ofpeanuts, buy a beer. I'm just
sitting there hanging out. I'm surroundedby some enthusiastic Reds fans, probably thanking
you for all the money you've madehim. No, no one said a
word to me, which was great. Were joined a nice, peaceful night
at the ballpark. We're having alot of fun. But you know,
when you go, I went bymyself which I do on occasion. You
(01:58:00):
you hear more and you observe more. Right, you're you're a little bit
more aware of the conversations around you, not that you're eavesdropping. So in
the sixth Inning last night, Ithought I was on the set of an
adult movie because the collective orgasm thateverybody had when Jacob Herdibes laid down a
sacrifice. Oh my goodness. Nowunderstand about forty five minutes prior Ellie de
(01:58:24):
la Cruz almost hit a ball toa Highland heights. Yes, and you
know people were excited, but nearme when Herdibes laid down that, and
it was a good bun. Iwas it? It moved the runners over,
It served its purpose. The runnerswould have scored anyway. Sacrifice bunts
are stupid. But can someone explainto me why the sacrifice bun elicits these
(01:58:45):
reactions that made it sound like somebodyhad a hand down their pants. Nope,
I got goosebumps thinking about it.I mean it was like you,
I thought, like something crazy washappening behind me, like Lyn Caron,
Like it's a sacrifice. They justmade an out right, they didn't score.
What do we it was oh,oh, what a bunch. Like,
(01:59:06):
how about forty five minutes ago whenthe dude hit the ball five hundred
feet you weren't that excited for that. What is it about a successfully executed
sacrifice bunt that just seems to reallyget in the fields for some people.
I'll tell you what it is.It's because it reminds people of days gone
by, and everybody wants to livein the past. Everybody wants things that
(01:59:28):
used to happen to still happen, and a lot of the old timers that
are Reds fans want, you know, the good old days to return.
And back when the Reds were winning, they were bunting a lot because that's
what baseball was like back in theday. And everybody wants those days back.
So they tie sacrifice bunting and thesuccess of that to the success of
the team, not the fact thatthey had like six Hall of famers.
(01:59:48):
I like thought, the guy behindme for a second, like past a
kidney stone, Yeah, I meanreally, oh my oh, And then
like for an inning and a half, that's the only nobody could talk about.
I mean, the conversations the ball. It's like, man, tell
you what clad came to the gamethat we saw her to be slid down
some bunts. You imagine on theon the the anniversary of Dela Cruz and
(02:00:13):
his call up to the Reds wherehe hits one hundred and fifteen mile hour
ball off the bat. You keepthe ticket stub last night because of the
heart Abe's sack bunt. Well yeah, I mean, you know, I
if it's like and you know you'vegone through this, you take your kid
to the game the first time toget that certificate. Oh yeah. I
felt like the fan Accommodation's booth wasgoing to be stormed by some of these
folks that I was surrounded by lastnight who wanted a certificate to say they
(02:00:35):
saw you do dumb stuff and itworks, Jacob herbaby doing dumb stuff,
laid down and again like it wasa good bun. Yeah, bad strategy,
but fine, good bunt. Butoh boy, you you would have
thought like you would have thought therewas like a parade of naked women running
through the aisleways you'd have thought aCeltics fan was watching Porzingi in the first
quota. I like, literally,I'm kind of like, what am I
(02:00:58):
did? We all win some thing? If a Red laid down a sacrifice
bunch. It's a promotion liked,do we put a car or something like?
What happened? And I cannot emphasizethis enough. When Dela Cruz hit
the home run, I was goingcrazy, Oh that's kind of neat.
And then three innings later sack bun. Oh boy, yeah, So I
want to find out today what isit about the sacrifice bunt that gets into
(02:01:24):
your feels? As the kids say, I think the Reds should do a
promotion with somebody that's not Toyota,a competing car dealer, maybe somebody that
makes evs. And you know, every time the Reds lay down a successful
sacrifice bunt, they give away atruck or something along those lines, because
they're both about as likely as somebodyhitting that sign in between the smokestacks.
(02:01:45):
They almost never happened. I mean, then it turned into like this conversation
about some of the best bunters theReds have hats, So I could I
know that Norris Hopper cal laid outabout like Norse Hopper sucked and kidd be
I mean good players they've no you'regonna try? Is that it starts a
conversation every year and then well,I don't know where it's at, but
the All Star game where they dobunting as a competition in Japan, no
(02:02:05):
things. So anyway, I wantthe answer to that today. Sure,
what what is it about the sacrifice? That's what it sounds like last night?
Or jam stand By legitimately thought Iwas on the set there's the heart
of adult make some money, Heydegenerates, it's off the weekend since he
(02:02:38):
Dixie High and or Mitchell and alwaysonline since he shirts dot com. Uh,
he did say last night, Sothe home run that Ellie hit destroyed
somebody's beer cup. Yeah, andhe said that that Beard died a hero.
Well done. Yeah, great call, great calls. So what was
(02:03:00):
the sac bun call? There wass collected themselves and Barry looked at each
other and had a moment. Youwant to talk about it? You want
to talk about it. I've neverheard people so excited about anything in my
life. I have a seven yearold kid. If Jojo Seawah showed up
to our house, she wouldn't beas excited as these dudes were about the
(02:03:21):
sacrifice bunt last night? Can youexplain Jojo seaway to me? Well,
I can't. But she was likea kid singer, and now she's gone
bad, so we're not allowed tolet her listen to JoJo's. But she's
an those. She's actually moved onto Taylor Swift and so like this morning,
I hear her in her room gettingdressed and it's like Taylor Swift and
we're driving to drove her to camp, and I go, what's your favorite
(02:03:44):
Taylor Swift song? She's like allof them. So Tony asked me that
earlier. It's National Donut Day.He asked me what my favorite donut was.
I said all of them. No, I said all of them.
It's exactly what I said. Youcan't beat a what along John say.
It's hard to beat a good longJohn like the Cardinals tonight against the Colorado
Rockets. Night took the Rockies lastnuff and the Reds have been hammering left
(02:04:10):
handed pitchers recently. I think theycontinue it tonight. Yankees are a home
dog tonight with the best record inall of baseball? Can I just so
yesterday or two days ago, itwas one of the I I listened to
you guys, sorry about that. No, where was I I was having
lunch? No, it was notSkyline unfortunately, and they head on the
(02:04:33):
Colin Cowherd Show, and so heended up dude that he's what's the guy's
name, little buddy? Oh No, I never heard of him, Austin.
But they're like they're talking about bighe is reading the promo for like
Dodgers Yankees Big Series, and thenColin's like I was asking the end the
crew, like are they going tothat game this week? And they said
the tickets are too expensive? AndI'm going, you dope the games in
(02:04:54):
New York, right, So that'swhy people should listen to since three sixty
and not Colin, and Little Bussaid that's being said. Yeah, seven
and a half. I'll jump onDallas right now for Sunday. Yes,
I think they bounce back. Ithink Kid makes the adjustments. I don't
think price is on our I thinkBoston shoots as well. And as you
mentioned yesterday, let Boston get gameone, let everyone shift, and now
you buy the mAbs if you likehim in seven, thank you very much.
(02:05:17):
Uh Moe's next. He'll get y'allcut up on the red lineup today.
But who's gonna lay down a bunttonight? Santiago Espanol will lay down
the bun tonight. Herd a Beastis not in the starting lineup Santiago,
Espanol is he's playing second base.Jonathan India up in the line up in
the d eighth. Again, whatI'm calling it from Blake done tonight the
bunt. He makes his impact withthe Reds with a bunt. We're done,
(02:05:42):
Stuart Fairchild leadoff, Homer Odds. We're doing the whole Stewie long Balls
thing. Listen, there's a lotof dumb stuff. I say. Stuie
Longballs is not on that list.Stue long Ball sounds like the name of
a children's book, Stewe long ballotfor the kids. If you think India's
pissed they moved him up six, maybe you, guys feeling pretty good at
eight leave him in the eight holesincey three six thanks to a callers,
(02:06:04):
Listeners, talkbackers. Is there abaseball player who looks more like someone who
works at Jiffy Lube? There,Jonathan India. We're just gonna parlay this
into the next three. I haven'tbeen to a Jiffy Lube in a while,
have you? He went the highmileage? Sure? Jonathan? Here
you're hitting sixth tonight. We're gonnahave to We should do that one day
(02:06:24):
when the lineup comes out. Thisperson looks like they work where no might
do that today. It's a wholesegment. It's a Friday. Have a
great weekend, thanks to everyone thatmakes this show possible, and enjoy Moegar
for the next three hours on theMolegar Chefs. In fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports
