today, feeling good, It's Skylinetime. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station. Welcome in Happy Friday. It's since three sixty on ESPNY,
(01:00):
Cincinnati Sports Station, a service ofSkyline Chili. Thank you for joining us.
Happy to have you along. Wegot three hours to do this thing.
Five one three fifteen thirty called beinga part of the show or leave
us a talkback using the iHeartRadio app, which might be how you're listening anyway.
If that's the case, thank youfor listening. However, whenever you
do. So, it's Friday.Let's have some fun with it today.
(01:23):
Jum there, it is Giovanni Bernard. Let's start Austin, because I want
to thank our friends at Skyline Chili. But I also want to tell you
about a problem I'm having right now. Oh so I broke down and did
something that I said I'm I'm swearingagainst right now, okay, which is
(01:45):
door dash because like the baby wasborn and my wife and I we doordashed
a lot, and I DoorDash alot in the past, and I'm like,
man, it's just it's a lotof money to be to be spending.
Sure, So here's my problem. We talked about this yesterday. You
can door dash Skyline Chili. Oh, so at eleven fifteen I ordered Skyline
(02:09):
Chili and about three minutes before wewent on air, I got a phone
call. I didn't know the number, so it went to voicemail and it
was my dasher, right, andhe called and said, I went to
Skyline to pick up your order, but someone else has already taken it.
(02:30):
Oh, must have been by mistake. What do I do? I don't
know what to do in this situation. So I tried to cancel my order,
and on DoorDash it says it's toolate because the store has already major
order, so you don't get arefund. What do you do? It's
a great question, so we answeredone. I think it the responsibility falls
(02:54):
on the driver, Okay, youthink so? Yeah, he should be
able. He said he went thereand it wasn't there. He should be
able to do something in his appto like tell the people, did you
know I used to drive for DoorDashI didn't. Yeah, I did that
for a while when I first movedhere, with as much as I door
dashed. I'm surprised you never deliveredanything part of my three jobs that I
had at the time. Yeah, yeah, no, it's it's something that
(03:17):
you should be able to tell thepeople at DoorDash that there was a mistake.
Yeah. So hopefully that gets sortedout and by the time the show's
over, maybe I can have someSkyline Chili. More than anything, I
hope you get your skyline more thananything. Thanks to the folks at Skyline
Chili for being a part of theshow and helping out with our number one,
(03:37):
which we will dive into a lotfrom the Cincinnati Reds. Their win
yesterday a win, a series win, they take three out of four from
the Colorado Rockies, which means athree and four homestand currently after the sweep
of the Yankees, So where doesthat put things going into tonight? Three
(03:58):
more before the All Star Break,an opportunity against a bad team in the
Miami Marlins to maybe make up someground. Where does that leave things for
the Reds? I would say,and I know we even talked about minimum
Austin two of three and this series. Yeah, two of three, I
would almost say the minimum is asweep. Yeah, but two of three
(04:20):
you at least feel okay going intothe break. Yeah, you know you
would be if if they take twoor three, they'd be forty seven and
fifty going into the break. I'llbe all right with that. Looking what's
on the other side of the break, we'll get to all of that today.
We'll talk about Hunter Green and TylerStevenson and Spencer Steer, Jonathan India,
Reese Hines, and so much more. We'll get to that an hour
(04:40):
number one. We'll look around thestandings where things sit going into the final
series before the All Star break. But really, before we get into anything
else from yesterday, let's review thetop stories from yesterday, brought to you
by our friends at Klaus Roofing Systemof Cincinnati, the Trust Local Roofing and
Gutter Company. Visit Krscincey dot com. It's KRS since he with a y
(05:04):
dot com. Other things that happenedyesterday. Austin Paul Skeens had a no
hitter in seven through seven innings. He did Paul Skeins ninety nine pitches.
Ooh boy, Paul Skeins is goingto be a problem for a long time.
Well, just moments before we cameon the air tone it was announced
(05:26):
Paul Skeins will start, Wow,the National League All Star Game. Well
it's you know, both leagues playingthe All Star Game. He'll start for
the National League. That's crazy.Paul Skeins, after I believe eleven twelve
big league starts, is going tostart the All Star Game on Tuesday night
in Arlington, Texas. Now,there was a little bit of pushback yesterday
(05:46):
because at ninety nine pitches, peoplewondered should he have been able to go
out and try to continue that inthe eighth His manager said he saw signs
that it looked like Paul Skeins waswearing down, and obviously players safety was
at the right move for a playerthat young to pull him after seven innings
and ninety nine pitches of no hitball, Yeah, I think it was.
I mean, this is the futureof their franchise, to say the
(06:10):
least, and you know their bullpenhas not been very good. It was
a scoreless game, so that part, I think is interesting. Or even
if it wasn't scoreless, it waslike a one run game. Nothing yet
yeah, one nothing so like Iunderstand where if you're a Pirates fan thinking,
you know, our bullpen stinks,I don't want to take this guy
out of the game. He's nasty, but also understanding that ninety nine pitches.
(06:32):
Derek Shelton, their manager, saidhe looked tired and they have to
play the long game, and hey, they beat the Brewers again. He
has started eleven games. He hassix and zero on the season with a
one nine zero ERA. It's prettygood. He's only started eleven games and
yet already eighty nine strikeouts, elevenof those coming yesterday. He is he's
(06:56):
been phenomenal. Yeah, the wayhe is so good at two or three
pitches that all look the same.Yeah, all different velocities, all different
movements, and I mean it's hardenough to catch up tow one hundred and
three mile an hour fastball. Ithas been interesting though, a couple of
times where he has had these. He was pulled after six no hit innings
earlier in his career in one ofhis first few starts. Now seven no
(07:19):
hit innings he gets pulled. Yeah, he has a ton of those strikeouts,
eleven strikeouts yesterday. That's part ofthe reason why you can't keep him
in the game for so long isbecause he's he's not getting any contact.
He's just striking guys out, goingdeep into counts. But I think it's
a good move. I would havesaid that if if David Bell did that
(07:42):
to Hunter Green, I would havesaid, that's the right move. Actually,
Hunter Green nowadays, i'd say lethim go, see what happens.
But Hunter Green in his first tenstarts, yeah, you can pull him,
you know. I I'm so impressedon the Ski standpoint of like every
start, when he's in the sixthor seventh, the whole stadium is locked
(08:05):
in and they know he's kind ofprobably the last batter. He makes it
a point to go and dominate thelast batter. He wants to be just
as strong with the last batter ashe is with the first batter. Paul
Skians living up to the hype anmore. I remember at the beginning of
the season there was some belief outthere that the Pirates could be much like
what the Reds were last year.Oh, and I think we're seeing that
(08:28):
they're maybe not quite in the bestspot or in the same spot as the
Reds were at this time last year. In terms of their win loss record,
but the excitement and the energy aroundthat franchise right now and some of
the environments when they've been in Pittsburgh. It's been a while since they've been
good, kind of like the Redsten twelve years, and the environments around
(08:48):
that city in that ballpark when thePirates are starting to do well again,
has been really fun to watch. And they I think they're eerily similar to
what the Reds are. I meanthe last year, they're the Reds without
the twelve game winning streak right nowpretty much. Yeah, you know of
where they sit. And if you'refollowing along with Pittsburgh, what else could
(09:09):
you ask for? With your finalthree before the break, they get three
against the White Sox. If theywin those three, they are five hundred
at the All Star break in Pittsburgh. Yeah, with a lot of momentum
and a lot of optimism for thesecond half of the season. Don't look
now, but here come the ChicagoCubs. Yeah, they figured something out.
I hate that they've won four gamesin a row. They have the
(09:30):
same record as the Reds. Yeah, their run differential is almost even now,
and we've talked about that a lot, especially with I know you love
the Pythagorean win loss. Yes,their Pythagorean win loss is starting to equal
out to what their run differential is. So the Cubs are showing up.
They got a big weekend series goinginto the break with the Saint Louis Cardinals.
(09:52):
If you look at the NL Centralas a whole, forty nine losses
put you in the cellar of theNL Central. In the NL West,
the Rockies have sixty one losses, the Miami Marlins sixty one losses, in
the cellar of the East, Oaklandsixty losses, the White Sox sixty eight,
and the Toronto Blue Jays have fiftylosses. So it's been a pretty
(10:15):
competitive balanced NL Central. Saint Louis, somehow, some way is four games
over five hundred, and that justblows my mind because how bad Goldschmid has
been. And they've lost two gamesin a row and they've they've dealt with
some pitching. So Saint Louis always, always, always seems like they are
going to be lurking at some point. So we'll look around. We'll get
(10:39):
into the reds here when we getback. But did you see last night
the gentleman that caught the eohanne OSuarez home run ball. I did see
this, unbelievable. He made awager before the game on Suarez to Homer,
which is, if you're picking playersto hit a home run in a
(11:00):
game, you're already living, rightif they're hitting home runs. This gentleman
caught caught the Suarez home run ball. He bet on Suarez to Homer,
and Suarez homered and he caught theball. That's so cool. I mean,
once in a lifetime easily. Ohyeah, we won't hear the story
like that again. And he madefour hundred bucks off of it, a
(11:24):
four hundred dollars home run catch.A four hundred dollars catch of a home
run. Good for him for livingright? Oh? You know, I
think the argument could also be made, what are you doing betting fifty dollars
on Auhaneo Suez to hit a homerun? What does he know that no
one else does? Yeah? Andalso what's the rest of the bet slip?
Look like? How far deep areyou? That was a bottom of
the fifth home run from Suarez thatends up in a one nothing victory for
(11:46):
the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Braves unbelievable. Manti Kiffin has unfortunately passed away.
Yeah, legend, legend, formerNFL defensive coordinate and Austin. This is
a buzzword that affected a lot ofpeople in this city for a long time.
(12:07):
Architect of the Tampa two defense.Remember, we had to like dive
into what the Tampa two was andhow it was. This Like a lot
of people at the time when theBengals were struggling, thought that Tampa two
had just happened. No, No, it had been around for a while.
Montey Keivin had spent fifty years incoaching. He was the architect of
the Tampa two. That was thetwo thousand and two Tampa Super Bowl run.
(12:30):
Yeah, where that was made popular. So it didn't just come about
give Monte Kiff and his flowers andobviously a huge impact on the game of
football, did Monte Kiffin? Yeah? And I had just seen him.
I hadn't seen him, but Ihad just seen a post of him and
his whole family, including Lane Kiffin, who is his son, at the
(12:52):
Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, just a few weeks ago, and
they got to celebrate, like becausehe is a Hall of Famer and they
got to like go in and lookat some of his old stuff and see
the Hall of Fame and stuff. So I'm glad that that that memory was
something they were able to do overthe last couple of weeks with him and
his whole family before he passed away. So yeah, thoughts and prayers to
(13:13):
them. He's a legend in uh. In Wimbledon, Carlos Alcarez is through
to the finals and awaiting the winnerof Lorenzo Massetti and Novak Djokovic. I
can honestly tell you I have notwatched any of Wimbledon. Novak kind of
got an easy route into the semiesbecause the guy who was supposed to play
(13:35):
with drew so so it's a MickeyMouse title. If he wins, could
be okay, you think they'll lethim hear about that? I'll boo him
just for fun everybody. If everybodyelse is booing him, I'll bow him.
Everyone's booing him right now? Whatelse do we have? Oh?
I asked you today, I said, hey, you give you kind of
It's a Friday. We'd like tohave fun on this show. Have you
heard of any other stories, maybeeven outside of sports, that that we
(13:58):
could kind of go and run withtoday and without hesitation. You told me
you heard a story about a manbeing arrested with gerbils in his pants.
Well, and I'm like, man, you really had that ready to go.
Well, so I looked it up. Okay, Well, it said
the headline, man in leopard printpajamas found with gerbils in his pants after
(14:22):
business break ins. And this happenedin Columbus. And my question, immediately
is that makes sense in Columbus? You said, my question immediately, it's
Columbus. You clearly don't know whatyou're talking about. There's a video of
this guy sleeping on a park bench. My favorite thing about this story is
(14:46):
the sergeant's quote. He says, one day you're running after a suspect,
the next day, you're running afterferrets and bunnies. Sergeant Joe Albert told
WBNS, oh man, god blessour. Police officers also also set to
say this man in pajama it wasa onesie and the animals in the pockets
(15:09):
were found and not hurt. Oh, that's good, which is a huge
part of this story. No gerbilswere hurt in this arrest. That's good
to know. But this man hadbeen connected to some break ins. It
was at a pet Land store. There was an open door. It was
I mean it was a scene outof Jamunji, Austin. Of course,
(15:30):
birds, dogs, rabbits, gerbels, parrots all running free. They said,
uh huh, gerbils, rabbits andferrets all still waiting to be found.
There you go, man, Imean it's Friday, it's a summertime.
I mean, crime and Columbus hasgotten really out of hand. This
feels like a line crossed to bringthe gerbils and the ferrets and whatnot into
(15:52):
it. Yeah, incredible. Ishould say I didn't seek that story out,
you know, I I you didn'tto look anything up because you're got
it ready. So when I'm notworking on this show in the afternoons,
I have to do another show.I have to work on another show,
and the bread and butter of thatshow is stories like this. So I
(16:14):
heard it yesterday, Yeah, andI thought, okay, that's interesting.
And you said you had brought itup beforehand. Is there anything weird out
there as well? You know,as a matter of fact, there is,
yes. Down the road in Columbus. There are times where like again
on Fridays, it's a slower day. We talked a lot of Reds yesterday
they had a day game, sowe covered a lot of that during the
(16:34):
show. There's not a lot onthe NFL standpoint. We've exhausted a lot
of that. So it's like, all right, we get to talk to
Tommy g about FC Cincinnati today,we'll talk to Charlie Goldsmith about things going
on with the Reds and some ofthe Bengals, and we'll highlight more of
what the Reds are doing through thisfirst hour. But you got to fill
some spots too, and I guessmy only my thought was you didn't have
(16:57):
to dig very far to find that. Man, he's got that on the
ready and great producer. I respectthat content. Content content. Uh,
this is Cincy three sixty. Uh. That was a Friday much the segment
one. I would love to beeating Skyline Chili right now. That's not
(17:18):
the case. But we're a service, so you know, think about it
like this tone. You paid forsomebody's meal today. Someone out there,
they get to experience Skyline. Sowhoever got that three way light spaghetti,
two chili cheese sandwiches and the bigRed cream soda You're welcome. You know
what, you kind of deserve itfor not getting Cony's chili cheese. Man,
Okay, those are Cony. Surethere's some type of Conies. All
(17:41):
right, let's break, let's comeback. We will actually dive into recapping
the Reds game and the series againstthe Colorado Rockies, looking ahead to what's
next. Phone calls on the horizonas well. Five on three seven,
fifteen thirty, thanks to Skyline Chili, we are sinty three sixty on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Loaggarwas some pooling of the team last night.
(18:02):
When it comes to sports, thosethings he's got something to say for,
just natural byproducts and plenty of itof poor play. Loeggar today at
three on ESPN fifteen point thirty, the trusted leader in quality home services.
Since he here's Tyler Stephenson. Hestruck out with this same spot his first
(18:26):
time up. Runners it, secondand third, one out, and he
smokes this one down the right fieldline. It's got some distance. It's
call hey and fail this time athree run home run for Tyler Stephenson and
to answering the call three to nothing, read another three to two pitch from
(18:48):
Molina. This is Clawbert to leftfield. It's high, it's deep,
it's ota here Tyler Stephenson with atwo home run boardme he the Reds are
jumping all over the Rockies here inthe seven eight to one Reds. That
(19:10):
is five rbiyes on two swings ofthe bat for Tyler Stevenson. How about
that? How about that is rightfrom the cowboy Jeff Brantley. This is
Sincy three sixty. Thank you toSkyline Chiley on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports
Station. That that alone makes thisdecision very easy. Austin, As we
(19:30):
review yes the power player of yesterday'sgame, we look no further than yesterday's
designated hitter. Five RBIs a threerun home run, a two run home
run. It is Tyler Stevenson. That is brought to you by Cincinnati Tax
Resolution followed and powered not followed, powered by Tope Shelton. You'll get there.
Yeah, it's powered by herrind.I'm just following along with what the
(19:52):
Reds are doing right now. That'swinning Tyler Stevenson. You know what I
also appreciate what do you also appreciate? Home run trot when he rounds third
base and he acts like he catchesa pass from the third base coach.
Yeah, one of my favorite homerun trots out there. You know,
I don't remember the exact story behindhow that got started. Charlie might know
when we talked to him in abouthalf an hour, but I think Jr.
(20:14):
House was like a really accomplished quarterbackgrowing up. Oh and so they
do the play action with Jr.House and then he throws it over the
top, you know, suck thatdefense in yep, take the top off
the defense. Tyler Stevens also abig fan of his walk up music sky
Rockets in Flight Afternoon Delight. Ohit's a fantastic song. Enjoy everything that
(20:37):
Tyler Stevenson is doing at the dishright now, Austin. He's up to
two forty eight on the year.Ever since he had a kid, he's
been unreally, he's a super dad, man, He is a super dad,
you know. Jonathan India is arelatively new first time father. That's
true. He's also belting at twoseventy six. Jendy's sneaking up on to
He's been great. So yesterday athree hit day from Jonathan India, A
(21:00):
three hit day in the two holewithout Elie da La Cruz for Spencer Steeer.
He also added a stolen base.Jay moredded a hit, Stevenson had
two Reese Hines. We're gonna talkabout a little bit in the next segment,
and Santiago Espinal also with two hitdays. Espinal hits a home run.
And you mentioned acally Austin Wins.Austin playing really well. From a
(21:22):
catcher standpoint, you gotta wonder ifhe pushes Luke Maylee at all. Yeah,
you would think, I mean, defensively, I would imagine they're about
the same. Melee might have aslight edge, but Wins has played really
well, and he's just much morecompetitive at the plate. Yeah, just
generally, as much like he knowswhat he's doing at the plate. He's
been around a little bit. SoI think that's an interesting decision for the
(21:44):
Reds to have Malee of course notgoing to be back until after the All
Star break dealing with that. Wasit a herniated disk or something in his
back, some sort of back injury. But you know, I was thinking
about this yesterday too. We giveNick Kral a lot of you know,
heat, and we have been prettycritical of this organization, but Santiago Espinal
(22:07):
was the first move they made wheneverybody went down. And he is by
no means playing at a Cooperstown level. But he has been a serviceable,
good backup player. He's got areally good glove. Hasn't been perfect,
He's got a really good glove. He's got five home runs and twenty five
runs a bat it end this year, six dolen bases, he scored sixteen
(22:30):
runs. His batting average is sittingat just two oh three. But when
you look at it kind of inthe grand scheme of the last week,
he's hitting over three hundred. Inthe last thirty games, he's hitting two
twenty. I think you can livewith that as a backup player that plays
once or twice a week. Igive credit to Nick Kral and credit to
Santiago espinalf for carving out a fine, serviceable season. Yeah, one hundred
(22:53):
percent, I completely completely agree onthat sense of all the and we talked
about a lot. There's fourteen hitsin yesterday's game. I know it's a
small sample size. Austin. AustinSlater's early returns have not been positive as
a red yes in the field, and at the dish, and something that
(23:15):
I think is going to be veryinteresting to watch in the second half of
the season. Is there any typeof LEAs with Noelve Marte? Right,
another zero for four day, twomore strikeouts. He looks completely lost at
the dish, just like there aretimes where you watch a player and they
battle and they just get beat bya good pitch or something. Yeah,
(23:37):
Marte just looks lost. Yeah,And it makes me wonder kind of talking
about Santiago Espinal if he continues tohit well, is it, you know,
more apt for him to get astart over Noelvi Marte as the season
goes along. Sure, that isthe question that is We've talked about it
a lot between development and winning. If Noelvi Marte is not helping you win,
(23:59):
but he's a big part of yourfuture that needs to be developed at
the big league level, do youcontinue putting him out there even when he
seems helpless or do you go withthe guy who's playing better in Santiago Espanol
down the stretch of some important games. I think that's an interesting thing that
Nick Kral has to deal with. And on top of that, it's not
like there's people that they can reallydig, you know, right down the
(24:21):
thing. Fine, where are yougoing? Right? Unless they make some
sort of a trade for that position, I don't know that they would do
that. Here's what I do know. We talk about some ups and some
downs, not many ups and downsfrom Hunter Green. He has been as
solid as you would hope from oneof your cornerstone pieces as a starting rotation,
young member of this team. Teamfriendly contract, throw out. Throw
(24:45):
out the start against Pittsburgh, andit was back to back starts against Pittsburgh.
And I'm not making excuses, buthe went at Pittsburgh six and a
third, two hit, zero runball. His next outing, just six
days later, he got beat upa little bit, seven hits, feeling
well, yeah, six earned runs. But look at what he's done since
then, gave up just one runagainst the Saint Louis Cardinals dominated the Detroit
(25:08):
Tigers. That was the heart wrenchingloss after he went seven innings giving up
just three hits and no runs.Six innings, two hits, one run.
He made one mistake yesterday it gothit for a home run. Could
you have asked any more from HunterGreen than what you've seen as of late?
For the all star for the CincinnatiReds. Yeah, no, not
(25:29):
at all. I mean, he'sbeen wonderful in his last thirty nine and
two thirds innings pitched. He's gotfifty strikeouts and he's allowed fourteen earned runs
and forty innings. That's pretty damngood. That is the stuff that you
look for out of an ace. He's leading the major leagues, or excuse
me, he's leading the National Leaguein war When it comes to starting pitchers,
he is among the best in then L, and his development has
(25:53):
been a very positive sign for thisteam. Yeah, something obviously to continue
to watch for the all are HunterGreen. Let's break, let's come back.
Let's talk about one more member ofthis team who's had a monster week.
We'll do that, We'll get yourphone calls, and we'll look ahead
all before we talk to Charlie Goldsmith. At one o'clock. It Sincy three
(26:14):
point sixty on ESPN fifteen thirty,Cincinnati Sports Station, thanks to Skyline Chile.
Hey Alexa, who got traded?Getting ESPN is fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.
Hey fans, Tony Pike here,Hey Alexa, what's going on in
baseball? Getting ESPN is fifteen thirtyfrom iHeartRadio. Oh my goodness, dude,
(26:38):
he killed that ball that is wayover the Kroger case. The second
home run in his many nights forReese Hines. My lord, what a
home run by this kid. Hehas burst onto the scene here with the
Reds and it's an eight four Redsleague. Oh man, maake, it
(27:02):
has hurt five minutes. They're allextra base hits in the big league.
Okay, I like this here.Okay, that is Reese Hines. This
is since he three P sixty ESPNfifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station and a service
of Skyline Chile. Earlier in theweek, Austin, we talked about Reese
(27:26):
Hines and you know it's he thenext Airstitate as a Keno, and Mode
did a segment on his show ofI hope He's the next airsteatet a is
a Keno because a Keno hit fourteenhome runs in a month, Yeah,
that would be great. But whatReese Hines has done has impressed me in
many many ways. And we've gota new feature on this show, and
(27:47):
I think it appropriate Austin to givethe award for this week to Reese Hines.
It is our Express Pro Tire andAuto Player of the Week. So
this is service you deserve, professionals. You try family owned auto repair entire
service for over forty years, newname, same great service. Thirteen AREO
(28:07):
locations and in July nineteen ninety nineac inspection twenty four to ninety nine oil
change entire rotation. It is xp R e SS Pro Tire and Auto
and uh expressed with an X.It is xpro dot com and it's our
Player of the Week feature, andit's Reesehinns. Where do you think that
(28:27):
ranks for resigns among the accolades thathe has received in his career To be
the Sincy three to sixty Express ProTire an Auto Player of the Week,
gotta be at the top. It'sgotta be gotta be at the top.
No, so re signs this weekand maybe Reese gott the Cincinnati and was
like, oh crap, I needneed an oil change. My tires all
rotated. Boom Express Pro twenty fourto ninety nine in July Boom come on.
(28:52):
So what's been impressive about Reese Hines, in my opinion, is not
just the two home runs. Thosewere impressive, but since joining the Reds.
Two home runs, three doubles, one triple in sixteen at bats.
He's been phenomenal. He's hitting fivehundred and it's finding ways to help even
(29:15):
if you're not hitting home runs. The game before yesterday he had an RBI
single. Yesterday he went two forfour at the dish, two singles.
He is stealing bases, He's madegood plays in the outfield. He's done
something that only two others have donesince nineteen oh one Austin and that has
(29:37):
recorded a single double, triple, home run, in stolen base through three
career MLB games. Do you knowwho last accomplished that feat? Who's at
Ellie de la Cruz. That's prettygood. Now. I don't think anyone's
expecting him to be Elie, butthis is a guy, in all likelihood
that the Reds might have been justthinking, Okay, let's bring him up
(30:00):
for a couple of days and thenwe'll get him back down. He has
forced the hand of the Reds notonly to keep him on the roster,
but to continue to play him.And we could talk to Charlie Goldsmith at
one o'clock about this more. Arethere parts of his game that give you
more optimism that he's not just aquick, flash in the pan type of
player. But even if he wasa flash in the pan type of player,
(30:23):
Austin, even if that was him, isn't he exactly what this team
needed at the exact moment that he'sdone it correct? How many times have
we said during the first half ofthe year, man, they just need
what they need a spark, theyneed someone that's going to jolt this roster.
Well, you hit two home runsat the length of Reese Heines dead.
(30:45):
That's going to get some attention, you know, Reese Hine Again,
we asked earlier to wait see thenext Aristide is a Kino go back Aristatus
hit fourteen home runs in a month. I'd take that in a heartbeat with
Rees Shigns right now. But he'sdone it in the field with some nice
plays. Defensively, he is stealingbases, he's getting RBIs from a single
(31:08):
standpoint. He's got the triple,he's got multiple doubles. He has impacted
this roster in multiple ways, andagain, in my opinion, more importantly
than what he's done at the dish, it's what he's done to a clubhouse
in the Cincinnati Reds that it justfelt stale. It just felt like things
(31:29):
were monotonously moving in the right inthe wrong direction of Okay, here's another
day at the dish, not reallyany good outcomes, and then here comes
Reese Hines and he's hitting these toweringblasts, and he's got the emotion.
The emotion we saw remember last year. I remember it specifically Will Benson hitting
the walk off against the Dodgers andthe emotion of Will Benson after he hit
(31:53):
that, looking to the dugout androunding the bases. And I'm not saying
to that extent is what Reese Hineshas done, but he has certainly sparked
the clubhouse. You go to theballpark, he certainly has the fans attention,
because when they're announcing reshigns coming up, there are people paying attention to
what he's doing. Yeah. Yes, he strikes out a bunch, I
(32:13):
get it. The numbers of thenumber of strikeouts in Triple A is a
little bit alarming. But he hasshown patience. He has paid. He
has made pitchers pay for throwing strikesor missing their spots. And regardless of
if he's got staying power in MajorLeague Baseball, for the Cincinnati Reds.
(32:34):
Isn't it more of a threat forthe Reds in their lineup in the seven,
eight or nine hole to have aguy like Reshigins yea, and no
offense to Stuart Fairchild, who's madesome great defensive plays and some timely hitting
this year, especially against lefties.Doesn't he give you a little bit more
thunder at the bottom than maybe StuartFairchild than Nick Martinez. He may not
have Martini, he may not havestaying power in the big leagues for a
(32:59):
long time, but he does havepower period. Yeah, and they need
that. They've needed that all seasonlong from the outfield and they haven't really
gotten until now. We talked earlierthis week. Sometimes a guy gets his
chance in the big leagues and thatcan just spark the entire team. Now
everybody's at the top of the dugoutsaying how far is he going to hit
the next pitch, almost like wewere with Ellie Da la Cruz last year,
(33:21):
and they needed it, especially comingoff that disappointing series sweep to the
Tigers. Okay, here's a teamyou're supposed to be. We need this
guy. We'll see what he cando. And he comes up and takes
the league by storm. And yeah, it's the Colorado Rockies. It's not,
you know, the best team inMajor League Baseball, but these are
games they have to win, andReese Hynes being a big part of that
(33:42):
seems to have lifted this team ina way that we haven't seen so far
this season. I just think it'sa fun story and something that you got
to ride this wave as long asyou can. And so much about those
call ups last year, there wasmomentum around him, There was a build
up. It was a very quietcall up for rees Shigins. Right there
was like a couple reporters were like, hey, Reese Hines is in the
(34:04):
clubhouse, so I'm expecting a decisionor an announcement to be made, And
next thing you know, the teammakes the announcement and then Reesehines makes the
announcement as well. But in anysport, that excitement is contagious, and
in baseball, hitting is contagious. And look no further, look at what
Tyler Stevenson's done over the last coupleof games. And I'm not saying it's
(34:27):
because of what Rees Shins has done, but one player providing a spark and
locking in can maybe help the nextguy lock in, maybe just a little
bit more, can help Elie daLa Cruz at the player what Jonathan Indy
has been able to do. ReeseHines came on the scene quietly, without
a lot of fanfare, and ina week's time has turned himself into one
of the favorites right now on thisroster. And again he's gonna have games
(34:52):
where he strikes out three or fourtimes. But at the end of all
of this, Reese Hines gives yousomething at the end of that lineup that
if you miss as a pitcher,he's gonna hit the ball four hundred and
fifty feet if you make a mistake, which how many times Austin We went
into the Rocky series saying, man, if we could get a true seeing
with Kyle Freeland and say, whatis it like facing this Red's lineup?
(35:15):
When you get past like the firstfive or six. You can't do that
now, you can't take a break, you can't relax because if you make
a mistake, it's gonna go fourhundred and fifty feet. Resigns. Awesome
week, Hopefully it continues. We'lltalk to Charlie Goldsmith about the opportunity for
stain power with resigns, and somuch more. But before we get to
any of that, a couple ofyour phone calls five one, three,
(35:37):
seven, four nine, fifteen thirty. This is Cincy three sixty, and
thank you to our friends at SkylineChili. Right here on ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station. ESPN, youfound Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. We
call it I can't walk. Welcomeback. It's since E three to sixty.
(36:10):
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station. We're a service of Skyline Chile,
and we are minutes away from joiningUH or having Charlie Goldsmith join us
to kick off our number two.I want to get to a lot on
the Cincinnati Reds with Charlie and Austin. I think it would be fair because
Sunday is the Major League Baseball Draft. A little look ahead maybe with the
(36:30):
draft, because in my opinion,I feel like the MLB draft has changed
in the last couple of years. You know, it used to be the
guy gets drafted, four or fiveyears go by, then you see the
player, he's kind of out ofside, out of mind. We're seeing
I feel like now more than ever, players that are called up to the
majors not even a year into theirtheir time with the team and the organization.
(36:51):
So what could that mean for potentialhelp down the road for the Cincinnati
Reds as well. We'll get tothat with Charlie. Let's get a phone
call in here and number one Mark, what's up? Man? Hey,
I got three points to make andI'll be quit. I heard you,
I heard you talk about Santia.Go ask it all. I still think
Josh Harrison would have been an upgradeover him, but you know it's a
(37:14):
mood point. Now. I watcheda game yesterday and I was I was
paying attention to Chamber because Austin Hallmoresaid I pit on Jambers. But Tyler
Stevenson beldim out yesterday because he cameto the play twice, same situation in
his core position. The first timehe grabbed it the short stop and then
(37:35):
he popped out. The second time. He got to hit later in the
game. But the Reds already hadthat game won. So you know,
I won't Jamer trade it because Jamerdon't get the job done to me.
You know, I know his hisstats overall, But if you pay attention
to Jamer and watch his at batsand watch his situation the way bats he
(37:55):
doesn't hit when it really matters. And then my point ain't on ree signs.
I can go all the way backto when Eric Davis came up that
ninety World Series team. I sawall them players when they came up from
the minor leagues. What I'm sayingwith this guy is he's got a real
quick back, So I think whenthe pitchers in the league adjust to him,
(38:17):
he don't go into a little slump, sure like most players do.
But I think by him having aquick back, it can make up for
him being laid on the pitch. So that's gonna be interesting to see how
things go from here on now thatthey play him every day. What's gonna
happen with TJ. Friedel comes backright? Who who you know? Has
(38:42):
the lineup gonna be? Then whogets sitting down? And it's gonna be
interesting to see how they manage butthat situation because I think he got to
play every day. So I'll getoff and listen. Mark, thank you
at that point though, and alsoI know you probably agree it's a much
better option when TJ. Friedel's healthyto at least have a guy on the
bench like Reshigns than what they've hadin the past. Yeah. Sure,
(39:05):
even if that's just a bench rollfor Reese Hins, that's a good option
late in the game to maybe comeoff the bench and provide a spark and
still get starts at different positions.I think they they've done a lot more,
and rightfully so, with Will Bensonjust batting him against right handers and
using someone else against lefties. I'mall for that. But the other point,
and I will say the Jamber Candelarything was made by a different caller
(39:28):
yesterday. It's just the situational stuffthat needs to or you hope improves going
forward. For instance, the nightbefore, when you know the Ellie de
la Cruz leads off the inning witha single and before allowing Ellie to try
to steal second, Jamer swings atthe first pitch grounds into a double play.
(39:50):
That's that's a frustrating side. ButI don't think Jamer has been a
disappointment for the Reds in the firsthalf of the year. Yea, I
don't think he's been a disappointment. He's also dealt with the bit of an
injury. He's dealt with a lotof guys around him that are being injured
and not being able to hit.The lineup has been in full strength very
(40:10):
rarely this season. According to BaseballReference, in high leverage situations this year,
Jamer Candelario has come to the platefifty six times. He's hitting three
fourteen with a three pot fifty sevenon base percentage, So he does produce
in those moments. Have there beensome situational issues, yes, Has there
(40:31):
been some defensive issues, yes?Has he been as consistent as you want
him to be. Probably not?Who has though right, very few so.
And on top of that, withhis contract the way it is,
I don't think you're going to finda willing trade partner or the Reds would
want to eat that amount of money. If it's just it's not going to
happen. But also, if Itell you right now that at the end
(40:52):
of the year, Jamer will havebatted to forty and let's say he doubles
his twenty eight home runs in eightyfive RBIs you're taking that from Jamer candor
Yeah. I would have taken thatat the beginning of the year because I
thought everybody else was going to behere and be productive as well. And
so you know, baseball is ateam game, and you know, having
(41:15):
certain guys not in the lineup canaffect the way a pitcher approaches a player
can affect, you know, andplayers being on base and not being on
base the hamstring issue. I mean, Jamers is delivered in some big moments
at times this year. He's alsostruggled in some big moments at times this
year. That's that's life in themajor leagues. Man. Yeah, And
(41:35):
and I would say this to Mark, who are you going to replace Jamer
candel Ario with? Yeah, thatwe just talked about it with Noelvie Marte,
Right, Is espen All going toplay more? Is Steer going to
play first and never go out inthe outfield again? Or how exactly are
you going to do that? He'sa switch hitter. Yeah, as it
(41:58):
pertains to the Cincinnati Reds this year, that is my question going forward,
who else you're going to turn to? And we made we made fun of
you your to go with, whereelse you're gonna go? Who else you're
gonna go to? Right now?If you're the Reds, It's just it's
not easy. And if you dowhat makes you think that that's going to
be better than the production you're gettingout of Candelaria. Correct, that's what
(42:21):
I would know. That's just alot of ifs and a lot of of
what like, I'm not there yet? Has he been lights out? No?
But who has been consistently all yearfor the Cincinnati Reds. Let's get
ourselves a break here for the topof the hour. H Charlie Goldsmith when
we come back, Cincinnati dot Com, ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.

Charlie, Tony happy Cincy Shirts sincesixty listener appreciation. Let's go,
(44:36):
Charlie. Let's get it started offin the best way possible here for our
number two and uh with that,I think we start with the story of
the week for the Cincinnati Reds, and that's been Reyes Hines and Charlie,
you and I spoke a little biton the field before the uh the game
against the Rockies and Kyle Friedland theother night. How big of a surprise
(44:58):
has been Hindes, not just comingto the Reds, but the success that
he's been able to see since comingup and joining this ball club. I
mean, you've always known he's hadit in him. And for example,
I know a couple of guys whohave seen Reese in a spring training setting,
seen Reees in the right hand fullof spring training games or minor league
games, and they're like, man, this guy can be one of the
(45:20):
best players in baseball. And ofcourse it's not that easy. But if
you catch him on the right swing, the tools speak for themselves. And
he has a long, long roomto grow, a lot of room to
grow and a long way to go. But what he can do in a
very small snapshot has you know, elevated minor league teams. Of course not
the same on the same scale, but he's had hot stretches like this before
in the minors. I don't knowthat the Reds were expecting this to call
(45:44):
him up this when they called himup, I don't know that they still
expected him to be playing this bigof a role. Kind of now a
week into his big league career, but it's kind of a great example of
a guy hitting his way in amore opportunity. Charlie, is there anything
you've seen in watching and re signsover the last couple of games that would
maybe signify to you that there isstaying power there, that it's not more
(46:07):
of a flash in the pan,but what he possesses is something that he
can continue to build on. SoI've seen a lot of them over the
years, and frankly, what he'sdoing now defensively and as a base runner,
I didn't recognize that part of hisgame. Probably a huge reason for
that is, like, the storyof Reesshins' minor league career has mostly been
injuries. Drafted in nineteen, seasonending quad injury after he makes his minor
(46:31):
league debut COVID twenty and twenty one. It's a maniscus twenty two, it's
a hand you know. Really, those were a lot of lower body injuries
for the most part. That's whythe Rods actually moved him from third base
where he was drafted, to theoutfield. They're like, we just think
this will help him stay healthy.Kind of a preservation move. And now
a couple of years later, he'sbeen able to stay healthy. He's been
(46:52):
able to work on those areas ofhis game, build up that overall speed.
You know, he's made slide andcatches, he's stolen bases. Those
are parts of his game that canbe very consistent, even though at the
plate he probably will always have somehot and cold stretches. We talk about
consistency. The stretch that Jonathan Indiahas been on nearly up to two to
(47:13):
eighty, what have you seen fromJonathan India in your opinion that has led
to now more of some sustained successat the plate For Jonathan, he just
knows exactly who he is. Andyou've kind of seen different examples of India
over the years trying to be someonehe wasn't like in twenty twenty two,
he tried to become a power hitterbecause the Red lost all their power hitters
(47:34):
who they traded. You know, that experiment from India failed spectacularly and got
him hurt. At the start ofthis season. I think he was trying
to be a bit too selected atthe plate. He was a bit too
picky with the pitches that he wasswinging at and not swinging at here,
you see him kind of double downon what he was in twenty twenty one,
using his hands to drive balls downthe line, and really those hands
(47:54):
and what India can do kind ofthat quick twitch, that's his biggest strength
of a hit. When you combinethat with a perch of the plate that's
just really solid. He feels likea veteran hitter, Like with Jim or
Candelario. When they added him,we talked about the importance of adding a
veteran hitter who had a certain senseof polish and experience to him. I'd
(48:14):
put into you very much in thatcamp. You know, he's only what
in his fourth year in the bigleagues, but he just really feel like
a real experienced pro every time he'sat the plate. Charlie. One other
player of note, because we couldtalk a lot, because the offense has
picked up, but on the offensiveside of the ball, essentially since becoming
a father, Tyler Stevenson and hisapproach at the plate. He's been excellent
(48:37):
all year with two strikes at notswinging at balls out of the strike zone,
but now he's having more success withthose balls in the strike zone.
What have you seen from Tyler Stevensonduring this stretch that has helped him with
so much success at the plate,he recently made some mechanical adjustments ways to
use his legs more to elevate theball and push it more up because kind
(48:59):
of, like you said, whatit was was, you know, the
old line, take two strikes andtry to loop the ball the other way
was what Tyler stevenson season has been. Now with these homers, you know,
he's showing what he's been working on, even in batting practice. Some
even in the cage, he's kindof simulating how far can I hit this
ball? How much can I driveit. He's testing himself. He's adding
(49:19):
to his back speed, stuff likethat, and it's all translating, of
course with these huge homers. Sucha story of the month of you know,
June into July has been a greatstretch for the top half of the
lineup, but no you know, consistency or production really at all from the
bottom half. Well, Stevenson's rightthere at the number five or number six
spot. For him to be havingthis type of stretch, it just goes
(49:39):
really a long way for how thelineup of the whole feels. Let's talk
about one player that would like tofind ways to get things going. And
there are certainly times and we've talkedabout players going through some struggles, but
you see it with the exit velocity. Maybe they're just unlucky or pitchers are
making really good pitches against them.Nolve Marte at times does not look comfortable
(50:01):
at the plate. Is there aconcern on your end, because we saw
some struggles in TRIPLEA, We've seensome struggles at this level. He's also
struggled in the field a little bit. Where are you at with Nolva Marte
right now for the Reds? Imean, frankly, you know, this
is what it looks like when atwenty two year old who kind of rocketed
through the minor league miss is halfa season of developments and then gets thrown
(50:24):
back into an everyday role. It'skind of exposed him a bit from what
he was missing that he could havedeveloped earlier in the year. Like the
player that Noelvie was last September. That is a big leaguer who's ready to
win right now, but he hadhad a whole season to kind of build
up and develop the habits that's translatedat a really high level. What you're
seeing from Marte, it's just kindof an inconsistency that I've never seen from
(50:47):
him before. You know, hisswing mechanics, hill leg will kind of
step towards the third base dugout, and that'll kind of be all over the
place. When he throws the balla third the way he separates one arm
and reaches at his shoulder, that'svery inconsistent. So these are the types
of habits again that you develop itand get a rhythm for over the course
of a long season that Marque doesn'thave right now. Now, you know,
(51:10):
there is a similarity between Marte andre Tines. You know, heines
he was the upside play. Hewas the guy who had just the overall
ros talent to give you a joltin the arm if you needed. You
know, if you got him onthe right week, Marque, for now,
I would still throw into that category. You know, he had a
really nice game. I believe thatwas on Wednesday. Three scorchers off the
bat offensively kind of took a stepforward. Then the Reds don't have an
(51:37):
option kind of in the whole organizationaldepth, Shore better than Marte from an
upside perspective, right now he can'tkeep going down this path or else it
will be time to give espen Onmore of a look. But I think
the overall tools and again upside thatMarte has combined with he has done it
in the big leagues last year, that gives him a bit of a longer
runway here going into July, pastthe All Star break. To get Charlie.
(52:00):
You wrote a great piece on Cincinnatidot Com highlighting Hunter Green. And
everyone knows the size and the athleticismand the fastball that Hunter Green possesses.
You shine more of a light onthe slider and holinch go of a part
that has been in his recent success. He's now an All Star for the
(52:20):
first time, Hunter Green, whonow looks like one of the best values
from a contract standpoint in baseball? What have you seen with the slider in
his development that has now led toso much success on the mound. It's
funny too, because like the storyof Hunter's season has been all of these
changes that he's made, Like hechanged the homework he does between starts and
the way he studies and reads hitterswings. He changed his splitter and you
(52:45):
know third and fourth pitches, addinga splitter in a curveball. He changed
his you know, throwing program thathe does between starts, and you've seen
that maintain the fastball velocity, whichis taking a big step. Tell him
the one thing he hasn't changed isthe slider, and you know, for
that, even when we've talked about, you know, the story of Green
season, you know, and wetalked to literally when David Bell talked for
ten minutes about Green being an AllStar, didn't mention the slaughter once.
(53:07):
I haven't mentioned the slaughter much thisseason. But it's as good as anything
Green does, just as good asthe velocity, just as good as the
arm, talent and athleticism. It'spart of the complete package that man,
when it's rolling that that is anelectric, really really strong pitch that the
Rockies had no clue what to dowith. And you've seen games a lot
(53:29):
over the years. We're really goodlineups have just struggled even you know,
spotting and seeing through that pitch. It's really an underrated standout tool that's made
Hunter Green such an important pitch.Charlie, with the emergence of what Hunter
Green has become and Nick Lodolo gettingback, there is also another setback,
and that's with Graham Ashcraft. Let'sstart with Graham Ashcraft. One. Were
(53:53):
you surprised to hear Nick crawl becausehe goes down to triple A. Now
he's on the injured list. Whatdo we know of Graham Ashcraft and were
you surprised in hearing that? Imean, of course, you know the
if the Reds knew there was anelbow strain, and that was the significance
and severity. Of course, thisis an important entry that a pitcher would
(54:15):
back down from what they knew atthe time was tightness. And Ashcraft,
the tough guy, pitched through it. And then after he got option,
he went and got a second opinionon the elbow, showed the strain.
The Red doctors looked at it themselves, showed the strain. Now Ashcraft is
shut down from throwing for two weeks. But you know, whether it was
the elbow, whether it was youknow, it was probably a combination of
(54:37):
things. You have the elbow, you have the way he wasn't putting enough
confidence in his secondary pitches. Youhave just the way that his cut was
riding to the top of the strikezone as opposed to jamming guys and getting
ground balls. There were just anumber of things that made Carson Spider is
a better picture for the Reds rightnow than Graham Ashcraft, and that's what
led to the decision to you know, pick Spiers over Ashcraft. And then
(55:00):
you know, kind of later onyou figure out that there's a more significant
injury going on here as well withthe elbow strain, so for a time
out of the season and all thatkind of stuff. You know, the
red said they didn't have that informationyet. Nick Frawll wasn't sure yet,
but Graham Ashcrof's got a good amountof rehab ahead of them. You know,
these are significant things that'll have tobattle back to Charlie from another injury
(55:22):
standpoint, and you can just someof you and I had a chance to
talk about because the news broke onWednesday, Matt McClain, there's actually a
date and a timeline now being sharedthat's got to be at least at this
point a positive step for Matt McClainone hundred percent. I think here's the
best way to say it. So, like a common phrase we talk about
(55:44):
with injuries is he's out of thewoods. Well, McLean isn't out of
the woods, he's just stepping intothe woods. You know, it would
be a very kind of routine progressionof you know, a strength training kind
of getting the throwing back because thisis his non rolling arm. He knew
all that, or running he knewall this would be really straightforward. But
(56:05):
swinging is really really what's going totest this and it is a very step
well, honestly one of the moststep by step where you have progressions I've
seen the last few years here fromyou know, dry swings, not even
hitting the ball, hitting off ateed, hitting off of flips, hitting
lives, hitting worse velocity. Andthere are like ten checkpoints that he's going
to to kind of get through oror fifteen checkpoints before he ends up on
(56:27):
that rehab assignment on the twelfth, and you know, all of these to
have to go right for him tocontinue to stay on that track. But
again, just the fact that thereis even a date, you know,
for any injury, it is ahuge step. When you have a date
for the start of the rehab assignment. That's kind of when you're on a
progression that's leading you towards something. And really, for the first time all
year, mcclaims on that progression.Thereads are hoping he returns in September.
(56:50):
I'd say there's a chance that hedoes for sure, but again, there's
still a long way to go ina lot of boxes to check, Charlie.
From a injury stand, this teamhas been riddled by them. Are
there any other players that were gettingmore positive feedback or maybe closer to returning
to this club? Fair Child expectedto return right after the All Star break.
Freedom in the week or two weekor ten days after the All Star
(57:13):
break. Luke Maylee is still inwhat David Bell called the healing phase coming
back from his back injury. Martinihad thumb surgery. Jabo could return in
August. Kind of a lot ofinjuries going on right now. They kind
of have quietly piled up when theylost a couple guys over the last couple
of weeks. Charlie, you mentionedLuke Maylee. Austin Wins has played really
(57:35):
well. Is there a competition thereat the backup catcher role right now?
Seeing what Wins is doing and whatMelee has done this first half. I
mean every role there's always competition, and you've seen for a much more high
profile role than this, I willsay, Melee's relationship with the pitchers.
I think Malee is still a strongdefender. I think he's had a bad
(57:55):
stretch at the play. I stillthink he has kind of you know,
he can run it the one andhe has run into pitches which gives him
a bit of you know, gamepower that maybe Wind doesn't have. And
then Melee's kind of been the defacto captain of the team this year.
That's kind of not on my radaryet when taking Melee's spot. But of
course, you know, it's majorlybaseball. Every spot kind of has some
sort of competition aspects. But againtoo then kind of Malee hasn't even started
(58:20):
ramping up baseball activities yet, soit's not like he's returning to Mow Charlie.
As they wind down the first halfof the season, three games against
the Marlins and then it's the AllStar break. Do you get a sense
of as the trade deadline approaches?Could they be buyers? Could they be
sellers? Is it wait and seewhat's your gut telling you right now as
(58:43):
it relates to this team. Sothe best reporting here is, you know,
the word thread the needle is kindof the keyword to keep in mind
there's a tight needle to thread onthe buying side and or a tight needle
to thread on the selling side.Like I've used this example a million times
(59:04):
on the selling side last year, teams wanted Andrew Abbott for a rental pitcher.
If a team wants to give youtheir version of Andrew Abbott for Frankie
Montoss, of course, but there'skind of a a not narrow but not
a huge lane for them to besellers with guys like Frankie Montoss or even
though Jonathan India quick tangent the reliefpitching, I think if they don't show
significant improvement for a win loss perspectivebetween now and the trade deadline, there's
(59:27):
a there realistic chance that you know, relievers on one year deals could have
value on other teams and be dealt. And then, especially because the Reds
have a really strong surplus of youngrelievers with upside who I think are big
League ready in Triple A, thatwould kind of kind of be its own
thing. I think there's a atight needle to thread with being buyers as
well. I think the Reds wouldyou know, they weren't the team they
(59:50):
went out and traded for Tyler Glassnow in December when that was something they
needed, and kind of that strategyand that philosophy impacting the forms what they
could do this year at the tradedeadline looking for a right handed hitting outfielder.
If there's a trade that makes sensefor both sides, I think they're
definitely interested. They recognize the needas the need of a right handed hitting
outfielder with power. Certainly, Ialso think they have to show some improvement.
(01:00:13):
It's got to make a big pushfor you know, kind of a
guy who would be a rental atthe trade deadline. It really depends on
what these deals are. I couldsee the Reds kind of, you know,
so it was a conservative tool aggressivemaybe being a four to three towards
conservative and opposed to being the teamthat goes out and gets you know,
Jazz Chisseholm at the trade deadline. This year, things of course can change.
(01:00:34):
It depend on how these teams usethe Reds players. If they think,
you know, the lookout second basementis awesome and the Reds don't,
well, that could be how adeal gets done. But again there's a
lot of steeling out to do asthey get a sense of the market Charlie

Is it Trump? Or I don'tknow boom? No one knows right

(01:03:15):
to be a way the NFL canimprove their replay system. Tennis and soccer
are just way too efficient. Iknow we've got some electronic thing coming with
the chain gangs and stuff, butwe're still gonna have humans spotting the ball.
Let's get to work on this.NFL start watching some soccer and tennis.
They do have the replay pretty muchtied down. I imagine the NFL
doesn't want to be like soccer andtennis. That'd be my guess, Tony

The guy sounds like, yeah,I live in Florida. I'll tell you

I agree with Mark about the Reshinsituation. However, you know TJ.
Friedel has not shown that he canstay on the field, so I

go FCC this weekend and hopefully theReds can sweep the Marlins. Take care,
guys, all right, go FCC. I'm in go, go get

As a boy, as a teenager, as a man, I had
a faith in God that could movemountains. And then I started listening to
(01:11:14):
this program and listening to talk backto where God would call in, and
my faith is now eroded. It'smicroscopic. Oh no, Now this is
what I was worried about. NowI'm an atheist. Oh, man,
Like we're to blame for that alittle bit? What's up? Tony Austin's
Ryan here? Hey? Ryan,Chances Hunter Green pitches in this All Star
(01:11:38):
Game? And that Paul Skean's astarting the All Star Game? What ten
games in his first MLB season. He's a beast. I mean I would
have I would assume if skeins wentyesterday and he's starting the All Star Game.
Then Hunter Green will be more thanavailable to pitch in the All Stars.
You would think Tony and David bemortal. I got a five way
(01:12:01):
potato yesterday with extreme cheese, andthen I got two conies with mustard onion
with extreme cheese. Real good man, that does sound pretty good. Just
rub that in mortal. You know, I have been doing really good,
like with my diet and everything thisyear. I've lost twenty one pounds.
(01:12:23):
I feel fantastic. But the lasttwo days I have wanted to eat everything
insight. That's the ebbs and flows. And now listen to him describe that
right there. Tough. I amborderline foaming at the mountain. It's tough.
I'm beginning to drool Tony Austin bonnAin't easy, pretty ironic. Yesterday
Tony's criticizing my defense, and thentoday when it really matters, could he

lunch, you dirty doll. Hegot free lunch, you dirty doll.
Go Oh, that's funny. Ballingain't easy. Just took you to the

(01:14:42):
there. Believable, more than justshirts at Cinci shirts. I did not
and I completely dropped the ball onit. I did not get to a
question with Charlie on the Major LeagueBaseball Draft coming up on Sunday. Oh
yeah, And that's what happens whenyou're having a great conversation, no kind
of flowing, you forget and wewere just so dialed into everything that was
(01:15:02):
going on. But Charlie I talkeda little bit about on Wednesday with him.
But it's unique in baseball because goneare the days where you don't see
a guy for two, three, four years. You can see a guy
in a year or less in somecases. And it just so happens that
(01:15:28):
the Cincinnati Reds have the number twooverall pick, and there are two in
my opinion, and I'm not adraft expert, but from what I've seen
Austin, there are head and shoulderstwo guys that are above the rest this
year in the draft. One isTravis Bizana, who's a second basement of
Oregon State. Okay, the otherone who has projected the most to the
(01:15:53):
Cincinnati Reds is Charlie Condon, right, and MLB dot Com says, Condon
to the Reds feels like the biggestlock in the first few picks of the
draft. Cincinnati is looking at thesame six collegians as Cleveland with I believe
(01:16:14):
the name Jack Caglione, who's afirst basement and pitcher, uh and Chase
Burns, who is a right handedpitcher with Wake Forest. But this Condon
guy right now, he is kindof rewrote the record books in college baseball.
He was fantastic with Georgia this year. Power guy can play the outfield.
(01:16:39):
I feel like if that's the Redspick, that's the position of need
the most. Right, if you'regoing into a draft saying what do the
Reds need to address, it's stilloutfield, right. You can never have
enough pictures. Yeah, I meanI know that. You know, you
can't always look at the draft andbe like, Okay, well this is
guy's going to have an immediate impact. But when you're in the top five,
those guys tend to get to thebig leagues a lot quicker than mostly
(01:17:01):
anybody else. Paul Skeens is aperfect example. Less than a year ago
he went number one overall and he'sstarting the All Star Game next week.
Rhet Louder has ascended quickly through theReds organization. That's happened a lot in
the last couple of years. Andwhen you're in a position to get best
best player available at a position oforganizational need beyond just the big league level,
(01:17:27):
it gives you. It kind ofmakes and clarifies the choice that this
guy has a ton of power. He would be great at Great American Ballpark.
He can be here sooner rather thanlater and can fit into exactly how
this team needs to be built. He can be that. You know,
we talked about the impact resigns ashaving just simply for the ability to hit
the long ball if you're able to, and if you continue to build the
(01:17:50):
team the way that you plan tobuild it, which is what we've seen
over the last two years. Maybea year from now or two years from
now, what a guy like CharlieKant can bring to the lineup would be
huge. The conversation around Connon,He's six to five, is that it's
remarkable in today's baseball how he hasfall like fallen through the cracks of the
(01:18:11):
Major League Baseball pipeline, like incredibly, incredibly missed by so many. Listen
to some of these numbers, Austin. They label him as a can't miss
prospect at Georgia. This year hewon the Dick Kuser Trophy as college baseball's
national Player of the Year. Hewon the Golden Spikes Award as the country's
top amateur baseball player. He ledthe NCAA in most all major offensive categories
(01:18:38):
most home runs thirty seven of anycollegiate player in the last quarter century.
Posted the highest ops in the gauntletthat is the SEC, and he did
so Austin by one hundred and thirtyone points. Listen to these numbers through
a full season, thirty seven homeruns, he walked fifty seven times,
(01:18:58):
struck out just forty one forty onestrikeouts on the season, astounding exit velocities,
blistered, breaking balls, incinerated insidepitchers, inside pitches, and by
season's end, at the top ornear the top of every draft board in
the industry. Now he can verywell go number one to the Guardians,
(01:19:21):
but a lot of prospects have CharlieBozana or Travis Bozana at number one.
So I think the Regi are ina really good spot here because all of
those accolades I just listed have himas the number two prospect. What does
that say about Bazana? Regi arein a great spot right now. After
(01:19:42):
one and two in this year's draft, it gets a little dicey. There's
not as dominant of prospects. Butwe're talking about players that could possibly be
ready as soon as I won't sayas soon as they're drafted, but they
can be ready very quickly for anorganization, and for the Reds, an
organization that is still in need ofpower outfield bats. Seems pretty good,
(01:20:09):
It seems, I guess, prettygood at this point, right mm hm.
So for the first time in along time, how about this,
Austin, I'm going to pay attentionto the Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday.
Really, you're telling me you're gonnaact. They'll probably be drafting while
the all the teams in baseball areplaying because they still can't get out of
their own way. Pretty sure, that's how they do it. I think
they're I'm assuming it's in Arlington,I believe. I know the last couple
(01:20:31):
of years they've actually gotten smart, and they've done it like at the site
of the host of the All StarGame. I know Ken Griffy Junior was
a part of it last year whenit was in Seattle. I do does
it? It starts at seven o'clock, right, Yeah, so I think
most of the games are over bythen, so they're finally starting to get
smart unless there's a Sunday night baseballgame, which I don't know if I
(01:20:53):
don't think there is because the draft, So they may have actually gotten smart
and on Sunday, the draft doesn'tstart until after all the games are over.
Yeah, which is It's true lookingat it now. Now there's a
handful of four o'clock games on theWest Coast. But you know what,
round of applause? Major League Baseball? Okay, major League Baseball starting to
(01:21:15):
figure it out a little bit whenit comes to their draft. Okay,
finally you didn't clap because I'm stillnot sold on Major League Baseball with the
draft. And then, well,we gotta appreciate baby steps, don't we.
Sure? Okay, but I'm notgiving a standing ovation or collapse to
a baby step just okay, whatelse do we have? When did the
Olympics start? Like the end ofthis last month? What is your Do
(01:21:38):
you have an excitement level on theOlympics. I don't really get excited until
I like to like the opening ceremonies. Yeah, and then I get all
patriotic and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Do you have a favorite Summer Olympic
event? I do like track andfield. I like watching track and field.
The basketball is always a favorite.M Did you know break dancing is
(01:21:59):
in this one? No? Ididn't. Yeah, it's called breaking break
dancing. Okay. I like thetrack and field. Swim checked that out.
Swimming is probably my favorite. Someown Biles is back in the Olympics.
It's true. USA projected to winthe medal count at the Olympics and
rightfully, So what about like thewhat about like the under the undercar,
like the flag football or the threeon three? Do you have any interest
(01:22:21):
in that? Not really? Ilike sand volleyball, like the two v
two volleyball. That's fun. Yeah. For those what were those two guys
that were real good like Phil Dolhauserand those guys for a while, uh,
Misty May and Carrie Watsh Yeah, yeah, yeah, Misty May trainer.
Yeah, I'm a big Olympic guy. Summer more so than winter,
(01:22:45):
fair, are you. Uh,I'm more of a winter guy. Okay,
I've always liked the winter sports more, that's fair. Yeah. Uh.
We do love swimming. Yeah,I just it it falls in the
right time of the year because youknow, you get to the end of
the month and yes, there's trainingcamp, but the Olympics are kind of
(01:23:05):
like that precursor to get you rightto football season. They helped that time
go faster, and I'm all forthat. I'm also all for our listeners
and phone calls, and we haveone right now. Mike is calling in.
What's up, Mike, Mike? Are you a fan of the Olympics.
Well, no, not really.Well, yeah, so somewhat.
(01:23:28):
Track and field always intrigues, maybebecause it's a lot of a lot of
fast things. Winner. I'm nota winner guy. Before my wife passed,
I was. She really got meinto like figure skating and the intricacies
of skating. He used to love. What's that jump they do at Austin
one hundred and ten when they comeoff the platform? Oh yeah, that's
(01:23:51):
crazy. Yeah, I can't thinkof the name of that right now.
I always saw those guys had bigkohunas to do that. That looks dangerous.
Crap, all right, there's alot of Olympic sports, especially on
the winter side that like Bob's sledding, to me, the loge, all
of that seems extremely dangerous anytime yougot states and sharp objects. That's what
(01:24:13):
I thought with that excuse me,I catch my bread Like with that luge
thing with those bobs, like, yeah, it's like if you would just
space out and put your hand downfor a second and come back bangers left
or something. That's crazy. Hey, I I uh, I'm so bad.
I'm I apologize. I'm trying torecover from the proton bean therapy.
(01:24:35):
Doesn't that ground high tech star trekProton Dean's broach roun Like in electricity,
it's proton without the arts up atLonal in the university up in lomal Indo,
California. And there's dudes and womenthat come from all over the world
for this. So I'm I'm hopingthis is going to help me out a
(01:24:58):
little bit. But I don't wantto talk about that. Everybody wants to
hear that crap. But the Reds. Oh, that's what I wanted to
ask you guys Wensday, and thenI wanted to ask you all questions.
Yeah, and I know, Austin, Ay, what when's the next really
tough stretch that the Reds have onlythird playing so high tower of the ballplus
(01:25:19):
uh, you can argue based onthe competition that they have that right away
out of the All Star Break isnot easy. I know Washington is not
considered a great team, but theyhave played better baseball this year. They
open up with nine on the road, the Nationals, the Braves, and
the Tampa Bay Rays. Nine roadgames to start the second half, and
(01:25:41):
then it goes right into the Cubsand the San Francisco Giants. So some
teams that are underachieving, but teamsthat have a ton of talent. I
don't think it's a very easy startto the second half of the season by
any means for the Cincinnati Reds. For me, Mike, it's the middle
of August. They play three inMilwaukee, three against Saint Louis, against
the Royals, three against the BlueJays, four against the Pirates. All
(01:26:03):
those teams are competitive. August istough. Yeah, it is tough,
and it's gets hotter and hotter, and the fatigue sets in more and more
with the with the late season injuriesand just general fatigue. But both time
frames sound pretty tough, especially thatnine game road trip. That's that's not
(01:26:24):
easy, man, that's tough.Yeah. But I mean, oddly enough,
the Reds are through the first halfremarkably better on the road than they
are at home. Yeah. Yeah, this is what was in my mind,
like, is Miami team comes in, they're better, They're pitching,
era is better on the roads, and the Reds stamp is at home and
(01:26:44):
the same way with hitting. Itjust it's really weird to me. Yeah,
it's so weird, isn't it.It is. It's remarkable, especially
in such a hitter friendly ballpark. And they've got the lowest home run total
since twenty fourteen on pace right now. Yeah, I just yeah, I
still wish they'd get somebody who couldclub the hell out of that ball.
Can I ask a football question? Please? Okay, Now, I know
(01:27:08):
it's a West Coast thing, butstill at the NFL, the Rams got
a tough schedule this year. Man, They're going to play the Eagles,
the Packers, the Dolphins, theBills, the forty nine ers, but
all at home, and then theygot the road games against San Francisco and
they open up with Detroit. Hopefullyget a little bit of revenge for that
playoff game. Remember that twenty fourto twenty three that broke my heart.
(01:27:31):
That was a killer. So justyour guys feelings about the Rams for this
year, and then I'll just hangup and listen and thank you very much,
Mike, thank you, have agreat weekend. Very simply put Austin,
I'll say this, the Rams goas Matthew Stafford goes, if he's
healthy. With Pooka Nakulam, CooperCup, who's stopping that offense? From
(01:27:57):
a skill standpoint, I will takefrom a strategy, game plan standpoint,
I'll put McVeigh up there against anybodythey're better with Kyron Williams now at the
running back position. I think theRams are one of those teams they're not
going to win their own division.I think the Rams are competing for one
of those wild card spots. Yeah, they have one of the hardest schedules
in the NFL this year, Notto mention they play in a division with
(01:28:19):
maybe the best team all around inthe NFL and the San Francisco Giants,
and they start on the road Sundaynight football against the Detroit Lions is never
going to be easy. Raheem Morrisis gone. He's the head coach now
in Atlanta, and he was abig part of what they did defensively.
They've lost a couple of pieces ondefense that make me curious to see,
(01:28:40):
how are they going to figure outnavigate life without Aaron Donald, life without
Bobby Wagner, those type of guyswho have been gone for a couple of
years now. So what is thatgoing to look like On the defensive side
of the ball. You mentioned itthough, they have enough offense to be
able to compete, But teams likeSan Francisco twice, Detroit, Green Bay,
they play Miami, they play theEagles, they play the Bills,
(01:29:02):
they play the Jets. I mean, that is a difficult, difficult schedule.
I think they're one of those teamsthat can sneak in on the back
end of the NFL. A quarterbackthat gets banged banged up a lot.
Yeah, five games in and thenthey have their bye week. That is
a twelve game stretch with no buyfor the Rams. Yeah, I look
at them. I look at thatfirst five, they would have to be
(01:29:23):
three and two. In my opinion, I think they can beat the Bears.
I think they can beat Arizona GreenBay As a team I think is
like viewed similar to the Rams thatthey're going to be competing for that wild
card spot. I would look atthat October sixth game as a pretty good
barometer of where the Rams are.Yeah, let's get a break, let's
come back. Tom gallad or Tommyg of FC Cincinnati fame the voice of

the drill. Fridays we get achance to talk to the voice of FC
Cincinnati, Tom gallern her joining usafter a huge, huge FC Cincinnati win
(01:30:53):
last weekend. We'll looked at that, we'll look ahead to what's next and
many more things with Tommy g joiningus. Now, Tommy, what's going
on? By Tony? Tony,Tony, Happy Friday. Good to hear
from you before we get into allof this soccer and all schools from the
past weekend. How are you,how family? And how is your sleep?
(01:31:14):
Uh? Sleep, The sleep isatrocious, It's absolutely terrible. Other
than that, things are going thingsare going well. I've uh, you
know, I've locked I've unlocked thisside with my other two kids. Where
my kids like he wants to gohit golf balls now they like going to
the Reds game, and if Ican get the kids out of the house
and help the wife and the newborn, then we're winning on all cylinders right
(01:31:35):
now? Oh interesting? Interesting? Are you the man? The man and
the defense is gone Gone Zone? Now? How has that transition been.
It's difficult because I was always aManda Man kind of guy. I didn't
want to play Zone. I feltlike that was a cop album. Yeah,
yep, but it's it's a transition. We're we're still learning. My
(01:31:58):
my son keeps asking me. He'slike, when are we going to n
f C Cincinnati match? When areyou gonna pull the sword before the match?
And I'm like, just be patient, we'll figure out something. Now,
Remind me again, is it AustinThomas or Thomas Austin? Uh?
We just call him a Yeah,Yeah, for sure, I got it.
(01:32:18):
Just tell it Thomas Thomas Austin Pike. Before we also dive in,
I want to ask how you're going, More importantly, how your ribs are
doing, because, uh, you'rea cheap shot. Yeah. I thought
Kevin in the booth threw a coupledifferent cheap shots at you, and I
know it's different because you're reacting tosix different goals and maybe you're not on
(01:32:39):
the same page for all. Howare you doing because I felt like there
was a couple of cheap shots inthere that that got your attention a little
bit. Yeah, and you knowhe likes to keep you in my toes.
Nine years together would do that,So it's fair play. And and
I've had a good week of recovery. I'm ready to go on Saturday.
But I would just kind of encourageKevin to sleep with one eyel That's right,
(01:33:05):
Tommy. We we talked going intoreally the DC United match about not
overlooking DC United ahead of Inner Miami. They found a way to get the
win against DC United and the InnerMiami. I know there was no spars,
I know there was no messy.I don't know that it would have
(01:33:25):
mattered because of the way f CCincinnati played offensively. I know it might
be an easy answer. Is thatthe best from start to finish that you've
seen an f C Cincinnati match tothis point? Yeah? I think so.
Just an all around fantastic performance, and you could tell the team was
locked in from the start, whichwas great. Look, sure it looks
(01:33:46):
different if Miami has a couple oftheir stars on the pitch from an overall
matchup, does f C Cincinnati stillwin probably with the way they played,
but we'll never know. That's animpossible task to figure out. The reality
is that Miami team had been playingreally well without Messy, without Suarez,
so they came in red hot andf C Cincinnati looks like Miami were playing
(01:34:09):
their third match in eight days, but Horns Blue would played back to back
road matches in very hot conditions, one of them being one of the longer
trips of the year at Dallas. So I think to be able to perform
like that on the back end ofa third match in eight days against the
red hot Miami team and come outin a different formation, And I think
we asked Pat about this in thepostgame interview that we did with him immediately,
(01:34:30):
and I think it's not to belost and everything is that they only
had one day on the pork withthe new formation, and that was Friday
Friday, and so to make thatchange to come out with the conference they
had, I thought it was wildlysiveand just applaud the team for putting an
effort that they did. They hada lot of fun. It was a
convincing win. Which you know, there haven't been a whole lot of this
year. I think, what it'stwelve wins in the last fourteen games.
(01:34:55):
I mean, the second team inMajor League Soccer history to do that.
Nine of those twelve have been byone goal. So to win goals,
especially when gold differential is a tiebreakercome the end of the year, and
what might be a very tight supportershould race that plus five last Saturday was
very big. You know, wewe look at a lot from n FC
Cincinnati standpoint. We played Pat Noonan'suh post match audio early in the week,
(01:35:17):
and you know, it's a goodoutcome when there's really nothing that Pat
Noonan can can pick apart about that. And we've we've talked back and forth
about that even after wins, aftersome losses. But you could almost tell
in that post match that Pat Noonanknew that this team is finally showing in
a match what they're capable of doingon any given match in the MLS.
(01:35:41):
Yeah. Absolutely, And you knowyou could certainly tell from his postmass comments.
And I think, look, ifyou really want to be critical and
find something that drives you crazy,it's it's probably that set to cole By
Miami, and and that's been howteams have found some room and ability to
score as of against Cincinnati has beensome of those set pieces. So if
(01:36:02):
you're looking for a point of frustration, that's probably it. But that's not
much. And he was really happy, he said, with a full week
of prep this week for Charlotte, probably a little bit more focused on the
team defensively and getting ready for thisgame. But yeah, now that's that's
as complete as we've seen from theteam for ninety minutes. And honestly,
(01:36:23):
even when it was one one,it didn't really feel to me like Miami
was back in the game. Andthen f c Centinny pounces twice and you're
like, huh, three to onein the locker room is going to be
great, and then you get onemore and it's for to one, and
look, you don't ever want tosay it's over at halftime, but man,
Miami had an uphill battle, andSergio Busquetch at the one hour mark
decided he had seen enough and wantedto hit the showers early and get to
(01:36:45):
the postgame buffet, and so hegot sent off. And then Miami didn't
have a chance, and Cincinnati, you know, just punished him with two
more goals. So I gave theclub a lot of credit for that performance.
And now they're at top of thetable, so that comes a little
bit of pressure, but also somefinance of that victory and you build towards
this match tomorrow. You mentioned givingthe credit. Also, I thought the
(01:37:06):
scenes from both watching the match andseeing the social media outpoint after the match,
the atmosphere at TQL Stadium. We'vetalked about this a bunch, but
from the bailey to the rest, when you put on that type of display
and you're the you're the reigning supporter, shield winner, and you're taking over
(01:37:27):
the lead, I thought the atmospherefrom an MLS game standpoint was off the
charts on Saturday. Yeah, absolutelywas. And that's what I said afterwards,
I said, this is a TQLstadium like to remember that that whatever
your role was, team photographer, broadcaster, videographer, playing coach, whatever
it might be, you're gonna walkaway as as that's an al theimer right
(01:37:50):
to play the top team in atop of the table with or without a
couple of the biggest stars, andto just punish them in the way that
FC Cincinnati had, It's wildly memorable, And yeah, the atmosphere was off
the charts, and look the guy'sfeet off that it's going to be a
sellout again tomorrow. I think that'sthe ninth sellout in twelve home games this
(01:38:13):
year. So the crowds have beenfantastic in that building since it opened.
They will continue to be that way, especially with the club the top of
the table now, and you know, dog days of summer coming and a
lot of a lot of enthusiasm surroundingthe team. So you got to feel
good about all of that. Andyeah, I thought it was a very
very special night, Tommy. Weknow how good Luciano Acosta has been.
(01:38:35):
He's now scored ten goals, He'sgot eighteen assists. He leads all of
MLS and assist I believe he's tiedfor fourteenth in goals. We know what
the MVP has meant to this team, But outside of his play, who
else has picked their play up aroundLuciano Acosta to start getting some of these
(01:38:55):
results on more of a consistent levelfor u f C Cincinnati. Well,
look, not to be lost inthat Luco discussion is that he has opportunity
with still a lot of time togo in the season, but the way
he's playing to be the first everrepeat MVP in MLS, which is kind
of crazy that, you know, there's been some pretty good dynasties along the
way and nobody has ever repeated asMVP, So that'll be in play.
(01:39:19):
But it's going to be a toughrace, just as the supporter should race
is going to be. But Ithink when you look at Luca Orshano in
the way that he has progressed andhis players got better and better, and
now they move him into that higherposition. We'll see if Pat decides to
roll with the same formation in thisgame tomorrow night. I would imagine that
he would after scoring six goals withit, but I think it's something that
(01:39:40):
he'll analyze week to week based onhis personnel available as well as the opponent.
Because he felt like that formation woulddo really well against Miami and he
was spot on. But Luca hastransforms match by match and gotten better and
better. And for his credit,he's going to be an All Star and
go to Columbus in a couple ofweeks. So credit to Luca there for
getting better and better. I thinkthat DeAndrea Yedlin has been a fantastic pickup.
(01:40:04):
You know, I was watching Columbiathe other night. You talk about
losing a guy of the quality ofsanti Arias, and there was questions about
how they would replace him, andbeing able to bring in DeAndrea Yeddlin in
March, and the way that hehas contributed and the leadership he brings to
the clubhouse, he's been fantastic. So I think just there's so many different
(01:40:24):
pieces of the puzzle that have cometogether, and you have a group that's
confident in a group that knows howto win, a group that won the
supporter ship last year, and acoaching staff that puts them in the right
positions to be successful. Then thatsets Cincinnati up to be in this race
as we go down the home stretch. But yeah, there's certainly been some
newcomers like Luca, like DeAndre whohave stepped in and been fantastic. Tommy,
(01:40:48):
you can take any professional sport orsport at any level, and there's
always the conversation about either the trapgame or the letdown game. And you
come off a six to one victoryover Inner Miami, you take over the
lead from a point standpoint in theMLS and now here comes Charlotte thirty two
points. They are not by anymeans a terrible soccer team coming in,
(01:41:11):
which may help no FC Cincinnati aswell. But one, how hard is
it after a match like that againstMiami to avoid the letdown and then still
go out there with now a weekoff in between and pick up right where
you left off. Yeah, Idon't think it'd be too difficult, not
the way that that Pat prepares thisteam. And you get Charlotte in sure,
that's a team that is playing wellthere in sixth place right now in
(01:41:32):
the Eastern Conference. With since Anit's also her success against them at Tiquel
Stadium, out scoring them five tonew in the previous two matches. They
had a one to one battle inCharlotte at the end of March. That
was his match, the number sixfor the team. So things have changed.
But they have a new head coachin Dean Smith and have been playing
better. I think the key isto come out and continue the formula that's
(01:41:53):
worked and put the pressure on earlyand don't let them become comfortable, because
I think it's some of the matchesin Whichintonna has not one at home this
year you've seen the opponent come outand be able to take some control of
the match early. Against Miami sSincai scores in the tenth minute. They
haven't conceded a goal this year inthe first quarter of an hour. That's
a really important stat and the onlyteam in the league who have not conceded
(01:42:16):
in the first quarter of an hour. Well, if you can do that,
and you can find a way toget one, then you have an
automatic advantage of that crowd that youwere talking about moments ago is into it
with loads of energy and it's gameon from there. So this seam under
pat Noonon has been so good athome, created a fortress at TQL Stadium,
and I think that that's really goingto be the key is to just
take control in that first fifteen totwenty minutes again and never give Charlotte any
(01:42:42):
ability to feel comfortable in this game. If you do that, they're without
their leading scorer in Ajiman he suspended, So I think that then the formula
starts to come together for another successfulouting. But the way they prepare these
guys, I don't think that there'smuch concern of a letdown going into this
one. Not knowing at the timebecause of the international duties with Miles Robinson
(01:43:04):
now obviously Team USA with unfortunate results, means Miles Robinson is back to being
available, but you have the Olympicscoming up. Miles Robinson has made that
roster, but it did seem likeearlier in the week, pretty good news
from a standpoint of Miles Robinson notexpected to miss a ton from an MLS
play standpoint, which is huge forthis team. Yeah. Absolutely, And
(01:43:24):
I think that was the hope wasthat he would be able to stick around
through the Chicago match, which isWednesday. So he gets these two home
matches Saturday and Wednesday, then hetakes off, so he only misses one
league game because remember then you gointo the League's Cup break, so others
are gonna have to step up andfill that void both for the New York
game next Saturday and then during League'sCup. But the fact that you're only
(01:43:45):
losing one league game, because they'llcertainly be back for that August twenty fourth
match at Miami when those two gohead to head again. So I think,
look, it's a massive honor forhim. You've seen that in some
of his media responsibilities and the thingsthat he's talked about up But yeah,
it's tough to lose Miles, especiallywhen you know we talked about the past
(01:44:05):
couple weeks, no Nick Halan,no Matt miaskin now for the rest of
the season. So Miles has areally really big role in leading that back
line the rest of the season. But I love what we have seen from
him, and you know, certainlywish him the best as he joins the
Stars and Stripes. Did I seethat this may have been a couple of
weeks ago, But is MLS consideringor are they going to take a break
(01:44:27):
during the twenty twenty six World Cupto accommodate players being able to play internationally
and avoid these incomplete rosters throughout thethe MLS. I think there will be
some break in twenty twenty six.You can't just play straight through it,
especially with that event here in theUnited States. Kind of change his things.
We didn't feed in twenty twenty twobecause the World Cup was a guitar
(01:44:49):
so they shifted it to the wintermonths because of the heat and guitar so
that was more of a November Decemberevent, and therefore MLS shifted their schedule
and completed the season before the WorldCup, but in eighteen, and obviously
if season ten he wasn't an MLSthen, But I was keeping an eye
on things, and I think therewas that three week break in twenty eighteen
that they set aside. So itwasn't the complete run of the World Cup,
(01:45:11):
but it kind of got you tothe first knockout stage game and then
if you had a play, youknow, more players to be able to
return to their squads. Then asplay resumed while the World Cup was still
going on. Now, I thinkit's gonna look a little bit different in
twenty six because the tournament is herein the United States. What does that
mean, you know, facility wise, so on and so forth in getting
(01:45:34):
that resumption of play, But alsofive weeks off would be a really difficult
situation. So I think we'll seekind of how it plays out, but
I would imagine that there will besome sort of break to help the teams
that have players participating in the WorldCup. You know, Tommy, you
know, MLS season kind of runsinto football season, runs with baseball season.
(01:45:56):
All these things kind of melt togetherall the seasons, you know,
fifty having wins right now for theGuardians. What a first half they have
had? What is what? Whatis the field though? Is is there
a nervous energy because here are theGuardians. You think they're gonna be in
a playoff race all season? Septembertwenty fourth and twenty fifth, the final
two installments of the Ohio Cup.Is there a nervous energy not to get
(01:46:18):
swept and lose the Ohio Cup whilein the midst of a playoff race.
I mean, what a crushing waythat would lose a playoffs spot. Now
the old Guardians reeling a little bitafter this series against the Tigers this week.
I mean, look, Tiger,Tiger's got hot against been there,
right, they got the red thenthey got the Guardians and you know,
(01:46:39):
a team that hadn't done real wellin the first half of the season.
But no, I think the Guardianshave had a great season so far.
They got a lot of guys maybewho don't know better, right, who
are going on and performing despite peoplewho maybe have doubted them. So give
him a lot of credit. Youknow that you lose Beaver for the season
(01:47:00):
and you still are in first placeright now, that's big and you know
it's it's it's interesting to have thethe MLB TV on my TV at the
house. You know, we watcheda lot of baseball in my home and
in my home, and my olderson is a Yankees fan, and my
younger son aligns with me on theGuardians. Of course, we're all Red
fans, but there's a little bitof a battle between the boys. As
(01:47:23):
you know, you put your favoriteteam on the app, so you know,
one day it's the Guardians, oneday it's the Yankees. You can't
watch the Reds down there because weget them on local TV, you know,
on valleys. So it goes backand forth. And now now there's
apparently a rule that whichever team hasa better record, they get to be
the favorite team. I like that, So he can't be happy the Yankees
have played lately. No, it'sfunny because my older son, he went
(01:47:46):
to a game, what about nowis almost a month ago, three four
weeks ago, Yankees won and they'relike six and twenty since then, eighteen
since he since he went to gamein the Bronx. So I don't know
what kind of bad juju he leftbehind, but he saw a win and
then they've been in a massive slumpsince Tommy before I let you go.
(01:48:09):
A lot has been made about GregBerhalter no longer the head coach of the
men's national team. We know thatJurgen Klop politely declined. Whatever that means.
Yeah, have you been contacted forthat job by the US Soccer Federation,
Liz, I can't comment inappropriate. You know, my focus is on
calling this match, not any otheropportunities that might be out there. But
(01:48:31):
I hope they get it right. You know, you got two years to
the World Cup, less than twoyears now. At this point, I
think it's enough time you get theright person in now to take over the
job. But you've got to getthe right person right now and give them
time to evaluate the player pool,to evaluate the system, to evaluate exactly
what they want to do. Becauseit's an interesting period as well, because
(01:48:51):
normally you'd be starting World Cup qualifyingright now, which means a lot of
really meaningful COMCAFT matches in order tosecure your spot. But as a host
nation, there is an automatic spotto the United States, so they don't
play World Cup qualifiers, and thereforeyou lose those really meaningful matches over the
next two years. And now you'vegot to find a way to schedule friendlies
(01:49:13):
that you know aren't always the bestshot from an opponent, and it's hard
to replicate that that same intensity. So I think it'll be again. It's
a really interesting period for the forthe federation, and they've got to get
this move right, get the rightcoach in and and give them this run
up to twenty twenty six as you'rehosting the World Cup and you've got i
(01:49:39):
mean, not just make it outof the group stage, but then then
try to win a couple. Onceyou do, Tommy, you're the best.
Enjoy the call against Charlotte tomorrow night. And let Kevin know that his
actions are now being watched under amicroscope, being watched by many by men
the boot camp. The bootcamp willbe rolling. Let them know. Yeah,
I mean, if there's a teamshot, watch it. I might.
(01:50:00):
I might try to sleep sweep hisleg or something. Can you tell
Kevin it's it's not just you thathe's got to deal with, because you
got alarming. We're paying close attention. That's right, That's right. I
mean, And don't worry. DaveAbbotts in the back and thanks, and
and you know he's ready to jumpin if needed. Well, abbot will
go to the highest bidder. Ican promise you that. All right,
(01:50:23):
I gotta go tell me. Thankyou man, have a great rest of
your day, and I have agreat call tomorrow night. Cheers. All
right, let's fork to it.Cheers Sammy, Tommy, g FC Cincinnati
the Voice. Awesome way to startour three. We got plenty more still
to go as we roll along herein the hour. Thanks to Penn Station,
it always just devolves. In twentyminutes yep CSBN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports
(01:50:45):
Station. Now three sixty is backon ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Welcome back since he three to sixty. Thank you to Penn Station. ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Acouple of minutes here, I have a
(01:51:11):
couple of loose end in football thoughtsthat we'll get to in the next segment.
Mowegar's going to join us from theHoly Grail. He's got up the
banks today getting set up for theMoeger Show. We'll join him with quick
kits and locks of the night beforewe get to any of that. With
just a couple of minutes here,Austin, I just saw Lance McAllister retweeted
this. MLB dot Com has releasedMLB Jersey sale leaders. Sho Hey Otani
(01:51:39):
No Surprise is number one overall. He was number one with the Angels,
now he's number one with the Dodgers. Bryce Harper is two, Aaron Judges
three, Mookie Bets is for RonaldAcuna Junior as five. That rounds up
the top five. Juan Soto,Francisco Lindor, Fernando Tatis, Corey Seeger,
Jose Altuve is number six through ten, and then eleven through fifteen.
(01:52:02):
Nolan Arnado, Pete Alonzo, TreyTurner, Flade Guerrero Junior, and then
Ellie de la Cruz. Is thatto me, I'm a little surprised because
I would expect Ellie the style heplays and the notoriety that he's received.
I would have expected him maybe alittle higher on that list. Certainly,
(01:52:25):
every jersey you see in Cincinnati ifyou go to a game, is pretty
much Ellie de la Cruz. Areyou surprised at all that he's fifteenth on
that list? I get who thetop five are, and I get why.
I don't really understand Lindor because he'snot having a great season. But
Seeger Altuve. Aeronato at eleven isa little surprising to me. Trey Turner,
(01:52:46):
But Ellie at fifteen, what wereyour thoughts on that. I wasn't
really that surprised. I didn't sortof expect him to be up there,
just because the Reds aren't really arelevant franchise in Major League Baseball. Yeah,
I just I thought that, AndI don't think that they have a
uniform outside of the city connect aspeople think or want to wear that that
(01:53:08):
the points you met. I don'tknow how many Ellie jerseys I've seen that
aren't city connects. That has tobe a ton of But I get because
you're more out of sight, outof mind. I understand that, and
you're not going to be a marketlike New York. I mean, really,
the top seven are classic, cleanstylish uniforms, Dodgers or Yankees,
(01:53:30):
Phillies, Braves, even the Metsare a clean uniform. Aeronauto surprises me
a little bit at eleven. Yeah, I could see that, Trey Turner,
but I mean that's the Phillies, vlad in Toronto, I mean Pete
Alonzo and it seems like he's gotone foot out the door. Yeah,
but again, I with same withGuerrero as a guy who could potentially be
(01:53:51):
traded. I just I thought, even though the Reds are struggling, if
you're a fan of baseball, yousee a lot of Ellie Daily crews with
what he does. I just alsothink that, well, you don't really
because they're never on national television froma highlights standpoint, maybe maybe from a
highlights stand at MLB dot com ornetwork, they do a lot on Nellie.
(01:54:13):
The league really only puts its focuson a few teams, and most
of those teams are listed here.Like the Reds never play on Sunday Night
Baseball on ESPN. Ever, surethey maybe once a month will play a
National Fox game, but like eventhen it's regional like an NFL game or
only part of the country gets it. But like you know, all these
(01:54:35):
teams, even the Orioles, whohave as much to be excited about as
anybody in Major League Baseball, haveone player in the top twenty, and
there's ten players. You could maybethat team US and maybe that's why only
one of them got up there. But that's a market similar in size to
the Reds and an organization similar inhistory to the Reds. But teams that
(01:54:58):
have been successful as of late andget a lot of time in the national
spotlight are in the top fifteen whenit comes to these Jersey sales. I
think Ellie will be there eventually ifhe continues to play well. But you
know what, do we always talkabout Major League Baseball failing to market at
stars. Sure Ellie could be potentiallyone of those. Mike Trout we know
(01:55:21):
is one of those having played onthe West Coast for a long time.
Shohey is a different story because he'sglobal, But yeah, it's the same
situation I was. I was honestlykind of surprised that he was in the
top twenty. Yeah, just becauseI know that that's fair. The Reds
don't get a lot of love outsideI will say this outside of Major League
Baseball Network Network loves they talk aboutthe Reds a lot. I do like
(01:55:45):
a little trend that we have goingon on Twitter right now, Austin.
This started with Danny Randall Today hetweeted out a photo listening to Sincy three
to sixty from the North American WorldSeries for Girls Softball. Oh wow at
lou Berlinger Sports Park in Columbus,Ohio. How about that? And then
our guy Jeff from Virginia responded backwith a photo where he's listening outside of
(01:56:06):
a pool in one hundred degree LasVegas. He's had a word of sphere
it'll work. And then our guyMaso from the vill posted a picture listening
from the sandbar in Anna Maria Island. How about this? See I like
this little chain. Yeah, whereare you listening from? Tell us where

We got Mo at Cincy three tosixty and it's my favorite quick hits
and one of my favorite Moeger showsbecause it's the show that comes up on
low location. You can hear inthe background. Now Mo is setting up
(02:03:03):
at the Holy Grail right downtown atthe Banks. The rain's going to be
out of here. Reds play againstthe Marlins tonight and Mo is posted up
already. Mo, what's up?What do you got coming up? Well?
You know, not only do wehave me here at the Holy Grail,
and not only do we have aReds game tonight against the Marlins and
hopefully future Red Jazz Chisholm, wealso have Celtic Fest. Oh whoa Celtic
(02:03:26):
Fest happening just down the street.Does that mean there's folks in Kilts.
I think Jalen Brown's there. Oh, he's got nothing else to do because
he's not on the Olympic team forsome reason. Nope, MVP of the
Finals. Now we're posting up hereuntil six o'clock tonight because that's what our
show goes to. And obviously gotthe Reds and Marlins coming up this weekend.
(02:03:47):
If you're out and about, comehang out. There's no better place
to hang out before a game.I am enjoying a Philly cheese steak.
Oh my, go to order hereat the Holy Grail. I would imagine
there's a ton of Marlins fans kindof coming through, aren't there. You
know, in my life, I'mnot sure I've ever met at Marlins.
Remember there was that one guy thatwore the Marlins jersey behind every other game,
(02:04:08):
Marlins man, Marlins Man? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is he
gonna be here? Is he gonnabe in town for this? In the
Diamond Club? You know? Iwent to a Marlins game once when they
were in their old ballpark. Uhwhere the stadium where you played in the
Orange Bowl. Through a touchdown passone touchdown yet, So it was with
my great start. We go tothe We were down there for my first
(02:04:29):
wife's spring break, she was aschool counselor, and we went to the
Keys, went to Key West, and then we flew in and out of
Fort Lauderdale. So the night beforewe leave, the Marlins were in town
and we go to the game andthere was no one there. I mean,
it's it's the most sparsely attended baseballgame I've ever been to. And
then like in the seventh inning, people start showing up. And finally I
(02:04:53):
asked the gentleman behind me, I'mlike, is this a doubleheader? And
he goes, no, it's flowRider and pit buller playing. So you
definitely stayed for Pitbull. My mostdefinitely did not. I don't know who
Pitbull was at the time. Infact, I think I think I told
someone I'm like a flow Rider andterrorism or someone's here. Uh. But
by the time we left, therewere like thirty thousand people in the park
(02:05:15):
there for the postgame concert. Noone was there for the game. What
a terrible feeling. Do you likeflow Rider? Mo? Not? Really?
Okay? Is there anybody who's likehim? My favorite rappers flow Riding.
Yes, I have one friend thatloves his favorite rappers flow r Yeah.
His name is Bill Baker. Allright, Bill Hill loves iconic like
flow Ryder has some some songs thatlike you hear you know you want to
(02:05:39):
go and I get it. Yeah, But is there anybody so you know,
someone who like their favorite hip hopartist is on my life? Yes,
I do. Wow, incredible. It might be the only hip hop
artist he knows, but he lovesflow Riding. All right, very good?
Oh good. A lot of RedsI'm assuming today. What else you
got, mo? Well, youknow, not only do we have the
(02:06:00):
Reds, you know, getting readyto play another bad team this weekend.
The pageantry and excitement of the MLBDraft. Yes, Sunday night, Round
one, Reds have the second overallpick. And so every year we get
on my draft guy, Chris Crawford. This dude's awesome. And I also
want to ask him about rees Hinesbecause like, this is the guy that
we get on to always talk aboutprospects. So I want to ask,
(02:06:23):
like, is re Sign's gonna begood? Yeah? So great question.
Also, a Steve Cangelosi is callingthe Battle of the Queen Cities FC Cincinnati
and Charlotte, and so Steve's gonnajoin us at five twenty. We have
a ton on the Reds. AndI wouldn't expand upon something that Joe Burrow
said on a podcast that I gotcalled a homer for doubling down. I'm
(02:06:46):
just gonna read some numbers. That'sall I gonna do. I'm gonna spit
facts, and then you can tellme if I'm being a homer when it
comes to Joe Burrow, what's onething you want to see out of the
last series before the All Star breakfor the Reds? We three wins?
Three wins? Does what for yougoing into the break? Anything? Does
it change? Any thought? Makesme feel like they have a chance.
Okay, you've got to clean upagainst these bad teams. Miami is bad.
(02:07:11):
You're at home when these three yerea game under five hundred. If
they're there, I know we're allgoing to do the Well, how do
you feel about them being game underfive hundred? It would sort of feel
like best case right, It wouldsort of feel like if I would have
said in the middle of June, they're gonna be a game under five hundred
going into the break, you wouldhave said, well, okay, that
sounds like best case they will haveachieved. I think best case shy of
(02:07:31):
that. I mean, you gotto take care of it, and they
have. I mean they've the threeworst teams on their schedule this season.
I think they're now twelve and one. Will the Marlins are one of those
really bad teams on their schedule.Yeah, so I want to see three
victories. I want to see themstep toward contention against an awful team This
weekend at home, Mani Kiffin passedaway a huge loss for the football world.
(02:07:54):
Do you think, though, Mo, there were a lot of fans
around, maybe since Natty, thatwere shocked to hear that Monti Kiffin actually
came up with the Tampa two defensein two thousand and two and it was
not created in the last couple ofyears to stop the Bengals. Yeah,
that was the thing, right,Oh my gosh, the Tampa two man
in the twenty twenty two season.Yes, off before like, well,
(02:08:18):
they're really having a hard time withit. And I asked you, Yeah,
I'm like, Tony, this isnot a new this isn't a new
defense. No, Tony Dungeye usedthis with the Bucks yeah, in the
in the late nineties. Right, there's a lot of people today like wait,
Tampa two that was around. Ithought that was created to stop Joe
Burrow. Imagine that. Let's makesome money, Hey, Degenerates, it's
