affected by it. We'll talk about how that relates to
sports with Bob man Jean at two o'clock.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
The Xavier Musketeers.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Last night, in using a twenty two to zero burst
in the first half, beat Providence, did what they needed
to do, got another huge game from Dante Maddox. We'll
talk about the Muskies. You'll hear a little Sean Miller
post game, and we'll talk to our Xavier resident expert,
Adam Baum at one o'clock. Outside of that, your talkbacks Uh,

(01:59):
Brad Metter. We have some audio from the reds Hot
Stove League that we'll get to today with Brad Uh
and you your phone calls five, one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. Will look at what's next for the local
college basketball teams. You know, I'm starting to feel lost
and we got duped a little bit. We read this

(02:20):
bubble article last week on ESPN dot com and we
immediately reached out to Neil Payne and we had Neil
on the show, and Neil said, you know, if the
if the Bearcats take care of business in their next
couple their numbers going to go up to like sixty eight,
sixty nine percent, maybe even higher from a tournament chance. Well,
all of a sudden, the Bearcats have won three three

(02:45):
games in a row since talking to Neil Pain and somehow,
some way, the bubble now looks very, very bleak for
the Cincinnati Bearcats, so bleak that their chance right now
with work to do, is at twenty seven percent. We've

(03:05):
gone from the high sixties, low seventies to now twenty
seven percent. We'll talk about bubble chances for local teams,
not just the Cincinnati Bearcats. Obviously, the Xavier Musketeers are
on that same bubble list as well, they are at
nineteen percent. We'll talk about that and if we were

(03:27):
duped by Neil or not when we had him on
the show on Friday, somehow.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Do you think it's possible that Neil, in the conversation
he had with you realized perhaps the error of his ways. Yeah,
and has since changed.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
He was probably looking at some of those numbers and say,
wait a second, I need to rerun the numbers. We
need to check these ESPN analytics. The numbers, Mason, what
do they mean? What do the numbers mean? The numbers Mason?
He said in his Bearcats blurb. It turns out the
Bearcats one of the teams most affected by the adjustment

(04:04):
to ESPN's analytics model in a bad way.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Told you so.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
He must have came on Friday, heard what he said.
They adjusted the model, and that model is not friendly
to the Cincinnati Bearcats. Now, the good news for the
Bearcats games still on the schedule against Iowa State, West Virginia,
Baylor in Houston. Those are four big opportunities. We'll see
what happens with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Some other national noteworthy news,

(04:29):
The Alex Bregman sweep steaks are now over Austin. Alex
Bregman is a Red Sox three years, one hundred and
twenty million dollars. That's forty million per year. That feels
like a good poll question. When someone plays for the
Boston Red Sox, are they a Red Sox or a
Red Sox. Ooh, because it's an X right right sock.

(04:52):
Alex Bregman of the Boston Red Sox. Is Alex Bregman
is a Red Sox? Or is he a Red Sox.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
It's a good question.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
That's these are the things I want to answer, yep,
Is Alex Bregman a Red Sox or a member of
the Red Sox? He turned down your answers later a
lot more money in more years with other teams. Yeah,
to sign a three year, one hundred and twenty million
dollar deal with Boston kind of like what Pete Alonso did.

(05:21):
Anthony Rendon's gonna have hip surgery. He's gonna be out longer.
Anthony contract. He is a thief. That is absolutely correct.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
He has played in what two and fifty out of
a possible two thousand games.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
It's incredible and a big deal that he signed. Other
Baseball news sho Heyo Tani gearing up to return to
the mound and the Padres, who were quiet pretty much
all off season, they do make an addition here.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
They added Nick Pivetta, the right handed picture, to a
four year, fifty five million dollar deal. So things are moving.
Things are shaken as pitchers and catchers have reported, and
we're get closer to Major League Baseball. I looked on
ESPN dot com today, Austin NBA dominant, NBA dominant on
the homepage. This is the NBA window?

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Is it not? Like this is the time.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
They had a huge week last week during the Super Bowl,
all the trades that happened. This is kind of their
time to step up. Because to this point, I'll be
completely honest. Up until this point, I've not watched much
basketball at all. I did find myself last night watching
the the Jazz beat the Lakers because of the Luca effect.

(06:35):
I watched a little bit of the MAVs and Warriors
because the Warriors obviously picked up Jimmy Butler. The Mavericks
picked up Ad but he's out. But Kyrie had forty
two last night and if you follow along with with
Moager a huge overtime win thanks to Jalen Brunson in
the last minute putting the Knicks on top, they win

(06:55):
one eight. Another rough night for your bulls, Austin, as
they fall in again to the Detroit Pistons one twenty
eight to one ten. Although that game was much closer.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
It was, although in the first minute or two you thought,
probably it's gonna get ugly again. Thankfully, though, my NBA
League pass expires this week, so I won't have to
watch them balls fair.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Fair Uh mentioned the Xavier win. The Dayton Flyers also
won last night. Saint John's did come up short, although
that was a fun game. Their winning streak was snapped
more on College Basketball Slate Today as we go today,
one of my Austin I don't know if one he
might be my favorite non bearcat college football player of
all time, Pat White, Cardile Jones, Pat White, Oh, I

(07:40):
like Cardell, but Pat White was so fun to watch.
He is one of my favorite college football players. He's
returning home.

Speaker 5 (07:52):
You know.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
They brought back rich Rodriguez, They're bringing back former players.
Pat White is going to be the assistant quarterback coach
and the assistant to the head coach for the West
Virginia Mountaineer. So good for Pat White, Man, good for him.
Travis Hunter has listed on the NFL Combine invite list
as a cornerback. Is that the right way to go?

(08:16):
Because all I'm looking at is a contract situation right now.
The highest paid positions in the NFL lost in the
top five quarterback, edge rusher, wide receiver, D line and
O line. Wide receiver is a much bigger market to
cash in on than corner. Now, by the time Travis

(08:36):
Hunter's deal is up, that might change. But if you're
Travis Hunter, are you going to the combine as a
corner because you think that's your opportunity to be drafted
the highest? I think corner you have a small package
for him on offense as a receiver and probably some
special teams. But do you agree with the decision to
go corner from Travis Hunter?

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, that's his best shot to be an impact full
pro player. I would love to ask us scout if
he didn't play cornerback, where would he be like among
the wide receivers, where would he be? That would be
my question, A good question. The New York Jets have
answered their question. They have made it official. They are

(09:18):
moving on from Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers, how do you
even describe the Aaron Rodgers tenure for the New York Jets. Well,
Bill Barnwell described it. They gave up for him two
second round picks, seventy five million dollars, they signed to
contracts Alan Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Tim Boyle. They then

(09:40):
gave up another third round pick and eleven point six
million dollars for Devonte Adams, and they had over a
year of Nathaniel Hackett as the offensive coordinator and combined
won five games. Thank you, Aaron.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
The New York Jets posted today a picture of Aaron
Rodgers and said for everything you've given us the past
two year, thank you eight nice five wins and all
that for Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
I was wrong.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
I thought Rogers are going to have success in need
because I thought his mentality in the way he's built
would kind of cut through the rest of the New
York media and everything like that. It was an absolute disaster.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
I really curious what it would have looked like if
he had been healthy his first year, because I do
think he was still playing at a good level at
that point.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
But what I don't understand with him Garrett Wilson, DeVante Adams,
Bresee Hall, Tyler Conklin, they had weapons on offense and
they could not do anything. They also had a really
good defense when Robert Sala was the head coach. If
you're betting today, is Aaron Rodgers a starting quarterback in
the league next year.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Yes, I think so too.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
I think there's a part of Aaron Rodgers that when
he flew to meet with the Jets that was ready
to commit to another season. And if you're already there
and now you have the opportunity to maybe pick a
team and pick your destination, I think he's going to
do that. And I know it's right now the odds
on favorite, but I think it also makes a lot

(11:13):
of sense to Pittsburgh Steelers. Not a ton of talent
at wide receiver, but you still have a really good defense,
You have a good running game, the offensive line is
improving if you can wrangle in George Pickens and what
that offense is. Do you see any other solid fits
that make sense for Aaron Rodgers or do you agree

(11:35):
with the odds on bookmakers that the Steelers do make
the most sense.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
I heard a team today that I had not thought
much about, but it does kind of make sense. The
Cleveland Browns. Ooh yeah. You know, if you were going
to talk about Kirk Cousins potentially being a Cleveland Browns quarterback,
why wouldn't you then say the same thing about Aaron Rodgers.
If you're a quarterback. If you're a quarterback, makes better sense.

(12:01):
You have better weapons in Cleveland. You've got a better
head coach on the offensive side of the ball. I
think they have a better defensive coordinator now. Is Miles
Garrett gonna be there?

Speaker 5 (12:12):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (12:12):
A big question, But you know, I don't think Cleveland
is a terrible spot for an Aaron Rodgers landing.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
I looked on DraftKings yesterday and the odds Pittsburgh is
plus two hundred. Other teams on this list, Austin, how
about the Las Vegas Raiders plus three hundred? Is that
a good bridge situation? You've mentioned before that you think
that the Raiders are close? Is Aaron Rodgers with Brock Bowers,

(12:42):
pretty decent running game, good defense? Pete Carroll? Does he
make sense in Vegas? Other odds plus three fifty to
forty nine Ers plus four hundred, the Minnesota Vikings plus
seven to fifty for the Titans and plus eight to
fifty for the Colts. There is a sleeper in there
at plus one thousand and the Rams. What if they

(13:04):
move on from Stafford?

Speaker 2 (13:05):
If they move on from Stafford, I could see that
making a lot of sense, just because of the Sean
McVay aspect there. I also know Rogers has a home
in Nashville, so the Titans I think could be an
interesting one as well. But yeah, I think I would
put put Pittsburgh as the favorite and it would be
interesting to see a team like Las Vegas for sure.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
All Right, Uh, from a Bengals and NFL standpoint, ESPN
asked the biggest question for all teams. We'll dive into
that for the Bengals and for much of the AFC
to kind of piggyback from yesterday what we were talking
about with the Bengals odds. Now going forward, I want
to talk about the value of Trey Hendrickson and as
it relates to Miles Garrett, the Germaine Pratt trade request.

(13:51):
We'll dive into a little more of that today. There's
an interesting take about a backup for the Cincinnati Bengals,
maybe generate some noise. We'll dive into that, as well
as the NFL offseason priorities, key dates and choices that
the league has to make. All here in our number one.
We'll start that when we get back. It is since
he three to sixty. You're listening on the Home of

(14:13):
the Bengals ESPN fifteen to thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, a
service of Skyline Chile.

Speaker 6 (14:18):
Now just beyond the three point line, gives it up. Dramatics,
freeze all the way and you know the answer as
four before formatics in the ball game danger lead twenty
eight twenty three.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
I believe that was Joe Sunderman last night with Byron Larkin.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
They must have had some audio issues.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
On the call. That was Dante Maddox Junior off the bench.
Twenty six points for Dante Maddock six of nine from three.
He helps his Xavier Musketeers overcome an early deficit part
of a twenty two to zero row in the first half.

(15:02):
Xavier wins ninety one eighty two to keep their season
at this point alive. We'll get to phone calls in
the next segment. Let's do this here. There are a
couple different Bengals topics that I want to dive into
here today. One of them came from Sports Illustrated's Connor Or,

(15:26):
who is looking at the New York Giants, who are
probably going to use their top five pick on a quarterback.
Connor Orr said this, while I feel the Giants suffer
a bit in the way the Falcons did so much
perceived talent talent, but real holes at foundational spots that
are overlooked. This is the season where it almost come

(15:48):
together or fall apart. What would I do? I would
use my extra fourth round draft pick and see if
I can pry Jake Browning out of Cincinnati, giving Cam
Will whoever it may be sometime to sit in year one. Eventually,
for day Ball to succeed, he's going to need the dynamic,
dynamic use of a running quarterback. So we've talked about

(16:14):
draft picks being of vital importance Austin and how the
Bengals need to hit on those draft picks. Would you,
if you're the GM of the Bengals, be enticed enough
at the thought of an extra fourth round pick, because
I viewed fourth round picks as a guy you could
still find a starter at that level. Would you be

(16:34):
enticed enough to move on from Jake Browning for a
fourth round pick?

Speaker 2 (16:41):
What do you think I would?

Speaker 3 (16:44):
Because of the confidence seeing Joe Burrow complete a full
season healthy. Here's my overall thought. If you have to
turn to Jake Browning or any backup for an extended
amount of time, your season's not going anywhere, all right,
unless you got Nick Foles with Carson Wentz. In that situation,

(17:09):
if you need a game or two games, or a
quarter you can find viable options out there in my opinion,
But for the Bengals, with so many holes for starters,
I would be willing to move on from a backup
if that meant the possibility of getting a starter and an.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Extra fourth round pick.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
You could find a starter potentially there, or you could
package a fourth round pick and maybe move up into
the third or maybe even the second round and find
a way to get another impact player. This team has
so many holes, and the way to fill those holes
is via free agency and via the draft. And if

(17:52):
I could bank an extra pick in a meaningful round,
and all I'm giving up is a backup quarterback. I
know that Browning has been great in Cincinnati. I know
he's got a great relationship here. I know Zach Taylor
likes him. But I would be willing to move on
from my backup quarterback if it meant getting a fourth
round pick and return. And for Jake Browning, probably the

(18:13):
opportunity to go somewhere and start for a couple games.
It would help his career and in turn give you
an opportunity to fill more holes on your roster.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
I just don't know that there is a world in
which you're going to get a fourth for Jake Browning.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
And I think the only reason connor or brings it
up is because they have an extra fourth round pick.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
Yeah, I get that, that makes sense. I feel like
if they are offering that to you in all the
holes that you have, Okay, Yeah, I'm in favor of that.
We did and we have seen, however, how valuable that
position can be, and with question marks at the offensive line,

(18:55):
I don't know that I'd be willing to pull the
trigger on that.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
But can you reach any of your goals if let's say,
Jake Browning's going to play six games next year?

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Yeah, maybe not, but you may not need him to
play six games. You might need him to play two.
And who is the other option? Right?

Speaker 5 (19:16):
You know?

Speaker 2 (19:17):
So you know that in the AFC the margin is
so thin, so thin, I don't know if I could
justify getting rid of a competent backup quarterback for a
fourth round pick.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
Let me add one other thought on that, as far
as picks are related, and that's the name Miles Garrett. Now,
Miles Garrett is a unicorn in the National Football League.
I believe twenty nine years old, so still got a
lot of football left. But Miles Garrett once out of
Cleveland and Bill Barnwell wrote an awesome piece. I read

(19:55):
this earlier where he's talking about which teams actually would
make sense for Miles Garrett, and he immediately throws out
other team. Now before throwing out the teams, he talks
about other big time, maybe even legendary players being traded

(20:15):
in their prime. Tyreek Kill moved on from the Kansas
City Chiefs. The Chiefs got a first, second, and fourth
round pick. Also got a fourth and a sixth round
pick in twenty twenty three. DeAndre Hopkins in twenty twenty
went from the Texans to the Cardinals. The Cardinals got
David Johnson, a second round pick and a fourth round pick.
Darrell Reeves went from the Jets to the Bucks in

(20:36):
twenty thirteen. They got a first round pick and a
fourth round pick. Richard Seymour in two thousand and nine
garnered a first round pick. Randy Moss from the Vikings
to the Raiders got a first and a seventh So
there is precedent of what is giving up or giving
up for star players in their prime. So Bill Barnwell

(20:59):
talks about, if you're looking at Miles Garrett, you could
see the argument of two first round picks for Miles Garrett. Legitimately,
you could see two first round picks, if not a
first round pick, a second round pick. And more So,
Bill Barnwall goes down the list here and talks about
teams that we know won't be trading for Miles Garrett, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh.

(21:24):
Teams like Denver, Houston, and Los Angeles don't have needs
for edge rushers. There are teams that just aren't competitive
enough to go all in on an edge rusher when
it's not going to help them succeed. Those teams the Titans,
the Saints, the Patriots, the Raiders, and the Panthers. Now
Here are teams that could get involved as a third
party Jacksonville, Minnesota, New York, the Giants and the Jets.

(21:46):
But the teams that Bill Barnwell lays out as legitimate
possibilities for Miles Garrett Buffalo, Detroit, the Los Angeles Chargers,
the Philadelphia Eagle, the Bears, the Colts, and the Washington
Commanders seven teams in Bill Barnwell's opinion that Miles Garrett

(22:09):
makes sense for. And again, I don't know if Miles
Garrett's asking price is a first to first, a first
and a second. I don't know what that looks like.
But we've had a ton of talk about Trey Hendrickson.
We've talked about the pros Austin, we've talked about the cons.
Paul Danner Junior, on with Moegger Tuesday, said one of

(22:30):
his off season items is moving on from Trey Hendrickson.
So if you're the Bengals, I think this is one
where you can be patient. You could take this list
and say, okay, there's probably seven or eight teams that
make sense to go all in for a Miles Garrett. Well,
that means if Miles Garrett and the deal happens, that

(22:51):
leaves you six or seven teams that you knew were
on board to go all in, what would then be
the asking price to land Trey Hendrickson is your second option? See,
that's where I think this can get interesting. Or let's
say the brown scoff at two first rounds, or they
scoff at a first and a second and a late
round pick. If you're the Bengals, We've talked all year

(23:15):
about the offseason and get stuff done, Get stuff done,
Get stuff done. I think the right move for the
Bengals and Trey Hendrickson is patients, because if you see
some of these teams that are on board and want
to go all in for Miles Garrett, I know you're
not going to get the same in return for Trey Hendrickson.
But if they're eager to add a pass rusher, if
they're eager to add to add someone that can get

(23:37):
after the quarterback, wouldn't they still be eager for Trey
Hendrickson at maybe a little bit less of a price.
But for the Bengals an opportunity to maybe cash in
and say, well, we know you didn't get Miles Garrett.
Trey Hendrickson led the league in socks last year. What
are you willing to give up for him? I think
patients can work for the Bengals advantage in this and

(23:59):
look at some of these teams that make sense for
Miles Garrett and maybe make a couple of phone calls themselves.
That would seem like the plausible idea if you are
in fact willing to listen for Trey Hendrickson. And I
think a lot of this is with Al Golden and
what he prefers. This team is probably screaming a little

(24:21):
bit because Jermaine Pratt, who was a captain last year,
has now requested a trade. There are a ton of
holes to fill. But if we just talked about draft picks,
Austin and you could fetch multiple draft picks, high draft
picks to one of these teams that have a legitimate
need and an edge rusher could put them over the top.
I think you would be silly if you're the Bengals

(24:42):
to not listen or to not pick up the phone
and say, okay, you couldn't land Miles Garrett, what about
Trey Hendrickson. That seems like a smart business move for
a team that has multiple holes to fill.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
Yeah, And honestly, it feels like the type of move
that could happen on draft day itself. You know, where
the Bengals are looking to move up or whatever it
might be, or a team misses out on the guy
that they wanted to get or whatever it might be.
A lot happens between now and the draft. It just
makes me think that, you know, especially if Miles is

(25:17):
moved prior to the draft, then it feels like the
type of deal that could be done on Draft Day,
in the early hours of Day two or Day three,
something along those lines. But you're right, Patients, I think
for the Bengals will be a big deal. Yeah. And
you know, the more I think about it, I waffle
because watching the Super Bowl, Gosh, it's so important to

(25:39):
have pass rushers. But at the same time, you got
to be able to win with four and you might
be able to pick up two pass rushers with picks
like that, especially in the second round, if you are
to get a second round pick. So I think I
lean in favor of Paul at the moment and continuing
to say, okay, trade Tray and keep the offense together

(26:01):
and make Joe happy and see where it goes. And
kind of the point Moe made previously as well is
if the Bengals do all these things that Joe wants
them to do, then it all falls on his shoulders
to handle it.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
And I think with Al Golden's defense, I think there's
a chance that moving on from Trey Hendrickson might actually
make the most sense.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
There is one other piece here to the puzzle today
and that'sort of Jermaine Pratt. James Rapine yesterday on Sports
Illustrated SI dot com and talking about the Bengals, he
looked at the Jermaine Pratt trade request and the value
look for Jermaine Pratt. The writing is kind of on

(26:43):
the wall. They could shed five point six million dollar salary,
that could create more cap room, that could gain an asset.
But Ian Rabaport believes that there will be teams interested
in service. He said the Bengals will have a market
should they decide to trade him in order to free

(27:04):
up more cash to continue re signing their offensive weapons.
But if you're the Cincinnati Bengals, it you're not going
to fetch a mid round pick for Jermaine Pratt. You
might not even trade him for a pick in the
twenty twenty five draft. But if you're getting a sixth
or seventh rounder for Jermaine Pratt and he doesn't want
to be here and you're willing to shed some of

(27:25):
that salary, is that the best business decision at this point?

Speaker 2 (27:28):
I think it's very similar. Yeah, it is. I think
it's very similar to Joe Mixon a year ago. Yeah,
basically which is hey to trade him, then you get
a seventh round pick out of it or whatever, and
then that seventh round pick was then used to trade
for Khalil Herbert later on in the season. So yeah,

(27:50):
I thought it was also interesting too. Ian Rappaport was
basically talking about what makes Jermaine Pratt a player teams
want to go after, and he called him a leader
in the locker room and a guy who wears the
green dot. I would never consider Jermaine. I'm not in

(28:13):
the locker room, but I wouldn't consider Jermaine Pratt a
leader in the locker room. Wouldn't be the first thing.
I think. He also was so bad at wearing the
green dot that they gave it to a Keen Davis
Gaither when Logan Wilson went down. Jermaine Pratt couldn't wear
the green dot. So that's a good point. I don't
think that Pratt has this extensive reputation as being this

(28:35):
guy that you want in your locker room. Can't lose him. Yeah,
and so because of that, and also because you know
teams know that the Bengals are probably going to cut him,
well in that case, yeah, you're not gonna get very
much from him. He goes way down. It helps him
to be traded because then he plays on that five
and a half six million dollar deal as opposed to
hitting free agency and really truly understanding his worth.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Yeah, uh, let's uh, let's take a break, let's come
back and uh we'll open up the phone lines five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
We'll talk to you.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Still got to talk to Adam Bound, still got to
talk to Bob Man Jean, still got to talk to
you with your talkbacks as well. It's since he three
sixty a service of Skyline Chili on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
Are you a business? Here we go?

Speaker 3 (29:29):
Welcome back rolling along nour one since he three sixty
thanks the Skyline Chili on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
We're gonna go to the phone lines in just a second.
Before we do that, Austin, can you explain to me,
as someone who is not aware I privy of this,
what what is going on with JJ Watt?

Speaker 5 (29:49):
So?

Speaker 2 (29:49):
JJ Watt owns a soccer team, Yes, and the goalie
of that soccer team sent JJ a message and said, hey,
you fancy coming out of retirement to play for the Bengals.
This was months ago, and JJ said, if you shut

(30:12):
you know, don't give up a goal the rest of
the season. I'll do it. Okay. Since then, ten consecutive games,
ten consecutive clean sheets by the goalkeeper. So you know,
JJ now is like, all right, well, I gotta start
looking at, you know, real estate in Cincinnati. He's got

(30:32):
another little one on the way. Yeah, things got got
to tweet about Greater's and Montgomery in the other day.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
Still looks like he's in pretty good shape. Oh yeah,
appears to be in great shit. It seems like he's okay, okay,
So something to watch for.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
By the way, tone our poll question today brought to
you by Revivefitnesssystems dot Com and coach PJ. Street.

Speaker 3 (30:51):
It's not the Red Sox. We didn't go Red Sox
verse Red Sox.

Speaker 5 (30:55):
No.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
I didn't put that one up there. This was because
me and your mood. You must be on a vacation movie.

Speaker 5 (31:01):
No.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
I got a tweet today from Ronnie Iron representing the
Natty out there in Sonny Hotzona, Sonny Hozona, And I
don't remember ever getting a tweet from Ronnie ron before okay.
And so because of that got me fired up, and
it made me think, what's the best vacation state? Options?
Are Florida, Arizona, North or South Carolina, the Carolinas Okay

(31:26):
or other? In reply below, okay, so right now, fifty
five percent say Florida okay, thirty seven and a half
percent say the Carolinas, just two and a half percent
say Arizona, and five percent say other. But I haven't
got any replies, So okay, I don't know. I like that.

(31:49):
Where do you vote? What do you stand? I'm Florida,
all right, I'm a Florida guy.

Speaker 5 (31:52):
Man.

Speaker 3 (31:52):
We'll retweet it because of the dakery deck, right, That's
that's where I'm at. Give me more of that. Uh,
let's take a first call of the day. Uh, Mike
is calling in. What's up, Mike?

Speaker 7 (32:07):
Well, you can have Florida all day long. I'll take
California any day of the week over the sewer that
is officially known as Florida. With the third biggest state
population in the country now and Tampa top five, I
think in population, and Florida has become over crowded.

Speaker 8 (32:27):
To the max. And and it's it's Sue it's kind
of a dirty sewer in my opinion. Okay, it's really
crowded there. Man, California's got bigger population, but it's so
much bigger than.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
The traffic gets me though. The traffic at times is
just a lot.

Speaker 8 (32:45):
Well, it just depends you don't go there to just
drive around on a freeway.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Man, that's true, you know, And then go there and find.

Speaker 8 (32:53):
Your spot where there's Newport or Valve anywhere about. Go
off of Santa Barber's. Just they're never hot.

Speaker 3 (33:00):
I went that my cousin was living in in in
California for a time and and UC played at U
c l A years ago, and we went out. We
made the trip. I went to Newport Beach and we
we ate at this place. I think it was called
Steak on Ocean.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
It was the best.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
It was such a good steak and they had like
a vanilla old fashion. It's what I remember almost most
about that trip. You see, did win the game, they
they beat U c l A. But that that steak
in old fashion was phenomenal. On Newport Beach, well.

Speaker 8 (33:32):
That's real cool. And Balboa's is right down the street.
They're some of the best surfing in California, right on
a place called the Break. It's where the jetty goes
out from Bali surfing suck. Okay, I got a couple
of baseball things guys that didn't allow me. But I
think that the Bengals want to be guaranteed of a

(33:54):
good draft. They surreptitiously asked less sneak Jason like or
how he rosenbaumed to under the table advise them.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
I like that.

Speaker 8 (34:05):
I like, I don't trust them, man, what do you say, Austin,
I don't trust them to well, I don't.

Speaker 2 (34:12):
I'm with you.

Speaker 3 (34:13):
As much equity as they have built up with Joe
Burrow and what this team's done, they have, they don't
have equity when it comes to drafting they have.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
They have missed in the draft.

Speaker 8 (34:24):
Just like Belichick. Just like Belichick. I still don't know
how he pulled that off. That makes him even a
greater coach than I realized what he was. Anyway, I
was just kind of joking this Rogers thing. I don't know.
I was thinking maybe the Raiders, But i've heard anything
on what the Raiders are looking for a court unless

(34:46):
they're waiting for next year, because I hear next year
the quarterback drap will be better than this year.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
But if there, if they're waiting, no, if they're if
they're waiting for next year, Roger would be a good
one year fit.

Speaker 5 (35:01):
Though.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
I feel like, yeah, that's true.

Speaker 8 (35:04):
And I mean, if Pete Carroll can't sell you on
coming there, then nobody's gonna sell you, correct. And then
with Tom up up there being the guru, I just
find it so alluring. If I'm up he's an old
player or young player. I just think it makes sense
if if Aaron's or if if Rogers is into that,

(35:26):
but he's his days are limited.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Right, Tony, Yeah, I think a year maybe two at
most for Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 8 (35:36):
I want to move on to baseball real quick. My buddies,
you know, keep calling me about different teams, and I said,
you know that are similar scenarios of Reds Tampa's while
up in there a few other obviously, but I told him,
I said, the only thing that they have the Red's
head that you don't have is the l A daily Bruce.

(35:56):
And that's a big, big deal, if you know.

Speaker 3 (36:00):
It's my biggest takeaway right now. If the Reds can't
put something competitive together during the LA tenure in Cincinnati.
It will go down as one of the biggest failures
in organization history because you have you have such a unicorn,
you have such a unique opportunity, You've got money to spend.
If they drop the ball on this, it will be

(36:22):
one of the biggest failures that this organization has had.

Speaker 8 (36:26):
In my like my buddy in Tampa, Tampa's got a
lot of good starting pitchers, a bunch of them, and
uh and the Reds do too. And that's why I
think it's so nice a luxury because louder and the
kids from ah from where Clemson what's his name? Rush
or you know I'm talking.

Speaker 3 (36:43):
They got Chase, They got Chase Burns that's still coming
up as well. So yeah, they have opportunities.

Speaker 8 (36:50):
Yeah, they don't have to rush either one of them guys.
So the Reds have a big luxury over over most
other building teams bury some of Tampa situation, but they
don't have Ellie. Yeah and one other quickie. How in
the world, Tampa is pretty high. Now. They got a
couple of young guys coming up, cam and Arrows one

(37:12):
of them and the short stuff Carlilos Williams. They're gonna
they're gonna start this year. They're really high on their team.
Uh and but they don't have a I don't see
major League Baseball allowing Tampa Bay to play in the
postseason led along the World Series in eleven thousands states.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
That is a good point. That is good.

Speaker 8 (37:34):
How do you do that?

Speaker 2 (37:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 8 (37:36):
I don't think allow it.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
That's a good but that's a good point. Maybe they
could run out Great American Ballpark get some playoff baseball here.

Speaker 8 (37:45):
I mean, if they wanted to go to Miami, they could,
but that's not fair to the local fans. That's a
good drive all the way over to Miami.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
If they woulay in like hmmm, like Atlanta or somewhere
like that.

Speaker 8 (38:02):
Yeah, maybe, but either way, you know, also the fans
are going, then I don't want to drive. A lot
of fans are older.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
They don't get they don't have any fans anyways, Mike.

Speaker 8 (38:12):
Yeah, but you know what I'm thinking is it's October.
They don't even need the roof on the stadium.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
It's true because maybe.

Speaker 8 (38:22):
Now by then the weather cools down. I'm not real
familiar with Florida fall. I'm sure it's still could be
pretty hot. But but uh, otherwise they'd have to add
seats down to Steinbrenner Field. Can you imagine playing down there?

Speaker 2 (38:36):
They are they are adding seats. I do know that
they are adding seats for the regular season. I just
don't know. It's still not going to be, you know,
at a major league caliber field.

Speaker 8 (38:48):
Yeah, I just wanted to throw that out there. I
tell you, guys, that's a.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
Good point, Mike. I appreciate it. Have a good one.
I think it's wild that inside their own division, Tampa
is going into the Yankees. Like that's that's Yankees all
year long. Like that's their off season facility as well. Yep,
Like it's it's where they send people down to rehab.

(39:12):
Like the center of the Yankee universes down there, And
if you've ever been around that area, it's all it's
like you're in the Bronx, right. Everything is New York Yankees.
So I'm fascinated to see just what it looks like
once the regular season rolls around. And kudos to the
Yankees for just letting them do that. Yes, it's insane, weird.

(39:34):
What would Tampa do for a playoff game? I would
love to see a Tampa uh in Sacramento Alcs. Okay,
going back and forth between two minor league boys.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
Let's see what we got and then the Reds would
sweep either one of them. Man, now we're talking. Now,
we're talking brighter days ahead. Let's take a break. We'll
wrap up our number one. Let's lead into Adam Baum
with the little Sean Miller post game from last night
after Xavier's win over Providence since he three to sixty
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, a service of Skyline Chile, ESPN,

(40:14):
welcome back since the three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
Thanks to Skyline Chile.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
Xavier last night in a must win as every game
I believe as they must win for the Xavier Musketeers
going forward. They beat Providence ninety one eighty two. Some
good performances last night. Freemantle twenty three to nine. Ryan
Conwell added seventeen, Swain added thirteen, But it was twenty
six off the bench for Dante Maddox Junior, including six

(40:46):
to nine from beyond the arc, that sparked a twenty
two to H run twenty two to OH run in
the first half that put Xavier up forty five to
thirty at the break, they pretty much cruise into the
second half. They win at nine eighty two. Here is
we're gonna talk to Adam Baum at the top of
our two. So in order to push into that, here's

(41:08):
a little Sean Miller after last night's win.

Speaker 9 (41:11):
I think any win on the road in the Big
East is something that all of us, as competitors and coaches,
players cove it. There's a very few feelings that are
better than being able to go on the road in
front of a great crowd like we have here at Providence,
play against the team and plays really hard in together
and come away with the victory. This obviously was a

(41:34):
pivotal game for us in a lot of ways, and
I think we're really static and thrilled to leave here
with a win. I also am proud to be up
here with Dante.

Speaker 5 (41:48):
You know, in the.

Speaker 9 (41:49):
New world that we're in in college basketball, and you
leave a program like he left a winning program at
Toledo in which he had a huge impact, you know,
you want things to be seamless and you want success
to come right away, and unfortunately it doesn't always work
that way. And for Dante it could be the first
one to tell you for no lack of effort. He's

(42:11):
one of the hardest working players that I've coached, loves
the game. He puts in time every single day. But
he's had great moments for us, but it really hasn't
clicked until I would say at some point here late
January and certainly the entire month of February. It is
clearly clicked now, and it was a shame that over

(42:33):
the weekend at Villanova, if you watch that game, that
his individual performance didn't help us leave with the victory.
Because as outstanding as he was in this game tonight,
he was equally outstanding in Philadelphia. His shot making tonight
in the first half and the second, I mean it
gave us a lead that we were unable to relinquish,

(42:54):
regardless of how poor we played from that point on.
But he was just incredible.

Speaker 2 (42:58):
But I guess my point bringing it up.

Speaker 9 (43:00):
Is in the world of when it doesn't work, I leave,
or you know it doesn't work, man, I wish I
would have made a different choice playing the coach. Trust me,
I know he's had some moments where he's probably second
guests and everything, but he has fought through. He has
stayed with it, he has continued to practice. His attitude

(43:21):
is excellent, and it's just fun to watch a guy
climb through this and come out on the other side
and be at his best in this pivotal time. He's
a terrific player. I'm so happy we have him, and
most importantly, I'm just I'm really thrilled for both us
and him that he has fought the good fight and
he's playing the way he's playing right now, because there

(43:44):
will be plenty of games in December November where you
wouldn't have felt the same way about Dante as a player.
He's always had it in there. He needed to get
more comfortable, We needed to do a better job coaching him,
and it's all really come together. So again, a big
reason we won tonight's game is the individual play of him,
and I'm really really.

Speaker 2 (44:04):
Happy for him, all right.

Speaker 3 (44:06):
That is a part of Sean Miller postgame comments praising
Dante Maddox. It's one of the things, Austin, We've talked
about this many times this year that I appreciate with
Sean Miller. He is not afraid to criticize individual players.
But on the other side of that, when they deserve praise.
He will individually praise them as well, and I think
he does a great job of balancing that for the

(44:28):
Xavier Musketeers, and I'm sure that goes a long way
with the players of that program as well. What we'll
do now, we'll take a break, we'll finish up the
first hour. We'll come back. We'll talk to Adam Baum
more Muskies on the other side of the break. It's
since he three to sixty. Thanks to our friends. It's

giving you back the flame and desire that is so
important when you love someone. More importantly, if you're feeling
sluggish and tired, you're not sleeping well, workouts aren't that great.
Most of this is contributed to low testosterone, so if so,

(45:28):
you can make an appointment to fix that today. Tri

all of this is just ninety nine dollars, and if
you sign up for testosterone treatment on the day of

Run a business and not this is Cincy Shirts Cincy
three sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsored in part by
Cincy Shirts. Cincy Shirts All Cincy, all Day. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 3 (46:38):
Welcome back our two thanks to our friends Cincy Shirts.
It's ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincy three to sixty.
Thanks for joining us. We uh, we're moving along. We
just heard from Sean Millard and our number one. Let's
talk to a man all in in many ways with
the Xavier men's basketball program. Findal on the Sean Miller

(47:01):
podcast as well. It's our good friend Adam Baum joining
us now.

Speaker 5 (47:04):
Hi Adam, Hey, Tony. How are you man?

Speaker 2 (47:07):
I'm great? How are you?

Speaker 5 (47:09):
I'm good.

Speaker 2 (47:10):
I'm good.

Speaker 5 (47:11):
Got back from Providence not that long ago, and all
with a win, which is nice.

Speaker 3 (47:17):
It it certainly started in a unique way. Providence couldn't
miss early in the game. Talk about the ability early
on on the road. We heard Sean Miller talk about
the environment at Providence, but early on to wather an
onslaught like that and then put together a run like
they were able to put together in that first half.
I think shows a lot about a team and its maturity. Yeah,

(47:41):
And honestly, if you if you look at the whole picture.

Speaker 5 (47:43):
Of the game, how important it.

Speaker 10 (47:45):
Was that they were able to do that, because you know,
Providence made it interesting again late in that game, but
you had to beat down sixteen to five early on
on the road and really do pay Maddox.

Speaker 5 (47:57):
You know, if you if you watch that game, you
saw him hit just shot after shot to bring them
back and then to really spur that run what ended
up being a twenty two to nothing run and put
them in control of the game. And it was a
good thing too, because you know, Providence never quit the
rest of the way.

Speaker 3 (48:15):
You mentioned Dante Maddox, Sean Miller goes out of his
way to to single him out after the game talk
about his progression and the confidence that you see now
and what a weapon it is to be able to
bring a player off the bench that on any given
night could erupt like you saw last night.

Speaker 5 (48:33):
Yeah. You know, I've been covering Xavier in some form
or fashion for you know, seven eight years now. I
can't necessarily remember another guy in recent memory that got
off to the start that he got off to this
season where it was like, you know, you go back
and look there there's a few games where he played
a handful of minutes where you know, he barely played

(48:55):
it all, a few games where he didn't make a shot,
and now it's like, for whatever reason, he has stuck
with it and it's all starting to click now. I mean,
he's given them another punch off the bench, especially when
you know there might be a night where Ryan Conwell
doesn't have it going or Zach Fremantle struggling to have

(49:18):
another guy that can come out there and knock down
shots the way that he can. He's really become a
weapon for this team, and it's the it's kind of
the perfect time for the Xavior team to find that
in Dante Maddox, where man, he's let him in store
scoring the last two games, and he's going to start
getting a lot more attention from opposing defenses and it'll

(49:41):
be interesting to see how Xavier navigates that one. But
what does that open up for Xavier going forward? If
teams get too focused on Dante Maddox, how can they
potentially exploit that down the stretch here?

Speaker 3 (49:55):
You know, I listened to some of Sean Miller's post
game and at different times this year Sean Miller is
not weary of going after players the team or individual
players when they are not living up to their expectations.
On the other side, last night, you see the opposite
of a coach that is willing to single someone out

(50:16):
and praise them for the work that they've continued to
put in. I can't help but think because not every
coach is like that, Not every coach will single players out.
But I can't help but think that that goes a
long way from a respect level in that locker room.
With the accountability that Sean Miller holds those players to,
but also the ability to praise them when necessary, I
feel like that goes a long way in the locker room.

Speaker 5 (50:38):
Yeah. Absolutely. And you know this is Dante Maddox and
what Sean said about him last night at his press conference.
It really epitomizes everything that Sean you know, talks about
as it relates to college basketball and a season where
it's like, hey, look, it's not always going to be perfect.

(50:58):
It's not going to always go the way you want
it to go, both individually and for a team. But hey,
when we get into late January, when we get into February,
when the games start to get really really important. That's
where I want you to find your footing and start
to feel like, hey, I figured this thing out. And
that's what Dante Maddox has done. And I think if

(51:18):
nothing else, what you heard from Sean Miller last night
was very genuine and that he appreciates someone that can
get through the tough times and say, hey, I know
that there are going to be good times on the
other side of this. I think it's a powerful thing
for this team, not just like for Dante individually, but
for the rest of the guys to say, look like,

(51:40):
here's a great example of a guy who nothing was
really going his way in November and December, and because
he's stuck with it, because he's stuck with the plan
and he kept working on his craft, he's sort of
come out on the other side and he's become really
a go to player at this point for Xavier. So
I think guys know that stuff and they're certainly going

(52:02):
to pay attention to to Sean praising him.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
We talk about the need for this team to find
those second and third and fourth options. Are you at
the point now with this team that you're pretty confident
going in game in and game out at least what
you're gonna get from from the top three or four
scorers on this on this ball club, Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 5 (52:22):
I think you know, Dante Maddox has he's sort of
emerged in a way where it's like, Okay, who might
it be tonight?

Speaker 2 (52:30):
Is it going to be Dante?

Speaker 5 (52:31):
Is Conwell going to find it? Freemantle has been so consistent.
But yeah, I think I think they know who they're there,
their horses are, if you will, and uh, and it's
important that you know they've added to that stable right
now in the season. So I think on a given night,
you know, they've got three four guys. You know, even

(52:52):
Marcus Foster recently has done it. Daleen Swain's been doing it.
So I think that they've got a handful of guys
that they can really count on to give them a
spark and try to ignite them. Sustaining it for forty
minutes is still still a little bit of an issue
for Xavier, but I think they're comfortable knowing that they've
got guys that can produce.

Speaker 3 (53:13):
You mentioned sustaining it is it now at this point
of the season, it kind of is what the team
is or are they still you're still striving to find
that full game. They have been snake bitten so many
times in the last couple minutes of games. You mentioned
last night that game getting closer than it probably should have.
Any rhyme or reason why this team has struggled in
some of those situations to close things.

Speaker 5 (53:33):
Out, Yeah, I think that's that's probably been the hardest
thing to wrap your head around this year, is that
for a team that has so much experience, that has
so much talent that you know it puts themselves in
positions to win, you know, really every game, with the
exception of a couple, it doesn't make a lot of
sense they why they have faltered when it matters the

(53:56):
most at the end of games. I thought last night
in particular, providens to me there was like almost a
vibe of they got a little comfortable, like, oh yeah,
we're updig we're dominating this team, and they just got
a little bit comfortable. And that is concerning to me
because if you're Xavier, you're a team that's you're living

(54:17):
on the bubble right now, and guess what, You're going
to continue to live on the bubble because none of
the games on your schedule. The rest of the way,
with the exception of Creton at home, are necessarily going
to move the needle for you to make a big
jump like, oh, they beat this team, they're in the field. No,
they're going to be games where you have to win
them and you have to hope that other things on

(54:37):
the bubble go your way because you're probably going to
stay right around the bubble. So they should not be
a team at any point in time the rest of
the way that gets comfortable, that thinks that a game
is in the bag. They have to have a killer
instinct and for whatever reason, you know, last night, I
thought they had it for a very long stretch in

(54:58):
the first half and early in this second half, and
then it.

Speaker 2 (55:01):
Just left them.

Speaker 5 (55:02):
So, uh, it is a problem. But I think, you know,
knowing Sean Miller, knowing his coaching staff, they're going to
keep working on trying to fix it.

Speaker 3 (55:11):
You mentioned the margin for air. Obviously, the Villanova game
doesn't go the way you needed it to, and we've
seen Villanova now come away with some very very good
wins that have upped their resume. But when you do
look at the schedule remaining with with six contests, five
of those contests are against teams that are below Xavier
in the Big East standings, which would mean any of

(55:31):
those losses are devastating from an NCAA tournament standpoint. Creighton
is at home probably gonna be a toss up game
when it comes to the spread and the odds and
things like that. Does it feel like it's must win
every game on the way out barring some type of
run in the Big East Tournament.

Speaker 5 (55:51):
Yeah, I think that that's the way you have to
look at it. That's the way I think Xavior has
to look at it, right, and they they're they're gonna
do the thing that every team does. You know, it's
one day at a time, one game at a time.
But the truth is, if you want to be an
nca tournament team, you need to win these games. The
rest of the way. You certainly can't lose any bad ones.

(56:12):
And because if you win them all, you put yourself
in a position to go to Madison Square Garden for
the Big Eiast Tournament. Say, hey, we're feeling pretty good
about our resume. You know, we want a bunch of
games down the stretch. Now we can just go out
and play at Madison Square Garden and see what happens.
But yeah, it's hard to look at their path any

(56:35):
other way than win the rest of them.

Speaker 3 (56:39):
It becomes part of the problem that they put themselves
into this situation, is there anything? And again, if they
run the table and they get the next six, they're
a twenty one win team. Does it still feel like,
as you said, even in that scenario, you're you wanted

(57:00):
to avoid it going into the year because we've seen
it in years past, But you still feel like you'd
be going to Madison Square Garden with the pressure to
at least win a game to give yourself the chance.

Speaker 5 (57:11):
Yeah, and as you said, they've kind of this is
the situation that they, to a certain extent, have put
themselves in, right, And you know, I think the bubble
is a very uncomfortable place. You know, Xavier has been
there quite a bit since I've been around the program,
and it's like you never to me, there's a positive

(57:32):
and there's a negative to it. Right. The positive is
you feel like you're already playing NCAA tournament games. You
feel like you're playing for your life right now, and
that can be a powerful thing for a team. It
can be a motivating thing. The negative is that any
missteps along the way that they can be devastating. And
I think no matter what happens the rest over these

(57:54):
final six regular season games, this is probably going to
be a Xavier team that goes to the Big East
Tournament feeling like, hey, we got we gotta win a
few of these things, if not the whole thing. And
you know, that can be as I said, that can
be a great motivating factor for a team, sure, or
it can be a little too much pressure for them
to handle. And I'm very interested to see how it

(58:15):
plays out because we've talked about this before on your show.
There are a lot of guys on Xavier's roster who
this is the end of the road for them. They're
they're not gonna put on a college basketball jersey next year.
They're gonna go off try to play professionally somewhere that
life is gonna get real for them in a matter
of weeks. And if they're not willing to step up

(58:39):
and say, okay, I want this to end the right way,
you know, they're they're gonna they're gonna go right off
into the sunset and start the rest of their lives.
And they're gonna look back and wonder what.

Speaker 3 (58:49):
Yeah, uh, I remember years years ago Jerome Hunter seemed
like the biggest and best player in the Big East Tournament.
Is there a player on this roster that it maybe
hasn't tapped into all of the talent yet? You mentioned
you pretty much know at this point what freemanle is
going to give you. You know what Conwall is going to

(59:10):
give you. You know what swaying to an extent. Is it
Davion McKnight moore on the offensive end? Is it Jerome Hunter?
Is there another player that is still maybe coming into
their own that could be poised to help this team
take that next step when necessary?

Speaker 5 (59:26):
To me, honestly, it's three guys. It's Davion, It's Marcus Foster,
and it's Jerome Hunter. Those are all guys that, for
whatever reason this year, they have helped Xavier and they
have also kind of disappeared at times where maybe it's
been a game where man Davion turned it over four times,
or Marcus didn't make a shot in this game, or

(59:48):
man Jerome played fifteen minutes and he didn't have a rebound,
and those are things where that have popped up throughout
the season. This year with guys, and to me, I'm
looking at those three as hey, if you can be
more consistent, if you can play winning basketball.

Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
And to their credit, there have.

Speaker 5 (01:00:06):
Been times this year where they have, but right now
it's it's more important than it's ever been that they
get everyone involved, that they have meaningful performances, that they
do things that impact winning. And I think if they can,
if they can sort of get six or seven guys
instead of three or four guys in the fold on
a given night who are helping them win, I think

(01:00:28):
that'll go a long way towards this team winning basketball
games down the stretch. And that's really what they need
to do.

Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Essentially, what you're saying is they just need to be
all in.

Speaker 5 (01:00:37):
They need to be all in, Tony, tell.

Speaker 2 (01:00:41):
Me more about all in.

Speaker 5 (01:00:43):
So episode six just dropped this week. Okay, I'm very
happy with it. So this one our our director and editor,
Josh Sempstrot, he he wanted you know, if you if
you've watched the show, there have been the episodes have
kind of been different along the way. Sometimes they've included
an entire month of games. Sometimes they've included, you know,

(01:01:04):
three or four games. This was one where he wanted
to really slow it down and break down two very
important games on Xavior schedule and really take you into
the locker room, into the huddles, you know, into the
lead up and aftermath of these games. So those were
at Saint John's and then you count at home and
you know, this has been a blast, and we're already

(01:01:27):
working on episode seven. I'm gonna I'm going to see
our all in team here, Paul Fritchner and Gabe Brian
and in about an hour and we're going to talk
about our production for episode seven. So the wheels never stop.

Speaker 3 (01:01:41):
Yeah, when you see Paul, can you let him know
because he came on this program and he talked about
how much a fan he is of the show and
how he listens every day. And then, as Paul should know,
talkbacks usually happen an hour number two, segment two. Instead
of talkbacks, he called them callbacks, And I just can't
help but wonder for someone who listens to the show

(01:02:03):
every day, how he could mess that up.

Speaker 5 (01:02:05):
You know, I will bring that to his attention, because realistically,
if he is that big of a fan, he should
know your operation. And now they don't miss that you
like on my Mount Rushmore. You know, Austin Elmore, Tony Pike.
You guys are up at the top, So.

Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
Who are the other time? Yeah? Who else is on there?

Speaker 5 (01:02:25):
Adam Daniman and Jeremy Rown?

Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
Wow, there he is? I mean throws right to the
Ohio sportscaster of the year. Unbelievable.

Speaker 5 (01:02:35):
Yeah, but I'll put I'll put Paul to the fire today.

Speaker 3 (01:02:38):
When I say yeah, you gotta let him know it
was just a bad look on his behalf.

Speaker 2 (01:02:42):
On what else?

Speaker 3 (01:02:43):
Was a great segment, as has this always is when
we get to talk to you, Adam, What is the
easiest way to follow along with everything you got going
on as it relates to the Xavier Musketeers and where
and maybe when someone can run into you on your
lifelong journey to find more citrus.

Speaker 5 (01:03:01):
You know no one has actually brought me clementines this
year at Xavier. That that might be a product of
I'm moving around the arena with a camera now wherever
they used to have a laptop and I was stationared.

Speaker 2 (01:03:14):
I think people also know that you owe me a
debt that you haven't been paid. So until you do that,
you might not get any centrist from others.

Speaker 5 (01:03:21):
Well, as I told you, I'm I'm making plans. I
want to deliver it in personal.

Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
I didn't see you stop at the Georgetown game. You
were constantly moving.

Speaker 5 (01:03:30):
Yeah. Well the Georgetown game was interesting because I'm superstitious.
So I'm I'm moving around looking for a spot for
Xavier to start playing well, and then once they do,
I hunker down.

Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
You would say you're you're more superstitious than justitious.

Speaker 5 (01:03:47):
Exactly. That's exactly right.

Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
Okay, that's fair on it. What's the easiest way to
follow along with everything you got going on?

Speaker 5 (01:03:53):
Yeah, just Sean Miller pod on really all social channels, YouTube,
and then my Twitter is a J. Baum, so but
I mostly just tweet pictures of Clevin Tide.

Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
So yeah, this feels like a call for help right now.

Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
Adam, thank you man. We appreciate your time as.

Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
Always, Thanks for having me. Guys there, he is Adam Baum.
One day he'll repay that debt.

Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
Yeah, he better. Yeah, we're almost a year over a year.
I think what do we have next? Talkbacks are callbacks?
We've got talkbacks, but it's I just got a text
from Paul Fritchner. Oh, he said, tell Tony I'm a
fraud Wow, see self admitted. Please to own up to it.

Speaker 3 (01:04:37):
So so, Paul, since you're listening, Uh, you can if
you have the iHeart Radio app. Paul, you could leave
us a talk back, a callback, whatever you want to do.
You could be in the running to win a Cinci
Shirt gift card. Don't be a coward, Paul, leave us
a talkback, well said, Uh, talkbacks, callbacks, whatever you want
to call them.

Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
Fraudulent, it's another thing to be a coward.

Speaker 3 (01:04:56):
Amen, Preach, Mount Rushmore, Pike Elmore, Danoman Rawl. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati sports station Talkbacks. Next thanks to
our friends at Cinty Shirts.

Speaker 1 (01:05:08):

Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
Talkbacks are brought to you by Cincy Shirts since he Shirts.

Speaker 5 (01:05:54):
Hey, fellas, I got a straight up star venture. Good y'all.

Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
You got Jermaine Pratt, who's got to make a tackle
with the game on the line.

Speaker 4 (01:06:06):
You've got Dylan Mitchell, who's got to make a front
and of the.

Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
One and one with the game on the line.

Speaker 11 (01:06:13):
And then for our boy Jermaine Burton, well you got
to be his landlord.

Speaker 3 (01:06:18):
Oh man, I'll start Mitchell, I'll bench Pratt and I'll
cut being a landlord to Jermaine Burton. I'll start Mitchell,
bench Burton's landlord.

Speaker 5 (01:06:33):
Okay, what's wrong with Cam Newton? Call his former teammates losers?
There's no losers on that team. There's some Hall of
famers on that team.

Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
There's a local.

Speaker 5 (01:06:41):
Legend on that team.

Speaker 12 (01:06:43):
Maybe Cam's wearing them church Lady halfs a little too
tidy where sometimes or got some cte going on or something.
But you don't treat people that way, Cam, that's a
loser mentality, just like making a business decision and not
jumping on a thumba on Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
Fifty to get them Cove get him.

Speaker 13 (01:07:04):
It's so hard to say goodbye to Lucho A coast
and outy with me the memory of first SUPPOHI gild

(01:07:29):
thank you, luco El Capitan, goodbye good Man strong.

Speaker 2 (01:07:36):
I was moving strong for luco El copy Don Capy don,
thank you Luco goobye in all seriousness.

Speaker 14 (01:07:42):
I really I think we're gonna all miss Luco Costa.

Speaker 15 (01:07:45):
I definitely am.

Speaker 14 (01:07:46):
He was really fun to watch. It really helped our team.
I'm sad that its got messed up between the front
office and him. I hope that we keep bringing in
creative players, especially from South America, especially Argentina, and like
meld them with our American players and our player all
over the world because I think they bring a really

(01:08:08):
good fun style of play.

Speaker 2 (01:08:11):
I like that far up for seasons. Now meld them together.

Speaker 5 (01:08:14):
Let's go.

Speaker 16 (01:08:15):
It's Jason down to Halloway and Tennessee.

Speaker 5 (01:08:17):
Colline playing about the Rids. Come on.

Speaker 16 (01:08:19):
It's funny how you can't ever trust anything the medical
staff says or doesn't say when it comes to the Rids.
Spencer Steers got an injury already and we haven't even played,
and it goes back to last season that we didn't
even know about it. Can we ever trust anything the
Reds say or the medical staff doesn't say?

Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
What's going on up there?

Speaker 16 (01:08:38):
And now htt Louder is hurt and he hasn't even
thrown a pitch.

Speaker 2 (01:08:41):
Go Red Legs.

Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
Yeah, I just well, for the life of me, though,
I can't figure out the whole Spencer Steer thing.

Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
Yeah, and we don't know anything rightfully, Like we haven't
had a chance to talk to the medical people who
haven't talked to Terry Francona, like, we don't know for
sure the seriousness of any of that. But he was
also practicing as normal just the other day. First full
team workout is not until one day. And also these

(01:09:08):
guys have been hitting and working out in the offseason.
If you think Red Lauder showed up yesterday and his
elbow was sore from not pitching and it hasn't pitched
since September, well, then the guy's been working out. He's
been pitching, he's been throwing bullpens. That's where the sword
has comes from. We've got audio on that coming up
in a bit.

Speaker 17 (01:09:28):
The ponderance of the day is he a Red Sox
or a Red Sox? I believe the answer is yes.
Leads for one hundred and twenty million. I think you'd
be happy to be called a Boston Hano.

Speaker 2 (01:09:40):
Bland all right. One way, look at say often.

Speaker 18 (01:09:45):
I remember, oh my god, some grief about him saying
that Aaron Rodgers would be good fit and Pittsburgh. He
said that was crazy and everything like that. Now I'm
thinking God knows everything.

Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
Well, let's see what happens and then come back to
me with that same energy when Rogers falls on his
face in Pittsburgh. Hey, guys, talkback matters guy Happy Thursday.

Speaker 19 (01:10:11):
Hey, I don't know if this is true or not,
but I heard that there's a deal with T Higgins
being done next week four years, twenty seven million dollars
a year.

Speaker 2 (01:10:21):
Can you confirm that if possible? And the next thing is,
I think Roger's going to go to the Titans.

Speaker 19 (01:10:26):
They'll draft the number one pick, a quarterback, and then
he'll be underneath the Rogers. I think that would be
a great move for our offensive coordinator. We used to
have what's your thoughts on that?

Speaker 5 (01:10:38):
I do not know.

Speaker 2 (01:10:40):
I've heard nothing of the sort. I would sign up
for four years, twenty seven million. Yeah, I'd like to
know where you're getting that info. Listen, I have. I've
been asking around to people, and there seems to be
a lot of confidence that Higgins is going to be
a Bengal next year. That's all I can say. I

(01:11:04):
don't know anything about deals. I don't think anything's imminent,
but the confidence level seems to be very high. I
have an idea. I would sign up for four years
twenty seven million right now.

Speaker 20 (01:11:15):
I have an idea, and you guys are probably gonna laugh,
and that's okay.

Speaker 2 (01:11:19):
Anything we would do anyway.

Speaker 20 (01:11:20):
I think Russell might go to the Jets, where quarterbacks
go to die, and he probably deserves that. Aaron is
going to come to the Steelers. But Russell showed he
couldn't make that fifteen to twenty five yard pass for
the Steelers. But the Steelers almost did some damage in
the playoffs. But with Rogers, Steelers could be really tough.

Speaker 2 (01:11:45):
Okay, what about Aaron Rodgers makes you think from what
we've seen in the last two years, right, is Aaron
Rodgers that much better than Russell Wilson. I don't think so. Okay, guys, excuse.

Speaker 21 (01:11:59):
Me, my throat a little sore.

Speaker 15 (01:12:01):
But according to Athlon's Sports, Davante Adams is willing to
play for the Niners, the Rams, or the Chargers. And
if they get rid of Stafford, like you were saying, Tony,
you know, Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams always want to
be together, so I could see that happening. That'd be
a dangerous offense.

Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
So if I had to bet, I'd probably.

Speaker 15 (01:12:23):
Put my money on Rogers going to the Rams.

Speaker 4 (01:12:28):
Okay, okay, yeah, Just personally, if I was another team,
I would not be in a big hurry to trade
for Jermaine Pratt. I mean, some of them whiffs that tackles.
But maybe there is a little bit of interest. I
know some mock drafts, a couple of them. They have
the Bengals taking a linebacker from Alabama.

Speaker 2 (01:12:52):
Would I would like to see that happen. Sure I'd
be in on that. Sign me up in favor of it.

Speaker 22 (01:13:01):
Steal repping the nattie out here in Chili, Son Sona,
what up, Tony?

Speaker 2 (01:13:05):
What up?

Speaker 5 (01:13:05):
Buddy?

Speaker 21 (01:13:05):
What?

Speaker 22 (01:13:06):
I think I might have grooped up my top back
a minute ago because I'm currently at work trying to
sneak on his phone real talk.

Speaker 2 (01:13:12):
It's all good, though.

Speaker 22 (01:13:13):
I just want to give a little sum out to
you guys, city little something. I'm ready for baseball season
and Jermaine Pratt, Yeah, trade this guy, get some type
of value off up.

Speaker 2 (01:13:22):
The Fingals need to do something.

Speaker 22 (01:13:24):
And Trey Henderson thing, Yeah, sit back and chill, wait
till the right opportune time to strike.

Speaker 2 (01:13:30):
Then okay, ron what is your definition of chili? Sign
me up?

Speaker 5 (01:13:36):
Hello.

Speaker 23 (01:13:36):
This is former President ronald'riggan with a start, bench or
cuta a Tampa Sacramento playoff series, a Trey Hendrickson for
Miles Garrett trade or a UC and Xavier n.

Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
Championship game Austin. I'll start Miles Garrett, I'll bench U
see Xavier, I'll cut the Tampa sacrament until I'll flop
Garrett and.

Speaker 3 (01:14:03):
You see you want that in then I t I'll
take anything at this point, anything to give me life.

Speaker 5 (01:14:11):
Sony Beastick's the mail.

Speaker 8 (01:14:14):
Man out here on the streets near Reading High School
looking for those snow Warblers. Hey, your boys in the morning,
Canty in a gang.

Speaker 20 (01:14:23):
We're trying to tell me that Joe Burrow might be
just like Carson Palmer below in that hate smoke around.

Speaker 8 (01:14:31):
Trying to figure out whether or not they're gonna make
it or not make it what you think you guys
have another best day ever.

Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
We'll make it. We're gonna make it. I hope we
don't find out we're gonna make it.

Speaker 24 (01:14:42):
Gentlemen, this is Paul Fritchener, and as I sit here
eating my wonderful Chick fil a sandwich. I would just
like to tuck my tail between my legs and apologize
to the former president, to Ronnie, to all of the
greats of talkback callback Nation. My apologies everybody for disrespecting
this wonderful segment on ESPN fifteen thirty and two of

(01:15:03):
the Mount Rushmore Figures the Cincinnati sports media Landscape.

Speaker 5 (01:15:06):
Gentlemen, please accept my apology.

Speaker 3 (01:15:08):
Wow, Paul, I'll accept it. Yea on my end, apologies accepted.
See now see what Paul did. He nipped it in
the butt right away, whereas Baum has let this continue
for almost a year.

Speaker 2 (01:15:20):
Yeah, I think it's over a. Yeah, I mean, Paul
hand Up made a mistake, admits it. I don't know
that I've ever said the exact details for what Adam
owes me. But Adam and Adam was doing some work
here one day at our studios. Yeah, they were shooting
a commercial for Western and Southern and it was with

(01:15:43):
Chris Collinsworth. And when they come in, it's a full
set and they use our space and they're really nice
about it, and it's it's it's cool to see them
produce that. And Adam was a part of that, and
I had coffee creamer in the fridge, and before I
had even gotten to work, Adam sends me a picture

(01:16:04):
of my coffee creamer and says, I owe you some
coffee creamer. He just took it. So I got to
work and I realized what was going on, and I said,
if you could just get me one of those footballs
autographed by Chris Collinsworth, that would mean a lot to me.
He said, no problem, I'll get it to you. No problem,

(01:16:26):
that's problem. Not even a hesitation, that's problem. He was like,
I'll get you one. I said, all right, sweet. That
was almost eighteen months ago.

Speaker 8 (01:16:35):
That anyways, I like him, dude, And he's right.

Speaker 5 (01:16:43):
We're losers. Most of us are losers.

Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
We're fat, we got no dead end jobs. We just
show up.

Speaker 5 (01:16:53):
That's all we do.

Speaker 14 (01:16:54):
We're the definition of a loser.

Speaker 19 (01:16:56):
So he is right, nobody's going to miss a casta
that he doesn't even recognize his name or nose.

Speaker 2 (01:17:05):
I disagree with that. Hey, guys, just talk back, batters guy,
he does, shove that mic down. God man, this old
t b MG, Oh my gosh, that's good all right,
that was our last one. That's good man. Short and

(01:17:28):
sweet today.

Speaker 5 (01:17:28):
Well done.

Speaker 2 (01:17:30):
Everyone's got the flu. That's what I think I can
I can feel that I'm getting closer, but I know
I'm I need a couple of days.

Speaker 3 (01:17:40):
You and I are not here on Monday. No, we're not,
and that will be helpful to me to get an
extra day off of the voice. We will We'll keep
the We started this hour with college hoops. We'll continue
the college hoops conversation when we come back. I've got
a problem with Neil Payne. I don't say that about
many guests of this show, but what he did to

the city of Cincinnati and the fans of the Cincinnati
Bearcats is criminal. We'll dive into that as well as
some of the local schedules upcoming. There are teams that
are now vouching for postseason positioning seating. There are also
teams that are still playing for their postseason at large life.
Let's dive into what that looks like for a couple

(01:18:23):
of the local teams when we come back. Your phone
calls are welcome as well. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,

all still to go before catching up with Moeger for

Speaker 3 (01:19:15):
Welcome back since He three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station. Thank you to our friends at Cincy Shirts.
It was just a couple of days ago Austin that
Neil Payne threw out a bubble watch on ESPN dot
com and it had the Bearcats at a sixty seven
percent chance to make the tournament. That number went up

(01:19:37):
into the seventies after they knocked off BYU and the
thought was well that number would continue to grow for
the Cincinnati Bearcats. Unfortunately, in Neil Payne's latest bubble watch
for the NCAA Tournament, that number has gone down significantly
for the Cincinnati Bearcats. When you start in the big twelve.

(01:20:00):
All of a sudden, the should be in category is
much smaller. It does not contain the Cincinnati Bearcats anymore.
It does have the Houston Cougars, Iowa State Cyclones, Kansas Jayhawks,
Arizona Wildcats, and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Is all locks
to get in the NCAA Tournament. The good news for
the Bearcats those top two teams that are locks for
the tournament are still on the Bearcats schedule. That creates

(01:20:23):
a huge opportunity for this team. There's a ninety two
chance given to the Baylor Bears as should be in.
That's significant for the Bearcats because Baylor will come here
to Fifth Third Arena. That's still an opportunity for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats are listed on the same bubble with work
to do, as BYU, West Virginia and Kansas State. The

(01:20:45):
good news for the Bearcats in that sense is they
have a road trip at West Virginia Wednesday of next
week and they'll host Kansas State at Fifth Third Arena.
So those teams are still on the schedule as well
as TCU still on the Bearcats schedule. So the thought
is the number now given to the Bearcats is just

(01:21:07):
twenty seven percent. That is significantly lower, and Neil Payton
had this to say, we call the Bearcats one of
the most polarizing and puzzling teams in our data, and
it turns out they were one of the teams most
affected by the adjustment to ESPN analytics model in a
bad way. They dropped down to twenty seven percent in
the update. Attorney Odds more accurately, were accurately reflecting their

(01:21:28):
challenges as the ninth best and net team in a
Big twelve that figures to send eight teams to the
Attorney at most. That said, the Bearcats do rank with
a respectable thirty six and BPI and will have at
least four games to potentially add significant numbers to their
bubble hopes with Iowa State, West Virginia, Baylor, and Houston.

(01:21:49):
Not what you want to hear if you're a Bearcat fan,
but let's just call it what it is. With seven
games still remaining, I still think the path for the
Bearcats is five and two. I think five and two
gets you to ten and ten in the Big Twelve,
and I think it's hard to keep a five hundred
team out of the NCAA Tournament from the Big Twelve.
That would require the Bearcats to win the games they'll

(01:22:11):
be favored to win Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and TCU.
That gets you to eight wins. I think the Bearcats
will have to win at West Virginia. That gets you
to nine. Where it gets Harry is that leaves at
Iowa State, at Houston and home versus Baylor as that
need for the tenth win. I think ten wins gets
them in the tournament.

Speaker 5 (01:22:32):
I really do.

Speaker 3 (01:22:34):
Now, if you want to start splitting hairs and you
get to nine wins and maybe you win two games
in the Big Twelve tournament, maybe that does it. But
that just leaves too much to chance. If I'm looking
at the Cincinnati Bearcats tournament, hope, so Iowa State is huge.
If they go to Iowa State on Saturday and they
get a win, this conversation turns immediately for the Cincinnati Bearcats.

(01:22:57):
If they lose, it certainly puts the pressure on it
and a ternam in a sense of what we're talking
about with the Xavier Musketeers of almost having to win
out to see your NCAA tournament hopes come to life.
For what it's worth for the Xavier Musketeers out of
the Big East, Marquette, Saint John's, Creighton, and Yukon all
listed as locks, and the Xavier Musketeers have a nineteen

(01:23:20):
percent chance to make the NCAA tournament. Neil Payne has
this to say. Bouncing back from a bad loss to Villanova,
Xavier kept its tourney odds from completely evaporating with a
win at Providence. Still, the Musketeer's resume against top competition
is lacking. They are three to eight against the BPI
top fifty seven to ten versus the top one hundred,
and they are running out of chances to bolster those

(01:23:41):
marks before their conference tourney. Five of the next six
for the Xavier Musketeers come against teams that are below
them in the Big East rankings, meaning any of those
losses would be devastating. The one team they're looking up
at will be a home game at the Centa Center
against Creighton that could possibly give them a boost to

(01:24:02):
their tournament resume. The only other team I would say
at this point from an SEC standpoint, in a very
good SEC, Kentucky is pretty much a lock to make
the NCAA tournament. They still have some really good opportunities
going forward down the stretch, their schedule still consist of
the number two ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, the number one

(01:24:24):
ranked Auburn, and twenty one ranked Missouri still left on
the schedule for the Kentucky Wildcats. And the surprise in
all of this in the ACC year one of Pat Kelsey.
They have Louisville listed as a lock right now to
make the NCAA tournaments. Unbelievable what Pat Kelsey has done.
Twelve and two are the Cardinals in conference play, nineteen

(01:24:46):
and six overall, Notre Dame, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Pitt
Cal and Stanford the rest of the way out. That's
an awesome, awesome opportunity for Louisville to continue to win
and put pressure on Duke, who is just ahead of
them at thirteen and one and Clemson at twelve and two.
So big opportunities remain for some local teams. As it

(01:25:09):
relates to the Dayton Flyers, they were winners last night
against Fordham. It feels like Dayton at this point is
going to have to win the A ten tournament. They're
gonna finish up with Ducane, Loyola, Chicago, Rhode Island, Richmond,
Saint Louis and VCU and the Norse. The Norse out
of the Horizon League will surely need to win the

(01:25:30):
Horizon League tournament if they want any hope at dancing.
Their six and eight mark in the Horizon League not
good enough. They take on Green Bay tomorrow. Milwaukee, Wright State, Iundy, Purdue,
Fort Wayne, and Youngstown State will close the season out
for NKU and again for NKU. You know, it's a

(01:25:51):
one bid league. You try to get to play your
best basketball by the time the conference tournament rolls around
and see what shakes out. But it's an opportunity for
a lot of teams locally to still control a little
bit of their own destiny. And for the Bearcats, let's
face it, that loss to West Virginia it felt like
the end. It felt like we weren't even going to
be having these conversations anymore. And since then, wins out UCF,

(01:26:16):
wins against BYU, wins against Utah three in a row
have at least kept the ball rolling. The hard part
for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Can you find a win at
Iowa State, can you find a win at Houston? Or
can you take care of Baylor who disposed of the
Bearcats rather easily on the road. Can you take care
of them in your own building. If so, you at

(01:26:37):
least give yourself a chance to maybe get to that
five hundred mark in the Big Twelve. And from there
you see what happens for Xavier, they went out. That's
twenty one wins. That is an NCAA tournament conversation resume
and an opportunity to go to the Big East Tournament
and do some damage. So that's kind of where the
college basketball landscape lies as we sit here today. A

(01:27:01):
lot of work to be done. Outside of Kentucky Louisville.
Really no one is locked to make the NCAA Tournament,
but no one has shut the door on their season completely, meaning,
you know, outside UC Xavier, you still got a chance
to run the table. Here do some really good in
the regular season. A team like Dayton, a team like NKU,
you're already.

Speaker 2 (01:27:20):
In the motive.

Speaker 3 (01:27:21):
You have to win your conference tournament to get that
automatic berth because there's not an at large waiting for
you if you're Dayton, if you're NKU. So a lot
of stuff to continue to watch for if you're a
college basketball fan in the area. And again I think
that the fact that we're even having the conversation as

(01:27:42):
it pertains to the Cincinnati Bearcats is a good step forward.
And that conversation for the Xavier Musketeers stayed alive last
night with the fact that they were able to knock
off Providence. Do we have anything else Austin from a
college basketball standpoint that we need to lock into. I
feel like we've covered all of college basketball. Ohio State

(01:28:02):
last night, Oh what they do? They smoked Washington.

Speaker 2 (01:28:05):
They won again. Ohio State. Washington one of the worst
college basketball teams I've ever seen play. They were really bad.

Speaker 3 (01:28:13):
Okay, So for Ohio State, they're at eighty five percent
according to Neil Painn. For what it's worth, that is
a four and nine record against BPI Top fifty opponents.
Prime opportunity of waits. Though they got the Wolverines coming
to Columbus on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (01:28:31):
I'm told that I could get ugly in favor of
the Wolverines.

Speaker 3 (01:28:35):
Really, Okay, Uh, it just March is better if the
local teams are viable, right I I'm going to enjoy
March madness regardless. But I missed the days in which
you're locked in on selection Sunday, thinking about Okay, you
know you're in the tournament where you're going to be

(01:28:55):
heading and things like that. I just even if they,
even if you have the chance on sele election Sunday,
even if you're a bubble team right to have the
chance to hear your name called, there's still nothing like
it in my opinion, And that's I think what you
have to hope for right now locally, if you're one
of these teams, just play yourself into a decision on

(01:29:16):
selection Sunday. If not, then what do we turn to
the NFL off season key dates. Oh, it's a league year.
The NFL offseason never stops. And an example of that
is the fact that t Higgins just posted on its
all no cryptic, a little bit cryptic photos of of

(01:29:42):
tea working out and caption says five just out here
working And in the midst of the photos of him
working out is just a photo with some text that
says Priorities are rare, Options are everywhere. Oh now, if

(01:30:05):
you remember what's that mean, Joe said he is a priority. Yeah,
he's a want, not a need. Okay, so this is cryptic.

Speaker 2 (01:30:14):
Practicality are rare, Options are everywhere and it features a
song called New Blessings, So that's t Higgins.

Speaker 3 (01:30:25):
He also posted on on that on the last reel
as Kermit the Frog looking disheveled. Yeah, he says, I
feel like I'm already tired. Tomorrow's true.

Speaker 2 (01:30:34):
I get that man probably tired of wanting to know
what his future is going to be.

Speaker 3 (01:30:37):
And yeah, now our talk doctor today said heard that
something's eminent. They're going to announce something next week.

Speaker 2 (01:30:43):
He seems to have sources that say that contracts basically done,
so or callback sources. You never know.

Speaker 3 (01:30:52):
Is this one of the most unique free agent situations
that you can remember for a Cincinnati Bengal player.

Speaker 2 (01:30:57):
No, it happens like five times. Yeah, the course of
the Bengals. I feel like it has.

Speaker 3 (01:31:02):
But I feel like we've never been in a point
where you've had the type of player like Joe Burrow
go out.

Speaker 2 (01:31:05):
There and say this has to be done. Like, yeah,
I mean I always go about Burrow is the best
player in the history of the franchise not named Anthony Munios,
Like there's never been a more popular Bengal now.

Speaker 3 (01:31:14):
And I always go back to the sense that you know,
what is life like right now for us? Or what
are we talking about if Burrow never touches anything about
t Higgins? Because we we operated all year under the
assumption that what this is it for Tea and he's gone,
What is it like right now? If Joe never spoke up, we'd.

Speaker 2 (01:31:34):
Be talking about we'd be essentially having the same conversations
I think.

Speaker 3 (01:31:39):
About who they're gonna how they're gonna fill t Higgins role.
It'd be more about what can you justify keeping him
ass Yeah? I think also Burrow's comments have in a
way inflated Tea's value. Yeah, right, because like, did anybody
think he was a thirty million dollar receiver prior to

(01:32:01):
Probably not the last five weeks of the season, probably not. No,
And quite frankly, I still don't think he's a thirty
million dollar receiver. But when the best quarterback in the
NFL is repeatedly talking about how good the guy is,
it does nothing but drive the value up. I feel like,
did you view Joe's comments that we played yesterday from

(01:32:22):
pardon my take when he talked about, well, the Eagles
seemingly do it, they don't worry about the cap. Do
you view that as as another wake up call to
the organization that, like other teams do.

Speaker 2 (01:32:33):
This, I know it can be done. I think Joe
is just talking honestly, and I think that's a conversation
that a lot of NFL fans have, which is that
some teams make it seem like there is no sure
how did they do it?

Speaker 5 (01:32:45):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:32:45):
How can we not do it right? Because there are
other teams that you know, don't finesse the CAP. Well,
it's not just the Bengals. Then there are other teams
like Philadelphia, Kansas City, the that are just fantastic at it. Yeah,
So learning the CAP and how to be proficient in

(01:33:07):
CAP is something I think bros Is trying to figure out.
What I'd like to be.

Speaker 3 (01:33:13):
A little more understanding of is what's going on with
this latest flu what's going on with the sickness that
is engulfing so many I think Bob Manjing can help.
Bob Manjean from the University of Cincinnati and novacare joins

the Musketeers the Athletic Hall of Fame. They're going to
induct two former Xavier basketball players and I like to
talk about Jordan Crawford first.

Speaker 2 (01:33:52):
He was fun to watch Joe.

Speaker 21 (01:33:54):
He was probably the most talented score in Xavier's history,
had a tremendous year, led the Musketeers to the NCAA tournament.
Transferred from a Kentucky he was a special talent when
early went and played a long NBA career. As a
testament to that talent.

Speaker 5 (01:34:15):
He was a third team All American.

Speaker 26 (01:34:17):
What made his game so special he seemed to have
absolutely no limit on his range in terms of shooting
a three point shot and it could be a fad
away off of spin move.

Speaker 5 (01:34:25):
Absolutely Joe.

Speaker 21 (01:34:26):
He had unparalleled confidence and he had the talent to
back it up, and that's what made him.

Speaker 2 (01:34:32):
Such a special player.

Speaker 26 (01:34:34):
ESPN fifteen thirty Xavier fans, this is Joe Sunderman, voice

Talk to our friend Bob Manjean from the University of
Cincinnati and from Nova Care. He's joining us right now,
getting ready for a trip to ames Iowa with the
Bearcats as they take on Iowa State this weekend. But
nice enough for his time right now? What's up, Bob?

Speaker 27 (01:35:55):
Oh Tony doing well, just trying to keep up with
the pace that we're moving that right now, we're getting
ready to leave for Ames, Iowa tomorrow, play Iway State
at four o'clock Saturday, and jump right back on the
plane and gate here. So next Wednesday we go to
buy god West Virginia.

Speaker 2 (01:36:11):
Here we go.

Speaker 3 (01:36:12):
It's heating up for the Bearcats. It seems, Bob, like
everyone that I know or everyone that I talked to,
has either had the flu, currently has the flu, or
someone that they know has the flu and they're nervous
about getting it next.

Speaker 2 (01:36:28):
Am I crazy? Or is the flu just running rampant
right now?

Speaker 27 (01:36:33):
The flu is running rampant right now on campus. Especially
our docs all got notifications from campus student Health that
the flu right around campus is just on fire right now.
And it's running through athletics as well. Although I would
say in basketball we had our flu about quite We

(01:36:56):
have three four kids with the flu about four weeks ago,
go three weeks ago. And you know, again you've got
to be very careful the symptoms, letting it whether you're
going to let the kids continue to participate or shut
them down and you know, the symptoms are different, because
again there's so many different influenzas right now, Influenza A

(01:37:18):
seems to be the one that's affecting campus and our kids.
So just as soon as the symptoms hit, you just
need to get a hold of your doctor as you
can tell them. Just getting over it myself at this point,
share with the typical head congestion type things.

Speaker 13 (01:37:36):
It is.

Speaker 3 (01:37:37):
It's obviously something when when someone gets it, especially when
you're talking about a team. You're traveling together, you're practicing together,
you're you're eating together, you're in the training room together.
When you do have an outburst of the flu, how
do you go about trying to separate players knowing that

(01:37:57):
everything they do is together, How well, how do you
go about your best way and trying to keep it
from running through the whole team.

Speaker 27 (01:38:05):
Well, you know, again, whether it's high school, college, professional,
you know, you're putting high school kids on a bus
and it only takes one with the with the flu
and a cough to infect the other. You know, fourteen players,
you know, we take planes and buses, you know, every trip,
so you know, it's hard to keep it from spreading.

(01:38:26):
Things he can do like when we are at hotels now,
we all the kids.

Speaker 8 (01:38:30):
Have their own rooms.

Speaker 27 (01:38:32):
That way, you know, if they are sick, they're not
in that environment where they're in the same room with
the other kid, even though they're right on the bus together.
Mike Rafel and Dylan Freeze are nutritionous right now, where
he using so much vitamin sea zinc, magnesium supplements trying
to boost the immune systems. And then of course I

(01:38:53):
still recommend flu shots, and young kids don't like to
take blue shots. You know, it's just us over seventy
years that seem to get the flu shots. But you know,
again it's a good way of keeping it from spreading
because you may still get the flu potentially or a
different version of flu, but you may not be impacted,

(01:39:13):
you know as much. You know, I always get the
senior flu shot that covers a more wide variety, and
you know, when I do get sick, it's usually doesn't
you know, put me down too long. But the number
one thing I will not do generally is if they
have a fever, they're usually in the infectious space, and
I definitely isolate those kids that have fevers. So we

(01:39:38):
check the fevers constantly. We do our best to control
the fevers. You know, one of the players got all
the way up to one hundred and four degree fever
and we had to work with that to get that down.
But again, you're you're keeping an eye on the kids,
You're trying to use supplements, You're trying to use flu shots,
You're trying to make sure you isolate the kids because

(01:40:00):
once they start, the coffin and the sneeze and those
germs to spread through the air, and it's an airborne disease.
So you know, you really want to keep it. You
really want to try to control it the best you can.

Speaker 2 (01:40:13):
How are how are you deciding in a way.

Speaker 3 (01:40:16):
You know obviously that the flu doesn't care what part
of the season you're in for basketball, So what kind
of steps are you taking? What are you looking out
for to decide if a player is able to practice
or even if a player is able to play while
still sick, as opposed to when you may have to
keep somebody out and make that tough decision.

Speaker 27 (01:40:35):
Well, I mean again, if these not actively with a fever,
if they feel like they can make and manage their minutes,
we do some things to try to help them paviate
the symptoms so that you know, when they're on the floor,
they feel good enough and we hydrate the heck out
of them. So we're using Gator lights Pedia lights, So

(01:40:57):
I mean, if you don't have access to Gator lights
for example, or Gatorade Endurance, the kids, high school kids
can always go and get pediat which has a lot
of the same product in it that a Gator like does,
and it helps them maintain their potaestum levels, fault levels,
sodium levels, so that you want to sup that. You
can't just drink straight water because you're you're you need

(01:41:21):
the water, don't get me wrong, but you also need
to get some other, you know, products in your body
that you're losing while you're playing. You know, obviously if
the kids start cramping and you've been around it with
us with football, you know, then you at the collegiate level.

Speaker 5 (01:41:36):
Professional level, you know, you always have the opposite of using.

Speaker 27 (01:41:39):
Ivs with kids, Whereas at the high school level that's
a little hard. So you've got to really coaches at
the high school level, triggers at the high school level
really have to push the the fluids on the kids.

Speaker 3 (01:41:51):
Is there any substitute I know that there's a lot
of different things that you can help with. Is there
any substitute to just rest?

Speaker 5 (01:41:57):
You know?

Speaker 3 (01:41:57):
I know it with with my three kids. They've all
went through it, or they're going through it right now.
All they want to do is sleep. Is that the
best for just getting through it? The body just needing
as much rest as possible, which, again for college student athletes,
is very hard because you're you're going to class, you
have sports, you've got lifting, you've got study table, you've

(01:42:19):
got to get to meals. Is rest still the biggest
asset that.

Speaker 5 (01:42:23):
You can have.

Speaker 27 (01:42:25):
Well, give me an example is I have a team
that I cover that has a kid right now who's
got pretty significant influenza A. We tested him last Friday,
he came up positive. This particular team left town, so
I put him to bed for two days, check them
every day for fevers, make sure we have that control.

(01:42:47):
And here we are Thursday of the next week, almost
a week out since he started, and Tuesday I started
him back on the treadmill to walk in a general
bandit program. So rest is cool eight, but when you
come back, you have to take the time and come back.
You can't just you know, hey, I started doing this,

(01:43:07):
or I stopped doing this on this day. I've been
out for a week. Oh I'm going to just jump
right back in at the level I was. No, we
need to kind of slowly type trade it back up.
So I think too many people try to jump back
into activities a little too fast, especially if they don't
have especially if they don't have enough support system, meaning

(01:43:29):
you know, a trainer to help them out, athletic trainers.
They are professional flu advisors, okay, because we see so
much flu at the high school, college and professional levels
that we deal with it all day long. You know,
that's just the way it is. So we're trying to
prevent it. We're trying to use supplements, we're trying to,
you know, make sure the kids wash their clothes, wash

(01:43:53):
their hands. The basics don't change. And how many kids,
how many times do you think your little kids, I
know they're still really young, but you know they never
think about, oh, I'm going to go wash my hands.
That's for my dad's job. Mom and dad. Let's let's
get them over the sink and continually wash their hands
because they're rubbing their nose and they're coppering on their hands.
And then they're touching each other. So I mean, at

(01:44:14):
the age of your kids, it's inevitable that they're all
going to get it once one gets it. And that's
whether they're in daycare, whether they're in school or whatever.
So parents really have to stay on top of it.
And I make I make the kids strip their beds,
wash their clothes, make sure they gets done, so that
they're constantly making sure they're cleaning up. Because you know

(01:44:37):
you went to college. How many times do you actually
wash the dishes in your sink where you just leave
them power up for like four weeks? Okay, I mean
I knew the way you lived you were a slob,
so I mean you probably had dishes. You probably had
dishes in your bed, dishes in your bathroom, dishes everywhere.

Speaker 2 (01:44:53):
Well, I was watching so much film, Bob, I didn't
have time to do anything else.

Speaker 27 (01:44:57):
Exactly exactly, it's all about the film Baby for all
about the films.

Speaker 3 (01:45:02):
For parents with younger kids or maybe even high school,
are you are you just airing on the side of
caution on making sure they are symptom free, making sure
they're back to health before trying to push them back
into sports or trying to push them back into school
at this point.

Speaker 27 (01:45:17):
Well, I mean symptom free is kind of a broad word.
I mean, at our level, our number one thing is
is the fever. As long as the fever is controlled,
as long as they can you know, we used like
various nose sprays to clear up or open up their
sinuses so they can breathe when you're practicing. So yes,

(01:45:37):
you can get them back when they still have some
delayed symptoms. Okay, it doesn't have to be completely symptom free,
as long as they're not in that feverish acute phase
because some of these flu I mean, one of our players,
you know, continue to have some cough and mucus drainings
for upwards of three weeks, so you know, we have

(01:46:00):
to basically just control those symptoms so that he can
get back into participating.

Speaker 3 (01:46:06):
When you mentioned symptoms, and I guess I'm seeing it
at a different light now because my kids are so
young and all three have now gone through it, it
feels like all three, yes they've had a fever, but
all three have been much different symptoms. Is this a
normal type of strand or is this unique this year?
There seems to be so many different symptoms under the

(01:46:27):
same category of the flu, right, I.

Speaker 27 (01:46:30):
Think you can have a sore throat, you can have
a swollen throat, you can have all sinus congestion where
you have that compression behind your eyes because your sinuses
are so swollen. You can have a persistent cough. You've
got stomach flus, and you've got kids who had settled
in their gi track. And we had one player throwing

(01:46:52):
up in the middle of the game about two games ago,
so that you know, again he didn't get the flu
that was more predominant with you know, head congestion has
kind of settled more in the stomach and we were
able to control that and so he continued to play.
So again, you want to make sure the symptoms are

(01:47:13):
not interfering with your ability to, you know, to participate
in a You want to get your family doc involved
to make sure what flu you're dealing with. You want
to make sure that you're hydrating right. You want to
make sure that you know there are products on the market,
such as a product called tamiflu. Then if you have

(01:47:33):
a flu, you take a tab for one tab for
ten days and it actually helps paviate the symptoms. So
there are things you can take to help pilot all
the motors, but those all should be taken in the
direction of your family doctor, your primary care doctor, so
that you know, especially your children's age, you know your

(01:47:56):
pe person should be involved, make sure what flu they have,
the symptoms they have, and then try to control those symptoms.
But the biggest fear is always the fever. Yeah, you
know when you have kids your age, they have one
hundred and three, one hundred and forty three receiver, one
hundred five and receiver. You know, my kids went through
that and we would try, you know, the ice bass,

(01:48:17):
the alcohol wipe downs the tail and alls the ib profens,
so that you control that fever because fevers are fevers
are dangerous, and when your children get a fever, you
want to be on top of that.

Speaker 3 (01:48:32):
Lastly, on let's say something of tama flu or or
you're taking something to aid and beating over the floor.
Are you taking that until you are feeling better? Are
you taking that to run its course? How long are
you staying on again something that maybe your doctor recommends
to beat the flu completely so that it doesn't come

(01:48:52):
back or or rear it's head again.

Speaker 27 (01:48:56):
Well, a lot of the flues run their course between
three and seven days. So the tama flues are designed
to be either one pill a day for ten days,
which is generally once you're through the acute symptoms. And
some physicians I know will go tama flu b I
d you know, two tabs a day, depending on the

(01:49:17):
severity of your symptoms at the time of year you're in.
That's why it's critical that you talk to your you know,
pediatrician or your family doctor, get them involved. And again,
some docs are sports oriented, just like sports you know,
athletic trainers are sports oriented. Phys therapists is sports oriented.
There are physicians out there that are sports oriented that

(01:49:39):
you know know some little tricks to keep you know,
keep trying to participate while you're working your way through
the symptoms. Uh. And but again, tama flu is a
pretty good product that that's helped our kids. All of
our dots here, all of our primary docs use the
caama flu.

Speaker 3 (01:49:56):
Bob, I always appreciate your time, appreciate your insights, and
I know the flu is affecting a ton today. So
this has been awesome. Thanks for your time, enjoy the
trip to Iowa, and would not be mad at you
if you came.

Speaker 2 (01:50:07):
Back with a win.

Speaker 27 (01:50:09):
Well, I'm hoping we come back with that win. And
I think right now our kids are playing pretty well
offensively finally in and I think Wes has done a
fantastic job with you know, judging all the balls in
the air to make sure, you know, get ready to play.
And I'm anxious to go to Iowas Payton. I think
they're number seven in the country and it'll be interesting

(01:50:31):
to see, you know, how we do away from home again, certainly.

Speaker 3 (01:50:34):
A good chance to get a barometer on where this
team is. Bob, thanks for the time. We'll talk again
next week.

Speaker 2 (01:50:41):
That is thank you.

ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 1 (01:51:12):
Now your chance to win up on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 3 (01:51:40):
Welcome back, since he three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station thanks to Penn Station. Thanks to Bob Manjean
getting us cut up on all things with the flu
that's going around. We've covered college hoops, We've covered the
National Football League obviously in that we cover the Cincinnati Bengals.
We have not yet spent much time on the Cincinnati

(01:52:03):
Reds except the news yesterday on Rhet Louder and on
Spencer Steer. A waiting kind of follow up for that,
but we do have, I believe some audio Austin taken
from the Hot Stove League for the Cincinnati Reds with
Brad Metter talking to a couple of different things.

Speaker 2 (01:52:22):
That's true. Brad joined Tommy and Jim last night Tommy
Thrall and Jim Day on the Reds Hot Stove League.
Three different cuts. Let's start with the news on Rhet
Louder from Brad Metter.

Speaker 11 (01:52:37):
How delayed is he right now? And what specifically is
is it just elbow discomfort or what is it? He
had some forearm titaness back in January. We sent him
to Cincinnati. He saw the doctors. They slowed him down
and got him on a program and some meds or whatever.
He's ready to go. He's throwing.

Speaker 28 (01:52:55):
We'll see how delayed he is once he gets back
on the mountain and DJ mapps it out for him.
I can't tell you right now, but he is going
to be slow getting getting going, and we'll just have
to see.

Speaker 29 (01:53:04):
And when you talk about Louder, I mean we're talking
about a young kid. You're not expecting him to make
or I shouldn't say expecting. You're not needing him to
make thirty starts this year. So you've got you're going
to take handle him with kid gloves right Well, we're
certainly not going to push him out of the gates. Yeah,
I mean, he's a young guy who we're going to
plan on being here for a while. So yeah, we're
we're not going to push him right now. Okay, So

(01:53:28):
I think the key aspect in that is not pushing
Rhet Louder. If if there is one thing that we
have spent time Austin talking about with this Cincinnati Reds team,
it does appear that there is depth in the starting rotation,
at least depth that we're sitting here and we're wondering, Okay, what.

Speaker 3 (01:53:51):
What is the rotation going to look like? We've had
the conversation of Okay, maybe is there a six man
rotation at times? If there is a role that could
be helped or that you could slowly bring someone around to.
I think starting pitcher would be that, right. Brady Singer
was at it, Andrew Abbott is here, Nick Lodolo, Nick Martinez,
Hunter Green. We've talked about the young talent on this

(01:54:13):
team as well. I'm not saying you want to run
the risk of not having Rhet Lauder this year, but
it does seem like an area that you can afford
to slow play this and make sure that rehdt Lauder's
good to go at least you would hope based on
how other.

Speaker 2 (01:54:27):
Things pan out over the course of spring training. What
are the other two hits we have? Well, speaking of
starting rotation, the topic of a potential sixth a six
man rotation was brought up to MANA.

Speaker 11 (01:54:41):
Is baseball trending more in that direction or do you
think it's trending in a direction where maybe you can
get a little bit more mileage out of your starters
with them pitching is pitching more as opposed to throwing
more pitching meaning a little less strained on the body.

Speaker 28 (01:55:00):
Not everything's max ephyort. Yeah, no, I know there's a
lot of talk about it. I can tell you what
we're focused on is getting more out of our starting pitchers.
And with the limit of thirteen pitchers on the roster,
it makes it really difficult to go to six man
rotation because you're gonna come up in the pin short
if you only have seven relievers. As soon as you
have a short start, you're going to be optioning more

(01:55:23):
guys and making more moves to try to recover. And
I think that causes a bigger problem than just the
five man rotation. So I get it, and I understand why.
I mean, we saw in the World Series. I show
they're bullpen games. It's hard to have enough starting pitching,
and they say it all the time, you can't have enough,
and it's across baseball, but I think it's really with
the limit.

Speaker 2 (01:55:43):
I think it's really hard to go to a six
man rotation.

Speaker 3 (01:55:45):
All right, So good to know, and I think the
talk and the six man rotation, Austin also goes a
little bit in depth of the bullpen and the arms
you have. That would be the gram Ashcraft argument, because
he's right. If you look at playoff baseball, what is
one constant that we are always left talking about in
the playoffs, or at least always watching guys that come

(01:56:07):
out of the bullpen are shut down guys very rarely
when you get deep into the playoffs. Are you running
guys out of the bullpen that got five rays on
the season? Every guy that comes out it's man two
three one. The eras are so low and you can
turn to the bullpen with confidence. Too many times in

(01:56:29):
recent years, and I know you tweet about this often, Austin.
Too many times in recent years the Reds turned to
the bullpen, it becomes a disaster. First batter is walked,
runners on base, immediate pressure, and that pressure puts pressure
on the starters to go deeper. It puts pressure on
the managers, it puts pressure on the offense. It's just
not a good outcome for the team if your relief

(01:56:51):
pitching can't get it done. What's the final audio clip
we have this was about how they would grade their offseason.
Do they stick to the plan and continuing to add
players as spring training goes along.

Speaker 11 (01:57:03):
What kinds of moves were you really trying to do
and do you feel like you guys executed the plan
of the off season pretty effectively.

Speaker 28 (01:57:11):
Yeah, Well, look, we go into every off season and
specifically this one, and you're trying to add the best
players you can to maximize your team, and you have
a budget, and so to your point, for us our superstars,
and hopefully we do have them, they're always going to

(01:57:32):
come most always going to come from within, and we're
gonna have to draft them and we're gonna have to
develop them, and we have to do a good job there.
And that's the plan Nick laid out, you know, however,
many years ago, five or six years ago, and that's
what we're trying to do.

Speaker 5 (01:57:45):
So you're right.

Speaker 28 (01:57:46):
I hope it is Ellie. I hope it is McClean,
I hope it is Green, I hope it's Lodola. Those
guys need to be those kind of guys for us
to get where we want to go.

Speaker 29 (01:57:53):
With that in mind, there are still some players that
are unsigned out there. I know you guys are looking
at the market every day and trying to improve this club.
I'd be interested to get your take on this, because
Tito was asked today about guys adding hitters, adding offense
to camp and his answer was, I really don't want

(01:58:14):
to muddy the waters too much with too many guys,
and I knew what he meant.

Speaker 2 (01:58:19):
What's your take on that.

Speaker 28 (01:58:21):
We talked about it, and if you if you look
in the in the clubhouse like you did today, the
lockers aren't all full. We don't have as many guys
in the camp as we've had in the past, and
that's by design. We do feel like we have a
good competition, specifically in our bullpen. You know, we have
players fill in all our spots and some of these

(01:58:43):
guys there is there's healthy competition. We don't know what
our outfield's going to look like. We don't know what
our bullpen is going to look like the last couple
of spots, So you know, I think we're in a
good spot. I think we like who we have in camp,
and I think Tito wants to keep it.

Speaker 5 (01:58:57):
I know he does.

Speaker 2 (01:58:57):
We've talked about, Yeah, muddy the water.

Speaker 5 (01:59:01):
I like that term.

Speaker 3 (01:59:02):
It's interesting muddy the water from Tito Francona, not all
from Brad Metter on the Hot Stove League with Tommy
Thrall and Jim Day A little Cincinnati Reds for what
it's worth. Austin David Schoenfield of a ESPN dot Com
was tasked in making AL and NL roster predictions for
the All Star Game.

Speaker 2 (01:59:21):
Already, how you about that? You ready for this? In
the National League?

Speaker 3 (01:59:26):
He has three Cincinnati Reds as options going into the season.
Can you guess the three.

Speaker 2 (01:59:32):
Under Green, Elli Day, La Cruz, Matt McLean There it
is okay, Hunter Green as a starting pitcher. That was
a pretty tough assignment for Schoenfeld.

Speaker 3 (01:59:40):
Ellie de la Cruz, he's got as the starting shortstop
in the All Star Game over Mookie Betts, over Francisco Lindor.
And he does have Matt McClain as a backup to
right now Catell Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks. If and
I know it's a big if, if Matt McClain and
Ellie de la Cruz are playing in the All Star

(02:00:02):
Game at shortstop and second base, and Hunter Green has
had the first half of the season that designates him
as an All Star. Is this team in contention for
the playoffs?

Speaker 5 (02:00:11):
I have no idea.

Speaker 2 (02:00:14):
It's it's so much more than those three. It starts because, well,
all offseason we've had the conversation based off of, Yeah,
Ellie and Matt McClay are going to be back, and
Hunter Green's going to be in the conversation. But you
don't know what the infield's gonna look like, and you
don't know what the outfield's gonna look like. You don't
know if so and so is gonna stay healthy, and

(02:00:35):
the bullpen's a big question mark baseball. It is so
much more. It's so much, It's about so much more
than two or three good players. I mean, hell, last
time the Reds had three All Stars, it was Scooter,
Jeannette au haaneos Warez and Joey Vado. Was that team
in contention? No, No, But I think.

Speaker 3 (02:00:55):
In my thing, if Ellie's a starter, that means he's
taken a substantial step forward. But more importantly than that,
if Matt McClain's an All Star, that tells me he's
come back in a really good way after missing the
whole year last year. I think that's as if not
more important, than anything else for this roster because they're
banking on Matt McClain being really, really good. Let's take

(02:01:16):
one more break, Let's come back. Let's set the stage
for quick hits with Moeger and the Moegar Show coming
up next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, a
service of Penn Station. Welcome back since he three sixty

(02:01:39):
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, thanks to our friends
at Penn Station. You know a player that I keep
seeing austin in a position of need as a riser
in the early stages of like the draft and evaluating
players is Cincinnati guard Luke Candra. I've seen, I saw
Moegar retweeted something. I've seen Luke Candra's name as a

(02:02:00):
early day three guy a lot this week, and this
is kind of the time where scouts and those that
follow the game really start to dive in on prospects.
I think Luke Kandra is a guy that should be
highlighted as a potential fit for the Cincinnati Bengals. Very
low pressure rate given up, doesn't commit penalties, keeps the
quarterback up right, and plays a position of need for

(02:02:22):
the Cincinnati Bengals and isn't going to require a Day
one or Day two draft pick.

Speaker 2 (02:02:25):
What is the best way to describe the Bearcats offensive
line scheme slash run game scheme? They were like, what
is the scheme that he played in? I would consider
them pro style, you know. They they did rely on
the run at times. They were very proficient in the

(02:02:45):
run game and every year that he started, obviously he
transferred back to Cincinnati. He's an elder high school guy.
But if you look at Brendan Soaresby, you look at
Joe Royer, who set records and receptions this year for
Bengal or Bearcat tight ends, and the way they used
Xavier Henderson, they want to air it out.

Speaker 3 (02:03:03):
I don't think that. I don't think the personnel allowed
that as much this year. But I think Luke Candra
can fit into a system where he is protecting the
quarterback and keeping him up right. He's a bulldog type
of mentality when it comes to the running game, but
his past protection was phenomenal all season for the Cincinnati
Bearcats and kept Brendan Sooresby upright from his guard spot.

(02:03:25):
An interesting name to keep an eye on from an
NFL standpoint. A lot of interesting things are going to
come about now this off season. The offseason, as we've mentioned,
it's already starting. February eighteenth is the first day to
designate franchise tag and transition tags. The soouting combine is

(02:03:45):
at the end of February. March fourth is that franchise
tag deadline. The tenth through the twelfth of March is
the negotiated period negotiating period for unrestricted free agents, and
then on the twelfth those deals can be signed, aids
or official cuts are designated. The league meeting is at
the end of March. April eighteenth is deadline for restricted

(02:04:09):
free agents, and so the year is essentially already begun
in the NFL. In those league meetings, though, I think
there's a couple different unique things to look at Austin.
One the question of will the NFL expand replay assistance.
Do you think we're at the point with the officiating

(02:04:31):
this year in the NFL league wide that replay assists
needs to be expanded.

Speaker 2 (02:04:37):
Yeah, I think we'll see a lot more of the
quote un you know that. I guess they officially call
it replay assist.

Speaker 3 (02:04:43):
They've talked about the sky Judge, which would be an
eighth official, which.

Speaker 2 (02:04:46):
No, that's basically what replay assist is is a sky
judge where they just say, hey, no, you guys miss that,
move the ball up to whatever. So I think that
needs to happen more frequently on face masks, especially that
that hurt several teams this year, including the Bengals past
interference I think is interesting. I wonder, like the depths,

(02:05:07):
they'll go with it early, but with officiating continually being
at the forefront of what people complain about, yeah, needs
to be expanded, and you they have already said they're
going to talk about it.

Speaker 3 (02:05:20):
Usually player safety is a big conversation point. But they
did a good job at least from a concussion standpoint. Now,
what's interesting, Austin is that NFL officials did not throw
a single flag during the twenty twenty four season for
violations of the new hip drop tackle. There were a
lot of instances of it, but they did not throw
a flag for that. I found that interesting. Maybe that's

(02:05:42):
something as well that technology can help with. That to
me is ridiculous crazy. There's multiple times, yeah, where it
was clear and obvious hip drop. They've talked about, I
make it a rule if you're not gonna enforce it. Yeah,
they've talked about the technology to measure first downs would

(02:06:02):
do away with the chain gang. We've talked about the timetable.
I think we're going to see that.

Speaker 2 (02:06:06):
I don't either.

Speaker 3 (02:06:07):
They talk about the possibility the timetable for the eighteen
game season when that would would begin to set in.
How about the kickoff rules. Do you think we see
the kickoff rules remain the same or do you think
they're adjusted again?

Speaker 2 (02:06:19):
They'll stay the same.

Speaker 3 (02:06:22):
I could see that again. There was another question, will
the NFL establish a flag football league? You think that's
something that gains any popularity, and they kind of already do.
I'm not sure what you mean. It says after years
of promoting flag football as a league adjacent pursuit, starting
a campaign to make girls varsity sport and off fifty states,
the NFL peers ready to get into the business of

(02:06:44):
flag football ahead of its twenty twenty eight Olympic debut.
Maybe just on a more official, official title.

Speaker 2 (02:06:49):
Maybe. I mean they're already very much involved in flag football. Yeah,
like that's a very common thing. It would seem like
the next I watched I watched a flag football tournament
on NFL Network this day in Canton. Yeah, so, I
mean they invest a lot of money into that. So
maybe if I guess they're considering like a professional league, Yeah,
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (02:07:08):
I don't know about that, all right, something to look

Oh man, I would assume at some point today he
has talked.

Speaker 5 (02:11:13):
I just don't know.

Speaker 2 (02:11:14):
Has he talked into a microphone? Has been? Okay? We
could use him talk for sure.

Speaker 11 (02:11:19):
I want to send Joe Burrow a Valentine's Day gift
for the two and a half months of content.

Speaker 2 (02:11:24):
But we didn't think we were going to be getting
thank you.

Speaker 11 (02:11:26):
I mean legitimately, this has been this has been awesome,
This has been uh this has been a major difference
in my life.

Speaker 2 (02:11:33):
So we're going to talk more about Joe Burrow today.
All right, Dare you to try to go to his
house and deliver his Valentine's Day gift? I'm not going
to do this.

Speaker 11 (02:11:42):
I'm most definitely not not going to do that. Let
him know you're a finalist, though he might invite any delivery.

Speaker 14 (02:11:51):
Uh So.

Speaker 11 (02:11:53):
Remember back in twenty twenty, which of course you guys do.
The run up to the draft, they're going to ruin Burrow.
Bro is Cincinnati where quarterbacks go to die? Are they
gonna waste them? Should he pull an Eli? They weren't
talking about the first five years, then we're really talking
about the next three, were there? So we are gonna
spend some time on that. We are going to keep

(02:12:14):
milking this Joe Burrow thing perfect as long as we can.
I want to know, will a Cincinnati read ever do
what Joe Burrow is doing?

Speaker 5 (02:12:23):
Good?

Speaker 11 (02:12:23):
Question, he kind of did, and they traded him to
Kansas City. Correct, So will a player of somewhat equal stature. Ever,
due to the Reds with Joe Burrow is doing to
the Bengals. We are going to spend some time on that,
our buddy Chad Breundle, on a whole bunch of different
bear Cat topics. We'll talk about last night Xavier win
over Providence. Let me run yeah on Peacock. Maddox Man

(02:12:47):
Dante Maddox came off the bench and changed the energy
of that game on Peacock last night. A lot of
people want the NCAA tournament to be expanded here in Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (02:12:58):
Take it this year.

Speaker 11 (02:12:58):
There are two cases again that we're going to talk about,
the Ret Louder injury with one of the experts from
Ortho Cincy, and so much more.

Speaker 2 (02:13:05):
Wow, would you be interested?

Speaker 3 (02:13:07):
Mel Sports Illustrated's Connor orr Yeah suggested that the New
York Giants, with extra picks in the fourth round, take
a fourth round pick, send it to Cincinnati, and return
for Jake Browning in a year. Nope, where there are
so many holes to fill now, would after an extra
draft pick mean anything?

Speaker 2 (02:13:27):
No. I like what I have at backup quarterback. I
will pay. I like a good insurance policy. I'm good there.

Speaker 11 (02:13:34):
I can put Jake Browning in the game and know
he is going to run the offense effectively. He's not
going to be Joe Burrow, and you're not gonna win
a championship if like Jake Browning had to take over
as the starting quarterback week four, right, But I like
having that insurance policy. I am not taking that for granted.
That is worth more than a fourth round pick, and
it might sound kind of unfair to Jaka. Look, at

(02:13:56):
some point, the guy wants a chance to be a
starting QB. Joe Burrow got through last season healthy. Guess
what chances are it won't happen again next year. Just
the year to year odds of that happening change. So no,
you're gonna have to give me a lot more. I
know a fourth round pick is not that's not bad compensation.
I like really good insurance policies, man, and Jake Browning

(02:14:17):
is one. I know I can put him in the game,
especially with the weapons they have and should keep, and
feel like I can still win football games with them.

Speaker 2 (02:14:25):
I'm not giving that up.

Speaker 3 (02:14:26):
The Trey Hendrickson situation, I know you talked about it
with with Paul Danner Junior this week. Bill Barnwell did
a piece today on ESPN dot Com about Miles Garrett
and really labeled seven teams that should be in on
Miles Garrett. If you're the Bengals, you slow play this,
wait for the teams that don't land Miles Garrett, and
then flow Trey Hendrickson out there. Yeah, is that the

(02:14:47):
most viable move for Trey Hendrickson?

Speaker 2 (02:14:51):
I guess.

Speaker 3 (02:14:51):
So everything about the Bengals offseason has been you gotta
get this done quick. You gotta get that done quick.
I feel like Trey Hendrickson and the situation is one
you kind of sit down, I can wait for well.

Speaker 11 (02:15:01):
I mean, if you're trying to recuperate draft capital, you
know you're gonna do that before the draft.

Speaker 2 (02:15:06):
I guess.

Speaker 11 (02:15:07):
Let me let me ask answer your question by asking
a question. Is it the worst thing in the world
if you just make him play this year? No, like,
because Trey doesn't want that option. I think we've kind
of made it sound like that's not an option. He's
under contract next year.

Speaker 5 (02:15:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (02:15:27):
The Bengals have had no issue with other players telling them, Hey,
you're gonna hit free agency at the end of this year,
but we're not gonna hit you up with a contract extension.
So hey, good luck if if that happens with Trey,
is that Okay, it might It might cost them a
little bit in the short term in terms of noise.
Trey's gonna show up and play the first game. So
are we totally taking that off the table. If the

(02:15:49):
answer is yes, then I'm trading them, yeah, because I'm
not that interested in paying in twenty twenty seven for
the player he was in twenty twenty four. So all right,
let's flip them, spend them, and see what we can
get for him. It has been pointed out that you
have to go back aways to find the last time
a guy his age.

Speaker 2 (02:16:08):
Was traded for a first rounder.

Speaker 11 (02:16:10):
But yeah, sure, I'm gonna try to figure out, Okay,
who made a play for Miles Garrett or maybe who's
willing to overpay for Miles Garrett and then offer them
a slightly cheaper alternative deal.

Speaker 3 (02:16:20):
It's so unique because the defense was so bad. Normally,
if you've got a guy that leads the league in sacks,
you figure, okay, you got guys on the defense that
are good pieces. Jermaine Pratt wants out, you got the
Trey Hendrickson. There are so many holes on the defense.
It becomes. Is six draft picks enough to fill those holes?
If not, can you rely on their free agency barometer

(02:16:41):
to successfully do that.

Speaker 11 (02:16:42):
I understand the thinking behind all three options, like I understand, Hey,
he's really good. We want to keep him here, so
we're going to pay him again, Like really good organizations,
I think, for the most part, aren't paying you for
past production. But if you believe he could still be
a really effective player, and you're okay, okay, like you're
keeping Trey Hendrickson, that's fine. There's a validity to that.

(02:17:05):
I think there's also validity to let him play out
the year, see what happens. He's extra motivated. I don't
think he's going to miss games, and then see what
happens at the end of free agency. And I think
there's also validity to the idea that the best way
to rebuild your defense is by doing it via the draft,
and the best way to do that in the draft
is to have as many draft choices as possible. And

(02:17:25):
you're selling high on him, I wonder, And granted he
did talk last week. You and I started talking about
this in December, but I think we started talking about it.
I'll speak for myself because of the trade request last April. Right,
how much of this is a front and center thing
if he didn't do that, zero, probably, you know, right,
But he represents the most interesting dynamic because I admit

(02:17:47):
that I go back and forth on this.

Speaker 2 (02:17:49):
Yeah, I feel like I go back and forth on
everything right now?

Speaker 11 (02:17:53):
Yes, yes, exactly. Which I read Danner's mailbag on The
Athletic today and he'd he puts something in print that
I think you and I, all the all three of
us have talked about. This Jamar Chase thing is gonna
take a while. Yeah, that's my fear, you know. I
think there was this thought during the season that like, well,
the off season will start and they'll just pick up
where they left off.

Speaker 27 (02:18:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:18:14):
I think this is gonna be a drawn out, protracted thing.

Speaker 3 (02:18:16):
And I don't think it's going to be very friendly
from Jamar Chase. Very simply put five and two over
the next seven are the bar got ten?

Speaker 5 (02:18:23):
Ten?

Speaker 3 (02:18:24):
And ten's a number? Oh yeah, okay, there is not
all I needed that. After Neil Payne let me.

Speaker 2 (02:18:27):
Down, Neil Payne totally changed his he cash in.

Speaker 3 (02:18:31):
He got on the show last Friday, and I think
he realized, like, oh man, they're bringing up some good points.
We need to lower this. It's lowered substantial. So it
was sixty eight percent, yeah before they won three games. Yeah,
now it's twenty seven to twenty seven percent. Are you
guys going to get him back on?

Speaker 2 (02:18:46):
No, he's dead to us. We're done.
