Of course, your talkbacks, and a couple other things we'll

here I messed up before the show got in here today, Austin.
We've had a lot going on. We're preparing for a show,
and like forty minutes ago, I'm like, man, I'm starving,
but there there wasn't anything downstairs of our building that

(03:28):
I really wanted today. So I'm like, you know what,
this calls for Skyline, but I don't have the time
to go to Skyline. So I'm gonna door dash Skyline
to the office order the Skyline And at about eleven five,
I get the notification that the dasher is arriving. Here
we go, baby walked out into the lobby. I'm waiting

(03:49):
get the update. Your order has been delivered. I click
on the picture got delivered to my home. No worse
feeling in the world than on the edge of your
seat waiting to bite into some Skyline chili and a
red cream soda and seeing that it's at the house,
and now knowing that my wife and kids were able
to enjoy it, and I'm still stuck here starving. Terrible,

(04:13):
terrible miss for me today. Last night at the Knicks
Lakers game, Lebron James confronted Stephen A. Smith and essentially said,
keep my son's name out your mouth.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
What do you make of this stupid by Lebron James.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yeah, Lebron has tweeted before about how you know Lebron
or Bronni belongs in the league. Twenty twenty three, Lebron
tweeted out that man, Bronni can compete against a lot
of these guys in the NBA, they're not very good.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
And then Steven A.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Smith, who went on his show today and said, look,
I'm I'm about the facts, and I know that that
Lebron came to me not as a teammate but as
a dad last night. I can respect that. But the
facts are the facts. He's not very good. He doesn't
belong in the NBA. That's a bad look for Lebron.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
It is because Lebron has been the guy who created
all of this nonsense from the very beginning, has talked
about Bronni and you know, he's the only reason Bronni
is even in the NBA. And I get it. You
can want to defend your son, but listen, you're a
world famous athlete, that's a billionaire. You don't make You
don't play by the same rules as everybody else. You
don't get to play by those rules. And when you

(05:23):
have gained the system. To give your son an advantage,
you have to be open to criticism. And Lebron is
a narcissist. He's a self centered individual, great player, but
stuff like this, he is so incredibly tone deaf. It's unbelievable.
He's been in the spotlight for twenty years, he made
a lot of money, he's got a lot of good relationships,
and he still can't figure out the basics of perception

(05:47):
and the right thing to do in moments like this.
It's very, very annoying for stephen A for standing in
business correct Also job ain't there to protect your feelings? Is?
You know? I often disagree with stephen A, but he
is at least honest in what he thinks.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Sad thing is about all of this is that the
the Lebron and Jordan comparison in the face of the
league and now the brownie think it's taken away that
the Lakers are playing really good. They've won eight in
a row, they're second in the West. Just play basketball,
Just enjoy. You got your son on the team, You're
playing at a really high level. You just got Luca,
you made a huge splash. Keep winning. Instead, you're worrying

(06:26):
about what steven A is in the crowd, and he's
saying about Bronnio.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Mostly true.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
Not not a good day, not a good week, Austin.
For Ryan Wedding. And if you're thinking, where do I
know the name Ryan Wedding?

Speaker 3 (06:40):
You hear that name? Well, you got it right.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
If you think back to the two thousand and two Olympics,
he finished twenty fourth in the parallel giant slalom.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
That's where you know him from.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
Okay, now you know him as one of the ten
most wanted men on the FBI list. There is a
ten million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest
of former Olympics snowboarder for Canada, Ryan Wedding.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, you know what.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
He's wanted for multinational drug trafficking and orchestrating multiple murders
related to the drug RNK. Good lord, now that's heavy stuff.
Listen to this, Austin. This from Akiel Davis, who is
the assistant director of the FBI in their Los Angeles
field office.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
How about this quote.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
Wedding went from shredding powder on the slopes to distributing
powder on the streets of US cities and have Native Canada.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
That's a bar.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
The allegend murders of his competitors make wedding a very
dangerous man. Be on the lookout. That's ten million dollars
if you can find any information into the arrest of
Ryan wedding bar.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
That's a bar right there.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
Powder on the slopes to distributing powder on the streets.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
It's almost as much of a bar as the one
that Kendrick Perkins dropped. So this is fascinating. Inside the NBA.
On TNT, Charles Barkley went on this monologue about how
bad ESPN is and they're in his next and called
them idiots in fools and primarily was talking about Kendrick Perkins.

(08:09):
So Kendrick Perkins responded and saying, you might want to
tell that senior citizen, Charles Barkley that I'll be around
when he see an idiot or fool in person. Make
sure he keep that same energy. He can come playing
with me if he want to, and I'm gonna address
his ass like the numbers on a house. Wow, that's

(08:30):
a bar. A bank from the four h nine Home
Boy and we bar none and fade all hashtag Texas
boy man. The first person replies and says, is this
a physical threat? Kendrick says, no, it's a promise. Wow Wow,
I love media beef. First it was rap sheeting Jordan Schultz.

(08:53):
Now it's Perk yeah, and uh good Man Perkins chuck.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
The crazy thing about it, steven A and Lebron The
crazy thing about it is that that's his employer. Next year,
he went at ESPN as a whole. He won at Kendrick,
Perkins and Barkley's main comment was I'm so tired of
hearing about the Warriors and the Lakers, and yet no

(09:19):
one covers the Cavs, who have already clinched a playoff spot.
No one's covering Oklahoma City, who's miles ahead in the
West and has the MVP front runner. Where is the
coverage for them? Is essentially what Charles was getting to.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yep, and primarily a comment that was made by Perkins
that said the Lakers saved the NBA this year with
the Luca trade because they've played good for two weeks following. Now,
I will say the Luca trade did put eyeballs on
the NBA, Yeah, and you know, kind of reminded people
of what's going on. But the Lakers didn't save the
NBA this year. Yeah, if you've been paying any sort

(09:53):
of attention, there's a lot of good basketball, including forty
four points from Kobe White last night in a victory
for the Bulls the Orlando Magic. The Bulls increase their game,
their lead in the final play in tournament spot to
four games.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
Man, I'm glad that we were able to find a
way to work that in to the start here of
since he three to sixty. That's not the only news
obviously going around. As I mentioned Hunter Greens, your opening
day starter Tanner Hudson is back. He's back for the
Cincinnati Bengals on a one year deal. There's also other

(10:28):
things going around in the NFL. DK Metcalf is made
available right now by the Seattle Seahawks. They have said
that quote many teams have inquired about DK Metcalf. Christian
Kirk is a member of the Houston Texans.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Now. Speaking of the Houston Texans, just came out they
are releasing veteran guard Shaq Mason started thirty two games
for Houston over the past two seasons, one hundred and
forty seven games he has started in his ten year career.
A new free agent guard now potentially available in the Bengals.

(11:01):
As we know, our free agent guard Needy Mason last
year for Houston graded out at a sixty two point
three okay for Houston. That included a sixty five point
two pass block grade and a fifty seven point seven
run block grade according to Pro Football Focus.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
It is other NFL news the Jaguars cut Evan Ingram,
two time Pro Bowl tight end shocker.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
James Rapine was like, sign Evan Ingram, Sign Evan Ingram.
You don't need Evan Ingram because we got Tanner Hudson.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
What about what about Jonathan Allen got released? Has James
yet said you got to go sign Jonathan Allen?

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Probably knowing him? Probably okay, it would be my guess.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
Probably going back real quick because I just found the
quote you mentioned, the Kendrick Perkins quote. Did you see
Barkley's quote? He said, if the Lakers or Warriors go
do something, I want all the smoke. I'll up to it.
He said, quote, I don't whistle when I walk by
the graveyard or anything like that. I don't know what
that means.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
But I like that. Yeah, it does sound kind of tough.
I don't whistle when I walk by the graveyard, it
means he ain't scared of nothing.

Speaker 5 (12:11):
There.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
It is Charles standing on business, as is Tanner Hudson
back at the Bengalis. Should we get in a fight with.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
That's a great question. Everyone's doing it today. Should we
call anybody out? I mean I already said Sean Miller
week for not talking to the radio guys. Yeah, you
called James out just now a little bit. Yeah, I
can take James easy. Yeah, I think I think you
have a better chance against James and Sean. Who else?
John Cunningham, did you want to say anything? He's not media,
he's just derelict in his duty. I don't know, Yeah,

(12:39):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (12:40):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
If there's somebody I want.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
Here's someone that should be getting called out by all
of the city of Cleveland and many others. Miles Garrett Austin,
who is an All World player for the Cleveland Browns,
has been an unbelievable professional for the Cleveland Browns. All
he wanted to do was meet with Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam.

(13:01):
Wanted to sit down, Let's iron some stuff out, Let's
talk about some stuff. The owner of the team and
the best player on the team requested to sit down
and meet. Jimmy Haslam said, Nah, I'm good. Go speak
with general manager Andrew Brady because he oversees the football operations.
How tone deaf is Jimmy Haslm? Because Garrett has made

(13:26):
these comments about wanting out of Cleveland and now he
wants to sit down with you as an owner, maybe
you can hash those out, and instead you're like, no,
I'm not gonna sit down with you. How incredibly tone
deaf is that from an owner with the best player
in your franchise?

Speaker 3 (13:43):
What is he doing? Ridiculous? That's unbelievable from Jimmy Haslm.
Jimmy has Haslin's uh three to two want Jimmy Haslum's
a felon, isn't he?

Speaker 6 (13:54):
So?

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Are we not really that concerned? Isn't he the guy
who got in trouble for the pilot Flying Jay stuff
thinks that dude's a bomb? I think so. Just a
bad look all around. It just makes me thankful for
Mike Brown. I love Mike Brown.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
There we go. We're not picking a fight with him.
No love Mike Brown. Awesome stuff. Jimmy Haslin, what are
you doing. Uh if he has been. If you can't
tell by now, this is a Friday. Fridays are a
little bit different around here. Uh, but we do have
we do have. Again, there was an article in Cincinnati
dot Com today if you missed it, that is essentially
John Cunningham saying west Miller's going.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
To be back. They're close, the direction they're going in
blah blah blah.

Speaker 7 (14:31):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
We'll talk about that.

Speaker 6 (14:33):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (14:33):
But after we went off air yesterday, the news that
hit was that of Trey Hendrickson has been granted permission
by the Cincinnati Bengals to seek a trade. Andrew Whitworth
has weighed in, we will weigh in. Other teams that
are interested have weighed in, the media has weighed in.
Fans have weighed in in a big way. We will

(14:56):
talk Trey Hendrickson when we come back. Before we get
to that go ahead.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
I was going to say, we also want to give
our listeners a chance to weigh in yes on our
Revivefitnessystems dot Com poll question presented by Revived Fitness Systems
and coach PJ. Street. You can get innovative workouts, fat loss,
nutrition education, communication and accountability, and a comprehensive app base

(15:24):

five percent say yes they should. Our answers when we
get back here. It is since he three sixty Thank
you to Skyline Chili right here on the home of
the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 8 (15:45):
Loweger.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
There was some booing of the team last night.

Speaker 9 (15:47):
When it comes to sports.

Speaker 10 (15:49):
He's got something to say for just natural byproducts and
plenty of it.

Speaker 11 (15:54):
A poor play, Loeger.

Speaker 8 (15:56):
Today at three on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
Tony Pike here with my friends at Tri State Men's Health. Men,
Remember the first time you failed to perform in the bedroom?
Maybe you just laughed it off, no big deal, But

Now it's become a problem.

Well.

Speaker 4 (16:10):

Speaker 3 (17:02):
That was the goal when you were down twenty two.

Speaker 13 (17:06):
Steph from Mick Clurk.

Speaker 9 (17:11):
Did he coast him on that too?

Speaker 4 (17:13):
Oh my goodness, still so good man, Stephen Curry.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
Everything he does is like that's what Semas Lukashers wanted
to happen the other night since he three.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Sixty let's go in fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station thanks
to US Skyline Chili the news of yesterday.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
That was the call on NBC Sports Bay Area just uh,
just days ago.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
It feels like the report was that the Cincinnati Bengals
would ideally like to make deals with all three Trey Hendrickson,
Jamar Chase, and t Higgins. And then the news drops
yesterday that the Bengals have granted Trey Hendrickson's request to
seek a trade. They have allowed him the freedom to

(17:59):
work with a trade partner. Bring that back to the
table for the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, people immediately lost their
ever loving mind on social media about this, And I
understand that it's a hot button topic, and I understand
that it was a historically bad defense for the Cincinnati Bengals,
and now you're willing to move on from the best
piece of that defense who led the NFL in Sacks.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
I understand that.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
Now when it comes to what could you get in return,
I saw Jay Morrison tweet this out. You'd get sixteen
million in cap space for free agency, and in all likelihood,
I don't think you're getting a first round pick for
Trey Hendrickson, but you could add a second round pick.
You could maybe add multiple picks in the draft. Member

(18:44):
of the Bengals only have six picks, so I think
that's a value. There are already teams listed is interested.
The Washington Commanders and the Atlanta Falcons have already been
listed on different outlets of teams being interested in Trey Hendrickson.
But I saw so much backlash about the organization, and

(19:05):
yet Trey Hendrickson, to me, has always been the odd
man out. We've talked in length about his inability to
really defend against the run, his inability to bap many
passes down. He doesn't line up inside, he doesn't line
up on both sides from a defensive end standpoint. He
lines up where he's gonna line up every snap, and
he goes and gets after the passer. And I know
that there is a value for that. I know that

(19:27):
the production speaks for itself. But so many people so
angry on social media. Andrew Whitworth took to social media
yesterday and said people need to calm down a bit.
He said, quote, why is everyone so dramatic? A player
demands to be paid X amount. I don't feel good
about paying X amount. I say, well, I hold your rights,
so if X will only make you happy, go out there,

(19:49):
explore your options. Come back to me with a number
that other teams are willing to pay you. While keep
it in mind what you mean to me, so my
compensation needs to be included. Now we can have a
full train parent conversation about your worth to me and
maybe what it means to just day in Cincinnati. Transparency
is the logical answer. I agree with Andrew Whitworth on

(20:12):
that point. The other point that I'll make is if
you dive in and I saw Joe Goodberry tweeted this
out in an unbelievable video today. There's a value in
moving on from Trey Hendrickson and not having to replace
his production with one player. Can you replace Trey Hendrickson's
production with two or three players? I printed off today

(20:33):
the NFL defensive stat leaders from a SAX standpoint in
twenty twenty four. Obviously, Trey Hendrickson led at the top
of that list.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
This is the top fifty sackers.

Speaker 4 (20:45):
In the NFL. How about this? Trey Hendrickson was number one,
Miles Garrett was number two. Do you know what's the
same about both of their teams? They neither of them
made the play They didn't make the playoffs. Number five
on that list, Micah Parsons his team didn't make the playoffs.
Number ten, Leonard Williams didn't make the playoffs. Tied at twelve,
Will McDonald and Trayvon Walker didn't make the playoffs. Zach
Seeler didn't make the playoffs. What I'm getting at is

(21:07):
so many names on this list towards the top of
the list from a sack production standpoint alone, it didn't
result in their teams making it very far. In fact,
there's other names on this list. Nick Benito Denver Broncos
good season thirteen and a half sacks, didn't make it
out of the wildcard round. Jonathan Greenyard and Andrew Van

(21:28):
Ginkel of Minnesota, their teams both in the top ten.
The Vikings didn't make it out of the wildcard round.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
TJ.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
Watt his team did not make it out of the
wildcard round. The point to all of this is you
had to find number twenty seven on this list Austin
to find players that represented the AFC in the NFC.
In the Super Bowl, Josh Sweat had eight sacks he
led the Philadelphia Eagles. That was good for twenty seventh
in the NFL, tied with George Carloftis of the Kansas

(21:57):
City Chiefs also eight sacks. What I'm say I'm saying
what I'm getting at at least the stats say it.
You don't have to have the best d ND in
football and pay them the most money in football to
make sure it equates to winning in football. You need
the front four as a whole to produce, not one

(22:17):
player on the front floor the best team. You saw that.
You saw the Eagles d line as a whole. Get
after Mahomes and that offensive line of the Chiefs in
the Super Bowl. I'm not degrading Trey Hendrickson's value, but
the Bengals could be sitting here and saying, we have
so many holes and we were so bad on defense
while Trey Hendrickson led the NFL and these other teams

(22:39):
weren't very good with players that led the NFL in sacks,
and they're already paying these guys a lot of money.
Maybe there's value to spreading this out and finding more
players that can get after that.

Speaker 3 (22:50):
It's funny because so much of the national media was
kind of out there saying, oh, well, the Bengals are
just going to try to win games fifty to forty
five this year. Hello, that's what they did this past year,
and they lost those games too, and that included Trey
Hendrickson on the roster, that included him having a really
good season. I think, you know, a lot of has

(23:12):
been made of the moneyball comparison, which is, we're not
going to try to just replace Trey Hendrickson with another
great pass rusher. We're gonna try to spend that money
on three or four other guys that can make the
defense more consistent as a whole, and honestly, I think
that's the right move. Hendrickson had seventeen and a half
sacks this year. Seven and a half of them came

(23:33):
in two games, both of them against backup offensive linemen.
He did not register a single sack against the Baltimore
Ravens and the best offensive lineman one of the best
in the NFL, Ronnie Stanley. He did not register a
single sack against Fred Johnson, who is a backup left
tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles. He has dealt with a

(23:55):
little bit of injuries overall, played seventy two and a
half percent of the snaps last year. When it comes
to how his age compares to the top defensive ends
in the NFL money wise, when it comes to like
those players that are the highest paid Trey Hendrickson is
the oldest except for TJ. Watt. TJ. Watt is fifty

(24:16):
sixty seventy days older than Trey Hendrickson, and in the
last two hundred snaps of TJ. Watt this season, he
did not record a single recordable statistic age thirty plus
production went down. All these other guys that make a
ton of money. Max Crosby's twenty seven years old, Brian

(24:38):
Burns is twenty six, Nick Bose is twenty seven, Miles
Garrett who is an athletic freak, which those guys get
moved into their own category in my mind, twenty nine
years old, Watt thirty, Trey thirty, I mean, among all
those guys, and this doesn't take into account Max because
he was hurt for a good chunk of last year.
Hendrickson led all of him in pressures except he was

(25:00):
with Garrett, but that's pretty good. Pressures don't count. A
sacks doesn't equate to wins what and Burns had more
snaps than him, Garrett had one less snap than him.
His past his run defense grade was sixty five point
nine what Garrett and Bosa all better than him, Burns

(25:21):
just below him. He had thirty three tackles as a whole,
everybody had more. Bosa had the same at thirty three.
So I get that Trey wants the money. He is not,
at his age and level of production, worth thirty five
million dollars. Correct. I don't think he's worth thirty two

(25:42):
million dollars. I don't either.

Speaker 4 (25:43):
I would max it out at thirty million dollars, especially
with all the holes this defense hands.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
Correct. If you're a Bengals fan and you want to
be mad, I think you can be mad that the
organization has let it get to this point and they
have said, hey, we're gonna do this, and we're gonna
fix this and everything's gonna be okay, and then we
still haven't gotten the answers yet. You can be mad
about that. But from a roster building standpoint and doing
what is the most responsible thing, allowing him to seek

(26:10):
a trade is probably the smartest move.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
Yes, Like, look, you mentioned the stats. You mentioned the numbers.
Pass rush win rate is the number that everyone wants
to talk about. That number is defined as how often
a pass rusher is able to beat his block within
two point five seconds. Last year, Trey Hendrickson did that
twenty four percent of the time.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
That's a good number.

Speaker 4 (26:34):
But the point that I think a lot of people
are trying to make Austin is if you remove Trey Hendrickson,
you you essentially you don't have to find someone that
wins twenty four percent of their snaps. Can you find
two people that can equate to that and pay him
a lot less money while also filling all these other
holes on your defense, or maybe acquiring some draft picks

(26:56):
that can also be used to fill some holes on
this defense while also freeing up more money. Right, that's
the thing. Sixteen more million that could go to t Higgins,
that could go to Jamar Chase, that could go in
the future to a guy like Joe Tooney who they
missed out on this year.

Speaker 3 (27:10):
This week. I mean, think about Hubbard and Hendrickson alone,
those two contracts off the books is twenty five million dollars.
And you've got a new decordinator.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
You would allow that decordinator say, Okay, let me mold
this the way that I think most successful with the
personnel I need in my defense.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
This is what I think is the most perfect example.
The way that this team has built their defense that
has been successful, has been through mid level free agents,
guys that are looking to prove it, guys that are
looking to try to cash in at a later date.
DJ Reider, Mike Hilton, Von Bell and guess what the

(27:47):
greatest free agent signing in the history of the club.
Trey Hendrickson, a guy that they spent medium to higeh
money on to be able to see, Okay, let's see
what this guy can do. Let's prove let's go get
another one of those mid level free agents. And they
did that all across the defense that offseason, and they
hit on some of those guys and then they left.

(28:10):
The Bengals have showed you what they're trying to do
for a number of years now, and I have no
problem with them looking at Henderson saying listen, man, we
love you and we're glad you're here. We're not prepared
to spend that type of money on you because that's
not how we are going to approach our roster building
defensively moving forward. And who's to say you can't find
another Trey Hendrickson out there.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
If you want to criticize the Bengals, I think the
fair criticism is that they should do a better job
at assessing talent and getting the deals done quicker. Correct,
Because let's be honest, you and I were together last
year when he requested a new deal on a trade.
If they would assign him last year to what high
twenties thirty, it looks like a win. Same thing we
said about t Higgins, same thing we said about Jamar Chase,

(28:52):
same thing we missed out on Jesse Bates. If you
want to criticize the organization and say, man, they need
to assess the talent quicker and get deals done quicker,
I'm all for that, But I'm not for paying Trey
Hendrickson for the reasons we just discussed thirty two, thirty three,
thirty four million dollars. I respect the fact of if
you think that's what you're worth, we certainly respect you.
Go see if you can get that, and if he

(29:12):
you'll request that trade. And if he is, then that's
going to bring significant return for him, correct, And if not,
it's gonna get him to come back to the table
and say, maybe I was a little over the top
on what I thought I was worth it.

Speaker 3 (29:24):
I get that nobody wants to see a great player leave. Yeah,
but you know, and people say on paper. The defense
is worse without Trey Hendrickson. That might be true. Two
things games not played on paper, and even with them,
they were awful. Yeah, so you are at least putting
more bullets in the chamber to try to hit your targets.
Of ways we can fill the holes on this defense,

(29:46):
I mean we are. Let's say Hendrickson goes, looks like
Mike Hilton's out the door too, it'd be one guy
left from the Super Bowl defense it and be Logan Wilson. Yep,
how crazy is that? Logan Wilson also the only forty
million dollar plus contract that this organization has shelled out
since they extended Joe Burrow. That was a post by

(30:10):
Warren Sharp yesterday. The Bengals and Eagles so both signed
they're quarterbacks to extensions in twenty twenty three. Since then,
one Bengal was re signed to a contract.

Speaker 8 (30:22):
Fifteen to thirty.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
Welcome back, it's sincey three to sixty. You are listening
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station, or via the
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
It's appreciated either way. Leave us a talkback.

Speaker 4 (30:46):
Enter for your chance to win a Sinti Shirts gift
card with the best talkback of said week. Just spent
a full segment there talking Trey Hendrickson a major talking
point right now of conversation in the city of Cincinnati
and now Austin National Football League. Let's hear what you
have to say as well. Chad is calling in. What's
going on?

Speaker 3 (31:05):
Chad?

Speaker 14 (31:07):
He Thankshaking the call. Listen, you guys are right, but
the Bengals are exactly right how they're doing. Trey Henderson,
he still looking no further than like the Philadelphia Eagles,
like he brought up, they had their sack leader had
eight sacks. But the difference between their defense and our
defense was their defensive line had other guys that could
create problems where the Bengals don't have that. And if
the people should be made out the Bengals, they should be
mad at like you guys said, how they should have

(31:28):
never got to this point. The problem with what the
Bengals do is they go to these guys, like you said,
these mid level guys that want to prove themselves, and
then instead of being proactive and getting a deal done
earlier where it could be team friendly for the man
for the player, they let it get to this point
and that's what the people should be mad about. This
is what happened with Jesse Bates, and this is what
happened with the Henderson And if people don't understand, I
don'tunderstand what you're looking at. Because again there's value. I mean,

(31:51):
they can get more people than just Henderson on this defense.
And they should have never let What they should be
mad about it again, like you said, is they should
have never let it get to this point. And that's
the problem with the bank.

Speaker 4 (32:00):
Yeah, I think two things can be true. One you
can be angry that the Bengals allowed things to get
to this point and that the Bengals are handling this
situation the right way. Both those things are true. If
they would have taken care of it the right way
at the right time, it wouldn't be in this situation.
But to handle this situation the way they are, I

(32:22):
think is the correct way to do it.

Speaker 14 (32:25):
Yes, they know this is the way it should do it.
But like I said, like you said, they could have
jumped on this last year. They could have maybe got
him for twenty six, twenty seven, all the year last
year if they have been proactive about it. But it
is what it is. But now they're doing the right way,
and I think that he's not going to get the value.
I think that he's thinking he's wanting, and I think
he will be back. It's just my thing on it.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Yep, that's thank you, Chad, thank you.

Speaker 4 (32:44):
I think that's the beautiful part about what the Bengals
are doing here, and I think Andrew Whitworth outlined it
in his post. The Bengals have not traded Trey Hendrickson.
The Bengals have given Trey Hendrickson the go ahead to
find a trade partner and bring that back to the table
and let's see what we can do. And if he

(33:05):
doesn't find that partner out there, then he comes back
to the table and says, well, you guys were right,
here's what the value is.

Speaker 3 (33:10):
What can we do.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
He talked about how he loves it in Cincinnati, the
baby here in Cincinnati, wants to to create a spot
that he knows he's gonna stay, but also once what's
best for the team. That's what Trey Hendrickson said. Again,
multiple things are true. Letting it get to this point
is a miss by the Bengals. How this is being handled,

(33:32):
in my opinion, is a win by the Cincinnati Bengals.
We mentioned the Philadelphia Eagles, and we do so because
they just won the Super Bowl. They don't have a
player in the top twenty in the NFL in pass
rush win rate percentages.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
The Eagles and Chiefs have a combined full four players
on that list. Yeah, four players in the top fifty
in sacks correct from each team. Yep, and none of
them are double digits.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
And the other two Nolan Smith had six and a
half and Tshawn Wharton had six and a half. None
of them are sitting ahead of twenty seventh on that list.
But do you know what the Chiefs had? Chris Jones
won sixteen percent of his pass rush snaps. Do you
know who else did? Milton Williams of the Philadelphia Eagles. Yep,

(34:20):
they had help up the middle. That help combined with
abel guys on the outside. Do you know what? The
Bengals really didn't have much pressure up the middle. You
don't see the Bengals on this defensive tackle pass rush
win rate category.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
You know also goes you know to me looking at
the roster as it's currently constructed, you expect them to
make moves in free agency and beef up the defensive line.
But also we are now going to turn the page
to year two on McKinley Jackson and Chris Jenkins. Jenkins
dealt with that thumb injury. Jackson was missed most of
training camp. Both of them kind of got off the

(34:59):
slow starts, but we saw some stuff as the season
went along. Those two in their development I think will
be critical to the Bengals next season. How can those
two prove to get to the passer without being completely
derelict in their duty against the run. That has to
be one of the points if you want to circle

(35:21):
things for next year that you got to keep an
eye on. You know, fast starts is one of them,
tight end is one of them. The development of those
two defensive tackles that they drafted is a huge part
of this.

Speaker 4 (35:33):
Let's take another call, normally from Virginia today out in Goodyear.
Jeff is on the line.

Speaker 12 (35:40):
What's up, Jeff, Happy Friday, Jens, Yes, sir, The rain
is cleared out. Looks like we're going to have a cold,
windy baseball game today, But it is baseball. It is baseball.

Speaker 3 (35:51):
Definitely very rare in Arizona.

Speaker 12 (35:55):
It poured all night long. Overnight it was I thought
there'd be all kinds of flooding in every thing, but
be good to go grab a beer watching baseball today.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Definitely.

Speaker 12 (36:03):
Yeah, quickly before Trey when I was I was sitting
in traffic last night, I'm like.

Speaker 15 (36:09):
Oh, I'm going to put on Lance.

Speaker 12 (36:11):
Lance took west Miller behind the woodshed and gave him
the Grand Canyon Mule treatment last night.

Speaker 15 (36:16):
I never heard.

Speaker 12 (36:18):
Did you hear that, Tony?

Speaker 3 (36:19):
I didn't hear it, but I did.

Speaker 4 (36:20):
I did see what Lance had to say on social
media following Wednesday's game and into Thursday, and it does
not surprise me that that that's the direction he took.

Speaker 12 (36:29):
Oh man, that was some of the most brutal audio
I think I've ever heard on sports talk radio.

Speaker 9 (36:36):
He was not happying.

Speaker 16 (36:38):
So I kind of agree with everybody.

Speaker 12 (36:40):
I think what they're doing with Trey is right. The
problem is somebody could come back with an offer, and
we've got a management team still running the nineteen fifty
Cleveland Browns deciding if they're going to accept that offer
or not.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
Yeah, that I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (36:54):
That to me is the question mark is is where
do the Bengals have that value? And if someone does
come in and enter this conversation. Are they going to listen?
I think will be the next step for the Bengals.
But this step, this sole step, I think is the
right one.

Speaker 12 (37:12):
Oh, I think it's hard to say it's not. And again,
if nothing comes back, Trey has eighteen point seven million
reasons to at least play this year.

Speaker 4 (37:20):
There were just no There were so many people yesterday like, well,
you're you said you were gonna bring them all back,
and you got so much money available, how can you
let this happen that that to me was more of
you know, the outrage yesterday, And when you kind of
break this down it, it would not be financially smart.
If you're trying to win a Super Bowl, you're giving

(37:40):
him thirty two, thirty three or more million dollars.

Speaker 3 (37:43):
Oh, just look at.

Speaker 12 (37:44):
The comments under the release about signing Tanner Hudson this morning.
They probably should not have put that release out today.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
I would think there's a lot.

Speaker 4 (37:51):
Of interesting releases and timing of those releases going on
right now exactly.

Speaker 12 (37:56):
But again, Trey has a reason to come back if
he wants to Austin. You've said it a million times.
We cannot have a July and August locker room like
we had last summer. It just absolutely cannot happen and
they need to get some of this stuff resolved sooner
rather than later.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
Yep, Jeff, enjoy the time out there and have a
good weekend.

Speaker 17 (38:17):
Yeah, have a great weekend, guys, appreciate that.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
Thank you. One more break here now at number one.

Speaker 4 (38:22):

Speaker 15 (39:55):
Hey, Dave, Tony Hawfin's thanks to taking my call.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
Absolutely.

Speaker 15 (40:02):
I just wanted to call and let you guys know
that two are probably the two best sports reporters in Cincinnati.
You guys got the I mean, you understood what was
going on with this whole trade Henderson grade. You weren't
jumping off the local bridge like every other sports quarter
was yesterday. Rappean, you know, I mean Liscal even, I

(40:24):
mean even Goodberry. You listen to them, and they were
like getting ready to jump off a bridge, and it's like, dude,
Dovin never came out and said that they were going
to sign Trey Henderson said they would try. And you know,
and if anybody out there that's on those bridges right now,

(40:45):
go and listen to the Growlur podcast with Daner and
Charlie as they broke down Trey Henderson's season, and it's
exactly what they're you know what we're everybody's saying, this
guy's not worth thirty million dollars.

Speaker 20 (41:00):
Yeah, period, yep.

Speaker 13 (41:02):
I mean, he he had three straight games Dandy or La,
Baltimore and Pittsburgh where he had no sacks, no game
changing sacks in those games or plays. So how are
you going to pay a guy that kind of money
when he disappears.

Speaker 15 (41:20):
Ten games out of out of seventeen games.

Speaker 13 (41:24):
And it's just like, I mean so.

Speaker 15 (41:26):
I just wanted to call you guys in and say,
great job, keep up to good work.

Speaker 7 (41:30):
I love your show.

Speaker 15 (41:31):
I listen at lunch every day. I try to call
in sometimes or you leave a talk back every once
in a while. And then my last comment before you
bring in Charlie is I'm gonna I'm gonna request that
Trump do a executive order that we fired Jason Williams
from Theamquire and hired Charlie Dave.

Speaker 3 (41:50):
Thanks for the phone that he was doing so well.
I'm not going to call for people to get fired.

Speaker 4 (41:55):
Trey Hendrickson last year thirty three solo tackles seventeen and
half socks.

Speaker 3 (42:04):
Listen, we did this earlier in the week, Austin. I
get I'm not.

Speaker 4 (42:09):
I'm not arguing that they have the money to do it,
but when you look at what they have to do
in free agency, we've already outlined this. Sam Hubbard's gone.
That means you've got on the defensive line right now,
Miles Murphy, Cedric Johnson and Raymond Johnson, the third, Joseph Osi,
Isaiah Thomas. We don't know what Trey Hendrickson. They're probably
gonna move on from bj Hill. You got McKinley, Jackson,

(42:30):
j To Failey, Chris Jenkins at linebacker. Pratt wants out.

Speaker 3 (42:33):
You got a decision to make on a Keen Davis, Gaither,
Cam Taller, bridg Jordan Battle, Ginostone, Dax Hill, Mike Hilton's
probably out as well. Their problems go far more than
just the defensive line. Just because you have the money
to buy a really nice car doesn't mean you should
buy the most expensive car.

Speaker 21 (42:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (42:50):
You also, you know what, because you also got to
pay rent. Yeah, and you got to pay utilities, and
you got to put gas in the thing.

Speaker 4 (42:56):
And you got to go get your groceries. You can't
just drive the car around and ignore everything else in
your life.

Speaker 3 (43:01):
He mentioned Duke Tobin, and Duke was asked about trading
Trey at the combine. This is from Paul Dayner Junior
in The Athletic. The quote from Tobin is this, our
preference with Trey is to have him on our football
team because we want him. So I never really talked
open talked about open preferences for trading guys because all
that does is take on a life of its own,

(43:23):
and that's not something I want to do because I
want Trey on our football team. He's under contract. We're
looking to pay him for what we believe will be
really good future years, and we see him as not
falling off in his career. That's why we're actively trying.
And if we get to the point where we're actively
trying to trade him, maybe I'll give you a call.

(43:45):
There we go, not the the not quite the ringing
endorsement he's given T Higgins the last couple of years.
Very very interesting, man, I love it. What a way
to segue into love that this The fan base just
crashes out over every little thing.

Speaker 16 (44:04):
You know.

Speaker 3 (44:05):
I put out there that the argument I just made
in the first hour, about seven and a half of
his sacks came in two games against bad players. And
someone says, why are you hating on our guyp He
deserves to be paid by somebody. That's the weakest thing
you can do, all because he wants what's best for
his family. Where do you work, I'm going to come

(44:25):
to your job and bad mouth you and hope you
never get a rang. I want what's best for my family.
Everybody wants what's best for my family. This is our
job is to analyze how this situation fits for the Bengals.

Speaker 4 (44:35):
The job of the The job of the Bengals is
not to have the NFL sack leader on their defense.
The job of the Bengals is to put together an
eleven man defense that can compete for Super Bowls. The
defense last year with the sack leader in the NFL
was not competing for a Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (44:51):
Bang. I'm sure where else you need to go with that.

Hi, Charlie, how are you? Charlie.

Speaker 4 (45:57):
Let's before we even dive into the sports world. What's
going on with the Bearcats, the Reds, the Bengals. How
are you doing?

Speaker 16 (46:05):
Wow? Thank you. I'm doing well. I had tokey Bowl
for lunch. I am doing at a nice ice coffee
this morning.

Speaker 3 (46:12):
I'm doing well.

Speaker 4 (46:13):
That's so good to hear, Charlie. Let's start with the
Cincinnati Bengals, the local fans and some of the met
They erupted yesterday with the Trey Hendrickson news. Where do
you stand on the Bengals decision to allow Trey Hendrickson
to seek a tray.

Speaker 3 (46:31):
We just talked about this.

Speaker 4 (46:32):
We both are kind of in agreement here that if
you want to criticize the Bengals for maybe not prioritizing
this a year ago or getting this done, that's one
thing I tend to believe the Bengals are making the
right decision here. Where do you stand on the Trey
Hendrickson situation, Well, I think.

Speaker 16 (46:47):
Isn't being discussed enough with the fact that this is
the third consecutive off season that Trey Hendrickson has asked
for a raise, and who among us, if we were
great in our field, wouldn't want that. But the first
time in twenty twenty three, the Bengals gave it to him.
Actually that Burrow strained his cast was the day that
Hendrickson got a raise, plus another year tacked onto that contract.
If Hendrickson didn't accept that, he'd be a free agent

(47:09):
right now. Then in twenty twenty four, Hendrickson requested to
trade and the Bengals said no, thank you. And Hendrickson
understood that the Bengals told to know. He wasn't even
away for very long. He kept showing up the facility
every day, which was interesting for a guy who was
trying to create some tension between the two sides. And
then this year the Bengals, you know, after giving them
a no and then giving them a raid the previous year,

(47:30):
they've said all right, good luck. And for me, that
change of action is notable. Is very significant signals to
me which stretch and these things are going, and I
would trade Henderson. I think the best way to build
the Bengals going into the long term as a young
defense that grows together. I don't think they'll be able
to replace trade, but I think the best vision for
the long term defense and illustrating him.

Speaker 4 (47:52):
What would you see as the value possibly for a
player like Trey Hendrickson, if you're the Bengals, what would
you be asking for?

Speaker 16 (48:00):
So here's the thing, Like every single move, maybe except
for one, but even the one kind of an exception,
every single time edge rusher edge rusher has been traded
in a situation like this, the team that traded the
edge rusher was the one that won the trade. Brian Burns,
Montez sweat Case, Young Hassan Reddick, Leonard Williams, they've opened
out Von Miller was won more the Miller trade, all right,

(48:21):
maybe a draw because the Rams won the Super Bowl,
but the Broncos got Nick the Needo out of that,
and then all those other names I mentioned, the teams
that sold won the trade, and the Bengals know this,
I'm sure. Also the teams on the other end of
the side of the negotiations know this. So for that reason,
for the reason of what we just saw, like with
Joe Touny just got a four Deebo saying, no doubt
what a fifth or sixth, what I would be comfortable

(48:43):
trading for would be a third and a seventh. I
would then have sixteen extra million of cap space. I'd
use that. I'd prioritize Dio Denbo. I'd also lookd at
Malcolm Cootz. I'd be able to get an edge rusher
and a guard in the second round, and that goes
a long way towards solidfy the Bengals offensive line. The
Bengals could sign to edge rushers with this flexibility, they

(49:04):
could get say o'danggo and Pat Jones from the Viking
to actually think is the perfect viper for Al Golden
at that position. So now you're a defensive line. You
have o'dango Murphy Jones a round two pick. Maybe you
find some edge setter in the draft in a Day
three pick, maybe it's Isaiah Thomas. You have a stronger
guard than you would have had. I'm starting to like

(49:25):
the direction of this young defensive line that could really
grow together. Sure, you're not going to have the home
run here that Henderson is. But Henderson wasn't as much
of a closer last year as he's made out to
be either.

Speaker 4 (49:36):
Yeah, that point in itself the value of Trey Hendrickson.
How much do you look, Charlie at his ability to
stop the run or the inability to really move to
other parts of the defensive line. Do you factor that
into his value as well?

Speaker 16 (49:51):
Here's the biggest thing out of fat and again, Trey.
Trey was really good last year, but the story of
the season was losing plays and losing moments. That was
Duke Cobn's literal opening statements at the NFL Combine. And
so you know, I did this exercise a few weeks ago,
but I went through all the losing plays from the
season and kind of then I circled back and I
was like, wait, where was Trey? And I've got the
list in front of me. Trey was doing something that

(50:12):
actively negatively impacted the play on That would be five
of the top six losing play moments per win probability
added or subtracted in this case, plus two more on
top of that, they are a bit lower down the list.
What were Trey's winning plays, or he took over in
Kansas City against Kinslesulimatia, who had turned out in an
NFL tackle, but the Chiefs didn't know that yet. He

(50:34):
did a nice play against Dallas, and then monster game
against Dan Moore, who's the Steelers left tackle who I
doubt you spent much time thinking about Dan Warren. You know,
those were his only winning plays of this season. And
then when you dive deeper, all of Henderson's big games
were against bad offensive tackles or one offensive tackle.

Speaker 12 (50:52):
With a broken foot.

Speaker 16 (50:53):
So he was great and he will significantly help any
pass rush. But what the Bengals are miss thing isn't
exactly what you're probably thinking of when you look at
the real tangible impact that Henderson actually made towards winning
games last year.

Speaker 4 (51:10):
The thought of if you do find a trade partner,
you move on from Trey hendrickson, how much emphasis does that?
In turn, then for this organization put on getting the
t Higgins extension done and the Jamar Chase extension done.

Speaker 16 (51:24):
You know what I heard yesterday was, you know it's
t Higgins or buff now, because like obviously show I've
shared what I believe, But you could have made the
case that the Bengals should keep Trey, but they still
need their the flexibility, so you do a tag and
trade with te Like. I wouldn't believe in that, but
I would understand that, as Burrow says, though you can't
let all your your stars walk out the door. You

(51:44):
need to keep most of your best players. And again,
the Bengals could have sold keeping Tray and trading t Again,
I would have disagreed with that, but there's no way
you can spin losing Tray and not getting a deal
done with Higgins. To me, this creates even more pressure,
even more bonus on the front office to be a
little more aggressive. It gives Higgins probably a little more

(52:06):
leverage in this case, because now if the Bengals don't
get Higgins locked up, they're stuck. And specifically if they
don't get him locked up before free agency, well then
that costs you tap space and flexibility that you could
have had heading into free agency. So it's interesting too,
like the Bengals m over the last you know, sixty
years has been patience, waiting it'll all come back around

(52:26):
at the end of the day. I can't remember a
moment like this where they actually have to be and
they're trying to be proactive and that creates a really
a difficult type rope that they have to cross, which
isn't the Bengals way, and that's why there's so much
pressure within the organization right now.

Speaker 3 (52:43):
How much do you think the Max Crosby deal played
into kind of pushing this over the top when it
came to what Trey wants.

Speaker 16 (52:53):
I know this about Trey. I know that Trey doesn't
understand why he doesn't get the recognition of being one
of the best offensive I'm in this sport.

Speaker 12 (53:01):
Now.

Speaker 16 (53:01):
Part of that's like the public's fault, and by the public,
I'm not talking about you as a listener, but I'm
talking about like society. You know, we love Allbalve Garrett
and his big personality and the way he gets his
sacks are very flashy, and he's very active in the
media and there's all this kind of stuff attached to
it that has led to the brand of a Miles
Miles Garrett or Max Crosby or a Michael Parsons, those

(53:24):
brand t J. Watt, they have great brands. Trey Henderson
and no one's to blame it this, but Trey Henderson
has done a poor job of branding himself as a
star pass rusher, and he's also the way he gets sacked.
The style of play he has also isn't necessarily the flashiest.
I mean, he's an old school guy who doesn't wear gloves.
So for all of those reasons, Trey's just never gotten

(53:46):
the recognition. I know that's something he's not too thrilled about,
but it's also not to something he's been too active
and chasing. So those things add up together. But Trey
Henderson wants to be recognized as one of the best
in his position or at elite, and certainly he's played
like that out of the last few seasons. And an
easy way to get that recognition is with a salary
that brings you to the top of your position.

Speaker 4 (54:07):
Charlie, I want to switch gears a little bit and
talk the Cincinnati Reads because you wrote and I think
it's so interesting when you talk Charlie's chalkboard on substack.
I think people forget Hunter Green was looked over last
year as the opening day starter. He is the opening
day starter this year. There was an article last week

(54:28):
buster Onney listed his top ten pitchers in Major League
Baseball and then he had a list of ten honorable
mention guys and Hunter Green wasn't listed essentially in the
top twenty. I think hunter green ceiling is very high.
You've seen him this spring, You've studied what Hunter Green does.
What is the ceiling for Hunter Green when he puts
it all together.

Speaker 16 (54:50):
So you know, when I was out at spring training
at a one conversation with Terry Francona on one of
his media availabilities about what makes a great playoffs starter,
and you know, like the classics sample of Kurt Schilling
in the Bloody Shot game, and you know, you know,
talked about how he was not going to take Kurt
Schilling out of that game because he had earned it
and because he just had a way he was carrying
himself and a confidence about it that you couldn't doubt.

(55:13):
Getting to that level really is the only last step
for Hunter Green. Hunter Green kind of can't pitch much
better than he did last season. The only caveats that
would be then completing the whole year. But when Yoka
what he did, you know, the lowest opposing batting African baseball.
I don't have the stat in front of me, but
he was an eighteen or so starts, we're six innings plus.
It was something like that. He went on a run

(55:33):
where he was consistently pitching deep into games. The maturity,
the growth of Hunter Green was the story of his
last season, and all of that is how he earned
his title. Is the literally tangibly how he earned his
real recognized role now as the leader of the pitching staff,
and it's how he earned this opening day start, which
you know he didn't earn last season, so there's one

(55:54):
more step to that. And you know, Hunter is a
guy who I remember talking to him in May about
how he was got through the film of what he
did against the Dodgers and I was like, you don't
play the Dodgers again, and he was like, what do
you mean? Like we might face them in the playoffs,
so it would be such a big game. I have
to make sure I do the work now so I
have the notes to go back and look at. Like
that's how hundred Green thinks. That's why he wasn't like

(56:16):
offended or publicly share that when he didn't get the
opening day start last year, because you know what he
says is I'm here to be the best pitcher on baseball,
and it doesn't really matter who pitches against the Nationals
on March twenty eighth when I have this, this and
this is the goals I'm really set out for. So
he's really made some real changes behind the scenes to
his process and all that to become that type of picture.

(56:37):
And today's a fun official stamp recognition moment for that.

Speaker 4 (56:41):
What do you know or what is the conversation right
now around Spencer Steer? We know he got the quarter
zone injection, is there is there a level of concern there.

Speaker 16 (56:51):
It's all about what the Reds want this plan to be. So,
like I've seen a lot of examples over the years
where you know, Kyle Farmer, for example, got a quarter
zone shot in twenty twenty two, I think like five
later he was back and he was as hot as
he's ever been in Cali. Farmer our member saying like
he should become the spokesperson for cortzone shots because how
quickly they can get you back on track. So that
can work, and that can be a good strategy in

(57:13):
formula to create tangible improvement. But do the Reds want
to cone to play the long game with Steer and
rebuild up his shoulder through a longer throwng progression. How
much do they want to push it? How conservative do
they want to be? You know, I'm not saying this
at all. Some guys end up getting two quarter zone shots.
Who knows what the plan was spent to Steers right now.

(57:33):
They've particularly been not type lipped, but not you know
that it really is day to day, is what I've
heard about Spears. So from that perspective, let's just see
how he recovers, Let's see how he rebounds. But I'll
say this too, like I think Steer's the most underrated Red.
Like if our putting together the Red lineup, I'd have
Steer batting third or forth. Like I think Spencer's really good.

(57:54):
His teammates recognized him. Is that the Reds recognize him.
Is that when Francona took the job, one of the
first things I heard was Francona loves Spencer Steer, and frankly,
I'm you know, really impressed by his game as well.
You want a team full of Spencer Steers. So I
mean that's a big loss, and it's a big loss
in the outfield, especially where they're they're sin, they're light,
and that would be a hole on the depth chart

(58:15):
that a guy like Austin Hayes who really have to
break the door down and you know, really click to
fill because of how much to your means to this team.

Speaker 4 (58:24):
Do you view anything from a positive that maybe we're
not talking about or realizing enough about this Reds team?
And on the other side, is there something that as
opening day gets closer, you're still concerned about the.

Speaker 16 (58:36):
Other One's that like Steer I talked about the other
one's Matt McClain. Like everyone says, the core of this
team is Elli and McLain. From a position player perspective,
it's not Ellie. It's not Ellie and then McLain and
Steer and Lux and Stemens. No, it's it's Ellie and McLain.
And I think the story of this season is going
to be I mean, they're not going to be burrowing Chase,

(58:56):
but they're kind of going to be trying to be.
And you know we always talk about and Chase is
a duo. They're together, they've got this history. Like a
perfect example was you saw it in that interview with
Jim Day the other day, Like Matt and Ellie really
are friends, Like they're really really close, and multiple people
have told me that Matt being out there on the
field one will just keep elleymore engaged in positive and

(59:17):
also like if Ellie makes an air like Mac and
say like you know, in the field, like come on, man,
let's go like and they have that type of banter
where McClain is such a game or Ellie is two.
But McClain can help Ellie on the field from that perspective,
concerns that we're not talking about, you know, I mentioned
the outfield. Right now, they're really counting on Austin Hayen,
and he's looks fantastic in camp, coming off the top

(59:40):
twenty four season. You know, he has things to prove.
I'm really really interested to see what TJ. Friedel is
this season. Truly one of the best center fielders in
baseball in twenty twenty three. Last year. Injuries prevented us
from really seeing the full Friedle all year, but he's
been bad in the leadoff pretty much all spring, and
that's something he's going to have to re established prove

(01:00:01):
again the ability to be that table center at the
top of the lineup, which wasn't even a style of
player he was trying to be last year because of
the impact the injuries had on him. So the outfield
has a whole freely as well. Coming off of down year,
They've got a lot to show the outfield defense. You know,
I need to know more about I still have no
idea if Gavin Luck can play third base. A lot

(01:00:22):
of questions, a lot of uncertainty with a lot of
these players, but some real positives in the you know,
Ellie McClain, Green, et.

Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
Cetera, Charlie.

Speaker 4 (01:00:32):
I would be remiss to not ask the report today
Jason Williams talked about John Cunningham has essentially given the
vote of confidence to Wes Miller as the guy that's
going to return next year. I have different thoughts on
this because I don't feel like a statement was really necessary.
He's still obviously got years on his contract. If you're

(01:00:54):
good with where he's at, I don't know that the
statement was necessary. But you're a Cincinnati sports fan, You've
watched this basketball team. What did you make of the
comments and do you agree with the comments as it
relates to west Miller.

Speaker 16 (01:01:08):
Yeah, So, to be honest on uh, was it two
days ago, yesterday? Whenever the game was I kind of
knew how those last ninety seconds were going to buy.
I mean, anyone who's watched the Bearcat last year is
kind of knowing what to expect. So what I decided was,
you know what, I'm just going to watch West Miller.
And so the last ninety seconds of the game, I
watched West Miller. And I've been to all the games
over the last several years, those ninety seconds were the

(01:01:30):
most emotional that I've ever seen him. There was a
lot of I don't know the right word, it's pressure, intensity, emotion,
nerves like it didn't look like the West that's usually
you know, fiery but direct and efficients on the sideline.
And that's what I'll remember about the game the other day.
And he has to be better in those moments. There

(01:01:52):
has to be better communication.

Speaker 7 (01:01:53):
Now.

Speaker 16 (01:01:53):
Obviously some things are out of its control, the whole
shot clock thing getting reset out of his control. But
then like after the shot clock violation, the guys are
around them and let's say real quick, all right, we're
gonna foul until it gets to this number. And obviously
that wasn't communicated well enough directly in that moment, the
communication and the guys a wearing it to look towards
the sideline in that moment falls on the coaching, So

(01:02:16):
you know, West has to be better there. That's a
part of him saying it falls on me at the
end because the communication and action in that moment had
to be better, and in that moment he was just
really emotional.

Speaker 3 (01:02:25):
Charlie, you are You're the best man.

Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
I know.

Speaker 4 (01:02:27):
It's such a busy offseason for the Bengals. Red's coverage
kicking up with Opening Day right around the corner. What's
the easiest way for listeners to follow along with everything
that you're putting out there.

Speaker 16 (01:02:40):
There's Charlie's chalkboard dot substack dot com. Today, I've got
a look at how franchise quarterbacks around the league, including
Joe Burrow, our assistant GMS now and I asked some
gms at the combine what they think of their quarterbacks
speaking their mind and being public about how they want
to build their team, and I enjoyed that. And also
then I've got a feature today on Cincinnati Magazine about

(01:03:01):
Chal Stewart, who I'm planning my flag, I'm calling my shots.
Stewart the dude, everyone's talking about him like that. I
think he's their best. He's the prospect I've been most
excited about on the hitting side cruise. So let's start
talking about ChEls.

Speaker 3 (01:03:16):
Charlie.

Speaker 4 (01:03:16):
You're the man, all right, look forward to that and
so much more, look forward to catching.

Speaker 3 (01:03:19):
Up against you. Plant the flag at midfield of your
rivals field. That's all I care about. Planet where you are?
All right?

Speaker 16 (01:03:29):
I don't. I don't care about a house off I
I've know that's something. I never developed an opinion on
the whole flag planting thing.

Speaker 3 (01:03:37):
It was the pause before the dude, I don't you
are the absolute Charlie. Oh, I know. I'm never going
to get over it. It's constant, Charlie, it's every single day, Charlie.
What I care about most is you having a great weekend, man,
Thank you.

Speaker 16 (01:03:54):
Thank you, Tony, have a great weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:03:57):
Charlie Goldsmith. Charlie's chalkboard. He's on top of his ever man.
He's just sharp, yes, just sharp and everything, and pretty
clear on where he stands about Trey Henderson. Very clear
in more ways than one. Very clear. Hope some folks
out there were listening since he three sixty Your Talkbacks next,
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 1 (01:04:17):

Speaker 3 (01:05:29):
We're gonna get Tommy G in studio today. Yes, sir,
you know he might be wearing one of those jerseys.
You never know.

Speaker 6 (01:05:37):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:05:38):
Talkbacks is what we call this segment of the show.
Talk about trying to get them all.

Speaker 9 (01:05:43):
It's time to talk to Lima.

Speaker 22 (01:05:46):
Why do Katie and Troy Blackburn make everything as difficult
as possible for this team? I mean, they laid out
a plan and they've already failed. Free agency hasn't even started.
I feel bad for Duke constantly has one arm tie
behind his back. He sat up there and said, I'm
confident we can get all this stuff done. We need
to get done. They made him look like an ass.

(01:06:09):
I thought we had turned a corner. But the same
as it ever was, same as it ever was.

Speaker 4 (01:06:14):
That's the I think that's the preconceived ideology that that
may not be true in the Trey Hendrickson situation.

Speaker 23 (01:06:21):
Hey, it's got it's been a while. I got to
rank him who takes more time off and is out
of the studio more, Moeger, Tony Pike, or Lance McAllister.

Speaker 3 (01:06:36):
Certainly not me Mo. I would say Lance, just because
the schedule that he is on he's not here very often.
Then I would say Mo. And then Tony, Hey, Vallas,
Kevin in Nor to Kentuck. You here, but you already
knew that. A little disstat in history for you.

Speaker 24 (01:06:52):
Twy fifteen kids, U came In's basketball team win a
perfect thirty one to zero in a regular season. The
seventeen Ottie's Norse won the Horizon League championship and made
their first appearance in the March Madness Attorney. Now it
just looks like Trey Henderson is history.

Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
With a right.

Speaker 21 (01:07:15):
When your day is long, Wow, because you see season
is it's time for wester cool. Even though I like you,

(01:07:35):
bro Ma, I think Cunningham should, I don't know you
at all. I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (01:07:42):
Well, now do you know what that original song is?
That is r E M everybody hurts? That is a
fantastic song.

Speaker 9 (01:07:53):
That could be Oh.

Speaker 5 (01:07:57):
The hop Stove of Hot Topics with Terry and Harry.
Today's episode is Friday's sprily foot Rubs around the Campfire,
brought you by hammeron hay Hill, Strickland Propade, Red Twell

(01:08:18):
dwell more to us on the injuries front, I tweeked
my elbow on a routine six four three DP. What's
a Budweiser double poor? I felt that something snapped by

(01:08:39):
non pouring elbow and got a corrizoned shot from doctor Tim.

Speaker 3 (01:08:44):
Khrushchev re his non touring elbow. Gosh, you gotta worry
about the non poor.

Speaker 24 (01:08:53):
We got a team right here in town and usually
lets his down day Hood who they think has been
dick No.

Speaker 25 (01:09:03):
Pretty good bingle players come and go. They try their
best with nothing to show. Game by game, season by season.
Why can't we win? I have some reasons. It starts
at the top with the same old same and it
ends with that same last name. You guys try to

(01:09:29):
have another best day ever?

Speaker 3 (01:09:32):
Man, Thank you. Unbelievable well said, I mean from a
poem standpoint, I agree.

Speaker 26 (01:09:39):
Hey, I'm a Savior University fan, so I can't say
that I'm totally disappointed, But I do want Cincinnati Kings
to do well. How can mister Cunningham sit there and
say with a straight face that he really thinks Wes
Miller can do the job when he's proven that he
can't even get the players to play.

Speaker 15 (01:10:01):
They won't listen to him. How can they support that
going forward?

Speaker 3 (01:10:08):
I don't know. I don't know at this point.

Speaker 27 (01:10:12):
Hey, Fellows, as Vinny, I got something that's going to
shock the world, but it's what the city needs.

Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
You know what, I'm tired of.

Speaker 27 (01:10:19):
Being gratefulness of a Burrow and Chase and t. You know,
we're gonna stop all this nonsense, you know, send a message.

Speaker 16 (01:10:26):
Trade all of.

Speaker 27 (01:10:27):
Them, Trade Jama, trade t trade Burrow.

Speaker 16 (01:10:31):
You know who?

Speaker 3 (01:10:31):
We bring back? Andy freaking Dalton.

Speaker 27 (01:10:34):
He almost led us to a super Bowl in twenty fifteen.
If he didn't get hurt, we could build around him.

Speaker 14 (01:10:39):
What's freaking do it?

Speaker 4 (01:10:40):
I wish we could take the audio of him and
cut it and figure out what was going on in
the background there.

Speaker 3 (01:10:46):
I don't know, sounding like sitting on matters.

Speaker 28 (01:10:49):
Guy.

Speaker 29 (01:10:49):
First, want to thank you, mister former President Ronald Reagan.
Thank you so much for your warm kind comments. Uh,
the gift card would be cool. But I don't have
a town like you guys do. I'm just someone that
calls in and gives everybody you know what, But I
tell it like it is so Bob Huggins forever. And
the reason why we got to trade Trey is because

(01:11:11):
we can't afford him after what they did with the Raiders.

Speaker 4 (01:11:15):
Your thoughts, love hugs. They can't afford him. It's it's
just not in the best I think football move to
pay him not much money with so many other holes.

Speaker 30 (01:11:28):
Friday shut out coach Sha Miller, Xavier Muskie's a balling.

Speaker 17 (01:11:40):
Little sprinkle.

Speaker 30 (01:11:41):
Steph Curry shift the lights out last night, A little sprinkle.
Summit Country Day basketball. Yeah, regional final tomorrow. Oh baby,
go bear Cat.

Speaker 4 (01:11:56):
That's that's former Bearcat great Kevin Johnson, the coach with Summit.
I miss I miss our guy.

Speaker 31 (01:12:03):
I say no to trading Hendrickson, right, now because of
the fact we still haven't filled the whole left by
DJ Reader. So I know there's Henderson's got limitations and
the money, but do I trust his team to do
anything soon about then filling the whole of Hendrickson?

Speaker 3 (01:12:23):
No, I don't. Can you replay the just the start
of that? It's Greig yah know, let's let's go to you.

Speaker 6 (01:12:34):
You guys want to talk about tone deaf folks, you
have to put John Cunning him at the top of
that list with Jason Williams, you know, and saying that
he backs Wes Miller. The fan base should eat him alive,
and I hope they do. Hopefully he'll be gone July first.

(01:12:56):
He's an idiot. You need to get rid of him.

Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
This is this is taking years off our guy's life.
Man is he was the most cool, calm and collector.

Speaker 6 (01:13:05):
He is disgrunted taking to admit that he's made another mistake,
or maybe he knows that it'll cost him his job if
he does admit that he's made another mistake. This stupid
Crown tournament. I don't know how that's gonna work because
we're probably gonna have like four players on the roster

(01:13:25):
once the transfer window opens. Let me know what's your
thoughts on that or thanks guys, having a good weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
I just want him to have a good weekend. I
want him to be I don't know about the Crown
because I agree, I don't know how the roster shakes out,
but give these kids an opportunity to go out to
Vegas and play in a tournament.

Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
Who knows?

Speaker 32 (01:13:46):
Hey, guys, how ain't going listen the Hulam Bengal fan
by way at Texas anyway?

Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
Uh t Higgins?

Speaker 32 (01:13:53):
He got the transition tag and I keep saying Tea
has to go out and make a trade for himself. Theoretically,
can the team just come in and sign him.

Speaker 17 (01:14:03):
I know they got to give up two first round picks,
but that's just puzzling.

Speaker 32 (01:14:10):
And one last question, what's Jake Browning's contract status Austin?

Speaker 3 (01:14:17):
Uh, Jake is under contract for next season. He's a regular,
regular guy now, he's not restricted exclusive rights free agent anymore. Yes,
a team can agree to a deal with him, but
the Bengals would have the chance to match the offer sheet,
and if they don't, they have to give up two

(01:14:37):
first round picks.

Speaker 9 (01:14:40):
I think it's okay to trade Hendrickson. He is a
little bit of a one trick pony.

Speaker 3 (01:14:46):
You gotta make sure you get good value back for him.

Speaker 16 (01:14:49):
You know.

Speaker 10 (01:14:49):
If that happens, the Bengals defense got more holes in
Swiss cheese, more holes than Royal Albert Hall in London.

Speaker 9 (01:14:59):
We can you use a two for one.

Speaker 10 (01:15:01):
Maybe you gotta get in some before you can get
back out of it.

Speaker 4 (01:15:06):
WHOA, let me write that down. You gotta get in
some before you can get back out of some. Okay,
interesting man.

Speaker 33 (01:15:13):
DJ key to the Bengals season next year is Al
Golden getting this defense to the top half of the league,
preferably top ten with or without Trey Hendrickson. And for
all of you that are beating the T Higgins bandwagon drum, Hey,
I like t Higgins, but good luck if you're paying
your number two receiver thirty million dollars and he plays
ten games.

Speaker 17 (01:15:34):
Just one man's opinion, it's.

Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
A fair opinion. Yeah, that's probably what part of the
hold up is with the negotiations.

Speaker 34 (01:15:41):
Yeah, this is Mark from Florence hold Now I'm the
lead off guy, so we can come to the table
and renegotiate that position.

Speaker 3 (01:15:52):
I got my lineups for the rigs.

Speaker 17 (01:15:55):
I've been working on that.

Speaker 34 (01:15:56):
Then I've been working on my Bengals front office issues,
so you know, we'll meet up and negotiate it.

Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
Listen, good to hear you.

Speaker 4 (01:16:07):
There were so many people that were legitimately getting concerned
we hadn't heard from them. I think so many now breathing.
Just a sigh of relief, collective sigh of relief.

Speaker 35 (01:16:16):
Yes, Happy Friday, guys. First, I want to thank Austin
for all the segments that you post on the podcast.
It just makes it so easy to rely listen to
things to Tommy g does a great job explaining the
ins and outs of soccer when you don't understand it all.

(01:16:36):
And three, the comeback about the two thousand and four
Red Sox is a great way to see our new
manager for the Reds.

Speaker 3 (01:16:47):
Linda, Thank you. I just watched the first episode of
that last night. Yes, the first episode is all about
the three season, but yeah, I'm fired up to watch
more of it. Thank you for that, Linda.

Speaker 36 (01:16:59):
Hey you guys, Uh, just two quick things. I guess Hey,
we got tied end from taking care of the hutchin yep.
And then if Trey doesn't get a trade and I
don't does that include him getting a contract with the
other team too, and we don't get what we want back?
Where does that leave him? Is he stuck playing for
us to prove his worth again or is he really

(01:17:21):
worth that much with everybody else knowing that he's just
a one trick punning like we knew.

Speaker 4 (01:17:26):
What do you guys think, uh, A team would not
have to agree to the long term. I'm sure that's
something that Trey would want in a trade proposal, but.

Speaker 3 (01:17:37):
That's pretty much the only way it happens. Yeah, I mean,
the only reason he's going out seeking a trade is
because he wants he wants the long term Marke deal
from one of them.

Speaker 37 (01:17:46):
Hey, Tony, I just had another take on I guess
west Miller first, mccrunnin start.

Speaker 3 (01:17:54):
I've left to talk back yesterday about it, so.

Speaker 37 (01:17:56):
I look back and see what mc cronin's record was
in first four years. In the month of February, it
was four and twenty two. So I don't know. I
think we're just being a little too harsh on west Miller.
We weren't given we were given conin some free passes
during that time.

Speaker 3 (01:18:16):
I don't think we're being too hard.

Speaker 4 (01:18:17):
I think there's an expectation when you're playing in the
Big twelve, when you assemble the roster and you pay
the roster, the amount of money that you see has.

Speaker 38 (01:18:27):
To the west, to the west. Every game plan is
traffic to the west. You must not know your team.
You must not know your team. You should be unemployed
any minute. Matter of fact, you should never coach another minute.
You must not know your team. You must not know
your team. We should have had another coach by tomorrow said,

(01:18:48):
don't you ever for a second get to thinking you're replaceable.

Speaker 3 (01:18:54):
Right mad?

Speaker 20 (01:18:55):
Okay, thirty million a year for Trey Hendrickson, see you later.
They need to take that thirty million and make a
solid secondary to get the Bengals off the field on
fourth down. Their defense all of last year, I saw
the opposing team be third and eight, third and twelve,

(01:19:18):
and they'd automatically just throw a fourteen fifteen yard pass
and get first down.

Speaker 3 (01:19:24):
That's because none of the bums around Trey Hendrickson could
get to the quarterback too.

Speaker 39 (01:19:28):
Gotta have one of the other Austin, Tony Friday Way, Austin,
you mentioned the Logan Wilson contract.

Speaker 3 (01:19:34):
Then my connection dropped.

Speaker 9 (01:19:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 39 (01:19:36):
I'm sure you mentioned the eight Philly Eagles that were
resigned to contracts over forty million. Since then, we missed
the playoffs and they win the Super Bowl.

Speaker 16 (01:19:43):
That sums it up.

Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
They Bengals could have, you know, they could have signed
the Big Three. Wrap this up already.

Speaker 39 (01:19:48):
I think though, the majority of the fans, whether they
signed Tray or not, just tired of the clown showed
dumpster fire as Mike Brown shouldn't be this far behind
the eight ball.

Speaker 3 (01:19:58):
Thank you.

Speaker 40 (01:20:00):
Everywhere you look, you see these signs. Austin three sixteen.
Austin three sixteen says I just whipped your ass. Well,
Austin three sixty says, I just chopped your ass. Maybe
you disagree, maybe I rubbed you the wrong way.

Speaker 17 (01:20:15):
What are you gonna do?

Speaker 3 (01:20:16):
Change the jails? Eh, they'll think.

Speaker 40 (01:20:19):
So these are the best takes you're gonna get because
show pro Austin Elmo said, so.

Speaker 3 (01:20:26):
What an Austin three to sixteen promo? There is?

Speaker 16 (01:20:28):
That?

Speaker 3 (01:20:29):
Was it supposed to be Steve Austin? That was stone cold?
What hell? Yeah? What go for a couple of bits?

Speaker 13 (01:20:35):
Charlie, Charlie bu Barley banana fan of Bo Barley me
my Momrley Charleley.

Speaker 3 (01:20:45):
I have no idea what this.

Speaker 41 (01:20:49):
The Reds are coming, It's almost opening day. Hope is
in the air, at least till May. The fans are hyped,
the beer is cold, A brand new season about two unfold.
The first pitch flies, the crowds alive. Could this be
the year the Reds finally thrive? The bats are swinging?

(01:21:11):
The runs come fast? Hey, where's David bell Man? They
fired his acts.

Speaker 3 (01:21:20):
Pretty good? That's good. That's good.

Speaker 42 (01:21:22):
Hey, Tony and Audie, it's Jeff in the left. I'm sorry, guys,
it has been so long.

Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
Welcome.

Speaker 42 (01:21:29):
I left to talk back, but I want you to
know I am here every day listen to you guys,
and I'm in total agreement with you about Trey Hendrickson.
I don't think the Bengals should tie up that much
money in a long term deal when they could spread
the wealth around and maybe get more for their for
the money.

Speaker 9 (01:21:47):
So I agree with your thanks much.

Speaker 3 (01:21:50):
Have a go on. That's good to hear from you.
Make the most out of your dollar.

Speaker 8 (01:21:54):
Tony Austin val so good.

Speaker 11 (01:21:57):
Completely agree with him on the Trey Hendrison, saying and
yes some no one cares. Nineteen h twenty four days
pretty much win a found.

Speaker 28 (01:22:06):
Lost, trade hendricks Oh he thinks about nothing. Now now
it's once needed to thrive. We need to hold de
save sixteen men. I trade him fourth d a fifth

(01:22:28):
and a bag of chie.

Speaker 3 (01:22:32):
Thank you.

Speaker 31 (01:22:35):
The Bengals finally got with the times.

Speaker 33 (01:22:38):
I was shocked when I saw that yesterday they made
the right decision on Trey Hendrickson.

Speaker 3 (01:22:44):
Whatever you can get out of him, I say, you
take it and move on. Okay.

Speaker 43 (01:22:51):
He straight to me that the Bengals front office looks
a lot like Kevin Bacon in the movie Animal House,
holding up his hands and screaming.

Speaker 9 (01:22:59):
All as well, all as well.

Speaker 43 (01:23:01):
As he gets thrown over by a trove of free
agents who actually want to go to a team to
pay his money. You got to actually spend some money
before you get rid of reputation that you're a cheap team.

Speaker 3 (01:23:16):
They're going to spend money. They will spend the money.

Speaker 27 (01:23:19):
If we trade Trey, does that possibly give us the
flexibility to bring back bj Hill?

Speaker 3 (01:23:25):
Maybe? Yes, yeah, I would say.

Speaker 6 (01:23:27):
So.

Speaker 20 (01:23:27):
It's happened the second coming of Mark. The sky's opened up.

Speaker 50 (01:28:48):
Yeah, I can relate to west Miller. I myself get
duoded on a regular basis in the bedroom. I'm that's
on me. I'm very selfish. I'm not good with the fundamentals.

(01:29:09):
Sometimes the effort is lacking, and I get it.

Speaker 21 (01:29:15):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (01:29:15):
I deserve that.

Speaker 4 (01:29:17):

Speaker 3 (01:29:39):

Speaker 46 (01:29:40):

I love those the Dave conception, the mister Brown jingle.
But I mean the fact that Kirkshin's not even in
like the top three, and how good that was. It's
what an unbelievable week. But you made the point that uh,
the talk back that You've got a friend in me
jingle for multiple reasons. One he's been up there before

(01:30:23):
and two guy Mike, somehow, some way, my kids have
like bought back into toy story this week, and I've
heard that song so much and it just tied in perfectly.

Speaker 47 (01:30:46):
Tomply lost, the talk packs of multi personality, the random
streets attacking.

Speaker 4 (01:31:03):
I think for me it's the whopper comment thrown in
there that puts the icing on the cake. Honestly, I
said this before. It might be our best that might
have been our toughest decision yet. Yeah, that was that
was not easy. There was some really really good ones
in there.

Speaker 3 (01:31:16):
Well done all around. We'll take a break.

Speaker 4 (01:31:22):

This must Get Tier Minute is presented by CTI Clinical
Trial and Consulting.

Speaker 51 (01:31:44):
I'm Joe Sunderling along with Byron Larkin and Byron we
watched this game year after year, and every year I
come away more convinced the three point shot maybe the
only shot you want to take in a game anymore.

Speaker 52 (01:31:55):
How do you feel about that, Well, three point shots
are a big part of the game.

Speaker 9 (01:32:00):
Really evolved.

Speaker 52 (01:32:02):
My first two years in college there was not a
three point line, so then my last two years in college,
the shots that were considered bad shots are now considered
good shots. So it took time to kind of adjust
to that. Now, I think it's kind of gone the
way where usually you see teams that all they shooter threes.
We just recently played a the ball team that had

(01:32:23):
eight players who took more threes than two. So it's
something that's definitely embraced by a lot of teams, and
it's definitely a weapon, and that's something that you'd like
to have in your arsenal as a coach.

Speaker 51 (01:32:36):
You know, you see players you think, man, if they
can only get that three point shot down, the sky's
a limit for that particular player. But it's easier to say, obviously,
than to do, how do you become a great three
point shooter?

Speaker 52 (01:32:45):
Yo, It's repetition. It's all about competence. It's all about confidence,
and that confidence is built by seeing the ball go
through the basket. So you got to do your work
in the offseason.

Speaker 3 (01:32:56):
ESPN fifteen thirty.

time we catch up via the phone. Tommy is always
on the move. He's catching a plane somewhere, he's selling
another house, He's going through items at the house and
putting them on Facebook marketplace. But today, and for a
very special reason, Tommy G made it into studio and
made it into studio bearing gifts. I mean, we are,

(01:34:31):
we are, as you would call it now official, like
a referee with a whistle.

Speaker 3 (01:34:35):
I've almost been brought to tears. I'm so happy about this.
We will like a referee with a whistle like that.

Speaker 4 (01:34:40):
We're gonna post it here. Uh, We're gonna post what
happened right after we get this segment here. But this
is a Tommy Tommy Tommer you know him now, just
by gallairder.

Speaker 11 (01:34:49):
Tony, Tony, Tony in the flesh, my friends, my brother.

Speaker 3 (01:34:53):
I feel like I'm on the side.

Speaker 11 (01:34:54):
Come in, I know, right, I mean, this is I
don't even know how long that was a long time ago.

Speaker 3 (01:34:59):
What's up. I used to interview you after a game.

Speaker 34 (01:35:03):
I know.

Speaker 11 (01:35:03):
And it's good to be here in studio. We did
this a couple of years ago, a year and a
half ago or something. I really got to find my
way up here more often. But I'm glad to be here.
It's a lot of fun. Let me see you, guys.
Let me throw a scenario at you. Yeah, let's say
FC Cincinnati's best player franchise player request to meet with
the owner of the club. Set owner says no, how
would you respond to that? I would be mine? Oh boy, well,

(01:35:25):
I know where you're going here. And I walked into
the facility this morning and and our dear friend Patrick O'Leary,
with the comms group with FC Cincinnati, is also a
diehard Browns fan. And I was buzzing around this morning
ahead a couple of things got to the facility, was
running in. I had not seen that report yet, and
he said, did you hear the latest Brown's heartache? And

(01:35:46):
I said, just yet? Just rip the band aid? Hit
me in, Like, in what way does that make sense
in a world?

Speaker 16 (01:35:54):
Now?

Speaker 11 (01:35:54):
I've never been a billion naror owner of a professional
sports franchise, but surefire Hall of Yeah, face of the franchise,
aside from your running back who also now is exploring
free agency. Like, what what damage is done by taking
a meeting with anybody in life?

Speaker 4 (01:36:14):
It's already bet enough that he wants out. Maybe a
meeting could help men something right, Like.

Speaker 53 (01:36:19):
Maybe you could could put like so dug inliev that
you're not gonna like what he is, Like you don't
want to hear him tell you to your face that
you should have never traded for Deshaun Watson and that
you single handedly ruined the franchise when it was good again,
like I don't know, man, it it it really I
just kind of banged my head against the wall and
then refocus on the Orange.

Speaker 3 (01:36:39):
Such a bad look.

Speaker 4 (01:36:40):
Let's refocus though, please, and I know that's what f
C Cincinnati looking to do as well.

Speaker 3 (01:36:45):
Let's talk about the week that was.

Speaker 4 (01:36:46):
We spoke last week, and that was coming off advancing
in the KONKAKEF Champions Cup. It was also coming off
a MLS opener win against the Red Bulls.

Speaker 3 (01:36:56):
Since then, this team went on the road.

Speaker 4 (01:36:58):
You mentioned last week Philadelphia, a team that surprised a
lot of folks with what they did against Orlando in
week one. What went wrong in that game over the
weekend in Philadelphia?

Speaker 11 (01:37:09):
Just about everything. I mean, there's been two really lopsided
losses in what the last two plus seasons for Pat
Newnen's men. At Saint Louis on April fifteenth or twenty
twenty three, Bradley Carnell was the head coach, and now
this one in Philadelphia, the press created all types of

(01:37:30):
problems for s C Cincinnati. The back line wasn't very good,
nothing was really good. I had somebody ask me afterwards
who I thought was the best player for sh C Cincinnati,
and nobody stood out as having had like a great day.
And the reality is is that Look. MLS Cup was
not one in week one with a very good win
against New York and it was not lost last Saturday

(01:37:52):
in Philadelphia. Was it a tough performance?

Speaker 3 (01:37:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:37:55):
Did it create some soul searching probably, But that doesn't
define this team. It doesn't find what this team's going
to be capable of doing. I think, if anything, it's
in a message to major legue soccer at Philadelphia is
in a good spot. Yeah, and Philadelphis scored a lot
of goals and you better know where Tyberibo is at
all times, because all of a sudden he has five
goals in two games. So I think that it was
a frustrating day, that that things just didn't work out,

(01:38:20):
and that Pat Newton needed a response coming out of it.

Speaker 4 (01:38:23):
How much, And I know it's not excuse making, but
this team has done a lot of overhauling, yeah, in
the offseason, and I don't want to say surprised, but
the way they started with Conker Calf and getting the
win against New York, it maybe maybe a little fool's
goal that not that they won't get there, but it's
very hard in any sport to bring in a lot

(01:38:45):
of new players together, go through a camp and then
expect to hit the ground running in the sense of
a full MLS season, especially the length of an MLS season.
So not to make an excuse for it, but how
much do you hit it back and say, yeah, they
do need to get together.

Speaker 3 (01:39:00):
Still, it's the storyline.

Speaker 11 (01:39:01):
Tony and Kevin and I talked about it quite a
bit after the match against Philadelphia, and we talked about
it a bit Tuesday night.

Speaker 3 (01:39:07):
With the CONCAFT.

Speaker 11 (01:39:08):
Championship game tomorrow will be this this club sixth match
in eighteen days. Then you're turning around and going down
to Monterey, Mexico to take on T Grace and what'll
be a hostile environment on Tuesday night. Then you're going
to Charlotte to play in your old home a week later, right,
And so it's gonna end up being eight matches in
twenty five days to open the season. And Pat and

(01:39:30):
I talked about this a little bit on the pregame show.
The hard part is they haven't had a chance to
train as a team. And you talk about the new faces, Well,
Vander wasn't part of preseason. He came in with, you know,
days left. Luca Orshana wasn't really a piece of the
puzzle during preseason. Now he's working his way back in.
I thought he looked really good at the end of
that match against Te Grace, And so it was a

(01:39:52):
disjointed preseason. Ye Yakubo, who obviously is an important piece,
he came in late. Matt Miasgo is still out, Nick
Haglin's coming back into the mix, so there were pieces.
Lucas Engel was late coming in, Hilberta Flores was late
coming in, so you have all these different pieces that
there wasn't really any continuity, all right, So when you
get continuity Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in a regular week, but

(01:40:15):
they haven't had that and they're not going to have
it until they come back from Charlotte and get ready
for Atlanta, who is home here on what March twenty second,
So that's when they can really get in like those Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday training sessions where they improve as a group. Right now,
it's play a match, recover, have a day of training
to prepare for the next one, and play a match.

(01:40:38):
That's how it went with this first leg against Tea Grace.
Now the other way around is they're going to play
tomorrow at home, have Sunday to recover, fly early Monday
to Monterey, Mexico. So not a small journey by any means, Right,
go down to Monterey, train there. That's your one training
session to prepare and play a really tough Tea Grace
team late Tuesday night.

Speaker 4 (01:40:58):
The match again t Gray's earlier this week, did it
feel like a missed opportunity based on them having some
players unavailable, based on the opportunities that presented themselves over
the match, especially coming off a loss, where you just
want to sometimes the best thing you get, you get
beat on all phases.

Speaker 3 (01:41:16):
You just want to get back out there. Right, you
had that chance.

Speaker 4 (01:41:19):
You still come away with the draw, but it does
make this trip back extremely tough.

Speaker 3 (01:41:24):
What's the overall feel after Tuesday? And now you have
to go get a goal.

Speaker 11 (01:41:27):
You know when Neil Neil draw is not going to
be good enough in going down there, so you have
to find a way to score at least one and
a one to one draw, then that goes extra time
to two draw. If she say time he wins a series,
so on and so forth. We could play all those scenarios,
but it did feel like a misopportunity because you come out,
you get the book a goal in the third minute, right,
dream start like game on. Now these guys got to
play and see what happens, and then the goal for

(01:41:50):
them was so disappointing. Just in the effort teenage Todab
didn't get to the header and that goal is scored. Look,
it's a beautiful ball in the box. It's well finished,
but it should have been defined. It have been knocked away.
That's their goal. So one nil would have been felt good.
You're going back with the advantage instead, and then there
were opportunities in front of the net. Alvis makes the
big run. Denk had that ball come to his foot

(01:42:12):
and it's all there for the taking and he puts
it wide. Look that's gonna happen. It's just unfortunately happened
in this situation. It felt like the better the chances
were there for Cincinnati and that they didn't grasp them
and take that two one lead. You saw Pact though
he knew he had to go for it right and
he was making those offensive subs. Lug Arshano coming on,
You saw Sergio Santos come onto the match. He was

(01:42:32):
putting guys in who could impact the game in a
meaningful way towards the offensive side. Like he wasn't holding
on for a one one draw. That wasn't good enough,
and he knew it. But I think we saw enough
that this team should feel confident going down there and
knowing that in the past this team has been very
good under pad Noonan on the road that they can

(01:42:52):
go down there and get the result.

Speaker 3 (01:42:54):
But they're gonna have to be very good. Obviously, the
in game strategy for those Cup games a little bit different.
Is there any difference to the way that they prepped
for those games as compared to MLS games.

Speaker 11 (01:43:03):
No, But I think Pat made the point and I
brought it up on the pregame show, was that this
was a different one to prepare for because of the
way the situation went down with the head coach. You know,
they fought. They played Saturday night. I'm talking about t
Grace right same time that if she since he played
in Philadelphia. They won the match two to one. Everybody
shakes hands, captain goes, shakes the head coach's hand, puts

(01:43:25):
the knife in his back. The next morning, the head
coach is canned. Yeah, it's the most bizarre thing ever.
And the team's doing well, so they can the head
coach and the long time captain, Ghito Pizzarro, gets the
job and retires on Sunday for them then to fly
here on Monday. And Pat was like, well, you know,

(01:43:47):
I kind of asked him, like, what do you expect
if changes. He's like, well, I don't know who's starting
at defensive midfielder because the guy's the head coach now,
and he goes, so that's a question mark. And then
they did change the shape. I mean in two days, right,
they changed their formation a bit, so I think they'll
have a little more data now t Gray's placed tonight,
so they'll have another game with the new head coach
in and you know, maybe Luca was shoot. I thought

(01:44:10):
Luca again. I think I said at the beginning, Luca
was very good in the game in the twenty seven
minutes that he came on, and he influenced it. And
Pat told us on the air he wanted the team
to be better on the ball, and I thought that
Luca was very good on the ball, and then that's
that's his game. So I think that that maybe you
see Lucas start, Maybe that's an opportunity for him to
you know, be back at full fitness and get a start.

(01:44:31):
So let's see. You know, I loved Pats quote yesterday.
One of the reporters asked him during the press conference,
you know something about Tuesday, and he said, we'll talk
about Tuesday and Sunday, like I gotta I gotta win
on Saturday. And he's right, you know, he knows he's
got to get a home result. Opportunities there to get
the home result, make it happen, and then go from there.

Speaker 4 (01:44:49):
I think it's interesting because you mentioned the inability to
kind of put a match to bed, learn from it,
grow from it, move on to the next one. Instead
it's right back into training, right back into the next opponent.
Can you find a positive in that when you do
get to stay and play at the friendly confines of
CQL Stadium. It's different if if you're now having to

(01:45:09):
turn around and go to Toronto, right but to host Toronto
who's coming off a loss to Orlando one point right
now on the season they split against or they draw
against DC United. How much does it help to get
an opponent who may be there for the taking and
also have it in your home building.

Speaker 11 (01:45:27):
Yeah, I think it's big. I think it's a great
opportunity to get three points to you know, just stabilize
the league schedule now that it's unstable after two games.
But but you know, it's certainly shell shocked a little
bit after that that four to one loss at Philadelphia.
So no, I think you go in, you're at home,
you're sleeping your own beds this week. You know, the
team will will recover on Sunday and like I said,

(01:45:48):
and then then have to go Monday and and make
very quick work of the situation to get ready for
a tough matchup on Tuesday, and then you come home
on Wednesday, you train on Thursday, and you go to
Charlotte on Friday. Yeah, and I'm gonna go see the
Tony Pike statue outside Bank of America State.

Speaker 3 (01:46:02):
It's on the.

Speaker 11 (01:46:07):
So I'll go take a picture of that. But uh no,
I think, uh this this whole stretch. Look, this is
the reward of being successful and being good club you
want to play in these games. It's the detriment I
think MLS teams, obviously of of the calendar the way
it is currently will change where I guess we're gonna
find out and you know, the next eight or nine
months or something. If it does, it does change. But

(01:46:29):
you know, we're playing a team from League m X
who's in form, who's on the back quarter of their season,
as opposed to f C Cincinnati, who's two matches in
to their league slate. But uh look, you got to
deal the hand, your your dealt That's with anything in life,
and uh f C Cincinnati will and you know, I
think that they're very much prepared for this Toronto match
and and that I know they'll be ready on Tuesday

(01:46:51):
night to to try to upset tea grace in their house.

Speaker 4 (01:46:54):
How much leeway do you give because you're you're around
this team a lot, a lot more than than the
average fan. Maybe you'll ce Cincinnati, But anytime you get
into professional sports, there are people that become impatient. And
this team struggled a little bit down the stretch of
the season last year as opposed to where they were
mid season and firing on all cylinders and leading the standings,

(01:47:15):
and then a little bit after the start, a little
bit of a slower start with the setback against Philly.
From a time frame standpoint, how long do these things take?
When you mentioned in the inability to have a normal
week and knowing the season is so long, no one's
hitting the panic button, But how long do you give
yourself too to say, okay, things should now start.

Speaker 3 (01:47:34):
To be hitting on all cylinders.

Speaker 11 (01:47:36):
Well, I think those two weeks post Charlotte, which would
be the last two weeks of March, will be big
because those will be regular week build ups. Right a
normal week, they'll play that Charlotte game, will fly back
right away afterwards, they'll be off Sunday, they'll have a
recovery day Monday, or maybe they'll get extra day off Monday,
and then they'll have a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of regular

(01:47:57):
training when you refine those things, when you work on chemistry,
when you work on extra things. Because Friday is your prep,
Like that's your day, that's your NFL walk through on Saturday, right,
Like it's not Look, do they go full speed when
they go eleven v eleven? Yes, but like you're not
working on the minutia, the fine stuff that makes the
team better. So I think those last two weeks of
March will be really big for this team. And then

(01:48:18):
what's interesting is you know what happens againstig Grace, Right,
If f C Cincinnati advance, then they're gonna gain two
midweek games the first the first two mid weeks of April.
And here we go again with a with a crazy
you know stretch of four games in fourteen days or
fifteen days or whatever it ends up being, you know,
based on where those games fall. But yeah, sure, I

(01:48:38):
think everybody has to be patient. This team has the pieces,
they have the talent. Evander is going to be fantastic.
We've seen Kevin Dnke. He's had a goal contribution in
four of the five games he's played. And when this
chemistry comes together, and when we get Matt Mioska back
into the mix and you get some of these depth pieces,
and look, the windows still open for another six seven
weeks until late April. So Chris Albright, for all I know,

(01:49:00):
is out shopping, you know, trying trying to improve the team,
and I'm sure looking at options to bolster the roster.
That this team has all the pieces to be a
championship caliber team and to win trophies. But that's one
step at a time.

Speaker 4 (01:49:14):
Right lastly, and we can dive more into this as
it gets closer. But you'll be coming up this year
on call number three hundred.

Speaker 11 (01:49:20):
Three hundred in April. Yeah, I got to check my math.
It'll be early April one way or the other. But
it's pretty cool. Tenth year of the club.

Speaker 4 (01:49:27):
Do you have like a obviously opportunities to to win
the Supporter Shield and moments from a team standpoint, do
you have games that you could just think off the
top of your head that that those moments stand out?

Speaker 11 (01:49:39):
Yeah, I mean I think the obviously the night they
won the Supporter Shield in Toronto was was great. The
first ever MLS game at Nippert stadium, and you know,
obviously Nippert has has you know, a special place in
my heart as it does yours. Yes, But but that night,
or I guess it was afternoon, but that that afternoon,
that day, being in Nipper and just pummeling Portland, who

(01:50:02):
had won the Western Conference the year before. You know,
we're like, oh, we we're gonna be okay, and not exactly,
but you know, like took a little while to really
get the thing rolling. But man, that day was so
much fun. All the tension, all the national at tension
around it, you know, beating Philadelphia to get to the
Eastern Conference final in twenty three, the Sports Shield winning season,
and that late goal by Yerson Mascira. You know, somebody

(01:50:24):
asked me an interview what the loudest decibel moment has
been in these ten nine ten years of calling games?
Probably that Urson Muscarra game winner. But then you go
back to the first year too, and like hosting Crystal
Palace and seeing it, or even the first couple games,
having thirteen thousand and seventeen thousand and being like, what's
going on.

Speaker 4 (01:50:44):
Early in the career. Is it Ibrahimovich that came in, Yeah,
he came in like watching Yeah, Ibrahima, just.

Speaker 11 (01:50:51):
When the Chicago fire came in and Columbus came in
there and the Open Couple on the twenty seventeen and
it was sold out and Nippert was rocking. I mean
it was I'm getting texts probably from you and everybody
else of how the concourses were packed and everybody' shoulder
to shoulder. So yeah, there's a lot of really cool moments.
I know the club is remembering a lot of them,
and you know, gonna celebrate a lot of them as

(01:51:12):
the year goes along, and there'll be a cool celebration.
I think it's August tenth match with alumni game things
like that.

Speaker 3 (01:51:19):
So no, it's it's pretty cool.

Speaker 11 (01:51:21):
It's cool to come up on three hundred. I mean,
I think you take all those moments like you don't
want to take anything for granted, right, Like you know,
whether that's you know, ten games you play in the
pros or one hundred games or two hundred games or
four hundred games or whatever, you.

Speaker 3 (01:51:35):
Be planning something here for your three hundred and sixtieth call.

Speaker 11 (01:51:37):
Three hundred and sixtieth or maybe that'd be the next
time I'm in the studio. So I caen that I'm invited.
I got to get gifts to get the invite. It's
gonna be a big one for three six. It's just
it's crazy to believe how far it's coming. And starting off,
I remember at in Nepperd Stadium not really knowing soccer here,
like is this gonna go? And from there to the

(01:51:57):
MLS to your own stadium.

Speaker 3 (01:52:00):
It's it's been.

Speaker 4 (01:52:00):
An incredible ride and uh, certainly some amazing things happening.
Thank you for for coming in today.

Speaker 11 (01:52:05):
Always, always, anytime we have Tony Pikes on baseball's.

Speaker 4 (01:52:09):
Here in the no yes actually signed by all members.
It was when Austin threw a first pitch out, but
not on the actual mound. He threw it out at
that like the Budweiser zone of I just cure. I
was trying toidways read the signature, you know, men.

Speaker 3 (01:52:26):
Waiting on the sheriff Dave Keaton to sign it and
then we'll put it up for auction.

Speaker 4 (01:52:30):
But uh, listen, I think there is the term kitted up.

Speaker 3 (01:52:34):
We got kidded up today.

Speaker 4 (01:52:35):
Austin Tommy g brought not only jerseys, but jerseys with
names on the back.

Speaker 3 (01:52:43):
Yes and social media. Stay tuned social media. Right when
we go to the post tenth season special edition Legacy kit.

Speaker 11 (01:52:54):
Down on the Roman numeral acts, down on the jock tag.
You got the Apple TV there.

Speaker 3 (01:52:58):
This is unbelievable. What a gift, what a day. Thank
you Tom.

Speaker 4 (01:53:02):
Thanks to Tom Gallader, you know him as Glader, the
voice of FC Cincinnati. Always appreciative of your time on Fridays,
and I look forward to doing it again next week.

Speaker 3 (01:53:10):

Speaker 4 (01:53:31):
Welcome back, since e three sixty. We're rolling along here

ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. It's Friday. You know
what that means. We got to check in with our god.
Bob man Jean from the University of Cincinnati and novacare
getting ready for the finale of the regular season for
basketball on the road to Oklahoma State. He's joining us
now before he heads out, Bob, what's going.

Speaker 7 (01:53:52):
On, Terry? How are you?

Speaker 3 (01:53:55):
I'm great? How are you?

Speaker 8 (01:53:56):
Bob?

Speaker 16 (01:53:57):
Thank you?

Speaker 7 (01:53:58):
Jess, Like you said, we're packing ready to go out
to Stillwater, Oklahoma, you know yippie Cowboys and you know
player last game of the year. Then get ready to
go to Kansas City and win the conference tournament.

Speaker 4 (01:54:12):
Man, I like it. I love the energy right there.
I love the optimism. There was optimism Bob watch his
professional spin. Here a lot of optimism around the Cincinnati
Red season this year, and a lot of that hinges
on Spencer Steer. They didn't attack, they didn't go trade
for a big bat in the outfield because they said, well,
Spencer Steer, he's a power bat. He can play the outfield.

(01:54:35):
He didn't have any type of procedure done in the offseason.
He had some shoulder soreness last year, but after a
full off season of I would assume rest and rehab.
He's entered training camp and he's not He's not healthy.
He's not able to do much throwing. He's done some swinging,

(01:54:55):
but he's not been able to do any throwing. Is
that something that's normal from a baseball standpoint? If there's
not a procedure done to have the whole off season
and to come into spring training and immediately have that setback.

Speaker 7 (01:55:09):
Well Tony again not knowing his particular case, but keeping
up with it in the media with what's being reported,
you know, usually through you guys and other stations, and
it certainly sounds like it wasn't a bad enough shoulder problem.
And you see that all the time baseball, where they're
not significant enough to require surgery, So you know, perhaps

(01:55:30):
they didn't see an outright big label tear. They didn't
see a big rotator cuff tear or a capture tear,
so you don't go in there and automatically want to
perform surgery. There's a lot of reasons for shoulder paint
and throwing. A lot of it stems from either overload,
meaning maybe last year, this season, he pitched enough in

(01:55:53):
the season to really or through enough last year plus
hitting to where he irritated the shoulder. And unless you're
going to throw one hundred and four mile in our
fastball or unless you're pitching as a relief pitcher forty
two forty three games a year, you know that overload
gets to you and you kind of have to take
it easy, and the off season it usually calms it

(01:56:13):
down and gives them a chance to recover, let's use
that word, they get rid of that soreness and recover.
I saw a couple of guys over this past winter
where they didn't even pick up a ball until three
weeks prior to spring ball down in Texas. So you know,
the bottom line is that you're hoping in the off

(01:56:34):
season that that rest period is sufficient to get you
back to baseline or you know, get you back to
being able to hit leaf and then you know, end
up throwing. But again, affield throwing is really hard. People
don't appreciate, you know, your center field or your left
field or enough because a good ball in the center

(01:56:56):
field and then even if you try to get it
hard into second base, that's a long throw. And then
you've got to make it quick and you might go
a couple innings without making a play. You watch them
warm up in between innings and it's almost I won't
say it's a joke, but it's just you know, lob

(01:57:17):
toss a little bit, but then all of a sudden,
you get a ball hit to the wall and you
got to pick it up and slam it into second base,
third base, and certainly today's world you don't see many
outfielders who can throw at home, but that hard acceleration
and extreme poster your shoulder position when they're in cocking
puts a tremendous force. Years ago, I had a kid

(01:57:41):
come in from Montreal Expos who was a center fielder
and one day late spring training, he made the throw
from the wall to third base and completely ruptured his
arnor collateral ligament in one throw. So that kind of
shows you the lot type of force that these outcouilders
put on the arm. But again by setting them down

(01:58:01):
in the winter and you're hoping them to get to
that point and they don't see anything structural that requires
the surgery. You know you want to continue that conservative
route and certainly going a Cortison shot, you know from
what I you know, from what you've heard and others
have heard. You know, that's another chance to get the

(01:58:22):
thing that you know, get the inflammation out of there.
It can have to calm down. You don't want to
be doing a lot of them, but you know it's
it's something you can try.

Speaker 4 (01:58:31):
So let me let me ask you the court zone
shot itself, because we hear this all the time, not
only in sports, but with regular injuries as well. The
court zone injection, the court zone shot one is the
courtA zone shot itself. Is it meant to heal or
is it meant to just cover what those symptoms are
for a period of time? How do you view the

(01:58:52):
court zone injection?

Speaker 7 (01:58:54):
The court zone is an anti inflammatory. It's a very
powerful antime eflabatory. It's using uh, you know, you can
use non steroidals such as Napperson and celebrates and and
then you can use steroids and they're all meant to
do they're you know, they're all meant for a different
level of inflammation. If a tissue, any tissue, hamstring, shoulder, back,

(01:59:20):
if it's painful, generally it's a sign that there's some
inflammation within that tissue within the body. And when you
you know, once you go on an anti inflammatory, a
lot of people will think, well just masking by pain. No,
if we see inflammation with the ultra center the MRI,
we're giving you either oral steroids or Napperson or celebrates

(01:59:45):
some sort of anti inflammatory to reduce the inflammations. Then
once the inflammation's gone, then your pain goes away. So
you know, you hear about you know, people worrying about well,
I don't want to take anti planmeatories were that's fun.
Then you've got to rest, you gotta ice, you gotta stretch,
and you got to give it time. Most of the

(02:00:06):
time in athletics, you know, you don't have that much
much time, so you tend to want to use some
sort of anti inflammatory, whether it be in the non
steroid variety or the steroid variety. And they should only
be administered under the direction of your family doctor or
you know, somebody in the sports medicine world, because do

(02:00:28):
they have negative side effects? Sure they do. They They
can irritate your stomach, They can cause you to have
liver issues. Can the issues I almost sat like a
TV commercial. You know, you take this medicine, you's got
all these side effects and definitely antime plammatories and steroids
have side effects, and they should only be administered at

(02:00:49):
the advice or prescription you know, of your of your physician,
because you want to make sure you're taking the right
product for the right reason. But once you get the
inflammation to control in athletics, then you you know, you
can go back and feel comfortable mechanically. So, you know,
do we use steroid shots, sure, but they're very selectively used.

(02:01:13):
It's not like when I started in sports fifty years ago,
pack the steroids shot at everything, and then we learned
over the years all the negatives and contraindications to use
in steroids.

Speaker 4 (02:01:25):
What do you make so the path to give the injection?
If all goes well, great, you pick up and and
you advance. What would be the next step if the
quarter zoneer of the steroid shot wouldn't help, how long
do you give that to work? And then what would
that next step be if if that's not.

Speaker 7 (02:01:44):
The answer, Well, I mean, if you're going to do
anything more aggressive, I mean lack a surgical intervention, you've
got to make sure that whatever you're operating on is
for the right reasons. And so, you know, again, hopefully
with the steroids shot, the the patient's comfort comes, you know,
gets better, the pain goes down, and then you slowly

(02:02:06):
work them back with their mechanics and you slowly get
their strength back. And once the steroids shots over, and
you really need to have a good rehab program under
the direction of a sports PTE or the athletic trainer
so that you know you can you can be doing
the right things and you can control the load so
the issue doesn't come back. But if the steroid shot

(02:02:29):
doesn't work, you know, now you're in a quandrant. You
know exactly you know what's the best approach to take.

Speaker 4 (02:02:37):
When when we talk in baseball nowadays, the universal d
H it's not just the American League anymore. You see
times and we even saw with Spencer Steer he was
able to swing, but he's not able to throw. Is
that something that's pretty common is that you obviously think
of the shoulder and the movement and think, well, if
he can if he can hit, he should be able
to throw, or vice versa. Do you see this a

(02:02:59):
lot though, where you may be able to swing about,
but you still can't throw where you.

Speaker 3 (02:03:04):
Need to be?

Speaker 14 (02:03:05):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (02:03:05):
Absolutely, because that swing is within your ninety degree range
or lower. When you look at your shoulder and you're
you're not talking, you're not putting that throwing arm back
into that extreme extra rotation position when you're swinging. Who
was it two years ago or last year? The kid
for the Dodgers of cush oh a man I can't

(02:03:29):
pronounce his name o Tomy, guys are a lot better
than night. Yeah. Remember he had his problem and they
let him come back and hit, yep, and he you know,
he hit early in the season and then they finally
brought him back to throw. So you know, there's a
good example of where hitting is. You know, something that
you can mechanically get them back to safer than you

(02:03:50):
can with with throwing it.

Speaker 4 (02:03:54):
It's just it's one of those things for the Reds,
you wait and you hope for the best. With such
a key part of this roster and forward that is
Bob man Jean from the University of Cincinnati and Novacare Bob,
enjoy your trip to Oklahoma State, Tony.

Speaker 7 (02:04:08):
I think thanks a lot, Tony, and you guys have
a good weekend. And I keep hoping that you guys
can get the Bengals on the right track. And you know,
I just need to quarterback. You guys need more than that.

Speaker 4 (02:04:22):
You know, when when this season ends, that's it's sunny
out today, the weather's getting a little bit warmer. When
the basketball season does finally end, after they make the run,
they win the Big Twelve Tournament, they do what they
do in March Madness. We're gonna get on a golf
course and maybe do one of these segments live from whole,
like number eight on a course.

Speaker 7 (02:04:40):
I'm in. Let me, let me tell you, let me
get through this season and I'll meet you down at
Triple Crowd and we'll do we'll do a radio show
from the eighth to the ninth hour.

Speaker 3 (02:04:51):
I love it. I love it.

Speaker 4 (02:04:52):
That is a Bob Bob Manjeen Bob. Thank you so much. Well,
we'll talk again next week. Enjoy the weekend.

Speaker 7 (02:04:58):
I have a great day, Tony.

(02:05:20):
winding things down here on a on a Friday afternoon.
The Mullager Show is going to be next. He'll join
us in just a bit for quick hits on SINCY
three to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 9 (02:05:30):
Why Dight, Which players will come? Which players will go?

Speaker 54 (02:05:34):
This is a look at the free agent frenzy, presented
by Stone Statements Bringing your Dream Kitchen to Life. Also
brought to you by Richter and Philip s Jewelers, Plumb
Dyke Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Raids, and World's Hitching Post. No,
here's Mouegger.

Speaker 55 (02:05:51):
A year ago, the Bengals had a plan to make
their safety play better in twenty twenty four, bringing in
Geno Stone and old friend Von Bellen free agency. The
plan didn't work, so a major point of emphasis this
offseason should.

Speaker 9 (02:06:03):
Again be safety.

Speaker 55 (02:06:04):
Will the Bengals cut Stone after just one season or
will he get a second chance in Cincinnati under new
defensive coordinator Al Gold. Cutting Stone would save the Bengals
money and they could use that cash to find his replacement. Regardless,
the Bengals safety play must get better, and improving that
position could be a major focus of the Bengals and
free agency.

Speaker 54 (02:06:24):
For more on the free agent frenzy, keep it here
on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 10 (02:06:31):
Bet like the Pros with the world's largest sports here
in fifteen thirty.

Speaker 4 (02:06:46):
Welcome back since E three to sixty. ESPN fifteen thirty.
Cincinnati Sports Station, a service of Penn Station. I misspoke
at the end of that conversation with Bob and Geane.
By the way, it's a Chad Brundle's gonna join us
in just a couple of minutes for quick hits. Before
we get to any of that, we have an update

(02:07:07):
Austin on the Cincinnati Reds.

Speaker 3 (02:07:09):
Yeah, Ton's canceled the ultra rare Spring training Arizona rainout, rainout.
We heard Jeff earlier say had been raining there all day,
backing in from Goodyear, and they are going to cancel
today's game between the Reds and the Giants. I think
more than anything, the Giants are just a little bit

(02:07:30):
scared and we're twenty days away from Openy Day they
play the Giants, so they don't want anything to do
it to do with it. So it is canceled due
to rain. But tone that's not going to stop us.
If the game was being played today, here's how they'd
line out. It was supposed to be Freedol McClain, de
la Cruz, Wow Hayes, Lux Stevenson, Freeley, Strand Trevino with

(02:07:53):
Nick Martinez on the mound. That's tough, but it is
not going to happen today. However, we have some news
talked about it. Earlier, Terry Francona announced that Hunter Green
will be the opening day starting pitcher. He also announced
the rest of the starting rotation. It's going to be

(02:08:16):
if you can give me just a moment here because
I apparently closed it. The rest of the starting rotation
will be Nick Lodolo, So it's Green, Lodolo, Martinez Singer
and the fifth starter is to be announced, but officially Green, Lodolo,
Martinez Singer will be the first four in the reds rotation. Okay,

(02:08:37):
we break camp. We'll find out who the fifth guy's
going to be.

Speaker 4 (02:08:39):
Before we break and get the Chad Brendle. What is
the update with our poll question results today? Revivefitnessystems dot com.
Poll question is simple today, should the Bengals trade Trey Hendrickson?
Final results? Seventy one percent say yes they should, So
we'll see what happens. There was a report for Jeff Howe,

(02:09:01):
I believe of the athletic Jeff who said that the
Bengals are receiving significant interest in Trey Hendrickson, who says
it sounds like the possibility exists for a win win
outcome for both sides.

Speaker 3 (02:09:16):
Okay. Jeff Howe, NFL National Insider for the Athletic.

Speaker 4 (02:09:19):
Shout out to Jeff, Shout out to Chad Brundle, he said,
when we get back for quick hits ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 18 (02:09:26):
KWY, Cincinnati, make us the number one pre set on
your car radio and on the free new it improved
iHeartRadio app Free never.

Speaker 44 (02:09:33):
Sounded so good. ESPN fifteen thirty from the schmid Heating
temp Star Weather Center. Here's your forecast.

Speaker 3 (02:09:40):
This report is sponsored by True Grain.

Speaker 45 (02:09:42):
Expect mostly cloudy skuys today with a quick chance for
a spotty shower. Even as you head into the evening hours,
you have some rain and drizzle stick around. Tempters will
drop down to the mid thirties tonight. Chances for rain
overnight but dry. For your Saturday, tempters climb to the
upper forties. That's your nine first warning forecast. I'm meteorologist
Cameron Harden.

Speaker 3 (02:10:01):
We're back in the Miller.

Speaker 1 (02:10:02):
Three sixty continues on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.

Speaker 9 (02:10:08):
It's time for Cincy three sixty. Quick Hits on ESBN
fifteen thirty is.

Speaker 3 (02:10:12):
Looking for Mo. Moe's not here.

Speaker 4 (02:10:14):
Mo's in for Lance, which means Chad is in for Mo,
which means this is quick Hits with Chad Brendle on
cinty three sixty. Thanks to our friends at Penn Station.

Speaker 56 (02:10:22):
Hi, Chad, Moe is making me a lot of money
in March, Yes, February. In March, I'm doing pretty well.

Speaker 3 (02:10:29):
There is a there're so goned since the bearcast don't
play in March. There he is.

Speaker 4 (02:10:36):
There's so few things Chad to talk about. How he
wonders why UC fans hate him. Message boards are already
firing up. Yeah, I'm gonna start in Austin no more three.

Speaker 3 (02:10:45):
Hey, I made you some money with some of those
message board posts last year too. He uh.

Speaker 4 (02:10:50):
Obviously there's no Reds game. But the West Miller conversation
became a story today. Trey Hendrickson became a story yesday.
Look will you be doing today? I have a question,
why did the Bengals never set the market? Why is
it always somebody else sets the market and then the
Bengals have to react like haven't we had since beginning

(02:11:14):
of January that we knew all of this stuff was happening.
And now they're they're they're quote unquote not close with Jamar.
They're not close with t if you're listening to some
of the national reports, and they've allowed Trey to seek
a trade. We've already seen justin Jefferson set the market

(02:11:34):
and that is gonna be And now Mason Crosby not
only affected Trey Hendrickson, but I think it all he
is now I think the highest paid or Max Crosby,
he is now the highest paid non quarterback. So again
they let somebody come over the top and dictate their terms.

(02:11:55):
Why why again for a for a franchise that the
uh uh story on them as their penny pinchers, their
decisions cost them.

Speaker 3 (02:12:07):
Money, a lot of money.

Speaker 56 (02:12:10):
They're the worst penny pinchers in the history of penny pinching.

Speaker 4 (02:12:14):
If you just if you want to criticize, I think
the Bengals and the Trey Hendrickson move.

Speaker 3 (02:12:20):
Is we talked about this for weeks. They weren't gonna
be able to afford but they can't.

Speaker 4 (02:12:25):
But the value if you really dive into Trey Hendrickson
against the run and.

Speaker 56 (02:12:29):
You know, you know what he is, Tony. I'm gonna
make this comparison today. He's a great three point shooter. Yeah,
that doesn't rebound, doesn't play defense, it doesn't go into
But boy, there's value in that, right, there's value in
being a forty four percent three point shooter. But it's
a limited value you because you don't do anything else.

Speaker 4 (02:12:48):
The problem is if they were proactive in signing the
players when they identify as doaboy, then guess what t
Higgins was a discount. Chase last year would have been
the biggest discount in the history of the NFL. Trey Hendrickson,
you could probably got him last year around twenty seven,
twenty eight when he was unhappy.

Speaker 3 (02:13:07):
What I mean, Penny Pincher's in the history.

Speaker 4 (02:13:09):
At Penny They wait and now you're gonna pay with
Jamar Chase, You're gonna pay with t Higgins. You're paying
with Trey Hendrickson because you can't afford it. Justify that, Yeah,
you moved. You didn't do it with Jesse Bates when
you should have, and you told people when you didn't
do it with Jesse Bates, it's because you can't do
Jesse Bates and then pay t Higgins that money and
then that contract, and now you've let t Higgins get
to his second franchise tag. Yes, that that is the

(02:13:31):
argument against the Bengals. Yeah, I don't think the argument
is the wrong decision in allowing Trey Hendrickson to pursue.

Speaker 56 (02:13:37):
A Trey Hendrickson is not a thirty three million dollars
thirty five million dollar defensive end, correct.

Speaker 3 (02:13:43):
Is he a great pass rusher? Yes?

Speaker 56 (02:13:46):
I heard Charlie say Trey wonders why he didn't have
more like juice in the market, Like why why his
name's not out there more? Because he's one dimensional. All
those other guys are freaks across the field. Would you
say he had thirty three tackles, Yeah, seventeen and a
half of them sacks.

Speaker 3 (02:14:03):
Yep.

Speaker 56 (02:14:03):
You should luck into more than fourteen tackles if you subtract,
because the sacks are in the tackle number. If you
subtract the sacks from that, he did nothing. He did
nothing to help this defense. That's part of why the
defense was so bad is because your anchor was a

(02:14:23):
one dimensional guy.

Speaker 3 (02:14:26):
It is.

Speaker 4 (02:14:27):
It's baffling, and I know that's a topic of conversation,
are you going to spend time today on the West
Miller conversation that I don't think should have been a conversation,
but it should be.

Speaker 56 (02:14:38):
Here's what I think they messed up. Here's what you
needed to clarify to fans. Fans are emotional. Fans are
sure in the moment because guess what they spend their
money in the moment. This is not a knock on fans.
This is an understanding of a fans perspective. What should
have been said is we hired Wes when we were
in the American We made a commitment to each other

(02:15:00):
going into the Big Twelve that if they were wildly successful,
he would stay committed to Cincinnati and if the road
was a little bumpy, we would stay committed to him
for a period of time. I don't think two years
is that period of time. And Tony, they haven't been
bad like It's not like they've bottomed out in the
Big Twelve to where you have to fire a coach.

(02:15:23):
They haven't been good enough. Did this year fail to
meet expectations? Absolutely, But I don't think it was such
a colossal like, oh my god, that you fire him.
So that message wasn't conveyed. The only message that was
conveyed is that he's coming back, which we knew.

Speaker 4 (02:15:42):
Nobody thought Wes was getting fired, right, That's why I
thought this to be a little bit off brand. Yeah, no,
I didn't. I never once thought Wes won't be the coach.
I thought there will be pressure on Wes going into
next year. Sure, absolutely, But I felt it unnecessary to
come out and say, yeah, he's our guy when the
season's not even over. And I think for many people

(02:16:03):
that was expected. Yeah, I mean, look, I see it recruiting.
I see it as a recruiting tactic. Now against you, Well, yeah,
why would you commit there? Yeah, if you bade you,
he's gone and then you got to go through a
coaching change.

Speaker 56 (02:16:17):
Just don't say, don't make it a narrative. I agree,
I wouldn't have done it that way.

Speaker 4 (02:16:21):
How much will you spend on Tanner Hudson today being
back for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 56 (02:16:24):
Most of our three is going to be on Tanner
Hudson and his impact.

Speaker 3 (02:16:28):
Thank you that was lost in the shuffle. It is
what got lost Tanner Hudson, Tanna Hudson. Yeah, I said
thank you to Chad.

Speaker 56 (02:16:35):
Yeah, Auston, will you join me five point thirty to
talk Tanner Hudson.

Speaker 3 (02:16:40):
I wish I could, but I'll probably be talking about
rock records or movies or something at five thirty down
the hall.

Speaker 10 (02:16:47):
On top.

Speaker 3 (02:16:48):
That wouldn't you, Yes, I would absolutely.

Speaker 4 (02:16:50):
That's rare. That's not always the guest man, Mark, let
me write this down. Three is anyone? Do you have
any guests today? Jeff ff Car Okay, it's going to
be joining me to talk some reds. I didn't It's Friday.
There's a lot to talk about. I didn't think we
needed to go.

Speaker 56 (02:17:06):
Get no jobs and got no jobs and got Tony.

Speaker 3 (02:17:11):
I'm just stealing boxes phone. I'm not trying to build
a clubhouse. Austin has no idea what we're talking about,
no clue, no idea. You guys never seen a movie
in his life. Did you see Rick Patino and Saint
John's went on? Jimmy Fallon.

Speaker 4 (02:17:23):
I saw the clip on TikTok the so I don't
know if I'd have been doing it yet, getting down nets. Yeah,
playing the attention. That's a kiss of death. But hey,
he's Rick Patino. It's the best coach of my life.

Speaker 3 (02:17:35):
He's drawn some attention in the past, the best.

Speaker 56 (02:17:37):
College coach in my life. How long was the clip?
Fifteen seconds?

Speaker 3 (02:17:41):
Oh? Man, is it longer than fifteen seconds? Did you
see it all? You see that third? Dan Horde?

Speaker 4 (02:17:52):
Did you see the Canadian olympian that's now on the
FBI's most wanted list.

Speaker 3 (02:17:57):
No, I did not see that.

Speaker 4 (02:17:58):
Now the problem is I I don't have it in
front of me, but I thought it was one of
the best quotes. I'll read it to you to kind
of cap off today's show. Ryan Wedding was a Canadian
in the two thousand and two Olympics. He finished twenty
fourth in the parallel giant slalom. Parallel giant slalom, I'm
very huge. Yes, that's probably where you remember the name from.
There's now a ten million dollar reward for information leading

(02:18:19):
to his arrest for running a multinational drug trafficking network
and orchestrating multiple murders. This is a quote from the
assistant director of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office at
Keith Davis. Wedding went from shredding powder on the slopes
to distributing powder on the streets.

Speaker 3 (02:18:35):
I mean strong. That guy should be writing newspaper headlines.

Speaker 4 (02:18:40):
How do you not win with that? If anyone has
any information regarding Ryan wedding, give it to me first
and we'll split that ten million dollar bond.

Speaker 3 (02:18:49):
I've I was.

Speaker 56 (02:18:50):
Looking for his number for different reasons, but we're done.

Speaker 3 (02:18:54):
I've had a rough.

Speaker 4 (02:18:57):
Brendle is next on ESBO fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Have a great weekend thanks to our callers, listeners, talkbackers,
and sponsors and our guest.

Speaker 56 (02:19:06):
Of course, that's responsible for the terrorists. That's what yep,
that's take it down. Take it down the hall, Austin.
You got that for the next three hours.

Speaker 4 (02:19:15):
