Speaker 2 (00:20):
Good afternoon, Happy Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Thank you for joining in to the latest edition of
Cincy three sixty. You're listening to on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station or via the iHeart Radio app. It's
via the iHeart Radio app. Leave us a talkback. We'll
get to those an hour number two and best talk
back of the week one a SINCEI Shorts gift card
on Friday. Thanks to our friends here in nour number
one at Skyline Chili for bringing you another edition to
(00:43):
Cincy three sixty. On today's edition of since E three
to sixty our three, we're gonna spend some time talking
about the UC Bearcats. We got the opportunity to get
with Scott Sadderfield, the head coach of the UC Bearcats
football squad, as they get ready for their spring showcase.
I guess we call it now not a spring game,
(01:05):
but a spring showcase. Comes up this Saturday. It's a
busy day UC football. This Saturday. It got the Spring Showcase.
There's a UC baseball game and then Bearcats in the
ballpark at a great American ballpark Saturday night will be
there as well as the Reds take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.
So that is happening. So we'll talk to Scott Sanderfield
(01:27):
about that. And there has been a ton happening from
a transfer portal standpoint for the UC Bearcats, and up
to this point it has been more going than coming.
Josh Reid, Dan Skillings Tyler, Betsy Arrington, Page, Dylan Mitchell,
(01:47):
Ravon Griffith, and JJ Rembert freshman walk on point guard
have all entered the transfer portal. What gives what's happening
with UC basketball? Kegan Nickoson of Bearcat Journal dot com
will help us out in our number three. I'll talk
to Moeger about this as well, because I know I
(02:09):
took a little pushback yesterday on social media. I mentioned
that I thought Dylan Mitchell was the most important player
to get back for the Cincinnati Bearcats, and I explained
why because of what he offers to the team. And
I know some disagree with that. But between Reed Skillings,
Betsy Page, Mitchell, and Ravon Griffith, this team has a
(02:32):
ton of holes. And I know they have a new GM,
and I know Wes Miller is being tasked with with
filling those holes. But there is a lot a lot
of eyes right now on UC men's basketball. Xavier has
made another edition in the portal. We'll talk about that
as we go today. A little bit of Bengals, a
(02:53):
little bit of NFL conversation, but for the most part
here in our number one especially, we'll take your phone
calls at five to one, fifteen thirty and we'll also
talk about what's going on with the Cincinnati Reds.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
For the fourth time.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Already this season this season, they've taken part in a
one nothing game. Last night, they finally were on the
winning end of a one zero game. Reds beat the
Giants one nothing one night after beating the Giants thanks
to Hunter Green and his brilliance in a two to
(03:33):
nothing victory. So back to back shutouts for the starters
and the bullpen for the Cincinnati Reds. They have officially
won their first series of the season. They moved to
five and seven on the year. Last night Nick Lodolo
fantastic three hits.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
A walk, three strikeouts.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
His era over three starts is now zero point nine six.
Before we go any further, well we'll walk. Come in, Austin.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
How are you? How are you doing? I'm good to
walking you in first? Before I just throw it to you? Here?
Am I crazy?
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Before? Can I ask? How are you?
Speaker 3 (04:15):
I'm good? All right, I'm good. The portals got me
in a bad way.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
You know. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
I I thought yesterday I'm weird in a sense that
I don't mind cutting the lawn. And so I was
getting ready to cut the lawn yesterday posted a picture.
I was in a good mood because I was cutting
the grasscer and yeah, and there is something about the
lawnmower sitting all off season and with like three pools
that started back up. And I don't have a new mower.
(04:42):
It's a it's a bet, it's a beater. It's an
old lawnmower. And the thing started up, purred like a kitten. Now,
some white smoke came out of it, which I didn't
know what to do, so I just let it go
for a minute. But in the time it took me
and I don't have a big yard. And the time
it took me to cut the yard. I saw the
it was about Matt McClain going to the IL and
(05:02):
I saw Dylan Mitchell at ender the transfer portal. We
can't even cut the grass anymore without news breaking anymore. Man,
So outside of that grass got cut, looks good. I'm
a little distraught about the portal, but the reds helped
me out last night. And uh, Nick Loodolo did it?
Am I wrong to think that Lodolo has an ERA
(05:25):
under one over three starts and I don't think he's
been on top of his a game in any of them,
Like he's been great, yeah, but I still feel like
he was maybe searching for it a little bit or
struggling with some location. Like I don't feel like he's
even been at his best, and through three starts he's
got an ERA south of one.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
There was a couple of innings last night where it
felt like, Okay, he found it, he got in a
rhythm and he was a little bit more aggressive. But
I think there has been some times and this I
think speaks to the talent of Nicklodola on how good
his stuff is is Like there's been times when I
I'm not sure he's fully confident in what he has
(06:03):
that night, and so because of it, he'll tend to
nibble a little bit and sometimes fall behind. But when
he's confident and he's going at hitters and he feels
like he has his best stuff, he's hard to pitch
or it's hard to hit. Man.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
I just think of their one two combination right now.
I saw that no one has even gotten a hit
off Hunter greens slider yet this year. I saw that
statistic yesterday. But when you've got Hunter from the right
side throwing one hundred hundred and one, the off speed
is there, and then you switch it to the left
side with what Nick Lodolo brings to the table, that
is a tough one to two combination for an opposing
(06:40):
team to face in a series. As of right now,
the Red starting rotation has an ERA of two point
five seven, that's good for number one in Major League Baseball.
The team ERA is two point eighty three, that's good
for third in Baseball. Sticking to the theme of pitching,
(07:01):
I thought it was awesome last night what Graham Ashcraft
was able to do for this team. We talked about
Graham Ashcraft a lot we've talked about as a starter.
It felt like last night I saw him in the
role that he's meant to be with this team. Two
great innings, high leverage innings that he was asked to
go in again in a close game, and he gave
(07:23):
up one hit, he struck out two. I thought Graham
Ashcraft was awesome last night.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Austin, he was, you know, I think there was a
couple of times too where it was he was a
little amped up, maybe a little too amped up, had
a couple that almost went to the backstop. If he
can learn how to harness that a little bit, and
it's not taking away from what he did last night,
but I know there was that article written about how
much the adrenaline like fuels him and how much he
(07:47):
was feeding off that, and how he couldn't go to
sleep the other night after being in late in the game.
If he's able to and I know Jeff Brantley was
talking about this on TV last night, if he's able
to learn how to harness that and use that as
a weapon, he could be a big time, big time
guy at the back end of the bullpen. And the
other guy, Emilio Pagan. Yeah, he's looked pretty good about
(08:09):
a seven ninth. Yeah, he's looked pretty dog gone good
through his first few appearances of the year. Now, those
balls were hit pretty well off of Pegan. But right at, guys,
and I think you feel pretty good about the the
bullpen right now. I think when you look at today,
you know Hunter goes eight and two thirds two nights ago,
Lodolo goes six last night. It's Ashcraft and Pegan, and
(08:32):
so you basically have the entire bullpen at your disposal,
at your disposal today and a chance to sweep the
San Francisco Giants, and especially with an off day tomorrow,
Terry Francona can manage this game very aggressively with the
bullpen if he needs to, and can have a quick
hook on Nick Martinez if he has to. So it
(08:53):
should be. It makes it really interesting the way that
Francona chooses to manage today's game with the flexibility the
Reds have in the bullpen.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
We'll get more into the game itself as we get
into the hour here. I do find it interesting, Austin,
you mentioned Nick Martinez. He takes the ball at three
forty five today, what do you make of Nick Martinez
his first couple starts, because he was perfect through a
portion of his of a start, but his ERA still
sits above just below six. He's been good early, it's
(09:24):
fallen apart a little bit. What do you make of
the importance in a start today He's going against Justin Vernland,
WHO'SRA has six point one four. What have you seen
or what do you want to see more from Nick Martinez?
Speaker 4 (09:36):
A little bit more efficiency, you know, more than anything.
Quick outs, attack hitters, go right after it. Ninety two
pitches last time out in just four and two thirds
against Milwaukee. He was just they put together some good
at bats against him. He had eighty three in those
six innings against San Francisco and it wasn't all his
fault the way things went, but he kind of fell
(09:58):
off once he got later in that game. So for me,
it's just, you know, can you be efficient early and
give yourself a chance late where you're not going through
these long at bats where guys are seeing every pitch
you have and how you're trying to get them out
and over and over and over again, you have them
guessing into the fourth fifth inning to where you can
(10:18):
still dip into a few of the pitches you haven't
shown as much, or an out pitch that you haven't
gone to yet in the game. So he's been fine,
he hasn't been fantastic, and maybe some familiarity with San
Francisco will help him out a little bit because offensively
they're just struggling right now.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
Yeah, we'll talk about the offense as we go. Mention,
Justin Farlander has not been great this year either. Reds
have already seen him once this year. Have you seen
the statistic floating around from an NL central standpoint about
runs that the pitching staffs have given up?
Speaker 4 (10:50):
I have.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Saint Louis who beat Paul Skeins yesterday. I think beat
up on Paul Skans a little bit.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
I want to say three of the five career losses
for Paul Skians have been the crazys of the Saint
Louis Cardinals.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
The Saint Louis Cardinals from a pitching standpoint, have given
up seventy two runs this year. Milwaukee has given up
sixty five, The Pirates have given up sixty three, The
Cubs have given up sixty two. The Reds have given
up thirty eight runs this year. That is almost unbelievable
to think about. And it'll be something we discussed later
(11:24):
in the hour. That they have given up thirty eight
runs and they're still five and seven. What that means
for the offense. Should we be patient with the offense?
Do they need to be aggressive when it comes to
the offense? Does Elie need to be hitting in a
different spot. We'll touch on all of that over the
course of today. Not only did Skeans lose yesterday Austin,
the crowd was not great. Did you see that they're
(11:47):
going to give away tickets free tickets to people that
were at the game yesterday?
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Yeah, I believe in Pittsburgh below forty degrees at the
start of the game. It might have been below thirty
degrees at the start of that game last night. I
watched a little bit of it and it just looked
as didn't look like a place you wanted to be.
So there's also this thing. I don't know what the
the announced attendance was. I'll see if I can find
that really quick, but just watching it, it was, uh,
(12:11):
there wasn't a lot of people there. And the Yankees
and Tigers they moved those games up to the middle
of the day the last couple of days because it
was twenty four degrees in Detroit, so they did it
in the middle of the day. The announced attendance at
P and C Park last night was eight ninety one.
I think it was closer to two hundred and ninety one. Yeah,
(12:32):
you mentioned yesterday moved the game up. Tigers beat the
Yankees five nil. Guardians too straight for the Tigers. How
about that Guardians blank? The White Sox won nothing. The
Mets were winners yesterday. The Nationals beat the Dodgers back
to back games. It's right, Nationals win eight to two.
I try to tell people, Yeah, Nationals are gonna be better
than you think. Now they're five and six. Sure, but
(12:54):
when you play against the Dodgers the way they have
and perform the way they have, it's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Braves came from behind to beat the Philadelphia Phillies. Cubs
beat the Rangers, Brewers beat up on the Rockies, and
Kyle Freeland yesterday Diamondbacks over the Orioles.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Like it's been a while since Kyle Freeland put together
a good performance.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
You know, I actually saw leading into yesterday he'd actually
put together a couple of good starts his opening day start,
he went six and didn't allow a run.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Okay, my apologies to Kyle Freed.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Against the Phillies, went seven, gave up three runs, but
did go six and a third yesterday giving up five runs.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
You'll take seven and three runs.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Uh, shutout in Philly.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
The home the strategy continues to be fantastic. The A's
again last night with a big one.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Shout out to our guy Mike, who after his appearance yesterday.
From what I'm understanding, Uh, there are some questions we
got to ask Mike next time we can talk to him.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Can we talk about this for a second, Yes, because
everybody's tweeting at us and saying they want to know
more about Mike and Mike's story and why he was
allegedly in prison.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Yeah, he said, no idea said.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
He was in prison. Do we really want to know?
I do I have to know because I think, you know,
Mike is generally seen as a good guy. Do we
really want to know why he was incarcerated?
Speaker 3 (14:10):
I want to give him the opportunity if he wants
to share it, that he can, but if not, he
doesn't have to. Yeah, I mean that can change the
way you view a person, sure, and I don't know
that it matters at this point, but do we need
to know?
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Good question.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
We'll leave that up to him. One other major piece
of news and I.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Only say curiosity killed the cat.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
It did, but the cat had nine lives. Well, come
on with it then, I am so excited for time.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
By the way, did you see last night what happened
at the UH towards the end of the Lakers and
Oklahoma City Thunder game.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
I did so.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Luca gets teed up his second tea of the game.
He gets tossed. The ref thought he was yelling at him,
when in fact, Luca was yelling at a fan, and
when you see the replay, you can see the fans
standing up and yelling back at Luke. He was just
right behind where the referee was. Complete misunderstanding. Luca gets tossed.
They proceed to lose the game. Insane. But tonight Austin
(15:11):
it's his return to Dallas, and Dallas has made like
shirts like thank you Luca that got them all throughout
the arena. They're the ones that moved on from.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Him, not the marketing team. I think the marketing team
is probably doing everything they can to get back at
uh Nico Harrison because he screwed them more than he
screwed just about anybody else. Am I wrong on that?
Marketing and Communications lost their best guy? Yes, thanks Tonico Harrison.
So I'd be sticking in his face telling you this night.
(15:42):
I can't wait to see that return tonight. I can't
wait to see how many purple and gold Luca Laker
jerseys are there.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
I can't wait to see how many times he shoots
the ball.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
And I bet they are going to I saw his
over under for points was thirty and a half over,
and I bet the fans in that building are not
going to be cheering for the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
No.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
Never did you know that Luka don Chicks since he
came into the league, has more technical fouls than anybody
in the NBA. I could believe that seventy three technicals
since he entered the league.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
I can believe that that's not good.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
I mean, we want to give Draymond a bad Yeah,
he was like that in Dallas, man, he really was.
I thought it was always in Dallas, the way he
handed himself, I thought it could have been better. But man,
he's such a talent and I'm gonna take the over
tonight for what Luke.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
Twenty nine to twelve run. Okay, Se just decided to
start playing when he went out. Yeah, okay, so you
could tell. Okay, see, he's just kind of getting ready
for the postseason.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Speaking of getting ready for the postseason, Jason Tatum hits
a three to send the game into overtime against the
Knicks last night.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
They went on to win.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Christaps Porzingis dropped thirty four points in that game.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
I have to ask Mo if he is now kind
of rooting against the Knicks to get Malone so that
Tom Thibodeau will be fired.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
What's Tim's guy going on with his hair?
Speaker 4 (17:03):
Dude, I don't know what it isn't like that there's.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Like seven pieces of hair left. But he there's a
little product in array night.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
He puts a little something, a little product that slicks
it back.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
I was I was looking at that last night, and
I'm like, I just don't get it.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
Tibbs is also a guy who has not benefited, in
my mind, from coaches going casual on the sidelines. He
was a dude who looked a lot better and a
sup respectfully, of course, Tis let's tink of not though,
because he ruined the bulls for me, ran all those
dudes into the ground, Joe keem Blue while dang Derrick
Rose he killed those guys.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Before we get to a break, Uh, do you want
to tell folks about this first segment and about our
poll question today?
Speaker 4 (17:43):
Everything we've been talking about today, Tony. In this first segment,
this review of the top sports stories, ton that's brought
to you by Claus Roofing Systems of Cincinnati. You're trusted
local roofing and gutter company. You can check him out
at KRS. Since he that's with a y, since he
went a dot com our Revive Fitness Systems poll question today.
(18:04):
This is brought to you by Revivefitnessystems dot Com and
coach PJ. Street and blatantly stolen from Joe Daniman on
our show yesterday, who told us to ask Charlie Goldsmith
this next time we see him. I thought to myself,
I'm just going to schedule this for a pole question
right now. Which will happen first? Ellie dal Lacruz wins
n L MVP or Hunter Green wins NL. Cy Young
(18:28):
overwhelmingly ninety one percent say, Hunter Green wins the nl
Cy Young That comes off another rough outing for Ellie
last night where I think he's struggling to get to
those pitches inside and he needs to be a little
more aggressive early in the counts because you know, he's
he kind of got this reputation through the first month
and a half of spring training and end of the
(18:50):
season that he's patient and he's not swinging stuff, so
guys are taking advantage of that. They're going after him
and getting ahead of the count early. Ellie, I feel
like needs to be a little bit more aggressive, Yeah,
on those pitches that are in the zone early, and
we'll see if he's able to make an adjustment.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
He did that last night in the first inning and
hit a rocket, but right to the second basement. Yeah,
and then kind of went back to the patient. So, uh,
we'll talk about the offense, we'll talk about Matt McClain,
we'll talk we'll hear from Terry Francona, and we'll talk
to you five one, three seven, fifteen thirty phone calls
as well. It's Cincy three sixty thanks to Skyline Chiley
on ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati Sports Station goes and.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Swung off by Ramos, took the right field.
Speaker 6 (19:30):
There goes Freiley back to the warning.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
Track, reaching up and making the catch.
Speaker 6 (19:35):
A miracle catch by Jake Frayley as he dives and
falls down on the warning track, up against the padding
in a very deep part of right field.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
He saves the run and ends the inning.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Man, Jake Fraley, you bring will Benson back to the clubhouse,
little competition, Jake Fraley says, not today, Willie Beeman. Jake
Frayley had a great game last night. That catch paired
with a couple hits at the plate. That's a good
good night for Jake Frayley at the ballpark speaking a
(20:10):
good night. There's a good day happening right now. It's
Wednesday at the Masters. It's the par three challenge.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
For me.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
It's it's awesome because you kind of get to see
these guys more as than just golfers. Saw video Jordan
Speith his son, his young son hitting a t shot.
There's an important there's an interesting look going on Austin.
If you're watching any of the Masters coverage, Cam Smith
is playing today in.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Like a full suit.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
He's got like dressed pants on with a like suit
jacket unbuttoned, of course, but the suit jacket's an interesting look.
At the Masters, even if it is a Wednesday, I
think Cam looks pretty good, sharp, sharp look. He must
have a business meeting after the the the eighteen that
he's playing, or the nine, however many they play today
on Wednesday at the Masters. It looks beautiful there. The
(20:57):
weather is awesome, awesome, some stuff. We'll talk Masters tomorrow
a little bit as well. We'll get back to the
Reds in just a second. We'll talk about the offense.
We'll hear from Terry Francona. Before any of that, though,
We've we've got Mike calling, and uh, I think a
lot of people are interested in what he's got to
say today.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Mike, what's up?
Speaker 7 (21:16):
Oh yeah, Transparency can really bother. Mike wants transparency, and
then when you give them a little well, I don't know,
maybe we misjudges, man, or shut up, you know, I don't.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Care what you think. People.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
People were blowing up the social media timelines yesterday after
you spoke with Mo. They want more of the backstory.
They want to know more about what happened. And I said, well,
that's on Mike. If he ever wants to indulge in
or divulge into to what happened. But uh, you were,
you were quite the news story over night, Mike.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
Mike, we lost Mike, We lost Mike. Oh boy, now
that's twice. Now that his call has dropped.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Maybe Mike doesn't want to talk about.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
It, and if see if this should be him. But
are you back, Mike.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
Yeah, I don't know what's going on. And my call
failed twice in the last few minutes, and I don't
know why.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
All good, All good? What's up? Mike?
Speaker 6 (22:17):
Very rare just.
Speaker 7 (22:17):
When I'm in the middle of that something important when
I'm talking nonsense, good too. So anyway, I get back
from NOM. I got wounded pretty bad. I told you
about that, and I got addicted.
Speaker 8 (22:30):
To the pain.
Speaker 7 (22:31):
That's in my real early twenties, you know. Finally I
got over that years ago. But when I got out
and my dad helped me get a job out of
GE and even Dale had a big plant to Aircraft
Engine Group, so I had a great job. Or if
I was on cloud nine, I got my wife to
be slipped over the mountain in Anderson, and GE offered
(22:52):
me a transfer out to la After being with him
for a year, and I said, yeah, I'll go. They
paid my movement. I was just out, but they paid
my mood. That was back in the day when you
had an employee savings program. You could put in nine
percent of your gross and they'd match it in the
employee But those days are going anyway. I was riding high,
bought my first house. They had a pool and all
(23:13):
that stuff, and uh, so I could I have a
lawyer buddy out there, young lawyer, and he's telling me,
you know these ways you can work this tax thing.
You know, I've been doing it for years. I've never
gotten in any trouble. So I said, yeah, let's go
for a bump, you know. So turnout I got caught
and the first time I'd ever been in trouble for anything,
(23:33):
never have since then. Wow, And the judge gave me
a year and a day. And so let's how they
do some of these minor felonies, that's the call. Uh
And so I got sent down to Ashland, Kentucky, to
the federal prison camp. There's no fences around it or anything.
(23:54):
You can walk away if you want to. They have
them all over the country because they know if you
walk away, it still end up getting yourself. It was
get sent back and sure front of skateuitars. So that's
that's what happened.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
I never knew that.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
That's what Oh I tell you. Well, I don't belave
it around.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
I'm glad. I'm glad the listeners know. Now what happened
to your lawyer? Did he get in trouble too?
Speaker 7 (24:22):
Nope? Never did. Never. He went on to be super sick.
But no, I didn't implicate him. There's no way I
was going to do that.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
He didn't make me do it.
Speaker 7 (24:32):
He suggested I do it. He didn't make me put
a gun to my head. And he was a good guy.
I still talked to him all the time. Wow, great
dun family, great wonderful gun. Uh So so anyway, yeah,
the uh I know how it came up. Last night
Moe was telling somebody about the home dog strategy.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Yes, and it's been successful.
Speaker 7 (24:53):
So I said, well, I can't take credit pool credit
for it because I learned it from an whole Italian
racketeer from Detroit who was my bunkie.
Speaker 9 (25:01):
You know.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
It was like college doors where he had a cube. Yeah,
he had a bunk and a lower bunk and you
come and go. There's no doors on the pubes or anything.
It's all open air. It's you know, it's not even
like being it's not like being in and uh in
one of those camps like you went to in college,
probably where you go for your meals, you know. And
(25:22):
they had all got to support and had a little
golf for a little mini golf course out there at tennis.
So it wasn't that me And.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Did your did your bunk? Did Does he know anything
about the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa?
Speaker 6 (25:38):
No? I never.
Speaker 7 (25:39):
This guy was something else.
Speaker 5 (25:41):
Let me tell you.
Speaker 7 (25:42):
His name was Vito Jackaloney. He was he was he
had been in and out of prison for thirty years.
He was in he was in with the mafia uh
in Detroit. And he was the most mild manner guy
you'd ever wanted, A very handsome guy, you know. The
older Italian man had a wood on the knee down.
Never did tell me how that happened. Moe was just
(26:04):
astounded that I didn't know more about this guy. And
but Mo doesn't know. When you go into places like that,
you automatically ask people's advice on how to act that
have been there, so that you can make sense, right,
That's what a shart prudent person would do. Well. One
of the golden rules in any of those places is
(26:24):
you don't just barge in and say, hey, well, why
are you in here for that? You can get your
butt kicked for that, Yeah, because you haven't. You haven't
armed to know about somebody's personal life when you don't
know him for a.
Speaker 8 (26:37):
Week or two.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
And then as you ease into to your relationship with
that person because you sleep in the same bunk and
stuff the same bunk, then you start talking. And some
guys are real chatty, some guys aren't. So then we
started talking about different things, and you never really talk
much about his cases. He was ready to get out
for the final time over all these years when he's
(27:00):
been in and out. And then he shared the home
dog theory with me, and I started practicing it when
I was there because I had the time. So sorry
to take up all your time, but that's the story.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
Yeah, I appreciate you for sharing, Mike. That's fascinating.
Speaker 7 (27:16):
Yeah, I mean it's it wasn't fun. I mean, it's
not fun, but I eventually got the thing expunge and
off my record, it's never never hindered me in any
way as far as the job or or anything. I
was on probation for two years when I got out,
which is kind of standard and uh, and I would
go down to Covington to the Federal probation office there
(27:40):
and you go like once a month for a while,
and then they then you come and go like maybe
every three months and then every six months as they
go to trust you and know that kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Yeah, so that's it.
Speaker 7 (27:52):
So, hey, are the bank go ahead?
Speaker 2 (27:55):
Go ahead?
Speaker 7 (27:56):
I hate to get off the seject that I'm and
guying to ask you guys, So are the Bengals resolved?
I know they're not resolved. They're not saying what their
first draft picked is. But but didn't you tell me,
as they should be able to get chea Hot Campbell
or he thinks they should.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
Yesterday we talked about it a little bit because mel
Kiper's mock draft had them getting ge Hot Tampbell at
number seventeen, and it brought up the conversation about how
good of a fit that he would be with the
Cincinnati Bengals and kind of encompassing what they need. But yeah,
I think a lot of people would have him on
the radar at number seventeen.
Speaker 7 (28:33):
Well that sounds good to me. So maybe maybe I
get I'll get lucky and I was right about something
for a change or anyway, I gotta go. Thanks Mike,
all these things out of my arm. So see you later.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Thanks Mike, Yes, thank you, thank you. There we go. Yeah,
ask can you get answers? When Mike was locked up incarcerated?
Now we know we get a break in. I don't
know how we transition back from that to the Reds,
but we're going to talk about the Reds offense when
(29:06):
we get back what they got going on today in
little Terry Francona all still to come since he three
to sixty thanks to Skyline Chili on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
Hey, it's Maeger having Pete Lexa. What's going on in
the NFL?
Speaker 10 (29:19):
Getting ESPN fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Welcome back since he three to sixty thanks to Skyline Chilly.
Thank you for listening on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Let's finish up with the Reds game from last night
and what else happened last night for the Cincinnati Reds
in a one nothing victory over the Giants. They did
collect Austin eight hits on the night, a two hit
(29:49):
night from Gavin Lux one of those a double, a
two hit night for from Spencer Steer who had two
doubles in the game, and Jake Fraley a two hit
night as well. Cees and Blake Dunn added a hit
as well. That adds up to eight. Let's start with
Spencer stee or Austin a good sign the last game
(30:12):
in Milwaukee. He hits the home run, follows it up.
I think we mentioned it's kind of about the time
that his spring training would be coming to an end.
From it a bat standpoint, I think everyone would would agree.
Spencer Steeer is starting to look more comfortable at the plate.
Speaker 4 (30:27):
Yeah, just looks more like himself. His swing is a
little bit more compact. He was able to hit fast balls,
he was able to hit breaking balls. He's always been
a great breaking ball hitter. Yeah, he looks more like
Spencer Steer and the Spencer stear that we are accustomed
to seeing. And so maybe it makes me feel a
little bit better because you know, he kind of talked
(30:47):
about how he just wasn't and I heard them talking
about this on the broadcast last night. His timing was
a mess because of the lack of reps and on
top of that, he just wasn't seeing the ball very well. Yeah,
now that he's seeing the ball a little bit better,
the timing is starting to come into place and you're
starting to see the results.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Good to see Jake Frailey with a multi hit game.
Great to see his play in the field, which we
talked about with the call.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Of the night.
Speaker 4 (31:12):
Best game of the year by fall.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Easily for Jake Frae easily.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
Good on Gavin Lux for being able to square a
couple up last night as well.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
The thing about Lux he hasn't been fantastic, but he
makes pitchers work, Yeah, he really does. He always puts
together are what seemed like good long at bats.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
What do we make at this point of jam Or
Candelario terrible? Two more strikeouts last night. He is hitting
one on the year. He was part of the team
last night who was two for eleven with runners in
scoring position. I had high hopes for Candelario this year.
The Reds made a huge investment into him and it
(31:53):
didn't pan out last year, and the early returns this
year Austin, I think would say the same.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what the issue is. He's
really not hitting the ball hard. He's striking out a lot.
Seems like he's always down in the count. Yeah, so
I don't know exactly what the issue is with him,
but he just kind of looks lost at the plate.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
The lone run scored yesterday was from a Jose Travino
ground out with runners on second third the Reds Austin.
They did blow some more scoring opportunities in the game,
but they were able to put more bats and our
balls in play. Eight hits is a good step forward
for this team. You could dissect every single player in
the lineup at this point. We kind of alluded to
(32:37):
it at the end of the first segment. Elie de
la Cruz averaged down to two thirty four, another strikeout
last night. He doesn't look as comfortable as he did
to start the year. And I understand that there are
ebbs and flows in baseball, And what I'm assuming is
happening is that pitchers have gotten enough film together and
(32:58):
they're making their first adjustment. And now it's on Ellie
and Chris Boleika and company to find that adjustment and
adjust accordingly, Yeah, because it feels like Ellie has not
made that adjustment yet.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
And I think the big thing is pictures are especially
when he's on left side of the plate, really kind
of going up in on his hands, and he seems
a little bit uncomfortable with that, and he seems late
on that. And I mean, I'm no expert in hitting,
but I think the goal for them there is to
(33:30):
speed him up and get him going after that ball
so that they can go back down and a way
with the off speed stuff and just create these holes
in his swing. That's how they appear to be attacking
him from my perspective, and how he's able to adjust
to that without completely losing who he is and how
he's kind of changed everything. I think that's the task
(33:51):
in front of them, is to how can I affect
and attack these pitches that they're trying to attack me
with without you know, sacrificing an other part of my
swing in another part of my game, I'll create issues elsewhere.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
I want to talk more about the build around this
team in general to start our number two when we
have some time. The other news that comes down yesterday
is Matt McClain heading to the IL. Charlie Goldsmith alluded
to this as well. I've never seen a hamstring injury
listed with the designation of a slight left hamstring injury
(34:25):
or a strain. But Matt McClain down to the injured list,
Carson Spires optioned to Triple A, Will Benson Noelvee Marte
recalled to the Reds from Triple A Louisville. Obviously, the
news here is Matt McClain. When you factor in the
shoulder and the oblique and now the hamstring, that is
(34:46):
a troubling couple events for Matt McLain obviously here for
the Reds Austin.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
No, more than anything, I just can't figure out how
why the Reds operate the way they do. Like this
dude hurt his hamstring in the Texas Rangers series, right
and continue to play and then they sat him down
and then instead of immediately putting him on the IL. Yes,
and you can retro the date to when he actually
got hurt, he pinch hit in Milwaukee and reset the clock.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
So now it's gonna be another six days before we
hear from McLean again. And I know they have an
off day tomorrow and they have an off day on Monday.
But still like that drives me nuts that they did
it that way. And maybe they did put him on
the ten day because they knew they had two off days.
I don't know, but if you know you're gonna be
(35:39):
overly cautious with a player, then just put him on
the IL.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
Frustrating And you know, I because they are overly cautious
with other players.
Speaker 4 (35:47):
They're overly cautious with everybody.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
It doesn't make sense.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
So on the IL, like the Cees last year with
the injury and they misdiagnose it, there's just more head
scratching moments. And again it's gonna cost maclay a couple
of days assuming he gets healthy.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
Yeah, and you know, I don't buy any of this,
so it's slight or whatever. It just feels like to
me they're trying to cover their ass Hamsking or make
it a little bit easier on them, you know, the
reaction to it. Maybe easier on McClain. That's fine, but
still it's just it's bothersome that that we are going
through this and everybody last night, from the Guys on TV,
(36:25):
the Guys on radio, to us today are talking about
how there was a slight designation, which doesn't happen very often.
I don't care is the guy healthier? Is he not right?
That's what it comes to.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
If if they were playing in the World Series today,
could he play? That's all I care about. Yeah, and
if he could hit? You know, we have we have
a lineup to get to. Uh, We've got some Terry
Francona audio, We've got a phone call to get to.
And I do want to talk about the young talent
(36:54):
that's on this roster and asking the Reds to do
the same thing that we asked the Bengals and other
organizations to do. We'll get to all of that when
we come back to wrap up the hour, and we'll
kick off Hour two with that as well. At Sincy
three to sixty, phone lines were open five to one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty thanks to Skyline Chili on ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 11 (37:12):
Thirty Wise Cincinnati, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Welcome back Sincy three sixty thanks to Skyline Chili. That
sounds good right now. You're listening on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station. If you're listening via the iHeartRadio app
Go ahead and get your talk back submitted. We'll get
to that an hour number two. As I mentioned, Scott
Saderfield our number three, Kegan Nicholson our number three as well,
(37:41):
before we kind of closed the book on yesterday or
last night's Red's game Austin. Do we have just a
couple minutes of what Terry Francona had to say after
the win.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
Yeah, this is from fan Duel Sports Network side of it.
Speaker 12 (37:54):
As I think that's the first one we've played I
think four already, which is astronomical for this time of year.
But you know what, we played good baseball. You know,
we we didn't smack the ball over the field, but
we had some hits. We had a couple opportunities we
didn't cash in on, but we still played good baseball
and we really pissed really really well.
Speaker 13 (38:13):
What was so impressive? What did you like the most
from Nicola dolo time?
Speaker 12 (38:17):
You know, it's funny because I think it was four innings.
I think the leoff hitter was on, which is you know,
because he didn't give up a lot, but once that happened,
and that's not normally a good recipe for keeping him
off the scoreboard. But you know his when he starts
getting that off speed, you know, change up, break the
ball under their underneath the zone under their barrel, really
makes him tough.
Speaker 13 (38:38):
How big of a play was the Freilely play? And
even even done in the night.
Speaker 12 (38:43):
There there there was I mean, in a game like that,
if one play is not made, I even go back
to the chopper over the mound. We got to double play.
It looked like it looked like Ashcraft was going to
maybe reach for it and that that might not ended well.
So there were some good things that happened to and
Freeley's play was at the top of.
Speaker 13 (39:02):
The list, but Gone has been in that position before.
How important were the two innings you got from Asscraft?
Any high leverage situation.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
You know what? How about that?
Speaker 12 (39:10):
I mean that was you know, that's a big ask
and I know he stretched out, but it's seventh and
eighth inning, it's not like it's the third and fourth.
And he threw a ton of strikes his good stuff,
He kept his composure. I mean, I feel like it's
given us another weapon which we think is going to
be really valuable.
Speaker 14 (39:29):
You guys tried to tack on didn't work out, But
do you feel like that stuff is coming well.
Speaker 12 (39:34):
I like, I like we I mean, like Jose with
the pushbun that that yeah, that's good baseball. It was
a little firm that's that's baseball too. Yeah. I just
you know, it would have been nice to get one more,
which Candy would have put the ball in play. But
that's that's the way the game is.
Speaker 5 (39:54):
We hung on.
Speaker 13 (39:56):
What kind of confidence boosts do you think it is
to for these guys to this serious one under development
and against the team of this Calvin.
Speaker 12 (40:03):
Yeah, I mean I think they're all I think they're
I think we were talking about that before. I think
they're all good. But I mean we you know, we
we needed to have some urgency and not panic, but urgency.
And I think they have felt out in the dugout
there's been really good energy and now we got to
show up in about eleven hours and then go back
and get them.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
Love that from Terry Francona, highlighting all the good from
last night's game.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
I also like.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
The the the conversation of look, we needed urgency, not panic,
but urgency. When you start the way they did, you
need to find urgency because you can't let this snowball
and get out of hand quickly. And I think talking
about that openly, you know they're talking about it behind
closed doors. I like that message from Terry Francona. They
(40:47):
do get underway here in just a couple hours. We'll
get a line up at the top of the second hour,
along with a little bit more red conversation. Before that,
Mark is hanging on here to talk to us.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
What's up? Marky on?
Speaker 5 (41:00):
Thanks and taking my call. Hey, we can win the
game one and nothing too like everybody else. Yeah, I was.
I was glad to see that last night. But I
think we differ on opinions about Matt McClain and Ellie.
I think Matt McClain when he comes back, hopefully he
comes back, I think he should be back behind Ellie.
(41:23):
I think that'll help Ellie see better pitches because Matt
McLain is more of a Polish shitter than Ellie is.
He can hit for average and he can hit for power.
In my opinion, I think you bat him third, you
can bat him first, and he'll be on base a lot,
but he won't drive in a whole lot of runs.
Leadoff hitters don't drive in a lot of runs.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
I want him.
Speaker 5 (41:47):
I want him at the plate with one or two
guys on base so he can You need guys, Tracy
Jones will say real by states you need, you need,
you need a couple of guys in that lineup that
can drive in RU.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
Sure.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
So I think with what they have on the roster now,
I think he should be bat and third when he
comes back, and put Ellie in front of him. Get
in that way. I think Ellie'll see better pitches to
hear it.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
Ye, I think that's fair. I think that's a good
point on I think the lineup construction is going to
be very interesting going forward. Mark appreciate the call as well.
Thank you. You know, if you have your perfect scenario, Austin,
and let's say McClain, Steer, Stevenson, Friedel, Ellie, all those
guys are healthy, it still makes the most sense to
(42:40):
put Ellie one or two.
Speaker 5 (42:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
I would put McClain at lead off. I would beat
Ellie second. I would put Steer third, strand fourth.
Speaker 2 (42:50):
Yeah, and then you have Stevenson, Friedel. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
It becomes a little bit more depth in the middle
and late part of that lineup. But again, getting them
healthy as one thing, I just I don't like, I
like so much already of Terry Francona. I don't like
subscribing to the idea that, no matter what, that's our
three hole hitter. Like that, to me doesn't seem to
(43:13):
make the most sense, especially especially when you start to
to look forward to players being out and not having
Matt McClain available. No disrespect at all to Blake Done.
Blake Done is not a two hole hitter, so throwing
him out there in the two hole, to me, does
(43:34):
no good for the team, and it does no good
for Ellie de la Cruz as well. And you could
all get that and know as you brought the point
of of what Gavin lux has been able to do.
I just I don't understand the rhyme or reason at
this point on why Ellie would not slide into the
two hole, especially having some guys out.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
So let's do this.
Speaker 3 (43:55):
Let's take a break, let's come back when we get
to our two Let's look at what the lineup holds today.
Let's see if Elie has moved it all in the lineup,
and let's talk about the bigger picture with the talent
that this team has and the ability or the inability
to build around it. We'll do that to kick off
hour number two next. Since he three to sixty on

Speaker 2 (44:49):
Welcome back Power two.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
Since he three to sixty thanks to Cinci Shirts on
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station. I want to get
into a little bit more about this Cincinnati Reds team
based on what we've seen from twelve games thus far
on the season, but a unique opportunity here Austin. We
talked about this in our one one to sweep a
series and two with an off day looming tomorrow, You've
(45:15):
gotten a great start eight and two thirds from Hunter Green,
Lodolo went six. Your bullpen has not been taxed at
all in this series. Now neither has San Francisco, so
both managers can can take this approach. Remember this is
a San Francisco team that came in as one of
the hottest teams in baseball. A chance to sweep and
a chance to be very aggressive for Terry Francona with
(45:36):
how you manage the bullpen with an off day tomorrow now.
Nola de Marte was called up yesterday, Will Benson was
called up yesterday. Matt McClain was sent down. We've talked
about Ellie perhaps moving to the one or two spot.
Do we have a lineup officially for today's three forty
five start?
Speaker 12 (45:53):
We do.
Speaker 4 (45:53):
Tone Here's how the Red Legs will line up going
for the series sweep over the g Man at Oracle
Put in San Francisco leading off and playing center field, TJ.
Friedel batting second and playing third base, Santiago Espinal batting third.
The shortstop Ellie de la Cruz. The cleanup batter is
(46:14):
the second baseman, Gavin Lux batting fifth, playing first base.
That's Christian In Cardossion Strand. The sixth batter is left
fielder Will Benson Hadding seventh and d hing is Spencer Steer.
The eighth batter is the right fielder Jake Fraley, and
Austin Wins gets the start behind the plate batting ninth.
That's all with Nick Martinez on the mound once more.
(46:36):
For Cincinnati, It's Freedo Espinal de la Cruz, lux Strand
Benson Steer, Freyley wins with Martinez on the mound.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
Okay, so Ellie stays in the three hole. Will Benson
makes his appearance for the first time in the lineup
this year for the Cincinnati Reds. It's Espinal in the
two hole today for the Cincinnati Reds. All interesting dynamics
to look at as we look for the Reds to
sweep a series, get themselves between back to one game
(47:07):
under five hundred, and as we've talked about, you get
the Pirates coming in this weekend, You're avoiding Paul Skeins.
All of those are good trends for the Cincinnati Reds.
Speaker 4 (47:18):
So let's when when you look at the matchups in
their careers against Justin Verlander, two Reds have homered off
of them. One of them is Santiago Espinal. Santiago Espinal
in his career against Justin Verlander, in seven at bats,
has three RBI, A home run is batting four to
(47:38):
twenty nine against Justin Verlander. Jamer Candelario, believe it or not,
is the other to have homered off of Verlander. He's
three for ten. That's an even three hundred in his
career dam against Verlander in a much needed off.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Day for Jamer Candelario. I think we're all happy he's not.
Speaker 3 (47:56):
In the line. So so here's what I want to do.
Because the pitching has been phenomenal, top rotation era in
all of baseball two five seven. Team ERA of two
eight three is good for third in all of Major
League Baseball. The offense, outside of two explosive performances where
(48:18):
they scored fourteen and eleven, has been uh, nonexistent for
the most part. And they're not the only offense in
Major League Baseball that is struggling this early in the season.
In fact, they sit twenty third in all of baseball
when it comes to team batting average. But it does
beg the question, and again I preface this with knowing
(48:41):
it's early. When you look Austin at a team with
a young core of Elie, of Hunter of Nicolodolo, you
can throw Matt McLain and Spencer Steer.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
Does it not.
Speaker 3 (48:59):
Factor in the strongest for the Reds to be more
all in now? Because we talk all the time in
sports about man. You don't want to ruin someone's prime.
You don't want to waste their prime years. We've had
this conversation a ton with the Cincinnati Bengals, right, Jamar Chase,
triple crown, Joe Burrow best statistical season, Trey Hendrickson led
the NFL in sacks, they didn't make the postseason. All
(49:21):
of that's for nothing, and the conversation around that often
rings back to wasting prime years. These are prime years
now for Hunter Green and Nick Lidolo and Ellie daily Cruz.
You don't want to waste that. You don't want to
waste Matt McClain's tenure. So do you sit here and
(49:42):
look at the start of the year Austin and say, Okay,
sometimes the hitting is just behind the pitching. Water will
find its level. We don't think this team is going
to be a great team, but it's not going to
be a team that just consistently scores zero, one or
two runs. Do you believe in that sense or do
you take the sense of man, Look, what's here, look
at the core. Why not build around it now and
(50:03):
add more bats?
Speaker 4 (50:05):
I mean, you look at both of the it's you you
feel both of those things. Like I don't trust them
to do anything. I think they're useless. They don't. They
have failed to build around players repeatedly, and I want
them to do that and they should be doing it,
but they haven't. Like how would you answer your question?
(50:29):
I everybody wants them to be aggressive. Everybody wants them
to build a good team. They don't do that well,
so you just kind of expect the worst even though
you want them to do It's the truth is in
the middle, Like, everybody wants them to be aggressive. Yeah,
obviously nobody expects them to make the right moves because
they haven't for most of the last thirty years.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
So let me let me go back to a second.
Let me start with this.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
Would you rather it be the way it is right
now to start a year or opposite where the hitting
is on fire and the pitcher's not there yet.
Speaker 4 (51:00):
I don't care. I want to win because I don't
care what it looks like.
Speaker 3 (51:03):
When it gets to talking about postseason ball, very rarely
in the postseason do you see eight to six games,
you see three to two, two to nothing, those types
of games. We've seen early on the Reds pitching staff
possesses that, and I've seen in years past. Okay, the
offense maybe goes through dry spells. I guess my biggest
(51:24):
concern is did the Reds evaluate incorrectly the progression that
these hitters would make. We've talked about bigger step for Cees,
bigger step for Steeer, McLain, Ellie, and if they take
those steps, and we hope that they take those steps,
then this is what happens when in reality, it's not
just the numbers through twelve games this year, it's a
(51:47):
majority of the numbers last year. With how bad a
lot of these hitters were, and to have the glaring
need and deficiency and not really address it, I think
makes this start even more maddening to say, well, we
thought the pitching was going to be a strength, and
my gosh, it's been a major strength. But the hitting.
(52:07):
I didn't think they were going to be this bad hitting.
I don't think they'll be this bad over one hundred
and sixty two games hitting. But this team, in my opinion,
would have and could have benefited in such a big
way with another bat, especially knowing prime years that you
have guys on rookie deals and a very team friendly
(52:27):
deal like the one Hunter Green has.
Speaker 4 (52:29):
Yeah, I mean that's not new information. We've been saying
that for four months, five months.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
And okay, So is there anything that could play out
the first half of this season that would get the
Reds to change the way they've done business? Which is
the way we just described the way they've done business
for so many years? Is there any scenario on what
they do?
Speaker 4 (52:50):
If you read that crazy article that was written in
the Inquirer, you would have to you would expect the
only thing that would create that opportunity for the Reds
would be if they sell out every game between now
and the Apparently.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
Yeah, which is.
Speaker 4 (53:03):
Why should I believe, Tony? Why should I believe that
something will happen?
Speaker 2 (53:06):
Act? Because nothing?
Speaker 4 (53:08):
What do you what do you think should happen or
could happen? What do you answer your own question? What
do what do they think could happen to make the change?
Speaker 3 (53:15):
They stop holding on to those maybe some of those
younger pieces, those prospects, and they they move the chips.
Speaker 4 (53:21):
More all in, Like, what what does that look like?
Speaker 3 (53:23):
Louise Robert, and I know Louise Robert hasn't hit the
ball well this season, but if I'm talking about the
back of a baseball card and it comes down to
moving on from maybe two prospects.
Speaker 4 (53:31):
But we know that they aren't asking for prospects. They're
asking for major league talent. That's why all the trades
this year, basically the offseason, there were few prospects that
went out there. I mean, Charlie's reported that others have
reported that the White Sox now are not negotiating because
why should they. They can wait until the season gets
goes later on, and when they were negotiating, they wanted
(53:54):
big league talent, and who on the there's nobody on
the team to trade.
Speaker 3 (53:58):
As the season goes on, and as the White Sox
fall off into the ABYSS, as they will, you would
have to think that they shift their mindset to collecting
for the future and then maybe you can go and
make that offer to a team like the White Sox.
Speaker 2 (54:15):
JD. Martinez is still out there. I don't know if
you think JD.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
Martinez is valuable or there's a reason that every other
team has passed on him as well. I just I
feel like there is no value in holding the younger
prospects now and I get like a Chase Burns and
what he can become. I think, Cam call your Edwin Arroyo,
guys of that level. If you can get a guy
that will affect this team right now, it's just not
(54:39):
been in the Reds way and the path and how
they do business. My question would be what would have
to happen over the course of the first half of
a season for the Reds to say, you know what,
screw it. I know we haven't done this in the past,
but we need to do it. Would it take something
like a Joe Burrow where an Ellie de la Cruz
(54:59):
or someone else eventually came out and said, man, we
just need some help. Offensively, we're not where we need
to be. No, would that change anything?
Speaker 2 (55:06):
Maybe?
Speaker 4 (55:06):
I think the only word that carries weight is Terry Frankcnas.
If he were to come out and call out the
front office, then maybe something would change.
Speaker 2 (55:15):
But I don't think that's going to happen. That's the
frustrating part. I think a lot of people.
Speaker 4 (55:21):
Baseball players with the baseball players don't have power unless
you're Shoho Tani or you're somebody on this crazy, stupid
expensive deal. Yeah, and even then, you don't have that
much power. Basketball players, football players they have power because
they sell the tickets, they generate all the revenue, They
get a ton of money. Baseball police dudes are all
(55:43):
playing for hundred million dollars a year for the most part,
So they don't have any power. And organizations are fiercely
stubborn about the way that they choose to do business.
I mean to the point where I mean, I'm still
blown away by that article, which is basically somehow it
(56:04):
got through that the Reds aren't going to try if
the fans don't show up to the ballpark. Number one,
How that got published, I don't understand. It's's just unbelievable.
Number two, If that's true, how insulting is that correct?
And so the little stuff like that, the way that
(56:26):
they handle guys going on the injured list, the way
that they continue to basically run the same lineup out
there in the same way through the first twelve games
of the year, which I know is early. It just
kind of has me at the point where it's like,
you know, I don't really expect much to change. Hopefully
they catch lightning at a bottle like they did a
couple of years ago. Yeah, and maybe that's what it is.
(56:49):
Maybe that's the answer. Maybe that's the answer to your question.
Is that they rattle off ten or twelve wins in
a row and kind of force Nick Crawl to do something.
Maybe that's the answer. So I'm just you read off
ten or twelve in a row. People are gonna start
coming to the ballpark and then then all of a sudden,
you have money again.
Speaker 2 (57:10):
Yeah, so wild.
Speaker 4 (57:11):
They act like they're poor.
Speaker 2 (57:13):
That that that article to me made zero sense.
Speaker 4 (57:17):
When do you have people at the ballpark then you
have more cash to do things. They act like they
don't know how to pay rent, like they don't know
where their next paycheck's coming in money right now, that's insanity.
I only asked about Luise Robert because I were two
articles I read before the show today that that tied
the Mets and the Red Sox as fits for Luise
(57:41):
Robert and both listed that they would have to part
ways with a few of their top prospects. It had
that talking about the Red Sox and also talking about
the New York Mets. So I just didn't know that Okay,
Robert's off to a slower start. Health has been a
concern for him. But when he's right, man, he is
(58:01):
really really right.
Speaker 3 (58:03):
Would the White Sox then say, well, obviously we're not
going anywhere, and everyone at the start of the year
thinks you're gonna win and have a chance to compete.
But if I'm reading and I know we've talked about
this from major league talent, if I'm reading that, okay,
the Red Sox want or would have to give up
some top prospects, or the Mets would have to give
up some top prospects. If it came down to prospects alone,
(58:25):
and you're the Reds, would you be willing to do
that for a Luise Robert?
Speaker 4 (58:28):
Depends, depends what his contract looks like, depends where they're
at in the race, I mean. And also on the
flip side of that, the White Sox can wait until
he's good again and drive the price up correct and
that's what I expect them to do. So to me,
it's kind of a moot point. I mean, he did
have a tube bland yesterday, so he would fit in
(58:49):
here really well right now. And his inability to run
the bases and his inability to hit. So right now
he's the perfect player. Don't get him out, but the
guys that you already have. But is now the.
Speaker 2 (59:02):
Time to.
Speaker 4 (59:05):
Up the ante and get rid of all those guys? No,
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (59:11):
It just it's nights like last night and season starts
like we've seen where Hunter and Lodolo have been great,
and we've seen glimpses from Eli and McLain. It's like, man,
you just don't want to sit here like we've talked
about a lot with Joey Vado. Man, they never build
it around Joey, and you don't want to sit here
eight ten years from now and think the same. All Right,
(59:33):
we got to get a break. We've got something special
come up before talkbacks though.
Speaker 4 (59:36):
That's right. We're gonna hear from our guy, Frank Kelly,
and he's gonna check in with us ahead of his
check in for Friday. Yes, and then we'll get into
our talkbacks next. Since he three to sixty thanks to
CINCI shirts on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Hey Google,
What's happened?
Speaker 1 (59:52):
Fifteen thirty Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 2 (59:58):
Welcome back?
Speaker 5 (59:59):
It is?
Speaker 3 (59:59):
Since he three six thanks to Cincy Shirt's ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, excited to be with you. We
got talkbacks coming up in just a few minutes. But uh,
we've got a little bit of a teaser here. We've
got a little bit of a preview Austin of what's
going to be happening on Friday in studio.
Speaker 4 (01:00:16):
But for now, I think, Yeah, I hope, I hope
this is the real guy.
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
Yeah, look, this is a this was this was referred
to you by by you Elson as a white whale guest.
Speaker 4 (01:00:26):
Yes, this one of my all time favorite human beings
and entertainers. And he's on the line with you.
Speaker 3 (01:00:30):
He's joining us right now. It's none other than Frank Caliendo.
Who's who's nice enough to join us right now? Frank,
how are you great?
Speaker 9 (01:00:38):
I didn't know I was.
Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
I gotta get such a.
Speaker 9 (01:00:40):
Build up, but thank you very much. Save a lot
of times people introduce me as the great Frank Calliero,
as though I'm a magician or something like that. Oh
he's finding that or a hypnotist or something, or Oz
the mentalist.
Speaker 4 (01:00:54):
Yeah, the Great Frank Caliendo.
Speaker 9 (01:00:56):
I'm going to tell you what your ATM code is
and it's going to be your number two times.
Speaker 16 (01:01:02):
Like Kenny, you you had my guy Austin in a
in a tizzy on Friday last week because it's hard
for us on April Fool's Day to trust anything that's
out there.
Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
And lo and behold, you're emailing him on April Fools.
But this is in fact you, and you're in fact
coming to town on Friday.
Speaker 9 (01:01:25):
Yeah, and I'm gonna be at the Funnybone on Friday
and Saturday. Frank onstage dot com for tickets and actually Sunday,
I'm in Columbus at the Funnybone there Frank onstage dot
com for that as well. It sends you to their sights.
But the but yeah, I didn't even realize it was
April first that day, and I was I was like
reaching out to people all over the country in places
(01:01:47):
I'm going, and I couldn't understand. You guys were the
ones who finally made me understand. Listen, I was believing
all sorts of.
Speaker 4 (01:01:57):
Things that day.
Speaker 9 (01:01:58):
I fell for the Maroon Fields for Asu. I was,
I mean, there's some things I knew, but then it
would be like two hours later I'd still.
Speaker 4 (01:02:05):
Fall for something.
Speaker 9 (01:02:06):
So I was like I'd love to come on, and
then I had to prove myself like six times and
in my closet doing melkiper Junior talk about from Mendos
set of suits.
Speaker 4 (01:02:16):
The guys Men's Warehouse.
Speaker 9 (01:02:19):
Did a bunch of uh in the meantime, went to
Joseph A. Banks before they're bought out, and even sure
if that's even around to getting two suits from a
price the one at the end of the day CALLI
endough doing the proof that maybe's gonna go.
Speaker 6 (01:02:32):
John Druden, I'll tell you.
Speaker 9 (01:02:33):
What, man, I'm I'm here right next to a shoe tree.
Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
I'm gonna open up this.
Speaker 6 (01:02:37):
I'll be like, so when I come.
Speaker 9 (01:02:38):
In on Friday, We're gonna open a bunch have some
boxes around. We'll do Gruden opening boxes like on barstool.
Speaker 7 (01:02:44):
I'll tell you what, man, you know what we got
right here.
Speaker 9 (01:02:47):
We got a bunch of boxes. I got a box
inside of a box inside of a box.
Speaker 6 (01:02:51):
This is like Inception.
Speaker 9 (01:02:53):
You ever seen that Inception movie? Because Leonardo DiCaprio I
fell in love with them in Titanic, did a great job.
Speaker 6 (01:02:59):
I think his name is Jack.
Speaker 7 (01:03:00):
In that movie, remember the old lady That.
Speaker 9 (01:03:02):
Old lady man how much like Aaron Rodgers she picks
around forever man.
Speaker 4 (01:03:08):
How much prep on the NFL Draft do you do
for this time of year with the draft coming up
for all those.
Speaker 9 (01:03:14):
Different I'm gonna have to do a little bit because
i have to do something. I'm doing something in Green
Bay with Dan Patrick and Doug Gotti, so I'm doing
something out there. Uh and uh so I'm gonna have
to do something because I want to be I want
to be fairly relevant. Most of the time people have
me in to be the court Chester, but in certain
(01:03:36):
times it's better to do uh, like, we should get
some prep.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
How do you guys get some prep? Because I don't
know exactly what the.
Speaker 9 (01:03:43):
Bengals needs and want the needs are. I want you
guys do a little show prep for me and I'll
just pretend like I actually know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 4 (01:03:53):
And if you could, Frank, if you can go find
Tony's draft profile, present that as Kuiper on Friday, that
would be we'd be as esthetic agreed that, yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:04:04):
Let's do it as Morgan Freeman too, And that's when
they realized maybe they did or did not know what
they were talking about.
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
You know, it Kuiper not been so fired up about
Jimmy class, and I think I could have lasted a
little bit longer with the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
So we will.
Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
We'll have to dive into that. You mentioned Grewden opening boxes.
The University of Cincinnati was the first school to actually
send Gruden the box. And now he's just a fan
of every team out there. He's got something nice.
Speaker 9 (01:04:27):
I love every team, man, I love I love rivalries,
especially when I'm the hugest fan of each team in
the rivalry. Man, Cincinnati Bearcats, I love when you guys
play coach.
Speaker 4 (01:04:39):
Do you know who coach? Do you know who the
Bearcat's rival is?
Speaker 6 (01:04:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:04:44):
Man, they're They're the Toledo Mudheads.
Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
That is See, you need no prep, you're already ready
to go.
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
That's fantastic. Who is the Who is the Bearcats ride?
Speaker 4 (01:04:56):
Who is the Tony? What would you say? I don't
know that they really have We'll have one.
Speaker 3 (01:05:00):
Well, you know, the Battle for the Victory Bell is
one of the oldest rivalries out there, but you see
has pretty much dominated that historically.
Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
Except the question yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
That would be Miami Universe, Miami University, Love honor, Oxford.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
I'll tell you what. That's tremendous.
Speaker 9 (01:05:14):
That's tremendous rival That's one of my favorite rivalries. Open
up a box about that rivalry. Man, that's a that's
the best rivalry I've seen since Muhammad Ali and smoking
Joe Fraser.
Speaker 4 (01:05:26):
Man to Gruden's face one time. Didn't you didn't you
weren't you on hard Knocks?
Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:05:32):
Yeah I did, Yeah I did.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
They had me comme in.
Speaker 9 (01:05:35):
I got two game balls, so I talked to the
Raiders twice in preseason.
Speaker 4 (01:05:40):
They won both games.
Speaker 9 (01:05:42):
Each time they sent me a game ball.
Speaker 7 (01:05:44):
Maybe being a being an NFL.
Speaker 9 (01:05:47):
Journeyman lineman for years, you never get a game ball.
Five foot six, one eighty Caliendo comes in gets a
game ball for talking like this, man, Derek Carr, I
love it. I love it when you don't have any sleeves.
That's a nice job there.
Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:06:04):
Is uh is Cincinnati? Is it viewed as a hotbed
for comedy? You're coming in Friday? Tell us again about
the show, and uh, obviously you'll be in with us
on Friday as.
Speaker 9 (01:06:13):
Well Friday and Saturday. One show Friday to Saturday. I'm
apparently big enough to get rid of the late show Friday,
because I never like doing them. So mate, let a
TikTok star do that or something.
Speaker 4 (01:06:26):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (01:06:27):
So, uh, it's it's the uh Cincinnati Funnybone in Liberty Township.
So that you can get to their website by Frank
Onstage dot com.
Speaker 4 (01:06:40):
You don't even have to spell caliendo.
Speaker 9 (01:06:42):
So Frank on Stage dot com will take you to
the Cincinnati Funnybone. And then Sunday, the Columbus Funnybone is
like twenty five tickets from being sold out to on Sunday.
So both Friday and Saturday, Cincinnati, Sunday Columbus and Frank
on stage dot Com, all those shows are the Funny Bone.
Speaker 4 (01:07:01):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:07:01):
Awesome, man.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
We we look forward to, uh to catching up with
you on on Friday. We appreciate this and uh it's
glad to hear that it's actually you. Austin was was
really concerned about this the last few days.
Speaker 9 (01:07:11):
I was starting to question myself afore I was after
a while.
Speaker 2 (01:07:15):
We you know, we like to vet every guest on
this show.
Speaker 4 (01:07:18):
Yeah, we're thorough. It's very a buttoned up operation here, Frank,
because you can.
Speaker 2 (01:07:22):
See, yeah, I did I did feel it. I felt it.
Speaker 9 (01:07:24):
I was I thought I wasn't going to get the nomination.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
All right, thank you for appreciating seeing a couple of days.
I'll see on Friday.
Speaker 6 (01:07:33):
See on Friday.
Speaker 4 (01:07:33):
Thanks guys.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
It's fantastic, Kelly Indo.
Speaker 4 (01:07:36):
So what's funny about that is he sends me this
email and it's, you know, an address I don't recognize
and all this stuff. I think it's for you know,
April Folds. He sends me his phone number. He's like,
text me, text me, text me. And I wasn't just
going to text this random number because that day, primarily,
more than anything, this was an indictment on kid Chris,
(01:07:57):
who I don't trust and has pranked me several times
in the past and has made a living off of
pranking people. And so I finally vet that it really
is Frank Caliendo and I send him a text and
I said, Hi, Frank, this is Austin and he said
who and then immediately said, now that is an April
Fool's prank and great stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:08:19):
Well I am.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
I'm looking forward to Friday. I cannot wait to get
him in studio with us. And uh, with that, we
have some time for your impersonations. Now with some talkbacks,
(01:08:59):
talkback thanks to Cincy shirts.
Speaker 17 (01:09:01):
Yeah since Reds when your new manager turned out to
be lame. Yeah, and you can't score more than one
run on games the ownership continues to be crap.
Speaker 2 (01:09:13):
Can you please get every more at.
Speaker 17 (01:09:15):
That since hevents no offense? Okay, since the events.
Speaker 18 (01:09:21):
Man, it's pretty good. Hey, Austin, Tony Jeff and your
Ray Jeff. I wanted to ask you guys about the
portal and what your thoughts were about being in it.
Would you rather want to sign up with somebody right
away or would you rather want to hold off a
little bit and kind of see where the dominoes fall?
(01:09:45):
And the reason I'm asking is because you see has
not been linked to any big men yet, which is
a desperate need let me know.
Speaker 19 (01:09:52):
So.
Speaker 3 (01:09:53):
I think it's a little bit of both, because I
think if you're one of the most sought after players
in the portal, you're going to get those offers early.
But if you are a you know, just a tier
below or middle of the pack, I would almost wait
because the demand would be a little bit higher, and
then teams may pay a little bit more of a premium.
It's almost the same way. We just talked about with
the White Sox, Austin, if you're not going to be
(01:10:13):
off the board, quickly allow maybe some teams to compete
and maybe rise that raise that price up for you.
Speaker 2 (01:10:20):
Hot time.
Speaker 20 (01:10:20):
Pike and my Buckeye brother Adi just wanted to inform
you I am signing two executive orders. One Reds will
only be playing games after nine point thirty Eastern Standard time,
not only ensuring they'll be undefeated, but revitalizing the downtown
dive bar economy. My second executive order, I am naming
(01:10:43):
Hunter Green Secretary of strikeouts. Yes, Secretary of strikeouts.
Speaker 2 (01:10:50):
Thank you, President.
Speaker 21 (01:10:51):
Hello, this is former president Ronald Riggin. And will there
they go again? Another one to nothing game? Who to
the Reds think they are the soccer Club Cincinnatis? Anyway,
wouldn't it be ironic if this team's filibuster offense were
to be no hit on the day that they pay
tribute to the hit King.
Speaker 2 (01:11:12):
Ooh ooh, that would be awful. It would be bad,
could be fit?
Speaker 22 (01:11:17):
Parny saw your post on X yesterday about firing up
the Bomber oh Man for the first time this year.
Great feeling, I agree, Nothing like that. Smell fresh cut Grass.
You could say it's a tradition unlike any other. Hey,
jump into the Reds real quick. I know they play
one sixty two, but every game counts the same. Can't
help but feel that this game today is really important.
(01:11:38):
Get a win, get back to one game under got
the bad pires coming into town.
Speaker 2 (01:11:43):
Things could change real quick.
Speaker 3 (01:11:44):
Yeah, it feels like a huge shift if they can
get this one today. Would agree with you one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
County. I'm gonna let you take the I tell you
what on this one? You ready?
Speaker 17 (01:11:54):
Fillashind kill here and boy, I'm gonna tell you what.
Speaker 5 (01:11:59):
The are two?
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
Since great Scott called in, how about that? Can we
get him and hold on? I'm on the phone here,
Pandols Sports Network. This is Hank Hill. I'd like to
resume my subscription.
Speaker 16 (01:12:12):
So you can't just resume every time the Reds win
and kids every time they lose.
Speaker 19 (01:12:17):
What?
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
Yeah, you know we've been positive for a couple of
days about the Reds and Scott has nothing to say now?
Speaker 23 (01:12:26):
Is Hunter Green and Nadola the best one to two
punching baseball?
Speaker 4 (01:12:30):
Who Hunter Green? And who?
Speaker 2 (01:12:31):
Lodola is Hunter Green? Hello? Lodola is Hunter Green?
Speaker 24 (01:12:38):
And Nadola the best one to two punch in baseball.
Speaker 10 (01:12:43):
Guys, I'd like to make a comparison between the Bengals
and the Reds. When the Bengals had one of the
best offenses in the NFL, but our defense sucked. And
then with the Reds, our pitching has been absolutely amazing,
one of the top, and yet our offense is really struggling,
so and our record is too, So it'll be interesting.
(01:13:05):
Hopefully they'll be able to turn it around. I'm just
very proud of our pitching staff, and I hope they
can stay healthy.
Speaker 3 (01:13:11):
And what if we could combine the two, the Bengals
offense and the Reds pitching.
Speaker 25 (01:13:18):
Ladella really looks sharp. I think he could give Hunter
Green a run for the money. Who the best picture
on his team is. That's a good problem to have.
Speaker 11 (01:13:29):
WHOA just need to get a little bit more offense
going just doesn't acknowledge it. Hopefully the Bengals make some
good draft picks here say they sure.
Speaker 2 (01:13:40):
We get sure?
Speaker 3 (01:13:40):
He is the ye thank you loud talking back on
he gave east Side come one.
Speaker 22 (01:13:51):
His cub cadets like the Reds offense, It's gonna offer
me some the bubble heads to get out and mow
the lawn.
Speaker 24 (01:13:57):
Come on, all right, hey guys, Happy Wednesday, talk back
matters guy. And yesterday when I called, I'm saying that
a lady president.
Speaker 4 (01:14:13):
Since he three sixty would be great.
Speaker 24 (01:14:14):
So Gina Peppermint Patty or the Marinate, which I hope
we do the marinate stuff pretty soon.
Speaker 4 (01:14:22):
That was pretty cool, some of the stuff she come
up with the Marinate.
Speaker 24 (01:14:24):
And yeah, there's nothing wrong with swinging both ways, Austin.
Speaker 2 (01:14:28):
I mean you know that right. See, I never said
there was anything wrong with it.
Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
I just is going to understand exactly what he was
trying to tell us yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
See what the Marinate thinks. Yeah, I'll ask her.
Speaker 26 (01:14:42):
Tony Beastick, it's the mail man. Come out here on
a little brisk afternoon. List all those warming I think
the Reds look like they're going to be about what
they are. Good pitching, lack of luster, offense. I could
sum it up with this little diddy here. Roses are red,
(01:15:02):
violets are blue. Sometimes they don't be like that, but
sometimes they do.
Speaker 9 (01:15:07):
Man, you guys have another day.
Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
Man, very nice.
Speaker 4 (01:15:13):
Karl Maline at the loan shooting too, very nice.
Speaker 9 (01:15:18):
Oh, come on.
Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
Mike, must be.
Speaker 27 (01:15:39):
Mike and l a man well repping than Naddie out
here in sunny hots on it?
Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
What up, Tony? What up? Body power?
Speaker 27 (01:15:46):
The Reds are flexing strong and I'm loving it, from
Green to Nick to singer. Yo, these pictures are going
seven in its strong and they coming with that flame.
So who won't this smoke in the central We got
it if our office can catch up, I got I'm
dreaming about some things already.
Speaker 4 (01:16:02):
We finally won a series.
Speaker 27 (01:16:03):
I'm liking what I'm seeing, but I'm not liking the
candy man swingin that taffy bat.
Speaker 5 (01:16:07):
Yo.
Speaker 2 (01:16:07):
He's soft marshmallow, not filling it. What a waste of.
Speaker 3 (01:16:10):
Money swinging that taffy bat tag good bat the candy
Man swinging that taffy.
Speaker 8 (01:16:16):
God, Happy hump day, right back at you.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
One to zero, Thank you God.
Speaker 23 (01:16:25):
All right, and you're starting lineup for the I Heart
Hot Mics today, taking on the Fox nineteen Storm trackers.
Leading it off is second baseman Lance McAllister, backing second
first base, Tony Pike, the centerfielder today, and hitting third
is Rocky Boyman clean up man, third based Austin Elmore
shortstop left fielder Scott Slowing six pitching Bill Cunningham. The
(01:16:51):
right fielder today is Chad Brindle, and behind the plate
is the catcher the sag man, Dennison.
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Let's play ball man. Good luck beating that lineup.
Speaker 4 (01:16:59):
Yeah, seriously, hate to be a storm tracker.
Speaker 28 (01:17:02):
Hey, guys, trying to be paused about the Reds here,
But am I my understanding? Do you guys think the
Giants are just in a bad stretch right now and
the Reds really aren't playing any better? Or or are
the Reds playing better? And do we really expect the
front office to change anything. I think they're trying to
show a new way of win. You know, this is
(01:17:24):
like the new money bow. Good players that aren't that
good and win be onto something here.
Speaker 2 (01:17:31):
I think a couple of things.
Speaker 3 (01:17:32):
I don't think giant the Giants offensively, I don't think
they have stained power in that division. I think they've
started really well, but I don't think that they're hitting
will be consistent all season. But no, the Reds pitching
is really good.
Speaker 2 (01:17:47):
Gentlemen stick too from the day.
Speaker 19 (01:17:49):
Wow, ton, I just want to let you know this
is my voice, not Frank Caliando, and one of the
see if we can find some big men in the portal.
Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
We're getting slammed on the basketball court.
Speaker 19 (01:18:04):
Bearcats that I'm talking about, and you know, I don't
like to say bring back hugs. He's gone, but we
need a guy like him.
Speaker 4 (01:18:16):
Man, I'd say, it's been a long time since we
heard from Stick. Go from here from the Ding Dick
Man red Ding. Yeah, oh Hi, you're right. We do
need a big man or six. That was our last one,
very good. We got to take a break. We'll come back.
Speaker 3 (01:18:31):
We've got a an injury update that we've got to
get to and a little bit of Bengals before we
switch gears to some Bearcats and nour number three. Since
he three sixty thanks to Cincy Shirts on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (01:18:44):
From the Club Us on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 3 (01:18:56):
Welcome back, since he three to sixty, ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station, Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 2 (01:19:02):
Happy to have you along a service.
Speaker 3 (01:19:07):
Are good friends at Cincy Shirts. It is time Austin
before we dive into anything else. For today's Postman Law
injury report delivered by Postman Law. If you're injured, Postman delivers.
From a Major League Baseball standpoint, not much new, although
how about Jackson Merrill. Austin, who just signed the huge
extension for the San Diego Padres, put on the ten
(01:19:28):
day injured list with a right hamstring strain. Also for
those Padres, Fernando Tatis Junior and Jake Cronenworth left their
game yesterday against the Athletics with apparent injuries as well.
And from a NL central standpoint, Justin Steele, who just
pitched seven shutout innings against the Rangers on Monday, has
(01:19:51):
been placed on the fifteen day injured list with left
elbow tendonitis. Of course, as it relates to the Reds,
nothing has changed from an injury standpoint, accept the addition
to Matt McClain, who has been added to the ten
day injured list with a what do we call it,
Austin A slight hamstring string, Yes, not a real one,
(01:20:12):
just a slight one, A.
Speaker 4 (01:20:13):
Slight left hamstring discomfort, strain, sore on us, whatever you
want to call it.
Speaker 3 (01:20:18):
That along with Tyler Stevenson, Alexis Diaz, Andrew Abbot.
Speaker 4 (01:20:22):
Andrew Abbitt is going to start on Saturday against the Pirates. Okay,
so that has been kind of clarified now with Spires
going down to Triple A and uh, it's going to
clear the path for Andrew Abbot to start Saturday against
the Bucket.
Speaker 3 (01:20:36):
We've also been told leading up to this point. I
haven't heard anything that would go against it. Are we
still expecting Austin Hayes back with the team for the
Pirate Series? We don't know, are we. The latest report
from Mark Sheldon of MLB dot Com reported that Hayes
is expected returned to the lineup when the Reds were
(01:20:57):
turned home from the road trip April eleventh, But Terry
Francona did say on Sunday morning it's not necessarily fair
to him to put a timetable on it, But I
think the goal is when we come back from San Francisco.
So that is the latest with Austin Hayes that I
would not get my hopes of. Yeah, that makes our today.
That makes it today's Postman long injury report delivered by
(01:21:18):
Postman loaal injured call eight four to four.
Speaker 2 (01:21:21):
Postman. There you have it. Anything else from a baseball
standpoint that we haven't got.
Speaker 4 (01:21:25):
To, Well, we need to check in on our poll
question let's do that poll question of service of Revivefitnessystems
dot com and you're regarding our conversation with Joe Daniman yesterday.
Quite simple, which will happen first? Ellie Day La Cruz
wins an MVP award or Hunter Green wins the cy
Young Award. Eighty eight point eight percent say Hunter Green
(01:21:47):
wins the cy Young Still an hour left to vote.
Eleven and a half percent now up for Ellie Day
La Cruz. Which that's a lot better than it was
at the start of the show. Okay, maybe making a
little bit of a comeback. Very very scary to see
the uh was it?
Speaker 3 (01:22:03):
The The roof collapse of a of a nightclub that
happened in the Dominican Republic early Tuesday took the life
of Octavio Dotel, a former World Series champion. Tony Blanco
is a former Major League Baseball player. There among the dead.
I just saw this as well. Austin that Hall of
Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez said that several of his family
(01:22:25):
members were inside the night club and that he still
has family members that are in the rubbles. They don't
know what happened to him. They are still missing so
obviously our thoughts with all of those from the nightclub
collapse in the Dominican Republic as well, that's a scary,
scary thing. And to hear Pedro Martinez open up about
that worth noting from a Major League baseball standpoint as well.
(01:22:46):
I have two Bengals questions while we have a few minutes,
because we're going to talk about the Bearcats here and
our number three, Austin.
Speaker 2 (01:22:52):
Are you ready sure?
Speaker 3 (01:22:56):
Ryan Phillips Sports Illustrated talked about the Cincinnati Bengals and
they lost this offseason that no one is paying attention to,
but could weigh large when the season rolls around and
it says an offensive line standpoint, he says, does Ryan?
(01:23:16):
The Bengals can ill afford to lose anyone on the
offensive line, but they cast Trent Brown adrift after a
disappointing season in twenty twenty four. The Veterans suffered a
torn pateller ten and in Week three missed the rest
of the season. The Textan signed him to a one
year deal. Meanwhile, the Bengals will have to add offensive
line help via the draft. I'm happy with where the
(01:23:37):
Bengals are at tackle. Amarius Mems Orlando Brown junior. Trent
Brown may have been a nice emergency option, but I didn't,
and I still don't, even after reading this from Ryan,
have any issue with the Bengals moving on from Trent Brown.
Do you or should they have taken a flyer on
(01:23:57):
on moving on from Trent Brown on? They have maybe
tried to bring him back, obviously at a cheap rate
as an emergency situation.
Speaker 2 (01:24:04):
Yeah, sure, why not?
Speaker 3 (01:24:07):
Because we didn't really talk about Trent Brown much after this.
I mean that he had a rough training camp. It
wasn't like he was egregiously bad through a couple of weeks,
but a mem slid in there nicely. He would never
be starting here. He would be an emergency backup, but
we we didn't really mention that. They just kind of
casually moved.
Speaker 2 (01:24:23):
On from him.
Speaker 5 (01:24:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24:24):
I think a guy that is as ginormous as Trent
Brown is recovering from an injury like that, it's just
more of a you know what, we'll wait and see.
No need to commit to this guy right now. I
mean that sort of knee injury for a guy as
big as he is and as long as he's been
in the league, I think there's serious doubts about his
(01:24:44):
ability to come back from that. So that's probably the
reason why the Bengals were just like, you know, we'll
move on and maybe they revisit it. We'll see how he,
you know, how healthy he gets between now and training camp.
Speaker 3 (01:24:54):
Also, during an interview with Kay Adams, veteran safety Justin's
Simmons listed off a couple of the teams that he
would like to play for as he is still a
free agent this upcoming season. He said, quote, Baker and
Tampa have been doing really well in that division for
a while, and so going to Atlanta thinking there was
a chance to make something special happen that didn't pan out.
(01:25:17):
But teams like Buffalo, Philly, Cincinnati, teams like that that
have been in the mix and will be in the
mix obviously would be special to play for. Simmons is
thirty one years old. One season with the Atlanta Falcons
after spending much of his year in Denver. He was
just a fifty nine point nine PFF last year. If
(01:25:38):
the price was right, and we've talked about safety being
a position of potential need for the Cincinnati Bengals, would
a flyer on Justin Simmons at thirty one years old,
do anything for you. Yeah, he's a great player, great player,
bad situation last year. Sure, never really got comfortable. But
I think that goes to kind of say in view
(01:25:58):
maybe where some of these free agents view Cincinnati. They're
right there in that conversation with Buffalo Philly teams that
are on the edge looking to kind of push across
that finish line and win another Super Bowl or win
a Super Bowl. Justin Simmons, if we're talking about safety
being a position of need for the Cincinnati Bengals, then
(01:26:20):
Justin Simmons seems like it would be a perfect fit. Now,
the price would have to be right and different things
like that, but I do think it would be at
least an interesting move for the Cincinnati Bengals if they
moved in that direction. From a free agent standpoint.
Speaker 4 (01:26:36):
He's one of those guys, and there's this group of
players every year where it's like, Okay, he's played well
in the past, maybe he took a bit of a
dip last year. This is a position of need. We'll
reevaluate after the draft. He's one of those guys where
it'll be like, Okay, he'll sign in early July. He'll
sign in late July. I'll start sign right at the
start of training camp or maybe in the middle of
(01:26:58):
the preseason or whatever. He's that type of player, and
if I remember correctly, that's when he signed last year too,
it was pretty late in the game.
Speaker 3 (01:27:05):
So, and to be honest, team for players now, that's
more beneficial for them to wait until the draft or
after the draft.
Speaker 4 (01:27:13):
Yeah, it's just we're at this point right now in
the offseason. Yeah, teams aren't really looking that closely at
free agents now. The Bengals signed a guy today, Joe
Giles Harris. I could be saying his name wrong, assuming
that's how you pronounce it. I did not look that up,
but is on their practice squad at the end of
last year. Special team are going to be a linebacker
depth that type of guy like those signings will happen
(01:27:36):
from time time. We've seen a few of those over
the last week or two. But guys that could potentially
play roles, there's just no reason to go after that
right now until you figure out how the draft plays out.
We're also now in this two weeks where there's a
bunch of pre draft visits going on. They're finalizing their
reports they're finalizing scouting, they're coming up with their board.
(01:27:57):
All the free agency and the guys that are out
there are kind of secondary right now. We won't hear
much about that until probably Junior July.
Speaker 3 (01:28:04):
Yeah, it's never out of sight, out of mind, but
it's not the top priority right now.
Speaker 4 (01:28:07):
Correct.
Speaker 3 (01:28:08):
This is, you know, the evaluation process, and for the
Bengals it's probably a little bit different this year as
well because they're having to evaluate so many different positions.
In years past, you could really hone in on, Okay,
here's the positions of need. The evaluation process I would
imagine for the Bengals this year is extremely, extremely detailed
because of so many different positions and the value of
(01:28:31):
the draft in itself. I mean, we've talked about it
all off season. They can ill afford to miss this
year in the draft. It just can't happen. Do we
need to get to a break. Do we have a
little more time, No, we gotta go to a break.
We gotta go to a break because we have Scott
Saderfield waiting to talk to us, the head football coach
of the Cincinnati Bearcats. Will join us at the top
of our number three next right here, on Cincy three

ED is an intimacy destroyer. Research shows that men can
droll apart from their partners when edy affects their sex life.
This condition leads to stress, anxiety, depression, and even worse,
a man's partner can blame themselves when EDY becomes a problem.
Tri State Men's Health understands all of this. They understand
that true, few experiences in the world are as wonderful
(01:29:25):
as those when you're connected to the one you love.

Do you heard right there at ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station, thanks to our friends at Penn Station. Let's
(01:30:08):
talk some football. To kick off the third and final
hour of the show. We've got the UC football Spring
Showcase happening this Saturday. It's gonna be awesome. It's a
full day event. Let's talk more about the Bearcats with
the head coach of the Bearcats, Scott Saderfield, joining us
right now.
Speaker 2 (01:30:25):
Coach, what's going.
Speaker 6 (01:30:26):
On, oh man, A lot of ball, a little recruiting,
and a lot of good stuff. Man, So we're having
fun with Spider Mill of spring practice and looking forward
to us Saturday's showcase.
Speaker 3 (01:30:37):
You guys are kind of in the middle of practices
this week. I know you practiced yesterday, You're going to
practice again tomorrow before Saturday showcase. How has the spring
been thus far? I would imagine it's different in today's
game because you've got the new additions and you're trying
to kind of blend everybody in together. How has how
has spring ball been to this point?
Speaker 6 (01:30:56):
Yeah, it's been good. You know, I think for us,
you know, we had a bunch of guys that came
back off last year's team, you know, and I think
that that that's been good because they're now they've been
around us now for two over two years and understand
what we're trying to do, and you know, culturally, and
then now you're adding fourteen transfers that came in January,
twelve high school players that graduated early and got here
(01:31:18):
in January as well, so you know, mid twenties and
new players that are adjusted well. I think throughout the
winter program with coach Nico and his staff, and then
you know, jumping right into the to the football part
of it, it's been fun to see. You know, we
got a lot of new wide receivers out there, a
lot of new faces, you know, a lot of new
dvs as well safeties in a new corner, so I
would say, and in Tylee Walker, you know, a new
(01:31:41):
running back. I mean those kind of some guy headlining
type players and positions that we need some help at,
and I think they've come in and done some really
good stuff for us.
Speaker 3 (01:31:49):
How big of a difference you mentioned getting guys back,
not only to get them back, but to get them
back at pivotal positions and roles on this team. How
important does that become to be able to then pick
and kind of choose the other parts of the roster
to fill in, but know you've got a nucleus coming
back at so many important positions.
Speaker 6 (01:32:07):
Yeah, I mean it's big. You know the fact that
having you know, particularly you look at O line and
D line where you obviously have to have you know,
big strong bodies there and mature bodies and guys that
have played some football. And Gavin Gerhart coming back will
be a three time captain, Forrest does everything right, I mean,
just playing with such great confidence and poise right now.
And then you got Corleone's coming back on the D line.
You know, those two guys are anchoring the O line
(01:32:28):
and D line, and the great kids and Ohio kids
that that really, you know, love our program and kind
of starts with those guys and it kind of spreads
out from there. You know, Joe Rorior, you know, a
tight end has had a really good spring and good
off season. You know, Brendan Soresby back. It's always great
to have a quarterback coming back as well. I'm playing
with a lot more poise right now, in confidence and
knowing what to do, you know. And then then the linebacker,
(01:32:50):
you know, Jack Dingles back, you got JT, you got
gold A. I mean, you know, send me and you
know some may of these guys that are back at
linebacker position, it's been awesome, you know. So I would say,
just your your nucleus, the core guys up front on
both sides of the ball. You know, I think it
really if you had to start somewhere, it's great to
start right there.
Speaker 3 (01:33:10):
I went back and I was thinking of of eight
oh nine and coming back from junior year to senior year,
and Brian Kelly even talked then about kind of handing
the keys over to the car and just how slow
the game became for me going from eight to nine,
being in the system for another year when you think
about getting soresby back in your offensive system. How much
(01:33:31):
of a role now gets to get expanded, How much
can you broaden what you're doing. How much more efficient
can you be just having another year under your belt
with your quarterback.
Speaker 6 (01:33:42):
Yeah, I think just he's just so much more comfortable.
I think you know the terminology. I mean, you know,
coming in, you got to learn all the guys. You
got obviously got to learn the offense. You gotta learn terminology,
you got to learn you know, all the things. There's
so many things you have to learn. And now I
think you know, at this point, if you've gone through
a whole year, you know, you settle in. You know,
you just feel more comfortable with everything that we're doing.
(01:34:02):
And now you're coaching and teaching the new guys. You know,
got several new receivers, so he's helping to coach those guys. Uh,
you know, and then we can you can do a
lot of things on offense. You know, it's just so
much easier just to add a play here or there.
And I know it'll be that way once we get
to the ball and you know, and I think you
can just see the poise, you know, the way he
sits in the pocket, you know, and it still comes
down to the players around him making plays and and him,
(01:34:25):
you know, making great decisions and not forcing the football.
And that's you know, where we got in trouble a
little bit, I think, you know, toward the end of
last year. But uh, you know, we've got to get
him back playing like he did the first half of
the season, which which I think we got some guys
on the outside that will help that be able to
push the ball down the field, which we struggled with
that late in the season last year and that kind
of hurt us obviously. Uh, but just having you know,
(01:34:46):
a year under his belt played in the Big Twelve
this past year, I mean, coming into the season with
a ton more confidence.
Speaker 3 (01:34:52):
How how high is the ceiling and a potential standpoint
for Dante Corleon and Joe Royer, I think you can
make the argument from a position standpoint in the Big
Twelve being at the top for them to take the
next step to be some of the top players at
their position in the country, how big is their ceiling
and what they can accomplish.
Speaker 6 (01:35:11):
Yeah, you know, I think, you know, start with Joe,
I mean, he's already got the size you want, six five,
two fifty five. He runs really well. You know, the
thing for him is really working on route running, you know,
being really good in and out of your breaks and
squaring those those routes, the routes off and being able
to make those good content cats, which he can do.
He's got really good hands. And then also blocking game
(01:35:33):
is being very solid in that as well. And then again,
you know, here's a guy who's got a year under
his belt within our system and fully understands, you know,
what he what he can do. And I think I
think he's potentially can have a great year and be
one of the better tight ends in the country, certainly
in the Big twelve, but if not maybe in the country.
And you know, Dante's a guy, you know, coming into
the last year, you know, he had that health scare
(01:35:53):
and we had to deal with some things with that,
and now we got that under control and he's able
to cut loose and be able to play play. I
think that's gonna help him more this year as well.
And you're talking about a guy who's already you know,
one of probably one of the strongest players in the country.
More more, one of the better defensive tackles in the
country as well, and I think I think he can
have a you know, maybe his best year of his
(01:36:14):
career could be this year for us, and you know,
really help because you've got a lot of good players
are surrounding him, you know, d line and linebacker wise,
so he'll just get some great push there and be
able to make a lot of plays for us.
Speaker 3 (01:36:25):
How important is a weekend like this upcoming for your
program because you kind of get to mix in a
little bit of everything. You have the alumni golf out,
even more former players are going to come back and
be around you and be around the program. You get
the Captain's Breakfast on Saturday. I know you guys are
going to do open practice from noon to two. There's
going to be a big event out at shake Lee
(01:36:46):
LN you see, baseball is gonna play at three, and
then you guys have the opportunity with Bearcats at the
ballpark on Saturday night, so you get to kind of
work on your team and your craft, you get to
welcome back former players, and then you're also out in
the community as well. How big of a weekend is
that for you to to kind of hit on all
three of those areas and how big they offer the program.
Speaker 6 (01:37:08):
Yeah, I mean obviously it's huge for the program. I
mean obviously we want to work our football stuff in
which we've been doing, and we'll get to do that
again Saturday with from twelve to two, you know, in
fancy come out and see you know, in families too,
because we'll have I think we got around five hundred
family members coming back for a big lunch and right
after the scrimmage as well, So you know there's a
lot going on within our team. But I think more
importantly this weekend is about you know, giving back to
(01:37:31):
the program and all the guys that came before, these
particular players that you know had a lot of blood,
sweat and tears and built this program to what it
is and you know, coming to them coming back and
getting to tell those stories I think is always huge.
And you know several of them will be at practice
as well. Then you mentioned the Captain's Breakfast, which is
an unbelievable tradition that's been going on for a long
long time. You know for former captains that played here
(01:37:55):
as a Cincinnati Barrick had to come back and get
to talk and reminisce and and that they sit with
the seniors, which I think is very cool. You know,
the seniors get to have breakfast with them, they get
to you know, hear wisdom from those guys, and I
think that that is awesome as well.
Speaker 5 (01:38:09):
You know.
Speaker 6 (01:38:09):
And then you know being out and you know, being
in in Shafety Lawn and having they had a bunch
of things set up for the fans with that, and
then having the baseball game as well, which is very cool.
You know, right our baseball team is playing really good
baseball right now, and then going to the Reds and
celebrating them too. So a lot, a lot that we
have to offer here in Cincinnati. We'll have a bunch
of recruits here too, so that's always a great thing too.
(01:38:30):
They get to see what, you know, what the Cincinnati
family is all about. So I think that's a that's
easy to sell as well. So it's exciting weekend and
we're looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (01:38:38):
You get down to the ballpark on Saturday night and
you're giving the option, are you still rolling with uh
a little walk of flocking with heart and the paint?
Speaker 8 (01:38:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:38:47):
I mean, man, that gets everybody going, get somebody you
see a little bit. Man, let's let's go. Now, you've
got to follow through. You know, you feel like, you
know you can get that and you get on the
plate and you're ready to go. So yeah, that's pretty good.
That's pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:38:59):
Soon in there as uh, as well as other things
that will happen after spring. I know on May seventh,
you guys are going to be a bucketheads. On May
twenty first, fifty West, you guys are can doing the
ball and brew events again. Well, why is that important
to get out in the off season in the community
and reach out to those fans as well.
Speaker 6 (01:39:17):
I think it's a great opportunity for the fans they
do want to interact with you know, a few of
our players or coaches. It's a great chance to make
that happen. I think you want to obviously make that
available for any fans that want to and also the
fans that want to hear, Hey, what's going on right now?
You know what's the team looking like? You know, how
is everybody's mind, you know going into the summer and
in this in this fall, and you know what do
(01:39:38):
we have to look forward to? You know, it's an
exciting fall for us. I mean we open up, you
know against Nebraska, which is going to be up you know,
close to a top twenty five team preseason and in
Arahead Stadium or the Chiefs play, so that's going to
be exciting. And then seven home games. I mean, you
know that's that's exciting as well. So you know, I
feel like, uh, it's a great opportunity to go talk
about our program and the fans get to hear and
(01:39:58):
listen and you know, goarly excited for this upcoming season.
Speaker 3 (01:40:02):
Lastly, coach, I know, but before I let you go,
you mentioned that the opener against Nebraska. I would imagine
that changes maybe a little bit of the preparation leading
in knowing that you're starting with an opponent like Nebraska
and head head coach Matt Ruhle, what does it look
like for you guys once spring ball is done? I know,
in this day and age, there is no time off,
(01:40:22):
but what does the rest of that that off season
schedule look like before you ramp it up quickly and
head to Arrowhead.
Speaker 6 (01:40:30):
Yeah, I mean, I think our guys will get up
a few weeks off right after this semester, and it's
basically the only time they do get off, you know,
a chance to go clear to the heads at A
lot of them will go back home for a couple
of weeks, but then they get right back in here
and you know we're opening up our brand new facility
that's that's going to be available to them. You know,
right there at the first of June, it's looking amazing.
It's going to really change our program in the positive
(01:40:51):
moving forward. And then it's all about training throughout the summer.
You know, we're there's a rules now we can do
a lot more with our guys throughout the summer, which
we'll be able to do that, and you know, get
ready for a team in Nebraska that had one of
their best teams they've had in a long time. Last
year they made it to a bowl game for the
first time and maybe ten to ten years. So you know,
Coach Rules got the team going. We know they got
(01:41:12):
an outstanding quarterback and they got a good team and
they got a lot of good players. So that'll be
a great test for us to start the season on
Thursday night at air Ahead. And so we got a
lot to work this summer to get done in order
to go out there and play our best game against Nebraska.
We know that that'll be a great test for us
as we head into the Big twelve season.
Speaker 3 (01:41:32):
A ton of really cool things coming together. You mentioned
the indoor facility as well, Coach. I know it's a
busy time. Thank you so much for giving us a
little bit of your time today, and good luck to
rest of spring ball. Enjoy the weekend as well.
Speaker 6 (01:41:43):
Yep, I appreciate you telling talk to you soon.
Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
Yes, sir, thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:41:46):
Coach that is the head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats,
Scott Ciderfield. Appreciate his time. As always, we'll switch gears.
We'll stick with the Bearcats. We'll go to basketball next
with Keegan Nicholson and our number three since he three
to sixty thanks to Penn Station on ESPN fifteen to
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Welcome back, since a three to sixty,
rolling along our number three thanks to our friends at
(01:42:07):
Penn Station. We just got done talking some UC football.
Let's switch gears. Let's talk some UC basketball. We do
so with our good friend covering the Bearcats for Bearcat
Journal dot Com. It is Keegan Nickoson joining us right now.
Hi Keegan, how are you?
Speaker 29 (01:42:23):
I'm doing excellent and Sony one day I'm hoping to
have the stay in power to get my name before
the head coach of EC's football game, and you list
it in the tweet.
Speaker 8 (01:42:33):
I think that day is gonna It might be twenty
years down the road, but it'll come.
Speaker 3 (01:42:37):
It will come at one point, Keegan. What I want
to know, Uh, when will players start coming in to
the University of Cincinnati basketball program?
Speaker 6 (01:42:48):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:42:48):
Because we saw the announcements on on Sunday two new
additions to the team. Since then, it has been pretty
much a mass exodus. Uh, let's start with the additions.
How do you envision the two new additions to the
squad helping west Miller's team next year?
Speaker 25 (01:43:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:43:06):
I think the biggest thing about Crisa and Sincere Harris
is that they're guys that love to play basketball. They're
guys that play a very aggressive form of basketball, and
it was a kind of player that you see was
in large part missing on last year's roster. You see
videos of caracrisa like kind of getting in Luca's face,
(01:43:30):
and you think, man, if you see had a guy
like that last year, and someone who'd be willing to
pick up a technical or just infuse some energy into
the team, things could have been a little bit different.
It's a culture set at its biggest point, and for Cresa,
I think it's a good move for Wes because there's
(01:43:51):
no way that he was extremely expensive and it's a
very low risk, high reward saying of if he makes
forty to forty percent of his frees, that's going to
help your offense a lot. He's also a veteran who's
played a ton of college basketball, played under a lot
of really good coaches. Tommy Lloyd played under Mark Pope
(01:44:15):
and then went to West Virginia to play under Bob
Huggins as well, so that's also something you have to
account for. And then Sincere Harris, he's one of the
best on ball defenders in the country. And another guy
who couldn't have been too expensive because you don't often
pay guards very much when they only make eleven percent
of their threes. But I don't think that they're bringing
(01:44:35):
him in to be some kind of offensive firepower. And
another guy that's played under a lot of really good coaches,
Darrin Debries and Brad Underwood in his freshman year, So
I think it's a culture setter and kind of Wes
Miller putting a line in the stands saying you have
to be you have to love basketball in order to
play on my team. And I think those two additions
(01:44:57):
are a signal of that.
Speaker 3 (01:44:59):
From a further an additional standpoint, are are we hearing
any other rumblings tied to maybe other players in the portal.
I know this is a fluid process. I know things
happened quickly as we have seen in the last couple
of days, and we'll talk about the exodus from the roster,
but are we hearing any rumblings of possible players that
(01:45:19):
may be coming in?
Speaker 8 (01:45:22):
Not really in large part. The only kind of tidbit
I can give is they went after A. J. Storer
before when he came out of Saint John's, before he
went to Wisconsin. Storer did not have the season he
wanted at Kansas, and he might be someone who would
come as a little bit of a cheaper guard and
another one who would be a kind of a bet.
(01:45:46):
And if he can be the player that he's been
in the past, he can really really help you. Now
he won't be cheap like Harris or kerk Cresa, but
he'd be someone that it wouldn't be one point five
million dollars in order to get him come to your school.
And if he hits, and if he is the player
that a lot of people think he can be and
what he showed it Wisconsin, he can really help your
(01:46:07):
offense as a starter.
Speaker 3 (01:46:09):
So as the roster sits right now, Aziz Bandego is gone,
Arrington Page is gone, Dylan Mitchell is gone. I know
Tyler McKinley will be back. This front court has glaring holes.
Regardless of the guards and the players that are coming back.
(01:46:31):
It feels to me almost vital at this point that
you land maybe two or three bigs and it doesn't
feel like a position that you can miss on if
you want to compete with what we saw in the
Big Twelve this year, Keegan, with what I watched in
the Final four and rebounding in the physicalness of those games,
how how do they need to fill out the rest
(01:46:52):
of this roster from a big man standpoint for this
team and this scheme to be successful.
Speaker 8 (01:47:00):
Yeah, I think it's kind of what you said.
Speaker 30 (01:47:03):
It's someone that's going to battle down low and someone
that they might lose a few rebound battles, but they're
going to compete for it and they have the body
and the physical statue to do so. I think of
a I think it's d Shawn Jackson, who just transferred
from Iowa State to pit and what he did in
Iowa State's games against UC and his presence down low,
(01:47:25):
and then all the other big guys like Norch had
Omer who played at Baylor. I want guys who their
favorite thing to do is to rebound the basketball. And
you've seen how well UC can play and how they
can be in games when they control the rebounding differential,
and their lack of being able to do that this year,
(01:47:46):
when on paper they were supposed to have an even
better rebounding team.
Speaker 8 (01:47:49):
Than twenty twenty three twenty twenty four. I think a
lot of that was because Dylan Mitchell's stature and frame
and so you're supposed to be someone that can really
rebound it a high level. It just didn't really fit
in the Big twelve. I think someone with twenty to
twenty five more pounds, maybe a little bit more length,
would be great. He might not be a better defender
(01:48:12):
than Dylan Mitchell, but just doing the dirty work and
the stuff that no one else really wants to do,
I think is really key and I think they might
have to approach it kind of like they approach getting
Crisa and Harris and you know, get a guy who's
really good offensively, get another guy who's really good defensively.
Speaker 7 (01:48:28):
And on the glass.
Speaker 8 (01:48:30):
And because I don't think he sees in a position
to give one point five one point eight million dollars
to a big man hoping to come in and do both.
Speaker 3 (01:48:39):
Yeah, I mean, I think if you look at the
team last year and you say, okay, as he's is
your bench guy, that's a great bench guy to have
in the Big twelve. The lack of scoring. This team
struggled to score all year, and they do have good
guard play and they have scoring coming in. Seanna Bive
can can light it up. You think with Creas and
if Connor Hickman's back and the guards are back, you
(01:48:59):
think they could score. This team, in my opinion, lacked
a player that you could throw the ball to in
the post and they could go get a basket and
they can go get their own in west Miller's system.
How important is that? Because we saw teams that were
able to almost ignore a zse on screens and played
different ways that made things really hard on the guards.
(01:49:19):
How much with a team that struggled offensively last year,
how much did they need a big they can go
get his own basket.
Speaker 8 (01:49:27):
I think they needed a lot because it takes so
much pressure off the guards and the offense. With Zi's bendego,
as you're big and someone that would have to be
the back to the basket guy, I mean that was
basically non existent. I mean, he could not score if
he was not thrown a lob or dunking. It just
(01:49:48):
wasn't there. Dylan Mitchell was kind of okay at it.
He had some moves, but again, it's just his stature
doesn't really fit to be in that back to the
basket big in the Big Twelve because the competition and
the size of the guys that he was going up
against just didn't fit his game. I think it's a
major thing because of how good Victor Lockin did, and
(01:50:11):
he's another guy who I think just really didn't fit
in the style of play in the Big twelve. But
if you can hit on that big who can get
you twelve to thirteen points and have those really good
post moves, it just takes so much pressure on you
off of your offense. Because we saw I mean, Gisel
James was taking those mid range shots all the time.
(01:50:31):
Dade Thomas again with those mid range shots, and it
worked for a little bit. But then when you face
those really good defensive teams like Iowa State, those shots
just aren't there because they can play different coverages and
it really really hurt the offense.
Speaker 5 (01:50:46):
As a whole.
Speaker 8 (01:50:47):
And I think a big would just do so much
to help them kind of widen their bag as a team.
Speaker 3 (01:50:52):
Keegan, let's talk about the exodus Rayvon Griffith, Dylan, Mitchell, Arrington,
Page Tyler, Betsy, Dan Skilling, Josh Reid. I won't get
into well, we lost a walk on point guard as well,
which you don't often see walk on point guards hitting
the portal, especially when they're freshmen. Which of these players
(01:51:14):
that have hit the portal has been most surprising to
you when you saw the news.
Speaker 8 (01:51:20):
I think Josh Reed was the most surprising one, just
knowing how much how highly Wes Miller thought of him,
and kind of how he talked about him constantly being
in the right place at the right time, playing with
a very high motor, how much the fans loved him,
and kind of best stretch of the season where he
was playing very, very good and getting getting a lot
(01:51:42):
of the flowers for the rookies. But then I think,
I think he was expected.
Speaker 5 (01:51:48):
To come back.
Speaker 8 (01:51:48):
I was definitely surprised by that entering to the portal.
I don't know what really happened if he thinks, you know,
did he want a different role, did he want to
be a guaranteed starter. Did he want money that he
just wasn't willing to give him. You have to think
one of those two is the case, just in this
current state, because when I talked to him after they
(01:52:10):
lost in the Big Tal Tournament, I asked them, like,
what would it mean to get to the NCAA Tournament
with Cincinnati? And he was very open. He said it
would mean the world to them, and that's his goal.
So something must have kind of went haywire there. The
rest of the departures, I expected, to be honest Dylan Mitchell,
mainly because I just didn't think as a coaching staff,
(01:52:33):
you can invest the amount of money in him for
someone who didn't really produce consistently enough to get to
where you want to be. And I know a lot
of your stuff about him has been he was reliable
and consistent, but on a pretty bad team who performed
pretty badly, pretty consistently. So if that style of Dylan
(01:52:54):
Mitchell is going to be the best Bill Mitchell they're
going to get, I think they should go in a
different direction. And also, he also played well enough that
he shouldn't be asking for a pay cut. I think
another team would come in and offer him a good
amount of money.
Speaker 5 (01:53:06):
To do what he did this past season.
Speaker 8 (01:53:09):
And maybe it's a better fit and.
Speaker 7 (01:53:10):
A better conference.
Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
Yeah, I just wonder a guy like Dylan Mitchell for me,
and I guess you could put Skillings in this They
did more than just one thing. They defended, they got deflections,
they got their hands on balls, they could get rebounds,
especially when Skillings was at his best, he could get
those offensive and defensive rebounds. That they were athletic, they
were able to sit down and defend. I just feel
(01:53:32):
like you lose more than just one player because you're
now trying to fill a bunch of different parts of
this team that look at times they weren't tough enough,
they didn't give the effort they needed, they got beat up,
they got out physical. It just feels like now with
so many players leaving that there are so many different
holes on this roster. How important does it now become
(01:53:55):
in what I think a lot of people will view
as a season next year that you're expected to get
the tournament. How much pressure now falls on west Miller
this offseason.
Speaker 8 (01:54:06):
Yeah, there's a ton of pressure. And I think being
in the position as Cincinnati's basketball coach and the resources
you have and the amount of nil money compared to
other schools, there is some kind of inevitable gambling that
he has to do on some of these players. And
he did the same thing last year, which a lot
of people thought it was a short bet to invest
(01:54:26):
in Jesse James, invest in dance scalings, they're going to
come back. Take that next step both the all Big
twelve guys, and then you kind of bring in a
Dylan Mitchell when everyone thinks you're put over the top,
and then it just didn't work. And the bets that
he took they didn't pay off. So I think you
just take those bets in a different direction. You can't
rely on a guy or multiple guys who have come
(01:54:49):
back to you that you expected to develop and then
they didn't. They severely played below expectations, so you just
have to go in a different direction and have a reset.
And I think a lot of it could be a
mindset thing and an attitude about the game of basketball
for what he wants to do with these new players.
But there's a ton of pressure he's and we've talked
(01:55:11):
about it, everyone's talked about it. This is probably his
last chance in order to make the NC Tournament, to
make a runner, to show that you see should continue
to invest in him as they head basketball coach. So
there's a lot of bets that have to hit, and
he already took two bets and Kirk rees and sync
your hears, which there's a lot of wide ranging opinions
(01:55:33):
on and a lot of pros and cons, and I
completely understand that. But there's a ton of pressure. And
on top of that, he has to replace an assistant
coach after Drew Adams goes to Indiana, So it's going
to be a long, tough offseason and it's I don't
really envy west Miller right now, but you have, in
large part a clean slate, a lot of money to
work with after clearing up so much money with people
(01:55:56):
leaving to the portal. So in a way it could
be kind of fun.
Speaker 3 (01:55:59):
For how much does a GM now help this team,
because again, this team wasn't good enough last year? And
now you mentioned that clean slate. I've seen that talked
about a little bit. You're bringing a GM for a reason.
What better way to bring him in than to give
him a clean slate and some funds available to go
out and try to make this roster as competitive as possible.
Speaker 8 (01:56:22):
Yeah, it's an excellent thing and it's something that I'm
sure Corey Evans is very happy about that he gets
to kind of flex the scouting and talent acquisition muscles.
But you know, in terms of how he goes about
his job specifically, I'm not really sure. I know, you know,
he was with the Thunder, he was with Rivals. He's
(01:56:43):
one of the more respected guys kind of in the
scouting and analytical game. During his time with Rivals, one
of the more respected guys in the business. So he's
got connections all over. I think in large part a
big part of adding a GM is just adding that
extra level of connection and to where you can be
in on a guy that you didn't have that connection
(01:57:03):
to before and then you can kind of say Okay,
well you were in the NBA. You got to get
down and dirty into the scouting and what kind of
players do what? How do I need to form this roster?
What are you see in the current players that have
on my roster that I don't see? I think it's
just an extra set of eyes that Wes Miller would
really really love to have. And above all else, it's
(01:57:25):
someone that he trusts. It's someone that he's known for
I think thirteen plus years. So I think Evans was
a great addition. And there's also the point of it's
basically professional basketball in terms of how you're paying guys,
so having someone having an outside opinion of how much
money is this guy worth? Is this an overpay? Is
this an underpay? I think Corey Evans is a great candidate.
Speaker 2 (01:57:48):
To be able to help with that last league.
Speaker 3 (01:57:49):
Keegan, before I let you go, how much will you
pay attention to the players that have left? Because a
lot of people noticed this year the step forward that
Victor Lockin took. Jamil Reynolds had a very good season
this year. How much do you watch Josh reed A,
Dan Skillings, Betsy Mitchell Because if they do go and
they progress somewhere else and they develop. That doesn't feel
(01:58:13):
like the best ringing endorsement for west Miller in this
staff development has been a question how much will you
pay attention to the players that have left and see
what they become and then look back to what this
program is.
Speaker 5 (01:58:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:58:26):
Yeah, I'll pay pretty closely attention to all of them,
But I think the big two will be Dan Skillings
and Dylan Mitchell. And then another one that's really interesting
is Tyler Betsy. You don't really see the high rated
true freshman come in and then leave after a year.
I think he might be one of the highest ceiling
talents out of all of them, just knowing his height
(01:58:49):
at six to eight, his ability to shoot the lights out.
So I'll probably look at those three the most just
because of the ceiling that they have. And you know,
Dylan Mitchell had so much success in Texas, and then
if a coach can get Dan Skillings right, he could
be one of the better players in whatever conference he
goes to. And you already see the list of schools
that are in on him. I think it was Florida
(01:59:11):
the day after they won the national championship, and then
again Zach Lsu Alabama, and a lot of UC fans
will look at that and discussing their head. They did
anyone just watched the season we watched because it wasn't
really it wasn't really anything worthy of that list of teams.
But that's just the nature of the game we're in.
A lot of coaches are going to be willing to
(01:59:32):
invest a lot of money and certain players because they're
confident in their ability to develop them.
Speaker 6 (01:59:38):
So it'll be fun.
Speaker 8 (01:59:40):
I loved watching Victor lockin this year and being able
to succeed. I think he fit better in the APEC
than he did in the Big Twelve, but being able
to beat Duke and hand them one of the four
losses they had on the season, that was really really impressive.
Speaker 3 (01:59:55):
You can be the best, man. I know it's an
ongoing situation. I know there's a lot of of happenings
that are going to be coming and going, and a
lot to talk about. What's the easiest way to keep
up with your coverage of everything going on with the Bearcats?
Speaker 8 (02:00:09):
Follow Kate Nicholson forty two on X and that make
sure you're subscribed to Bearcat Journal. A lot of quartal
covers have a tracker up there, who's coming and who's going,
stories about all the departures, and then obviously I'll have
stories of anyone they had out of the portal as well.
Speaker 2 (02:00:25):
That's awesome. That's Keg and nickoson one day.
Speaker 3 (02:00:27):
You're going to be before Scott Saderfield today though you
were after Scott Saderfield.
Speaker 2 (02:00:32):
Uh, Keigan, thanks for your time, man. We'll do it
again soon.
Speaker 5 (02:00:36):
Thanks.
Speaker 8 (02:00:36):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (02:00:37):
Yes, Keg and nickoson Bearcat Journal dot com. Thanks for
his time, Thank you for listening. Plenty more still to go.
Our three since e three to sixty thanks to Penn
Station on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (02:00:47):
Sixty continues on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. It's
time for Cincy three sixty Quick Hits on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (02:00:58):
Well, yeah, I heard it right there. It's Quick Hits
and Moiger is here with us. He's getting ready for
the Mouagar Show, which you can also hear on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (02:01:07):
Hi, mo Hey, how are you?
Speaker 4 (02:01:09):
I'm wonderful.
Speaker 2 (02:01:09):
How are you guys? I'm great? Great? Uh, eager to
know what's on your show? Today.
Speaker 14 (02:01:13):
Before we talk about what's on my show today, I
wanted to make a better of an announcement. Oh I'm
launching a new podcast. Oh yeah, okay, And what's it
going to be called. I haven't come up with a
name yet. But what we're gonna do in the podcast
is we're going to talk about experiences in trying to
book guests on the radio show and some of the stories.
Speaker 2 (02:01:31):
Yeah about that, Yeah, yeah, okay.
Speaker 14 (02:01:35):
It is probably easier if you wanted to interview the
President of the United States, to book the President of
the United States than it is to book somebody who
calls baseball games for Apple TV. Apple TV is doing
the Reds game on Friday.
Speaker 4 (02:01:51):
Yeah, you would.
Speaker 14 (02:01:53):
You would think, I'm I'm asking to talk to Steve Jobs,
who's obviously.
Speaker 2 (02:01:57):
No longer with us.
Speaker 14 (02:01:58):
Sure, wow, so I might My podcast is going to
be or like you get somebody on the show and
you talk about them all week and then you find
out that happened. You know, they're really busy right now,
Or like a team reaches out to you and hey,
can we get this person on to promote something, but
then you you know, later on need something from the
(02:02:19):
team and they don't return emails. So this is going
to be what we talk about on the week use ours.
On April first, Austin was contacted by Frank calliender learn
about this and I had to go through a series
of steps to may it was Frank Calliendo led to
actual video from Frank right verifying so something we can do.
(02:02:41):
You guys are allowed to contribute to this podcast. I
haven't come up with the name. Okay, but interesting that.
Speaker 2 (02:02:46):
We'll get you.
Speaker 4 (02:02:47):
I'll send you I conact to. We'll try to make
it work. All the emails I've sent to certain companies
or certain teams in town that never reply to.
Speaker 14 (02:02:56):
Me, would anybody would any of those teams be considered
a radio partner? Yes?
Speaker 2 (02:03:03):
Wow, how about that? How about that?
Speaker 4 (02:03:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (02:03:07):
You know there are sports entities in town that have
no problem asking me for my ideas on how to
engage fans more and how do we make the stadium
experience better. But when you reach out to them to
get someone from their organization.
Speaker 2 (02:03:21):
On, we'll let you know.
Speaker 14 (02:03:23):
Somehow the reply button doesn't work on their email.
Speaker 2 (02:03:26):
We'll get back to you.
Speaker 14 (02:03:27):
We'll let you know, We'll let you know, We'll see
if we can make it happen. Any of these could
be a good game.
Speaker 4 (02:03:32):
Yeah, I think we'll let you know.
Speaker 14 (02:03:35):
Or crickets, Yeah, I think crickets might be the name
of the podcast.
Speaker 2 (02:03:38):
I like it.
Speaker 14 (02:03:39):
And maybe the three of us every week just get
into a room and we talk about what happened. Yeah,
here's who we wanted to get on but didn't. Yeah,
here's who was supposed to come on but didn't. So,
and here's who doesn't respond to emails.
Speaker 3 (02:03:53):
Well, with that being said, then not knowing, maybe who's
on the show. Who do you have guaranteed on today?
Speaker 10 (02:03:57):
Me?
Speaker 2 (02:03:58):
Okay, perfec, let's go.
Speaker 14 (02:04:00):
I need So there's a really terrific draft analyst by
the name of Ryan Roberts who has joined our show
every single year. He actually also covers Notre Dame. So
we had Ryan on to talk about the Ohio State
Notre Dame game, right, and then we had him on
to talk about Al Golden. But now we're gonna do draft.
Oh okay, so we're excited for that. Our guy, Ryan
Roberts also Dante Corleone. He is the Godfather. The Godfather
(02:04:21):
Godfather is going to join us healthy four o'clock hour.
First pitch Saturday chucking out a first pitch along with
Joe Royer. So we're going to talk with the Godfather
and Ryan Roberts. We have a Reds game coming up today,
Reds and Giants. Cincinnati going for a sweep wow, Cincinnati
going for a third consecutive shutout. Cincinnati with good defense.
(02:04:42):
Like as for all the griping about the Reds and
their defense isn't perfect, but it's like winning them games
now and through twelve games, I haven't gotten that mad
at the defense. So we're gonna spend some time on that.
And then obviously what the Bengals have done in free
agency or what you would argue they we haven't done
in free agency has set them up to.
Speaker 2 (02:05:05):
Do what in in relation to the.
Speaker 14 (02:05:08):
Draft, drafts coming up, the draft's coming up, big thing
at draft draft. A team that hasn't drafted well has
put the onus on the draft in a year where
they're trying to win the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (02:05:19):
How do you feel about that, skeptical?
Speaker 3 (02:05:21):
How do you feel about Gissel James coming back to
the basketball program? How do you feel about Dylan Mitchell
leaving the program.
Speaker 14 (02:05:26):
So I'm with you on Dylan Mitchell. Man like, you know,
you're trying to fill out a roster. Dylan Mitchell cannot
be your best player. Can Dylan Mitchell be your fourth
best player? Your third best player?
Speaker 2 (02:05:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (02:05:42):
I wanted that guy back. Yeah. I'd put it to
you this way off air. If you're a Bearcat fan,
if you've had a Dylan Mitchell's playing for Xavier and
gonna play against you, do you feel great about that?
Speaker 2 (02:05:52):
Terrible?
Speaker 14 (02:05:53):
I wouldn't so I wanted Dylan Mitchell back. I'm interested
in how they replace him. I'm okay with Gigsel James
coming back. But among the many things that he didn't
do this year was get to the free throw on
on a consistent basis, show aggressiveness, and make plays for others.
There was a lot of dribbling. Some started calling him
(02:06:14):
dribble James. I don't want dribble James. I want jizzle James.
I want sizzle James. How about that?
Speaker 4 (02:06:21):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (02:06:21):
I'd like that.
Speaker 3 (02:06:22):
I think a big man would help big man roster
for him to throw it to. Well, maybe a big
man like that doesn't just clog the lane because teams
are just going to defend the lob right, Someone that
can maybe score back to the basket would seem like
a big fit or that.
Speaker 14 (02:06:33):
When they run the pick and roll and you throw
it to him, like they go, man, we don't want
him to catch it, correct because they had a big
last year. Who other teams are.
Speaker 4 (02:06:39):
Like, yeah, go ahead and throw it to him, Dude,
you gotta do.
Speaker 3 (02:06:42):
The win last night. I don't think enough can be
said about the pitching. Best starting rotation right now e
RA wise and Baseball third best team ERA in Baseball.
They've allowed thirty eight runs. It's a championship starting row.
The next closest in Nienal Central is the Cubs at
sixty two. It's been not good.
Speaker 14 (02:06:59):
They have championship caliber pitching. Yeah, maybe not world championship
caliber pitching, but they have championship caliber pitching.
Speaker 3 (02:07:05):
So I was trying to talk about this today, like
if you get into the the playoffs, which is the goal,
get into the playoffs.
Speaker 14 (02:07:10):
I'm really quick. I'm getting texts about my new podcast
names guest, no wanting to know who I'm referencing.
Speaker 3 (02:07:22):
Very rarely, Mo do we get into the playoffs and
see nine to eight, eight to seven, it's good pitching performances.
Is this just a dry spell offensively is this.
Speaker 14 (02:07:34):
It's it's it's it's a bad offensive team that has
lost guys from sure lost good players.
Speaker 3 (02:07:39):
Spencer Steers taking a couple of good games forward. Matt
McClain slight hamstring, not a real, not a normal one,
just a slight one. It becomes the latest and concerning
trends for Matt McLain.
Speaker 14 (02:07:52):
I hate to do this because it's maybe not fair,
but I remember spring training last year. Oh, we just
scratched them, precautionary, no big deal, don't don't, Hannick mor Mo,
don't make a big deal out of this. And then
dude never played a game.
Speaker 2 (02:08:04):
It becomes even bigger because you moved on from India
for this reason.
Speaker 14 (02:08:07):
So, but one of the questions that a lot of
people have had this week is, you know, like we're
talking about Hunter Green and like do you extend him again?
And how can they pay Ellie? And do they give
Lodolo a contract. Matt McClain is one of those guys
story this week about why it didn't happen. I'm not
extending Matt McClain. I'm not I'm not investing in Matt
mclan until the guy can stay and we all love
Matt McClain, we all know how good he can be,
(02:08:28):
but he's got to be He hasn't played on a
hundred big league games yet. Yeah, like that's that's problematic.
And so I think there's two issues here. There's his
importance to the team this season, and then there's what
you want to do with him long term. I think
what you're getting with the offense is an extreme example
in a in a small window of what we think
is a big problem. We don't think this team's offensive
(02:08:49):
ceiling is very high, which means their floor is low.
But you know, in the short term, can they keep
doing this? Like you're asking the pitching. It's like Joe
burrow Man, it's not the first say comparison.
Speaker 3 (02:09:01):
Let me phrase it you this way, because all we've
done about the Bengals is saying, well, they've wasted Burrow's
year and Chases year in Hendrickson's year. What you don't
want to have happen is well, they're wasting another year
of Hunter in his prime, of Lodolo in his prime,
of Elli in his prime. So I know it's not
how the Reds operate. We've talked about this on the
show the trade deadline and being aggressive. Is there anything
that can be done between now and let's say the
(02:09:23):
trade deadline that would force the Reds outside of someone
on the team taking the Joe Burrow approach, like an
Ellie's saying, and we need some help hitting, our offense
needs some help. Is there anything that they can do
that would force the hand of this organization.
Speaker 14 (02:09:40):
I think the answer is perform at a high enough
level that.
Speaker 2 (02:09:44):
Curse it on the fans to go to games.
Speaker 14 (02:09:46):
I've heard that too, the come Midsummer, Like, you know
there are two games up in the division. Yeah, and
you you have no choice, Like there's gonna be a
time where you go, screw it. We're going for it now,
screw it. Going for it doesn't mean you know, you
have no chance of winning next year down the road.
But like, they haven't done that yet, and I hold
out hope that they will do that. But it frustrates
(02:10:06):
me that it's it's early April, they have really good
starting pitching and we're already wondering what they might do
at the deadline.
Speaker 3 (02:10:12):
Yeah, this used to be the time of the show.
We would transition to locks again. When you were a
player for the Carolina Panthers. We had no problem getting
you on.
Speaker 2 (02:10:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (02:10:21):
I was happy to Carolina Panthers had an awesome PR
department that instantly returned.
Speaker 2 (02:10:26):
Our phone call. Yep, eager, Yeah to talk.
Speaker 4 (02:10:29):
He'd love to come on with you.
Speaker 14 (02:10:29):
Yeah, let's be honest, probably not dealing with a ton
of interview requests, but.
Speaker 2 (02:10:32):
Still we could get you want to hear from me?
Speaker 5 (02:10:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:10:36):
How long does he need?
Speaker 2 (02:10:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:10:38):
You have the whole show? Three hours? Was that year
one of our ten year Tony mof Football show? Did
it start when I was there?
Speaker 14 (02:10:44):
Well?
Speaker 2 (02:10:44):
That would?
Speaker 14 (02:10:45):
It feels like it like it does sometimes feel like it.
Speaker 3 (02:10:49):
There was a time in this show's history where we
would give a lock of the night in this setting,
it's not been sold. If we were to do that,
give me everything on Lucas over tonight, going back to Dallas.
I cannot There's not been many NBA games that I've
been looking forward to. Ye, I can't wait. And I
have to ask you from last night because I paid
attention to this game. Tips, there's seven pieces of hair
(02:11:15):
on the top of the head and he's using product
every night. What's going on on the top of the head?
And are you are you wanting New York to go
far this year, or you wanting New York to maybe
tank from alone.
Speaker 14 (02:11:26):
No, I don't want a tank from alone. This is
what's interesting. First of all, he uses the product. He
has like five pieces of hair on his head and
he's in the same So I think that's why he
only plays five guys. So you know how Knicks fans
like me talk all the time about the nineties. Yeah,
you know what they always did in the nineties, lost
in the second round of the playoffs. Revere those teams.
(02:11:46):
That's probably what this team is going to do this year. Yeah,
they'll be favored in Round one as a three seed
against either Detroit or Milwaukee. They have no chance that
they haven't beat the Celtics once this year, not going
to beat him four times, and so like, they've been
so irrelevant for so long that I'm still in that
zone where I'm good with this, but I don't want
him to tank.
Speaker 2 (02:12:04):
Austin said.
Speaker 3 (02:12:05):
Tibbs is one of the few coaches that has not
benefited from the casual attire on the sidelines.
Speaker 2 (02:12:10):
He looks like.
Speaker 4 (02:12:12):
Looks better in a suit, for sure.
Speaker 14 (02:12:16):
You ever seen like you ever have an uncle who
always wears workout here but never works out.
Speaker 4 (02:12:20):
That's what Tibbs looks like.
Speaker 2 (02:12:22):
Yeah, I probably got one listening right now.
Speaker 14 (02:12:24):
He looks like an accountant that goes to the office
on the weekends.
Speaker 2 (02:12:29):
And the product.
Speaker 3 (02:12:30):
Has he got like a hair and does he got
like an endorsement from a Hairjael company?
Speaker 14 (02:12:33):
You know what, I'm gonna try to get him on
because it's probably easier to get on the head coach
of the New York Knicks than it is. Apple TV
color commentator Dontrell Willis former Red Dontrell Red or Apple
Tree play by play guy Wayne Randazzo, Wayne Wayne Randazzo
