About Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsored in part by Skyline Chile.
Stop by Skyline Chili for a three way or cheeze
Coney Today. Feeling good, It's Skyline Time. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Good afternoon, Welcome in to the Tuesday addition since e
three sixty. You're listening on the home of the Bengals,
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. On a big day
here in Cincinnati, one of the bigger days in recent
memory because of what the Cincinnati Reds start tonight. Six
(00:41):
games remaining. The Reds, of course, control their own destiny.
Smells like October in the wild Card. Unbelievable stuff. We've
got to talk a lot about the Cincinnati Reds today,
and rightfully so, as again they have put themselves in
a position with what they've done and what the Mets
(01:01):
and others haven't done, to take advantage of a great
opportunity here and and punch a ticket to the playoffs.
We'll talk about the logistics what that looks like. We'll
talk about the initiative to try to pack great American ballparks.
Starting tonight, this is the biggest Red Series at home
since win.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Uh. Probably it's been a few of the last few
years that they've screwed up. Yeah, I mean they've been
in playoff contention for the last four years, three years, Yeah,
and it's just unraveled. Really going back to twe I mean, obviously,
they made the playoffs in twenty they were close in
(01:39):
twenty one. They stunk in twenty two, but twenty three
they were in contention. Yeah. Last year they were relatively
close until the very end, till the last month, right,
and here they are again. Yeah, which is why I'm
kind of you know, I'm still skeptical. I don't know
if I'm guarding my heart from being broken again. I mean,
(02:02):
I'm going to the game tonight. I'm excited about going
to the game tonight. But also I know that there
are six games, nine innings each, stand in between the
Reds and the playoff.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I mo yesterday one of the most remarkable things about
this team is that you could sit here today and
tell me they're gonna sweep the Pirates and I would
believe you. And you could tell me they'll be swept
by the Pirates and I would believe you. Yeah, Yes,
like that is just the unfortunate nature of how this
team has been throughout the season, but the resolve and
the fight that they've shown. We'll put that and talk
(02:33):
about that as we get into today's show as well.
Joe Danoman Fox nineteen will join us at one o'clock
to talk some Bengals, to talk some Reds. We got
a lot on the Bengals till to discuss. Let's talk
about some other things that happen here in segment number one.
Around the sports world. My favorite golf event is coming
up this weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I feel like it's kind of snuck up on the
Ryder Cup, the Ryder Cup this year.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Love the Ryder Cup, and they changed it up this year.
Never before or have the golfers been paid to compete
in the Ryder Cup. They are getting paid, and Scottie
Scheffler announced earlier today that they are donating everything they
get paid to charity this year. So good for the golfers,
really cool, good for the golfers. You see in Kansas
(03:16):
on Saturday, Big twelve opener for the Bearcats. We'll get
into that later in the week. You see found out
yesterday you see basketball is going to open their Big
twelve slate at home against Houston. That should be fun.
Nick Bosa of the San Francisco forty nine Ers is
out for the year after suffering a knee injury in
their game on Sunday, that is the three to zero
(03:36):
San Francisco forty nine Ers. Bruce Pearl has stepped down
as coach of the Auburn Tigers, and the Padres won
it last night in a walk off. They are in
the playoffs, and the Cardinals beat the Giants last night.
We'll get to Monday night football in a moment.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Austin.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
The sad and tragic news today and I put this
on my social media. I know you've tweeted out as well,
the passing of Rudy Johnson. Yeah, forty five years old.
The details are very unfortunate. As we've talked on this
station and this show before, the mental health issue that
(04:17):
plagues this country right now has has has taken another
one from us. Rudy Johnson was one of my favorite Bengals,
I think because the time that he was running the
ball was the time I feel like I was invested
the most growing up into the Bengals, and it just
matched that timeline of me being a diehard Bengals fan.
And the Rudy Chance, and and so much that that
(04:40):
he meant to this organization and the city and how
he was embraced that is that is about as tragic
as it can get, especially knowing again, just forty five
years old, going through some mental struggles as reported earlier,
but very very sad on the front of of Rudy Johnson.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yeah, TMZ reporting that Rudy, according to the police in Florida,
died by suicide just after midnight this morning, dealing with
mental health and issues that they think could be related
to you know, the head injuries and shots that he
took as a running back in the NFL for so long.
But you know, I think Rudy often is forgotten about
(05:23):
when you think of that era of Bengals football because
you think so much about Carson and Chad and TJ. Huschmanzada.
But Rudy Johnson was a monster for the Bengals. He
was the one who kind of took over from for
Corey Dillon and put together some of the best seasons
in Bengals history and was just as big a part
(05:44):
of those successful Bengals teams of the early two thousands
as any player, and just a fun guy, good all
around guy. Got to meet him when he came back
in twenty seventeen for the Bengals fiftieth anniversary. He was
smiling and happy and we just fans just adored Rudy Johnson.
And it's just tough man to see someone at that
(06:05):
age to deal with that sort of stuff. Yep, it's
just it's sad. And I know he's not alone, like
so many former NFL players have dealt with something like
that and continue to deal with stuff like that. And
it's not just NFL players, it's people across the country,
across the world. And check on your people. If you
need help, seek help. There are a lot of different
(06:27):
resources out there. Really sad man, Yeah, very very sad.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
We'll spend some more time on the Bengals as the
afternoon rolls on Monday Night football last night, Austin. What
a fun game to watch. It was really fun.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
It we you.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
And me and and Moe. We have a group chat
that that we go back and forth with. I tweeted
it out last night. There were times, at the majority
of the time watching that game last night, it felt
like watching a different sport than what we watched on Sunday.
It it was just it was incredible. And the attention
to detail in which the Lions operate, especially in their
running game and their short yardage and their aggressiveness. I
(07:09):
mean that obviously comes from Dan Campbell. This is a
team that had to replace eight different coaches, and people
questioned after the Week one loss to Green Bay, you know,
what is this team going to be without Ben Johnson?
What is this team going to be without Aaron Glenn.
I think the defense still has a ways to go.
But they followed that up by hanging fifty two on
the Bears and then last night in Baltimore hung thirty
(07:31):
eight on the Baltimore Ravens. It was about as impressive
as you can get for a quarterback and Jared Goff
who only threw for two hundred and two yards, but
their duo of running backs and Montgomery and Gibbs each
scoring a pair of touchdowns last night. I'm in ross
Saint Brown not only a great receiver, but a willing
and able and capable blocking Beast wide receiver. Sam Laporte
(07:52):
had a solid game. Jamison Williams is a home run threat.
Everything about their offense is what I hope and want
the Bengals to be, including the creativity in which they
utilize in their run game. At times they had they
had triple I formations in the backfield three people behind
Jared Goff. Other time they had Aman Ross Saint Brown
(08:14):
take a handoff and option pitch a ball to Jamir Gibbs.
They're spacing, they're blocking combinations, nothing, nothing feels like. It's
not run without a purpose. One thing sets up the
other that sets up another. It's just smooth.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
And even when you think of the biggest play in
the game, the fourth and one or fourth and two,
they show it's a play action duo which they've run
time and time again all game with a motion for
Moman Ross Saint Brown. And the reason that works and
the reason he's able to leak out is because he
is a willing and able and capable and good blocker
(08:54):
all game that Baltimore has to account for. And then
he takes off behind the defense and basically seals the
game with that reception and that fourth down conversion. I mean,
you're right, everything they do it works off of one another.
It's a really beautiful offense. And on top of that,
they have an offensive line that attacks Yep. They are
(09:17):
aggressive at the point of attack, they fire off the ball,
they have low pad level, they're efficient in their double teams.
They get to the second level and it's it's these
are not foreign concepts. It's not like the Detroit Lions
came up with a duo block. It's not like they
came up with power runs.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Like.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
This is all stuff that every team has in their offense.
Detroit just does it better than anybody else. They have
on their offensive line. A twenty twenty four to six
round pick, Christian Mahogany is their starting guard. The other
starting guard for them Austin is a guy that we
talked about a lot leading up to the draft, Tate
Ratlinch from Georgia. Who you know.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
When when the Bengals second round pick came around, Tate
Ratlide was still on the board. People were even talking
about going and getting Tate Ratleige in the first round.
He was still on the board in the second. The
Bengals passed on him. They eventually get Dylan Fairchild. But
I watched a rookie second round draft pick Austin operating
which in an offense and in a running attack that
(10:20):
looks like he was a five year veteran. That's coaching right, yep.
That is player evaluating from the scouting department, just like
they did with Jamier Gibbs. Remember when when Gibbs got drafted,
there was talks about, man, what he should should the
Bengals reach and get Gibbs, And then the Lions did
way before the Bengals, And you're like, wait a second,
what their player evaluating and scouting department is hitting right now?
(10:45):
Because they are building something very very unique and very special.
They hit on Jamiir Gibbs, they get David Montgomery to
pair to him, They got the Sonic and knuckles in
which they call themselves there. But Tate Ratleige last night, Man,
he jumped off the screen multiple times in that run
game behind him, And to be a rookie and I
have a lot of pressure put on you from an
(11:05):
offensive line standpoint and your head coach, who's gonna go
for it on fourth and shorten and rely on you
in those yarded situations? And it feels like they got
a good one in Tate Ratleich.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
If you remember that draft too, that they get Gibbs,
they also came up and drafted Jack Campbell which most
people thought was a reach in that situation too, But
the Lions had a very clear idea of who they wanted,
the identity, the culture, the type of player that they
wanted to build around. And you know, I think it
is in a lot of ways the reflection of Dan Campbell, who,
(11:36):
by the way, put some respect on his name. With
Ben Johnson leaving, Dan Campbell still has his fingerprints all
over the offense. Who you know, Dan of course an
offensive minded guy. Coming up with Zach Taylor in Miami
people forget. But yeah, I mean just just fun and
(11:56):
watching a team impose their will on the Baltimore Ravens
is always going to be fun to watch. It does
make me scared for October fifth, when the Troit Lions
come to Cincinnati. A little bit worried about that one,
but uh yeah, you know, as.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
John usually calls it when he calls it from ball.
He's mentioned Scott Peters before, m HM. And you know
where New England was ranked last year and now where
the Bengals are ranked from offensive Like I look at
Detroit's offensive line and their run scheme Austin and I think,
why can't other coaches, specifically the Bengals. Why can't they
watch a game like that. It's not illegal to steal
(12:35):
other teams plays, right right, Like it's a copycat league.
You can watch a game like that and you can
take things that they do and incorporate it in your
own stuff.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
When is the last time the Bengals ran a trick play? Oh?
And they have a Detroit ran two or three last night.
I think it was twenty twenty three where they ran
a double pass on Monday Night Football when Jake Browning
was the quarterback and they had Tyler Boyd throw it
and it was intercepted. I think that's the last time
(13:06):
they ran a trick path a drick play. But even
you know, I think it's one thing to like look
at those style of plays and say I want that
for this team. I think it's another thing to get
your players to be able to do it. Yeah, And
we have some audio to get to later on with
Zach Taylor. I have about what forty seconds of Dan
(13:27):
Pitcher that left me scratching my head a little bit
about the offensive line and specifically about that physicality that
we can get to. And then did you just see
this as we were coming on the air, the breaking
news about the Tennessee Titans. So Brian Callahan, of course
say Zach Taylor Disciples. Yes, head coached the Tennessee Titans.
(13:48):
He is under fire in a big way for the
way the Titans have started. Brian Callahan announced today he's
handing over the play calling duties. WHOA to quarterback coach
bow Oh heart agree? WHOA? So in the midst of
struggle and strife. Sure, Brian Callahan hands over the range
(14:09):
of the play calling. Interesting? Interesting? What a novel concept. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
On the other side of Monday Night football last night Austin,
here's the Ravens co favorites. When the season started in
the AFC, they blow the late lead against the Bills,
they lose that forty one to forty. They get right
against the Cleveland Browns, although Lamar and Derrick Henry rushing wise,
didn't have a huge impact in that game, and then
defensively they give up another thirty eight last night. What
(14:39):
do you make right now? Of the Baltimore Ravens. Dereck
Henry has fumbled in all three games this season. He
looked confused and distraught. And it's weird because I don't
think in the second half. He was running as hard
as I normally recognize him running. This is a team
in Baltimore now one and two. They go to Kansas
City and the Texans and the Rams come into town.
(15:02):
This obviously important because the Bengals do still sit at
two and one, as bad as it's been. What do
you make of the Baltimore Ravens right now?
Speaker 5 (15:09):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (15:10):
I think they I think they're going to be fine.
But their offensive line, as we talked about preseason, is
a question and their secondary is a question. And when
you take away Lamar and his ability to escape and
you rely on those receivers on the outside to win
one on one, it didn't happen very often. And I
(15:31):
think Detroit did a great job of taking away his
escape lanes and they really gave made Mark Andrews beat them,
and a couple of times he did. But you know,
Rashod Bateman's a Flowers, DeAndre Hopkins nowhere to be found. Yeah,
just a weird watch when Derek Henry keeps fumbling, Yeah,
I mean crashing out on the sidelines. Yeah, that was
(15:54):
a crash out. Kind of felt that man is, like
you tell it's the first time he's ever gone through this.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yeah, what's going on? What's happening? Great play by Aiden
Hutchinson by the way. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
Four. I love the Lions like I root for the
Lions if it is tough, because Aiden Hudgson is a
big part of it. And I you know, I, yep,
wouldn't walk across the street to see Aiden Hunty. Yeah,
I get it, I get it.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Uh, we'll talk more Bengals, We'll talk more Reds. We'll
talk to you five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty.
We got plenty more to go. We're just getting started.

We have a statement from the Cincinnati Bengals today.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Yeah. Coming in just about a minute or so ago,
the Bengals released a statement on the passing of Rudy Johnson.
It says that the Bengals more in the passing of
former halfback Rudy Johnson, a Pro bowler who played for
the team from one to seven and is among the
top rushers in franchise history. Quote from Mike Brown, Rudy
was a fine person and an excellent running back for us.
(18:37):
He was dependable and productive as a player, and very
popular among his teammates. Everyone liked him and saw him
as a dear friend. We are deeply saddened by his passing.
Mike Brown, Bengals President, of the passing of Rudy Johnson.
Let me ask you a question. I thought of last
(18:57):
night watching the Lions game. They made mention a couple
times last night of the edge rusher position for the
Lions and injuries that they have sustained. Also, the news
yesterday was that Nick bosas out for the remainder of
the year for the San Francisco forty nine Ers. The
Bengals sit here today Austin at two and one. If
a team like the Lions, who are I think a
(19:18):
Super Bowl contender, or a team like the San Francisco
forty nine Ers, who are three and zero have played
well to start the year, if one of those two
teams were to call the Cincinnati Bengals and inquire about
Trey Hendrickson at this point of the year, are you listening, Yeah,
of course you're always listening. Doesn't mean you have to
trade him? Sure, what would it take for you to
(19:39):
move on from them? I would like to see where
they are at, because that's a hard thing right there.
Two and one in a few weeks.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Yeah, Like so, to me, that's the hardest part because
if you look at just the AFC as a whole
right now, the Bills are going to win the AFC East.
I don't think the Patriots are there yet the Jets
and Dolphins are done. In the AFC South, you've got
the Colts at three and oh. The Jaguars are two
(20:08):
and one, but you have a tie breaker over the
Jaguars because you beat them heads up. And then the
Texans and the Titans are both zero and three. And
in the AFC West, the Chargers are the only team
with a winning record. They're three and oh. Denver one
and two. You play them this week with a chance
to put some gap in between you and Denver. Kansas
City is one and two. We just talked about they've
got to host Baltimore coming back this year. So it's
(20:30):
for me, it's how to the next couple of weeks go,
Because as of right now, you're one of six teams,
six teams in the AFC out of sixteen that have
a winning record. So you have to look at that
if you're the Bengals, and you still have to operate
as if you're all in right, yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
I mean at least for now. I mean, I still
believe it's way too early to punt on the season.
And if you trade Trey Hendrickson today to the San
Francisco for then you're telling that entire locker room and
all your fans that you're punting on the season. And
I don't think the Bengals believe who they were against
Minnesota is who they are I don't believe that's who
they are either. I think they're a better football team
(21:12):
than that. That being said, they obviously have a lot
of work to do, and the schedule is very difficult. Denver, Detroit,
Green Bay, Pittsburgh coming up. The NFL trade deadline is
November fourth at four pm. That is going into the
Bengals bye week. We obviously know that the schedule lightens
(21:32):
up a bit, or at least it's supposed to, with Pittsburgh,
the Jets, and the Bears. Going into that trade deadline
slash bye week. Where they are then, I think will
determine the way they approach the rest of the season. Yeah,
if they're competitive, if they're in it, if they have
a win over Pittsburgh, especially then I feel like the
(21:53):
Bengals will continue all systems go, especially if there is
a remote possibility, any possibility that Joe Burrow comes back
late in the season. You have to continue to in
the way that they have spent money. I don't think
they would punt if they're in it now, if they
win one game between now and then, maybe it's a
(22:15):
different story out of the next four and maybe Zach's
gone at that point too.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Is this week the most winnable out of the next
four or is it the home game against Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
I think it's the home game against Pittsburgh. Aaron Rodgers
is not playing well. Yeah, this need and it's a
home Thursday night AFC North game. I mean, Paul has done.
Paul Danner Jr. Is who I think is gonna be
on with motor Day. He's done extensively the research on
how difficult that is, especially in the AFC North. Yeah. Yeah,
I think that's still the Bengals' best chance of the
next few.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Problem is you're going into a Denver opponent now that
has a heartbreaking loss on the road against the Colts,
heartbreaking loss on the road against the Chargers. Now they
return home at one and two. I would imagine Austin
the talk in Denver is it's a must win. You've
got to match that intensity if you're the Bengals for
a team that's gonna come out swinging in Denver. Because
(23:06):
if you're Denver and you drop to one in three
and you don't see the progression from bon Nicks after
the Bengals. Then they go to Philly, then you're staring
at some legit trouble. If you're the Denver Broncos, a
team that a lot of people pick to advance or
even win their division, this is this is going to
be a tough, tough game on Monday. It already was,
but going into it with a team that's lost two
(23:28):
tough ones in a row, bocks up against the wall
at home very good defense, that is a tall, tall
task if you're the Cincinnati Bengals. But again, as things
or if things look similar to what they did on Sunday, again,
you don't have to wait until the trade deadline to
make a move. If you're another team, I wonder if
(23:51):
they would start getting phone calls and if you're listening
to those phone calls if you're the Cincinnati Bengals. Because
the other aspect that I worry about with this Austin
is locker room mess. If you were to move on
from Trey Hendrickson, what message are you sending in the
locker room? Well, we're packing it in. I mean, you
could you could say all the right things that you know,
we're still in this. But the message in the locker
(24:12):
room if you move on from your best defensive player
would be we're punting. I don't know how well that
would go over in the current state of the Bengals
locker room. Yep, I think you've got to worry about
that going forward. I already wrote down today that I
think you got to worry and want to see the
fight that this team shows going forward. That gets harder
(24:33):
if you move on from one of your best or
your best defensive piece.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
At this moment.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
It is a very unenviable task if you're the Cincinnati
Bengals right now and you're trying to piece this together.
There's also the the oddity, Austin, I'd sent this to
you yesterday, the snap disparity, the snap count and how
few plays Logan Wilson got in this game. And then
there were his comments after the game of you know,
(25:00):
that's kind of what the coaches want. He played it
of because he really didn't know what's going on, and
maybe you just take it as well. It's a one
game sample size. It was a blowout. You're getting other
guys in. I'm very interested to watch Logan Wilson's snap
count this week.
Speaker 3 (25:14):
I have the audio if you'd like please or hear
it please.
Speaker 8 (25:17):
That was a position coach's decision, So do that way
you will.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
Was that surprising for you?
Speaker 8 (25:24):
He told me about it before the game, just trying
to keep me healthy.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
So I don't.
Speaker 8 (25:29):
I'm just gonna I'm not gonna complain about it. That's
what he wanted to do, and that's what we're gonna do,
I guess, so we'll go from there.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
How do you take that tone from Logan Wilson, He's
pissed off. Yes, I don't blame him.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Told about it before the game, which tells me that
even before the game got to be out of hand,
they were going to limit his snaps.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Yeah. I think Logan at times this year has been slow,
has not gotten to the point quickly enough, like he's
taken the wrong He has had several injuries the last
couple of years that have understandably slow him down. He
is coming off of an offseason knee surgery, and they
drafted two linebackers and signed another one. So unfortunately for Logan,
(26:09):
this is part of life in the NFL where you
got to fight to keep your spot. So part of
it is I'm sure keep him healthy. The other part
of it is also, hey, you need to play better
because if not, we got these young dudes that we're
gonna see what they have. It's weird.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
There have been numerous snaps this year where he's taken
the wrong path to the ball and where he's gone under. Yeah,
they're going under blocks when they are supposed to be
going over or fighting around.
Speaker 9 (26:34):
Like.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
It's just weird some of the angles they've taken. And
to have that be a conversation going into the game,
and it's certainly by that tone, Austin doesn't sound like
that's something that Logan Wilson wanted to be doing.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
I think that's also something to monitor as you go
forward as well. Some of the other questions with this
Bengals team still reside in the quarterback position.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Do you go get a quarterback?
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Dan Graziano ESPN said, So, we'll discuss that a little
bit and uh, something that we're gonna call.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Zach said, what huh?
Speaker 2 (27:07):
What did he say? We'll get to that when we return.
We'll also get to some of your phone calls here
now at number one, five, one, three, seven, fifteen thirty.
It's since e three to sixty on ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 7 (27:19):
You've been listening to Football in the NATI on ESPN
fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
Loegar players are allowed to have bad games.
Speaker 7 (27:34):
He's a man with a one track mind.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Good players are allowed to have bad games.
Speaker 7 (27:38):
Where should I say us sports track mind? It happens
Moeger Today at three on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Ball means Foot.
Speaker 10 (27:50):
First match for Mean Swicks finds it in a center
field settle to its ready for.
Speaker 11 (27:55):
Mean, walks it off as Bryce Johnson scores and the
Podres get it back to the playoffs in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 12 (28:05):
It was never going to be easy, but the Padres
walk it off in the best possible way.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
That is how it sounded that Austin was the Padres
punching their ticket to the playoffs last night and walk off.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
Fashion walking off the Milwaukee Brewers. That was what it
sounded like on the San Diego Padres Radio Network.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
That is our call of the day, brought to you
by our friends at wind Shulers. Wind Schulers Delicious Cheese spreads.
Don't ask why, Austin, just taste why Oh. When it
comes to tailgate parties, the bold, fresh flavor of wind
Schulers spreadable cheeses takes a back seat to no one.
So make sure there's plenty on hand when your party
(28:56):
kicks off. Thanks to our friends at wind Shulers. Grab
a couple of phone calls here, and then we will
get to something that we're just going to call. Zach said,
what what's up?
Speaker 3 (29:08):
John?
Speaker 13 (29:09):
Good afternoon, fellas in the case of misery love company.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Good afternoon, How are you John?
Speaker 4 (29:17):
I'm okay, I'm okay.
Speaker 13 (29:18):
I hope that Joe Burrow watched that game last night
in its entirety because he probably was shell shocked to
see what a really good offensive line looks like.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
Right.
Speaker 13 (29:26):
I mean, Jared Goff to me, is a really good quarterback.
He's kind of a poor man's Borrow. Joe Burrow is
a better quarterback, There's no question about that. But I
don't know if Jared Goff had to take a shower
after the game or got touched. And that offense was
just so splendid, and Tony and Austin you mentioned.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
It early in the show.
Speaker 13 (29:43):
They had to replace the interior of their offensive line
after last year, the center retired, whoever else retired, someone got,
you know, signed as a free agent, and they put
those pieces together and man on some of those runs,
I could have run from those holes.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
They were gigantic.
Speaker 13 (29:57):
And then obviously the pass protection just really frustrating to
watch because I think you guys agree, most important unit
on a football team, most important position, most important unit
is the offensive line. That gives you your snarl, that
gives you your attitude. You saw that last night.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
They have an attitude in the way in which they
block in the run. Because they're so dominant in the run,
it sets up more flow from the linebackers to hit
you with play action, and then they attack you on
every level in the passing game. They can dump it
off quick, they can hitch you intermediate. I'm and Ross
Saint Brown is fantastic, and then they've got Jamison Williams
to beat you over the top.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Every level is covered. But you're right.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
For a team that had questions on the offensive line
and had to rebuild the offensive line, they surely knew
who they were and what they wanted to be. When
they chose who they were getting Tate Ratlige is one
of them. Is a guy we talked a lot about
going into the draft. He's playing extremely well. We know
the Penne Seoul conversation. But they they protect and they
(30:53):
have an attitude and it to me, it literally takes
on the feel of their head coach. They don't question
fourth and short. They're going to go for it fourth
and fourth and short, about the fifty yard line. Late
in the game, they're going to go put the game away.
They don't want to punt the ball back and let
another team have a chance. They take on the identity
of their coach. It feels like in every aspect of
(31:14):
the game.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Without question.
Speaker 13 (31:17):
And I think we have to elevate him to one
of the six or seven best coaches in the sport.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Maybe he's not the best at.
Speaker 13 (31:22):
X'es and o's, but he puts his assistant coaches in
position to do that, and he is an incredible motivator
in those players buy in to him so much. And
again I go back to the front office. A lot
of this is investments. Scott Peters was let go by
the Patriots. They're still paying him. He's your offensive line coach.
Jerry Montgomery was a Patriots defensive line coach. Last year
they gave up over five yards per carry. So he
(31:44):
seems to be a good hire, right, you want to
come in and help your defense. Let's take a cast
off from a team that was worse than you last
year defensively, So bring him in and see what he
can do. It all goes back to dollars and cent
You have to invest in assistant coaches, head coaches. That's
the most important thing. Look what Detroit did after twenty
twenty three. Ben Johnson was the hot ticket. He was
supposed to go to Washington be the head coach. Well,
(32:04):
Detroitt stepped up and paid him, made him the highest
paid offensive coordinator of the sport.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
That's what you do.
Speaker 13 (32:09):
You invest in coaches and all that other stuff. And
that's something that Cincinnati just doesn't do.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
Just wanted to wrap.
Speaker 13 (32:14):
Up one quick thing, you know, example two seventy five
of how this offensive line is so soft. And we
talked about what happened against Jacksonville, but if you remember
a final game last year against Pittsburgh AFC North battle
playoff spot on the line, he's playing the steels. You
know it's gonna be a physical game. Late in the game,
Joe Burrow gets body slammed by two Steelers.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
No call.
Speaker 13 (32:34):
There's grass in his face, there's grass in his grill
of his helmet. He looks like he was concussed. I
didn't see one offensive lineman have an issue with that. Like,
at that point, you're gonna go up forget the officials
because they're not gonna call anything. But you go up
in the face of someone from Pittsburgh and said, what
are you doing to our quarterback? And you make something
out of that.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
He just kind of, you know, went back.
Speaker 13 (32:53):
To the sideline and said, well, hopefully he's gonna be okay.
I mean, did they not like the Christmas gifts? He
got them samurai swords, which really appropriate for those offensive
limbing guys, right. I think diapers, rattles and pacifiers would
have been better off. But it's just frustrating to watch
these other teams. You'll see Buffalo do the same thing.
The offensive line really does such a great job that
the quarterback has it's so much easier than Joe Burrow does.
(33:16):
He's he's basically swimming upstream.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
Yeah, John, thank you for the call, man. We appreciate you.
You know, Austin from Tate Ratalage last night. This was
as the game ended, so I haven't seen the updated grading.
Thirty pass blocking snaps, zero pressures allowed for Tate Ratlage.
Now here's the thing, Austin Demetrius Knight may turn into
(33:39):
a very good player for the Cincinnati Bengals, an excellent player.
Can you make the argument that that was more of
a need than what the offensive line was, or do
you think the Bengals genuinely thought Fairchild was going to
be their guy?
Speaker 3 (33:53):
I think they probably really liked Dylan Fairchild and so
far he's been fine, And you mentioned earlier they probably
could have rafted both of them, Yeah, and filled both
guard spots. Yeah, there's there's a chance that that was
the case. But you'd also be running it back with
Jermaine Pratt more than likely in that scenario. Or you know,
I do think that they really looked at last season
(34:16):
and thought they got unlucky and had a bad defense.
So they said, let's fix the defense, bro, and the
offense will take care of itself. And it backfired on them,
backfired a bad way. Up to this point, Mike is
calling him, what's up? Mike?
Speaker 5 (34:31):
Hey, guys, I think it was classy that you brought
up to the passing of Rudy. Really got me upset
a little bit. Gives me an opportunity to mention how
many combat veterans can the suicide every day. The ratio
to their general population is staggering, and it's mostly from Vietnam,
Iraq and Afghan guys. Yeah, I just want to pray
(34:56):
for Rudy's soul and for his family, And again I
appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
Bringing that up absolutely.
Speaker 5 (35:02):
You know, last night, let's just face it, Detroit dominated
both lines as scrimmage. It didn't matter either side. It
didn't matter Baltimore's. Baltimore's defense on the front line was
not good and the offensive line theirs was not good.
I mean, they got dominated. And when you brought up
(35:22):
Dan Campbell, he's the kind of guy that's the difference
between Vac Tiller. I mean he he motivates that team,
and it's it's got to be him that does it,
especially with two new coordinators coming in. Very impressive human being.
Dan Campbell's all I gotta say. I don't care about
the x's and oh's. That's what you have your offensive
and defensive.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
Coordinator for I watch him on the sidelines, and I think,
of that's a head coach in my opinion. He's not
calling plays offensively, he's not calling plays defensively, but he's
sure as heck sets a tone and when it's a
fourth down, he's making that call, Hey, we're going for this,
and he's got faith in the offense. And if the
offense doesn't do it, then he's talking to his defense
because he's got faith that the defense is gonna go
(36:04):
out and get a stop. They had two ninety five
plus played or ninety five plus yard drives in one
game in Baltimore last night. That's a mindset, that's an attitude,
and that comes from your leader as a head coach.
Speaker 5 (36:19):
Yeah, I was hoping you would say that because I
didn't know if you would agree, because I thought maybe
I was a little overreacting to his domineering personality. But
it's kind of infectious, isn't it, ton.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
I think so.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
Yes, the way the team acts and embraces him, you
could tell how how much of a fan they are
of him.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
Anyway, it was surprising to everybody, of course, but I
was happy get with Baltimore's butts line with me any
day or a week. I just don't like the Bengals
winning any of these X three games. But I wish
him luck, but I don't see it happening. Tonight we
got the Reds at Kiel Levy. This kid pitching for
Pittsburgh tonight, Johann Oviedo. He's a big dute. He's six six,
(37:05):
two seventy five. Maybe the Bengals could do that.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
Can he play guard tackle?
Speaker 5 (37:11):
He might? As wild as he is, he throws a
lot of he walks a lot of guys.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
That's his problem.
Speaker 5 (37:18):
But he is two and zero or three point five two.
He's coming back off an injury. But he did beat
Milwaukee on at the beginning of the month. Yeah at Milwaukee. Uh,
he went a little over five and he's only gave
up one run and only one or two hits. But
he walked through. He struck out four five and he walks.
He seems to walk at least three guys every game.
(37:39):
And if you walk Alley or one or McClane or
one of these guys, get that motorcall, watch out right.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
Yeah, it's it's a guy.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
It's unique because they have to be selective at the
plate and as much as We've talked about the atmosphere.
This is an offense that struggled for much of the year.
I just hope they don't press on the offensive side
of the ball because that does not help at all
when it comes to playoff baseball.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
If you press, you start swinging at stuff.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Maybe you're not you're not trying to do you try
to play hero ball and hit the ball out of
the ballpark. It's just you got to play it like
another game. But the atmosphere and everything around it tells
you it's not. And you got a lot of young
players on the team. I think it'll tell a lot
about this team tonight and and what kind of grip
Terry Francona has on them, because that's why you bring
in a coach like Francona.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
And let's hope for Cincinnati brothers turn out tonight, pack
that joint and do what they're supposed to do. If
I could be there, I'd be there. I don't care.
If I sat in the top row, I.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
Would go yep.
Speaker 5 (38:37):
But good luck tonight, brads, and take care.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
Of those Thank you, Mike, appreciate it. Thanks Mike. Let's
grab Mark's call real quick and then we'll get a break.
What's up, Mark, Hey, how's it going?
Speaker 4 (38:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (38:52):
I was sad to hit the passing the Rudie my
memory of him, I'll be quick that Kansas City game
and they came in undefeated, and to me that was
just coming out party when he ran all over there
in that game. On the Reds, I'm worried about this
series because they seem the struggle against bad teams. I'll
(39:15):
be there, but we'll see what happens. And then on
the I was very impressed that Brian Callahan decided to
give up place all the duties he might have earned
hisself another year because he was willing.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
To take a back seat and say, hey, it's not
what I'm doing.
Speaker 14 (39:32):
It ain't working, so let me let somebody else. As
Jimmy Johnson said, you delegate that stuff and manage the game.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
And you take pressure off yourself and the fact that
if the offense now struggles, the finger's not going to
be pointed at you the whole time. It's probably, like
you said, buying some time for your coordinators.
Speaker 14 (39:51):
Okay, then okay. On the game with Detroit last night,
I'm already righting that in as a loss. The way
I saw that offense fro running. I don't see the
Bengals defense stopping that offense. And uh, you know, they
lost they lost a center, they lost their coordinators, and
that offense looked like it ain't missing the beat. So
(40:14):
you know, you are allowed to do play action passes
and throw the ball across the middle of the field
with the tight end, and then on fourth down you
could do another play action pass crazy and sending the
wide receiver oute. That was gonna be a first down anyway,
because that was all that got held him before he
could get out on his route. So under center play
(40:37):
action that works.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
And then as Austin said, Mark, thank you for the
phone call. Austin, you and you hit it on as well.
It also worked because throughout the game they use aman
Ross Saint Brown as a blocker in those sets.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
Yeah, they motioned him in, he blocks, they motioned him out,
He blocked.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
And then he sets the block and then takes off
down the field and he's wide open and he gets held.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
Yep. It's just everything matches. That's what makes it so impressive.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
One other NFL move that just happened, Austin Russell Wilson
has been benched Jackson dart Era starts in New York.
Don't throw the ball away on fourth down, Well, don't
throw it away on three of the four red zone plays. Unbelievable.
Russell's the backup, which means Jamis Winston still third team,
which means maybe he'd be available for the Cincinnati Bengals.
(41:27):
We'll rot you hour number one. Would you want Russ?
I'd let Russ come cook. Absolutely, I'll know by that.
We'll take a break. We'll finish up hour one next.
And we got Joe Danoman to get to the top
of our number two since he three to sixty. ESPN
fifteen to thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 5 (41:45):
YELEXA, what's going on in baseball?
Speaker 7 (41:47):
Getting ESPN fifteen to thirty from iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
Welcome back since ESPN fifteen thirty, thanks to Skyline Chillie,
Thank you for listening. Joe Daniman will join us in
just a few moments. We still have to get today
to Austin to some audio we have from what Zach
Taylor had to say yesterday, and you have some audio
of Dan Pitcher real quick, the uh the conversation there
(42:20):
that that Mike had with Pittsburgh and pitching and Mark
d do you worry at all about the added playoff
pressure for this offensive lineup? They struggle already. They're not
a consistent offensive lineup. I don't care who you are
and what you say. There will be a different pressure
when you get to the ballpark tonight. Yeah, and it's
(42:41):
a young team. It's also part of like the whole
pack gabp thing. There's gonna be some some energy there.
I don't expect it to be forty five thousand people
in a sellout, but there's gonna be some energy there.
And you are gonna be expected to win the game
because of the opponent that you're going up against. And
so how do they handle that? I think I've felt
(43:03):
like I've seen Gavin Lux leading from the front, some
Jose Travino leading in the front. Those two guys played
the World Series against each other last year.
Speaker 4 (43:13):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
They need to be the ones stepping up and being
leaders in this moment.
Speaker 2 (43:19):
So yeah, I just when I think about it, I'm like, Okay,
you know, I always think about the Quato moment when
he dropped the ball, sure, and I'm thinking, man, it's
just a different feel when you play in a ballpark
and there's not the added pressure. You're you're kind of
playing out the season and then all of a sudden
boom nationally, you're being talked about they're going to pack
(43:40):
the ballpark. It's going to be more of a raucous
environment for a Tuesday night. There's going to be pressure
when you take the field for a predominantly predominantly young
team with not a lot of postseason experience. How much
can you rely on lux And like you said, Travino,
how much can you rely on Terry Francona. This was
(44:00):
why you got him right. He knows this, this avenue,
he knows this realm, This is up his alley.
Speaker 3 (44:09):
There was a moment in that CUB series where Tyler
Stevenson asked Terry Francona if he wanted him to bunt,
and Francona said, I want you to hit it in
a third row. And I hope that that is just
a like, okay, he has my back, like I don't know,
a sigh of relief, a weight off the shoulders of like,
(44:31):
all right, I can't be afraid to hit a home run.
Here I can try to hit a home run and
not every situation is gonna, you know, require you to
try to hit a home run. Sometimes you just got
to get the guy in from third base anyway you
possibly can. But like it does feel like there has
been this f itt we ball type of mentality about
them offensively, where they're trying to hit the ball out
(44:52):
of the ballpark. Now they've won two games one to nothing.
It's not always going to work, but you should be
able to. And what I've loved about the Cub series
is that they won games in multiple ways that will
benefit them, and that they have confidence in winning in
multiple ways with homers, with small ball, with pitching all that.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
Yeah, I think early on is going to be a
pretty good indication of the tents or tightness that they
have or that they don't have. And I think that'll
be a direct correlation because I think there is at
a pressure being at home. I think on the road
it's different because you've been in road environments having it
at home. What the ballparks should feel like tonight. I'm
interested to see how they respond. Can't wait to talk
(45:35):
to Joe Danmon about that and more on the Bengals
when we return to kick off the second hour of
Since he three to sixty on ESPN fifteen to thirty

our second hour on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon, our guy
from Fox nineteen, joe Daniman, joining us right now.
Speaker 10 (46:36):
Joey D.
Speaker 3 (46:37):
What's up?
Speaker 4 (46:38):
Tony b audie E? What's up? Fellas?
Speaker 16 (46:41):
So?
Speaker 17 (46:42):
Right before I came on, Okay, so, I was killing
a couple of minutes waiting for Austin to call me.
I was taking back to the nineteen ninety nine Red Seed,
which to me, I was around for nineteen ninety, so
that will forever be my favorite team.
Speaker 4 (46:55):
But outside of nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety.
Speaker 17 (46:57):
Nineteen when I was in college going to school with
a bunch of Mets fans in the Northeast with my squad, okay,
and you think about the parallels of the nineteen ninety
nineteen to what this team is doing right now. That
team in nineteen ninety nine had a final weekend series
in Milwaukee in which they needed to win two out
(47:18):
of three against the Brewers the clunch of playoff spot,
and the Brewers were well below five hundred, weren't a
great team. They lost the first two and then they
won that Sunday in a game that was delayed by
range for several hours, played later in the night, and
then they had to play the one game playoff against
the Mets. So with the Brewers and the Mets all
(47:38):
tied together again, I'm having this nineteen ninety nine PTSD.
What's crazy about that team? And you think about how.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
Much baseball has changed with the expansion of the wild card.
Speaker 17 (47:49):
That team in ninety nine won ninety six games and
did not make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (47:55):
I remember that game, Joe, because I was there. My
aunt took me and my cousin and we sat up
near the top and all I remember was how cold
it was that night and how dominant outlighter was that night.
Speaker 17 (48:11):
Yeah, five nothing. Let me share one quick story from
that Milwaukee series. So my sister was going to school
at Marquette at the time, and she's from Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (48:20):
She's a Red fan.
Speaker 17 (48:21):
She waited out the entire rain delay and again, I
think it was like six or seven hours of a
rain delay. And that's right around when Adam Sandler.
Speaker 4 (48:29):
And Billy Madison movies were big. And remember the that
Veronica Vaughan is one fine piece.
Speaker 17 (48:34):
Yes, she made a sign that said that Greg Vaughan
is one fine piece. And she stuck around and God
bless her. She was one of the few people there
to watch the Reds clinches spot to play the Mets
in the playing game, a game they did not win.
Speaker 2 (48:54):
This series that starts tonight, Joe, how does this team
handle atmosphere? It's a relatively young team. Terry Francona was
obviously brought in for a reason. But whatever you say
or try to say, it will and should feel different
when you enter the ballpark tonight for the Cincinnati Reds.
It's an offense that has been clunky at times, inconsistent
(49:17):
at times. How does a young team like this or
can a young team like this prepare itself for a
playoff atmosphere and the pressures that.
Speaker 4 (49:26):
Come with that.
Speaker 17 (49:27):
Yeah, and I think it's a reasonable question to ask.
But it feels like this team has been playing playoff
games now for a couple of weeks. And you talk
about the lineup and the inconsistencies with the hitting all
season long. That to me been the biggest difference here
in the month of September, where they played themselves back
in the position to have this kind of week.
Speaker 4 (49:48):
Started Great American Ballpark.
Speaker 17 (49:50):
It just feels like the lineup now doesn't have as
many holes. And you know, I put on Twitter recently
how different the team looks when Spencer Steers hitting with
this kind of power, hitting with this kind of run production.
But to me, it's the seven, eight to nine spots
that had been such a difference for this team. When
you go back and look at this team when they struggle,
(50:11):
there were a lot of easy outs at the bottom
of the lineup. Whether it was Matt McClain couldn't figure
out what he was doing, whether the catcher position just
wasn't producing, whether it was Santiago Espanol in the lineup.
There were nights when it just felt like you only
really had three or four guys you had to deal
with and pitch carefully too. Now it feels like, but
(50:31):
noel Vie Marte back in the second half of the season,
playing the way he's played with Matt McClain, if you
look at the numbers since the end of August, has
been a very productive player. And now will Benson thrown
into this mix. It feels like this is a lineup
that's gotten longer, more dangerous, and has more guys that
can beat you on any given night. And to answer
your question about how these guys will react in this moment,
(50:55):
I feel like they've been playing these kinds of games
for a couple of weeks. I feel like they're ready
for the moment. But the question is will they actually
execute in the moment. That's what we're going to find
out starting tonight against Pittsford. The other part of this, too,
is if I'm the Pirates, this is our world series.
I'm coming to Cincinnati and managing and playing this series
(51:17):
like this is what we want to do with the
end of our year is we kept the Reds out
of the playoffs. So it's a fun series on deck
and great American Ballpark. I can't wait to see how
it plays out, especially with the pitching matchup that's tomorrow
Night of Schemes against Hunter Green. That's gonna be so
much fun. This is everything Reds fans wanted, and the
Mets meltdown is open the door for the Reds, and
(51:39):
the Reds have take advantage of it. But to answer
your question, how they react, we'll find out starting tonight.
Speaker 4 (51:44):
I can't wait to see it.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
I had a conversation with Moe yesterday a little bit
about the rotation. Hunter Green is scheduled to go tomorrow
against Paul Skins, but by doing that, you might not
make them available if you need them for Game one
sixty two. How, if any, would you adjust the rotation
at all or are you good with saying, hey, it's
Brady Singer night. We don't want Hunter Green on short
rest because you want to keep the schedule as.
Speaker 3 (52:08):
Normal as possible.
Speaker 2 (52:09):
Would you have looked to change that around at all
or do you like how they just keep the rotation?
Speaker 4 (52:14):
What It's been a two part answer.
Speaker 17 (52:17):
I like the way Brady Singer has pitched. I would
keep Brady Singer in line to start tonight. And secondly,
I think it might be a good gamble on Terry
Francona's part to have Hunter Green lined up for Game
one of the wild Card Series. That's how little faith
I have in the New York Mets at this point.
I don't know what the Mets is in New York,
(52:40):
but I've been watching them closely now for six weeks,
almost two months, because I knew they were going to
be part of this race, and to watch that meltdown
of epic proportions has been fascinating. I mean, think about this, guys.
So before the Cub Series started last Thursday, the Reds
were twenty six and twenty since the All Star break,
(53:03):
three games below five hundred, and they had played themselves
to only two games behind the Mets. That's how bad
New York has been. And we now expect New York
to figure it out against the Cubs. Team who buy
the law of averages should play better and should win
some games this week. And in the Miami Marlins, who
are a hot and b have always given the Mets trouble,
(53:24):
especially at the end of the year. I think it's
a good gamble by Terry Francona that the Reds are
in a good enough position that they can pitch Hunter
Green on normal rest and then have Hunter Green available
to start Game one of the wild Card series. So
I like where the Reds pitching staff is.
Speaker 4 (53:41):
Right now, the way they lined up. I would keep
it as is, and the Reds are doing so. Plus selfishly.
Speaker 17 (53:47):
To see Paul Skins against Hunter Green in a playoff
race with a handful of games left, it's outstanding. It's
great drama and I can't wait to see that.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
How much of a role do you expect the torpedo
bats to play in the playoffs race?
Speaker 3 (54:00):
Here?
Speaker 17 (54:03):
I completely forgot about torpedo bets. Man, it's amazing how
much how long it is.
Speaker 4 (54:08):
That feels like years.
Speaker 17 (54:09):
Ago where that was a thing. I will say this,
as far as torpedo bats go. That made me think
of Ellie, the starting pitcher tonight for the Pirates. If
you haven't haven't started diving into the numbers the last
time he pitched against the Red Ellie, Spear and Benson
all had big games.
Speaker 4 (54:27):
Against this guys. They all had multiple hits.
Speaker 17 (54:30):
They got to him early, they roughed him up, they
had him knocked out I would say by the fourth
or fifth inning. So the three guys that I would
kind of circle tonight for for guys that can carry
this Reds offense, would be those three. I just like
the look of Spencer stear right now. Certainly it feels
like Ellie and the pressure has been taken off a
(54:50):
little bit by getting that home run. And then Will
Benson's added another dynamic to this team. So those three
guys have had success against this picture pitcher for the Pirates,
and those are three guys I'm looking for tonight.
Speaker 2 (55:03):
I know it's impossible to ask as we switch gears
to the Bengals, Joe, how do you even put into
words what you witnessed on Sunday with the collapse in
the first half and how the team finished the game
and it just it was a comedy of airs, obviously.
Is it a one game sample size that you move
on from or there are serious serious issues right now
(55:26):
in your opinion with what this team has going on
outside of not having Joken.
Speaker 4 (55:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (55:31):
I think both, and I think the important thing for
us to do, and by us, I mean people talking
about this game and even fans who are watching this
game and having intelligent conversations about the Bengals and the
rest of the season. Is to see what we saw
on Sunday and think about that in the big picture
and try to figure out, well, what's the fluke and
(55:52):
what's the season long concern And the fumbles returned for
touchdowns and the tip passes. I think each of those
can take on a life of its own. And there's
a lot of flute that happened in that game, and
the Bengals let go of the rope and forty eight
to ten happened. But this is such a week to
week league. I fully anticipate the Bengals will have a
(56:16):
good performance on Monday Night Football, and the Bengals will
have a chance to win that game.
Speaker 4 (56:21):
I think a lot of times in.
Speaker 17 (56:22):
Professional sports, especially in football, where there's a week to
sit on it and think about it, that can challenge
athletes to perform.
Speaker 4 (56:31):
At a level much higher than they played at the
week before.
Speaker 17 (56:35):
I fully expect the guys like the Ted Terris and
the Orlando Browns who have kind of been put in
the crosshairs a little bit this week to perform better
on Monday Night. But there are season long concerns, and
I don't think I'm reinventing the conversation here when I
say that the run game is right now a five
alarm fire.
Speaker 4 (56:55):
But that also goes with the fact that they.
Speaker 17 (56:58):
Played really, really tough defenses to run on.
Speaker 4 (57:02):
Now.
Speaker 17 (57:02):
If the Bengals are playing and they will play teams
that they could run on later in the year, if
they mixed one of those games in and had a
good running game, then this conversation wouldn't be so biting.
Speaker 4 (57:13):
But I just feel like the timing of.
Speaker 17 (57:16):
The way it's looked, Joe Burrow's injury and the run
defenses they've faced, it's really started to highlight some roster
construction issues when it came to the offensive line of
the guys they handpicked to play these spots in what
their strengths and weaknesses are, and right now their weaknesses
are showing up. So to me, that's the season long
(57:36):
concern is can they run the ball at a clip
well enough to be competitive and take pressure off Jake Browning.
I'm not sure we're going to get a good read
on that anytime soon. Considering the opponents that are coming
up here the next few weeks of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (57:52):
When you look at the play of Jake Browning, obviously
you can't lead the NFL in interceptions as a backup
and expect to keep your job comfortable for much of
the season. Are you still exhausting other avenues as to
maybe another quarterback out there that you can make a
move for, not to come in and start immediately, but
to get them up the speed in case what we
(58:13):
saw against the Vikings continues against Denver and so on.
Or are you riding it out with how the quarterback
room currently is.
Speaker 4 (58:20):
Somewhere in the middle.
Speaker 17 (58:21):
I think it's always the conversation that you have and
you take any calls and conversations people might want to
bring to you. But at this point it's kind of
a mood conversation for us to have because the Bengals are.
Speaker 4 (58:36):
Going to ride with Jake Browning.
Speaker 17 (58:37):
I don't see anything changing unless this were to go
drastically south. And at what point did the Bengals still
feel like they can salvage a season by taking on
whatever payroll it might be for a new quarterback to
come in. So it kind of feels like at this
point the Bengals are married to Jake Browning for the
(58:58):
foreseeable future. And it feels like this Monday Night for
Jake Browning and this team takes on a really, really
important moment for this team because at two and one,
it sounds stupid to say it, but the Bengals are
a first place team. Sure at two and one, and
we know what's coming after Denver. It's the Lions and
(59:21):
the Packers and two teams. Right now, it doesn't feel
like the Bengals can be as constructed and with their
current health. So if they can get to three and one,
that gives them a cushion to drop both of those
games before the schedule starts to ease up. And I
know the Steelers are waiting on Thursday Night Football after that,
but that's not a non winnable game. And then you
(59:44):
have the Jets, the Bears, the Steelers, the Patriots win
winnable games in a runway for this team to put
themselves in position for the second half to be a factor.
So this Monday night feels like it's circled. It it's
the Waterloo, it's it's proving that team can stay in
the race for into November, because I think there's a
(01:00:04):
shot for the Bengals to win games if they get
this thing figured out on Monday night. So for Jake
Browning and the entire team, this Monday Night, to me
takes on so much more added importance than we ever
thought it would this early in the season. But it
kind of feels like a moment here for this team
to prove that they can stay in this race bow
(01:00:25):
for at least a couple more months.
Speaker 3 (01:00:27):
Joe, I have described the Bengals as soft and slow
up front on the offensive line. The word physicality has
been brought up the last couple of days. How do
you get from a group that doesn't feel like it
has a lot of physicality to all of a sudden
does feel like it has a lot of physicality? Like
(01:00:48):
is it just as simple as being embarrassed against Minnesota
and everybody talking bad about Jake? How why should fans
believe like there is a turnaround with that group up front?
Specifically those names as you mentioned, like Ted Carris.
Speaker 17 (01:01:02):
Well, I think the one thing you could you could
lean on Austin is that they have done it before.
That that that Ted Carris and Orlando Brown have been
good players here uh in Cincinnati, you know, but you
know attrition years age, that that stuff affects their ability
to do their job at the highest of levels.
Speaker 18 (01:01:23):
Uh.
Speaker 17 (01:01:23):
Can one week of people throwing darts at them, uh
and them being in the crosshairs of criticism motivate.
Speaker 4 (01:01:31):
Them to play a certain way? I think that's that's
a hope.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Uh.
Speaker 17 (01:01:35):
Certainly, I think they need to be put in position
by a scheme that helps accentuate that a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:01:42):
But the fact that all.
Speaker 17 (01:01:44):
Of them have openly talked about it and admitted it's
a problem from from both head from both Orlando and
also Zach Taylor as well. Uh, certainly seeing it on tape,
living it what they've done here a few weeks, and
there have been clips going around that we've all seen
(01:02:04):
that have not been pretty, especially for Ted Carriss coming
out of the Minnesota game. And he's the guy who
will readily admit that he hated the way he performed
and he thought it was a horrible performance. And we'll see,
we'll see how we respond. But I think the fact
that these guys have played at a level high enough before,
(01:02:25):
especially in the run game, that I think you have
to kind of lean on that and hope they can
find that after a really, really poor performance in Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
One of those keywords for me, I look at the
locker room and you obviously get a feel of this
by being around and being in the locker room and
getting a pulse on things. But does it feel like
the locker room still believes? Does it feel like there's
that fight and the thought of we can go do this.
We believe in Jake Brown and we heard that last week.
It didn't show up in the game, But seeing and
(01:02:56):
being around the locker room, do you get the sense
that there is that confidence belief?
Speaker 17 (01:03:01):
I would say, ask me on Thursday, when the Bengals
are back to work and talking about the Monday Nights
football game. I can tell you Monday it was. It
was quiet, but not contentious in there. It was a
lot of accountability, and it's been a lot of accountability
all season long from specific players.
Speaker 4 (01:03:20):
That we've spoken to. So I think we'll have.
Speaker 17 (01:03:23):
A better read on what it feels like inside that
room with the Bengals get back to it on Thursday.
But but when you're when you're two and one and
you have a cornerback that they do believe in.
Speaker 4 (01:03:34):
And again I go back to this, This is not
lip service.
Speaker 17 (01:03:38):
The Bengals do believe that Jake Brown and can help
them win games. But can heat help them beat elite teams?
Is my question? And elite teams are on deck for
this football team coming up. And the other part of this,
two guys is listen. You know, we can sit here
and circle and talk about how important this game.
Speaker 4 (01:03:56):
Is for the Bengals. It's just as.
Speaker 17 (01:03:58):
If not bigger, for Denver considering where they're sitting right now.
So it's two and one, it's three weeks in prideful
guys who have taken accountability for the way they played.
I firmly believe the Bengals will perform better Monday Night.
Will that be enough for them to win? To overcome
(01:04:19):
an opponent that I look at right now as a
like opponent if they had Joe Burrow, But the Bengals
don't have them.
Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
So I think Denver is a better team right now.
Speaker 17 (01:04:30):
But I do believe the Bengals will show up and
play better football on Monday Night. I just don't know
what the way they're constructed right now if that's enough
to win that game.
Speaker 4 (01:04:39):
On the road.
Speaker 3 (01:04:39):
It's heard the Sad News earlier this morning about the
passing of Rudy Johnson. Joe, did you have any Rudy
Johnson stories or moments or anything that come to mind
when you think of Rudy.
Speaker 17 (01:04:52):
A few things that come to mind with Rudy and
So when they were in town for the anniversary, I
snapped a great picture of Rudy Johnson and Chad together
and I took that picture and I cannot find.
Speaker 4 (01:05:07):
It in my phone.
Speaker 17 (01:05:08):
If anybody can find it, I'm sure I tweeted it.
I've been looking for that picture all afternoon because I
remember taking that picture and Rudy wanting me to send
it to him, and I told them both on that occasion,
I said, I know you guys realized this because you
were part of it, but sometimes when you're in the
middle of it, you don't realize that you guys made
(01:05:30):
football fun again in Cincinnati after everything the nineties were.
Then the Marvin Lewis era started, and it felt like
Rudy and Chad were two of the engines behind bringing
competitive football back to Cincinnati. The moment I always think
with Rudy Johnson as the touchdown he scored in Pittsburgh
in two thousand and five in December when the Bengals
(01:05:52):
and the Steelers were in a race to win the
AFC North, and it was his touchdown in the fourth
quarter that really sealed the game for the Bengal and
it kind of was a changing of the guard in
a moment where the Bengals had finally beaten the big
bad Wolf, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and we're going to win
the division. Rudy was a great dude, a guy we
could go to at all times and get a great
(01:06:14):
SoundBite in a great interview, and he was such a
workhorse man.
Speaker 4 (01:06:18):
That guy hit a forty three carry game in two
thousand and three.
Speaker 17 (01:06:24):
That's impossible for the twenty twenty five mind to wrap
itself around. So good Guy, I think was just one
tier below being a Ring of Honor guy. I would
say he's one of the better Bengal running backs of
all time and certainly one of the better Bengal players
in the last twenty five years. Really sad, hard day
(01:06:45):
for Bengals fans because Rudy J. Was a guy Bengals
fans loved, adored and could depend on. That the guy
took the Rock all the time and was a great
football player here in Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
He'll be messed.
Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
Joe, you're the best man. What do you guys got
coming up with Fox nineteen this week?
Speaker 17 (01:07:01):
So think about this Saturday night in Milwaukee. We're all
pointing towards this weekend right as possibly being the moment
where the Reds.
Speaker 4 (01:07:09):
Clinched a spot in the playoffs for the first time
in five years.
Speaker 17 (01:07:13):
Fox nineteen is carrying Saturday Night's Game Baby, Big Moments
for the Reds.
Speaker 4 (01:07:20):
It could be Saturday Night Big Game on Fox.
Speaker 17 (01:07:23):
Also Tomorrow night, Bengals now live in Newport. Rookie linebackers
Demetrius Knight Brett Carter will be our special guest.
Speaker 4 (01:07:31):
Get to Newport tomorrow night at six o'clock.
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
Awesome, Joe, thank you so much for your time. As always,
we'll talk next week. Joe Daniman, Fox nineteen getting a
start at an hour number two your talkbacks of course
next thanks to Cincy Shirts, ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Datum.
Speaker 3 (01:08:09):
Come on now, come on now, I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:08:17):
Massive talk back day and a massive sports day here
in the city of Cincinnati. Thanks to our friends here
at CINCI. Schortz we'll give away a gift card on Friday.
Why is it so massive? The reds, right and the Pirates,
That's why it's massive. Gotcha? And it's an off day
for the Bengals, which means nothing bad can happen, we hope.
Speaker 3 (01:08:36):
Yeah. What was the quote yesterday from the President. I
don't know nothing bad can happen, only good happen. Okay,
something like that, Tony Austin, Jeff from as would Hey, Jeff, Well,
all right, Jeff, I talked.
Speaker 19 (01:08:51):
A lot about how the Bengals is gonna win a
Super Bowl with Joe. Well, we got no more, Joe.
That's a toe.
Speaker 3 (01:09:01):
So anyway, I still got faith in them.
Speaker 19 (01:09:05):
They needed humbled. They won two easy ones. They got humbled.
They'll be back.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
All right. It's a huge game on Monday, y'all. Do
they respond?
Speaker 12 (01:09:19):
Look at Joe Burrough getting his butt kick.
Speaker 20 (01:09:22):
Three bad injuries and six years, three bad.
Speaker 21 (01:09:26):
Injuries and six years.
Speaker 10 (01:09:28):
The offensive line always lets us down.
Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
The offensive line always lets us down.
Speaker 21 (01:09:36):
Now, go tell Old Duke Tooby, go tell Old Joe.
Speaker 20 (01:09:41):
Rogan, Evan Lyndell, Jason Kendall, in Chad Rndall.
Speaker 4 (01:09:45):
Thessive line always lets us down.
Speaker 3 (01:09:49):
Man, that is fantastic.
Speaker 6 (01:09:52):
So what's up everybody?
Speaker 3 (01:09:54):
You know?
Speaker 6 (01:09:55):
Actress performance on Sunday? Should they are Rogers Meddle name
being mister because it definitely was his neighborhood there in Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (01:10:02):
And what a game last night between the Lions and
the Ravens.
Speaker 6 (01:10:05):
Isn't it amazing when you have a front office and
the coaching staff that knows what the heck they're doing. Yesterday, Tommy,
I said burn to take to move on. You said,
definitely burn them, but watch them first. But does it
really matter when you have a coach of staff they
still can't prepare after they watched game fields.
Speaker 2 (01:10:21):
Man, I hope, I hope that those coaches were watching
that game last night.
Speaker 10 (01:10:26):
Hey fellas, it's Vinnie.
Speaker 22 (01:10:27):
I'm here to be the voice reason again. Last Tuesday,
you guys came to your senses over the borough. Loass,
I'm hoping today after you hear this talk back, Alton,
you'll calm the freak f down.
Speaker 23 (01:10:38):
Man.
Speaker 22 (01:10:38):
The year the Bengals went to Super Bowl got thumped
by the Browns was horrific. Following year they got thumped
by the Browns, it was horrific. Went to the SC
Championship last year thump by the Eagles won five stree
at the end, and last night Lamar Jackson got sacked
six times.
Speaker 3 (01:10:53):
You know what, though, he's not made.
Speaker 24 (01:10:55):
A glass oh Man, Wow, triple signetti. Oh James Madison
Bloomington dominating performance over Illinois Champagne last Saturday night. A
toast to the Hoosiers one talkback Part two, triple hook
(01:11:17):
forty eight to ten. I remember the Homer rice Bengals days.
I hope it gets no worse. Recharge the batteries.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
Got that extra twenty four hours this week. Yeah, we
got some time. This is DJ. I'd give the guys
two point last night for.
Speaker 25 (01:11:34):
Beating the Ravens or just dominating in the North Detroit
gave us a master class. Be physical in the trenches,
run the ball, control the clock, take your shots with
the passing game because you set it up properly, tackle efficiently,
especially with Lamar. Unfortunately, the Bengals are set up to
do any of this because the team was not constructed properly.
(01:11:55):
It isn't coached well.
Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
I get it.
Speaker 26 (01:11:58):
Yeah, Kaho, Nick Kentuck, have you've seen the video forty
one to three in Chase just gets out of the
way of a block I did to Seki. They're saying,
you know, he's trying to do whatever he can to
get Taylor fire one.
Speaker 3 (01:12:09):
I hope he is.
Speaker 26 (01:12:10):
I mean five and twelve, six and eleven is not gonna
do it. I'm in for two at fifteen, three or fourteen.
He's got to give up fifty a couple of times.
Taylor's got to get Rayan and it's gotta be quick,
and Golden's got to go with it. And then I'll
ask again what I asked about a month ago, or
what I said, who's closer to a championship?
Speaker 11 (01:12:25):
Reds are Bengals? Definitely the Reds. Man by how that
table's turned. I just will never root for my teams
to lose so that people will get fired. That I
don't believe. Would you rather just nine and eight every.
Speaker 27 (01:12:39):
Year Tuesday, Tony and Austin and Shim and Ross. And
at the start of the season, I said, the Reds
won't give you the Blues.
Speaker 18 (01:12:45):
They'll win more than they lose. I think that's so,
let's win right into the playoffs. Now the Bengals, I
gotta take on them. I don't think anybody addressed if
they're not going to change their scheme. They're not.
Speaker 27 (01:12:58):
And if they're not gonna change their call player, they
need to find some guys on offense.
Speaker 18 (01:13:02):
That can tackle. I'll let that sink in for a second. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:13:07):
Yeah, good tacklers on offense very important.
Speaker 4 (01:13:13):
Wow.
Speaker 28 (01:13:14):
Wow, watch the game last night Detroit Baltimore. Maybe they
could show some tape of that Detroit offensive line blowing
the Baltimore defensive line back two to three yards from
the snap under center. Maybe that'll get a long game going.
Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
Who did the under center stuff is more of a myth.
You have to be built a certain way, and they
were without not A Bouquet.
Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
And Kyle Van Nooy last night.
Speaker 20 (01:13:44):
I'll tell you one thing about Joe Burrow potentially being
out for the season is I could sit on my
couch and watch the Bengals game with no stress, no hope,
no anxiety. I could just sit there and watch the
game and be like, Oh, Jake Browning through his fourth interception?
Speaker 3 (01:14:08):
Who cares?
Speaker 5 (01:14:10):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
I can I can never go into a game if
I'm watching the game, I can't just be like, oh,
I'm just gonna watch this and relax.
Speaker 3 (01:14:18):
I can't do that.
Speaker 21 (01:14:20):
It's the Lord on a still miserable Tuesday. I gotta
start to bench cut commercials that you're tired of seeing,
Peyton Manning commercials, Jason Kelsey commercials, or Patrick Mahomes commercials.
Speaker 3 (01:14:38):
I'm gonna start Jason Kelsey because I've seen a lot
of those. He looked good in the band last night.
I'm gonna bench Peyton Manning because I think his are funny.
I'm gonna cut Patrick Mahomes because he doesn't really have
that many. Yeah, I'll swap Manning and Kelsey. G fellas.
Speaker 29 (01:15:00):
I was in Minnesota this weekend, but automobile, uh general,
but a great time minus the Bengals game. I don't
want to talk about that at the deal. Hope Hopium,
hope hopeum. Let's win four out of the next six,
sneak into the playoffs and see what happens.
Speaker 4 (01:15:18):
I've left this team to die thirty six times this year.
I'm back on the wagon.
Speaker 18 (01:15:22):
Boys, Let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:15:23):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:15:25):
Can you imagine if like that was your trip? Like you,
A lot of people pick one road game a year.
I feel like I'm gonna go through that in Green
Bay too. Also your yes game, you will yeah, hopefully
not that bad.
Speaker 30 (01:15:37):
Yeah, congratulations to the Reds. I thought they were gonna
make the playoffs, then I gave up on them. I
definitely think they're going to make the playoffs. I think
this town, after thirty five years, they've lost some of
the locker the Reds. Maybe they can get it back.
I I am way more physical than the Bengals offensive line.
Speaker 3 (01:16:00):
I believe that. I believe that to be true.
Speaker 31 (01:16:04):
Hey, guys, for in Atlanta four Tony, you made reference
to the Bengals looking unprepared. Takes me back to Opening
Day twenty twenty four where they played the Patriots. It
appeared that they didn't even know they had a game
that day. So not only is Zach Taylor dumb, he
(01:16:27):
is a terrible motivator.
Speaker 3 (01:16:30):
He's a four. He did got a thunder yeah huh.
Speaker 32 (01:16:36):
After hearing the passion at Rudy Johnson. I certainly hope
that we can, somehow as sports fans, take a chance
to remember and keep an eye on those younger people
that are coming up now and the guys that are
playing today, and we can learn from the mistakes of
the past, and people can get help for these injuries
(01:16:56):
that they don't know about. It's very unfortunate that a
man passes because of the love of a sport.
Speaker 3 (01:17:03):
God blessed Well said, let's.
Speaker 33 (01:17:06):
Keep talking about should the Bengals get a new quarterback
decided to get one in a free agency It's really
not gonna matter. The reason why is because your offensive
line is still horrible and your goal line is is
just as that. So it doesn't matter who you put
out there. Who you're gonna put Jameis Winston, it's not
gonna matter. You're still gonna have the same less time
to throw the ball with your offensive line. So I
would just keep running and just say the season's over with.
Speaker 3 (01:17:28):
Oh man, that's a dark way to look at things.
I kind of agree with him, though.
Speaker 23 (01:17:33):
Hey guys, first and foremost rest in peace. Rudy sent
out photos on my threads and my old Rudy thirty two,
a lot of sad face in the just really liked
Rudy Biens Ravens. Last night was awesome. Filled me with
awe filled me with dread thinking about that match up
versus our O line Tony Addie talkback Nation question, how
can we rise up and amplify this forum, step out
(01:17:55):
of our shared misery and apply real pressure on this
organization actively instead of in our echo chamber of sorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:18:02):
Wow, go Red, I don't know echo chamber sorrow, echo chamber.
Speaker 4 (01:18:07):
We need Chumber more than never.
Speaker 3 (01:18:09):
Jake Browning's a back of for Red Burrows better.
Speaker 17 (01:18:17):
To Burrow's better.
Speaker 34 (01:18:18):
I'd rather do spreadsheets in Excel indefinitely than Watsack Taylor
call another playoff besively. Lou Ammarello has a Coast de
Fest playing tremendously. We are Kirsten Cincinnati perpetually.
Speaker 3 (01:18:37):
It's another song that might be Cincinnati. Make some noise
right now.
Speaker 26 (01:18:45):
I'm with Red like I'm at a Cincinnati game.
Speaker 10 (01:18:49):
Reds fans and direct your chips.
Speaker 6 (01:18:51):
Who Croker Meal deal, Get a bag of chips, a dog,
and a drink, all for ninety ninety nine, the Croger
Meal Deal.
Speaker 4 (01:19:03):
Hey Yeah, Haino Sware.
Speaker 3 (01:19:08):
Hey Austin, Hey Tony.
Speaker 35 (01:19:09):
I'm glad you guys brought up the game last night
with Detroit Dan Campbell watching us on Sunday and watching
that team last night. Dan Campbell and Detroit Lions make
Zach Taylor and our team look like they should be
playing arena ball in Poe Dunk, Arkansas.
Speaker 3 (01:19:24):
There's no comparison.
Speaker 35 (01:19:25):
They're out there, they're hitting, they're not getting pushed around.
Speaker 3 (01:19:28):
They're not playing like candy asses. And they're coaches and
a candy ass either. They Oh what was it? The two? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:19:39):
Oh sorry, it's the wrong But prayers for thirty two
and his family rest in peace, Rudy. Thank you to
the Detroit Lions for beating those classless Ravens in front
of their classless fans. Wow, thank you for that. And
(01:20:00):
Lamar Jackson coming out looking like Rick James on Monday
Night Football.
Speaker 3 (01:20:06):
What are you doing all right?
Speaker 18 (01:20:17):
Hey, guys, Marcus from the grove.
Speaker 16 (01:20:19):
I've been torn about resetting the rotation for this week.
A part of me says, don't because it's me being
selfish because I'm going to the game tomorrow, so I
want to see Green versus Skeens. But then again, if
Sunday turned into a must win, I kind of want
your ace on the mound. And I'm not a big
(01:20:40):
fan of setting up your rotation for the postseason if
you don't make it.
Speaker 4 (01:20:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:20:45):
I also think tomorrow you have Green against Schiens, and
you know, like one run could win the game. Yeah,
And so if that's the case, I would almost rather
have Hunter Green pitching against ball Skiins because I know
it's gonna be the same way for Pittsburgh. They're gonna struggle,
(01:21:06):
so I get it. I also wonder, you know, in
that situation, could Hunter Green come in the game on Sunday, Yeah,
if they really need him to. Also, I would assume
Chase Burns will be ready to go today for sure. Well, again,
those guys are not you. I mean, Hunter Green is
different than everybody in the starting rotation right now.
Speaker 36 (01:21:28):
But Tony Austin Jack Irvin College child quick talkback rip
Rudy Johnson. When I think of my childhood back, that's
my guy. You know, hate to see that kind of
stuff happen. You know, don't have expectations for the Bengals
going forward. I'm not actively rooting for the tank yet,
but you know, once we maybe find a way to
two and four, if that happens to be the case,
(01:21:49):
then you know, top five pick, That's what I'm going for.
Been off my talkback game lately. My wife and I
just had our second baby, first born son.
Speaker 3 (01:21:56):
So shout out to Miles. Congratulations Miles to Miles.
Speaker 37 (01:22:02):
I would be remissed if John fram monhealthy did not
give a tribute to Rudy Johnson, probably my favorite Bengal
player of all time.
Speaker 4 (01:22:13):
In two thousand.
Speaker 37 (01:22:13):
And five, I named my beagle Rudy after him, actually,
and Rudy lived on to be fifteen years. He was
a very long living beagle. So man, tough day. I
loved Rudy Johnson, one of my favorite players. Rest in peace,
Rest in peace, Rudy.
Speaker 3 (01:22:32):
Thank you, Johnny, Tony.
Speaker 38 (01:22:34):
Austin George in the valleys so fired up for the
Reds game tonight. I'm I'm gonna watch this one go
the next two. Oh, I think you happen to slip
up tonight. Probably not cond be I listen to this
show tomorrow because I'm gonna hear Austin be.
Speaker 3 (01:22:45):
Like I see, I told you so.
Speaker 38 (01:22:47):
I'm just not listen to that negativity, but excited to
hear about Rudy Johnson's family. That's really sad. A two
thousand and a lot of days, Austin still still going on.
Speaker 3 (01:22:59):
Yeah, it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:23:00):
He's not gonna go to the game tonight but the
next two because he knows you're going tonight and he
don't want to cross pass with you.
Speaker 3 (01:23:04):
Yeah, he's ducking.
Speaker 39 (01:23:06):
No hard Boston, Tony oh Man grumpy here, doesn't grun
up yesterday. Listen to all the guys jumping off the bandwagon.
Uh two and oh to.
Speaker 4 (01:23:17):
Two and one?
Speaker 39 (01:23:17):
Five turnovers, a scoop and score a pick six. That
doesn't happen every week. I don't expect them to be
a great team, but they're gonna be better, and they
were at Minnesota. Who knows what will happen, but.
Speaker 2 (01:23:31):
Yeah, if they're not as good, if they're if they're
like what they were at Minnesota, it's gonna be a
long year.
Speaker 10 (01:23:38):
Tony Austin in here, Hey, I think they'll bounce back.
It's just too crazy for a football team to lose
like that. But if they don't and that continues, I mean,
the blood is on the hands, and we shouldn't be
looking at Zach Taylor. We should be looking beyond that.
(01:23:59):
They deserve to sweat.
Speaker 16 (01:24:02):
Okay, come to the feast of sacks and strips.
Speaker 38 (01:24:08):
Come fist your stats at upe being goals, Come pad
your stats.
Speaker 21 (01:24:15):
With the pigs six.
Speaker 5 (01:24:17):
Pe high grade on the being goals.
Speaker 21 (01:24:22):
We can't win the game without any line, no pocket.
Speaker 5 (01:24:28):
Here on the beals.
Speaker 2 (01:24:33):
Okay, Okay, okay, we're done. By the way, Russell Wilson
would cost you two million dollars the rest of this year.
Joe Goodbarry tweeted out seventh round pick for Russell Wilson,
pay him two million. Is Russell Wilson better than Jake Brown?
That is one of the craziest things you've ever said.
(01:24:55):
Right now, Is Russell Wilson better?
Speaker 3 (01:24:57):
Yes? Two weeks ago he just threw for like six
hundred yards against the Cowboys. Yes, which I could throw
for a hundred against the Cowboys, four hundred and fifty yards. Okay,
I'm just I'm What do you do against the Bengals?
That was a serious question. What do you do against
the Bengals? Last year? He checked down Charlie and made
Jermaine Pratt miss all day. Jermaine did not tackle, and
then the second time around he was awful. He threw
(01:25:19):
for like six hundred against the Bengals last year the
first game when they just checked it down to the
running How many receiving yards the running backs having that game?
Four hundred of them they needed? Jermaine Pratt said, we
didn't miss any tackles. He missed seventeen himself. Well, he's
not missing him this year. That was a serious question.
(01:25:40):
Russell Wilson's not good. I don't know that Jake Browning.
Speaker 18 (01:25:44):
Is good either.
Speaker 3 (01:25:44):
I'll say he's better than Jake brown That's fine. That
was a serious question, all right. I wasn't like trying
to be facetious, like is he actually better than Jake Browning.
I don't know that it's that big of a difference.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
And I think for two million, I think it would
sure I get it, kick the tires on that we
got football.
Speaker 3 (01:26:01):
I think that would be extremely detrimental to the locker room.
When's the last time you heard a teammates say something
about how much they love Russell Wilson. I think a
lot of his teammates like Russell Wilson. I think they
all cringe at him because he's corny.
Speaker 2 (01:26:15):
I think a quarterback signing would send a message to
the locker room that they are going all in still.
I think the longer you ride it out with what
they have, I think it says we're just content slipping
into the abyss got easpell abyss a lot of ESS's
and I think there's a y in there. Football in

Speaker 2 (01:26:55):
Yes, football in NATI means we talked about football here
on Cincy three to sixty. Just a moment here, not
just about the Bengals. You see, Austin opens up their
Big twelve schedule. This is the second Big twelve game
for Kansas, but the first for the Cincinnati Bearcats. They
take on or they travel to Kansas. It's an eleven
am local start in Kansas.
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
Noon here.
Speaker 2 (01:27:16):
It's a TNT game, I believe, but you can hear
the game on the station right there down the hall.
Kansas one loss on the season, it's at Missouri. That's
a good Missouri team. They lost forty two to thirty
one on the road. You see, potentially could be without
Dante Corleone. We will find out more as the week
goes along. Most said this yesterday though, and I agree
(01:27:36):
with it. This game, for me is what kind of
the season hinges on. If you're the Bearcats. If you
find a way to win in Kansas, you start thinking
about the path forward and what the Bearcats can do
if not. You follow that up with Iowa State, ranked
fourteenth in the country, coming into town U s F.
Speaker 3 (01:27:52):
And then you do get to go to.
Speaker 2 (01:27:53):
Oklahoma State, who's not gonna have Mike Gundy because they
fired Mike Gundy today. No longer a man, no longer
forty my Gundy out. No, he's still a man.
Speaker 3 (01:28:03):
Okay, he's not well, as far as I know, he's
still he's well over forty.
Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
Yeah, yeah, but that is what the Bearcats have coming up.
We'll talk more about that game as the week goes on.
For now, one more break, a touch and go and
we'll get to our number three. Since he three sixty,

Speaker 2 (01:29:38):
We are now in the third and final hour of
since E three to sixty on this Tuesday afternoon. The
final hour for today doc Fast Today it is. It's
been a fast show and we've still got quite a
lot to get to here in the third and final hour,
including Zac Taylor said what there were three things that
stood out to me Austin yesterday when Zach Taylor was
(01:30:01):
speaking to members of the local media coming out of
the Minnesota game, in which they lost by thirty eight.
That was the worst loss in franchise history. We have
a couple of clips here. Can we start with the
clip in which Zach Taylor has asked about the defense
(01:30:22):
that they have been going against and the inability to
get the running game going.
Speaker 3 (01:30:25):
Which one was That was that one? Two? Or three?
That was clip number one?
Speaker 40 (01:30:28):
Okay, No, I think as a unit, we got to
be better in the running game. We have to do
a great job identifying the scheme that we've got a
lot of confidence in to be able to give the
running backs opportunity, and our guys need to step up
and do a great job with that scheme. And so
I think it's unfair to put it on a player.
It's on all of us offensively collectively to find a
better answer. I do think that we've we've faced three
(01:30:50):
challenging defenses early in the season. You can't make an
excuse for that. We've got to find our way to
put pressure on them and stop saying it's about the defense.
There's got to be moments where or we attack the
defense and put them on their heels, and we just
got to find some momentimum drives to be able to
do that, and yesterday we were far from finding momentum drives.
Speaker 2 (01:31:08):
Okay, now I will I'll take this from what Moeger
said yesterday, when do we start playing defenses that we
can run against. Well, it's just we've played some really
good defenses and their schemes have just pretty much been
better than ours. That can't be an answer. It cannot
(01:31:28):
be an answer going forward anymore for this team of well,
just playing against a good defense. You have to find
ways to have success. You mentioned I think the number
yesterday Austin. I saw this from I think Ross Tucker
retweeted it yesterday as well. Chase Brown forty seven carries
for ninety three yards this season. He has negative fifty
(01:31:49):
four yards before contact, minus fifty four yards. That's a
real stat. Another stat about the run offense from Joe Goode.
Bengals run block grades from PFF over the years. In
twenty twenty they were the twenty first ranked run blocking team.
Twenty twenty one, they were twentieth twenty twenty two, they
(01:32:10):
were twenty first twenty twenty three to twenty second. Last year,
they were twenty ninth This year, often three games in
they are graded at a thirty seven point eight. That's
dead last in football. To put it into perspective, the
Bengals are nine point nine points lower than the thirty
first ranked Saints. The Saints are grading nine point eight
(01:32:32):
points lower than the seventeenth ranked Broncos.
Speaker 3 (01:32:35):
That's how big the gap is. So basically a twenty
point difference between the thirty second ranked Bengals and the
thirtieth ranked whoever that is.
Speaker 2 (01:32:45):
It's insane, and the conversation becomes, well, we're just playing
good defenses. Every defense in the NFL is good, Every
defense has good players. Every team in the NFL has
coaches that are going to try to outscheme you. It
is your job as a head coach to find ways
(01:33:07):
to get your rush defense or rush offense better.
Speaker 3 (01:33:12):
He also said in that clip, though, a couple of
the right things, which is, we have to identify a
scheme that our guys are comfortable with and can be
effective about, can be effective with. So that is putting
the onus on himself and the coaching staff to figure
out what do our guys like to run, what are
they good at running? How can we make this easier
(01:33:36):
on them? And he also says that we can't just
wait for defenses to see how they're going to play us.
We have to attack defenses. So he said those two things,
which I agree with and I think he's right about
and I want my coach to say, but I just
don't know if they have the personnel to be able
to do that.
Speaker 2 (01:33:54):
I'm just I'm so just done though with hearing well,
it's very good defense. Yeah, a lot of defenses are good.
They're going to try to take things away. That's the
whole point of this. In the National Football League, it
just can't be well, it's a good defense. Guess what
Denver is a good defense? Detroit did not allow Baltimore
(01:34:20):
after the first drive to do much on the ground
last night. That's a good defense. Green Bay, guess what
good defense? Pittsburgh on paper? Good defense. That can't be
the conversation for the next four weeks. Would you rather
him just call out as players. I'd rather him say
just we have to be better. He did say that
and scheming, but I don't want the crutch anymore of
good defenses. Okay, I'm telling you what he said in
(01:34:42):
that clip was also, we have to take the attack
to defenses instead of letting them attack us. So he
did say what you're asking him to say. Okay, Well,
how I just gave the stats of how long they've
been bad? Running the back correct.
Speaker 3 (01:34:56):
I'm with you. That's the point I'm trying to make
is he can keep saying it, but until it actually happens.
And I don't know that he's ever going to be
the type of guy who's gonna throw his players under
the bus. But like to me, I look at it
and say, I don't see any players on this offensive
line good enough to feel like they can establish a scheme.
(01:35:18):
Like there's a handful of run plays from that game
that if you pause it right as Chase Brown is
getting the ball, you're thinking this is going to be
a seven yard game, And by the time the defense
makes contact with the offensive lineman or the offensive lineman
gets to where they're supposed to be to make their block,
it's destroyed because of the lack of physicality upfront. So
(01:35:42):
there's times where, like you see it on film and
when the ball is handed off, it looks like a
first down run at the bare minimum, but because those
dudes get knocked off their block so frequently that it
doesn't work. And so that's probably difficult for the offense
to say, for the play callers to say, Okay, well
(01:36:02):
we know that, like here's this run game here's this
power play, here's this trap, here's this counter. Everybody is
where they're supposed to be, except when it comes to
the actual blocking, they don't block. How do you how
do you work around that? Is my question?
Speaker 2 (01:36:19):
How do the Jacksonville Jaguars go from the worst rushing
team in football last year to the fifth best this year?
It's a great question. I don't know the answer to that.
I would argue coaching. Okay, scheme. They didn't revamp the
whole offensive line in Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (01:36:33):
So yesterday we talked about how bad the players are
up front, and now we're talking about how bad the
scheme is.
Speaker 2 (01:36:39):
The scheme's been The scheme's been tear I've complained about
the scheme for seven years.
Speaker 3 (01:36:43):
No, I understand specifically about the run game. Yes, so,
so which is it?
Speaker 2 (01:36:50):
They don't have the players, but other teams don't have
all of the personnel either, Okay, they find ways. Like
I think Buffalo is built to run the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:36:59):
They are.
Speaker 2 (01:36:59):
I think Baltimore, even though they've struggled at running it
right now, is built to run the ball. Philly is
built to run the ball. I don't think Jacksonville was
built that way. I think they have a genius offensive coordinator.
I think Detroit has built around the mentality of Dan Campbell.
The Colts are, all of a sudden, the third best
(01:37:21):
rushing team in football, and Daniel Jones is the quarterback.
I think there's a correlation there. I think there's a
correlation in Tampa. I think there are offensive line built
to run, and I think they're offensive lines that scheme
to run, and I think you see a mix of
those at the top of the National Football League. Now
here's the other interesting point, right, I think that's the problem.
(01:37:44):
They don't have personnel and they don't have the ability
to scheme, and all of a sudden, you're the worst
running team in football. And I'm not just saying by barely.
They run the ball for forty nine yards per game
on average. The next lowest is the Pittsburgh Steelers at
not sixty three. It's not like you're a couple yards off.
They are a ways off. Now, now the other go ahead,
(01:38:06):
Chase Brown. Last year, same scheme, mostly the same players,
average four yards per carry.
Speaker 3 (01:38:12):
So you're blaming Chase Brown. No, I'm saying, what is
the difference if the scheme and the players are mostly
the same. What's the difference? They have two new guards? Okay,
so is it the players of the scheme? I don't
know all right, well, because like Chase Brown was ten
yards shy of one thousand on the ground. Last year,
he averaged four point three yards per attempt. He had
(01:38:35):
a successful rushing rate of over fifty two percent, and
this year it's it's all gone south. But I have
a hard time believing that the scheme has changed that much.
He's minus fifty four yards before contact. I understand that
his rush successful rate right now is thirty four percent.
Speaker 2 (01:38:53):
Orlando Brown Junior, I think has taken another step back.
Kris has been awful, and they they swapped out bad
guards for potentially worst run blocking guards.
Speaker 3 (01:39:04):
Potentially Yeah, I don't know if you heard it. Yesterday
I issued an apology to Frank Pollack. Frank Pollack was
the offensive line go coach and run game coordinator. They
tried Jim Turner, they tried Frank Pollack. Frank Pollack people
wanted him fired last year. They're trying Scott Peters. I
was one I said Frank Pollack should be fired. Oh,
I mean they were getting four yards a carry for
(01:39:25):
Chase Brown last year.
Speaker 2 (01:39:27):
So the other thought about this was twelve personnel and
how much that can unlock the running game. This is
also what Zach Taylor had to say when he was
asked yesterday about t Higgins and andre Yochi Vash and
the amount of targets they're getting.
Speaker 18 (01:39:42):
In a game that you couldn't run effectively.
Speaker 27 (01:39:45):
If you had six targets for Jamar, you're two for
Tea and none for andre I.
Speaker 40 (01:39:50):
Like that, Well, we were in a lot of twelve personnel,
so twelve personnel and in theory regulates their defense a
little bit based on what we'd seen. So that Andrea
is subbing in for this the two guys, and that's
not how we're going to play the whole season. That's
sometimes just how you have to play an opponent. And
I think Andrea, over the course of a seventeen game
season is going to take shape for him. And he's
a guy that's patient, understands his role, appreciate the role
(01:40:14):
that he plays for us because of a lot of
his dirty stuff that he puts his nose in there
and gets it done, and his opportunities will come and
it'll take shape over the course of this season. And
there's nothing that he's done to minimize his role. That's
just the way that this game has played out for us, and.
Speaker 2 (01:40:27):
Yesterday's game, the way that will fold is why why
weren't there a lot of opportunities for Team Jamarrow.
Speaker 40 (01:40:33):
We didn't have a lot of opportunities to get first ounce.
I mean, we kept turning the ball over every time
across the fifty yard and we put the ball on
the ground, we threw the ball to them, so that
minimizes your opportunities. And then you get late in the
game and you know, we're trying different things to just
gain some momentum going forward at that point, and they challenge,
they do a good job. I mean, they'll make it
easy to get the ball to Jamar. I can promise
you that that's somebody they're trying to take away. And
(01:40:54):
same with Tea and again, we just we couldn't find
a great rhythm to be able to get those guys.
Speaker 14 (01:40:59):
To the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:41:01):
Okay, so here's my question. We were all on board,
at least I was on board with twelve personnel made sense.
Two tight ends, more running lanes for Chase Brown, the
ability to set up the play action pass putting more
pressure on the defense, forcing their hand to either go
big to match the personnel or to go small. And
if they go small, you can power them in the
(01:41:22):
running game. If they go big, you have matchups with
your tight ends that you like. The issue that I'm
seeing early on in the season. I assumed, maybe my fault,
that you would still be able to give the heavy
workload from a target standpoint to T. Higgins and Jamar
Chase while still operating predominantly out of twelve personnel, and
(01:41:43):
the Bengals tried. We watched film in here yesterday where
the Bengals max protected with eight eight players running back,
two tight ends, five linemen with routes with T Higgins
and Jamar Chase, and they still couldn't protect four with eight.
That's a pass protection problem. I get that. But if
(01:42:04):
right now the answer to why they're not getting targets
is you're operating more out of twelve personnel, then let's
call it what it is. Did they make the right
decision in giving T Higgins the contract if you're going
to pay that type of money, which I wanted them
to do because I thought Burrow, Higgins and Chase was
going to be unstoppable. If you're going to pay them
(01:42:25):
the money but you're not going to be able to
target them as much due to twelve personnel, then doesn't
that go against what you've built financially.
Speaker 3 (01:42:38):
I don't know that. First of all, I agree I
want t Higgins here. I have no problem with them
making that decision and choosing to spend the money there.
My biggest issue was that they didn't spend the rest
of their money on offensive lineman. Sure, and while Zach
said twelve personnel, yeah, we're trying to establish the run
(01:42:59):
bas he also brings up a good point that they
didn't have a lot of chances. They had a play,
They had three drives that were a total of six plays,
and the game was out of hand in those six plays,
essentially fumble return, touchdown, fumble, Minnesota scores, fumble, Minnesota field goal, halftime.
(01:43:24):
Game was over then. So there is something to Zach
saying that every time we crossed the fifty or we
couldn't really get anything going. Jamar Chase got a pass
and fumbled.
Speaker 2 (01:43:38):
They ran three more plays than they did against the
Cleveland Browns in Week one. They ran fifty two plays,
and in that game Higgins was only targeted the four
times and Chase was targeted the five and you knew
coming back that that wasn't going to be the case.
And then what did they do against Jacksonville? They made
sure that they were going to target their guys. They
came back Jamar Chase got six team targets, cut fourteen
(01:44:01):
of them. T Higgins was targeted eight times. But then
the very next game again the targets go down. I
don't think you can pay T Higgins the money you're
paying him and target him the amount of times you're
targeting him that that is not a good financial decision.
Is that specifically going to this Sunday?
Speaker 3 (01:44:22):
Is that a Zach Taylor problem or is that a
Jake Browning problem?
Speaker 4 (01:44:28):
Well?
Speaker 3 (01:44:28):
Is it different with Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (01:44:30):
I think Joe understands how important it is to target
guys at different points in the game, like, Hey, I
got to get my guy some targets. I think there
is that understanding from a quarterback, at least my understanding
the play. I think Joe changes a lot of the place. Okay,
I think Joe at the line of scrimmage changes a lot.
And I think Jake Browning in the role that he
(01:44:53):
is in is going to call the play that's that's
called in from the sideline.
Speaker 3 (01:44:57):
So you're saying it's more on Jake Brown.
Speaker 2 (01:45:00):
I would say it's more on Jake as a backup
coming in and hey, this is the play that's called.
This is what we're doing. Okay, Why why pay t
Higgins the amount of money that you're going to and
then target him four times in a game?
Speaker 3 (01:45:16):
I don't know why invest that money and then don't
protect your quarterback. That's why I That's why I'm saying,
then the investment was wrong. If you want to operate
out of twelve, which I'm fine with, but you can't
operate out of twelve and consistently get touches to your guys,
then you shouldn't have paid for both guys. I think
(01:45:37):
I disagree with that. Like I have no problem with
them having T Higgins, like every game is not going
to warrant that he's going to get fifteen targets, especially
if you if the bare minimum Jamar gets fifteen.
Speaker 2 (01:45:52):
At the bare minimum, how many should he get at
least ten? Okay, he's not received ten in any game.
Speaker 3 (01:45:57):
I understand that. I understand that my issue remains that
they did not get adequate players up front to help.
The twelve personnel doesn't work, nor does the spread work,
nor does four wide receivers or five wide receivers work
because they don't have good enough players up front. It's
(01:46:19):
like that. That is ultimately ultimately my issue. And t
Higgins has a base salary next year of ten million dollars,
so it's not like, you know, they're paying him forty
million dollars like they are. Jamar Chase the idea that
that means he or that they couldn't afford other ways
(01:46:40):
to the offense changes, I don't know if I agree
with that. Do you think he needs more targets? Absolutely?
I agree with that, that's my point. I agree with that. However,
I also have no idea what the game plan was
or why they continued to do what they did on Sunday.
(01:47:03):
I mean, they're I know, Minnesota was daring them to run,
so they did. It didn't work.
Speaker 2 (01:47:09):
But are they and that? But that's the hard point.
They're daring them to run, they can't.
Speaker 3 (01:47:15):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:47:15):
I don't know how you fix it then correct that
the issue, which then worries me on how you're going
to keep the locker room together, because receivers at any level,
high school, college, NFL, and I can at least speak
to this on experience. If you're not getting your receiver's
touches but you're winning, it's one thing.
Speaker 3 (01:47:36):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (01:47:36):
If your guys aren't getting touches and you're losing games,
good luck keeping things positive, good luck not losing.
Speaker 3 (01:47:44):
The locker room. Does the fact that they did sign
contract extensions mute that a little bit? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:47:52):
I don't I don't know, because deep down inside, these
guys are all super competitive and they just want to win,
and I don't think you can take that away. Let's finish,
Let's get to the last piece of audio here, because
I thought this was important because it's something I was
shocked at when the second half started. This is what
Zach Taylor had to say about coming out in the
(01:48:14):
second half of the game against Minnesota.
Speaker 40 (01:48:16):
Realistically, when that thing at halftime is thirty four to nothing,
we still held that hope coming out in the second half,
trying to put pressure on them to at least score
some points and hold them. And that didn't really happen
as the third quarter ensued, and so it's an opportunity.
Let's get some other guys in there and get them
a chance to go out there and plays football.
Speaker 2 (01:48:33):
We did have three at halftime, one't thirty four to nothing.
But my thought at half, when I was sitting there
watching the game, was I'm going to see what the
messages at halftime and what this team has made of
I want to see them come out swinging. I want
to see them come out fighting, regardless of if the
(01:48:53):
game is out of hand or not, regardless if it's
a foregone conclusion, if you lose or not. I want
to see this team fight their tailoff. They came out
in the third quarter, and I don't agree with what
Zach just said.
Speaker 3 (01:49:06):
I agree with you.
Speaker 2 (01:49:07):
I don't think they did that. They ran the ball,
which they couldn't do all day, for a negative run,
and then on second twelve they ran the ball again,
essentially conceding the drive, and then Browning took a sack
on third down, they punted the ball away, and they
proceeded to let Minnesota go seventy four yards and ten
plays and score again.
Speaker 3 (01:49:24):
Back to back runs after you couldn't do it all day,
And he said he was trying to put pressure on
the defense.
Speaker 2 (01:49:31):
Yeah, that is nonsense. I don't get it all. Come
out and say, hey, we wanted to get out of there.
Speaker 3 (01:49:36):
I will say this though, it was Chase Brown's longest
run of the day and before yard run on second
and twelve, So.
Speaker 2 (01:49:44):
My thing, it could have been one of two things.
You'd come out in the second half and you say
we can't afford to get anyone hurt and we're gonna
pull Jamar and t in some of the playmakers. Then
I get it. But if you still got your guys
out there, I want to go down swinging. I want
to say, you know what, screw this. I know the
the first half was embarrassing, but watch the fight we
show here in the second half.
Speaker 3 (01:50:03):
Yeah, that worried me.
Speaker 2 (01:50:05):
The first two drives of the half terrify me because
they went three and out after getting punched in the
mouth on offense and then on defense. They allowed Minnesota
to do whatever they wanted for ten plays and seventy
four yards in a touchdown. Can I play for you
the Dan Pitcher audio please? This was Dan Pitcher with
I think Charlie Goldsmith and Paul Danner Junior on The
(01:50:28):
Growler Podcast. Here's what he had to say about the
Bengals physicality on the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (01:50:34):
A lack of physicality that showed up, sure in the
run game. Can you fix that? There's different reasons for that, right.
Speaker 41 (01:50:40):
One could be that you don't have guys that gravitate
towards being physical. I don't believe that that's the case.
Other reasons why a lack of physicality could show up
is just being tentative, not quite sure of the look
that you're getting. You know, when when team brings pressure,
it's not just the player that's pressuring, but it's all
the other players that have to move so that they
(01:51:00):
can stay gap sound Well, that's a lot of movie pieces.
And sometimes the result of that is guys playing with hesitation.
But it doesn't necessarily mean it's because guys don't want
to go play with physicality. Why do we get our
guys to do that? How do we operate in the
world where they can feel like they can go play
with physicality?
Speaker 3 (01:51:17):
If that makes sense? So how do they do it?
Do you simplify things? That, to me is the best
example of it's a coaching problem. How are your guys
not prepared for the different looks that they are going
to receive correct Now. I understand Brian Flores, that's one thing.
(01:51:38):
He's notorious for that, But you've seen everything from Jim
Schwartz in Cleveland. It's not like Jacksonville debuted defense that
nobody's ever seen before like there is. That to me
is a complete lack of preparation, lack of coaching to
(01:51:59):
have the guys read to know so that they can
play without hesitation, and the lack of having an answer
for it. And one of the things I've said is
slow and soft yep, you play slow when you're trying
to think about what you're supposed to be.
Speaker 2 (01:52:10):
It's everything we thought about the defense moving to al
Golden simplify things, play faster, play more confidently, play more physical.
That to me sounded like a well, we're trying to
figure it out as we go here, and that can't
be the case. Drastically drastically late here for a break, Well,
we'll do a touch and go. When we get back,
we'll get ourselves back on the clock. Plenty more still
to go. It's the third hour of cinty three to sixty.

Burrow would not be happy with our time management right now.
Get to the break on time with burning timeouts. We're
burning touching ghosts like we're burning time out.
Speaker 3 (01:53:04):
This is unbelievable.

We'll be back well, Big baseball news, Huge baseball news.

Thank you for listening. ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
You know, Austin. Sometimes in the NFL, trades just don't work.
In March, the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles swapped CJ. Gardner,
Johnson and Kenyon Green. Yeah, along with draft picks. Three
(01:54:02):
weeks have gone by c J. Gardner Johnson was released
by the Texans today. Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Eagles
Yon Green was waived. I'm pretty sure the Eagles waived
him and then traded the pick back. It somehow got
all their picks back, and I bet I'll almost guarantee
you he's gonna sign with the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (01:54:21):
CJGJ. Probably so the Eagles will get out of this
just stealing. Yep, another steal for the Philadelphia Eagles. Speaking
of stealing, no more stealing, well, I should say stealing games.
No more umpire steeling umpires. Finally, Major League Baseball is
announced today it will use the Automated Ball Strike Challenge
system during the entire twenty twenty six sal Each team
(01:54:46):
gets two challenges and can keep them if they are successful.
Challenges can only be initiated by a pitcher, catcher, or batter,
and the request must come right after first pitch. The
player that issues the challenge has to tap the top
of their head or the tap of their hat or
helmet to let the umpire know. No help from the
dugout and other players on the field is allowed. In
(01:55:09):
each extra inning, a team will be awarded a challenge
if it has none remaining entering the inning, and of
course it's sponsored. Major League Baseball makes this announcement that
the ABS Challenge system, powered by T Mobile five G
network come uses cameras to set up around the perimeter
of the field to track the location of each pitch in.
(01:55:29):
A graphic on the scoreboard shows the result of the challenge.
I saw, what's that cat's name? Who does a ESPN?
Jeff Passing? Jeff Passon said that there are on average
one thousand missed calls per week? How is that possible
in Major League Baseball? Incredible? One thousand miss calls last night? Also,
(01:55:54):
he posted it the umpire auditor Roberto or Tez missed
twenty five five calls last night in the Brewers Padres game. Wow,
So I guess that's how you get to a thousand.
Roberto Ortiz himself no idea what he was looking at. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:56:12):
Good news, though there's a big college football weekend ahead.
Did you see the announcement made yesterday by Lane Kiffin's
daughter on social media?
Speaker 3 (01:56:23):
I did.
Speaker 2 (01:56:24):
She took to social media yesterday to announce her new relationship,
and it just so happens to be with stand out
LSU linebacker. His first name is will Will. I don't
know what his last name is, but he was all
over the field against Clemson. What do you make of
this strategy to wait until the week in which you
(01:56:48):
play your dad's team to announce that you, the daughter
of the old misshead coach, is dating the star linebacker
for the LSU Tigers. I think it's pretty funny, it is,
and pretty much matches Laane King. I think it's just
like because I think he's hilarious. If you've seen any
of his like videos with his daughter, they have a
great relationship. So to me, it's like a little bit
(01:57:10):
of of business by her, yeah, because she's profiting off
of social media.
Speaker 18 (01:57:15):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (01:57:15):
Also just you know, ribbing your dad a little bit, Yeah,
making fun of him. And also a funny thing for
the linebacker as well. I think it's wit weeks. Good
for him. He's got a brother, West Weeks also on
the team. Well, I think Burrow is going to be
out for twelve weeks. It's the third brother. It's twelve yeah. Also,
(01:57:38):
this was a middle names. Several we've talked.
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
About the severity, the the the enormous nature in which
this three game set against the Pirates is going to
be uh. Starting tonight, the Reds are selling tickets for
this home stand starting at eight dollars for all the games,
and they are extending the three two one deal for
the entire series. That's three dollars beers, two dollar hot dogs,
one dollar ice cream cups, all in an effort to
(01:58:03):
hashtag pack GABP.
Speaker 3 (01:58:06):
Smart move by the Red Legs to do this, get
as many people as you can down to the ballpark.
Obviously their last home stand, so I'm sure they have
plenty of stuff to get rid of. They might have
to reorder for the a NLDS. Oh yeah, but yeah,
I'm ready to go. Man, I'm excited to go tonight.
I have the Tuesday Pass And so how it works
(01:58:27):
if you don't know, is they'll send you a message
at nine am with a link, and you go to
the link and it says yes, I'm coming to the
game or no, I'm not coming to the game, and
then three hours before the game, they'll send you your ticket.
And so I go on to do it as I
do have had for every Tuesday. I tap on the
button and it sends me into a waiting room. It
(01:58:49):
says I'm the eighty seventh person in loh it has
never done that before. Okay, So I don't know if
it's just hey, they want to prevent, you know, the
system from crashing, or I don't know, but hopefully it
means more people are coming to the game to I
hope there is more people at the game. Yeah. And
so from what I've seen, the weather seems like it's
gonna be okay. Yeah, I think the weather's gonna move out.
(01:59:11):
Was originally supposed to rain. I think tomorrow is still
going to be some rain. But tonight I think is
gonna be okay. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:59:16):
I don't see as of right now anything else on
the radar until like three in the morning. Fantastic. It's
gonna be comfortable too. Yeah, Cloudy seventy four at first pitch, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:59:27):
Come on. Also held before we move on to quick
hits and everything. You've been in the studio that I'm
in a couple of times today I was searching for
full Bengals games from two thousand and four to watch
on YouTube Rudey because of Rudy Johnson, and I did
not know that the full two thousand and four Monday
(01:59:47):
Night football game between the Bengals and the Broncos. Ironically
enough from October of four is on YouTube. Wow. Rudy
one hundred and nineteen yards on the ground that day,
including a like a thirty yard touchdown run, Chad Johnson
seven for a buck forty nine and a fifty yard touchdown.
First This was two thousand and four. It was the
(02:00:08):
first time there was a Monday night game in Cincinnati
since nineteen eighty nine. Yeah, and uh, it was just awesome.
First Monday night game at Paul Brown Stadium. Al Michaels
and John Madden on the call. Carson's first year as
a starting quarterback. Just really cool. I've been watching the
whole thing. It's literally been three hours and twenty five
(02:00:29):
minutes on YouTube. Right now I'm watching. He's showing Bob
brad Kowski in the booth. You know who's standing behind
him as an assistant, Paul Gunther. Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:00:39):
They started with was they were one and four going
into that game? They were wont they were one and
four going into that game. Yeah, going up against the
number one defense in the NFL. How about that little
smoked twenty three to ten little foreshadowing mag dub all Right,
Moweger's standing by. He had Oakley Greens today, I think so,
yes he is. We'll talk to Mo when we return.

Speaker 3 (02:02:28):
How are you doing well?
Speaker 42 (02:02:30):
I'm doing well. Let's gorgeous out here. It's going to
be a great afternoon here at Oakley Greens, a great place.
I know you were here for the Bengals game on Sunday.
You know there's a lot going on. If you're thinking, man,
I want to watch the Reds game tonight, you could
watch it.
Speaker 3 (02:02:42):
Here at Oakley Greens.
Speaker 42 (02:02:44):
Or or perhaps maybe if you're thinking, god, i'd like
to help pack GABP.
Speaker 3 (02:02:50):
I might be able to help you with that. Oh
you gotta come to Oakley Greens.
Speaker 2 (02:02:53):
Oh wow, how about that. Outside of that, what do
you got coming up on the show.
Speaker 42 (02:02:59):
You guys were just talking about watching Rudy Johnson in
two thousand and four that there are certain like athlete
deaths that hit hard. That one hit me this morning. Yeah,
I love those teams in the mid two thousands. Yeah,
like those those that stretch of time four to five
maybe first part of six. Look, man, going to the
Super Bowl a couple of years ago was awesome. There
(02:03:22):
was nothing in this town like that stretch four and
o five.
Speaker 3 (02:03:26):
Nothing, nothing.
Speaker 42 (02:03:28):
And when you think of those teams, you think of
four guys and you think of their first names, Carson, Chad,
TJ and Rudy, and Rudy passing at the age of
forty five is just beyond tragic. So Paul Danner Junior
is gonna be here. We're gonna talk about Rudy a
little bit. My favorite all time Rudy Johnson game came
in two thousand and three when he carried it forty
three times against the Houston Texans. And then Paul and
(02:03:52):
I are going to talk about, you know, some of
the issues plaguing the Bengals. You know, you know Brian Callahan,
m I'm not gonna call the plays anymore. In Tennessee.
You're allowed to recuse yourself if you will of play
calling responsibilities. Well, obviously, get you set for Reds and Pirates.
The Great Terrence Mora is gonna join us. Terrence is
(02:04:12):
a guy who's been on our show before. He's written
a book about the Reds. We'll chat with him coming
up at four h five. Our guy Sean sayat Stats
and Scheme news letter at five twenty. And Tito Francona
is making a decision that I hope pays off. I
fear that it won't. We'll get to that this afternoon
as well. Plus Scott Saderfield talk today. Get you set
four U SE.
Speaker 2 (02:04:33):
And Kansas ABS system coming to Major League Baseball next year?
Speaker 3 (02:04:36):
Are you happy about that?
Speaker 42 (02:04:37):
One hundred percent? Look, I'm the anti replay guy. I'm
the guy who says, look, let's just let the human
beings make the calls. Players or games played by humans
should be officiated by humans. But we're not there. That's
not gonna happen. So if you're gonna add things to
the sport like added replay or like added challenges, it
cannot be intrusive. I saw this implemented during spring training.
(02:05:00):
I went to back in March. It's as unintrusive as anything.
Speaker 4 (02:05:04):
It's quick.
Speaker 42 (02:05:04):
It's the same as tennis. Yeah, if you've ever watched
or been to the Cincinnati Open, or you watch the
US Open or a Major or whatever, you see how
they use this. It is very quick. It is very good.
I am a huge proponent of this.
Speaker 2 (02:05:19):
Did you catch yourself at all last night watching Monday
night football and wondering what sport is this that I'm watching?
Speaker 42 (02:05:25):
It's funny. The three of us were on a text
thread and Tony, you and I have the same contribution
to the text. This looks like a different sport in
terms of intensity, in terms of scheme, in terms of execution. Like,
that was a great sporting event last that was a
great football game the team that I wanted to win one.
(02:05:46):
We thought that game was going to be fun and
it lived up to the hype. But I saw with
both teams, specifically Detroit, especially close to the goal line,
creativity in the run game.
Speaker 3 (02:05:56):
Yeah, huh.
Speaker 2 (02:05:58):
Does any team take on they're head coach more, you
think than the Troit Lions.
Speaker 14 (02:06:03):
No?
Speaker 42 (02:06:04):
And I made fun of him, dude, like when he
got the job and they were on hard knocks and
he's talking about biting mees. I'm like, yeah, okay, wwf
figure coaching football like this guy is what a football
coach is like in the movies, and football coaches and
movies aren't like football coaches in real life. Could not
(02:06:24):
have been more wrong. You're exactly right. And what I
love about him is it doesn't feel to me like
he's playing a character. No, right, right, Like I think
Mike Tomlin's playing a character sometimes. Mike Tomlin's a terrific coach.
He's gonna be in the Hall of Fame. You know,
he's never had a losing season. But like, I don't
get the Dan Campbell's playing a character. I think Bill
(02:06:45):
Belichick sometimes is playing a character. They don't love the
character right now in Chapel Hill. But I Dan Campbell,
I just you get the sense that is him. You
get the sense the players will do anything for him
and really excited to have that team come here on
the heels of scoring ninety points over the last two
games combined.
Speaker 3 (02:07:03):
Do you think Jim Harball plays a character sometimes?
Speaker 42 (02:07:05):
I do one hundred percent because I remember him as
a player and he wasn't weird right now? You know,
people get older, they get weirder. I could be accused
of that, but yeah, I do. I think like when
Jim Harball was a player, he was on safe by
the bell, like he was captain comeback. He was kind
of a likable guy, and then like now as a coach,
(02:07:27):
he's I think he's totally.
Speaker 3 (02:07:28):
Playing a character. Do you think Mike Gundy was a character?
Speaker 4 (02:07:31):
What's that?
Speaker 3 (02:07:32):
You think Mike Gundy was a character?
Speaker 5 (02:07:35):
I do?
Speaker 42 (02:07:35):
I'm not sure I do. How many people tweeted what
I tweeted when he got like a.
Speaker 3 (02:07:45):
I'm fired, I'm a man, I'm fired.
Speaker 42 (02:07:48):
Yeah, that felt like, yeah, it has been amicable now
for a while.
Speaker 3 (02:07:52):
Right yeah. Lastly, out let me ask you this are
conversation stayed a good job? I don't know, not right now.
I don't think Salboom pickts money. Now, that's also true.
Speaker 2 (02:08:03):
You and I had a conversation yesterday about what Dan
Graziano had to say about Kirk Cousins and the Bengals
need to add him. The Giants move on from Russell
Wilson today. They're going with Jackson Dart. They have Russell
Wilson as the backup listed right now. I saw Joe
Goodbarry post earlier today. If you could find a way
to make a deal and get Russell Wilson, it would
cost you two million dollars from a salary standpoint. Is
(02:08:24):
that something you'd be willing to do if you're the Bengals.
Speaker 42 (02:08:26):
I'm gonna try to talk like Russell Wilson. Okay, I
wouldn't make that trade for Russell Wilson. That's the cadence
that he talks with. Whatever he says, anything like when
he goes to dinner, Yeah, I'll have a hamburger with
pickles on the side.
Speaker 3 (02:08:44):
I'm gonna throw the ball to t Higgins.
Speaker 42 (02:08:46):
Yeah, I would absolutely love to come to Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (02:08:50):
He was born here. People forget that's right. Yeah, that's
how he talks. Yeah.
Speaker 42 (02:08:56):
Yeah, Like to me, the question isn't is he better
than Jake Brown? Is he better than Brett Rippin?
Speaker 3 (02:09:03):
I think so? So then why not let's do it?
Speaker 42 (02:09:06):
Then you had it that, why not go and make
a trade for Russell?
Speaker 3 (02:09:11):
Can you do so of your show like that? Today?
Speaker 42 (02:09:13):
I will try to do my show just like that
from Oh asked Paul that question?
Speaker 3 (02:09:19):
In that cadence.
Speaker 42 (02:09:21):
From the athletic is gonna be here in a few minutes.
My favorite thing that Russell Wilson does is when he
was good with the Seahawks, he would do like the
postgame interview on the field with the football like under
his arms, like he would carry a stack of books
in high school, but you know he was he would
take on the pose of like, you know, the high
school football hero with the ball under his arm. And
(02:09:44):
then he would do the interview with Melissa's Star and
he's like, Melissa, we just improved US seven and two,
and next week we're gonna play the San Francisco forty nine.
Speaker 3 (02:09:56):
I love it. Thanks Mo, Thanks Mo. I have a
great show.
Speaker 42 (02:09:59):
Guys, it was great to be on with you on
Sincy three six.
Speaker 2 (02:10:03):
Mo will uh he'll be in attendance tonight, Austin, You're
gonna be an attendant.
Speaker 3 (02:10:07):
We'll be there.
Speaker 2 (02:10:07):
Our guy Mike said get there tonight. If he could
be there, he would, So you're coming in ton I
can't be there tonight. Oh it's the kids man Shocker
Picture Day Picture Week.
Speaker 3 (02:10:17):

Speaker 18 (02:10:17):

Speaker 2 (02:10:18):
