Speaker 1 (00:00):
Skyline Chile Cincy three sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsored
in part by Skyline Chile. Stop by Skyline Chili through
a three way or cheese coney today, feeling good? It's
Skyline time. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yes, indeed, it is hi, Hello, and welcome in to
Cincy three sixty on ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is
Austin Elmore. Thank you for being here today. Thank you
for starting your afternoon with us. Maybe it's your lunch break.
Maybe you're, you know, elbow deep in a Skyline Chili
four way right now. Maybe you're wiping off a little
(00:40):
bit of chili from your chin after digging into a
cheese coney. Maybe you got a little bit of sour
cream on your shirt and you're hoping nobody notices for
your one thirty meeting. I don't know, but I'm glad
you're here with us, right here, right now. I'm gonna
start off by asking you to bear with me a
(01:01):
little bit. Yesterday was a tough day for the voice.
I feel better today, but when you talk endlessly for
a living, your voice is going to struggle. I've done
all the necessary precautions. I've got the lozenges, I've got
the tea, I've taken emergency. I don't feel one hundred
percent at all, and I think in and of himself,
(01:21):
I'm just kind of going through a bit of a
midlife crisis, which is exciting. But now is not the
time to talk about that. Let's talk about the issues
surrounding us in sports today and be a distraction from
the day to day monotonous Wednesday hump Day in the
middle of July. Now we got to experience fully the
doldrums of July. Yesterday when we saw that Shamar Stewart
(01:46):
might be participating in Texas A and M team workouts
returning to College station, and those reports have been refuted,
and they've been a piece of I don't know, people
have been argue thank you about those and having opinions
and sharing those. I want to talk to John Sheeran
from A to Z Sports about that, and he wrote
(02:08):
about it a little bit yesterday. And plus John is
my one of my favorite guests to have on to
talk about the Bengals. I'm gonna ask him about his
under the radar storylines going into training camp coming up
this year and so much more. That's gonna be at
two o'clock. I'll also go ask John about the Ring
of Honor inductions. It was announced earlier this morning that
(02:29):
Dave Lapham and leapin' lamar Parish are the two newest
inductees to the Bengals Ring of Honor. Congratulations are in
order to them and you will hear from both of them.
Both Dave Lapham and leapin' lamar Parish met with the media,
had a zoom call earlier this morning. We're going to
bring a portion of that to you and looking forward
to having that conversation plus a little bit later on
(02:53):
the ESPN lists, you know, it's list season. ESPN list
came out for quarterbacks earlier this week. I've been pushing
it off and it came out with wide receivers today
and you might like where Jamar Chase ended up on
the list of the top wide receivers in the National
Football League. We'll get into that a little bit later
(03:13):
on as well. We've got a Postman Law injury report
to get to your talkbacks, and of course we'll talk
about last night's Major League Baseball All Star Game. That's
all Andrew Abbott pitch a scoreless inning on just thirteen
pitches and saw Ellie de la Cruz with a couple
of plate appearances. He flew out to left field and
struck out, and the National League ends up winning on
(03:36):
a home run swing off a home run swing off.
More on that in just a little bit, but first,
let me tell you that phone lines are open. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. That is the phone number, and you are
welcome to call into the show all day long, and
maybe I'll let you go a little bit longer than
(03:57):
normal since the voice isn't there. And part of the
reason the voice is struggling is part of the reason
why I've got an assistant today, I've actually got a producer.
I've got someone here to put me on their back,
to carry me, and that is Drew Wester Heidi in
the producer's chair today. Drew, Hi, how are you.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
I'm well, Austin. How are you doing today? It seems
not well. I don't feel great. Well, that's what we do.
We pick each other up. Yeah, we're a team.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
But like I feel a thousand times better than I
did yesterday. That's good, but I don't feel great. If
you will, but I do appreciate you offering to come
in and help produce this show for me today. And
I was told that you will have an extensive preview
of the Open Championship coming up this weekend.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yes, I will, I have incumbry. I'm looking at it
right now. We can get into that. It's your show, right,
is here to help drive it towards whatever direction you
want to go. But whenever we want to go to it,
I am prepared.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Nobody watches more golf than Drew Wester Heidi, and he
has prepared for US an Open Championship preview as the
Open gets underway tomorrow. What course are they playing at?
I've been so out of the loop. What course are
they at?
Speaker 3 (05:12):
They're playing at Royal Port Rush and Port Rush, Northern Ireland.
So they're heading to the homeland of one Rory McElroy.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
All right, I'm a Rory guy. I will be rooting
for Rory. We'll do more on that in just a
little bit. And again, Drew, thank you for being here.
Let's start though with the All Star Game last night.
It was fun. I enjoyed it. It's like the best
All Star game. It's better than the Pro Bowl. I
don't even couldn't tell you last time I watched an
NHL All Star Game. The NBA All Star Game is
(05:42):
really not competitive until the final few minutes, and they
also have players wearing crazy, weird, stupid jerseys. Baseball understood, Hey,
we've got to put our players back in their jerseys
because our fans love that, and you play like normal baseball.
It's maybe there's a few more heaters up in the
(06:03):
zone than you would typically see in a regular season game,
but you still have typical Major League baseball being played,
and guys get to compete, and honestly, for pitchers, for
some of them, with the break they're going through in
the All Star break, it is a chance for them
to kind of stay sharp and test how they are
(06:24):
against some of the best hitters in baseball. And so
last night Derek scooball CAPA gave up a couple of
runs to the National League Early on, Paul Skens looks
sharp in his inning of work starting on the mound
for the National League. Andrew Abbott looked really sharp in
his debut in the All Star Game, and it was
(06:46):
cool to have catchers and pitchers miked up and kind
of going through the process of I might go heater here,
I might go change up here, I might do this,
I might do that. It was just really cool to
see that. And I know I'm not, you know, going
out on a limb here and saying I wish they
would do that more often when it comes to micing
up players, But I wish they would do that more often.
(07:09):
I know they do it every Sunday night. I kind
of wish they would do it more frequently with teammates.
But it is funny because I don't think at the
All Star Game or I don't think in a regular
season game, you would get as much content as you
would at the All Star Game. Because you even started
to see last night the competitive juice is taking over
a little bit for school Ball and cal Roley, who
(07:31):
were both miked up at the same time, and you know,
they didn't say as much. They were just kind of
communicating with one another and they got focused into it.
I don't know that you're gonna get a lot, nor
would players want to do it in a regular season game,
but I do wish we had more access to that
as far as baseball is concerned. So the National League
(07:52):
went out to a got out to a six to
nothing lead pretty early on, and before you know it,
that lead will evaporated and they had to go to
a home run swing off. Yes, a home run swing off.
That's a new rule instituted for this year. So they
(08:13):
don't play extra innings because everybody's played and all the
different pitchers have been used and so on and so forth.
There's just a home run swing off. Each team chooses
three batters. Those three batters get three swings each, and
whoever has the most home runs at the end of it,
that's ballgame. And so last night in the home run
(08:34):
swing off, Kyle Schwarber was the second batter for the
National League and he went three for three, homer homer,
homer to give the National League to win. It was awesome,
It was it was really really cool. I enjoyed it immensely.
And it's actually the topic of today's Revivefitnessystems dot Com
(08:55):
poll question, brought to you by Revivefitnessystems dot Com and
coach PJ. Street. What did you think of the home
runs swing off at the All Star Game last night?
Your options are loved it so fun, I fell asleep. Cool,
but no judge in Otani or I'm indifferent right now,
(09:16):
forty two percent say I fell asleep. Now this is
fair because I, after Eli's at bat, I think in
the eighth was like, all right, I'm going to bed.
I don't need to see the rest of this. Let's
get out of here. And then by the time I
got from my living room and I, you know, brush
my teeth and everything, and then I crawl into bed,
I look at my phone and I see we're going
(09:38):
to a swing off. So of course I get right
back out of bed, come back to the living room,
gotta watch the swing off. And it was really cool.
It was funny, it was entertaining. It took way too long,
but it was entertaining. And apparently one of the first
things the managers do with the All Star Game is announced,
like or decide who we're going to to be their
(10:00):
three batters in the event of a swing off. That's
something they did. And I was confused at the moment
because nobody was mentioning show hey Otani and or Aaron Judge.
I was a little bit confused because, like, those are
the two biggest stars in all of baseball right now,
and they both hit monster tank shots and this would
(10:21):
be a chance for them to like kind of get
no home run derby environment right, Like that would be awesome.
And then I realized that nobody's talking about them, they're
not showing them on the screen. And then it's like,
oh crap, they're not here. They left. How is that possible? Now?
I get it. It's the All Star break. You were
(10:43):
taken out of the game after the first or second inning.
You probably want to go fly home to wherever home
is and get off your feet and see your family
and enjoy it. And it's a whole bunch. I mean
for Judge and Otani especially, there's a bunch of media
and a bunch of crap that they have to do
over the course of the All Star I get it. Hell,
we even talked about with Todd Frazier when the All
Star Game was here and how he was like the
(11:03):
ambassador and had to do all these different things. I
think that's what Chris Sale was this year. But he's
on the injured list so he doesn't have to worry
about actually performing either way, I'm thinking, gosh, this could
be awesome. But Kyle Stours from the Marlins is one
of the guys swinging and a guy by the name
of Aranda, which I don't even know his first name,
Jonathan Aranda, maybe from the Tampa Bay Rays. He's swinging.
(11:27):
I know Schwarbur because who doesn't know Schwarber. He's one
of the best home run hitters in baseball and write
this down you ready, he's from Middletown. Anyways, I knew
that you know about him and recognized, you know, obviously
Brent Rooker from the A's who was in the All
Star Game or in the home run Derby last night.
But I'm like, gosh, this could be cool if the
(11:48):
biggest stars. I really wanted Ellie to do it, and
I was hoping that he would be involved in it
because it's just three swings, but he wasn't, and instead
Kyle Schwarber goes three for three Aranda in the next
round for the American League couldn't match that, and by
that point it was pointless for the Polar Bear Pete Alonzo,
(12:08):
who went deep in the regular part of the game
and was probably going to be the MVP until the
National League blew the lead. So that's probably why he
was still sticking around, or else he probably would have
scooted out of there as well, but Kyle Schwarber goes
three for three and eventually gives the lead I guess
to the National League and they win it in the tiebreaker.
(12:30):
Here is Kyle Schwarber after winning the home run swing
off for the National League.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
It's funny they ask you the first day that you
get here, Hey, you know, if we end up in
a tie, okay with doing it like Doc wants you
to do it. I'm like, yeah, no problem, and yeah,
you don't really think there's a chance of the game
going to be ended up in a tie, and then
sure enough, you know it does.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
But it was a fun little you know, it was fun.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
There a little excitement there at the end, and you
know it came down to the wire and I know
Pete was waiting there on back to the sale home too,
So just a lot of fun in general.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
That is Kyle Schwarber checking in after the All Star
Game victory in the home run swing off. I liked it.
I want to know what you thought of the whole
run swing off and also Kyle Schwarber, he might just
be my favorite non red. Do you have a favorite
non red? My favorite red is Hunter Green, which, by
(13:27):
the way, We've got an update on him coming up
a little bit later on in the Postman Law Injury Report.
But Kyle Schwarber, just the way that he carries himself,
all the stories about him being a great teammate, the
fact that he's local, he's an Ohio guy. Is just
a big, kind of funny looking burley left hander, and
he just hits tanks. I think he's my favorite non
(13:48):
red And unfortunately, even when he was with the Cubs,
I found myself really liking Kyle Schwarber, which it's hard
to like anybody who has anything to do with the Cubs.
How do you feel about Pete crow Armstrong? By the way,
my roommate absolutely despises Pete crow Armstrong. He absolutely Hey, hey,
you can't stand him. And I'm like, what's the difference
(14:09):
between PCA and Ellie de la Cruz. They're essentially the
same person. They're flashy, they've got a little bit of
out their style. They're really fast, they're fun to watch,
they hit the ball well, they steal bases, they're kind
of quirky, kind of do their own. What's the difference
between Pete crow Armstrong and Ellie de la Cruz. Now
(14:29):
I find myself indifferent towards pca uh And obviously I
really really like Ellie de la Cruz. But what's the
difference between those two? And do you have a favorite
non red five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty.
You can tweet at me at audiell Moore A U
T y E L M o r E. Speaking of tweeting,
I just saw a tweet here from our good friend
(14:51):
Tony Pike. Tony has posted a photo of him settling
in going belly up to the bar at the Dakery
Deck down there in Sarasota, and with him a Sincy
three to sixty T shirt from sinceyshirts dot com. Now,
Tony told me that he was going to do everything
(15:14):
in his power for even just for a brief moment,
to get them to crank up the volume on Sincy
three sixty at the Dakery Deck. And so I have
no way of knowing if that's happening right now or not.
But if you're at the Dakery Deck right now at
twelve fifteen pm Eastern, and you're belly up down there
(15:35):
in the Sunshine State having a daker on the deck
with Anthony Pike, well then good for you. And I'll
tell you what, I might need a few of the
ingredients of that dakery deck to help with this throat
issue I got going on. But good to see Tony
is doing what he said he would do. He's a
man of his words. He's belly up at the deck
(15:56):
and he is getting settled in for some beverages and
hope fully he'll stay there all three hours listening to
Cincy three to sixty just like you. Phone lines are
open at five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty
vote on the Revivefitnessystems dot com poll question, as well
at Audiol Moore at ESPN fifteen thirty and today at
Drew b w as well Drew my producer. When we
(16:19):
come back your phone calls more on the All Star
Game and eventually the Bengals Ring of Honor. You'll hear
from Dave Lapham and Lamar Parrish and more. This is
Sincy three to sixty hour one, brought to you by
Skyline Chilly on the Home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
Now your chance to he swings and that will not
leave the yard even as he walked us in. It
comes up way short. Kyle Schwarbern three homers on three
swings in the Homeland derby to decide the All Star
Game gives the National League the win.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
That was Carl Ravich right here on ESPN fifteen thirty
last night for the call of the Major League Baseball
All Star Game as the National League beats the American
League in a home run swing off, thanks to no
small part to Kyle Schwarber. I wondered, do you have
a favorite non red? Mine is officially Kyle Schwarber. I
(17:22):
think it's kind of always been that, but now it's
like official official. I just love that guy. You can
tweet at me, let me know, call in as well.
Five on three seven four nine, fifteen thirty, Kevin says
his favorite non red is Vladimir Vladimir Guerrero junior. And
Kevin says he was a big fan of his dad,
So that makes sense, all right, I hear you. So
(17:42):
that's one of them. Drew, what did you think of
the swing off last night? It was very entertaining. It's
a terrible way to determine a winner. I linking it
to penalty kicks in soccer or a shootout in hockey.
But this game doesn't mean anything correct, and that's why
it's totally fine, Okay for the All Star Game. I
(18:03):
got no issue with them using it in the All
Star Game, but I saw a lot of people throwing out, well,
we should do this for regular season games, And I
get it. It's very, very exciting, and it was exciting
last night, and it would be exciting if they did
determine regular season games by it. Just when you strip
it all down to the fundamental aspect of it, it's
a terrible way to determine a winner. Okay, Interesting, Now,
(18:25):
why do you think like penalty kicks? What do you because,
how should like, let's say a soccer match that there
has to be a winner. How should it be determined?
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Well, if it were up to me, if I was
the you know, the commissioner of all sports, yes, for soccer,
it would just be golden goal, like whoever's.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
The first so they just play forever first team to score. Well, no,
not necessarily.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
This is the thing. I don't dislike penalty kicks. I
don't dislike shootouts. I didn't dislike the home run swing off.
I don't dislike them, Okay, I just just the way
that they how those things that you play this full
game of with this set of rules. It's how I
feel about college football overtime. Yes, college football overtime sucks.
You play a game, you play this game with this
(19:05):
set of rules for however long you know, period of
time or innings or whatever, and then you just ultimately decide, Okay,
now we're just gonna do this. You're going to shoot
from an arbitrary distance away to determine who wins this
full contest. It's it's something I kind of battle with it,
because at the end of the day, I do enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
They are very entertaining to watch. There has to be
a winner and a loser at some point.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Correct, you can't play forever, right, and I just and again,
if it were up to me, like soccer would be
golden goal and all that. But I don't hate the
fact that those sports end that way.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
What did you think of the fact that Shoho Tani
and Aaron Judge were not there?
Speaker 3 (19:46):
Kind of like what kind of felt how you felt
they probably were lifted pretty early on in the game.
Probably saw it as you know, probably had the permission
of you know, I'm I did my duties here all week,
you know, for the past couple of days. I'm gonna
go home and enjoy our enjoy my break. And I
think it's it is kind of funny because they're the
you know, the two headliners. I would love to get
(20:08):
a full list of who all wasn't there right at
the end.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Because like at the end they showed Trek Scuball, who
was in street clothes. Yep, you know he had pitched
two hours ago, but he came up to you know,
he the MVP wasn't in play for him. You know,
he gave up two runs. He came up and watching.
Maybe he was maybe all of his teammates are flying
back together so he had to wait for them. I
don't know. But like if if Judge hits a three
run homer in the first inning, he's gonna win the MVP,
(20:34):
or at least be in consideration for that. Or if
you care about winning the All Star Game MVP, which
Kylee Horber did, you would kind of want to be
in the home run swing off, would you?
Speaker 6 (20:45):
Not?
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Right? And that was my thing.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
You would think that those guys will and you know,
whether it being six to nothing, they may have thought, Okay,
well this thing's done dusted. But the MLB tweeted out
a picture of all the National League All Stars after
that final out.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
And you know it's who. It's Alonzo Schwarber, Ellie Abbots
in the picture stours, you know, and they just look
elated to win a game that ended with a gimmick
ending in a game that did not matter. And they
they all look so happy. And you know, for the
most part, a lot of first timers. But you see
a lot of the guys who were in the game,
(21:21):
even though even the ones who had been lifted early.
All right, joey Otani the one notable exception.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Yeah, well he plays on a different set of rules
in a lot of different ways. Robbie chimes in. He says,
I put in different because it was an All Star game.
I sure hope they don't think about doing that stupid
crap in a real game. That's what Robbie has say.
I'm sure a lot of people. I don't know if
I would how I would feel about that in a
real game. I did see it's perfect for the All
(21:48):
Star Game. It's perfect for the All Star Game. I
agree one hundred percent, which much like the elam ending
in the NBA, I think is great for the That's
a good comparison. Yeah, Charlie Goldsmith did put this out
there though one of his ideas. Maybe this is Charlie
just you know, workshopping a take at the take table
like he's known to do. Make this home run derby
ending allowed in the regular season when each of the
(22:10):
following two things have happened in the game. A, it's
after the tenth inning, and B both teams have already
used at least seventy five percent of their bullpen in
the game. I think I disagree with him, but I
can at least see, Okay, maybe there's a path there
with a certain set of rules, or if it goes
past the twelfth inning or something.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Along, I think the inning would have to be later.
And wouldn't it have to be a pitch machine?
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Yes? Right, Like it would be like a pitching machine
instead of the guys from each team, right right?
Speaker 3 (22:42):
Well, and that would be interesting because then it becomes
like does the guy who just pitches BP during the day,
like yeah, go out there on the mound.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Or does Major League Baseball have a designated guy at
every game to throw BP? And if so, how do
I apply for that job? Right? That would be fun
now that I think could be. But you know, talk
about gambling and all this. Yeah, never know. Pablo Toy
will probably have a story about that.
Speaker 7 (23:06):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Do you have a favorite non Red Drew active? I
would say Bobby Witt Junior. Oh. I just like watching
I just like watching him play. He just he's so smooth.
He kind of like him and Ellie have a lot
of similarities, but they're also kind of different in how
they play the game. Sure, he's American League, so you know,
(23:26):
I don't get to watch him all that much. I
did get the MLB package this year, so I've watched
a little bit more of other baseball, and I just,
I don't know, there's something about him. I just like
watching him play. He's really really good. Yeah, yeah, he's
He's everything you would want in a franchise player, and
not just for what he does on the field. In
(23:46):
terms of the off field stuff. It seems like he's
a tremendous guy, great teammate, all those things.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
Uh. So, how do you feel though about Goates?
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Uh? It takes a special individual to pull him off.
Do I think I think Bobby Witt pulls it off?
Not particularly, No, I think the younger you are, you
shouldn't have a go tea. Yes, I think it's more
of a distinguished older person look right. And if you
are like in your twenties, like Bobby Witt, and you
(24:17):
have a go tee, you immediately look.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
Like you're in your thirties.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Yes, well maybe I don't know if maybe that's part
of the I don't know if that's the hard game.
Well maybe you know, got picture looking on the field
or came off the field on the field truss me.
But a guy looking in and he goes, I know
this is Bobby Wit junior, but he's got to go tea.
He can't be that good and he hits one four
and fifty four feet over the fence.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
I don't want to offend anybody because I know there
are sure, I'm sure there are plenty of people listening
right now that have goatee's. And I think I've said
this on including one of our bosses that has a
go to I've know I've said this in the past.
I'm not a big go tea guy, and I think
it's because I can't pull it off right. But I
do think it may instantly makes someone look at least
ten years older, correct, and a crazy I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
But a lot of people can pull off the goateee, right,
there are people that look great like there are great
go tea people out there, sure, for sure. Yeah, very few.
Takes a lot to pull it off, but if you can,
it's a weapon.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Okay, all right, good to know, all right, go tea
coverage continuing, Yes here on. It really is the summer
of It really is the middle of the summer. Oh
my gosh, I love it. It's list season. We'll talk
about the list coming up at hour number three. When
we come back, though, we'll talk a little bit about
the Bengals Ring of Honor inductions. Dave Lapham and leap
(25:35):
and Lamar Parish are going to be going in in October.
We'll talk more about that. Phone lines open as well
at five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. If
you want to call in and be a part of
the show, leave a talkback. We'll do those at one
twenty as well. This is siny three sixty brought to
you by Skyline Chili Home with the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty. Fine,
what's going on in the NFL? Getting ESPN fifteen thirty
(25:58):
from iHeartRadio, Welcome back since E three to sixty, ESPN
fifteen to thirty, Cincinnati's sports station. Did you know the
sps are tonight? Do people still watch the SP's? I
(26:20):
was looking through the nominees for the SP's this evening,
and I'm thinking, all right, it'll be probably, you know,
Jamar Chase will probably be nominated for something, and you know,
maybe there'll be a couple of Bengals just because of,
you know, the incredible season that Burrow and Chase had. Nope,
not a single Bengal, not a single Bengal nominee. I
don't know if that's abnormal. I mean, best athlete in
(26:43):
men's sports, Alan Barkley, Shay Gilgess, Alexander Shoheyo Tani okay,
I get it, MVPs, but Barkley over over that, and
then there was like the best NFL player. It was Barkley,
Alan Jackson and Pat Sertant. You couldn't throw a Burrow
(27:06):
or chase them. Not that anybody cares about this, but
you know, I was a little surprised by that. At
least phone lines open five, one, three, seven, nine, fifteen thirty.
Let's go to Mike in California. Mike, what's up, dude?
Speaker 8 (27:19):
I thought last night was well, thanks for letting you know.
I thought last night was three and a half hours
of really good entertainment. MLB impressed me. They did a
great job of mixing it up and kind of surprising
people with your ball strike saying and just everything. Let
Nick letting guys wear the uniforms that the home run
(27:43):
swing off at the end. I thought it was great.
These guys all volunteer to do that. They don't none
of them have to do any of this right, and
so why would you want to play a fifteen any game? Plus,
what the league is trying to do is trying to
make the game more palatable to you younger people by
shortening it up, not letting a drag on it, like
(28:04):
you said. You know, but I was tired too by
the eighth Indian It's like, all right, okay, I'm enjoying it,
but I'm tired.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Yeah, and you.
Speaker 8 (28:14):
Got to get up or you don't feel good or whatever.
And as far as Otanian does not being what was
the what weren't the odds? I would I'll have to
ask Mo if there were any odds on the thing
going into overtime. Yeah, because and the reason, And I
think it's cool they picked guys. Borber is not a
(28:35):
household name across the country, like a lot of those
guys weren't sure, and it helps expose some of the
young guys.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Yeah, in that sense. In that sense, it does make
sense of like, oh, yeah, here's some people maybe we
haven't heard of or don't know as much about, and
they could be the player to win it for the
American League of the National League. Yeah. I do think
that's a good point. And you brought up the automated
ball strike system, the challenge system, which I kind of
had forgotten about, but I think they were used it
(29:04):
three or four times and the players were right each time.
It was quick, it was not intrusive. It was like
I think a lot the first exposure to a lot
of people of like what that looks like. And that
went really smoothly as well. I thought Baseball did a
good job with that.
Speaker 8 (29:18):
It didn't and they flashed on Roberts like I want
of the calls it went against the nationally. He was
just laughing. Yeah, yeah, okay, cool. You know, nobody got
tested off. It wasn't like a big deal. Now it
would have been a big deal goes in the playoffs
or something. Obviously. The other thing I I, I uh
liked it, I liked to attribute to Hank Aaron. You know,
(29:41):
I grew up with Hank Aaron. You guys didn't, So
it was a big deal to us older people. So
that's that's all I had to say. I just thought
they did a nice job, certainly well the NFL and
the NBA. In the NHL, I don't know, they might
as well just stop that completely, give the crap and
this this this baseball thing might go away eventually.
Speaker 9 (30:04):
I hope not.
Speaker 8 (30:05):
But we talked about it yesterday and uh, maybe trying
to make it a fourth in July time. I don't
know if that'll ever get any wings. I'm sure it won't.
Lesson involved making more money. But I'm really looking forward
to you talking about the Bengals because I'm really I
don't know, Austin, I'm so concerned about here. Here's what
(30:26):
I heard this morning, real quick, if you'll allow me,
on the ESPN. They said there's such an influx of
really good wide outs coming into the league every year
based on the fact that college football in a lot
of cases now is going four and five wide outs,
so there's more there's more wide receivers coming. There's a
(30:46):
bigger influx coming into the NFL, which which really makes
the cornerbacks that much more valuable. Do you think the
cornerback is more valuable than the wide receiver?
Speaker 2 (31:02):
No, but I think the depth of that position is
more valuable than the depth of your wide receivers because
there's running backs you can get the ball to, tight ends,
you can get the ball to. Quarterbacks are more athletic
than they've ever been. But like why the cornerback. Corners
have to be able to cover a variety of different
(31:23):
types of receivers, all those I just named plus some
of the top wide receivers in the game. And that's
a position that's really difficult to play in a position
that always results in a lot of injuries. And every
year we talk about oh, so and so got picked
up off the waiver wire or whatever it might be,
and they're running out of guys that can play cornerback,
(31:44):
and then that's the guy that gets picked on for
an entire game. So the depth of the cornerback room
to me, is more important than anything else.
Speaker 8 (31:53):
And one more. You're being really kind to me here.
I heard a really interesting set about Caleb Williams. I
still don't know what to think about Caleb Wings. But
they said that last year Austin, he was a negative
He had four hundred and eighty something yard rushing, but
he had a greater amount in rocks for loss, you know,
(32:16):
or you know what I mean, Yeah, and he was
a negative number from his rushing yardage which was almost
five hundred two his getting into his sack yarde which
equates to what he's not playing the system or explain,
explain to me what the basic reason for that would be.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
The basic reason would be that he holds onto the
ball way too long and he tries to do too much.
And there was a lot of times where Caleb would
just kind of run around back there and try to
make something happen and then realize, oh, crap, I can't
outrun these guys and then he can't throw the ball
away or whatever it might be. And so because of that,
I think that's the biggest thing with Caleb going into
year two, and I think the biggest thing Ben Johnson's
(32:54):
going to help him with is like give him answers
and give him answers quickly to where he's not holding
onto the ball for so long. And the Bears also
had a terrible offensive line and they were trailing in
a lot of games, so they had to throw the
ball a lot. So you push all those things in together,
and it's like, oh, yeah, he's gonna get sacked a lot.
I think he got sacked seventy times last year, something
(33:16):
along those lines. So anytime you do that, you're gonna
be in trouble. And I just think he as a
quarterback needs to be a little He's not as athletic
as people think. Like he got more credit for his
athleticism than I think he deserved. I hope that that's
something he takes just for his sake, takes a step
forward with this year, is being a little bit more athletic,
(33:37):
being able to move outside the pocket and go get
three or four yards when you need it instead of
running around back there trying to make something happen.
Speaker 8 (33:44):
I appreciate it. Give me the take care of buddy.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Yeah, Mike, thank you. I appreciate the call. Yeah. And
my favorite part of the All Star Game last night,
in terms of the micd up was Clayton Kershaw. He
was very, very entertaining talking about his curveball, and he
doesn't throw a cutter and throws a slider and gets
a strikeout and gets pulled out of the game. That
I thought was really really cool. Here's the other thing,
(34:07):
it's been like four or five years. Do we got
to keep doing the Freddie Freeman Atlanta thing? Like he
won a World Series there? He now plays for the Dodgers.
He won a World Series there. We get it. Atlanta
loves Freddie Freeman. Freddy Freeman loves Atlanta. Do we gotta
do the whole Freddie Freeman in Atlanta thing every time
(34:28):
he goes back to Atlanta? Do we have to do that?
That's getting kind of old. The Hank Aaron tribute was
cool though. The way that they did all that on
the field, with the different videos and lights and then
shot a firework from home plate out towards left field
where he hit the home run. I thought that was
a really cool touch, not something that I expected at all.
(34:49):
And if you've never been down there to a game
like Atlanta is it is. They're still obsessed with Hank Aaron.
So back behind played at Truest Park. They have their
the Braves Hall of Fame, and it's like a walk
through thing. It's really cool, and central to it is
the Hank Aaron statue. It's kind of housed inside the
(35:11):
stadium and it has all these different bats and balls
and quotes and videos and jerseys and everything, and everywhere
you look there's still Hank Aaron stuff, Like there's Hank
Aaron jerseys, there's he's everywhere in Atlanta. He is a
legend to those people. And for them to honor him
that way, I thought that was really cool and I
thought they did a good job of doing that. So
(35:35):
kudos to the Braves and to Major League Baseball. Major
League Baseball is really good at that sort of stuff,
Like they're really good at that kind of thing to
kind of honor some of their best players in baseball.
All right, let's take a break, let's come back, and
when we do, we'll touch briefly on the Bengals and
(35:55):
the Ring of Honor and their new inductions. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty is the phone number as well if you
want to call in and be a part of the show.
That way, you can also vote on our Revivefitnessystems Dot
com poll question Revive Fitnessystems dot com and coach PJ.
Street that is at Audiolmore at ESPN fifteen thirty as well,
(36:18):
we'll take a break, We'll come back. This is since
E three to sixty hour number one, brought to you
by our friends at Skyline Chile on the home of
the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty, Sincy three sixty ESPN
fifteen thirty. My name is Austin Elmore. At two o'clock today,
(36:42):
John Sharon a to Z Sports on the Bengals and
the ongoing Schamar Stewart Saga Stewart now the only remaining
first round pick not to sign a contract, as the
Broncos late last night locked up their first round pick
Joda Baron from Texas Shamar ste Or. It's still not signed.
Rookies reporting in just a few days for the Bengals.
(37:04):
But some good news from the Bengals today, which was
which was that they announced their Ring of Honor class
for twenty twenty five and Dave Lapham leaping Lamar Parish
are those who are inducted will get in a lap
a little bit at the start of the next hour.
But I did want to spend a couple of minutes
on Lamar Parish because he's one of the best players
(37:26):
in franchise history. I think at times overshadowed by Ken
Riley and the Rattler and Ken of course now being
in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton and
deservedly so. But Lamar Parish at the same time was
one of the most explosive, important, exciting and fun players
that's ever played for the Bengals. And just kind of
(37:47):
reading through the press release from the team here and
what they said, and it's just this struck me. You're
gonna hear from Lamar in just a second, but this
struck me. This is from the release, it says known
as leap in Lamar. He is remembered by fans as
one of the most athletically gifted and exciting players in
team history. Recognized for his charismatic personality and flashy attire
(38:11):
in the seventies, his play was just as electrifying. He
remains the franchise's highest scoring defensive player, with touchdown returns
recorded on four interceptions, four punts, three fumbles, and one kickoff.
Listen to this stat he boasted an eighteen point eight
(38:33):
yard punt return average in nineteen seventy four, which is
still the best mark by any player in a season
since the merger in nineteen seventy. Think about that for
a minute. Since the merger in seventy his eighteen point
eight yard punt return against Washington, or his eighteen point
(38:54):
eight yard punt return average in seventy four is still
the highest. Think of some of the great punt returners
we have seen in the NFL since then. Think of
Devin Hester, of course, the all time great and a
Hall of Famer. You think of Deon Sanders, You think
of Josh Cribbs, you think of Dante Hall. You think
of like incredible, incredible punt returners that have played in
(39:17):
the league post seventy four and leap and Lamar Parrish's
record still stands. That's incredible. The release goes on to
say that his ninety yard punt return against Washington that
season is the second longest in Bengals history, and it
occurred in the same game in which he returned to
fumble recovery forty seven yards for a touchdown. He tallied
(39:40):
twenty five interceptions as a member of the Bengals, the
fifth most in team history, and then went on to
record twenty two more during stints with Washington and Buffalo.
His six Pro Bowl selections from seventy to seventy one
and seventy four to seventy seven are the second most
ever by a defensive player. When you look at his
(40:03):
total stats, Lamar Parrish eight time Pro Bowler, First team
or one. He was first team All Pro once with Washington.
Played in one hundred and sixty six games with forty
seven interceptions, four hundred and sixty two return yards, four
pick sixes, had a nine interceptions. I know we're focusing
(40:24):
solely on his Bengals time, but just his entire career.
He had a nine interception season in nineteen seventy nine
with Washington. That was the year he's the first team
All Pro. The following year he had seven in a season.
He had seven with the Bengals in seventy one, and
that was Sandwich between five and seventy and five and
seventy two. I mean, this dude was an incredible, incredible
(40:46):
defensive back and explosive player. And earlier today he was
on a Zoom call talking about this honor his getting
his start with the Bengals and now being put into
the Ring of Honor here is leaping Lamar Parish.
Speaker 10 (41:00):
Oh well, I feel great about that, and I'm glad
that the Bengals drafted me. I had a chance to
learn the game, and I had a chance to play
for one of the greatest coaches that ever lived, Paul Brown.
If I was a young boy, I came to the
(41:24):
Bengals as a defensive bank, which I never played it before,
and I had great coaching and Chuck Webber. One thing
about Paul Brown is that he's a great organizer and
he's gonna have great coaches around him. And I was
able to learn how to play the game from Chuck Weber,
(41:50):
and the game became simple to me because he broke
it down and taught me and roud of these dudes
and don'ts and uh stance and want to look for,
et cetera. So I had great coaching there and I'm
(42:13):
glad to have been chosen by Paul Brown.
Speaker 7 (42:18):
And going into the Ring of Honor now another accomplishment.
Talk about that and what it means to you.
Speaker 10 (42:26):
It means the world to me. In fact, Hey, this
is a dream. I had a dream as a little boy.
Of becoming the greatest uh clear a player in the world.
I had big dreams as a kid. I came in
(42:46):
calls sitting on the couch uh with my mother, telling
her that I was gonna play football. I was gonna
take care of her. And this honor means the world
to me. I put in a lot of work, about
a time out, lot of fear I'm not producing and
(43:10):
not being the best that I was capable man. So
to have been chosen made the world to me. And
I'm great. But I'm thankful for this committee for recognizing
to things that have done.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
That. Is Lamar Parrish earlier this morning after receiving news
of his induction into the Bengals Ring of Honor. Really
cool stuff. Cool to hear him say that. There was
also a quote in the release from Bengals President Mike
Brown that says this, Lamar was an exceptional player with
phenomenal quickness. As a cornerback, he was great in coverage.
(43:47):
Receivers could not shake free of him. As a punt returner,
he was excellent, probably the most exciting punt returner we
have ever had. He was a dynamic runner, quick and fast,
and it showed when he had the in his hands.
Lamar is very deserving of this honor. That's Mike Brown
talking about Leapin Lamar Parish, one of the two newest
(44:09):
inductees into the Bengals Ring of Honor. We'll talk about
the person he's going in with our guy, Dave Lapham,
mister Bengal, and you'll hear from lap when we get back.
This is since He three to sixty hour one, brought

With you all alone, all solo today, No Tony Pike,
no tone tones back on Wednesday. His first appearance back
on the air will actually be at ten am a

week from today, from ten am to noon for the
Tony and Moe Training Camp Show. I believe they're calling
it and looking forward to that as the Bengals get
set for training camp practice a week from today at
the practice fields adjacent to pay Course Stadium. Looking forward
to hearing all of that and looking forward to hearing
(45:36):
about Tony's time down in Florida where Tony is belly
up at the Dacre Deeck right now, Revivefitnessystems dot Com
Pole Question presented by Revivefitnessystems dot Com A coach PJ.
Street is live on Twitter at Audielmore at ESPN fifteen thirty.
What did you think of the home run swing off
at the All Star Game last night? In case you
(45:58):
missed it, it was sick six after nine in Atlanta
and Major League Baseball's new rule three batters each side,
three swings each batter, most homers at the end wins,
and it was the National League thanks to Kyle Schwarber
going three for three in his second round or in
the second round, and the National League beats the American
(46:19):
League in the All Star Game. Results of the pole
question are the leading candidate thirty three percent say I
fell asleep, twenty six percent say I loved it so fun,
twenty three percent say eh, I'm indifferent, and sixteen percent
say cool. But no Judge or Otani. Yeah, that's my
biggest beef with it. I don't like that Judge and
(46:41):
Otani and some of the starters from the game were
just no longer at the ballpark. That I thought was
a little bit tough. If you're gonna have a rule
like that, be able to use your best players and
be able to use guys that can go win an
All Star Game MVP. I just wish that they would
have been there and at the very least been win
to participate in it. I understand why they weren't. I
(47:02):
just wish that that was I think that's a bit
of an oversight by Major League Baseball. Those two weren't
even at the stadium, So there's that the American League falls.
Andrew Abbott, in case you missed it, pitched a scoreless inning.
He threw just thirteen pitches, got a flyout, ground out,
looked good. Ellie day La Cruz played in the game.
He was zero for two. He had a strikeout and
a flyout to left field, and the All Star Break
(47:26):
is officially continuing over the next couple of days. Reds
are in mill or excuse me, in New York on
Friday to take on the Mets. Here's the other thing
about Judge. I understand you got a couple of days. Wednesday,
Thursday game. On Friday, the Yankees play in Atlanta, So
it's like, is he really going that far away? I
(47:46):
mean's Aaron Judge, He's worth a bajillion dollars. He probably
just hopped on the PJA at Cobb County Airport and
flew back home. I get it, But whatever, nobody really
cares that much. I'll tell you what people do care about.
And excuse me as I take a drink again, dealing
with a sore throw is the Bengals Ring of Honor,
and the Bengals earlier this morning announced that Dave Lapham
(48:09):
and Lamar Parrish will be added to the team's Ring
of Honor in twenty twenty five. And we heard in
the last segment from Lamar Parish and now we're gonna
hear from Dave Lapam. Let me tell you a little
bit about Dave Lapham. First of all, I know Dave
and I've worked with Dave, and I just love Dave.
I can't get enough of him. He's one of the
nicest people you will ever meet in your life. He's
(48:32):
very funny, and you know, it's in this studio that
him and Dan do a lot of their shows, and
it's fun. I've had the chance to visit them inside
their booth at the stadium. It's just it's awesome. Lap
is the absolute best, and he is to me, the
perfect representation of Bengals football. Like when I think of him,
(48:54):
I think of the Bengals. When I think of the Bengals,
I think of Dave Lapham. When Jermaine Pratt intercepted that
pass in the wild card game against the Raiders, lap
was one of the first people I thought about. When
Evan McPherson made that game winning field goal in the
AFC Championship game, Lap was one of the first people
I thought about. Think of all the football that this
(49:17):
guy has seen and Drew, I'm gonna give you a
homework assignment right now. If you can pull this up,
if you can go back into the folders and get
the final play of that Raiders Wild Card game and
the walk off field goal for Evan McPherson the AFC
Championship game, and we'll try to play those in this
segment once you have them. And just listening to Dave
Lapham in his reaction, think of number one, a dude
(49:40):
that got here so long ago. This is going to
be his fiftieth year all together with the organization as
a player and as a broadcaster. Fifty years of Bengals
football that Dave Lapham has seen. And he is one
of the most versatile and impactful offensive line and in
(50:00):
the history of the franchise. He started at all five
different offensive line positions, started on the offensive line in
Super Bowl sixteen in Michigan in Pontiac, Michigan against the
San Francisco forty nine ers. Has been the analyst on
the radio since nineteen eighty six. He will celebrate his
(50:22):
one thousandth game with the Bengals this season in both
his playing and broadcasting careers. That is unbelievable. Mike Brown said,
it is rare to have someone who has the continuity
with a team that Dave Lapham has. He was a
smart player who represented us well and he continues to
do so with his work in the media. He has
(50:44):
a personality that fans identify with. Dave is someone we
are grateful to have in our organization and are very
proud to have him in the Ring of Honor. Drew
has the calls. Let's start with the Raiders wild card game.
This thirty years, thirty plus years of futility of the
Bengals not winning a playoff game, of multiple playoff heartbreaks
(51:07):
in the first round, Dave Lapham was there for all
of them. And then he was there for this.
Speaker 13 (51:13):
Fourth down and goal from the nine seventeen seconds to
go to play clock at three shotgun snap car throws
in the traffic.
Speaker 2 (51:23):
Ents to.
Speaker 12 (51:26):
Football coughing.
Speaker 14 (51:28):
Now, bam, bam, bam. How about that it ends on
a turnover?
Speaker 2 (51:34):
Man?
Speaker 14 (51:35):
How about itself?
Speaker 2 (51:39):
How cool is that? The joy in the voice of
one Dave Lapham. Now, there's a lot of people that
know lap only as that like the enthusiasm, the boisterous,
the excitement, the energy that he brings to the broadcast
and all that that he does on that. And then
there are others that remember him as being a pretty
damn good football player as well. In his ability to
(52:01):
play the offensive line and I'll read for you a
little bit what Dan Horde posted in just a moment.
But think back to that for Lap thirty years of
being the broadcaster and having seen very little success, certainly
very little playoff success. I bet if you would have
asked Lap, he would have died a happy man if
that was his last game seeing the Bengals win that
(52:23):
playoff game against the Raiders. But just a couple of
weeks later he got to be there when Evan McPherson
walked off to Kansas City Chiefs. Take a listen.
Speaker 13 (52:32):
This is a fifty two yard try for the twenty
two year old kid from Fort Payne, Alabama. The snap,
the put down, the kick, it has the deskt haf
baby hit is good, Yead. The Bengals had the lead
for the first time with six minutes and four seconds
to go. They've scored twenty one unanswered points and lead
(52:55):
the Chiefs twenty four to twenty one.
Speaker 2 (52:57):
So that was the tying field goal. And I think
Drew's going to bring up the game winning field goal
for when the Bengals beat the Chiefs in the AFC
Championship game. And the excitement that you hear in the
voice here is that field goal. Four years ago.
Speaker 13 (53:12):
He was a senior in high school in tiny four Paynt, Alabama.
Now the Bengals Super Bowl chances.
Speaker 2 (53:18):
Rest on his right foot. That kick those up? Yeh
yeh good.
Speaker 14 (53:26):
Coffin nows Bam bam bam. That is unblievable. The Cincinnati
Bengals come from behind on the road. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
Dan, it is no fluke, it is a fact.
Speaker 13 (53:43):
The Cincinnati Bengals are headed to Super Bowl fifty six.
Speaker 14 (53:49):
They just redefined the word resilient. I mean, resilient doesn't
really do justice. The coaches are right next to us,
and the booth right next to us, and you talk
about an explosion of guys that are just sheer, unadulterated joy.
I mean, that is unbelievable, unbelievable that the Cincinnati Bengals
(54:11):
are headed to CALLI for the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (54:14):
Amazing man, two years. How awesome is that? Thanks Drew,
I mean, how awesome is that to hear the excitement
and the joy and Lab's voice. I just think he
is such a great representative of the fan base, and
he stands for a lot of what some of us
are like. We really want them to succeed and Dave's
been just as disappointed as the rest of us, just
(54:35):
as excited, just as excited as the rest of us,
and on top of that, just being such a great player.
Earlier this morning, Dave also talking with the media. We
talked to extensively about what being inducted into the Bengals
Ring of Honor means to him.
Speaker 15 (54:50):
Here is Dave Laugham, It's just it's it's shocking, really
just to be here, really is. It's mind boggling. When
you first start playing the game of football as a
young young kid, you hope you might be able to
make it to the National Football League, and then if
you can make it there, you hope you can survive
(55:12):
a final cut and play, you know, and then if
you can play for a number of years, that's that's
the ultimate dream. And I was very fortunate to be
able to live that ultimate dreams as a player with
some great football teams. Man, we had, we had a
lot of success. Your grandfather was a football genius, and
(55:33):
we were the Cincinnati Bengals as an expansion franchise. People
feared the Cincinnati Bengals uh as as a football team,
not just oh, it's an expansion team. This was a
football team that could knock you off man, could beat
you any on any given Sunday. And to be part
(55:53):
of that was just just a remarkable experience something I'll
never forget. And learn so much from your grandfather and
how he put it together and people that he that
he had on his coaching staff and the players, and
I realized, you know that, hey, football is just like
a lot of things in life.
Speaker 16 (56:10):
It's the people.
Speaker 15 (56:11):
It's the people that you uh that you choose to
work with, It's the people that surround yourself with. And
that was a that was a big lesson, uh, to
be learned. There's a there's no question about that. And
then to be able to be allowed to broadcast UH
National Football League games with the Cincinnati Bengals in the
(56:31):
in the radio broadcast booth is is like, are you
kidding me? That's another dream, two separate dreams, and and
to be able to fulfill and live them both with
the Cincinnati Bengals organization is uh is just incredible in
my mind, something I never ever expected or anticipated. I hoped,
(56:54):
certainly hoped for it, and now to be able to,
you know, to to fulfill that whole and I can't
thank the Bengals organization enough. The Brown family, the Blackburn
family have been nothing but class to work with, and
they have given me opportunities that you know, are not
(57:14):
given to people in a normal, a normal course of
a career. And for the family and the organization to
have confidence in me to be able to play for
the organization, and then upon completion of playing for a
decade with the organization, to be allowed to broadcast and
(57:35):
communicate the successes of the organization for four decades is
just incomprehensible. So you know, that fourth decade coming up
this year will make forty years, like you described, fifty
years overall, and it's like, man.
Speaker 16 (57:51):
Where did those years go?
Speaker 2 (57:52):
It's like, I can't believe it.
Speaker 15 (57:54):
It just seems like yesterday that I was I was
still playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, and now here it
is a fortieth year broadcasting for the Cincinnati Bengals. And
so many great players, so many great games, so many
great coaches, I mean, so many tremendous memories because of
the excellence and performance of so many people. And that's
(58:17):
the beauty of the game of football. It's it's it's
the greatest team sport there is you get eleven eleven pieces,
eleven components that have to be operating efficiently and doing
their job. If everybody does their job, you're going to
have some success. And everybody is co dependent up on
the guy next to them of the person next to
them doing their job and doing that job well. And
(58:40):
if if everybody does do that, you're going to win
a lot of football games. And I think that's a
lesson that can be you know, taking the life you're
not You're not a lonesome a lonesome soldier out there.
You've got a You've got an army around you, no
matter what profession you're in or what you're doing for
your life's work or whatever the city situation is that
(59:00):
you may be part of. UH be a good teammate,
be part of the team in the right way, and
UH contribute to the team's success by doing exactly what
you're supposed to do on an everyday basis, going fully
prepared on a day to day basis, and take pride
in executing your job to the highest level you can
(59:21):
possibly execute it. And everything will work out. Everything will
work out great. And again I appreciate the the Brown
and Blackburn family for giving me the opportunity to do
that as a player with phenomenal teammates, and uh, you know,
as a broadcaster now with with great people in the
broadcast booth that I work with. I see Box Miller,
(59:44):
uh in the in the in the group here does
a great job of this on the Bengals Radio network,
and uh it's very versatile, very talented broadcaster himself. And
I see my man Dan Horde, who sets the standard
for play by play talent in the National Football League.
And to be able to to be able to work
every Sunday with these guys doing Bengals football, I don't know.
(01:00:10):
I don't think there's any anybody more fortunate than me.
I think I've got it better than anybody. There's no
there's no doubt about it. Nobody ever be able to
convince me otherwise. And doing exactly what I want to do,
who I want to do it with and where I
want to do it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
How great is that? How awesome is that? From Dave Lapham.
That's just it's just so cool. Good advice not only
about football but also about life from lap In there,
he talked about his broadcast team and his broadcast partner
Dan Horde and Dan of course friend of the show.
Dan wrote a lengthy Facebook post about lapse induction and
(01:00:47):
I highly recommend if you can to go check it out.
I know Dan posts it on his Twitter as well,
but he drops some knowledge in there, some stuff that
that I didn't even know about. But here's some of
Dan's words. He says, quote, I honestly believe that Lapp
is the greatest ambassador to the fan base that the
franchise has ever had, first as a player and now
(01:01:10):
as a broadcaster. The Bengals had a whopping twenty three
picks in nineteen seventy four, and Lapp turned out to
be the most valuable by far. In fact, Pro Football
Reference has him tied for eighteenth in approximate career value
for the entire seventy four draft, after playing in one
hundred and forty five games over ten season seasons in
(01:01:34):
a Bengals uniform. Some of the other guys in that
seventy four draft class were Jack Lambert, John Stalworth, Lynn Swan,
Mike Webster, all Steelers, by the way, and he goes
on to say this and kind of something that I
think we need to appreciate about Lap's legacy says Lap
is surely the most versatile offensive lineman and team history,
(01:01:56):
twice playing in all five positions in this same game.
Think about that. Twice in his career he played all
five offensive line positions in the same game. He was
a starting left guard on the Super Bowl sixteen team,
and he was the man who convinced his fellow offensive
(01:02:17):
lineman to go sleeveless in the Freezer Bowl, a display
of toughness that may have given the team a psychological
advantage against the San Diego Chargers. How awesome is that
Lap or Dan finishes up his post with this. Now
that Lap is in the Ring of Honor, there is
(01:02:38):
still a big goal remaining to punctuate a Cincinnati Super
Bowl win together by saying coffin nails Bam bam bam.
Great stuff from Dan. Go check out the whole posts.
Really happy for Lap and happy for Bengals fans and
curious to see how they change things up moving forward
for the Bengals Ring of Honor. All right, we'll take
(01:03:00):
a break. We'll come back when we do talkback time.
You can leave a talkback on the iHeartRadio app. Just
tap that little microphone next to the play button when
you search ESPN fifteen thirty. Leave us a message and
we will play it. This is Sincy three to sixty
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (01:03:18):
Now your Chat sixty carries on on ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station, Top.
Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
Top Talkbacks. Welcome in Sincy three to sixty. Hour number
(01:03:59):
two brought to you by Shirts Talk Packs brought to
you by Cincy Shirts. And they continue. Now let's get started.
Hey guys, it's Reggie. I just want to say I
love the All Star Game last night.
Speaker 6 (01:04:09):
That probably one of the better ones I've seen. Not
only did the National League win, so when the Reds
do make the World Series, we're gonna get home field advantage.
Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
Goop goop, And they brought back the team uniforms.
Speaker 8 (01:04:19):
Thought I was sweet.
Speaker 6 (01:04:21):
The Hank Aaron tribute was unbelievable. I thought I was
going back in time just watching that play out on
the field. They cut all the lights out and then
the firework for home run seven to fifteen was just unbelievable.
The swing off, I like they just forgot to mention
Kyle Sharers from Middletown.
Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
Yeah, I would have liked to see them say that
Schor was from Middletown, just to make sure everybody was clear.
But reg, I got bad news for you, Bigan. That
doesn't determine home field advantage in the World Series anymore.
How long ago did they do away with that? I
want to say, like six or seven years. It's been
longer than I think. Yeah, I could be wrong, but
I don't. Yeah. I kind of wish they would.
Speaker 3 (01:04:58):
Bring it back, to be honest, was kind of a
cool part, but I geah.
Speaker 9 (01:05:03):
Hello, this is former president Ronalder again. Well, the home
run swing off to end the All Star Game last
night is the equivalent to a field goal kicking contest
to decide a football game or a three point shooting
contest to settle a basketball game. It's great for exhibition
games like an All Star Game, but I don't like
it a bit as a replacement for the already to
(01:05:25):
gimmicky extra ending rules they use. Before you know it,
the MLB will be incorporating banana ball rules.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
Whatn't surprised me if Rob Manford one day is like, oh, yeah,
we're gonna do banana ball something banana ball wise.
Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
Can you imagine the rule of if a fan catches
the foul ball, you're out.
Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
That's my favorite rule in all of sports. Like I
don't I'm not like a huge like Savannah Banana's guy,
but that's my favorite rule in sports. Did you go
when they were here? I did not know I was working.
I wish, well, shocker, I wish that I would have, Like,
did I tell any I don't know if I told
this story on the air or not. But I won
the lottery to buy tickets and I didn't because I
(01:06:06):
didn't want to go, and I could have. It was
like sixty bucks each. I could have flipped four tickets
for easily, easily a few hundred dollars, maybe one thousand dollars.
I can't believe I didn't missed opportunity. The I'm a clown,
No fa fa fam about that.
Speaker 17 (01:06:25):
Happy Wednesday, everybody, congratulations Todave laugh them and leaping Lamar
Paris on.
Speaker 16 (01:06:30):
Make it a Bengals ring of honor. We are now
seven boomer.
Speaker 14 (01:06:34):
Size and days away man from Bengals training camp kicking off.
Speaker 18 (01:06:38):
Let's go, everybody who I'll.
Speaker 2 (01:06:42):
Tell you what. There is no remedy quite like that
of football. I know I'm gonna feel better when football
rolls around. Even though this talking about football rolling around
has me fired up, it'll be here before we know it.
Oh now, hold on, hold on. Do you feel the
opposite because you're a Browns fan, I just want to
make you sick.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
I just like watching football. I'm not too I'm not
too hopeful for who's going to start for the Browns.
Bullpen games? Bullpen games, that's that's mine. Have openers, Yes,
we're gonna have openers.
Speaker 2 (01:07:13):
Oh my god.
Speaker 3 (01:07:14):
I don't know if it's gonna be Flacco, maybe Sanders,
you know, maybe Dylan a.
Speaker 2 (01:07:19):
Little bit against the Bengals on September seventh. Throw the
lefty at him a little bit, throw them off, yeah, bullpen.
I hope so. I hope the Bengals can defend left
handed quarterbacks better than the Reds can hit left handed pitchers.
Speaker 3 (01:07:31):
Well, it's like most says, you be good or be interesting.
I kind of just want the Browns to be interesting.
They are always interested, that's.
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
True, Odie. This is they beating from the high seas.
Speaker 19 (01:07:44):
Paulie and I would like to tip our caps to
leap in Lamar Parish and Dave Lapham for they're soon
to be induction in the Bengals Ring of Honor. As
a side note, we also look forward to picking up
some commimorative coffin nails the Bengals Pro Shop this fall.
Speaker 3 (01:08:03):
There you go pro Shop. There's an idea of that. Yeah,
that's a that's an idea.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
Right, a commemorative coffin nail set. You know, it would
be fun. I know there's a lap and horrid bobblehead
of them like sitting at the desk, but it would
be funny if we could get like a faux co
bobble of them hammering in the nails of a coffin that. Yeah,
(01:08:27):
that would sell. Have like the logos of the AFC
North in it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
That would on it. That would probably sell. I would
buy fifty exactly.
Speaker 20 (01:08:37):
Hey, Annie, this is Brian from Independence, longtime listener, first
time in caller. Hey, you want to chime in about
the All Star Game. I was totally bummed because I
had a bet on the American League through Draft Kings
and Vandals and that did not pay out. But if
I had played it on Caesar's or Circa, it.
Speaker 21 (01:08:56):
Would have been a push.
Speaker 16 (01:08:57):
So the other sports listeners.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
Interesting, Thanks Drew, what do you know about this you're
more of a gambler than me.
Speaker 3 (01:09:06):
Yeah, that that's interesting because when you look at the
final score from last night, it says six to six
and then NL wins in you know, swingbreaker. So I'm
not exactly short. It must be, you know, it's in
the fine print of the terms and conditions. I guess
each book of each different book. But yeah, that I
(01:09:26):
might have to do some digging into that. Actually, that's
that's now interesting, Like it's an interesting quarry.
Speaker 2 (01:09:32):
The National League were like kind of heavy favorites right
last I saw they were like minus one twenty before
the game to actually win.
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
That feels about right, and i'd imagine that your team. Yeah,
so yeah, I don't know. That's that's fascinating.
Speaker 2 (01:09:45):
It's gonna be in a National League park for like
three years in a row though, right, Atlanta this year,
Philly next year, Wrigley the year after that, and I
think San Francisco is the favorite for twenty twenty eight.
So am I am? I crazy? Is that always how
it is? I don't know. I can't rattle a lot.
(01:10:05):
I can't.
Speaker 3 (01:10:06):
I honestly can't remember where the MLB it's one of
our games played last years.
Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
It was in Texas last year. It's one of those
things where it's like it happens once a year to
the point where I forget everything I knew the year before.
You know what I'm saying, Yes, like I always forget
the home run derby rules. Then they add all three
to them. I would say, they change them every year.
So that's like it's one of those things that you
do once a year and you forget in the year
of like how you're supposed to do it? Right?
Speaker 16 (01:10:32):
Aunie, what up?
Speaker 2 (01:10:33):
It's ice.
Speaker 22 (01:10:33):
You're doing a great job as all Te Pike throw
them down at the decor deck. Love it all Star
game last night, Love the swing off. Hate tie is
like kissing your sister. Nobody wants that ring him honor.
Congratulations to mister Bengal and lpen Lamar Parrish, well deserve
(01:10:54):
next year. Who Nation, we gotta get Bob Trumpy.
Speaker 14 (01:10:58):
In and as always remember this.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Like yeah, Bob Trumpy, my guy, Jim Breech. I'm curious
to see what they do, what they do to change it,
because here's the thing. We'd talk about this maybe a
little bit tomorrow, but like next year is the fifty
ninth Anniver the fifty ninth season of Bengals football, and
twenty twenty seven will be the sixtieth. What will they
(01:11:22):
do or are they doing something in preparation for something
special for the sixtieth anniversary That determines how they approach
the Ring of Honor next year.
Speaker 17 (01:11:34):
It was neat with the tie breaker, and this was Swarber.
I mean, I just felt like he was gonna knock
three out, and he did.
Speaker 2 (01:11:43):
He seemed confident, you.
Speaker 17 (01:11:46):
Know, Rooker Rose arrained the other three guys you hardly
even heard of. But good to see the National League winning.
It's the best all Star game by far.
Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
I agree with you the I agree with the point
that it's the best all Star game. I mean, the
NHL literally did away with their All Star Game and
just had an international competition instead.
Speaker 2 (01:12:11):
Yeah, who was it? I think you Joe Danaman yesterday
was talking about could that potentially be a thing with baseball,
like a USA against the World type of.
Speaker 3 (01:12:20):
You know, I just think with baseball, I just think
the with the way baseball is structured. I think it
the American League and National League, and I get that.
You know, it used to be that these players never
played each other, and that in today's world. You know,
you play everybody, which I support. But the other thing
is is that they're really hyping up the World Baseball Classic. Yeah,
(01:12:41):
and I think that just leaving that be and letting
that grow to what I think it could be, because
if you look around at some of the names that
have already committed to play in the World Baseball Classic,
I believe it's next spring.
Speaker 2 (01:12:55):
It is going to be quite the event. Yeah, without
a doubt. I agree.
Speaker 23 (01:13:00):
Hey, Austin Ken from the lext year Ken, I well,
remember the nineteen sixty seven All Star Game when Tony
Perez hit the game winning home run.
Speaker 7 (01:13:12):
And the fifteenth inning. I long for those days when
the All Star Game was played like a regular baseball game.
Speaker 23 (01:13:20):
Pictures batted, no time pitches and stuff that said.
Speaker 7 (01:13:26):
Last night it was kind of fine, I'll admit, gorids.
Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
Can you imagine how mad you could you could be?
Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
You would be if you were like the manager of
one of those teams in the All Star Game winning.
Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
Yeah, and back in those days, they probably played the
next day. Right. Yeah, Well, Ken, I'm glad you had
a little fun Washington. There you go, Austin, How you
doing today?
Speaker 14 (01:13:49):
Man?
Speaker 24 (01:13:50):
This is Ryan out in Milford, whatever, right, get my
walk in. I want to congratulate Lap and Perish on
their angles Hall of Fame induction and a favorite player
of mine besides somebody on the Reds would be a you,
Henny Oz of course, and Byron Buxton have a good day, man.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Yeah. Buxton's a fun dude. Ye yes. I saw him
by the way because he's one of those guys being
talked about his potential trade and he said, and you
know who knows how true this is, but he was like,
I have a no trade clause. I'm gonna be in
Minnesota twin for life. Like I'm not gonna uproot my family.
I want to be in Minnesota.
Speaker 22 (01:14:30):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:14:30):
So I thought that was kind of cool because you
just don't hear that from players that much anymore. But Suarez,
of course, did you think of anybody. I didn't outside
of Bobby with.
Speaker 3 (01:14:39):
I didn't think about like former Reds who no longer play,
you know, who play for a different team. If I
had thought of that, I would have said, Eannio Suarez,
because I love that guy, always have, always will.
Speaker 25 (01:14:51):
Tell Austin George the valley I was. I was thinking,
so Ellie has over I think he's got twelve errors over.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
The ninety two games.
Speaker 25 (01:15:00):
I'm willing to bet that most of those errors came
in the first part. I think in the last like
twenty four games. I saw somethinghere said he's only had
one in the last twenty four games and very little
in the last forty eight games. Most of the airs
came in the first half of the season. Is this true?
Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
Off the top of my head.
Speaker 25 (01:15:17):
Had great show too us.
Speaker 2 (01:15:18):
You're doing a good job. Oh thank you. I appreciate that.
Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure that
is true because of the gosh, I forget what it was.
Something in from like the month of June to now.
So in the last month and a half, he's really
cleaned up defensively and just been a much more consistent
(01:15:41):
defensive player. So I think you're correct. And a lot
of those came kind of early, and I think there
was like a week two where he had like four,
So yeah, I think it was. It's been cleaned up.
Speaker 3 (01:15:50):
A little bit from Elie's perspective, And coincidentally, about that
same time is when he really started to elevate himself
on the offensive side too, right, Like he's really pretty
much since that cub series at Wrigley. He is kind
of rocket ship shipped up all the way to where
he is now.
Speaker 26 (01:16:09):
Yeah, yo, Jeff, who is that?
Speaker 2 (01:16:13):
Is that Tony and the lord over there doing.
Speaker 24 (01:16:15):
Jealous shots at the Dakary deck and so he has
the key.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
I believe it is okay, thank you. This is Paul
from Price Hill.
Speaker 8 (01:16:27):
Paul.
Speaker 21 (01:16:28):
I think that lap one getting into the Ring of
Honor is a really good thing. I really like him
as a broadcaster, although occasionally gets on my nerves when
he has to call a whole game like this and
always everything's exciting, and then and he goes in the
locker room. He just talks to people there. That's how
(01:16:49):
it goes.
Speaker 2 (01:16:50):
Dude. Anyway, congratulations to it the There's there can be
nothing harder in this business than lap postgame lie locker
room after a loss like that has got to be
the hardest thing for anybody to do. And it goes
to show the amount of respect that those guys have
for him that they will talk to him. But it
(01:17:13):
is funny as hell, man, when it's the only thing
that makes losing like he get I don't know, it's
fun funny about losing his laps Ay. All right down
here in the Bengals locker room, tough loss. Today, got
their face beat in by the Philadelphia Eagles thirty seven
to seventeen. Let's talk to BJ Hill Bj the tush
(01:17:34):
push today. You know it's like it's so funny. All right,
this is this is our last one.
Speaker 9 (01:17:44):
In the box, shooting three.
Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
Schwarver.
Speaker 27 (01:17:48):
Who Kyle Schwarver, Wait to go, Kyle, Kip blow stay
quite a true?
Speaker 15 (01:17:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:17:57):
We should just we should just pay Kyle Schwarber all
the money, make a mare of Cincinnati. Whatever, whatever his
demands are, we need to meet them so he can
be a Cincinnati Red.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
Now you no, Yeah, I was gonna say he is
a free agent. Okay, I'm in favor of it. We
had one more come in here. Do you think he
would fix the potholes in the juvenile violence?
Speaker 8 (01:18:17):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
I'm I'm not one to doubt Kyle Schwarber. I will
not doubt Kyle Schwarber. We did have one come in
under the gun hit being.
Speaker 2 (01:18:25):
And Nattie out here is Sonny hots On, What up?
Speaker 14 (01:18:27):
Body?
Speaker 28 (01:18:27):
You're doing a great job solo. Dave Lapp, congratulations, Lamar Parris, Congratulations.
The All Star game was fantastic, bring back the home
fit advantage. I liked that the body language from the
swing off from both sides of the camp on the
benches were excellent. Them boys like they enjoyed themselves like
a little kid out there baseball hitting the home run
(01:18:48):
with this one. So keep this going? Is it football
season yet?
Speaker 23 (01:18:52):
This?
Speaker 2 (01:18:52):
Man? I can't wait.
Speaker 3 (01:18:54):
It's amazing what just caring can do for a television product. Yeah,
like all those players cared and wanted to win. It
was a you know, it doesn't even determine home field
advantage anymore. It's a meaningless exhibition. And Stephen Kwan hit
that to tie the game. He was busting it down
the line like it was Game seven of the ALCS. Yep,
he was. That's true.
Speaker 2 (01:19:15):
That's it all right, wonderful talkback's completed. We will be
giving away a Cincy Shirts gift card at the end
of this week for our Talkback of the week. Looking
forward to that. When we get back though, Oh, do
our Postman Law injury report. We're gonna have two segments.
We'll do a Postman Law Injury Report, and then after that, maybe,
just maybe it's time for the open preview with Drew
(01:19:36):
wester Heidie. We'll see, We'll see what the time looks like.
This is since he three to sixty ESPN fifteencus.

Speaker 2 (01:20:45):
Hey, do you run a small business?
Speaker 1 (01:20:46):
Peb Sincy three sixty continues on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (01:20:55):
Since three sixty continues ESPN fifteen thirty High on Austin.
Coming up about ten minutes from right now, John sheeran
great writer from A to Z Sports, talking Bengals including
Shamar Stewart. More on that and just a little bit.
We'll also get into ESPN NFL executives and what they
said the ESPN article with NFL executives and what they
(01:21:18):
said about Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase. That's coming up
quick hits with Moegger this afternoon as well, but today
is Wednesday. Tomorrow they get underway at royal Port Rush
in Northern Ireland for the Open Championship. Another major is
here as the one hundred and fifty third Open Championship,
(01:21:39):
and our golf expert Drew wester Heidi is with us today.
Now are are Shane Lowry and Rory McElroy. Are they
the favorite since this is their home country?
Speaker 3 (01:21:49):
Well, let's just go right to the top there the
betting odds. Curtsey of ESPN bet Scotti Scheffler is your favorite,
oh at plus five to fifty, but Rory is in
second at plus seven fifty. John rom twelve to one,
Bryson Deshambo eighteen to one, and then a group at
twenty five to one, Xander Schaffley, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludwig Aberg
(01:22:11):
come on lude, Tira Hatton Yes, and then Shane Lowry
So Lowry twenty five to one, the defending champion. Last
time it was played at Royal Port, Rush finished that
tournament fifteen under, six shots ahead of Tommy Fleetwood who
finished so those second. Ry McElroy missed the cut. Oh
(01:22:32):
the last time famously went out, had a terrible first round,
terrible first part of his second round, made a very
very valiant charge to try and make the cut, came
up just short. So he Rory will unfinished business for
Roy McElroy this week.
Speaker 2 (01:22:49):
That was twenty nineteen. Okay, five years ago, yeah, six years,
six years ago that that happened. Okay, interesting, Now is
this a typical course like Ireland course open course where
it's just kind of.
Speaker 3 (01:23:03):
Yep links golf links golf you know, a lot of
a lot of dunes, a lot of hills, a lot
of heavy grass, a lot of ball on the ground.
Speaker 2 (01:23:10):
Are there like any redeeming qualities, like any famous qualities
of this particular golf course that we should be looking for.
Speaker 3 (01:23:19):
I don't really know much about Royal Port Rush. This
is only the third time they've hosted the Open Championship. Oh,
they hosted it in nineteen fifty one. Oh and then
took a long sabbatical and then hosted it in twenty
nineteen and then and now back. I think the RNA,
which is the you know, golf association over there in
Europe which puts this tournament on, they are starting to
(01:23:41):
work Royal Port Rush into the Open RODA. So that
is like Saint Andrew's, Carnoo, Ste Mary and all those
courses that you know a lot of people have watched
in the past. They're starting to factor Royal Port Rush
into that rotation. So we'll be seeing more of it
as the years go on. But as I said, this
is only the third time they've hosted the Open Championship.
Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
There's some pretty amazing looking holes on this course. I'm
on the website right now kind of going through each
one and number one. I love the names of holes.
Speaker 3 (01:24:09):
Yes, that is a very like Open Championship thing, is
that every hole is named.
Speaker 2 (01:24:14):
Yeah, and one of them is called PG Stevenson's yep.
Another one is called Huey's yep feather bed, which is fascinating.
But yeah, I mean this this style of golf where
there's no trees, but there's some fixed stuff, there's some hills,
very narrow link style golf. That is.
Speaker 3 (01:24:34):
It's the purest form of golf. Well, this is where
it originates, correct, And the players they get creative, they
kind of have to think they're away because you know,
when you play in America, a lot of it is
hit it as far as you can down there, pull
the wedge out, hit it as high as you can
so it'll stop on the green. Out here, you can
find yourself in some tricky areas and fine players use
(01:24:55):
really creative avenues and hills and bumps to get the
ball near the holes. So it's very fun to watch.
Outside of the Masters, this is my favorite week of golf. Okay,
all right, so who are you picking like, who's your guy?
I mean, obviously you talked about the favorites. Yes, is
there somebody under the radar that you'll be keeping an
eye out on? So I'm keeping my eye on Tommy Fleetwood.
(01:25:17):
Tommy Fleetwood finished second. Famously has not won a PGA
Tour event. He has the most top tens without a
win since gosh knows what.
Speaker 2 (01:25:25):
He is just finished second behind Keegan as well. Correct.
Speaker 3 (01:25:28):
You know, we have the big ring culture over here
in the States, and you know what have you won?
It's like, well, Tommy Fleetwood's the best player without a major.
Speaker 2 (01:25:35):
I think, Okay, who do? I think He's got a
great chance.
Speaker 3 (01:25:39):
But ultimately my pick for the week, my officials taking
my claim in the pick. I'm taking John Rahm. Okay,
I'm gonna take John rom to win at twelve to one.
He's been playing well. He's played well in the majors.
He had a disappointing major season last year. He's kind
of gotten progressively better in each major he's played. So
I'm gonna take John Rahm. A couple other you know bets,
take him if you will, my guy, Jordan Speak top
(01:26:02):
five plus nine hundred, Oh, I will take some of
that Fleetwood to top ten plus two sixty Roy McElroy
to miss the cut. Oh no, it's plus four seventy five,
saying I'm gonna take it?
Speaker 2 (01:26:15):
Are you? Are you one of those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:26:18):
I'm not a Rory hater. He annoys me some the
way he's you know, because I was really pulling for
him and the Masters. I really wanted him to win
the Grand Slam and that was great. And then you
go to the PGA and he kind of he his
driver which he had been using, was cited as being
non conforming.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
As was Scott Scheffler.
Speaker 3 (01:26:38):
Was Scotti Scheffler's And that stuff is not supposed to
leak out into the media. That is supposed to All
that stuff is supposed to happen behind closed doors. And
it doesn't mean that Rory McElroy was cheating. It happens
what you think, It happens all the time. It happens
all the time. These players get cited for non conforming
drivers quite a bit. I do think it's lame how
(01:26:59):
Rory has hasn't talked as much correct and that is
you know. So I've always gone back and forth with
McElroy throughout his entire career. So I'm not a McElroy hater,
but he kind of sounds like a little bit, you
know what, maybe I'm starting to become one.
Speaker 2 (01:27:12):
But like I said, this is an exciting week. The
weather making the man to miss the cut in his
home country again, even though it happened once before. It's
just disgusting. I don't sleep at night.
Speaker 3 (01:27:22):
To round that out, Big Bob Robert McIntyre top twenty
plus one seventy five. The weather, It's going to be wet,
in windy, wonderful, which is exactly what you want with
an open championship. TV viewings gets going bright and early,
one thirty am to four am thirty on Peacock, four
am to three pm on USA on Thursday, same on
(01:27:43):
Friday five to seven am on USA and an NBC
seven am to three pm on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:27:48):
Did you see the other golf news about Wyndham Clark.
Speaker 3 (01:27:52):
Yes, how he was banned from Oakmont because he destroyed
a locker room. Yes, he's been working with a mental
coach for quite a while.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
And I was gonna say, if you've watched Full Swing,
you know about that, Like his therapist is mental coach apparently,
according to Golf Digest. He's been suspended from Oakmont, which
is where the US Open was held, correct, because of
the way he destroyed the locker room. He can be
reinstated contingent upon full repayment of damages, making a meaningful
(01:28:21):
contribution to a charity of the club's choice, and completing
counseling and or anger management classes. That is hilarious. These
these major tournament like country clubs. These people they walk,
they are the big swingers. Oh yeah, world, and they
will they'll get every every demand from him if he
(01:28:42):
ever wants to come back. Well, hopefully for Wyndham Clark,
it was a wake up call so he understands you
can't be acting like that. Even though sometimes when we
get really mad we just want to destroy things. Yep.
Better to do it to a cabinet or a locker
than a person, correct, And that's ultimately all that matters. Okay, Drew,
thank you, You're welcome, Plagos. Keep a cube posted on
(01:29:03):
the Open as the week goes on. When we come
back though, John Scheren for covering the Bengals for eight
of Z Sports and me now figuring forgetting how to talk.
As we reach the end of our number two is
just about right on Q so let's talk to somebody else.
John will join us next on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 27 (01:29:19):
iHeartRadio Earth is here with a new EASTCA sub since
e three to sixty of Bout Cincinnati from Cincinnati spontered
in part by Pennstation East Co Subs, handcrafted hot grilled subs,
fresh cut fries and lemonade.
Speaker 1 (01:29:33):
It's all about good taste. Pennstation East CoA subs order
online today. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (01:29:43):
Hi, Hello, welcome in our number three of Cincy three
to sixty. On ESPN fifteen thirty, I Moss to Elmore
riding solo today. Big Tone back next week, just in
time for training camp. As the Bengals will get things
underway next week. We will be there live looking forward
to the coverage from Bengals training camp. So while we
get ready for the last week of the quote unquote
(01:30:06):
off season, we look for all the different things that
need to be buttoned up between now and the start
of training camp. And none is more notable than Shamar
Stewart and my guy John Sheeran, who I've said on
several occasions is one of my absolute favorite people to
follow on Twitter. I love reading his work on A
to Z Sports and he's become a great friend of
(01:30:27):
the show and he joins us now and John. You
really got things stirred up yesterday with Shamar Stewart. What's
going on here? Explain to people what you heard, what
you wrote, and what happened afterwards when it comes to
Shamar Stewart.
Speaker 30 (01:30:42):
For the record, I was not the first person to
write about this, but I did write about it. What
happened was There is a college football podcast called The
Cover Three Podcasts. One of the co hosts is Bud
Elliott's well known within college football circles.
Speaker 2 (01:30:56):
He said that a.
Speaker 30 (01:30:57):
Source who is well familiar with Texas A and M
said that Shamar Stewart has been working out at Texas
A and M during the team's summer camp and he's
been fully quote unquote fully involved within workouts. And he
told Bud that he wouldn't be surprised if he saw
Shamar Stewart back on the team this year, implying that
(01:31:18):
working out with the team meant that he had intentions
on joining Texas A and M again. And of course
this is illogical because he was drafted by the Bengals.
The Bengals in this rights, he's out of college. We've
never seen this before. So this sparked a whole conversation
about how if Schamar was really considering this, because he
is so at odds with the Bengals over his contract,
(01:31:39):
he would potentially have to go to court with the
NCAA with the NFL, which I don't know if you
guys are having anything to do with the NFL right now,
but they're in a lot of legal trouble right now
with what's going on, so they got a lot of
stuff on their play Anyways, I don't know if Shamar
was trying to squeezle in there, but that was the
report that he reported on that podcast, so we covered
it Creative These Sports. It got picked up by other
places as well. And then Kelsey Conway, who is a
(01:32:01):
great Bengals reporter for since doan dot Com, confirmed that
Shmark Stewart is not practicing with texting them the team.
He was practicing there at just at the facility because
he lives down in Texas when he's not in Cincinnati
preparing for Bengals training camp, which was definitely one of
the possibilities that we laid out to the article because
again it was a report, wasn't confirmed, but that that's
what was going on.
Speaker 16 (01:32:21):
And I think the most important thing here, Austin.
Speaker 30 (01:32:23):
Is that the fact that this was a possibility and
everyone kind of immediately jumped to that, it kind of speaks.
Speaker 16 (01:32:29):
To what the situation is is right now with the
team in Manas.
Speaker 2 (01:32:32):
Yeah, that's what I was about to say, because you know,
as Bengals fans, everybody would just like this to be
buttoned up and done and he shows up a training
camp and starts practicing and he's productive. But for those
of us in the media and at this particular point
in the year, I was like even said it on
the air. I was like, I don't even care. Let's
just say that this is true. What exactly would happen?
And you're saying that he would have to take the
(01:32:52):
NFL to court if let's just for the for the
sake of the situation, let's say he wants to return
to Texas A and M he would have to take
the NFL to court and able to do.
Speaker 30 (01:33:02):
That, Yeah, because this is not allowed by any means.
But obviously with the NCAA like there's I mean, everything's
on the table legality with litigation, right, So technically he
could be allowed to sit out this entire football season
if he doesn't sign his contract with the Bengals, and
then he could re enter the NFL draft next year
(01:33:23):
and then excuse me, the Bengals would not be able
to allow to draft it. And obviously the Bengals wouldn't
draft him that situation anyways. But that is like, that
is the true doomsday scenary period. It is included yeah,
in the NFL CBA, It is not included anywhere that
you can get drafted and then go back to your
original college team. But obviously, you know, in today's world,
with nil, he would have opportunities to make some of
(01:33:43):
the money that he would lose by not getting you know,
the contract that he would be getting for the Bengals here,
and then he could you know, theoretically recuperate a lot
of that value by going into the NFL the next year.
But again, there is no actual path to doing that
other than just you know, just forcing your way through
the court system. And who knows if you could actually
win that battle, who knows how long that legal batt
would actually take I'm not a lawyer, I have no
(01:34:04):
expertise in this area. I would imagine it would be
a very lengthy process where it probably wouldn't even get
resolved until, you.
Speaker 16 (01:34:09):
Know, the beginning right after the beginning of the next season.
Speaker 30 (01:34:12):
So it is a truly like out of this world
idea that was brought up by that. But yes, I
guess he could theoretically, if that was his choice, he
could theoretically take this to courd CVD win.
Speaker 2 (01:34:22):
Yeah, and you know, I don't want that to happen,
but part of me would be enamored by the idea
of it actually happening and wondering what the fallout would
be at what point, like do you do you see
his side at all? Just eventually just saying all right,
let's just get this over with, Let's get the guy
in training camp, and we'll figure it out from there,
because it doesn't really seem worth it for him at
(01:34:44):
this point. He's the last guy left.
Speaker 16 (01:34:48):
He is the last guy left.
Speaker 30 (01:34:49):
And I would imagine that with the route that they've
taken by, you know, going to the media and throw
all these different avenues and channels and the things that
he said, it almost seems like they've done themselves in
the spot where they have to get something out of this,
Like they can't just eliminate the possibility of getting any
concession from the Bengals, which is why I kind of
foresee this taking maybe even longer than the Trey Anderson
(01:35:12):
situation because of how much that like that they've said,
the fact that he isn't under contract at all, They can,
I guess, in theory, afford to wait this out because
of that situation where he can't technically get fined by
not being the team employees. So I think that they
are extremely dug in in this case, and that is
why they're not going to allegate from this until they
(01:35:32):
get something in return, whether that is an advancement on
the signing bonus payment or whatever the case may be,
whatever the negotiables are in these contracts that are typically
boil or played, I would imagine they're not going to
just take nothing at this point.
Speaker 2 (01:35:45):
Talking to John Shearon, a to Z Sports covering the
Cincinnati Bengals, the announcement earlier today about Lamar Parrish and
Dave Lapham going into the Ring of honor, what was
your reaction to that.
Speaker 16 (01:35:58):
Fans got it right?
Speaker 30 (01:35:59):
I've been pounding the table from Lamar Parish for the
past two years.
Speaker 2 (01:36:03):
I thought that this was also the right year to get.
Speaker 30 (01:36:05):
Dave lap Him in because I think there's been some
confusion or maybe some mystery about the changes coming to
the Ring of Honor, and I can only imagine that
they are going to make any changes about the process,
it might get tougher more difficult for the current nominees
or the nominees for this year to maybe get into
the future years. And I think Dave Lapham definitely deserves
it at some point. I'm glad it is this year,
(01:36:26):
even if his career didn't include the most accolades or
beyond just games played and games started. He is mister
Bengal and he is synonymous with the team more than
any player who's ever played for that franchise before. But
I think with Lamar Parrish, he's arguably the most underrated
Bengal in team history. And I think that's because he
played in the earliest days and he was only here
for a little bit more than half of his career.
(01:36:46):
But in those eight years, six Pro Bowls, twenty five
interceptions elected With the ball in his hands, he's often
forgotten because he played on the opposite side of Ken Riley.
And I think, honestly, you know, I don't think a
lot of people like to talk about this because it's
not the most comfortable station, But Lamarn Parish is seventy seven,
and this fan base watched Ken Riley passed away before
he got to witness all of the Ring of Bonnor
(01:37:08):
and the Hall of Fame ceremonies for himself.
Speaker 16 (01:37:09):
So I think it's extremely important.
Speaker 30 (01:37:11):
For because this fan base has power to put these
guys in this position and give them the recognition. Is
important to prioritize some of those guys who really paved
the way for the players that we saw in the
eighties and in the two thousands and everywhere after that.
So I'm really happy that both these guys, who were
both in their seventies, get the witnesses for themselves.
Speaker 2 (01:37:27):
Yeah, I'm right there with you, and it makes me
want to pound the table, of course, for Bob Trumpy
as well, for a number of different reasons. And you
kind of talk too about how underrated Lamar Parrish was,
and I don't know if people understand how much he
and Ken Riley helped one another because the quarterback didn't
(01:37:48):
have too many places you felt comfortable throwing the ball.
Speaker 16 (01:37:52):
One hundred percent.
Speaker 30 (01:37:53):
Like the game was completely different back then, and like
you know, practicing against Isaac Curtis and who of course
essentially still the rule of against legal contact, right, but yeah,
the game was completely different and interceptions were a lot
more common than they are nowadays. But even still, I
think Lamar Parrish's athleticism it really transcended his generation. And
if he played in the bigger market, I think he
(01:38:13):
would have got a little bit more recognition. But then again,
he did go to Washington and he got his name
out there a little bit more, and he put together
one of the very best careers a seventh round pick
has ever had. If you go by p pobow references
Approximate value metric, he's third all time for all seven
round picks. Fourth coincidentally is Max Montoya. He's probably is
gonna get a ring of honor here sooner rather than later.
(01:38:34):
But completely, like like you said, completely underrated player in
a great athlete.
Speaker 2 (01:38:38):
All right, other thing, John training camp is coming up
quickly and I can't believe it's already almost here. We
know about Stuart Hendrickson, and whatnot. But for you, are
there any kind of under the radar storylines that you're
going to be paying attention to as Bengals training camp
gets underway next week.
Speaker 16 (01:38:58):
So I'm actually writing in an article right now now.
Speaker 30 (01:39:00):
I'm previewing the depth chart position by position, and I'm
on cornerback right now, and I think the top four
at this position could go any way possible. I think
with Dak still coming back from injury, it creates a
little bit of a variable as to when he's going
to be able to practice or when he's going to
be you know, his full sell. Then where they're actually
going to place him at the start of this he
could be the number one cornerback on the outside.
Speaker 16 (01:39:22):
He could be the next Leon.
Speaker 30 (01:39:23):
Haul and he's the nickelback who also plays a little
bit on the outside. If Cam Taylor Brad has to
earn a spot back after being benched twice last year,
is DJ Turner or Josh Newton would be the first
cornerback off the bench if they're going to stay in
these you know, in the three cornerback sets with nickel,
I don't know how to order these top four guys.
I think I have a decent guess with with Dax
being at the top, and maybe you know, Newton squeezing
(01:39:44):
out that third spot because of how you know, well
received he's been through the offseason program. But I'm really
interested to see how these reps are divvied up between
these guys, and I think the scheme is going to
be a little bit different where these guys are going
to fallow around other wideouts. I'm not gonna be stuck
on one side of the line spinners, and maybe that
changes things. But but I really don't know how to
order these top four cornerbacks and I'm really intrigued to
see how they're used in training camp.
Speaker 2 (01:40:05):
Yeah. I was thinking about that too with Cam Taylor Britt,
just because I mean, CTV might be the most athletic
player pound for pound on the roster. Is there a
world in which it makes sense for him to be
the nickel guy?
Speaker 30 (01:40:19):
I think yeah, Like I think that, or potentially getting
reps in safety. He played a little bit of safety
in Nebraska as well, just to utilize something that downhill
athleticism that he has, and I think we kind of
saw a glimpse of that in training camp, or excuse me,
in the offseason program where he's following Mikessetti into the slot.
He's making plays out of there as well. So yeah,
like they have options now that they don't have Mike
(01:40:40):
Hilden and it could just be a situation where you
handle that position by committee if you don't have full
trust in one guy to handle that spot entirely, or
you want to maximize the athleticism that this group as
a whole really does have. I think Josh Newton makes
sense for that spot because he might be the most
athletically limited of the quartet that we're speaking of, but
he's got the physicality and so it just came till
(01:41:02):
the great right like that. That was what his biggest
strength was when he was first coming onto the scene
in twenty twenty two and twenty three. He was a
great guy at the line of scrimmage. He could press,
he could tackle. Some of that was lost a little
bit last year, but maybe he can find it again
in a new position.
Speaker 2 (01:41:14):
Do you think that's gonna be the single biggest difference
fans notice in the Al Golden defense compared to the
lu Ana Rumo defense.
Speaker 30 (01:41:22):
I think it's that and how they scheme up pressures
up front. I think you're you're gonna see a lot
more twists and stunts. I think you're gonna see potentially
guys but in different alignments more often than not. I
don't know if we're gonna see Trey, you know, Hendrickson
when he comes back on the left side more often
than not. But I think that the way that he
schemes up pressures with man coverage in the back end,
there's gonna be a lot more variation with that. All
(01:41:44):
the talk has been about how it's supposed to be
more simplified defense and everything, but I think that in
terms of just the coverage packages, you're gonna see a
difference in how they scheme up pressure and how they
compliment that with man coverage in the back end.
Speaker 2 (01:41:57):
If I gave you a date of September first, before
or after September first, will we have an answer on
Trey Henderson.
Speaker 16 (01:42:07):
I'm gonna go on a limits before Okay.
Speaker 30 (01:42:10):
For whatever reason, I feel like this gets resolved sometime
during the preseason, and I think it's because you're still
in a situation where both sides know it's best for
both of them to get something done. The knowledge of
how this has impacted them for the past two years,
with Burrow, with Higgins, with Chase. I think there's been
(01:42:31):
enough time this offseason, really, just the past couple of
years of the constant dialogue with all this happening, I
don't think it's going to get quite to that point.
I honestly do think it could with Shamar Stewart because
of how that situation is unsholding. But I do think
with Trey he will he I do believe that he
thinks that he's serious about sitting out games, but I
(01:42:53):
think his training camp rolled along and the preseason eventually
gets here, he will miss being out there, and I
think there will be a concerted effort to get that
done before it gets really up to the buzzer.
Speaker 2 (01:43:04):
Yeah, I tend to agree with you. John Shearon a
to Z Sports, Thanks so much for your time here today.
What are you working on and how can people follow
along to what you are working on?
Speaker 30 (01:43:14):
Yeah, so keep following along at a Z sports dot com,
Backslash Cincinnati and on YouTube three videos a week at
eighties Sports Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (01:43:21):
Awesome, John, thanks so much, man. Thanks awesome that is
John Shearon a Z Sports and again a wonderful follow
John Underscore Underscore Sharon on Twitter. He is smart, he's funny,
and relatable, and was described as a versatile guy according
to Jeff Hobson, which is incredibly important for anybody in
(01:43:42):
any position, any profession, anytime, anywhere, to be spoken highly of.
By Jeff Hobson. Looking forward to reading more from John
and having him on the show maybe weekly. We'll see,
I have to I should ask him that sometime about
getting him on the show during the season a little
bit more frequently when we come back. Let's talk to
(01:44:03):
each other. Five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty.
I forgot what I was doing for a minute. Uh.
ESPN has done their executive lists where they ranked the quarterbacks,
they rank the wide receivers, they rank every position. Let's
talk about what the they released today, which was wide receivers,
what they released earlier this week, which was quarterbacks. That's
all next. This is since he three to sixty ESPN
(01:44:25):
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:44:26):
Now you're back on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (01:44:39):
Since he three sixty ESPN fifteen thirty, twenty five minutes
from right now, Moe Egger Quick hits MO three to
six this afternoon, looking forward to talking with him, seeing
what he's got coming up on his show. Phone lines
open five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. We'll
get to the lists made ESPN this week in just
(01:45:02):
a moment, but first we've got time for a couple
of phone calls. Let's go to Jeff in Virginia. Jeff,
what's up?
Speaker 18 (01:45:09):
Happy Wednesday, Austin. Yes, shout out to lappin Lamar, both long, long.
Speaker 8 (01:45:15):
Overdue, obviously.
Speaker 18 (01:45:17):
Yes, shout out to Ben Baby who got his contract
extended with ESPN.
Speaker 2 (01:45:22):
That's awesome.
Speaker 8 (01:45:25):
People who don't live.
Speaker 18 (01:45:26):
In cities with bel teams don't know how bad it
can be. And we are so lucky to have the
beat Riders that we do, There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 2 (01:45:36):
Yes, and.
Speaker 18 (01:45:38):
Last night was probably the most I've watched of an
All Star game in like twenty years. Oh, the uniforms,
the whole the whole five around.
Speaker 8 (01:45:46):
It was just great.
Speaker 18 (01:45:47):
I'm not a fan of the in game chit chat,
but Kershaw was perfect. Yeah, and I think, uh, you know,
seeing Schwarber was great and uh, my all time favorite
non red is defin Freddie Freeman has been.
Speaker 8 (01:46:02):
That way for a long, long, long.
Speaker 18 (01:46:07):
So much respect for that guy and uh, quickly off topic,
your boy, Terry McLaurin, Tray Hendrickson, it's the exact same
thing as Trey Henderson. He did the press conference yesterday.
Speaker 16 (01:46:21):
The fan base is.
Speaker 18 (01:46:22):
Turning on him all of a sudden, Oh, he's thirty
years old, we can't pay him that much money. And
it is just an exact duplicate of the way Trey
has handled what's going on with him, except the press
conference was much closer to the opening a training camp
and the exact same reaction from this fan base as
(01:46:45):
there was from ours, as you might expect.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
And Terry is not happy and understandably so. I mean,
this is obviously like his big deal coming into you know,
his his I guess, life changing deal in the NFL.
This is a dude that is first, first, last teammate,
first class team leader. He may not be you know,
Jamar Chase and DeVante Smith and AJ Brown and Justin Jefferson,
(01:47:09):
but he's a really damn good wide receiver. And I
would love to know what the hang up is because
I think he knows well enough to know he's not
those type of players, but he still deserves something fair
for the impact he brings to the team and certainly
what he would bring to Jade and Daniels each and
every day.
Speaker 18 (01:47:29):
Yeah, and that is the heart of the discussion up
here is you know, he deserves to be paid something.
Exactly what that number is cannot be determined. And you know,
he played the first eight years of his career without
a quarterback and now he's got one. So it's gonna
be real interesting to see how it plays out.
Speaker 2 (01:47:46):
Yeah, yeah, thanks, Jeff. I appreciate the phone call. I
appreciate it, and I'm with you, it's gonna be it's
just different. You know, he's eight years into the league
now and you've made a little bit of money, but
you're trying to get that last one and what exactly
does it look like? And how do you measure the
impact of a player beyond just what is felt on
the field. And NFL teams always have to deal with
(01:48:09):
I want to pay you for what you're going to do,
not what you have done. It's unbelieva. It's hard for
me to believe that Terry McLaurin has already been in
the league for as long as he has that it's
just hard to believe. But we've got time for another one.
Dick In Dayton, what's up, Dick?
Speaker 31 (01:48:25):
Well, Austin, how are you today, buddy?
Speaker 2 (01:48:28):
I'm not too bad man, how are you good?
Speaker 22 (01:48:31):
Good?
Speaker 31 (01:48:31):
You know, Austin. I think we can build the record.
The Reds have had to be fifty and forty seven
to the ball Star break. I think it's a good thing.
But I think I was telling somebody else that the
pitching in the ninth and they got to get the lead.
But they've got the offense and I think they it's
(01:48:53):
a possibility, Austin, that they can make a wild card
if it's all together.
Speaker 2 (01:48:58):
Austin, you know, yeah, I'm right there with you. I
think if they if they play up to their potential,
they'll be right there in it until the very end.
Speaker 13 (01:49:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 31 (01:49:07):
And you know another thing, it's it's going to be
exciting this year Burrow and Chase and it's going to
be I really think that they get off to a start.
I don't know what they hope it. But do you
think they can go as far as the super Bowl
in twenty twenty five? You think with that.
Speaker 2 (01:49:24):
Schedule, I think a super Bowl would be a stretch.
I just don't have enough confidence in the defense and
in the offensive line. But with Joe Burrow, it does
kind of feel like anything as possible though, Dick.
Speaker 31 (01:49:37):
Hey, Austin, I still still talk, but I'll never forget
my birthday. I was so glad to meet you and
Tony and the rest of the people. That was a
good day.
Speaker 2 (01:49:47):
Yeah you think, yeah, Dick, it was. It was a
pleasure to see and thank you for the phone call.
And you know, Tony talks often about when Dick came
into the studio and Tony got to experience that with him,
and it was pretty And I love this job. I
really do. Today, at least the NFL executive Position rankings, executives, coaches,
(01:50:12):
and scouts are asked by ESPN to rank players at
each position. They do a top ten quarterbacks, wide receivers,
defensive linemen and whatnot. So Tony and I we've already
talked about the tackles and edge rushers and safeties and
running backs and how you Chase Brown wasn't even an
honorable mention and all that tight ends. Well, now they've
(01:50:36):
done quarterbacks and wide receivers, and I'll get to the
quarterbacks coming up. But today it was announced that the
wide receivers list came out and to no one's surprise,
Jamar Chase ranked by all those coaches, executives, and scouts
(01:50:56):
as the number one wide receiver in the National Football League.
Last year when they did this ranking, Jamar came in
at number three. He's jumped two spots to number one.
Here's what ESPN writes about him. Chase separated from defenders
on the field all year and then separated from the
pack in these rankings. In year four, he earned around
(01:51:19):
seventy percent of the first place votes after producing the
fifth triple count in the Super Bowl era with ketches, yards,
and touchdowns. The others to do that Cooper Cup, Steve Smith, Senior,
Sterling Sharp, and Jerry Rice. As one NFL personnel director
put it, Jefferson is the better route runner, but Chase
(01:51:39):
is the better overall playmaker. He's the ultimate first pick
in the pickup game athlete alongside Saquon Barkley. Honestly, it
comes down to Chase is a bleep to cover. A
high ranking NFL personnel executive said, we are super aware
of him and have played him a bunch and been
torched by him a bunch. Not many NFL players scare
(01:52:05):
coaches more than Chase, who's seven hundred and eighty seven
yards after catch were one hundred and ninety more than
the next closest receiver last year. The Bengals still feel
he's refining his game with improvements in defensive scheme recognition,
attack plans based on coverages, and creative route running with
different speeds or stems. Quote. More explosion, better after the catch,
(01:52:29):
more powerful. That's where he gets his edge. An NFL
personnel evaluator said, So, it's cool to see Jamar Chase
getting some much deserved recognition by coaches, executives, and scouts
across the NFL. As the number one wide receiver coming
in behind him at number two was Justin Jefferson. No
surprise there. The Minnesota Viking wide receiver Tyreek Hill was
(01:52:52):
number three. Last year, he was ranked at number two.
Ceedee Lamb of the Dallas Cowboys came in at number four,
aj Brown of Philadelphia at number five, Aman Ross Saint
Brown of the Lions at six, Malik Neighbors of the
Giants at seven, Nicocollins of Houston at eight. Mike Evans,
still doing it with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, came in
(01:53:14):
at nine, and Garrett Wilson, fresh off of a contract
extension with the Jets, comes in at number ten. The
honorable mentions four wide receivers include Terry McLaurin, Puka Nakua,
Brian Thomas, Junior, DK Metcalf, Davante Adams, and T Higgins.
Says this about Higgins quote, I was very This is
(01:53:36):
from an NFL scouting director quote. I was very curious
to see what he would have done if he had
hit free agency and been a number one on a team.
I think he would be one hundred catch guy somewhere else.
He's really good. Only thing he doesn't have is top
end speed. That is an NFL scouting director on T Higgins.
A bunch of others got votes, including DeVante Smith, Lad McConkey,
(01:54:00):
Jackson Smith and Jigbud Jamison Williams of Detroit and others.
I don't see any Browns in this list, Drew. I mean,
I've kind of been talking up Jerry Judy. I thought
Jerry Judy was pretty impressive last year. I agreed.
Speaker 3 (01:54:13):
I was looking through it as well as you were
going through the Jamar Chase stuff and was a little
surprised not to see Jerry Judy on there. He did
crack the NFL Top one hundred lists. At least get
a vote for Jered for the first time. Yeah, And
to be honest with you, there are quite a few
wide receivers in the also receiving votes categories that I
would not take over. Jerry Judy, Malvin Ridley, Jalen Wattle,
(01:54:36):
George Pickens. Yeah, I would much rather have Jerry Judy, so,
you know, more ammunition for the kid. Maybe they want
to see it done again, you know, maybe they're thinking
it might have been a one year adoration, so maybe
they just want to see it again. But I have
a question for you, okay, of the Honorable Mentions take
away T Higgins to remove any biases you may have,
(01:54:58):
but if you had to pick one player from the
Honorable Mentions category who you think will vault into the
top ten next season?
Speaker 2 (01:55:05):
Who would you pick? I'm taking a drink of my
tea here, who would I pick among DeVante's or honorable
mention correct McLaurin, Nkua, Thomas, Metcalf, and Adams to vault
into the top ten next season. I think it would
be Brian Thomas Junior of the Jags I am in
(01:55:25):
agreement with that. The quote on him is he'll be
on the list by next year. He can do it all.
He took the league by storm last year. He's got
size and can win all areas of the field. There's
not one thing you can't do with him. He can
play outside or inside, in the slot and dominate. That's
from an AFC executive, yep. And just one other thing,
Mike Evans.
Speaker 3 (01:55:45):
If you ever want a very satisfying football reference page
to look at, just go look at Mike Evans's Football.
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):
Of Famer page. He should be Hall of Famer. Yes,
first ballot. I agree with that. Brian Thomas, this has
been one of my high takes. I don't think the
Bengals are gonna win like twelve or thirteen games this year.
I have them at ten. That's where I'm at right now,
just because I don't have faith in the offensive line.
I'm not crazy on the defense. My hottest take is
(01:56:12):
that they lose again at home Week two to the Jags.
Liam Cohen, who really did some great things with Mike
Evans and Baker Mayfield in Tampa and kind of giving
Trevor Lawrence some answers and with Brian Thomas moving him
all around. I don't know if the Bengals will be
ready for a guy like that that early on, and
(01:56:34):
so I think he could single handedly beat the Bengals
in Week two. Like that's how high I am on
Brian Thomas. All right, when we come back, we'll go
over the quarterbacks. What they said about Joe Burrow. That's
coming up next. This is since he three to sixty
ESPN fifteen thirty. Since he three to sixty ESPN fifteen
(01:56:57):
thirty on Austin Elmore. Thanks for being here. A few
minutes from now. Moe Egger stops by for Quick Hits
MO on this afternoon from three to six on ESPN
fifteen thirty, continuing the conversation about the rankings from executives, coaches,
and scouts according to ESPN, and we just talked about
(01:57:19):
how Jamar Chase was ranked the number one wide receiver
in the NFL. They also did those rankings for quarterback
and I thought it was interesting. They said that the
list is more exclusive this time around. In most years,
sixteen quarterbacks get votes significant amounts of votes. They said
that's not the case. This year. Only twelve players had
traction twelve quarterbacks, which means a top ten plus two
(01:57:43):
honorable mentions. And they said that this means four quarterbacks
on contracts of fifty million dollars or more are not
under serious consideration for the top ten. Here's how it ranks.
Number one. Patrick Mahomes. I'm a little surprised by this.
I'm a little surprised by this. Mahomes last year thirty
nine hundred yards, twenty six touchdowns, eleven interceptions looked pedestrian
(01:58:07):
at best. In the Super Bowl, Travis Kelcey was not
the same Travis kelce Their offensive line struggled, for sure,
they didn't get as much consistency out of the run
game with the injury to Pachecko. It just you could
tell when things around him were in flux. Mahomes struggled
a little bit. There were times he definitely won games
(01:58:29):
for them without a doubt, but there's also times where
it's like, can you put us on your back and
lead us to a game? It lead us to a win,
and Mahomes didn't. So I thought he would drop a
little bit, and not necessarily because of him and his
play dropping, but because of how big of a step
than next two guys took. Number two was Josh Allen.
I have no problem with this if you're gonna Josh
(01:58:52):
has taken a serious step forward. He does not turn
the ball over nearly as much as he used to.
He's gotten slightly more accurate, and his team changed the
way they do things. They've become a run first, play
action team and that makes things easier for Josh. Plus,
he doesn't have Stefan Diggs there anymore. And I think
Stefon Diggs causes problems in locker rooms, I really do,
(01:59:15):
and I think he had a negative effect on Josh Allen. Now,
Josh feels like he can operate the offense. He's become smarter,
he's taking care of the football more. His ability to
run and has athleticism and just insane arm are all
the tools that you look for in a quarterback. Number three, though,
(01:59:36):
was Joe Burrow. And listen, here's the thing. Joe, as
far as I am concerned, is the best quarterback in
the National Football League. And yes, you can say I'm biased,
and that's fine, but I feel like I've known and
understood and watched and studied the game of football for
a long time to have a pretty good understanding of it,
(01:59:56):
a pretty good understanding of the position and how it's
supposed to be played. And I certainly have learned a
ton from picking Tony's brain over the last several years.
And I look at it and say, mechanically, pre snap accuracy,
there's nobody better in the NFL than Joe Burrow. Is
he as the athletic as Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. No,
(02:00:17):
he's not, but he's still excellent inside the pocket, the
ability to move around, the ability to shake off defenders
on the run, and he is by far the most
accurate quarterback in the NFL. Listen to this stat that
they have seventy point six percent completion rate against the
backdrop of a league high six hundred and fifty two
(02:00:37):
attempts in twenty twenty four is impressive. His eleven percent
off target rate is the lowest among starting quarterbacks. There is,
without a doubt, no question Joe is the most accurate
passer in the NFL. A quote here from an AFC scout.
If we're talking about playing the quarterback position, nobody is
(02:00:58):
playing it better than him. Footwork, ball placement, the mental
game at the line of scrimmage, feel for pocket eye level,
finding the crease to step up and throw. He is
the best right now, and he's more mobile than he
gets credit for. This. Other AFC executive said quote, I
get the guy has two elite wideouts, but their run
game was average and the offensive line was not very
(02:01:20):
good either. On top of all that, their defense was porous,
and he kept them in every single game for the
most part. I thought it may have been his best year,
but it didn't get the same pub because of the
other high profile teams. I think Joe's the best quarterback
in the NFL. I think Josh is just right there
behind him. I got Lamar at number three, and I
(02:01:42):
would put Mahomes at number four. And the thing is
that the varying degrees of separation between those four quarterbacks
they're minuscule, like they're tiny. You could make that list
that top four in any way the way they did it,
the way I just did it. You could make your
own in any order, and I would have no problem
with it, because that's how close together all four of
(02:02:03):
those guys are. And you know, for my money, Joe's
the best. He's the number one, just because of the
fact that the defense stunk. The run game was not existent.
It was basically all on him, and the offensive line
was not any good either, and he still put up
those type of numbers like, yeah, it's good to have
the receivers, but still I thought that was impressive. Lamar
(02:02:25):
number four on that list. Jayden Daniels is number five,
Matt Stafford number six, Herbert was seventh. Jared Goff the
Lions eighth. By the way, congratulations Jared Goff and his
wife Kristen just had a daughter. Jalen Hurts comes in
at number nine, Baker Mayfield at number ten. The two
honorable mentions were C. J. Stroud and Jordan Love. We'll
(02:02:46):
go from a quarterback ranking to our quarterback at least
because Tony's not here and he's on vacation. Our leader,
our guy, mell Wegger. Next for Quick Hits on ESPN
fifteen thirty from the Clements Heating and Air Temstar.
Speaker 1 (02:03:01):
Weather ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station. It's time for
since e three sixty Quick Hits on ESPN fifteen yester eight.
Speaker 2 (02:03:11):
It is welcome into Quick Hits on ESPN fifteen thirty,
joined now by Moegger. Mo will be on this afternoon
from three to six for the mo Egger Show. And uh, hi,
mo how are you? Uh? Oh oh, there we go
there it is hi.
Speaker 26 (02:03:25):
I like it when you're in here, Yes, because the
scent of cleaning products fills the room.
Speaker 2 (02:03:32):
Yes, you keep a very clean studio. I do not.
I do in general, Tony does not. And I have
been feeling under the weather, so I wanted to be
doubled down and make sure I'm not spreading germs. I understand,
but normally when I'm in this studio it's pretty clean.
When I came in here on Monday, Yeah, it was
like a brand new room. Uh huh, thank you, Yeah,
no problem. I do it with all of them because
nobody apparently picks up after themselves. Uh working here? Uh,
(02:03:57):
what do you have coming? It's my red BULLCN from
two days ago. I move that. You also have another
cup here full of water? Yeah. How many times have
you gotten to your desk in the morning and there
has been a cup of water half drink put on
your desk because I do that a.
Speaker 26 (02:04:11):
Lot multiple times. Yeah, and I deserve take it to
your desk what I do with my daughter, Yeah, I
deserve that.
Speaker 2 (02:04:17):
What's on your show?
Speaker 26 (02:04:18):
Bengals. Fans got it right, voters got it right. Lap
and Lamar both go in. Now, let's make this easy.
For twenty twenty six, we will discuss Aaron Layton's going
to join us just Baseball dot Com to talk about
the Reds draft class. Danny hickbout them from AppleTV has
FC Cincinnati versus Miami tonight. No, we don't need to
(02:04:38):
end regular season games with the swing off, but the
swing off was cool last night. The All Star Game
was cool last night. We'll get to that, your colleague,
I was gonna do this yesterday. Your guy Jason Williams
says the Reds are boring my guy is not something
I would say. Just so we're clear, I didn't get
a chance to talk about this yesterday, but I will
(02:04:59):
h I'm gonna talk more about Shamar Stewart man.
Speaker 2 (02:05:03):
I said yesterday, even if it's not true. I just
want to run with this story just because sure, like,
how exciting would it be if this dude's putting on
a Texas A and m Helvett hilarious? It would be
the best.
Speaker 26 (02:05:21):
I I don't understand the people who want him to
dig in. Yeah, because like I've seen his side of
this the entire time, but sometimes you have to admit
you win. And I said yesterday like, I want Shamar
Stewart to play for the Bengals because I don't think
it helps them to not have their first round pick.
(02:05:43):
I think he should come to training camp as quickly
as possible because I think if he does that, he
has the best possible chance to help the team come September.
Even if you think his position is right, why do
you want him to dig in on this? And I
was surprised yesterday because my take was like, look, you
stood your ground, you had your principle. The Bengals aren't
(02:06:04):
gonna budge. Don't you just want to start your NFL career?
And if the answer is no, I then wonder do
you really want to play in Cincinnati. I was taken
aback by the pushback from people who are like, uh huh,
plant your flag, Shamar?
Speaker 2 (02:06:17):
What good does that do anybody? So I need help
with that. Do you kind of think he reached the
point of no return at that mini camp practice where
he aired out the organization, because like, to me, I
don't know how much more dug in you could be. Yeah,
you say that and then you don't come the next day.
I'm led to believe, and he could prove me wrong.
I'm led to believe that he really doesn't want to
(02:06:38):
be a Cincinnati Bengal. I have no other conclusion to draw, right.
I think, if you have a burning desire to play
in Cincinnati, you might not like signing under the terms
that the Bengals are asking you.
Speaker 26 (02:06:51):
To sign under, but you do it anyway, right, And
so I don't know. I mean, if if let's say
he signed his contract today and said, look, some catching
up to do, but I'm going to be here for
all the training camp. Let's start with a clean slate, like,
I don't know at that point that it's the point
of no return. The Bengals have had players that they
have dug in against that they've ended up having a
good long term relationship with. I just legitimately wonder, does
(02:07:15):
this guy just not want to be a Bengal? Maybe
maybe he does, Until I see otherwise, I'm gonna question
whether or.
Speaker 2 (02:07:21):
Not he does. Why can't we put the automated ball
strike system in Major League Baseball starting Friday and going
for the rest of time.
Speaker 26 (02:07:28):
I have no idea I put this on social media
last night. I am typically like anti replay because it's intrusive.
All the stoppages in college basketball, all the stoppages in
NFL games. That ABS system is as unintrusive as anything
you'll have.
Speaker 2 (02:07:45):
It's just like tennis. Team takes no time.
Speaker 26 (02:07:47):
Yeah, like it and if there's a limit to how
it can be done, and it's executed the way it is,
Like it was used in spring training and no one complained.
It was used last night, and I think even folks
who are kind of anti replay looked at it and said, okay, right,
that's not getting in the way. So I don't see
why I can't be used on Friday.
Speaker 2 (02:08:08):
What did you think of the swing off? I thought
it was fun. It was cool. I thought it was fun.
Speaker 26 (02:08:14):
You know, people who are criticizing Boone and Roberts for
not using Otani and Judge, I don't think they'd realize
until after the fact those guys were long gone.
Speaker 2 (02:08:22):
I criticized them for not being there. That's fair. Yeah, Like,
that's totally fair. And here's the thing. Like with Judge,
for example, if he hits a two run homer in
the first inning, he would have to stick around because
he might be the MVP. Yeah. Also, the Yankees play
the Braves in Atlanta Friday, So like, I get it.
He's going to Cobb County Airport, getting on a private
jet and going somewhere for the next two days. Yeah,
(02:08:42):
I get that. Yeah. But also, dude, yeah, and it's
your manager. Yeah, stick around, stick around, stick around Otani.
Maybe it's a little different you're flying back across the country.
What maybe it's different.
Speaker 26 (02:08:53):
I mean he's not exactly sitting in the middle seat
in row thirty one. Still, you know, I mean, like
show hey, like stick around. Yeah. I don't know how
you enforced that rule. But I thought, like the actual
swing off itself was fun. I thought the game itself
was really well presented. I thought the hank Aaron.
Speaker 2 (02:09:10):
I was gonna say, what was your favorite part of
all from the ball strike to the swing off, to
the miked up to the hank Aaron, Did you have
one that you're like that was.
Speaker 26 (02:09:18):
I usually am a big fan of the micd up.
I don't think they got a lot of mileage out
of that, which I don't think is Fox's fault.
Speaker 2 (02:09:24):
I just Kershaw is the only one that was good
because he had a personality because he had a personality
and he was pitching Scuba and Raleigh. They were like
they were competing. Yeah, which is like if for people
to say, do it in the regular season, that's what
it's gonna sound like. In the regular season. Guys are
too compete.
Speaker 26 (02:09:37):
You have to get the right guy like Joey Vado
did it once a couple of times. Actually, it was
really good and most guys aren't gonna be like that.
I thought the Hank Aaron presentation was.
Speaker 2 (02:09:46):
Really well done. That to me was the highlight. Yeah,
that was really really cool. Are you going to TQL
Stadium tonight to watch Messi? Unfortunately I will not be there.
Have you ever seen Messi before?
Speaker 26 (02:09:56):
I saw f C Cincinnati play Miami last year MESSI
didn't play. C Cincinnati won six y one, and the
next day I said f C Cincinnati's the greatest soccer
team in the world. Okay, yeah, I mean inaccurate. Inaccurate,
they're not. They were not the greatest.
Speaker 2 (02:10:11):
They were at the time they were awesome, and then
they at the time you said it that true fell apart.
At the end of the year. I wish I was
going to night.
Speaker 26 (02:10:17):
I went to the US Open Cup semi final two
years ago, which was a lot of fun. Is even
admittedly not like a hardcore soccer guy watching a player
of that caliber in person.
Speaker 2 (02:10:30):
If I could be there tonight, I would that'd be fun.
What else do we have here? I had a list
of everything cleaned up a little too early while I
was cleaning up the actual thing. But now I'm blanking
on what I was going to ask you, Well, just
think of something you've always wanted to ask me. Yeah,
there's many things. I was actually I had the TV
on in here and Albert Breer was doing an interview
(02:10:51):
and he has this thing behind him that says, you'll
think of something, oh and I need that, uh, and
it just like it tell quick story about the late
great Jim Scott. Yes, so one of my great producing gets. Ever,
and don't get mad at me if you're big into
(02:11:14):
politics and you didn't like this guy. I booked an
interview that Jim Scott did with former President Jimmy Carter, right,
And I don't remember why, but there was something going
on and I got Jimmy Carter on the show. So
they're like, they're like, look, you know Jim's interview that show,
the interviews are quick four or five minutes. We did
(02:11:36):
like a two parter, so it's like eight minute interview
with Jimmy Carter. This is one of the former presidents
of the United States. At the end of the interview
with like a minute ago, Jim Scott, God rest his soul,
says anything else, and I literally wrote it on the
wall in the studio, anything else, Jim Scott to Jimmy Carter,
and then Jimmy Carter like I think talked about Habitat
(02:11:58):
for Humanity, one of my all time favorite moment questions,
and like so we got to the break and Jim's
like kind of blew it. At the end of night.
Speaker 26 (02:12:05):
I'm like, you had a former president and you couldn't
come up with anything. Jim, to his own credit, came
back after the break and he's like, yep, if you
have a former president on and you're so ill prepared
the U nd the interview with anything else.
Speaker 2 (02:12:19):
Well, I was going to ask you about the Open
Championship coming up tomorrow, but we can save that for tomorrow.
We can even though it'll already be underway. But you say,
there's something that you say a lot that I've picked
up on Oh boy, and it's so what else? And
I'm wondering, is that a derivative of anything else? Do
you think? Uh?
Speaker 26 (02:12:39):
No, I actually got that from my wife, Like if
when I come home at night, right and we'll like
talk about our days, then she'll eventually say to me
someone else. And the reason is is because sometimes like
I'm not ready to like talk about it, talk about it. Yeah,
So it's like her way of getting more out of me.
So I think that that's I think I got it
(02:13:01):
from her.
Speaker 2 (02:13:01):
Okay, well, you've passed it on. So what else? My
friends say that now because I say it so much. Yeah,
So I mean you're her legacy is certainly it's a
trickle down Yeah, it really is, like trickle down economics.
Did jim ever anybody anybody interview anybody about that? He says,
I'm sure, Yeah, sure he did. Okay, So anything else,
Jimmy Carter, We'll see if anything else is going to
(02:13:22):
happen over the next three hours. This has been since
he three sixty. Thanks to Drew wester Heidie for producing
on the Home of the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty
