Speaker 1 (00:00):
Since he three to sixty about Cincinnati from Cincinnati, sponsored
in part by Skyline Chile. Stop by Skyline Chile for
a three way or cheez Cony today. Feeling good, It's
Skyline time. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hi, Hello, welcome in since e three sixty on ESPN
fifteen thirty. My name's Austin Elmore. Thank you for being
here and starting your afternoon with me. No Tony today.
Tony will not return until the twenty third. Is he
and Moe will be live at Bengals training camp at
(00:37):
the practice fields adjacent to pay Course Stadium. Looking forward
to hearing that, But that will be Tony's triumphant return.
That show's going to go from ten to noon. I
believe I don't know what's going to happen with Tony
after that. Nobody has told me still, so I'm assuming
he'll be here. I don't know though, but either way,
(00:57):
looking forward to having the big fellow back. Saw that
he is enjoying the beach and I would imagine he's
probably back at the Dakrey Deck today. If I know
anything about Big Tone, He's probably back at the Dakary
Deck today. But We look forward to having him back
after his vacation next week. Got a good show planned
(01:18):
for you today. At one o'clock, we'll talk to Jeff Hobson,
the senior writer for Bengals dot Com. Been doing it
a long time, seen just about everything you can imagine
when it comes to the Cincinnati Bengals. We'll talk to
him about Dave Lapham and leaping Lamar Parish going into
the Bengals Ring of Honor. Also ask him about the
twenty twenty five Bengals. And Jeff also has a cause
(01:38):
near and dear to his heart that he wants to
talk about and spread the word about that I look
forward to informing our audience about. Then at two o'clock,
old friend of the show, Sam Monson, formerly with Pro
Football Focus, now with a thirty third team and the
Check the Mic podcast part of that with Steve Palozolo.
Sam's gonna stop by and he had a take on
(01:58):
Trey Hendrickson. I want to talk and the Bengals as
they go into training camp now less than a week away.
So looking forward to those two guests. We'll also talk
to Moeger at the end of the show. Mo Eger,
who last night hosted a Q and A with Joe Burrow.
Moe got to spend time with the Bengals quarterback. We'll
ask him a little bit about that and see what
(02:18):
he's got coming up on his show this afternoon plus
at one twenty today Talkbacks Now. Talkbacks are brought brought
to you by our good friend Sincy Shirts, and each
week we give away a Sincy Shirts gift card for
the best talkback, the talkback of the week. Well, let
me just be honest with you here. So far this
(02:40):
week we haven't seen any talkbacks or heard any talkbacks
in my mind worthy of Talkback of the week, so
we don't have a winner as of right now. You
could win a Sinsi Shirts gift card get yourself a
free T shirt if you leave Talkback of the week.
The competition is wide open. That's at one to twe
this afternoon. Coming up in just a little bit, you'll
(03:03):
hear from Pat Noonan, Yes, the victorious Pat Noonan. As
last night it was B two A bonus points if
you know what that means. FC Cincinnati over Intero Miami.
Messi held scoreless as the Orange and Blue beat him
three to nothing at TQL Stadium. I believe the combined
score of the last two games is nine to one
(03:24):
in favor of f C Cincinnati, which is just ridiculous.
For whatever reason, Pat Noonon's group is dominant against FC
Cincinnata or against Inter Miami and Messi, and it was
a fun night at TQL Stadium. You'll hear the call
of Tommy g with the goal, and also you'll hear
from the gaffer, Pat Noonan coming up in the next
(03:48):
segment as well. I'm joined again today by my producer extraordinaire,
part of the Sydney Battery, both of us from Sydney, Ohio.
My guy Drew Wester Heidi with us today. Hi Drew,
Hello Austin. Let's going on? What's going through your mind
right now?
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Just a lot of early morning this morning for me,
I was I was up before the sun was up
to watch some golf.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
That's right. We're going to have an Open Championship update
throughout the show, I think one in every hour. And
you've you've been I've told you prepared music for this.
Is that correct? That is correct? We've got a little
music bed. Can we hear it? We can? I would
like to know what it sounds like Oh, okay, so
this is when we'll go to Drew Wester Heidi where
(04:29):
with an Open Championship update. And this is like the
official theme music of the Open correct used by Sky
Sports and formerly ESPN. Okay, fantastic, all right, so we'll
get to that in just a little bit. Drew, you've
You've done a great job with all the stuff I've
asked you to do today, and I do appreciate it.
But I have one more task for you. All right.
(04:49):
This is something that I, uh normally do and I
Tony often delegates to me to do. I need a
poll question for today. Okay, all right, I'm gonna put this.
We're gonna try to get this between now and the
end of the first segment or start of the second segment,
A since E three to sixty pole question presented by
Revivefitnessystems dot Com and coach PJ. Street. I, I, you know,
(05:11):
let you know, maybe get the brain spin in the wheels,
turn it a little bit, come up with a pole
question for today, all right, and uh, I'm gonna put
that on your plate. All right. What else do we have?
There's really not that much going on in the world
of sports as we review all of yesterday's top sports stories,
brought to you by Klaus Roofing of Cincinnati krssincy dot com.
(05:34):
Von Miller, the great defensive end slash linebacker former Super
Bowl MVP, is expected to sign with the Washington Commanders
on a one year deal. As von Miller continues to
what I think is ring Chase a little bit. He's
been with Buffalo now going over to Washington. It'd be
interesting to see how von Miller works out. Joe Burrow
(05:58):
Joe Burrow is on the cover of Sports Illustrated for
the month of August. It is the Sports and Style issue.
Burrow on the cover in a Alo suit, Alo being
Alo the brand. It's like a maroon suit and he's
what appears to be in some sort of an ice
bath where he's soaking wet. You know. It's one of
those pictures where the ladies go a little bit crazy
(06:19):
for Joey b So it's cool to see Joe on
the cover. Now here's a predicament that I'm in, all right.
One of my things, one of the things I do
is I collect Sports Illustrated covers of Cincinnati athletes. You
may have seen some of my videos in the past.
I have behind me the SI cover of Ikey Woods
(06:41):
when the Bengals went to the Super Bowl from January
of eighty nine. I have October of two thousand and
seven when Ocho Cinco had the blonde mohawk and the
striped painted arms. I have from the sixties when the
Bengals were invented, when Paul Brown was on the cover
with the Bengals helmet for the first time. I have
Chris Collinsworth from the eighties when he was, you know,
(07:04):
taking the league by storm in his rookie season. I
have all those SI covers of Cincinnati sports athletes and
primarily Bengals people. Now. I don't have the Joe Burrow
one yet, but that one is that Is that an
SI cover I should buy because that one is not
really sports related. It almost is like a thirst trap
(07:27):
more than it's about sports. It's not as much of
an action shot. I don't know. I'm conflicted about this.
Five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. That is
the phone number if you want to call in and
be a part of the show today. You can also
tweeted me at audio or a U T Y E
L M O R E Drew. Did you watch The
(07:48):
SP's last night? Not a second? Not a second of
the s not a second. I didn't plan on it,
but when I got home and everything a making dinner,
my roommate throws the SP's on and I'm like, oh,
Shane Gillis, I'll watch what Shane Gillis has to say.
He's he's all right. Are you a Shane Gillis fan?
I am?
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Okay, did you watch his monologue? I didn't watch the
full monologue. I saw some clips on Twitter that were very,
very funny.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Okay, So I'll be honest. I'm not a huge Shane
Gillis guy. Like I think he's funny, but I don't
think like when I think of a comedian that I love,
I'm not dazzling up. Gillis doesn't jump to the top
of the list for you. Have you seen the show Tires?
Speaker 3 (08:29):
I have seen clips in like some episodes, but it's
not something I've watched all.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
The way through. I don't think that show is funny, okay,
Like it's like trying to be The Office, except it's
to the tire shop, okay, and they've already done the
Office and it's been perfected tires is just it's just
trying to do the same thing. I'm just not a
huge fan of it, not huge fan of that style
of comedy. But I've been called every name in the
(08:54):
book because I said that Shane Gillis bombed last night. Listen,
he bombed to the audience in the room, that's what
bombing is, right, Like they were not filling it all
those athletes and celebrities and movie stars and whatnot, Like
they weren't laughing at him very much at all. So
(09:15):
in the room he's bombing. On television and in living
rooms across the country, he's probably killing it with a
lot of people. And I laughed at some of the stuff.
I thought it was cool. He did a tribute to
Norm MacDonald with his joke at the end about the
oj and Heisman trophy. That's funny. But overall I kind
of got uncomfortable because of the fact that nobody was
(09:36):
laughing at him inside the theater wherever they were at.
So people have been mean to me. They've been calling
me all sorts of names because I thought Shane Gillis
wasn't a that funny and be kind of bombed and
it was just uncomfortable to watch. Yeah, it's interesting.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
And like I said, I didn't see I only saw
just the clips of the jokes he was telling. I
didn't see any of the reactions of the athletes and
the people in the room. So and that's kind of
that's quite interesting, Like what would you rather do? Would
you rather like bomb with the people in there? But
if it's going over a huge TV audience, would you
rather the people in the living rooms laugh or the
(10:15):
people in the room laugh?
Speaker 2 (10:16):
I think you want the people in the living room
to laugh because that's more people. Yep. You know, he
casts a wider net. And if you're getting a lot
of positive reaction on social media and clicks and all that,
then that maybe ultimately is all that Shane cares about
for his particular brand. I was a little surprised that
some of those jokes got through, got through the keeper
(10:39):
really that Disney allowed them to tell. But kudos to
them for that for you know, you know, not being
as buttoned up and letting them say some of the
stuff that he said. So, uh, I don't know. The
older I get, the more I understood, like secondhand embarrassment
is a thing for me, Like.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
And yet The Office is like your favorite TV show
as well?
Speaker 2 (11:01):
It's wow. I don't know if it's my favorite it
used to be, but that's what I'm saying. Like the
older I get now, I can't stand that. Yeah, Like
if I were to watch the Scott's Tots episode right now,
I would have to turn it off. Yeah, I can't
do that. Like there are videos too of like people
and moments where it's like I get secondhand embarragement. I
(11:23):
cringe so much that I just can't. I have to
turn it off, right, And I don't know how to
explain that. Speaking of cringe, did you see and listen, guys,
this is just we're just bs in. In the first
segment here, did you see the most viral video of
the day yesterday?
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Happened late last night at a cold Play concert. Yes,
I did see this video. I don't know any of
the context behind it, but I saw the video.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yeah. So there's a man and a woman they're embracing.
The woman is standing in front of the man. The
man has his arms around her waist and she has
her arms on his arms, and they are enjoying deeply.
A cold Play concert I believe in Boston. And then
(12:10):
the video board cuts to them caught red handed in
four K, Caught red handed in four K. These people
are not married to each other. They work together and
as a matter of fact, the man is the CEO
of a big company and the woman is the HR
leader HR lady for this company. I think they went
(12:32):
into work today. They immediately separated. The woman hands over face,
turned around back to camera. The man ducks down below,
out of sight, and meanwhile, Chris Martin from Coldplay is like,
I don't know, what if there's like a break in
the action where they just like are messing with the
fans and stuff. But like he's commentating on this, like
(12:56):
he's doing play by play of like the crowd Shop.
That was so uncomfortable, But like that's something I've watched
a thousand times because I think it's so funny. Yeah,
just the immediate reaction of people.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
So I did see that video, I didn't know the context.
I did not realize that it was a CEO. And
you think they went to work today.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
You know, that's a good question. I would assume they did,
unless you're working from home. That's a tough Thursday, man,
That is tough. I mean, I can't imagine. I mean,
the world doesn't stop spinning because of your extra marital affairs.
I just can't imagine. Like the water cooler talk at
(13:38):
that company today has got to be in unbelieva. I
just I have so much envy. H I love the
gossip a little bit. How about you? Are you a
hot goss guy?
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Not particularly. I'll listen. I'll listen.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
I'm not a I'm not a messenger when it comes
to that sort of stuff, but I will listen.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah, that's what I mean. Like, I just I love
to listen and ask questions. Right, hot goss what they
call it these days? This has been a steaming hot something.
First segment of Sincy three to six year coming up
later on. This is like back in the day, we
used to do a segment called Box of Chocolates where
we would just talk about a little bit of everything
and anything and random stuff going on around the world.
(14:16):
Maybe we'll bring that back tomorrow. It's like a Friday treat.
I don't know, maybe we just did it. One of
the other things I want to talk about kind of
in the sports media landscape is there's this idea that
this I guess reports surfacing that Fox is, who just
like wiped out their entire morning TV slate, is going
(14:38):
to reach a deal with Barstool Sports to uh oh,
that deal has come to an agreement, Dave Portnoy, tweeting
ten minutes ago. Oh, Barstool Sports is proud to announce
a new wide ranging partnership with Fox Sports, the first
time in our illustrious and notorious history that we've got
(14:59):
a TV partner we believe in and believes in us.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
I can't wait to see what we create together. From
the desk of Stool Presidente, Dave.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Portmout Oh, my goodness, all right, so that is official.
I did not see that until just now. Thank you
for that. So Barstool and Fox working together, they're gonna
have like live content leading into Big Noon Kickoff, and
then Dave is apparently going to be part of Big
Noon Kickoff. I want to talk about this a little
bit later on because I'm fascinated by that potential dynamic. Also,
(15:31):
speaking of Fox, Fox Sports released an all time Reds lineup,
the all time starting nine plus a starting pitcher or
the starting nine DH, a starting pitcher, reliever, and a
manager for the Cincinnati Reds, including some honorable mentions. I
want to get your take on that and who may
(15:52):
or may not have been omitted from such lineup for
the Reds. That's all a part of the show coming
up as well. All right, that's a exciting first segment.
When we get back, you'll hear from Pat Noon and
what he had to say after a big win for
FC Cincinnati. We'll do an open Championship update. We'll get
to that Reds all time lineup, and hopefully by then
(16:13):
Drew has a poll question ready for us. Five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty is the phone number. I think
you can probably figure out one of those days. Call in,
we'll talk about whatever you want to talk about. This
is Sincy three to sixty hour one, brought to you
by Skyline Chile on the Home of the Bengals ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
Now you're just they's it all.
Speaker 6 (16:34):
Lavander Avander into the box, left foot it shot two
now a Vander mode activated Sixcinnati doubles their advantage.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
That was a call last night. FC Cincinnati three nil
winners over enter Miami at TQL Stadium. They're describing last
night's victory as Miami being outclassed outclassed by FC Cincinnati,
and FC Cincinnati's defense stepped up and stopped a record
(17:10):
streak that Lionel Messi entered the match with. Messi had
scored two goals in a game five games in a row.
It was an MLS record streak of scoring two goals
or more in a game five games in a row,
but that came to an end last night with f
C Cincinnati's three to nothing win over Miami. Goals were
(17:31):
scored by Girardo Vevenzuela in the sixteenth and then a
Vander had a brace with goals in the fiftieth and
seventieth minutes to give Cincinnati the lead. Vander was doing
some cleanup work right now. FC Cincinnati forty five points.
That is good for second in Major League Soccer, second
in the Supporter Shield standings. They are one point back
(17:54):
of Philadelphia. They are one point clear of Nashville. It
is Philly, Cincinnati, Nashville in the top three of the
Supporters Shield standings as we go into the second half
of the month of July. This of course, was a
big comeback win, a big bounce back win, I should
say for FC Cincinnati, considering the fact that they went
(18:17):
up to nil over Columbus over the weekend and gave
up four straight to lose to their arch rivals. Here
is the gaffer, the manager, the skipper. Here's Pat Noonan
following a three to nothing win over Miami last night.
Speaker 7 (18:32):
Very pleased with the performance. We were a better team
tonight than we showed on the weekend, and I'm happy
for the guys that they were rewarded for being the
question of storry.
Speaker 8 (18:46):
What was it like just having that three goal lead
and being able to see that out when maybe you
haven't been able to do that in the past.
Speaker 7 (18:58):
We played the game in a better way with the lead,
and you know, was was it perfect?
Speaker 4 (19:03):
No?
Speaker 7 (19:04):
There were there were tough moments when when we had
to defend and we had to defend good movement, good
you know, one v one ability on the ball, and
I thought our guys were up for it and made
a lot of big plays in the right moments and.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Scored some good goals.
Speaker 7 (19:22):
It's it's not easy to beat a team of that
quality with the form that they're in, and to score
three and get a shout out.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
I'm very pleased about that.
Speaker 8 (19:32):
Seemed like the team defense was just really strong. You
could see the communication and guys shifting and kind of
directing each other. Was that I mean, I'm guessing that
was part of the game plan, but how much of
that was just player led, you know, wanting to make
sure that the team was back to playing like a team.
Speaker 7 (19:49):
Every game should entail communication and working together.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
It doesn't matter who you're playing. When you're playing, and when.
Speaker 7 (19:55):
You do it at a good level, you position yourself
to get results.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
And we did that tonight.
Speaker 7 (19:59):
So I don't think there's been a lack of communication
in other games. Maybe what we're saying, how we're saying
in the right moment, that's the difference.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
And so I don't look.
Speaker 7 (20:12):
Just at the result and say, Okay, these guys all
of a sudden communicated in a better way, and it
hasn't been the case. We communicated the right things because
you could see the movements, the spacing to try to
limit their attack was strong. Again, it wasn't perfect. There
were moments where they put us under pressure, and then
in those moments we defended the box the right way.
So I think the energy was there and you could
(20:33):
see the guys wanted to respond in a good way,
and they did start with Carter.
Speaker 9 (20:39):
Pat congratulations on the result. It seemed like, I mean
from the very beginning you mentioned that they had opportunities
and it's a quality team on the other side of you.
But from throughout the entire game you were able to
kind of take the game away from them with your
possession and the way you were structured to respond whenever
there was going the other way. How were you able
to accomplish that and what did you like about that
part of the game.
Speaker 7 (21:00):
I think how we moved the ball at times to
get certain players on the ball, to allow certain movements.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Off the ball was.
Speaker 7 (21:11):
We did that a good way, and when we could
find space, I think we could have been even more
urgent in some moments. But I liked the way when
we found central you know, areas to to get you know,
a Vander on the Baaldata on the ball, Pavel advancing
Kai with his back to goal. We supported it a
good way and we were able to run to goal
(21:32):
with a lot of space and make h make them
uncomfortable at times. So I think you could see also
there was fatigue in some legs, so you have you
had to be sure of the moments that you want
to wanted to attack with numbers, attack with speed because
they can hit you quick in transition. But I think
the guys behind the ball, the bat, like we said,
(21:52):
the communication, how we moved together allowed us to to
then have a presence higher up the field at times,
and when that was broken, we defended.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
The in the right way. Good stuff from Pat noonon.
I love that guy. He's so direct, he's honest. He's
not afraid to kind of pull the curtain back a
little bit and explain to you what he's thinking or
what his players did or didn't do, and what they
have to be better at. Like there's coach speak, but
there's also honesty in a direct way of going about
(22:22):
it that I think Pat Noon is really good at
and can help you understand the game, which I thought
you got a little bit of that through that conversation
right there. FC Cincinnati. Next up on the schedule for
them will be, as I wait for it to refresh here,
Real Salt Lake that is coming up this weekend. It's
a nine to thirty pm kickoff as FC Cincinnati hits
(22:46):
the road to take on Real Salt Lake. They're not
great this year. They are eight four and ten with
just twenty eight points, but they've been playing a lot
better as of late. They've actually won three straight matches.
They beat Saint Louis, Houston and Portland in their last
three matches. Actually, they've won four of their last five.
(23:06):
They had a draw with Kansas City in there as
well and beat DC United, So they are coming into
this match in good form. Are real Salt Lake. We
do have a Revivefitnessystems dot com poll question that has
been posted on x or Twitter if you call it
that at Audio Moore at ESPN fifteen thirty at drew
(23:29):
by w Today, and it's kind of goes along with
the Trey Hendrickson question and what's going on with him
and what we're going to talk to Sam Monson from
the thirty third team about, which is just how serious
is Trey about potentially sitting out this season? You know,
we've talked a lot in the last couple of days
(23:51):
about Shamar Stewart and that kind of like nuclear option
for him to either try to go back to college,
which would be crazy, or to sit out the entire
year and re enter the draft, which would cost him
a lot of money, or to figure out a way
to come to an agreement with the Bengals, and just
how serious is he and his team about not playing?
(24:13):
And I think we kind of forget that that maybe
Trey Hendrickson could be even more serious about not playing.
So the Revivefitnessystems dot com poll question is win will
Trey Hendrickson first play for the Bengals this season? Is
it week one, after week four, after week eight, or
(24:33):
he won't. Now keep in mind, I think the deadline
is week ten, week eleven. If he doesn't play by then,
or doesn't show up or whatever it is, then his
contract will toll to next season, which would mean we
start this whole process all over again. Right now. Seventy
percent say he'll play in week one. Sixteen percent, however,
(24:57):
say he won't play for the Bengals this season, ten
percent say after week four, and so far nobody says
after week eight. You can go vote at audio more
at ESPN fifteen thirty at Drew b w as well
phone lines open five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty.
When we get back, we'll play for you that clip
(25:17):
with Sam Monson and with Arimirov from the thirty third
team and talk a little bit more about what exactly
that would look like if Trey Hendrickson were to not
show up. That's next. This is SINCY three sixty hour one,
brought to you by Skyline Chile on the home of
the Bengals Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty a Alexa, what's going
on in the NFL?
Speaker 10 (25:38):
Getting ESPN fifteen thirty from iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Sincy three sixty rolling right along half an hour from
right now Jeff Hoopson Bengals dot Com on the Ring
of Honor, a little bit about the twenty five team
and a few other things to discuss as well in Austin, Elmore.
Since he three sixty, let's talk about Trey Hendrickson. There
are little rumors out there percolating that, you know, the
Bengals and Trey maybe making a little bit of progress,
(26:16):
maybe having conversations. I know he's been training with Sam
Hubbard in Cincinnati. Maybe just maybe the Bengals are getting
closer to getting a deal done with their edge rusher.
But if they're not, how serious is Trey about not
playing on his current contract. This was a discussion on
the thirty third Teams podcast between Sam monson Who's gonna
(26:38):
be our guest? At two o'clock and Ari Meirov, who
is their top NFL insider, take a listen to first
what Sam has to say, and then what Ari has
to say about Hendrickson and just how serious he might
be about not playing this season.
Speaker 11 (26:51):
The point I would make though, is, you know, he
said like he's not playing in this deal. Players kind
of say that kind of stuff all the time because
that's what you have to do with an agitation. But
Hendrickson feels like a.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Guy who would honor that.
Speaker 11 (27:04):
Like I think a lot of players say that and
they don't mean it, and eventually they'll gave and they'll
play anyway. I feel like Hendrickson if they don't do
you know, if they tried to do what I said
earlier and just said you're under contract for a year,
play on it and deal with it for somebody else
next year, he wouldn't show up, but he would just
not He just wouldn't play football.
Speaker 12 (27:24):
I've gotten that impression as well. I agree with you.
Players say that all the time, but I feel like
this is a different situation. I mean, I've heard from
all angles of this story, and if you know Trean
Henderson the person I think he is somebody. When he
says something, he's serious, and he's been saying it privately
and publicly that he's not playing this year on that
(27:46):
current contract. Maybe eventually he'll give in on just changing
the one year of his deal and getting more money
this year and adding maybe a no tag clause guaranteed
for age and maybe something in that happens as a compromise.
But sixty million dollars this year the way the contract
was set up right now, we still think at franchise
tag next year. I have the feeling insign me from
hearing from all the sides of here. He's being serious
(28:08):
and he will not step on the field of that contract.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
That's all Ry meirov thirty Third Team in their NFL podcast.
We'll talk to saam Monson about it. Coming up in
just a little bit. An update to revivefitnessystems dot com
poll question. Sixty seven percent say Trey will play week one.
Seventeen percent percent say he will not play for the
Bengals this season. Let's see what Ian has to say.
Ian is in Cincinnati. Ian, what's up, hey man?
Speaker 13 (28:37):
This is this is what I think we all saw.
How Trey showed up early. That should be a signal
for you right there, and everyone talks about the feeling
of his personality and whatnot. Now I'm gonna loop in
Shamar Stewart. I know it's a different scenario, but I
think given the scenario and the big zoom out, you
(29:04):
have this sweet, sweet pocket of generational talent quarterback time.
Speaker 14 (29:11):
To me, that is precious.
Speaker 13 (29:13):
You don't know if he's gonna break his leg this
year or something of that nature, another year off the books,
and I just think with that time and trying to
get this done and every year is like critical. You
just paid team Jamar. You're that close to like giving
(29:34):
yourself a good enough chance that we eaten the pot,
the front end of the money to convince Stuart to drop.
Maybe he hates it, but if you sweet the pot right,
get it across line. If it's that important that you
have to set this precedent, you have to pay a
price and like reset the president and then years moving forward.
(29:59):
That that's my opinion because in this scenario, I don't know,
do you want to hope and pray that Miles Murphy
and Osai can get us to seventeenth in the league.
It's possible, but hey, man, you're kicking a huge risk,
and another year with Joe Burrow happened to do what
(30:20):
he did last year.
Speaker 15 (30:21):
I just think that's terrible.
Speaker 16 (30:23):
Man.
Speaker 13 (30:23):
You gotta look zoom out and look at the big
picture and what's more important. That's all I got.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
I mean, here, yeah, Ian, thank you, I agree with you.
I mean, that's the thing. Eventually, push comes to shove,
and we talked about it with Joe Danaman the other day,
to a deadline spur action. You know, we've seen now
a couple of second round picks get their deals done.
By the way, the Bengals still haven't signed theirs. But
I think, you know, with Schamar specifically, you know, Kelsey
Conway reported that the Bengals have already made concessions on
(30:52):
two big things that Shamar woned, and now they're asking
basically Shama's team to say, Okay, we've given in on
these two things. You need to play ball with us
on this default language. And they're not going to do it.
But he's right in the sense. Ian is right in
the sense that they could shift some of that money
(31:13):
up front, a higher percentage of the signing bonus payouts
more frequently or earlier, or whatever it might be as
opposed to the eighteenth eighteen month structure that we typically
see with contracts or with signing bonuses being paid out.
But it's like the Bengals are trying to set a
precedent without setting multiple precedents, which is, if you set
(31:36):
the precedent of this default language, but you do it
by giving a guy more money up front, well then
you've also set the precedent of giving a guy more
money up front. That's what it comes down to, right,
Like so and then with the same thing could kind
of be said about Trey is like, Okay, well, we
don't want to give a thirty year old pass rusher
a three year contract extension with a bunch of guaranteed
(31:59):
money after year one. We don't want to set that
precedent for other players. And I think maybe the idea
of precedence is we're talking about it a little bit
too much. But these are the things where eventually push
comes the shove, deadlines start to happen and you have
to consider, Okay, what is best for the football team now.
(32:20):
Financially what's best for the football team and physically what's
best for the football team might be two different things.
But you might have to be willing to change the
way you do things a couple of different ways in
order to make it work. Because not to sound morbid here,
(32:42):
but I would assume the Bengals do feel some pressure
to win as soon as possible, because of the age
of someone like Mike Brown, because of the fact that
you do have a lot of money tied up to
your quarterback and to now your top two wide receivers,
and who knows what this team's gonna look like by
(33:05):
the time those deals come to an end. I've said
this all along. The Bengals are not stupid. They might
be stubborn, but they're not stupid. They have to understand
the pressure to win now. And you look around the
rest of the AFC. Buffalo is a difficult opponent, not
going to be easy. Pittsburgh, I'll believe it when I
(33:26):
see it. I'm not buying into Aaron Rodgers. Cleveland is
a train wreck right now and probably will be for
the next forty years, as they've always been. But with Baltimore,
that's a viable option. That's a good team. But do
you feel like Baltimore took a significant step better or
step forward this offseason? I don't know that they did.
(33:50):
You look around the rest of the AFC, Kansas City
slightly better. Maybe it really is going to come down
to Buffalo, baltim More, Kansas City. Can you beat those teams?
Can you get to the playoffs and win those games?
Now is the time to be able to reload. And
(34:12):
to the Bengals credit, they've done a pretty good job
of setting themselves up for the future, setting themselves up
financially moving forward, because of the way that they've structured contracts,
because of the length of the deals that they have,
because of their draft picks, because of the options, all
of it. To say, they've got cap space to use
so that they can maximize it over the next couple
(34:33):
of years, but they also have cap space right now
that they aren't using and haven't maximized, and makes you
wonder are they going to It also makes you wonder
if their plan all along was to say, Okay, we're
gonna get something done with Trey, and we're gonna get
something done with Shamar, and we're gonna get something done
with Demetrius Knight, and we're gonna go up to the
(34:53):
limit as close as we can because we feel that
gives us the best chance to win again. We are
still it was what July twenty second of last year
that Amarius Mims signed his deal just before the start
of training camp. Ultimately, that's my deadline. I think it's
this Saturday that the rookies have to report, which, to
(35:16):
you is a bigger concern Shamar Stewart or Trey Hendrickson.
To me, it's Trey Hendrickson. I at least believe in
Joseph Osai and Miles Murphy as guys that have been
in the NFL for a couple of years to at
least be able to produce and be healthy and thrive
and be a little bit more productive in Al Golden's
(35:38):
scheme right away than maybe I do with Shamar Stewart.
So if that's still lingering as time goes on through
training camp, okay whatever, I'm not that worried about it.
My priority list right now would be Trey Hendrickson, Demetrius Knight,
Shamar Stewart because Demetrius, excuse me, Demetrius is gonna have
(35:59):
to play. Hey, you gotta have to play a lot now. Thankfully,
he at least got some reps in while he was
here for the off season program, and we've now seen
I think two maybe three second round pick deals get
done over the last twenty four to forty eight hours,
So maybe Demetrius is surely gonna get done quickly. I
(36:19):
don't know, but to me, that's the priority list. Like
Shamar Stewart, okay, whatever, At least we have some depth
at that spot and some guys that can play at
b rotational pieces. But the biggest thing is you're asking
a lot of that group without Trey. You're asking less
of that group with Trey, and I like the odds
(36:42):
of them performing at a high enough level with Trey
as opposed to without him, And that's ultimately what comes
down to, Like that should be the Bengals list of
priorities right now. Especially, It's just the Stewart thing is
just so minute and I don't understand his side. I
don't really understand the Bengals side. If it's this dumb,
can we just get to a solution so we're stop
(37:05):
pulling our hair out and stop having this conversation over
and over again. It's just it's getting so old. Part
of it is because it's that time of year, but
also isn't there a common goal here, That's what I'm
struggling with. Well, take a break, we'll come back. Your
phone calls five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 17 (37:27):
K Wise, Cincinnati, make us the number one pre sent
on your car radio.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Wrapping up our number one since e three sixty on
ESPN fifteen thirty. Talking a little bit about the Bengals
and Trey Hendrickson will continue the conversation ten minutes from
right now with Jeff Hobson from Bengals dot Com. We'll
ask him, of course, about the Ring of Honor inductees yesterday,
Dave Lapham and Lamar Parrish, and about what he's looking
forward to in this twenty twenty five Bengals season as
(37:57):
training camp gets set to get underway. But let's go
back to the phones. Five one, three seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. Let's go to Western Hills and talk with Don. Don.
What's up, Hey, how's it going today? Buddy good Man?
Speaker 14 (38:10):
Yeah, I don't know what's going on with the first
round draft pick. I'm just kind of jumping in now.
But I thought on the first round it was all
slotted already. Is that not true?
Speaker 2 (38:20):
Yeah? It's it's not about money at all. It's about
the default language in the deal.
Speaker 14 (38:26):
Okay, okay, because I was thinking, like, is this guy
trying to hold out for more money than this agreed
upon with.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
What's the union? Or okay?
Speaker 14 (38:34):
All right, yeah, all right, well that makes sense, but
still doesn't make souse. Sorry, Yeah, yeah, I'm sure you
don't really know either, right.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Yeah, I'll explain it don and thank you for the
phone call. Basically, there's language in the deal that says,
if you do something, we can avoid the future guarantees
in it. That's what they're trying to put in there,
which is if you get suspended, if you fail a
drug test, if you get uh busted for gambling, if
you get arrested, if you certain all these different things,
if this happens, we can avoid the future guarantees in
(39:03):
your deal. It's very common, pretty much normal for a
lot of teams, but the Bengals haven't done it as much,
haven't done it really at all, And so Shamar Stewart's like,
I don't want to be the first guy. You do
this too. You didn't do it last year with the
Marius mems and you picked him a spot after me.
That's what it comes down to. It's really silly. Let's
go to Charlotte. That's where Dave is. What's up, Dave, Hey, Austin.
Speaker 15 (39:27):
I guess a comment to the question I've always been
continued the player like Trey or you get go to Shamar,
why not just report and take a back injury or
something that's undiagnosable one of those conclusions we always talk about,
what why not just push the pressure like that? And
maybe I could follow up with the question to you
(39:49):
in the second of what would you ask Mike Brown
next week in mock turtle Soup?
Speaker 4 (39:53):
They could help push something forwards. I'm not sure if
you'll be there or not.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
H that's a good question, Dave. Let me think about that,
and thank you for the phone call. So here's why
Number one, they're not supposed to do that. And there
was actually just a report out there today by Pro
Football Talk about how the NFL and NFLPA just had
a little that the NFL won against the NFLPA about
that specific thing about faking injuries and fake a fake
(40:20):
injury settlement and that sort of thing, like it's not
always going to stop players from doing it, for sure,
but I don't really know how that helps either side
get to where they want to go. So my expectation
is that Trey will show up, he just won't practice.
It'll be the same style of the same style of
(40:40):
Jesse Bates a few years ago when he went to
training camp and didn't participate, and Jamar Chase last year
when he was at training camp and didn't participate, and
sort of t Higgins too, where Tea was there and
he did a few things, but he didn't always participate
in the team drills or certain things that he wouldn't do.
So that sort of like hold in style is because
much more common where you draw a lot of attention
(41:02):
to yourself, but at the same time you're at least
there and participating in the meetings and mentally and all
that other stuff. But your point is still being made.
As far as what I would ask Mike Brown at
Mock Turtle Soup Day, I'm not going to be there.
That's a good question. It's a really good question. Let
(41:24):
me let me simmer on that a little bit. And
in terms of like getting the deal done with Trey
or anything like that, I don't know that there's a
question I could ask that would really affect that or
elicit a crazy answer for Mike, because I think you know,
the way that they view contracts, in the way that
they view this situation is the answer would be, Trey's
a great, great player, and we really want him here,
(41:45):
and we appreciate what he's done, and we hope we
get something done. I mean, they're not going to just,
you know, change everything. I don't think that that's going
to happen. But I do understand where you're coming from.
Let's go to Mike in La. What's up, Mike, Why Austin?
Speaker 18 (42:01):
I love it when you talk football, That's what you
love so and it's so.
Speaker 4 (42:04):
Obvious, so I get a big kick out of it.
Speaker 18 (42:07):
I heard an interesting interview with Jimmy Johnson earlier today
on an early morning UH sports talk show out in California,
and he was talking, so they asked him about the
Rams and the Chargers, and I know a lot of
times we don't you guys don't like to hear about
that stuff, but they're viable entities in the NFL for
(42:28):
the upcoming season, and they just seem to be real.
Jimmy Johnson seemed really high on DeVante Adams, coming into
the fold with Puka. He thinks they compliment one another tremendously.
And then he was talking about their defense, how they
you know, Jared Verse. But then there's that defensive tackle
(42:49):
they got out of they picked out of Florida State
in the same draft, the defensive tackle Brydon Fisk. So
it was just an interesting uh uh talk with Jimmy
about the Chargers. And he's high on the fact that
Harball got an Augie Harris of course, and then followed
that up with that al Mai and Hopkins kid out
of North Carolina. So I just wondered if you would
give a quick snofsis on your two thoughts on the
(43:11):
on the Rams and the Chargers.
Speaker 19 (43:14):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
Yeah, Mike, thank you for the phone call. I think
the Rams are really good. I think they are a
legitimate threat in the NFC. The Chargers, it's all about potential.
It's kind of the story of Justin Herbert. I think
they have all the talent in the world. I would
assume they will be a better team and another year
of Jim Harball and the way that he did he
does things. But the Rams I think are one of
(43:36):
the best teams in the National or in the NFC.
I think one of the best teams in the NFL,
the Chargers. I think it's all there, but they've got
to be able to put it all together, which is
kind of in the story of Justin Herbert's career, and
maybe a little bit of continuity will help him. But
the AFC West, it's gonna be a good division. It's
gonna be a really good division as far as I'm concerned.
All Right, we'll take a break. We'll come back. When
(43:57):
we do. We'll talk Jeff Hoopson from Bengals dot Com
about the Ring of Honor inductees and the twenty twenty
five team as we get set for training camp next week.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (44:09):

Speaker 5 (44:30):

Speaker 1 (44:32):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Bye, Hello, Welcome in our number two of Cincy three
sixty here on ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Austin Elmore.
We're heavy on Bengals conversation today as we are now
less than a week away from training camp getting underway,
and there are storylines everywhere, including the storylines yesterday about
the Bengals latest Ring of Honor inductees. Excited to talk
(45:00):
about that with my next guest. He's been covering the
Bengals and been around the Bengals for a long long time.
He's one of the best in the business, one of
our favorite guests. His name is Jeff Hobson and he
joins us now, Jeff, how you doing.
Speaker 4 (45:11):
Man, Austin, thanks very much for having me on. A
pleasure to be with you. Yeah, and you're outreach and
you're outreaching. No, I did not cover Lamar.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
Paris not being doing it that long. You have not
been doing it that long, but certainly you know the
impact of a guy like Lamar Parish. When you first
heard the news that it was Lamar and lap going in,
what was your immediate reaction.
Speaker 4 (45:37):
No brainers, you know, it was just like all the
other announcements. You know, we've had the Ring of Honor.
It's been guys, guys that belong. And you know, I've
been saying it for a long time. Lamar was Chad
before Chad and Dion before Dion. I mean, the guy's
a Hall of Famer. I mean, as much as we've
(45:58):
talked about Kenny Anderson and Willie Anderson, who are you know,
should be deadlocks stinches, so is Lamar And just great
to see him. You know, suddenly he's seventy seven years
old and it's just great to see him get that recognition.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
Well yeah, I mean the purpose of this is being
able to honor these great players and bring recognition to
their career and myself included. Like I always knew Lamar
Paris was really good, but when you kind of dive
into like his stats, you're like, oh, crap, this dude
could be in Canton, that's how good he was. Like
what was his impact on those Bengals teams of the
seventies and the success that they had going to the
(46:35):
playoffs a few times?
Speaker 4 (46:37):
As great as that offense was with what pd brought
from Cleveland as a skeleton for the West Coast offense
that was developed by Walsh and Pbe and it was
you know, perfectly engineered by Kenny Anderson. That was a
defensive football team. I mean, they want some, they want
some unbelievable bloodfests. And Lama was a big reason why.
(47:00):
I mean he scored thirteen. He scored thirteen non offensive
touchdowns and a lot of those were in those AFC,
you know Central games that it was, you know, the Steelers,
the oil was it was just it was you know
the Browns. You know, they weren't a lot of points
out there, especially in that era. And that was you know,
(47:20):
Henny Ryan. In my parish, you had Hall of Fame corners,
You had a Pro Bowl safety and Tarmy Castlanova. You know,
you had a wonderful cover linebacker, al Bot Champ and
you know it really Mike Mike reag was not on
the seventy five team, but he was on the first
five teams in the seventies and you know when they
(47:42):
made the playoffs twice and they were the youngest expansion
team to win a division title. You know, Mike Reid
was one of the best players in the game. So
it was a defensive it was it was a defense.
It was a very well balanced teams in like the
early seventies PB's last two teams in particular, but that
(48:05):
was really you know, Kenny and Lamiya really anchored some
great defensive efforts.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
Yeah, you talk about Ken Riley and obviously anytime you
have those two guys on the field at the same time, Like,
how important is that dynamic to those two making each
other better? Do you think?
Speaker 4 (48:26):
Well? I think it was big because they had so
much in common Austin. I mean, they were both both
from historically black black colleges, both from Florida, both had
played offense their entire careers. Kenny was a quarterback, Lamara
was a running back, and they became some of it,
(48:46):
and they became two of the greatest corners in the
game just from you know, pure coaching and learning, and
it was you know, and they had each other. They
were roommates for eight years. You know, I thought Lamia
was really eloquent talking about his relations and said, yesterday
with Kenny and now Kenny's family after Kenny suddenly passed
away five years ago, and you know, they they bounced,
(49:10):
you know, he said, they talked about everything. You know,
they bounced a lot off each other and both of
them went on to become head coaches at their alma MIAs.
So you're talking about two very very smart guys who
knew the game. And uh, I think they helped each
other just they had so much in common. You know,
some people would say, well, Lama was so flashy and
(49:31):
Kenny was so you know, quiet at textbook and Lamia
was you know, my instincts and all that. But they
they had a lot more in common than they had differently,
and I think it. I think you're right. I think
it did. I think it did help them that they
were together.
Speaker 2 (49:45):
Yeah, the same but different. Talking to Jeff Hopson, senior
writer Bengals dot Com, when you think of Dave Lapham,
what's the first thing that comes to mind?
Speaker 4 (49:56):
This his enthusiastic I kind of think that my thought,
you know, I kind of think of my daughter, Who's Carrie,
Who's the greatest singles fan I know?
Speaker 16 (50:05):
And uh, you know she broke she broke up with
a boy because he turned off the the postgame show. Uh,
you just don't do that, you know, you know, So
I do think that. Carry The first thing I think
about is Cary when I think about lap.
Speaker 4 (50:19):
But uh, you know, he's so popular, he's so enthusiastic personally,
he's been a great friend to me. Uh, he's really
he's helped me so much my career. He's a fellow
bass stater. We both went to Syracuse, and he's been
so kind with his time and his expertise. You know,
he's probably sick of talking to me, but uh, you
(50:40):
know he's missed a Bengal for a reason. He's uh,
he's everybody's favorite. He's my Uh, he's my wife Anita's favorite.
I mean, uh, she says, oh, that's gonna see me
coming because she's always got to hug him, you know.
So it's but that's Lap, you know, that's Lap.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
Yeah, that's that's that's interesting. How do you measure his
impact not only as a player, but also in the
forty years since as a broadcaster. How do you measure
his actual impact on the franchise?
Speaker 4 (51:10):
Well, I mean, you know, you just look at you
look like people like Canned in Kerry who were sure
you know, they're not You probably wouldn't say, you know
that you're average football fan, but they are. And the
big reason is because a Lap. And how do you
measure that? I don't think you can. I thought Dan
Hoyt said it said it quite well when they were
Actually we were asked a year ago after coryon, after
(51:33):
Cory and CRUMBRAI get in, who is next? And I said, lamar,
and Hordy said laugh, and we were right, and Lapp said,
you know, and Hordy said, because like out of all
the players fifteen hundred Bengals who have been here, you
know who's you know, Igub Lapp has had the most
impact of any of them. And that's you know, there's
(51:53):
been some great play. You know, you get Hall of
famers and Anthony and Riley and you know, the greatest
quarterback not in the Hall of same and Kenny Anderson,
you know, great tackles who were on the cutting edge
and changed their game, and Willie Anderson and Whitworth. But
uh but look at all the people that laugh has reached.
You know, A great, a great, a great ambassador.
Speaker 2 (52:14):
For the team and you know, well for me, you know,
the Bengals have played in three Super Bowls, but maybe
the most famous game they've ever played in was the
Freezer Bowl. And it was Lapp who was behind the
idea to go sleeveless in that game. I think that's
a big part of his legacy.
Speaker 4 (52:29):
There's no question.
Speaker 20 (52:30):
You know.
Speaker 4 (52:30):
When I asked them, I said, you know, was it
you know, I think it shows it to his leadership
as a as a player too, you know, I mean
he had to get I think I think all those
offensive line got out there. It was interesting, he said.
Speaker 21 (52:43):
Though.
Speaker 4 (52:43):
I guess Max was thinking about it too. Max Montoya,
who's another guy who is a you know, who is
a Ring of Honor guy, the greatest guy the Bengals
have ever had, and a perennial pro bowler. But Max,
you know, is that Laugh was worried about big Hands Johnson,
and Max was worried about Louie Kelchen, you know. And
I think they probably talked it out and uh, you know,
(53:04):
uh but you know, leadership man, and uh it's you know,
you could see it that day and uh you know,
and it also you know, and my lab will be
the first to tell you that help did it worked too.
Speaker 2 (53:18):
Yeah, leadership and toughness. You know, Jeff, you mentioned Paul
Brown earlier. What do you think he would think of
the Ring of Honor.
Speaker 4 (53:30):
Oh, I think he'd I think he'd I think he'd
like it. I don't think he was, uh, I mean,
he didn't like stuff like that, because he didn't like
guys to be you know, above, you know, other guys.
You know, I think he was, he was uncomfortable stuff
like that. But I mean, I think, uh, I think
he would. But he was also a guy who changed
(53:53):
with the times too, you know what I mean. He's
an open minded guy. I think he'd love to see
what his uh, what his great granddaughters have done, Carolyn
and Elizabeth Blackburn have done with this. I think I
think he'd get a kick out of that. Mike Brown
gets a kick out of it. I don't think Mike's
a big you know, Mike will tell you this. I
think he said this, you know, uh, you know, they
(54:16):
had to convince me, you know what I mean. So,
but but you know, Elizabeth convinced them. And I think
it's been I think it's taken off. And I think,
you know, I think Mike really enjoys making that phone
call that those guys, Yeah, you know, I think that's
I think that's something that maybe he didn't think about before,
(54:36):
but now that he's done her twelve times, you know,
I think that, you know, I think I think he
gets kicked out of it too. But I think, you know,
Paul would certainly be uh, you know, he'd certainly be
on board with Lapp and Lamar, there's no question.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
Sure. Before we get to this year's team, you wanted
to talk about this event that's coming up at the
Cincinnati Zoo. That is a cause that's close to your heart.
Tell us about this and what's coming up and the
cause that it's supporting.
Speaker 4 (55:07):
Yeah, awesome, thanks so much for letting me talk about it.
It's it's the Cincinnati Congenital Hot Walk on August second
at the Zoo. Things started around down there at seven am,
but the walk is at eight point thirty runs through
ten am. We're trying to put a light on heart
defects and particularly children. My twenty nine day old grandson,
(55:33):
jack Howson, named after Jackie Robinson, passed away from a
height defect, the transposition of the great of the great ateries.
And so you know, not only to be aware of it,
but and to honor those who are dealing with heigh issues,
but then those who have passed, but also to you know,
(55:54):
shed you know, to put a light on you know,
natal you know, pre natal pre birth concerns and screenings,
getting the proper screenings, finding out about your you know,
your family background when it comes to heart disease and
how that might impact you know, a baby. You know,
check the screenings, make sure you know, you get all
(56:15):
your bases covered. And that's say the wonderful event. That's
I just found out Jack is named the title sponsor. Yeah,
the Cincinnati folks, Cincinnati is tremendous. I put together a
golf outing, you know, Austin. I'm a I'm a bad organizer,
(56:36):
and I was, but I was able to. But we
were able to put something together because the people in
Cincinnati is so nice. We raised over twenty thousand dollars
for the Children's Heart Foundation back in May, so that
that this the walk will help add to that. And
I hope you will come to the next we call
it the Jack We hope you come to the next
golf outing. We're gonna have it in next May again
(56:59):
at the Gingerry Run, and we'll certainly we'll get a
card for you.
Speaker 2 (57:03):
That'd be awesome. I would love to be a part
of that and help that cause. Just looking at the
website here Children's Heart Foundation dot org. They got a
link there for volunteering registering. It's one mile walk and
they're calling it Hope for every heart beat August second
at the Cincinnati Zoo. That is really cool stuff. Thanks
for letting us know about that, Jeff, and looking forward
(57:24):
to hearing how it went. As far as the twenty
twenty five Bengals go, we all know about Hendrickson and
Shamar Stewart and all this other stuff. Is there like
an under the radar storyline that maybe you're looking forward
to as training camp gets underway.
Speaker 4 (57:41):
Well, I'd like to get to Meetrius Knight in too.
He's a linebacker, the second round linebacker. I have a
feeling of those second round contracts will probably get I
think they'll all get sorted out here at some point,
but I would think the second round thing would get done,
you know, hopefully, because Knight's gonna play. It looks you know,
it's gonna play. They lined them up the next to
(58:01):
Logan Wilson all Spring. So Night's a guy I'm looking at.
I think that's one of those. And I guess he's
really not under the raid ad because he's playing a
you know, because he's playing such a high profile position
and he is stating but to me, uh, awesome, this
is thing that this is Al Golden's training camp. Yeah, uh,
that's that. That's the storyline. To me, they're talking about
(58:25):
a club that did everything with a football, but you know,
send a pass on post, but they didn't stop you know,
but they didn't but they really couldn't keep people out
of the end zone, you know. So I like to compare,
you know, what they did with when the when? When
when when the Bengals hide Mighty Zimmer back in two
thousand and eight and how he you know, respected guy
(58:50):
Zimmer was not a college you know, did not go
away to college like Al did. But Zimmer had had
skins in the wall, just like Al has skins in
the wall all and I think we remember what you know,
I was going to turn that thing around, and certainly
you know, uh they get to helld a lot more
talent here now. But it shows you what the impact
(59:13):
of a coach can have. I think, you know, people
are excited, His players are excited. I think his coaches
and his new coaches are excited. And that's that's obviously.
I think to me, a big, a big storyline out
of camp is I think Al Golden is going to
have a big impact. And I remember what Zimmer did
(59:33):
back in eight nine, and I think I think ALC
and I think al Can had a similar impact.
Speaker 2 (59:39):
It's interesting you say that because I I sense like
maybe a renewed energy, especially with the defensive backs. Do
you sense that at all with without Golden coming in?
Speaker 4 (59:49):
Yeah, I think anytime and lou was good, you know,
Louis lou had a great run here, you know. But
I think it's like anything else. You know this even
in the business long enough and been in enough newsrooms
and classrooms that you know, when you get a change
at the top, you get you get it, and there's
a different vibe and and there is and there is
(01:00:11):
a little bit of energy and it's uh, you know,
and it needs different things for different people. Like for
a guy like Cam Taylor Britt, who was kind of uh,
you know, he had a you know, he kind of
had an up and down year last year. He kind
of gets a fresh looks on it, you know, trying
to get back to twenty twenty two. Or you get
a guy like you got a guy like Josh Newton,
who was you know, trying to prove that he can
(01:00:35):
you know, that he can get in the Freeman rotation
there back in the secondary and now he's got a
new he's got new eyes looking at him. But the
thing about how too Austin, is he's been here before.
Now a lot of the guys haven't been here. A
lot of the guys hadn't been here when I was here,
But some of the big dogs has. And I think
that's uh, you know Hendrickson Logan, you know, uh, they
(01:00:58):
you know, they know, you know, bj.
Speaker 2 (01:00:59):
Hill, they know.
Speaker 4 (01:01:01):
So I think that's a big help too. And I
but I think anytime you get a change, you know,
you got a new defensive line coach, you got a
new linebackers coach. Both guys very high energy. Jerry Montgomery
and Mike Hodges respectfully, both long time NFL veterans elsewhere
who stayed in one spot Jerry and Green Bay Hodges
(01:01:23):
and the Orleans who stayed around for a long time
because they could develop players. You need energy to do that.
And I think that was again, I think those are
two positions. I think you can see a little bit
of that now.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Well, training camp coming up just next week. Do you
have a new bucket hat ready to go for training camp?
I know you got the morning practices now, so maybe
not as hot but you got your bucket hat ready
to go.
Speaker 4 (01:01:49):
The bucket hat's ready to go. You can't go struck
because the sun sneaks. The sun sneaks in there like
Mamaya returned the punt. You gotta go, bucket. It's tremendous.
It's uh, it's just uh nothing. I mean, I mean,
I mean, you look, you know, I don't look don't
look very good. I look like I you know, perhaps
(01:02:09):
some uh you know, but I you know. But the
thing is, though, Pete Brown War, that's good enough for me.
The great, the late great scouting guru. Who is one?
Who is who is the guy in the HBCUs who
is finding the Rioleys and the Lamars? He wore a
hat good enough for me.
Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
That's a perfect full circle. Jeff, thanks so much Bengals
dot com. Looking forward to your coverage as training camp
goes around, and looking forward to the Cincinnati Congenital Heart
Walk August the second at the Cincinnati Zoo. Check out
the Children's Heart Foundation dot org for more information. Jeff,
thanks for spending some time with me today. Man, We'll
talk to you soon.
Speaker 4 (01:02:50):
Awesome. You're so kind to mention that. Thank you very
much for getting the word out, I'll get the report
back to you, and I I hope you'll be talking
to you many times.
Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
This season looking to it. Thanks Jeff. That is Jeff Hobson.
You know, I wonder if he's tired of guys like
Jamar and Lamar and Shamar because of having to say
those names all the time with that Boston accent and
everybody uh making fun of him. But I love talking
to Jeff and I love his coverage of the Bengals.
He's seen it all. He has really seen it all.
(01:03:21):
That's Jeff Hobson. We'll take a break when we come
back talkbacks, and I'll tell you what a sincey Shirts
gift card it's still up for grabs this week. We'll
do that next. This is since He three sixty on
the whole of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
Miss an episode of Since He three sixty Here every
show at ESPN fifteen thirty dot com.
Speaker 6 (01:03:40):
All right, bo ht me hear you good loud oh
wld hah too ah fru.
Speaker 20 (01:03:51):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
Listen to sup to backs well, listen to the cloud.
Get me a bud of sproud Jonas. We hope those
other two divert come back ru.
Speaker 10 (01:04:11):
Go on.
Speaker 22 (01:04:15):
Ohing comes close to the show.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
We got hag right, Hello the.
Speaker 16 (01:04:24):
Stars over talk.
Speaker 6 (01:04:27):
Back show, rods Well.
Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
Rodswell, I hope the worst singing that on Monday, after
a Red Series win over the New York Mets, they
get back in action tomorrow. Nicolodolo on the mound for Cincinnati, Drew,
do you know that the clowns that they are referring
to Harry is referring to that's talking about you. I
kind of assumed that it was that was about Apparently
(01:04:52):
I didn't know this. It was apparently made about you
and Shad Brindle. Yeah, are you offended by that? Not
at all? Okay? Good, you should not at all?
Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
What do we got? What we got? Awesome? Elmore, Jim
from Ross there was.
Speaker 23 (01:05:04):
Something in their last night the stars who were right
Evander he was shining for ref Sea since he im
not messy, Evander who never thought that we could lose.
Speaker 2 (01:05:21):
It was clean.
Speaker 5 (01:05:22):
She If we have to do the same again, we
will neither.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
End Alright, then Jim has got some unbelievable race that
is that is some pipes. Then shut out to Jim.
That was incredible.
Speaker 24 (01:05:43):
Hey, Austin. It's talk back manner, Scott. I hope you're
feeling better. I do feel better, Thank you. No, it's
got to be hard when you're not feeling well and
happy to talk a lot. Anyway, man, we only got
forty nine more days until we get this thing going.
Can't wait your thoughts on that the Reds. We'd be
kind talking about the Big Bopper, and I want to
(01:06:06):
win a talkback gift card maybe for the worst talkback.
Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
That's the only chance I got. You know what I mean,
you're in play. I mean, let's see what you can
do for the rest of the week. I mean, if
you have a week of three day or three three
straight bad talkbacks, I mean, I guess it's in play.
I mean I don't know the Big Bopper. By the way,
Lee May fun story here. My birthday is May twenty fourth, Okay,
(01:06:34):
Lee May was number twenty three. I always wanted I
always wish that he was number twenty four so I
could buy a Lee May jersey that says May twenty
fourth your birthday. That's completely out of left field about
sc last night, Yeah, Lionel MESSI you know his middle name?
(01:06:55):
What it was? Have you heard us play the middle
name game. Drew, No, it's my favorite thing in the world.
I'm I'm an idiot. I don't know if it's just
like I get it from Chris Berman from back in
the day, or I just make a most ridiculous like
thing to put on somebody's middle name, you know, to
go with their first name with their last name. It was.
(01:07:18):
It was messy. Well that it was for inter Miami.
Speaker 25 (01:07:22):
What's up, Austin James from Batavia? Just shooting a question
out to talk back audience. Uh. I'm lucky enough to
be attending the next six Red Games in New York
and Washington. Nice, and I was wondering if anybody had
any good ideas of things to do outside of Washington
Nationals Park and the City Field. So if anyone has
(01:07:45):
any ideas, please let me know, go right to Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:07:49):
Thank you, Drew. Have you ever been to either of
those ballparks. I'm not I have been to Nationals Park,
but I was there. It was pretty new, and that area,
like the Navy Yard and all that was kind of
a rough area. Yeah, time, but I think that's been
built up since then, so I don't know what all
is around there.
Speaker 11 (01:08:08):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:08:09):
Now, and I've never been to New York City or
City Field, so I got nothing for you there. I
bet Jeff and Virginia might have some recommendations for you.
I'm sure he would, he's a NAT season ticket holder.
But I hope, if nothing else, I hope you get
to enjoy DC because it is a really cool city.
Speaker 13 (01:08:26):
Oh yay, yay, all.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
Right, Yeah, it's hard to disagree with that.
Speaker 26 (01:08:33):
Hey, Audie, it's Adam and with a great deadline coming
up and things about to go crazy, let's just consider
that the Reds are buyers.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
Okay?
Speaker 26 (01:08:44):
Who are three players that you would consider untouchable and
free players that you would say I'm.
Speaker 11 (01:08:50):
All right with getting rid of this guy?
Speaker 26 (01:08:52):
Y Free untouchables, of course, would be Hunter Green, Ellie
de la Cruz, and Tyler Stevenson.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
What's say you, Audie? Tyler Stevenson? That's interesting?
Speaker 23 (01:09:00):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
On the current big league team? Uh, My untouchables would
probably be Chase Burns and Ellie. That's probably be the
only two untouchables on the current big league team in
the system. I would add Alfredo Duno and Sal Stewart
to that. Everybody else I think is fair game. Hunter Green? Yeah,
(01:09:25):
I hate I hate that, but that's kind of where
I'm at with Hunter. Yeah, what about Abbot? You could
that's a good one. That's a good question as well.
I would wonder if if the Reds by the end
of the season will get a deal done with Abbot.
That's not all that dissimilar to what they did with
Hunter Green. Uh. The thing with Hunter though, like you've
got years of control, very cheap. You could get a
(01:09:47):
Monster haul for him. Yeah, sure, If Burns is who
you think Burns is, if Lodolo is consistent in the
way that he has been so far this season, if
Abbot is going to be an all star, Rhett Lauder
is still down there, you could get a Monster return
for Hunter Green. Not saying they should, but nor do
I think they will, right, Yeah, I don't think they
(01:10:07):
would do that either.
Speaker 20 (01:10:10):
Ryman, Ronnie here and Will Tony's at the decory deck
standpoint withdrawal. Instead, we got Drew Wester something better than
Nick Krawl. Joey Burr's looking cool in that tub of vice.
A start bench cut right now, sure would be nice.
Start bench cut, No turn signal guy, oh signy thrown
(01:10:32):
out the window guy and hasta back and every parking
spot guy.
Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
Oh, okay, now I'm gonna I'm gonna start the back
into parking spot guy, because that's me. Yeah, I back
her starting spots. I'm starting that, and I stand with
those people. I'm gonna cut the dude with the cigarette.
What was the other one?
Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
No turn signal guy? Oh, I think I'm cutting no
turn signal? Yeah, I think I will too, because it
does drive me a little nice, especially when you're driving
on the highway and somebody just says, oh, I'm gonna
get over now, not turn on my turn signal.
Speaker 2 (01:11:08):
I really dislike littering, though, correct I was. Those are
two very like. I could go either way with either
of those two things. It's the difference is minimal. A cigarette, though,
I feel like, maybe not as big of a deal
as some of the littering that I seem. I was
behind a guy in trap. I almost tweeted about this.
You ever, sometimes think I should or shouldn't tweet about this.
(01:11:30):
Every day there's a dude, a guy in front of me,
like diagonal in front of me to my right, and
he just rolled his window down and threw out like
like a lot of napkins. Oh my gosh, like dirty napkins.
And I was like, dude, bad bad people out there,
Like that's so bad. Yeah, that's bad. And I've seen
(01:11:53):
that happen to me several times before. Cigarette. I feel
like it makes a little bit more sense. Maybe, I
don't know. But turn signal though, Golly, that can make
me mad. Oh yeah, I agree. I'll bench the cigarette.
I'll cut the turn signal.
Speaker 26 (01:12:07):
One question to ask a mock Turtle soup to Mic.
Speaker 4 (01:12:10):
Okay, is there a dollar value over.
Speaker 12 (01:12:12):
The fair value of the team that you would accept
and let the team move on from your family?
Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
I don't think it would be good for you if
you asked that question. I don't think. I don't think
it would end well for anybody.
Speaker 3 (01:12:23):
You would be banned from all mock to for the
rest of eturn.
Speaker 2 (01:12:27):
Yeah. And also, I don't think there is a dollar
amount to be honest, Yeah, I don't have to be
way up there. I don't think there is. Yeah, it
would have to be I mean, double the price of
the franchise. I don't think. I don't think that exists
for them. No one thing. I think one thing I
think people got to understand about the Brown family and
a blackbird family. They love football like they love it
(01:12:51):
like this is their life. All right, Okay, no talkbacks
and a.
Speaker 4 (01:12:58):
Hopper, no talkbacks in a you here that car.
Speaker 13 (01:13:01):
Austin said, there's no talk back to then the hopper
this way?
Speaker 5 (01:13:04):
What are you saying about that?
Speaker 4 (01:13:05):
Herbert?
Speaker 22 (01:13:06):
Where here?
Speaker 27 (01:13:06):
If you're bored to having travel yanking going up there,
you head on over to trash.
Speaker 4 (01:13:11):
Hang Man's heal the help you get your hat performers one?
Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
All right, save that one. Yep, we'll save that one.
We'll bookmark that one. Kevin has entered the hopper yep.
After this, Johnny, you gotta start bench cut for you.
Speaker 5 (01:13:27):
What's more likely?
Speaker 21 (01:13:29):
Is it more likely that on September the first, Yes,
Shamar Stewart has.
Speaker 5 (01:13:35):
Been practicing with the team with a sign contract.
Speaker 2 (01:13:39):
Is it more likely that on September the first, Trey.
Speaker 21 (01:13:43):
Hendrickson is practicing with the team with a sign contract.
Speaker 5 (01:13:47):
Or is it more likely that both of them are
not practicing with sign contracts?
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
Who good question?
Speaker 3 (01:13:55):
I would say Stewart with the contract is the most
likely of those three outcomes.
Speaker 2 (01:14:02):
I'm gonna say opposite, I'm gonna say Trey Hendrickson is
the most likely Shamar Stewart the least likely both of
them together.
Speaker 3 (01:14:10):
I was just going with the date there of September first,
because September I could see Trey's dragging a little bit longer.
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
Yeah, I could too, But the more I just keep
getting a feeling that there's something close with the benjson Trey.
I have nothing to base that on, just a gut,
just a gut. YEP.
Speaker 28 (01:14:31):
Big shout out to f C Cincinnati on a phenomenal
bounce back game last night at Tikuel Stadium, coming off
that rough loss against Columbus, giving up the lead, what
do they do? They shut out Inner Miami and Messi,
who had a brace in five games in a row.
Vander got the brace instead. Shout out Gerrado Vealezuela for
the game winner. Really really impressive showing onto Salt Lake
(01:14:58):
on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
Let's go FCC.
Speaker 3 (01:15:00):
I just want to point out how well run FC is.
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
They do everything right.
Speaker 3 (01:15:05):
They lose Acosta. A lot of teams, you lose a
player of that caliber and it takes a year to
kind of maybe retool. They get this Avander guy, and
he got player. Yeah, he's been incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:15:18):
To watch and they've built around him.
Speaker 3 (01:15:20):
Yes, exactly, and it so kudos to all the people
that work in the front office for f C Cincinnati.
They deserve a ton of credit for the product they're
putting out on the field this year.
Speaker 2 (01:15:31):
The best way to describe FC Cincinnati is smart and aggressive.
Speaker 5 (01:15:35):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:15:36):
And if you have those two things, you'll be pretty
damn good at sports repping.
Speaker 22 (01:15:42):
And Natty out here and Sonny hots some of the
what up Boddy yo right now? Priority, get trade done,
get Night signed immediately. And the Stewart thing, it is
what it is, Homy. We moved on from you. Play talk.
We don't know what to snuff you all. It is
what it is. We can do better without you, brother,
FC sis Night he smacked Miami, gave him a three piece.
I'm loving that MESSI was all messed up and stormed off.
(01:16:05):
Didn't even sake nobody's hand play. That's what you get
for messing with the big dogs. We own Miami. We
coming for the East.
Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
Yeah. You know that mindset around Shamar Stewart, I think
is where a lot of people are. I'm kind of
sensing that, Like people are like, it's funny because on
the tray subject they're like, you know, they hate the
Bengals on the Schamar subject. They hate Shamar, which just
kind of funny because but like, here's the thing though,
Like the way that he I think he turned me
(01:16:34):
off and a lot of the fans off. The way
he handled that practice, the post practice thing where he
didn't even practice that he didn't show up the next day.
It's like, buddy, you don't have the equity built up,
especially for somebody who didn't do jack, you know what
in college to be talking like that. Yeah, well that's
the thing.
Speaker 3 (01:16:51):
It's you know what, what has he done for the
like trays that he's gone out and delivered two of
the best edge rushing seasons for the Angles in the
last twenty.
Speaker 2 (01:17:01):
Five He has a legitimate argument, right, like this is
the little led the league in sacks two.
Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
Years ago, and Shamar Stewart, as you know somebody put
it yesterday, has four and a half more sacks than me.
Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
Right, Texas A and X exactly.
Speaker 27 (01:17:15):
Hey, Austin, you're doing a great job holding down the
fort this week.
Speaker 2 (01:17:18):
Thank you.
Speaker 27 (01:17:18):
This is Kate from Montgomery. I must say I was
very amused and was actually chuckling that you had a
call from someone asking for more information about what Shamar
Stewart is asking for. I honestly didn't think there was
any Bengals fan. I know it's in one hundred mile
radius of the river. That didn't know what he was
(01:17:40):
asking for.
Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
Wow, add Kate to the hopper. That's I agree with this.
Like it took everything in me in the moment not
to like laugh at the man because it was like,
wait a minute, you don't know what's going on, right,
And he said, I'm just now getting into this. So
maybe he's all baseball mode. Maybe he's been on vacation
(01:18:03):
since uh April, I don't know.
Speaker 18 (01:18:06):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
Yeah. It was nice to be able to explain that
to someone again. All right, final one, All right.
Speaker 4 (01:18:16):
Start bench cut.
Speaker 19 (01:18:18):
I told my family for years that someday they're probably
going to have to identify me at the Morgue because
I've gotten out of my car at a stop flight
and picked up someone's cigarettes.
Speaker 2 (01:18:29):
Oh my gosh, Angel, you know, although that would go
over dude. I actually heard about a story, crazy story.
I was producing down the hall the other day and
there was this I don't know where it was. I
feel like it was local where it was a road
rage thing. This lady beeped at somebody and he followed
(01:18:53):
her home and like forced his way into the house
and started punching on her husband, and like the kids
were in the car, just like it was insane, Like whoa,
I get like, I get really mad sometimes when I'm driving.
I will lay on the horn every once in a while,
but I've learned now that people are nuts.
Speaker 3 (01:19:12):
Oh yeah, so I really can't say or do like
what I want to do. I'm not I'm not a
horn guy. I will not lay on the horn. I
will I say every word in the English language with
my windows rolled up at you. But I am I
am not a lay on the horn kind of kind
of person. We did ever one you ever given somebody
the bird? Oh well yeah plenty?
Speaker 2 (01:19:31):
Oh you do do that? Well, well that's worse.
Speaker 7 (01:19:34):
Have I?
Speaker 21 (01:19:34):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:19:34):
Have I done it? Yes? Do I do it anymore?
Speaker 10 (01:19:37):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:19:37):
I cannot because I've heard horror stories similar to the
one that you just described. So I know I no
longer do that. And we started driving, I'll just give
them my thumbs up.
Speaker 15 (01:19:48):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
Now, have you ever screwed up? And you like take responsibility?
Like you pat yourself like, hey, that's on me. Yes,
I've done that. Yes, we had one come in under
the gun. Fantastic.
Speaker 5 (01:20:00):
Imagine this scenario.
Speaker 20 (01:20:02):
Stuart stays at Texas A.
Speaker 4 (01:20:03):
And M if they.
Speaker 28 (01:20:05):
Have a down year, go five and seven, and he's
sitting at home come February, he's watching.
Speaker 6 (01:20:10):
The Bengals playing the Super Bowl.
Speaker 27 (01:20:12):
They win, and he's looking at his hand and he's like, wow,
I'm an idiot.
Speaker 5 (01:20:17):
That would make me so happy.
Speaker 2 (01:20:19):
I wouldn't be happy because the man missed out on
a bunch of money. I'd be happy the Bengals won
the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:20:25):
But dear lord, I gotta think if the Bengals won
the Super Bowl without Smart Stewart, Smart Stewart would be
pretty far down the list of things Bengals fans would
think about.
Speaker 2 (01:20:34):
Yeah, well, well you never know, you never know, but gosh,
what a glorious day that would be. My God. All right,
let's take a break. When we come back. Drew's got
an open update for us the Open Championship in Royal Port, Rush,
he said, coming up next to ESPN fifteen times, rolling
(01:20:58):
right along ESPN fifteen thirty. This is since E three
to sixty. My name's Austin Elmore. Coming up fifteen minutes
from right now, our guy Sam Monson from the Check
the Mic podcast over at the thirty third team. He's
gonna join us talk a little bit about the Bengals,
about Trey Hendrickson. I'm going to start our interview by
asking him our poll question. Our poll question today Revivefitnessystems
(01:21:22):
dot Com pole question, presented by coach PJ. Street, is
when will Trey Hendrickson first play for the Bengals this
season week one, after week four, after week eight or
he won't right now? Sixty seven percent say week one,
eighteen percent say he won't play, fourteen percent say after
(01:21:46):
week four. That is the update for the Revive Fitnessystems
dot Com pole question. Looking forward to talking more with
Sam about that, but right now it is time four.
I'm waiting for the music to come. In an open
update the one and fifty third British Open happening at
(01:22:07):
Royal Port Rush in Northern Ireland, and Drew give us
a full and comprehensive report. All right well at royal
Port Rush today there are five players tied at the
top at four under. Included in that is one Matt Fitzpatrick.
You love Matt Fitzpatrick. Matt Fitzpatrick among the group at
four under, Jacob Scove, Olsen, how tong Lee and Christian Bezeidenhote.
(01:22:31):
What did you call me?
Speaker 3 (01:22:32):
Christian bozeiden Hoote okay, and Lucas Glover at four under par.
Scotti Scheffler.
Speaker 2 (01:22:38):
Great opening round for the number one player in the world,
three under, one shot back. Also, your boy Rory Mackle,
turn that music down just a little bit. There we go. Okay,
your boy Rory mcelelrus Rory off to a hot start.
He's three under through ten, one shot back of the
lead American Harris English also in that group at three under.
(01:22:58):
A couple notables as we go on the list here
Justin Rose at two under, Phil Mickelson at one under
par this morning. John from what I've heard, he did
come out hot. My pick to win John Rahm one
under today, as well as the last champion at royal
Port Rush, Shane Lowry. He is at one under today.
A couple notables from other players around. Jordan Speith my
(01:23:22):
pick to top five. Not going well. Not going well
for Jordan. He is four under through eleven.
Speaker 3 (01:23:29):
Tommy Fleetwood a popular pick this week for many many
people is at two over par and Bryson Deshamba also
struggling here in the first round.
Speaker 2 (01:23:40):
He is at plus three through eleven. Where do you
stand on Bryson? I hated him years ago.
Speaker 3 (01:23:46):
I've kind of softened on him because I think he's
gained a lot of self awareness about himself. And a
quick update, Rory McElroy has bogeied the eleventh hole, dropping
him to two under par. Still very much in the
thick of it, but the Northern Irish crowd getting behind
their guy Rory McElroy.
Speaker 2 (01:24:06):
How many groups are left on the on the course
right now because they started at what six am?
Speaker 3 (01:24:11):
Oh earlier than that, my friend, coverage began this morning
at one, well six thirty am over there, oh over there,
which here scanning through the leader board here, it looks
like all of the golfers are playing their second nine,
so whether I don't know if they were doing split
front and back today, but all of them are on
(01:24:33):
their second nine except for one group who.
Speaker 2 (01:24:36):
Is playing the ninth hole.
Speaker 3 (01:24:37):
All right, so we are getting towards starting to get
towards the end of coverage here as we as the
first round concludes at Royalport.
Speaker 2 (01:24:46):
Rush is your dream job to be a golf announcer.
It's up there.
Speaker 3 (01:24:51):
I would settle for being the golf correspondent of ESPN
fifteen thirty seven hundred wlw.
Speaker 2 (01:24:57):
Okay, all right, maybe we could send you out to
Kinwood Country Club. Would just follow Willy around. If Dave
Keaton can do it for tennis, why can't I do
it for golf. That is a great point that you
have just made. Wow, So we will. We wouldn't be
that guy. We will continue to monitor. We'll just have
you walk around TPC River's Bend with like one of
(01:25:19):
those little microphone, the little what are the little backpacks
they were, with a little antenna, and you just you
can do it with random to wind here. You just
do it. And we've got Joe Schmoe from ge Aviation.
Speaker 3 (01:25:33):
Now that would be We need to get Marty and Willie,
Marty Brenneman and Willy to play around and I'll just
go out there with my phone.
Speaker 2 (01:25:39):
We'll stream it live. I think Willy would smoke him.
I don't. I don't know. If I've heard Willy can play,
Willy can play. I don't know if Marty can. Now,
Marty plays a lot, but I don't know that he's good, Yes,
which is I know a lot of people just like that.
You know, Tony a couple of years ago was scratch golfer.
Now he struggled to find a.
Speaker 3 (01:26:00):
Yeah, well, it's it's a game. You gotta you gotta
keep up, you know, to maintain it.
Speaker 2 (01:26:04):
Who was it? I was listening to an interview with
Devonte Adams. He was at the ACC Championship last week
in Lake Tahoe, and he said, the worst thing that
can ever happen to someone in golf is that they
get good at it. Yep, because then you're hooked and
you're never gonna feel like you're good enough.
Speaker 3 (01:26:21):
Lebron James has recently picked up I saw golf and it's,
you know, a little rough around the edges there, but
there there's definitely something to work with. Their golf so
great because you can take some of the greatest athletes
in the world, who are incredible at what they do
and their craft, you put a golf club in their
hand and they look like the most unordinated person you've
ever seen.
Speaker 2 (01:26:41):
Yeah, I've kind of one of my long standing hot
takes is that golf is the hardest sport to play.
I've I co signed that. Yeah, I mean like baseball, Yeah,
really hard to hit a fastball, but for like an
average person, but also like, can an average person go
shoot par at Gustin Ashneight? I chance, I don't like.
Speaker 3 (01:27:02):
I don't know if this I've heard I've heard this
stat before, but it's like, if you can shoot in
the eighties, you're in like the top like fifteen percent
of golfers in the world, right or something like that.
I mean, and you think about how many people play
golf in the world, especially you know nowadays with with
COVID and everything, the golf boom, like the second Golf
(01:27:24):
Boom kind of happened.
Speaker 2 (01:27:25):
So but it's interesting. So so what you're saying is
the course is not really being brought to his knees
right now? Not right now? I think theyre the are
the is the course bringing the golfers to their knees? Correct?
Speaker 3 (01:27:36):
And you know there was some rain this morning, yeah,
softened it up a little bit. And don't think it's
as windy today as they as they anticipated. But the
thing with these links courses is it's kind of dependent
on weather. If you put those guys out there and
you know, benign conditions in a soft golf course. You know,
guys are these you know, hot take here, but these
(01:27:57):
guys are pretty good.
Speaker 2 (01:27:58):
They're going to go out and score.
Speaker 3 (01:28:00):
So unless the wind really starts to pick up, you
might see some some low scores today, tomorrow, and on
the weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:28:07):
All right, wonderful, take a break, we'll come back. We'll
do a quick NFL update, including a surprise retirement that
just came through the wire. Will tell you about that
when we come back. Since he three to sixty ESPN
fifteen thirty k.
Speaker 1 (01:28:20):
Wise, Cincinnati, I'm a ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station,
just a.
Speaker 2 (01:28:27):
Couple minutes away from Sam Monson joining the show. In
the meantime, let's give you three quick NFL wide receiver updates.
The first is that Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison today
pled to a lesser charge, including the vehicular a vehicular
offense commonly referred to as wet reckless. Not sure exactly
(01:28:51):
what that means, but basically, his side of things has
been wrapped up, which means the NFL will now rule
on Jordan Addison's discipline. He could be suspended for up
to the first four games maybe the first three games.
Why is that important? The Bengals play the Minnesota Vikings
in Week three in Minnesota. That is important. More legal troubles.
(01:29:14):
How about Rashee Rice from the Kansas City Chiefs. He
pled guilty today to a third degree felony to two
third degree felony charges. He had a plea agreement and
was sentenced to thirty days in jail and five years
of deferred probation. So it looks like Rashee Rice got
off pretty easy on that one. And then coming through
(01:29:37):
just a few minutes ago, that wide receiver Mike Williams,
the seventh overall pick in the twenty seventeen NFL Draft,
has retired. He's been with the Los Angeles Chargers. He's
thirty years old. He informed the team last night that
he will be retiring from professional football after eight seasons.
He had a couple of thousand yard reception or receiving
(01:29:59):
seasons in there as well. By the way AFC North News,
the Ravens have officially signed edge dresher Mike Green. They're
expected to get that deal done their second round pick.
The Bears have also agreed to terms with their second
round pick, Ozzie Trapelo offensive tackle. So uh, we're slowly
but surely seeing the log jam of NFL's second round
(01:30:21):
picks be cleared up ahead of the training camp season
getting underway. All right, we'll take a break. We'll come back.
When we do, we'll talk to Sam Monson. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:30:31):

Speaker 1 (01:30:48):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 2 (01:30:52):
Hi, Hello and welcome in our number three of Sincy
three to sixty. I'm Austin Elmore. Two hours down, one
hour to go. Let's continue you the football conversation and
topic of the day, topic of the month, topic of
the summer, topic of basically everything has been Trey Hendrickson,
and I want to ask our next guest, Sam Monson,
who's been nice enough to join this show a lot
(01:31:14):
over the years, one of our good friends, now with
the thirty third team as a part of the Check
the Mic Show alongside Steve Palizolo. Sam Monson joins us. Now, Sam,
thanks for being here, man. How you doing.
Speaker 5 (01:31:26):
I'm doing well? How about you?
Speaker 2 (01:31:27):
I am wonderful. I'm going to start by asking you
our poll question today, which is this, when will Trey
Hendrickson first play for the Bengals this season week one,
after week four or week eight or not at all?
How do you feel about that?
Speaker 11 (01:31:44):
Yeah, I mean, I feel like they have to get
this done eventually. I would still lean towards week one,
But the longer this draws out, obviously, the worst it
gets for everybody involved. I don't think it's like a
normal quote unquote hold out or contract dispute in that
I think this is one of the few cases where,
(01:32:05):
you know, oftentimes players will dig their heels in and
they'll hold out, or they'll say they won't play under
a new deal, and most of the time it's not
really true.
Speaker 4 (01:32:14):
You know, it's it's.
Speaker 11 (01:32:14):
Posing, it's a bluff. I think it's true with Trey Henderson.
I don't think he's going to play if they're not
willing to do kind of what they said they would
do all along and rework his deal and get it
to where he thinks it should be.
Speaker 2 (01:32:29):
What makes you think that Trey is different from some
of those other.
Speaker 5 (01:32:32):
Players A couple of reasons.
Speaker 11 (01:32:35):
Number One, you know, he's he's made a lot of
money already. I mean, he's had a big money contract.
He hit open market free agency, so that you know,
this is not like it would be if it was
his previous deal where he was searching for the first
big payday. Number Two, I think because of the way
the Bengals have sort of treated this in terms of
(01:32:56):
it's not like this is not sort of the first
time they to have pulled the rug out from under him.
That kind of argued him away from the table the
first time around instead of said, look, we'll take care
of you this time next year. And now the rug
is being pulled out from under him, and then I
think he just strikes me as the kind of character
who you know, means what he says in this kind
(01:33:18):
of regard. He's not somebody that wants to go public
with this stuff, wants to, you know, take care of
his business in the public sphere. The fact that he's
felt compelled or forced to do that, I do think
he means it when he says things like that, things like, look,
I only want what's right, and I'm not prepared to
(01:33:38):
play on the one year deal that they have scheduled
for me.
Speaker 2 (01:33:41):
He's not the only one that's gone public with his
frustrations this offseason. So has Shamar Stewart. That's an entirely
different saga. They also have a second round pick, Demetrius
Knight Junior, that's not yet signed. Among those three, Trey,
Demetrius Knight and Schamar, what should the priority list be
for the Bengal as they go into training camp? How
should they knock those three out?
Speaker 11 (01:34:04):
I think Trey Henderson is the most important one.
Speaker 4 (01:34:07):
I mean, that's the one.
Speaker 11 (01:34:08):
Where you need this guy. He's your best defensive player.
He was your best defensive player a year ago. You know,
you made the big moves this offseason in terms of
keeping the band together on offense with Jamar Chase and
t Higgins and you know, keeping Joe Burrow happy. Now's
the time to make sure the defense has got something
attached to it. And Trey Hendrickson is that guy. And Okay,
(01:34:29):
it's a little bit of a complicated deal because of
his age, but he you know, he doesn't want Miles
Garrett money. There is room to make this happen and
keep your best defensive player in the building and a
guy who ultimately is an elite level pass rusher the
second round pick. You know, that's something I think that's
going to come. It's they're not the only team. This
(01:34:50):
is one where you know, the Bengals are not the
bad guy here. This is the entire league effectively is
being held up in the second round because of the
the contract that that the Texan signed with their second
round pick at the top, and it's kind of it's
messed everybody up. So yeah, that one I think will
get done eventually. They just need some dominoes to fall first.
(01:35:11):
And then the Schumar Stewart one is very tricky because, again,
on the one hand, you can see Cincinnati's point of view,
there are teams that have this language in their contracts,
but it's difficult to break precedent.
Speaker 10 (01:35:25):
You know.
Speaker 11 (01:35:25):
It's one thing to have that as this is the
thing we always do, take it or leave it. It's
another thing when you're trying to put it in one
year and it wasn't there.
Speaker 4 (01:35:34):
The year before.
Speaker 11 (01:35:35):
And so from his perspective and his agent's perspective, they
are quite reasonably saying, well, you know, why wasn't it
there a year ago for a guy that was drafted
lower than we were. You know, why would you make
that precedent now and make why would we and you
sign up for it when the guy last year didn't
have to and the guy that before that didn't have to.
So that's that's one. I think it's tough because it's
(01:35:59):
it's a legitimate staredown, you know. I think you can
see the case from both sides in that regard the
other two. You know that the second rounder is not
really their fault. And then the Trey Henderson thing, I
think that's one where they do need the cave like
Henderson has.
Speaker 4 (01:36:13):
The point there.
Speaker 2 (01:36:14):
Yeah, I'm with you. The thing that's so annoying about
the Shamar Stewart side is I think both sides could
they're both right and they're both wrong kind of at
the same time. You talked about Trey's personality of maybe,
you know, standing on his word of sitting out games.
What would you guess right now would be the end
game for the Shamar Stewart situation.
Speaker 11 (01:36:36):
Yeah, I mean this is a fascinating one because it's
a whole different world now with than it used to
be in the past in terms of the money that's
been made already in college and can be made. I
think there's a whole different world now of players having
the capacity to sit at for a year that didn't
necessarily in the past. You know, that was a thing
(01:36:58):
that wasn't always on the table. Two players who did
not have the financial resources to play hardball and to
draw a line in the sand and say I'm prepared
to do nothing for the next twelve months, you know,
to work out at home, you know, or at my college,
not play football. You just prepare for next year re
end of the draft. You know you couldn't do that
(01:37:19):
financially in the past. I think you probably can now.
And this is really the first time it's been tested
in anger in terms of staring down the NFL team
and saying this is not a bluff. I am prepared
to walk away from the NFL this year. I can
you know, I can live fine for the next twelve
months working out and preparing for next year's draft if
(01:37:39):
you're not willing to take this off the table.
Speaker 2 (01:37:43):
Talking with Sam Monson at Sam Monson NFL co host
Check the Mic podcast with Steve Palazolo. Let's say that
September seventh rolls around and all these deals are done
and finished and cleaned up. The Bengals go to Cleveland
with Trey Hendrickson, Shamar Stewart, Demetrius Knight. The receivers are
taking care of this season. If that's the case, what's
(01:38:06):
the ceiling for the twenty twenty five Bengals.
Speaker 11 (01:38:10):
I think the ceiling for this team. The ceiling for
the Bengals is, you know, they're one of a few
teams that have a quarterback that's good enough that the
ceiling is always super Bowl or at least Super Bowl contender.
I'm going to run once you hit the playoffs. I
think that's true for the Bengals, it's true for the Bills,
It's true for the Chiefs. You know, they've already shown
they can be in that category. Obviously, last year was
(01:38:31):
not a good season, but and they came short of
making the playoffs entirely.
Speaker 5 (01:38:35):
But if they made it in.
Speaker 11 (01:38:37):
There's not a team in the NFL that would have
wanted to see Cincinnati in last year's postseason. You know,
they could easily have shocked any of those AFC contending teams.
If they had made the playoffs last year the way
they were playing late in the year. So I think
that remains their ceiling. You know, it doesn't matter really
how it happens. It doesn't matter how they get there.
If they make the playoffs, this is a team that's
(01:38:59):
talented and dangerous enough to beat anybody.
Speaker 2 (01:39:01):
Are the Bengals putting too much faith in the fact
that Al Golden's just going to fix everything on defense?
Speaker 11 (01:39:09):
I don't think they're putting too much faith in that.
Do that's a talented defense. It shouldn't have been as
bad as it was a year ago. So I think
you're going to see you know, there's there's an extent
to which just running it back again, just having another
year will have an impact and we'll see a better
performance from that defense than we saw last year. There's
(01:39:30):
also an argument that, you know, change for change sake
when it comes to coaching, and just changing the voice
in the room will have an impact as well, And
I think those two things together are really what they're
relying on. Look, number one, we should not have been
as bad as we were last season. At number two,
we are going to change it up. We are going
(01:39:50):
to shift what we're asking from you what we're looking
to do, so I would expect that defense to be
significantly better. I mean we're only a few years removed
from you know, lou Anarumo being one of the darlings
in the NFL in terms of the work he was
doing on that defense. Obviously there's been some turnover, there's
been some personnel changes, but a lot of those players
are still there.
Speaker 2 (01:40:12):
Yeah, yeah, you're exactly right. And guys that Al Golden
has a little bit of experience with as well. His
name is Sam Monson from the thirty third Team and
the Check the Mic Show. Sam, where can people follow
along and listen to all your coverage you got coming
up for the NFL this season.
Speaker 11 (01:40:27):
Yeah, as you said, Check the Mike Mic is the
name of the show, So either wherever you get your
podcasts or on YouTube you can find us.
Speaker 2 (01:40:35):
Awesome, Sam, Thanks for making some time for you. Get
to chat with you again, man, anytime.
Speaker 11 (01:40:39):
Take it easy.
Speaker 2 (01:40:40):
That is Sam Monson from thirty third Team. Yeah, that's
good stuff. He's right. I think we do sometimes forget
the amount of talent that is on the defense, like
or talent that's supposed to be on the defense. And
young talent and top one hundred picks that are on
the defense. My biggest fee, though, is that question that
(01:41:01):
I just asked Sam. Are they putting a little bit
too much faith in the idea that Al Golden's going
to fix everything now? I was also the guy who
was saying they need to move on from Marion Hobby,
they need to move on from a lot of the
different coaches on the defensive side of the ball, like
that whole defense needs a breath of fresh air. And
(01:41:24):
I think even just starting with that, with the marginal
replacements of a TJ. Slayton and an Orin Burke's just
starting with that, you're slightly better. Are you that much better?
I don't know. If you get hurt, if there's injuries,
I think it becomes a very slippery slope. Now, if
(01:41:48):
Al Golden in and of himself, can just get this
unit to be a little bit more consistent. I saw
stat the other day, and if Golden can get them
to limit these ginormous chunk plays. I saw a stat
the other day. I forget where I saw it. I
want to say it was Warren Sharp again because he's
great with all these stats, but it was the net
(01:42:09):
explosive play number for each team, which is the number
of explosive plays they had on offense in the number
of explosive plays they had on defense. And what does
that number equal out to. Think of how good the
Bengals were on offense last year. Think of how amazing
Burrow was. Think of Chase winning the Triple Crown, the
(01:42:33):
deep balls, the screen passes that went seventy yards, Burrow
off platform, running around picking up a thirty yard first down.
Think of all those explosive plays that the Bengals had
on offense. They in that number in that category were
minus one, which means they surrendered one more explosive play
(01:42:57):
on defense and they made on offense. That is insane
when you think about how good that offense was. That's
the thing. Can you get off the field on just
two third downs? Kind of go back to what was
it Moe was doing the punts for pizza last year.
(01:43:18):
So if the Bengals can get punt for get the
defense to punt four times or something. I forget what
the number was, but like it almost feels like it
could be that simple. Could be the difference from them
missing the playoffs and being the one or two seed
in the AFC. But I feel like that defense is
a really slippery slope, and we're putting a lot on
(01:43:39):
the idea of Trey and Schamar and the impact if
that's gonna happen. But I worry about the depth in
the secondary, both at corner and at safety, because if
they get hurt, I don't know. I hope the defensive
line is more productive, which in general, as a cause
(01:43:59):
and an effect relationship, will create less pressure on the
back end, less work that those guys have to do,
less time that they have to cover receivers, and it'll
get better. But one of my biggest fears is that
we're putting a little too much hope in the idea
that Al Golden's gonna fix stuff, and a little too
(01:44:20):
much hope in the idea that well, Frank Pollock's gone,
so everything will be better. Now that being said, we
did see Scott Peters offensive line last year in New
England start. A guy by the name of Michael Jordan.
You might remember him, a former Ohio State Buckeye, a
former Bengal. He was the guy who got blown up
so bad Burrow destroyed his knee as rookie season and
(01:44:44):
the Bengals couldn't touch Jacobe Brissett in week one, so
maybe there is something too Scott Peters in that strike
technique that he has. Phone lines are open for the
rest of the show. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. Can also tweet it me at audio more
auty E L M O R E. We'll take a break,
We'll come back. Our three brought to you by Penn
(01:45:06):
Station on the Home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:45:08):
Fact on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 4 (01:45:17):
What is this?
Speaker 2 (01:45:18):
Is this chance the rapper? Yeah? This is a mister Wives?
This is who mister Wives? Is that the guy who
was at the Coldplay concert last night? It might have been.
Speaker 10 (01:45:29):
No.
Speaker 4 (01:45:30):
I like this.
Speaker 2 (01:45:31):
It's a band with a female lead singer. They're really good.
Check them out. O all right, mister Wives. Uh okay,
all right now. Occasionally, Drew, I'll steal one of your
bumpers and I'll play it and people seem to love that.
Oh wow, uh huh, very nice, which tells me that
I don't have the same taste in music as our listeners.
Speaker 20 (01:45:52):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:45:52):
In the what's that band? You love? The Grateful Dead? Yes,
those ones are very popular. Yep. Grateful that one al
THEA ALTHEA earlier in the show. Yes, Jeff loves that one.
Jeff and Virginia. I think he's a deadhead too. That
won't surprise me. I think you and Jeff could maybe
be friends, and I've heard him. I wouldn't disagree. Jeff
(01:46:17):
is a good guy. Yeah he's He's a deadhead, just
like you. Quick update, real quick. Kevin Denka from f
C Cincinnati. He did not play in the match last night.
He picked up an injury when they were playing against
Columbus on Saturday. He made a post on his Twitter
account that says, Hi, fans, I'm forced to take a
short break after picking up an injury on the pitch.
(01:46:38):
I'll be away for a little while to recover properly,
heal up and come back stronger than ever. Huge thanks
to the team, the fans and everyone for the constant support.
Can't wait to be back out there with you. Wall
So that is from Kevin Dink, the excellent striker for
f C Cincinnati. I'm gonna make that today's Postman Law
injury report post Law eight four to four Postman Injured.
(01:47:03):
Postman delivers also from a baseball standpoint, which is what
we're supposed to be talking about with the Postman Law
Injury Report. Au Haaneo Suarez did get X rays on
his hand. He was hit on the like the pinky
slash bottom of his hand late in the All Star
Game on Tuesday. Got X rays and they came back negative.
So I'm sure he's a little bit sore, but sores
(01:47:25):
did not break any bones in that hand, so that
is obviously good news. And he is expected to be
a trade target at the All Star or at the
trade deadline coming up at the end of this month
and going into August. That's our Postman Law Injury Report.
Injured Postman delivers eight four to four Postman post m
a n I want to finish up the Trey Hendrickson conversation.
(01:47:49):
I heard this interview that Chris Collinsworth did with Sam Hubbard,
and you know, obviously Chris is based here in Cincinnati.
Pro Football Focus is based here in since and I'm
kind of wondering and curious to see what the future
of Sam Hubbard will look like if he wants to
stick around football in the sense of coaching or consulting
(01:48:13):
or something along those lines or if he wants to
get into the media or what exactly it's going to be.
But Sam has friends in high places, and Chris Collinsworth
is obviously one of them. And he did an interview
I think it's about thirty minutes long that I found
on YouTube with Chris and Sam Hubbard, and he asked
him about a bunch of different stuff. He asked him
about the Super Bowl, he asked him about his career
and his life coming up and when he knew it
(01:48:35):
was time to retire. And he also asked him about
Trey Hendrickson and how they'd been seen recently training together.
Even though Sam's done playing, he still was training with
Sam with Trey Hendrickson, And I thought this answer, it's
about a minute long, was pretty interesting about from Sam
(01:48:55):
Hubbard about Trey Hendrickson, why he's been so good for
as long as he's been, and where he's at right now.
Take a listen to Hubbard on Hendrickson. Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 29 (01:49:04):
I think it's just a testament of what doing you
know your craft and living the right way can compound
over time. Like Trey eats perfectly, sleeps perfectly, constantly works
on his game, is obsessed with football, and you know,
you do that your first couple of years, you can
be pretty good.
Speaker 2 (01:49:21):
You do that for what is it, eight years straight,
and you know it's old. I mean not for him.
Speaker 29 (01:49:28):
He's he's wired where he could do it all day
and that's what makes him special. And to do seventeen
and a half sacks back to back at you know
that late in your career, and you know, I still
have full confidence he'll be able to do it again
because I'm training with him right now, even though I'm
not getting ready for campy Is. He reached out to me,
(01:49:49):
one of the training partners while he's in town. I
was like, hey, you know, I still got to stay healthy,
so let's get after it. So it's like old times.
Speaker 2 (01:49:57):
That right there is why I think think I disagree
with Sam Monson. It's why I think I disagree with
the idea that Trey will actually sit out games like
I do think that Trey is a different type of person.
I think he's got a different personality. He's just a
I don't want to call him an odd ball, but
(01:50:19):
he just kind of rocks to the beat of his
own drum, right, and maybe we have he's kind of
blended into the background in terms of like his personality
in the locker room and comparing it to others and
maybe not being as much of a leader because Sam
had that role and other guys on the defense had
that role. But like that's sort of regiment and discipline
(01:50:42):
and focus on your craft. I do think Sam's right
when you do that over and over and over again,
that's kind of the fruits of your labor that you
get seventeen and a half sacks over the course of
your career. It's also probably why Sam is adamant that
he's not going to fall off even as he gets
older because of the longevity of taking care of himself
(01:51:04):
and his body. But the love for the game of football,
the desire to play, the desire to compete. We always
laugh and joke about blackout Trey and how he will
just completely lose his marbles on the field like that.
To me is the difference here. I don't know that
(01:51:25):
he's somebody that would put money or a contract dispute
ahead of his teammates and actually playing the game of football.
I think Trey has a lot of respect for the game,
and while I do think he's very serious about that,
and I think we've seen a side of him this
year that maybe we haven't seen before. I don't necessarily
(01:51:49):
think that that means Trey's not going to play football.
He's said I'm not going to play on this sixteen
million night that I'm currently under, and I get that.
I can understand why he'd be upset. But at the
same time, if this is bothering him that much, he
(01:52:10):
could and by the way, he's made a ton of
money in the NFL, he could play out that deal
and just kind of be done with it next year
and kind of move on to something else. And I
guess the idea of a franchise tag and all that.
But if I'm Trey, wouldn't you at least be like,
(01:52:34):
all right, let's get this over with. If it really
came down to it, I'm gonna play. I don't want to.
I'll prove it. And then yesterday's price is not today's price.
Much like Jamar Chase. But that's the thing, like you
have to the thing with Jamar. You know why it
works so well for Jamar he came well and won
the freaking Triple Crown. He was unbelievable. It maybe it
(01:52:58):
shouldn't be that way, but it almost feels like Trey
has to do that too, And I just don't see
him as a guy that's gonna sacrifice his love for
the game of football and playing the game of football
in another year of not playing football. I just don't
see that happening. I think I said the priority list
(01:53:21):
is Trey and then Demetrius and then Chamar. As far
as these defensive contracts that need to get done, that's
the order in which I think they will get done. So,
if I'm gonna answer the pole question, the Revive Fitness
Systems dot Com pole question, I'm gonna say week one.
I'm gonna say Trey plays in week one. I think
there's a better chance Trey plays in week one than
(01:53:41):
Chamar plays in week one. And I think there's a
better chance Trey and Demetrius both play in week one.
But I think that's the order in which those deals
are gonna get done. I guess you could probably put
me now that all the second round picture starting to sign.
Maybe you put Demetrius's number one, But I think Trey
will get done sooner rather than later. Again, no reason
(01:54:01):
for that other than just kind of a gut feeling.
We'll take a break, we'll come back. Fox Sports put
an all time Reds lineup together. I'm curious what you
think of it. Five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. ESPN fifteen thirty. Show's called
(01:54:23):
since three sixty. My name's Austin Elborn. Happy to be
with you. About ten minutes from right now, Joe Burrow's
new best friend, Moe Egger, is going to join us
for quick Hits. Moe's on the air this afternoon from
three to six pm. As we know, it's list season
and it's also the All Star break in Major League Baseball.
(01:54:46):
But I saw something from Fox Sports. They did an
all time Reds lineup. Now, we've joked around with stuff
like this in the past, but it's always funny with
the national Cindy CA national group kind of gets their
hands on it and put together a lineup. Now this
isn't a batting order, but this is the how Fox
(01:55:08):
Sports would put together an all time Red's lineup. You
ready for this? Here we go. Left field Frank Robinson,
center field, Eric Davis, right field George Foster. Hard to
argue with that third base Pete Rose shortstop, Barry Larkin
(01:55:31):
second base, Joe Morgan first base, Joey Vado catcher, Johnny Bench,
dh Tony Perez, and their starting pitcher is Epo Rixie,
with their top relief pitcher being Danny Graves. They do
(01:55:53):
a manager of as well, which obviously Sparky Anderson. I
don't know that anybody would disagree with Sparky, but true,
when you see that list, is there anybody that immediately
sticks out to you as a glaring omission from the
Reds all time lineup? I maybe this is just the
youth in me, but I think I would have gone
(01:56:14):
a rold As Chapman. We're on the same page there,
because when I first saw this, I was like, I
love Danny Graves, but he's not a roled As Chapman.
Speaker 3 (01:56:22):
Yes, so that that would be my big one, honestly.
The starting pitcher. You know, I don't really know much
about Rexia, but the starting pitcher. There aren't a lot
of plentiful selections there, uh sure. In the article for
this they have an honorable mentions down at the bottom
of the page, and they have Bucky Walters, Paul Derringer
(01:56:44):
and Noodles Han Noodles and Jim O'Toole as four honorable
mentions for starting pitcher.
Speaker 2 (01:56:50):
Yeah, like all those guys are great. Epa Rixie was
obviously great and maybe statistically might be the best. But
as far as I'm concerned, Like when I think of
a Reds starting pitcher, the first person I think of
is Jim Maloney for whatever reason, Like he was just
(01:57:11):
a beast, and I don't know if he was nearly
as Dominat made. He's an All Star one time with
the Reds back in the sixties, but he's got a
career war with the Reds of thirty four point four.
I mean, this dude was a monster eleven years with
the Reds a three point one six era, through tons
and tons of innings. I mean, what was this in
(01:57:34):
I saw this? He had fourteen complete games in nineteen
sixty five, pretty good, eleven and sixty four, thirteen and
sixty three. I mean, I know it is a different
era of baseball. Jim Maloney was a beast of a
starting pitcher. Johnny Cuato had a pretty good run. Yes
he did. I'm trying to think. I mean, you could
go Trevor Bauer. He did win a Cy young, and
(01:57:58):
he was dominant in twenty twenty. I don't want to
make people mad like Shane Gillis, but I mean you
could have that conversation, couldn't you.
Speaker 3 (01:58:08):
Yeah, I think you could because he's the only cy
young winner in Red's history as far as I think
that's correct. But I think they're looking more for, you know,
the longevity of playing with the Reds. He was here
for what two seasons?
Speaker 4 (01:58:22):
Maybe?
Speaker 2 (01:58:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:58:23):
So.
Speaker 3 (01:58:24):
But just to kind of round out the other honorable
mentions here a rold As chap the aforementioned E world
As Chapman, Rob Dibble for of course, Friend of the Show,
Brandon Phillips second base, Station Stepsione at short, and then
Jay Bruce Vada Pinson, Ken Griffy and Adam Dunn Or
rounded out the honorable mentions at the bottom of that article.
Speaker 2 (01:58:47):
I think Ken Griffy should maybe be on this list
sor I think, honestly, I think you could make an
argument for both of them, agreed, Junior and Senior because
I think this might be a hot time and I whatever,
Ken Griffy Junior is one of the most talented, if
not the most talented baseball player that's ever played the game.
(01:59:07):
I think he's the single most talented Red that has
ever played for the franchise. Now, obviously he wasn't nearly
the player he was in Seattle here, and injuries hampered that,
but I don't know how you don't put him in
your lineup. And then if you ever just look at
what Ken Griffy did senior, that dude could play. Oh yeah,
I mean that is as a professional hitter, goodfielder, speed,
(01:59:32):
could steal bases and did it for a long time.
And then of course the big donkey, I mean that
dude in today's day, today's day and age, he would
be Kyle Schwarber. Oh yeah, we didn't even talk about
that today, the idea that Kyle Schwarber potentially being a
Red next year. Did you see that quote? I did not.
So he was asked at the All Star Game by
(01:59:53):
somebody from the Philadelphia Inquirer about, you know, playing for
the Reds and if they were to offer him a
contract next year, and he talks about how it would
be really really cool to be able to play for
your hometown team. Now my hopes are up. I know,
he's like, oh, that would be awesome, Like I think
it would be cool to play for your hometown team,
and growing up in Cincinnati, you just thought that's how
(02:00:14):
you fall in love with baseball and blah blah blah
blah blah. And I'm thinking, oh my gosh, yes, Kyle,
I mean that dude would hit sixty homers if he
played here eighty one games. Yeah, he might hit sixty
this year he's played in Philadelphia. As I said on.
Speaker 3 (02:00:29):
Yesterday's show, pay him all the money, make him the mayor,
do whatever his demands are, make sure they are met,
because that guy at Great American Ballpark would be one
heck of a ticket to grab for eighty one games
of the season.
Speaker 2 (02:00:41):
And it doesn't even matter like he hits lefties too, right, Yeah,
you know what I mean. He might hit lefties better.
My biggest question about sports are about baseball in general,
is how with all the data and information and tools
that we have at our disposal, how we can't get
left handed hitters to hit left handed pitching better. I
(02:01:03):
do not understand that whatsoever about baseball. It has never
made sense to me, Like with pitching machines and VR
and all this data that you have about swings and
launch angles and arm angles and movement. How is there
not something to make people left handers better at hitting
(02:01:27):
left handers. It's one of the to me, one of
the biggest mysteries that I don't understand. Yeah, and everybody
I asked, nobody seems to have a good answer. Oh, well,
they just don't do it enough. Well, Kyle s Warber
doesn't face a lefty every time he comes to plate right,
you know what I mean? Yeah, Oh yeah, I know
exactly what you mean.
Speaker 3 (02:01:43):
And it is interesting and I think it's I think
we've gone so far into the platooning of lefties when
a team throws a lefty that you know, these guys
just aren't you know, hitting off the pitching the left
handed pitching machine, or taking batting practice from a left
handed point. It can only get yourself far right. You
gotta face it live to get better. And you know,
(02:02:05):
and Schwarber just, you know, kind of has the gift of,
you know, hitting lefties very very well.
Speaker 2 (02:02:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:02:11):
And to circle back to Kangervey Senior, we talked about
how long he did the thing. His nineteen ninety season,
beast he played, he had one hundred and forty at
bats in nineteen ninety He hit three hundred with a
seven sixty seven ops at age forty.
Speaker 2 (02:02:30):
That dude could just that is incredible. He could just
flat out play I love the Griffies. Oh yeah, I
love my favorites. I also love Moe Egger. And Moe's
gonna join this, guys, because he's up this afternoon from
three to six, and now he's got a new best
friend by the name of Joe Burrow. I'm gonna ask
him about that and what's on his show and more.
(02:02:51):
That's next ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (02:02:53):
Thirty thirty, Cincinnati's sports station. It's time for since sixty
quick hits.
Speaker 2 (02:03:03):
Yes, indeed it is. We're looking for moh We found him,
Joe Burrow's new best friend, Moe Egger. Now on the show.
Speaker 21 (02:03:08):
Hi, Mo, you know what you didn't see in that
SI styl and what's the issue that he's in Sports
Time Style and Substance. My relationship with him was edited
out of the story. Really, yeah, I wanted Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:03:24):
I didn't need the extra attention. So you hosted a
Q and A with Joe Burrow last night?
Speaker 4 (02:03:29):
He did?
Speaker 2 (02:03:30):
Now this is Is this the second time you've met
Joe because you interviewed him when he was drafted. Yeah,
have you talked to him since? Is this like the
first time we had him on the show. We were
the first show to have him on. Yes, which made
some people in this building big big man. I bet
it did, big mad, big big man mad. Can I
(02:03:50):
tell a quick story that has nothing to do with this, Yes,
I love it when you do.
Speaker 21 (02:03:54):
We once remember when Andy Kennedy, the former UC interim
coade I know who that is, got in trouble with
the cab driver. Yeah, and at the time I was
on in the morning and I found the cab driver
and had him on. And right before I said I
was going to have him on, our boss at the
time said to me, Hey, do you mind letting the
show down the hall?
Speaker 4 (02:04:14):
Do it?
Speaker 2 (02:04:14):
Oh my gosh. I didn't go so well anyway. Yeah,
more things changed the more they stayed the same.
Speaker 21 (02:04:21):
So Joe Burrow appeared on our show the day after
the draft, and that was the only time we've been
lucky enough to have him on. He doesn't, you know,
do a lot of that sort of stuff, which is okay.
So that was the second time that I've had a
one on one conversation with him. This event we had
for body Armor last night for a lot of their
incentivized employees will put it.
Speaker 2 (02:04:43):
And I said to him, like, you actually came on
with me. I asked you why he didn't go to UC,
and he just chuckled because I did.
Speaker 21 (02:04:48):
And I remember the fans got big man because I
remember answered the question. Honestly, He's like, didn't think I
could win a title there? Now by then, the UC
program was really on the up and up by the
time I asked him that question, But like, U see, fans.
Speaker 2 (02:05:02):
Got big mad at me. And I'm like, wait a minute,
how do you not ask that?
Speaker 4 (02:05:05):
Right?
Speaker 21 (02:05:06):
If you're me big bear cat fan, right, how do
you not ask that question? You did your job.
Speaker 2 (02:05:11):
I did my job. What did you learn about Joe
last night? Anything that you didn't know?
Speaker 21 (02:05:15):
He knows how to play the piano better than they
showed on the TV show. Okay, so I think did
he play for everyone?
Speaker 2 (02:05:23):
He did not, But I asked him.
Speaker 21 (02:05:24):
I'm like, cause I'm like, you know, are there are
there parts like about your life that people And this
was a private event and I was lucky enough to
be asked to do it by body Armor, and so
there was only like thirty maybe thirty forty people in
the room. But I asked him about, like, you know, quarterback,
we saw this side of you. Are there other sides
that we haven't seen yet that you would be willing
to share? And he's like, well, the piano thing's actually
(02:05:46):
a big deal. He's like, I can play better. I'm
a better piano player than they showed me that they
showed on the show, because he said, like, all the
songs that I know are Kanye West songs. But he's like,
you know, remember they shot that before the season last year.
Since then, Kanye Last has like turned into he's lost
(02:06:06):
it a polarizing figure. Sure, my word's not his. And
he's like, they didn't want to show me playing Kanye
West songs. And he's like an understandably so, but he's
like I could play because I said, like there are
people who can play the piano. I can play the piano,
but I can't play a song, right, I can't sit
down and play a song, but like I know what
the notes are. I could play. Mary had a little lamb.
(02:06:27):
He's like, no, I could play songs. He's like they
didn't show that on the show. Interesting thought that was interesting. Yeah,
that is interesting. What's also interesting is how FC Cincinnati
owns Messi. They do like broke the record or broke
the streak, which was a record streak for Messi in
kind of a dominant performance bounce back. I was really
happy that Messi got a chance to watch Evander up close.
(02:06:48):
Yeah right, Yes, the league MVP of Ander.
Speaker 2 (02:06:51):
Yeah right.
Speaker 21 (02:06:52):
So I want Pat Noonan and Chris Albright to sell
themselves out to consult teams like the Reds and Bengals. Yes, right,
the best coach in the best GM in the city
both work for f C Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (02:07:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 21 (02:07:04):
I don't really think that's arguable. Terry Francona might have
something to say about that, But the worst collection of
work here so far has been okay, f C Cincinnati, Man,
it's remarkable. You know, they got through so much off
season stuff, They traded away a guy who is the
MVP two years ago, and now they have a chance
(02:07:24):
to win a championship. They bounce back really nicely last
night dominated inner Miami CF and a point out of
the supporter shield race.
Speaker 2 (02:07:32):
Also did it without Kevin Dinke. That's right, banged up.
I think the best way to describe FC Cincinnati is
that they are smart and aggressive, and if you're smart
and aggressive, you're probably gonna be good.
Speaker 21 (02:07:43):
What's interesting to me, You know a lot more about
soccer than I do. You know a lot more about
most things than I do. That's true, But it always
feels like when they get a player from outside, like
Kai Kamara, like the dude automatically looks like he's been
there forever.
Speaker 2 (02:07:55):
Yeah, right, it's true.
Speaker 21 (02:07:56):
I mean they've they've made a number of like in
season act positions over the years using soccer transfer rules
that I don't understand.
Speaker 2 (02:08:04):
Nobody does.
Speaker 21 (02:08:05):
But every time it feels to me like every time
they acquire somebody from outside, especially during the season, it
just the guy fits like a glove. The transition is seamless,
which is coaching, it's team culture. It's also identifying the
right guys by the front office.
Speaker 2 (02:08:20):
And on top of that, a guy like Acosta leaves, yes,
just on the opposite guy leaves and it doesn't affect it.
That is Lucho Acosta having a good year in Dallas.
No clue. Nobody watches FC Dallas. They stink, well, I
think they stink, and they're like the sixth most popular
team in that region.
Speaker 21 (02:08:37):
I would imagine. So, yeah, got five goals, one assists. Okay,
hey stinks? All right, Yeah he's no good. Paige Becker's
is a bigger deal in Dallas.
Speaker 2 (02:08:45):
Yes, she should be. That's not a joke. No, she
really is. Caylen Clark, by the way, got hurt again again.
That stinks for them. Did you watch the SPS? Do
you watch the I used to watch him religiously last
night was I watched twenty five minutes of it, the
most I've watched in years.
Speaker 21 (02:09:02):
So I'm not an sb's guy because I don't really understand,
but I wanted to watch this morning Oscar Robertson, Yes,
because I think it's cool.
Speaker 2 (02:09:08):
He got the Arthur Ash Award for Courage.
Speaker 21 (02:09:11):
I think he could have gotten the Arthur Ash Award
for Courage just for some of the crap he went
through as a black man at the University of Cincinnati.
But what he did for NBA free agency is significant.
And I like Shane Gillis. You do like Shane Gillis.
I don't know that there is a worse room to
play right for a stand up comedian than a room
full of athletes who are used to being worshiped and
(02:09:32):
not made fun of it.
Speaker 2 (02:09:32):
That's what I said. Like last night, I said on
Twitter that he bombed. Yeah he didn't bomb to people
watching at home, the joke he's bombed to the people
in the room.
Speaker 21 (02:09:40):
He bombed in the room.
Speaker 2 (02:09:41):
Yes, yeah, yeah, not all the jokes landed. But that's fine.
Speaker 21 (02:09:45):
But if you put him in a room of normal people,
he's getting last. That is a thankless job because it's
filled with people, like everybody loves the norm McDonald Espy's,
which he paid homage to. If you watch that YouTube clip,
those athletes are not happy. Yeah, those are people who
are not used to being made fun of, which is
why I love it, right, I love the nerd picking
(02:10:07):
on the cool kid.
Speaker 2 (02:10:08):
I've gotten to the point as I get older that
stuff like that makes me uncomfortable, to the point where
I can't watch it.
Speaker 21 (02:10:14):
So I love it because I get a kick out
of watching people who don't get made fun of get
made fun of.
Speaker 2 (02:10:20):
Because in life, you know what it's like, there's two
types of people.
Speaker 21 (02:10:25):
I remember when Bob Trumpy came back to work here
a little bit and I got a sign to like
do some stuff with him, and as like a twenty
year old kid I would just pick on everybody, and
Bob Trumpy was fun as hell, right, And people were like,
I can't believe you said that to him, and.
Speaker 2 (02:10:39):
I'm like, screw it.
Speaker 21 (02:10:40):
Just a guy like he has a sense of humor
about himself, but then you meet people no sense of
humor about him about themselves. I love taking people who
are typically like you can't make fun of them and
making fun of them. The SP's gives a comedian a
chance to do that, but the atmosphere of the room
sucks as a result. What's on the Moagger Radio show
this after? We're gonna ask a question? You know you've
been talking about Demetrius Night, Yes, right, the Dark Knight,
(02:11:02):
the Dark Knight, which is something that frankly, not a
lot of people have been talking about really until we
think two more second round picks signed today since we've
been on the air. There is a question about this team.
I don't think anybody has asked it all off season.
I'm gonna ask it today.
Speaker 2 (02:11:15):
Let's go.
Speaker 21 (02:11:16):
I'm gonna ask it today. Can the Reds get out
of their rut? I say that now they had a
winning homestand can they get out of their rut? Starting
tomorrow in New York. And what if they don't and
we have to stop ranking quarterbacks. Why I have a
new way to rank quarterbacks. I have a new way
to rank quarterbacks. Fantastic, and we're going to apply with
(02:11:38):
that new way of ranking quarterbacks and old criteria. They
don't make that make sense. Do you have any guests
on the show today? Today is guest free. Oh, it's
a little bit of a tradition on this show. Let's
go the Thursday of the All Star Break guest free. Okay,
all right, yeah, that's coming up from this afternoon and
the Sports Cincinnati five.
Speaker 10 (02:12:00):
Or not.
Speaker 2 (02:12:03):
Give us some ud a great job keeping me updated
on the Open. You know he's a big golf game
is Yeah. He wants to just go around to golf
courses and report line. I think is a great idea.
Whereas McElroy, he was a shot back earlier. That's why
I put my money on not doing well. I don't
see him on a leader board. I don't know if
he's doing well.
Speaker 21 (02:12:17):
All right, you make a Scottie shuffler admitting like you're
a golf When I win, it's not that big of
a deal. It doesn't bring me much joy. This is
the first TI I'm hearing it. So did an interview
ESPN published. He talked about job like golf, like it's
his job. He talked about like, yeah, when I win,
and I'm paraphrasing him here, I win, it's like cool
for two minutes, and then it's like, yeah, life goes on.
(02:12:38):
I've heard so people are ripping on him like, oh,
he really doesn't love golf.
Speaker 2 (02:12:42):
Clearly he does.
Speaker 21 (02:12:43):
I've heard so many championship winning athletes talk about winning
that way like it's awesome. And then it's like, now what, Yeah,
I do that every day at six o'clock. What How
what do I do with myself? Yeah, that's a relatable feeling.
Speaker 2 (02:12:57):
All right. The Moegger Show coming up next. I'll work
on I'll see if I get a take off.
Speaker 21 (02:13:02):
Also, I'm gonna see if if if I can stave
off a potential cold just by the scent of Hal's
throat drops filling this room.
Speaker 2 (02:13:10):
Yeah, it's a pleasant one. Ear for you. What you
maybe put it under a candle or something like that.
All Right, The Bohagger Show is next. We're late. Thanks
for listening. Thanks to Drew for producing. This has been
since he three sixty, ESPN fifteen thirty
