Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is back on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
All right, welcome back Cincy three sixty the Friday Football
Frenzy on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Let's cut
right to it. A man that really needs no introduction,
but I'll introduce him. Two hundred and four receptions, three
thousand and three receiving yards, twenty five total receiving touchdowns.
How about twenty eight hundred and sixteen return yards in
another five touchdowns, so many more accolades. But from now

(00:32):
until the rest of time, you just know him as
a UC Hall of Famer. Marty Gilliard's joining us right now, Marty,
what's going on?

Speaker 1 (00:39):
What I'm going on? Baby? How y'all doing? Man? How
y'all doing?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Man? Marty?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Uh, tell me, tell me what it was like to
get that phone call, to know that everything that you
put into the University of Cincinnati, the vision you had
when you first got there, it played out. It came
to fruition, and you are now known forever as a
Hall of Famer.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Man.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
They played out perfect. I mean, I just felt an
overwhelming sense of emotion. It was a lot of things
I kind of went through my head. You know what
I mean. For me, it was just like, hey, because
I pay attention, you know, I don't want to knock
my boy. But we had a we had an induction
that came in before me. I actually ring a red

(01:19):
induction that came in before me, and I kind of
paid attention to that one, and I was just like, man,
like how the people chump don't make it first, you know,
But more or less, it's like I can, I can
go on and on about trying to be petty or
this or that or that or this. But I was just, man,
you know, tears in my eyes.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
My wife's looking at me. She's wondering what the hell's
going on, you know, because she don't know what's up
with the clone calls. She's thinking, you know, somebody might
have passed or you know, something just you know, crazy.
And I hung the phone up and I just hugged
her and I'm like, bigger, I'm going into Hall of Fame.
And she's like, oh my god, oh my god, oh
my god. Because she's not a football person. You know,
my wife is from Mexico, so it's like everything in soccer,

(02:00):
and so she doesn't really know anything about the greatness
that I've done, you know. So it's like all the
time she hears me tell our kids, you know, hey,
you're special. You come from greatness. You're special. You come
from greatness. And for the longer she didn't know what
it was. And she's still trying to take it all in,
even from just the flight over, you know what I mean,

(02:20):
It's we had fans all over the flame. I was like, well,
it was a blessing man.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, that the fans out of it, because I have
no doubt tonight's going to be awesome. Honoring you tomorrow
at the game is going to be phenomenal. But I
was asked a lot about uh from others, your time
in Cincinnati and on the field. It was the electricity.
It was knowing that every time you touch the ball,
whether it was on a kick return, whether it was
on a pass, I knew that something special could happen.
But what I was even more blown away by is

(02:47):
the way the whole city and the fan base took
took you in and and and gravitated around you.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
What do you attribute that to?

Speaker 2 (02:55):
That that you saw so many number one jerseys and
you were such a fan favorite. What what goes into
that and that relationship that you'll always have with the
fan base here in Cincinnati.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
I didn't realize, to be honest, I guess they say
the true tell of a man is when he's not around,
you know what I mean. And so for me, it's
like I didn't know how much I really really I
ain't know how much the time I spent in the
student section or with the fans interacting like that, I
was just being me, you know what I'm saying, Just me,
really me being me, and that was something that I

(03:27):
always stay true to. I tried not to, you know,
if we're having an interview, I tried not to be
all extra proper because that's not me, you know what
I'm saying. I wanted to be just me. Man. I'm
a country boy on the woods. I'm a humble guy.
You know. I love any and everybody, you know what
I'm saying. So for me, it's I remember I had

(03:50):
my own fan section. I remember kids were me for Halloween.
I remember the student section going crazy. I remember just
looking up there and seeing all the ones painting on
you as by the painting or Warren, you know what
I mean. So it's like for me, those times with
the fans, and I mean, we can go back. I
ain't gonna say Pipe missed through it and put it
in the bad spot for it. But he sent me

(04:10):
in the crowd. You know, I was just trying that.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
I was trying to add to the.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Well that that was one of the things that I
think a lot of the fans remember when I crashed
into a little uh little bylain I think his name
was I'm not mistaken when I crashed into him and
immediately picked him up and immediately, you know, wanted to
make sure he was okay. You know, I was a true,
really really hard felt story. I don't think it's gonna

(04:38):
be any of that no more, just because of the
whole N I L thing.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
What kind of N I L number you talking in
two thousand and nine?

Speaker 1 (04:47):
I want N I L. Now you know what I'm saying,
I won't back pay what I want stuff for us. Man, listen,
it wouldn't it would be will be. Let's just say
they probably will be sitting back, you know what I'm saying,
having a ball somewhere where's crystal blue water? You know

(05:08):
what I'm saying, at least once a year. Let's just
say that, you know what I mean, or we would
have probably bought high for short vine or something like that.
You know, Like me, I'm thinking, you know, I'm thinking
about stuff to help the fity, you know what I mean,
because me being homeless. When I was homeless in that set, bro,
I seen so much and I was still doing my
community service. Man, I was still I don't even want

(05:30):
to call a community service. I'm still hanging out with
the community, you know what I mean, Still still helping everyone,
still reading to the kids, still helping with after school program,
still trying to get kids out of a bad situation,
still giving their advice, still doing the whole thing, you know.
So I'm still being me. So that's the thing for
when it comes to I think the fans gravitate towards
me was because I was a guy that was truly

(05:53):
set on just being him and I ain't want to
lie to nobody. I feel like, if you're trying to impress,
you know, someone with your speed, sure, your appearance, or
something like that, you gotta lie every day. Man, I'm
getting older at this point. It ain't no time to
be trying to lie to somebody every day about this
super person that I'm supposed to be and this, that
and the third. So I just be me, you know.

(06:14):
And for me being that and going through what I
went through being homeless and never left school, I had
a chance to leave though, you know, for the record,
I had a chance to go to other schools and
we had a whole plan involved. But you know, God
rest my father's soul. I think he was a this
fighting factor because he didn't care. My dad was like,
just come on home and live with me, you know.

(06:36):
And I didn't grow up with him, you know what
I'm saying. I didn't live in the house with my dad,
you know what I'm saying. So for him to say
just come home to me, I was like, oh no,
hell no, I can't do that, you know what I'm saying.
I just can you know. I didn't want that kind
of help, you know what I'm saying. I really at
the time just wanted the vent and kind of like
let it all sink in, because that whole time could

(06:59):
have been and prevented if one of our teammates would
have just came, you know, came up and took his
took his his his uh, his punishment on the chair
and again me being me. I'm not gonna tell on
my teammate because I got cheated on. Everybody knows if
you know, you know, you know what I mean, Like,
I got cheated on, and that's what kind of stopped
me in this whole academically ineligible thing, because it was

(07:22):
like either you get uh, get called or excuse me,
you get charged with cheating at the university, which we
know is a you know, or you rat somebody out.
And so I took the heavy f in a class
that we knew I needed. It was actually my favorite,
my favorite class, history of jazz and pop music. Anybody

(07:45):
that knows me know that I love music. You know
what I'm saying. If you was in the dorm building,
you heard my music. If you were at practice, you
heard my music in the locker, so it was like
you heard the music. We always made sure you have music,
you know. I just loved it. And I had an
A in that class the whole time, the whole time,
like a ninety two or ninety three something like that,

(08:07):
the entire class, the entire time. I sat in front
of the class every day. You know, We'll be coming
from morning workouts and I'll be running over there. I
wouldn't even have a shirt on, you know, getting class,
wipe off real quick in the front and then throw
my shirt on, you know what I mean, and sitting
class and you know, handle my business. But at the time,
we had a bad academic advisor. She proof read both

(08:28):
of the papers that were written for the class. You know,
she didn't she didn't actually see the difference which literally
was a three page paper and the second and the
third page of both papers were identical. Yep, you know,
So just going through that whole spill man still being me,
you know, sneaking on the field in the summertime and

(08:50):
groups to throwing to me and then be at this
point now it's just like hey man again, it's just
a blessing man. You see everything that you put in
it is just yeah, you know, I have.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I have two rapid fire questions here. We got about
a minute left. Which which part of your game did
you appreciate more You're as a wide receiver or you
as a returner?

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Both even both, even even between the two.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Okay, let me give you this because I know you've
talked about this before. You and I have talked about
this before, assuming and we're not even gonna get into
Brian Kelly. But assuming he's the coach, let's take the
two thousand and nine Bearcats and let's put him up
against the twenty twenty one Cincinnati Bearcats. Who's winning that game?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
Head boy, we're beating al out of them. Yeah, the
one close we're.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Being ail out of. We're beating the ail out of
any team, any team that came after us, really, any
team that came before us. And I'll say that, you
know what I mean because everybody scream sauce in Southeast
South that but who he was going to guard.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Me?

Speaker 1 (09:50):
No, goodie, no, Marcus, No, you know what I'm saying.
Our mind, no, because we've seen press every day. So yeah,
we were have scanting every team after us and every
scan we came before us. That's special, man, we played
for a different reason.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
You are. You're the man I am.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
I'm so excited that you are going to be getting
your moment tonight, and I know you're gonna be honored
tomorrow as well.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
As Chris Carter won. What was that awesome that Chris
Carter said?

Speaker 2 (10:18):
I mean, obviously bear cap born and bred now Hall
of Famer even after his death.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
You got it, that's Marty Gilliard.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Marty, I love you man, Thanks for the time and
I look forward to catching.

Speaker 1 (10:26):

Speaker 2 (10:30):

of his time.

Speaker 3 (10:35):

the Nights still to come since he three sixty The
