of the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Welcome in to what we like to call here on
ESPN fifteen thirty, The Monday Midday Quarterback. It is the
latest edition on what feels a lot like an addition
we've already had multiple times this season. Yesterday, the Bengals
fell to one and four on the season. They dropped
their third straight home game to start the season. Home
(01:38):
game losses as a touchdown or more favored against the
Patriots and the Commanders, and a home loss against the
Baltimore Ravens. Yesterday in overtime, where the offense did things
that quite frankly, I don't even know offenses can do.
For the Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Burrow made throws that I
didn't even know a quarterback can make while getting hit
(01:59):
drop balls in literal buckets forty yards plus down the field.
Unbelievable offensive efficiency from the Cincinnati Bengals yesterday. And you
take that and you'll wad it all up and you
throw it in the garbage can because this team can't
do a thing defensively and apparently cannot make the decisions
(02:20):
as a coaching staff to give this team the best
chance to win. Here we are on another losing Monday,
and I'm angry and I hate this feeling. And I
told Austin today when I got here, I said, I
hate now that I feel like I do about the
Cincinnati Bengals that I would about the Cincinnati Bearcats when
(02:40):
they lose tough basketball games, because I just can't let
it go. It sits there and it eats away at me.
And it's one thing. You play hard and ball just
done all your way at the end, and you have
a couple of bad breaks. You couldn't have asked for
a better break yesterday. You couldn't have been given a
win on a platter more than what the Baltimore Ravens
(03:06):
did for you yesterday. A good Ravens defense. A good
Ravens team. You knew going in that they were great
against the run. You knew going in that Kyle Hamilton
was playing really good ball and Kyle and Marlon Humphries
was still a very good player, and you got Rokwan Smith.
It's odd. I don't even remember seeing Rokwan Smith in
(03:30):
the game yesterday. Fact of the matter, I don't remember
seeing many Baltimore raven defenders in the game until Marlon
Humphrey made a great play on an interception late in
the game. But outside of that, man, it's one of
the one of the cleanest and most crisp offensive performances
that I've ever seen. Now, yes, they they had fault.
(03:52):
There were three offensive possessions in the second quarter where
the Bengals went three and out, three and out, five
and out with a true legitimate opportunity to either cut
into a deficit or get a stronger lead and a
stronger grasp on the game. We will talk about the
last possession of regulation, We'll talk about the overtime possession.
(04:15):
But this is in no way, shape or form a
day when we're going to start and talk about Joe
Burrow in a negative form because Joe Burrow made headlines
earlier last week when he came out and said I've
got to be damn near perfect. By golly, Joe Burrow
was damn near perfect yesterday, especially in the second half
of that game. Five touchdown passes, two of those each
(04:39):
coming to Jamar, Chase and t Higgins. Jamar's greatness was
on display. Teas greatness was on display. I thought Chase
Brown flashed multiple times. I thought Zach Moss was solid,
and yet here we are talking about a loss in overtime,
and it's kind of the worst case scenario scenario we
(05:00):
talked about last week a ton what if Joe Burrow
is nearly perfect and what if they still lose? And
they did? And I'm angry. One I'm angry because I'm
a fan of living in Cincinnati my whole life and
being a legit fan of the Cincinnati Bengals. Two, I'm
(05:24):
angry because it's now my job to cover and talk
about this team, I believe it or not. I don't
enjoy talking about this team in this sense. I'd much
rather be talking about man. But I'll put the team
on his back. Yesterday in regulation in overtime, got a
much needed win, and now all the sudden Steelers are
three and two, Browns are done, Ravens are two and three.
(05:47):
You're right back in it in the AFC North. That's
what I want to be talking about. And I know
that a lot of different plays over the course of
a game impact the outcome. But today I'm most angry
the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals because I don't
feel like the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals trust
(06:08):
Joe Burrow enough. Yesterday, I don't feel like the head
coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, with three time outs at
the end of regulation, trusted Joe Burrow enough to go
win the game in an overtime. When gifted, and I
mean gifted, Lamar Jackson just fumbles a shotgun snap that
(06:29):
goes right to him, you are gifted the ball on
the thirty eight yard line of the Baltimore Ravens and
all you need is a field goal to win. Now,
think about if you watched the start of the game yesterday,
early reports in the game fifteen to twenty mile an
hour wins expected. If you watched the Justin Tucker field
(06:53):
goal that he made that tied the game six yard
field goal. He started that field goal outside of the
goalpost because the wind was blowing. So by no means,
in no way are you sitting there watching yesterday thinking,
(07:15):
even with Evan McPherson, even with Money Mack, that a
fifty three yard field goal is a gimme. And so
then I watched the possession in overtime, first and ten,
Baltimore thirty eight yard line, Chase Brown left guard, no gain,
not a fancy scheme. I took a screenshot of it.
(07:40):
I posted on Twitter. Nine players, nine players within five
yards of the ball for Baltimore Ravens. That means t
Higgins had off coverage one on one. That means Jamar
Chase had off coverage one on one with a rookie
guarding him. Bengals got nothing out of it. They come
out on second and ten, Chase Brown runs to the
(08:00):
right guard for three yards, and you set up third
and seven. And at that point, at least for me,
I started feeling a little bit uneasy, thinking, no way
on third and seven, they're just gonna run it. No
way on third and seven, they're just gonna take the
(08:21):
opportunity for a fifty three yard field goal. No no, no, no,
no way, no way. Are they just gonna try to
play this safe. They're gonna go win the game. They're
gonna put the ball in Joe Burrow's hands here and
on third and seven, Chase Brown ran to that right
side again for no gain. It's set up a fourth
and seven and on fourth and seven they essentially ice
their own kicker. They took a time out on that
(08:43):
and Evan McPherson for the fifty three yard field goal
off of what looked like a rough snap and a
ball that Ryan Rico dropped. I'm not putting the blame
on Evan McPherson. McPherson misses the field goal, and on
the next play Derrick Henry run for fifty one yards
down to the Cincinnati six yard line. They kicked the
field goal, end of game. I thought it was weak
(09:07):
from the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals coaching in
a game where you're one and three and you need
to win, I thought it was weak to not put
the ball in the hands of one of the best
quarterbacks in the game of football in the way he
was playing yesterday, probably the best quarterback that the game
had this weekend. Quite frankly, nothing Baltimore did matter nothing.
(09:32):
Joe Burrow was dicing them in the secondary. And you
line up and you turn around and you just run
it up the middle three times. It's disgusting, it's frustrating,
and it pisses me off. Here's Joe Burrow, Here's Jamar Chase,
here's t Higgins, all getting into their prime, and you're
(09:53):
wasting it. You're wasting it with the terrible defense, and
you're wasting it with decisions that take the ball out
of your best player's hands in the downs and the
moments of the game that matter most. Why not spread
him out? Why not let Joe Burrow do what he
did the whole game, find the matchup he likes and
attack it. Don't want to run on you, don't want
(10:18):
to throw it on first down? Okay, don't run it.
But when you see you're not getting anything, and you're
seeing that they're loading the box, let Joe Burrow go
win the football game. Let him get a first down,
let him get two. Make it a chip shot for
Evan McPherson. Instead, here we are one and four, and
(10:39):
I've got a question, what the hell is going on
in this organization because I heard Jamar Chase after yesterday's game.
I heard Jamar Chase say, man, that's on me, that loss,
that loss is on me because of my route on
the interception. Heard Evan McPherson blame the kick on himself.
It wasn't his fault, the ball was, but I heard
(11:00):
him take ownership. Joe Burrow blame the loss in general
on himself in his postgame press conference. That's the same
Joe Burrow that had a career day thirty of thirty
nine for three ninety two and five touchdowns. And after
the game, I heard Joe Burrow say that loss is
(11:21):
on him, and then I heard the head coach. I
heard the leader of the Cincinnati Bengals after the game say, oh, hell,
Joe checked into a run. Heard the leader of the
team basically double down and say, wouldn't change anything about
how the end of the game was called. Where is
where is the ownership? I hear it from the players.
(11:44):
And now at one and four, we've got a ton
of different questions that we've got to dive into today.
There's a ton of different decisions we've got to dive into.
Dox Hill as an ACLUH injury. I believe Austin is
he out for the year. Is Dox still out for
the year.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Seems like he is out for the year. I don't
have confirmation, but basically, if it's an ACL, he's done.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
So not good for Dax Hill. I retweeted a video
I know Austin did the same at aldi Yelmoor Tony
Underscore Pike fifteen. It looked like either von Bell made
a business decision on that last play or just took
one of the worst angles you'll ever see a safety
make on the Derek Henry fifty one yard carry. There
are so many questions with this team, and if we
had to talk about culture last week, We're damn sure
(12:24):
talking about culture this week. Because I'm worried about the
locker room. I'm worried about a fracture. I'm worried about
watching the Giants last night without Malik Neighbors or Devin
Singletary went to Seattle and got to win, and now
you got to go there on Sunday night. I'm worried
about a lot of things, but right now I'm worried
about the top of this organization. I'm worried about Zach Taylor,
the leader of this team, blatantly not trusting Joe Burrow.
(12:46):
I'm angry, I'm disappointed. I'm frustrated. This was supposed to
be a championship level team. This was supposed to be
a Super Bowl window year, and it's all been thrown.
And I know I had more messages yesterday of friends
and people that I know that are pissed, that are angry,
(13:08):
that are mad, that won accountability from someone somewhere with
this team, we have not got that yet. At one
and four, Austin, I know you had thoughts on the
game as well.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Yeah, it's just you know, I knew after the Carolina
game that this season was probably not going to go
very well just because they're not good enough.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
They don't have good enough players.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
The old guys aren't good anymore, the young guys aren't
good enough yet they're injured, and basically just trying to
figure out how to approach the rest of this season
because yeah, you want them to be good, but you
know that they can't. Like it is nearly impossible for
this team to win games number one and number two,
(13:53):
to be able to string enough good play together to
actually get into the playoffs and they wouldn't last very
long in January if they did. And it's just overwhelming
disappointment because you know, at the end of last year,
you were frustrated because you know Boyd was going to
be gone. You know, Mixing was probably going to be gone.
(14:13):
It just didn't. It didn't pan out the way it
was supposed to with that group of guys. And now
you look at this season and you know, I admittedly
I felt pretty good about this team in training camp,
felt pretty good about them coming into the season. I
had no idea the defense was going to be this bad.
I had no idea it was going to be this bad.
And so now it's just overwhelmingly disappointing that the last
(14:37):
season with T Higgins is not going to work. Yeah,
it's basically lost. And so now you're going to enter
an off season where you're going to move on from him,
and we'll have to have conversations about his future this
season later on, maybe in the show or certainly this week.
And you know, the Borough cap pit gets bigger, Jamar
Chase is going to get a lot more money than
(14:58):
he would have a few months ago. Well, I think
I just feel this overwhelming disappointment that while so much
about this organization has changed, it feels like the top
team building part of it and the philosophy that they
share about contracts and drafting players and scouting and so on,
(15:20):
has not changed enough. And so it makes me wonder
is this window really viable? Even though Joe is right
now playing like the best quarterback in the National Football
League and I truly do believe in him to be
the guy, I wonder if the people around him and
(15:42):
the people in the front office are capable of surrounding
him with the right pieces to make this work. I
thought they had done that this year, and I was wrong.
And the play that we have seen from guys on
this defense atrocious. The young players are not ready to
be playing in the NFL, and you're owen three at home.
(16:03):
That this was you know this. The goals every year
are to be undefeated at home, win the AFC North,
and win the Super Bowl. And you're owen three at
home with losses in New England, Washington and Baltimore like that.
And I've been a long time I guess Zach Taylor apologist.
I've defended Zach a lot. The way that he handled
(16:26):
the press conference yesterday as you just outlined, does not
sit well with me. Even more so, it does not
sit well with me that with over a minute and
three timeouts in regulation, you decided to play for overtime.
I think it says a lot that Zach would rather
flip a coin than go for it second and seventeen,
(16:49):
third and seventeen try to win the game that way.
I think it says a lot about how he felt
about his defense that he'd rather flip a coin. But
to me, it's more concerning that he didn't trust Joe Burrow,
and in the same situation going into overtime, it felt
like in the biggest possessions of the game, and he
(17:10):
decided in the season, Yeah, he decided to take the
ball out of the hands of Joe Burrow, and you
know we're going to get into that play call on
first down and overtime. But there's just a lot of
stuff to me that doesn't add up. And it's really
frustrating because everybody wanted to believe in this team's ability
(17:31):
to right the wrongs of last year and the injuries
of last year and all that, and there were questions
about Burrow and frustrations about this and that, and Joe
is doing his part much more than I think people
could have expected from him coming off that injury. He
looks fantastic. Jamar is top two. Higgins has played well.
(17:52):
The offensive lines played the best they have. I mean,
you even saw some semblance of defensive line yesterday and
bj Hill I thought looked really good. But it's just
not enough. Over and over again when it matters most.
This team doesn't make the necessary plays, They don't make
the right decisions, they don't do the right things to
(18:14):
win games. And it's really frustrating because I thought that
this was a team capable of winning the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
We'll dive into the x's and o's when we come back.
One final thought on that, Austin, if if you're not okay,
and you've been a Zach Taylor guy, if you are
okay with how Zach Taylor handled that postgame press conference,
how do you feel like the team handles it? Yeah,
on a locker room, that's probably pretty divided right now,
(18:40):
because the offense is really good and the defense stinks.
And at the same time, if we have a problem
with what the head coach is saying, how does that
reverberate in the locker room that's already probably kind of
on thin ice. A lot to sort through. Let's dive
into some of the numbers and the decisions defensively yesterday.
(19:00):
When we get back, we'll take phone calls. I promise
we'll be quicker to start our number two so we
can get to as many talkbacks as possible today and
so much more between now and three o'clock on the
Monday midday Quarterback on the home of the Bengals, ESPN
fifteen to thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
This is Football in the Natti, brought to you in
part by AE Door and Window Company, on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Ady on the Monday midday Quarterback, as we try to
sift through disaster from yesterday for the Cincinnati Bengals. Let's
start here, Austin on the defensive side of the ball.
The numbers themselves are are awful from a snap count standpoint,
At least on defense. Miles Murphy played forty four percent
of the snaps. I think that helped Sam Hubbard and
Trey Hendrickson, and I thought at times Hubbard looked better yesterday.
(19:52):
I thought Trey Hendrickson looked good. Jenkins was up to
fifty eight percent of the snaps on the defensive line,
and Jordan Battle got eight reps yesterday. From a snap
count standpoint, here's the problem. The defense is not good enough.
Here's where the defense ranks according to Pro Football Focus
(20:13):
through five weeks. And I was actually surprised by this Austin.
Their run defense is actually tenth out of thirty two
teams in the NFL. Not as bad as we thought.
And I thought the run defense was better yesterday. I
agree for much of the game. Their coverage great according
to Pro Football Focus, twenty fifth out of thirty two teams,
and you would think with the loss of Dax Hill
that number is going to take another hit. Here's where
(20:33):
they're really bad, tackling twenty ninth out of thirty two
teams in the National Football League, and their pass rush
ranks thirty first out of thirty two teams in the league. Now,
if that number is not bad enough, listen to this
one offense Austin. On the interior defensive line, eighty six
past rush opportunities were had yesterday between bj Hill, Chris Jenkins, McKinley, Jackson,
(20:57):
Jay two Fala and just a guy. And out of
those eighty six pass rush opportunities, bj Hill won three
of them. Jenkins Jackson to file a guy combined for
zero pass rush win snaps. I mean, it's hard to
be that bad. So I say that because on one side
(21:20):
of this, I understand what lou An Rouma was doing
in the second half. Because while the defense I thought
played winning football in the first half of the game,
I mean, hell is, seventeen to fourteen at the end
of the half, you take that all day long. After
the first drive where Baltimore went right down the field
and again Austin a first drive where the Bengals chose
(21:43):
to not take the ball and Baltimore ran twelve plays
for seventy yards and a touchdown, I thought after that
the defense responded well. Over the rest of the half.
They forced what three different punts, they forced a safety,
and they gave up one touchdown on the other drives.
In the first half, they weren't that bad, but the
pass rush wasn't getting home and so in the second
(22:06):
half this is maddening to me. In the second half,
the Bengals took a twenty four to fourteen lead at
one point, they took a thirty eight I'm sorry, they
took a thirty one to twenty one lead at another point,
and then a thirty eight to twenty eight lead after
the Jamar Chase seventy yard one play touchdown drive.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Three different ten point leads in the second half.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Unbelievable. And while they were given those three different leads,
the Baltimore Ravens drives in the second half went four
plays for a touchdown, ten plays for a touchdown, eleven
plays for a touchdown, and eight plays for a field goal.
Here's the problem I had. You have three ten point
(22:53):
leads going into the fourth quarter. Throughout the third quarter
and fourth quarter, you pretty much offensively were doing whatever
you wanted, and you gave up touchdown drives of two
minutes and thirteen seconds, five minutes and fourteen seconds, and
three minutes and thirty seconds. Austin, I was astonished on
what I was watching in the second half because time
(23:16):
after time after time again I saw the Bengals bringing pressure,
and I get like, hey, you want to bring pressure
because the front four is not getting enough. But wrong place,
wrong time, three different ten point leads. What's more important? Austin,
With the way the offense was playing yesterday, you know
(23:38):
you're probably gonna give up touchdowns. What becomes the most
important thing and the most vital thing in the game,
the clock. So instead of giving up a four play,
two minute touchdown drive when you take your first lead,
why don't you make that eight or nine plays. I've
seen it for much of lew and a rumor's career.
(23:58):
Why don't you just drop seven or eight, keep everything
in front of you, and make them dink and dunk
the ball down the field and take a ton of
time off the clock. Instead, at twenty four to fourteen,
you gave up a pass on first down to Jay
Flowers for fifteen yards, and then Charlie Kohler, not Isaiah Likely,
(24:18):
not Mark Andrews, Charlie Kohler goes over the top for
fifty five yards. So, okay, regroup, Bengals go twelve plays,
score again, thirty one, twenty one, and on the kickoff,
and on the kickoff, Collier for Baltimore touches the ball
and it rolls out of bounds at the eight yard line.
(24:41):
Let's the math tell us there. That means they gotta
go ninety two yards and at the time Austin, do
you have any guests, Austin, at thirty one to twenty one?
How much times left in the game? How much? Fourteen
minutes in the fourth quarter, So you're up ten and
they got to go ninety two yards. Here's how the
first three plays of that drive went. Mark Andrews twenty
(25:02):
seven yard game over Jordan Battle, Lamar Jackson eighteen yard game.
Then there was a holding that made it first in
twenty Lamar Jackson thirteen yard run, Zayflowers thirteen yards. You
just you get gashed on the first couple plays of
(25:23):
the drive. And yes, you know, Lamar Jackson does make
plays with his legs, and he also missed Mark Andrews
for a touchdown on that drive. Or Andrews did make
the catch. But a couple plays later, Baltimore scores, and
with nine minutes on the clock, it's now a thirty
one to twenty eight game because you fail to keep
(25:45):
anything in front of you. Then there's the one play,
seventy yard touchdown drive. And for the third time, Austin,
you've got yourself a ten point lead, and the Ravens
get the ball back with eight fifty four on the clock,
and the next thing, you know, Mark Andrews for eleven,
Zay Flowers for seventeen, Zay Flowers for twelve, Wallace gets twelve,
(26:11):
roughing the passer has added on top of it. And
then Lamar Jackson becomes Superman and he stiff arms Sam
Hubbard twice one time into the ground, finds Isaiah Likely
on a ball that he fumbled, and you give up
a touchdown. Drive that lasts just three minutes and thirty eight.
Three minutes and thirty seconds. Let's say that last six minutes.
(26:31):
It's a completely different game. The Bengals get the ball
back in an attempt to go down and finish the game,
which I liked, Austin because with five minutes left in
the clock in the game and only up three, do
you know what the Bengals did. They didn't just line
up and run it down of the middle. They spread
it out. Joe Burrow finds Chase for nineteen, he finds
Higgins for eleven. You're like, all right, they're just gonna
(26:52):
go score again and put the game away. And yes,
Marlon Humphrey makes a good play, intercepts the pass. I
know Joe Burrow wants it back, but Bill at that point,
you knew that were gonna go get a field goal.
Baltimore goes and ties it up. So I thought, I
know it's a bad tackling team, Austin, I know it's
a band coverage team. I thought the decisions by Leu
(27:13):
and Arumo in the second half were offul Keep everything
in front of you and make them take five to
eight yard passes all the way down the field. The
clock's not gonna stop math alone, make them take six
minutes and they don't get any extra possessions. Why are
we blitzing? Why are we sending pressure that did not
(27:36):
get home on Lamar Jackson? At worst, heam makes a
couple guys, Missus extends to play and either throws it
away or completes a pass. The rush and the blitz
did nothing. All you gotta do is make them take
some time to go down the field and then if
you want to bow up in the red zone and
force a field goal instead of a touchdown, great, but
(27:58):
you have to make them take time off the Now,
what happened on offense after that is a story for
when we get back, and we'll take some phone calls
as well.
Speaker 3 (28:10):
Since he three to sixty one last point about the
defense on that. Uh, you know, giving sending so much
pressure and blitzing, you're putting yourself in a lot of
man de man situations. And without Dax Hill yep, and
without Mike Hilton. Uh, that doesn't make a lot of
sense to me either. And when you look at next
(28:31):
gen stats, Uh, the average receiver separation for the Baltimore Ravens,
the league average is two point nine six yards. And
the way this status combined is created. It is how
much separation a receiver is getting from the nearest defender
in yards at the time of the catch or incompletion. Okay,
(28:54):
the league average is two point nine to six yards. Nelson, Aguilar,
Mark Andrew Rashad Bateman, Zay Flowers all well above league
average in separation. Zay Flowers was averaging over four point
five six yards of separation, Andrews five point three five,
Bateman five point zero seven, Aguilar three point zero four.
(29:18):
Those guys were all getting a ton of separation. It
was making it really easy on Lamar. It just made
no sense to continue doing that.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
And at the same time, when you do that, Austin
and you're not getting home, you allow Lamar to scramble,
and then you got to cover for longer with guys
that can't cover as is. It's maddening, and it's the
third time this year we're in here talking after a
game about decisions made by lu An Aroma. The cover
zero blitz against Jayden Daniel when they're already in field
(29:49):
goal range, the decision to rush three on fourth and
long against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the decisions in
the second half to continue to dial up blitzes that
did not get home and allow Lamar Jackson to have
in the passing game. Can't happen worse than that is
what happened on the offensive side of the ball late
in the game. We'll get to that when we get
back and your phone calls five, one, three, seven, four nine,
(30:10):
fifteen thirty, it's the Monday midday quarterback on the home
of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
You've been listening to football in thenetti on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
High prices are like a money back.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
You sucking your.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
Refl the Official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 6 (30:29):
Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 7 (30:34):
The Bengals Mattie en point lead in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Famar drop the snaps, you know, balls.
Speaker 8 (30:38):
On the ground.
Speaker 9 (30:39):
I'm still on the ground if you picked up by
Jermaine running to the Boardian the thirty eight. The Bengals
half the football half the thirty eight of Baltimore Avlamar
Jackson dropped the snap, couldn't pick it up, plainly and
Theptangals have a chance to win the game.
Speaker 8 (30:56):
How about it the turnover ratio becomes.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Austin. What were you thinking when that happened?
Speaker 10 (31:06):
I was.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
You know, I'm not a very animated person when I
watch football games. Yep, I've grown up a little bit.
Not to say that you're you shouldn't do that, but
that's not who I am. I jumped up, I was,
I was. I was pretty excited. Yeah, yeah, it just
said some things I yelled at the TV, some things
(31:27):
to Lamar Jackson that I would never say to his face.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
It felt like, for the first time as a Cincinnati
sports fan, like we were gifted something like man that
usually goes against us, and we got that now and
then we'll talk about what happened after that. Look, it's
hard to pick apart anything on the offense yesterday. Their
offensive EPA right now is point nine to four per drive.
(31:51):
They're averaging two point nine to four points every time
they touched the ball. They have the third best EPA
on offense in the NFL. Joe Burrow after yesterday's game
number one in the NFL, and touchdown passes number one
and passer rating number two and completion percentage number three
and yards and tied for first and forty yard passes
or more. Mentioned again, the Bengals that scored have scored
(32:11):
already this season one hundred and fifty five points. To
put that into perspective, the five and oh Minnesota Vikings, Yes,
the five and oh Minnesota Vikings, led by Sam Darnold
are five and oh and have only scored one hundred
and thirty nine points. So say what you want about offense,
they're wasting prime, prime real estate right now with Burrow,
(32:32):
Chase and Higgins and Austin. You mentioned that the frustrating
part about Higgins is it also feels like you're wasting
the last year of T Higgins. That's what's frustrating about
all of this, but no more in my opinion, frustrating
and I guess you could say the run game yesterday
could have been better three point one yards to carry,
But in the first half they did whatever they wanted
on the ground. I think those three point one yards came,
(32:54):
and that average dropped later in the game when Baltimore
knew it seemingly that the run was coming. I didn't
feel like there was much creativity in the running game,
and outside of a stretch in the second quarter that
I mentioned where they punted on three straight possessions, the
offense was awesome. Let's talk about the two final possessions
here offensively, Austin, you mentioned that you wanted them to
go win the game. At the end of regulation. They
(33:16):
got the ball back on the thirty yard line with
a minute and thirty five left and all three timeouts,
and on the first play, before Joe Burrow could even
do anything, he was sacked for a seven yard loss.
Terrible terrible protection up front by the offensive line. But
first and ten goes to second and seventeen, and you
(33:38):
don't snap the ball again until there's fifty nine seconds left.
So that, to me, Austin, is the first time in
which I felt like Zach was punting because let's say
you get sacked second and seventeen, spread the defense out.
What do you think the thought is for Baltimore? Don't
give up anything? Beat deep. You could have stolen eight
(34:00):
yards on second down in my opinion, yeah, easily, and
get yourself back to a third and manageable.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
And if you look at the stats yesterday, Joe was
averaging ten point one yards per completion, yep. Like obviously
had a couple of big plays in there. But even
if it's down to eight eight and a half yards
per completion, that's kind of the way your offense had
been moving all the all game, yep.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Why not take a time out immediately and on second
and seventeen go get eight to ten yards back on
an easy pitch and catch because Baltimore was just gonna
play coverage.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
It was, you know, the interception at the end of
the previous drive followed by the sack that immediately made
Zach kind of tuck his tail between his legs one
hundred percent. And I think if you look at what
happened in the Buffalo Houston game, Buffalo was backed up
a lot, backed up in their own territory up but
by their end zone. In the same situation. They were
(34:55):
very aggressive and they passed it three times and they
had to punt in and Houston wins on a field goal.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
So that is the exact situation that Zach is trying
to avoid. I think a little different when you're backed
up inside the five. But the difference is Josh Allen
yesterday was nine for thirty and concussed. Joe Burrow was
thirty for thirty nine and playing out of his mind. Yep,
and you have much better field position. To me, it
(35:24):
was an indication that Zach trusted or would rather put
the game in the hands of a coin flip in
overtime than back on his defense, which is what he
and I don't blame him for that, I get it.
But to me, put the ball in the hands of
Joe Burrow, live and die with him.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
Which is what he did on third and seventeen by
handing the ball off to Chase Brown. They take a
time out, they punt the ball away, and it gets
to overtime. It's fast forward to overtime, and again, Austin,
I don't remember a time whereas a Cincinnati sports fan
watching a team that I'm passionate about, was gifted something
like what Lamar Jackson gave the Bengals here it is
(36:03):
on a platter, and the Bengals in overtime, all they
needed was a field goal because Baltimore got the first possession.
All they needed was a field goal. And at the
time it was lifeless, right because it was first and
ten at the thirty nine and it felt like they
were just going to go down and score. He fumbles
it and the Bengals recover all the way on the
Baltimore thirty eight yard line and what ensued was three
(36:29):
straight runs up the middle where they gained a total
of three yards. Austin, it was windy yesterday, it was
tougher conditions. It's a rookie holder. And I know that's
not an excuse. It's a rookie holder. But I looked
at Justin Tucker's field goal to tie it. That thing
moved a bunch, and I'm just like man fifty three
(36:51):
and I text my cousin, text him right before it.
I said, make or miss. I hate how they just
managed that last drive. Yep, they go first down run
and I screenshot it on my Twitter on my ex
first down run against nine guys in the box with
t Higgins and Jamar chase one on one coverage, Jamar
with a rookie on him, where again, you could easily
(37:14):
take a five yard free route and maybe they break
a tackle and get you ten or fifteen, or they
score a touchdown because there's no safety over the top
at this point, you break one tackle, you walk into
the end zone. They ran it up the middle, They
ran it up the middle, they ran it up the middle.
Not one time did they allowed Joe Burrow a chance
to go win a game. Instead, they put it in
(37:36):
the hands of Evan McPherson, who misses the field goal,
and on the very next play Derek Henry runs for
fifty one yards and the game is over. I I
don't remember austin a time that I'd been more frustrated
at a series in a football game than what that
overtime series was.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Yeah, it just the whole last three passon essions did
not make sense. I mean, even going back to the
interception in overtime, you know you're under three minutes, Like
I thought, Joe should have never thrown the ball. Jamar
did not run a good route, and Marlon Humphrey made
a good play. The three things you could not have
(38:17):
happened happened?
Speaker 2 (38:18):
Yeah, now, I will say, and the second ten false
start didn't help.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
Right, And at that point, now you it felt like
Zach shifted into Okay, I'm afraid to lose this game, yep.
And when you play like you're scared to lose, you lose.
And that's what happened. And you know, if it's true
that Zach called a pass play on the first down
(38:42):
in overtime and Joe checked out of it, then I
I put that firmly on Joe.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Burrow and that has someone has to ask that today.
How do you what do you see with what you said?
I believe is nine men in.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
The box, nine men within five yards of the scrimmage,
nine men within five yards of the line of scrimmage.
What does Joe Burrow see in that to make himself
think that this is worth checking to.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
A run knowing that you got two of the top
guys and on the outside in one on one coverage.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
If that happened, then I feel like Joe is guilty
of thinking the same way Zach was, which is being
scared to lose yep. And I don't want that from
my quarterback that's supposed to be Joe Cool and Joe
burr and isn't afraid of that stuff. If that's what
Joe was thinking, then shame on him, correct because that
shouldn't be the case. And you mentioned this, I think
(39:37):
before the show is when you do decide to run it.
There was a complete lack of creativity in that run game,
like give me a toss, give me a reverse, give
me a jet sweep, give me rpo action, something where
or in some way, shape or form.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
How do you not cut outside get the.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
Ball in the hands of Jamar Chase on that drie
How about a jet sweep to Jamar like the play
to you know, two possessions, three possessions. Before that, you
threw a quick three yard pass to him and he
took it to the house. Yeah, you can't set something
like that up again. And I can't smoke screen that. Yeah,
and I missmoke. On the last drive, it was it
(40:15):
was Jamar Chase and Yosi Vas to the boundary. I
would have rather seen t Higgins the boundary because he's
a possession guy, But it was those two on first
down and then on second down. Uh, it was just
Jamar chasing there with uh with three tight ends, so
second and third down. Cody Ford came into the game
as part of a jumbo.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Package YEP, which signifies to the defense, Hey, here it comes,
I just it it to me, screamed, I'm scared to
go win the game, and in turn they lose the game,
and frustrations and sue, I'm I hope someone asked Zac
to clarify today, and I hope somebody asked you about
it this week as well. Please clarify what happened with
(40:54):
nine in the box, because it's there, and you could
talk all around the league. How many how many guys
with Jamar Chase out there against a rookie with nine
guys in the box and no saved the help over
the top are gonna check out of a pass and
go into a run And doesn't make sense.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
I cannot fathom in taking the ball out of the
hands of your best player if you were in the
way that Zach talked about it after the game, and
this was I believe Joe Daneman posted this. He said,
we're in field goal range, a sack and a hold
and we're out of field goal. That's your thought, That's
(41:31):
what he was thinking. That's what he said to the
media he was thinking in those moments, and that is
a loser mentality.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
You're thinking of what can go wrong.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
Instead of the fact that I got the best quarterback
in the planet right now, Let's let him win us
this football game. That that is unacceptable and inexcusable from
the head coach of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
Updated offensive rankings per Pro Football Focus, past block seventeenth
in the league, run block twenty seventh in the league.
They are twenty third in the NFL and rushing second
according to Pro Football Focus.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
In passing and you know this, this has been brought
up a couple of times since then. If you think back,
Zach did the same thing against the Niners in December
of twenty one, true and took the ball out of
the hands of Joe Burrow and has said repeatedly since
then that that was a learning moment for him. Well,
not yesterday.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
It wasn't. He coached like a coward one hundred percent.
And then he he didn't take the blame and he
he didn't own up to that as well. That that
to me is the most frustrating out of all of this,
is that as a coach, hey, I've got to be
better and it felt like he was he was not
(42:49):
willing to take that yesterday.
Speaker 4 (42:51):
I do.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
I worry about the culture and where things go after that.
We'll hear a little bit of that Zach Taylor postgame

Speaker 2 (44:25):
Welcome back to the Monday midday Quarterback on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. We'll place him a Zach Taylor
and his postgame audio here coming up, but first we'll
get to your phone calls on the other side of
this break. I had one final thought, Austin, because you
brought up the the the last drive in regulation and
in overtime and the decision to kind of sit on
(44:47):
the ball the Bengals in regulation up by three, up three,
had the ball on the Baltimore twenty eight first and ten.
Did they go under center? No, they went shotgun. Three
minutes left up three, Baltimore had just used their first
timeout and on first and ten, out of shotgun, they
(45:10):
ran the ball with Zach Moss. Baltimore called their second timeout.
So Baltimore has one time out left its second and
ten devastating Orlando brown fall start. But did they go
under center after that?
Speaker 12 (45:21):
No?
Speaker 2 (45:22):
They spread it out again. So with three minutes left
in the game, Zach Taylor, with a three point lead,
had no thought of just running the ball and taking
three points. The thought was go win. And when Joe
Brow through that interception, it's almost like Zack Taylor stopped
trusting him yep, which is incredible, absolutely incredible. Other things,
(45:43):
over the weekend, FC Cincinnati lost again at home. That
team is limping towards the MLS playoffs. And today, on
a positive note, Terry Francona was announced as the next
Reds manager, officially making that announcement. We'll play some of
the audio of Terry Francona's press conference. We'll do that tomorrow.
(46:04):
We're just so loaded today with what the Bengals may

Speaker 2 (47:04):
All right, it's our two of the Monday Midday Quarterback.
Obviously water Wall Bengals here today and for the first
time today, an opportunity to take your phone calls, allow
you to perhaps vent some of your frustrations that you've
had a night to sleep on. Now let's start with you, Jeff,
what's up.
Speaker 14 (47:23):
Happy surly Monday?
Speaker 2 (47:24):
Jan Oh Yeah, you.
Speaker 14 (47:26):
Know that was as frustrating as I've ever been. Well,
as soon as we missed that field goal, I just
got up out of my seat and walked out of
the stadium because you knew what was coming. It was uneventful, yep, unavoidable.
Speaker 2 (47:38):
And that's the thing like, at that point, you still
had a chance for the defense to come out and
bow your backs a little bit, and right away you
give up a fifty one yard run.
Speaker 14 (47:47):
Well, the bad thing for our section was the past
to Jamar. In the past, the Yoshi were right in
front of us, and as soon as Joe let that
ball to Jamar go, you could see that Jamar had
five steps on the guy and you could watch trajectory. Tony,
you're a quarterback. You can't throw a better pass than that, Yep.
I mean if there had been a trash can in
(48:07):
the back corner of the end zone, it would.
Speaker 15 (48:09):
Have gone in.
Speaker 2 (48:10):
Some of the throw the deep throws he made yesterday
were unbelievable. Absolutely, the timing, the window, the anticipation couldn't
be better.
Speaker 14 (48:19):
A couple of smaller things underneath Zach and all that
stuff wasn't Zack Moss advertised as good in pass Pro.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
Yeah, the week before he was for and it wasn't
as strong yesterday.
Speaker 14 (48:33):
Oh, he was not good yesterday, definitely not. And you
know all season we cannot cover tight ends?
Speaker 15 (48:40):
Is it scheme? What is the deal?
Speaker 14 (48:43):
Opponents know when they need yards call to play for
the tight end. Why can't we scheme that?
Speaker 2 (48:49):
Yeah? A lot of that time, well, obviously Mike Hilton
not being there hurt, but a lot of the time
that falls on the safety and whether you want to
look at the Henry Rona, you want to look at
the Cohler deep pass that was von and they are
not good enough at either side right now at the
safety position.
Speaker 14 (49:04):
That big lunkhead running by Bond like he was running
backwards was downright embarrassing.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
YEP.
Speaker 14 (49:11):
I was like, did I just see that really happen? So,
you know, I guess my hope for the season is
is Joe keeps playing like he is and maybe end
up nine and eight or ten and seven. I'm not
I don't care about the playoffs. I want Joe to
get Pro Bowl votes, all Pro votes and MVP votes,
and we're not going to do that if we're six
and eleven, it's just not going to happen.
Speaker 2 (49:33):
Good point, Jeff, I appreciate the call, man, Thank you.
Speaker 14 (49:36):
Enjoy the day, guys, yep.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
Awesome. One interesting point on Zach Mosson and Chase Brown.
I don't know if you have you looked at the
snap count yet.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
Yeah, I mean I know that it was like sixty
seven percent.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
I thought it would be closer to fifty to fifty,
especially the way Chase Brown ran the ball in the
first half.
Speaker 3 (49:51):
Yeah, and I know that the moss did not have
a good pass blocking day. Yeah, so yeah, something to
look at. I have not had a chance to watch
any of the film yet, but yeah, what's up Mark?
Speaker 4 (50:06):
Okay, I was at the game yesterday too. I saw
the same thing everybody else saw. I mean, Austin brought
my point up, and he brought it up before I
could get on and bring it up. Zach did this
before in that San Francisco game. He took the ball
out of Joe's hand in overtime, and he did the
same thing, you know yesterday. But I got a quarterback question,
(50:31):
you know. I mean, Joe played a good game and
not taking that away from him, but that interception he
threw Chase wasn't even open and he stared him down
in that situation. Why was there a need to try
to force a pass in there? I mean, he didn't
(50:53):
even look nowhere else.
Speaker 2 (50:55):
Yeah, I think at the time, based on pre snap,
he probably and you shouldn't do this is a quarterback,
but I've been guilty of it as well. He probably
predetermined that Chase was gonna win his one on one
matchup and never even second gave it a second look.
And that is that. That's on Joe Burrow. You can't
do that. But I would assume that that he just,
(51:17):
based on the play and the leverage, thought that he
could get away with it.
Speaker 4 (51:23):
Yeah, and I'm I'm gonna go back to the past.
I saw Joe Montagne and I saw Chilen Brady's whole
careers and what they would do in them kind of situations.
They would always take what the defense gave them. A
three yard pass, a five yard pass. They took what
you gave them. And sometimes I see Joe Burrow do that,
(51:46):
but in these situations, something I see that he doesn't,
so I kind of worry about that with him. Like
you know, sometimes you just gotta take what the defense
gives you and didn't play another and play another. I
think I think you will come out better in the
long run if you do it that way as opposed
(52:06):
to trying to force the ball into your best receiver.
Of the coaching staff, I'll make this point and I'll
get off. I think they have. They have botched this
whole season with their decisions, not understanding their personnel, what
they can do best and what they can't do on
offense and defense. I mean, they can't close a game
(52:29):
out on either side of the ball. I mean, Zach Taylor.
The way for them to win games this year, they
have to try to close it out on offense. They
have to do it that way because the defense can't
can't close the game out, they can't stop nobody.
Speaker 2 (52:48):
To hold on.
Speaker 4 (52:49):
Yeah, and uh, I've seen where the coach and Joe
Burrow a couple of passes in Kansas City where he
could have extended the drive because Sickie dropped the pass,
but he missed the throw. The Yoshi that could have
kept a drive going. You know, they they can't close
the game out, and I think that's a problem. So
(53:11):
I'll get off and listen to the rest of the shy.
Speaker 2 (53:13):
Thank you, Mark. I agree, and I think Austin hit
on that as well. What did you say? It felt
like Zach Taylor trusted a coin toss more than the
more than the defense to get a stop.
Speaker 3 (53:23):
Yeah, and you know, and and doing so took the
ball out of Joe Burrows. Listen, I don't necessarily like
I get that the defense stinks. You would trust a
fifty to fifty coin flip more than you would trust
them against Lamar Jackson, especially where they said they played
in the second half Lamar Lamar and the Ravens offense
did not face a third down until eleven minutes to
(53:46):
go in the game. After in the second half, they
did not face a third down until eleven minutes left
in the fourth quarter. So at that point, I get
where Zach is like trusting the coin toss more, but
I felt like you could have been more aggressive in
that situation.
Speaker 10 (54:00):
What's up, Rob, Hey, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (54:04):
Tony?
Speaker 15 (54:04):
How you guys doing today?
Speaker 2 (54:05):
Good?
Speaker 16 (54:06):
Okay, I just have a quick question for you when
guys gets your thoughts on this. So, the Joe Burrow
interception yesterday, watching it from my couch, I immediately jumped
up and screamed that he forced it and he didn't
need to. So I hop on Twitter because I follow
you guys. I want to get your guys' opinions, and
Chad Johnson tweeted something in real time.
Speaker 15 (54:26):
He said it was a two on two.
Speaker 16 (54:29):
Don't know what that means, but he said that Humphrey
knew that the flint was coming, that Joe Burrow should
have checked down, and that he doesn't know if he
has that freedom now. After the game, there was a
couple of comments. They asked Joe Burrow about that interception.
Joe Burrow said, I don't regret nothing. There's nothing that
I would do.
Speaker 15 (54:47):
It's a good play. They asked Zac Taylor.
Speaker 14 (54:49):
Zach Tanner said Joe burn did amazing.
Speaker 15 (54:51):
And it was a good play.
Speaker 16 (54:53):
Then they asked Jamar Chase and before they could even
finish the question, Jamar Chase Ane and clap you out,
and they said to elaborate on that. And then he
called and he said it was a two on two
m and that the sideline from Baltimore was screaming plant plant,
So Jamar knew that everyone knew what was going on, and.
Speaker 4 (55:16):
Joe Burrow threw it.
Speaker 16 (55:18):
Jamar Chase couldn't get through and it was intercepted and
Jamar took all the heat.
Speaker 15 (55:22):
But I thought it was interesting how he said that.
Speaker 16 (55:24):
The sideline which he's standing by Baltimore kept screaming friant flant,
and no one recognized that. Does Jamar have a choice
of can he call time out? Can he wave at
Joe Burrow because everyone knew it.
Speaker 2 (55:38):
Yeah, you could call time out and you could check
out of it.
Speaker 6 (55:42):
I had more.
Speaker 2 (55:43):
I had more of an issue with the play design
itself because it was a man demand concept and had
they just lined up, had they lined up and ran
it the way it was? They started in a three
by one, which means Jamar Chase was up top on
Marlon Humphrey by himself when motion Yoshi vas to that
side to set up a two by two. I think
(56:04):
that looking man is something that the Bengals do a lot,
where they run an arrow with a slant to try
to get some type of rub, and you could see
right away Marlon Humphrey jumps to the hip of Jamar Chase.
I would have rather seen Jamar Chase be able to
operate up there by himself. That's where I think the
problem came in.
Speaker 3 (56:20):
I was surprised because of the little separation that Joe
still decided to throw it.
Speaker 2 (56:24):
Yep, and he predetermined it. Yeah, he thought, I've got
to I've got a slant with man coverage. Jamar Chase
is gonna win. And I think that's the part.
Speaker 16 (56:33):
Yeah, it was just interesting how Chad Johnson noticed that
he knew the play and that Jamar Chase said that
they were screening slant. They knew it, and it still happened.
Speaker 2 (56:43):
All right, thanks Rob. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (56:46):
Probably, like you mentioned ton A tell on film somewhere,
everybody tell us what they liked, they like to go
to and they were ready for it.
Speaker 2 (56:52):
Yep, Dave, what's up?
Speaker 12 (56:57):
Uh?
Speaker 17 (56:58):
Yeah, Like I always tell you guys on a season
team holder and I was down. I was the guy
I acktaled what Jeff said before. I've never been so
furious after the game. I was hollering, screaming when they
set up after the thumb one knew what he was
doing and he did the same thing. San Francisco game,
and now only I go back to the Green Bay
(57:19):
game that same year, the same sort of day. He
was playing for a long field goal and Briny Mac
actually thought he made that and missed it. But it
was just curious that you think about the band as
the defense. You missed a fifty three yard field where
send them up for I might win with Tucker. It
don't make any sense, and it's just I was just traded.
(57:42):
I was hollering, scream till ten minutes of the game.
Was till fifty yell like a fool's in that yellow
scream like people, and people want to hear it, and
I'm just my boys. One day, I want to say,
and there you get her. Callers was uh. I want
to say about the culture is?
Speaker 4 (57:55):
You know?
Speaker 17 (57:56):
I said, I've been seeing til horse is seventy nine
pretty much, and I've seen a good bad times. It
is great culture down in. The fans deserve a pound
of back. And if you notice these teams have been
winning down there. They always mentioned how hard of an
environments to play down there, and uh, the fan my brother,
you know, cam my brother, your coach, but uh, he
(58:16):
said he thought that as his life. They ever been
down there, and uh somebody on the news broadcast one
who said that they thought that's the reason why Jackson
had that fumble because uh they weren't in sync with
the uh you know, with the snap and everything, and
uh they had a lot of credit fans. It's just
a shame. The fans deserve a lot of credit for
the culture and the bales. It's a lot of uh
(58:40):
credit for the culture too. But I would always say
it's bad sign of a bad uh cars when he
got one, there's always one. The offense playing great now
in the defense and special teams are letting us down.
It's uh, you just got to have that car together,
you know, and they've never seen the have that.
Speaker 2 (58:57):
I just can't get it at this point, Dave, I
appreciate the phone call. Thank you. Yep. Uh, you know
the frustrating part, Austin. The environments are great. Those environments
are going to be great when you're owing three at
home and you keep asking fans to come back and
do the same thing.
Speaker 3 (59:10):
Yep, And I know that, Uh, season ticket invoices have
gone oh yeah, not a good time.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
Prices have gone up and not good. One more, what's up, Mike? Hey, guys,
I was going not too bad, not too bad.
Speaker 15 (59:26):
Not too good either. No, no, too good either. Austin
that stat you just gave open my uh morphine laden
eye lids uh into that that. Nope, no third downs
until then it left in the freaking game. I didn't
know that.
Speaker 2 (59:44):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 15 (59:46):
That's disgusting. Yeah, I mean so I didn't get to
see I had surgery yesterday and I didn't get to
see Button Islands. So anyway, you probably talked about I
don't want to bore everybody, but I'll save one thing
for Gino Stone. Bell Bell might have blown, might have
gave up on that last play, but by god, Gino didn't,
(01:00:07):
and he saved the touchdown that down on that play.
I was so impressed with Geno Stone. He didn't quit.
He he nailed big Boy and got him down to
six or whatever, but he did not quit.
Speaker 2 (01:00:18):
Yeah, it's it's don't It's hard because because.
Speaker 15 (01:00:22):
You're motivated, because he's an x rave and you think.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
Tom I think he was motivated. He's also probably frustrated
because he missed a couple of plays in the game
and everyone in the secondary did.
Speaker 12 (01:00:32):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
But I agree, I mean, he did not quit on
the play, which is something you like to see, but
you know eventually they they need better play at the
back end of their defense. Their their run defense is
tenth in the NFL. You would think find how they've
been gassed it to be a lot worse, But their
coverage and their tackling is awful and that comes a
lot of times out of the secondary and they they
(01:00:54):
have to be better there if they want to do
anything to salvage anything from this season. The defense has
to play better.
Speaker 15 (01:01:01):
Yeah, and I just don't know what this personnel. If
it's possible, I'll tell you real quick. On the baseball,
I think the Mets are in the Phillies heads.
Speaker 4 (01:01:08):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:01:08):
I love it.
Speaker 15 (01:01:09):
I think the Phillies are I love that they're the
d Backs of last year. They're in their heads and
they're the d Backs of last year. And then freaking
Dodgers starting picking, which leave what I was worried about
is going to cause them grief because look at that
Anny of the loses, the heartbreak of seventy five come
back and just beat their dominate shows character.
Speaker 2 (01:01:28):
I agree. I think all the Dodgers and Padres and
the Mets Philly series both at one one. I think
those are going to be phenomenal. But I think those
those teams that came in without the home field advantage,
they took something on the home field of the Dodgers
and the Phillies for sure to go back home.
Speaker 15 (01:01:45):
With they did. I appreciate the time, thanks my take
care y, sap up the good work because I count
on you both every day.
Speaker 2 (01:01:52):
I really do, absolutely thank you. Mike. All right, we're
gonna take a break, Austin. Here's what I'm gonna do
during the break. I've got the replay pulled up right
now of that interception. I'm gonna break that down over
the break, and then when we come back, we'll take
talkbacks on the Home of the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station. It's the Monday midday quarterback.
Speaker 18 (01:02:12):
Now your chance to press the microphone record your message
for a standing down't please keep the clean a sprinkle
spring You're an hours that time for the buys. It's
our favorite and s three sex days. Stay but play
(01:02:37):
at thes on your screen and trying not to sabotage it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
All right, let's try not to sabotage that you're.
Speaker 19 (01:02:45):
Listening to me, you need to be canceled constantly playing
not to lose football games. And everybody in Cincinnati knows it.
Everybody saw it coming yesterday. Taking the ball, do you
beth play of hands late in the fourth quarter and
it over time. You need to be Camfled's.
Speaker 20 (01:03:09):
Gonna be a nearly perfect our defense and situational awareness
come backed by this again. If you're going to kick
a long field goal and overtime, do it on third
down in case there's a problem with the snap, you.
Speaker 21 (01:03:19):
Call it time out.
Speaker 20 (01:03:21):
I mean, Zach Taylor, the guy drives me nuts, and
he's throwing Joe Burrow under the bus for checking out
a pass plays which even if you did, don't throw
your guys under the bus. The guy needs the David
Bell treatment yesterday, and we got coaches like Bill Belichick
and Ray Bowl out there. They could probably fix this defense.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:03:38):
That's the other part about kicking the field goal. If
that was your plan the whole time, why didn't you
do it on third down?
Speaker 22 (01:03:45):
Go get it in case there's a hello box of
the president Ronald Riggan, And well, most of you know
that I am all about being conservative, But Zach Taylor
crossed the line and was way too conservative after that
fumble in overtime. Frankly, it was an impeachable offense.
Speaker 13 (01:04:06):
That game unfolded about his predictably as thumb asses driving
fifty miles an hour in a twov laying on two
seventy five when there's nobody around.
Speaker 22 (01:04:16):
So much cool stuff happened, man, and none of it matters.
Speaker 2 (01:04:19):
Yep, that's the hard part, man. There were so many
unbelievable plays yesterday that Burrow made, and they're all for nothing.
Speaker 23 (01:04:26):
I'm thinking I'm going to stay put right here in
this warshroom until the Bengals make a coaching change. I'm
like wild man walker on a billboard. This is my
form of protest. Please bring food, I reckon, I'm going
to be here a while. My favorite part of yesterday's
game was when Zach called time out. I use his
own kicker. Yeah, Zach might be attractive, he might have
(01:04:48):
them Warren County good looks, but man, he's got to go.
He's the number one reason why the Bengals are one
and four.
Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
I don't think that's true.
Speaker 10 (01:05:13):
Tony often been from White Oak the.
Speaker 14 (01:05:17):
First time long time.
Speaker 24 (01:05:18):
I'm sure you spent the whole hour undressing Zach Taylor.
Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
Time to go okay, thanks, okay.
Speaker 25 (01:05:25):
In a normal organization, the defensive coordinator today would be
begging for his job with the front office, but not
with the Bengals. They discouraged any type of change. Second thing,
why isn't Jake Browning the placeholder for field goals? Third thing,
(01:05:46):
do you think Joe Burrow is going to be playing
soft and not taking risks to avoid entries around?
Speaker 2 (01:05:55):
No where any of that comes from. No, he's not.
Speaker 20 (01:05:57):
I don't even know where to start with that loss
yesterday either.
Speaker 26 (01:06:01):
I mean, you give up over five hundred yards of offense,
thirty first downs, thirty ten of fifteen on third down.
Speaker 17 (01:06:08):
You give up.
Speaker 26 (01:06:10):
I mean even if you want to say that one
and four they're still in it, which mathematically yeah, true, whatever,
but with that defense, you're.
Speaker 10 (01:06:17):
Not going anywhere.
Speaker 26 (01:06:18):
They have no shot at winning anything playing defense like that,
and there's no sign it's gonna get any better anytime soon.
Speaker 27 (01:06:25):
They're in big trouble.
Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
It's on the panic.
Speaker 3 (01:06:27):
Yeah, they're gonna get it. They're gonna have their hands
full against the Giants next week.
Speaker 27 (01:06:31):
Correct, This isn't God, this isn't Perry carry. This is reality.
The reality is the Bengals can't execute when it matters.
I don't know if it was the interception that Joe
Burr through at the end which caused Zach Taylor to
get super conservative, but why not try to throw the
(01:06:53):
ball when we stop? Lamar Jackson pick up the fumble.
But yeah, we try to run the ball, get three
yards and we just can't execute.
Speaker 2 (01:07:01):
The google This is See this pisses me off even
more because I just sit and still on it even more, Austin,
if it's first and ten and Joe Burrow did check
out from past to run, then why don't you call
a pass play that he can't check out? I on
second down? What are we I'm just not buying that, guys.
Lining from St.
Speaker 28 (01:07:18):
Louis Line my way back home after another disappointing loss doesn't.
Speaker 10 (01:07:23):
Get any easier.
Speaker 19 (01:07:24):
I'm really tired of these long sad drives home.
Speaker 7 (01:07:28):
But makes it hard to and I get a renewal
letter from the Bengals say my season tickets are going up.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
Yeah, this is the life I've chosen.
Speaker 10 (01:07:38):
Boys.
Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
Anyway, I guess you're gonna need that money. I get it.
I'm gonna need that money.
Speaker 29 (01:07:44):
Hey guys, Margaret for the group, I think it's time
for Lou to go. I think we've seen more than enough.
There's been just no signs of improving or getting better.
Speaker 30 (01:07:57):
So I think it's.
Speaker 29 (01:07:57):
Time to move on from Lou. But to have a
little optimistic for everybody. Vegas has the Bengals at plus
one right now to make the playoffs, so they see
something that we don't.
Speaker 8 (01:08:12):
Day.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
My question is this, Austin, I trust myself more in
Vegas when when you're one and four and you've played
to the level that they've played, and this is a
championship aspiring team, how does Luin a Romo keep his job.
I don't know. I really don't know. I don't I
don't have the answer to that.
Speaker 31 (01:08:33):
Tony Austin, it's me, dumb voice match a good fan here.
And just like I told you, we didn't cheat at
all last year, and just like I said we would
keep it within two scores against them Washington Huskies. This
season is just like we said it would be. Sharon
(01:08:54):
Moore reload, no restarting here.
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
We're gonna figure it out.
Speaker 32 (01:09:02):
Go Blue, Thanks George, Tony Otter, Ryan Yell Springs.
Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
You know as a Bengals fan this Monday obviously pretty tough.
I didn't think we'd be in this position a few
weeks ago. Now we got to dig and call our
way out, try and squeeze in the playoffs. You just
get the five hundred.
Speaker 32 (01:09:18):
But that's okay because as a Buckeye fan this weekend
watching Alabama and that team up north absolutely embarrassed themselves.
Speaker 21 (01:09:25):
I go.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
I told Austin Day if I had, if I had
to place a futures bet, Ohio State's a team to
win it all, ripping.
Speaker 33 (01:09:40):
The natty out here and not so sunny, not catch
button to work, not getting laughed at it at work.
Speaker 2 (01:09:47):
It is what it is, such a big win.
Speaker 33 (01:09:52):
Beyond poor uh not putting any of your best players
hands in overtime, Chase Higgins, I don't understand that one.
The defense had numerous attempts to mix stops, especially in
the end zone. Can't Baltimore the on end zone and
he come down and drive it down out throws Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:10:08):
Season seems done. Our dark Ny.
Speaker 15 (01:10:11):
This is goon from Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (01:10:13):
What's goon?
Speaker 7 (01:10:14):
I want to talk about the driver or burrow through
the pick, not blaming him or Chase just a great play,
like hum free. But I don't understand after how two
big plays from two big completions to Higgins and Chase
on that drive were down in Baltimore's territory forty forty
five yard line. Why are we not trying to run
the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:10:32):
Then that's when he chose not to run the ball.
Speaker 7 (01:10:34):
Over time over time to do it. It just this
guy's play calling makes just.
Speaker 2 (01:10:38):
No sense backwards.
Speaker 3 (01:10:39):
Well, like to me, it's like that's fine, Like that's
what I'm asking for. Let Joe Burrow do what Joe
Burrow does. And you had been great all day and
then you make a bad play. Uh So, Yeah, I
don't have a problem with that because that's who they are,
that is their identity, and they were having no problems
moving the ball.
Speaker 12 (01:11:01):
Hey, guys, Happy Monday. I'm gonna get right to them.
Do you realize them we had something to do with
David Bell's departs are big that we do a live
broadcast calling for us removal of the seventeenth and by
the twenty second he was called I'm pretty sure if
(01:11:22):
we get back off the phone with pellam Woodows we
can have Zach Taylor out of here by next Sunday.
Speaker 34 (01:11:31):
Might be fellas It's Adam, and I want to take
full responsibility for the sports debacles this weekend. I was
in attendance for both and left disappointed both times. However,
luckily my streak of curse does not extend to other cities.
Speaker 35 (01:11:53):
Go Pacers.
Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
I do feel bad, awesome because our listener who called
you let the talk back last week that on his anniversary,
they were coming in from out taking in the Ohios
Steak game. He came to the grail with his wife. Yeah, Brian,
lovely couple, and he was rocking the centy three to
sixty shirt with you and I the rapper shirt rocking that.
I feel bad that they came in and had to
witness that. Yeah, go Bulls. My name is Willie and
(01:12:17):
I'm a hope you are madic.
Speaker 31 (01:12:19):
I'm hopelessly addicted to Cincinnati sports.
Speaker 2 (01:12:23):
All I have is hope setting help. Yeah, you might
need it at this point. You might need it.
Speaker 36 (01:12:30):
Hey, guys, what's going on in who day Land? You
got the head coach trying to blame the kicker for
the loss of the yesterday's game, saying, Hey, we trusted
the kicker and he's supposed to make that throwing him
under the bus. You got Joe Burrow trying to say
to the media, we're not a championship team this year,
and uh, you know, things have to change immediately. Wink wink, wink,
nudge nudge. Coach Taylor needs to go. Everyone's pointing fingers
(01:12:53):
at each other, blaming everything for the loss. I mean,
right now, one and four?
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
Is it South?
Speaker 36 (01:12:58):
You know you will win.
Speaker 2 (01:12:59):
Some It's hard. There's a lot there. But yes, I
understand why.
Speaker 37 (01:13:03):
Tony Austin Monday midday quarterback. Yes, this is Jim from Ross.
What a totally entertaining game the Bengals head yesterday could
have gone either way. Fate played a part, That's okay.
I was totally entertained. I thought the front end of
our defense looked fantastic. Somewhere in their facility the secondary
is sitting in a round room. However, I really think
(01:13:26):
that they're going to go ten and two the rest
of the season, make up playoffs.
Speaker 35 (01:13:29):
What do you think? Let's stay positive?
Speaker 2 (01:13:30):
Come on, love the positivity. I hope you're right, love
the positivity.
Speaker 8 (01:13:35):
Scared money, don't make money doing his whole career as
a head coach, he didn't be scared. He takes a
ball out of his franch Iqb's hand overtime when it
matters most runs at three times and he Lias just said, well,
Joe checked down to a run play on that first play.
Come on, Joe a check.
Speaker 10 (01:13:50):
In to no run play when he's out one on
one with bonover Tea on.
Speaker 8 (01:13:53):
The outside being man, Zach say, it's my fault, as
anyone ever said, you know what, Zach Taylor want us
a game?
Speaker 37 (01:13:59):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
I hate to say it, but I think our season
is set. The eternal Optimus Kevin. That's hard to hear.
Speaker 38 (01:14:05):
The Mingos scored enough yesterday to beat every team that won,
yet they lost. The defense is horrible. At some point,
someone needs to be held accountable. I've been a fan
of this team for over fifty years. It might be
time to change that.
Speaker 2 (01:14:26):
Man. People are really down. This is a tough day.
Speaker 30 (01:14:28):
Hey, guys, Mike and Cole Rane, if you're gonna make
the asinine decision to settle for a fifty three yard
field goal, at least kick.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
It on third down.
Speaker 30 (01:14:35):
That way, if you do have a muff, you can
fall on it and try it again more. Zach Taylor
Bethoonery on play calling and it's old and something has
to change.
Speaker 2 (01:14:46):
That's the thing. The messages don't make sense. If you're
gonna kick it, kick it early to where if something happens,
you can redo try it again.
Speaker 39 (01:14:57):
I think Zach Taylor's ego is getting in his way.
Won't give up the offensive coordinating position because of his ego,
and he cannot admit that he was a big part
of the problem of why we lost that game. And
we talk about, Belle, how many.
Speaker 13 (01:15:12):
Games did he lose throughout his.
Speaker 40 (01:15:16):
Seasons?
Speaker 39 (01:15:17):
How many games did Zach Taylor lose because of his
stupid play calling? The heck with culture, it's going to
be gone if we don't start winning games.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
It's I am as concerned as I was last week
about the culture. I am now twice as concerned because
of how that game ended.
Speaker 41 (01:15:35):
Yesterday, Austin said her best of being a show. Brown
Family still the Brown family. They didn't want to pay
these defensive players. They still don't want to pay Tee.
The only person they have paid is Burrow because they
had to.
Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
And that's not even hitting them hard yet.
Speaker 42 (01:15:53):
That's the first organization the serious about winning. Then they
need to do the right thing and rid of Lou.
This is Game five. It's the same garbage that we've
seen and it's not getting any better. That's the problem.
That's why we're one in four. It ain't the offense,
it ain't Joe Burrow. Let's do the right thing and
(01:16:16):
get rid of Lou trying for a change, I'd argue.
Speaker 21 (01:16:19):
Then, hey Tony, Hey Austin. The thing that drives me
the most nuts with this game is the end of
the fourth quarter. We try to be aggressive, throw a
pick and then and overtime we try to not be
aggressive and then miss a field goal. Why not do
the overtime strategy at the end of regulation when you're
already up three, take a six point lead and hopefully
(01:16:42):
you can hold them. But oh well, whodah?
Speaker 2 (01:16:46):
Yeah, I unfortunately don't have the answer to that for you.
Speaker 42 (01:16:50):
Sorry, I'm double dipping, but I had to get back
on here and say that Zach Taylor, by no means
is off the hook. He needs to go as well.
This is just getting too old. It's disgusting, and we
the fans, do not deserve this. He's wasting this team
right in front of our eyes. It's time for him
(01:17:11):
to go as well.
Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
Well, I can confantly tell you that Zach Taylor, who
did take the team to a super Bowl, will not
be going anywhere. Jacob here, what up?
Speaker 4 (01:17:18):
Tony?
Speaker 15 (01:17:18):
What up?
Speaker 2 (01:17:19):
Austin?
Speaker 10 (01:17:19):
What a horrible loss? Offense?
Speaker 43 (01:17:21):
Look great, Joe Burrow, look like he's playing at MVP
level defense? Once again, here we go letting us down.
Can't come up with key stops when we need it.
I think Lou's gotta go. It's not all on him,
just ain't got the personnel to execute it. But we
got to bring in somebody that we can get the
best out of what we got. Yeah, let's go into
(01:17:43):
Sunday night, get a win.
Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
Someone's gotta be held accountable. Someone has to be held accountable.
Speaker 44 (01:17:53):
Well, I'm gonna stay off social media for a good bit.
Speaker 18 (01:17:59):
Too much talk see this toxic stuff.
Speaker 44 (01:18:02):
I just if they want to pull themselves out of
the gutter and go run for a wildcuttered spark spot,
I'm enjoy it. I'll watch them on Sundays.
Speaker 10 (01:18:11):
I'll be at the stadium.
Speaker 44 (01:18:14):
But I'm telling that I'm just gonna enjoy the fall season.
Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
Yeah, O day, there you go, Thank you, Johnny.
Speaker 45 (01:18:21):
Afternoon, gentlemen, This is Kate from Montgomery. So, to use
a tennis analogy. In tennis, you can win with fewer
points than your opponent if you win the important points
at the important times in the match and it holds
serve a break, serve or win a tie break. And
just this season, it's like the Bengals cannot win the
(01:18:43):
plays they need to win when they need to win them,
and it's just not changing.
Speaker 46 (01:18:51):
Vanderbilt was in a very similar situation on Saturday with
the lead and the ball against Alabama. Their coach called
plays and let them go win the game. Our coach
was scared to death. Even though we got Joe Burrow,
he takes the ball out of Joe's hands. That's damn
near unforgivable.
Speaker 2 (01:19:10):
Agreed.
Speaker 27 (01:19:10):
Good morning guys, Brian from La Sorry my voice.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
Is gone there he is.
Speaker 17 (01:19:15):
What a devastating day yesterday.
Speaker 15 (01:19:18):
It was nice to meet you, Tony.
Speaker 14 (01:19:19):
It's a holy grail.
Speaker 17 (01:19:21):
What are we doing?
Speaker 22 (01:19:24):
Am I supposed to look forward to the draft?
Speaker 15 (01:19:26):
Now? Are we gonna get rid of you? Higgins? We're
about from compensation before we just lose them all together
for something.
Speaker 10 (01:19:35):
Help me make it make sense.
Speaker 2 (01:19:37):
Thanks for coming. Appreciate your uh, your trust.
Speaker 24 (01:19:40):
Losses completely on the front office for not being able
to put anything together to go with this offense. Dick
Tobin's gotta go, Zach Taylor's gotta go get him out
of here.
Speaker 47 (01:19:55):
Oh gosh, welcome from the West side here. I will
thinking a lot about players coaches lately in light of
David Bell and now Zach Taylor. It's a lot like
dating your best friend. Everything's all hunky dory and fun,
and then you start doing the reeling real date stuff,
moving in together, thinking about marriage, kids, etc. And then
(01:20:17):
you're like, a, we should have just stayed best friends.
Speaker 22 (01:20:22):
And then you realize you.
Speaker 47 (01:20:23):
Can't take the next step, and then you just gotta
break up.
Speaker 2 (01:20:27):
Wow, Okay, interesting.
Speaker 11 (01:20:29):
Lou An Aruma has got to go effective immediately.
Speaker 2 (01:20:34):
He should be let go.
Speaker 11 (01:20:36):
Looking back now, it's no surprise nobody wanted to hire
him as a head coach, nobody wanted to lure him
away with more pay.
Speaker 6 (01:20:44):
As a DC.
Speaker 2 (01:20:45):
It's because he's not that good.
Speaker 11 (01:20:48):
Whatever edge he had he lost brother, it was a
personnel that he no longer has here.
Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
I don't know, he's just not that good. He has
to go.
Speaker 48 (01:20:58):
Okay, One thing I'd like to get a hold of
someday is the conversations between pitcher in the booth, oh
Man Zach down on the field, going on in the
headset as to exactly what they're seeing and what the
thought process is.
Speaker 2 (01:21:13):
I think that'd be really interesting. I can't wait for
hard knocks. Yep, that's coming. Don't forget that.
Speaker 49 (01:21:19):
Yeah, I can't believe so many people today we're focused
on Joe's interception. I mean, my gosh, the guy had
five touchdowns, three hundred and ninety fe yards passing, and
we're focused on that. Come on, the defense is freaking garbage.
Zach's freaking garbage. Lose garbage. I mean, do you think
(01:21:41):
people in Baltimore today are talking about Lamar's fumble if
the Bengals win?
Speaker 2 (01:21:46):
I doubt it. All right, our last one. We're out
of time or to argue. Will be back football in
the Natti ESBN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station on the
Monday midday.
Speaker 1 (01:22:01):
Quarterback Official Home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:22:07):
This is not the conversation I wanted to have or
planned on having today, But now we have to take
a few minutes and have this here on the Monday
midday quarterback thanks to our friends at Cincy Shirts on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. By the way, Cincy
Shirt's already on the Terry Francona train check out SINCEI
Shirts dot Com or any of their retail locations see
what they got cooked up for the Reds and Terry Francona.
(01:22:28):
But here is the sobering conversation that we have to
have here Austin, because I know it at one and four,
the conversation will remain. You know, there's a lot to
play for that. They do have a fourth place schedule.
They have some winnable games what I like to think
is winnable games on the schedule, but I already think
they've had a lot of winnable games on their schedule
(01:22:48):
that they haven't won. But the conversation now turns to
a guy and T Higgins. He had two touchdowns yesterday
and by all accounts, and I don't think anything would
deter this, Austin. T Higgins is not going to be
here next year, you know, and we can go back
and we could play the frustration game, and I do
all the time anytime I watch Jesse Bates make a
(01:23:09):
play for the Atlanta Falcons. I get frustrated because we
were told as a fan base that you can't pay
Jesse Bates and then play T pay T Higgins and
Jamar Chase. Well, they didn't pay Jesse Bates, and turns
out they could have probably paid him one of the
biggest discounted contracts in the NFL because of how good
Jesse Bates has been. The other problem becomes T Higgins,
(01:23:32):
who we were told, hey, they gotta pay T Higgins,
that they can't pay Jesse Bates. Higgins is gonna walk.
So my question and the unfortunate question to have here
Austin is Davante Adams is in the news this week,
and the news was made yesterday that trade talks are
intensifying for Devonte Adams this week. There are multiple teams
(01:23:52):
interested in Devonte Adams. For any of the teams that
don't land Davante Adams, if you're the Cincinnati Bengals, do
you have to pick up the phone and call.
Speaker 12 (01:24:03):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:24:03):
Yeah, I have to pick up the phone and say
what are you willing to give? I know you missed
out on DeVante, but here's T Higgins. We're not going
anywhere right now and we're just gonna let them walk
at the end of the year. Do you make that
call to a team in the NFL because you've started
one and four and T. Higgins is going to walk
for nothing?
Speaker 3 (01:24:18):
I think if you are serious about keeping this window
open and trying to win for the next several years,
then yes, you are having those conversations. If you're serious
about trying to make this thing work for the next
several years, you have to be having those conversations. There's
reports out earlier today that Higgins is or that Adams is.
(01:24:40):
You know, the Raiders are looking for a second round
pick and something else, and teams have not gotten close
to that yet. So say what you will about Adams,
what would that mean for T. Higgins in terms of
his price tag?
Speaker 2 (01:24:54):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:24:55):
I don't expect the Bengals to make a trade because
they don't. And you know, I feel kind of frustrated
with myself and the way that I've perceived this franchise
because I kind of thought things were different. Maybe I
drank the kool aid a little too much, and that
the way that they are going to approach team building
and everything has changed. And I do think that they
(01:25:16):
have made strides, but maybe not enough to be legitimate contenders.
That's what I'm trying to figure out if this franchise
is going to be serious about doing it. But Higgins
trade is something that has to be on the table
because this team is not good enough to win the
Super Bowl. Joe said it yesterday and we're going to
hear from Joe in the final hour. This seems not
(01:25:37):
good enough to be a championship team, and so if
that's the case, you got to start thinking forward. I'm
not saying punt the season, but the trade deadline is
a month away. You expect this team over the next
four Yeah, they could beat the Giants, they could beat
the Browns, they could beat the Eagles, they could beat
the Raiders. For sure, that's very possible. But what through
(01:25:59):
the first five games makes you think they're going to
win the next four. There is a difference in Devonte
Adams and t Higgins. It's six years. Higgins is twenty five.
Davante Adams is thirty one. Kelsey Conway tweeted four days ago,
Jesse Bates is a walking reminder that if you draft
a star, even at a position that's not quarterback, wide
receiver or d ND. You don't let them leave your building.
(01:26:22):
Players make the difference in today's NFL. She goes on
to say it's a bad business to let homegrown players walk,
especially when you tell everyone you are saving money to
pay your stars and fail to pay t Higgins and
you failed in round one to pay Jamar Chase. Pressure
continues to go on Bengals ownership to get these deals done.
Let's take a break. Let's finish up our number two
(01:26:43):
with a phone call when we get back. Five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty, The Monday midday Quarterback on the
Home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen to thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (01:26:52):
You've been listening to Football in the Natti on the

hour number two. Let's go to I don't think the ding,
but it is John Moon? John Moon? What's up?
Speaker 4 (01:27:29):
J Yunay, Myrtle pace.
Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
Myrtle beach.
Speaker 50 (01:27:38):
Unbelievable, Maso from the fil Baby, we are back and
ready to attack.
Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Wow, guys, vacation together. Wow.
Speaker 42 (01:27:50):
We do.
Speaker 50 (01:27:50):
What we do together is our business, Buddie. Don't you
worry about it, Bud. We're down here whacking this small
ball around like the Bengals defense got walked around last night.
Speaker 2 (01:28:04):
They seem to be taking the loss as well as
anyone we've heard from today a lot.
Speaker 12 (01:28:09):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
You seem to be taking the loss as well as
anyone we've heard from today.
Speaker 15 (01:28:13):
I'm gonna tell you something.
Speaker 50 (01:28:14):
This is a true story, Maso attest. I'm done with
the negativity.
Speaker 4 (01:28:18):
Screw it.
Speaker 50 (01:28:19):
They sucked yesterday.
Speaker 15 (01:28:21):
We're on the course.
Speaker 17 (01:28:22):
I'm with Big John.
Speaker 50 (01:28:24):
Bengals got a tying, a game winning field goal. They
miss it last four holes. I proceeded to shoot plus twelve,
and I'm about ready to go down there, and I'm
all Zach Taylor's punchable face. Someone punching right in it.
Speaker 2 (01:28:40):
Violence doesn't seem like the answer, Joe.
Speaker 50 (01:28:43):
It might not, Addie, but right now, damn it, I'm
mom violent. I don't know what else to do, Koey,
tell them what's up?
Speaker 15 (01:28:50):
Say hi, though yellow Man.
Speaker 2 (01:28:53):
Unbelievable here, Hey uncle Mike, what a trip?
Speaker 17 (01:28:57):
Mike?
Speaker 15 (01:28:57):
Tell them? How about them Bengals.
Speaker 50 (01:28:59):
Hey, we got a lot of sucking going on down here.
Speaker 3 (01:29:06):
Some people just seem to have it all, you know,
others others are dealing with the heartbreak of loss, and
you guys are just hanging out on the golf course.
Speaker 15 (01:29:13):
Unbelievable either of YouTube.
Speaker 17 (01:29:16):
Please explain to.
Speaker 50 (01:29:17):
Me are we gonna be able to I mean, I
know we got Joe Burrow. We weren't watching the game,
but I saw highlights low lights, however you want to
call them. You know, I'm just not sure. Are we
gonna be able to dig out of this hole?
Speaker 12 (01:29:31):
Or what?
Speaker 2 (01:29:33):
Austin your thoughts? No, I don't think so.
Speaker 15 (01:29:36):
You don't think so.
Speaker 50 (01:29:37):
Hey, cart lady, you are live on.
Speaker 2 (01:29:39):
The radio, Johnny, Johnny, just relax.
Speaker 15 (01:29:44):
Tell them what you think about the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:29:46):
Clean, clean, clean, don't curse there.
Speaker 13 (01:29:52):
They're a decent team.
Speaker 15 (01:29:54):
See that's what we got right now. You summed it
up thinking.
Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
We went from a Super Bowl contender to a decent team.
I think that sums it up. Does she have a
name or is it just cart lady, cart lady.
Speaker 15 (01:30:07):
She doesn't care.
Speaker 50 (01:30:07):
She takes my tips and she doesn't care.
Speaker 2 (01:30:09):
There it is.
Speaker 15 (01:30:12):
My uncle, Mike said. Her name is the beer Wincher.
Speaker 2 (01:30:18):
I hope, I hope you guys have a fantastic rest
of your day.
Speaker 50 (01:30:23):
Hey, hey, I got a question for you here before you, guys,
let us go. This is where we're at. We're at
this course called the Black More. It is a five
hundred and nine yard par five tone Maso over or
tone Audie over under on Maso's score on this whole,
I'll go eight.
Speaker 2 (01:30:41):
I'll take I'll take the over on eight.
Speaker 4 (01:30:44):
Body.
Speaker 50 (01:30:45):
Hey, you you're here, You're gonna win because I've already
had a ten or twelve or fifteen and eleven?
Speaker 2 (01:30:51):
All right, Dobe, thanks, Joey. You guys go four four? Yeah,
over over over over over six and a half.
Speaker 50 (01:31:02):
Well, dee Is.
Speaker 2 (01:31:07):
You guys have fun. Thanks, Jane's enjoyable.
Speaker 50 (01:31:09):
Alright, We love you, guys.
Speaker 2 (01:31:11):
Maya, It's four minutes of our lives will never get back.
There is nothing worth worse, especially having to do a
show after a loss like that. But when all of
your friends are on a golf trip and you're talking
about a forty one thirty eight loss in overtime that
drops the Bengals to one and four. We'll hear from
Zach Taylor and respond to Zach Taylor's comments when we
(01:31:31):
come back to kick off the third hour of since
he three sixty, the Monday Midday Quarterback on ESPN fifteen thirty,

Speaker 2 (01:32:23):
All Right, welcome back, It's our three of the Monday
midday Quarterback on this the Home of the Bengals, ESPN
fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station. This team has a long
way to go if they want to crawl out of
this one and four deficit. But as Austin alluded to
early and I agree with as well, there's just something
not sitting right with the way Zach Taylor handled the
(01:32:46):
postgame press conference yesterday and hearing Jamar Chase said it
was my fault on the slant, it was my route,
Evan McPherson taking blame when the snap was dropped, Joe Burrow,
who was unbelievable, putting the loss on himself. It was
the tone in the wording in what Zach Taylor handled
the postgame press conference. We'll play about five minutes of
that for you right now. Zach Taylor from yesterday's loss.
Speaker 51 (01:33:09):
All right, So sick to my stomach for our guys
in there. They fought, proud of them, but we got
to find a way to win. We can't keep coming
up one play short, and that's really what the game
came down to. So a lot that I admired about
how our team fought, it was that was a good,
good game against a great team, and uh, and we're
gonna find a way to rebound from this and move
forward because I believe in the guys in that room.
(01:33:31):
I know we're in a tough situation, but I believe
we've got the guys to bring us out of it.
And so I'm excited to see him do that.
Speaker 25 (01:33:35):
You tell us from your advantage point what you saw
on Eedy with Pears.
Speaker 35 (01:33:39):
I think that just the overall operation wasn't good enough.
Speaker 52 (01:33:43):
It might be possibility have them to play over they
were there was that kind of just part of it.
Speaker 35 (01:33:47):
We've kicked all.
Speaker 52 (01:33:48):
What did you feel like was the biggest issue that
you guys.
Speaker 12 (01:33:50):
Had on de pach year.
Speaker 35 (01:33:52):
Oh, we were aggressive.
Speaker 51 (01:33:53):
We were aggressive, you know, and and we weren't gonna
stop being aggressive. I thought we did a tremendous job
against the run, you know, until that last one of
the game. Our guys did a great job and and
they made some plays in the past game. I mean,
you guys watched the same game I did. He runs
around back there twenty yards deep and find some explosives.
How many guys do that? And so that's thought. Our
(01:34:14):
guys were relentless with their effort and and they were
gonna make some plays. We knew that still gave ourselves
opportunity to win the game, and we didn't take advantage
of them.
Speaker 30 (01:34:23):
Un Tell the interception that Joe had, how would you
rate the game and the way he was able to be.
Speaker 51 (01:34:28):
Even I mean, the guy made a great play on
the pick, you know, so obviously haven't seen a replay
of it, but certainly certainly gave us plenty of opportunities
to win.
Speaker 42 (01:34:39):
When you guys get the ball back over time after
practical covers that, what's the mindset there?
Speaker 35 (01:34:45):
It's just trying. We're in field goal.
Speaker 51 (01:34:46):
We feel like we're in field goal range, and you
know there are there, there is We've thrown the ball
in that situation before.
Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
We called past.
Speaker 51 (01:34:56):
Joe actually did a great job getting us out of it,
back into a run because the look was not there
to throw it, and so there was there was good
management by him. Still got a couple of yards out
of it. And then we're in a position to win
the field goal and and we thought we'd win it
with that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:09):
Regulation to get the ball back for a time outs
about twenty To take.
Speaker 3 (01:35:13):
Me through those three plays, and how do you feel like,
obviously as sad as the big.
Speaker 51 (01:35:16):
One, that's the big one. Yeah, that's the big one,
you know. You know, So that put us, I think
in second seventeen right out the gate, and I think
they just got us with the game up front, so
that that that changes you.
Speaker 35 (01:35:28):
A little bit.
Speaker 51 (01:35:29):
We still pushed the ball down the field and the
second play was a contested play that was incomplete. So
then you get to third and seventeen, which is I
mean the percentage just tell you you're you're that's a
very low percentage. So yeah, you can throw the ball
past the sticks. I mean, any team that's ever played
the game, that's a low percentage to play. You're risking
giving them the ball back with time with the kicker
that can kick it from the link to the field.
And so that's where we just ran out the clock
(01:35:51):
and felt like we get ourselves another opportunity.
Speaker 27 (01:35:53):
Well, you got.
Speaker 2 (01:35:54):
Concerned about the team's ability to finish games, and this
is one of the way to season's gone.
Speaker 51 (01:35:57):
Well, we've got to find a way to make that
one more play. I thought today there was gonna be
some point plays. I pointed to where we did that,
and unfortunately, the result was forty one thirty eight then, so, uh,
I was excited as as we're there in the fourth quarter,
I felt like we had made a lot of those
plays that I was going to be able to to
be really positive about it at the end of the day.
Speaker 35 (01:36:16):
Just it didn't happen.
Speaker 52 (01:36:17):
Was that a conscious decas when you guys made the
blitz as much as you did defensively? Yeah, and why.
Speaker 35 (01:36:22):
You gotta be aggressive?
Speaker 51 (01:36:23):
You know, it's it's obviously they've got the top rushing
attack in football, and so we weren't just really let's
sit back there and just let him do it. So
they got a great quarterback. You gotta put pressure on him,
make him make some plays. He answered the bell often
and that's what he does.
Speaker 52 (01:36:39):
How big a part of the game was you guys
maybe gott into the back feelings weren't.
Speaker 4 (01:36:42):
Able to finish.
Speaker 51 (01:36:44):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's that's just when you play him,
you know, that's he's strong, he's athletic, he's tough to
bring down, and that's just that's part of it. Our
guys played him plenty.
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
How big of an impact was it losing.
Speaker 35 (01:36:55):
Accessarily in the game that you did.
Speaker 51 (01:36:57):
I mean, I thought Dax was playing really good football
for us. He's worked really hard to get himself in
that position. I don't know what the final diagnosis is
gonna be yet. I'll hold off on that, but uh,
certainly heartbreaking for him to to work like he does.
Speaker 35 (01:37:11):
If it is, if it is a bad deal, that
you feel like.
Speaker 50 (01:37:14):
You have the guys to climb out of the whole.
Speaker 22 (01:37:16):
Nestely on defense, what gives you confidence that you guys
are gonna be able to play.
Speaker 9 (01:37:20):
At a higher level.
Speaker 51 (01:37:21):
I mean this is that's one of the best offenses
in football, and we played some really good offenses so
far this year, and and our defense has showed me
enough to know that we can win a lot of
games with these guys. They've proven that time and time again.
And and just because today, I know you're gonna look
at the the the scorecard and forty one points. Yeah,
that's that's not good enough. But I believe in those guys,
(01:37:42):
and I saw enough from each one of those guys
to continue to believe in them.
Speaker 6 (01:37:45):
Light Tide, what's the risk award?
Speaker 52 (01:37:46):
I'm trying to maybe get more or even after he
checks out on a second or throw down, even though
you're billiards. We're trying to get maybe a few more lords.
To make that case to the working closer.
Speaker 35 (01:37:55):
Doesn't even make it in that you gotta start what'side
of ball you talking about? To start them over time,
you'll get the ball back.
Speaker 52 (01:37:59):
Excuse I wouldn't wish for more potentially trying to get
you know, maybe doubt more rest of plates, get more yards.
Speaker 51 (01:38:05):
Zach holding penalty, all the things that can knock you back,
you know, so when you're in field goal range and
you believe in your kicker, it really.
Speaker 2 (01:38:11):
Is as simple as that, Hm. But it's not as
simple as that. Now I don't I don't even know
what to make of this anymore. I've watched I've watched
the sideline, I've watched the end zone, and I've watched
the broadcast copy of that first and tent Austin, and
it doesn't pick up going up to the line. But
(01:38:34):
I've yet to see any copy of Joe Burrow adjusting
any call. And again, maybe he did, and maybe he
did prior to the snap. I don't know. But some
of the answer, it's just it doesn't add up to me,
and it's it's so frustrating watching this team and I get,
I get the conversation around Henry. Look, Derek Henry fifteen
(01:38:56):
finished with fifteen carries for ninety two yards. He had
three carries for sixty two yards in the overtime period.
He had thirty yards rushing going into overtime. They did
do a better job on Derrick Henry. Why they decided
to blitz Lamar Jackson when it was not getting home,
especially in the third and fourth quarter when they had
three different ten point leads, is something that I just
(01:39:19):
I can't get on board with. I listen to that,
and I know the players do, and I worry about
now the locker room going forward. How can it be
a good locker room right now? You're already pissed because
you're one and four. It adds more attention because the
offense is elite and the defense is terrible. And now
(01:39:41):
your head coach is essentially standing by decisions that he
made that in hindsight, cost him the game. Where's the
positivity in this, Austin? I mean, what is the concern level?
Speaker 12 (01:39:54):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:39:54):
H Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:39:57):
I mean I don't know what to say. I don't
agree with that mentality, period, point blank. That Zach reference
right there, and where do you go from here? I
don't know. You know, you can't ask much more out
of the offense. It's impossible to be perfect. You can
strive for it all you want. That's fine. Perfection is
(01:40:20):
unattainable by anybody. It just can't happen, especially in the
National Football League. And what more can the offense do?
I don't know. And just to be so to have
such a brain dead moment as a head coach, to me,
just is inexcusable. I'm not saying fire Zach Taylor. I
(01:40:40):
don't know that that fixes anything. It's just looking at
this team. What a complete failure from top to bottom
by the organization to not put together a championship level team.
And that includes coaches, that includes players, that includes injuries,
and it's just it's hard because you wanted so much
(01:41:01):
more out of this season and they've had all these
games where they've combined to lose. They've combined to lose
by what fifteen points, and so you know that it's
not that far off, but at one and four, it's
it's a pipe dream to make it to the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
Yesterday they gave up five hundred and twenty yards of
total offense, and Zach Taylor says that he has seen
enough of the defense to believe in them. What is
he watching? Why? Why can we not hold the defense accountable?
Why can he not get up on the podium and say,
(01:41:39):
you know what, the defense isn't good enough right now?
That performance out there is not conducive to winning football.
We scored thirty eight points as an offense. We feel good.
Yes there are mistakes to clean up, but the play
of the defense right now is not acceptable and these
players need to be held accountable. Why is that hard
to say because you're the players coach, because you don't
(01:42:00):
want to go back on that, because you just sound
lost in my opinion, what have you seen in this
defense that makes you say, why we believe in the defense.
How about just holding guys accountable. That's going to go
a lot further. The defense wasn't good enough. We scored
thirty eight points and on defense, we gave up five
(01:42:23):
hundred and twenty yards. We didn't force a third down
for god knows how long. We let Lamar Jackson do
whatever he wanted. We need to be better defensively. How
are you pitching that the defense was good? How are
you pitching that you're seeing enough out of the defense
to believe in them comes across like Austin. That would
(01:42:45):
be like me and you get getting on the air
today and say, hey, this team's fine, this team's fine,
look at the schedule coming up. They'll get back. People
would think that we were crazy, and people would stop
listening because they would come across as fake, yeah or untrue.
Who out there listens to that and says, yeah, you
(01:43:05):
know what, I can see it? The defense has been
good enough, not me. And to hear the head coach
say that that's hard, that's tough. Hear from the quarterback
of the Bengals when we get back. Joe Burrow also
had things to say to the media. Will play some
of those on the other side of the break the

Speaker 2 (01:45:04):
Welcome back, since he three to sixty rolled along an
hour number three on the Monday midday Quarterback. Thanks to
our friends at Penn Station. A couple of minutes ago,
we heard from Zach Taylor. We reacted to Zach Taylor
and now the quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, clearly frustrated
after yesterday's forty one thirty eight loss in overtime to
the Baltimore Ravens. Here is from Joe Burrow.
Speaker 28 (01:45:23):
You know, we had our opportunities, didn't take advantage of him.
Speaker 10 (01:45:30):
They made plays down the stretch.
Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
He take us through the interception.
Speaker 10 (01:45:35):
Yeah, it was man to man. Jamona Slanton.
Speaker 2 (01:45:41):
Took a shot.
Speaker 28 (01:45:46):
You know, he made a really good play. I'm not
sure I would have made any any other decision than that.
Credit to him, honestly, Tamar.
Speaker 35 (01:45:56):
Took plays for that after the game, Joe, because it said.
Speaker 37 (01:45:58):
He ran a really route.
Speaker 26 (01:46:01):
Your thoughts on you jamorrow was where you expected him
to be when you let.
Speaker 37 (01:46:06):
Go of the ball.
Speaker 28 (01:46:07):
You know, Marlon Marlin's a great player. Uh you know
we made plays. They made plays. Uh, so that's that's
a credit to him. You know, he's he's a smart,
savvy player, knows what we're trying to do in that
situation and uh uh played it perfect over the overtime.
Speaker 12 (01:46:25):
Ha.
Speaker 35 (01:46:25):
You you guys recovered the fumble.
Speaker 36 (01:46:26):
Would you would like to had a chance to throw
a pass or two.
Speaker 37 (01:46:28):
On the drug?
Speaker 10 (01:46:30):
Mm?
Speaker 28 (01:46:31):
I mean as good as their rushes, you always take
a chance at getting sacked in that situation.
Speaker 10 (01:46:37):
We're in field goal range. Uh, you know they made
a kick down the stretch and we didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:46:43):
Exactly if you checked out of the pass?
Speaker 37 (01:46:45):
Yes today because it sad think it was.
Speaker 10 (01:46:48):
Trying to make sure it wasn't a good look for
the one we I called.
Speaker 35 (01:46:52):
I know, you guys are executing at a high level on.
Speaker 2 (01:46:55):
Offense and you're putting up the points week after week,
but when you're at one in four D feel like.
Speaker 20 (01:47:00):
At some point you guys need some sort of change
in your week tweek preparation to be able to finish
some of these games.
Speaker 2 (01:47:06):
To get your season going the way you need it.
Speaker 28 (01:47:08):
Let me st have to make plays down the stretch.
We're playing really well on offense. You know, I don't
know what the what the league stats are, but we're.
Speaker 2 (01:47:18):
One and four.
Speaker 10 (01:47:19):
That's that's not where we wanna be. So obviously something
has to change.
Speaker 28 (01:47:26):
You know, I'm I'm not sure what that is.
Speaker 2 (01:47:31):
On our end.
Speaker 28 (01:47:31):
We'll uh, we'll do some critical thinking, watch the tape
and see where we could have done better. There's plenty
to improve on. That's uh, that's no secret. So we'll
treat it just like any other week, come back, get better.
Speaker 12 (01:47:46):
Well, I guess to that point, obviously you can't play defense,
so do you guys usit offense?
Speaker 40 (01:47:51):
View this as the way that you're playing.
Speaker 2 (01:47:54):
You're gonna have to keep scoring as many points as you.
Speaker 21 (01:47:56):
Are to be able to give your guys a chance,
yourself as when.
Speaker 10 (01:48:00):
Each game, we're gonna have to do more.
Speaker 28 (01:48:02):
We're gonna have to do whatever it takes to win,
and uh, you know, so forth, so far, three out
of four games, we haven't done enough.
Speaker 10 (01:48:08):
So, uh, you know, I'll put that on me. I'll
put that on on.
Speaker 28 (01:48:14):
Us to to go and finish finish it when we
get our opportunities to h I'll just say the.
Speaker 52 (01:48:19):
Boys that go fort championship level team to play with
that little of a rgin to bele to play basically
better than what.
Speaker 10 (01:48:26):
Y'all go and play off that we're not a championship
level team right now, we're not.
Speaker 4 (01:48:33):
You know.
Speaker 28 (01:48:33):
I I like to think that, you know, we'll come
back and improve throughout the season to to get to.
Speaker 10 (01:48:38):
That point, but right now we are not. And we
have to get better cause for.
Speaker 52 (01:48:41):
Sure mean that you five weeks but still not at
that level that feel about it might be play of
the season.
Speaker 2 (01:48:47):
Yes, how can you help the defense?
Speaker 7 (01:48:49):
I know obviously you can't physically help them, but from
a leadership standpoint, some of the guys.
Speaker 44 (01:48:54):
Can you can you help them along that way?
Speaker 40 (01:48:56):
How can you help the defense?
Speaker 17 (01:48:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 28 (01:48:58):
They made plays today, you know, they they came up,
we got a safety, big time play. They played really
well in that first half and you know, we we
missed some opportunities in that first half. You know, we
got it rolling on offense eventually, but so did they.
And you know, guys on defense made place today. I'm
(01:49:20):
sure that there's ones that they want back, just like
there's ones that I want back, and so we'll come
back and improve the dry ran before.
Speaker 2 (01:49:30):
Over time to get it back with I been a
thirty left. Is it just the sack puts you behind
the chains and puts you in a tough spot.
Speaker 28 (01:49:36):
Yeah, sack puts you behind the chains.
Speaker 10 (01:49:40):
And then if you figure what it was, it was a.
Speaker 28 (01:49:44):
You know, I stepped up in the pocket and threw
on a tee that we didn't connect on and then
it was third and seventeen, so they didn't have any timeouts.
You got, you gotta run it there and just play
for overtime. At that point, the odds of getting a
third and seventeen or are to none, and you don't
want to give it back to them with it would
(01:50:05):
have been probably you know, thirty five forty seconds at
that point, just needing a field goal to win. So, yeah,
Sach hurt. They they played that concept that we had
really well. You know, there was not really awhare for
me to go with the ball quickly. You know, that's
(01:50:25):
a really really good defense. They made it hard on
me all day. You know, we made plays, but uh,
it was there. Damn sure, wasn't anything easy out there, you.
Speaker 37 (01:50:36):
Understand, Zach's feeling when you go on the field that
thirty eight they're thirty eight to start out, or when
you get the ball in overtime, not to take chances
and lose the yardage.
Speaker 2 (01:50:45):
There you understand that philosophy.
Speaker 35 (01:50:48):
I do have rather been more aggressive.
Speaker 28 (01:50:51):
You know, I'm not going to second guess that we're
we're in field goal range. You know, we go into
every week and on game day understanding field goal range
on each side of the field, and.
Speaker 10 (01:51:07):
Yeah, you want to get some yards to make it
easier on them.
Speaker 28 (01:51:11):
But also that defense is really good and makes the
negative plays happen all the time. So if you know,
you drop back and and get sacked or sack bumble,
they have a really good rush.
Speaker 41 (01:51:25):
Uh.
Speaker 28 (01:51:26):
You know, I'm not gonna second guess that one. We
had a shot to win it and we didn't take
advantage of it.
Speaker 48 (01:51:31):
So even said during the week that I thought you
had to play in your perfect today, and then the
roles four yards five.
Speaker 51 (01:51:38):
Touchdowns, first time I care to do that, and then
the interception.
Speaker 48 (01:51:42):
Do you think I mean you can play even better
than I would were playing today.
Speaker 28 (01:51:46):
Yeah, there's always room to improved by by no means
was it perfect. That's always what I'm striving for. You know,
I my my statement rang true today.
Speaker 10 (01:51:57):
You know it was perfect. Was what was needed, and
that's not what we did.
Speaker 2 (01:52:03):
All right, good stuff there, putting into perspective the thoughts
of where the Cincinnati Bengals are and more from Joe Burrow.
We'll hear from him again, I believe Wednesday this week.
But for now we carry on. I'm heading out to
Twin Peaks in Florence. Come on down for the Tony
and Mo Football Show. Austin has it the rest of
the way, the Monday Midday Quarterback on the home of
the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. High prices
(01:52:26):
are like a moneyback. You sucking your wallet, drush, No.
Speaker 5 (01:52:30):
But ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:52:38):
Welcome back Monday Midday Quarterback here on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:52:43):
I'm not a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:52:44):
I'm Austin Homore, Tony Pike Moeggar coming up thirty minutes
from right now, Tony and Mo Football Show live from
Twin Peaks in Florence this afternoon. They'll be there three
to six. You'll hear from the head coach of the
Bengals Zach Taylor. He will meet with the media again
coming up in a little bit. Tony and mo will
have that covered for you. A couple pieces of information
(01:53:08):
that just dropped over the last couple of minutes. Tom
Pellasero of NFL Network is reporting that the Cincinnati Bengals
are signing a guard by the name of Andrew Stuber
off of the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Stuber is six
foot seven three twenty pounds twenty five years old out
(01:53:28):
of Michigan. In his final season at Michigan, he started
all fourteen games at right tackle and was part of
an offensive line unit that earned the Joe Moore Award,
annually given to the top offensive line in the nation.
He was an All Big Ten honoree first team coaches,
third team in media. So a guy that appears to
(01:53:50):
be a solid player. He's been on the Falcons practice squad,
so the Bengals have signed him. That means when you
sign a player off the act, off the practice squad,
he has to come on to your active roster. So
expect to be a change or a move corresponding to
happen for the Bengals. Obviously expecting Dax Hill to go
to injured reserves since his season is over, But we'll
(01:54:12):
see how that happens and if they decide to bring
a cornerback in considering the fact that Dax is now
out for the year. But that is the latest in
terms of that. Andrew Stuber apparently being signed by the
Bengals from the Falcons practice squad. A couple of stats
here for you on yesterday, as we continue to sift
(01:54:33):
through the sludge of disappointment that is the twenty twenty
four Bengals. Austin Gaale from The Ringer says that the
Bengals offense is averaging zero point nine four EPA per
drive that is, expected points added per drive, and they
are scoring an actual two point nine to four points
(01:54:54):
per drive. That is, those two numbers are the best
for the Bengals franchise in week one through five since
at least two thousands over the last twenty five seasons.
The Bengals defense is allowing two point seven to three
points per drive, which is the worst number for the
franchise in weeks one through five since at least two thousand.
(01:55:18):
So just continues to be the yin and the yang
of the Bengals having such a great offense and such
a bad defense. They've now scored thirty points in three
consecutive games. They scored thirty three in a loss to Washington,
thirty four in the win over Carolina, and thirty eight yesterday,
(01:55:41):
and in those games they are one and two. John
Sheeran from A to Z Sports said that prior to that,
the Bengals were seventeen and three over the last Let
me see exactly how this is worded here. They entered
this season seventeen and three when scoring at least thirty
(01:56:03):
points in the Borough Era, seventeen and three while scoring
at least thirty points in the Borough Era, and they
are one and two in their last three, with losses
to Washington and now to Baltimore. Just frustrating, Just unbelievably frustrating,
(01:56:23):
Like I find myself in this feeling of anger that
it got to this point, this feeling of confusion that
how is it this bad? And just wondering like how
does it get fixed? Like I don't know what the
solution is for the defense right now? You fire lu
(01:56:44):
Ane Rumo, that's cool, if you want to do that,
that's fine. What is that gonna make the defensive line
play better. Is that gonna bring Dax Hill back from injured?
Is that gonna make Von Bell take a better pursuit angle?
Is it gonna speed up Genostone? Like, if you fire
the guys, does it make the players better all of
a sudden, I don't know if it does. People can,
(01:57:07):
you know, bitch and moan and complain about Zach Taylor
all they want. Zack's not going anywhere. And I don't
really have a change in feeling the way I feel
about Zach now than I did a week ago, or
a month ago or a year ago. I'm still a
believer in Zach Taylor. But he screwed up yesterday and
(01:57:29):
didn't take responsibility for it in the postgame press conference,
and a guy who has been open about the fact
that he learned from screwing that up in the past
when they lost to San Francisco just seems out of
character for him, and I'm bothered by that. Maybe that's
his frustration with the defense because this is his offensive
(01:57:51):
unit that is firing on all cylinders. I don't know,
but just the way that that was handled did not
sit right with me. I'm not saying this is a
Iro Bull offense. I think what's frustrating is that there
have been all these close losses and these moments where
you put the first game on Joe Burrow more than anything,
(01:58:11):
I would think the second game, they had a chance
to go and win it, they couldn't run out the
clock to give the ball back to Patrick Mahomes. You
have a bad defensive play call on fourth and sixteen
and a bad play by a rookie and Dejon Anthony
that loses you a game. You really don't look great
against the Carolina Panthers, especially defensively, but you find a
(01:58:31):
way to win. You play a near perfect game on
offense on Monday Night Football against the Commanders, but Jaden
Daniels plays an even better one. You can't get a
stop to save your life on that one. And then
you have a chance to really flip the whole attitude
of this season with a huge win against the Baltimore
(01:58:52):
Ravens and go one to zero in the division and
really have a chance to reset, especially with New York
and Cleveland coming up, and you lose the way you
lost there, and more than anything, I put the blame
on the head coach. Like to me, it is inexcusable
to lose games of that matter. And Joe was right.
(01:59:14):
This is not a championship caliber team right now. It
simply is not. And that's a tough reality to deal with.
And I think it really set in for me after
the Carolina game, because you know, I kind of wanted
them to go out and just beat Carolina, like forty
seven to ten. You know, I thought that would feel good,
make me feel like, all right, we're figuring some stuff
(01:59:36):
out here.
Speaker 39 (01:59:37):
No.
Speaker 3 (01:59:38):
You know, I'd never been more disappointed after a win
in my life, and I knew it was because it
doesn't matter what happens. This defense isn't good enough for
this team to win anything, and the season's basically shot.
Speaker 2 (01:59:50):
It's over.
Speaker 3 (01:59:52):
I don't want to be that guy who's just, you know,
quitting on everybody, But how can you look at the
five games and think otherwise. This team's not good. Offense
is awesome. Offense is fun, that's great. I will enjoy
watching that. I will root hard for Joe Burrow like
I always do. I will root hard for this team
to win, but I can't. A thing that sucks about
(02:00:17):
this is that you've robbed the fans of this feeling
of it's gonna be a great week. Now you're not
looking forward to Sunday night football this week, You're not
looking forward to going to pay Course Stadium to watch
a game.
Speaker 2 (02:00:33):
They're zero to three at home.
Speaker 3 (02:00:36):
Now, Sundays feel like this awful thing that you've got
to find a way to get through. How are they
going to ruin my week? This week? Is kind of
how you think about it now. I'm not at that point.
I don't let football games ruin my day anymore, but
there are people who do, and those people don't deserve this.
This team was supposed to be better than that, and
(02:00:59):
now it's something almost that you dread watching them play
because the expectations were so high and you know that
the players are so good and you're gonna have this
season that is now lost, right after you lost another
season due to injuries last year. It's hard to win
the NFL. And I just keep coming back, and I
(02:01:22):
keep asking myself, was I blind to the fact that
this team maybe hasn't changed enough. Did I drink the
kool aid too much? Because I look around and yeah,
there are different you know, players to blame coaches, to
blame officials, to blame if you want to do that,
(02:01:45):
But shouldn't the blame be on Mike Brown, Katie Blackburn,
Duke Tobin. They have failed to surround Joe Burrow with
the pieces necessary to win games like yesterday. They have
failed with draft picks. They have failed with free agent signings.
They have failed with re signing their best players. The
(02:02:10):
defense is old and slow and young and stupid simultaneously,
which is unbelievable. But it's true. And I don't put
that on Joe. I don't put that on Zach. I
put that on Duke. I put that on Mike. I
put that on Katie, and I fear after the circus
we had this offseason, and the circus we had with
Jesse Bates, and the circus we had with t Higgins,
(02:02:33):
and the circus you had years ago with Andrew Whitworth,
maybe nothing really has changed, and that's a shame. I
thought that this organization had really turned itself in the
right direction. I thought that things were different, and I
haven't been convinced this season, this offseason coming into it
(02:02:57):
that they really have. I gave them the benefit of
the doubt. I believed in them. I said, I don't
think they need to sign any more corners, and I
think this d line will be interesting.
Speaker 2 (02:03:06):
And no, I was wrong. I was wrong.
Speaker 3 (02:03:11):
I should have been more critical of those decisions. I
gave them the benefit of the doubt. They didn't deserve it.
And the way that all of this has been handled,
it just makes me fear. And I know I'm not alone.
I know a lot of Bengals fans feel this way.
It makes me fear that man, maybe they actually did
(02:03:32):
miss this window, maybe they screwed this up that bad
that there's no way out of this. I hope I'm wrong.
I hope I'm just overreacting on a Monday, but I
can't help but allow my mind to go there. Frustrating,
really really frustrating. And I hope that this team and
(02:03:56):
in some way, shape or form, they look around and say, Okay,
things have to be different.
Speaker 2 (02:04:02):
I don't know how to do.
Speaker 15 (02:04:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:04:03):
Maybe it's Joe Burrow leading from the front, maybe it's
Zach Taylor. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:04:08):
But you cannot continue to build teams this way and
expect to compete because the product they have put on
the field on defensive side of the ball is embarrassing.
Embarrassing injuries or otherwise it's embarrassing. Check in with Tony
and Mo from Quick Hits and Locks of the Night. Next,
this is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 40 (02:04:28):
Journey Sincy three sixty continues on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's
sports station. It's time for Sincy three sixty Quick Hits
on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (02:04:40):
It's time for everybody's favorite part of the show, Quick
Hits and Locks of the Night, to be joined by
everybody's favorite talk show host Mo Egger.
Speaker 2 (02:04:46):
Hi, Mo, how are you?
Speaker 6 (02:04:48):
I am neither anyone's favorite talk show hosts. It's the
favorite part of this show.
Speaker 3 (02:04:53):
You're my favorite talk show host? Well thanks, yeah, no problem,
very kind of you. Bengals lost again. That's stunk big time.
Speaker 6 (02:05:01):
One hundred and five points over the last three games,
and they've won one of those games. That's not how
it's supposed to be. I don't believe the season is over.
Speaker 2 (02:05:11):
Okay.
Speaker 6 (02:05:12):
I don't believe the season is over because the offense
is too good for them to go into a downward
spiral where they're playing meaningless football in late November. But
the ceiling for this team is significantly lower than we
thought it was because of the limitations of the defense.
And one thing I talk about, maybe more than others,
(02:05:33):
is wasting good health, right, wasting good health. When the
Reds didn't beat the Giants in twenty twelve, my first
take was the Reds had great health this year and
blew it. And then what happens the next season Johnny
Quato missus twenty starts like year to year. So the
Bengals offensively right now are insanely healthy, and because of
(02:05:55):
that health, they're hard to defend. I guess unless it's overtime,
and you know, that's the nature of the sport dictates
that's not going to continue, right. Attrition's a big part
of this game. Attrition's a big part of this sport.
You've gotten a healthy Joe Burrow and upright Joe Burrow
for the most part, and you know, just weapons all
over the joint and you're one in four. And so
when attrition starts to take its toll offensively the way
(02:06:18):
it has on defense, what's this going to look like?
It's a really really frustrating time to be a Bengals fan,
really frustrating time. And this means we have to have
a couple of conversations today that I don't think a
lot of people are.
Speaker 2 (02:06:30):
Going to want to have. Okay, what are those conversations?
Speaker 6 (02:06:33):
You'll find out at three oh five.
Speaker 2 (02:06:35):
Did Zach Taylor coach scared yesterday?
Speaker 6 (02:06:37):
Yes, he coached scared and he's coach stupid.
Speaker 2 (02:06:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (02:06:41):
You know, you and Tony have have kind of sifted
through all the different scenarios in overtime yesterday, and like you,
I defer to his expertise. And but the first thing
I thought in real time was, Okay, they're running it here,
because I looked at the personnel on the field, and
I looked at the formation, and so if it was
(02:07:01):
well Joe changed the play and it was going to
be a pass, Well you didn't have the right personnel
on the field for it to be a pass.
Speaker 2 (02:07:07):
Yeah, did you? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:07:08):
He said it was not a Joe's words where it
was not a good look for the past we had called.
Speaker 6 (02:07:13):
Yeah, I just I don't understand it. But it's you know,
I've called Joe Burrow Zach Taylor's meal ticket because he is.
Joe Burrow is the reason why Zach Taylor is employed.
He is the reason why Zach Taylor is enjoying a
nice salary and a contract extension. He is the reason
why he is a Super Bowl coach. Why you wouldn't
(02:07:34):
cash in your meal ticket in that situation. Yeah, a
game on the line at home, you're trying to avoid
falling to one and four. The Ravens have just given
you a gift in overtime, and you decide to hold
onto your meal ticket, and then, like Zach, even after
the game, is like, well, in the first outplay we
gained some yardage? Did it was second to ten?
Speaker 2 (02:07:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (02:07:55):
I there's a lot of times where I feel like
ripping an NFL head coaches is a little bit too
easy and too gratuitous. Not in this case.
Speaker 3 (02:08:06):
Yeah, it felt like, you know, there's been games they've
lost because of their defense. There was a game they
lost because of their offense. You lose with players if
you're gonna lose, And it felt like the coach lost
them the game yesterday.
Speaker 2 (02:08:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (02:08:19):
And look, I've heard and read the argument that the
previous two drives, you know, they had to pick, which
you can't have happen. Sure, and they had a sack
on the last drive of regulation and you can't have
that happen. But I think one hundred out of one
hundred Bengals fans if I say, okay, game is on
the line and we're gonna give Joe Burrow a chance
(02:08:39):
to make a play, We'll live with him not being
able to make a play or somebody sacking him, and
now you're at a field goal range. And by the way,
if you're at a field goal range, let's say, let's
say he gets sacked on first and ten, and now
it's second and seventeen. Okay, I still have two downs
with Jamar Chase, who was absolutely having an unbelievable day.
T Higginson is having a productive day, and Joe Burrow
to make up that yardage and get myself back into
(02:09:00):
field goal range. Like, you can get knocked out of
field goal range. There's no rule that says you can't
get back in, right. It's not like some bad nightclub.
You can get knocked out of field goal range and
then okay, well the next play, let's get back into
field goal range.
Speaker 4 (02:09:15):
It is.
Speaker 6 (02:09:17):
You guys have talked about it a lot, and and
the more you've talked about it, the more frustrated I
have gotten, right, because I just it's it's one thing
to lose, and you're right, players, Lamar Jackson was awesome yesterday,
Like he was awesome, They're not going to take away
your Bengals jersey if you say that he was terrific.
He is a terrific player. He made some individual plays
(02:09:38):
that show why he is a two time MVP. Good
for him and the Bengals didn't make some plays. Joe
Burrow throws a pick that can't happen. Their deficiency, deficiencies
on defense came through the the the the decision to
go into a shell, not cashing the meal ticket, and
as you put it, play scared. When you have this
(02:09:58):
unbelievable asset that your offense as a whole just is.
It's confusing, it's confounding, it's maddening. And I can't wait
to spend the next three hours talking about.
Speaker 3 (02:10:09):
Uh, how worried are you about the locker room? Because
Tony seems to be very worried about that.
Speaker 6 (02:10:14):
You know, I'm not worried about it now because look,
I appreciate Jamar and T's honesty after the game, and
I would expect them to say, like, dude, I wanted
a chance to put my fingerprints on how the game ended.
And neither got a chance. I don't worry so much
about the locker room now because it's still no one
wants to hear this. It's still early and there's still time.
(02:10:40):
What I worry about is what this is going to
look like in mid November, if there's not significant improvement,
and for the first time in this era, the Bengals
are playing out the string. I kind of don't think
that's going to be the case, because again, offensively, they're
cooking right now. But I don't worry so much about,
(02:11:02):
like the locker room being tore apart. But I certainly
would be unsurprised if I found out that there was frustration.
If you're an offensive player, how are you not frustrated? Yeah,
if you're Jamar Chase, how are you not frustrated? If
you're Joe Burrow, how are you not frustrating that unit?
You know, Joe said last week, I've got to be
(02:11:24):
damn near perfect, and unfortunately he wasn't. Yeah right, he
made two mistakes, but he was pretty damn close to perfect.
They scored thirty eight points at home and lost. Like dot.
I don't worry about that tearing apart the team because
I do think a lot of the individuals the Bengals have,
(02:11:45):
but put yourself in the shoes of any one of
those offensive players today, yesterday, two weeks ago, today, and
the day after the Washington game. Specifically, you've done everything
you can to win and you didn't. How was How
is that not just deeply, deeply frustrating to you.
Speaker 2 (02:12:06):
Let's get to Locks of the.
Speaker 53 (02:12:07):

Speaker 2 (02:12:20):
Now let's make you some money. We have about forty
seconds here. What do you got tonight?
Speaker 6 (02:12:25):
Chiefs are playing great, but you know what, they do
find ways to win. So today five and a half
point dogs tonight against New Orleans. I like the Saints
in this game to cover the number. PFF's highest graded quarterback,
the best red zone defense in the league, and their
fifth defensively, and expected points added per pass they gave
away that game against Atlanta this week or last week,
(02:12:47):
they should be three and one. I think the Saints
cover the number, but Kansas City will probably do what
championship teams do, which is tight game, figure out away
like we can complain about it right, Oh, the Chiefs
and either reps. The championship teams figure out a way.
The Bengals are not a championship team. Joe Burrow said
it yesterday. Yeah, figure out a way to win the game.
In casey, they know how to do that. Here, we don't,
(02:13:09):
but I do, like New Orleans with the number.
Speaker 3 (02:13:11):
All right, there it is Moe Egger coming up with
the Tony and Mo Football Show. Mo, thanks so much,
thank you. All right, Moe is coming up next. You'll
hear from Zach Taylor. This is the Home of the Bengals.
