official home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
All right, welcome in Happy Monday if you choose to
celebrate those types of things.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
No, it's not.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
It's not the happiest of Mondays. Quite frankly thought in
my mind there, how long can I just let this
roll without having to even start the show? Four minutes
if you want? All right, three minutes and nineteen seconds more.
You know, Austin, when the idea came about for the
Monday Midday Quarterback, Yeah, it was meant to be a
(01:57):
show of hope and optimism and excitement because of what
was meant to be this season for the Cincinnati Bearcats
when they started five and two for the Ohio State
buck Guys.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
No, no, don't you don't get to do that.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Twenty one point favorite two the Michigan Wolverines, you don't
get to do that. And of course the Super Bowl aspirations, yes,
super Bowl aspirations that were set in place here in
this great, beautiful, amazing city of Cincinnati, and over the
course of this weekend things have come crashing down more
(02:37):
so than they have for much of this season. We'll
dive into the game and the thirteen to ten loss
still feels hard to say, thirteen to ten at home.
We'll talk about that loss. We'll talk about ball eligibility.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
On the line.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
After the Cincinnati Bearcats started five and two and then
lost their next five, including a disaster of a performance
on Saturday Night, dropping the Bearcats to five and seven
and effectively ending their season. And while we talk about
seasons ending, as we welcome seasons greetings here for the
(03:17):
Christmas season, the Bengals season ended, and.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yes it did end.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
I'm no longer and we're no longer in a situation
where we could talk about, let's just win the next
five and see what happens at nine and eight. This
year is done, some would say, and I know Austin's
one of them. That this season has been done. And
yet we picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and by
the end of the week, or the end of a
(03:46):
bye week, which we'll talk about more, the Bengals they
let us down again, and they did so in fashion
that Pittsburgh hadn't done since two thousand and eight. Team
that was score over forty one points in a football game.
The Steelers yesterday had twenty seven at the half. They
(04:08):
had only eclipsed twenty seven points three times this season.
They got over forty one, which they hadn't done since
twenty eighteen, ultimately beating the Cincinnati Bengals forty four to
thirty eight yesterday at home. Now stick with me here, Austin,
because yesterday at home, it was coming off of a
bye week, it was the season on the line, it
(04:30):
was your playoff chances on the line, and it was
a division opponent. And yet the Bengals yesterday put together
their worst defensive output of the season. This is the
same Pittsburgh Steeler team that I watched not be able
to move the ball against the Cleveland Browns the week before.
(04:52):
It was the same Pittsburgh Steelers who needed six field
goals and zero touchdowns to beat the Baltimore Ravens. Yes,
that Steelers team came in and dog walked the Bengals
forty four to thirty eight. Again, with the season on
the line for the Cincinnati Bengals, we have so much
(05:13):
that we need to get to. Here on the Monday
midday quarterback, I'm here until midway through hour number three
and then I'm gonna head to Twin Peaks in Florence
and rehash three more hours of the disaster from yesterday.
But we'll try to sort through as much as we can.
It started wonderfully. Now some could argue for past interference,
(05:39):
but it wasn't called, so we'll stay it started wonderfully
because the Bengals defensively scored a touchdown yesterday. Cam Taylor
britt getting physical with George Pickens at the line of scrimmage,
picks off of Russell Wilson pass and it's seven to nothing,
and you think, Okay, this is what we do. This
(05:59):
is what we talked about for the last two weeks.
Defense has got to play better against a terrible offense
in the Pittsburgh Steelers, and if the defense just plays average,
they'll win the game. Because offensively they're not going to
be stopped, and for the most part yesterday they weren't stopped. Now,
(06:20):
Joe Burrow did get sacked and stripped of the ball,
which resulted in a touchdown for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
So it's not all.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Forty four points on the Bengals defense, and it's not
all thirty eight points for the Bengals offense because Cam
Taylor Britt added to that. But offensively, they put up
thirty one points against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And let's just
start there, Austin, if you and I are talking before
the game yesterday and we have seen what the Pittsburgh
(06:50):
Steelers had done in the previous weeks nineteen points, eighteen points. Hell,
even in their wins twenty eight to twenty six. If
I said, Austin, the Bengals will score thirty eight points,
you would have said, what, there's a good chance they win,
good chance that they win against a terrible Pittsburgh Steelers offense. Instead,
(07:16):
they gave up forty four points with the season on
the line, coming out of a bye week against a
division opponent with the season on the line. The whole
game was bad and to culminate things and I know.
I think we tweeted the exact same thing, Austin, that
the fitting end to the game on the last play
of the game. We're granted the Bengals would only get
(07:39):
the ball back without with about a minute left down six,
but hell with this offense in a minute. Crazier things
have happened in the NFL, and Pittsburgh trotted Justin Fields
onto the field. Why was Justin Fields coming into the
game in all likelihood to run the ball correct? And
what did Justin Fields do? He ran the ball and
he walked seven yards for a first down, the epitome
(08:04):
of brutal play. It was a fitting end to an
embarrassing day at pay Course Stadium. And I will call
it like I see it. With this, Austin, I am
shocked right now that lu Ana Rumo or someone on
that defensive staff has not been let go. I have waited,
(08:25):
I've checked the updates, waiting because surely someone has to
answer for yesterday. No one has answered for yesterday.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
No one.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
The defensive side abysmal, absolutely abysmal. And we'll talk more
about defensive personnel decisions coming out of a buy. We'll
talk about poor tackling. Have you ever seen a team,
Austin that takes worse angles to a football.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
Yes, but that was the oh to twenty Sydney Yellowjackets
ten games in a row, back to back, and actually
I think we were probably a better tackling team than
the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
I watched some on Friday night of Moler. I'm not
so sure that Mohler wouldn't score on this defense right
now as good as Molar is. And that's a compliment
to Molar whose quarterback through for four hundred and thirty
yards and six touchdowns in the first half of a
state semifinal game. But the defense was awful. And here's
(09:24):
what rks me and the offenses that falled in this
as well. But I had people in my mentions yesterday
Austin saying some of this is on Joe Burrow too.
He turned the ball over three times. If Joe Burrow
doesn't turn the ball over, this team probably wins. And
I just I can't fathom typing something like that up
(09:49):
and actually hitting the send button on social media, because
if you watch these games at all, they are not
scoring points on scheme play design and comfortable pocket passing.
They are scoring touchdowns on jump passes. They are scoring
(10:11):
touchdowns on Joe Burrow being an absolute magician. They are
scoring touchdowns because Joe Burrow's greatness covers every other flaw
that this team has. Joe Burrow was getting smoked again yesterday.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Time and time and time again.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Eleven different quarterback hits, four sacks, asked to throw it
thirty eight times, and he still went over three hundred
with three touchdowns. He threw an interception Austin that got
tipped by Cam Hayward.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Right.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
The tip caused the pass to go high. It then
tips off the receiver right into the arms of the dB.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Tip twice. That's going to happen.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
He lost a fumble where Orlando Brown Junior looked like
my dad right now trying to get out of a
tackle stand.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Sorry, sorry, but it's true.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
I mean Orlando Brown Junior in the second half looked
like he had one leg, couldn't run, could not run.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
And was being asked to block for Joe Burrow's blind side. Yeah,
I know, Yeah, I know, strip sack.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Okay, was that Joe Burrow's fault that the tackle didn't
even touch a rusher? No, because he's still trying to
get the ball out quick and thrown it out of
a break which would have been completed had the tackle
just touched someone. And then finally, TJ. Wat's a pretty
good defensive player in this league. He's won multiple awards
in this league. What does Joe Burrow have to do?
(11:44):
Seemingly every time he drops back, escape, escape, extend the play,
and on one extension, TJ. Watt makes a good play
and pushes the ball out. But if you are someone
who after that game yesterday thought to get on social media,
type up a a tweet and say it's on Joe Burrow,
you are not watching the same sport I'm watching.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
It's actually funny as we're as we're talking right now,
apparently on first take, Shannon Sharp is blaming Joe Burrow.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Oh boy.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
And it's just a friendly reminder. And I posted this
just because you have a gold jacket doesn't mean you
know what you're talking about.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
M h.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
It's one of the craziest things I've ever witnessed is
seeing multiple tweets like that Dan Horde hit the nail
on the head. Tom Brady in his illustrious career, spanning
from the start of his career to the very end
he lost four total games when the offense scored thirty
three points or more when he was quarterback. Joe Burrow
(12:45):
has lost four games this year when the offense has
scored more than thirty three This year, he's lost four
of those games. And people are saying that that's on
Joe Burrow. What game are we watching?
Speaker 4 (12:58):
I will say that the people that I got those
accounts or those tweets from where people from Chiefs and
Ravens and Steelers accounts, Sure, people that are trolls. I
saw a couple of Bengals fans say that, Yeah. I
don't think we have to do a lot of convincing
to most people that yesterday is not on Joe Burrow.
(13:19):
Maybe he needs to do a better job of holding
the ball with two hands. Okay, I'll give you that.
But TJ Wat's a great player and he's gonna get
his and Orlando Brown Junior was a complete liability. Yeah,
and then sometimes Cam Hayward, who has been doing it
for a long time, Yep, makes a good play. Yep,
he gets his hands up and it just so happens
(13:40):
to be. How many times does that ball get tipped
and it goes back in the backfield correct where it
goes off somebody's helmet and onto the ground. Yep, this
just happened to go up into the air off the
hands of t Higgins and to Deshaun Elliott who had
gotten beat on the play and was so far out
of position at the ball landed.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
And it's a freak play.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Yeah, I can assure you that they're not watching film
and crushing Joe Burrow for that.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Now.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Offensively, I thought Chase Brown ran the ball extremely well yesterday.
Only twelve carries. Would love to see Chase Brown on
third and one, the way he was running the ball
get a chance to run it. This team continues to
fail on short yardage place.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
Alex Kappa was really bad yesterday. It was Cody Ford
was really bad yesterday. I think you know, I know
you brought it up during the game, the inability of
them to just kind of run the ball on short yardage.
They have no faith in those guys. None And Cam
Hayward and Larry Ogunjobi. They did whatever they want. Now,
(14:40):
they did whatever they wanted.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Now that's interesting because you mentioned Cody Ford. Cody Ford
started yesterday. Yeah, so they went into a bye week.
They said Okay, Cordell Volson hasn't been great. Let's try
Cody Ford. Did they make any other adjustments yesterday?
Speaker 3 (14:57):
They did. They decided to bench Von Bell for Jordan.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Okay, I get it. What's out there isn't working. Let's
try to figure out something that is. Can you explain
in your wildest imagination why changes were made on both
sides of the ball and Gino Stone was still in
the game yesterday.
Speaker 5 (15:19):
I cannot.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
It's It's really kind of all I've been thinking about is,
you know, I understand that Von Bell is probably slow
and not, you know, quite the player that he used
to be. But I don't think that there was a
worst player on the field than Stone. He was awful,
and I have a hard time believing that Dejon Anthony
(15:42):
or Tyson Anderson or literally anybody else would play that
position worse. Yeah, including Mike Hilton, who at times last
year played safety. I cannot like glue and Rumo has
done a lot of great things here, and you know,
what he did in twenty one and twenty two will
always be remembered. I cannot figure out what he's thinking
(16:06):
by continuing to put Genostone on the field.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
I don't get it. It makes no sense whatsoever. I
just don't.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
It's not like they're paying him twenty million dollars. Yeah,
he's getting paid like seven. And they've shown the ability
to bench people during games. You could have benched him
after the angle he took on the George Pickens touchdown,
and you just keep running him out there. How much
worse could it have gotten?
Speaker 2 (16:30):
How much worse can it be to take him out
of the game and put someone else in this This roster is.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Full of holes.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
To talk about Super Bowl Window, They're gonna lose t Higgins.
Their offensive line isn't as strong as we like to
think it is. They're gonna have holes, a wide receiver
next year, they need a number two running back, and
you can make an argument that at every spot on
the defensive side of the ball they need upgrades. It is,
(17:01):
without a doubt, one of the most embarrassing performances I
can remember watching as a fan, a lifelong fan of
the Cincinnati Bengals, not just what happened on the field,
because of what was at stake, who you were playing,
and the fact that you were coming out of a
bye game to do it.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
All by the way, according to Next Gen Stats, the
Bengals defense had missed fourteen tackles against the Steelers. That
is the tide for that is tied for the most
in a game this season, which was Week one against
New England, and they allowed ninety one yards after missed tackles.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Now, I want, I'm gonna, I'm gonna need you to
replay that stat at the top of the next segment
because we are gonna play some Jermaine pratut audio. And
I know you've not listened to this yet, so you're
gonna you're gonna get to react. Yesterday.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
You will get to react.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
I say this yesterday so that I could listen to
this on the air, Yeah and not you know, kind.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Of listen, dive in to it.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Listen to this before we get to a break from
Charlie Goldsmith yesterday. Think of everything that went wrong for
the Bengals last year. Joe Burrow missed half the year,
Higgins worst season, DJ Reader and Sam Hubbard were injured,
terrible safety play down years for Boyd A. Woozy and
the linebackers, and bad free agent signings. Last year. They
lost eight games the whole season. Yesterday was their eighth
(18:24):
loss already of twenty twenty four. It is such a failure.
What has happened this year with this Bengals team in
what was supposed to be a super Bowl team. I
can't even fathom it. And you will get to hear
one of the most preposterous postgame interviews. And I think
(18:45):
it's only two two and a half minutes, but what
Jermaine Pratt said after the game yesterday, I just I
question everything. I question what message is being sent in
that locker room during the week and during the game,
because it's the most out of touch comment I've ever heard.
We'll play that for you when we get back. We're
(19:05):
just getting started on a Monday midday quarterback on ESPN
fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station, thanks to our friends at
Skyline Chili.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
This is Football Innnetti, brought to you in part by
a door and window company, on the official home of
the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
All right, we're back on the Monday midday Quarterback on
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station, a service of Skyline Chili.
All right, there was locker room audio yesterday of Jermaine
Pratt after the game, and I I had to listen
(19:45):
to this twice, and I don't recall the use of
any curse words in this audio. We'll have the dumb
button ready. But I was so shocked.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
And listening thanks. That makes me feel better.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
I was so shocked and listening to the audio that
I feel like I just got caught up sometimes on
what was actually being said and coming out of the
mouth of Jermaine Proud. So before we play the Germaine
Proud audio, can you give the mistackle stat one more time?
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
The Bengals defense, according to Next Gen Stats, missed fourteen
tackles against the Steelers, which is tied for the most
in a game this season, while allowing ninety one yards
after miss tackles. It goes on to say that they
allowed nine miss tackles in the first half alone, and
the Bengals entered the week with the second lowest mistackle
rate league wide, so this is something they were actually
(20:32):
pretty good at, tackling just eleven percent. However, the unit
was without Logan Wilson, who has one of the best
mistackle rates in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Please play the Jermaine Proud audio from the locker room.
It's just two minutes. Joe Daniman posted this on his x.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Buckle in specifically, it's kind of the aunt of miss
tackles that kind of unfolded today.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
I'll think, wait, missed tackles now? Did you feel like
there were a lot of miss tackles today? Not that much.
I don't think everything that is. It was just getting
a batlot quick. It's a quick game and it's screens
that right screen. Mean, did you feel like you guys
were out of position at all? If they weren't miss tackles,
(21:17):
could it be a matter of not being in a
right position.
Speaker 6 (21:20):
I'm just saying like this, it was a screen, It
was a quick game. It wasn't literally they weren't doing
too much.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
It was been a quick What was most disappointing to
you about the defensive performance?
Speaker 6 (21:32):
We didn't win, So it's all the ways disappointed. It
don't matter about the defense we lost.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
Has there been a common theme in music pause? It
don't matter about the defense we lost.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
It don't matter school games you lost.
Speaker 6 (21:48):
Of course, was gotta find a way to win. You
can keep on saying that over and again. We ain't
find a way to win. Way, ain't createing, No turnover
to getting the bar back or win did at all defense?
Speaker 7 (22:01):
Is it especially hard to swallow the loss when you
give up more than five hundred offense?
Speaker 6 (22:07):
You know what I said, Like it was just screens
and then if we went zero, he just threw like
a quick quick.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
It was was quick that much to defend those screens
to say some success in the Why did they have
some success? The ball was out quick, that's all they were.
Speaker 8 (22:22):
Is that an adjustment that could have been made in
the game the way they.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
Were having so much success. I mean, you're throwing quick.
You know what the expect every level? Yeah, I think
everybody got Ever we didn't. We didn't give, we didn't quit.
I didn't see nobody quick, so they wont no effor level.
But dmaan, you know what the expectations are inside this
locker room. You've been here for a lot of winning seasons.
When you're foreign eight, what do you guys have.
Speaker 9 (22:44):
Up to play for?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Pride? Couldn't kind of way he's got.
Speaker 6 (22:47):
You're gonna fight. You know this this game is high
and low. It's like like you know, you keep on
getting knock down, you gotta get back up. It's like
keep on working preach your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Like I shout out everyone in the media that Kelsey
Commay was even like, you know, you gave up over
five hundred yards offense.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
They came up with multiple ways to give him a
chance to explain what he's talking about.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Correct, now, you mentioned fourteen miss tackles. He said they
didn't miss many tackles.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Yeah, he was wrong. Listen.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
I listened to a coach explained a couple of weeks
ago that the reason they didn't have and this was
at UC they didn't have much success in the passing
games because the defense was just dropping eight. It's like, oh,
well that's simple, just drop eight every play and a
team can't pass. From what I gathered there, did Arthur
Smith and the Pittsburgh Steelers figure out something that no
(23:38):
other team in the history of this game figured out yesterday?
That simply getting the ball out fast and running screens
will beat any type of defense.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
He's also just not really correct. I mean, Wilson was
eight of nine of passes over ten air yards.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Well, that's because they went covering to zero.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
In five yards and two touchdowns. He also, this is
what I said on Friday, the Steelers throw the ball deep.
If there's one thing they do, they go deep.
Speaker 10 (24:08):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
Russell Wilson has thrown a go route on fourteen point
eight percent of his pass attempts this season. That is
the second highest rate among quarterbacks with at least one
hundred attempts. So there were screens, there were quick passes.
I think a lot of times we saw the Bengals
drop coverage and a Steeler running back would leak out
(24:32):
fill that void, and Russ would just drop it down.
But instead of getting four yards like that play maybe
is designed to contain them, they would break a tackle
and get sixteen. And it wasn't until later in the
game that Louis and Ruo actually made a adjustment to
this where at one point Tony this is no bs
(24:55):
saw with my own eyeballs. J two Feley dropped back
in coverage to take away the dump off the check
down to the running back. Maybe don't do that, but
watching at home, the Steelers would spread you out. They
would basically go two tights and run four verts and
(25:16):
leak the leak the running back yep, and they would
dump it to the right. So they dump it to
the left, they dump they dump it in the.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Middle So what you're saying, though, is that they didn't
reinvent something that's never been seen before.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Correct.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
It's actually a pretty common thing and something we've seen
a lot from the Bengals at times, especially when teams
were taking away their deeper shots, because the Bengals probably
went into that game thing, hey, all right, listen, he
throws it deep. We can't get beat deep. And the
Steelers are like, okay, well, we're gonna hit you with
deep end crosses. We're gonna hit you underneath, we're gonna
bring your defense up. Then we're gonna go over the top.
That's exactly what they did.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
Us.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
Russ averaged over ten yards, almost eleven yards per completion.
He threw for four hundred yards. So to say that
they were, you know, just getting the ball out quick
first of five, I think he's he doesn't even realize
what he's saying. The ball was out of his hands quickly,
and they still kept getting yards. How is that right?
(26:09):
It's because you missed tackles Tormaine, so because you were
out of position. And somebody asked him, good question, do
you think you guys are out of position? He said, no,
they just got the ball out quick. That's hogwash.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
Well, you know what adjustments where we tried to blitz
and they got the ball out quick.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
And this is a dude who's paid a lot of
money that the Bengals invested in. That's my thing, and
has been here for a long time for some he
made the play, the play that broke the streak. You
can't take any accountabilities.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
You mane that's my thing. So here you have a
guy that you reinvested in. Do you chose to put
money back into to be a cornerstone for this organization?
A guy who before getting paid made a spectacle walking
off the sideline going at a player talking about he's
not used in the right way here. They bought back
(26:56):
into him. They use him now in what you think
would be the right way way. And on a game
where the defense got torched for over five hundred yards
by a terrible offense, he said they didn't miss a
lot of tackles and that they just got the ball
out quick and played screens. Do you know what level
(27:19):
of the defense is responsible in the most part for
quick game and screens? Linebackers? Did you watch it all
yesterday and think that Pittsburgh was doing something you've never
seen in the NFL before. No, Because that's how it
sounded like Jermaine Pratt was talking there. It sounded like
(27:40):
Pittsburgh and Arthur Smith, the genius that he is, has
held things back all year and waited till yesterday to
unleash them. Not against the Ravens when they didn't score
a touchdown offensively, not against the Steelers, but he held
everything back and waited to reinvent How often defence is
played in the National Football League? Is that what happened yesterday?
(28:05):
Because that's what it sounds like. Why isn't every team
just getting the ball out quick and running screens. You
can't blitz it, you can't cover it. Why wouldn't every
team do that? Makes no sense. There's zero accountability for anything,
zero accountability for anything in that locker room right now.
(28:29):
Do you know the only one that seems to be
taking accountability is Joe Burrow. I gotta be better. Did
Jermaine Pratt at any point in those two minutes say
I need to be better?
Speaker 3 (28:41):
Nope?
Speaker 2 (28:43):
How You're a key part of this defense that is
the worst in the NFL and was the worst in
the NFL last year, and at no part in those
two minutes, did I hear a linebacker who the team
reinvested in say, well, first and four most, I gotta
be better. We hear that from Joe Burrow, who is
(29:04):
doing things statistically that no one else is doing. I
did not hear Jermaine Pratt say I need to be
better first and foremost. I hold myself to a better standard.
I need to be better than what I was out there. Instead,
it was excuse after excuse after excuse after excuse. That
(29:28):
is culture locker room. That's accountability, and it's a damn
good understanding of just where this team is right now.
You gave up over five hundred yards and the most
points that a team has scored since twenty eighteen, and
(29:50):
not at one point of that interview did you say
you needed to be better. That is toxic in a
locker room, especially when the guy that's setting records and
doing unbelievable things is saying, before anything else, I've got
to be better. I can't make those plays. That is
(30:13):
a significant problem for the Cincinnati Bengals. We'll talk more
Bengals here as we go. Phone lines are open five
to one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen, thirty and of
course at some point Austin. This has become like a
thing over the last couple of years, and I don't
know why, because I keep things pretty square down the middle.
(30:34):
I got more mentions on Saturday about people excited for
today's show, all because Ohio State lost. So we'll have
to address that elephant in the room. We'll do so
at the top of our number two for now. More
Bengals and your phone calls five, one, three, seven, four nine,
fifteen thirty. It's the Monday Midday Quarterback on ESPN fifteen thirty,
(30:56):
Cincinnati Sports Station and a service of Skyline Chile.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
You've been listen litening to football in Thenetti on the
official home of the Bengals Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
I'm Bill Webber and I'm Adam Weber.
Speaker 11 (31:09):
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Welcome back Monday Midday Quarterback ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station,
a service of Skyline Chile. We will dive in to
the game Ohio State Michigan as well as UCS lost
to TCU. We're going to continue on with the Cincinnati
Bengals here. We've got some phone calls. I want to
(31:47):
dive into some of these calls. Uh, and hear from
you as well. Let's start with Mike, who's calling in
Cherry Grove was up, Mike, Hey, how's it going?
Speaker 12 (31:55):
Man?
Speaker 3 (31:55):
Well good? How are you?
Speaker 13 (31:57):
Oh you're talking about our buddy Pratt and guarantee the victory?
Speaker 9 (32:04):
Yes, he did and then didn't play.
Speaker 13 (32:07):
I mean, I'm watching that game. It was like, time
after time after time he throw the ball five or
six yards and if they didn't get a first down,
it was damn close. And I keep saying to myself,
do we have any linebackers on this team? I mean,
it was wide open? And then well, like on that
one touchdown pass I think it was touchdown, there's four
(32:30):
guys in the square around the receiver, but nobody's within
four yards of the guy, and he just walks into
the end zone. I mean, I started wonder what kind
of scheme are they trying to play? I couldn't tell
what the hell they were doing. Did they know what
the hell they were doing?
Speaker 2 (32:46):
That's the thing. It's one thing if a team like that.
There are plays that Joe Burrow makes over the course
of the game. The jump pass to Jamar Chase, the
touchdown pass that he had in the back corner of
the end zone to yoshibash where if you're a defense
you tip your cap and say that's a great play.
There were not many plays yesterday where I said, man,
Russell Wilson just beat him. It was easy pitch and catch.
(33:08):
Don't I don't understand how coming out of a bye week,
that was the game plan going in to make things
that easy on an offense that was terrible.
Speaker 13 (33:17):
Exactly two weeks to prepare, and that's what happens. The
other thing too, the offensive line, they didn't get near
oh Russell Wilson no much. They were in on Burrow
sixty of the snaps yep. Did you notice that? I
mean he had no time whatsoever. And the other thing,
(33:42):
I Chase Brown looked great and then it was like
he disappeared. He didn't get used. I don't know. I
know they got behind, but they were gashing them on
the run, but they didn't commit themselves to it. And
one other thing, they're dumping over the middle right, it
was wide open all the time, correct, but why not throw?
(34:06):
They don't use their tight ends as well as I
think that Goseki if you get him five yards pass
the line of scrimmage into somewhat open, He's going to
make the catch. So if you're not going to get
it after the wide receivers, hit that guy and pick
up some first downs. For God's sake.
Speaker 9 (34:25):
You know, the.
Speaker 13 (34:29):
Logic and the schemes just don't make sense. And to me,
it's unprepared football teams. I know we don't have a
lot of talent on defense, but at least you've got
to be prepared and be committed. And it's the same thing.
It's like it's Donald loop. It's over and over and over,
and big changes need to be done. What do you think?
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Yeah, Mike, I appreciate the phone call. One.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
I'm still often Are you surprised that no one has
had to take a fall for yesterday yet?
Speaker 3 (35:02):
No, I'm not surprised.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Do you envision anything happening not in the season in season?
Mike Sicki had five catches on five targets yesterday.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
The most he's done when t Higgins is on the field.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
Yeah, like, I guess my thing is, and we've talked
about this before. He's been great. Leads the NFL in sacks.
Trey Hendrickson had one tackle yesterday. He had one tackle
and one quarterback hit. Now, I know he's getting a
lot of attention, but if he's not a factor in
the game, this defense has no chance to stop anybody.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
No chance. Uh, Justice is calling in.
Speaker 14 (35:42):
What's up, Justice, Hey, Tony, thanks for having me on Hope.
You all are doing good. I just really want to
touch upon, you know, the the good Joe Burrows slander.
And you know how insane it is even you know
people that I you know, when we were watching the
game yesterday, they have the over to stay all Joe.
He turned it over three times, man. I mean, I
(36:03):
just don't think it's people who know ball. I mean
PJ watts Common right behind him, flaps the ball out
of his hands. I think you know better than anyone
that you're not holding out on that ball and the
see eyes in the back of your head. Yeah, I
just think it's we need to start calling out the
coaching staff and I'm tired of people defending.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
And that's really all I got, man, But justin, I mean,
I appreciate the call, thank you. Yeah I was.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
I was genuinely shocked at the amount of Joe burrowsland,
right I heard yesterday, genuinely shocked for what he's doing
and the plays that he is making game hit and
game out. It was shocking to me. Brian is calling
in as well, what's up, Brian?
Speaker 5 (36:49):
Hello?
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Try how you doing?
Speaker 5 (36:51):
You're doing all right? You tell like it is?
Speaker 3 (36:53):
I mean with a disappointing that season.
Speaker 4 (36:56):
This has been to the Bengals and they were supposed
to be a preseason.
Speaker 13 (37:01):
Expectations for a super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
What happened?
Speaker 4 (37:05):
Okay, so and fourteen mistackles mistackle after mistackle.
Speaker 15 (37:13):
And and how can you be interested in?
Speaker 4 (37:15):
I mean, how can as a fan could you want
to go buy ticket to a product that put on
the field right now?
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Yeah, it's hard, and it's hard because again I've talked
to you about Brian. I appreciate the phone call. I've
talked to more people Austin that made plans. I know
someone yesterday is like we're going to Dallas next week
and going to Nashville. Like, people make plans and they
spend good money. Yeah, to watch that product that was
on the field yesterday. That product is not acceptable.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
I think it was like American Airlines created a special
flight for Cincinnati to Dallas for the Monday night game
just for that and people spend thousands of dollars to
go see this team.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Is it's it's it's remarkable, and it's also tough at
the same point to watch now eight losses with some
of the star power.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
I mean, it's not making a mistake.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
They have the best receiver in football and a quarterback
who if the team was eight and four instead of
four and eight, would be leading the MVP charge. That's
how good it's been instead spiraling in the wrong direction.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
What's up, Chris?
Speaker 16 (38:30):
Hey, guys, how you doing. I'm all right, man? What
a what a bad loss?
Speaker 15 (38:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 16 (38:35):
I mean, it's just over and over and over. But
you know, uh, I'm I'm not giving up on a bangle.
I love the bangles and all that stuff, but I'm
start going to root from my UK team over here.
Might go down at the Papal shop and get me
a papal hat for the cope, you know what I mean.
There's a lot of root, the root for UK wildcast now.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Brother, Yeah, there's a lot of people out there today
that are looking at to what the basketball slate looks like,
Oh my.
Speaker 16 (39:03):
God, it's gonna be They're they're they're going awesome, and uh,
you know, and you see stuff, and you know, I
got a great bunch of teams right around in this
trash state area.
Speaker 17 (39:12):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 16 (39:14):
But I'm waiting on basketball now.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
Yeah, I hear you, man, Chris. I appreciate you. Thank you.
All right, brother Austin, I'm I'm I'm rewatching the play
and we'll break this down this week. I'm watching the
t J. Watt stripsack. On this play, Orlando Brown Junior
gets beat, which causes Joe Burrow to have to vacate
the pocket. I've never seen a blocking scheme like what
(39:38):
they did on this play. The tackle blocked down to
the guard and Cody Ford pulled to block TJ.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Watt. Why would you do that? Why would you pull.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Your guard and ask him to run and then break
his feet down and block one of the best pass
rushers in football?
Speaker 3 (39:58):
How does that happen? So play action?
Speaker 14 (40:01):
Now?
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Yeah, it was a play action. Look, okay, so you're
you're trying to show that the guard pulling is is
creating the runs.
Speaker 9 (40:07):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
I don't think that's abnormal. I think that happens quite
a bit in the NFL today. It's a tough ask,
but it is a tough ask.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
It's a tough ask, and if Orlando Brown Junior doesn't
get beat, he probably doesn't have to leave the pocket
and then put that pressure on Cody Ford. But nothing,
none of that matches, none of it meshes to the
way it needs to be. Let's take one more call
and get to a break.
Speaker 17 (40:29):
What's up, Dave, Hey, dyang, thanks for taking my call. Yes, sir, So,
you know, I hear everybody talking about you know, Clu's
done such a great job over you know, for two years,
you know, do all this and that, but if you
look at his overall rankings of you know, of how
(40:50):
this defense is ranked since he's been here, it's not
very good. I mean, I you know, you play the game.
When you look at a defensive rank, I know they
ranked against against the pass, But I mean, to me,
the most important ranking is points per game, correct, I mean,
that's what you're giving up, and then you look at
it at the yards you're giving.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
Up, right, Yeah, I mean, I mean essentially that's where
you're health.
Speaker 9 (41:15):
Right.
Speaker 17 (41:15):
He's had one year where this team has been in
the top ten of points allowed in the six years
he's been here. One year and that was a year
where you had Jesse Bates the contract here, remain proud
of contract here, Logan Wilson, a contract here. You know,
everybody wants to go back and say, well DJ Reader
(41:35):
is gone and Jesse's gone. Well DJ Reader was on
this team last year and they were terrible, so you
know at some point, you know, Lou's got to go.
I mean, I'm I'm with you. I'm surprised he wasn't
fired last night. I mean, I'd like to know what
they did during Was he even in the building during
the bye week, because that was atrocious last night yesterday.
(41:59):
I mean it was just yeah, Dave, you know, I
just I mean, I'm just tired of hearing about you know,
he's done such a great job. He said, five great
games against one team over his six years.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (42:11):
Period.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Yeah, Dave, I appreciate that. Thank you man. You know,
Austin what I look.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
To the other thing though, to respond to that, they're
not asking the Bengals to be a top ten defense, No,
just be top twenty. Not even that, like like like, don't.
Speaker 3 (42:26):
Be the worst in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (42:28):
I mean when they've been good in twenty twenty one,
they were seventeenth yep. If they were seventeenth right now,
they'd be in the playoffs. Correct, twenty twenty two they
were sixth. I mean obviously they'd be probably fighting for
the number one seed if they were six.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
Right, But like, I just look, what what message we've
already talked about the locker room with the Jermaine Pratt
comments there? What message are you sending the locker room
if you just keep status quo and no one is
held responsible for the performances on the field, what message
is that being said? If you are Cordell Volson, are
(43:05):
you saying, okay, I got bench? Why's Geno Stone now benched?
Speaker 9 (43:08):
Right?
Speaker 2 (43:09):
That's going to create a rift? If you're a player,
say met our defense is worse than the NFL Again,
how do these guys still have a job? What message
does that send throughout the halls of pay Course Stadium.
It's not good. I can tell you that. Let's take
a break, let's finish up our number one. We'll dive
into a little college football our number two as well.
We've got a lot still to go on the Monday
(43:31):
midday quarterback thanks to our friends at Skyline Chili on
the home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen to thirty Cincinnati
Sports Welcome back since E three to sixty the Monday
mid day Quarterback on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station
and a service of our friends at Skyline, Chile. We
got one minute here before I need to get the break.
I'm taking this call just because he's calling from Charlotte,
North Carolina, which I appreciate.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
Steve, What's going on?
Speaker 15 (43:54):
What's going on?
Speaker 18 (43:55):
Guys?
Speaker 15 (43:56):
I've called in a couple of times. I got a
couple of questions for you, and then I'll listen maybe
on the first half the next hour. It seems like
I was watching I was watching as a special on
Carson Palmer.
Speaker 19 (44:08):
Uh.
Speaker 15 (44:09):
One of the people's mentioned it, and I watched it,
and you know, he used to be the villain, and
then it turned out that first round pick and Mike
Brown does absolutely nothing for him, decides to give him a contract.
And you made a comment in the special enough you've
seen or not that he wasn't going to let Carson
Palmer back out of his contract and then reward him
(44:29):
for it. So can somebody please explain to me? We
built this man of stadium, and in that contract, I
thought he said he was going to put a competitive
team on the field, which he has for maybe two
or three years in the in the history of pay
course slash Paul Brown, and now they're talking about doing
upgrades to it. At what point is city councilor or
(44:51):
the fans or the community going to go, Nope, we're
done giving you your money, and so you.
Speaker 13 (44:57):
Start spending money.
Speaker 15 (44:58):
I mean, I know he's spending money on like Joe,
but whenever you let players go Joe Mixon, Jesse Bates, DJ,
when is the city council when is someone going to
make Mike down only understands dollars, That's it. He didn't
care about anything else, you know, even with the Whitworth
you know, with wit he even made the same comments
(45:21):
about his contract dealing with Katie and with Troy. At
what point is the city council somebody going to stay
up and say no, if you don't start putting a
competitive team on the field, we're done funding anything for you. Now.
I'll hang up and listen to your guys response.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
Thanks man, Thank you, Steve. I appreciate it. I guess
for me, Austin, my first question to that would be
if this roster because they have opened up the checkbooks.
If this roster is not good enough to compete the
way it should be competing, who in the organization is
to blame for that? Does that fall on Zach and
(45:54):
the coaching staff? Does it fall in the personnel decisions?
Does it fall in Duke Tobin? Like, if we're just
saying right now that the personnel doesn't match, the personnel
is not good enough, who does that fall on Duke Tobin?
Speaker 3 (46:10):
Because I feel like there's a but.
Speaker 4 (46:12):
You can also say it also falls on Mike and
the family for not doing enough to surround Duke Tobin
with all the tools necessary.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
Now there was something, and I would have to fact
check this. I saw something like over the weekend that
the Detroit Lions have like thirty people in their scouting
department something like that, and the Bengals have five or seven.
Speaker 4 (46:30):
The Bengals have six total, I believe the Steelers for example,
of twenty seven. Yeah, so that and this has been
the case for a long time, right, a few years
ago the Bengals had three, So now they have six.
So clearly they're you know, going in the right direction,
albeit there thirty years behind.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
I genuinely feel like there's a disconnect at that stadium
with Duke and the coaching staff because the players and
the personnel don't mesh. The players in the scheme don't mesh.
So you know whose decision at the end of the
day is it to move on from a Jesse Bates
from a Joe Mixon.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
As far as the you know, the city council and everything,
they they don't care no about the team on the
field either. They're they're just worried about the money and
the contract and what makes sense, you know, from a
political standpoint, sure, and and what makes sense for the
actual you know, location and the land and all that.
(47:29):
The NFL will make money for the city, whether the
Bengals are good or not.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
I think there's a I think there's a genuine disconnect
somewhere between that personnel department and the coaching staff, and
it has led to some bad players being on the
football field. Let's take a break. There was bad players
on the football field Saturday.
Speaker 3 (47:47):
There were good players on the football field Saturday, they
just didn't get.
Speaker 2 (47:49):
Thrown Yeah, And most of the bad players were on
the team that won. Michigan beats Ohio State, TCU beat

The folks at Sincy Shirts can help with that all right.
It was bad yesterday. It was also bad on Saturday,
(50:11):
a bad local week end for Cincinnati sports fans unless
you're a fan of the Bobcats or the RedHawks, who
have both advanced to Detroit to play in the MAC Championship.
So shout out to Chuck Martin squad. They got the
job done.
Speaker 4 (50:30):
There is at least one model of consistency in this
city when it comes to football.
Speaker 2 (50:34):
Bearcats didn't get the job done. We'll talk about that
in a minute. But before that big noon kickoff happened
in Columbus and I watched Davis Warren, who I wonder
on how many other teams genuinely in college football with Davis.
Speaker 3 (50:52):
Warren be a starter? Probably not many.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
Davis Warren went nine of sixteen for sixty two yards
cards zero touchdowns and two interceptions. That equates to three
point nine yards per completion. Now, Hala Mullins dominated on
the ground thirty two carries for a buck sixteen because
Donovan Edwards, who beat up Ohio State last year, left
with an injury, so thirty two carries for Mullins included.
(51:20):
Included in that was pretty much the game ceiling run
where he broke a couple tackles. I believe a twenty
seven yard run that's set up the field goal. I
don't know if I've ever watched a worst college offense
on display. It's a Michigan team that came in at
six and five, playing for essentially nothing against an Ohio
(51:41):
State team playing to get into the Big Ten championship game,
seeding in the College Football Playoff and to erase the
bad taste that the last three years provided. And instead
Ohio State put up ten points at home as a
three touchdown favorite, a three touchdown favorite, and that offense,
(52:06):
which possesses some of the most skilled players I've seen.
And I saw a video this weekend Urban Meyer before
the year talking about the talent. I've never seen talent
like that altogether on one roster. Jim Trussel, I've never
seen that much talent at once in this locker room.
We know the money that Ohio State spent, and in
(52:27):
the biggest game of their season, they put up ten
points in a loss at home. How do you even
sum up Saturday, Austin, because that's what everyone wanted me
to do. Yeah, you know, ask get on Austin about
what happened. I saw you walk in with the with
you with your head down today, there's not much I
don't need to stoke the fire. I know that fire
(52:48):
is already burning. I know that there's a frustration. I
know that there's an anger. I also know that there's
a lot of people that want Ryan Day out of there.
Here's a news flash. They're getting ready for the college
football playoff and the trans portal opens on December eighth,
So that makes that a little harder to navigate because
the portal is going to be open well before your
(53:10):
season is over. It makes things a little bit tricky.
But your general thoughts from.
Speaker 4 (53:15):
Saturday, Okay, I want to first of all clarify something.
Whenever Ohio State is brought up on this show, I
am consistently told that nobody cares, and nobody wants to
talk about them, and nobody likes them. It was ironic
that many of those comments came when the Bearcats actually
had a feasible football team, and now that program is
(53:36):
a complete disaster and those words have quieted. So just
want to put it out there that now, all of
a sudden, when Ohio State struggles, Bearcat fans come crawling
back and want to talk to me and want to
make fun of me when my team fails. So just
clearly and again, Tony brought this topic up before anybody
yells at me for talking about Ohio State. This is
(53:57):
I just want to get that out there of Ohio
State as an embarrassment. Ryan Day should be fired. He
should have been fired on the field. He should have
been fired two days ago. He should not be the
head coach at Ohio State. What Michigan has done to
him has it needs to be studied psychologically. There is
(54:20):
something about Ryan Day and the physicality of his football
team that he is so offended by. If you go
back to the Lou Holtz comments, Lou Holtz criticized him
and his team because he does not think they are physical.
And Ryan Day proved a point that night and ran
the ball and ran the ball, and ran the ball
(54:40):
and beat Notre Dame and then lost his marbles to
Lou Holtz. Well, for twenty three years in a row now,
whoever has had the leading whoever has led the Ohio
State Michigan game in rushing yards has won the game.
And Michigan has essentially dominated the line of scrimmage for
the last four years, and for some reason, Ryan Day
(55:03):
thinks that in order to be proven correct or to
prove a point, he has to be physical and run
the football down the throat of Michigan in order to
win the game and prove that his team is tough.
He has three, maybe four NFL caliber wide receivers, incredible,
he's got a much better quarterback than he had a
(55:25):
year ago. He's got the best defense in college football,
and he's at home. Yeah, the weather was not great,
but it was not It didn't completely change the game
as far as the wind and the cold, and consistently
Michigan was lining up with seven to ten yards off
(55:46):
the ball to these wide receivers because they respect how
good they are, and Michigan was without their starting cornerback.
Amazing that Ryan then chooses the run the ball thirty times.
Speaker 3 (56:04):
And get nothing.
Speaker 4 (56:06):
And this is after you've already lost three starting offensive linemen,
including your center, who's probably the best player on the
team not named Jeremiah Smith. And for some reason, he
is trying to prove this point that running the football
will determine the winner and prove that we're tough at
Ohio State. I do not give a damn about whether
(56:28):
you're tough or you're physical. I care about winning the game.
A few years ago, Ohio State didn't have the best
defense in the world, but they could score. And Urban
scored sixty two on Michigan. They gave up thirty nine,
but they scored sixty two. And that's all I cared about.
And the unfortunate thing about the future of this is
(56:51):
Ryan can't beat Michigan when they're good. He can't beat
Michigan when they're bad. He can't beat Michigan when they're
in between. This is, as you mentioned, Tressel mentioned, and
as urban Meyer mentioned, the most talented Ohio State roster
in my lifetime in thirty years outside. It's right there
with twenty fifteen as the most talented roster. There are
(57:15):
multiple first round picks on this team, and they spent
twenty million dollars to bring those guys back and for
him to completely go away from the identity that is
who they are and what was built on that roster
with Smith and with Abuka and with Tate and with
(57:35):
Judkins and Will Howard, who by the way, is not
very good and I've said from the very beginning he
is not that good of a quarterback. There's a reason
why Kansas State had no problem Will Howard hitting the door.
Speaker 21 (57:47):
Nope.
Speaker 4 (57:48):
So it just is frustrating that that seems to be
a mental block with Ryan Day. And you could see
in the fracas on the field afterwards him just standing
there so confused. I thought Ohio State found something over
the last three weeks of the season, but I was wrong.
(58:10):
And they don't have the dogs compete with Michigan up front.
They do have the dogs to compete outside, and they
chose not to go to them. Yeah, and that is
entirely on Ryan Day. And as far as the future
is concerned, should he be the coach next year, he
in my mind, he should not. I'm in favor of
kind of doing a reset of the program because to me,
(58:31):
it is about beating Michigan more than anything.
Speaker 2 (58:33):
And Michigan will be spending way more money going forward.
Speaker 4 (58:36):
Michigan, listen, You've beat Ohio State four years in a row.
I can't disrespect you. You did it the right way.
This time, they lost like thirty dudes altogether to the
NFL and coaches combined, and they just went seven and
five and beat Ohio State at Ohio State. So kudos
(58:56):
to Sharon Moore, who I cannot stand and I think
is a putts. But kudos to Cheron Wore because he
did what he needed to do. He did it last
year or two. So two things with that, now I
want to follow up with let me just say this
about Ohio State's future with Ryan Day. There are to
me there is one option. It's Dan Lanning. If you
(59:18):
can get Dan Lanning, you do the buyout, whatever it takes.
Keep in mind Ross B. York is the Ohio State
athletic director. He's the one who signed off on a
seventy six million dollar buyout at Texas A and M
for Jimbo Fisher. If you can get Dan Lanning, make
it happen. If you can't get him, you're probably gonna
have to stick with Ryan Day. They probably will stick
(59:41):
with Ryan Day. There's a few names you want to
talk to. Mike Rabel is one of them. He's not
going to be a college coach Urban coming back Urban.
I would take him right now. But if you're going
to get a guy like Urban, or if you're gonna
get a guy like Mike Rabel, I think you need
to establish a GM position much like what and You're
lost doing at Stanford, like Adrian Wojnarowski is now doing
(01:00:04):
for Saint Bonaventure basketball. You need to have a GM
in place because this is the NFL now, basically with money,
you have to do something to alleviate that. That's why
so many college coaches are leaving. The other name is
Nick Saban. I don't think that's ever gonna happen. It's
Nick Saban, Dan Lanning, or you stick with Ryan Day.
So I thought it was I personally went and fired.
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
I thought I was telling the first drive wink Martin
Dale is fist pumping on the sideline when they held
Ohio State to three, and in that said, I'm thinking, Okay,
their game plan is literally going to be playoff coverage
and just hold them to three in the red zone,
they still try to run at thirty times. Maddening to me.
The end of the game, Jack Soreer makes the interception
and they do nothing with it. Dumbfounded, absolutely dumbfounding. How
(01:00:51):
that roster, with those athletes and those stars could get
nothing going. Now, the obvious talking point is what happened
after the game. We got guys being pepper sprite. We've
got this new thing in college football where flags are
being planted at midfield. As an Ohio State guy, what
(01:01:12):
is your thought on the flag planting.
Speaker 3 (01:01:15):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (01:01:17):
I mean I've said for years I gained a lot
of respect for Baker Mayfield when he planned the flag
at Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
I listen.
Speaker 4 (01:01:27):
It's one thing if Oklahoma comes in to Ohio Stadium
and beat you on a night game and everybody, everybody's
left the field and you go and plant the flag.
It is something else entirely when it's Michigan, and.
Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
To do it right, whether the players are still singing
the alma mater.
Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Correct and so.
Speaker 4 (01:01:46):
Number one, if you're Michigan, you can and should try
to plant the flag. That's a great thing to do
to your rival, to rub it in their face, because
that's what rivalries are about. So much is talked about
when it comes to the rivalry.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
They yeah the band. Okay, let me listen.
Speaker 4 (01:02:04):
When you walk into the Woody Hayes Athletic Center as
a football player, the first thing you see is a
countdown to the the game. You see a Michigan helmet
and an Ohio State helmet hanging in the weight room
is a beat Michigan sign. Every single performance the band
has there is a banana. I don't know exactly the tradition,
(01:02:25):
but it says beat Blue on it.
Speaker 3 (01:02:26):
A couple weeks ago they dropped the deuce yes on
a Michigan flight.
Speaker 4 (01:02:29):
They constantly the band constantly take shots at Michigan throughout
the season. This rivalry is about hatred. It is not
about football. So when you win, you hate the other team,
you are going to try to rub it in their face.
I have no problem with that. I also know that
if someone's gonna do that to me, I'm going to
(01:02:50):
try to prevent them, and I'm going to retaliate because
I too hate them, and I emotionally just lost this
game that I can back to school for and that
I got paid a lot of money for, and we
lost it at home in front of our crowd, fourth
year in a row, for the fourth year in a row,
and now you're trying to disrespect and embarrass me on
(01:03:13):
my home turf. I am going to retaliate. I have
no problem with it whatsoever. I think it's great for
football on both sides. I do too, as long as
it can stay safe. Now guy's getting pepper sprayed and all.
That's that's a lot but one. If you're doing that
as Michigan, you better know that there's going to be
a retaliation.
Speaker 3 (01:03:29):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (01:03:30):
My immediate thought was they showed more fight at that
moment than they did for much of the game. Ryan
Day looked clueless as to what was going on in
that situation. I you know, as Jack Sawyer's getting pushed
to the locker room, Ryan Day looked like he was clueless.
Speaker 3 (01:03:44):
He did. He looked like a deer in headlights. He
looked shell shocked.
Speaker 4 (01:03:49):
I disagree with the whole thing that Ohio State showed
more fight after the game than in the game. I
thought they played really hard. I thought they tackled really well.
I thought overall like they the effort was there, the
execution was not. Will Howard was bad, felt like it
was too big for him. The offensive line just kind
of got beat consistently. The defense was fantastic. So I
(01:04:13):
don't like that narrative that I know some people have said.
But what about the narrative that they lost on the purpose.
How many times do you see when they talk about
Ohio State Michigan, they show highlights of them fighting over
the years. Part of the reason why the rivalry is
so such a big deal is because they hate each
other and because they always fight, sure, and so you
(01:04:36):
can't get mad when they actually start to fight, like
and I've seen it across college football. Now, like that's awesome,
go and plant the flag, like let your rival know.
I saw that the South Carolina game cock relieved itself
on the Clemson paw at midfield.
Speaker 3 (01:04:55):
Not great.
Speaker 4 (01:04:55):
Hell, yes, I'm all for that. Good if you're Clemson.
But who gives about Dabo Swinny?
Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
Now what do you say, Austin to the people that said, well,
in Columbus it didn't matter as much because it sets
them up better for the.
Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
Playoff, don't care. Also, they're wrong. I heard that as well.
They're wrong.
Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
They're gonna have to play an SEC team in the
first round, so that's asinine.
Speaker 3 (01:05:18):
Instead of a big twelve team.
Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Who another big twelve team came in to the Nippert
Stadium and got to win. UC lost its fifth game
in a row. Saturday night, I read something for you.
Speaker 4 (01:05:29):
I was texting with our friend Joe Daniman over the
week and I thought he said something that was really
eloquent that I'd like to read. His message. I haven't
asked him for permission for this. I hope he's okay
with me doing this. But he said football players are
testosterone freaks, add on rivalry, and it's a stick of
emotional dynamite. What doesn't help holier than now announcers who
(01:05:54):
clutch their pearls when football players fight. Football players are
oursy's closest form of gladiators. Wow, why are we offended
and appalled when they fight? You know, Kirk Herbstreet going
on and on about this is so bad for college football,
and Gus Johnson sounded like his dog died and all
(01:06:17):
these this is so bad. No, dude, it's not that bad.
You guys ever been to a hockey game. They let
those dudes fight. This is good for college football in
a world where that place is a mess. College football
in and of itself is a mess. We get some
pure bred hatred and these people get to fight each other.
Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
We talked about in the NFL how we love hate. Yeah,
makes the games better. That's what rivalries are now.
Speaker 4 (01:06:43):
I think, more than anything the pepper spray was It
was used correctly to turn something from getting into a
real serious situation. Those guys said all right, enough is
enough points proven you're not listening. We're on Pepper's ray.
And thank god that those police officers were and they
did that because they should. I think it adds another
(01:07:04):
awesome chapter of the rivalry.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
Remember last year they said the rivalry's dead because of
the twelve team playoff.
Speaker 4 (01:07:09):
Every week or every year this game comes around, I'm
reminded of the Ohio State offensive lineman going off the
field giving the double bird to the Michigan fans. I
see them fighting constantly on the sideline like that highlight,
over and over and over again. It's the best rivalry
in sports. Unfortunately, Ohio State has been on the wrong
(01:07:31):
end of it. And I have no excuses. I have
no explanations. There were none at all for them this year,
and unfortunately, I don't think they're going to go away
from Ryan Day. But somebody I thought Chip Kelly was
supposed to be the guy. Somebody is supposed to get
in rattle him and say, dude, be who you are,
(01:07:54):
don't try to be somebody else.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
I think I have everything out of my mind. Let's
take a break. Thank you for allowing me to do that.
We're gonna talk talkbacks and.
Speaker 4 (01:08:04):
I apologize to the bearcat fans who I took a
shot out shot of man shot at at the beginning.
Speaker 2 (01:08:10):
Well, we'll talk bearcats at the end of this hour.
We'll do talkbacks when we return. Sorry on this the
Home of the Bengals slashed out ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati

Part of Sancy three sixties.
Speaker 7 (01:09:37):
Austin, buddy, play that talkback on your screen and please
try not to Saba tajam.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
All right, so we're gonna do these five from last week. First, yeah,
I want to I want to know what you think.
Speaker 21 (01:09:50):
With the recent departure of Jonathan India, Cincinnati's un representation
is lacking.
Speaker 26 (01:09:56):
Now.
Speaker 21 (01:09:56):
I know they still possess ty France, but a few
moves they can make if they want to be fully staffed.
First off, Jordan Walker, he's a budding star for Saint Louis,
provides some pop in our outfield.
Speaker 3 (01:10:08):
Nine time All.
Speaker 21 (01:10:09):
Star El Salvador Perez could spell Stevenson behind the Slayton
and World Series champion and noted cheater Carlos Korea could
back up Elliott Short.
Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
What do you think thoughts. It was very good, very good.
Speaker 4 (01:10:21):
We did talk about how Typhrance isn't there anymore, but
pretty strong Joey.
Speaker 27 (01:10:26):
The Bengals QB had a very shiny arm and if
you ever saw it, saw it, he could do a
defense home. All of the other QB he used to
laugh and call him names. They never let poor Sisty
(01:10:48):
win anyone's score games.
Speaker 4 (01:10:51):
That's good and it holds true even after yesterday. Right,
it stands the test of time.
Speaker 10 (01:10:56):
Yeah, oh, I brought it back back again, Ye back again,
callove friend pin Pong's back pink Pong's back paint Pong's
back ping Pong's back pink punk back day.
Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
Had the Bengals won, that would be the winner. Yeah,
I think you're right, But they didn't win, so that would.
Speaker 9 (01:11:24):
Clear water.
Speaker 3 (01:11:26):
After my own heart.
Speaker 9 (01:11:28):
No googging Captain of the universe.
Speaker 28 (01:11:32):
Rappi, Ohio, just want to call in and wish you
to Hey, happy Thanksgiving and all the top backers Happy Thanksgiving.
Speaker 3 (01:11:42):
I still listen say you love.
Speaker 9 (01:11:45):
That from me.
Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
If he wants a gift card, he's got to be
more consistent on a talk.
Speaker 12 (01:11:49):
Very strong rapping running here. You know, old Runny be
thankful on this week of Thanksgiving. I always got a
thankful because I drive it for a living. I live
skyline Jilly while I hear Tony and Austin Sorry, second,
Willie Sawry, Jimmy Kauson. I'm thanking for the talkbacks hurt
us he of six. He shirts that he always make
me laugh till my jolly belly hurts. My car has
(01:12:11):
never been stolen. I'm thankful, I said, And I ain't
never had a.
Speaker 3 (01:12:14):
Dog go poop in my bed.
Speaker 9 (01:12:16):
Word.
Speaker 4 (01:12:19):
That's tough. Yeah, that's tough. What do you think I'm
either on two or five? So rapping Ronnie or the
Joey Hm, I kind of like the the jingle bell
Joey one?
Speaker 3 (01:12:35):
All right?
Speaker 5 (01:12:36):
Is that?
Speaker 3 (01:12:36):
Which one?
Speaker 5 (01:12:36):
Is it? No?
Speaker 4 (01:12:38):
No, no, no.
Speaker 27 (01:12:43):
No, no, Joey. The bas qv had a very shiny arm.
Speaker 3 (01:12:51):
That's it.
Speaker 27 (01:12:52):
And if you ever saw it, he could do a
defense all of the other qbs he used to lett
and call him.
Speaker 3 (01:13:03):
All right, all right, we'll stick with that one. That's first, Ronnie,
your second to that, and.
Speaker 4 (01:13:08):
That will be our winner. Good, good effort all the
way around, all right. Can't wait to see what we
got today.
Speaker 29 (01:13:14):
Disappointing season all around the board. It started off on
the wrong foot with the Jamar chase, the Trey Anderson contracted.
I think it left a sour taste in a lot
of players' mouths.
Speaker 3 (01:13:24):
It really did.
Speaker 29 (01:13:25):
Every coach on the defensive side of the ball needs
to go. If I'm Joe Burrow, I'm not taking another
snap this season, no reason too. He had a great,
healthy season. He was amazing all year. Thank you, we
appreciate you. But in the season healthy and we'll see.
Speaker 5 (01:13:41):
You next year.
Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
Joe will play Hey guys, a shoe from College Hill.
Speaker 30 (01:13:45):
And if Bengals players were talkbackers, I think Joe would
be God because he's monotonent all hell, but he's powerful.
I think Jamar would be Tony Montania because yeah, he
gets emotional sometimes, but he's gonna get stacks of Hendrickson
would be Hank Hill because he's got that blockhead. He's
hard working, he's dependable. And the rest of the defense
(01:14:07):
would be Avan from Advisdell because you.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
Know it's Evendale. Man, have some respect. It's pretty well done.
Craig Sharon bes Greig.
Speaker 31 (01:14:19):
My talkback Friday was Bengals twenty four, Steelers sixteen. I
thought that even this defense could hold the Steelers to
sixteen points, but new they get steamrolled. I listen to
this show every day and respect both of your opinions.
Tell me, in fourteen weeks, how does this team go
from a super Bowl again and tender to a train wreck?
Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
Unbelievable bad coach that will have to be documented.
Speaker 18 (01:14:46):
On Thanksgiving Day, Duke Tobin was asked what he was
most grateful for, and his reply was he was grateful
to work for the only owner in the NFL who
would continue to employ him despite his dismal performance.
Speaker 25 (01:15:02):
Thank you, Hey, guys, Jacob and Texas. Jacob Austin was
right a couple of weeks ago. Season's over. It is
what it is.
Speaker 3 (01:15:12):
They need to just.
Speaker 25 (01:15:13):
Pack it in tank for draft picks. Man Burrow and
Chase and Henderson all sin so they don't get hurt
so they can try again next year. I'm just so Also,
they should probably let go of some coaches like Paulack
and a Rumo, probably even Zach Wod.
Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
I'm just so not ready for draft talk.
Speaker 4 (01:15:34):
We're not We're not just sitting out scared of the season.
If Jamar wants to do it, I get it. Yeah,
everybody else.
Speaker 12 (01:15:41):
Know, Hello, this is former President Ronald Reagan, and well,
who dead the Bengals? In fact, I'll be running over
to Cincy sure it's leader today to pick up one
of their new who dead Bengal burial shrouds? And speaking
of who dead, Ryan Day is? Who Day? He'll wonder
what happened to his job if the Buck guys don't
(01:16:01):
win the championship this year. And thanks to that loss
on Saturday, I've had to put up with Gerald Ford
constantly running into my office and planting his Michigan flag.
Speaker 3 (01:16:12):
Very good man that we kept the long Thanksgiving weekend
in sports.
Speaker 24 (01:16:18):
Welp, the return of the speed bump defense man.
Speaker 19 (01:16:21):
Can't lie to you though I expect to win that
game anymore.
Speaker 15 (01:16:25):
It's kind of not even fair or a rivalry.
Speaker 32 (01:16:27):
Wow.
Speaker 15 (01:16:28):
Having said that, Bengals, with a litany of things that
were terrible.
Speaker 3 (01:16:31):
Azed one thing that stick out.
Speaker 33 (01:16:33):
Can we please I thirty one get under center?
Speaker 3 (01:16:36):
Oh no, they're not good enough. The worst short yardist
team in the NFL.
Speaker 32 (01:16:40):
Big win for Michigan hoops against X Bye Bye lost.
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
The tape guard sucks.
Speaker 4 (01:16:45):
Successful Michigan sports weekend versus Ohio teams.
Speaker 3 (01:16:51):
Because he used the word lytton. He can't spell you
know what it means, but he used it.
Speaker 34 (01:16:56):
Tony Austin been from white Oak Lot to unpack here
in thirty seconds? You Ryan Day, So he's coming to
U see. Brian Kelly's coming to you see, and Luke
Fickles come to the UK. Second Bengals. When did h
Pratt turn into mal Luca? And when did Gino son
Soon turn into Mark Roman of two thousand and three Bangals?
Speaker 9 (01:17:18):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (01:17:19):
Wayne, where we should go from here? Thanks? Guys, I
don't know where to go from there? Figure it out. Hey, guys,
Matt Tampa, Florida.
Speaker 35 (01:17:28):
You know what's worse than not being able to tackle
anybody and making Russell Wilson yesterday look like Joe Montana.
Speaker 3 (01:17:36):
The fact that our defense.
Speaker 35 (01:17:39):
Practices against, in my opinion, the best quarterback and the
best receiver every day.
Speaker 3 (01:17:46):
It's just egregious disgusting.
Speaker 2 (01:17:53):
Not as much because it's more scout team now that
the season does, but all training camp they couldn't go
against him because he wasn't practicing.
Speaker 36 (01:18:00):
Hey, Google, give me some words to describe the Bengals
season this year? Okay, so we got words. Bust, blood bath, catastrophe, calamity, cataclysm, debacle, defeated, failure, fiasco, flop, ruined, shamble, tragedy,
(01:18:27):
and wash out.
Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
Kind of makes you wonder how they won four games.
It really does.
Speaker 8 (01:18:33):
Hello, hell Austin, Tony, this is evident, even d I
woke up this morning for the first time in fifty
three years clearheaded.
Speaker 3 (01:18:43):
Oh, and it dawned on me. We're the laughing stop.
You know, when the Steelers picked up Picket, I laughed,
When they.
Speaker 8 (01:18:51):
Picked up Fields, I laughed. When they then picked up Russ,
I laughed, who's laughing now?
Speaker 3 (01:18:57):
Our organization stinks?
Speaker 9 (01:19:03):
Hey? Right in the RBA Blue ash Beard.
Speaker 8 (01:19:06):
Anyway, you see Clifton tackle football pasthetics.
Speaker 3 (01:19:13):
They think would they lose four, five, six in a row?
Speaker 9 (01:19:16):
Terrible? And I was listening to that.
Speaker 11 (01:19:17):
Bear Tag journal thing, that Kingan Nicholson guy.
Speaker 8 (01:19:20):
Oh, he's so smad.
Speaker 10 (01:19:22):
He knows soon make you back the spots where he
gets on.
Speaker 9 (01:19:25):
There and he said, you could be Purdue.
Speaker 37 (01:19:29):
They have hope, they find their coach, they have a
vision bah leave.
Speaker 3 (01:19:33):
Kean's also a Purdue hater, right you guy?
Speaker 38 (01:19:37):
Is forty four points. That was the same number used
in the rig TV drawing for Mayberry's jinx Henry Bennett.
Then Henry do out the hat size number six and
seven eights the Bengals defense. Are they even six and
(01:19:57):
seven eights on a scale of one hundred this year?
Henry Bennett and the Bengals defense.
Speaker 3 (01:20:05):
Pick it up, Pick it up. I am not a
smart man, but I do know what tackling is. That's
a good point. It is a little Forrest Gump.
Speaker 7 (01:20:22):
Tony Tommy Tuck and El Gabbrino Elsrom Silverton. After all
the carnage that happened this weekend, it was great to
see Austin cry about the Buckeyes and the inability to
beat well Ryan Day's inability to beat Michigan. But it
is a little nerve wrecking because you have to think
Scott Sadadfield is going to make that trip up seventy
(01:20:43):
four get an interview with Osun.
Speaker 3 (01:20:46):
I hate to see that guy go seventy four. Real
big bummer. This is really good at geography.
Speaker 26 (01:20:50):
Now the Big eighteen, I mean the Big ten is
seven flated. Now, you haven't played a records such as
Indiana and Penn State. We've only played one team outside
of a title. At the consequence os you this embarrassed
home to five hundred Michigan and gets to avoid going
to the Big Ten title game. But I certainly would
have suffered a third loss of the season. How they
(01:21:12):
get to go to the expanded TWEFT team playoffs, no
questions asked?
Speaker 3 (01:21:15):
Yep, hogwash man, Hey, guys Ken from the Lake.
Speaker 39 (01:21:20):
Can you know next month I will be seventy four
years old, and although I'm pretty sure I have a
lot of good years left in me, I'm wondering if
I'll ever see the Bengals winning Super Bowl or the
Reds winning the World Series. I think at this point
my best chance is that UK basketball is going to
(01:21:41):
win another nation national championship.
Speaker 3 (01:21:43):
So go Big Blue.
Speaker 33 (01:21:47):
There you go, Hey, dudes, Brandon and Anderson here Renald
Blake's Shelton Classic. Even though von bil can out run
and tied in Geno Stone REGRESSI and that's usual and
old playoff p he can't play nod but we still
(01:22:08):
got Burro, Chase and Higgins for now. Yes to my
Bengals on the offensive side.
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
I still man, Oh oh, that's awesome, like a song
with my name in it.
Speaker 3 (01:22:25):
Man, that is our leader right now? Hey, Alston a
Tony great shows always. Austin's quick question for you.
Speaker 29 (01:22:34):
If you google who owns Ryan Day, what will show up?
Speaker 3 (01:22:40):
I believe it's Michigan got him. Oh and four got him.
Speaker 29 (01:22:45):
I'm so glad I'm not a Buckeye fan or alumni,
because I don't know how I can handle that anyway.
Speaker 5 (01:22:50):
Bengals are done.
Speaker 39 (01:22:51):
Keep working on that top ten draft pick, and thank
goodness for hockey and college basketball.
Speaker 3 (01:22:57):
One slight correction, he is one and four man.
Speaker 40 (01:23:02):
Football suck this weekend. Bengals terrible, Bearcat's terrible. On a
bright side, since any's soon, Joe Royer broke Travis Kelsey's
single season receiving record.
Speaker 3 (01:23:16):
That's the on bright side.
Speaker 2 (01:23:18):
Thanks, Yeah, he broke the single season record. Corey Kyner
went for over a thousand again and the team still
only won five games.
Speaker 5 (01:23:25):
We got Jeff and Indy.
Speaker 37 (01:23:26):
I just can't fathom that this coaching staff has committed,
specifically lou An Rumo, to these guys that are cooked
on defense. I mean Hubbard's cheeks, He's cheeks, He's horrible.
Speaker 15 (01:23:36):
Play Miles Murphy, I get it.
Speaker 3 (01:23:38):
Miles away Murphy.
Speaker 37 (01:23:39):
He may not be any good, but let's at least
find out the last five weeks. Jermaine Barton can't get
him on the field. He plays two snaps Dejon Anthony
Tyson Anderson that safety. I agree often that's what I
would have starting on Monday night.
Speaker 3 (01:23:51):
This organization is a joke. Miles away Murphy.
Speaker 4 (01:23:55):
I saw a post that showed Shack in the Celtics
uniform and said, this is Sam Hubbard.
Speaker 3 (01:23:59):
It's all that kind of agree with that.
Speaker 32 (01:24:02):
So with this whole Joe Burrow thing, I think it
depends on what lens you want to look at Joe
Burrow through. If you want to count his greatness and
say how great he is every other second, then he
needs to win these games.
Speaker 3 (01:24:15):
People never made his hues for Peyton. Oh my gosh, man,
I can't.
Speaker 9 (01:24:19):
I can't. I can't.
Speaker 2 (01:24:20):
I can't.
Speaker 9 (01:24:20):
I can't.
Speaker 3 (01:24:21):
I can't, I can't. He's the same guy who like
hates on Ellie Daily Crews during the season.
Speaker 23 (01:24:27):
Jermaine Pratt's post conference, Yeah, that's about the dumbest thing
I've ever heard. West Claremont Xavier could have played better
defense yesterday' Zavier don't even have a football team.
Speaker 12 (01:24:43):
Joe Burrow, hang in there.
Speaker 23 (01:24:44):
If we had a mediocre quarterback, we'd lose like sixty
to three every week.
Speaker 3 (01:24:52):
Yeah, I just got one thing to say, Pratt is
a bomber. Yeah, yeah, fair enough.
Speaker 24 (01:25:06):
I tried to be an optimistic, glass half full kind
of guy. What I saw yesterday was a glass half
full of something that can't be said on air. This
team has regressed every season since its Super Bowl appearance
and doesn't look like it's getting any better anytime soon.
We're at least two drafts away from having a defense
that's league average, assuming we even hit on those draft picks,
(01:25:29):
and also.
Speaker 4 (01:25:29):
Assuming we still have Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase.
Speaker 3 (01:25:32):
Then come on.
Speaker 2 (01:25:35):
Yeah, it feels like it's further away than it is
close Now.
Speaker 3 (01:25:39):
I think we'll Uh, I don't. Well, we don't have
any more time. It's tough. Today's a tough day, man.
How lucky are we that our biggest problems are around
our football teams?
Speaker 4 (01:25:51):
I guess pretty lucky perspective. Sure healthy the car started
this morning. Sure it's a very nice guy came and
fixed my furnace today. Man, So I got a Christmas
tree on a Cyber Monday deal. I'm gonna take a break.
I got it pretty good all things considered.
Speaker 3 (01:26:09):
Come back, we got a football, the Natty coming round football. Yeah,
well so if we talk about it every day, well,
some people have it worse than us.
Speaker 2 (01:26:17):
Football in the NATI Coming Back. We'll finish our number
two talking about what went wrong for the Bearcats not
only Saturday, but the end of this season as well.
We'll look across the NFL and college football slate to
kick off our number three and you'll hear Joe Burrow's
postgame press conference his comments as well. All still ahead
on the Monday Midday Quarterback Tony and Mo Football Show
(01:26:39):
in Florence from three to six as well. You're listening
on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 20 (01:26:46):
For more information about content.
Speaker 1 (01:26:48):
This is Football in the NATTI on the official home
of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:26:55):
All right, welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:26:56):
Since he three to sixty the Monday Midday Quarterback thanks
to Cinty shirts, Things not great for the Bengals this weekend.
Things not great for the Buckeyes. Also, things not great
for the Cincinnati Bearcats, who Saturday nip at Night for
the first and only time this season, dropped their fifth
consecutive game. This team once five and two with a
(01:27:19):
win over Arizona State, who's in the Big twelve title game.
By the way, once five and two finishes the year
five and seven. Brendan Sowersby regressed really ever since the
Texas Tech game. In my opinion, he did not get better.
This offense disappeared, Their downfield passing game disappeared. Players are
(01:27:40):
disappearing off the roster already entering the transfer portal. A
litany of airs on Saturday, starting when the Bearcats forced
a three and out on the first possession of the
game and the punt, which was rolling, the returner decided
to go try to field it make a play, he fumbled.
(01:28:01):
TCU recovers, they go down and score. There were multiple
special teams airs on the night. Brendan Sowersby through an
interception down in the red zone late in the game.
TCU came in as one of the best offenses six
best sixth best passing efficiency offense in football. Were held
to two hundred and twelve yards passing, no touchdowns in
(01:28:22):
an interception. The Bearcats gave up twenty in the first half.
The Bearcats gave up zero in the second half. It
was a twenty to seven game at the half, and
for much of the second half it was twenty to
seven and it felt like sixty to seven. The offense
could get nothing going outside of Corey Kiner, who hats
off to Corey Kiner man. He wrapped up one of
(01:28:42):
the best Bearcat cariers. If I think of UC football,
and it's the highest complement I can give. Corey Kiner
is a guy that I think about. He embodies everything
you want in a UC football player. Back to back
thousand yard seasons, twenty three carries for a buck ten
and a touchdown. Evan Pryor was not much of a factor.
Joe Royer had seven catches. He broke the UC all
(01:29:04):
time tight end single season receptions record that was held
by Travis Kelce. So he's in the record books. Unfortunately,
nothing else in the record book. For the Cincinnati Bearcats,
Corey Kiner lost to fumble, Jimoi Mays lost to fumble,
Brendan soerzby throw an interception. They could not overcome the miscues.
(01:29:25):
They could not get anything going offensively, and a five
and two start ends with a five and seven finish.
In those losses, twenty three to twenty four, seventeen, fifteen,
thirteen were the point totals. They failed to eclipse the
twenty five point plateau in their final seven football games.
(01:29:53):
No rhyme or reason. It's not good enough. You're having
players now leave for the portal. You've got to pick
this back up from scratch. We talked about going into
the season that a bowl game was the starting point
for expectations. They failed those expectations and finished five and
(01:30:14):
seven in the Big Twelve, disappointing end to a mostly
disappointing season. In year two for the Cincinnati Bearcats, under
head coach Scott Saderfield, I know there's people out there
that say he should lose his job. That's not happening.
I mean, I think he's owed eighteen million dollars. If
they try to buy out his contract, that's not happening.
Speaker 3 (01:30:36):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:30:36):
How they go about recruiting, how they go about raising
the nil and using it in the transfer portal, which
has already been active of players leaving, that's another conversation.
Speaker 5 (01:30:49):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
Joe Royer and Dante Corleon and a couple others could
come back if they decide to. But you're gonna lose
a lot You're losing a lot of leaders on this team,
and I end the season with the UC Bearcats with
way more questions than I have answers, and that is
a significant problem going forward. Let's take a break, let's
(01:31:12):
come back. Let's look around the rest of what happened
over the weekend on the football slate in the NFL
and the college slate as well, and what it sets
up going into this week. All still ahead on the
Monday Midday Quarterback Thanks to our friends at Cincy Sharts

Speaker 3 (01:32:13):
All right, welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:32:14):
It is the third and final hour of the Monday
midday Quarterback ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station. Before we go,
we do need to look around, I'm sorry, before we
dive into more of the Bengals. You'll hear from Joe
Burrow in the next segment. Let's take a look real
quick about what went on around the rest of the
league over the holiday weekend. I know Austin covered Thursday night.
(01:32:35):
It was the Chiefs somehow, some way, Austin on Friday
doing what I don't understand how they do, and that's
win games.
Speaker 3 (01:32:41):
They have no business winning. Yeah, it just they should
have lost that game.
Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
Say what you want about it. They find ways to
win games. They have no business.
Speaker 4 (01:32:49):
What I don't understand about what happened at the end
of the Chiefs game is how there is an official
running in YEP making the false start motion YEP, which
would have nullified that fumbled snap by Aidan O'Connell. Yeah,
and then all of a sudden it turns into an
illegal shift. Yep, I don't buy it for a second.
Make it make sense.
Speaker 2 (01:33:11):
Chargers beat the Falcons seventeen thirteen behind some very good
defense from the Chargers. Yes, start thinking about Michael Pennox. Yeah,
if you're the Falcons one hundred percent. Vikings come back
from down late to score ten in the fourth and
beat the Arizona Cardinals twenty three to twenty two. How
about the Colts scoring with under a minute left and
then going for two in the win and they get
(01:33:32):
that win with an Anthony Anthony Richardson run. Colts beat
the Patriots twenty five to twenty four. Sanstichen may have
saved his yep, and Chris Ballard's job yep. Correct, You
know whose job is not safe anymore? As Aaron Rodgers
no abysmal yesterday. They're up twenty one to seven in
the second with a chance to go in and uh
(01:33:52):
and add a score. Instead, Leonard Williams the first ever
three hundred pounder to go two yards on a pick
six just to play after Aaron Rodgers misses a wide
open Garrett Wilson in the end zone for a touchdown
that probably would have ended the game. Instead, Seahawks win
it twenty six, twenty one. How about the Commanders. Man
(01:34:14):
Before you could even get in your seat, it was
twenty eight to nothing yesterday against the Tennessee Titans. Will
Levis not very good. That Titans team not very good.
Jayden Daniels was awesome yesterday, as was Brian Robinson. Commanders
dominate the Tennessee Titans forty two to nineteen, and I
(01:34:35):
will take no type of Cliff Kingsbury Victory Lapis. He's
getting ready to probably interview for the Chicago Bears head
coaching job. Texans beat the Jaguars. Texans don't look great.
Jaguars play most of the game without Trevor Lawrence. After
one of the dirtiest hits you'll ever see on a quarterback, YEP,
scary situation in Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (01:34:55):
He should be suspended. I think he ended up will
be getting suspended percent no place for it. Ho hum
kind of game. By the way, the Texans are not good.
Speaker 2 (01:35:03):
Nope, but they're eight and five somehow someway they're not good,
but they are eight and five. Rams beat the Seahawks
or the Saints twenty one to fourteen. Buccaneers needed overtime
and at Truba Hubbard fumble to get a field goal
and a win over the Carolina Panthers, who are playing
(01:35:23):
a lot better. Is playing a lot better. He's starting
to look like a number one pick. Yeah. How big
of a problem do the Baltimore Ravens have right now?
At kicker? Yes, I said that at kicker with Justin Tucker,
missed an extra point, missed two other field goals throughout
the game. Eagles win twenty four to nineteen, and much
of the fashion they've been doing Jalen Hurts under twenty
(01:35:45):
pass attempts. Saquon Barkley's phenomenal. AJ Brown's really good. That
team is fun to watch, and that was a statement
win on the road in Baltimore last night.
Speaker 4 (01:35:57):
Yeah, absolutely it was. I don't I don't think they're
gonna do anything with Justin Tucker. I don't think that
you can. I think you just kind of kind of
ride it out and see what happens. But that's a
tough scene for them. I don't know that Baltimore is
really if they win in if they win in January,
(01:36:19):
it's going to because of Derrick Henry, not really because
of Lamar Jackson, certainly not because of their defense.
Speaker 3 (01:36:24):
And Philly is really good. Philly is a good team.
Speaker 4 (01:36:27):
After watching all the games yesterday, Detroit convinced it's Philly
in Detroit, in the NFC, Kansas City and Buffalo and the.
Speaker 2 (01:36:33):
AFC looks like Christian McCaffrey is going to miss the
end of the rest of the year with an injury
lower body injury. It wasn't about that yesterday. It was
about how good Buffalo looked last night. Josh Allen threw
two touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (01:36:45):
He's the MVP.
Speaker 2 (01:36:45):
He essentially caught a touchdown pass on a hook and ladder.
He ran a touchdown in I think what's a little
under appreciated at times is how good James Cook has
been for that team.
Speaker 4 (01:36:56):
That's a good fit again. Entire identity. Yep, they got
rid of a bunch of old slow players on defense,
changed their identity to best suit their skill in their
personnel and look at them.
Speaker 2 (01:37:12):
Kin Kid was out last night, Dawson Knox, Khalil Shakir,
Quinton Morris, James Cook, Amari Cooper, Mac Collins, Matt Collins
who doesn't work foot Mac Collins kind of touch Yeah,
that is the the NFL slate of the weekend. That
was from a college slate over the course of the
weekend Rivalry Weekend Georgia had no business beating Georgia Tech. Yep,
(01:37:34):
and they do so in seven to eight overtimes. College
football overtime rules are stupid. Eight overtimes. Boise and Aston
genty make a final push for the Heisman. Boise finishes
eleven and one. Old Miss beats up on Mississippi State Colorado.
They did it a week late because it doesn't matter
now because they're in the Big Twelve title game fifty
(01:37:55):
two to nothing over Oklahoma State.
Speaker 3 (01:37:56):
No matter a far fall.
Speaker 2 (01:37:58):
Oklahoma State was a Big Twelve title favorite at the
start of the year. Crazy they finished to nine in
the Big Twelve. I think I saw a post that
like UC had like at the beginning of the year,
one of the easiest strength of schedules. Yeah, and it
ended up being one of the hard and one of
the toughest. Big Twelve was madness this year. Oregon ends
up pulling away from Washington, Texas, Texas A and M
(01:38:20):
really was kind of a snooze. Festa Texas wins seventeen
was until the very end, but you know they made
it interesting.
Speaker 15 (01:38:27):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:38:27):
Penn State forty four to seven winners. They are in
the Big Ten title game. Notre Dame hung forty nine
at USC. How about syracusean Kyle McCord, You know what
do you miss Kyle McCory?
Speaker 3 (01:38:38):
Now I don't, but good for him. Man, did you
see what he said after the game. I saw what
he did.
Speaker 4 (01:38:44):
He was asked, you know, is it how much does
it mean to you? You know, for to perform the
way you did today and know that. Yeah, Ohio State
lost to Michigan, and he said, everything comes full circle.
Speaker 3 (01:38:56):
Man, it's all he said. Real recognized. Real.
Speaker 2 (01:39:00):
Tennessee went down early. They come from behind to win
at Vanderbilt. SMU dominant over cal Indiana sixty six. Nothing
over produced South Carolina. They went and beat Clemson. Alabama
takes care of Auburn, Arizona State dominated Arizona. Iowa State
hangs on to beat Kansas State BYU a thirty to
eighteen winner over Houston. Missouri beats Arkansas and that's pretty
(01:39:23):
much it for the college football landscape and sets the
clear path forward. MAC Championship game mentioned earlier, Miami of
Ohio punches their ticket. They're going to play against Ou
in another MAC championship game. Outside of that, this coming
weekend Big twelve title game Iowa Arizona State or Iowa
State Arizona State. SEC Title game is Georgia, Texas, Big
(01:39:44):
Tens Penn State, Oregon, and the ACC is Clemson and SMU.
What happens in the ACC if Clemson beats SMU?
Speaker 3 (01:39:52):
I have no idea.
Speaker 2 (01:39:53):
Not good for the College Football Playoff. College FOOTBA Playoff
rankings come out tomorrow. Speaking of rankings, I know it's
the Monday midday quarterback Austin, but the Cincinnati Bearcats, who
traveled to Villanova tomorrow night are now up to fifteen
or fourteen in the AP pole. Michigan did knock off
Xavier over the weekend, so Xavier drops out of the
(01:40:13):
AP top twenty five, but the Bearcats in action at
Villanova tomorrow do move up to number fourteen.
Speaker 4 (01:40:20):
Also see this from Keen and Nickolson that the Bearcats
have flipped offensive lineman Marcus McGregor from Wyoming. He's a
six foot three, two hundred and eighty pound interior offensive
lineman out of Iowa. So it looks like a win
for Scott Sadderfield in the recruiting trail, getting Marcus McGregor
to flip from Wyoming.
Speaker 2 (01:40:39):
Do U see what a way to move forward from
this segment than that positive news?
Speaker 5 (01:40:43):
Did you?
Speaker 2 (01:40:44):
I know how Logan Wilson got hurt? No, Seldon Rangins
has an illness.
Speaker 4 (01:40:48):
Yeah, I bet he does it for a while. Yeah,
I'm sick of watching him. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:40:53):
We'll take a break and we'll talk about guy has
been a dud, A lot of them, A lot of duds.
Speaker 3 (01:40:58):
Just kind of hanging out.
Speaker 2 (01:41:00):
Take a break, all right, man, how about some Joe
Burrow when we come back. Sounds good post game? Let's
do excitement.
Speaker 3 (01:41:04):
Let's do it.
Speaker 2 (01:41:05):
Monday Midday Quarterback, ESPN fifteen thirty thanks to Penn Station, Lowegar.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
We've talked about this a lot. He's got what you want, Like,
who's the go to guy?
Speaker 11 (01:41:14):
Gonna be interviews, his views and your palls.
Speaker 3 (01:41:17):
Go to guy isn't the team's leading.
Speaker 22 (01:41:18):
School Lowegar Today at three on ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 20 (01:41:23):
Thirty MinC three sixty is back on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 3 (01:41:33):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:41:34):
Moving along our number three, the Monday midday quarterback thanks
to Penn Station. Uh here is the quarterback of the
Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow with his postgame press conference comments
after yesterday's loss to the Pittsburgstealers.
Speaker 5 (01:41:48):
No, for I got a little I got cleared on
the first play of the game on my right leg,
so I had a little gosh on that. But other
than that, it's all goods.
Speaker 9 (01:42:00):
Everybody is a little more like you.
Speaker 5 (01:42:03):
Know. The only one right now is the the leg
that I got cleared on. Other than that, I feel good.
You know, things pop up a couple of days after
the game that you don't really know about right now, what.
Speaker 15 (01:42:16):
For any points on the board against that defas But
you know, I obviously enough for the reason I mean,
but how do you feel about doing that?
Speaker 9 (01:42:25):
Bad defense? Football team?
Speaker 5 (01:42:27):
Not enough to win? Not enough to win? We uh,
some good, some bad, just like every week, but not
enough to win.
Speaker 2 (01:42:35):
Why do you think you guys have not played complimentary
football at all all the year?
Speaker 5 (01:42:43):
You know, we just haven't executed the way we needed to.
H Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:42:49):
Do you think it's something different every week or do
you see a common denominator?
Speaker 5 (01:42:59):
Mm hmm, okay, something different every week? A little things
are in there, and I do yeah, I know, I
know the work those guys put in, you know, they
work really hard all week to to go and put
their best foot forward. You know, there's been some tough games,
but there's been some good ones too, something different things
(01:43:27):
A good point. I think every game is its own challenge,
and each week has been frustrating in its own way.
This week, you know, on offense, we you know, we
had a couple of fall starts. You know I didn't
(01:43:51):
you know, I had to fumbles picked the you know,
Cam Hayward made a great plays, a great player. Nothing
would have done differently on that one. You know, obviously
we got to take care of the ball better. It
starts with me. Yeah, some good and some bad.
Speaker 21 (01:44:19):
And pressure to create any knowing everyone.
Speaker 5 (01:44:26):
I would say that, and I've been really happy with
my playmaking ability this year. You know it's not you know,
every every game is its own challenge, and you know,
quickly change your mindset into into playmaking mode when you
(01:44:47):
know maybe you would take a check down or take
a go to the running back quickly in some spots.
But you know that's not where we're at.
Speaker 20 (01:44:58):
Platforms, I mean.
Speaker 5 (01:45:01):
Platform the No, I'm feeling good in that department. You know,
I work at I work it hard every week. Thursday
is my my day to you know, throw on the run.
You know, Thursday's a big workday for me, and that's
where I feel like I get the most done. I
think I've taken a big step in that department this year.
Speaker 39 (01:45:27):
No one.
Speaker 19 (01:45:29):
Place, essentially is that? Is that an example that maybe.
Speaker 5 (01:45:36):
You know, the first one, I would say I probably
held on to it a little long. I could have
found the the tight end early, especially at that point
in the game. You know. The second one, you know,
I felt like I was getting the ball out pretty
quickly on that one, and you know that I made
a good play. Keep the pressure maybe, yeah, I feel it.
(01:46:07):
I feel it. You know, I feel that the the
the pressure on me to be great. You know, that's
that's part of playing quarterback in the NFL. You know,
I just have to I have to play to the
absolute peak of my ability every week for us to
go and win. And uh, you know, some games I've
done that, some games I haven't. And so you know,
(01:46:32):
I'm just trying to be as consistent as I can
from the team, try to take care of the ball
better and go from there.
Speaker 21 (01:46:39):
I mean, basically have to.
Speaker 18 (01:46:41):
Play perfect each week in this division. Do you feel
like that's a sustainable way.
Speaker 5 (01:46:48):
I feel like I can do anything just Chase that
Chase has a big series.
Speaker 3 (01:46:58):
Take anything away.
Speaker 28 (01:47:00):
H mm hmm.
Speaker 5 (01:47:05):
They started playing more single high I would say that's
tough to say without watching the tape. You know that's
a good defense. They have really good players. They're gonna
make plays, and they play their scheme to their strengths,
and they know how they know the strengths of their players,
and their strength is up front, so they try to
(01:47:28):
make it tough on you to get it out quickly
and try to make you hold on to it and
let those guys get after you try to get better.
You know, you're gonna whatever you put on tape is
(01:47:49):
is out there forever, whether it's effort or execution or
playmaking ability. Ah. You know, in GMS and in scouts
go and look at the tape in the off season
when they're looking to go and get guys, they're not
gonna care what the score is. They're gonna care how
hard you play. They're gonna care how you execute and
(01:48:11):
how many plays you make. And so for me, I'm
just gonna try keep trying to be as consistent as
I can and try to put us in good spots.
(01:48:36):
You know, I'm just gonna keep keep plugging a long
day to day, keep trying to get better. There's still
a lot of reps too, to improve your game and
and put great stuff on tape. That's that's what I'm
focused on. Ah, Keep trying to to make plays, get
the balls, to get the ball to my guys in
(01:48:56):
space and let them go make plays. Keep trying to
do that.
Speaker 4 (01:49:03):
Point when it looked like they were they were.
Speaker 5 (01:49:07):
That was a disappointing call. You know, I got a
lot of respect for that crew, But if they missed
that one, I mean, how much is that going to? Yeah,
big playing the game, big play in the game. We
there's about I don't know, maybe two minutes fifty seconds
left about that point, and that's the first down for us,
(01:49:29):
and you know, maybe we go get points, maybe we don't,
but you know, then they get the ball and they
go get three, and you know, I don't think they
do that if if the call is correct in that situation,
you know, a lot more went went wrong than that,
But that was a big call in the game.
Speaker 18 (01:49:47):
In reality that you're probably not going to make the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (01:49:52):
Playoffs, I mean, furthest thing from my mind. You know,
you never know what can happen. So, like I said,
I'm just going to keep putting one foot for the other,
try to be the best player that I can be
for the rest of the season and and weekend and
week out, day in and day out, trying to be
the best that.
Speaker 22 (01:50:11):
I can be.
Speaker 5 (01:50:11):
When you get your.
Speaker 21 (01:50:14):
Last year changed, this year.
Speaker 5 (01:50:17):
It's not great.
Speaker 3 (01:50:18):
Do you feel like when you look at the way
you guys.
Speaker 2 (01:50:20):
Are structured as teams and the way you play, that
you might need to.
Speaker 11 (01:50:25):
Change something to be able to see.
Speaker 5 (01:50:29):
I would say we need to change a lot of
things this year. We haven't been good enough. We haven't
been good enough to win games. So it starts with
your division. You always want to win those and we haven't.
So we got to do a better job going downs.
Speaker 2 (01:50:47):
There a play cold or was that a un play
to get them to the jump?
Speaker 5 (01:50:52):
I'll die with that one. I don't know, we'll see.
I mean.
Speaker 18 (01:51:00):
Just about conversations about this.
Speaker 21 (01:51:11):
Process.
Speaker 5 (01:51:17):
Yeah, you try to give your opinion in ways that
that you feel comes over the best. You know this
is a tough season and you know the cornerstones of
this organization are going to be remembered by more than
(01:51:40):
just this season, and we will be remembered by how
we handle this. And you know, it's still an exciting
opportunity to go out and play for the city and
for this team every every week, weekend, and week out.
That's something that I don't take for granted, especially with
my injury history. You know, I been on the sidelines
(01:52:00):
and that's not a fun feeling. So I love being
out there for the guys, for for the city, for
the for the team, for ownership, and uh, you know,
I love playing. And I think we'll learn a lot
about who we have in the locker room, the guys
(01:52:22):
that we can count on going forward, the guys that
we can't, and uh, you know, I think the next
the next six weeks, five weeks are gonna say a
lot about about who we can count on and who
we can't.
Speaker 11 (01:52:39):
All.
Speaker 9 (01:52:39):
Right, there you have it.
Speaker 2 (01:52:40):
That is Joe Burrow speaking to the media after yesterday's lost.
I think that was a fitting way to end it
and looking forward, well, he should sit out this and
that No, I think it's legitimately what he said there.
You're you're gonna be able to tell who's in and
who's out, and you're gonna be able to gain a
lot over over this, uh this next five game stretch.
(01:53:01):
At least some people you mentioned earlier, if Jamar Chase
sits out in the contract situation, whatever. But I still
think there's a lot to play for, and I still
think that there's some decisions that will have to be made.
Speaker 3 (01:53:12):
Over the next five weeks.
Speaker 4 (01:53:13):
I just don't see the people on this team, especially
the leaders, as Joe mentioned, calling him the cornerstones. I
don't see them stepping out. Yeah, I don't see them
kind of giving up on this. Just doesn't seem like
anything on who they would be. So with that, we'll break.
I'm heading to Florence. Austin's got it the rest of
the way since he three to sixty the Monday Midday
Quarterback on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station thanks to
(01:53:35):
Penn Station Experience.
Speaker 22 (01:53:36):
Though Value fifteen thirty Cincinnati available everywhere with the iHeartRadio app. Yeah,
number one for podcasting ESPN fifteen thirty and iHeartRadio station.
Speaker 4 (01:53:52):
Monday Midday Quarterback continues. I'm Austin Elmore. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty. Just a couple minutes here, and then we'll
go down to Twin Peaks and check in with Moegger
Mo of course, part of the Tony and Mo Football
Show coming up this afternoon. You know, it's safe to
(01:54:13):
say it was a rough weekend for me. I really don't.
I don't have many thoughts to share about Ohio State,
mainly because people don't care. It's just devastating. It's heartbreaking,
it sucks. I hate them. You feel like your dog died,
and it's just it's just not good. It's not good
(01:54:35):
at all. But then with with Ohio State losing, I
didn't expect that. With the Bengals getting their ass kicked yesterday,
I did expect that because they're not a very good
football team. And I don't know if there's anything that
I can really say that will, you know, kind of
I think Joe really kind of summed it up about
(01:54:58):
as perfectly as you can in that press conference.
Speaker 3 (01:55:03):
They need to make changes, and I expect them to
make changes.
Speaker 4 (01:55:08):
I know that everybody wants to say that Mike Brown
is cheap and that the family is cheap, and that
they don't have what it takes to do things and
they never change, but it's just not true. I don't
think Mike Brown is a stupid man. I don't think
Katie and Troy are stupid people. I don't think Elizabeth
(01:55:28):
is stupid. They know just as much as anybody else
that the way that this season has gone is unacceptable,
and I expect them to make changes. I expect Loui
an Arumo to be gone. I expect multiple defensive coaches
to be gone. I expect Frank Pollack to be gone.
(01:55:49):
I don't expect any of those changes to be made
during the season, right, wrong, or indifferent. I don't expect
those changes to be made during the season. So unfortunately,
now this year has become about evaluation and trying to
figure out what exactly you're going to do moving forward
(01:56:12):
in how you want to build the roster, because I
think this team over the last couple of years has
been built to beat Kansas City and built to beat Buffalo,
the guys who are the top notch teams in the NFL,
in the AFC and still are, but not enough has
(01:56:35):
been made and not enough has been done to beat
and win the division the last couple of years prior
to Pittsburgh. I mean Pittsburgh's obviously been down, had quarterback problems.
Cleveland has been respectable at least the last couple of years,
have had good teams, good defenses. The Bengals have not
(01:56:55):
done well against those two teams. They've been competitive against Baltimore,
but lately it's basically been all Baltimore. They obviously were
one and six in the division a year ago. They
haven't got any favors by the schedule makers, some short weeks,
some primetime games in the division.
Speaker 9 (01:57:10):
I get it.
Speaker 4 (01:57:13):
But part of the rebuilding and the restructuring of this
roster that has to happen, you need to do it
with the AFC North in mind, because you can't get
to where you want to go without going through those teams,
and you got to face them six times, and there
is a clear disadvantage right now in talent, I mean
(01:57:35):
even defensively, Cleveland is so much better than the Bengals,
it's ridiculous. And they've done and made some smart moves
on the offensive side of the ball. Have the Cleveland
Browns they haven't all worked out because they've had a
ton of offensive line injuries and the Deshaun Watson situation,
that fiasco but they've got talent. They could turn it
around quickly. Baltimore clearly fixed their Issuesburg clearly fixed their issues.
(01:58:03):
So moving forward, it has to be less about, Okay,
we got to beat Kansas City in Buffalo, and it
has to be about we've got to build a team
that can win in the AFC North. You got to
start with that, and then once you get to the playoffs,
Joe Burrow and the rest of this team should be
able to figure it out from there against any other opponent.
(01:58:25):
Because if you can win in this division, you can
win anything. And we've seen that in the two years
that they went to the playoffs and went in that
deep run they won the AFC North. Have got to
be able to get back to that style of football,
that brand of football, and we're gonna have a lot
of time over the next couple months to kind of
figure out the ins and outs of the organization, what
(01:58:47):
they do well, what they do poorly, what they need
to improve. The sad part is we will not hear
from them. We won't hear from Mike or Katie or
Troy or Duke. We're only going to hear from Zach
and we're never really going to get a peek into
what they're thinking or what they're doing, because they don't
allow us to do that. And sometimes that doesn't benefit
(01:59:08):
them as much as they think it does, because it
only makes the noise louder and the questions harsher, and
the doubt more and more severe. But that's the life
that we have to live as Bengals fans. We don't
really know what they're thinking. We can hope for the
best kind of expect the worst. But I do not
think that people in that organization are stupid. And I
(01:59:31):
don't think for a second that they will sit by
and look at the twenty twenty four Bengals and all
that they've done and all that they've invested and think, eh,
we'll just keep doing what we're doing. I don't think
they're that stupid. I don't think they're stupid at all.
It just sucks. Disappointment sucks, expectations suck.
Speaker 3 (01:59:52):
Not meeting them.
Speaker 4 (01:59:53):
It sucks, and there's no other way around that. We'll
take a break. Talk to Tony and Mo next ESPN
fifteen thirty from the Clements Heating and Air Temps Star Weather.
Speaker 20 (02:00:03):
Center in fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. It's time for
Cincy three sixty quick.
Speaker 9 (02:00:09):
Hits on ESPN.
Speaker 4 (02:00:11):
Welcome In, Welcome in, Quick Hits and Locks of the Night, Austin,
elmore with you, and we now go out to Twin Peaks.
Speaker 3 (02:00:16):
Which Twin Peaks are you at today?
Speaker 19 (02:00:18):
Mo, Well, we're here in Florence, Austinance. Yes, we're here
in Boom County, Kentucky. Is football showed the next two
weeks today and then next Tuesday because the Bengals play
a must win game on Monday night.
Speaker 9 (02:00:31):
Austin.
Speaker 19 (02:00:32):
Yeah, and so we'll be here on Tuesday, but Kentucky
the next two weeks. We're here from three to six
today at a beautiful Twin Peaks. Great place to post
up and spend a delightful early December Monday afternoon.
Speaker 4 (02:00:45):
Were you surprised about anything that you saw yesterday at
pay Course Stadium?
Speaker 9 (02:00:50):
Not really?
Speaker 19 (02:00:50):
And I think that was the sobering thing, right, Yeah,
So I think yesterday was the end of us lying
to ourselves.
Speaker 9 (02:01:00):
Let's be honest, we've done this all year along.
Speaker 19 (02:01:02):
Well, you know, you know, they're coming off a bye
and the Steelers offensively, this team's defense is atrocious, okay,
and atrocious defenses play atrocious against good offenses, but they
also play atrocious against bad offenses. And the Steelers don't
have a bad offense. But let's be honest, man, and
I put this on social media at some point during
the game. Pittsburgh Steelers were not exactly reinventing offensive football, right.
Speaker 9 (02:01:25):
Hey, let's leak a guy out.
Speaker 19 (02:01:27):
Of the backfield, put him in the middle of the field,
have him catch a pass, and see if anybody can
tackle him.
Speaker 3 (02:01:31):
That's hard to do's never seen that before.
Speaker 19 (02:01:34):
Yeah, let's put justin fields on the field on third
and whatever it was, and let the entire stadium know
we're gonna run the football.
Speaker 9 (02:01:41):
We know this team can't stop it. We have known
all year long. This team's defense has stunk. What we
have spent a lot of time doing is lying to ourselves.
Speaker 19 (02:01:49):
Well, you know what, they could just they could just
get a couple of stops they sneak in. Now, this
team Austin might be the best ten seed of all time.
They're the ten seed you don't want to play, Or
are they gonna be the eleven seed you don't want
to play? Scary eleven seed the Bengals have this year.
What a pathetic showing by the defense yesterday. What a
(02:02:11):
pathetic display after the game by Jermaine Pratt who doesn't
seem to know what a mistackle is, even though he
was guilty of some of them yesterday. And now moving forward,
we're gonna trust Duke Tobin to rebuild this defense from scratch. Great, Yeah,
can't wait.
Speaker 4 (02:02:25):
Yeah, it's I mean, he pretty much summed it up.
That's kind of everything that I've been thinking. Is just
like they teams would have been licking their chops to
play the Bengals in the playoffs had they gone on
a run. And now all of a sudden, you got
Dallas coming up, and they look like a much different
football team over the last three weeks. It's not like
they're just gonna you know, I said this to Tony earlier.
(02:02:45):
It's kind of amazing they've won four games.
Speaker 5 (02:02:48):
It is.
Speaker 3 (02:02:49):
Isn't it crazy to say?
Speaker 19 (02:02:51):
Yeah, and like, once and for all, can we stop
taking some solace in what the schedule provides?
Speaker 3 (02:02:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (02:02:57):
Right, we're gonna do it again.
Speaker 19 (02:02:59):
We're gonna have a the schedule release show, I guess,
and we're gonna come on immediately after the schedule comes out,
and we're gonna look at soft spots in the schedule,
they should win all these games.
Speaker 9 (02:03:09):
Dude, fix your football team. This team is broken broken.
Speaker 4 (02:03:14):
Should they make changes to the coaching staff before the
end of the season, sure, I will, They probably not.
Speaker 19 (02:03:23):
Zach Taylor's gonna talk at three o'clock today. If you're
going to do that, I guess you would announce that
at some point today. I think if you're if you're
serious about, hey, we're really gonna try to compete over
these final five games and play until we're mathematically eliminated.
Speaker 9 (02:03:40):
I don't I don't know what else you can do.
Speaker 19 (02:03:43):
I don't know what else you can do on the
defensive side of the ball besides swap out play callers.
But the bigger question than I have is the one
that I just pose like, we're gonna trust Duke Tobin
to rebuild this defense from.
Speaker 9 (02:03:54):
Scratch, like seriously, because that's what they have to do.
Speaker 19 (02:03:58):
There's nobody good on this Trey Hendrickson's a very good player.
He's also now on the other side of thirty ye
who else is good on this defense? Whilst do you
want to keep how many of these guys have played
defense for the Bengals, would have played for Pittsburgh yesterday. Right,
how many of those teams, how many of those players
would play on the better defenses in this sport? So
you have to start from scratch. So Duke Tobin's gonna
(02:04:21):
do that? Awesome, can't wait?
Speaker 3 (02:04:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:04:26):
Yeah, the bear Cats played on Saturday. Thank God, that
season's over, right, right?
Speaker 3 (02:04:36):
Lying to ourselves, right.
Speaker 9 (02:04:39):
You had to go from five to two to five
and seven?
Speaker 19 (02:04:41):
Is they have a monumental task in front of them
to sell people on the idea that this program is.
Speaker 9 (02:04:51):
Going in the right direction.
Speaker 19 (02:04:53):
It may be, and this may end with Scott Saderfield
winning multiple Big twelve titles, but we talked before the
season started about you do need tangible proof. I don't
know that losing your last five games is tangible proof
that this is going in the right direction. And I am,
you know, with what Tony said before. I think this
(02:05:15):
team had talented players this year. I don't think this
is a five and seven football team. I don't think
they're an eleven and one team or a ten and
two team by any stretch. I think they underachieve relative
to the talent they have. And and that's that's that's
really that's really hard to ignore.
Speaker 9 (02:05:36):
As we talk about what lies ahead.
Speaker 19 (02:05:38):
The reality is the job of football coach at you see,
has always been about, in part at least energizing the
fan base. Does the fan base seem energize right now
about Scott Sadderfield. I don't think the answer is yes, correct,
And I think that's a very fair observation. I like
Scott Sadderfield. I think they have done a good job
(02:06:00):
in terms of overhauling the roster from what it was
last year. But to go five and seven and to
play worse as the season went on is really really hard.
It's it's really really hard to feel like, yeah, this
is full speed ahead, this is going in.
Speaker 9 (02:06:19):
The right direction.
Speaker 3 (02:06:20):
Do you think the Bearcats will have interest in Ryan
Day when he's available?
Speaker 9 (02:06:25):
So if he wins the national title, I mean, but
you want him to win the national team.
Speaker 3 (02:06:32):
Of course, but it would still feel hollow.
Speaker 9 (02:06:35):
But like, isn't that a you problem?
Speaker 3 (02:06:38):
Yes, that's it's a problem with the rivalry. That's what
that's how the rivalry is.
Speaker 9 (02:06:42):
So so maybe the problem isn't Ryan Day. Perhaps it's
the inflation of the round.
Speaker 3 (02:06:46):
The problem is Ryan Day.
Speaker 19 (02:06:47):
For the problem is Ryan Day in one game a year,
one game a year, correct, right? I mean imagine if
if you were judged on having one bad day a year,
what I.
Speaker 3 (02:06:58):
Was got ten losses since he's in Ohio state and
four of them or that?
Speaker 19 (02:07:01):
Right, So maybe the problem isn't Ryan Day. Maybe the
problem is the inflation of that rivalry.
Speaker 9 (02:07:06):
Right.
Speaker 19 (02:07:07):
The rivalry doesn't determine whether or not you play for
a championship. Just play for a championship.
Speaker 3 (02:07:11):
Yeah, I guess it used to twelve.
Speaker 9 (02:07:14):
How about this? How about this?
Speaker 19 (02:07:16):
Deflate the rivalry, deflate its importance. Well, then then then
plan on feeling this way for an extended period of time,
Plan on a lot of people looking at that job
going hell, no, wait a minute, I can go eleven
and one. I could put dudes in the NFL. I
could play for championships. I have a bad day every
one Saturday, and.
Speaker 3 (02:07:34):
We got to thank you so much.
Speaker 9 (02:07:36):
Deflate.
Speaker 3 (02:07:36):
We'll talk to you in a couple of seconds and
plant the Flat and Football Show. Next ESPN fifty to thirty,
the
Speaker 9 (02:07:42):
Quest for Super Bowl fifty nine heats up with the
