Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Football in the NATI, brought to you by
Hey During Window Company on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official
home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome back. It is Football in the NATI on the
home of the Bengals, ESBN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Thanks again to our friends at Skyline Chile, or anytime
you're feeling good and hungry at Skyline time. Let's talk
about Austin right now, the highest rated quarterback as it
relates to QBR in the country, authoring one of the
(00:33):
best offenses in the country, coming off a win against
a very good Kansas team in a hostile environment, and
now returning to Nippert Stadium against the fourteenth ranked Iowa
State Cyclones. Brendan Soresby is joining us right now. Brendan,
what's going on, man?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
What's going on? Thanks for having me absolutely.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
How you doing, man? How's the week going? You come
off a big win against Kansas, you know better than anyone.
You get to enjoy it for a few minutes and
then you're onto Ill State. What's the last couple of
days been like a.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Lot of recovery. Body was a little banged.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Up right after the game, you know, traveling after a
win is definitely a lot better.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
So that was a fun experience.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
And then you know, once we got back, just making
sure we got our bodies right ready to go for
our Tuesday practice. So the preparation has been good, everybody focused,
everybody blocked in and ready to go on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
How big of a weight does it lift off the shoulders,
because you guys have been very competitive and there have
been times where it's just come up a player too
short to get the ball back laid against Kansas to
play as efficiently as you guys did offensively, you didn't
have Joe Royer in the second half defensively, no Dante
Corleone in the game to get that ball back, go
(01:45):
down and finish that off. How much momentum does that
now build for a team?
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Well, I know, just like you know the fans have
gone through it with the one score ball game is
not going our way.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I trust me.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
You know as a player that whenever you're on the
losing side of those, you start to lose confidence. And
you know, we were finally on the right side of
one of those and came out victorious. So you know,
being able to carry.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
That momentum going for it would be huge.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
For us, knowing that we can do it, knowing that
we can win those close games and go close it out,
you know, and just playing playing a complimentary football on
all three phases. You know, that was a really good
offensive team over there in Kansas, and you know, we
knew that they were going to be able to score.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Points just you know they do on they do on everybody.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
So you know, our defense bailed us out whenever they
needed to, and you know, we were able to put
some drives together and put points on the board, and
at the end of the day, we won. So we
got to find a way to carry this into this
week right here and find a way to go be
a competitive team and Iowa stayed really good coach team
and you know, obviously top fifteen team in the country.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I thought about two thousand and nine a game that
I played against Pittsburgh. We're down, we get the ball late,
and before taking the field, nothing was ever really said,
but you could just tell and looking in the guy's
eyes there was a confidence that you were going to
go down and win the game. You guys got the
ball back down thirty four to thirty with a minute
forty five left, you go on a ten play drive.
(03:05):
Take me to the sideline. Before the drive started, was
there anything that needed to be said or did you
guys kind of know what was ahead of end what
needed to be done.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
You know, everybody understood what needed to be done. Obviously,
you know, we're dapping each other up, saying, you know,
we we got this, we know what we're gonna do.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
We know we're gonna go put it in the end zone.
And you know that was that.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
I don't think I don't ever think there was too
much you know, disbelief from anybody on that sideline. I
think everybody understood that that we were going to do
whatever it took to put in the end zone. And
everybody knows how hard it is to go do that,
especially when the defense knows you have.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
To score a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
And we still had some adverse situations that drive, you know,
obviously the illegal touching and you know, just just a
couple of other things that went against us, but you know,
we found a way to persevere and go punch it
in the end zone. And I think that's just a
testament to this group of guys that we have, you know,
everybody's got a common belief in a common goal that
we want to go. We want to go win some
(04:00):
ball games this year, and we knew what it was
going to take.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
And we did it.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
I want to get to your your offensive line in
just a moment. But talk about the receiving corps. I
know Joe Royer didn't play in the second half, but
he had a huge third and long grab for twenty
yards that kept the drive alive. We've seen Jeff Codwell,
Noah Jennings with the one handed catch, Gavin Grover almost
getting to the end zone getting stopped a few inches short,
Caleb Goodie, Cyrus Allen with the career day. How fun
(04:26):
is it now that you've got these guys in the system,
you can see their confidence growing. How fun is it
to be able to spread the ball around to your
receiving corps.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah, it's a blast. You know. It makes my life easy.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
It makes my job, you know, fun for sure, to
just be able to go out there and say, hey,
you know, let these guys will make plays and you
know they make me look a lot better than I am.
So just finding a way to get these guys the ball.
And like you said, Grover stepping up whenever.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Joe went down. After Joe made an amazing catch on
third down. You know, we'll be able to get Joe
back this week. And I believe he's the best heid
end of the country. So that's huge for us.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
So, you know, just the ability of guys to step
up whenever we need them to and just make plays
is huge for us.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
And having confidence and you know, eight guys to go
out there and catch a pass for you is huge
for sure. So we're really excited about this group of
guys that we have, you know, out wide for us,
and you know, at tight end especially. So we've been
saying it.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
For a long time, but people think I always give
it a quarterback answer. I was telling the media on
Tuesday that, you know, I believe in all of our guys,
but I truly do.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
And you know, I'm willing to throw to whoever because
at the end of the day, I know they're gonna
go to make a play for me.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I look at your guys backfield, and whether it's Tyler
Walker or Evan pryor I just can't imagine a defense
having to negotiate who's getting the ball, because make no mistake,
about it. Walker doesn't want to run around you, he
wants to run through you. That's demoralizing for a corner
or a secondary player coming up to make a tackle
and then all of a sudden, Evan Pryor's got the
(05:53):
ability to bounce one or to make you miss and
then take one the distance you've got the ability to run.
How much does it put on a defense though, when
you've got that that power and the speed that can
hit in the backfield on any given day, Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Mean it puts a ton of stress on you and
especially you know, like you said, I am able to
move a little bit, which makes it harder on the
defense back to account for me. And then it gives
our guys, you know, one less body to have to
worry about.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Hopefully if I can take somebody away in the run game.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
And you know, our guys do a really good job
and one on one situations and making people miss, running
through people, whatever.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
That may be.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
So just I think I think, especially in our backquote
right now, we have a ton of different different threats
and stuff that we present. Like you just said, tell
we's a little bit more power back, but he can
shake you.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Evans more of a home run hitter.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
And then I don't even know what you want to
call me, but I can run a little bit, so
that definitely helps. And then just a pass game obviously
being explosive right now is helping.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
The run game as well.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
So if we can keep that going, I think we're
going to be a really tough offense to stop. It's
just up to us to continue to execute and make
sure that we're we're on our piece cues.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Uh. The first sack giving up of the season happened
against Kansas. I thought it was just the right play
call at the right time for Kansas. They brought a
pressure when you guys were running. A little play action
makes it a little bit tougher to block. But Uh,
the offensive line up front. You look at your running numbers,
you look at the passing game numbers, you look at
your ability to stay clean at times in the pocket.
How how important is that group up front?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Ben?
Speaker 4 (07:24):
I mean, they've been they've been a huge help for
us this year, especially, you know in the past.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Came in the wrong game.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
You know, they've been doing a really good job of
blocking for the run, and then they've been doing an
excellent job of walking and protecting for the past.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
That one sack is is very.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Unfortunate because, like you know, on a little boot leg
like that, the old line really doesn't have anything to do.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
With it, So that was unfortunate.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
I was I was trying to do everything I could
to throw it away on you know, avoid that sack, especially.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
For the big guy's sake. But you know, they're playing
really well up front and couldn't.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Be happier for that group. I love that group of guys,
and you know, I hope they continue to love me
and protect me throughout the rest of the season. I'm
gonna try to take care of them as much as
possible because they're putting their bodies in the line.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Every player.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Well, as long as you keep getting to these steak dinners,
I think they're gonna they're gonna take care of you. You
said earlier in the week that after wins, you're taking
the offensive lineman to Jeff Rubies. Is that right?
Speaker 3 (08:15):
I take them there. I try to take them there
after every win. You know, obviously Jeff Rubies is a
very top spot in Cincinnati, so it's kind of tough
to get reservations, but they usually hook us up.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
So are you we talking just the starting five linemen
or any lineman that plays in the game. How you
how do you decide who gets to go?
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Usually it's it's any lineman that plays in the game.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
So after no, after Northwestern Day, we had to make
some adjustments. We had boys.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
I don't know, I don't know about this one, but no,
it was, Uh, it's usually any lineman that plays in
the game, And you know, we try to make sure
that they're taken care of because they're doing a heck.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Of a job up plump for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
They're pushing for those those heavy linemen sets. Then they
want to they want to get six to seven linemen
in the game.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Yeah, know, they're they're trying, they're trying to coach. Carbo
keeps trying to throw all the guys in there. I'm like, hey,
we don't. We don't need to keep doing this.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
I'm telling them, yeah, before I let you go. The
way you've adapted to Scott's Saderfield system, I know that's
a big part of what you guys are able to do.
Tell me a little bit about Iowa State and some
of the challenges is that they do possess on the
defensive side of the ball for Saturday.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Yeah, they're really talented and they play really hard, so
you know we got to be we got to be
able to exec you for sure, and just make sure
that our attention to detail is really sharp.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Because you know, these guys are are obviously.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Top fifteen for a reason, So you know, we got
to go out there and do what we do. We
got to make sure we're disciplined, and like you said,
my second year in the system, I feel a lot
more confident. I feel like Coach Sadderfield's a lot more
confident me and this group. So you know, we just
got to find a way to keep the chains moving
and find a way to put points on the board.
You know, luckily, we're able to go against this type
(10:00):
of defense every day in practice, so.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
We just got to go out there and do what
we do. And I think will be good from.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Having the chance to play it at UC and watching
what you're able to do right now, there's a great
sense of pride I take in watching how you guys
are operating, how you're going about your business. Good luck
again this Saturday. Keep this thing rolling. I know the
city is electric. Everyone I talk to right now is
talking about UC Bearcat football enjoy that moment, and we
can't thank you enough for the time today.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Yes, sir, I appreciate you having me. Yes, sir.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
That is Brendan Soaresby, the quarterback of the Cincinnati Bearcats,
nice enough to join us here on game week Austin.
I am every time I get the chance to talk
to him, I'm blown away on how mature he sounds. Yeah,
like you would think that's a fifth year senior winding
down his college career. He's still young when it comes
to his time on the field. But I want to
(10:51):
see how I can get maybe on the call for
those Rubies dinners. Well, they're going to ask you to pay. No, no,
you're the Hall of Fame. I'm not in that NIOL world.
It would be on you to pay. As the Hall
of Famer, I'll work on the reservation. Oh, if I
can get the seat at the table. You have to
pay for yourself, though, is that all right? Well, whatever
(11:12):
we'll talk about. I mean, if I'm a tight end,
I'm like, hey, I'm essentially alignment here, right, Yeah, I'm
an extension here. Look at that block I had. But man,
he is mature behind beyond his years and he's got
that offense playing at a really really high level. Big
opportunity Saturday at Knippert Stadium for the Bearcats taking on
Iowa State a noon kick. This is since he three
(11:34):
