I'm your host, Jake. Let'sgo. He's your host, James
Rapeene. Before Day two, wewant to get into what the Bengals might
do on the Lockdown Bengals podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, covering
(00:49):
your team every day on the LockdownPodcast Network on YouTube. I said,
Lockdown Podcast Network tries and everywhere youget your podcasts, and that's what happens
when we do two any episodes aweek. James. Today, we're going
to take a look in a quickbonus episode as to what the Bengals might
do on day two after picking aMarius Mems with their first round pick.
For our full reaction to the AmriusMems pick, go find our most recent
(01:12):
episode on YouTube or anywhere you getyour podcasts and check that out for a
full thirty plus minutes of discussion asto why that pick made sense for the
Bengals, who they passed on,and what it means for the Bengals to
finally have a guy like Mems inthe building. But Johnny Newton's screaming at
me from the top of our bigboard, James as trade up hopes are
(01:34):
common for Bengals fans on Twitter, and unfortunately, in my opinion, unfortunately
that remains most likely fantasy Land, but something that I think we at least
discuss a little bit when we lookat their Day two options. Sure,
and here's the price. It's ifhe falls to forty thirty eight, you're
giving up ninety seven. If you'retrying to get up higher, you're probably
(01:57):
giving up eighty. Maybe you haveto throw in a six like that.
The good news is the Bengals havethat. I don't think they trade up,
Jake, and I don't think theytrade up because I'm looking at this
board, not because they don't likeJohnny Newton, because I think we all
agree they do like Johnny Newton, and if he's there at forty nine,
he probably is the pick. Butthere are a lot of guys available,
Like it's a pretty good board here, and so I think that they'll look
(02:22):
at it and say, all right, well, maybe we'll move up a
few spots if one of these topguys on our board falls. But man,
Johnny Newton, kool Aid, McKinstry, Cooper de Gene. I mean,
there are guys that we thought weregoing to get their name called last
night multiple that are still there. And then there are a bunch of ideal
(02:43):
options that should be there at fortynine or get close to forty nine,
And so if they're going to getclose, then some of those guys are
going to fall. And so Ithink that's how the Bengals view it.
But to your point, and thisis when this is the trade up for
Johnny Newton scenario. Let's say theBengals did have him in that one seed
tier, that first round column whereif they had traded down from eighteen,
(03:08):
maybe they take him at twenty threeor twenty four. And if they were
comfortable doing that, and I don'tknow if they were, but let's say
they were, then I do thinkthey're discussing the potential of trading up for
him and identifying him as the topplayer not only on their board, but
by a large gap. And ifthere is a large gap there, like
(03:29):
it is for you, I dothink the Bengals will be willing to trade
up. So I always like toextinguish the idea of trading up or even
trading back, because it's usually unlikely. The most likely scenarios they stick and
pick, But there's certainly a scenariowhere they trade up. In that scenario,
is Johnny Newton's twenty second on theirboard and the next closest player is
(03:52):
thirty fourth. Are Johnny Newton's fifteenthon their border and their next closest player
is twenty ninth, And if that'sthe case, then clearly he's worth trading
up for. And oh, bythe way, it does address a big
need as well. And if theystick and pick, there will be players
and we'll discuss the list that wewould be happy with. But Johnny Newton,
(04:13):
kol A, McKinstry, Cooper,Degene, maybe even Jackson, Powers
Johnson are in a tier of theirown. And I think that maybe there's
even two tiers there that goes JohnnyNewton, tier cool A, McKinstry,
Cooper, de Gen, Jackson,Powers, Johnson. I think Ady Mitchell,
maybe I would potentially throw in theretoo. I don't know how they
feel about him, but and hemight be gone as soon as the Bills
(04:33):
get on the clock, But notfor me personally. I'm talking about me
personally. There's Johnny Newton, Tier, mckinsrey, Degene, JPJ Tier,
and then some guys that I thinkare true second round grades. For what
we found out last night about JohnnyNewton, and it was the vibe dating
back to February. Obviously things feltlike it may have changed a little bit
(04:57):
when he visited. But the NFLis just a little cooler on john He
knew than Twitter it certainly. Andthen a draft analyst out there, because
there are plenty of them that haveJohnny Newton as the top defensive tackle.
So we saw that last night, and that could just be injury related reacting
to the late season Jones fracture thathe played through wasn't able to do a
(05:17):
lot in the pre draft process. We see players fall for this reason frequently,
and sometimes those players turn out tobe Jeff Simmons, who was still
picked in the first round despite hisinjury and a more severe injury and turned
out to be a fantastic player. And if Newton gets in to five six
picks into the first round, andI'm the Bengals. I'm throwing all of
(05:40):
my history out the window and findinga way to get up and get them.
Do I think the Bengals are goingto do that? No, But
what I would do is explore futurepicks, Explore this year's picks, explore
pick swaps, try to find away to go up and get it done.
Because if you come out of thisdraft and manage to keep your forty
ninth pick in the process, whichis what I did in my Fantasyland PFF
(06:02):
second and third round stimulation late lastnight, trading future second and eighty to
go up to like thirty eight orthirty nine. When Newton was still there.
I tried every single pick from thirtythree as long as Newton was available.
I was trying to trade up,sent the offer once to every team.
Eventually got the offer accepted, thirtyeight, thirty nine, whatever it
(06:23):
was, and I was able toget Newton and keep forty nine. And
then if you keep forty nine, you could pick from this realm of players
we're about to discuss and break down, and if you don't like the options
available to you, there, maybeyou can trade back and even recoup a
late third to make up for whatyou just gave up in this year's draft
to go up. And that's whatI ended up doing in the simulator.
(06:45):
Now we're getting into real fantasy landat that point, and I go,
You're in fantasy candy Land lane rightnow. I mean, this is this
is an Eddie Murphy Christmas special rightnow, no doubt, and I acknowledge
that. But you can get creative, and if there was ever a time
to do it when you need toreload and stock up on starters, I
think this is a great place andgreat year to do it, specifically on
(07:09):
day two and use all those Daythree picks for all I care, and
use them as you need to tosweeten the pot and move around today because
today is where the last tier ofreally likely good starters are in this draft.
Let's continue the conversation with a morerealistic discussion of who might be available
to the Bengals at pick forty ninecoming up next. Today's show is brought
(07:33):
to you by LinkedIn. When you'rehiring for your small business, you want
to find quality professionals that are rightfor the role. So hey, Zach
Taylor, get the LinkedIn jobs rightnow so you can help evaluate exactly who
you want to take a pick fortynine, exactly who you want to take
a pick eighty, exactly who youwant to take at pick ninety seven,
or in Jake's case, the reasonwhy he's so high on Johnny Newton is
(07:56):
because he went to LinkedIn jobs.He scouted Johnny Newton and LinkedIn jobs helped
him find the candidate he wanted.LinkedIn jobs can help you find the candidates
you want. On LinkedIn, eightysix percent of small businesses get a qualified
candidate within twenty four hours. Iare professionals, like a professional on LinkedIn
post your job for free at LinkedIndot com, slash locked on NFL that's
(08:16):
LinkedIn dot com. Slash locked onNFL to post your job for free.
Terms and conditions apply real quick,Jake, I think that you're right.
There are a lot of starters ontoday. It isn't just Johnny Newton to
be clear for people, and itwouldn't shock me, especially with the medicals.
I wonder how close it is.I'm just going to get into to
(08:37):
one of the guys I think isnear the top of the Bengals board at
that same position. How close isJohnny Newton medicals included versus Chris Jenkins.
I'm sure there's a gap, butI wonder how large that gap is.
That would be a question for sure. A lot of other players we're going
to talk about, but just that'sthe one for me that I do wonder
well, not just you. Ourpredictive mock was Amarius Marius Men's Chris Jenkins.
(09:01):
So we could go two for twohere if they stay at forty nine
and Chris and Chris Jenkins is infact the top of their board. And
some people seem to think I've predictedfashion to the Bengals. My only official
prediction was the mock we did onThursday night to be Jake, No one
(09:22):
cares. They get into day two. Day two, the list of players
goes Johnny Newton, Cooley, McKinstry, Cooper, de Gen, Jackson,
Powers Johnson, as we've discussed, but then it continues. You mentioned Ady
Mitchell, and then in addition tothose players who probably are picked long before
forty nine, there's what sixteen seventeenpicks before the Bengals are on the clock
(09:45):
at forty nine six you can startto talk about players like, yeah,
sixteen, and you can start totalk about players like Cooper Bebe, Troy
Franklin, Lat mccackey, Roger Rosengarten, kings Lesuemattea. If they want to
double down at offensive tackle, Iwould call that unlikely. Ben Sinnett,
Mike Hull, Chris Jenkins, rukOf roverro Zach Frasier, Christian Hayes,
(10:09):
some other interior offensive lineman could expandthe list of wide receivers to include Kean
Coleman. I would have said RickyPursall before he was picked in the first
round. Who else is on thelist? James or they are they looking?
Jonathan Brooks, Trey Benson as well? Some running backs there? Who
are we for? Yeah? Ithink those are some dark horses, maybe
some trade downs. You mentioned koolAid McKinstry. I totally agree with you
(10:30):
there. I think Mike Mike sanRastrol. San Rastrol mentioned him just because
you don't know Ben Sinnett, certainly, Brandon Dorriles, Mason Smith from LSU
in. Some of these guys thatI'm mentioning are either trade down possibilities or
could be there at eighty. Butwho knows. Maybe the Bengals really love
(10:52):
Mason Smith and they have him aheadof my call on their board. They
have him ahead of Chris Jenkins ontheir board. I would be surprised,
but they could, and so Iwant to mention that as well. But
to me, Jake, my bigquestion, it's two guys you mentioned.
Cooper degene. I wonder with himif they view him as a legitimate,
(11:13):
bona fide corner do they? Ifso, then he's very much But I
don't think they would trade up fora corner necessarily. But I think he
would be in play, just likeKhalaid McKinstry. And then Ladd mcconki.
Did he pass the medicals? Doeshe have the thumbs up? Because I
think there's a very real chance, you look at these other guys that are
available, Ladd could drop a littlebit and drop the forty nine and if
(11:35):
he's there, I do like thefootball fit. It's just a matter of
does he get the thumbs up medicallyfrom the Bengals medical staff. I think
that that first group is all topten day two candidate list kind of players
like I have a hard time believing, and stranger things have happened that any
(11:56):
of McKinstry, does Gine, JPJ, Mitchell, lab McCaughey make it to
the Bengals of forty nine, evenTroy Franklin, I would be a little
bit surprised if if he makes itall the way to forty nine, which
is why we start to talk aboutsome of the defensive tackles. Let's bet,
let's bet right now that one ofthose guys will be there at forty
nine. Well, Troy Franklin,I think like one of them. Maybe
(12:18):
I just let's bet, let's betsome ice cream on it. Next time
you're in tell I mean the guysI'm saying though, like that, I
would be specifically surprised about McKinstry,Degene, JPJ, mccacky, and I
actually think JPJ might be the mostlikely based on reports that teams were not
impressed with him from a personality perspectiveand a maturity perspective that we're hearing,
(12:41):
you know why he didn't go inthe first round. Man, if you
could get him at forty nine.Did you mention Zach Fraser by the way,
yes, I think so, okay, and that's her to make sure.
Yeah, obviously another one you didmention Christian Haines for sure. Like
that's the path is Fraser goes toa team that wants a center or guard,
maybe Cooper BB goes and then youlook up and suddenly Jackson Powers Johnson
(13:05):
is there and if he's there atforty nine, might be the top player
on your board. And I don'tthink they're necessarily planning to go O line
O line, but I don't thinkthey're completely against it. I think the
plan today is to go some trioof wide receiver, defensive tackle, and
corner. Now, interior offensive linecould be in the mix. Running back
(13:28):
could certainly be in the mix.I think tight end. There are a
few tight ends that could be inthe mix. So that's that's kind of
what the general overview of what Iexpect to see with these three picks,
assuming they don't move around and allhell breaks loose ed rusher wouldn't shock me
one bit either. That's the otherone that's outside looking in, but could
happen for sure. Yeah, Imean Chris Braswell, Austin Booker, Jonah
(13:50):
Ellis, you know, Brailn Triceand Desa Isaac, any of those guys
in the third round specifically, wouldn'tsurprise very much. And also I don't
think we've mentioned the name when Wilson, who could be in play in the
second round as well, before youget to third round. Line receivers like
Jolen Polk, Jalen Polk, uhJavon Walker. Are we sure Polk is
(14:11):
third round Jalen McMillan, I thinkso, I think so, but maybe
not. Yeah, other guys.I just want to mention Ronardo Green Florida
State. I think it would beeighty or ninety seven for him. Malachi
Corley certainly could be in the mix. Brendan Rice today, the Jonathan Books
of Brooks, Jalen Wright, thoseguys obviously, Max Melton out of Rutgers,
(14:35):
Makai Wingo Orodric Estime, your Boy, Javon Baker, Dominic Pooney,
Tannor Bordolini, Duayne Carter. Alot of these guys are around three guys,
of course, and then a couplemore. We haven't talked a lot
about kid Stover. I mentioned tightends plural. I do wonder, not
that I love it, but Ido wonder if they would be in on
him. It looks three maybe atpick ninety seven. And where does Jatavian
(14:58):
Sanders to going if he's available ateighty Jtavian Sanders is a much more,
much more appealing pick than at fortynine. Sure, and Brandon Coleman someone
I'd pay attention to. And thenI was thinking about it, if they
don't get a receiver, and let'ssay there's a run or maybe they just
have these guys graded a little different. And I do know that they were
at least open to Tank Dell lastyear. Are we sure they wouldn't be
(15:22):
in on Malik Washington at ninety seven? Like, are we sure? I
know he's small, but I justI want to mention that because there's just
a little interesting I think they wouldbe open to it. He's a tank
like Tank Delli talked about strong, small wide receivers. I think they would
absolutely be open to it. Okay, Okay, there we got. I
thought you're shooting it down. Iwas like, I just I and I
don't know, but I just thinkabout it. I'm like, man,
(15:45):
let's say they go with Chris Jenkins. Are they trade up for Johnny Newton?
And then they they come back andthey're looking there at ninety seven and
Washington's just sitting there and clearly atthe top of their board. We'll see.
I wonder how they feel about LukeMcCaffrey. I think he's more of
a Day three guy, but justanother name I'll mention it. Yeah,
again, I'm delving into day threea little bit from the consensus, but
(16:08):
I do think that this is whenit gets interesting because the grades are going
to be more sporadic. But yeah, Washington's, especially ninety seven. Ninety
seven is virtually Day three at thatpoint. The guys that look the most
interesting to me at wide receiver interms of projecting the Bengals fit with the
Bengals, like Jayalen McMillan. We'vetalked about Brendan Rice, We've talked about
(16:29):
Kean Coleman, We've talked about Thoseare all guys that fit a lot of
their profiles, a lot of thethings that they really like him wide receivers.
But the last note for me,James, and not talking about any
specific players here, is that I'mglad we're not talking about Man. I
hope offensive tackle X is available tothem so that they get somebody. It
feels a lot better to me forthem to have made that pick for all
(16:55):
the risk that we discussed with aMarius MEM's on the post round one episode,
the fact that I'm not going intothis second round thinking are they going
to pick Patrick Paul? Are theygoing to go pick I don't even know
reach a couple rounds for tackle here, because maybe the ones you want,
maybe Roger Rosengarten, kings Lesua Matella, and Blake Fisher are all picked.
(17:21):
I hope they all go. Yeah. So what you're rooting for is probably
offensive tackles to be picked and cornersto be picked, because the date that
the round two corners outside of McKinstryand Dejane, who I think are long
gone before forty nine. Once youget to the next tier of corners,
those are not guys I think theBengals are interested in, and they could
(17:41):
surprise us. We could be wrongthere. They could go outside of their
norm and pick a slower pick aslower running corner this year. But the
more those you see, the moreit pushes down some of the positions that
we think the Bengals are targeting inthis round, the defensive tackles, the
potential tight ends, wide receivers,et cetera. For sure, No I
and honestly, I I think youwant the Jatavian Sanders kid from Texas to
(18:06):
go if you could, you know, if you could just handpick you want
to go. You want some ofthese offensive tackles to go. You're right.
I do think kool Aid has asmall chance to make it. It's
not a big one. I thinkit's small. I don't think Cooper makes
it. I would be pretty stunnedif that happened. But by the way,
Cooper bebe by the way would behigh. I think on both of
(18:26):
our lists, as someone sneaky,if he falls there to forty nine,
would they go that route? Again? I don't. I don't think that's
necessarily their plan coming in, butit could happen, and we are going
to have you covered every step ofthe way. What do you got?
I don't know. If he's aidBraden Fisk's name, any I'd think great,
yeah, good, because he couldhe could very well. If he's
(18:47):
there at forty nine, they're like, hey, disruptor, you're a bagel?
And what if they not that?I think this is likely, and
then we're gonna we're gonna stop talkingbecause we're getting into some some pretty far
reaches. Here, But I wouldbiaber miss if I didn't mention Edrin Cooper,
who for some is the top linebackerin this draft. And if the
Bengals are sitting there saying, man, he's our best linebacker in this draft,
there's a gap between him and thenext guy. And it's pick forty
(19:11):
nine. We're not worried about thevalue here, it's the second round.
If they think he's awesome, I'mjust throwing out Edgern Cooper here just in
case. Wow, look at you. You trying to make me mad?
And with that, so see whyJames Yeah, yeah, No, I
get it, I do, Iget it. Troy Franklin's there, Jackson
(19:32):
Powers, Johnson's the kool aid.McKinstry's there, and they're like, yeah,
or Glen linebacker. That is notthe scenario where I think would like
a linebacker, to be fair. We'll be back after the completion of Day
two with reactions and we'll have someshorts perhaps for you after the round two
pick at least as well, withsome reactions shortly after the moment wherever you
