Speaker 1 (00:00):
KAY Cincinnati, an iHeartRadio station.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Guaranteed human. ESPN 1530. iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
20 after 3. This is ESPN 1530. Moe, thank you
so much for listening today. You see West Virginia on
Saturday at noon. The Mountaineers haven't won a game in
the Big 12. We talked about it before. Last across
the board in nearly every defensive statistic, the Bearcats are
coming off a bye. They don't have to travel across

(00:29):
the country. This is a golden opportunity for Scott Satterfield's team.
It kicks off at noon. TV coverage on TNT. TNT's
college football coverage is really, really good. J.B.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Long, the voice of the L.A.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Rams, calling the game on a Saturday for TNT alongside
Mike Golick Jr.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Kind enough to join us. It's awesome to have you, J.B.
How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Moe, it's good to reconnect with you. Thank you so
much for thinking of me and the invitation. I'm pumped
up to see the Bearcats. I haven't seen them yet
this year, but I had a great experience interacting with
them and the coaching staff last year when they were
really riding high. It seems like a critical juncture in
their season. In fact, I kind of think it's a
separation Saturday across the Big 12.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, it feels like it, and especially, you've looked ahead
to UC's schedule, and there's Texas Tech, and there's Utah,
there's Houston, there's BYU later down the road. It gets
really hard, and not to minimize what they have in
front of them on Saturday, but it feels like if
you don't get this one, especially coming off a loss
to Arizona, I think a lot of UC fans are

(01:31):
going to start thinking the worst.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I think it's the same in both directions. West Virginia,
as you said, yet to win a conference game. Their
defense really struggling. The scheme gauntlet has been incredible for them.
They've gone from Mestemaker in Oklahoma State to Iowa State
and all their formation shifts and personnel groupings to then
Noah Fafita in Arizona, a team that I know your

(01:53):
audience just saw in person. He's as good as they
get in college football. So I think they're looking at
Cincinnati saying it's got to be now, and I think
the Bearcats are similarly looking at West Virginia saying, hey,
if we want to be in the middle or upper
tier of the Big 12 this season, if we want
to accomplish some of our goals, I don't know if
this is a must win, but it feels like a
cannot lose for both teams.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, well put.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
When it comes to the Bearcats, what things are you
and Mike looking forward to talking about on Saturday?

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Well, as you know, Mike is offensive line through and through.
Died in the wool. We do an in the trenches segment.
And so I think we're kind of feeding the beast
a little bit in both directions because West Virginia's got
a great running game, as does Cincinnati. But I think
we're at the point of the year, and you tell
me if you disagree, where your strengths and your identity

(02:41):
have hopefully been established. especially going into a bye week
off a loss. You've probably seen some of the warts
and the scars and gone to work correcting those. And
this portion of the year in the schedule is, okay,
how many mistakes can we minimize and correct? And then
can we find the next evolution of our strengths? For Cincinnati,
that feels like pushing the ball downfield a little bit more.

(03:01):
Their running game has been established. They're capable. They use
that offensive line as a weapon as they should. French
hasn't turned it over yet. I'm not saying that would
be a good thing if he does this weekend, but
there is an element of, hey, let's take some more
chances downfield. Let's see if we can't stretch this thing vertically,
hit a few more explosives to unlock that next gear

(03:23):
of our offense. And I think West Virginia similarly feels
like Aside from the service academies, we're the best running
team in college football. We're going to force one-on-one chances
on the perimeter because opposing defenses have to commit to
our box to stop our tailbacks and our quarterback. We're
going to get those shot plays five, six times per game.
If we hit them, we win. If we can get

(03:45):
a takeaway, an extra possession, some three and outs, we win.
And so there's a lot of strength against perceived weakness
of this game. Who can exploit more of it probably
comes away victorious.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
You know, what you said about Cincinnati and getting the
ball downfield, it sounds like you've been eavesdropping on the
conversations I've had with my friends and with my colleague,
Tony Pike, because I've said often, like, I don't want
to see J.C.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
French throw a turnover.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
But if he did, at least I'd go, OK, maybe
he took a risk and maybe he realizes, like, all right,
the world's not going to end because you threw a pick.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Let's go and get him again.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Like there's I don't know if it's that they can't
challenge downfield, challenge teams downfield or that they won't.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
I just I want to see him try.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
You know, it's interesting. It's reminiscent of a conversation we
just had with Pete Thomas, who's been the quarterback coach
there for a while. He's got the co-OC promotion now.
And here are his words, which I think get to
the crux of the matter. He believes football at the
quarterback position, which he played, is played in the gray area.
Coach Satterfield does too. Getting French to live comfortably in

(04:48):
that gray area, not always being black and white. They
say he's super smart, but not a robot player. In
the second half of this season, can they get him
to play a bit more and worry less? That's like
a very intangible way to approach this game, but I
think there's probably a lot of truth there. I like
his deep ball. I like the plus element that he's

(05:10):
given them in the run game and not just in
the red zone on short field. I think he's been
more of a weapon with his feet than maybe they
were expecting in the transfer portal. So there's a lot
of good there, but JV Gibson can't be a non-factor
in the passing game, right? Can you get a little
bit more out of your tight ends? Can you really
capitalize on those opportunities against a secondary that's down at

(05:32):
least one starting corner has been vulnerable in the last
month since we've got to league play.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Give me a 30,000 foot view.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
You talked about this being separation Saturday in the big 12.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
And I would tend to agree.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
You know, I was interested in watching Arizona last week
because we just saw them in Tucson. They were playing
without their top three receivers last No problem, scored more
than 50 points. A lot of folks left Oklahoma State
for dead after they lost the opener. They might have
right now the best quarterback in college football. BYU has
a huge test this weekend. Give me some thoughts on
the Big 12 with where we stand right now.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
This is a little bit inside media, Mo, but I'll
go there with you and see if it makes sense.
I'm sure you're aware that there's only been one game
selected for next week in terms of TV network and
kickoff time. We're in what's called a six-day selection window.
What is it, Texas Tech coming to Cincinnati next week?
And still nobody knows when to start tailgating for that game.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Am I right on that? You are correct. Yes.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
I'm trying to plan my Saturday around. It's homecoming for
what it's worth.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
I know how aggravating that is, believe me. But there's
a reason behind it. It's because these TV networks are saying, well,
so much can change this weekend. Like, will the ranked
teams hold their water and make this picture clear? What
happens if Arizona State goes and upsets a Texas Tech
team that's shown some vulnerabilities? BYU beating or losing against

(07:00):
Notre Dame could be a tectonic shift for this league.
What if Colorado rises up and gets Utah and on
and on down the line? Oklahoma State, Houston, that's the
ranked matchup we have this week in the Big 12.
Of those two, which one is a contender? Which one
is a pretender? Once we start to get a few
more data points, not only can the schedule be set,

(07:22):
but I think we're going to see some tiers develop
within the Big 12 and get a closer look. look
at who really is on the short list of play
in arlington who is just playing for a winning season
and a bowl bid and which team has really kind
of fallen towards the basement.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Uh the always awesome jb long tnt saturday at noon
cincinnati at west virginia also the voice of the rams
by the way really quick because rams bangles was like
the popular pick here five years later super bowl part
two how do we feel about chances of that.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Happening I mean, I sure wanted those stars to align, right?

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Super Bowl back.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
It's so far. I know it didn't go your audience's way,
but I think we would both try to speak that
into existence, right? In the current state of affairs and
then take your chances within a three and a half
or four hour window. So, you know, let's keep hope
on the table. The Rams are so much better than 2-3.
They've played an unprecedented gauntlet to begin the year. Their
first four games were in four different time zones. One

(08:21):
was on the other side of the world. It's all excuse-making.
They can't get out of their own way. Their offense
has been great. Their defense has been top ten. Their
special teams have been 32 out of 32, and it
would be 33 if the league expanded. It's just been
that bad. This is a great coaching staff when it
comes to problem solving. I have all the faith in

(08:42):
the world in Sean McVay. I wish they were creating
fewer problems of their own doing. But nonetheless, I think
if they keep playing the way that they are, likewise
for the Bengals, the cream will rise to the top.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Well said. Travel safe to Morgantown. Thank you as always, JB.
Much appreciated.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Hey, it is really an honor and a privilege to
be on with you and to host your audience on
TNT Sports for the first time this weekend in 2026.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
You got it.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
JB.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Thanks so much. Take care.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
One of the absolute best there is JB long voice
of the Rams, but also a big 12 Saturday noon
Cincinnati at West Virginia. I, I can't emphasize this enough.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
They got to win this game.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
You know, they they're point and a half lines been
point and a half all week long point and a
half dogs on the road at West Virginia.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
There's not cross country travel.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
They haven't won a game in the big, I'm not
saying it's a pushover, I'm not even necessarily saying it's
a game that Cincinnati should win, but if the idea
was have the sort of record that you could look
at and go, okay, that is a successful season. I
don't know how that's achieved without winning on Saturday, quite frankly,
because as much as I would love to tell you, yeah,

(09:51):
they're going to be Texas Tech and Utah and Houston.
We all know the difficulty that those teams are going
to present. It's not to say that West Virginia doesn't.
present difficulties, but come on, they got to win this
game on Saturday. More on that with our guy Chad
Brendel coming up in 15 minutes. We'll do OSU and
IU with our buddy Dave Biddle coming up in the
five o'clock hour. Let's try to make some money this weekend.

(10:13):
Our guy Lee Sterling from Paramount Sports joins us next.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Cincinnati's ESPN 1530.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Traffic.
