Speaker 1 (00:31):
How are you celebrating? Thank you being on this show.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Mostly what I've been looking forward to is this. But
I'm gonna go out and have some dinner with family
tonight and then there might be a few Cincy lights
in my future.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Good man, all right, very good, Well have one for me.
You're gonna be busy this weekend. Let's start with the
basketball Bearcats in Ohio State tomorrow charity exhibition. What are
you looking forward to seeing from UC tomorrow night?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I think number one on the list is probably number
one on everyone's list. Right, is Gisel James ready for
the star turn? Like we saw what he did at
the end of last year, He's had an entire offseason
to continue his progress. He has been really really good
throughout the spring summer and since practice started a couple
(01:22):
of weeks ago. So you know, I'm not going to
be down on him if he doesn't have a big game,
but I think, you know, I'm excited to see, like,
is he ready to take that next step? And then
the obvious how do the new guys fit in? How
do they look Connor Hickman and Dylan Mitchell and Aaronton
Page and Tyler Betsy how do they fit in? What
(01:44):
do they look like right out of the shoot? And
so those are kind of the basic things. And you know,
obviously you want to see Dan play well. And you know,
I'm a big Seamos Bluecoasius guy excited to see what
he looks like without the getting hit by a car
early in the season. So you know, there's a list
(02:06):
of things, but really, man like, think about how excited
Let's say, in like eighteen minutes, Gisel James puts up
fifteen points and hits a couple threes, and you know,
has a breakaway dunk or something along those lines. Do
you see fans are gonna feel feel real good walking
out of that arena Sunday night, Saturday Friday night.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah, in games that count, that are competitive, how many
players will Wes Miller play.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Early or late? Because I mean early you know that
there's I think potentially like seven starter quality players on
this roster, and then you know Arrington Page is going
to back up as these bandago, where does CJ. Frederick
(02:57):
fit into this whole thing? I think you know, we've
talked about this a bunch of well, we did this
last year. You know, we did all year. Last year.
We dismissed John Newman, didn't we Yeah, completely dismissed John
Newman all the way to the start of the season,
and then it turned out he was one of, if
not the most important player. Like I'm not saying that's,
(03:17):
you know, going to be a carbon copy here, but
let's not forget there are not five better pure shooters
in college basketball than CJ. Frederick. If he's healthy, like,
he's going to have a role on this team, West
Miller's going to have to find him minutes. I mean,
I think it's going to start at nine or ten
at least, and then you know, you would think by
(03:39):
the time you get into February that that will have
trenmed itself down some. But I mean early in the season,
I expect most everybody to find minutes and to see
where they fit in this rotation.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
So I think that's what's interesting about this team is
let's assume they enjoy good health, right, and it's not
an attritional thing, and unfortunately they're not going to have
Tyler McKinley. What's interesting to me is, you know, you
get excited about a team that has, you know, ten
or eleven guys, and you'll hear it all the time.
In September and October point they're eleven deep and the
season will begin and coaches are trying to get everybody minutes,
(04:13):
and it's it's like watching hockey line changes, you know,
with with guys coming in and out. And then when
you get to conference play, when the games get really hard,
suddenly teams are playing seven or eight guys. And my
guess is we see something like that. What I'm really
interested in looking in watching unfold is how that evolves
from what they are. And you could say this about
(04:34):
a lot of teams what they are starting on the
fourth of November to even what they are. I think
their first conference game is New Year's Eve, even what
they are then, just in terms of how he uses personnel.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yeah, I was also gonna say, moh, the season gets
hard New Year's Eve, right, Kansas State Kansas Arizona Baylor, Like,
the season gets hard real fast, real quick when you
get into the Big Twelve play. But yeah, that is
gonna be an interesting part. And you know, I think
that's why it's great. You get you get this scrimmage
(05:07):
Friday night, and then next week. I'm not allowed to
talk about this mo it's super secret. Nobody's allowed to know.
But they also have a really good, super secret scrimmage
next week against a pit team that is, you know,
in a lot of people's top twenty five. So they're
definitely gonna get tested leading into the start of the season.
I think that's a good thing in helping kind of,
(05:31):
you know, determine what the roster is going to look
like and what the rotations are going to look like.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
This is an interesting football game. On Saturday, Arizona State
comes to town. They were picked to finish last in
the Big Twelve. They've lost once by eight to Texas Tech.
Obviously they're not going to have their starting quarterback. What
about the sun devil should concern me?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Well, the first thing, mo is, I'm from here on out.
I am taking the preseason Big twelve Football Poll and
firing it into the sun. It's the most meaningless thing
I've ever encountered in my twenty five years in sports.
My goodness. But look, if you haven't seen Cam Scattibo
(06:13):
play like he is a lot of fun to watch
as long as he's not playing your team. The dude
runs incredibly hard. He breaks tackles, He does not go
down easily at first contact. They have struggled offensively twice
this year, and in those games, Camp Scatabo was held
(06:33):
to under seventy yards. If Cincinnati can keep him in
check like they did RJ. Harvey against UCF last week,
this is a game they have a very good chance
to win. If he goes all TODs Brooks on him
and busts out for one hundred and seventy yards, It's
going to be difficult for Cincinnati to beat this team.
Their physical they play an aggressive brand of football. I
(06:58):
really really like Kenny Dillingham and what he's been able
to do there, and they're going to be a tough
out even without their starting quarterback. But if you can
limit Cam Scattigo, I think you can kind of box
in their offense. And you know, hopefully Brendan Sowersby finds
his rhythm early in this game, because we have seen it,
(07:22):
you know, through the first six games. When he is clicking,
he is such a fun quarterback to watch. You go
back to the the UCF game, Oh, middle of the
third quarter to middle of the fourth quarter, ten straight completions,
six of them for first downs. Like when when you
have a quarterback that can get on those type of runs,
you got a chance to win a lot of games.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Do they have a kicking problem?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
No, I don't think so. I mean, Nathan Hawks is
what eight of eleven, so the misses have been an opportune,
don't get me wrong, especially you know the Twigainst texasttack.
But you know he's brand new to this, like they
he was at Wittenberg, so it might take a little
(08:13):
bit of time. I think the main thing is that
I've seen so far. You got to get him lined
up in the middle of the field if at all possible.
He is much better from the middle of the field
than he has been from the hatches.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yeah, that's uh, that's a fair point. All right, we'll
see you tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Sounds good. How many pens are we is it? Do
you pin toss at a charity exhibition game? Hell?
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yeah, they're keeping score, right, Okay, yeah, yeah, they're keeping score. No,
it's the pens will be thrown. I mean, I hope
they're not, but they will be in the position to
be thrown, that is, if they're keeping score. I care
so absolutely for the listeners.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Mm hm, for the listeners that don't know. During the pandemic,
I got to sit in the Los box behind the
radio team, and my seat was directly behind Mo. And
one of the things that entertained me in those incredibly
strange games with no fans in the stands was watching
Mo toss his pen at every inopportune moment. And it
(09:23):
was I rather enjoyed it. It was it was a lot
of fun and kept me entertained. And now I don't
get to see it, so I have to live vicariously
through talking about it in these radio interviews.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Yeah, Dan and Terry love it. They they absolutely love
that dynamic that I bring to the table. All Right,
have a great birthday Man celebrate wisely.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Thanks Bro.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
All right, Mr Brendel Barhead, there you go, Bearhead journal
